- 0:55You're tuned to around the House, the nation's number one home improvement radio show and podcast with expert advice that's helped millions tackle everything from remodels to repairs.
- 1:06Hosts Eric G.
- 1:07And John Dudley have got you covered with the best advice and information about your home.
- 1:13Now let's get this hour started.
- 1:16Welcome to the around the House show, your trusted source for everything about your home.
- 1:21I'm Eric G.
- 1:21John Dudley.
- 1:22Good to see you, my friend.
- 1:24You too, brother.
- 1:25What's happening, man?
- 1:26We got a lot to talk about today and I want to talk about wildfire heat, smart home stuff.
- 1:32But I want to start out with something a couple little updates real quick before we dive into the show.
- 1:37And first off, my girlfriend Elisa, her kid just put an offer in on the house this week, which is going to be awesome.
- 1:44And I'm excited for them getting their first place a great brand new build starter home.
- 1:50But I don't think the builder is going to be happy because they asked me to do the inspection.
- 1:54So I got to jump on Amazon and order about six rolls of blue tape so we can go through and walk the house.
- 2:01What's, what's protocol at that point?
- 2:03They have to fix that stuff.
- 2:05The builder themselves, since they want the.
- 2:07Sale, they're going to fix it.
- 2:08I mean, it's the first sale right.
- 2:10Of the house.
- 2:11Yeah.
- 2:12So they're like, I mean, landscaping in the front.
- 2:15Yeah, yeah, landscaping was.
- 2:16Isn't in yet.
- 2:17So there's a lot of little things like that.
- 2:19But I mean, it's pretty much set up and staged on the inside.
- 2:21So there it's, the house is almost there.
- 2:23And if they get the offer and everything in they'll be that inspection process, which means I get to go over there and looking forward to it.
- 2:30I'm going to be bringing my, my tape measure, rolls of tape, my heat gun.
- 2:34I love having that temperature sensor, walking around, seeing where they miss the insulation and, and all that stuff.
- 2:40I was just gonna say get yourself a insulation depth finder.
- 2:45Oh, yeah.
- 2:45Well, I love going through with the, with the temp gun because I can go through and go missing in that corner.
- 2:51Missing in that corner.
- 2:53So it'll be a good one.
- 2:55You really do need some other hobbies, brother.
- 2:58Oh, no, this is, I'm looking.
- 2:59I haven't done this in a bit.
- 3:01So I am not a certified inspector, people.
- 3:03But for family, I will go out and give a great job and if you listen to last year when I had an inspector inspect my house for sale, it was comical on the things that they snagged.
- 3:15And like that foundation, you've got an active water leak.
- 3:19And the, the driest part of the year, no water leak there.
- 3:24And it was epoxy that was.
- 3:27That had repaired the foundation.
- 3:28He didn't bother to climb over underneath there and take a look.
- 3:31So it was funny.
- 3:32But I'm looking forward to that.
- 3:33Man, it's gonna be fun to get out the driving by.
- 3:36I drove by real quick beforehand just to eyeball it and I can already see there's going to be some issues.
- 3:42So it'll be kind of fun.
- 3:44We'll leave it for that.
- 3:45I might even film some of it.
- 3:46That could be kind of fun just to get my.
- 3:48To see what I'm finding afterwards.
- 3:50So it would be kind of a good one to show you.
- 3:52Hey, this is what happens.
- 3:53I wish I could have been in there a little earlier to see what it looked like before drywall.
- 3:57But we'll, we'll find some stuff in there, I'm sure.
- 4:00Yeah, yeah.
- 4:02It's good content though, because it keeps everybody aware.
- 4:04Right.
- 4:04Just because it's a new house doesn't mean it's a good house.
- 4:07I mean, man, there is an inspector.
- 4:10To provide that public service announcement.
- 4:14Like, hey, when you do check this out and make sure.
- 4:17Well, like you mentioned, that the AC unit's not 6 inches from the fence.
- 4:21Yeah.
- 4:22There's some stuff already just driving by.
- 4:24You can see that.
- 4:24You go, okay, this is gonna be an issue.
- 4:28And of course it's a, it's a.
- 4:30Here's the thing.
- 4:31New homes can make sense out there.
- 4:33It's in a cute little neighborhood.
- 4:36It's a great thing from that.
- 4:37It is one of the big top three national home builders, which to me with those construction projects, I've had problems with this builder down in Florida with a friend that at the time I was getting their house built
- 4:49down there and they built a huge smart home community that was solar powered, green, all this stuff home.
- 4:57Forgot to put it all underground.
- 4:59Yeah, they forgot to put it all underground.
- 5:01And since it was in Florida, they built it at a CMU concrete block.
- 5:06And the master bathroom had such a bow in that wall because I don't know if it was windy or what that the bow in the wall.
- 5:15They couldn't hang a flat mirror on the wall because the bow was too big.
- 5:21It would break the glass.
- 5:23Wow.
