- 0:44Speaker 2: Kilowatts of power. What's up and welcome to Movie Meltdown.
- 1:13Speaker 5: I'm Brian.
- 1:13Speaker 6: I'm Fred.
- 1:14Speaker 7: I'm Ben.
- 1:40Speaker 8: And we are back for another exciting session of the
- 1:43Speaker 8: Caffeinated Movie Geek.
- 1:44Speaker 7: Cappuccino on my butt. I still drink coffee.
- 1:47Speaker 4: The last fucking thing you need is another cup of coffee.
- 1:52Speaker 9: It's time for the Caffeinated Movie Geek.
- 1:55Speaker 8: It has been months now. It has been a long time.
- 1:58Speaker 8: I've had several people on the show tell me they're jonesing.
- 2:02Speaker 8: They need a fix of not so much the coffee
- 2:04Speaker 8: as the geeking out and sitting around together, so... We
- 2:07Speaker 8: are finally back for another hanging out at the coffee
- 2:10Speaker 8: shop kind of episode. So we are coming to you
- 2:13Speaker 8: live via digital recording from Nancy's Bagel Grounds. So with that,
- 2:17Speaker 8: we can go ahead and bring in our special guest,
- 2:19Speaker 8: which if you've, well, if you were listening earlier this year,
- 2:22Speaker 8: you've met him. If you were listening last week, I'm sorry.
- 2:25Speaker 8: It was a train wreck. Regardless, we brought back, that
- 2:28Speaker 8: was not their fault. We were just in the middle
- 2:30Speaker 8: of insanity last weekend. So now we would like to
- 2:33Speaker 8: welcome Scooter Downey and Rose Cyrano back. to a slightly
- 2:37Speaker 8: more civilized version of the show.
- 2:39Speaker 5: Thank you.
- 2:40Speaker 8: Thank you.
- 2:41Speaker 6: Thank you.
- 2:43Speaker 8: So, as usual, we like to throw this to the
- 2:47Speaker 8: unsuspecting victim. Rose, I ask you, what blend of coffee
- 2:51Speaker 8: are we drinking?
- 2:52Speaker 10: My guess was bubbly, squirty, go-go juice, something like that.
- 2:57Speaker 10: But the truth is, today our coffee is sponsored by Thundermuck.
- 3:02Speaker 8: Thundermuck. Thundermuck.
- 3:04Speaker 5: That sounds like mucky mud, but yay.
- 3:07Speaker 8: Yeah, I told you, you should drink a whole lot
- 3:09Speaker 8: of it and see what happens. Because, you know, knowing
- 3:12Speaker 8: how you normally operate, I really want to see what
- 3:14Speaker 8: happens when you're on a couple of pots of coffee.
- 3:17Speaker 7: I don't drink any caffeine.
- 3:18Speaker 8: There's something wrong there.
- 3:22Speaker 11: She doesn't need it.
- 3:23Speaker 10: Our convention episode where I'm, like, talking, like, 200 miles
- 3:27Speaker 10: a minute.
- 3:28Speaker 5: There's so much going on.
- 3:30Speaker 8: There really was.
- 3:31Speaker 5: It's like a girl holding a dead teddy bear. Like,
- 3:34Speaker 5: I can't even go... I can't even explain it.
- 3:37Speaker 8: Just, you can live the wonder of it on the
- 3:40Speaker 8: internet there, so.
- 3:42Speaker 8: It's a magical experience. Oh, and do you want to... Yeah,
- 3:47Speaker 8: I was going to go into this before. Do you
- 3:49Speaker 8: want to tell Fred... She saw the t-shirt sitting there,
- 3:52Speaker 8: and it wasn't so much that I had to explain
- 3:55Speaker 8: the babysitter part of the story as the who's John
- 3:58Speaker 8: Carpenter part of the story.
- 4:00Speaker 5: Oh my gosh, do I even remember? Was it from
- 4:02Speaker 5: the movie Halloween? Was that it?
- 4:04Speaker 8: Yeah, see, look. Some stuff's sticking up there. Look at that.
- 4:08Speaker 11: She'll be a geek before too long.
- 4:11Speaker 8: We're working on.
- 4:11Speaker 7: It, man.
- 4:12Speaker 12: I know.
- 4:12Speaker 5: By how many episodes do you think I'll be?
- 4:15Speaker 8: You're working on several now, so we'll see what we
- 4:18Speaker 8: can do.
- 4:18Speaker 5: We still have not seen Star Wars, though.
- 4:21Speaker 8: But your story, your epic tale of Star Wars, more
- 4:24Speaker 8: than makes.
- 4:25Speaker 9: Up for it, really.
- 4:26Speaker 10: So John Carpenter is in the movie Halloween.
- 4:33Speaker 8: In spirit? Yeah. Sort of.
- 4:37Speaker 5: Wait, wait, he's the director of it.
- 4:39Speaker 8: There we go.
- 4:40Speaker 6: Or writer, director.
- 4:41Speaker 5: Okay, there we go.
- 4:42Speaker 11: Someone goes out.
- 4:43Speaker 5: So basically when Brad was a little boy, they would
- 4:46Speaker 5: play Halloween a lot.
- 4:48Speaker 10: His babysitter would, or his parents would say, no, I'm
- 4:52Speaker 10: just kidding.
- 4:53Speaker 7: I don't remember.
- 4:55Speaker 8: Yeah, that's how it went.
- 4:58Speaker 10: And so you watched it a lot, his movies.
- 5:03Speaker 5: And so he became your babysitter. Is this a correction?
- 5:07Speaker 8: That's what you do.
- 5:08Speaker 9: You familiarize yourself with someone's work and By that process,
- 5:13Speaker 9: they become your babysitter.
- 5:17Speaker 8: See, a lot of people read the shirt as that, actually.
- 5:21Speaker 8: And I'm okay with that, as long as they're having
- 5:23Speaker 8: fun with that. Like, yeah, me too, he was mine.
- 5:25Speaker 9: A lot of people take it in that way that
- 5:29Speaker 9: they grew up watching horror movies, so in that sense,
- 5:32Speaker 9: John Carpenter was their babysitter. But the real story is
- 5:36Speaker 9: it's just something my mom always said. I don't really
- 5:40Speaker 9: remember him. But at some point, I've always wanted to
- 5:44Speaker 9: retire and then check all the stuff I know and
- 5:47Speaker 9: learned in college and see if any of it's still true.
- 5:50Speaker 9: But I started out by checking out my mom's story.
- 5:55Speaker 9: Is that true? And I look him up because, you know,
- 5:58Speaker 9: moms sometimes have a different version of reality than everyone
- 6:02Speaker 9: in the world. They just have things they say happened
- 6:06Speaker 9: and you go... No.
- 6:09Speaker 8: That's not how I remember it.
- 6:11Speaker 9: But that was something she said, and I looked up
- 6:15Speaker 9: his website, and he grew up in Bowling Green, Kentucky.
- 6:19Speaker 13: His parents taught at Western.
- 6:21Speaker 9: I grew up in Bowling Green. My parents taught at Western.
- 6:23Speaker 9: Mom's story is checking out.
- 6:26Speaker 13: And apparently his parents taught music.
- 6:31Speaker 9: And they were friends with my parents, and they would
- 6:33Speaker 9: ask them to come over and hang out, and they'd say, oh,
- 6:36Speaker 9: we don't have a sitter for the boys, me and
- 6:39Speaker 9: my brother. They'd say, John will watch the boys. And
- 6:43Speaker 9: that's so John Carpenter was my babysitter.
- 6:46Speaker 8: John will scar the boys.
- 6:47Speaker 9: Yeah, that's what she said. And it sounded pretty plausible
- 6:53Speaker 9: based on he grew up there. He was about the
- 6:56Speaker 9: right age. But she also had this little book that
- 6:59Speaker 9: he had made, like a hand-drawn Vincent Price on the cover.
- 7:03Speaker 9: It was all about horror movies. And it didn't have
- 7:07Speaker 9: the date on it, but it was talking about a
- 7:10Speaker 9: movie coming out in London.
- 7:12Speaker 13: And I looked it up, and he would.
- 7:14Speaker 9: Have been 17. And it was on one of the
- 7:17Speaker 9: old mimeograph things, the blue copy. And so, yeah, that
- 7:24Speaker 9: she had that, I thought, Yeah, okay.
- 7:27Speaker 13: And so I'm going with.
- 7:28Speaker 9: And it's kind of a cool thing to say because
- 7:30Speaker 9: his first film is most famous, really. Halloween was about
- 7:37Speaker 9: a babysitter.
- 7:38Speaker 8: The horror of being a babysitter.
- 7:40Speaker 9: Yeah, and so, I don't know, I guess.
- 7:44Speaker 8: so yeah his horrors inspired the movie his horrors of
- 7:47Speaker 8: being a babysitter was you and your brother probably.
- 7:50Speaker 4: I genuinely feel like there's some like butterfly effect there
- 7:53Speaker 4: like we would not have had the exact product of
- 7:56Speaker 4: like how like the chain of events like him babysitting
- 7:59Speaker 4: you like.
- 8:01Speaker 9: Oddly enough i was a demon child maybe.
- 8:06Speaker 14: He based michael myers on you i think so i
- 8:09Speaker 14: i That's.
- 8:09Speaker 7: A good idea.
- 8:10Speaker 9: And I was obsessed with horror movies when I was
- 8:13Speaker 9: a kid. Just absolutely obsessed. I can't compare my knowledge
- 8:17Speaker 9: of horror with any younger people who grew up with DVDs.
- 8:23Speaker 9: I don't know anything about it. But back then, you
- 8:29Speaker 9: could watch when it was on, and the afternoon horror movie,
- 8:34Speaker 9: you'd have the TV guide and you'd plan for it.
- 8:36Speaker 9: And if you were out somewhere and you couldn't be
- 8:38Speaker 9: there on your horror movie with Oh, it was just crushing.
- 8:41Speaker 9: It was just horrible.
- 8:43Speaker 8: This is a world that kids will never understand. Yeah,
- 8:46Speaker 8: it's really sad.
- 8:46Speaker 9: Yeah, because things were on, and then they were just,
- 8:49Speaker 9: you never knew if you'd see them again.
- 8:50Speaker 6: Sometimes, yeah.
- 8:51Speaker 9: It was like playing an eight-track tape. It might play
- 8:56Speaker 9: this time, but you may never hear it again.
- 8:59Speaker 7: You're like, oh, man. Your song gets cut off, you
- 9:01Speaker 7: have to flip it over.
- 9:04Speaker 8: Oh, yeah. Well, I just did that recently. I bought,
- 9:08Speaker 8: I mentioned this online. Because I've gotten, I'm like, oh,
- 9:10Speaker 8: I've got this new fancy Blu-ray player, and I've got
- 9:13Speaker 8: a new disc with 40 hours of exclusive stuff on it.
- 9:16Speaker 8: And what am I watching? A VHS tape I bought
- 9:18Speaker 8: yesterday secondhand.
- 9:20Speaker 14: Yeah.
- 9:21Speaker 8: So I'm putting it in, and I'm like, I got
- 9:23Speaker 8: it for pretty cheap. If I can get it to
- 9:24Speaker 8: play once, I got one shot. If it works, I'm
- 9:28Speaker 8: all good. Because you know it's going to, like, by
- 9:29Speaker 8: the time it rewinds, it's going to snap it anyway.
- 9:31Speaker 8: So they weren't really made to last forever. So I'm like,
- 9:34Speaker 8: all I've got to do is get through this thing
- 9:35Speaker 8: one time.
- 9:36Speaker 7: What was it exactly?
- 9:38Speaker 13: I watched Topaz.
- 9:40Speaker 11: What's that?
- 9:41Speaker 8: It's one of the later Hitchcocks. This is a good
- 9:45Speaker 8: entry into the geek activity. So we'll roll on into that.
- 9:49Speaker 8: Topaz is a later Hitchcock. It was those late 60s.
- 9:54Speaker 8: The last couple in the 70s are really different for him,
- 9:57Speaker 8: which I kind of like. Actually, I know some people
- 9:59Speaker 8: don't like those. but I really like Frenzy Frenzy's a
- 10:02Speaker 8: weird modern era of Hitchcock that seems like this weird
- 10:06Speaker 8: juxtaposition of you've got 70s mentality and suddenly he can
- 10:10Speaker 8: use nudity and cursing and you're not used to that
- 10:14Speaker 8: in Hitchcock movies so it's It's very strange seeing that.
- 10:17Speaker 8: So this was right before that. This was, like, late 60s,
- 10:20Speaker 8: I think. It's pretty much all about the Cold War.
- 10:24Speaker 8: It's one of the more slow-paced of his, I have
- 10:28Speaker 8: to say. It's pretty cool. It's, well, you know, it's Hitchcock.
- 10:32Speaker 8: I mean, the worst of his is world's better than
- 10:35Speaker 8: anybody else will ever do. It's good. It's just like
- 10:38Speaker 8: it's not knowing his, like, super high-end, like, tension thriller
- 10:42Speaker 8: kind of stuff. There's a few moments of that, but
- 10:44Speaker 8: there's a whole lot of, like, traveling the world and
- 10:48Speaker 8: going to Cuba and.
- 10:49Speaker 14: You know.
- 10:50Speaker 8: It's, yeah, it's interesting. Actually, do you remember the guy
- 10:56Speaker 8: from Animal House? Do you remember the dean that's always
- 11:00Speaker 8: yelling at him?
- 11:01Speaker 9: Yeah, yeah, yeah.
- 11:02Speaker 8: That's probably the most entertaining part is he is, like,
- 11:05Speaker 8: a head honcho in Cuba.
- 11:07Speaker 7: Yeah.
- 11:08Speaker 8: And he's got the full beard. He's got the little,
- 11:11Speaker 8: he's got the little green cap. Like he's just got
- 11:13Speaker 8: the official I'm Cuban outfit on and he's, he's really
- 11:18Speaker 8: good in it. Like again, I, we, we'd seen him,
- 11:20Speaker 8: I think, what was it he was in that we watched?
- 11:22Speaker 8: I think he's in Charlie Baric and a bunch of
- 11:25Speaker 8: other stuff that we went back and saw him doing
- 11:27Speaker 8: all these serious roles that I'm not used to him.
