- 2:14get to this morning. Of course, we've got our good friend from the
- 2:16Canal Charleston Humane Association, Hannah Gardener standing Bible. Talk to her here in
- 2:21just a couple of moments. Jim Strawn as he is every Friday, Well,
- 2:23give us a little preview of Live on the Levy Fest of All kicks
- 2:27off in Charleston. And we've got to McKenzie Spencer making a brief run in
- 2:31to talk about that a little bit later on my guest co host this week.
- 2:35You got to talk to him a little bit last week. It's Evan
- 2:37Osbourne, the executive director of Capitol Market. Evan, good morning, How
- 2:40are you? Good morning, Sarah. I'm thrilled to be here. The
- 2:42Rocket, the Tyler Childer's hat today. I love it keeping at local,
- 2:46I love it. Man. I'm big Tyler Childers fan, and I real
- 2:49quickly I was wanna say my thanks to Dale Cooper for sending me sitting here
- 2:52for me the last couple of days. I'm back, should be around for
- 2:53a while. I had some business stuff I had to take too. Of
- 2:57course. The big story of the federal indictment of former President Donald Trump.
- 3:00He's doing court next Tuesday afternoon in Miami. Seven charges total. Hobby will
- 3:04cover the story into tail and talk line at ten o six, as well
- 3:07as, of course ABC News to aout today State Republican Party Governor Jim Justice,
- 3:12Attorney General and Goobertory candidate Patrick Morrissey, Congressman in US Senate Canada,
- 3:15Alex Moon, et cetera, et cetera, all out with statements condemning the
- 3:20indictment. I said it before, and I'll say this or we'll move on
- 3:22because I don't let's talk politics on Fridays. The indictment probably the best thing
- 3:25that could happen to the Trump campaign because it's just going to further energize the
- 3:30Trump base. Get ready for Trump twenty twenty four. That's it. He
- 3:35isn't in jail at that time. Hobby will have more at ten o six,
- 3:37and I'll have more, of course on it next week let's bring in
- 3:39Hannah Gardner from the Canals Truss Newman Association with this week's Adopt Me Please Speed
- 3:44of the Week. Hannah, good morning. How are you. I'm great?
- 3:46How are you? I am doing fine. We've got Evan Osborne here,
- 3:50the executive director of Capital Market. I don't know whether you two know
- 3:52each other, but you do now, Evan. Hannah Hannah, Evan.
- 3:54So we're fortunate enough this year to host Texas Entails. All that's right,
- 4:00that's right. You did probably a few weeks ago, and that was that
- 4:03was a party of me. It was a great event. I understand.
- 4:05Now. Uh, last week we had a little you know, there's nothing
- 4:09like live radio, Evan. And last week we had Hannah on with us
- 4:12and literally the McKenzie Spencer Festival is actually my guest co host. Last week,
- 4:15at about ten fifteen seconds into it, Hannah's dog got away and she
- 4:21had to run and chase her dog and we never heard from Hannah again.
- 4:25I did, and I appreciate it because she texts me and she said,
- 4:27Hey, the dog's okay. We just got to build a better fence,
- 4:30is that right, Hannah, taller fence for your dog? But but you
- 4:34did get the dog back, and everything's cool, right, Yes, I
- 4:38got two of my dogs, say, okay, yeah, two, okay,
- 4:41all right, all right, all right. So this week's to dot
- 4:43me please spet of the week. His name and I love this. His
- 4:46name is Bruce. Picture posted wv Metronews dot com. I'm sorry on Dave
- 4:50Allen rad I'm very tired. Picture posted on Dave Allen Radio on Facebook and
- 4:56uh and also at Dave A seventy on Twitter. Bruce is the dog's name,
- 5:00Hannah, And if you're thinking about adopting this dog and changing his name,
- 5:04you can't change his name. Why can't you change his name? Hannah
- 5:08tell us the story, Well, he had an owner, um and I
- 5:12do believe he was with that owner for ever since he was little, and
- 5:15he's always been Bruce. He comes to Bruce, he knows what Bruce says,
- 5:19and he listens well to Bruce. So Bruce is his name going forward.
- 5:24And I like the name. I said it on the show last week.
- 5:26I have a cat named Grady. I love giving human names to animals.
- 5:29So this dog's name is Bruce. Kay same, I have one named
- 5:34Tommy. Tommy, all right, give any pets Savan. Yes, we
- 5:39have several cats and a dog. You go is the dog is the pup.