- 5:24So I'll be bringing my six foot level for sure.
- 5:27Yeah.
- 5:28Yeah, it's.
- 5:29Yeah, you know how it goes.
- 5:30Honestly.
- 5:31Well, we had that discussion episodes back about the difference between like I was, I'm a fan of the turn of the century homes with real dimensional lumber.
- 5:41And does the like engineering and architecture make sense?
- 5:46Not by today's standards at all.
- 5:48Is it standing a hundred years later?
- 5:51It sure is.
- 5:52Yep.
- 5:53Like so far, you know, something to be said for that versus the little stick frame track home, 80s homes.
- 5:5980S track homes.
- 6:00Right.
- 6:01With the LP sighting that was bowing.
- 6:03Out and every neighborhood's named Lake something, Lakeland Hills, Lakewood Shores, Lake View, like something terr already.
- 6:14Exactly.
- 6:15Well, man, I wanted to talk, I wanted to pivot here a little bit and talk here about wildfire, heat and smoke.
- 6:21I mean across the country.
- 6:24This is going to be probably one of if not the worst wildfire years in US recorded history here because we just have so many things going on across the country.
- 6:36I know, Johnny, you're down in Columbia and you probably don't catch that local news that we have up here, but we've already had 4 million plus acres burned in the US of land.
- 6:45And in Oregon where I'm at here, we've already had over a million acres.
- 6:49So that's about the size of Connecticut we're talking about.
- 6:54So it's.
- 6:55Luckily I get news briefs from you, so that helps.
- 6:58Yeah, and that's the thing, man.
- 7:00I mean it's bad out there.
- 7:01And so I wanted to talk a little bit about it because we've got so many things here.
- 7:06We've got dozens of fires, there's not enough people fighting them, there's not enough air support.
- 7:11And a couple years ago, man, I loved it because I was probably a little more than that.
- 7:15I think it's been out of service now for three or four, but a company had built a 747 tanker so they would land at the airport, they'd have fire trucks or pump trucks loaded up with tons of water
- 7:30and would take off and it could drop an Olympic sized swimming pool of water over a huge area.
- 7:36And unfortunately at the time the US government didn't give it a contract.
- 7:42And so they eventually parted the plane out and they had the whole system.
- 7:46It worked great, had no issues.
- 7:49But I tell you what, it would just dump tons and tons of water and it was sad.
- 7:54I don't understand what the politics were because clearly they were there.
- 7:58But I think we should have a dozen of those around the US and, and that's a big enough plane that if it's, if there's Fires in Spain or over in Europe.
- 8:07You could send it over there pretty easily.
- 8:09Honestly, it's super ridiculous that we still.
- 8:12It's the old man on the moon theory, if we actually did put one there.
- 8:16But who cares, right?
- 8:18Look at the stuff we do.
- 8:19Look what's happening with technology and everything else right now.
- 8:22And we can't figure out how to put out a fire.
- 8:25Like, guys, whether that's.
- 8:27Whether that's a 747 or B52 bomber or 12 up her state or what.
- 8:34You know what I mean?
- 8:34Like, totally.
- 8:36Yeah, it's a fire.
- 8:37Cut the 300 haircuts out on Capitol Hill and let's get serious about solving.
- 8:42I almost said a bad word.
- 8:43Things like that, like, yeah, it's just.
- 8:46It befuddles me consistently right at scale.
- 8:50I'm just like, what?
- 8:51Yeah, yeah.
- 8:52And then the problem is, is we haven't been managing the forest correctly here.
- 8:56What happens is, is when mother nature was purely involved and we stopped getting involved or didn't had gotten involved yet, we'd have these small fires that would go burn the underbrush and not take the trees out.
- 9:07And so that fuel didn't exist.
- 9:10Now that we're putting out, every tiny little fire that those fuels keep getting burnt up and burnt up and are built up, and then when they catch on fire, it takes the whole forest out, which usually never happened
- 9:21back in the days because there was a fire that cleaned it up every handful of years, and it never got that big.
- 9:27Now the underbrush is 12ft high, and it burned such a hot fire because we've kept the fire out of there.
- 9:36If you're going to keep the fire out, you got to manage this stuff.
- 9:38And there's no physical way to do that.
- 9:41Yeah.
- 9:42So it's got.
- 9:42We got to have a whole different forest service management to get through that.
- 9:47Now, Johnny, when we come back, you mentioned technology.
- 9:50I want to talk about some of the cool technology out there that has come out recently for helping defend your home, because I think that's so cool.
- 9:59And there's so many new products coming out that homeowners, at least if you.
- 10:03If you don't think they're taking care of it around you, at least you can defend your home.
- 10:07We'll talk about that just as soon is around the House returns.
- 10:10Don't change that dial.
- 10:11Before we head to the break, a quick word about the folks who make this show possible Every single week.
- 10:17Our sponsors are the reason around the House stays on the air and in your feed.
- 10:22So when you're planning your next project.
