- 0:10Speaker 1: This is the Patriots Catch twenty two podcasts with Evan
- 0:13Speaker 1: Lazar and Alex Barth Blazarre and Lazar O.
- 0:17Speaker 2: Everybody nailed it. Joined has always by our bar gap.
- 0:24Speaker 1: Here is Evan Lazar and Alex bars.
- 0:26Speaker 2: I'll keep saying it to deep man coverage.
- 0:29Speaker 1: When you throw.
- 0:29Speaker 2: Slants, you throw crossing routes, you throw digs, you throw
- 0:32Speaker 2: stuff into the middle of the field. So if you're
- 0:35Speaker 2: not willing to throw those routes and you're only gonna
- 0:38Speaker 2: throw outs and corners and verticals and stuff like that,
- 0:42Speaker 2: that's into the leverage of the man coverage defender, So
- 0:45Speaker 2: you're throwing it right into the defense. I have a
- 0:47Speaker 2: little bit more faith in Baker Mayfield too. Layer throws
- 0:50Speaker 2: into the middle of the field if they're open, because
- 0:52Speaker 2: he's a more experience and a better quarterback than Michael Pennock.
- 0:56Speaker 2: But it's still not an offense that really lives in
- 0:59Speaker 2: the middle of the field. Not totally wrong, They're not
- 1:04Speaker 2: totally wrong. I'll take it. Not totally wrong. I thought
- 1:07Speaker 2: that that's kind of how this game played out in
- 1:10Speaker 2: a lot of ways. Defensively. We're going to talk about
- 1:12Speaker 2: it over the next couple of hours. Here on Patriots
- 1:15Speaker 2: Catch twenty three. Evan Lazar, Alex Barth Alex behind the Glass.
- 1:19Speaker 2: I do want to say before we really get rolling here.
- 1:22Speaker 2: I know he's in there, behind there somewhere. Happy Belated
- 1:25Speaker 2: Veterans Day to all the troops, all those who served,
- 1:29Speaker 2: all those who are serving right now. To Marine, thank
- 1:32Speaker 2: you for your service. And Happy Veterans Day. Belated to
- 1:37Speaker 2: all you guys, and especially to our veteran over there
- 1:41Speaker 2: behind the glass and Marine, one of our favorites. So
- 1:44Speaker 2: Happy Veterans Day, Marine, hoorah. I hope you're feeling a
- 1:49Speaker 2: little bit more yourself today. I know a little hungover
- 1:52Speaker 2: yesterday for the Marine, which is totally fair. But anyways,
- 1:57Speaker 2: getting into football, I I'm not superstitious, Alex, but I'm
- 2:03Speaker 2: a little stiti and so I'm not going to come
- 2:07Speaker 2: on here today and start talking for just talking about
- 2:10Speaker 2: this just off the air a little bit. I'm not
- 2:12Speaker 2: going to come on here today and start talking about
- 2:15Speaker 2: Super Bowls and contenders and all this kind of stuff.
- 2:19Speaker 2: I'm not going to do that because I'm a little stitious.
- 2:23Speaker 2: All Right. The Patriots are rolling. They look like they're
- 2:27Speaker 2: a team to be reckoned with in the AFC Drake
- 2:30Speaker 2: may looks like an MVP caliber quarterback. I'm excited. I
- 2:35Speaker 2: am in I'm drinking the kool aid. But I'm not
- 2:41Speaker 2: going to go as far to say that I'm not
- 2:44Speaker 2: making any plans because I'm planning to be in Santa
- 2:47Speaker 2: Clara during Super Bowl Week. I'm not going there yet,
- 2:50Speaker 2: but it's really exciting to see what they're doing. And
- 2:54Speaker 2: I think the number one thing just from a big picture,
- 2:57Speaker 2: because we usually start big picture and then we'll go
- 2:59Speaker 2: a little pitic sure starting big picture, the number one
- 3:02Speaker 2: thing to me is just this vibe that is around
- 3:06Speaker 2: this team right now. This is the most what's the
- 3:11Speaker 2: word like? The vibe around this team right now is
- 3:13Speaker 2: the best I've ever seen.
- 3:14Speaker 1: Vibes are It's the best.
- 3:16Speaker 2: I've ever seen since we started covering the team in eighteen.
- 3:19Speaker 2: So we covered the team when they were winning. I
- 3:21Speaker 2: know a lot of people think, well, they're winning, Dug right,
- 3:24Speaker 2: the vibes are great. Twenty eighteen, we covered a Super
- 3:28Speaker 2: Bowl winning team and the vibes were not like this.
- 3:31Speaker 2: Twenty nineteen, they were eight nine to oh to begin
- 3:34Speaker 2: that season, and the vibes are not like this. Twenty
- 3:36Speaker 2: twenty one They also won seven games in a row
- 3:40Speaker 2: with Mac Jones at quarterback in his rookie year. And
- 3:43Speaker 2: the vibes are not this good. I give a ton
- 3:45Speaker 2: of credit to Mike Rabel. I give a ton of
- 3:48Speaker 2: credit to the leadership and the captains and the leadership
- 3:51Speaker 2: committee on this team. They are bought in, They are focused.
- 3:56Speaker 2: They enjoy and celebrate each other's success. It doesn't matter
- 4:01Speaker 2: if they're catching one pass or they're catching ten. It
- 4:05Speaker 2: doesn't matter if they're the one getting the sack or
- 4:09Speaker 2: they're helping another guy get a sack or whatever you
- 4:12Speaker 2: want to call it. They are. They're playing for each
- 4:16Speaker 2: other right now. And the vibes are immaculate. And I
- 4:19Speaker 2: think that that's a testament to all the things that
- 4:22Speaker 2: I mentioned with Raybel and this whole thing. And I'm
- 4:26Speaker 2: not a big vibes guy, like that's not my thing usually, Nope,
- 4:30Speaker 2: But listening to some of the stories that are starting
- 4:33Speaker 2: to come out yesterday at the press conferences, you know,
- 4:37Speaker 2: players wanting to attend meetings like meetings for football is
- 4:42Speaker 2: a lot like school was as a kid.
- 4:45Speaker 1: Meetings for football are a lot like meetings.
- 4:47Speaker 2: Further, no, it's different. It's not like more like school,
- 4:50Speaker 2: because like he stands up at the front of the
- 4:52Speaker 2: room and is like lecturing them on things like when
- 4:55Speaker 2: they do squad meetings, like it's literally in the auditorium
- 4:59Speaker 2: that we are in.
- 5:00Speaker 1: You've never been in a work meeting and it's somebody
- 5:02Speaker 1: like explaining no, no, all right. We have different meetings.
- 5:07Speaker 2: I think work meetings are more collaborative, like where like
- 5:10Speaker 2: sometimes a lot of people talk.
- 5:12Speaker 1: I've been in work meetings where it's like one or
- 5:13Speaker 1: two people.
- 5:14Speaker 2: This is like, this is their auditorium is literally like
- 5:17Speaker 2: a college lecture hall, and they and he stands up
- 5:20Speaker 2: there and he said to us yesterday and when I
- 5:23Speaker 2: say he, I mean Mike Rabel. Mike Rabel said that
- 5:26Speaker 2: he wanted to cut a Thursday meeting short by twenty
- 5:29Speaker 2: five minutes to give everybody twenty five more minutes of
- 5:32Speaker 2: sleep before they had to be here at the facility,
- 5:35Speaker 2: and the veterans and the leaders on the team said, no, thanks,
- 5:38Speaker 2: we want the meeting. He then said that Drake May
- 5:41Speaker 2: said yesterday it was freezing here in Foxborough's in the
- 5:46Speaker 2: thirties yesterday. Winter is here, folks, And he said that
- 5:51Speaker 2: Drake May said that Mike Rabel offered to move practice
- 5:56Speaker 2: inside because it was so cold, and the players said, no,
- 6:00Speaker 2: we need to get used to playing in the elements.
- 6:03Speaker 2: We want to be outside and practice outside. Like those
- 6:06Speaker 2: little types of things are what you start to hear
- 6:08Speaker 2: when things are are going in a really good direction.
- 6:13Speaker 2: And it's the best vibes I've been around since I
- 6:15Speaker 2: started covering this team.
- 6:17Speaker 1: It a'st that in a spreadsheet you just have just
- 6:21Speaker 1: I know, I was debating whether or not just say,
- 6:23Speaker 1: look going back to January when we were talking about
- 6:29Speaker 1: the coach, and that's the kind that that thing does matter.
- 6:33Speaker 1: I know some people like to think it doesn't matter.
- 6:35Speaker 2: It matters.
- 6:36Speaker 1: Yes, you also need to know what you're doing on
- 6:38Speaker 1: the football field and put together a game plan and
- 6:41Speaker 1: make adjustments and all that. But there's a lot of
- 6:45Speaker 1: coaches that are good football minds. It's the ones that
- 6:47Speaker 1: are also leaders of men that can make a big difference.
- 6:50Speaker 1: And and that's not just Rabel, that's the entire staff
- 6:54Speaker 1: and the veteran leadership on this team. That stuff matters.
- 6:58Speaker 1: That stuff makes a difference if you ultimately want to
- 7:00Speaker 1: get to the top, not towards the top, to the
- 7:02Speaker 1: top and I'm not saying they're gonna get there this year,
- 7:04Speaker 1: just off that. You can't have a bunch of feel
- 7:05Speaker 1: good you know, if you're not playing well either, you
- 7:08Speaker 1: got to play well at all. One thing feeds into
- 7:10Speaker 1: the other. But it's this is why me and I
- 7:15Speaker 1: think a lot of other people were so staunchly in
- 7:17Speaker 1: favor of them hiring Mike Rabel this offseason as both
- 7:20Speaker 1: some of the other options, not just it, you know,
- 7:22Speaker 1: and he's done a good job when you look at
- 7:24Speaker 1: what they did with the roster construction all that. Obviously
- 7:26Speaker 1: they crushed that, but he's all somebody that can build
- 7:31Speaker 1: a football team and can create a culture, because you
- 7:33Speaker 1: know what happens when you start ingraining that sort of
- 7:37Speaker 1: sense or responsibility and that sort of sense and team,
- 7:40Speaker 1: it becomes sustainable. And even if it's not, you know,
- 7:42Speaker 1: you're gonna make roster moves year over year, but you
- 7:45Speaker 1: have that core, you have that leadership that this franchise
- 7:47Speaker 1: has lacked for the last four to five years. That's
- 7:50Speaker 1: going to pass that torch on and on and on,
- 7:53Speaker 1: and now that becomes the level and that becomes the expectation,
- 7:56Speaker 1: and you need that because it's not always going to
- 7:58Speaker 1: be easy, and you need people who are and want
- 8:00Speaker 1: to fight through it. So this is why Mike Rabel
- 8:03Speaker 1: is the guy. This is I mean, he's part of
- 8:05Speaker 1: the reason I shouldn't say sorry. This is part of
- 8:06Speaker 1: the reason Mike Grabel is the guy because he can
- 8:09Speaker 1: establish this and I think it's important.
- 8:12Speaker 2: Might just be there here, It might it might just
- 8:14Speaker 2: have that kind of juju. And I give him. I
- 8:18Speaker 2: give him credit because that's like you're kind of laying
- 8:20Speaker 2: out like that's self created. That doesn't just come at it.
- 8:23Speaker 1: It's not easy. Not everybody can just walk into an
- 8:26Speaker 1: NFL locker room and it's the NFL. It's not college
- 8:29Speaker 1: where they're kids and they're all looking up to you.
- 8:31Speaker 1: These are you know, guys that have been professionals for
- 8:34Speaker 1: a long time, make a lot of money. It's not
- 8:36Speaker 1: easy to walk into that locker room and command respect
- 8:38Speaker 1: like that and set the tone like that, especially this quickly.
- 8:41Speaker 2: Because he's in alpha he is an alpha male. Mike
- 8:44Speaker 2: Rabel is an alpha male personality.
- 8:46Speaker 1: And he he can back it up like.
- 8:49Speaker 2: I mean, he's freaking huge. Of course he can back.
- 8:51Speaker 1: Well, it's not just that he's huge, Oh no, it's
- 8:53Speaker 1: part of it, it's part of it. But I think
- 8:54Speaker 1: there's an element of I don't know how much you
- 8:56Speaker 1: want to get into, like leadership philosophy. I think any
- 8:59Speaker 1: good leader, right, if you're gonna lead whatever, if you're
- 9:02Speaker 1: a leader at work, if you're a leader in your
- 9:04Speaker 1: foot whatever, Right, a good leader doesn't ask people to
- 9:08Speaker 1: do things that that he or she would not do.
- 9:11Speaker 2: And I don't think about that because like Bill Belichick
- 9:15Speaker 2: never played professional football, but Bill Belichick, this is a
- 9:19Speaker 2: great was a great leader.
- 9:21Speaker 1: Yeah, no, he but but I mean that at a
- 9:24Speaker 1: macro like Bill Belichick's obviously not going to go in
- 9:26Speaker 1: there during practice and set the edge on an outside zone.
- 9:29Speaker 1: But you know, hey, we want you guys to come
- 9:32Speaker 1: in here an hour early. We want like, we want
- 9:34Speaker 1: you guys to you know, we're gonna be out in
- 9:36Speaker 1: the cold, We're gonna do this, We're gonna, you know,
- 9:38Speaker 1: run extra today. He's out there running with the team.
- 9:40Speaker 1: He's in here before everybody else like that sort of thing.
- 9:42Speaker 1: Like he's not He's set in the tone from the front,
- 9:47Speaker 1: not from the back. That's what I'm saying.
- 9:48Speaker 2: Yeah, he absolutely is.
- 9:50Speaker 1: And you know when he talks about being selfless, I
- 9:53Speaker 1: think he's done a lot of things in this that
- 9:55Speaker 1: have been selfless and and he's you know that's being
- 9:58Speaker 1: passed forward.
- 9:59Speaker 2: Yeah, I mean it's look, it's all of it is true.
- 10:02Speaker 2: All of the flowers that they're getting, all of the
- 10:06Speaker 2: flowers that Mike Rabel is getting, are all warranted because
- 10:10Speaker 2: we were covering this team over the last two to
- 10:13Speaker 2: three years, and we were in some not so great
- 10:16Speaker 2: locker rooms, like you know, guys that obviously we're losing,
- 10:19Speaker 2: and you know things that we were not good about
- 10:23Speaker 2: the culture around here. And Mike Rabel and really, what
- 10:28Speaker 2: ten months on the job, not even a full year
- 10:30Speaker 2: yet on the job, has done a complete one eight
- 10:34Speaker 2: on that. Now. I want to get into the football
- 10:36Speaker 2: because that's the most important part. But the football element
- 10:39Speaker 2: of it, let's start with the quarterback.
- 10:43Speaker 1: Well, I do are we going to Tampa now? Or
- 10:45Speaker 1: is this still big picture? I don't know, combination okay,
- 10:49Speaker 1: because we I the other thing about like how you
- 10:52Speaker 1: know how much longer is Mike Rabel's first year gonna last?
- 10:54Speaker 1: That sort of thing. I know, if you want to
- 10:56Speaker 1: get into that take, I don't know what you mean,
- 10:58Speaker 1: like the playoff take and where they're at and are
- 11:00Speaker 1: they because like, look, I said this on some shows
- 11:03Speaker 1: last week. Yeah, like if they beat Tampa, it goes
- 11:06Speaker 1: from you know, oh, they're gonna make the playoffs. That's cool.
- 11:09Speaker 1: They had this turnaround to like, no, like you gotta
- 11:11Speaker 1: take them seriously now in the AFC picture, Well, oh.
- 11:14Speaker 2: You mean like in terms of like talking about the
- 11:17Speaker 2: other teams in the conference and where Yeah, well no,
- 11:20Speaker 2: I don't know. I mean it's we're week ten.
- 11:23Speaker 1: Well, just to pick up on what we were talking
- 11:26Speaker 1: about before, I made that sound more dramatic than I
- 11:28Speaker 1: probably needed to. But like, I think part of this too,
- 11:33Speaker 1: you know, because they beat that Bucks team, that Bucks
- 11:35Speaker 1: seem is the real deal. I know they were a
- 11:37Speaker 1: little banged up. The Patriots are banged up too, Like
- 11:38Speaker 1: that that Bucks team's the real deal. And I think
- 11:43Speaker 1: part of it too is if they can beat a
- 11:45Speaker 1: team like Tampa, and some of the feeds into the
- 11:47Speaker 1: culture thing too, because I think there's an element of
- 11:50Speaker 1: seeing the results like, Okay, this is why we put
- 11:52Speaker 1: all that hard work in Tampa's if you're gonna make
- 11:57Speaker 1: noise in the playoffs, Tampa's the kind of team you're
- 11:59Speaker 1: gonna need a beat. And they went on the road
- 12:01Speaker 1: and they did it. And you know, I look at
- 12:03Speaker 1: it now, Evan, how many teams are there in the
- 12:07Speaker 1: AFC that you can definitively say any any team any time, well,
- 12:12Speaker 1: that's the team, but anytime any place, they're going to
- 12:16Speaker 1: beat the Patriots.
- 12:17Speaker 2: I wouldn't say that. I I think that any team,
- 12:21Speaker 2: I hear what you're getting.
- 12:22Speaker 1: At now, there's some I would like say that. I'm
- 12:24Speaker 1: not saying the Patriots are definitively better than some of
- 12:26Speaker 1: these teams either, but it's you know, I maybe maybe
- 12:31Speaker 1: if they really started, was.
- 12:32Speaker 2: Not ready to have this conversation.
- 12:34Speaker 1: No, I think this is the week you have it,
- 12:35Speaker 1: because they beat a really good team in Tampa.
- 12:37Speaker 2: I guess I just it's we're still it's not even
- 12:40Speaker 2: Thanksgiving yet, like and on top of that, I just
- 12:44Speaker 2: when I look at the AFC landscape, I would say,
- 12:46Speaker 2: but I only fear about this, if we're going to
- 12:49Speaker 2: go here, is that Kansas City, Buffalo, and Baltimore are
- 12:53Speaker 2: probably going to be your three wild card teams in
- 12:56Speaker 2: this picture, which means that even if you get.
- 13:00Speaker 1: I don't know about that one of them, one of
- 13:01Speaker 1: them is probably gonna get left out. The Chargers got
- 13:03Speaker 1: off to such a hard, hot start.
- 13:06Speaker 2: But the Okay, I mean, I guess you know three
- 13:09Speaker 2: NFC AFC.
- 13:10Speaker 1: I think you're gonna get three, two or three unless
- 13:14Speaker 1: right now the Chiefs are out.
- 13:15Speaker 2: Yeah, But like they're the Chiefs will figure it out.
- 13:18Speaker 2: Like the chief the Chiefs are are.
- 13:19Speaker 1: Not gonna But if the Chiefs, Chargers, and Denver all
- 13:22Speaker 1: make it and one of them is obviously the division winner, right,
- 13:24Speaker 1: that leaves one of the bills of the Ravens out.
- 13:27Speaker 2: Why you have the Colts in the South, you have
- 13:31Speaker 2: the Patriots in the East, you have whoever wins the
- 13:33Speaker 2: Steelers probably right, and then you have the Broncos.
- 13:39Speaker 1: So you're gonna have your three wildcard teams, right, Yeah,
- 13:42Speaker 1: somebody has to win the West. If the Chiefs and
- 13:45Speaker 1: Chargers both make it, that's two wild cards. If the
- 13:48Speaker 1: Chiefs and Chargers, that's what I'm saying. If the Chiefs are.
- 13:51Speaker 2: I'm not convinced that that's gonna happen.
- 13:54Speaker 1: You think the Chargers starting seven and three aren't gonna
- 13:56Speaker 1: make it.
- 13:57Speaker 2: They might not. They're falling apart, their injuries are all.
- 14:00Speaker 1: That would be a pretty wild slide. They gotta basically win.
- 14:04Speaker 2: You're right, I don't know, I'm not. This conversation is
- 14:07Speaker 2: like premature to.