- 5:43But my wife's favorite cat is George. George. See there you go,
- 5:46There you go all right again. The pictures posted on the Dave Anna
- 5:50radio and Facebook and at Dave a seventy on Twitter tell us the story of
- 5:54Bruce Hannah. Yes, so, as I said, Bruce was a surrender,
- 6:00Um, no fall of his own. He was just a surrender.
- 6:02And then he has shown to be really really kid friendly when kids have been
- 6:08around him and our presence. The surrender also did tell us that he was
- 6:14good with other dogs and kids and stuff as well, so that checks out.
- 6:17And then he also is a really really like social butterfly. He actually
- 6:23had an out on the leash the other day. And he's so sweet.
- 6:26He's loving, he gets kisses, he's very very sweet. Um. He's
- 6:30one year old. UM. He has microchips and vaccinated, and he is
- 6:33ready to play in a yard with lots of lots of areas for him to
- 6:41run because he does have a lot of energy and he does prefer playful dogs.
- 6:46He does want to play a lot, but he does like to sit
- 6:48around with you as well. Okay, So he would be a good a
- 6:51good family dog. I would believe, did the idea. What kind of
- 6:54dog he is? Um, probably like a gosh, I don't like a
- 7:00pity a carrier, a lab or something. He's a good mix. Yeah,
- 7:03yeah, he's a he's a good looking dog. And again you can
- 7:06go check out the picture. This would, as you said, Hannah,
- 7:10would make a great family dog because he likes the kids. Um, he's
- 7:14gonna get out and play with him. You can probably be able to take
- 7:15him to the park. You're gonna be able to turn him loose in the
- 7:17backyard and let him do his thing. M Yep, he is a really
- 7:21good dog. And he would be a really good one to travel around with
- 7:26you or take to the dog's card and stuff like that. Is he was
- 7:30a great boy. We'll get back to a Bruce and a couple of moments,
- 7:32a couple of things I want to cover with you, Hannah. I
- 7:33love the story on your folks on social media. Junior, a dog that
- 7:39was shot recently, not only has recovered but has now been adopted. Yes,
- 7:45Um, he actually got adopted yesterday and he was so happy. He
- 7:49was so excited and I even went up and seen him and he was really
- 7:54really sweet. He's just a very loving dog. So we're really glad and
- 7:57happy for him that he got home. Well, we're we love to hear
- 8:00stories like that. And also saw Hannah on your social media this week that
- 8:05you were at that time. I don't know what the status is now you
- 8:07can update us running very low on Purina dog chow. Yeah, we still
- 8:11are. We still um and that is not necessarily puppy chow because we do
- 8:16have a good bit of that. Um, it's literally just the adult dog
- 8:20chow, the perion of dog chow. We have ran really low on it.
- 8:24We were starctions then there for a second. But we have gotten some
- 8:28donations in. We would love to have more, so that would be amazing
- 8:31if anybody could donate that, um, we would love it, and some
- 8:35maybe even some wet canned food as well. All right, you're always taking
- 8:39donations, and I mean, you know you're you have certain things, you
- 8:41need more time, you know more than others. But you're never going to
- 8:45turn anything down up there. So we do appreciate everybody that donates. Five
- 8:48of the Live brought to you part by Valley Outdoors. Nobody with a bigger
- 8:52and better slice of guns of all kinds and Glen Yager and Valley Outdoors visit
- 8:54their shop Mount Verndon Road on Tad's Valley or in Tad's Valley or at Valley
- 8:58Outdoors wv dot Com. Hannah. One other thing, we talked a lot
- 9:03a lot about the stray animals in this segment, and I know that the
- 9:05Humane Association is constantly posting pictures of strays found on your Facebook page, but
- 9:11you had an interesting tidbit on your page this week. Most I don't know
- 9:16whether you knew this or not, Evan, but most lost dogs are found
- 9:20at least a mile within their home, within the within the home, so
- 9:24they don't generally go far. It's kind of surprising to me you had some
- 9:26tips posted, Hannah on your Facebook page as to what to do should you
- 9:31find a stray, you know, including asking round of course that's kind of
- 9:35obvious, but you know, going to the neighbors, but also to check
- 9:39for tags and to post on social media. A lot of good tips involved
- 9:43there on how to handle strays, and I know you handle a lot of
- 9:45that. Yes, Um, we do have strays come in all the time,
- 9:50and where we have been at max capacity, it's been a lot harder
- 9:52for us to take in strays. So we are very thankful for the people
- 9:56who do understand that, you know, we can only you only have so
- 10:00many animals and the shelter. But so, yeah, if you find a
- 10:05stray, we always try to like tell people maybe give it forty eight hours
- 10:09in your home because likely if they're at your house, they probably live somewhere
- 10:13around you or somewhere within a couple of miles of you. So if you
- 10:18just keep them with you, if you can, and post them on your
- 10:22Facebook, get a bunch of people to share it, make sure they have
- 10:24callers or tags, what information being known whenever you post it. Just for
- 10:30that way people can share it and maybe even a person knows whose dog it
- 10:33is. So it's really helpful if you keep them for just a while and
- 10:37don't bring them immediately up. So even if you do end up keeping a
- 10:43stray at your home for a day or two, do you still encourage people
- 10:46to call and just kind of let you all know that you do in case
- 10:50they do call. Is that something that we can do? Yeah? Right
- 10:54now, where we are so still pretty much at max capacity, We've been
- 10:58having to actually unfortunately put strays on a list to come in as as dogs
- 11:05go out. Um, so yeah, so call us when you find one.
