- 0:00Speaker 1: I hope I'm suffering all day. Like I want to
- 0:03Speaker 1: put myself into the hurt locker and I want to
- 0:05Speaker 1: stay there as long as I can, And just like
- 0:10Speaker 1: I want to be dust when I cross the line.
- 0:13Speaker 1: I don't care what place I am, where I finish.
- 0:15Speaker 1: You know, you just want to know that you left
- 0:17Speaker 1: it all on the course. We have that moment where
- 0:20Speaker 1: we go do we keep pushing or do we back off?
- 0:22Speaker 1: Because I can make this easier, I don't want to
- 0:25Speaker 1: be that person. I want to make it hard as hell.
- 0:41Speaker 2: Hey, everybody, Emily A body here coming to you from Boston.
- 0:46Speaker 2: You are listening to episode two hundred and three of
- 0:50Speaker 2: Hurdle a While, this focused podcast where I connect with
- 0:53Speaker 2: everyone from your favorite athletes to top experts and industry
- 0:56Speaker 2: CEOs about their highest.
- 0:57Speaker 3: Highs, toughest moments, and everything in between.
- 1:01Speaker 2: We all go through hurdles in life, and my goal
- 1:03Speaker 2: through these discussions is to empower you to better navigate
- 1:06Speaker 2: yours and move with intention so that you can stride
- 1:10Speaker 2: towards your own big potential and of course have some
- 1:13Speaker 2: fun along the way.
- 1:16Speaker 3: Now, if you've been following along, you know that I
- 1:18Speaker 3: have been.
- 1:19Speaker 2: Running around Boston for about a week now and today
- 1:23Speaker 2: is the Boston Marathon. This episode coming out on Monday,
- 1:28Speaker 2: April eighteenth, and over the weekend on Saturday night, I
- 1:31Speaker 2: had the awesome opportunity to sit down with twenty eighteen
- 1:36Speaker 2: Boston Marathon champion, veteran to hurdle, two time Olympian, Boston legend.
- 1:44Speaker 3: Dez London.
- 1:45Speaker 2: I am so excited to appropriately put this episode into
- 1:50Speaker 2: the feed today and so so grateful to Dez for
- 1:55Speaker 2: her time.
- 1:56Speaker 3: You want to talk to a woman who is in
- 1:58Speaker 3: demand here in.
- 1:59Speaker 2: Boston in the days leading up to the marathon, and
- 2:02Speaker 2: Des is it. Her schedule was jam packed, but she
- 2:06Speaker 2: was able to make some time to hang out with
- 2:09Speaker 2: me and celebrate her new partnership with a partner and
- 2:13Speaker 2: sponsor of the show Inside Tracker. I'll talk to you
- 2:16Speaker 2: all about Inside Tracker and just a little bit, but
- 2:19Speaker 2: a huge thank you to that team for reconnecting Des
- 2:23Speaker 2: and me.
- 2:23Speaker 3: It was so fun to sit down with her, and.
- 2:25Speaker 2: Also our friends now at TB twelve for hosting us.
- 2:29Speaker 2: The facility is absolutely stunning. That feels like the biggest
- 2:34Speaker 2: understatement of all time. The staff super super friendly. If
- 2:37Speaker 2: you are in the Boston area. I cannot recommend it
- 2:40Speaker 2: enough that you head on over there and check it out.
- 2:44Speaker 2: But let me talk to you a little bit more
- 2:45Speaker 2: about my conversation with Dez. We talk about it all,
- 2:48Speaker 2: not just what she is hoping to do today in Boston,
- 2:53Speaker 2: but really getting into a lot about what makes Dez,
- 2:57Speaker 2: in my humble opinion, one of the goats it comes
- 3:00Speaker 2: to female distance running. Like I mentioned, Dez is a
- 3:04Speaker 2: two time Olympian. She has done some really impressive things
- 3:07Speaker 2: in her career, including landing the fifty k world record,
- 3:12Speaker 2: running that distance in two hours fifty nine minutes fifty
- 3:15Speaker 2: four seconds a casual five forty seven mile. We talk
- 3:20Speaker 2: about what does is, why is? We also talk about
- 3:23Speaker 2: how long she's going to keep at this, how she
- 3:26Speaker 2: feels about the people that may have some kind of
- 3:28Speaker 2: feeling about the fact that you should hang up for sneakers,
- 3:31Speaker 2: so to speak, what's coming down the pipe for her
- 3:34Speaker 2: in her new role with Brooks as their chief running advisor,
- 3:39Speaker 2: and a bunch of other goodness. If you're out in
- 3:41Speaker 2: Boston today and you are listening to this in real time,
- 3:44Speaker 2: I will be out there as well, somewhere around Heartbreak Hill.
- 3:47Speaker 2: So look for the Hurdler hat and make sure you're
- 3:50Speaker 2: following along with Hurdle over on social It's at Hurdle podcast.
- 3:54Speaker 2: I am over at Emily Abadi. A huge thank you
- 3:57Speaker 2: to all of the wonderful people that have made me
- 3:59Speaker 2: feel so at home here in Boston over the past week.
- 4:02Speaker 2: It has been an absolute blast getting to hang out
- 4:04Speaker 2: with you. I r L and all I've got to
- 4:07Speaker 2: say is more of this, more in person, more togetherness.
- 4:11Speaker 2: It feels really really good. And with that, let's get
- 4:15Speaker 2: to Dez. Let's get to hurdling.
- 4:36Speaker 1: Pretty good.
- 4:36Speaker 3: Yeah they took directions.
- 4:37Speaker 1: Yeah, they're stepping it up.
- 4:38Speaker 3: They're stepping it up.
- 4:39Speaker 2: This is I feel honored because this is the third
- 4:43Speaker 2: time that that does has been on Hurdle.
- 4:46Speaker 3: This will go live in the Hurdle Feed on Monday morning.
- 4:50Speaker 2: You will be good time, probably just getting up, preparing
- 4:54Speaker 2: to get to the start, and people will be listening
- 4:58Speaker 2: to your angelic voice. Now, I want it to tell
- 5:00Speaker 2: you something about listening to your voice for the last weeks,
- 5:04Speaker 2: as someone does when they're preparing to like interview something
- 5:07Speaker 2: someone I like listen to a handful of podcasts that
- 5:11Speaker 2: you had been on outside of Hurdle and I've probably
- 5:15Speaker 2: listened to like three hours of days this week.
- 5:19Speaker 1: You ready for another hour?
- 5:20Speaker 3: I'm so ready. She's burnt out, My mom burnt out.
- 5:23Speaker 2: But I will tell you that I woke up in
- 5:25Speaker 2: the middle of the night the other night, and sometimes
- 5:28Speaker 2: when I do that, and I need to go back
- 5:29Speaker 2: to sleep, and like the immediate backwards counting from one
- 5:32Speaker 2: hundred is in doing menie service. I turn on a
- 5:35Speaker 2: meditation and so I'm like lying in bed, I'm like
- 5:38Speaker 2: half awake. I'm going to turn on the meditation and
- 5:41Speaker 2: instead of Andy Puticombe speaking to me, all of a sudden,
- 5:45Speaker 2: Des Lindon starts coming out of my phone at three am.
- 5:48Speaker 3: And I was too lazy to change this.
- 5:50Speaker 1: Andy puticomb there's a joke about being in bed together
- 5:53Speaker 1: here that I'm not even gonna.
- 5:57Speaker 3: Wow. So yeah, here we here. We answered it. This
- 5:59Speaker 3: is yeah, we're here.
- 6:01Speaker 2: We're here, Like I said, super grateful to be sitting
- 6:04Speaker 2: down here today with Dez, just a few days before
- 6:07Speaker 2: she toes.
- 6:07Speaker 3: The line for her ninth Boston Marathon number nine. Wow nine,
- 6:11Speaker 3: how's it feel? How are you feeling today?
- 6:14Speaker 1: Really relaxed. I'm excited to be here. I keep thinking
- 6:17Speaker 1: about the fall and the fall colors, which are great,
- 6:20Speaker 1: but they just felt all wrong. You know, it's daffodils.
- 6:24Speaker 1: We need the daffodils, We need spring weather. It feels
- 6:28Speaker 1: like we're back on track in a great way. So
- 6:31Speaker 1: I'm excited, you know, I'm sometimes I miss like the
- 6:36Speaker 1: unknown of the marathon, Like I feel like it's old
- 6:39Speaker 1: hat at this point. But since we had that long break,
- 6:42Speaker 1: I'm a little nervous, anxious, excited, a.