- 11:29Speaker 8: Cause he's still so like iconically animal house for the
- 11:33Speaker 8: rest of my life that watching him like a few
- 11:35Speaker 8: years before doing this really serious performance. And he's, he's
- 11:39Speaker 8: kind of, he's, he's the tension part. He's the one
- 11:42Speaker 8: that's sort of in power and, and when they get
- 11:43Speaker 8: in trouble, it's, it's kind of him that's, that's going to, uh,
- 11:46Speaker 8: going to come down on him. So he, he's really good.
- 11:49Speaker 8: He's probably the best thing to watch in it is,
- 11:50Speaker 8: is that performance. It's John.
- 11:53Speaker 7: Those character actors.
- 11:54Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 11:55Speaker 7: You know, that just make, have like the most memorable
- 11:58Speaker 7: parts of movies.
- 12:00Speaker 8: He's, yeah, he's really good. John Forsythe's in it. And like,
- 12:04Speaker 8: They always used to slap him on the front of
- 12:06Speaker 8: the box, so I really expected it to be all...
- 12:08Speaker 8: It's kind of odd. It's a weird setup. It's just
- 12:11Speaker 8: the layout of the movie is very strange, too, because
- 12:14Speaker 8: it sort of hands the movie off several times. It
- 12:18Speaker 8: sets it up in the beginning, and it's sort of
- 12:19Speaker 8: John Forsythe, and he's working for the government, and then
- 12:22Speaker 8: there's this French agent that's kind of helping our government,
- 12:26Speaker 8: and then it sort of hands the movie off to him,
- 12:27Speaker 8: and then he goes to Cuba, and we follow this
- 12:30Speaker 8: story about him and this girl that he's involved with
- 12:32Speaker 8: in Cuba... And then we start seeing the whole other
- 12:35Speaker 8: backstory there. And then it comes back and it gets
- 12:37Speaker 8: involved in this other guy. There's a weird part in
- 12:40Speaker 8: the middle where it goes with this other French guy
- 12:44Speaker 8: that goes on this little reconnaissance mission.
- 12:48Speaker 11: Too many French characters for my liking.
- 12:50Speaker 8: It's only a little while. Then it goes to Cuba.
- 12:53Speaker 8: And then it's back to New York or wherever. It's
- 12:56Speaker 8: just weird that every 20 minutes or so it switches
- 12:59Speaker 8: its main character and its location and It keeps coming back,
- 13:02Speaker 8: and there's a through line, but it's just set up
- 13:05Speaker 8: different than most movies anymore.
- 13:07Speaker 7: Was it worth the $ 2.
- 13:09Speaker 5: 50?
- 13:10Speaker 8: It was $ 0. 49, thank you.
- 13:12Speaker 7: It could have been more.
- 13:14Speaker 8: Than $ 2.
- 13:14Speaker 2: 50.
- 13:14Speaker 8: I wouldn't pay $ 2. 50 for a VHS tape.
- 13:16Speaker 7: At this point. Yeah, even $ 2. 50.
- 13:18Speaker 8: Unless it was a really cool box. Because at this point,
- 13:20Speaker 8: I just like the box art more than anything.
- 13:21Speaker 14: I think my dad said, because we were talking about it,
- 13:24Speaker 14: vhs and vcrs recently he said he got his vcr
- 13:29Speaker 14: back in the day for like 1500 oh yeah they were.
- 13:32Speaker 8: Expensive oh yeah i can't believe that.
- 13:35Speaker 9: I remember the first movie i ever saw on a
- 13:37Speaker 9: vcr was probably like in 85 or 86.
- 13:42Speaker 13: And it was like one guy we.
- 13:43Speaker 9: Knew oh he's got a vcr and it was and
- 13:47Speaker 9: we watched blood simple Nice.
- 13:49Speaker 8: That's a good starter. That's an awesome VH.
- 13:51Speaker 7: I can see that being an awesome VH.
- 13:52Speaker 15: I don't know why, really.
- 13:54Speaker 8: I think even before that, I remember, again, my uncle
- 13:59Speaker 8: had one before anybody else. He was just kind of
- 14:02Speaker 8: that guy who was sort of ahead of the curve,
- 14:03Speaker 8: and he kind of liked the tech stuff. So the
- 14:06Speaker 8: only reason he even had one is because he bought
- 14:08Speaker 8: a camera. He bought a video camera, which at the
- 14:11Speaker 8: time was its own big separate camera unit, and you
- 14:15Speaker 8: had to have the... recorder strapped to you it was
- 14:17Speaker 8: its own separate recorder and it had play and record
- 14:21Speaker 8: buttons like an old school tape recorder like audio tape
- 14:24Speaker 8: but it worked on a big giant vhs tape and
- 14:28Speaker 8: then when you wanted to watch it at home there
- 14:29Speaker 8: was a whole separate box that was like your tuner
- 14:32Speaker 8: box more or less so you had two separate boxes
- 14:35Speaker 8: sitting in front of your tv there one with the
- 14:38Speaker 8: tape and the other was just like to run it
- 14:40Speaker 8: into the tv i guess and it was it had
- 14:43Speaker 8: a top loader by the way Those were my favorite
- 14:46Speaker 8: moments were those breakthrough where you went from the top-loading
- 14:50Speaker 8: VHS to the front-loading. And then they would make a
- 14:54Speaker 8: sign at the store that was like, front-loading. It would
- 14:57Speaker 8: be really exciting. Also, my other favorite accessory that they
- 15:02Speaker 8: upgrade accessory was the... Because for a while when they
- 15:05Speaker 8: first had... Well, you had nothing. You had to walk
- 15:07Speaker 8: over and push play on it. Well, then they had
- 15:09Speaker 8: a wired remote. It was just on a wire that
- 15:13Speaker 8: ran to your... couch, I guess. And they would advertise that.
- 15:17Speaker 8: It would say, Wired Remote.
- 15:19Speaker 7: And by then they had wireless remotes, right?
- 15:22Speaker 8: Well, no. It was a few years. That was coming.
- 15:25Speaker 8: So with that first wave, they were so excited. I mean,
- 15:29Speaker 8: let's face it.
- 15:29Speaker 11: Would you rather have a wired remote or have to
- 15:31Speaker 11: get up and jump?
- 15:32Speaker 7: It's definitely an upgrade.
- 15:33Speaker 9: I would say it's an upgrade.
- 15:35Speaker 8: I don't know.
- 15:36Speaker 5: Their TV area probably looked like the stationery.
- 15:38Speaker 8: Yeah, it's loaded with wires.
- 15:40Speaker 9: It's like that joke when people... lose the remote, and
- 15:43Speaker 9: they say, oh, you ought to just tape it to
- 15:45Speaker 9: the TV. So it defeats the whole idea of the remote.
- 15:49Speaker 9: But the best idea I've ever heard, there was a
- 15:51Speaker 9: guy who embedded the remote in a football. And that
- 15:55Speaker 9: was the perfect ergonomic solution. And you can throw it.
- 16:02Speaker 9: And he had invented a lot of serious stuff, but
- 16:05Speaker 9: that was his big success, was the... The thing I
- 16:09Speaker 9: liked best was he invented a bed with a channel
- 16:11Speaker 9: in the mattress so you can sleep with your arm
- 16:14Speaker 9: around somebody and your arm doesn't go to sleep.
- 16:17Speaker 6: Oh, yeah.
- 16:19Speaker 8: That's not bad.
- 16:21Speaker 13: Never worked, though.
- 16:23Speaker 11: Didn't take off.
- 16:23Speaker 7: That's an interesting idea.
- 16:24Speaker 8: They never do, really. The good stuff, anyway.
- 16:27Speaker 7: I dismiss. There was like a texture to VHS.
- 16:33Speaker 4: I don't know if you remember when you started up,
- 16:35Speaker 4: like right when you put it in, there's that series of.
- 16:37Speaker 7: Beeps that you hear. It's like the beep-boop-beep-boop-beep-boop. Like, I
- 16:41Speaker 7: miss that, definitely.
- 16:43Speaker 10: I miss when it messed up and you had to
- 16:45Speaker 10: use your finger.
- 16:45Speaker 8: Your little movie.
- 16:46Speaker 7: Yeah, the movie.
- 16:47Speaker 8: Tracking your little.
- 16:49Speaker 9: Tracking everything. I broke it.
- 16:52Speaker 2: Yes.
- 16:52Speaker 9: Man, I've got like tons of VHS in my attic.
- 16:56Speaker 9: They're probably all like, I don't know. I kind of
- 16:59Speaker 9: always thought I should do something with the tape. Because
- 17:02Speaker 9: it moves in the most interesting way. If you ever
- 17:06Speaker 9: break a tape, it's like it's alive. Or you see
- 17:11Speaker 9: one on the road, somebody's run over, and it's just
- 17:14Speaker 9: out there going.
- 17:18Speaker 8: it's like that guy in front of the cell phone
- 17:19Speaker 8: store yeah it is it.
- 17:22Speaker 9: Is oh yeah or like that dog in the Banksy
- 17:26Speaker 9: movie when the.
- 17:28Speaker 8: Great comes up the dog that's a good one yeah
- 17:31Speaker 8: I like that dog so yeah I was reliving my
- 17:35Speaker 8: VHS days which actually I got it and I'm going
- 17:37Speaker 8: is that even hooked up I don't even think I
- 17:39Speaker 8: hooked it up last time I moved but surprisingly I
- 17:42Speaker 8: did and it worked And I made it through the
- 17:45Speaker 8: entire thing.
- 17:45Speaker 9: Did you remember how to do it? Like putting it
- 17:49Speaker 9: on the right channel and stuff?
- 17:51Speaker 8: Did I remember to be kind and rewind?
- 17:53Speaker 7: Yeah.
- 17:55Speaker 8: I did and I really expected it to snap when
- 17:57Speaker 8: it got to the end.
- 17:58Speaker 2: Wow.
- 17:58Speaker 8: Because they were, you know, it gets going so fast
- 18:01Speaker 8: and towards the end I think they made the players
- 18:03Speaker 8: smart enough to know when it was getting to the end.
- 18:05Speaker 8: But before, I mean, it would be running so fast
- 18:07Speaker 8: it would hit that end and just snap.
- 18:09Speaker 7: Yeah.
- 18:10Speaker 8: So, yeah, I was impressed. It played and I got
- 18:14Speaker 8: all the way through, and it was a fun time.
- 18:17Speaker 5: I think people are, like, really into VHSs.
- 18:20Speaker 10: Like, people are into, like, records.
- 18:21Speaker 7: Like, you know, they're like, I don't buy CDs.
- 18:24Speaker 8: Yeah, true. I don't know if it's as much... Yeah,
- 18:27Speaker 8: there actually are. I mean, because you go to... Again,
- 18:30Speaker 8: we've obviously been to a lot of conventions lately, and
- 18:32Speaker 8: there was. There was a whole section at one of
- 18:34Speaker 8: those that was just... Their entire thing was nothing but
- 18:38Speaker 8: old VHS. And I think it's more of... I don't
- 18:41Speaker 8: know if anybody is hardcore about the technology, because nobody...
- 18:44Speaker 8: It was the convenience, really, more than the picture grade
- 18:47Speaker 8: at that point. So we just liked the fact, oh,
- 18:49Speaker 8: my God, I can watch this whenever I want, like
- 18:50Speaker 8: you were saying before, Fred. So it's like the fact
- 18:53Speaker 8: that you can just put it in whenever you want
- 18:54Speaker 8: is pretty amazing. But I think there's still stuff that
- 18:58Speaker 8: was released on VHS that never made it to DVD.
- 19:01Speaker 11: Oh, yeah.
- 19:01Speaker 8: That will never make it to Blu-ray.
- 19:03Speaker 6: I've got one.
- 19:04Speaker 13: I want us to do an episode on one of those.
- 19:06Speaker 8: Which one?
- 19:07Speaker 13: It's called The Miracle.
- 19:08Speaker 16: Interesting.
- 19:09Speaker 8: You're going to have to pass.
- 19:10Speaker 5: It around and everybody watch it?
- 19:12Speaker 13: Neil Jordan.
- 19:13Speaker 9: And it's like his best movie ever, and it's not
- 19:16Speaker 9: on DVD. Wow.
- 19:18Speaker 8: There's a lot of those.
- 19:19Speaker 7: Is it like before, like late, like before Crying Game?
- 19:23Speaker 9: I think it was, yeah. It was back in Ireland,
- 19:26Speaker 9: and it's about these two teenage kids. They're kind of
- 19:29Speaker 9: boyfriend and girlfriend, but maybe they're just friends. They don't
- 19:33Speaker 9: really know. And he's a jazz musician, but he only
- 19:38Speaker 9: wants to play if he's getting paid.
- 19:40Speaker 13: And his dad is not as good.
- 19:42Speaker 9: A musician, and he'd just play to be out there.
- 19:45Speaker 13: You don't understand, when I was your age.
- 19:47Speaker 9: I would play anywhere, but the kids just like not
- 19:51Speaker 9: excited about it. Oh, and there's a circus in town
- 19:55Speaker 9: for some reason. And that whole thing of like what's
- 19:58Speaker 9: special and what's just boring and gritty and banal is like,
- 20:05Speaker 9: you know, the circus is the perfect backdrop for that.
- 20:08Speaker 9: And so they walk around and they make up stories
- 20:11Speaker 9: about tourists on the beach in Ireland. And then one
- 20:16Speaker 9: of them turns out to have some, you know, Neil
- 20:19Speaker 9: Jordan twist, fable thing.
- 20:22Speaker 13: And it's like his.
- 20:24Speaker 7: Hopefully not like, you know, gouge your eyes out like,
- 20:26Speaker 7: oh my God.
- 20:27Speaker 8: I didn't mean to see that. That was crazy.
- 20:30Speaker 9: It is a little like that. Oh, really? It's, what's
- 20:32Speaker 9: her name, the girl from Hair.
- 20:36Speaker 12: Jay Davidson?
- 20:37Speaker 8: No.
- 20:39Speaker 13: What is her name?
- 20:40Speaker 9: She's not a girl anymore.