- 11:09We can put you on the list unless we have room in that moment,
- 11:11and then we can tell you to just bring it up. But typically
- 11:15yes, we would just have you bring it on up. But right now,
- 11:18let's just call let us know if you find one, and then we
- 11:22will put you on the list and then it would be with him like a
- 11:24day or two anyways that you bring it up. So that would work out
- 11:26perfectly for you to give it time, post it and then there's also a
- 11:31place on our website that you can go to the resources section on our website,
- 11:35adopt Charleston dot com. And you can post strays on TechCo Love as
- 11:41well. And a lot of times you'll see that I've seen on your page
- 11:45and when there'll be somebody say these are some traser take it in and then
- 11:48somebody comments says, well, that's my dog or that's my cat and you
- 11:52saw last week cannuch. Sometimes things happen and they do get out, but
- 11:56we also want to remember the safety first. I mean, don't just you
- 11:58know, I want to up and grab every dog, every cat that I
- 12:01see, and and you gotta, you know, you know, respect boundaries
- 12:05with you know, tread lightly because some of these dogs or cats may not
- 12:09be friendly or they just may be a little bit scared and on defensive.
- 12:13I remember after Tuxa's and Tails this year at the market, having to exercise
- 12:18a degree of self restraint, and I'm not accustomed to because y'all had a
- 12:22great Dane puppy that just yes, they were cute, but yeah, it
- 12:28is. It is very good to be cautious of what you're doing whenever you
- 12:33do encounter a stray dog or cat or anything, just because you never know
- 12:37what their story is, you never know what their background is, and you
- 12:39never know how long they've been running on the street. Yeah, man,
- 12:43all right, Hannah, as always, I appreciate you. Let's get Bruce
- 12:46a home. I appreciate you. We'll talk to you next week. Thanks
- 12:48a lot, Thank you so much. Hand A Garden from Canal, Charleston,
- 12:52Maine association with this week's Adopt Me Please Pet of the Week. Bruce
- 12:56is his name. I always want to say it like I'm out of springsteing.
- 12:58Absolutely, That's what I've been was walking around the house this morning.
- 13:01Just remember as Stran's doing in the back. And remember they're not Remember they're
- 13:05not buoying, they're just chanting. Bruce. Keep that at my Bruce's lovely
- 13:09dog one year old, not fixed ship, but we'll be soon. Microchip
- 13:13vaccinated, social butterfly kid and dog friendly loves other playful dogs. Zero evans,
- 13:20zero red flags with this dog would make a wonderful family pet for somebody
- 13:24in the Handle. Was talking about taking This is kind of dog that you're
- 13:26gonna take to the beach, you're gonna take to the park, you're gonna
- 13:28take to the family reunion, gonna set on the on the porch with you.
- 13:33I mean, this would just be a great dog. How about how
- 13:35about this? How about I throw in if we get them adopted by let's
- 13:39say, what what's reasonable by five pm today? Okay, I'll throw in
- 13:43a fifty dollar market gift guard. All right, there you go. I'll
- 13:46tell you what. Since you just threw that out there, Ryan, we
- 13:50may want to try to get ahold of hand and tell her that. Can
- 13:52you can maybe text her or something and tell her that. So if we
- 13:56get Bruce adopted today, a fifty dollars Capital Market gift card. You got
- 14:01it, all right, So there you go, all right, there you
- 14:03go. Picture posted on the on my Facebook page Dave Allen Radio and also
- 14:09at Dave A seventy on Twitter dot Bruce Today and you can get a fifty
- 14:13dollars Capital Market gift card just for it. But you gotta do about five
- 14:16o'clock today or at least make arrangements because I because well they said the dog
- 14:20would be would be fixed. They usually take care of that, you know.
- 14:24So we just put a deposit. Now by showing some interest in Bruce
- 14:28Day, you'll pick up a fifty dollars Capital Market and gift card as well.