- 6:45Speaker 3: Little nervous, anxious, excited.
- 6:46Speaker 2: Well, to kick us off here tonight, I thought it
- 6:49Speaker 2: could be fun if we all together participate in some
- 6:52Speaker 2: des trivia.
- 6:54Speaker 3: Does that sound good to you, guys? Awesome? Okay, some
- 6:56Speaker 3: days trivia.
- 6:57Speaker 2: So the first trivia and then you can get the answer,
- 7:00Speaker 2: so allow them to try to figure out the answer,
- 7:04Speaker 2: and then you can get again.
- 7:05Speaker 3: They're gonna get it, but they might. This seems like
- 7:07Speaker 3: a knowledgeable group. Okay.
- 7:09Speaker 2: When Des won the marathon in twenty eighteen, she was
- 7:15Speaker 2: the first American woman to win it in how many years?
- 7:20Speaker 3: Thirty three? Someone yelled it and then I echoed it. Yeah,
- 7:23Speaker 3: I took your role.
- 7:24Speaker 2: I'm sorry, thirty three years, first American woman to win
- 7:26Speaker 2: it in thirty three years. According to Outside Online, des
- 7:30Speaker 2: has collected how round how many bottles of whiskey?
- 7:33Speaker 3: Is it A eighteen, B fifty two or C thirty?
- 7:40Speaker 1: When is this interview from so it's gonna be fifty two?
- 7:46Speaker 3: You told him it was thirty So this is old news.
- 7:48Speaker 3: This wold news.
- 7:50Speaker 2: Maybe at the beginning of the pandemic it was thirty Yes, okay,
- 7:53Speaker 2: according to I really digging into the interview archives here.
- 7:56Speaker 2: According to Men's Journal, sorry, does his biggest.
- 8:03Speaker 3: Food a vice?
- 8:04Speaker 2: Is it's either a French fries, B donuts or C croissants?
- 8:14Speaker 1: Does it's gotta be donuts?
- 8:15Speaker 3: Its donuts? Now, we get it right. When you get
- 8:17Speaker 3: it right? When you choose a donut? What donut do
- 8:22Speaker 3: you choose the.
- 8:24Speaker 1: One that speaks to me on the day. It's really
- 8:26Speaker 1: like what you need. But I like a very classic
- 8:29Speaker 1: glazed no bs donut.
- 8:32Speaker 2: You know I'm with that anyway. I'm excited to be
- 8:34Speaker 2: here with you. That's it for the trivia portion of
- 8:36Speaker 2: this podcast. I just thought that would have fun, be
- 8:38Speaker 2: a fun way for us to kick things off. I
- 8:41Speaker 2: do have a serious question to start us off here today,
- 8:45Speaker 2: and I think I know how you're going to answer this,
- 8:48Speaker 2: But in a race, you have the opportunity do either
- 8:54Speaker 2: come in first place and not PR or last place
- 9:00Speaker 2: and PR.
- 9:02Speaker 3: What do you choose?
- 9:03Speaker 1: Win, baby, win, win, see okay, every time.
- 9:07Speaker 2: So definitely relevant to you in your journey because arguably
- 9:11Speaker 2: becoming the twenty eighteen Boston Marathon champion was a big
- 9:14Speaker 2: deal for you. Yes, yeah, kind of a big deal.
- 9:17Speaker 2: But I feel as though I told you. I listened
- 9:19Speaker 2: to like three four hours of Des Linden talking this week,
- 9:23Speaker 2: and it seems to me and what I appreciate about
- 9:26Speaker 2: you is that you are so dialed in to your journey.
- 9:31Speaker 2: You are so dialed in to going after your own
- 9:34Speaker 2: potential and finding your own happy See what I did
- 9:38Speaker 2: there with the Brooks kind of reference. What it interests
- 9:41Speaker 2: me that that was your answer because I didn't know
- 9:43Speaker 2: which way you were going to go with that.
- 9:44Speaker 1: Yeah, no, when you pre like, when you put it
- 9:46Speaker 1: that way, prs make all the sense in the world.
- 9:49Speaker 1: But I think there's so much time to explore our
- 9:53Speaker 1: personal best and push ourselves in that way and we
- 9:57Speaker 1: just change the mark like Okay, now I'm or like
- 10:00Speaker 1: now I'm trying ultras or whatever it may be. But
- 10:03Speaker 1: competition I think at the highest level is just so temporary,
- 10:08Speaker 1: and for me, it's like, Okay, we're on the clock.
- 10:10Speaker 1: I want to find out how I match up against
- 10:12Speaker 1: these people while I'm at my best, and then we
- 10:16Speaker 1: can pivot and I can chase personal best or personal challenges,
- 10:21Speaker 1: and there's always going to be time for that, So
- 10:24Speaker 1: that's more motivating to me. I'm also aware that I'm
- 10:28Speaker 1: not the fastest, so like if you took me to London,
- 10:31Speaker 1: I could probably run fast ish, but the front would
- 10:35Speaker 1: be like, let's see it on Boston, New York, Atlanta
- 10:39Speaker 1: Trial something like that. I think there's a level of
- 10:43Speaker 1: I can be the smartest, I can run within myself,
- 10:48Speaker 1: but then be competitive, and so I love those challenges
- 10:51Speaker 1: and that's why I would take a win for now
- 10:54Speaker 1: that will shift.
- 10:54Speaker 3: For now, that'll shift well.
- 10:56Speaker 2: I mean, speaking of challenges, the fifty k challengeing amazing
- 11:00Speaker 2: performance by you with the smashing the fifty k world
- 11:05Speaker 2: record time with a two fifty nine, a fifty four
- 11:08Speaker 2: for those following along here, that's a five forty seven
- 11:12Speaker 2: mile pace. That's a pivot, and that's a really exciting
- 11:16Speaker 2: new challenge that you undertook.
- 11:18Speaker 3: So talk to us a.
- 11:19Speaker 2: Little bit about the why behind making that decision and
- 11:23Speaker 2: how you see a challenge like that kind of following
- 11:26Speaker 2: in line with where you're going.
- 11:28Speaker 1: Yeah, I mean that was sort of forced on us
- 11:32Speaker 1: as races were pulled off the schedule. So it was
- 11:36Speaker 1: something I've always wanted to do. And I think ultras
- 11:38Speaker 1: are hanging out there and dangling in the future as
- 11:41Speaker 1: a carrot, but we jumped into them a little bit
- 11:44Speaker 1: earlier than anticipated, just because marathons were off the table.
- 11:48Speaker 1: And so did anybody followed Destober? Yeah, so's this calendar club.
- 11:54Speaker 1: Thank you for following. I had a ton of fun.
- 11:56Speaker 1: It's a calendar club, and you do the mileage of
- 11:58Speaker 1: the day of the month. So October first, one mile,
- 12:01Speaker 1: October twentieth twenty miles. Sounds super simple until you get
- 12:05Speaker 1: to like the last week and a half, and then
- 12:07Speaker 1: it's a horrible idea and you're sad you put it
- 12:10Speaker 1: out to the public because you have to finish. So
- 12:13Speaker 1: I did that, and I was like, oh, I'm actually incredible,
- 12:16Speaker 1: incredibly durable, which I knew, but not in the context
- 12:19Speaker 1: of that last like one hundred and forty some odd
- 12:21Speaker 1: fifty some odd week, and so we use that just
- 12:24Speaker 1: as a big block of basework to get really strong,
- 12:28Speaker 1: see if I'm durable. And then races still weren't on
- 12:31Speaker 1: the calendar, so we said, let's create our own thing
- 12:33Speaker 1: and try something totally different. And like I said, marathons
- 12:37Speaker 1: have kind of felt a little stale where you're like,
- 12:39Speaker 1: I know exactly what's gonna happen. When we did the
- 12:42Speaker 1: fifty k, it was like, after twenty six point two miles,
- 12:46Speaker 1: I have no idea what's going to happen. And I
- 12:48Speaker 1: love that, like unknown, Let's see what Let's see what
- 12:51Speaker 1: happens out there. If it's fun, if I fail and
- 12:54Speaker 1: then I'm gonna want to try it again, or if
- 12:56Speaker 1: I'm really good at this, and maybe there's a future
- 12:58Speaker 1: in the longer distances for.
- 12:59Speaker 3: Me before that going for that distance.