- 20:42Speaker 8: Beverly D'Angelo?
- 20:43Speaker 9: There we go.
- 20:44Speaker 13: I don't know what I was going to say.
- 20:48Speaker 8: Just pretend like it was that. Yeah, we were both right.
- 20:54Speaker 9: The girl from Hair.
- 20:55Speaker 13: She was the horse girl in Hair.
- 20:56Speaker 10: Oh, I was thinking Hairspray.
- 21:02Speaker 8: John Travolta? No, the good hair.
- 21:05Speaker 13: He's still trying to make that movie.
- 21:06Speaker 9: I saw some movie about a mermaid who turned out
- 21:10Speaker 9: to be a drug mule.
- 21:11Speaker 8: Yeah, on D.
- 21:14Speaker 9: It was pretty good. It's pretty good, but the miracle
- 21:18Speaker 9: is like that same fable, but it's really good.
- 21:22Speaker 4: I bet it's really good, because that's like back when
- 21:24Speaker 4: Neil Ford was like kicking ass.
- 21:26Speaker 9: Yeah, he was on this game, and I can't believe
- 21:29Speaker 9: it's not on DVD.
- 21:30Speaker 13: I keep checking for.
- 21:31Speaker 8: It, and Yeah, I think that's what it is. Especially, again,
- 21:36Speaker 8: at those conventions, there's so many. I mean, that was
- 21:38Speaker 8: that wave of weird underground cult movies and horror and
- 21:43Speaker 8: sci-fi and a ton of stuff that they were just
- 21:45Speaker 8: cranking and putting out on VHS to make a profit
- 21:48Speaker 8: because it was finally kind of hitting where you could
- 21:50Speaker 8: do that. And there's so much of it that didn't
- 21:53Speaker 8: take off, but there's the hardcore geeks that are just like...
- 21:56Speaker 8: So I think it's just finding those little gems in there.
- 21:59Speaker 2: Oh, yeah.
- 22:00Speaker 8: And for me, it was always the box art. Like,
- 22:03Speaker 8: we'd done that whole running series of, like, VHS boxes
- 22:06Speaker 8: that just, like, messed you up as a kid. Oh, yeah.
- 22:08Speaker 13: I went to the video store.
- 22:10Speaker 8: In the core section, which is.
- 22:11Speaker 7: By then, it'd be a separate... Like, where I went,
- 22:15Speaker 7: it was, like, a separate room. It was all dark,
- 22:17Speaker 7: and it was just awful. It was awesome, but at
- 22:20Speaker 7: the same time, it was awful.
- 22:21Speaker 8: It was traumatizing, yeah. So I think it's that stuff.
- 22:25Speaker 8: I think there's that appeal, more than the, oh, man,
- 22:27Speaker 8: I love that picture quality on VHS, but... It was fine.
- 22:31Speaker 8: I made it through mine.
- 22:32Speaker 9: I don't think it has the thing that vinyl has
- 22:35Speaker 9: in records.
- 22:36Speaker 8: It makes that noise.
- 22:37Speaker 9: It does have that noise, which sort of like sets
- 22:40Speaker 9: up your movie appetite.
- 22:42Speaker 13: You start salivating like Pavlov's dog.
- 22:45Speaker 8: But there is a level, because you'll talk to, like
- 22:50Speaker 8: Beau's gone into this several times, where it's like film
- 22:54Speaker 8: versus digital. He said the same thing about the vinyl thing,
- 22:58Speaker 8: whereas it has... It has a look and a texture
- 23:02Speaker 8: to it that is, you know, a loved thing. And
- 23:05Speaker 8: it actually is that same thing that people say about vinyl. Yeah.
- 23:08Speaker 8: It's been worn and it has that history to it
- 23:12Speaker 8: because of that. Because every time you play it, it
- 23:14Speaker 8: kind of does something to it.
- 23:15Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 23:16Speaker 9: Like when I was in college, like when a couple
- 23:19Speaker 9: broke up, it always came down to the record collection.
- 23:23Speaker 4: Right.
- 23:23Speaker 13: And I don't think people do that anymore. They don't
- 23:26Speaker 13: have that. Have I told this before?
- 23:29Speaker 9: I'm like a record that's been played before. Which one?
- 23:34Speaker 9: I think it was Bernard Shaw said, every man is
- 23:38Speaker 9: like half a dozen records that you've listened to already. But, yeah,
- 23:43Speaker 9: I mean, if I went home tonight and started talking
- 23:46Speaker 9: about my wife's old boyfriend, pretty soon she'd be going like,
- 23:51Speaker 9: I had this. these frank zappa records and i had
- 23:55Speaker 9: and the fugs.
- 23:59Speaker 8: Well now that just happens if there's like a small
- 24:02Speaker 8: movie theater that goes under and all the employees they're
- 24:05Speaker 8: just like no no no i ordered this one this
- 24:08Speaker 8: we have this print because i got it yeah so
- 24:11Speaker 8: yeah i guess that's the only way that still happens
- 24:13Speaker 8: since nobody even has prints anymore it's all digital now.
- 24:16Speaker 4: Yeah I still have, like, I mean, we were, like,
- 24:19Speaker 4: my family, we were a big movie fan, and, like,
- 24:21Speaker 4: we just, like, all we did was just watch just
- 24:24Speaker 4: VHSs all the time. Like, there's still, like, last time
- 24:26Speaker 4: I went home, there was, like, a couple of stuff that, like, I'm.
- 24:29Speaker 7: Like, oh, that's, like, that probably will never be on DVD.
- 24:33Speaker 4: Like, we still had, like, I think the last VHS
- 24:36Speaker 4: I got was, like, a gift, and it was Don't
- 24:39Speaker 4: Look in the Basement.
- 24:40Speaker 9: Nice.
- 24:40Speaker 2: And, um.
- 24:42Speaker 13: Another classic.
- 24:43Speaker 7: Yeah, like, they had a cool cover, which I'm sure
- 24:45Speaker 7: it was, like, bought at a garage sale.
- 24:47Speaker 4: And, like, Peach Dragon, like, I haven't seen that at,
- 24:50Speaker 4: you know, like, a store or anywhere.
- 24:52Speaker 7: I just remember watching that. Well, it's Disney. They have
- 24:54Speaker 7: to vault it.
- 24:55Speaker 8: Just to mess with people. I think they're ashamed of
- 24:58Speaker 8: that movie, actually. It doesn't hold up.
- 25:02Speaker 7: Yeah, if you're a kid, it's awesome, but I haven't
- 25:04Speaker 7: seen it.
- 25:05Speaker 8: I remember when they put it back out, at least
- 25:07Speaker 8: on VHS one of the times, and I saw it
- 25:09Speaker 8: and I was like, I remember liking this more as
- 25:10Speaker 8: a kid. There's a whole lot of singing and dancing
- 25:13Speaker 8: and crap in there. I just remember the dragon being awesome,
- 25:15Speaker 8: but All this Helen Reddy stuff going on. I don't know.
- 25:19Speaker 9: Oh, Helen Reddy. It's hilarious.
- 25:21Speaker 10: What I miss about PHS was, well, we lived overseas,
- 25:25Speaker 10: so a lot of times people would mail us PHS.
- 25:28Speaker 8: Did you have PAL?
- 25:30Speaker 9: I don't know what that is. Damn it.
- 25:31Speaker 10: Or, like, even, like, if you were going to go
- 25:33Speaker 10: out and a movie was going to play, you press record,
- 25:35Speaker 10: and then you get, like, six other movies.
- 25:37Speaker 8: Yeah.
- 25:38Speaker 7: Like, that's how I saw.
- 25:39Speaker 10: Doc Hollywood for the first time, because it was on
- 25:42Speaker 10: Don't Tell Mom the Babysitter's Day.
- 25:45Speaker 8: Speaking of classics.
- 25:46Speaker 7: Yeah, and then we do.
- 25:48Speaker 5: Oh, what else is on that tape? That one with
- 25:50Speaker 5: that guy that got super famous for.
- 25:53Speaker 17: What's the.
- 25:55Speaker 9: That guy.
- 25:55Speaker 11: The really big, the really, Grey's Anatomy.
- 25:58Speaker 5: Okay, there's a guy that's like a heartthrob on that.
- 26:02Speaker 8: Patrick Dempsey.
- 26:02Speaker 5: Thank you so much.
- 26:04Speaker 11: Can't buy me love?
- 26:05Speaker 5: No, he went to.
- 26:07Speaker 10: College, and the girl pretended her name was Alex, so
- 26:11Speaker 10: she pretended she was a guy, so they gave her
- 26:13Speaker 10: a guy roommate, and it ended up being him.
- 26:15Speaker 7: Oh, God.
- 26:16Speaker 9: She's the man.
- 26:18Speaker 8: No, there's like 40 of those.
- 26:20Speaker 5: Yeah, what?
- 26:21Speaker 9: Orange County. I don't know.
- 26:23Speaker 8: Three's Company. It wishes it was just one of the guys,
- 26:27Speaker 8: but it's not.
- 26:28Speaker 5: You get all these movies, and then you get like
- 26:30Speaker 5: half of one that you'd be really into, but like
- 26:32Speaker 5: you say, it never plays again on TV. So we'd
- 26:34Speaker 5: have all these random movies and commercials.
- 26:38Speaker 8: Forever and ever. You've got to do the math.
- 26:40Speaker 9: Oh, and every now and then you'd run out of
- 26:41Speaker 9: tape before.
- 26:42Speaker 8: The end of the movie.
- 26:44Speaker 9: And you wouldn't know it until like, I'm watching happiness
- 26:48Speaker 9: with my wife.
- 26:50Speaker 13: And we get to this.
- 26:51Speaker 4: Fuck!
- 26:52Speaker 5: It's done.
- 26:53Speaker 8: I grew up.
- 26:53Speaker 7: This was not until five years ago.
- 26:55Speaker 11: I grew up.
- 26:59Speaker 4: Watching Mary Poppins, and, like, to my knowledge, that movie, literally, like,
- 27:03Speaker 4: it ended on Feed the Birds.
- 27:05Speaker 8: Like, that was, like, Feed the Birds, done.
- 27:07Speaker 9: And it was just, that was.
- 27:08Speaker 7: The end of the movie. Like, I put it as
- 27:10Speaker 7: a pin, and you're like, well, that's it. And I
- 27:13Speaker 7: was like, that was Mary Poppins, that was fun.
- 27:15Speaker 8: Somehow. I didn't know, like, I didn't.
- 27:16Speaker 7: Know, like, five years later, I discovered, like, there's, like,
- 27:18Speaker 7: three more musical.
- 27:19Speaker 9: Acts, like, there's a final, like.
- 27:20Speaker 11: Oh, you know what? I was watching Scott Pilgrim vs.
- 27:25Speaker 11: the World when it came out, you know, originally.
- 27:27Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 27:28Speaker 14: In the theater, and the fire alarm went off, like,
- 27:31Speaker 14: halfway through the movie. And, like, I was so into
- 27:35Speaker 14: it at the halfway point.
- 27:36Speaker 11: I was like, that was amazing. I was, like, really upset.
- 27:38Speaker 14: You know, the fire alarm went off, and then I
- 27:40Speaker 14: went back and, you know, saw it again, and I
- 27:43Speaker 14: was like, oh, like, I realized, like, actually that was
- 27:46Speaker 14: the best for the movie because the second half didn't really, like,
- 27:49Speaker 14: slam dunk it.
- 27:50Speaker 11: And so I think sometimes it's.
- 27:51Speaker 14: Good to just arbitrarily cut off a movie at a
- 27:54Speaker 14: certain point.
- 27:55Speaker 8: Well, I just like for you, Ben, that you found
- 27:57Speaker 8: some director's cut in a vault as far as you
- 28:00Speaker 8: were concerned. Oh, my God. Wow, this is great.
- 28:03Speaker 4: Like the song about laughing and the chimneys.
- 28:06Speaker 7: I was like, this is like.
- 28:09Speaker 4: Blowing my mind like knowing this was there the whole
- 28:11Speaker 4: time I never knew.
- 28:13Speaker 14: I have a home video of me um doing the
- 28:17Speaker 14: entire step in time dance sequence chimney roof thing and
- 28:21Speaker 14: my diapers step in time it is uh yeah it's
- 28:24Speaker 14: pretty hilarious oh my.
- 28:25Speaker 8: God Are you going to do that?
- 28:27Speaker 7: And Feed the Birds was like the most melancholic part
- 28:29Speaker 7: of the movie. It would just end on that note.
- 28:31Speaker 8: You're like, this is such a downer movie, man.
- 28:33Speaker 11: Mary Poppins is this nihilistic.
- 28:36Speaker 14: She's lonely, she's feeding the birds.
- 28:38Speaker 5: And it just ends.
- 28:40Speaker 11: That's very French.
- 28:41Speaker 7: I think it gave me more character, I like to think.
- 28:45Speaker 7: The darker, the more, like I was raised, you know...
- 28:49Speaker 7: Raised on these dark Disney movies.
- 28:50Speaker 4: I like to think that, you know, it had a
- 28:52Speaker 4: good impact on me.
- 28:53Speaker 7: I don't even remember how, like, the normal version is.
- 28:55Speaker 7: Because I saw it maybe two times in my life.
- 28:57Speaker 5: Should it flash away or something?
- 28:59Speaker 8: Spoiler alert.
- 29:01Speaker 2: God.
- 29:01Speaker 7: Typical Disney, you know.
- 29:03Speaker 5: 63 years later.
- 29:05Speaker 9: But we are spoiling this one.
- 29:08Speaker 8: Ruined that one for me now.
- 29:10Speaker 17: Come feed the little birds, show them you care, and
- 29:17Speaker 17: you'll be glad if you do. Their young ones are hungry,
- 29:27Speaker 17: their nests are so.
- 29:29Speaker 4: Bare, all it takes is tuppence.
- 29:34Speaker 5: From you.
- 29:40Speaker 17: Feed the birds tuppence a bag.
- 29:47Speaker 18: Tuppence, tuppence, tuppence a bag.
- 29:54Speaker 12: It's intermission time. So how about taking a break, get
- 29:58Speaker 12: out and stretch a little, and relax before the show
- 30:01Speaker 12: begins again. And why not make it refreshment time, too?