- 14:08Speaker 1: The point being like, I think coming away from this game,
- 14:10Speaker 1: like that's the kind of team the Patriots who need
- 14:13Speaker 1: to beat in the playoffs. And sure you go from
- 14:16Speaker 1: all right, they won four games the last two years
- 14:19Speaker 1: and now they're going to make the playoffs. That's great
- 14:20Speaker 1: improvement to Like, I think the level of expectation steps
- 14:23Speaker 1: up a little bit. And it's not to say super Bowl,
- 14:27Speaker 1: but like it twenty twenty one, and yeah, there were
- 14:32Speaker 1: some bigger issues at play there, but twenty twenty one,
- 14:34Speaker 1: we all kind of felt like, oh sick, they're in
- 14:36Speaker 1: the playoffs and we knew they were gonna go up
- 14:37Speaker 1: to the Buffalo and get thumped. Maybe not that badly, right,
- 14:41Speaker 1: and they were also their entire starting defense at COVID.
- 14:43Speaker 1: But like, I don't think this is that. I think
- 14:46Speaker 1: we are now a step beyond oh fun, They're gonna
- 14:49Speaker 1: make the playoffs, and it's like and and then what happens?
- 14:53Speaker 1: Kind does that make sense? Yeah?
- 14:54Speaker 2: No, I hear what you're saying.
- 14:56Speaker 1: I just a wow. Charge schedule is stuff like that's
- 15:00Speaker 1: the way.
- 15:00Speaker 2: I mean, they just still have seven games left and
- 15:02Speaker 2: they're gonna win this game tomorrow night, so they're gonna
- 15:04Speaker 2: be nine and two. Yeah, but it just we'll get
- 15:07Speaker 2: to those permutations and who do you want and.
- 15:10Speaker 1: We'll do that the byway. Yeah, we'll do that when
- 15:13Speaker 1: time comes really quickly. Everybody's got it.
- 15:16Speaker 2: You know, I'm excited too.
- 15:18Speaker 1: Because you talking about Dard's take.
- 15:20Speaker 2: No, I'm just saying, like everybody is excited too, and
- 15:23Speaker 2: I get it, like their super Bowl h that the
- 15:26Speaker 2: super Bowl is not a crazy outland just take anymore
- 15:30Speaker 2: right to say that they could go on a run
- 15:32Speaker 2: here because they won seven straight games, like obviously, but
- 15:35Speaker 2: like right now, you know, let's just let's just enjoy
- 15:39Speaker 2: the ride. Let's enjoy the ride once we get to January,
- 15:43Speaker 2: and you know, once they are are really solidifying where
- 15:47Speaker 2: they're gonna be at and we can talk about playoff
- 15:49Speaker 2: matchups and who would you rather face and all that
- 15:52Speaker 2: good stuff.
- 15:53Speaker 1: Well, but I do think there's an element of, like,
- 15:55Speaker 1: this is what we get to do again. We did
- 15:57Speaker 1: this for twenty years. Patriots played Thursday night Sundays off.
- 16:00Speaker 1: By the way, great great Sunday for your team not
- 16:04Speaker 1: to be playing this this schedule, this is the most
- 16:06Speaker 1: excited I've been about an NFL slate in a while,
- 16:10Speaker 1: Like Broncos Chiefs, What which outcomes better for the Patriots?
- 16:14Speaker 1: You know there there could be some debate there you
- 16:16Speaker 1: want you won't stop. We did this, Why can't we
- 16:19Speaker 1: do this.
- 16:19Speaker 2: Because it's it's week eleven.
- 16:22Speaker 1: Like the Patriots have to keep winning. Nobody saying the
- 16:24Speaker 1: Patriots don't have to.
- 16:25Speaker 2: But it's not even just about that. It's just like
- 16:27Speaker 2: I like, I don't know what's going to happen with
- 16:29Speaker 2: the rest of these teams, Like I don't know.
- 16:31Speaker 1: Well, that's what I'm saying.
- 16:32Speaker 2: So you get you how if the playoffs started today,
- 16:34Speaker 2: the Chiefs wouldn't be in. Do you really think the
- 16:37Speaker 2: Chiefs are going to miss the playoffs?
- 16:38Speaker 1: No, let's say this is it's it's Look, I'm just
- 16:41Speaker 1: so glad we don't have to do this watching the
- 16:43Speaker 1: Titans and the Jets and hoping they win for I
- 16:47Speaker 1: understand to do the flip side by the way Chargers
- 16:49Speaker 1: the rest of their schedule. You might be honest on now,
- 16:51Speaker 1: I know there's seven and three, just I don't need
- 16:53Speaker 1: this Jaguars, I'm not actually in the playoffs. Chargers catch Jaguars.
- 16:58Speaker 1: I'm giving you credit for being right.
- 17:00Speaker 2: Oars.
- 17:00Speaker 1: Currently the playoffs, then the bye, then the Raiders, who suck? Eagles, Chiefs, Cowboys, Texans, Broncos.
- 17:06Speaker 1: That's tough. Yeah, that's tough.
- 17:09Speaker 2: All right? Can we can we talk about real football
- 17:12Speaker 2: now and not talk about playoff seating in November twelfth?
- 17:17Speaker 2: Are we good?
- 17:19Speaker 1: It's going to be part of the conversation around this
- 17:21Speaker 1: team now. It's just like, you know, and it's annoying, like,
- 17:24Speaker 1: can we just again we have fun looking at It's.
- 17:27Speaker 2: What I'm saying. That's not what I'm saying. Let's just
- 17:33Speaker 2: let's just play the schedule out and let's see what happens.
- 17:37Speaker 2: Like trying to sit here and say who would you
- 17:39Speaker 2: rather play in the playoffs?
- 17:40Speaker 1: That's not what I'm saying.
- 17:41Speaker 2: That's not what i'm saying. I don't know yet. I'm
- 17:43Speaker 2: just saying because all these teams could change, like you know,
- 17:46Speaker 2: any one of these teams could.
- 17:50Speaker 1: Nobody's denying that. I'm saying, it's it's fun to watch
- 17:53Speaker 1: that with the Patriots being in the mix and they're
- 17:56Speaker 1: being stakes in these other games about the Patriots that
- 17:58Speaker 1: don't have to evolve draft position.
- 18:00Speaker 2: Absolutely have you seen.
- 18:00Speaker 1: The schedule this week on Sunday? It's awesome.
- 18:05Speaker 2: I know I did not look at this.
- 18:07Speaker 1: It's it's Bill's box.
- 18:09Speaker 2: Good game.
- 18:10Speaker 1: Yeah, Vikings Bears could be a good game. Can we
- 18:13Speaker 1: talk about Jacks? Two playoff teams? Hang on, Holme's done,
- 18:17Speaker 1: rams Seahawks. Huge game. Doesn't matter for the Patriots, but
- 18:19Speaker 1: huge game. They're both seven to two. That rules Broncos, Chiefs.
- 18:23Speaker 1: Gonna find out which one of those teams is for
- 18:24Speaker 1: real and Line's Eagles on Sunday night. That's a good slate.
- 18:28Speaker 1: All right, all right, I'm done.
- 18:30Speaker 2: Let's talk about Let's talk about the games that have
- 18:33Speaker 2: been played or they're going to play in the near future.
- 18:36Speaker 2: All right, all right, let's do that. Let's talk about
- 18:39Speaker 2: this Bucks game a little bit. But I want to
- 18:41Speaker 2: do the good, the bad, and the stuff that gets
- 18:43Speaker 2: you beat in real for real this week. I feel
- 18:46Speaker 2: like some weeks we do it kind of half hazardly.
- 18:49Speaker 2: Sometimes it kind of goes off the rails a little bit.
- 18:51Speaker 2: I'm gonna try to stick to the to the script here.
- 18:54Speaker 2: I want to start with Drake May and start with
- 18:56Speaker 2: the quarterback. I just there are three or four plays
- 19:02Speaker 2: I wouldn't even call them just throws. I would call
- 19:04Speaker 2: them plays a game that Drake May makes that make
- 19:08Speaker 2: your jaw drop, that are just unbelievable, high level of
- 19:12Speaker 2: difficulty plays. And it's every single week, like he does
- 19:17Speaker 2: it every week. Yeah, and it's unbelievable to watch. It's
- 19:21Speaker 2: so much fun to watch. And I'm not trying to say,
- 19:25Speaker 2: I'm not trying to make these comparisons, but I do
- 19:29Speaker 2: feel like it's a different style at least in what
- 19:33Speaker 2: we saw with Tom Brady. Tom Brady was a efficient machine,
- 19:38Speaker 2: like he was a consistent, efficient, smart, accurate, you know,
- 19:47Speaker 2: a competitive clutch performer like that was what Brady was.
- 19:53Speaker 2: Drake May is a he is a heavyweight that stands
- 19:58Speaker 2: in the middle of the ring and just throws haymakers
- 20:00Speaker 2: like that's what he is. And he might not be
- 20:03Speaker 2: play to play. You know, he's not going to be
- 20:05Speaker 2: quite as consistent as Brady was. He's going to have,
- 20:08Speaker 2: you know, like early on in this game, he had
- 20:10Speaker 2: a couple of sprays in the rain early on. He's
- 20:13Speaker 2: going to have some interceptions that in turnovers that you
- 20:16Speaker 2: don't love, like late in this game. But those three
- 20:19Speaker 2: to four throws man like that is freaking unbelievable. And
- 20:24Speaker 2: the seventy two yard er to Kyle Williams is one
- 20:28Speaker 2: of the best throws that I've seen him make, and
- 20:30Speaker 2: I know that when you look at it, it's like
- 20:33Speaker 2: a seventeen yard throw in the air, but it really
- 20:36Speaker 2: doesn't do it justice just putting it in terms of
- 20:39Speaker 2: like how far down the field it was, or the
- 20:41Speaker 2: situation of the game or anything like that. When you
- 20:45Speaker 2: watch that throw from the end zone angle and you
- 20:47Speaker 2: watch how he's pointed towards the middle of the field
- 20:50Speaker 2: where MATC Collins is and at the last second kind
- 20:53Speaker 2: of decides, all right, the safety is coming down to
- 20:56Speaker 2: jump MATC. Collins' route. So the one on ones actually
- 20:59Speaker 2: to Kyle Williams on the backside crosser and he throws
- 21:03Speaker 2: with his momentum in his throwing hallway pointed at MATC.
- 21:06Speaker 2: Collins and he throws looking left. He throws right, and
- 21:11Speaker 2: like breaks like all sorts of rules of quarterback mechanics,
- 21:15Speaker 2: takes a huge hit in the pocket and could not
- 21:18Speaker 2: have thrown the ball better, like just an absolutely perfectly
- 21:22Speaker 2: placed pass. You know you have that one.
- 21:24Speaker 1: You know, that throw reminded me of a little bit
- 21:26Speaker 1: and I've said this on a couple other shows. Twenty
- 21:29Speaker 1: sixteen Bradi of Malcolm Mitchell in San Francis a little
- 21:32Speaker 1: bit like the way he kind of perfectly gets it
- 21:34Speaker 1: over the defender's shoulder in a way that not only
- 21:37Speaker 1: clears the defender but also perfectly sets the receiver up
- 21:41Speaker 1: to run after the catch. The angle like the angle
- 21:43Speaker 1: that throws, because that Malcolm Mitchell thro alway stood out
- 21:45Speaker 1: to me. It's like the angle's weird. You watch it,
- 21:47Speaker 1: it's not entirely clear, like the first time you watch it, like, wait,
- 21:50Speaker 1: what how did he get that in there? Where's he going?
- 21:52Speaker 1: How did he run away? And then you see it
- 21:53Speaker 1: from that end zone angle and it explains a lot.
- 21:56Speaker 1: It reminded me of that throw.
- 21:58Speaker 2: Uh the obviously the bomb to Hollands, you fifty six
- 22:02Speaker 2: yards in the air in terms of air distance on
- 22:04Speaker 2: that throw, just an unbelievable throw. I've said this a
- 22:08Speaker 2: couple of times, Like Zion McCollum, I don't think that
- 22:11Speaker 2: he had horrible coverage on the play. I don't think
- 22:14Speaker 2: there was no chance. He thought there was no chance
- 22:16Speaker 2: that ball was going over his head. Like and if
- 22:18Speaker 2: you're a cornerback in the NFL. You know, you're he's
- 22:21Speaker 2: in his pedal, like he's backpedaling, back pedaling. He's looking
- 22:24Speaker 2: up at the ball and he's like this thing is
- 22:25Speaker 2: still going, like how far? Like he runs like thirty
- 22:30Speaker 2: yards back in a dead sprint with Mac Collins, and
- 22:34Speaker 2: the ball just kept going. And at some point, you know,
- 22:37Speaker 2: as a corner like you're gonna end up not being
- 22:40Speaker 2: able to drop fast enough. And he basically, Drake May
- 22:44Speaker 2: his ability to just outthrow the coverage is a rare trade.
- 22:49Speaker 2: Like that type of arm strength is is big rare,
- 22:52Speaker 2: Like you don't see that in the league very often,
- 22:55Speaker 2: that you just flat out outthrow NFL coverage like that
- 22:59Speaker 2: doesn't necessarily happened very often. The other throws, you know,
- 23:03Speaker 2: obviously the fifteen yard of the Hollins, I don't think
- 23:07Speaker 2: that you really draw it up to have the quarterback
- 23:09Speaker 2: holding the ball above his head with two hands on it,
- 23:13Speaker 2: trying to, you know, rip through a tackler that's trying
- 23:16Speaker 2: to sack him in the backfield. I think it was
- 23:17Speaker 2: Vita Vea, but he did it. He does it every
- 23:21Speaker 2: single week, staring down the blitz and throwing to pob
- 23:25Speaker 2: Douglas on that twenty six yard play was one of
- 23:27Speaker 2: my favorite plays of the game, just because of the
- 23:29Speaker 2: way it unfolded with the blitz coming right through the
- 23:31Speaker 2: middle of the field. Levante David just comes right through
- 23:36Speaker 2: center and he's just staring it down and just makes
- 23:39Speaker 2: a throw on time in rhythm onto our target. Probably
- 23:43Speaker 2: should have been a touchdown. Bob Douglas got tripped up
- 23:46Speaker 2: by the dropping end, which you know, I thought was
- 23:49Speaker 2: you know, really could have been a touchdown. And then
- 23:52Speaker 2: the fourth down throw to Digs on the touchdown, I mean,
- 23:55Speaker 2: that's a that's a hard throw to make, that's not
- 23:57Speaker 2: a high percentage that Yeah, all of these things, you know,
- 24:01Speaker 2: you just see consistently with Drake May every single week
- 24:06Speaker 2: is incredible quarterback play. And I understand that he has
- 24:11Speaker 2: there are some and we'll get to him, like there
- 24:13Speaker 2: are some things in this game that he did that
- 24:15Speaker 2: was not so good, especially the interception, But they don't
- 24:19Speaker 2: win these games without these big time plays that Drake
- 24:24Speaker 2: May is making. And that to me, if you want
- 24:29Speaker 2: to talk about future and you want to talk about this,
- 24:33Speaker 2: I think, to me, the argument right now for Drake
- 24:36Speaker 2: May being the NFL as MVP is that he's doing
- 24:41Speaker 2: these things on a weekly basis where you can encapsulate
- 24:46Speaker 2: him putting the team on his back. And he's doing
- 24:49Speaker 2: it throwing no offense, but not throwing to Jackson Smith
- 24:53Speaker 2: and Jigba or Puka Nakua or behind running behind that
- 24:58Speaker 2: Colts offensive line. He's doing this with what most people
- 25:02Speaker 2: coming into this season thought was what a middling supporting cast.
- 25:07Speaker 1: Yeah, I mean, I think with Diggs, I don't think
- 25:12Speaker 1: people gave gave the cast enough credit coming into the season.
- 25:15Speaker 1: I will say that, like, and I understand people are
- 25:18Speaker 1: maybe worry about where Diggs was at thirty one years
- 25:20Speaker 1: old coming off the torn ACL Diggs being the guy
- 25:23Speaker 1: he has changes a lot. It's not taking anything away
- 25:25Speaker 1: from Drake, but Diggs being the guy he has really
- 25:27Speaker 1: changes the way that.
- 25:29Speaker 2: Sure, but he's not That's not Jaya center Pukani.
- 25:32Speaker 1: Yeah, all right, fair enough.
- 25:33Speaker 2: Yeah, those guys are on a different level. And that's
- 25:35Speaker 2: not a knock on Stefan Diggs. It's just where Diggs
- 25:38Speaker 2: is in his career right now to you know where
- 25:42Speaker 2: those guys are in their primes. It's just different. It's
- 25:45Speaker 2: just different. So Drake may just continues to just be outstanding.
- 25:52Speaker 2: I feel like, and you know I thought in this
- 25:54Speaker 2: game too, and you know, this might be a little
- 25:56Speaker 2: bit towards you know, the bad side of things, but
- 26:00Speaker 2: Todd Bowles, I thought, showed an ultimate sign of respect
- 26:05Speaker 2: for Drake May. You know, I'm really big on like
- 26:07Speaker 2: how do they defend the Patriots and how are teams
- 26:10Speaker 2: defending Drake May and looking at trends in terms of
- 26:14Speaker 2: coverage and pass rush and things like that. So Drake
- 26:17Speaker 2: May comes out in this game and Todd Bowles blitzes
- 26:20Speaker 2: him a couple times in the first half, and he
- 26:22Speaker 2: just rips him apart. You know, twelve yards per pass
- 26:26Speaker 2: attempt against the blitz huge plays, you know, when the
- 26:30Speaker 2: Bucks bringing pressure and so Bowles, who is a notorious blitzer.
- 26:36Speaker 2: You know, we talked all last week about the pressure
- 26:38Speaker 2: that the Bucks like to bring. Thirty five percent blitz rate.
- 26:41Speaker 2: They were only twenty seven percent blitz rate in this game,
- 26:44Speaker 2: so way below their seven season average. And they used
- 26:48Speaker 2: a lot of drop eight coverage in this game, where
- 26:50Speaker 2: they're dropping out seven guys and then a quarterback spy,
- 26:55Speaker 2: so they're really only rushing three pass rushers on the play.
- 27:00Speaker 2: For Todd Bowles to say, I am, You're too good
- 27:03Speaker 2: for me to blitz you, and so we have to
- 27:06Speaker 2: go Basically, that's like a fastball pitcher saying that I
- 27:10Speaker 2: need to throw only off speed stuff to this guy.
- 27:13Speaker 2: That's what that is. So he changed up. He threw
- 27:17Speaker 2: changeups at Drake May. Now they were pretty successful with it,
- 27:20Speaker 2: Tampa was, and that might be something that we can
- 27:23Speaker 2: talk about moving forward if teams trying to copy that formula,
- 27:26Speaker 2: but just to kind of spin it in a positive way.
- 27:29Speaker 2: I look at it and say, even Todd Bowles said,
- 27:32Speaker 2: we can't blitz this guy. And if Todd Bowles is
- 27:35Speaker 2: saying that and Todd Bowles is kind of changing his
- 27:38Speaker 2: stripes to game plan Drake May, that just tells you
- 27:42Speaker 2: about kind of the ascension that he has made. Because
- 27:45Speaker 2: you only do that against the great quarterbacks. No one's
- 27:48Speaker 2: like coming into a game against Dylan Gabriel and saying like, oh,
- 27:52Speaker 2: we can't blitz Dylan Gabriel, right, Like, we got to
- 27:55Speaker 2: do something different. So the fact that Todd Bowles did
- 27:57Speaker 2: something different in this game is just a real testament
- 28:01Speaker 2: to how far Drake May has come. Like that tells
- 28:03Speaker 2: me that he is being viewed by other coaching staffs
- 28:07Speaker 2: as an elite quarterback in the league right now.
- 28:09Speaker 1: Yeah. I mean we talk about the loot sometimes with
- 28:11Speaker 1: the Patriots spending other quarterbacks, that you take a team
- 28:13Speaker 1: out of their comfort zone, you force them to operate
- 28:15Speaker 1: the way they don't want to operate, and that in
- 28:16Speaker 1: itself is an advantage regardless of what they're doing. So
- 28:19Speaker 1: and I think he's earned it. I think he's absolutely
- 28:22Speaker 1: earned that.
- 28:23Speaker 2: Yep. The other thing that I wanted to talk about
- 28:25Speaker 2: here still kind of big picture, is still kind of
- 28:28Speaker 2: the goods here. I kind of see the method, you know,
- 28:33Speaker 2: moving over to the defense, I kind of see the
- 28:36Speaker 2: method of the madness here with the defense a little bit.
- 28:39Speaker 2: I get it. I wrote about this and after further
- 28:41Speaker 2: re you watching their early down soft zones give up
- 28:45Speaker 2: ten yard outs and have it to look kind of
- 28:48Speaker 2: not competitive at times is frustrating, Like it looks too easy,
- 28:52Speaker 2: Like you want them to get up on the receivers.