- 13:04Speaker 2: In any of your marathon build ups, would you ever
- 13:06Speaker 2: run farther than the marathon with like different interval training
- 13:09Speaker 2: or anything like that.
- 13:10Speaker 1: Oh good, now, No, they're so crazy.
- 13:14Speaker 3: There's some crazy people out there.
- 13:15Speaker 1: No, I go, I would go up to twenty miles,
- 13:17Speaker 1: And then you spend the last couple of weeks and
- 13:19Speaker 1: you're like, I hope I can make it to the end.
- 13:23Speaker 2: You know, it's interesting to me also you kind of
- 13:26Speaker 2: talking about like learning about your resilience a little bit,
- 13:29Speaker 2: because I believe that you self describe yourself as someone
- 13:33Speaker 2: that's really hard working. I would argue that resilience and
- 13:37Speaker 2: hard working kind of go hand in hand. Willing to
- 13:39Speaker 2: put in all those miles, really spend a lot of
- 13:41Speaker 2: time on your feet. But I also know that you
- 13:44Speaker 2: don't particularly think of yourself as like the fastest horse
- 13:48Speaker 2: in the barn.
- 13:49Speaker 3: I would beg to differ. Why do you feel that way?
- 13:52Speaker 1: It's what keeps me working hard. It's just that thing
- 13:54Speaker 1: where you're like, I'm the underdog, and I'll always be
- 13:57Speaker 1: the underdog, and it doesn't matter what I accomplish. Someone's
- 13:59Speaker 1: going to say, here's why it doesn't matter, or here's
- 14:03Speaker 1: why it's not worthy or whatever. You know, And to me,
- 14:06Speaker 1: that's the thing that keeps me honest and working hard.
- 14:09Speaker 1: And I sort of like that. I like surprising people
- 14:12Speaker 1: and being like even throw a million reasons at why
- 14:14Speaker 1: I can't do something, and I'm going to just be
- 14:16Speaker 1: at homeworking and showing you why I can't. So have
- 14:19Speaker 1: fun managing the results in your mind.
- 14:23Speaker 2: You know that's also interesting to me as well, Like
- 14:25Speaker 2: this idea of I'm going to keep surprising people because
- 14:29Speaker 2: I don't know how many times I need to hear
- 14:31Speaker 2: Deslind and tell the world that she doesn't care about
- 14:33Speaker 2: what other people think. But it seems as though you're
- 14:36Speaker 2: still excited to do that. You're still excited to surprise people.
- 14:40Speaker 2: When you're as good at what you do as you are,
- 14:44Speaker 2: there are going to be people that doubt you and
- 14:47Speaker 2: that have things to say about you.
- 14:49Speaker 3: So what would your advice be.
- 14:52Speaker 2: Perhaps to someone who doesn't feel as though they're as
- 14:55Speaker 2: good at being like, I don't give a what anybody
- 14:57Speaker 2: else thinks, right, because it's not easy and I mean
- 15:00Speaker 2: I certainly certainly struggle with that.
- 15:03Speaker 1: Yeah, I mean I think you have to listen to
- 15:06Speaker 1: where that voice is coming from, and when you're getting feedback,
- 15:12Speaker 1: understand what that person is trying to tell you. Is
- 15:16Speaker 1: it constructive or is it just criticism? Is it coming
- 15:20Speaker 1: from a place of love? Like this is advice I want,
- 15:22Speaker 1: I think that you can use to help you get
- 15:24Speaker 1: better improve like you're making bad decisions. Who's it coming
- 15:28Speaker 1: from and what are their intentions? Because most of the
- 15:30Speaker 1: time it's from people we don't know, and we don't
- 15:34Speaker 1: even understand their intentions. But you look at the criticism
- 15:36Speaker 1: and you're like, that's just someone projecting or having a
- 15:40Speaker 1: bad day, or like it's not rooted in constructing constructive criticism.
- 15:44Speaker 1: So it's like, if it doesn't help you move forward,
- 15:48Speaker 1: change your actions in a positive way, maybe just ignore it,
- 15:53Speaker 1: Maybe just push it aside, and then really tune into
- 15:56Speaker 1: the people who have good intentions.
- 15:58Speaker 2: I also think that articulating your why can be really
- 16:02Speaker 2: helpful when it comes to staying the course and not
- 16:04Speaker 2: let you know, perhaps the negative opinions or the opinions
- 16:08Speaker 2: that aren't making you feel super stellar in your own
- 16:10Speaker 2: journey really infiltrate your mindset for you when it comes
- 16:15Speaker 2: to running these days, what would you say is your why?
- 16:19Speaker 3: Why does Dez Lindon keep showing?
- 16:23Speaker 1: That's a great question, because it's something I've been asking
- 16:26Speaker 1: myself a lot, like I have every reason to hang
- 16:30Speaker 1: them up and walk them away, like walk away. I
- 16:32Speaker 1: feel like so content with my career. I don't feel
- 16:36Speaker 1: like I have too much to prove. Like it's again,
- 16:38Speaker 1: it's like from people being like, well, maybe your career
- 16:40Speaker 1: wasn't that special, I'm like actually it was pretty special.
- 16:43Speaker 1: I'm pretty good with it, so it's a thing I've
- 16:46Speaker 1: been wrestling with a lot lately, and for a good
- 16:49Speaker 1: stretch it was like I don't really have one, and
- 16:51Speaker 1: then the fifty k was kind of fun, like I
- 16:53Speaker 1: actually am just enjoying this, and then coming back here
- 16:56Speaker 1: this year, I said it at a thing earlier and
- 17:00Speaker 1: it's just like, I just want to prove that I'm
- 17:03Speaker 1: not dead yet. There's still a little bit more and
- 17:06Speaker 1: I know there are people going like, all right, futures here,
- 17:10Speaker 1: like next person, line them up. I think it's a
- 17:12Speaker 1: mistake for people to underestimate me, whether it's in this
- 17:15Speaker 1: marathon or the next one. There's stuff in my work,
- 17:20Speaker 1: there's workouts, and there's a feeling in my stride and
- 17:23Speaker 1: in my run that tells me there's some really great
- 17:26Speaker 1: running left. It's just finding the right day. So I
- 17:29Speaker 1: think that'll be really fun to have that day and
- 17:33Speaker 1: then just kind of have the smile where you're like, yeah, no,
- 17:36Speaker 1: not dead yet.
- 17:39Speaker 2: And I think a lot of people can relate to
- 17:41Speaker 2: that idea, right of that why that feeling of like
- 17:45Speaker 2: it just feels right in my soul. Do you remember
- 17:49Speaker 2: and you know I would assume that this was it's
- 17:52Speaker 2: been a minute, but maybe the first time or the
- 17:55Speaker 2: first race that you walked away and you were like, yeah,
- 17:59Speaker 2: this is it, Like this is what's up?
- 18:03Speaker 1: I don't I couldn't pinpoint it, to be honest. I mean,
- 18:05Speaker 1: I felt like I took to distance running pretty naturally
- 18:08Speaker 1: as a kid, and then I struggled in college, and
- 18:13Speaker 1: you know, as a pro, I think it's been like
- 18:17Speaker 1: brief moments when you're out having a day and it's like, oh, yeah,
- 18:20Speaker 1: like I'm actually adapting to training. I'm pretty good at this.
- 18:24Speaker 1: But I think there's just moments where you're out in
- 18:27Speaker 1: a regular run it's pretty unspectacular, and you get in
- 18:32Speaker 1: this rhythm and I think everyone has a moment where
- 18:34Speaker 1: they get in the zone and they're just feel like
- 18:36Speaker 1: fluid and you're like, I'm meant to do this, like
- 18:39Speaker 1: I'm actually built for this. And so I couldn't tell
- 18:42Speaker 1: you the day, but I'm sure it was on some
- 18:43Speaker 1: unspectacular run that turned into like a zen moment where like,
- 18:46Speaker 1: oh this is where I belong.
- 18:48Speaker 2: When you said you struggled in college, what did that
- 18:50Speaker 2: struggle look like for you?
- 18:52Speaker 1: I think it was balancing life as a college student
- 18:57Speaker 1: at Arizona.
- 18:58Speaker 3: State and for that from that, what you will, yeah, exactly.
- 19:03Speaker 1: And being a runner on a really good Division one team,
- 19:08Speaker 1: and you know, like, how do you commit to that?