- 10:24I hope you'll give them a look and let them earn your business.
- 10:27Supporting them is what keeps this show coming to you and we don't take that for granted.
- 10:32Stick around.
- 10:33We've got more around the house coming up right after this.
- 11:55What's up?
- 11:56This is Sticks it in ya and.
- 11:57Satchel from Steel Panther and you are.
- 12:00Listening to around the house with Eric.
- 12:03G.
- 12:04Yeah, we love Eric G.
- 12:06And you should too.
- 12:091987.
- 12:12I never wanna leave.
- 12:14Welcome back to the around the House show.
- 12:15Hey, if you wanna find out more about us, head over to aroundthehouse online.com John we've been talking about Wildfire Prep and there is some really cool technology, man that's been coming out for people to put around their homes.
- 12:29Yeah, we have the capacity to solve so many problems and we still refuse to do the simplest things.
- 12:35So somebody's got to pay attention to it.
- 12:38One of the companies out there, Frontline Wildfire Defense.
- 12:42And where I think this stuff is important is if you install a system like that, your insurance company is going to be really, really happy with you.
- 12:50Which usually means if they're happy, you've got lower rates.
- 12:54So if you can put something up there that's going to reduce or eliminate the risk of a wildfire ticking your home out, it's really cool.
- 13:01One of the first ones I saw and I've seen these guys online, Frontline Wildfire Defense.
- 13:05So what these guys do is they basically do copper pipes on the roof with sprinklers.
- 13:10Yeah, it's what you see in commercial buildings on the inside.
- 13:13This is just moved to the outside and they won't Time magazine's best innovation for 2025.
- 13:22And so basically they just went through and built a smart home system that can actually defend itself with automated fire sprinklers and technology and will give you real time wildfire alerts and basically going, hey, we see the fire
- 13:39coming, it will measure those temperatures, watch what's going on.
- 13:43So they've got their second generation out and they have fire tracking software and turns on automatically fires within seven miles of your home and it's 100 times faster than traditional sensor based systems.
- 13:55Now I haven't tested any of these, John, but that sounds like a pretty good deal from what they're saying.
- 14:00Yeah, sounds pretty cool.
- 14:02The only thing I thought immediately when you said within seven miles there's a bunch of water going out for no good reason.
- 14:09Yeah, damn dude, that's a lot of water.
- 14:13I dial that back maybe and the cool thing Is though, is you have an app.
- 14:18So you can sit there and put the app on and then go, no.
- 14:21But the thing is, when you're talking about fires, it's those embers that are the number one threat.
- 14:26There's companies out there and there's new building code that's requiring these ember proof vent screens and stuff.
- 14:32Because that's usually what happens is you get those embers and they hit the soffit vents, you know, or underneath in the crawl space fence.
- 14:38And now you've got it hitting the sawdust from when they built the home in the crawl space or whatever.
- 14:44Or it's hitting the bark around the house and that landscaping stuff and it's catching on fire and you're going, but that's.
- 14:50They basically those wind driven embers, they cause up to 90% of structure loss during a wildfire.
- 14:56So it's not just the flames, it's just that ember stuff.
- 14:59And we saw that we need to do.
- 15:02We need an inexpensive solution that just encapsulates the entire house.
- 15:07Right.
- 15:08Like a Jetsons kind of thing.
- 15:09You just push a button in this big dome shield.
- 15:14Right.
- 15:14Foam dome just.
- 15:15Yeah.
- 15:16Basically covers it in suds like it's the airport when they do the planes and they, they hit that more like.
- 15:22The, the Kingdome or something.
- 15:24Oh yeah.
- 15:24The big concrete encasing that slides over the whole house.
- 15:28Or I don't know what, I don't know what material would be correct for that application, but something that just like locks you in your own private Idaho and protects you from.
- 15:39That would be awesome.
- 15:40That would be awesome.
- 15:41But I love, I love what, what Frontline is doing here.
- 15:44That's a good one.
- 15:46Now there's other ones out there and you're seeing different sprinkler systems.
- 15:50There's another company I've seen where you mount these.
- 15:53It's more portable.
- 15:54This is really a hard plumbed section where you got to put in copper, you know, copper pipes and stuff like that and all that, which isn't that big of deal.
- 16:04There's other ones though, where you can basically, if you've got a swimming pool, you can deploy this.
- 16:09Put the sprinklers on the corner of the property or whatever.
- 16:12The plan is that you give them is you give them a property map and they've got a pump and so basically it drops into your swimming pool and it will use your swimming pool water to cover the property
- 16:25with a ton of water.
- 16:26So you can sit there and let it go and it will, you can walk away.
- 16:31Don't have to worry about automation on this.
- 16:33It's real manual, but it does work.
- 16:35It will put all that water out there and reduce that risk.
- 16:39And I think that's kind of cool, too, for the people that are like, oh, man, I don't want to have to do this.
- 16:44Will my HOA allow it?