- 28:55Speaker 2: You want them to take away that space and not
- 28:58Speaker 2: give up those yards underneath the coverage and all that
- 29:00Speaker 2: good stuff, because it just looks like easy money. And
- 29:05Speaker 2: I do have a tiny bit of fear that a
- 29:08Speaker 2: great quarterback maybe in the playoffs or something like that,
- 29:11Speaker 2: Herbert and Allen, you know, a Mahomes Well, just on
- 29:16Speaker 2: first and second down, they're not even gonna get to
- 29:18Speaker 2: third down because they're gonna just go right through them
- 29:21Speaker 2: on first and second down. But they're starting to limit
- 29:26Speaker 2: big plays. Over the last five weeks, they're seventh in
- 29:29Speaker 2: the league and you know, seventh best and big play
- 29:34Speaker 2: pass rate allowed. Yeah, they are fifth on third down,
- 29:38Speaker 2: and they're really good run defense. So when you start
- 29:41Speaker 2: to add those things up, you know, when you're not
- 29:44Speaker 2: giving up chunks, you're good on third down, you stop
- 29:48Speaker 2: the run. Like now, all of a sudden, you start
- 29:50Speaker 2: to see a formula there of how they're keeping teams
- 29:54Speaker 2: down in terms of scoring as well. You know, top
- 29:57Speaker 2: ten scoring defense too. So is it then don't break eat? Yeah? Absolutely,
- 30:02Speaker 2: Like there's definitely that element to it. Is it too
- 30:06Speaker 2: easy at times on early downs? Yeah, they're twenty fifth
- 30:09Speaker 2: in the league right now in pass EPA on early downs.
- 30:12Speaker 2: It's not great, but they're starting to kind of have
- 30:16Speaker 2: that formula and it's sort of like first and second down,
- 30:19Speaker 2: we're gonna you know, we're gonna back off, we're gonna
- 30:21Speaker 2: protect the house. Third down, let's party like, that's when
- 30:25Speaker 2: we're gonna draw up pressure. That's when we're gonna play
- 30:28Speaker 2: man coverage. We're gonna put Gonzo on their best receiver
- 30:32Speaker 2: and we're gonna play man to man and we're gonna
- 30:34Speaker 2: we're gonna come after you. So they've done a nice job,
- 30:36Speaker 2: and I think Vrabel and Zach Korrer have done a
- 30:38Speaker 2: nice job of like sticking to their guns on that
- 30:41Speaker 2: and not getting super aggressive on first and second down
- 30:45Speaker 2: and being impatient with it. So that's that's hard to do,
- 30:49Speaker 2: like when you're giving up, you know, little plays here
- 30:52Speaker 2: and there on first and second down all game long.
- 30:54Speaker 2: To kind of stick to your formula and not all
- 30:57Speaker 2: of a sudden start to get aggressive and get beat
- 30:59Speaker 2: over the time is hard to do. But they're doing
- 31:01Speaker 2: it right now. So I hear it like a lot
- 31:05Speaker 2: of the frustrations with the defense because I think I'm
- 31:08Speaker 2: sure you get it and your mentions every game too.
- 31:11Speaker 2: Whereas the man coverage, why are they playing so far
- 31:13Speaker 2: off the line of scrimmage? I think that there is
- 31:16Speaker 2: starting to be on both on film and in terms
- 31:20Speaker 2: of the numbers, they're starting to You're starting to see
- 31:22Speaker 2: it come to fruition. What exactly the vision of the
- 31:26Speaker 2: style of defenses that they're playing. Yeah.
- 31:28Speaker 1: The interesting factor to me in that is, and you
- 31:32Speaker 1: mentioned like against a better quarterback, is a better quarterback
- 31:35Speaker 1: going to take advantage. Baker's a pretty good quarterback. And
- 31:38Speaker 1: they kept that offense right relatively in check. I mean
- 31:40Speaker 1: that last drive they're just trying to make sure guys
- 31:43Speaker 1: are tackling bounds in the clocks running right.
- 31:46Speaker 2: We'll get to that last drive.
- 31:47Speaker 1: I thought, well, they played they played Josh Allen differently.
- 31:51Speaker 1: They played Josh Allen like like you just described third down.
- 31:54Speaker 1: They kind of played that way the entire game. So
- 31:56Speaker 1: maybe there is another game plan in there that we
- 31:59Speaker 1: just haven't a see because they've played Dylan Gabriel and
- 32:01Speaker 1: they you know, they've played some of these lesser quarterbacks
- 32:06Speaker 1: that they can go the other way if they need to,
- 32:08Speaker 1: but they're just not doing it when they don't need
- 32:09Speaker 1: to do it.
- 32:10Speaker 2: Yeah, And I you know, I again, I just think
- 32:15Speaker 2: that there's a clear formula nowt They got to be
- 32:18Speaker 2: better in certain areas, and we'll get to that. But
- 32:20Speaker 2: I just think you can see a method here to
- 32:23Speaker 2: the madness of what some of these coverages that they're
- 32:27Speaker 2: playing on early downs, but there are they're playing about
- 32:29Speaker 2: seventy five percent zone coverage on first and second down.
- 32:32Speaker 2: They're giving up a lot of yards on first and
- 32:34Speaker 2: second down. But then you look up in the fourth
- 32:37Speaker 2: quarter and the point has seventeen points, right, And if
- 32:41Speaker 2: you do that consistently week in and week out, where
- 32:45Speaker 2: you know, like I said, limit big plays, good on
- 32:49Speaker 2: third down, stop the run. And then you put that
- 32:52Speaker 2: and combine that with having Drake frickin' May on the
- 32:55Speaker 2: other side, you're gonna win a lot of football games.
- 32:58Speaker 2: Like that's gonna be a formula that's gonna lead to
- 33:00Speaker 2: a lot of wins. The other goods here Travon Henderson
- 33:04Speaker 2: and Kyle Williams just basically breaking their GPS trackers and
- 33:08Speaker 2: their pads was cool to see. So, you know, fifty
- 33:12Speaker 2: five yard touchdown, twenty two miles an hour on that
- 33:15Speaker 2: play for Travon Henderson, twenty one point seven to eight
- 33:19Speaker 2: for Kyle Williams on his touchdown, Another twenty one plus
- 33:23Speaker 2: miles per hour play by Henderson on the sixty nine
- 33:25Speaker 2: yard touchdown that the three fastest times in the NFL
- 33:30Speaker 2: by a ball carrier this week all New England Patriots.
- 33:33Speaker 1: Can't really remember the last time I could know it
- 33:35Speaker 1: seem as real speed. I can't really remember the last
- 33:37Speaker 1: time I said that two rookie skill players had games
- 33:41Speaker 1: like this as New England Patriots. So seeing both those
- 33:45Speaker 1: guys break out in the same game was pretty cool
- 33:48Speaker 1: to watch. Yeah, And I think it's an encapsulation of
- 33:51Speaker 1: what they are. Like, I don't think Kyle Williams is
- 33:54Speaker 1: not a guy who's gonna have six seven catches in
- 33:56Speaker 1: a game and be a volume guy and you're going
- 33:59Speaker 1: a pump the ball him, Like that's not his role.
- 34:01Speaker 1: He's gonna be a guy that one to three catches
- 34:04Speaker 1: a game. But is it three catches for thirty yards
- 34:07Speaker 1: or is it three catches for ninety yards? Like that's
- 34:09Speaker 1: where you're looking at him to make an impact. He
- 34:11Speaker 1: only made one catch, but he made a massive impact.
- 34:13Speaker 1: Terrell Jennings the same thing. We've talked a lot about
- 34:15Speaker 1: this Dreel Jennings is not a volume player. Now, he
- 34:17Speaker 1: kind of had to be in this game because of injuries.
- 34:19Speaker 1: And some people have pointed to the game as a
- 34:23Speaker 1: whole and like, okay, well, outside of those two runs,
- 34:26Speaker 1: it's really three runs. He almost broke that other one.
- 34:28Speaker 1: But you know, outside of those three runs, he didn't
- 34:30Speaker 1: do much and there was one stretch there. I think
- 34:32Speaker 1: between the two long runs he had five carries for
- 34:34Speaker 1: zero total yards. But that's not He's not supposed to
- 34:38Speaker 1: be a bell cow. That's supposed to be Ramondrae, Stevensoner
- 34:41Speaker 1: Terrell Jennings because those guys are going to do better
- 34:43Speaker 1: picking up some of those dirty, you know, hidden yards,
- 34:46Speaker 1: and then when those guys body below the defense enough,
- 34:48Speaker 1: then Trevon Henderson comes in and breaks one or two
- 34:51Speaker 1: big runs. So it's not just both guys succeeded. You
- 34:53Speaker 1: saw them succeed in the rape mostly in the role again,
- 34:56Speaker 1: Hendersons was a little different kause the injuries, but you
- 34:58Speaker 1: saw them succeed basically in the role that I think
- 35:00Speaker 1: expect him to be in this year.
- 35:01Speaker 2: Yeah, yeah, I agree with that. You know, Henderson or
- 35:05Speaker 2: excuse me, like Henderson had the two big runs, but
- 35:07Speaker 2: Williams basically that was his only target in the game.
- 35:10Speaker 2: Only catching the game was the seventy two yard touchdown,
- 35:13Speaker 2: and that's exactly what you're looking at for him. I
- 35:15Speaker 2: thought the combination of him and Matt Collins replacing Kyshawn
- 35:19Speaker 2: Boody couldn't vast for any more than that that, you know,
- 35:21Speaker 2: Matt Collins had six for one oh six and GeV
- 35:24Speaker 2: one for seventy two. Great production out of both those guys.
- 35:28Speaker 2: I it was a great day for the Patriots personnel department,
- 35:32Speaker 2: you know, their draft class last year. And I want
- 35:35Speaker 2: to get a little bit to Craig Woodson too, but
- 35:38Speaker 2: Campbell and Wilson both starting on the offensive line, both
- 35:42Speaker 2: skill players on Day two, have big games. Craig Woodson
- 35:45Speaker 2: has a big game. Andy Borgalis just continues to be automatic. Yeah,
- 35:50Speaker 2: Elijah Ponder on Tristan Wharf's first career sack. A good
- 35:54Speaker 2: day for the front office. Obviously, speed was a big
- 35:57Speaker 2: part of what they wanted to add this offseason, and
- 36:00Speaker 2: back came to fruition in a big game in a
- 36:03Speaker 2: big spot on the road. So I'm sure all those
- 36:05Speaker 2: guys are feeling pretty good about all that as well.
- 36:09Speaker 2: And speaking of the front office, another one that stands
- 36:12Speaker 2: out that we have to talk about, especially on this
- 36:15Speaker 2: show like this is right up our alley is Kiris Tonga.
- 36:20Speaker 2: Mister two way, well really three way and a special teams,
- 36:25Speaker 2: three way, three phase, just star role player at this point,
- 36:31Speaker 2: I don't even know if I want to put role
- 36:32Speaker 2: player on it. He's just been dynamite, dynamite defensive tackle. Honestly,
- 36:38Speaker 2: one of the better. We were talking about this yesterday
- 36:40Speaker 2: in the locker room with Taylor Kyle's and the gang,
- 36:44Speaker 2: Like is he one of the better converted defensive players
- 36:48Speaker 2: to offensive players that are in terms of full backs
- 36:51Speaker 2: or lead blockers. He's one of the better ones that
- 36:54Speaker 2: I have seen do it. You know, I have to
- 36:57Speaker 2: go back a little wit. You know. We talked to
- 36:58Speaker 2: Landon Roberts, to Richard Seymour. Mike Rabel obviously was more
- 37:03Speaker 2: of a tight end than like a full back, but
- 37:05Speaker 2: of course Mike Rabel at times, Dan Cleco, I know,
- 37:10Speaker 2: we argued about Dan.
- 37:11Speaker 1: Yeah, I don't know why you think Dan Klecko was
- 37:13Speaker 1: like naturally a fullback. It's very weird.
- 37:14Speaker 2: I don't think he was naturally a fullback. I just
- 37:16Speaker 2: don't think he was like a full time player on
- 37:18Speaker 2: defense that turned the offense. That's what Kiris Tongka is doing.
- 37:21Speaker 2: Kyris Tonga has a full time role on defense and
- 37:25Speaker 2: is then moonlighting on offense. I think Dan Klecko was
- 37:28Speaker 2: kind of a guy that bounced back and forth and didn't.
- 37:30Speaker 1: Dan Cleco played defensive line and linebacker at Temple. Yeah,
- 37:36Speaker 1: he was a came here and started playing fullback.
- 37:39Speaker 2: I get that, but he didn't have a he it
- 37:41Speaker 2: doesn't matter. This is something. The point is is that
- 37:44Speaker 2: Kiris Tonga. Now, the short yardage running wasn't great. Yeah
- 37:48Speaker 2: Edelman the other way, yeahs to shortyarded running in this
- 37:53Speaker 2: game wasn't exactly great. But they did have the fourth
- 37:57Speaker 2: down conversion early on in the game with him on
- 37:59Speaker 2: the field, and of course he goes you know, all boys,
- 38:02Speaker 2: I me ends on him on the sixty ninety.
- 38:03Speaker 1: The block he makes on the second one, Yeah, you
- 38:07Speaker 1: mentioned bowling pins like that's that's such an instinctive play
- 38:11Speaker 1: where he steals this guy off at the edge, but
- 38:14Speaker 1: does so kind of giving up his balance and he
- 38:17Speaker 1: knows he's going down, and what does he do. He
- 38:18Speaker 1: kind of spreads himself out and makes himself long and
- 38:21Speaker 1: he ends up taking out like three more defenders with
- 38:23Speaker 1: him as he's following. That's like a highly instinctive kind
- 38:25Speaker 1: of play for a guy that has not had a
- 38:28Speaker 1: ton of experience in that position kind of knew exactly
- 38:30Speaker 1: what to do. That's awesome.
- 38:31Speaker 2: Yeah, it's pretty incredible how naturally instinctive and how quick
- 38:36Speaker 2: he is to process as a blocker for a guy
- 38:39Speaker 2: that hasn't done it a ton. You know, there's a
- 38:40Speaker 2: lot of times where when the offensive line's blocking in
- 38:44Speaker 2: short yardage, usually it's not like a read and react
- 38:48Speaker 2: situation in terms of the front. They usually take gaps right.
- 38:51Speaker 2: So like when you see sometimes you know, especially the tackles,
- 38:56Speaker 2: they'll kind of dive forward into a gap and sometimes
- 38:58Speaker 2: it looks like they're blocking in and it looks kind
- 39:00Speaker 2: of ugly, But in reality, that's just the way that
- 39:03Speaker 2: the play is designed because it's gonna be a bang,
- 39:06Speaker 2: bang car crash, so you're not gonna have time to
- 39:10Speaker 2: get push by like sitting back in your set and
- 39:13Speaker 2: then like reading where the defensive lineman's going like you
- 39:16Speaker 2: would on a normal play. So they just shoot gaps, right,
- 39:20Speaker 2: They just cover gaps. They just block a gap, And
- 39:23Speaker 2: so as a full back or as a lead blocker,
- 39:27Speaker 2: your job is then to process or read like who
- 39:31Speaker 2: do I have to make? Right? So if Will Campbell
- 39:33Speaker 2: takes the outside gap, but the defensive lineman ends up
- 39:37Speaker 2: shooting the inside gap. Then I just got to take
- 39:39Speaker 2: that guy. I gotta take first color Like this play
- 39:42Speaker 2: might be designed for me to get to the second level,
- 39:45Speaker 2: but I have to help the offensive line there. And
- 39:48Speaker 2: his ability to kind of like replace the blocks on
- 39:50Speaker 2: the offensive line is not something that you It is
- 39:55Speaker 2: not something that comes naturally like that's that's a hard skill.
- 39:59Speaker 2: It's like a hard read. And the fact the fact
- 40:02Speaker 2: that he's able to do that so seamlessly is like
- 40:06Speaker 2: a huge testament to him. So he's been great in
- 40:10Speaker 2: this role. He's been great on defense as well. So
- 40:14Speaker 2: what a find Kiris Tonga is there? So another another
- 40:17Speaker 2: win for this personnel department. Just a fantastic signing. The
- 40:22Speaker 2: other fantastic signing that I thought, uh, you know, just
- 40:25Speaker 2: continues to be on a heater in this game. Will too. Actually, uh,
- 40:29Speaker 2: Milton Williams and calevon Chase on and you know I
- 40:33Speaker 2: talked about Milon Williams or talked about earlier, the vibes
- 40:36Speaker 2: and the buying and all that kind of stuff. When
- 40:38Speaker 2: your highest paid defensive player, which is Milton Williams at
- 40:43Speaker 2: the moment, when your highest paid defensive player is Fuld
- 40:48Speaker 2: tilt through the whistle on every single play when he
- 40:51Speaker 2: is a sidelined, a sideline player, when he is a
- 40:53Speaker 2: red hot motor guy. It like sets a tone for
- 40:56Speaker 2: the rest of the defense. The fact that Milton Williams
- 40:59Speaker 2: plays like this every single week, it just shows everybody
- 41:03Speaker 2: else around him, like I've got to do the same.
- 41:05Speaker 2: Like if he's doing it and he's making thirty million
- 41:07Speaker 2: dollars a year, then what's my excuse not to do it?
- 41:10Speaker 2: And I talked to him about this after the game
- 41:12Speaker 2: and he said that that mentality, that motor, that full
- 41:17Speaker 2: tilt to the whistle, that is a non negotiable for
- 41:20Speaker 2: this defense. And he was frank about it and said,
- 41:24Speaker 2: if you're not doing it, we're taking your butt off
- 41:27Speaker 2: the field and we're gonna find somebody that will like
- 41:30Speaker 2: that is that's the way we're playing. And he encapsulates
- 41:33Speaker 2: that completely every single week. He fills up the stap sheet, pressures,
- 41:37Speaker 2: run stuffs, hustle plays. He is an awesome player to watch.
- 41:43Speaker 2: And then Chase on two six quarterback pressures in this
- 41:46Speaker 2: game led the team. I thought he was really good
- 41:49Speaker 2: in this game as well, relentless to on that sack.
- 41:52Speaker 2: Both those guys just continue to be on heaters. They've
- 41:55Speaker 2: both been great for basically all season at this point.
- 41:59Speaker 1: Yeah, it's it's they've made a massive difference. And yeah,
- 42:03Speaker 1: all right.
- 42:04Speaker 2: A couple more defensive things and we'll move over to
- 42:07Speaker 2: the bats. I want to give some kudos to this
- 42:12Speaker 2: safety tandem. I feel like there was a lot of
- 42:15Speaker 2: concerns about Craig Woodson and Jalen Hawkins being the Patriots
- 42:18Speaker 2: starting safeties. Been really good. Greig Woodson, I think has
- 42:21Speaker 2: been really starting to come into his own. I had
- 42:25Speaker 2: him with like four you know, impactful splash plays in
- 42:29Speaker 2: this game. A great pass breakup, you know, coming from
- 42:32Speaker 2: the split safety zone and breaking up that pass to
- 42:34Speaker 2: and on third down. That was a huge play in
- 42:37Speaker 2: this game. It is third and three there and scoring
- 42:40Speaker 2: territory and he separates the you know, along with Gonzo,
- 42:43Speaker 2: they kind of converge on it and gets the ball out.
- 42:46Speaker 2: Had another pass breakup in the flat, and then that
- 42:48Speaker 2: play that Jalen Hawkins made on the fourth down where
- 42:51Speaker 2: Baker somehow got the ball out. I think it's to
- 42:54Speaker 2: Rashad White that was like a miracle, you know, in
- 42:57Speaker 2: the grass kind of flipped by Baker. Mayfe and Jalen
- 43:01Speaker 2: Hawkins is playing post safety in the middle of the field.
- 43:04Speaker 2: He comes from like fifteen twenty yards off the ball
- 43:07Speaker 2: and makes that tackle.
- 43:08Speaker 1: When it looked like the play was over, and I
- 43:09Speaker 1: mean he starts hustling. His other guys are kind of
- 43:11Speaker 1: celebrating yeah, or buck Skis are like, like the body
- 43:14Speaker 1: language of players on both sides was the play was over.