- 19:10Speaker 1: I mean, we were practicing at five point fifty in
- 19:13Speaker 1: the morning and we're like, coach, can we please go
- 19:15Speaker 1: at five thirty? It's so hot? This is miserable. He's like,
- 19:18Speaker 1: I'm not waking up any earlier, Like you can do
- 19:20Speaker 1: it on your own. And you're like, I might do that.
- 19:22Speaker 1: So you're doing that, which is a high level of dedication,
- 19:26Speaker 1: and we're taking naps when normal people are getting up
- 19:28Speaker 1: to start their day having already run ten twelve miles
- 19:31Speaker 1: or whatever it was. And then you have like being
- 19:34Speaker 1: a student and like I got two degrees and I
- 19:37Speaker 1: wanted to figure out what I wanted to do for
- 19:39Speaker 1: the rest of my life, and you know, it's that
- 19:42Speaker 1: and then there's the social aspect as well, So it's
- 19:44Speaker 1: balancing all these things. And you're not a professional runner.
- 19:48Speaker 1: You're a student athlete. So for me, I think I
- 19:51Speaker 1: struggled as an athlete, and I don't think that was
- 19:54Speaker 1: the wrong thing. I think I was a really great
- 19:57Speaker 1: student athlete, right so that's how I look at it.
- 19:59Speaker 2: Yeah, okay, well I would think also that or I
- 20:03Speaker 2: know that that wasn't the only time that you've struggled
- 20:07Speaker 2: in your what then became professional career as a runner.
- 20:11Speaker 2: So many of us, whether we are recreational everyday runners
- 20:15Speaker 2: myself or pro athletes like yourself, definitely go through extreme
- 20:19Speaker 2: hurdles along.
- 20:23Speaker 3: Their journey and sport.
- 20:25Speaker 2: Talk to me a little bit about the hurdles that
- 20:28Speaker 2: you've encountered. Specific let's go with injury, because I know
- 20:32Speaker 2: having spoken with you before that some of them definitely
- 20:36Speaker 2: came at the least desirable time.
- 20:40Speaker 3: So talk to us a little bit about that.
- 20:41Speaker 1: Yeah, undred percent. I mean, I think that's like the
- 20:44Speaker 1: guarantee if you're in running and you're pushing yourself, like
- 20:47Speaker 1: at some point you're going to go past the threshold
- 20:49Speaker 1: and be injured, and then you're going to look back
- 20:51Speaker 1: and be like, man, I should haven't I should have
- 20:53Speaker 1: seen this song, this this, But it's like it's usually
- 20:56Speaker 1: when you're running your best and you're like, I can
- 20:58Speaker 1: push a little harder, I can do one more, mind,
- 21:00Speaker 1: I can go a little bit faster, And that was
- 21:02Speaker 1: my kind of scenario situation so twenty eleven, finish second
- 21:08Speaker 1: Boston Marathon by two seconds, Like, all right, let's go.
- 21:12Speaker 1: I'm good at this. I'm like, I've proved to myself
- 21:14Speaker 1: mentally that I can compete with the best in the world.
- 21:18Speaker 1: Next thing on deck is the Olympic trials. Make my
- 21:20Speaker 1: first Olympic team. That's awesome. That is like what you
- 21:23Speaker 1: dream of as a little kid. I want to go
- 21:25Speaker 1: to the Olympics. I'm on the perfect trajectory. I just
- 21:28Speaker 1: proved I can compete with anyone medals, Like that's what
- 21:31Speaker 1: we think, right, I want to be on the podium.
- 21:34Speaker 1: I think I can win a medal. I've just I
- 21:37Speaker 1: have all the data to back it up. And I'm
- 21:39Speaker 1: out training and doing the thing, getting ready for London.
- 21:43Speaker 1: A couple weeks out, feel a sharp pain in my
- 21:46Speaker 1: right quad and it's like, oh, it's ten tonightis Like,
- 21:50Speaker 1: you'll be okay. I know how to deal with ten Tonight's.
- 21:52Speaker 1: I'm pretty tough, Like, okay, I'm going to try to
- 21:55Speaker 1: keep going on ultra g so on and so forth,
- 21:58Speaker 1: and it just never turn a corner. And so I
- 22:00Speaker 1: went to the London Olympics. I've run I don't know
- 22:03Speaker 1: how many marathon It's probably close to twenty and I
- 22:06Speaker 1: only have one DNF and that was at the Olympic Games.
- 22:09Speaker 1: So stepped off a few miles into the course and
- 22:13Speaker 1: I found out later that it was a fracture in
- 22:15Speaker 1: my femur, and a pretty large fracture that you know,
- 22:19Speaker 1: set me back a long time. And then you're faced
- 22:21Speaker 1: with do I do this for four more years? Do
- 22:25Speaker 1: I want to be a runner? Is my why strong enough?
- 22:28Speaker 1: And so it threw a lot of questions at me.
- 22:32Speaker 2: Can you talk to us a little bit more about
- 22:34Speaker 2: that headspace? Because I know obviously encountering injury you do
- 22:40Speaker 2: battle with that why, and then as a result, you
- 22:43Speaker 2: also battle with a lot of questions about your identity.
- 22:47Speaker 2: Right now, when you ask yourself who is des Lindon,
- 22:51Speaker 2: what would you say your identity is the most rooted
- 22:54Speaker 2: in at this.
- 22:55Speaker 1: Moment dog lover for sure.
- 22:59Speaker 3: Wow, that was an unexpected but excellent, excellent answer.
- 23:04Speaker 2: I thought that might might maybe we would go like
- 23:07Speaker 2: with something about the fifty two whiskies that you indulge
- 23:10Speaker 2: in or coffee connoisseur.
- 23:12Speaker 1: Dog Lover love to throw a get a curb.
- 23:15Speaker 2: If you took out the word two time Olympian tomorrow
- 23:22Speaker 2: from your Instagram bio. Do you have any feelings that
- 23:25Speaker 2: stir in your heart about that?
- 23:27Speaker 1: I was like, well, Boston Champlin's still be on their
- 23:29Speaker 1: subcod It's all good. I that's a great question. I
- 23:41Speaker 1: don't know. I think, man, if there was like a
- 23:44Speaker 1: blank slate and it was like, well, you you're thirty
- 23:47Speaker 1: eight and you don't have anything on there, I would
- 23:50Speaker 1: be pretty sad. If there were things that I was
- 23:53Speaker 1: doing in the meantime that were like at that level,
- 23:56Speaker 1: I think I would be content. So it's to me,
- 23:59Speaker 1: it's like what I would I have done in that time?
- 24:03Speaker 1: And I think there's things that if running were taken
- 24:05Speaker 1: away from me tomorrow, I could fill up my time
- 24:09Speaker 1: and feel really comfortable with my life and how I
- 24:12Speaker 1: spend my time.
- 24:12Speaker 2: I think the bigger question becomes who is Deaz like
- 24:17Speaker 2: Doug Love what.
- 24:19Speaker 3: I'm sorry, No, You're this is great.
- 24:23Speaker 2: What I mean and what I mean by that question
- 24:25Speaker 2: is like who do you want to be like?
- 24:27Speaker 3: At your core? When you think about your values.
- 24:30Speaker 2: And the kind of person that you want to be,
- 24:31Speaker 2: the kind of wife that you want to be, the
- 24:33Speaker 2: kind of friend, the kind of in some circumstances teammate
- 24:36Speaker 2: motivational human as you are, even though maybe you wouldn't
- 24:40Speaker 2: step and say, like, that's my identity.
- 24:41Speaker 3: I'm a motivational human. But who is Dez?
- 24:45Speaker 2: Like, what are the qualities about yourself that you are
- 24:47Speaker 2: the most proud of.
- 24:49Speaker 1: I think I'm incredibly curious, which sounds kind of silly,
- 24:52Speaker 1: but I think like whatever I am interested in at
- 24:57Speaker 1: the moment, I will be very curious about it, dig
- 25:00Speaker 1: in and try to understand it and explore it and
- 25:03Speaker 1: challenge it. So I think I'm always trying to figure
- 25:07Speaker 1: things out and solve them. And I think that that
- 25:10Speaker 1: applies to most parts of my life except for my relationship.
- 25:14Speaker 1: I'm not trying to solve anything that We're good.
- 25:16Speaker 3: You're good there. I'm sure your husband's happy to hear that.