- 16:45Let's get down the list of stuff out there.
- 16:47But I think it's kind of smart.
- 16:50See, I love this stuff because I'm like, what if I'm just like, okay, what.
- 16:54What's the range of these sprinklers?
- 16:55How much output?
- 16:57And then I'm thinking, why wouldn't you just make like something with.
- 17:01I mean, obviously be definitely more expensive, but something with the pressure of a fire hose or at least a third of that.
- 17:10You know what I mean?
- 17:10Not just.
- 17:11That's what this one is.
- 17:12They've got them, and they got fire hose pressure.
- 17:14So it's dumping gallons of water a minute.
- 17:17Yeah.
- 17:17Yeah.
- 17:17All right.
- 17:18So that's pretty cool.
- 17:20My favorite, though.
- 17:22And.
- 17:22And again, this is new tech that's out there.
- 17:25And so again, I'm not vouching for these guys, but it looks really cool.
- 17:29And again, I haven't played with any of these, so there's no endorsement here, but sonic fire tech.
- 17:35This is cool.
- 17:37This is revolutionary acoustic fire suppression technology that deploys concealed ducting in your ceiling.
- 17:46And so this is using sound waves to blow the fire out.
- 17:52It disrupts the fire.
- 17:55What?
- 17:55I mean, yeah, you said acoustic, and I was like, whoa, now we're talking weapons.
- 18:01I mean, how to.
- 18:02How does that work?
- 18:04You can mount this inside and outside your house.
- 18:08So traditional fire suppression systems, that water inside can cause more damage than the fire itself when the sprinklers go off.
- 18:16This is that same kind of thing.
- 18:18So this does it without any water, any foam, any chemical discharge.
- 18:24You can use it outside as well.
- 18:28So it has autonomous early detection, so it identifies threats before flames spread.
- 18:33I saw a video where they lit a little kind of tiny barbecue outside underneath some plants, just like a little hibachi barbecue.
- 18:44And it read it in a second or two, Just a little tiny flame.
- 18:48And there's no collateral.
- 18:49Collateral damage on this.
- 18:51So it's no flooding, no nothing.
- 18:53And it is absolutely crazy.
- 18:56So it uses something you can't hear.
- 18:59Basically breaks down the combustion cycle.
- 19:04Almost like blowing out a candle does it?
- 19:06Looks like it blows out a candle.
- 19:08Wow.
- 19:09Totally frequency based, right?
- 19:10You hit the right frequency based, cuts that out.
- 19:13Wow, that's crazy.
- 19:15And I saw it, and it's.
- 19:17And it saves your windows.
- 19:19Yeah, yeah.
- 19:20Wow.
- 19:21And here's the part two that I thought was wild.
- 19:24Yeah.
- 19:25And it's sonictech.com.
- 19:27I think what's super cool about this is that they make them even like almost like a leaf blower where you can walk around and put the fire out for firefighters and stuff.
- 19:37Wow.
- 19:38Isn't that awesome?
- 19:39So now we're back to the 747 in my opinion.
- 19:42Right.
- 19:42Like, right.
- 19:43We could do that with sound.
- 19:44What the hell are we doing dumping gallons of water or fire retardant when they could just like send the bullhorn out and get it over with?
- 19:51Absolutely.
- 19:52There you go.
- 19:53Send rope 20 robots into the woods with frequency based acoustic stoppage.
- 19:58Like, and get it over with.
- 20:00Like, there you go.
- 20:01Why not?
- 20:02Right?
- 20:02All right, we'll talk about that.
- 20:03Let's talk a little bit more about that just as soon as around the House returns.
- 20:07If you want to find out more about us, head over to our beautiful website that Johnny built RoundtheHouse online dot com.
- 20:13We'll be right back.
- 20:14Don't change that dial.
- 20:15Before we head to the break, a quick word about the folks who make this show possible every single week.
- 20:21Our sponsors are the reason around the House stays on the air and in your feed.
- 20:26So when you're planning your next project, I hope you'll give them a look and let them earn your business.
- 20:31Supporting them is what keeps this show coming to you and we don't take that for granted.
- 20:36Stick around.
- 20:37We've got more around the House coming up right after this.
- 22:22Welcome back to the around the House show, your trusted source for everything about your home.
- 22:28Johnny and I have been sitting here talking about fire technology to help put out wildfires around your home and help defend your house a little bit.
- 22:35And we were just talking here about sonic fire tech and Johnny, you were just bringing up that.
- 22:42Could you imagine putting that on a 747 and flying over the woods or the.
- 22:48The wildfire and just putting it out?
- 22:51That's an interesting thought process.
- 22:54Why is it us thinking of that?
- 22:56You know what I mean?
- 22:57Yeah.
- 22:58Hello.
- 22:59Hello, State government.
- 23:00You paying attention that thought everything.
- 23:04I guarantee it's cheaper than the lives of firefighters.
- 23:07And all the water we're dumping and the chemicals you're putting everywhere with the fire retardants and.