- 43:16Speaker 2: Yeah. So if they if they don't have that play, like,
- 43:22Speaker 2: if he's not there, then obviously like there's nobody else there,
- 43:25Speaker 2: so like that might be a touchdown if Jalen Hawkins
- 43:28Speaker 2: doesn't come up and make that tackle. So for all
- 43:31Speaker 2: there's concerns about depth. You know, if either one of
- 43:33Speaker 2: these guys gets hurt, then they're in a bad spot
- 43:36Speaker 2: at safety. But the concerns coming in about those two
- 43:39Speaker 2: guys being your starting safeties. I don't have a ton
- 43:43Speaker 2: of concerns anymore about those two players. I think they've
- 43:46Speaker 2: been both really solid.
- 43:47Speaker 1: No, and it's it's another spot where they moved on
- 43:50Speaker 1: from veterans somewhat controversially. Obviously Peppers before the season and
- 43:55Speaker 1: then Duger a couple of weeks ago, and I don't know,
- 43:57Speaker 1: I know Hawkins. The first game of the year was
- 44:00Speaker 1: like weird where he had some big plays, but he
- 44:02Speaker 1: also made some big mistakes. And you're just kind of
- 44:05Speaker 1: everywhere good and bad. But how many times have we
- 44:08Speaker 1: sat here, Evan and been like, man, they could have
- 44:09Speaker 1: used Broll Peppers today, and they could have used Kyle Dougerty, Like,
- 44:12Speaker 1: we really haven't done that. Now Again, if guys start
- 44:15Speaker 1: getting hurt, we may have that conversation regards to depth.
- 44:18Speaker 1: But those guys have stepped in and and made the
- 44:24Speaker 1: plays they need to make.
- 44:25Speaker 2: Yeah, absolutely, really quickly in the chat, I'm not on
- 44:29Speaker 2: my phone. This is my rundown is on the is
- 44:32Speaker 2: on my phone, Okay, okay, I am tied to tech sometimes.
- 44:36Speaker 1: Thank you for clarifying. Yeah, I want to show that's
- 44:39Speaker 1: a brave move to point your phone towards the camera.
- 44:41Speaker 2: I mean, it's just it's a Google doc.
- 44:43Speaker 1: What's gonna they never know what? Notification?
- 44:46Speaker 2: What I'm married? Man, What do you think is going
- 44:48Speaker 2: to happen?
- 44:49Speaker 3: I don't know.
- 44:50Speaker 1: People are weird with this stuff.
- 44:53Speaker 2: Anyways, last one, last one on the goods, and then
- 44:56Speaker 2: I do want to talk about some of this other stuff.
- 44:58Speaker 1: Uh.
- 44:59Speaker 2: I split this up into two different ones. Well, he's
- 45:01Speaker 2: on the goods and he's on the bat Yeah, Gonzo
- 45:04Speaker 2: in man coverage, good yesh, he's on the goods. Two
- 45:08Speaker 2: for five in man coverage in terms of you know,
- 45:10Speaker 2: catches to target's only twelve yards allowed. He allowed one
- 45:13Speaker 2: catch for eleven yards to Mecca Buca and man coverage.
- 45:17Speaker 2: Now to be fully transparent, his defensive pass interference was
- 45:21Speaker 2: man coverage. I love the call, but it is what
- 45:24Speaker 2: it is. I think that he's still one of the
- 45:27Speaker 2: best lockdown man cover corners in the league. We can
- 45:30Speaker 2: talk about some of the zone stuff and how the
- 45:32Speaker 2: teams are getting their best receivers away from Gonzo and
- 45:35Speaker 2: how the Patriots need to improve in that regard, but
- 45:39Speaker 2: when he goes Mono Imano against their best receiver, whether
- 45:43Speaker 2: it was Drake London last week or Jerry Judy the
- 45:46Speaker 2: week before, now Agbuca a couple third down coverage, you
- 45:51Speaker 2: know stops or forest in completions as well. I thought
- 45:54Speaker 2: that in man coverage, Gonzo really good.
- 45:57Speaker 1: I feel like Christian and I don't know if you
- 45:59Speaker 1: want to use this to jump to the bad I
- 46:02Speaker 1: don't know if it's Gonzalez goes as the defense goes
- 46:05Speaker 1: or the defense goes as Gonzales goes. However you want
- 46:07Speaker 1: to structure that doesn't feel like he gets beat once?
- 46:10Speaker 1: Whatever the concept? Right, he gets beat once early in
- 46:13Speaker 1: the game, Gonzales sucks, don't better, and then he's just
- 46:17Speaker 1: like lights out the rest of it. And obviously you'd
- 46:20Speaker 1: rather not get beat the first play of the game
- 46:22Speaker 1: or the first time he gets you know, tested. But
- 46:26Speaker 1: is that just me that feels that way that like
- 46:29Speaker 1: I think.
- 46:29Speaker 2: To what it is and you know, let's just segue
- 46:31Speaker 2: to the bads here. Yeah, So when I talk about
- 46:35Speaker 2: the bads in these games, I want to be clear.
- 46:38Speaker 2: I am always looking at like, how could they lose
- 46:43Speaker 2: in the playoffs? Right Like at this point, it's like,
- 46:45Speaker 2: what is going to trip this team up? What's going
- 46:48Speaker 2: to cost his team a you know, a true run
- 46:50Speaker 2: in the playoffs. And I do think there are some
- 46:53Speaker 2: areas as good as they are playing that are starting
- 46:56Speaker 2: to bubble up underneath the surface that they need to
- 47:00Speaker 2: get corrected. And one of them, and it's not just
- 47:04Speaker 2: Christian Zalz He's not the only one. But I understand,
- 47:08Speaker 2: and I said earlier, I understand the method of the
- 47:10Speaker 2: badness in terms of the off coverage stuff. That still
- 47:13Speaker 2: doesn't mean that you need to give like the first
- 47:16Speaker 2: like twelve yards for free. Like you can still be
- 47:18Speaker 2: a little bit tighter on some of these off coverage
- 47:23Speaker 2: zone you know, off man type of reps where at
- 47:28Speaker 2: this point, whether it's a hitch, whether it's a slant,
- 47:31Speaker 2: whether it's a comeback, whether it's a you know, out whatever,
- 47:35Speaker 2: like they're just give They're handing teams ten yard outs,
- 47:38Speaker 2: Like if you want to go down the field on
- 47:40Speaker 2: the Patriots on first down, just throwing like seven ten
- 47:43Speaker 2: yard outs. It's there, man, like they are giving it
- 47:47Speaker 2: to you. And at some point some team with some
- 47:51Speaker 2: good quarterback is going to sit there and say, yeah,
- 47:54Speaker 2: we'll be patient, like we'll just take I'll take this
- 47:57Speaker 2: check down, I'll take this hitch, I'll take this out,
- 48:00Speaker 2: I'll take this you know o route over the ball
- 48:03Speaker 2: in between two zones, like I'll take this all day
- 48:06Speaker 2: long if you're gonna give this to me. So they
- 48:09Speaker 2: have to I think be a little bit more competitive
- 48:12Speaker 2: in those situations, and that I think is also you know,
- 48:16Speaker 2: part of the thing with Gonzo, like he gave up
- 48:19Speaker 2: I said, you know, two catches for twelve yards in
- 48:21Speaker 2: man to man. He gave up three catches for forty
- 48:24Speaker 2: nine yards in zone coverage, right, So the zone stuff
- 48:27Speaker 2: is a little bit murky. They're twenty fifth and early
- 48:29Speaker 2: down pass EPA because of their zone coverage and the
- 48:33Speaker 2: yards they're giving up in their zone coverages. So this
- 48:36Speaker 2: is something that isn't going to get them beat against
- 48:40Speaker 2: some of these lesser quarterbacks or Baker Mayfield without his
- 48:43Speaker 2: two best receivers. It's not going to get them beat
- 48:46Speaker 2: against Michael Pennix. It's not going to get them beat
- 48:48Speaker 2: against Dylan Gabriel, cam Ward Spencer Rattler. Will it get
- 48:53Speaker 2: them beat against Justin Herbert. We'll get them beat against
- 48:56Speaker 2: Josh Allen, will get them beat against Lamar Jackson, Patrick Mahomes.
- 49:01Speaker 2: You know, I don't know if I'm putting Bo Nix
- 49:04Speaker 2: or Daniel Jones in that conversation, but we'll get them
- 49:07Speaker 2: beat against those great quarterbacks that might So I think
- 49:10Speaker 2: some of the things you're kind of getting at are
- 49:12Speaker 2: similar to the things that I have concerns about. They've
- 49:15Speaker 2: got to be a little bit better in their early
- 49:18Speaker 2: down zones, and they got to be a little bit tighter.
- 49:20Speaker 2: I think sometimes on the outside. I get that they
- 49:22Speaker 2: don't want to give up any big plays over their head,
- 49:25Speaker 2: but that doesn't mean that you just give them the
- 49:27Speaker 2: first fifteen yards.
- 49:28Speaker 1: Well, and that's also where I go back to, like,
- 49:31Speaker 1: what are the chances that they play it differently against
- 49:34Speaker 1: those quarterbacks? Like they didn't play this at least not
- 49:37Speaker 1: that regularly. They didn't play this way against Buffalo. Yeah,
- 49:41Speaker 1: and maybe it's just the way they're going to play
- 49:42Speaker 1: against certain quarterbacks.
- 49:44Speaker 2: Sure, other couple of things that just are kind of
- 49:47Speaker 2: starting to get on my radar. It's all most of
- 49:53Speaker 2: this in this part of the list's kind of defense.
- 49:55Speaker 2: To be honest. Run defense last week basically the worst
- 49:59Speaker 2: run defense performance the year across the board, and this
- 50:02Speaker 2: was I know, you know, maybe I'm under selling Tucker
- 50:07Speaker 2: the running back for the Bucks a little bit.
- 50:09Speaker 1: I think he's like I liked him coming down in
- 50:11Speaker 1: the draft and they got good depth. I know he's
- 50:14Speaker 1: their third string running back. I don't think he'd be
- 50:15Speaker 1: the third string everywhere. He's a good playing runs really hard.
- 50:18Speaker 2: So this was their worst run defense performance by EPA
- 50:22Speaker 2: success rate, yards per carry explosive runs. Like all across
- 50:27Speaker 2: the board, they gave up a fifty seven percent success
- 50:31Speaker 2: rate on the ground, which is astronomically high for them
- 50:35Speaker 2: in my opinion. If that is Bijon Robinson or if
- 50:40Speaker 2: that is Breise Hall tomorrow night, you know, Thursday night,
- 50:44Speaker 2: those eighteen yard runs that Tucker was breaking off might
- 50:48Speaker 2: become fifty yard runs against these great backs. So their
- 50:53Speaker 2: run defense has been awesome all year. This could easily
- 50:56Speaker 2: just be a one week blip in the radar here,
- 51:00Speaker 2: but I think it kind of goes hand in hand
- 51:01Speaker 2: with this next one. I have not seen the Christian
- 51:06Speaker 2: Barmore that I'm used to seeing over the last couple
- 51:08Speaker 2: of weeks, So I don't know if that is bumps
- 51:12Speaker 2: and bruises catching up to him. I know he has
- 51:13Speaker 2: this back thing. I don't know if it's that. I
- 51:15Speaker 2: don't know if it's long season, late bye like they
- 51:19Speaker 2: might just need some of these guys, whether it's you know,
- 51:23Speaker 2: bar More, Landry Splane like these, some of these veteran
- 51:27Speaker 2: players might just need the bye week in a bad
- 51:30Speaker 2: way because they're just not especially Landry and Barmore. It's
- 51:35Speaker 2: been two weeks for Barmore, it's really been since that
- 51:39Speaker 2: ankle injury in New Orleans with Landry where I've seen
- 51:42Speaker 2: those guys play to their potential and play to their ceiling.
- 51:46Speaker 1: Yeah, and they've talked about Vrabel's talk out and need
- 51:49Speaker 1: to manage some of those veteran guys. So it's where
- 51:52Speaker 1: the late bye week comes in. They're gonna have the
- 51:53Speaker 1: mini bye this week, you know, and then what is
- 51:56Speaker 1: it two weeks? It's it's this week Cincinnati and then
- 52:00Speaker 1: the Giants and then the bye, right, yes, so, and
- 52:03Speaker 1: even that Giants game will be a longer week because
- 52:05Speaker 1: that's Monday night. So they got some rest coming up,
- 52:10Speaker 1: and it's it's well earned.
- 52:12Speaker 2: So just something that's a little bit on there on
- 52:14Speaker 2: my radar. You know, Barmore and Landry. In this game,
- 52:17Speaker 2: Barmore hasn't logged in. I know he was in and
- 52:19Speaker 2: out of this game because of the injury, but he
- 52:21Speaker 2: hasn't logged the quarterback pressure in two weeks and that's
- 52:24Speaker 2: just not normal. Christian Barmore. Like, I'm watching his film
- 52:28Speaker 2: right now, and I'm like, this guy looks he looks compromised,
- 52:31Speaker 2: like he looks like something is but like health wise
- 52:34Speaker 2: is bothering?
- 52:34Speaker 1: If just they're still doubling them?
- 52:36Speaker 2: Sometimes they are, and I kind of chock that up
- 52:38Speaker 2: to it last week, but now it's two weeks in
- 52:40Speaker 2: a row that he's looked this way, so it's starting
- 52:43Speaker 2: to be on my radar. Last thing on the bags
- 52:46Speaker 2: and then we'll get to the stuff that gets you beat.
- 52:47Speaker 2: Only really one or two things there.
- 52:50Speaker 4: But.
- 52:52Speaker 2: It's driving me the coverage bus in the red zone
- 52:54Speaker 2: or driving me nuts. It's every week. It's like three
- 52:57Speaker 2: or four weeks in a row at this point. You know,
- 53:00Speaker 2: fan in on his touchdown against Atlanta, it wasn't a touchdown,
- 53:04Speaker 2: but they left Beijon Robinson wide open in the flat
- 53:06Speaker 2: that led to a touchdown. And then this week of
- 53:09Speaker 2: course Agbuca's first touchdown or only touchdown, but the first
- 53:13Speaker 2: touchdown on the opening drive just wide open coverage bust.
- 53:16Speaker 2: It's every single week they are busting a coverage in
- 53:20Speaker 2: the high red zone, you know that area between the
- 53:22Speaker 2: fifteen and twenty five yard line, every single week. So
- 53:25Speaker 2: this has got to get cleaned up, like they've got
- 53:27Speaker 2: to figure it out. It looks to me, you know,
- 53:30Speaker 2: watching back this play from Sunday, in terms of the
- 53:34Speaker 2: Igbuka touchdown, it looks like quarters uh and in quarters,
- 53:39Speaker 2: like you're going to match verticals and quarters. So I
- 53:42Speaker 2: think that Marcus Jones needed to carry Igbuka on that route, Like,
- 53:46Speaker 2: I think.
- 53:47Speaker 1: That's what I think he kind of slipped a little bit, right, Well.
- 53:50Speaker 2: What happened was is, you know, so Gonzo is getting
- 53:52Speaker 2: run off on that side of the field by the
- 53:55Speaker 2: outside receiver and it's a little like delayed wheel. It's
- 53:58Speaker 2: a nice route, it's a delayed wheel by Buco where
- 54:00Speaker 2: he kind of just like lulls you to sleep and
- 54:03Speaker 2: then he releases up the field. And I look at
- 54:07Speaker 2: that one and say, you know, I think Marcus Jones
- 54:09Speaker 2: should have carried a Buka on that play, whether or not,
- 54:13Speaker 2: you know, I don't know if it was a muddied
- 54:14Speaker 2: read or or you know, maybe he thought that Abuka
- 54:17Speaker 2: was sitting because he did kind of sit to start.
- 54:19Speaker 2: Maybe he slipped a little bit. I don't know what
- 54:22Speaker 2: the case was. But this is every single week now
- 54:24Speaker 2: that they're busting coverages in the red zone every single week. Uh,
- 54:29Speaker 2: and it's it's got to stop. Like it's that's something
- 54:32Speaker 2: that's absolutely got to be corrected so that those couple
- 54:36Speaker 2: of things, like I don't think that giving up an
- 54:38Speaker 2: opening drive touchdown is a thing that gets you beat
- 54:42Speaker 2: because you have three and a half quarters, let's call
- 54:45Speaker 2: it to make up for it.
- 54:46Speaker 1: So because they recover.
- 54:48Speaker 2: I'm not sure that that's on that level, but the
- 54:51Speaker 2: red zone stuff is on that level of the busted coverage.
- 54:55Speaker 2: A couple just quick things on the stuff that gets
- 54:58Speaker 2: you beat. Don't think we need to blabor this point.
- 55:02Speaker 2: The Drake may interception.
- 55:03Speaker 1: Obviously, it's a interceptions.
- 55:05Speaker 2: It happen.
- 55:06Speaker 1: It just can't.
- 55:07Speaker 2: Yeah, you know, trying to do too much, trying to
- 55:09Speaker 2: be a hero, had him in structure. I felt like
- 55:12Speaker 2: watching it on tape, I thought he had maccollins open
- 55:16Speaker 2: within the play design. It was a little bluff screen,
- 55:19Speaker 2: you know, fake the screen to Diggs, send maccollins, you know,
- 55:22Speaker 2: vertically up the seam. I think if he just throws
- 55:24Speaker 2: that high to the back of the end zone, it's
- 55:26Speaker 2: a touchdown to mac collins. Doesn't throw it, doesn't like it.
- 55:30Speaker 2: Winfield was kind of in the in the picture in
- 55:33Speaker 2: the middle of the field as the as the single
- 55:35Speaker 2: high safety. Didn't like it, pulled it down. What I
- 55:40Speaker 2: was a little bit you know, small see concerned about.
- 55:43Speaker 2: He said after the game he'd throw it again, and
- 55:47Speaker 2: I get his mentality, Like I get what he's saying
- 55:50Speaker 2: in terms of the good you know, he wants to
- 55:51Speaker 2: be aggressive. Yeah, he wants to be a playmaker, and
- 55:54Speaker 2: I want him to do that too, But it just
- 55:56Speaker 2: depends on the situation of the game. Like in that situation,
- 56:01Speaker 2: the Bucks were on the ropes. If you throw that
- 56:03Speaker 2: ball into the tenth row and kick a field goal,
- 56:06Speaker 2: it's an eight point game with like five minutes ago,
- 56:09Speaker 2: or you know, with the wave, Rabel is like he
- 56:11Speaker 2: might have just gone it go on fourth down. So
- 56:14Speaker 2: you just don't need it, Like it didn't need you
- 56:16Speaker 2: didn't need to try to force it in there. It is,
- 56:19Speaker 2: the throw didn't need to happen. So that's on the
- 56:22Speaker 2: stuff that gets you beat. And you know that is
- 56:25Speaker 2: something that could have easily gotten them beat. Now the defense,
- 56:28Speaker 2: to their credit, they stepped up right, but you can't
- 56:32Speaker 2: have those types of picks from the quarterback.
- 56:34Speaker 1: One other thing from this game we didn't mention. I
- 56:36Speaker 1: don't know which category you want to put it in.
- 56:37Speaker 1: I'd put it in the good clock management. I know
- 56:41Speaker 1: it's not your favorite thing to talk about, necessarily, So
- 56:44Speaker 1: I'm interested in two things that the clock managed.
- 56:46Speaker 2: Ye, there was one more thing that I wanted to
- 56:48Speaker 2: bring up quickly about the stuff get gets.
- 56:51Speaker 1: Hid some and they recovered, but they had some bad penalties.
- 56:54Speaker 2: Yeah, the penalties don't bother me as much.
- 56:56Speaker 1: A yeah, I know they don't.
- 56:58Speaker 2: I don't know what it was. It was probably the
- 57:00Speaker 2: red zone coverage bus because it's annoying the crap out
- 57:02Speaker 2: of me.
- 57:02Speaker 1: Uh what margaus Jones muffing the punt?
- 57:04Speaker 2: Yeah, that wasn't great either. What what did you think
- 57:07Speaker 2: of the clock management? Because we kind of talked about
- 57:09Speaker 2: this on PE yesterday. I loved the end of the
- 57:14Speaker 2: half id awesome. I thought that was awesome. Evan old
- 57:18Speaker 2: school BELLICHICKI in masterstroke type stuff.