- 25:20Speaker 2: Speaking of curiosity a big thing, I'm sure you're curious
- 25:23Speaker 2: and excited to dive into would be your new role
- 25:25Speaker 2: as the chief running advisor at Brooks. Talk to us
- 25:29Speaker 2: a little bit about how that came to fruition and
- 25:32Speaker 2: what about it perhaps you're most curious about.
- 25:36Speaker 1: Oh, it's so exciting and honestly, all the credits to
- 25:40Speaker 1: Brooks and my agent Josh Cox for again thinking outside
- 25:43Speaker 1: of the box. And I think that we've had so
- 25:45Speaker 1: many great conversations like how do we fill time in
- 25:47Speaker 1: the pandemic? What can we do to engage the community,
- 25:50Speaker 1: what's exciting? So that's already the conversation, and then as
- 25:54Speaker 1: we were redoing athlete contract, it was like, well, what's next,
- 25:58Speaker 1: you know, and how can we parades for that? So
- 26:01Speaker 1: hats off to Brooks for even mentioning that and for
- 26:05Speaker 1: Josh being creative to come up with, you know, this
- 26:08Speaker 1: kind of next phase that I don't have to jump
- 26:11Speaker 1: into immediately, but we're working on and we're building and
- 26:13Speaker 1: so that's super exciting, and it's it has a couple
- 26:17Speaker 1: of bullet points of this is what you're doing in
- 26:19Speaker 1: the role, but it's also very broad and I love
- 26:23Speaker 1: all these different things about the sport, and like I said,
- 26:25Speaker 1: I'm super curious, like how can we make events better?
- 26:28Speaker 1: Like I have this pitch, like, okay, guys, it's going
- 26:30Speaker 1: to be New Year's Eve Seattle crit style racing. We're
- 26:35Speaker 1: running through Pike's Market. Kids are going first, the adults
- 26:39Speaker 1: are going second, the pros are going late, and then
- 26:41Speaker 1: we're popping bottles at midnight, like a whole day. Everyone's
- 26:44Speaker 1: going to be there, right you guys are signed up, see, like,
- 26:48Speaker 1: how can we make events fun? Engaging? How can we
- 26:51Speaker 1: connect community pros? And so there's all these things on
- 26:53Speaker 1: that side, you know, and then inspiring Coaches program that
- 26:59Speaker 1: Brooks already has. It's one of my favorite things. I'm
- 27:01Speaker 1: going to be able to kind of get my hands
- 27:02Speaker 1: on that a little bit and see what it's all about.
- 27:05Speaker 1: So I love that. It's like really abroad right now,
- 27:08Speaker 1: and when I find the things that I'm the most
- 27:11Speaker 1: passionate about, I'm like, ooh, that's mine. That's mine. It's
- 27:14Speaker 1: like a little buffet at the moment.
- 27:16Speaker 3: Real talk.
- 27:17Speaker 1: Yeah, that was real.
- 27:20Speaker 2: A little bit more okay when you announced that, did
- 27:27Speaker 2: you get any pushback from people saying what you kind
- 27:31Speaker 2: of alluded to before, which was that some individuals may
- 27:37Speaker 2: feel as though it's time for you to tie your
- 27:39Speaker 2: laces together and throw your shoes over a telephone line?
- 27:43Speaker 1: Yeah? Yeah, so is this a retirement announcement? Sort of
- 27:47Speaker 1: got a lot of questions about that, It's not.
- 27:49Speaker 3: How did that make you feel?
- 27:51Speaker 1: I thought it was kind of funny, I mean, particularly
- 27:53Speaker 1: with the big race coming up. It's like read the news. Yeah, no,
- 28:00Speaker 1: I mean eventually it's going to happen. That's one hundred percent,
- 28:04Speaker 1: So I get it. I understand it. And my fall
- 28:08Speaker 1: last year was really tough. I think this particular race
- 28:11Speaker 1: the spring is going to be shy of my best
- 28:14Speaker 1: stuff and hope. I'm hopeful that I still have some
- 28:17Speaker 1: great running and it's possible that I don't, but my
- 28:21Speaker 1: body says otherwise certain days. So you know, you don't
- 28:26Speaker 1: have to see that. You can think whatever you want.
- 28:28Speaker 1: That doesn't mean I'm going to stop trying to achieve
- 28:32Speaker 1: those high end goals.
- 28:38Speaker 2: Taking a break from today's episode to talk to you
- 28:40Speaker 2: about my sponsor at inside Tracker. Inside Tracker was founded

- 29:21Speaker 2: With a quick mobile blood draw and DNA swab along
- 29:24Speaker 2: with info from my wearables, I was able to receive
- 29:28Speaker 2: detailed results that revealed that I had lower levels of
- 29:31Speaker 2: iron and farridon and those results they also came with
- 29:34Speaker 2: recommendations on some holistic modifications to.

- 30:09Speaker 3: Something else that I.
- 30:11Speaker 2: Love about your career was the time that you purposefully
- 30:17Speaker 2: kind of took a step back from running. And it's
- 30:20Speaker 2: something that isn't talked about enough. And during that time,
- 30:26Speaker 2: what you told me for hurdle was that you were
- 30:29Speaker 2: seeking to find the joy in your sport. Again, I'm
- 30:33Speaker 2: sure there are a lot of people listening to this
- 30:35Speaker 2: both live and in the feed, who feel as though
- 30:38Speaker 2: they have wavered with their relationship with running at one
- 30:42Speaker 2: point or another because of the hurdles that they've been navigating.
- 30:45Speaker 2: Can you talk to us a little bit about what
- 30:48Speaker 2: that time period was like for you and when it
- 30:50Speaker 2: felt right for you to really get back in just
- 30:53Speaker 2: before that really special time in your career.
- 30:56Speaker 1: Yeah, I mean they were I've done this twice truthfully
- 31:00Speaker 1: to and it was really necessary. Once was forced by injury.
- 31:03Speaker 1: So I took a training stint in Kenya, which is
- 31:07Speaker 1: kind of off the grid. It's sort of frowned upon, like, hey,
- 31:09Speaker 1: there's a lot of doping in Kenya. But got some
- 31:12Speaker 1: really good advice from folks that I know that are
- 31:15Speaker 1: over there, and it had a great setup, and I
- 31:18Speaker 1: was like, I'm going to go somewhere else in the
- 31:19Speaker 1: world and just try and experience running in a different
- 31:23Speaker 1: way and be around a totally different culture and learn
- 31:25Speaker 1: about it. And you know, you go out there for
- 31:27Speaker 1: your regular run on a Wednesday and there's a fart
- 31:29Speaker 1: like going on with like, you know, three hundred Kenyons,
- 31:33Speaker 1: and most of them are never going to make it.
- 31:36Speaker 1: You're not going to see them on the Boston start line.
- 31:38Speaker 1: But they start and they go for as long as
- 31:40Speaker 1: they can and a lot of them don't finish, but
- 31:43Speaker 1: they stop and then they walk home and then they
- 31:45Speaker 1: try again the next day, right, And that was cool.
- 31:47Speaker 1: I was like, Oh, they're going to do this, like
- 31:49Speaker 1: whether they make it or not, it's just part of
- 31:51Speaker 1: their lifestyle. That's awesome. You go out and run on
- 31:53Speaker 1: the trails and there's this tiny they're just tiny little
- 31:56Speaker 1: kids and they love the tourists. It's mazungas the white people.
- 31:59Speaker 1: And they're like, how are you? How are you?
- 32:01Speaker 3: How are you?
- 32:01Speaker 1: And they want to touch your they want to touch you,
- 32:03Speaker 1: they want to run with you, and they can run
- 32:04Speaker 1: with you for way too long, like.
- 32:08Speaker 2: I'm trying to drop you like you're six, and like, dang,
- 32:13Speaker 2: saw some of those out there today on the five K.
- 32:15Speaker 1: Courts totally exactly, and you're like they like they love it.
- 32:19Speaker 1: It's like I'm going to go run with the tour
- 32:21Speaker 1: like the tourists here in town. And so that was
- 32:23Speaker 1: super refreshing. And then I came back and you know,
- 32:25Speaker 1: I was like, Okay, I feel like I'm that and truthfully,
- 32:29Speaker 1: this is super late in my career, but I feel
- 32:30Speaker 1: like that's when I learned to love running. I always
- 32:33Speaker 1: liked competing. I liked that, but if you told me, like,
- 32:36Speaker 1: go out and do a regular run, I'm like, that's
- 32:38Speaker 1: kind of boring.
- 32:40Speaker 3: What are years that.