- 20:27a great cause, and we helped those charities, those inner city charities that
- 20:32help people with who might be a little bit down on their lucks, need
- 20:33to bite, to eat, in a place to stay. I said,
- 20:36well, the records twenty seven hundred dollars. Manamel did it four years ago,
- 20:40led by Tara. He said, I want three thousand. Don't want
- 20:42to break the record. I said, good, go for it. He's
- 20:45even trying to find volunteers, and I think he has. But to sweeten
- 20:48the pot. Jeff Pearson, Jeff Peerson. You know that name, don't
- 20:52Jim Mackenzie, Jeff Pearson, We all know that name. Is a pretty
- 20:55brilliant artist himself. He sketched and he drew four members of the and part
- 21:00of the fifty fifty drawing tonight is going to be we're gonna draw for the
- 21:04money, and then we're gonna do a second drawing and someone's gonna win these.
- 21:07I'm this is radio, I understand, but I'm sure never been on
- 21:11the radio. I'm not sure that I'm showing the people in the studio how
- 21:17cool these are. People trust people, they're cool. They tell the people
- 21:19they're cool. They're very cool. This is I'm not I'm not hoppy,
- 21:23and this is not Morgantown. We don't have cameras in here. I'm sorry.
- 21:27I just wanted to recognize how hard John ingramore to put these together and
- 21:33we you know, wanted to highlight. For me every year with the Live
- 21:37on the Levy announcement is finding out what tribute McKinsey got to make that announcement
- 21:44this year, she got to announce at the press conference. I mean,
- 21:48it's gonna be announce daying to night. So if I didn't get it in
- 21:49there, seven forty five, John and his friends will take center stage.
- 21:52They'll do two forty five minutes sets that will take us until about nine thirty
- 21:57Live and Levy. Great fun for that, great cause we've had two weeks.
- 22:02This was week number three, season nineteen, the twentieth anniversary, and
- 22:06it's been off the chain thus far this year. Great great, great food
- 22:11vendors, great beverage vendors, great atmosphere that the river has been outstanding,
- 22:15the boating communities been coming out. I'm I'm high on twenty twenty three thus
- 22:22far. I know it's earlier, but this is starting to shape up as
- 22:25a used I don't use the word epic very lose, but it could be
- 22:30an epic year. I mean right, and I think an epic night is
- 22:33coming tonight, and that's going to be three really great nights of live and
- 22:36Levy in a row, and they're just getting better each and every Friday.
- 22:38So folks, if you haven't had a chance, come on down, free
- 22:41to come in, bring a few dollars and get your bite, eat and
- 22:45a drink and just enjoy your neighbors and enjoy this outstanding music and the outstanding
- 22:51weather and just everything about it. Dave, I mean, you know it's
- 22:53it's awesome. It is. I mean, you've had a heck of a
- 22:56heck of a week and maybe you can culminate it tonight. You've had a
- 23:00wee week. It's been a week and after I leave, you're going to
- 23:03talk about a week coming up to see even better than the weeks we've had.
- 23:06In the press. So McKenzie and festival is here, and this is
- 23:08part of festival right tonight. Yeah. See, I'm just not that just
- 23:11dawned on me. Yeah, okay, okay, the wonder you're here?
- 23:15All right, jim I know you gotta go, so I want to transition
- 23:19over here. You go, Ensey Spencer. McKenzie, I'll see you shortly
- 23:23slurping all over my microphone there, Good morning, all right, m yeah,
- 23:30yeah, well we have to get him now, Yeah, I do.
- 23:36I love you, Jimbo, you know, yes, all right,
- 23:38all right, McKenzie. Spencer, our host on the show last week,
- 23:42is here. Now let's talk about test Ball, which starts funny. We
- 23:45all kind of switched places. We're still in the studio together. We just
- 23:48all switched chairs. And I'm glad you said that. And I know you
- 23:52were on limited time too, but I want to say this. I had
- 23:55originally scheduled a very good friend of all of ours, Morgan Robinson. Yeah,
- 23:59on the show. Morgan's deal with some family issues right now, and
- 24:00am I going to go into all that. If you follow on Facebook,
- 24:03you know she's get some family things going on. And so I had to
- 24:07tell I reached out to Morgan. I said, hey, it's probably not
- 24:10the best time for you because she's gets some family. She's with her mom
- 24:11going on right now, and thoughts and prayers to yeah, we all love
- 24:15Morgan, to Morgan and Tracy and everybody. So, Evan, what I
- 24:18just said is you weren't the first choice. That's what I said, story
- 24:22of my life. But I appreciate you. You step it up because well,
- 24:26and I'm here to basically, I mean like, yes, talk about
- 24:27Fest of All, but basically to scare Evan to death about these ten questions.