- 23:15Yeah, I mean.
- 23:17Right.
- 23:17And if it saves the windows on your house, it's probably not going to kill all those animals either.
- 23:22Right.
- 23:23Well, think about this.
- 23:24Think about putting that on the.
- 23:25On the Boston Dynamic robot dogs and just sending a pack of under loose.
- 23:31Right, yeah, that's why.
- 23:32Yeah.
- 23:33I mean I was thinking of all the different Boston Dynamics demos they have, right.
- 23:37Everything from soldiers to whatever sandpaper.
- 23:43It's.
- 23:43I mean, I don't know, like I was telling you during the break, I just, I get so.
- 23:48I don't really get angry.
- 23:49I just befuddled by the fact that we have so much capacity to solve so many issues now and we just let the, the most costly, some of the most important things slide by.
- 24:03Nah, let's just worry about the crack on the sidewalk.
- 24:06Who cares if the roof caves in?
- 24:07What?
- 24:08Right.
- 24:09Yeah.
- 24:11You're missing the entire point.
- 24:12And you would think that the insurance companies that are losing billions of dollars would all get together and go, hey guys, it's cheaper us for us to fund this.
- 24:28Right?
- 24:28Seriously?
- 24:29Yeah, to turn around and go, hey, we're going to spend $300 million.
- 24:34We're gonna put a chip in 50, we'll call it a day.
- 24:37Exactly.
- 24:38You chip in and you send these things out there and you help the fire departments out there put these things around that are going after communities and stuff.
- 24:46Can you imagine if they just had big semi trailers that rolled up that were on quick response and the robots jumped out and went to firefighting?
- 24:56Seriously.
- 24:58And again, that would be community oriented.
- 25:01People working together for the good of people.
- 25:04And unfortunately, that's one thing I'm always ranting about because we just don't have enough of it.
- 25:11Yeah, yeah.
- 25:13I don't know.
- 25:13This is great stuff.
- 25:14Do my little part to make it a little bit better, but man, big stuff like that.
- 25:18Come on, guys.
- 25:19Somebody, somebody step up.
- 25:21Elon, somebody, you know, like.
- 25:23Yeah, anybody?
- 25:24Hello?
- 25:26Yeah, it would be so much better because the cool thing is there's just no environmental damage.
- 25:31That's one of the problems you see out there with, with what they've been doing in the forest in years past is they would put fire retardant in that water.
- 25:39So if they were putting it in the helicopters of the planes and of course, what's it got in it?
- 25:44It's got pfos and everything else in those fire retardant chemicals.
- 25:48So now we're, we're putting all that stuff in the forest.
- 25:51And of course that water runs downstream usually and ends up in somebody's drinking water supply.
- 25:57So.
- 25:57Well, this is the same water growing your food at some point, dummy.
- 26:00You know what I mean?
- 26:04Crap that we're dumping and yeah, no, just doesn't that kind of it.
- 26:09Right.
- 26:10It's.
- 26:11I mean when you say it out Loud.
- 26:12It sounds archaic at this point.
- 26:14We do what?
- 26:15We just put water on it.
- 26:16We have guys with shovels and rakes.
- 26:18Really?
- 26:18Yeah, yeah.
- 26:19Really?
- 26:20Yeah, yeah.
- 26:21Doesn't make sense.
- 26:22But we can make.
- 26:23Well, I won't get there.
- 26:25Well, Elon can make a.
- 26:27Elon can make a rocket come back and land on its own perch.
- 26:32But we can't figure out how to get that figured out.
- 26:34Right.
- 26:34But we can figure out how to have unmanned wars.
- 26:39Really?
- 26:39I mean, yeah.
- 26:41Enough.
- 26:42I mean, yeah.
- 26:43I mean even.
- 26:43Even.
- 26:44Yeah, even drones with, with, with the capacity to haul a.
- 26:49Haul a hose around would be a better move.
- 26:52Yeah, it's just what it is.
- 26:54Well, I wanted to talk to you today because there's so many people out there and it's going to be the east coast first.
- 27:00And if you're close to the fires here, which is a lot of our listening audience about keeping that smoke under control and kind of my first step.
- 27:09If you're in one of these wildfire smoke areas, there's a couple things I want you to do.
- 27:13One, keep your windows closed.
- 27:17Keep everything tightened up in the house as best you can.
- 27:20And the biggest mistake I see people do is they on run their clothes dryer during this point.
- 27:26This is the worst time to do it because you've got a clothes dryer that's pushing out a 150 CFM of air outside your house.
- 27:33Well, guess what?
- 27:34That's 150 CFM cubic feet per minute.
- 27:38So it's 150 basketballs of dirty smoky air you bring in when you turn that dryer on because it has to replace the stuff that's in the house.
- 27:47So kind of simple.
- 27:49You don't want to be using the fans unless you have to.
- 27:53Anything that's moving air out of the house, you're going to bring in outside air that normally would be fresh, but it's not.