- 32:42Speaker 1: Two thousand and fourteen?
- 32:44Speaker 3: Okay, okay, yeah, so another for a while.
- 32:47Speaker 1: And so that was one way I feel like I
- 32:49Speaker 1: was like, Okay, I've kind of refound this well dug
- 32:52Speaker 1: into loving the process of running. And then in twenty seventeen,
- 32:57Speaker 1: I was very fed up with the competitions of it
- 33:00Speaker 1: and just felt like I was baying my head against
- 33:02Speaker 1: the wall. And when I decided to run professionally, my
- 33:07Speaker 1: high school coach from back in the days, super basic advice,
- 33:11Speaker 1: but he's like, yeah, you should do that as long
- 33:13Speaker 1: as you're having fun. You know, like, if you can
- 33:15Speaker 1: make a living from it and you're having fun, go
- 33:18Speaker 1: for it. Like that's a great thing to try, and
- 33:21Speaker 1: then you don't have to worry later when you're older,
- 33:23Speaker 1: like what.
- 33:23Speaker 3: If, what if?
- 33:24Speaker 1: So, you know, but it's single line in there as
- 33:26Speaker 1: long as you're having fun. And in twenty seventeen, it
- 33:29Speaker 1: wasn't fun. It was like forced work. It felt like
- 33:33Speaker 1: I had a contract and I was like, like it
- 33:35Speaker 1: was way too long to count backwards. It was being
- 33:37Speaker 1: being at mile seven going like, man, the finish is
- 33:41Speaker 1: pretty far away at a marathon to do so it
- 33:44Speaker 1: just felt like work every day. And fortunately, you know,
- 33:49Speaker 1: Brooks has been super good to me and they're very understanding.
- 33:51Speaker 1: It's like, you can take a break, that's okay. So
- 33:55Speaker 1: I did, and you know, I was like when I
- 33:58Speaker 1: missed running up again, and if I don't, then you
- 34:01Speaker 1: just call it in and say hey, I'm like I'm
- 34:03Speaker 1: hanging them up. That's fine. This isn't fun anymore. And
- 34:05Speaker 1: there are other things that I can be doing with
- 34:08Speaker 1: my life, and I can start getting a new Instagram bio.
- 34:11Speaker 2: A new Instagram bio. So do you remember when it
- 34:15Speaker 2: started to feel good again?
- 34:19Speaker 1: You know, it's a lot like we were talking about earlier.
- 34:22Speaker 1: It was pretty unspectacular days where you're like, oh, I'm
- 34:24Speaker 1: actually pretty good at this, Like this feels effortless, and
- 34:28Speaker 1: like you look at your wrist and go, that shouldn't.
- 34:31Speaker 1: And so it's minor workouts where you're like, yeah, no,
- 34:34Speaker 1: I think that I should still be doing this. There's
- 34:36Speaker 1: more that I want to do. And it wasn't like
- 34:39Speaker 1: one day, one moment. It was a little hints of
- 34:42Speaker 1: it here and there, but it took I want at
- 34:45Speaker 1: the timeline has changed from a number of different people,
- 34:47Speaker 1: but I want to say, like, really, when I got
- 34:49Speaker 1: in the right headspace was probably like three months later.
- 34:51Speaker 2: Okay, And I mean, if you're following the timeline here,
- 34:55Speaker 2: this happened in twenty seventeen, and then we know what
- 34:57Speaker 2: happens in the spring of twenty eighteen. So it's just
- 35:01Speaker 2: such a beautiful moment of talking about and acknowledging the
- 35:05Speaker 2: hard work and sticking it out through those really tough times.
- 35:09Speaker 2: I would imagine, aside from the fact that maybe running
- 35:13Speaker 2: didn't feel the same, that you were probably struggling a
- 35:15Speaker 2: little bit mentally during that time, like not only with
- 35:19Speaker 2: the identity piece as we were talking about, but just
- 35:22Speaker 2: like feeling frustrated about the fact that like this thing
- 35:25Speaker 2: that you loved didn't feel the same. And where were
- 35:29Speaker 2: you seeking joy during that time?
- 35:32Speaker 3: Because for me, when I.
- 35:33Speaker 2: Can't run, I'm like, shoot, I really got to like
- 35:36Speaker 2: reanalyze everything in my life and like find some other
- 35:38Speaker 2: sources of happiness.
- 35:40Speaker 3: So for you during that time, like where were you
- 35:41Speaker 3: finding your happiness?
- 35:42Speaker 1: Oh, I don't have that problem at all. Like my downtime,
- 35:45Speaker 1: I'm like, oh, can I have two more weeks? Coach
- 35:48Speaker 1: is like, no, let's go. I mean it was actually
- 35:51Speaker 1: quite nice to just stay put at home for a
- 35:53Speaker 1: bit because you're traveling to races, you're doing events, you're
- 35:56Speaker 1: doing engagements, and so it was time then I got
- 36:00Speaker 1: to stay home. I got to go fishing more often,
- 36:03Speaker 1: and like paddling a kayak, play with the dogs. I
- 36:08Speaker 1: became a dog lover at that time. So yeah, I
- 36:11Speaker 1: was just digging into things that I don't normally get
- 36:14Speaker 1: to do, and even like staying up a little later,
- 36:17Speaker 1: having one extra beer, like okay, this like I feel
- 36:20Speaker 1: like I got a little taste of like what normal
- 36:23Speaker 1: people do and it was good. And then you're like, okay,
- 36:27Speaker 1: this is actually just normal. I want to do the
- 36:30Speaker 1: other thing. So when he felt normal, it was like, okay,
- 36:33Speaker 1: maybe I shift.
- 36:34Speaker 3: To pivot a little bit.
- 36:35Speaker 2: I know that how you fuel your body obviously as
- 36:39Speaker 2: an elite athlete, super super critical. Can we talk about,
- 36:43Speaker 2: aside from beer, what does Lindon is kind of consuming
- 36:51Speaker 2: in a regular day.
- 36:53Speaker 1: Yeah, I'm really excited about Inside Tragger partnership because I
- 36:57Speaker 1: feel like I'm going to learn so much that I'm
- 36:59Speaker 1: doing because I know I'm doing most of the stuff wrong.
- 37:02Speaker 1: I don't. I mean, I'm not a calorie counter. I'm
- 37:04Speaker 1: not a person who has a rigid diet. Like we
- 37:06Speaker 1: put stuff, we try to put stuff in the fridge
- 37:08Speaker 1: that's healthy, and then you get up and you're like,
- 37:10Speaker 1: these are my options, and they're all healthy, and it's
- 37:12Speaker 1: you know, it's whole foods and not bags in boxes.
- 37:15Speaker 1: But honestly, the bags in the boxes are just so easy,
- 37:19Speaker 1: you know. So in the morning, it's like toast and
- 37:22Speaker 1: some coffee and maybe a banana or something like that,
- 37:24Speaker 1: and then I graze throughout the day. I've always said
- 37:28Speaker 1: my favorite meal is ingredients. It's just like I just
- 37:33Speaker 1: like eat the ingredients, like I can't put them all together.
- 37:35Speaker 1: That takes too long. So that's kind of what I
- 37:37Speaker 1: do throughout the day. But I think you start, like
- 37:40Speaker 1: when you really break it down, you're like, I eat bread, cheese, chicken,
- 37:44Speaker 1: some lettuce, tomatoes, a salsa.
- 37:47Speaker 3: Uh, that's it, you know.
- 37:49Speaker 1: And then you get to evening and you're like, let's
- 37:51Speaker 1: have some sort of red meat.
- 37:54Speaker 3: And there we go.
- 37:55Speaker 1: Yeah, that's the day in the life of Desi's diet.
- 37:59Speaker 3: That and Blaze donut.
- 38:00Speaker 1: Yeah, those are rare. You know, I'm not going to
- 38:03Speaker 1: earn them. But usually like you're running a ton and
- 38:05Speaker 1: you're like, man, I don't know why I'm craving donuts. Like, well,
- 38:08Speaker 1: I know why you're craving donuts cause you run one
- 38:10Speaker 1: hundred twenty miles this week.
- 38:11Speaker 3: Yeah that's yeah, that's nothing to shy away from.
- 38:14Speaker 2: So for you then on the road so much, I'm
- 38:18Speaker 2: in Boston for a week, how long are you in
- 38:20Speaker 2: town for?
- 38:20Speaker 1: By a week?