- 24:32He didn't listen to mine last week. Uh So when he called me
- 24:34and said, I'm going to be doing what you did last week, I
- 24:37was like, listen, you should be terrified. Obviously Dave's gonna take it
- 24:41really hard on you, and it's going to be you know, he's Dot
- 24:45of All, come to co host, stay for the abuse. Yes,
- 24:48yeah, Evan's U face is getting redder by the second as we do this.
- 24:52By the way, which is all right, He's all good, All
- 24:53right, Fest of All, Fest of All starts today. Um yeah,
- 24:56we are day one right now. So U Jem was just saying, you
- 25:00know, obviously live in the Levey tonight is going to be huge, but
- 25:03we have some other activities going on. Tonight too, you can walk straight
- 25:07down to Vino's right down the boulevard. We're gonna be having some Argentine tango
- 25:11classes and lessons that that are tonight too. It's the start of the Charleston
- 25:15lad Opperguilds run of Little Shop of Horrors that is this weekend in next weekend,
- 25:21and we've got a full kind of ten days leading up with every kind
- 25:26of art, music, theater, dance, family friendly activity you could think
- 25:30of. I mean, and it's amazing. And again before we let you
- 25:33go, because I know you're on a limited time schedule. Here where can
- 25:36people learn more? Yeah, Festival Charleston dot com. We're gonna be out
- 25:40and about again. We'll be at Live and the Levey tonight too. Every
- 25:42event we'll have some schedules, some printed schedules as well that you can pick
- 25:47up and kind of plan out your your festival adventure. We kind of try
- 25:51to say that it's almost like a Choose your own Adventure book because you kind
- 25:53of pick and choose what you do, and no two festival experiences are the
- 25:57same anything. For I mean, we're fortunate enough to partner with Fest of
- 26:02All on a number of events throughout the market and just actually we have won
- 26:07the Saturday Yes, we haven't done before. We're very excited. Yeah,
- 26:10it's a new new one for us. We are having the art parade on
- 26:12Saturday morning and then leading straight into the Capital Market after party, which is
- 26:18going to kind of have We're gonna have to make and take crafts for the
- 26:21kids. We're going to have character meet and greets. But the one that
- 26:22I'm really excited about, and if you pick up Bruce, Bruce the Dog.
- 26:27Yes, did you hear this announcement? You know we had Bruce the
- 26:30Dog on that We were talking pictures to Bruce the Dog. Beautiful kid.
- 26:33Evan just stepped up to the plate there and said, if somebody adopts Bruce
- 26:37today between now five o'clock, the folks of Capital Market, we're going to
- 26:41throw in a fifty dollars gift card. All love that and they can be
- 26:44in the Dog Fashion Show this weekend and Bruce can be in the Dog Fashion
- 26:47Show, can be our special guest. Could be Bruce's best day ever,
- 26:49the best couple of days. Brus is going to get a big day out,
- 26:52big first day out, all right, McKenzie, Before we let you
- 26:56go for those, and you've been on the show several matter of fact,
- 26:59you may hold the record for that. Dona want to not talking about mayors,
- 27:03but I mean I'm talking about the other people I have on You're you're
- 27:07right up there with with the with the with the most appearances on the show,
- 27:10especially talking about community events. Yeah, give us the rundown of what
- 27:14what exactly festival is. I know you've done it before, but do it.
- 27:15Yeah, sure, so Fest of All is ten days of music,
- 27:19theater, art, dance, family fun events, things that you can take
- 27:22the whole family too, that really focus on our local community, that really
- 27:27focus on our region, but also brings in national and international talent that you
- 27:32may not be able to see other places. And so we're really fortunate to
- 27:36be able to bring ten days in the summer, ten days in fall,
- 27:38and then other events throughout the year. But we're kicking off again day one
- 27:44today, so come out between now and next Sunday and you'll definitely be able
- 27:48to see a lot of great events and most are free and just open to
- 27:51the public. All right, good stuff. Website again, Facebook, social
- 27:53media, So Festival Charuston dot com is the website you can get the full
- 27:56schedule there and then we're on Facebook, Twitter, Instagram under festival all the
- 28:03good stuff. Yeah all right, McKenzie. I know it's gonna be a
- 28:04tiring ten days for you, right, I mean, I might be a
- 28:07little hiered by the end of it, but it'll all be worth it,
- 28:11alright, all right, get out there. We'll talk to you soon.