- 30:45Speaker 19: Does the word Topaz mean anything to you?
- 30:47Speaker 15: What is Topaz?
- 30:48Speaker 7: A story of espionage in high places.
- 30:55Speaker 3: A best-selling novel for over a year, The Revelations in
- 30:58Speaker 3: Topaz shook up world capitals and started a spy hunt
- 31:02Speaker 3: that is still going on. From between the covers of
- 31:06Speaker 3: this book, Hitchcock has taken intrigue, suspense, excitement, Warm-blooded men
- 31:12Speaker 3: and women take risks, make love, face death for stakes
- 31:16Speaker 3: that involve the world. And I'm supposed to keep my
- 31:19Speaker 3: mouth shut and uncover topaz?
- 31:21Speaker 7: At the risk of my own skin?
- 31:23Speaker 3: The action is global.
- 31:25Speaker 12: Bosco.
- 31:26Speaker 3: Copenhagen.
- 31:28Speaker 12: Get your hands down, quick!
- 31:31Speaker 2: Washington.
- 31:32Speaker 9: I gave you no understanding.
- 31:34Speaker 7: The hell you didn't.
- 31:36Speaker 12: You're in this business, you know the score.
- 31:39Speaker 3: There is a woman in Cuba.
- 31:41Speaker 2: Isn't there?
- 31:42Speaker 7: She sometimes works for me.
- 31:44Speaker 20: What else does she do for you?
- 31:47Speaker 3: Overall lurks the mystery of Topaz and nothing is what
- 31:50Speaker 3: it seems. A piece of bread can mean death. A
- 31:55Speaker 3: broken figurine can mean freedom. In New York's Harlem, a
- 31:59Speaker 3: man risks his life to take pictures of what? In Cuba,
- 32:08Speaker 3: an agent visits his mistress and no one asks why
- 32:11Speaker 3: at first.
- 32:12Speaker 7: You picked a.
- 32:13Speaker 5: Hell of a time to come.
- 32:15Speaker 19: Security's tight.
- 32:17Speaker 7: This island is crawling with Russians.
- 32:20Speaker 19: She is a widow of a hero of the revolution.
- 32:24Speaker 19: She is loved and honored in this country. If it
- 32:28Speaker 19: were not for her, you would disappear tonight.
- 32:32Speaker 3: In Paris, a secret meeting.
- 32:34Speaker 19: And in an alley.
- 32:35Speaker 3: Samara!
- 32:37Speaker 2: Look.
- 32:40Speaker 3: Murder.
- 32:41Speaker 19: Or is it suicide?
- 32:43Speaker 7: You will not catch my.
- 32:45Speaker 2: Back, Lord!
- 32:46Speaker 12: I don't want you to be killed.
- 32:48Speaker 3: There's something I have to.
- 32:51Speaker 6: Tell you.
- 32:52Speaker 18: Tell me now.
- 33:01Speaker 1: If you're enjoying this podcast, perhaps you'd be interested in GleeCast.
- 33:04Speaker 8: You watch your tone, young lady.
- 33:06Speaker 1: Hey, we're not forcing you to download the internet's best,
- 33:09Speaker 1: or at least most booze-filled podcast about Glee.
- 33:12Speaker 8: You want to be me.
- 33:13Speaker 20: Who doesn't, Sue?
- 33:14Speaker 1: But we know we can't be. Instead, Erica and Emily. Uh,
- 33:17Speaker 1: Emily and Erica.
- 33:18Speaker 14: Who am I?
- 33:19Speaker 5: I just don't know anymore.
- 33:20Speaker 8: I'd love to stay in chat, but I got a
- 33:21Speaker 8: satellite interview.
- 33:22Speaker 1: Sorry, we get off topic a lot. The point is,
- 33:25Speaker 1: listen to Glee Cast following every new episode of Glee. Plus,
- 33:27Speaker 1: our sporadic bonus content on some of the greatest bad
- 33:30Speaker 1: cinema that incorporates musical theater.
- 33:31Speaker 11: Or sweet dance moves.
- 33:32Speaker 5: I'm going to ask you to smell your armpits.
- 33:35Speaker 2: The right or the left? I don't know.
- 33:36Speaker 7: That's the smell of failure.
- 33:38Speaker 1: Failure smells like dove? Mine has a pleasant lady speed
- 33:41Speaker 1: stick scent. Kind of makes me think of candy canes.
- 33:43Speaker 5: Your resentment is delicious.
- 33:46Speaker 1: Visit gleecast.podomatic.com or search for us in the iTunes store.
- 33:49Speaker 1: That's Gleecast with a K, part of the palaver.com family.
- 33:52Speaker 1: That's P-A-L-A-V-R dot com.
- 33:54Speaker 12: Boy, the only thing missing from this place is a
- 33:56Speaker 12: couple dozen bodies limed and rotting in shallow graves under
- 33:59Speaker 12: the floorboards.
- 34:00Speaker 11: We're working on that.

- 34:35Speaker 18: Hi, my name's Christina Cleave, and you're listening to Movie Meltdown.
- 34:38Speaker 18: It's part of your problem, you know.
- 34:40Speaker 7: You haven't seen enough movies.
- 34:42Speaker 5: All of life's riddles are answered in the movies. And now,
- 34:45Speaker 5: on with the show.
- 35:34Speaker 7: I remember.
- 35:47Speaker 10: The first thing we ever rented was Blockbuster.
- 35:56Speaker 7: Oh, nice.
- 35:57Speaker 5: It was Dick Tracy.
- 35:59Speaker 7: Oh, yeah.
- 36:00Speaker 8: Another classic.
- 36:01Speaker 4: Yeah.
- 36:01Speaker 5: So Dick Tracy.
- 36:03Speaker 6: Oh, God.
- 36:05Speaker 10: And Batman with the penguins.
- 36:08Speaker 7: Oh, yeah.
- 36:09Speaker 8: Batman Returns?
- 36:09Speaker 2: Yes.
- 36:10Speaker 9: Batman Returns.
- 36:11Speaker 7: I've heard of that a lot. That was one of
- 36:13Speaker 7: my favorite movies.
- 36:14Speaker 8: It's underrated, if you ask me.
- 36:16Speaker 10: Yeah, I'm totally partial to the first group of Batman
- 36:20Speaker 10: films with the comedy aspect.
- 36:22Speaker 5: I know that's me.
- 36:25Speaker 9: I think Michael Keaton was the best Batman.
- 36:28Speaker 8: Yeah, that's the thing.
- 36:28Speaker 7: I really love the Tim Burton movies.
- 36:30Speaker 8: It's the Tim Burton movies.
- 36:32Speaker 4: I did go back After, like, having seen the Nolan,
- 36:35Speaker 4: the new Nolan movies, I'm like, yeah, these are, I
- 36:37Speaker 4: can definitely see why, like, it's not quite, like, some
- 36:41Speaker 4: people would say it wouldn't do justice to, like, the
- 36:43Speaker 4: comics or anything.
- 36:43Speaker 7: But I still think they're awesome because they're their own thing.
- 36:46Speaker 2: Right.
- 36:46Speaker 7: Like, it's, they're Tim Burton movies.
- 36:48Speaker 8: Yeah.
- 36:48Speaker 7: And if you watch them, like, on that level, they're awesome.
- 36:51Speaker 7: I still love them.
- 36:52Speaker 8: Well, it's funny. I mean, we look at that now
- 36:53Speaker 8: versus the Nolan stuff. But think about what, I mean,
- 36:56Speaker 8: that was the first time you'd seen it other than
- 36:58Speaker 8: Adam West, really. I mean, for most people.
- 37:01Speaker 11: I grew up watching the Adam West.
- 37:02Speaker 8: Yeah, me too.
- 37:04Speaker 11: I had that.
- 37:05Speaker 8: So that was really serious to me at that point.
- 37:08Speaker 8: I was just like, wow, look at this dark, serious movie.
- 37:10Speaker 8: And now you look at it and you're like, look
- 37:11Speaker 8: at this silly-ass shit.
- 37:13Speaker 13: But it's still cool.
- 37:14Speaker 9: I met Adam West when I was a kid, but
- 37:16Speaker 9: he wasn't my babysitter.
- 37:18Speaker 2: Right.
- 37:19Speaker 8: I saw him at a convention a couple years ago.
- 37:21Speaker 9: I didn't follow him closely enough for that to ever happen.
- 37:25Speaker 13: Also, I still think.
- 37:29Speaker 9: Catwoman was the best thing Michelle Pfeiffer ever did. She's
- 37:32Speaker 9: great in that scene. In a lot of her performances,
- 37:37Speaker 9: she's pretty good, but it feels kind of like student work.
- 37:40Speaker 13: Like she's doing it for a grade.
- 37:43Speaker 9: But when she put on that Catwoman suit, she was
- 37:46Speaker 9: serious about it.
- 37:48Speaker 8: She's very cold and calculated about a lot of roles.
- 37:52Speaker 8: And then that one she just totally opens up to,
- 37:55Speaker 8: and she's just really at home in it.
- 37:57Speaker 9: It's kind of like how the Rocky Horror guy, Tim...
- 38:02Speaker 9: Tim Curry?
- 38:03Speaker 13: Yeah, Tim Curry.
- 38:04Speaker 9: Oh, Tim Curry. Yeah, like you can't really believe him
- 38:07Speaker 9: when he plays like a real life role. But if
- 38:11Speaker 9: it's something cartoony and over the top.
- 38:13Speaker 8: But when he's darkness, he's amazing.
- 38:18Speaker 10: People kind of underestimate Jim Carrey and Robin Williams for
- 38:21Speaker 10: the same thing.
- 38:22Speaker 9: Because they can be cartoons.
- 38:24Speaker 8: And they can be real.
- 38:26Speaker 5: When they're real, sometimes.
- 38:27Speaker 9: That's some of their best work.
- 38:30Speaker 7: Studied, like, was it Juilliard? Like, before he was in
- 38:33Speaker 7: the comic, like, he was an actor.
- 38:35Speaker 8: They're equally as much to blame, though, because they do
- 38:37Speaker 8: that to themselves. Like, they get to that point and
- 38:39Speaker 8: they make themselves a joke. And they won't stop, especially,
- 38:43Speaker 8: I mean, Jim Carrey really does. But Robin Williams is equal.
- 38:46Speaker 8: I mean, you watch him on any talk show. He
- 38:47Speaker 8: just acts like an idiot. And I like the guy,
- 38:50Speaker 8: but he acts just silly.
- 38:52Speaker 7: At this point, I just want him to be like,
- 38:53Speaker 7: he's an awesome actor. He can make a movie. He
- 38:55Speaker 7: doesn't have to keep, you know.
- 38:56Speaker 8: Quit climbing on the furniture on The Tonight Show. Just, like,
- 39:00Speaker 8: make a serious movie. Because you can do both, but
- 39:02Speaker 8: I've seen so much of the other silliness that it's
- 39:04Speaker 8: just like, just turn in those good performances and keep
- 39:07Speaker 8: doing that. Because, yeah, he's... And Jim Carrey kind of
- 39:10Speaker 8: does that, but everybody's kind of sick of him.
- 39:12Speaker 14: It's tough for comedians because after they get exposed, like,
- 39:16Speaker 14: their shtick just gets old.
- 39:18Speaker 8: And they have to keep doing it. And so unless
- 39:19Speaker 8: you can transition.
- 39:20Speaker 11: To drama, you're pretty much going to be in and out.
- 39:23Speaker 9: Yeah, like, even like Zach Galifianakis.
- 39:27Speaker 8: Galifianakis.
- 39:27Speaker 11: Galifianakis.
- 39:28Speaker 5: I don't really want to see him do that anymore.
- 39:30Speaker 8: It's all kind of the same.
- 39:32Speaker 5: You've got to do something else or shave or move on.
- 39:34Speaker 5: You know, like something's got to change.
- 39:36Speaker 9: They did that with everybody.
- 39:38Speaker 8: Like Jack Black got painted in that corner and every
- 39:41Speaker 8: role had to, yeah.
- 39:42Speaker 4: Although I will say, I do think, like, I would
- 39:45Speaker 4: like to see Jack Black go in the acting role.
- 39:49Speaker 8: He has, and he's done some good stuff, but he
- 39:51Speaker 8: still falls back into that Jack Black thing. And again,
- 39:55Speaker 8: it's just sort of expected of him now, especially in
- 39:57Speaker 8: the comedies.
- 39:58Speaker 9: The opposite side of that coin, though, is like Earl
- 40:01Speaker 9: Brown when he auditioned for There's Something About Mary. Everybody
- 40:08Speaker 9: else up for the role of the retarded brother was
- 40:11Speaker 9: a comedian. And he went in and he thought, no,
- 40:15Speaker 9: I need to just play it straight, and it will
- 40:17Speaker 9: be funny because I'm straight. And he said it was
- 40:20Speaker 9: the only audition he ever walked out of feeling like,
- 40:23Speaker 9: I killed that.
- 40:24Speaker 7: Yeah.
- 40:25Speaker 9: Totally. And he got the part, and he did the movie,
- 40:28Speaker 9: and it was a huge movie, but he said... it
- 40:30Speaker 9: didn't raise his name at all. Everybody just thought he
- 40:34Speaker 9: was a retarded guy.
- 40:37Speaker 8: He's too good.
- 40:37Speaker 13: Didn't do anything for his.
- 40:42Speaker 8: Well, especially in that movie, it's so ridiculous for everybody
- 40:46Speaker 8: else to be going in there playing it over the
- 40:48Speaker 8: top and silly, because it's like, look at what else
- 40:50Speaker 8: is going on in this movie. Why do you, especially
- 40:53Speaker 8: playing someone who's mentally challenged, go in there and do
- 40:56Speaker 8: the same thing? It's just like, That's the funniest thing
- 40:58Speaker 8: in the world is to go in there and you
- 41:00Speaker 8: be the straight guy. What have you done?
- 41:04Speaker 7: He found my movie.
- 41:05Speaker 10: It was Happy Together with Patrick Dempsey.
- 41:07Speaker 5: For all you great Saturday fans out there, you should
- 41:10Speaker 5: watch this.