- 38:21Speaker 2: Okay, Yeah, that's really when I would say.
- 38:25Speaker 3: A lot of people here are like nodding their heads.
- 38:27Speaker 2: They're like, that's really when trying to stay smart about
- 38:30Speaker 2: your diet, especially for you leading up to a big effort,
- 38:34Speaker 2: can be a little bit difficult. So how do you
- 38:36Speaker 2: navigate being on the road when it comes to trying
- 38:39Speaker 2: to put good things into your body? Yeah?
- 38:41Speaker 1: I wish I could say I'm a planner. I think
- 38:44Speaker 1: for this is again terrible. The biggest mistake that I
- 38:48Speaker 1: think a lot of elites make is not getting enough.
- 38:51Speaker 1: It's not like you're getting enough of the right things.
- 38:55Speaker 1: It's like if you're not getting enough at all, and
- 38:56Speaker 1: so I would rather eat the wrong thing and just
- 38:59Speaker 1: grab it and be like, hey, I know, I traveled
- 39:01Speaker 1: all day and my flight was delayed. I'm at the airport.
- 39:03Speaker 1: I'm getting the sandwich in the bag of the chips
- 39:05Speaker 1: because I need something and these aren't that bad, and
- 39:09Speaker 1: I'm hungry, and the chips sound really good and they're
- 39:11Speaker 1: better than not enough calories for the day. So that
- 39:14Speaker 1: to me is kind of the thing on the road
- 39:16Speaker 1: is like, yes, plan ahead if you can, like have
- 39:19Speaker 1: a game plan where you want to go, what are
- 39:22Speaker 1: you thinking you're going to try and eat? But if
- 39:24Speaker 1: all of it falls apart, you can't. You have to
- 39:26Speaker 1: be flexible too and go, you know what, I just
- 39:28Speaker 1: need something and I have to grab what's available, and
- 39:32Speaker 1: that looks good.
- 39:33Speaker 2: Right, And I feel as though sometimes that's just choosing
- 39:36Speaker 2: the lesser evil, so to speak. Right, Like, if in
- 39:39Speaker 2: your head you know what the options are, if you
- 39:41Speaker 2: can try to make smarter choices on the move, then.
- 39:45Speaker 3: That's the best thing that you can do.
- 39:46Speaker 1: Absolutely.
- 39:47Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 39:47Speaker 2: When it comes to planning, another thing to plan to
- 39:51Speaker 2: the best of your ability is trying to think about
- 39:54Speaker 2: or visualize how you're going to feel during an effort. Now,
- 39:58Speaker 2: when it comes to visual let's bring it specifically to
- 40:02Speaker 2: the Boston Marathon. We reference your ninth time running this race.
- 40:06Speaker 2: You've had so many different finishes here. When you think
- 40:09Speaker 2: about what success looks like for des Linden, do you
- 40:13Speaker 2: think about twenty eighteen, do you think about the sprint
- 40:16Speaker 2: from twenty eleven?
- 40:17Speaker 3: Where does your mind go?
- 40:19Speaker 1: It's definitely shifted. You know, for so many years it
- 40:22Speaker 1: was picturing twenty eleven and getting that kick right. You know,
- 40:27Speaker 1: it's just fixing two seconds of the race. But this
- 40:30Speaker 1: year it's knowing where I'm at and running there to
- 40:35Speaker 1: the best of my ability. Not trying to compete where
- 40:38Speaker 1: I want to be, but run where I'm at and
- 40:41Speaker 1: maximize that fitness. And I think that is going to
- 40:45Speaker 1: allow me to surprise some people, because there will be
- 40:47Speaker 1: people that go, no, I'm going to do whatever the
- 40:50Speaker 1: front does and it's not even in their wheelhouse, Like
- 40:53Speaker 1: I can't be that person, but I can beat a
- 40:56Speaker 1: lot of those people.
- 40:57Speaker 2: Now that the times are so far asked right for marathoning,
- 41:04Speaker 2: If you go out in a race and you're not
- 41:07Speaker 2: in quote unquote the right pace, I use right and
- 41:11Speaker 2: lose air modes, but you're not in that right pace.
- 41:15Speaker 2: What do you do to maybe get out of that
- 41:19Speaker 2: self comparison mode and meet yourself where you're at?
- 41:24Speaker 1: I mean, I hope I have an answer for that
- 41:26Speaker 1: on Monday.
- 41:27Speaker 3: I hope I don't go.
- 41:29Speaker 1: Yeah, I mean, the front's gonna be insane on Monday,
- 41:32Speaker 1: so I just like, really very practically, I think that
- 41:35Speaker 1: they're going to go so fast and I'm gonna have
- 41:36Speaker 1: to make that decision. But I mean, again, it's just
- 41:39Speaker 1: being very present and practical, like what am I ready for?
- 41:43Speaker 1: It's the whole you versus you or me versus me,
- 41:46Speaker 1: Like I'm only battling myself out here. These things that
- 41:49Speaker 1: I can pick up along the way are really just
- 41:51Speaker 1: like carrots that help me draw more out of myself.
- 41:54Speaker 1: Thank you, competitors for helping me get the best out
- 41:56Speaker 1: of myself. And I mean that's all I can do
- 41:59Speaker 1: out there.
- 41:59Speaker 3: I love that.
- 42:00Speaker 2: And to go back to that twenty eleven race for
- 42:04Speaker 2: just a moment, obviously a really tough hurdle moment for you.
- 42:07Speaker 2: I mean I cannot even father what that must have
- 42:10Speaker 2: felt like in that moment picking yourself up from that.
- 42:15Speaker 3: I think a lot of us.
- 42:16Speaker 2: Can learn a lot about perhaps what you've learned in retrospect,
- 42:22Speaker 2: and maybe even if you could tell us a little
- 42:23Speaker 2: bit about what happened and maybe now reflecting on that
- 42:26Speaker 2: hurdle moment, what you have taken from it.
- 42:30Speaker 1: Yeah. I think what was interesting was the rest of
- 42:33Speaker 1: the world was like, this was amazing, like such a
- 42:36Speaker 1: breakthrough race, And for me, I visualized winning that race
- 42:41Speaker 1: so many times. You know, when I saw Caroline Kalell
- 42:46Speaker 1: break the tape, that was the first time I hadn't
- 42:48Speaker 1: been the Boston Marathon champion in like six months, and
- 42:51Speaker 1: I'm like, oh, I'm not gonna win today, like so
- 42:55Speaker 1: that it was really it was heartbreaking for me. And
- 42:59Speaker 1: the good thing about it was that was such it
- 43:02Speaker 1: was still a breakthrough, and I had to remind myself
- 43:04Speaker 1: of that, like you were here and you believed you
- 43:08Speaker 1: were here, but you still have to get it on
- 43:10Speaker 1: the page. So you validated, you know, that training and
- 43:13Speaker 1: it you know, it was a huge step forward for you,
- 43:16Speaker 1: So celebrate that and then mentally knowing that I could
- 43:21Speaker 1: compete with the best in the world, just that self
- 43:24Speaker 1: belief was warranted and should remain and that was something
- 43:29Speaker 1: that was going to be super valuable for going forward.
- 43:32Speaker 1: So I think for me, it's like, allow yourself to
- 43:35Speaker 1: be devastated for forty eight hours, and that's totally fine,
- 43:38Speaker 1: and sometimes it leaks in a little bit longer, but
- 43:41Speaker 1: then you just have to take all the lessons away
- 43:43Speaker 1: from it, the good things. And we tend to learn
- 43:45Speaker 1: the most from our failures and our shortcomings, and it's like, oh, yeah,
- 43:50Speaker 1: that's where the lessons are if you pay attention instead
- 43:52Speaker 1: of just be disappointed and upset. So forty eight hours,
- 43:55Speaker 1: and then.
- 43:56Speaker 2: I also feel like it's kind of what you said
- 43:59Speaker 2: about run in your own race, like you have to
- 44:02Speaker 2: process your own grief in your own way. That's not
- 44:05Speaker 2: to say that I would encourage someone to linger in
- 44:08Speaker 2: the malaise of a disappointment for months and months on end,
- 44:12Speaker 2: but yes, it's great advice that does is saying, like
- 44:15Speaker 2: take forty eight hours, but if you need a week,
- 44:17Speaker 2: take the week, like do what you need to do
- 44:19Speaker 2: to process so that you can move forward and learn
- 44:22Speaker 2: those lessons and properly like move forward, because if you
- 44:27Speaker 2: just like fast forward instead of like thinking about how
- 44:31Speaker 2: that made you feel, then.