- 31:22Seven Osborne is here as my co host, A La, the executive director
- 31:26of Capital Market doing doing good so far man, that's me. Well you
- 31:29survived the hurricane owners Jim Strawn so you survived that. And McKenzie and and
- 31:33remember our adopt me police pet of the Week from the Canal Charleston Jumine Association.
- 31:38Bruce is the dog's name. Bruce's picture posted on Dave Island Radio and
- 31:41Facebook and at Dave A seventy on Twitter. You also, I think,
- 31:45shared the picture last night. I did. Yes, I got really excited.
- 31:48I sent you the picture last night. Man, you had it up
- 31:49there like you know, just like that. If you adopt Bruce between now
- 31:53and five o'clock or at least getting hold of Hannah and the folks at the
- 31:57shelter and make arrangements to adopt Bruce. Evan and the folks at Capital Market
- 32:01are going to throw in a fifty dollars gift card. So that is cool
- 32:05stuff, man, That's that's good stuff. I appreciate that, which a
- 32:07lot of people don't know. Over at West Virginia Marketplace, we have West
- 32:10Virginia produced dog treets, West Virginia produced dog treats. Well, I did
- 32:15not know that it. I mean, I've been there many times. I
- 32:15just now I don't have a dog, so I guess I've never had a
- 32:17reason to look at him. Evan. Before we get into our discussion,
- 32:22I want to ask this and we get to know you a little bit.
- 32:23We'll do two in questions as well, but I want to get to I
- 32:25want to ask you this question. This past Monday night, we had the
- 32:29watch party over there for Chef Paul Smith in his attempt at winning the James
- 32:32Beard Award the ceremony in Chicago. Unfortunately he didn't win, and we'll talk
- 32:38about that in just a bit, but talk about the event that you hosted
- 32:40there. How many people showed up and there was a charitable element to that
- 32:45talk about that. So Monday evening was the finals for the twenty twenty three
- 32:52James Beard Awards, and the awards ceremony itself actually took place in the Lyric
- 32:55Opera House in Chicago, very much like I think Oscars black tie red carpet,
- 33:01you know, sort of a gala type affair. We thought, as
- 33:07a community, and working with the owners at ten ten and Ellen's ice Cream,
- 33:10that it was that in the pitch and just really everyone that loves Chef
- 33:16Paul, we thought it was important that we honor this momentus occasion. And
- 33:22what became a parent pretty quickly was enough people love and admire Paul and want
- 33:27to support him that none of their restaurants were going to be big enough to
- 33:31accommodate. And so pretty quickly we came up with the concept to stream the
- 33:37awards ceremony live at the market. And you know, it was important for
- 33:43all of Chef Paul's owners and partners to close all of their respective establishments and
- 33:52invite all of the employees down. So Monday night we hosted between selling tickets
- 33:58to the public and all of their employees, we had about four hundred and
- 34:00fifty people come and celebrate the awards. You mentioned that he came up short,
- 34:06didn't didn't quite win. However, I don't really view it that way.
- 34:09We all as a community Appalachian you know, food, the food scene
- 34:15in our region instantly won, you know, the minute he became a finalist,
- 34:20because he's helped put us on the map. And this guy does so
- 34:22much for so many people in so many organizations, that this was the least
- 34:25we could do well. And I was, and I don't when we had
- 34:29him on the show. You brought him in here last Friday, and I
- 34:31was prior to the event, and I don't remember now whether he actually said
- 34:35this on there or off here. Sometimes they blur Evan, you know what's
- 34:37actually said on there, what's off here? But he actually said last Friday,
- 34:40he said, I'm just so happy for the kids. And what he
- 34:43meant by the kids was is the younger people that he is mentoring in his
- 34:46restaurants. So he does a lot of work with chef mandygam Over at Carver
- 34:52Culinary Academy. He hires those kids, you know, he gets them their
- 34:58first experience of what it's like work in a high level kitchen and he is
- 35:04always on the GOP, always that guy. He's the first one in,
- 35:07last one out of anything he does. And it's inspiring like that, that
- 35:12type of work ethic, seeing people that work. We see a lot with
- 35:15our farmers. I mean, nobody works harder and that's where a lot of
- 35:20the work that we do at the market we try to draw inspiration from that.
- 35:22He is teaching a monthly cooking series that we do with AARP, Let's
- 35:29Get Cooking. He donates his time to that. It is a huge time
- 35:32commitment to put on a once a month cooking class for an hour and a
- 35:37half. But he's there first thing in the morning, shopping the market,
- 35:39looking for local ingredients and then taking a class of a hundred people and answering,
- 35:45staying to answer every single question that they may have, from what kind
- 35:49of knife should I use? To what's the proper way to peel a tomato?