- 41:11Speaker 9: It was hard to find because he did a thousand
- 41:14Speaker 9: of them. more or less that movie. Young guy, off
- 41:18Speaker 9: at college, something.
- 41:20Speaker 8: Yeah, I didn't like any of those. I don't like
- 41:23Speaker 8: Patrick Gibson.
- 41:24Speaker 7: I didn't even know he was in movies before, like,
- 41:27Speaker 7: Grey's Anatomy. That was the first time I knew who
- 41:29Speaker 7: he was.
- 41:29Speaker 8: Missing classics, like, Can't Buy Me Love.
- 41:31Speaker 5: Oh, no, wait.
- 41:32Speaker 8: I avoided that on purpose. Those movies, I don't know.
- 41:35Speaker 10: Speaking of auditions where, like, you go in and do
- 41:38Speaker 10: the opposite, and speaking of what I've been watching recently,
- 41:41Speaker 10: Breaking Bad.
- 41:42Speaker 5: Which is It's pretty epic. That's how he played it,
- 42:03Speaker 5: and he's phenomenal in it.
- 42:05Speaker 10: And when I read that, I was like, wow. I mean,
- 42:08Speaker 10: everyone else was like, oh, I've got to be real
- 42:10Speaker 10: serious in this year. He's just like, this is the
- 42:11Speaker 10: kind of.
- 42:12Speaker 5: Play I'm in. He has the part.
- 42:14Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 42:15Speaker 9: That's like, who was the actor who turned down Men
- 42:18Speaker 9: in Black because he just thought it was the stupidest thing?
- 42:21Speaker 9: He didn't get it at all. It was like, what?
- 42:26Speaker 13: This is the worst.
- 42:27Speaker 8: Script I've ever read.
- 42:30Speaker 4: That must have been like, movies like that just have
- 42:33Speaker 4: to be like, when you read the scriptures, like, okay.
- 42:35Speaker 7: It's like, and then he shoots the alien with the
- 42:37Speaker 7: laser beam.
- 42:38Speaker 5: Yeah.
- 42:38Speaker 7: There's poop everywhere, and there's a one-liner here, and you're like.
- 42:41Speaker 9: Yeah, he thought it was laser cats or something.
- 42:45Speaker 8: Just totally.
- 42:46Speaker 13: And he owned up to it, too. I forget who
- 42:49Speaker 13: it was.
- 42:50Speaker 9: But he was somebody like Christian Slater or somebody.
- 42:55Speaker 8: And the world dodged a bullet.
- 42:58Speaker 9: Or, I don't know.
- 43:00Speaker 13: That's probably the wrong guy.
- 43:02Speaker 8: That's where you went, man.
- 43:03Speaker 6: I don't know.
- 43:04Speaker 14: I don't know who Christian Slater is.
- 43:09Speaker 8: He's my closest friend. Please believe me. Not his, like,
- 43:12Speaker 8: other more well-known roles. You went for Bed of Roses.
- 43:15Speaker 14: Okay.
- 43:15Speaker 9: My name is Rose.
- 43:15Speaker 7: Okay, yeah, I watched the movie Bed of Roses.
- 43:19Speaker 9: I'm sticking with Purple Pavillion. Actually, I was his babysitter.
- 43:23Speaker 8: That explains why he turned out like that. I'll throw
- 43:27Speaker 8: some others out there. I did watch another one, and
- 43:30Speaker 8: this is, see, there's things that you wouldn't seek out
- 43:34Speaker 8: to watch, but when, I won't name that, service that
- 43:38Speaker 8: comes to everyone's house now and we all have and
- 43:40Speaker 8: we all just take it for granted and watch things
- 43:42Speaker 8: on there until they start paying for advertising but we
- 43:45Speaker 8: all know what it is um when it comes up
- 43:47Speaker 8: on the new releases and you're like all right let's
- 43:50Speaker 8: see what this is right that's how you end up
- 43:53Speaker 8: watching things like nazis at the center of the earth.
- 43:56Speaker 9: Yeah nazis at the center yeah yeah wow it's based
- 44:00Speaker 9: on a true story.
- 44:02Speaker 8: According to the movie yeah that's how it went down Well,
- 44:06Speaker 8: I was already kind of worried, but then when it
- 44:08Speaker 8: came up.
- 44:09Speaker 7: I was imagining it opening like, the Nazis were driven
- 44:11Speaker 7: underground into the Earth's core.
- 44:13Speaker 5: Yeah.
- 44:14Speaker 8: So you watched it, all right.
- 44:16Speaker 14: That would be an interesting twist, is just the idea of,
- 44:20Speaker 14: instead of trying to get to the center of the Earth,
- 44:22Speaker 14: it's the people in the center that are trying to
- 44:23Speaker 14: get out.
- 44:24Speaker 8: And take over the world.
- 44:25Speaker 7: That would have been like a cool premise.
- 44:28Speaker 8: And that's what you get once you watch it. It's like,
- 44:31Speaker 8: there's like... an interesting setup, and they come up with
- 44:34Speaker 8: a really fun gimmick thing by the end of it,
- 44:37Speaker 8: but I'm like, there's a.
- 44:38Speaker 13: Lot of problems along the way.
- 44:40Speaker 11: Do we really know it's at the center of the Earth?
- 44:43Speaker 11: I mean, really?
- 44:44Speaker 8: I think we better go find out.
- 44:45Speaker 9: Not everybody knows this, but there was a Kentucky vice president.
- 44:50Speaker 9: Who was it? Johnson? Richard Johnson. And he proposed to
- 44:55Speaker 9: Congress an expedition to the center of the Earth. Yeah,
- 45:00Speaker 9: it was Simms' Hollywood Theory.
- 45:03Speaker 8: Senator Jones Burns.
- 45:06Speaker 7: Did you see that movie with the court? That was awesome.
- 45:09Speaker 9: Richard Johnson, and I think his political career was based
- 45:14Speaker 9: on people thinking he might have been the guy who
- 45:16Speaker 9: killed Tecumseh. They weren't sure, but he was there.
- 45:20Speaker 8: Sometimes that's all you need.
- 45:21Speaker 7: Name recognition.
- 45:23Speaker 9: He was one of the worst vice presidents ever... hard
- 45:26Speaker 9: to mess that up but he.
- 45:28Speaker 11: Did wow worst vice president.
- 45:30Speaker 9: He did seriously propose.
- 45:32Speaker 14: He could just be ahead of his time though because
- 45:35Speaker 14: john quincy adams proposed that we go to the moon
- 45:38Speaker 14: and he was just you.
- 45:39Speaker 9: Know wrong place yeah we may eventually go to the
- 45:43Speaker 9: center of the.
- 45:44Speaker 8: Earth why would be like why didn't we elect jules
- 45:47Speaker 8: verne is what i want to know yeah that dude
- 45:49Speaker 8: was on top of all of these things.
- 45:51Speaker 4: I do hope that the government hires Werner Herzog to
- 45:54Speaker 4: go along. That's the only way I'll accept that happening.
- 45:59Speaker 11: They would all descend into madness, though.
- 46:01Speaker 9: They would. Well, this movie... Drag a boat over a mountain.
- 46:08Speaker 8: This one, I think that's what sort of really, like,
- 46:12Speaker 8: out of sheer curiosity at this point, because then the
- 46:14Speaker 8: main star listed was Dominique Swain... And I'm like, and
- 46:20Speaker 8: that's the thing. I like her, but I'm like, how
- 46:22Speaker 8: the hell does she fit into this Nazis and Senator?
- 46:26Speaker 8: I was just like, well, how does that? All right, fine.
- 46:28Speaker 8: Now I'm going to have to watch it. And she
- 46:32Speaker 8: does some weird stuff in this. She makes like it
- 46:35Speaker 8: starts off and it's her and they're in this like,
- 46:38Speaker 8: I don't know, some sort of weird frozen environment. And
- 46:41Speaker 8: she's got this giant park on and she looks up
- 46:43Speaker 8: and she makes this face. It makes no sense. It's
- 46:47Speaker 8: the goofiest thing I've ever seen. And I'm like, did
- 46:49Speaker 8: she know the camera was on? It seems so out
- 46:53Speaker 8: of place. In not just the context of this movie,
- 46:57Speaker 8: but like in life. I'm like, why didn't you just
- 46:59Speaker 8: make that face?
- 47:00Speaker 14: I always thought it'd be funny to do a movie
- 47:02Speaker 14: where you only record like 10 times. 15 to 30
- 47:06Speaker 14: seconds before and after the take and just make a
- 47:09Speaker 14: movie based on those splices.
- 47:11Speaker 8: The other things going on, yeah.
- 47:13Speaker 7: Tell the actors that, you know, just lie to them
- 47:15Speaker 7: and say, yeah, yeah, we got that.
- 47:16Speaker 2: Right.
- 47:16Speaker 7: Just bring it to the premiere and they'll just watch
- 47:19Speaker 7: it in horror.
- 47:21Speaker 8: Like, what the, no, you said, you said cut, no. Well, that's,
- 47:27Speaker 8: that was half of it was just figuring out, and then,
- 47:29Speaker 8: and then we get in there and Jake, you see, he's,
- 47:32Speaker 8: he's trying, he's holding his own as best he can
- 47:34Speaker 8: in this movie. He's a scientist.
- 47:37Speaker 11: Is that a sign of.
- 47:41Speaker 8: Seniority? And he's been in some stuff, and he's turned
- 47:43Speaker 8: in some good performances. But yeah, this one, he's just like,
- 47:46Speaker 8: he's sort of along for the ride. I'm sure he's like.
- 47:49Speaker 4: The staple of sci-fi-related movies.
- 47:52Speaker 8: I mean, this is another one of those asylum movies. So, yeah,
- 47:57Speaker 8: it's right.
- 47:58Speaker 7: Along those lines. Those have their own weird charm to them.
- 48:00Speaker 10: You know?
- 48:00Speaker 2: Like.
- 48:01Speaker 8: Charms, you're putting it nicely.
- 48:03Speaker 4: It's always knocking off a more famous movie with a different,
- 48:06Speaker 4: more generic title.
- 48:07Speaker 7: You just have to embrace it.
- 48:08Speaker 8: They're the transmorphers kind of guys. Yeah, it's a weird...
- 48:14Speaker 8: And here's my main issue with this movie, more than
- 48:18Speaker 8: the ridiculous writing and the weird performances. Again, we've got
- 48:23Speaker 8: somebody to go to for an example. You've made a movie.
- 48:26Speaker 8: When you're making this movie, Scooter, you'd probably want to,
- 48:29Speaker 8: I don't know, turn on a light, right?
- 48:32Speaker 14: Well, if you're making Nazis in the center of the earth,
- 48:36Speaker 14: you know, you may not need lights. Perhaps there's no
- 48:38Speaker 14: light in the center of the earth, you know?
- 48:41Speaker 11: You've got to think about it logically.
- 48:43Speaker 8: Oh, I'm sorry.
- 48:45Speaker 9: Don't just go around lighting things willy-nilly.
- 48:48Speaker 7: It has to make sense.
- 48:49Speaker 14: It could be like that saying, you know, philosophy is
- 48:53Speaker 14: searching for a black cat in a dark room, and
- 48:56Speaker 14: the black cat's not there.
- 48:58Speaker 8: Or that was the name of this movie, the alternate title.
- 49:01Speaker 8: I like that. I mean, it's not even like there
- 49:04Speaker 8: was just, you know, the cinematographer didn't know what the
- 49:06Speaker 8: hell he was doing or something. It was like, They had, well,
- 49:09Speaker 8: once they go in the center of the Earth, first
- 49:11Speaker 8: of all, there's a sun down there. They don't really
- 49:14Speaker 8: explain why, and there's almost like this like weird translucent
- 49:19Speaker 8: glass coating over it they don't really explain any of
- 49:22Speaker 8: the science and i'm using quotes obviously i don't know
- 49:25Speaker 8: what's going on there but there's some sort of sun
- 49:27Speaker 8: but then immediately within like five minutes they go inside
- 49:30Speaker 8: this like compound in the center of the earth like
- 49:33Speaker 8: there is i'm sure And then they're just in a
- 49:35Speaker 8: big cement building for the entire rest of the movie.
- 49:39Speaker 8: And every scene is lit by one bare light bulb
- 49:42Speaker 8: sitting in the center of the room. And they're like,
- 49:46Speaker 8: some of them are pretty good sized rooms. And there's
- 49:48Speaker 8: like one character kind of by the light bulb. And
- 49:51Speaker 8: there's other people on the other side. And I'm like,
- 49:53Speaker 8: I don't even know they're in the room at this point.
- 49:55Speaker 11: Are you sure it wasn't a dogma film?
- 49:56Speaker 8: I don't know, but. I'm just like, really? If you're
- 50:00Speaker 8: going to go to all this trouble to get a
- 50:02Speaker 8: camera and hire actors? And I mean, wouldn't you want
- 50:04Speaker 8: to be able to see a little of what's going on?
- 50:06Speaker 8: I don't know. There was there was a lot of
- 50:09Speaker 8: issues with. And yeah, it's just basic stuff like, yeah,
- 50:13Speaker 8: you might want to.
- 50:14Speaker 11: They probably spent all their money on Jake Busey.
- 50:16Speaker 9: That's true.
- 50:18Speaker 8: He's a name.
- 50:19Speaker 11: You got to know where you're going to put the money,
- 50:21Speaker 11: you know.
- 50:22Speaker 7: Now I just have this image of... I'm sure it
- 50:25Speaker 7: was one of those movies where it was just the budget.
- 50:26Speaker 7: It was just all interiors. You never saw an image
- 50:30Speaker 7: of a machine going.
- 50:31Speaker 8: In the ground or anything. Hey, there was some fine
- 50:34Speaker 8: CGI work by the end of it. Oh, there's some CGI.
- 50:37Speaker 4: I can just picture from what you said, Jake Ducey
- 50:41Speaker 4: getting into some interior set and then like, oh, hang on,
- 50:44Speaker 4: let me get the lights and pulling a chain.
- 50:46Speaker 7: From the ceiling.
- 50:48Speaker 8: And somebody clicks a flashlight and shines.