- 57:21Speaker 1: Seven sixteen. They took seven sixteen off the clock. That is,
- 57:25Speaker 1: you know, I love my shortened game philosophy, right, that
- 57:29Speaker 1: is shortening the freaking game. And they get going and
- 57:32Speaker 1: I look at the clock and this tray has been
- 57:34Speaker 1: going for a wow much times. I'm like, four minutes left.
- 57:37Speaker 1: This isn't gonna be last drout of the quarter. There's no
- 57:39Speaker 1: way they've already been going. And they keep going and
- 57:41Speaker 1: to make Tampa burn the timeouts down there in the
- 57:44Speaker 1: red zone, and you know, whatever you want to make
- 57:47Speaker 1: of that first down play. Drake may said he was
- 57:49Speaker 1: trying to get in. I don't know, but he was,
- 57:52Speaker 1: you know, I don't think the goal was to leave
- 57:53Speaker 1: it for fourth down and literally leave the clock at zero.
- 57:57Speaker 1: And if you look Trayvon Henders, I think it was
- 57:58Speaker 1: the third down play. Travondon probably scores if Will Campbell
- 58:01Speaker 1: doesn't get held. Yeah, but he gets held. He's an
- 58:03Speaker 1: old somebody gets helt.
- 58:04Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 58:05Speaker 1: But even if they score on second down. Huge difference
- 58:09Speaker 1: giving the ball back to Baker Mayfield with one forty
- 58:12Speaker 1: six left versus like a minute left. Yeah, it's a
- 58:14Speaker 1: massive difference, especially with no timeout.
- 58:16Speaker 2: So so it's one forty four left in the half
- 58:19Speaker 2: when Drake may did the sneak, not sneak like. Yeah,
- 58:23Speaker 2: So now take getting the ball back with under a minute, right,
- 58:25Speaker 2: So that takes forty seconds off the playing clock. Uh
- 58:29Speaker 2: So then at what they snapped the ball to Henderson
- 58:32Speaker 2: play on second down with one oh three left.
- 58:35Speaker 1: Yeah, so it's gonna be left by the time Henderson
- 58:37Speaker 1: gets in and then the kickoff like that's gonna take
- 58:40Speaker 1: another ten seconds off, right, So.
- 58:41Speaker 2: You're looking at the difference of giving Baker the ball back. Well,
- 58:44Speaker 2: let's call it one forty yeah, one thirty five. Maybe, uh,
- 58:48Speaker 2: let's call it one thirty because by after the kick
- 58:50Speaker 2: the KICKO, yeah, let's call it one thirty U versus
- 58:54Speaker 2: like maybe forty five seconds. Huge difference, huge difference, agreed,
- 58:59Speaker 2: huge difference. Not that I was surprised that. So you're
- 59:02Speaker 2: my clock management expert on this show, Paul is the
- 59:05Speaker 2: clock management expert on PU I was surprised.
- 59:07Speaker 1: You should learn how this works. Yeah, I know you
- 59:09Speaker 1: think the clock is irrelevant. I should learn how this.
- 59:11Speaker 2: Is your this is your thing. I don't need to
- 59:13Speaker 2: because you and Paul.
- 59:14Speaker 1: I want to say that next time you get annoyed
- 59:16Speaker 1: at me for not using analytics.
- 59:17Speaker 2: Okay, sure, I thought it was another kind of master stroke.
- 59:23Speaker 2: I mean I really did.
- 59:25Speaker 1: Running seven minutes off the clock is just like, forget
- 59:28Speaker 1: how obviously managing it at the end of half is
- 59:30Speaker 1: great and they need to catch by digs to ultimately
- 59:32Speaker 1: get it in. But like, just on top of that,
- 59:34Speaker 1: a seven minute drive, Yeah, that's a beast. That's one
- 59:38Speaker 1: of their most impressive drives of the year. Fourteen play
- 59:40Speaker 1: seventy eight yards seven to sixteen off the clock. That
- 59:43Speaker 1: that's something that's like a college football kind of thing.
- 59:45Speaker 1: You don't really take eight minutes off the clock in
- 59:47Speaker 1: the NFL on a drive. That's pretty rare. And then
- 59:51Speaker 1: at the end of the second half, obviously Trevion Henderson,
- 59:55Speaker 1: they could have run it out. You know, there would
- 59:58Speaker 1: have been a handful of seconds left. Uh, he kicked
- 1:00:01Speaker 1: the field goal. You know, things can go right. The
- 1:00:04Speaker 1: fact they go up two scores to me, you go
- 1:00:06Speaker 1: up two scores with under two minutes ago, you should
- 1:00:08Speaker 1: feel good about it. And then so.
- 1:00:11Speaker 2: There's one forty three, just like you snap the ball
- 1:00:14Speaker 2: at one forty three, Yeah, then there's a touchback, so
- 1:00:18Speaker 2: no time comes off. So it'd be one thirty one
- 1:00:22Speaker 2: that Baker snapped the ball on the bucks next final drive.
- 1:00:25Speaker 2: So so with one thirty one, let's call it one
- 1:00:28Speaker 2: thirty one. If the Patriot, if he.
- 1:00:30Speaker 1: Goes down, if he's gonna go down at one thirty one,
- 1:00:31Speaker 1: they're gonna call time out there. So now it's first
- 1:00:34Speaker 1: and ten, they can run it out.
- 1:00:36Speaker 2: I think they can't run it out, but he would
- 1:00:38Speaker 2: have to have like done that thing where you like, yeah,
- 1:00:41Speaker 2: pedal like four yards and then kneel it like you couldn't.
- 1:00:44Speaker 2: They couldn't just straight kneel on it. They would have
- 1:00:46Speaker 2: had to kind of like.
- 1:00:47Speaker 1: If the touchdown puts them up eight or less, you
- 1:00:50Speaker 1: go down. Yeah, if the touchdown puts them up eight
- 1:00:52Speaker 1: or less, you go down, you know, making it a
- 1:00:57Speaker 1: two score game. And I do we talked about the
- 1:00:58Speaker 1: Top show. I do think there's that element of trey
- 1:01:01Speaker 1: Van Henderson getting to have that moment and what that's
- 1:01:03Speaker 1: going to mean for him going forward. I didn't have
- 1:01:05Speaker 1: a huge problem with it, And part of what makes
- 1:01:08Speaker 1: me feel better about it is Henderson knew to look
- 1:01:12Speaker 1: and like knew that there was maybe it was a
- 1:01:14Speaker 1: decision there and he's fast not which is great. Well,
- 1:01:17Speaker 1: but the thing is, I think once it's not taking
- 1:01:19Speaker 1: anything away. Once he rounds the corner, the Bucks are
- 1:01:20Speaker 1: letting him score. I wonder what would have happened if
- 1:01:22Speaker 1: he started jogging at like the twenty yeah, and if
- 1:01:24Speaker 1: he could take another ten seconds off the clock because
- 1:01:26Speaker 1: the Bucks are going to let him go in. But yeah, yeah,
- 1:01:29Speaker 1: it's a goal. It's basically goalie defense, rightw You know,
- 1:01:32Speaker 1: I would have liked to see them be a little
- 1:01:34Speaker 1: more competitive on that drive after.
- 1:01:36Speaker 2: So that was the other thing a hot night.
- 1:01:38Speaker 1: Through butter and then a plus played by Stephan Diggs
- 1:01:43Speaker 1: to recover that on sidekick and he took a shot. Yeah,
- 1:01:45Speaker 1: and that's a thirty one year old All Pro made
- 1:01:47Speaker 1: his money guy going out there taking that shot for
- 1:01:49Speaker 1: the team. Good for him, man, good for him. And
- 1:01:53Speaker 1: that's part of what makes this team special.
- 1:01:55Speaker 2: Okay. So I'm glad that we brought up this sequence
- 1:01:57Speaker 2: because it made me think of the last thing that
- 1:01:59Speaker 2: I had on this stuff.
- 1:02:00Speaker 1: Because he beat I forgot to write it down the
- 1:02:02Speaker 1: Bucks last drive. Hated it.
- 1:02:07Speaker 2: I absolutely hated it from a Patriots defense perspective, Like,
- 1:02:11Speaker 2: you cannot give up a touchdown drive in less than
- 1:02:14Speaker 2: a minute in that spot, you can't do it.
- 1:02:16Speaker 1: You gotta lock down a little more.
- 1:02:17Speaker 2: You have to at least make them earn it a
- 1:02:20Speaker 2: little bit more than that. So they go thirteen yard
- 1:02:23Speaker 2: like kind of check down to Rashad White. Then the
- 1:02:26Speaker 2: twenty one yard or to Buka that really got them
- 1:02:28Speaker 2: going again. Gonzo gives him like the first like twenty
- 1:02:33Speaker 2: twenty five yards. I like he was in full prevent
- 1:02:37Speaker 2: defense mode on that play. Gives up the twenty one yarder.
- 1:02:42Speaker 1: I think was it that one. There was one. There
- 1:02:44Speaker 1: was one on that drive where they let a guy
- 1:02:46Speaker 1: get out of bounds and it's like, if you're gonna leak,
- 1:02:47Speaker 1: give that up, you have to tackle them in bounce.
- 1:02:50Speaker 2: If Sterling, Yeah, the Sterling Shepherd, one of either Tess
- 1:02:52Speaker 2: or Sterling Shepherd is like an eleven yard or than
- 1:02:55Speaker 2: a nine yarder. And then they give up the eleven
- 1:02:57Speaker 2: yard touchdown to Sterling Shepherd. So they they were able
- 1:03:01Speaker 2: to make it into a one score game again in
- 1:03:05Speaker 2: fifty eight seconds the Patriots the first snap I just mentioned,
- 1:03:09Speaker 2: Baker Mayfield snapped the ball with one thirty one left
- 1:03:12Speaker 2: in the game, and they still would have not only
- 1:03:16Speaker 2: did they score to make it a one score game,
- 1:03:18Speaker 2: they still would have had like.
- 1:03:22Speaker 1: A couple of plays for the on side kick.
- 1:03:24Speaker 2: At least thirty seconds yeah, to run offense, like if
- 1:03:28Speaker 2: they recovered the on side kick, because they would have
- 1:03:30Speaker 2: needed another touchdown. It was twenty eight, twenty three, five
- 1:03:34Speaker 2: point game. But Baker Drake may snapped the ball on
- 1:03:37Speaker 2: his kneel down with thirty two seconds left, so they
- 1:03:39Speaker 2: would have had the ball at the fifty with thirty
- 1:03:42Speaker 2: two seconds left, needing a touchdown. That's plenty of time
- 1:03:45Speaker 2: in the league. Nowadays, to score a touchdown, you have
- 1:03:48Speaker 2: to be better than that.
- 1:03:49Speaker 1: That was not at You got to keep guys in

- 1:06:49Speaker 2: go to the phones. Uh Todd is in Gardner? What's up, Todd?
- 1:06:55Speaker 3: Hey, guys, I've got a quick request. I've been thinking
- 1:06:57Speaker 3: about all the rookies we've got and as I pu,
- 1:07:00Speaker 3: I was happy to see them get mentioned in you know,
- 1:07:03Speaker 3: after further review with you, because that just means they're contributing.
- 1:07:08Speaker 3: So I just like to give us a grade where
- 1:07:10Speaker 3: you think they are for mid term. I know you
- 1:07:12Speaker 3: might not have time, stakes do want to get the Jets.
- 1:07:14Speaker 3: My other quick comment is, don't freaking overlook the Jets
- 1:07:17Speaker 3: because we're tired. It's a short week. We're really entered.
- 1:07:21Speaker 3: I'm a little worried after that. Hey, have a good
- 1:07:23Speaker 3: show and keep picking on bars. Don't let them get
- 1:07:26Speaker 3: away with stuff.
- 1:07:26Speaker 2: Evan Okay, yeah, yeah, don't get what am I getting
- 1:07:30Speaker 2: away with? Yeah, I'm gonna keep picking on what what
- 1:07:32Speaker 2: am I getting away with? I don't know. We we
- 1:07:35Speaker 2: pick on each other equally I'm getting away with It's
- 1:07:39Speaker 2: like two brothers bickering at each other. Just is what
- 1:07:41Speaker 2: it is. Uh, don't see one of the Jets. I
- 1:07:44Speaker 2: agree with that. Yeah, we'll get a little bit more
- 1:07:46Speaker 2: of a Jets preview here in a second. The rookie class,
- 1:07:49Speaker 2: so I think that they grade out pretty highly in
- 1:07:53Speaker 2: my mind right now now. I don't think that it's
- 1:07:56Speaker 2: always been perfect, Like these guys have had some.
- 1:07:58Speaker 1: Rookie growin here to expectations.
- 1:08:01Speaker 2: Yeah, you know, I think Campbell has been exactly what
- 1:08:04Speaker 2: I thought set in and forget it at left tackle.
- 1:08:06Speaker 2: I mean, has it been perfect? Absolutely not. You know,
- 1:08:09Speaker 2: I think there are things in this game too with
- 1:08:11Speaker 2: him that on terms of stunts and things like that,
- 1:08:15Speaker 2: that needs to improve, But it certainly hasn't held them
- 1:08:19Speaker 2: back at all. Like starting left Yeah, their top ten
- 1:08:22Speaker 2: scoring offense, top ten passing offense, top ten explosive play
- 1:08:26Speaker 2: rate offense. Like if they had terrible left tackle play
- 1:08:30Speaker 2: and terrible left guard play too. To put it with
- 1:08:33Speaker 2: Jared Wilson, I do not think that they would be
- 1:08:36Speaker 2: up there in pretty much every passing category. It took
- 1:08:41Speaker 2: Travon Henderson a little bit to get going, Yeah, getting
- 1:08:44Speaker 2: going now, So I think that that's been a positive trend.
- 1:08:48Speaker 2: Kyle Williams the same thing behind a lot of veteran players,
- 1:08:50Speaker 2: so that that's part of it too with him. And
- 1:08:53Speaker 2: I'll say what I said at the beginning of the show,
- 1:08:54Speaker 2: Craig Woodson, I think has been fantastic. I really do.
- 1:08:58Speaker 2: I'm really excited about him. I think he flies to
- 1:09:01Speaker 2: the football. I think he plays with great play, speed
- 1:09:04Speaker 2: and physicality. He's an effort and finished kind of guy.
- 1:09:07Speaker 2: He can play multiple roles. He had a great coverage
- 1:09:10Speaker 2: rep in this game where they motioned from like a
- 1:09:15Speaker 2: three by one into two by two and they motioned
- 1:09:17Speaker 2: a receiver from left to right and he was the
- 1:09:20Speaker 2: post safety. Jalen Hawkins was down in the box when
- 1:09:23Speaker 2: they motioned, they flipped Jalen Hawkins went back. Craig Woodson
- 1:09:26Speaker 2: came down and stand played over the slot. They then
- 1:09:30Speaker 2: ran like kind of the same exact concept they ran
- 1:09:32Speaker 2: on ag Buka's touchdown, a sort of like a post
- 1:09:36Speaker 2: wheel type of concept and they're trying to hit a
- 1:09:38Speaker 2: big play down the field and Craig Woodson carried the
- 1:09:41Speaker 2: wheel and was just there like he was just in
- 1:09:43Speaker 2: the right spot. Like he don't get a box score
- 1:09:46Speaker 2: stat because of that because he didn't get targeted or
- 1:09:49Speaker 2: anything like that, but just like a real heads up,
- 1:09:51Speaker 2: like good coverage rep by Craig Woodson. I thought that
- 1:09:55Speaker 2: it wasn't just the on ball production. He was really
- 1:09:57Speaker 2: good away from the ball too. Down the field and
- 1:10:00Speaker 2: coverage really excited about him, like he's a kind of
- 1:10:04Speaker 2: kudos to them. I was wrong about him, Like I
- 1:10:06Speaker 2: thought they overdrafted him and they didn't. I think they
- 1:10:09Speaker 2: they nailed that pick. So what would I rate the
- 1:10:11Speaker 2: whole rookie class.
- 1:10:12Speaker 1: Well, you forget I mean, Joshua Farmer's giving them some
- 1:10:14Speaker 1: good snaps. Yeah, obviously the specialists. Borgalis and I haven't
- 1:10:19Speaker 1: even talked about Borgallis has bounced back after rough first
- 1:10:23Speaker 1: couple of weeks. Ashby's been excellent. Marcus Bryant is not
- 1:10:26Speaker 1: allowed a single pressure, one hundred percent pass block win rate.
- 1:10:29Speaker 2: Hasn't played well.
- 1:10:30Speaker 1: No, he has one passblock snap because they put him
- 1:10:33Speaker 1: in a couple of those games that will blowouts. But no,
- 1:10:36Speaker 1: I mean they I mean that's tongue cheek. But even
- 1:10:38Speaker 1: though some of those step guys have been good. Yeah,
- 1:10:40Speaker 1: I do think we will see Braden Swinton before the
- 1:10:43Speaker 1: year's over.
- 1:10:43Speaker 3: I do.
- 1:10:43Speaker 1: I don't know that we'll see him a lot, but
- 1:10:45Speaker 1: I do think we're gonna seem at some point before
- 1:10:46Speaker 1: the year's over.
- 1:10:47Speaker 2: I think so far, I maybe i'd give it like
- 1:10:50Speaker 2: a solid B plus, A minus, somewhere in that range. Yeah,
- 1:10:53Speaker 2: I was gonna say B plus, Like it hasn't been
- 1:10:54Speaker 2: an absolute home run, but they've gotten contributors. They've gotten
- 1:10:58Speaker 2: two starters, it looks like on the offensive line. Yeah,
- 1:11:00Speaker 2: maybe Jared Wilson's a center next year long term, but yeah,
- 1:11:04Speaker 2: it's hard.
- 1:11:05Speaker 1: So something it's gonna come down to, like where does
- 1:11:07Speaker 1: Jared Wilson end up long term?
- 1:11:08Speaker 2: Right?
- 1:11:08Speaker 1: You know, are they gonna have to Are they planning
- 1:11:12Speaker 1: on Trevia on Henderson being a bellcow or is it
- 1:11:14Speaker 1: going to be him and reminder Stevenson or him in
- 1:11:16Speaker 1: another back Like we'll see with that in the big picture.
- 1:11:19Speaker 1: But yeah, i'd say b plus.
- 1:11:22Speaker 2: Yeah. So the other thing, you know, just quickly on
- 1:11:24Speaker 2: Craig Woodson too, because I'm just excited about Craig Woodson.
- 1:11:27Speaker 2: He made a play in this game too that he
- 1:11:29Speaker 2: was kind of targeted on where he was the post
- 1:11:32Speaker 2: safety in the middle of the field, and they ran
- 1:11:34Speaker 2: again like sort of like a wheel post on to
- 1:11:37Speaker 2: the right of Baker's mayfield right, and he stayed glued
- 1:11:41Speaker 2: to the post so that he could help Gonzo on
- 1:11:43Speaker 2: the post, which is where he was supposed to be.
- 1:11:46Speaker 2: And then Baker worked from the front side of the
- 1:11:49Speaker 2: concept to the backside of the concept, and on the
- 1:11:52Speaker 2: back side of the concept he had like a seam
- 1:11:54Speaker 2: route that should have been a huge play. Craig Woodson
- 1:11:58Speaker 2: started on the post, stayed in the middle of the field,
- 1:12:00Speaker 2: flipped his hips and like ran to the seam and
- 1:12:03Speaker 2: squeezed the seam. It was like a great play. I
- 1:12:06Speaker 2: was like, wow, now a great throw would have beaten him. Still, yeah,
- 1:12:09Speaker 2: but it was one of those situations where he was
- 1:12:13Speaker 2: enough in the area that it made it a harder
- 1:12:17Speaker 2: play to make for the offense. And that to me
- 1:12:20Speaker 2: was like, that was Devin mccordy esque, right, Like, that's
- 1:12:23Speaker 2: like what you want from a single high safety is
- 1:12:26Speaker 2: you know, stay on the front side of the concept,
- 1:12:29Speaker 2: take away the initial read when he comes back backside,
- 1:12:32Speaker 2: can you go from one hatch to the other and
- 1:12:34Speaker 2: recover to the backside And he did a great job
- 1:12:37Speaker 2: of that on that play. I just thought this was
- 1:12:39Speaker 2: I thought it has been a while now, like a
- 1:12:41Speaker 2: couple weeks in a row where I feel like Craig
- 1:12:43Speaker 2: Woodson's really starting to come into his own. Let's get
- 1:12:46Speaker 2: back to the phones. Patty is an agua? What's up? Patty?