- 35:52It's it's really really inspirational to see how giving in generously is this time.
- 36:00One of the things that I mentioned on the show last week, and
- 36:01we'll move on Evan, that I really like about listening to Uh to uh
- 36:06Chef. You know he's on the show with with Coop in the afternoons with
- 36:08Cooper Dave weekly on the Hotline a lot. And he's not a culinary snob
- 36:14and what I and that's what I really and I when I watch a lot
- 36:16of the shows, like you know of diner drivings and dives, and I
- 36:20watched a lot of that. My wife and I are both of foodies and
- 36:23UH and and we watch a lot of that stuff. I like people that
- 36:25say it's okay to order a cheeseburger, you know that, then they're actually
- 36:30eating things that I can understand. And when he's on the show, he's
- 36:32making great food at these restaurants, but he's also not above doing pepperoni rolls,
- 36:38you know, absolutely, and I love that and he parts that to
- 36:42his students as well, the people who's mentoring I should say, it's like,
- 36:45how can I take the pepperoni role and elevate it slightly above what it
- 36:49is that you know, yeah it to be. And I think one of
- 36:52the great things about UH, particularly dining at ten ten upon Bridge Road,
- 36:58is that there is an entry point for any sort of palette there. You
- 37:01know, if you don't consider yourself somebody that really has an affinity for fine
- 37:06dining still check it out, because I mean, I can tell you just
- 37:08something as simple as guacamole, You're gonna go there and you're gonna have the
- 37:12best guacamole, the best version of it. You've every good stuff. Sixteen

- 37:27have Evan Osborne here is the executive director of the Capital Markets of my co
- 37:30hosts this week. Talk about your background, Evan. Who is Evan Osbourne?
- 37:34So? I was born in Charleston, left, spent most of my
- 37:38quote unquote formative years in Welmington, North Carolina, and then came back.
- 37:44How long have you been back? Gosh, now twenty years? Okay?
- 37:47Well, how long have you been executive director of Capital Market A couple of
- 37:51years now, okay. I My wife jokes that my version of a midlife
- 37:55crisis was going in running the outdoor market at the Farmer's Market. There's some
- 38:01truth to that. I have been. I started my relationship with Capital Market
- 38:08actually as a board member. I was a development director for the Ronald McDonald
- 38:13House here in Charleston. We helped build the new house for that fantastic organization
- 38:16over on Pennsylvania Avenue, and so at that time I was a board member.
- 38:21I got to learn quite a bit about how the market functions. And
- 38:23I've always been considered myself somebody that has an affinity for food and local producers.
- 38:30You know, my grandparents lived on a farm when I was little.
- 38:34I have an appreciation for what it is that our farmers and producers and small
- 38:37business owners do at the market day in and day out. Folks always have
- 38:43something new and exciting going on over a capital market. I was telling you
- 38:45this story to do to break. You know, a lot of times when
- 38:47people come to Charleston and my wife deals with us in her career, and
- 38:51I have dealt with the two people say, well, I'm in Charleston for
- 38:53a conference, for some kind of meetings or whatever. What is there to
- 38:57do in the evening, And invariably one of the first things people say is
- 39:00you gotta go check out capital market because this is something that we have in
- 39:02Charleston that other bigger cities Columbus, Pittsburgh, Charlotte. They have these type
- 39:08cities and they don't always expect to find that. In Charleston, West Virginia,
- 39:12we have something for everyone under the inside the indoor or outdoor market where
- 39:17it's a great time for the market. Right now, we're in that transition
- 39:21from our spring flower season to summer produced season. So you got the best
- 39:24of best worlds. You still have some great flowers and ferns and things like
- 39:29that available, but also the first like we got our first fuel grow tomato
- 39:32in a couple of weeks ago or last week rather, and we're starting to
- 39:37see the squash and the zucchini and the onions and one of my favorite times
- 39:40a year. I love it. I love it, And I just wanted
- 39:44to give a shout out really to all of the hard working men and women
- 39:49that helped make that possible at the market. You know, their day doesn't
- 39:53end when the market closes. They're going back, they're picking tomatoes, they're
- 39:58watering flowers, work in the greenhouses. It's tireless, thankless work. And
- 40:04uh, you know this time of year, those are twenty twenty two hour
- 40:07days sometimes. What are the concepts from all the different promotions come from?
- 40:10Because I know you guys are always doing something over there, and it's a
- 40:14huge facility, so you know, Um, but where do you is that?