- 50:50Speaker 4: It on me.
- 50:50Speaker 7: It's a state of our technology.
- 50:51Speaker 2: Choo!
- 50:51Speaker 9: You know, the whole center of the earth thing, I'm
- 50:53Speaker 9: afraid I have to tell a story. You can edit
- 50:56Speaker 9: this out.
- 50:57Speaker 7: I don't care.
- 50:58Speaker 9: But Rick Wakeman from the band Yes back in the
- 51:02Speaker 9: 70s had an album, Journey to the Center of the Earth.
- 51:06Speaker 9: And I remember it, and I remember hearing it, and
- 51:10Speaker 9: it was narrated, but it was all fucked up. And
- 51:13Speaker 9: I think it's because he couldn't get rights. But, I
- 51:16Speaker 9: don't know, it seems like it'd be public domain, but
- 51:18Speaker 9: all the names were fucked up.
- 51:19Speaker 13: And it's like, why is it just all wrong?
- 51:22Speaker 9: Why is everything wrong?
- 51:24Speaker 8: He was wasted. What do you want?
- 51:26Speaker 9: But here's the thing. We were talking about VHS tapes.
- 51:31Speaker 9: He invested heavily in the world's most obscure musical instrument.
- 51:36Speaker 8: Oh, God.
- 51:37Speaker 9: I don't know that any of them were ever sold.
- 51:40Speaker 9: And he put like half a million dollars into them.
- 51:43Speaker 9: And they were based on VHS tapes.
- 51:46Speaker 15: Oh, God.
- 51:47Speaker 8: I might have heard about this.
- 51:48Speaker 9: Oh, wait.
- 51:48Speaker 13: No, no, no. They were modified 8-track tapes.
- 51:53Speaker 8: Yeah.
- 51:53Speaker 13: That's it.
- 51:54Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 51:55Speaker 7: That's it.
- 51:56Speaker 21: Of course.
- 51:56Speaker 9: But it was called the Byrotron, and it was to
- 51:59Speaker 9: simulate a Mellotron, which was an impossible thing to take
- 52:04Speaker 9: on tour. And it's the thing that they do, like
- 52:06Speaker 9: Strawberry Fields.
- 52:08Speaker 2: Oh.
- 52:09Speaker 8: Yeah. Yeah.
- 52:11Speaker 9: And it just has this endless sustain as an organ.
- 52:14Speaker 9: But it was a bitch to take on tour because
- 52:16Speaker 9: it was delicate and problematic. And this guy invented one
- 52:22Speaker 9: using eight-track tapes that would just have, each tape would
- 52:26Speaker 9: just have a tone on it.
- 52:27Speaker 8: I think I have heard about this thing.
- 52:30Speaker 14: Yeah.
- 52:30Speaker 7: Wow.
- 52:31Speaker 9: And then he had to mess with it so it
- 52:33Speaker 9: didn't turn over. He had to tinker with the thing.
- 52:36Speaker 9: And he developed one. and started building them, and Rick
- 52:40Speaker 9: Wakeman invested in them, except like somebody else in the
- 52:43Speaker 9: band would sometimes take a Loggins and Messina 8-track and
- 52:47Speaker 9: pop it in, and he'd be playing, and all of
- 52:49Speaker 9: a sudden it would be all fucked up.
- 52:51Speaker 8: Damn it. I told you to leave that alone.
- 52:53Speaker 9: But yeah, it didn't work out because then everything became
- 52:57Speaker 9: digital right then, right on the cusp of this thing
- 53:02Speaker 9: going on the market.
- 53:03Speaker 8: As he sunk his last dollar into it. Yeah.
- 53:06Speaker 9: Yeah, and so the inventor wound up living in a
- 53:09Speaker 9: trailer in Florida, and he didn't.
- 53:11Speaker 8: Own one of them.
- 53:13Speaker 9: And somebody donated one and gave it to him, and
- 53:16Speaker 9: he cried. He hadn't seen one for 20 years, but
- 53:22Speaker 9: he put so much work.
- 53:24Speaker 8: And effort in this. And it was bigger than his trailer.
- 53:28Speaker 9: Yeah, and there's some song by Yes that you can
- 53:31Speaker 9: hear it.
- 53:31Speaker 13: It's like the one.
- 53:33Speaker 9: moment in music history where you hear this.
- 53:37Speaker 8: That's mine, damn it.
- 53:38Speaker 9: That's mine.
- 53:40Speaker 13: It's a song called Don't Kill the Whale.
- 53:42Speaker 11: Wow.
- 53:43Speaker 9: And, like, right in the middle of.
- 53:45Speaker 8: It, there's, like, oh, the 70s.
- 53:47Speaker 4: I'm going to have to, like, next time I see
- 53:50Speaker 4: my dad, ask him about that song.
- 53:51Speaker 7: He'll just watch him geek out.
- 53:54Speaker 9: I mean, it's right here in a plumber.
- 53:57Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 53:58Speaker 9: Yeah, and that's the one place you can hear it. So,
- 54:00Speaker 9: You can edit all that out, but I was like,
- 54:03Speaker 9: I don't have a lot of geek stuff going on.
- 54:06Speaker 13: And Matt was like, oh, well, I know something.
- 54:08Speaker 8: I was going to turn it over to you now anyway. Oh, uh-oh.
- 54:12Speaker 8: You can continue on with that.
- 54:13Speaker 7: All right.
- 54:14Speaker 9: Let's see. Have I watched anything? I really don't know.
- 54:20Speaker 9: I have to write it down because I forget.
- 54:22Speaker 8: It's sad that I've gotten to that point.
- 54:23Speaker 13: I'm sort of.
- 54:24Speaker 9: Like in a geek crisis because nothing's really like hitting
- 54:29Speaker 9: the spot for me. I'm not really finding what I'm
- 54:31Speaker 9: looking for. And so, you know, I watch Friends with Kids.
- 54:39Speaker 14: What?
- 54:41Speaker 7: You know?
- 54:41Speaker 8: That's your own fault, really.
- 54:43Speaker 5: You watch that with your entire family or just your wife?
- 54:45Speaker 13: Just my wife.
- 54:48Speaker 8: Your kids have enough sense to avoid that.
- 54:51Speaker 13: No, I think my daughter had already seen it. Which
- 54:54Speaker 13: movie is that?
- 54:54Speaker 7: I feel like there's so many movies.
- 54:55Speaker 9: It's the one that came out nine months after Friends
- 54:59Speaker 9: with Benefits. I looked it up. Nine months after Friends
- 55:04Speaker 9: with Benefits, Friends with Kids.
- 55:06Speaker 8: It's just epic planning on their part.
- 55:08Speaker 7: I feel like there's a whole cluster. This past year,
- 55:11Speaker 7: movies that came out like that were like the poster.
- 55:14Speaker 4: It's like some people sitting at a picnic table, like,
- 55:16Speaker 4: who wants a wine?
- 55:17Speaker 8: It's like a bunch of actors.
- 55:19Speaker 7: There's a beach in the background. I feel like there's
- 55:20Speaker 7: like six movies, and I can't remember which ones.
- 55:23Speaker 8: No, I don't bother to assign.
- 55:25Speaker 13: And they're all sort of the same actors.
- 55:27Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 55:27Speaker 11: Yeah, well, they did that recently.
- 55:28Speaker 5: Okay, they did Two Snow Whites.
- 55:31Speaker 14: That always happens. Because, you know what my theory is?
- 55:34Speaker 11: Because there's always two movies, like Deep Impact and Armageddon.
- 55:38Speaker 7: Yeah, I agree.
- 55:39Speaker 11: Now, I read about that.
- 55:40Speaker 14: And apparently there was a script that was floating around
- 55:42Speaker 14: Hollywood that was like a disaster-type film about that. And then,
- 55:46Speaker 14: of course, that person got rejected and said, no, we're
- 55:49Speaker 14: not going to buy your script. And then they just
- 55:51Speaker 14: hire people in each of the companies to write a
- 55:56Speaker 14: similar story. So I think a lot of this, they
- 55:59Speaker 14: double up. There's just some writer who writes a script,
- 56:02Speaker 14: and either it's not good or it is good, but
- 56:04Speaker 14: they just want to have it be developed in-house so
- 56:07Speaker 14: they don't have to actually spend... money to buy it,
- 56:09Speaker 14: and then they just develop the properties.
- 56:12Speaker 8: Thank God, because then we get not just Volcano, but
- 56:14Speaker 8: also Dante's Peak.
- 56:16Speaker 11: Right, right.
- 56:17Speaker 8: It's a good thing.
- 56:18Speaker 4: That was the first, like, PG-13 movie I saw in
- 56:22Speaker 4: the theater.
- 56:24Speaker 7: It was too intense. For a long time, my parents
- 56:26Speaker 7: did a good job of, like, holding me back from, like, violence.
- 56:29Speaker 8: And then what happened?
- 56:30Speaker 7: And then, like, they just stopped caring. They just let
- 56:34Speaker 7: me watch whatever.
- 56:34Speaker 14: The thing about Dante's Peak is, like, First of all,
- 56:38Speaker 14: Pierce Brosnan is just the perfect geologist.
- 56:41Speaker 11: And secondly, geologists are just natural heroes. You know what
- 56:45Speaker 11: I mean?
- 56:45Speaker 21: Well, sure.
- 56:45Speaker 11: If you think about it.
- 56:46Speaker 14: If you're going to cast your perfect action star.
- 56:51Speaker 11: Jake Beasley.
- 56:52Speaker 14: You're going to want to pick a geologist to save
- 56:56Speaker 14: the planet.
- 56:57Speaker 7: Sure. That would make sense. Didn't also the horrible Godzilla... like,
- 57:04Speaker 7: Raffi Broderick was a geologist.
- 57:06Speaker 4: Like, that's a comment, like, in, like, the late, like, disaster.
- 57:10Speaker 7: By the geologists! We need him to get on this.
- 57:12Speaker 8: It's such a.
- 57:12Speaker 9: It's like how, for a while, in romantic comedies, the
- 57:15Speaker 9: guy was always an architect. That was, like, that was
- 57:19Speaker 9: the set.
- 57:20Speaker 11: It's still that way.
- 57:21Speaker 7: Like, I was going to say, actually, I think I
- 57:23Speaker 7: saw Prince of Memphis, I think, like, Justin Timberlake's character.
- 57:27Speaker 7: He was an architect. Or, no, he was an ad guy.
- 57:28Speaker 8: Well, that's what I was going to say. That or
- 57:30Speaker 8: always an advertising agent.
- 57:31Speaker 2: Yeah, that's right.
- 57:32Speaker 8: It's one or the other.
- 57:33Speaker 7: But that's true. It really is architect.
- 57:36Speaker 8: Unlike any of those movies, or even TV shows, there
- 57:38Speaker 8: was that run of they just need, eh, it's just
- 57:42Speaker 8: sort of a job. It's not really going to play
- 57:44Speaker 8: too much into this. Well, the architect, advertising agent.
- 57:48Speaker 9: The one that really exploited that was Bewitched, because no
- 57:51Speaker 9: matter what crazy magic thing was going on, you could
- 57:54Speaker 9: always go, it's an ad campaign.
- 57:57Speaker 11: People go, oh.
- 57:59Speaker 8: They work that in, I don't know.
- 58:00Speaker 9: There's an elephant in your living room and Napoleon is
- 58:04Speaker 9: right there.
- 58:05Speaker 13: It's an ad campaign.
- 58:07Speaker 8: I'm pretty sure most people didn't even realize those ads
- 58:10Speaker 8: were going on or put together by somebody until Bewitched
- 58:13Speaker 8: came along. And they went, hey, wait, we do have
- 58:15Speaker 8: a lot of ads going on right now.
- 58:19Speaker 11: One movie I just saw, which.
- 58:21Speaker 14: I hadn't seen since it came out was Junior, starring
- 58:25Speaker 14: Arnold Schwarzenegger.
- 58:26Speaker 7: Very good performance by Arnold Schwarzenegger.
- 58:29Speaker 8: I'm sorry about that.
- 58:31Speaker 14: That's the surprising thing about the film, is that it, A,
- 58:35Speaker 14: takes itself fairly seriously. It's directed by Ivan Reitman, so
- 58:41Speaker 14: he's a quality director. And Arnold Schwarzenegger actually pulls in.
- 58:46Speaker 11: I think it's because....
- 58:49Speaker 14: He's so masculine that to, for him to play such
- 58:54Speaker 14: a feminine character, the balance is just perfect.
- 58:58Speaker 11: You know, and there's so much subtlety going on in
- 59:00Speaker 11: his performance.
- 59:01Speaker 14: I think it's his best performance of his entire.
- 59:04Speaker 12: Wow.
- 59:05Speaker 11: His entire work.
- 59:06Speaker 4: From inside and he's just like yeah like there's a
- 59:09Speaker 4: balance there he just kind of comes off as like
- 59:10Speaker 4: a normal dude it's it really is like also in
- 59:14Speaker 4: twins like it wasn't that i've been riding as well
- 59:17Speaker 4: yeah yeah sorry he was really underrated in that.
- 59:20Speaker 14: One too.
- 59:22Speaker 8: He still gets so much for that So much shit
- 59:24Speaker 8: for those.
- 59:25Speaker 2: Yeah. Yeah. Yeah.
- 59:49Speaker 9: Yeah, that makes me feel elitist because I think they
- 59:52Speaker 9: look like idiots.
- 59:53Speaker 8: They do.
- 59:54Speaker 5: Your family is always saying, like, let's all wear the
- 59:57Speaker 5: same color today. And they're, like, they're wet cats right now.
- 1:00:02Speaker 9: Yeah doesn't that make it just so much more cozy
- 1:00:10Speaker 9: i'm gonna go get some other.
- 1:00:11Speaker 8: Some more nice warm coffee and yeah.
- 1:00:14Speaker 4: Yeah it's like the old timey christmas movie where like
- 1:00:17Speaker 4: some sad you know person down his luck looks in
- 1:00:19Speaker 4: the display window like a restaurant it's snowing.