- 44:32Speaker 3: You'll regret that in the long term.
- 44:34Speaker 1: That's true.
- 44:34Speaker 3: I'm sure a therapist would be like, come on this.
- 44:37Speaker 1: My sister is a therapist. So these are things I
- 44:40Speaker 1: hear all the time.
- 44:42Speaker 2: Okay, So what excites does right now outside of what's
- 44:47Speaker 2: going on here in Boston?
- 44:48Speaker 3: Like, where are you at? What's amping? What are you
- 44:50Speaker 3: amped about?
- 44:52Speaker 1: The new Brooks role, which we've talked about is. I mean,
- 44:55Speaker 1: that's like top of the list for me. I'm super
- 44:57Speaker 1: pumped about that. I do have a vac coming up,
- 45:00Speaker 1: so that's exciting.
- 45:01Speaker 3: Where are we going Italy?
- 45:03Speaker 1: So ten days in Italy? That'll be fun. But I'm
- 45:08Speaker 1: I finished the last three weeks of this segment more
- 45:12Speaker 1: optimistic than I've been in probably well a year. I mean,
- 45:16Speaker 1: I thought the fifty k was great. I felt really good.
- 45:18Speaker 1: I was very excited about getting back into into races,
- 45:21Speaker 1: and then had this kind of injury thing that I've
- 45:25Speaker 1: been dealing with. So the last couple of weeks of
- 45:27Speaker 1: this segment, I feel like I'm moving like myself again.
- 45:31Speaker 1: And so I don't know if it'll show on Monday,
- 45:35Speaker 1: I don't really care because I'm optimistic that it will
- 45:39Speaker 1: show again. So I'm excited about.
- 45:42Speaker 3: That, excited about that.
- 45:44Speaker 2: And if you when you think about Monday and you
- 45:48Speaker 2: visualize Monday, how.
- 45:51Speaker 3: Would you describe that you hope to feel?
- 45:54Speaker 1: What's funny you're asking the question. I was like, I
- 45:56Speaker 1: hope I'm suffering all day, Like I want to put
- 45:59Speaker 1: myself into the hurt locker and I want to stay
- 46:01Speaker 1: there as long as I can, and just like I
- 46:06Speaker 1: want to be dust when I cross the line. I
- 46:09Speaker 1: don't care what place I am, where I finish. You know,
- 46:12Speaker 1: you just want to know that you left it all
- 46:14Speaker 1: on the course.
- 46:15Speaker 2: I'm looking for words like valiant, triumphant. Des is like miserable.
- 46:20Speaker 1: Let's go look, we all know what we signed up for,
- 46:23Speaker 1: right Like is going to get hard, and that's what
- 46:26Speaker 1: we wanted. And we have that moment where we go
- 46:28Speaker 1: do we keep pushing or do we back off because
- 46:30Speaker 1: I can make this easier. I don't want to be
- 46:33Speaker 1: that person. I want to make it hard as.
- 46:34Speaker 3: Hell, hard as hell? We love that, we love that.
- 46:40Speaker 2: We talked about identity a lot today and a word
- 46:44Speaker 2: that can go hand in hand with identity is legacy.
- 46:49Speaker 2: When you think about the legacy that Des Lindon is
- 46:53Speaker 2: leaving as an athlete, don't come to me with dog
- 46:56Speaker 2: lover test.
- 46:59Speaker 3: As an athlete, what do you think about? What comes
- 47:02Speaker 3: to mind?
- 47:04Speaker 1: I'm laughing because I just despise the word legacy. I
- 47:09Speaker 1: think legacy is like what do you want other people
- 47:13Speaker 1: to think about you? And I don't know if you
- 47:16Speaker 1: know this, Emily, but I don't give a chance. I
- 47:22Speaker 1: just I don't. I'm not I'm not doing things to
- 47:25Speaker 1: like be remembered or you know, any of those things.
- 47:28Speaker 1: I'm just doing them because I'm authentically curious and interested
- 47:32Speaker 1: in you know, I think if people want to dig
- 47:35Speaker 1: into that topic and pick something for me, that's fine.
- 47:41Speaker 3: Your choice, dog lover, Yeah, perfect.
- 47:47Speaker 2: Well, I'm so grateful that we had the opportunity to
- 47:50Speaker 2: do this again. I know that personally, this episode's coming
- 47:54Speaker 2: to the Hurdle Feed on Monday, so as it happens,
- 47:57Speaker 2: it'll be kind of a wild card of we're listening
- 48:00Speaker 2: to versus what they're seeing live and in the days
- 48:03Speaker 2: after that, if you could tell me what your best
- 48:08Speaker 2: race on Monday looks like?
- 48:09Speaker 3: What's your best race on Monday? Look like?
- 48:12Speaker 1: I'm competing all day and I'm absolutely fried when I
- 48:17Speaker 1: cross the line. You know, you go, when did you
- 48:21Speaker 1: what would you change about your race? And I say
- 48:23Speaker 1: absolutely nothing. Would I like to be faster, yes, but
- 48:28Speaker 1: this was absol my best. This is it?
- 48:30Speaker 3: All right?
- 48:30Speaker 2: So the word you use there was fried. To finish
- 48:34Speaker 2: us off here, I want to ask you a two
- 48:37Speaker 2: part question. The first part of this question, you right
- 48:41Speaker 2: now can choose one word that sits with you for
- 48:45Speaker 2: the rest of twenty twenty two. I'll give you a
- 48:49Speaker 2: second to think about that, and I'll share my word
- 48:51Speaker 2: with you. My word for the rest of twenty twenty
- 48:53Speaker 2: two is bigger. I want to think bigger. I want
- 48:57Speaker 2: to make bigger goals. I probably want to step in
- 49:00Speaker 2: to maybe some of the hard work that I've laid
- 49:03Speaker 2: down and just like show up in a bigger way.
- 49:06Speaker 3: When you think about what your word is, what is it?
- 49:11Speaker 1: I love your word. That's great, thank you. Mine's not
- 49:14Speaker 1: going to be as fun. But nails And I'm not
- 49:18Speaker 1: talking about fingernails. I'm talking about you hammer away and
- 49:23Speaker 1: you put them in the wood, those nails, because I
- 49:26Speaker 1: just want to be tough as nails every day, and
- 49:28Speaker 1: I think that that you know is going to be
- 49:30Speaker 1: on the course. I want to be fried at the end.
- 49:33Speaker 1: I want to get out on days where I don't
- 49:36Speaker 1: want to just because you know what, I'm going to
- 49:38Speaker 1: be tough as nails to. I know that everything's saying
- 49:41Speaker 1: stay home or don't, but I want to make the
- 49:44Speaker 1: tough decision. And sometimes what people forget is that it's
- 49:49Speaker 1: not just about being like like tough, hard, but sometimes
- 49:53Speaker 1: making the tough decision is knowing when to back off
- 49:55Speaker 1: and relax. And that's hard too. So I want to
- 49:58Speaker 1: do hard things and I just like circle that is
- 50:00Speaker 1: like nails nails.
- 50:03Speaker 2: It's January first, twenty twenty three. You have gone balls
- 50:08Speaker 2: to the wall with nails. Yeah, okay, what is something
- 50:14Speaker 2: that's happened in your idyllic twenty twenty two? That is
- 50:18Speaker 2: an example of that. This is all hypothetically. I know
- 50:22Speaker 2: you're on the same page, of course, going to win something.
- 50:26Speaker 1: I mean, I think that I see improvement in different
- 50:30Speaker 1: aspects of my life. But obviously this is so running centric,
- 50:33Speaker 1: Like if I can make a step forward from where
- 50:35Speaker 1: I'm at on Monday and in the fall have a
- 50:39Speaker 1: better performance, then that's the success. And you know, I
- 50:41Speaker 1: want to take that tenacity and energy to cra and
- 50:47Speaker 1: all the different things that I'm involved in that some
- 50:49Speaker 1: of them I can't.
- 50:50Speaker 2: Talk about under embargo for now exactly well it does.
- 50:54Speaker 2: I'm so grateful for you. I think that the room
- 50:57Speaker 2: here can say the same. We will all be cheering
- 50:59Speaker 2: you on, not just on Monday, but as you step
- 51:02Speaker 2: into nailing away at the rest of the year and
- 51:05Speaker 2: whatever else is to come. So you know how it