- 40:17You? The board combination customers, I mean, where where do they
- 40:22come from? Sometimes people are surprised to learn that Capital Market itself is a
- 40:24five of one C three. So we are technically a nonprofit governed by volunteer
- 40:29board of directors. Actually, our our current board president is none other than
- 40:34Stephen Keith, the food guy. Well, we could could ask for a
- 40:36better one. Nope, Nope, it's right in his wheelhouse. It works
- 40:38out well. We complement each other very nicely. But um, all of
- 40:45the events and the promotions that we do are driven through through volunteers and we
- 40:51meet monthly sometimes more often to to come up with the ideas and promotions that
- 40:58that helps sustain the market. Our rental income really only covers about half of
- 41:01our operating costs, so it's through the special events and the promotions that we
- 41:06do throughout the year, things like mister Smiths goes to Chicago or the market
- 41:10Mixer in the fall. That's how we support our operations. So we're not
- 41:15just basically a landlord. We're also running food access programs for seniors and kids.
- 41:21We operate the Snap Stretch program to help triple the amount of money that
- 41:24families have available to spend on their EBT cards. Where next Tuesday and Wednesday
- 41:30we're going to run the Senior Farmers Nutrition Program in which seniors that have qualifying
- 41:36income levels can come pick up vegetable vouchers at the market and literally they can
- 41:40take they can grab their voucher. It's one stop shopping. They can meet
- 41:43with Canall Valley Senior Services, pick up their voucher, turned around and go
- 41:45spend it on West Virginia Fruits and Vega. And those are very popular because
- 41:49I know that sort of a program is done in other areas as well.
- 41:52And I know when I was doing radio on Southern West Virginia in Logan that
- 41:55they had they did to similar things down there. It was very very popular.
- 42:00What are some of the more I mean, I know it's it's like
- 42:01choosing your favorite child, but I mean or in your cage favorite cat um?
- 42:06What are some of the more popular or um were the ones that people
- 42:10really really come back time and time again for at the Capital Mark as far
- 42:14as the promotions go, or even the shops I mean, I'm a big
- 42:17fan of the best fish chandwich on their head, my entire life. It's
- 42:20found a capital market for that matter. And I love soho, I love
- 42:22I love everything there, But well, what are some of the more popular
- 42:25ones that people seem to enjoy? Again, that is very much like choosing
- 42:30um and and I love and appreciate all of them. Um there. That's
- 42:35the thing, is no two businesses with the market or are duplicating what the
- 42:38other ones that are doing. So if like last night on my way home,
- 42:43I picked up a ribby from Johnny's and then I went and grabbed some
- 42:46of my produce from outside, and it was a perfect summer mutal, you
- 42:51know, I can I can get it all right there with a sprinkle a
- 42:54little JQ. Dickinson salt. I mean, yeah, just go get a
- 42:57bottle of wine or craft beer or something there. I mean, every time
- 43:00I'm there, it's always amazing. And that's that's the really exciting thing about
- 43:05how um I've learned to shop the market is don't My favorite thing to really
- 43:10do is not is to go in every day and not know what I want
- 43:15to do, and let me take a look and see what's news, see
- 43:17what looks good U and then sort of draw inspiration from that. All right,
- 43:22great to do ten questions? Sure are. We're gonna take a break.
- 43:23When we come back, we'll do ten questions, the most popular segment
- 43:27we do on Friday Funehouses. To put somebody on the spot. We asked
- 43:29the ten totally random questions. Yeah. I try. Sometimes they repeat,

- 50:21All right, so we're in the summer months, summer. I mean,
- 50:23I'm gonna be kind of touching us a little bit, but the summer is
- 50:25really the exciting I guess, Nick well, summer in Christmas, I guess
- 50:29would be the exciting times at Capital Market. So we mentioned a couple of
- 50:31things. With some more things we get going on June twenty fourth, we're
- 50:36here. We have a brand new event. Again. I think we established
- 50:38that I like beer, but I also like steak. So we're hosting the
- 50:43very first Capital Markets steak Out Saturday, June twenty fourth. You can get
- 50:47more information about that on Capital Markets social media or website capital market dot net.
- 50:54And and it's it is what it what it sounds like. You had
- 50:59me at steak out. You had me at steak I'll just say that,
- 51:01yep uh. And you mentioned the meat market there. I mean everything's good
- 51:05there with the wine and cheese shop and the meat market, but I mean
- 51:07that's that's big city kind of stuff here. Think about in town. We
- 51:12have all the resources and purveyors under one roof to really kick off and host
- 51:17just a fantastic evening. So we've got grills on site thanks to Chef Paul
- 51:24and AARP and our cooking classes. We've got Ted over at the Wine and