- 1:00:22Speaker 9: And there's something oh man I was in Indianapolis a
- 1:00:27Speaker 9: couple of weeks ago, and they tried to set the
- 1:00:30Speaker 9: Zumba world record. They had this huge crowd. I was
- 1:00:36Speaker 9: just walking around killing time while my daughter was at
- 1:00:39Speaker 9: a college thing, and they had this huge crowd out
- 1:00:42Speaker 9: in 100-degree heat.
- 1:00:43Speaker 13: And they're all doing Zumba.
- 1:00:46Speaker 9: In Indianapolis of all places. I have a short film
- 1:00:51Speaker 9: of it.
- 1:00:52Speaker 8: I'm there, like, you can see it behind me.
- 1:00:55Speaker 9: And I'm like, and I take a nap.
- 1:00:59Speaker 13: And it's heaven.
- 1:01:00Speaker 9: Because in heaven, you will find a cool bit of
- 1:01:04Speaker 9: shade and take a nap while people are trying to
- 1:01:07Speaker 9: set a world record for exercise in the hot sun.
- 1:01:12Speaker 9: It just made it feel so good that they were
- 1:01:15Speaker 9: out there doing whatever that is. I don't know what
- 1:01:18Speaker 9: it is.
- 1:01:19Speaker 8: That's not my heaven. Not in my heaven. There'll be
- 1:01:24Speaker 8: no Zumba damage.
- 1:01:26Speaker 9: I've never heard of it before, and all of a
- 1:01:28Speaker 9: sudden I'm surrounded with crazy people doing it.
- 1:01:30Speaker 8: I'm still thoroughly convinced it's a toy for a toddler.
- 1:01:33Speaker 7: I'm sorry.
- 1:01:34Speaker 9: I thought it was like one of those vacuum cleaners
- 1:01:36Speaker 9: that went around by itself.
- 1:01:39Speaker 13: But it was faster than a Roomba.
- 1:01:44Speaker 8: Listen, the upgrade model.
- 1:01:47Speaker 9: Oh, and I guess this is geeky.
- 1:01:51Speaker 13: I wrote a segue.
- 1:01:52Speaker 2: Uh-oh.
- 1:01:53Speaker 9: Have you ever written a segue?
- 1:01:55Speaker 11: I have in a play.
- 1:01:57Speaker 9: Holy cow.
- 1:01:58Speaker 14: It was Electra. It was a sort of strange, modern
- 1:02:07Speaker 14: reimagining of Electra.
- 1:02:10Speaker 11: And the queen is on a segue in that one.
- 1:02:14Speaker 11: So I just wrote it around. It's pretty fun.
- 1:02:16Speaker 8: This was Starlight Express.
- 1:02:18Speaker 11: I wasn't the queen, but backstage, everyone had to go live.
- 1:02:22Speaker 11: So do you think this is a.
- 1:02:23Speaker 5: Good investment, the segway? Should we all have segways?
- 1:02:27Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 1:02:27Speaker 9: The guy told me there were like 4,000 used. And
- 1:02:32Speaker 9: I'm like seriously thinking about it because it was so fun. Well,
- 1:02:37Speaker 9: the thing that made it so magical is we were
- 1:02:39Speaker 9: at where my daughter's going to go to college. Like
- 1:02:42Speaker 9: in back of her area building, there's just like this
- 1:02:45Speaker 9: big empty parking lot and there's nothing. But it turns
- 1:02:49Speaker 9: out we went to this park she wanted to see,
- 1:02:52Speaker 9: like White River Park. And we're walking around in it
- 1:02:56Speaker 9: and we go to this cafe at the museum and
- 1:02:58Speaker 9: there's canals and gondolas. And I look over and it's like,
- 1:03:02Speaker 9: isn't that your building over there?
- 1:03:03Speaker 5: How did we get here?
- 1:03:06Speaker 9: And it's like right there. And you can't see it
- 1:03:09Speaker 9: from where she's going to be going to college every day.
- 1:03:13Speaker 9: There's this whole vast natural cheat date romance preserve back there.
- 1:03:20Speaker 5: I'm sure all the freshmen knew about it.
- 1:03:23Speaker 8: Yeah.
- 1:03:24Speaker 7: They never mentioned it to us.
- 1:03:25Speaker 20: We've been on tours of this school and looked around.
- 1:03:29Speaker 20: They don't say, oh, yeah, well, there's the law building
- 1:03:32Speaker 20: in the library. There's parking over here. And there's a
- 1:03:34Speaker 20: magical fucking kingdom.
- 1:03:36Speaker 8: Over there you might like.
- 1:03:37Speaker 13: Nobody mentioned it.
- 1:03:39Speaker 8: And we go through it on segways. This really should
- 1:03:43Speaker 8: be in the brochure.
- 1:03:44Speaker 14: Maybe it's over at an Indian burial ground or something.
- 1:03:48Speaker 13: It's something crazy.
- 1:03:51Speaker 9: And so then I go back to the building and
- 1:03:53Speaker 9: I look over there and there's like a parking lot.
- 1:03:57Speaker 8: And you can't see.
- 1:04:00Speaker 13: You cannot see it.
- 1:04:02Speaker 9: And you walk up to this ledge and look down.
- 1:04:06Speaker 9: And down, there's a canal. And it's thriving with people
- 1:04:11Speaker 9: doing stuff.
- 1:04:13Speaker 13: Then you get back like 20 feet.
- 1:04:14Speaker 2: There's nothing.
- 1:04:16Speaker 9: It looks like an industrial site.
- 1:04:19Speaker 13: It's bizarre.
- 1:04:19Speaker 11: The best things in life have to be hidden.
- 1:04:22Speaker 14: I guess.
- 1:04:22Speaker 11: Because you've got to be the one to seek it.
- 1:04:24Speaker 8: Like Nazis at the center of the earth.
- 1:04:26Speaker 7: Nazis at the center of the earth. The best things
- 1:04:30Speaker 7: in life.
- 1:04:31Speaker 8: Are Nazis at the center of the earth.
- 1:04:37Speaker 9: I saw that movie, Friends with Kids, and it was
- 1:04:40Speaker 9: like somebody trying to do one of those, like a
- 1:04:45Speaker 9: Judd Apatow. And your guy at Wild and Wooly told me,
- 1:04:51Speaker 9: He really liked the movie.
- 1:04:52Speaker 8: That bastard.
- 1:04:54Speaker 7: Ben was raving about it.
- 1:04:55Speaker 9: But I noticed he didn't put his little Creech likes this.
- 1:04:59Speaker 2: He's very specific.
- 1:05:00Speaker 9: So what does that mean?
- 1:05:01Speaker 7: Yeah, exactly.
- 1:05:02Speaker 9: He liked it enough to tell me he liked it,
- 1:05:05Speaker 9: but not enough to commit.
- 1:05:07Speaker 7: I've learned the difference between Ben.
- 1:05:09Speaker 4: Like the other workers there, like, they'll, I think the
- 1:05:12Speaker 4: other workers, like, they'll just, like, if they like it,
- 1:05:13Speaker 4: they'll just, like, oh, yeah, I'll put a sticker, like, Ben,
- 1:05:15Speaker 4: he's very, just.
- 1:05:16Speaker 7: Like, he puts a lot of thought, even if he
- 1:05:18Speaker 7: likes me, I won't be able to deserve a sticker, like,
- 1:05:21Speaker 7: it has to be special, right?
- 1:05:22Speaker 9: Yeah, it's his criterion collection.
- 1:05:24Speaker 4: Exactly, like, me and him, like, we bond, like, bonded
- 1:05:27Speaker 4: over our love for the movie Drive, and, like, if
- 1:05:29Speaker 4: you go there, like, there's, like, three creeps.
- 1:05:31Speaker 7: Like, in the movie Drive, and, like, yes!
- 1:05:34Speaker 8: You'll notice he also disappeared after that. He told you
- 1:05:37Speaker 8: to watch that movie and skip town.
- 1:05:39Speaker 9: Well, you know, it was really okay. It had some
- 1:05:43Speaker 9: funny parts, and there are a lot of good actors.
- 1:05:45Speaker 9: But it was like I suspected. And it's interesting to
- 1:05:50Speaker 9: watch a movie like that because it's calculated for... It
- 1:05:55Speaker 9: kind of tells you something about the culture, at least
- 1:05:58Speaker 9: what somebody thinks popular culture is at this moment.
- 1:06:03Speaker 8: Those are interesting, because it's weird when you're living in them,
- 1:06:05Speaker 8: but when we go back and watch these movies from
- 1:06:07Speaker 8: the 60s and the 70s and even the 80s, where
- 1:06:10Speaker 8: it's a very different thing because you can see what
- 1:06:13Speaker 8: they're doing and you see all the strings that were
- 1:06:15Speaker 8: at work then that you aren't always as aware of
- 1:06:17Speaker 8: when it's a current movie.
- 1:06:19Speaker 9: Yeah, and I didn't really feel that aware of it
- 1:06:21Speaker 9: as the movie was going along, but then right after
- 1:06:24Speaker 9: it's over I look back and it's like, oh, that's just,
- 1:06:28Speaker 9: they think people want to see something that's smutty but heartwarming.
- 1:06:34Speaker 9: And also you just know where the movie is going
- 1:06:38Speaker 9: as soon as they set it up. You can't look
- 1:06:41Speaker 9: the other way and not see how it's.
- 1:06:43Speaker 13: Going to end.
- 1:06:45Speaker 9: I don't know.
- 1:06:45Speaker 2: It's all right.
- 1:06:46Speaker 9: But it seems calculated. Also, the woman in it is
- 1:06:50Speaker 9: just creepy.
- 1:06:52Speaker 7: Is it Megan Fox?
- 1:06:55Speaker 8: No.
- 1:06:55Speaker 10: It's a woman that's been dating for 20 years, Don
- 1:06:59Speaker 10: Draper from Batman.
- 1:07:00Speaker 9: Is it?
- 1:07:01Speaker 5: I think that's who you mean.
- 1:07:02Speaker 9: Really? She's like an actress you haven't seen. Why would
- 1:07:04Speaker 9: he be dating her?
- 1:07:07Speaker 8: Yeah, he is.
- 1:07:08Speaker 7: Okay, yes, that's her. And she wrote and directed it. Yes,
- 1:07:14Speaker 7: that's her. She was in Kissing Jessica Stein or something
- 1:07:19Speaker 7: like that.
- 1:07:20Speaker 2: Oh, really?
- 1:07:20Speaker 8: I actually saw that, yeah.
- 1:07:24Speaker 9: Yeah, I couldn't get around her. She's just... creepy there's
- 1:07:29Speaker 9: something about her.
- 1:07:30Speaker 5: That's who Don Draper really is.
- 1:07:32Speaker 4: Oh boy oh my god look it up it's been
- 1:07:36Speaker 4: like 20.
- 1:07:37Speaker 9: Years oh man I wouldn't even do.
- 1:07:39Speaker 16: Her not even a one time and I'm easy as
- 1:07:43Speaker 16: hell I've always thought that Jennifer Westfeld really Don Draper
- 1:07:50Speaker 16: well what's.
- 1:07:51Speaker 5: His real name Ham.
- 1:07:52Speaker 9: Something Ham John Ham yeah this is her There's just
- 1:07:56Speaker 9: something reptilian about her.
- 1:07:59Speaker 7: Is this.
- 1:08:00Speaker 9: And, I mean, I'm sure she's a really nice person,
- 1:08:03Speaker 9: and if I knew her, I could.
- 1:08:04Speaker 7: Oh, wait, that's not the... Oh, okay, no. I thought
- 1:08:06Speaker 7: that was the.
- 1:08:06Speaker 9: Girl who's on.
- 1:08:07Speaker 7: I don't know her name.
- 1:08:09Speaker 2: She's on Lost.
- 1:08:10Speaker 4: But it's full of, like, the characters on the show
- 1:08:12Speaker 4: just make the weirdest faces, and, like, Julia, like, every
- 1:08:14Speaker 4: time she shows up, she's.
- 1:08:15Speaker 7: Like, we have to get off this island.
- 1:08:17Speaker 9: Like, Julia's near.
- 1:08:19Speaker 7: Her eyebrows are really.
- 1:08:20Speaker 11: Like, concerned.
- 1:08:21Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 1:08:22Speaker 9: Well, that's the vibe I get from her. It's like
- 1:08:24Speaker 9: she's had a lot of surgery or something. There's something creepy.
- 1:08:29Speaker 11: And I don't know.
- 1:08:32Speaker 9: And I mean, I'll sleep with anyone, but I wouldn't
- 1:08:36Speaker 9: do her.
- 1:08:37Speaker 8: Well, see, it's weird because she's the lead in Kissing
- 1:08:40Speaker 8: Jessica Stein, isn't she?
- 1:08:41Speaker 2: No.
- 1:08:42Speaker 9: I knew she got the part by sleeping with the director,
- 1:08:46Speaker 9: which she must have because it's her.
- 1:08:49Speaker 8: I remember seeing that they were, they were doing some
- 1:08:51Speaker 8: sort of like showing of that movie at the theater.
- 1:08:54Speaker 8: And I ended up just ended. I had no idea
- 1:08:56Speaker 8: what it was and end up going to it and
- 1:08:57Speaker 8: it's like that was probably the main hurdle it's like
- 1:08:59Speaker 8: I think they were using the gimmick of some sort
- 1:09:02Speaker 8: of weird lesbian thing and they thought that was gonna
- 1:09:04Speaker 8: rope people in but I'm like that's not really the
- 1:09:07Speaker 8: issue with this is her like she's just not Like,
- 1:09:10Speaker 8: even in that, there's this weird block where you're just like, yeah,
- 1:09:14Speaker 8: see where the story's going, but I'm kind of not
- 1:09:16Speaker 8: on board with her, and I don't even know specifically
- 1:09:18Speaker 8: what it was. So it's funny, that was when it
- 1:09:20Speaker 8: first came out.
- 1:09:21Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 1:09:21Speaker 8: That was a long time ago, and I still had
- 1:09:23Speaker 8: that exact same reaction to her.
- 1:09:24Speaker 13: Yeah, and the guy is great, the guy from Party Down.
- 1:09:29Speaker 2: Oh. Yeah. Yeah.
- 1:09:31Speaker 9: Parks and Rec guy. Yeah.