- 1:12:51Speaker 3: Hey?
- 1:12:51Speaker 7: What's going on?
- 1:12:52Speaker 2: Guys? Eight? What's up?
- 1:12:55Speaker 7: Not too much? So there's three things that I wanted
- 1:12:58Speaker 7: to see happening in this game that I think the
- 1:13:03Speaker 7: Patriots have been lacking all two of them definitely. The
- 1:13:06Speaker 7: first one is I want to see some turnovers because
- 1:13:09Speaker 7: if you look at like it's more specifically some picks,
- 1:13:13Speaker 7: because our guys haven't got a lot of picks this
- 1:13:15Speaker 7: year so far. I think Splaine leads leads the team
- 1:13:19Speaker 7: with two so far. And this is a good game
- 1:13:21Speaker 7: to do it because you know the Jets that they
- 1:13:23Speaker 7: try to throw the ball, they're going to try, you know,
- 1:13:25Speaker 7: they need to turn it over. Talk about the middle eights.
- 1:13:28Speaker 7: One thing I haven't seen the last two games is
- 1:13:30Speaker 7: when the second half, that's number two and number three
- 1:13:33Speaker 7: is keep feeding the rookies. You know, Booty's going to
- 1:13:37Speaker 7: be back eventually, but while he's sidelined, you know, keep
- 1:13:41Speaker 7: feeding Kyle Williams, rom Andre is going to be back eventually.
- 1:13:45Speaker 7: Keep feeding, keep feeding, trade down. I want to see
- 1:13:48Speaker 7: those guys not necessarily like with good stats at the
- 1:13:52Speaker 7: end of the year, but like by the end of
- 1:13:54Speaker 7: the year saying we got two really good friggin players
- 1:13:57Speaker 7: in the second third round of the draft this year.
- 1:13:59Speaker 7: That's all I got. I'll talk to you guys, or Alex,
- 1:14:03Speaker 7: I'll talk to you on Thursday if you do the
- 1:14:05Speaker 7: pregame show later.
- 1:14:07Speaker 2: Thanks Patt. I appreciate the call. So on the second
- 1:14:11Speaker 2: half stuff. Yeah, we got a caller in yesterday that
- 1:14:14Speaker 2: on PU that had all the numbers of like their score.
- 1:14:17Speaker 1: First time third quarter points since the Bills game.
- 1:14:20Speaker 2: Yeah, so it's been a while in the third quarter.
- 1:14:22Speaker 2: The fourth quarter is scoring differential, I know, is not great.
- 1:14:26Speaker 2: I kind of give them a pass on that because
- 1:14:27Speaker 2: there's so many blowouts. Yeah, and so it's like against Carolina,
- 1:14:31Speaker 2: against Tennessee, against Cleveland, they put that game away, So
- 1:14:38Speaker 2: like if they needed to keep scoring in those games,
- 1:14:40Speaker 2: I think they were able would have been able to
- 1:14:42Speaker 2: keep scoring. Now last week and they only scored three
- 1:14:46Speaker 2: points in the second half against Atlanta, and then this
- 1:14:49Speaker 2: past week they kind of let the Bucks hang around
- 1:14:51Speaker 2: a little bit in this game. Those are fair criticisms,
- 1:14:53Speaker 2: and I think that their offense has not necessarily sustained
- 1:14:58Speaker 2: through four quarters every single week, and you'd probably like
- 1:15:01Speaker 2: to see more of like a complete sustainable offensive performance.
- 1:15:06Speaker 2: And it's kind of why they flame out like in
- 1:15:08Speaker 2: the high twenties every week, Like it's like, you know,
- 1:15:11Speaker 2: twenty four to twenty eight points a game because they're
- 1:15:14Speaker 2: not necessarily scoring a ton in the fourth quarter. So
- 1:15:18Speaker 2: fair points on that one with Pat for Patty don
- 1:15:21Speaker 2: is in Philly? What's up Don?
- 1:15:25Speaker 8: Hey guys, how are we doing?
- 1:15:27Speaker 1: Not bad?
- 1:15:28Speaker 8: So I have two questions here the kind of build
- 1:15:34Speaker 8: like some of the questions build off each other. But
- 1:15:37Speaker 8: first of all, would you rather JFN or Gonzo? And
- 1:15:41Speaker 8: I know Evan mentioned this a while back, and I
- 1:15:43Speaker 8: don't want to speak for him because this isn't exactly
- 1:15:46Speaker 8: what he said. But do you want to PRECFAE by
- 1:15:48Speaker 8: saying I love Gonzo. I think he's a great player.
- 1:15:51Speaker 8: I think he's one of the best, you know, lockdown
- 1:15:53Speaker 8: corners in the league. But if he's not a brable
- 1:15:58Speaker 8: guy and they don't want to pay him, you know,
- 1:16:00Speaker 8: top market money, would you ever consider trading him like
- 1:16:05Speaker 8: the Jets did with Sauce if it guaranteed, you know,
- 1:16:08Speaker 8: a playmaker in a first or maybe two first And
- 1:16:12Speaker 8: then secondly, how many wins do you think we need
- 1:16:15Speaker 8: to win the AFC East and secure the number one seed?
- 1:16:19Speaker 8: So you could do that separately, like how many wins
- 1:16:21Speaker 8: do we just need to get the you know, to
- 1:16:24Speaker 8: win the AFC East? And how many do you think
- 1:16:27Speaker 8: we need to secure the one seat and have home
- 1:16:30Speaker 8: field advantage in the buy take it offer?
- 1:16:32Speaker 2: Thanks? For the call. Don So Jaysn versus Gonzo is
- 1:16:35Speaker 2: the twenty twenty two draft revisited. They could have drafted
- 1:16:40Speaker 2: either one of those guys in twenty two. I think
- 1:16:42Speaker 2: jays N was still on the board at that point.
- 1:16:45Speaker 2: I don't know. It's hard to sit here and say
- 1:16:47Speaker 2: that I'm upset that they took Gonzo. Like, obviously, Jayson's
- 1:16:51Speaker 2: a fantastic players, probably a top five receiver in football.
- 1:16:55Speaker 2: Gonzo's probably a top five corner in football. Like, I'd
- 1:16:58Speaker 2: probably give the edges a little bit to j s
- 1:17:00Speaker 2: N because he's a receiver versus a corner. But like,
- 1:17:03Speaker 2: I'm not mad that they took No, I'm not.
- 1:17:06Speaker 1: And you go back and you look at what their
- 1:17:07Speaker 1: wide receiver development was at that time. Does he become
- 1:17:10Speaker 1: that player if he's here? So no, I yeah, Kim Gonzales,
- 1:17:16Speaker 1: Yeah that's fair.
- 1:17:18Speaker 2: What was the other thing that, Oh, you're.
- 1:17:20Speaker 1: Gonna hate this. How many wins to an AFC East
- 1:17:23Speaker 1: and how many wins? Well, so here's the.
- 1:17:25Speaker 2: Oh, before we get to that, he did to ask
- 1:17:27Speaker 2: if we would trade Gonzo if they are not gonna
- 1:17:30Speaker 2: extend him. So this is yeah, I mean, this is sauce,
- 1:17:35Speaker 2: like Micah Parson's just had this happen to you, right,
- 1:17:37Speaker 2: Uh yeah, I mean obviously if yeah, if you're if
- 1:17:42Speaker 2: you're really far apart in contract negotiations and you get
- 1:17:45Speaker 2: an offer of two first round picks and a player
- 1:17:48Speaker 2: or something crazy for Christian Gonzales, then yeah you obviously.
- 1:17:53Speaker 1: Yeah, you can't a guy like that walk, But I'd
- 1:17:56Speaker 1: rather pay him cigarette good player and not they shouldn't
- 1:17:58Speaker 1: be in the business and moving on from football per se. Yeah,
- 1:18:02Speaker 1: all right, how many wins? So how many wins would
- 1:18:03Speaker 1: take to win the AFCs. Let's do that first. So
- 1:18:07Speaker 1: Buffalo plays a tough and probably angry Tampa team this week.
- 1:18:11Speaker 1: If they lose that.
- 1:18:12Speaker 2: I did see that it is kind of a sneaky
- 1:18:14Speaker 2: hard game for the Bills, but.
- 1:18:16Speaker 1: The Bucks have always given them trouble. Yeah, you know,
- 1:18:20Speaker 1: they go to six and four, that's now essentially a
- 1:18:23Speaker 1: three and a half game lead for the Patriots, to
- 1:18:26Speaker 1: two and a half game lead, but they have the
- 1:18:29Speaker 1: one in hand. They had to head right swides two
- 1:18:31Speaker 1: and a half, it would be two in the lost
- 1:18:34Speaker 1: column and then you have the tiebreakers. So that's like
- 1:18:37Speaker 1: kind of like they have. So if if you know,
- 1:18:42Speaker 1: if Patriots take care of business against the Jets and
- 1:18:44Speaker 1: Buffalo loses. So Buffalo's next four games the end of
- 1:18:49Speaker 1: their schedule is brutal Tampa. Yeah, Houston has a great defense. Yeah,
- 1:18:54Speaker 1: Davis Mills, what's up game? I'm sure CJ. Strove will
- 1:18:59Speaker 1: be back? Yeahs Burg yep not. And that's in Pittsburgh,
- 1:19:03Speaker 1: I think, right in Pittsburgh. And then the Bengals, whose
- 1:19:08Speaker 1: defense is wretched, but they're gonna Burrow back. They're probably
- 1:19:12Speaker 1: gonna have Burrow back.
- 1:19:13Speaker 2: I think they have to have them back by then.
- 1:19:14Speaker 2: I think that's that's the Seyboda window. And even if
- 1:19:17Speaker 2: they don't have Burrow, Joe Flacko's that's right.
- 1:19:21Speaker 1: Joe Flack was hanging forty on. So that's four tough games,
- 1:19:24Speaker 1: and then you go come here to play the Pad.
- 1:19:26Speaker 1: And then after that, I think, is the Eagles, right.
- 1:19:28Speaker 2: The Eagles in week seventeen? Yeah, the Browns and the
- 1:19:30Speaker 2: Jets sandwiched in between whatever.
- 1:19:32Speaker 1: But like, you know, how many wins is it gonna
- 1:19:34Speaker 1: take if even if they lose that game to Buffalo
- 1:19:39Speaker 1: and it gets split.
- 1:19:40Speaker 2: I think if they win twelve games, they win the division.
- 1:19:41Speaker 1: I was gonna say, I was gonna say, does eleven
- 1:19:43Speaker 1: wins get it done? I think twelve twelve death well
- 1:19:46Speaker 1: does definitely, Because to get to twelve, they how many
- 1:19:48Speaker 1: games they've left?
- 1:19:49Speaker 2: Nine?
- 1:19:50Speaker 1: Oh, no, I'm doing math. Nine have seven games, they
- 1:19:53Speaker 1: have seven games left.
- 1:19:54Speaker 2: They played ten. This is the easiest math pot.
- 1:19:56Speaker 1: I forgot because about right, So they have seven games left.
- 1:19:59Speaker 1: So to get to twelve wins, they'd have to go
- 1:20:01Speaker 1: six and one. What they have seven games left, they
- 1:20:05Speaker 1: have seven games left. They only need to win four
- 1:20:07Speaker 1: more games to get twelve wins. Buffalo, Oh, buff Buffalo
- 1:20:11Speaker 1: would have to go give me that stretch a sorry, yeah,
- 1:20:13Speaker 1: give I'm not that bad at that.
- 1:20:14Speaker 2: Give that stretch again. I'm not that bad Bucks, Texans, Steelers, Bengals, Patriots, Brown's, Eagles, Jets.
- 1:20:21Speaker 1: Can they go six and one in that?
- 1:20:23Speaker 2: I mean they could, Like the Bills are really good teams.
- 1:20:27Speaker 1: Yeah, but like that's not an easy It's not gonna
- 1:20:30Speaker 1: be easy, So it's not twelve I think definitely gets
- 1:20:32Speaker 1: it to you. If they beat the Bills. Yeah, if
- 1:20:35Speaker 1: the Patriots beat the Bills, here, eleven gets it done.
- 1:20:37Speaker 1: I think so, I'm not you probably need another game somewhere.
- 1:20:40Speaker 2: Earlier in the show. I I I told you I'm
- 1:20:42Speaker 2: not stitious. I'm just a little stitious. So I didn't
- 1:20:44Speaker 2: want to talk about all this, all right, I didn't
- 1:20:46Speaker 2: want to talk about it. But he can get mad
- 1:20:47Speaker 2: at me. I'm sorry.
- 1:20:48Speaker 1: I just don't you know, well, if they lose to
- 1:20:50Speaker 1: the Jets and Victors.
- 1:20:53Speaker 2: Okay, uh. I did allow myself to think a little bit, Yeah,
- 1:20:59Speaker 2: the Bills and fifteen.
- 1:21:01Speaker 1: That game's that Probably that game's for the division.
- 1:21:05Speaker 2: If the Bills kind of don't recover here, yeah, and
- 1:21:09Speaker 2: they lose a couple more times before they play, they
- 1:21:12Speaker 2: could that could be a hat and T shirt game
- 1:21:15Speaker 2: that literally even if.
- 1:21:16Speaker 1: The Bills are good like that could maybe not literally
- 1:21:18Speaker 1: hat and T shirt game, but.
- 1:21:20Speaker 2: Let me ask it could more or less can like
- 1:21:23Speaker 2: decide the division?
- 1:21:24Speaker 1: Yes, but I think Pending made multiple major upsets, which
- 1:21:27Speaker 1: can always happen. It's the NFL's National Football League. Can
- 1:21:31Speaker 1: the Bills win the division without beating the Patriots here?
- 1:21:33Speaker 4: No?
- 1:21:33Speaker 2: But I think that really like if you look at it,
- 1:21:36Speaker 2: especially the way the Patriots schedule lines up here. You know, Jets, Bangels,
- 1:21:41Speaker 2: Giants where I gets twice the Bengals are hard I
- 1:21:44Speaker 2: think harder maybe.
- 1:21:46Speaker 1: Bengal is a sneaky trap game. You gotta go there,
- 1:21:48Speaker 1: and Joe Flack has just playing their offense is good.
- 1:21:51Speaker 1: You can't play that off coverage against that that team.
- 1:21:53Speaker 2: So Jets, Bengals, Giants. Yeah, let's just say the good
- 1:21:57Speaker 2: times keep rolling here for the Patriots if they're uh,
- 1:22:01Speaker 2: you know, eleven and two going out coming off the bye,
- 1:22:04Speaker 2: going into that Buffalo game here at Gillette, like, a
- 1:22:08Speaker 2: are the Bills? Are they?
- 1:22:09Speaker 4: Is it?
- 1:22:10Speaker 2: Now? If they have a three game lead out of
- 1:22:11Speaker 2: that with the tiebreakers, it's over.
- 1:22:14Speaker 1: That is right? That could literally be ahead and t
- 1:22:16Speaker 1: shirt game. Yeah right and all Buffalo loss.
- 1:22:18Speaker 2: That's happened, right, Yeah, it's not inconceivable.
- 1:22:21Speaker 1: So I look at the rest of the Patriots schedule.
- 1:22:24Speaker 1: I know you didn't want to get ahead of ourselves,
- 1:22:25Speaker 1: but here we are.
- 1:22:25Speaker 2: Yep. I did it to myself. It's fine.
- 1:22:28Speaker 1: They have the Bills, yep, they have the Ravens, and
- 1:22:32Speaker 1: again I think at the Bengals is a sneaky tough game.
- 1:22:35Speaker 1: They should win it, but it's a sneaky tough game
- 1:22:37Speaker 1: if they If they win one of those, you can't
- 1:22:40Speaker 1: get swept. You can't get swept in those three because
- 1:22:42Speaker 1: everything else is easy. You got the Giants, you get
- 1:22:43Speaker 1: the Jets twice, you got the Dolphins, and I think
- 1:22:45Speaker 1: that's it, right, And ask anybody you can't get swept
- 1:22:49Speaker 1: in those three. If you win one, all right, you're
- 1:22:51Speaker 1: probably gonna be okay. If they can just take two
- 1:22:54Speaker 1: of those three, they're golden. Yeah, they are in great shape.
- 1:22:58Speaker 1: They just got to win two of those three against
- 1:23:00Speaker 1: the Bills, the Ravens, and the Bengals. I think that
- 1:23:04Speaker 1: the Ravens game is probably the toughest of those three.
- 1:23:07Speaker 1: I don't know if you'd agree with that or not.
- 1:23:09Speaker 1: If you're a Patriots fan and there's not a part
- 1:23:12Speaker 1: of you, no matter who they're putting on the field
- 1:23:14Speaker 1: that's nervous going into Baltimore, you're kidding yourself. So I
- 1:23:18Speaker 1: but yeah, Lamar, this is assuming Lamar plays, obviously, But
- 1:23:22Speaker 1: I on this game left, I guess is what I'm asking.
- 1:23:26Speaker 2: For the Bills, No, for the Patriots, Buffalo, Baltimore and Buffalo, which.
- 1:23:31Speaker 1: I'm asking what is the toughest. So I think it's Baltimore.
- 1:23:34Speaker 2: I think it's sneaky Baltimore because I think Buffalo is
- 1:23:36Speaker 2: gonna make the playoffs. I think they know it.
- 1:23:38Speaker 1: Baltimore might need to keep winning, right, like they might
- 1:23:42Speaker 1: need to really and it's there. Yeah you haven't. You know,
- 1:23:46Speaker 1: they're a little more familiar with Josh Allen. When's the
- 1:23:48Speaker 1: last time they played the Ravens be in a minute,
- 1:23:50Speaker 1: probably that was it the game that Mac Jones busted
- 1:23:53Speaker 1: his ankle and DeVante Parker like one hundred and eighty yards.
- 1:23:55Speaker 2: Okay, so, uh, the I told you I wasn't gonna
- 1:24:01Speaker 2: do playoff permutations and seeding and matchups. I will do
- 1:24:04Speaker 2: division like. That's that's where you're okay.
- 1:24:08Speaker 1: No, I mean that's very relevant.
- 1:24:09Speaker 2: And winning the division. I think you know Mike Rabel
- 1:24:12Speaker 2: when he took the job in January, yeah said checkpoint
- 1:24:16Speaker 2: number one, take advantage of bad football. I think they're
- 1:24:19Speaker 2: well beyond taking advantage of bad football. Yes, checkpoint number two,
- 1:24:23Speaker 2: win the division host home playoff games. I put those
- 1:24:27Speaker 2: two together because if you win the division, you're gonna
- 1:24:29Speaker 2: hont you automatically host a home playoff game. So win
- 1:24:32Speaker 2: the division, host a home playoff game. That checkpoint is right.
- 1:24:37Speaker 1: I'll give you one more sneaky important thing in this too. Yep,
- 1:24:40Speaker 1: that loss to Miami is massive because of the division record.
- 1:24:46Speaker 1: Yeah right, that's the second tiebreaker if the Bills come
- 1:24:48Speaker 1: in here and win the head division record. Right, the
- 1:24:50Speaker 1: Bills are now two and two in the division. Patriots
- 1:24:52Speaker 1: are two and Oh they still have a bunch of
- 1:24:53Speaker 1: division games left.
- 1:24:54Speaker 2: But yeah, no, that is right there, and I will
- 1:24:57Speaker 2: also I will also allow for the Umber one seat,
- 1:25:00Speaker 2: which I think is also right there for the taking.
- 1:25:03Speaker 2: You know, it's gonna be a three years there.
- 1:25:04Speaker 1: I mean, there's a lot more going on there. But
- 1:25:07Speaker 1: I think this year, like I said, by the way,
- 1:25:09Speaker 1: the Patriots, Colts and Broncos and it feels like we're
- 1:25:13Speaker 1: in high school again.
- 1:25:14Speaker 2: This is great.
- 1:25:15Speaker 1: I will tell melcome back to twenty twelve.
- 1:25:17Speaker 2: I probably I might eat my words on this eventually
- 1:25:20Speaker 2: in January, if the Patriots play the Colts or Broncos,
- 1:25:24Speaker 2: I don't care where that game is. I'm taking the Patriots.
- 1:25:26Speaker 2: I don't care.
- 1:25:27Speaker 1: I have I don't care PTSD going to Denver and
- 1:25:30Speaker 1: it's really I don't care if.