- 28:00And that is one of the first things I think that's the biggest mistake is do the laundry when you're done or drip dry it or do something like that inside the house.
- 28:08Don't sit there and run the clothes dryer.
- 28:13It's bad.
- 28:14What about the blow dryer?
- 28:15We're good there.
- 28:16Oh yeah.
- 28:17Your hair can look amazing.
- 28:19There's no problem with that.
- 28:21Just checking.
- 28:21That's important.
- 28:22Oh yeah, it's important.
- 28:24Now the other thing too is, is make sure you always have an extra air filter sitting around.
- 28:28But this is where I actually change my H vac filter and my fan settings and go from either the recirculate or the automatic, I turn it to on because I want that filter to be always run in the
- 28:41air.
- 28:42Don't forget to turn it off.
- 28:44But set an alarm on your phone, a reminder alarm, in two days or whatever, when you think the smoke is going to be better, to turn that off because your power bill is going to go up.
- 28:53It's not great for energy consumption, but it's going to filter the air 24 7, which I think is pretty.
- 28:59Pretty smart to keep it as clean as you can.
- 29:04So, Johnny, I rolled our friend Caroline up the other day on Instagram.
- 29:09It was so funny.
- 29:11There is a company out there speaking about air quality.
- 29:14This was kind of fun.
- 29:15Little side note, here they are putting in this air, this injection of essential oils into your H vac system so your house can smell like a nice hotel room.
- 29:31So you drill a hole in your ductwork.
- 29:33This injects this oil smell, essential oil smell.
- 29:38And I'm like, holy smoke.
- 29:41Yeah, you're.
- 29:42You're.
- 29:42But here's the thing.
- 29:44Any of those things that are putting something off, you're still vaping.
- 29:49I mean, you're vaping whatever's in that because you're gonna breathe it.
- 29:52Yeah, And I set her off on a tangent on that one.
- 29:57She's like, are you kidding me?
- 29:59And I'm like, really?
- 30:00Yeah, she.
- 30:01I mean, she said that was just so unhealthy, Which I completely agree with, because that's why I senator.
- 30:06But anytime you're putting those oils out in your air, those end up in your lungs, and oil in your lungs is not a.
- 30:13An awesome place to be.
- 30:15You're not supposed to smoke oil.
- 30:17Who knew?
- 30:18Who knew?
- 30:19No, I thought.
- 30:20No, no, no.
- 30:21I went, really?
- 30:22Because I thought you were gonna say.
- 30:23She was like, oh, Eric, you're being paranoid or something.
- 30:26I thought she was gonna say it was fine.
- 30:28I was like, no.
- 30:29Yeah, that would have been crazy.
- 30:31Come on.
- 30:32Yeah, it's an Instagram ad that's going out now, and it's some injection.
- 30:37Then, of course, their model is.
- 30:39Is.
- 30:39We'll sell the unit, but you got to buy our oils, so just buy.
- 30:42Some incense, for God's sake.
- 30:44What's wrong with you people?
- 30:45Come on.
- 30:46Clean your house.
- 30:47Clean your house.
- 30:49Yeah.
- 30:49Done.
- 30:50Yeah, yeah.
- 30:51And quit living like you're 22.
- 30:53Maybe that'll help.
- 30:54There we go.
- 30:55There we go.
- 30:56But you know what I mean, that's just the nutty stuff that I see.
- 30:58And I go, are you kidding me?
- 30:59Really?
- 31:00So that is not gonna help you get better indoor air Quality.
- 31:04That's the worst part.
- 31:06So it was kind of funny.
- 31:09If you're vaping already, what's the difference?
- 31:10Go ahead, smoke the oil, kid.
- 31:12Ouch.
- 31:15Just get out the Marlboros at that point.
- 31:18Better for this plant at least.
- 31:20Yep.
- 31:21My gosh.
- 31:21I don't know about better for you, but it's not going to be worse.
- 31:24That's for danger.
- 31:24Nah, come on.
- 31:27I'm 40 years in, plus look at me, healthy as an ox.
- 31:31There we go.
- 31:32As you're coughing from the coffee.
- 31:35There we go.
- 31:36There we go.
- 31:37So when we come back here, Johnny, I want to talk a little bit.
- 31:40A couple things you can do here with the heat and the smoke that will help you keep your house clean and keep it so you can manage this.
- 31:46Especially for people like in our apartments, we don't have too many choices.
- 31:49That's the worst part for people living in apartments.
- 31:52Or, or you're in a rental and you're kind of stuck with what you've got.
- 31:55We've got some tips here for you as well.
- 31:57Around the house.
- 31:57We'll be right back after these important messages.
- 31:59Don't change that dial.
- 33:41Welcome back to the around the House Show.
- 33:44Johnny got me laughing right off the bat with the, with the bunny.
- 33:47I love it.
- 33:48Magic bunny.
- 33:49A magic bunny.