- 1:25:31Speaker 2: It's an Indie or Denver. I actually if it's in Indy,
- 1:25:36Speaker 2: I really like the Patriots because it's a dome and
- 1:25:39Speaker 2: Drake May is gonna throw for three hundred faking yards
- 1:25:41Speaker 2: in that dome. I would take the Patriots. I do
- 1:25:43Speaker 2: not trust the jon.
- 1:25:44Speaker 1: From I don't want to get too ahead of myself. Yep,
- 1:25:47Speaker 1: and here we are seventy five eighty five minutes later.
- 1:25:51Speaker 1: The Patriots are going to blow doors against the Colts
- 1:25:54Speaker 1: on the road in the I don't.
- 1:25:55Speaker 2: Trust that Colts team at all. I watched them in Germany.
- 1:25:58Speaker 2: I know it's granted, it's a international game. Those are
- 1:26:01Speaker 2: always tough. They pulled it out. I get that. Uh,
- 1:26:04Speaker 2: you know how I feel about teams that are built
- 1:26:08Speaker 2: with their run first. You know that I don't trust those.
- 1:26:11Speaker 2: Uh kind of well, I just think the Broncos offense
- 1:26:14Speaker 2: just kind of stinks.
- 1:26:15Speaker 1: I I think I think the Colts are more real
- 1:26:17Speaker 1: than the Broncos. The Colts, to me, there's something there,
- 1:26:21Speaker 1: and you may not love the way they're building. I
- 1:26:23Speaker 1: got what you're saying about the dome. They're saying that
- 1:26:25Speaker 1: Jones will turn back into a pumpkin. So you you
- 1:26:27Speaker 1: said earlier you don't think the Chargers could get it.
- 1:26:30Speaker 1: It's even at seven and three. You wonder if the
- 1:26:32Speaker 1: Chargers would get in.
- 1:26:32Speaker 2: I worry about that Chargers team. I do their offensive
- 1:26:35Speaker 2: line is decimated, like Joe Halt and Rashaun Slater are now.
- 1:26:39Speaker 2: They are either out for the season or Joe Alt
- 1:26:42Speaker 2: is dealing with an high ankle. I think it is
- 1:26:44Speaker 2: like that's never good. Uh, but I I just the
- 1:26:49Speaker 2: Colts specifically. I would love for the Patriots to play
- 1:26:52Speaker 2: the Colts because I think that's a great I'm not
- 1:26:55Speaker 2: saying just because I think the Patriots would win, Like,
- 1:26:57Speaker 2: I actually just think that's a great football game. Would
- 1:27:00Speaker 2: Jonathan Taylor against defense this run defense, Drake May against
- 1:27:05Speaker 2: lou Anaumo, Like that's a great matchup, you know, Josh
- 1:27:08Speaker 2: versus lou two, Like that's a great football game on paper.
- 1:27:13Speaker 2: I just really think just like Minnesota last year with
- 1:27:16Speaker 2: Sam Darnold, just like the Vikings a couple of years ago.
- 1:27:20Speaker 2: I think it's twenty two right where they had like
- 1:27:22Speaker 2: that flash in the pan season.
- 1:27:24Speaker 1: I just look at the Giants the Daniel Jones breakout,
- 1:27:27Speaker 1: Like I.
- 1:27:28Speaker 2: Just look at this cold team and I'm like, I
- 1:27:31Speaker 2: think that they'll have the exact same season that the
- 1:27:34Speaker 2: Vikings had last year. Great regular season, fun story wants
- 1:27:38Speaker 2: it's time to play the big dogs in the playoffs.
- 1:27:40Speaker 2: Daniel Jones turns.
- 1:27:40Speaker 1: Back into who's the best AFC?
- 1:27:43Speaker 2: Right now? Yeah, I work for them. I don't know,
- 1:27:48Speaker 2: I'll like that's it like they're ain't and two. I
- 1:27:51Speaker 2: mean like they have their tie for the best. And
- 1:27:53Speaker 2: I'll tell you this now, I don't think that they're
- 1:27:58Speaker 2: based off of their resid may. Yeah, they're the best.
- 1:28:01Speaker 1: Who's been the best team in the AFC through ten weeks?
- 1:28:04Speaker 2: Right?
- 1:28:04Speaker 1: That's different than what I'm asking is the best. I'm
- 1:28:06Speaker 1: not asking you he's gonna come out of the AFC.
- 1:28:07Speaker 1: Who's been the best team in the AFC through ten weeks?
- 1:28:09Speaker 1: You have power rank the AFC right now, Patrick Patrisone,
- 1:28:12Speaker 1: I'll tell you this. I can't believe I'm saying this. Yeah,
- 1:28:16Speaker 1: the Chiefs are a little bit of a sleeping giant
- 1:28:18Speaker 1: at team maybe many And they go into Denver this
- 1:28:21Speaker 1: week and we just talked about that Broncos seam being fraudulent,
- 1:28:23Speaker 1: but like Denver's a tough places to play, It's a
- 1:28:25Speaker 1: divisional game they go in.
- 1:28:27Speaker 2: That's what it worries me about not getting the number
- 1:28:31Speaker 2: one seed is that you could be the second overall
- 1:28:35Speaker 2: seed in the comment and you have to play Kansas
- 1:28:37Speaker 2: City and have to play Patrick Mahomes and wild card
- 1:28:39Speaker 2: wak if they go in and blow doors against Denver,
- 1:28:41Speaker 2: that's such a message to the league. That's such a
- 1:28:44Speaker 2: message to the league that like, hey, don't have to
- 1:28:46Speaker 2: sit out of the Kansas City is in there two thousand,
- 1:28:49Speaker 2: right now, they're in there, twenty eighteen Patriots era, right
- 1:28:52Speaker 2: now they are.
- 1:28:53Speaker 1: You're saying it's almost over.
- 1:28:54Speaker 2: No, maybe, but I am also saying, well, it's almost
- 1:28:57Speaker 2: over for you know, it's almost over for Kelsey, It's
- 1:29:00Speaker 2: almost over for Chris Jones.
- 1:29:02Speaker 1: Like they're how much long is Andy Reagan?
- 1:29:04Speaker 2: They're gonna have to turn over some of this roster
- 1:29:05Speaker 2: around Mahomes even more than they already have. But Kansas
- 1:29:09Speaker 2: City in December and January, they'll turn it on. They'll
- 1:29:13Speaker 2: they'll get into the playoffs and then anything can happen.
- 1:29:16Speaker 1: Right now because of that, Trevor laur November twelfth, Yeah,
- 1:29:22Speaker 1: I got to climb back in the rest of the
- 1:29:24Speaker 1: season is not ending today. Who's the best team in
- 1:29:26Speaker 1: the NFC.
- 1:29:29Speaker 2: That's a tougher one.
- 1:29:30Speaker 1: I I have a take it might be a little
- 1:29:31Speaker 1: crazy and maybe I'm caught up in the moment. Yeah,
- 1:29:34Speaker 1: probably is it Seattle they're playing like the best team rules.
- 1:29:39Speaker 1: They're playing like they're kind of the NFC version of
- 1:29:41Speaker 1: the Patriots right where I think that the NFC version
- 1:29:44Speaker 1: of the Colts. But no, just what they're doing with
- 1:29:47Speaker 1: the deep ball, Like I know we're talking about Stafford,
- 1:29:50Speaker 1: and I think Stafford and Drake may Or the two
- 1:29:51Speaker 1: m VP favorites, right, Yeah, Darnald might need to be
- 1:29:54Speaker 1: in that conversation.
- 1:29:55Speaker 2: Yeah, I think Darnald's in the COMMO. I think it's
- 1:29:57Speaker 2: might need to be more than Stafford May Darnold, Jonathan Taylor,
- 1:30:01Speaker 2: like Philly's lingering. There's something about that team that feels
- 1:30:05Speaker 2: a little off to me that like isn't the same
- 1:30:06Speaker 2: as the last couple of years.
- 1:30:09Speaker 1: Detroit's been better after a slow start.
- 1:30:12Speaker 4: You know.
- 1:30:13Speaker 1: I like Tampa if they can get healthy. I guess
- 1:30:14Speaker 1: the Rams are good, but I don't know. There's something
- 1:30:17Speaker 1: about they're not just winning. They're like they've won some
- 1:30:20Speaker 1: really intense close games. They've blown some teams out. They're
- 1:30:22Speaker 1: winning every which way again subject to change. I I
- 1:30:26Speaker 1: I do like the Seattle team though, Okay, let's talk
- 1:30:29Speaker 1: a little bit. And I said that we're doing this
- 1:30:30Speaker 1: instead of draft order, right, you wanted this at the
- 1:30:33Speaker 1: beginning of the show. I gave it to you, all right,
- 1:30:36Speaker 1: So there you go. Everybody can give me on Sunday.
- 1:30:39Speaker 1: With all these great games you have the great Cup
- 1:30:42Speaker 1: Montreal Aloette, I.
- 1:30:43Speaker 2: Haven't actually more relevant than that. I'll get to here
- 1:30:46Speaker 2: in a second. Let's talk a little bit of Jets up.
- 1:30:50Speaker 1: Than that.
- 1:30:51Speaker 2: This one is down near the bottom of relevancy. I'm
- 1:30:54Speaker 2: not gonna lie, but let's let's talk a little bit
- 1:30:57Speaker 2: of Jets before we run out of time. So basically,
- 1:30:59Speaker 2: this is one of those games, you know, just big picture,
- 1:31:02Speaker 2: it's a sneaky, don't get beat by the schedule game,
- 1:31:06Speaker 2: right you've played this will be your eleventh game in
- 1:31:08Speaker 2: a row without a buye. It's a short week. You
- 1:31:11Speaker 2: played on the road in a steamy, hot, rainy game
- 1:31:15Speaker 2: down in Tampa. That was a tough game, physical game
- 1:31:17Speaker 2: against a good team. Coming back on a short week,
- 1:31:21Speaker 2: the Jets have a it's kind of like the interim
- 1:31:24Speaker 2: head coach bump. Like you trading saw us getting Quinn Williams.
- 1:31:28Speaker 2: Everybody just assumes that they're gonna fall apart. They probably
- 1:31:31Speaker 2: will eventually, but like for a short term bump. Sometimes
- 1:31:35Speaker 2: that the power friendship comes together, and like who knows,
- 1:31:39Speaker 2: like where those guys, good locker room guys, were they bad?
- 1:31:42Speaker 2: Quinn Williams seemed really unhappy in New York for a while,
- 1:31:46Speaker 2: Like you just don't know what exactly was going on
- 1:31:50Speaker 2: behind the scenes that led to those trades. So for one,
- 1:31:54Speaker 2: let's call it two to three weeks, I think you
- 1:31:57Speaker 2: can get a little bit of a bump, well in
- 1:31:59Speaker 2: a row, one, two in a row. So there's that
- 1:32:03Speaker 2: whole angle. Like if you want to go like superficial
- 1:32:07Speaker 2: power of friendship, you know, non tangible things, I would
- 1:32:10Speaker 2: say that that's you know, where we're at in terms
- 1:32:13Speaker 2: of the way is that the Jets can actually beat you,
- 1:32:16Speaker 2: like between the lines on Thursday Night. I think there's
- 1:32:19Speaker 2: a couple of things that stand out to me. Their
- 1:32:22Speaker 2: run game. Their run game offensively is very explosive. It's
- 1:32:28Speaker 2: not it's weird, like they're not very consistent. It's kind
- 1:32:32Speaker 2: of like last week for the Patriots, where it's like
- 1:32:34Speaker 2: two big runs often skew all their numbers. But Brees
- 1:32:39Speaker 2: Hall is an explosive back. I think he's third in
- 1:32:41Speaker 2: the league right now an explosive run rate. They are
- 1:32:43Speaker 2: as a team third in the league and an explosive
- 1:32:45Speaker 2: run rate. I think he has the third most explosive runs.
- 1:32:48Speaker 2: It's only like behind like Taylor and one other guy.
- 1:32:51Speaker 2: So he's a big play threat out of the backfield.
- 1:32:55Speaker 2: We obviously know what Justin Fields can do with the
- 1:32:58Speaker 2: design quarterback run that element of it. On a short week.
- 1:33:03Speaker 2: It's a physical team up front with the Jets. They
- 1:33:06Speaker 2: can hit big plays in the run game. They can
- 1:33:09Speaker 2: run it thirty three times and kind of control clock
- 1:33:11Speaker 2: like they did against Cleveland. And then you also it's
- 1:33:14Speaker 2: hard on a short week to prepare for a non
- 1:33:18Speaker 2: traditional run team like this is not a team that's
- 1:33:22Speaker 2: just gonna put the quarterback under center and turn around
- 1:33:25Speaker 2: and hand the ball off. That's easy. Like you know
- 1:33:27Speaker 2: what's coming at you. This is option. It's like he's
- 1:33:30Speaker 2: gonna be in the gun. He's gonna have you read
- 1:33:32Speaker 2: option plays. It's gonna be you know, tackle trap, it's
- 1:33:35Speaker 2: gonna be zone read, it's gonna be RPO, it's gonna
- 1:33:37Speaker 2: be Justin Fields is trying to run all over this
- 1:33:40Speaker 2: field tomorrow night. And back in twenty twenty two when
- 1:33:44Speaker 2: Chicago came here with Justin Fields, we saw that it
- 1:33:47Speaker 2: can be effective if you let it happen. So this
- 1:33:49Speaker 2: is one of those games that's a little bit of
- 1:33:51Speaker 2: a culture game from a short week perspective. But on
- 1:33:54Speaker 2: the field, I think the biggest thing that stands out
- 1:33:56Speaker 2: to me about the Jets, other than the special teams,
- 1:33:58Speaker 2: which we'll get to in a second, is can they
- 1:34:02Speaker 2: come into this game and just justin fields goes twenty
- 1:34:06Speaker 2: twenty two Chicago Bears and just runs all over the place.
- 1:34:09Speaker 1: Yeah, well, if you look at I mean, he had
- 1:34:11Speaker 1: some receivers in that Bears game that you had to,
- 1:34:13Speaker 1: you know, keep on you to be honest about. Yeah,
- 1:34:17Speaker 1: with Garrett Wilson out their team leader, I forget which
- 1:34:24Speaker 1: way it is, but the next closest guys to Garrett
- 1:34:26Speaker 1: Wilson among wide receivers, I think it's Tyler Johnson has
- 1:34:29Speaker 1: the next most catches with eleven. Yeah, and Josh Reynolds
- 1:34:33Speaker 1: has the next most yards of one hundred and eighty.
- 1:34:34Speaker 1: I might have gotten that backwards, but eight in the
- 1:34:37Speaker 1: box kind of game, right, And they did. They did
- 1:34:39Speaker 1: get ad Mitchell, who we both liked in the draft.
- 1:34:42Speaker 1: They didn't get him at the trade deadline, so that's
- 1:34:43Speaker 1: a factor. But yeah, we saw teams us to the
- 1:34:47Speaker 1: Patriots in the early two thousands. You put one corner
- 1:34:50Speaker 1: out there, you put one corner out there, you put
- 1:34:52Speaker 1: one safety deep, and then you dare him to run
- 1:34:55Speaker 1: into the loaded box, or you dare him to try
- 1:34:57Speaker 1: to take a shot with the with the black wide
- 1:35:00Speaker 1: receiver Talwn they had. Now, Mason Taylor hasn't been bad,
- 1:35:03Speaker 1: and we know they're struggle against tight ends. That's the
- 1:35:04Speaker 1: guy worry about the pass game. You got to keep
- 1:35:06Speaker 1: him on as he's a rookie, you got to keep
- 1:35:08Speaker 1: him on us. But I think you just load the box.
- 1:35:10Speaker 1: If Justin Field's throwing the ball twenty twenty five times
- 1:35:13Speaker 1: in this game, you're in good position for the Patriots.
- 1:35:15Speaker 2: Yeah. So he only threw dropped back sixteen times, only
- 1:35:17Speaker 2: threw it eleven, he scrambled five times, or maybe there's
- 1:35:20Speaker 2: a throwaway in there or something like that. But that's
- 1:35:23Speaker 2: the way they beat you. They beat you with thirty
- 1:35:25Speaker 2: five runs, you know, twenty five by Brisall five to
- 1:35:29Speaker 2: ten by Justin Fields, and it's just everybody's just running
- 1:35:32Speaker 2: all over the place. That's the formula for the Jets.
- 1:35:35Speaker 2: The other part of that formula for the Jets is
- 1:35:37Speaker 2: obviously what they do on special teams. I think Mike
- 1:35:40Speaker 2: Rabel called their return unit's sensational. Yes, yea, it is
- 1:35:43Speaker 2: the word that he used. They had two special teams
- 1:35:46Speaker 2: return touchdowns last week against the Browns, one kickoff one
- 1:35:50Speaker 2: punt return touchdown. They're the number one team in the
- 1:35:52Speaker 2: league in DVOA on special teams, the best special teams
- 1:35:55Speaker 2: unit in football. So that's again and part of it, right,
- 1:35:59Speaker 2: if you run ball well, you get a big return
- 1:36:02Speaker 2: or two, you flip the field a little bit, and
- 1:36:04Speaker 2: now all of a sudden, you have a ballgame on
- 1:36:06Speaker 2: your hands. That's another angle of it. You're the special
- 1:36:09Speaker 2: teams guys. So I'm sure you know plenty about the
- 1:36:11Speaker 2: Jets special teams.
- 1:36:13Speaker 1: Yeah, I mean, it's they have a couple of different ways.
- 1:36:15Speaker 1: They can beat you with their fast that's the big thing.
- 1:36:17Speaker 1: They're fast. You really don't You're not going to chase
- 1:36:19Speaker 1: him down. If they get through the initial line, you're
- 1:36:22Speaker 1: not gonna be able to run them down. So you
- 1:36:23Speaker 1: got you got to be solid, you got to build
- 1:36:25Speaker 1: that wall.
- 1:36:25Speaker 2: Yeah, a good, really good special teams unit. Defensively, I
- 1:36:29Speaker 2: wanted to talk a little bit about this from this
- 1:36:32Speaker 2: Bucks game, and now we can kind of segue it
- 1:36:34Speaker 2: into this Jets game. So Jets play a lot of
- 1:36:36Speaker 2: man coverage. That's Aaron Glenn. He's an aggressive defensive coordinator,
- 1:36:40Speaker 2: defensive mind. Now they play the sixth highest rate of
- 1:36:44Speaker 2: man coverage in the league. They played the highest rate
- 1:36:46Speaker 2: of pressman coverage in the NFL, and that has not
- 1:36:49Speaker 2: changed with or without Sas Gardner. You know, they've played
- 1:36:52Speaker 2: two games now because he didn't play the Bengals game.
- 1:36:54Speaker 2: He had a concussion sauce, so it's two games in
- 1:36:57Speaker 2: a row now. They're still playing a ton of man
- 1:36:59Speaker 2: to man. There are man to man defense. The Bucks
- 1:37:03Speaker 2: ran a lot of drop eight coverage against Drake May
- 1:37:07Speaker 2: you know, three man rush, quarterback spy coverage behind it,
- 1:37:11Speaker 2: man to man. Usually it gave the Patriots some problems.
- 1:37:14Speaker 2: They only had one successful play against it, and it
- 1:37:16Speaker 2: was the circus play to Matt Collins was the only
- 1:37:19Speaker 2: successful play the Patriots made against Drop eight. So does
- 1:37:23Speaker 2: not usually Glenn's m O. He's usually a man blitz guy.
- 1:37:26Speaker 2: He's gonna, you know, bring five guys blitz the quarterback.
- 1:37:29Speaker 2: You could do it that way too. You know, it's
- 1:37:31Speaker 2: always about gaps. So Yeah, there's six gaps on the
- 1:37:34Speaker 2: line of scrimage. If you put five rushers in five
- 1:37:37Speaker 2: of the six gaps in theory, then you can keep
- 1:37:40Speaker 2: him in the pocket. So you could do it that
- 1:37:42Speaker 2: way playing man coverage behind it, or they could man
- 1:37:46Speaker 2: up and then put a spy on Drake May And
- 1:37:48Speaker 2: I think we're gonna see I'm interested to watch this game.
- 1:37:52Speaker 2: Is this sort of the blueprint that everybody goes after is,
- 1:37:57Speaker 2: let's we can't blitz them because too good against the blitz.
- 1:38:01Speaker 2: So instead of blitzing him, we're actually just not gonna
- 1:38:04Speaker 2: rush him. We're gonna just rush three guys. We're gonna
- 1:38:07Speaker 2: drop aight into coverage. One of them will probably be
- 1:38:09Speaker 2: a spy, and we're just gonna make him sit there
- 1:38:11Speaker 2: in the pocket and consistently make throws. I would have
- 1:38:15Speaker 2: to venture to say that the Jets are gonna watch
- 1:38:17Speaker 2: that Bucks tape and if they're worth their salt, defensively,
- 1:38:20Speaker 2: that's what they're gonna try to do in this game.
- 1:38:22Speaker 1: Yeah, and you'd like to counter that with the run,
- 1:38:25Speaker 1: but they're so banged up at running back. How's that
- 1:38:28Speaker 1: gonna work? Yeah, maybe there's some more screens, some more
- 1:38:31Speaker 1: quick hitter stuff. In this game, RPOs get guys going
- 1:38:34Speaker 1: behind the line of scrimmage.
- 1:38:36Speaker 2: The biggest thing with drop eight, I would say combination
- 1:38:40Speaker 2: of you know, obviously you can run the ball, but
- 1:38:42Speaker 2: usually teams only play it on like obvious passing situations.
- 1:38:46Speaker 1: Well they had was last week or the Falcons game
- 1:38:49Speaker 1: that they had the third and nine that they ran
- 1:38:51Speaker 1: for the first down.
- 1:38:52Speaker 2: Yeah, you could do that. Last week is toss play
- 1:38:54Speaker 2: to Henders. It almost broke that one too. You could
- 1:38:58Speaker 2: do that theory.
- 1:39:01Speaker 1: I just liken't think they're afraid to do that.
- 1:39:03Speaker 2: The spy in general, you know, against the Browns, they
- 1:39:06Speaker 2: spied him a little bit. He threw a pick to
- 1:39:08Speaker 2: the spy.
- 1:39:08Speaker 1: Yeah, Carson Sweschinger.
- 1:39:10Speaker 2: Was spying him and he threw the ball right to him.
- 1:39:12Speaker 2: Last week, I thought the Bucks had some successful downs
- 1:39:15Speaker 2: of like three man rush plus spy on Drake May
- 1:39:18Speaker 2: So I think that's gonna be it. Now, what how
- 1:39:21Speaker 2: do you counter that other than you know, the run game. Well,
- 1:39:24Speaker 2: you got to remember that if they're dropping guys off
- 1:39:27Speaker 2: the line of scrimmage into coverage, you have like outside
- 1:39:30Speaker 2: linebacker defensive end types that are now covering in space.
- 1:39:34Speaker 2: So last week. You know, the Bucks were dropping Anthony
- 1:39:37Speaker 2: Nelson their defensive end. If you see ninety eight in coverage,
- 1:39:41Speaker 2: like that's a guy. Yeah, the guy's wearing a number
- 1:39:45Speaker 2: in the nineties and he's dropping in coverage, it's probably
- 1:39:47Speaker 2: a good idea to throw the ball at him.
- 1:39:50Speaker 1: So like that's forget Trey Flowers man in upon Bell
- 1:39:53Speaker 1: on third down.
- 1:39:54Speaker 2: Yeah, So like short zones, you know, picking apart the
- 1:39:57Speaker 2: short zones and things like that can be helpful. You
- 1:40:00Speaker 2: mentioned the running backs. I want to talk a little
- 1:40:03Speaker 2: bit about that, and and tight end as well. With
- 1:40:06Speaker 2: Austin Hooper's concussion, who do you think plays? What do
- 1:40:10Speaker 2: you think they do? They're obviously gonna have Henderson, They'll
- 1:40:13Speaker 2: probably have de Ernest Johnson up from the practice squad,
- 1:40:16Speaker 2: So then it's just a matter of can either Remondre
- 1:40:19Speaker 2: or Terrell Jennings.
- 1:40:20Speaker 1: Go in right, So if you can have one of
- 1:40:22Speaker 1: those guys go, you need three backs, especially against this team,
- 1:40:25Speaker 1: you need three backs. So if one of those guys
- 1:40:28Speaker 1: can go, then you have Steven Center. And they were
- 1:40:31Speaker 1: both limited yesterday. Trayvon Henderson's a full participant, they're both limited,
- 1:40:34Speaker 1: so they feel more fifty to fifty yep. You know,
- 1:40:37Speaker 1: then I think maybe CJ. Dupree, and we've talked about
- 1:40:41Speaker 1: him being a blocking tight end and he gives you
- 1:40:43Speaker 1: something else on the line of scrimmage. Now, maybe there's
- 1:40:44Speaker 1: also just some more of Jack west Over playing traditional
- 1:40:47Speaker 1: tight end, especially if Tom is going to take his
- 1:40:49Speaker 1: job as full back. Where it gets complicated is if
- 1:40:53Speaker 1: both Jennings and Steven center out.
- 1:40:55Speaker 2: Right, they might have to ride with two running backs
- 1:40:57Speaker 2: for a game.
- 1:40:58Speaker 3: Do you do that?
- 1:40:59Speaker 1: Do you call to running backs off the practice squad
- 1:41:01Speaker 1: and ride with one tight end?
- 1:41:02Speaker 2: Right?
- 1:41:03Speaker 1: Do they maybe make a move at the back of
- 1:41:04Speaker 1: the roster for this game where they signed somebody off
- 1:41:08Speaker 1: the practice squad.
- 1:41:10Speaker 2: They could sign Deeranis Johnson because he's going to be
- 1:41:13Speaker 2: out of elevations, so if they wanted to, they could
- 1:41:17Speaker 2: cut a player that hasn't been active. I don't know,
- 1:41:19Speaker 2: Eric Gregory kden Rawll is something like that, who is
- 1:41:22Speaker 2: probably going to make it back to the practice squad
- 1:41:24Speaker 2: once they clear waivers. So you could do that and
- 1:41:27Speaker 2: then like sign Deeranis Johnson to the fifty three man roster,
- 1:41:30Speaker 2: and then you have you basically have created three practice
- 1:41:33Speaker 2: squad elevations by doing that.
- 1:41:35Speaker 1: That's if both those running backs can't go, Jennings and
- 1:41:38Speaker 1: Stevenson can't go, then it gets a little more complicated.
- 1:41:41Speaker 2: Yeah, so running back, I think that that's possible. Tight
- 1:41:44Speaker 2: end I think is interesting. C. J. Dupree has been
- 1:41:47Speaker 2: here since training camp. He's been here all season. Is
- 1:41:50Speaker 2: an undrafted rookie signing. It's been here since May. So
- 1:41:55Speaker 2: in theory, you would think that he has the edge
- 1:41:57Speaker 2: in terms of maybe getting elevated. They do have another
- 1:42:00Speaker 2: practice squad tight any him.
- 1:42:01Speaker 1: No, they can't elevate. It's he's the international guy.
- 1:42:04Speaker 2: Okay, so they'd have to sign him to the roster. Yeah,
- 1:42:06Speaker 2: got it. Okay, so they can only out elevate dupre Uh.
- 1:42:10Speaker 2: He could be elevated. They could go six o line
- 1:42:13Speaker 2: in this game, like they could use Vederian low Er
- 1:42:15Speaker 2: Marcus Bryan as an eligible tackle.
- 1:42:18Speaker 1: Well, they could do both, like you might. You know,
- 1:42:20Speaker 1: you might need dupre up just have the depth. I
- 1:42:23Speaker 1: don't mind having Dupree up because he's a good blocker.
- 1:42:25Speaker 1: And if the one thing that you're going to miss
- 1:42:27Speaker 1: the most from Austin Hooper, it's his inline blocking, and
- 1:42:30Speaker 1: that's what Duprees also.
- 1:42:32Speaker 2: Is that's his m O.
- 1:42:33Speaker 1: I've seen some people bring up, you know, do you
- 1:42:35Speaker 1: go essentially four wide receiver and use Mac Collins as
- 1:42:38Speaker 1: a tight end, which.
- 1:42:39Speaker 2: But if but if Booty doesn't, so I guess Kyle
- 1:42:41Speaker 2: Williams would play right on the other.
- 1:42:43Speaker 1: But I think you can do that in some situations.
- 1:42:45Speaker 1: I think we maybe see a little more four wide receiver.
- 1:42:48Speaker 2: Yeah, but.
- 1:42:51Speaker 1: Also or you know, three wide receiver that's missing.
- 1:42:55Speaker 2: Is Matt Collins a better blocker than Hunter Henry?
- 1:43:00Speaker 1: So I meant it like four wide receivers probably a
- 1:43:02Speaker 1: bad way to put it. You meant through eleven personnel
- 1:43:05Speaker 1: where it's kind of twelve personnel. Yeah, or if like
- 1:43:10Speaker 1: somebody asks, like what if Henry gets hurt?
- 1:43:11Speaker 3: What do you do?
- 1:43:11Speaker 1: But like there's all you don't want to take Mac
- 1:43:13Speaker 1: Collins out of his normal responsibilities too much because he's
- 1:43:16Speaker 1: been good in those. So I do think you need
- 1:43:17Speaker 1: you just need another body at the position. And Duprez
- 1:43:20Speaker 1: pretty much the only guy that can do that.
- 1:43:22Speaker 2: Yeah. Yeah, we have a lot of emails about you know,
- 1:43:27Speaker 2: kind of resting guys and maybe you know, given some opportunities,
- 1:43:31Speaker 2: some guys that haven't been active, you know, or Brandon Swinson.
- 1:43:35Speaker 2: I know a lot of people want to see him.
- 1:43:37Speaker 2: I still think and you know, again, this is maybe
- 1:43:40Speaker 2: my little stitious side coming out. Yeah, Like I don't like,
- 1:43:43Speaker 2: let's not get cute, all right, Like this is a
- 1:43:45Speaker 2: game that they should easily win. Is a bad Jets team,
- 1:43:49Speaker 2: they should roll. Like I'm not saying play guys that
- 1:43:52Speaker 2: are hurt obviously, right, but if guys are healthy, then
- 1:43:55Speaker 2: like they should play.
- 1:43:56Speaker 1: No, this is not Week eighteen. You've already locked up
- 1:43:59Speaker 1: a prece.
- 1:44:00Speaker 2: Agreed, so that that's where all those things are at.
- 1:44:04Speaker 2: A couple of emails here before we wrap it up,
- 1:44:07Speaker 2: we got five more minutes. This is an email from
- 1:44:12Speaker 2: Okay Anakin on Tato Wine. Nice joke. I like it
- 1:44:16Speaker 2: is Carlton Davis the most disappointing free agent pickup this season.
- 1:44:19Speaker 2: I want to make a judgment call, but it seems
- 1:44:22Speaker 2: like he's getting burned week after week, especially in the
- 1:44:25Speaker 2: end zone. So I actually thought Carlton Davis was pretty
- 1:44:28Speaker 2: good in this game. The touchdown that he gave up
- 1:44:30Speaker 2: was on an extended man coverage rep where Baker Mayfield
- 1:44:33Speaker 2: like five or six seconds, you know, and extends the
- 1:44:37Speaker 2: play outside the pocket that has two weeks in a
- 1:44:41Speaker 2: row come up. You know, he gave up a twenty
- 1:44:42Speaker 2: five yarder to Drake London on an extended man coverage
- 1:44:45Speaker 2: rep so you could get on Carlton Davis. A lot
- 1:44:47Speaker 2: of people getting on Carlton Davis. I come back to
- 1:44:50Speaker 2: the same thing I said the other I think it
- 1:44:52Speaker 2: was last week with Carlton Davis. It all depends on
- 1:44:55Speaker 2: what your expectations were of Carlton Davis coming in. If
- 1:44:58Speaker 2: you thought that they were getting too number one corners,
- 1:45:02Speaker 2: then maybe it's our fault. Maybe we hyped up Carlton
- 1:45:05Speaker 2: Davis a little bit too much. Maybe it's your fault
- 1:45:08Speaker 2: for thinking that I'll take some of the responsibility. Maybe
- 1:45:11Speaker 2: it was us, Maybe we hyped it up a little
- 1:45:12Speaker 2: bit too much. He is a really good number two corner,
- 1:45:15Speaker 2: which is what he's being asked to do here. Number
- 1:45:18Speaker 2: two corners should not be expected to go out there
- 1:45:20Speaker 2: and shut down their assignment.
- 1:45:22Speaker 1: Everything, especially when you're opposite a guy like Gonzalez. I
- 1:45:24Speaker 1: think people are annoyed with the volume and how much
- 1:45:26Speaker 1: he's being targeted. It's because Gonzalez is on the other side. Yeah,
- 1:45:30Speaker 1: and teams don't want to throw him. So, you know,
- 1:45:33Speaker 1: I think he's been fine. He's definitely been a little
- 1:45:35Speaker 1: underwhelming compared to what I expected about that he's been
- 1:45:37Speaker 1: a bad player.
- 1:45:39Speaker 2: No, I feel pretty okay about where he's He's been fine,
- 1:45:42Speaker 2: Like there's been some ups and downs, but I'm not,
- 1:45:45Speaker 2: you know, totally mad about it. This is a question
- 1:45:49Speaker 2: from Caid. He asked, are you concerned about the fact
- 1:45:53Speaker 2: that we have the Patriots have a negative DVOA despite
- 1:45:57Speaker 2: being eaten too. So the DVOA, you know, obvious see
- 1:46:00Speaker 2: Aaron Shatz's stat now, you know on FT and fantasy.
- 1:46:04Speaker 2: It's just like a catch all efficiency metric, kind of
- 1:46:07Speaker 2: like your team's like war essentially like in baseball DVA.
- 1:46:13Speaker 2: I like the stat. I've always liked the stat. I
- 1:46:16Speaker 2: particularly like the stat because it's schedule adjusted, so it's
- 1:46:19Speaker 2: opponent adjusted based off of who you've played. The Patriots,
- 1:46:23Speaker 2: I think, are in overall team DVA are like seventeenth
- 1:46:26Speaker 2: right now or something like that, so the middle of
- 1:46:28Speaker 2: the pack. They aren't great. This to me is probably
- 1:46:32Speaker 2: a product of DVA. I think they had a cupcake schedule,
- 1:46:36Speaker 2: so a lot of their impressive wins, like you know,
- 1:46:39Speaker 2: Carolina Tennessee Cleveland. They're not going to get huge bumps
- 1:46:45Speaker 2: out of those games.
- 1:46:46Speaker 1: Their schedules not just easy, Like it's so much in
- 1:46:49Speaker 1: terms of strength to schedule in terms of opponent's record,
- 1:46:51Speaker 1: and I'm sure DVA takes an account more than that. Yeah,
- 1:46:56Speaker 1: it's like pretty far down compared to the next closest team.
- 1:46:59Speaker 1: That like just be a case of an analytic being broken.
- 1:47:02Speaker 1: I think, No, I'm not worried about the Patriots. I
- 1:47:05Speaker 1: did not know it was negative until right now.
- 1:47:07Speaker 2: Yeah, and I figured the only reason why I'm not
- 1:47:10Speaker 2: worried about it, and I'm not worried about any of
- 1:47:13Speaker 2: these things. Yeah, I was right seventeenth. Uh is Drake May?
- 1:47:17Speaker 1: Like what's Drake May's DV.
- 1:47:18Speaker 2: If this was twenty twenty one and it was Mac
- 1:47:21Speaker 2: Jones with a good defense and propping it up and
- 1:47:24Speaker 2: he's kind of just a system quarterback, I would say
- 1:47:27Speaker 2: this is probably a little bit of a paper tiger.
- 1:47:29Speaker 2: The fact that you have an MVP quarterback pulling the
- 1:47:32Speaker 2: trigger makes you feel a lot better about where they are.
- 1:47:36Speaker 2: I think it doesn't really do it, Like that's more
- 1:47:40Speaker 2: of a team efficiency metric. They have defense.
- 1:47:44Speaker 1: You know, what's the passing devo good like tenth or something.
- 1:47:49Speaker 1: I would say, that's yeah, So d y A R
- 1:47:52Speaker 1: is like yards. We're doing replacement now great asking.
- 1:47:57Speaker 2: That's that's a difference stat All right, here's the last
- 1:48:00Speaker 2: one I wanted to get to.
- 1:48:02Speaker 1: This is what I said, Uh, more relevant than the
- 1:48:05Speaker 1: great who do you got? More?
- 1:48:07Speaker 4: So?
- 1:48:07Speaker 8: Uh?
- 1:48:08Speaker 2: This is from my former college roommate. Okay, he asks,
- 1:48:13Speaker 2: what is your score prediction for the Cordica Jug this
- 1:48:16Speaker 2: Saturday this week? So both Alex and I are proud
- 1:48:19Speaker 2: in the college alums and the cord Could Jug is
- 1:48:22Speaker 2: Ithaca's big rivalry game. It's Ithaca versus Cornell. Called it Cortland,
- 1:48:28Speaker 2: I said, Cornell Courtland, Ithaca versus Courtland, the Cordica Jug.
- 1:48:32Speaker 2: It called that game in fifteen, very like historically big
- 1:48:36Speaker 2: game in the D three college football landscape. I'm also
- 1:48:39Speaker 2: need them kid. I grew up in need h Them,
- 1:48:41Speaker 2: So Needham Wellesley and Itha Cortland is like those are
- 1:48:45Speaker 2: two of the bigger, like small rivals.
- 1:48:47Speaker 1: They called Cordica the biggest little game in the nation.
- 1:48:50Speaker 1: That's that's the nickname for the rivalry.
- 1:48:52Speaker 2: So who do you have? Don't look it up? Don't
- 1:48:54Speaker 2: look at like where they're at you this is.
- 1:48:58Speaker 1: I was trying to find which year I I called
- 1:49:00Speaker 1: the game. If you want to see still to this
- 1:49:02Speaker 1: day of the wildest ending I've ever seen a football game.
- 1:49:04Speaker 1: Look up twenty fourteen quarterca ending. You know I know
- 1:49:07Speaker 1: that is, to this day the wildest ending I've ever seen.
- 1:49:09Speaker 1: Shutout of any longo on the call, I'm gonna go, ah,
- 1:49:17Speaker 1: you're thinking about thinking about it. Yeah, I'm thinking whether
- 1:49:20Speaker 1: or not I want to pick Courtland. I think pick Ireland.
- 1:49:22Speaker 2: I'm going I see all right, I'm gonna take Courtland.
- 1:49:24Speaker 2: I'm going to take the hometown team. I will never
- 1:49:27Speaker 2: forget fourteen. We don't have a ton of time here,
- 1:49:30Speaker 2: but twenty fourteen really quickly. H the opponent was lining
- 1:49:35Speaker 2: up to kick a so.
- 1:49:36Speaker 1: On the Olympics.
- 1:49:37Speaker 2: I was next your points.
- 1:49:38Speaker 1: I was right now.
- 1:49:39Speaker 2: Now we only have like ten second it Thick.
- 1:49:41Speaker 1: Is up by three. They kicked the ball off with
- 1:49:42Speaker 1: about a minute a half to go.
- 1:49:44Speaker 2: No, no, I'm talking about just the one play.
- 1:49:46Speaker 1: Well, no Courtland comes down the field. They're setting up
- 1:49:48Speaker 1: to kick the game time field goal, seventeen seconds left,
- 1:49:51Speaker 1: no timeouts. Holder doesn't come on the field. Backup holder
- 1:49:53Speaker 1: runs on botches the snap, peels away from two defenders,
- 1:49:57Speaker 1: hits the third string right tackle on the back one
- 1:50:00Speaker 1: of the end zone for the game winning touchdown.
- 1:50:01Speaker 2: Game. Yeah, and you seen me in the replay right there.
- 1:50:04Speaker 2: Like a muffed extra point or a muff field goal
- 1:50:07Speaker 2: situation turns into a game winning touchdown. They also, I
- 1:50:10Speaker 2: think it was twenty fifteen, my graduation year, they gave
- 1:50:14Speaker 2: up like a hail Mary bomb to lose the game.
- 1:50:17Speaker 1: No, that was the year before the crazy one. Those
- 1:50:20Speaker 1: twenty thirteen.
- 1:50:21Speaker 2: Okay, it was one of the years I was in college.
- 1:50:23Speaker 2: They've had. They had some big game.
- 1:50:25Speaker 1: They were they were three years in a row, the
- 1:50:26Speaker 1: three years that I called the game, and then one
- 1:50:28Speaker 1: year they lost on like a ridiculous safety.