- 33:50Bunny.
- 33:51Heckle bunny is back in the house.
- 33:54That is awesome.
- 33:55So, man, one of the things that I see people fighting this year especially because all across the country electricity has gotten, geez, it seems 10x more expensive.
- 34:06What was a hundred dollar bill is at least a $400 bill for electricity.
- 34:11Yeah, it's gotten crazy.
- 34:13And why is that?
- 34:15What happened to Hoover Dam?
- 34:17Come on.
- 34:18You know what happened is our green push here got rid of all the cheap coal and natural gas fired power plants.
- 34:26And so they went across the country and said we're going to be greener.
- 34:29And they've been trying to shut those all down and now they're using solar, wind, that is.
- 34:36Which is so many more.
- 34:38Yeah, yeah, yeah.
- 34:40And a lot of them were doing.
- 34:42It on government subsidies 20 years ago and they're still trying to pull that off.
- 34:46Like, come on, guys.
- 34:47Oh, yeah, absolutely.
- 34:49So now our electricity bills are so much more expensive.
- 34:52And if you're an apartment or a house that doesn't have, I mean, I think it's 45% of the people like in my metro area here in Portland don't have ac.
- 35:02It just doesn't exist.
- 35:03It's kind of like when Seattle, we had that same thing up there.
- 35:10And I think it's yeah, we got a.
- 35:12Something's cut.
- 35:13There we go.
- 35:14We back.
- 35:16Yeah.
- 35:16Okay.
- 35:17It.
- 35:18I saw it, said it was reestablishing, so I'll jump back in.
- 35:22Johnny.
- 35:23In.
- 35:23In Seattle, Portland, everything else like that in the Pacific Northwest, a lot of people don't have AC.
- 35:28I think it's 45% in Portland don't have AC.
- 35:32And almost none of the apartments do out there as well.
- 35:35So when it gets to be 100, 105, or like it was a handful of years ago, 117 degrees, it's pretty brutal.
- 35:43And for many of these people, their only answer is window air conditioners.
- 35:47And man, those things are so inefficient and so expensive to run.
- 35:51That can add two or three hundred bucks on your apartment electricity bill for a month, which really hurts people.
- 35:58Yeah.
- 35:58But on that day, you really don't care.
- 36:01You're like, I don't care if it's a thousand dollars.
- 36:03I'm gonna die.
- 36:04I'm gonna die.
- 36:05Right?
- 36:06And some of the tricks that I do, and this is what you can do to really help.
- 36:11And I did this with my house before.
- 36:13I had the.
- 36:13I had window air conditioners in that thing and I had just the little portable ductless, the ducted ones that have the little round tube that goes out through the window.
- 36:21Because I couldn't put a window air conditioner in because I had these different type windows that I couldn't.
- 36:25More casement stuff.
- 36:26So I had to build something in for that.
- 36:28But long story short, what I like to do is in the morning when it's maybe in the 60s outside, AC's off, I open up all the windows, I turn around, turn on all the bath fans, the kitchen fan,
- 36:42anything that's ducting outside.
- 36:44And I try to bring in that cool air in so I can do that.
- 36:49Once I get the temperature down and kind of equalize the outside, I shut it up, I close all my blinds, I go into hermit mode and trying to keep it as cool as I can.
- 36:59And then I crank the AC on and try to pre cool it as much as I can.
- 37:04I don't care if at 10am I'm 62 degrees in the house.
- 37:07That usually means that, well, it'll be 74 at 6 o' clock in the evening.
- 37:12And that's kind of where I want it to be.
- 37:14And that will kind of help you get there as best you can, is pre cooling, plan ahead and then shut all those blinds.
- 37:21And the thicker of the blinds you got, the better because that will help insulate that.
- 37:26Because that's where all your heat gain and heat loss is, is through those windows.
- 37:30Living in Arizona for eight years, you learn that stuff pretty quick, right.
- 37:36It's brutal.
- 37:37You get up at 2 or 3, probably 3ish, and open everything and you better have it all shut by eight or you're in trouble.
- 37:49Absolutely.
- 37:50And.
- 37:50And these days you don't have to go in and add.
- 37:53Let's say there's so many houses out there that have baseboard heaters and Cadet electric heaters with the fan on them and that stuff in the wall for those situations.
- 38:03I would take a look.
- 38:04If you're going to be there for a while, maybe you don't want to put on a whole ducted system.
- 38:08But man, the mini split systems are getting cheaper and cheaper and cheaper.
- 38:12And that's kind of cool.
- 38:14The other day.
- 38:15Yeah.
- 38:15See you're.
- 38:16You're pricing them with instabit all the time now, right?
- 38:18Yep.
- 38:20And so super common.
- 38:21And it's saving a ton of money.
- 38:23And.
- 38:24And I know so many people.
- 38:26I've got a family member that has an AC unit that's sized incorrectly, but they still have three bedrooms upstairs with window air conditioners in them to supplement it to keep the bedrooms cool.
- 38:37And I'm like, man, seriously, you'll probably save enough electricity by replacing that and upgrading it.
- 38:44Then it's probably going to pay for itself in those summer months.
- 38:47Especially when you've got that.
- 38:48And he's got.
- 38:49Got oil heat as well.
- 38:51Which these days isn't amazing.
- 38:54Wow.
- 38:56So I would be trying to get out of that and get into a.
- 38:59A heat pump situation.
- 39:00Now one of the things, Johnny, I don't.
- 39:02You haven't seen this because you're down there, but they just changed as of January this year they changed the refrigerants again in our H Vac as well.
- 39:14Yeah.
- 39:15Which is expensive out there.
- 39:17Now here's the problem I have.
- 39:19If you look on the label of these, you'll see a flammable label on the side.
- 39:25Because I believe the refrigerant they're using is propane based.
- 39:30Okay.
- 39:31I don't want a leak in my indoor system.
- 39:34Yeah.
- 39:35And be filling my house up with propane.
- 39:37Yeah.
- 39:38Especially if you're a smoker.
- 39:40What's indoors or.
- 39:42Or that stuff's all regulated, Right.
- 39:46Oh, it is.
- 39:46Yeah.
- 39:46That's.
- 39:47Yeah, yeah.
- 39:48They were forced to do that by the U.S.
- 39:50government.
- 39:51They had to.
- 39:52Everybody had to change.
- 39:53They could not after January 1st build the old systems.
- 39:57And that's unfortunate.
- 39:58I know the government has pushed back a little bit that with some EPA regulations where they can still service the other ones.
- 40:05So they said you can't make the parts, can't make the Freon.
- 40:08And I believe the EPA is in the middle of changing that back right now so.
- 40:13To save people some money because I get that was probably bad for the environment.
- 40:18But if you've got to spend.
- 40:21If you're living paycheck to paycheck and you got to spend $10,000 to.
- 40:25To get in and retrofit to fix your AC system.
- 40:30Yeah.
- 40:31That becomes bad in the environment as well, because now your neighbor's robbing you.
- 40:35Right.
- 40:37Oh, it's insane.
- 40:39So I mean, the one thing I got to say with that is we got to put some common sense into H Vac systems out there and nowadays to be able to meet these energy efficiency standards.
- 40:50Now you've got a computer inside, you got a computer outside, you got all these electronics in hot exposed elements, and that's not the best place to put a whole cpu.
- 41:05Yeah, I won't rabbit hole.
- 41:08Okay, well, you said common sense and that just kind of negated anything that really ever happens.
- 41:15I.
- 41:15Common sense to H Vac and about everything else.
- 41:19Right.
- 41:20And it's like the old car parts theory, right.
- 41:24They make it last only this long because.
- 41:27Right.
- 41:27It's job security.
- 41:28At some point you're like, oh, I see where you're doing this and this you talk about common says, same things going on with permitting, same things going on with.
- 41:36What's the inspector going to pick on this week?
- 41:38It's just there's so much nonsense.
- 41:41Great example, man.
- 41:42Great example.
- 41:43So tired and I'm a little grumpy and I just have no tolerance for nonsense right now.
- 41:48I feel like my great grandma.
- 41:50Oh, yeah, I get that.
- 41:53I mean, great example.
- 41:55But one last thing too, brother.
- 41:56With people out there.
- 41:57Wildfire smoke.
- 41:58I've had to do this before.
- 41:59If make sure.
- 42:00Right now it's a great time to make sure that all the weather stripping around your doors, that entry door, the one going out to the garage, wherever else, are nicely sealed up.
- 42:09Make sure everything's adjusted, make sure it's looking good.
- 42:12And then of course, make sure all the caulking and stuff is good around the house, as well as clearing all that debris out there, making sure you got nothing flammable up against the house and making sure that things
- 42:22are looking good in case you do get a fire in your area that you're going to be ready for it when the time comes.
- 42:29Two things, qualifiers.
- 42:31One beach towels work as well if your weather stripping is not good.
- 42:37Little damn beach towel.
- 42:39As soon as you said, like, make sure nothing's up against the house.
- 42:42So we talked about this the other day.
- 42:44I the absolute visual popped in my head.
- 42:47Right.
- 42:47Of especially in the northwest of just the spider web infested like sheet of plywood and some firewood and spare tire and all.
- 42:58I gotta go clean that.
- 43:00The old wooden ladder that's leaning up against the house you've been meant to take to the dump for the last four trips that you didn't.
- 43:05Yeah.
- 43:06I guarantee there's 92 reasons why I'll do that tomorrow.
- 43:10Right?
- 43:10Yeah.
- 43:11So true.
- 43:12It's so true.
- 43:13Johnny, thanks for having just.
- 43:15I love chatting with you on the show like this, man.
- 43:18I always appreciate all your hard work on the show and it's always fun to have you on here, brother.
- 43:21I appreciate you.