- 1:09:33Speaker 7: Really funny.
- 1:09:34Speaker 9: And he's great for that because he's like... good-looking, but
- 1:09:39Speaker 9: in a way that looks sort of normal.
- 1:09:42Speaker 8: Maybe his nose is a little big.
- 1:09:44Speaker 13: He has a small mouth.
- 1:09:46Speaker 9: Like, a proportion doesn't really work.
- 1:09:48Speaker 8: Well, it throws it off when he wears those shoes.
- 1:09:54Speaker 9: I don't know.
- 1:09:56Speaker 8: I draw from life a lot. And I do portraits.
- 1:10:10Speaker 13: I'm looking at him, and he doesn't fit together.
- 1:10:12Speaker 9: His hair is too big for his head. And on
- 1:10:14Speaker 9: Party Down, he wears those little shirts.
- 1:10:17Speaker 8: I was going to ask, does he at least wear
- 1:10:18Speaker 8: a normal-sized shirt in this thing?
- 1:10:20Speaker 9: It's like he's aware of it, and he's playing with it.
- 1:10:22Speaker 9: And even in the movie, at some point, he talks
- 1:10:24Speaker 9: about his nose. From some angles, I think it's okay,
- 1:10:27Speaker 9: but then other times, it's like, Wow, they wrote it
- 1:10:30Speaker 9: for him.
- 1:10:31Speaker 5: Yeah.
- 1:10:32Speaker 9: Adam Scott.
- 1:10:33Speaker 13: But he's really.
- 1:10:34Speaker 8: I really like Adam Scott.
- 1:10:35Speaker 9: He's really charming.
- 1:10:35Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 1:10:36Speaker 13: And he's really good.
- 1:10:37Speaker 9: And a lot of people in the movie are good.
- 1:10:39Speaker 9: It just winds up, it feels calculated. And then there's
- 1:10:43Speaker 9: the her issue. That she's just not warm. She's not likable.
- 1:10:48Speaker 13: She's scary.
- 1:10:50Speaker 7: I feel like those movies, like those... I don't know,
- 1:10:53Speaker 7: I guess like you said, like that kind of a
- 1:10:55Speaker 7: knockoff epitaph or like the.
- 1:10:56Speaker 19: Yeah.
- 1:10:57Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 1:10:58Speaker 4: Like you don't like it's too serious to be like
- 1:11:00Speaker 4: kind of an apatow genre but it's like a bunch
- 1:11:02Speaker 4: of friends like eating dinner like it's yeah like I
- 1:11:07Speaker 4: said the cover is then at a picnic table going hey.
- 1:11:10Speaker 7: Wine glasses yeah and like.
- 1:11:12Speaker 4: I was like I feel like those are like always
- 1:11:13Speaker 4: just weirdly miscast and a lot of the performances.
- 1:11:17Speaker 7: Are kind of forced but there's usually one or two.
- 1:11:18Speaker 4: People who are really good yeah but well maybe they
- 1:11:22Speaker 4: like when they get the scripts they themselves aren't taking
- 1:11:24Speaker 4: it too seriously so that might be part of their performance.
- 1:11:28Speaker 7: There is phoning in.
- 1:11:30Speaker 9: I think they did really pretty well, but the writing
- 1:11:33Speaker 9: and just the storytelling is like so calculated you can't
- 1:11:37Speaker 9: get over it. Because it's basically people are trying to
- 1:11:41Speaker 9: do something different from traditional relationships. And in the end,
- 1:11:47Speaker 9: they'll find out what they really wanted all along. It's like,
- 1:11:53Speaker 9: you know, that make a porno movie.
- 1:11:57Speaker 14: Yeah, exactly.
- 1:11:58Speaker 8: Yeah, it's like that.
- 1:12:01Speaker 9: Except it's calculated for, I don't know.
- 1:12:05Speaker 4: It's like the ending of all those movies is always,
- 1:12:07Speaker 4: it's like they're saying, it's like, oh, that's life, isn't it?
- 1:12:10Speaker 7: You know, like, the so-and-so doesn't.
- 1:12:13Speaker 4: Get together, and they stay with, you know, it's so-and-so relationship,
- 1:12:17Speaker 4: and it's, I don't know.
- 1:12:20Speaker 8: Well, that just sucks.
- 1:12:21Speaker 22: I still need to see it, though, just because I
- 1:12:23Speaker 22: can't remember which poster.
- 1:12:25Speaker 8: Well, I'm trying to think. All I can think of
- 1:12:27Speaker 8: is that newer one that just had J-Lo and all
- 1:12:29Speaker 8: the girls getting pregnant.
- 1:12:30Speaker 13: Oh, and that guy in it.
- 1:12:31Speaker 9: It sounds just like that movie.
- 1:12:33Speaker 8: Yeah, it sounds exactly like that movie.
- 1:12:37Speaker 9: Yeah. Yeah, I think that's the better version.
- 1:12:39Speaker 4: There needs to be a generic, like I said, the
- 1:12:42Speaker 4: sci-fi original knockoff.
- 1:12:45Speaker 7: Just, like, Transmorphers, like, New York Friends.
- 1:12:48Speaker 8: Well, is this the category for the, like, you know.
- 1:12:50Speaker 4: It has Velociraptors thrown in for good measure.
- 1:12:52Speaker 8: Thriller with a strong female lead. This will be, like,
- 1:12:54Speaker 8: New York Friends. Snarky.
- 1:12:57Speaker 9: Well, didn't they do that? They did that with Friends
- 1:12:59Speaker 9: with Benefits, and.
- 1:13:00Speaker 13: Then they did the other one.
- 1:13:01Speaker 7: The Natalie Portman one.
- 1:13:02Speaker 9: Yeah. Which I actually saw.
- 1:13:05Speaker 8: I saw them both, and.
- 1:13:06Speaker 7: I actually thought.
- 1:13:07Speaker 4: I thought the Natalie Portman one would be the better one,
- 1:13:09Speaker 4: but actually the Mila Kunis just seemed like it was better.
- 1:13:11Speaker 9: Because you can.
- 1:13:12Speaker 13: The Black Swan cast.
- 1:13:14Speaker 8: You guys split up and do the same movie get
- 1:13:18Speaker 8: on it and it's because Mila Kunis is completely believable
- 1:13:23Speaker 8: being like sexual and Natalie Portman.
- 1:13:27Speaker 9: Isn't she just doesn't seem like she wants to share
- 1:13:30Speaker 9: that aspect of herself with an audience well I don't
- 1:13:36Speaker 9: know I really don't know but you.
- 1:13:39Speaker 22: Know mila you just totally believe it you know yeah
- 1:13:43Speaker 22: she seems comfortable but uh natalie portman whenever she goes
- 1:13:48Speaker 22: that's sexy you just don't.
- 1:13:50Speaker 9: Believe it it's like what is she looking at a
- 1:13:53Speaker 9: salad what is she talking about i guess.
- 1:13:57Speaker 14: A little too classy seems to be the performance is
- 1:14:00Speaker 14: uh It's when she does the rap video for SNL.
- 1:14:04Speaker 8: Oh, that's her finest moment. Maybe she needs to play.
- 1:14:06Speaker 11: A really angry character. I don't know. She kind of
- 1:14:09Speaker 11: pulled that one off.
- 1:14:10Speaker 9: I thought she was just playing brilliant in The Professional.
- 1:14:14Speaker 8: Oh, yeah.
- 1:14:15Speaker 9: It's like my favorite thing she ever did.
- 1:14:17Speaker 2: She was.
- 1:14:18Speaker 9: Oh, my God. What a good movie.
- 1:14:20Speaker 8: That's so good.
- 1:14:20Speaker 7: That's definitely Luc Besson. He knows his best.
- 1:14:23Speaker 8: That just sets up your career, though. When you're that
- 1:14:26Speaker 8: damn good, that young.
- 1:14:27Speaker 7: It's just like, oh, shit.
- 1:14:29Speaker 8: Now you've got to go make freaking Star Wars movies.
- 1:14:31Speaker 9: I want somebody to tell me something like that I
- 1:14:34Speaker 9: can watch.
- 1:14:34Speaker 4: It's one of those really iconic performances by a kid
- 1:14:38Speaker 4: in a movie, like the kid in E.T.
- 1:14:40Speaker 7: That are just like, wow.
- 1:14:41Speaker 11: That was an act.
- 1:14:42Speaker 5: They were the characters.
- 1:14:46Speaker 9: That's one of my favorite badass action picture things ever.
- 1:14:50Speaker 8: Well, it's everything about it. That's another one of those.
- 1:14:53Speaker 8: Gary Oldman is amazing in that movie.
- 1:14:56Speaker 9: Everything about that movie was so good.
- 1:14:59Speaker 13: It's awesome.
- 1:15:00Speaker 10: You're saying they were better than Daniel Radcliffe in the
- 1:15:03Speaker 10: first Harry Potter?
- 1:15:05Speaker 5: That's my ultimate hit performance.
- 1:15:08Speaker 7: I don't know.
- 1:15:10Speaker 8: That whole cast thing.
- 1:15:12Speaker 9: They were all good when they were babies.
- 1:15:15Speaker 8: That's what I was going to say.
- 1:15:16Speaker 9: You go back and watch them when they were little.
- 1:15:18Speaker 9: That's amazing.
- 1:15:20Speaker 7: That's one thing that's amazing about the Harry Potter movies.
- 1:15:22Speaker 7: You watch an.
- 1:15:24Speaker 4: Entire cast grow up on screen.
- 1:15:27Speaker 5: With the best adult actors possible.
- 1:15:30Speaker 7: It's almost like a documentary. If you just watch them
- 1:15:32Speaker 7: all together, it's weird.
- 1:15:35Speaker 4: Yeah, but like I was going to say, the first
- 1:15:36Speaker 4: area part would be like, I'd have to actually go
- 1:15:38Speaker 4: back and watch it with the sound on. Because I've
- 1:15:40Speaker 4: watched it a bunch of times, but it's been the
- 1:15:43Speaker 4: Dear Eater Wizard people, like audio.
- 1:15:44Speaker 7: I don't know if you all watched.
- 1:15:46Speaker 4: It where that guy was.
- 1:15:47Speaker 9: You can download it on the internet.
- 1:15:49Speaker 7: This guy named Brad Neely, he's a genius, I think.
- 1:15:52Speaker 7: He's hilarious.
- 1:15:52Speaker 4: He did this audio commentary where he narrates the entire movie.
- 1:15:56Speaker 7: And this voice where he talks like this, and just.
- 1:15:59Speaker 11: Over and over. Oh, I think I've heard of that.
- 1:16:02Speaker 4: Yeah, and me and my friends, we make a tradition
- 1:16:04Speaker 4: where we watch it every New Year's with that audio.
- 1:16:07Speaker 8: We just watch the first Harry Potter on mute.
- 1:16:09Speaker 4: And it's so hilarious because of the timing. Because his
- 1:16:16Speaker 4: mean cousin or whatever.
- 1:16:17Speaker 7: right.
- 1:16:18Speaker 23: Dudley yeah Dudley the narrator guy who calls his character
- 1:16:22Speaker 23: beefy weepy and like the scene where like there's a
- 1:16:25Speaker 23: scene where he like pops in into the house and
- 1:16:27Speaker 23: he has like a ragtime hat on for whatever reason
- 1:16:30Speaker 23: and right when that happens like Brad Neely just goes.
- 1:16:33Speaker 12: Then ragtime beefy weepy jumped in like.
- 1:16:36Speaker 7: You see him come in with like a ragtime hat
- 1:16:38Speaker 7: and it's just.
- 1:16:38Speaker 8: So funny people have a lot of time on their
- 1:16:42Speaker 8: hands yeah I was.
- 1:16:44Speaker 7: Gonna say like recorded the whole thing non-stop.
- 1:16:47Speaker 14: My sister and I used to love to just turn
- 1:16:51Speaker 14: whatever station we were watching, just turn it on mute
- 1:16:53Speaker 14: and do the voices for the characters.
- 1:16:55Speaker 7: It's so much fun just talking over a movie. I
- 1:16:58Speaker 7: think we did that last movie I had a blast with.
- 1:17:01Speaker 15: That was Melancholia.
- 1:17:02Speaker 4: It's a good movie, but we were just trashing it
- 1:17:08Speaker 4: the whole time and just talking stupid voices.
- 1:17:10Speaker 7: We made a happy movie. We made a happy movie.
- 1:17:13Speaker 4: That was the main goal, was just to have a
- 1:17:16Speaker 4: good time watching a Lars von Trier movie. Because it
- 1:17:18Speaker 4: was a bunch of people, and if you're just with
- 1:17:20Speaker 4: a group of friends, it becomes dead silent.
- 1:17:23Speaker 7: Watching a Lars von Trier movie.
- 1:17:25Speaker 4: Kind of kills the mood, so we just kind of
- 1:17:26Speaker 4: turned it down and just drank beers and made fun
- 1:17:29Speaker 4: of it.
- 1:17:29Speaker 10: You should do that with the movie I just saw, Shame.
- 1:17:34Speaker 7: Shame would be.
- 1:17:36Speaker 8: Exactly.
- 1:17:36Speaker 4: Shame is like one of the most bummer movies ever.
- 1:17:38Speaker 4: If someone just like, get the mystery science theater guys
- 1:17:40Speaker 4: on that and see what they do with it.
- 1:17:43Speaker 8: It's funny how mainstream that's become now. Like, not just,
- 1:17:47Speaker 8: I mean, they were doing it forever, and then, like, again,
- 1:17:50Speaker 8: now both halves of that show are still doing it,
- 1:17:52Speaker 8: but now, like, there's so many cities now where they're
- 1:17:54Speaker 8: doing live versions of that, where they just have whoever
- 1:17:58Speaker 8: puts it together gets up there and gets on a
- 1:17:59Speaker 8: mic and just kind of makes fun of it.
- 1:18:02Speaker 4: Yeah.
- 1:18:02Speaker 7: Like, talking over movies. It's great.
- 1:18:04Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 1:18:05Speaker 8: It's interesting that it caught on.
- 1:18:06Speaker 11: They're generally better than the movies themselves.
- 1:18:09Speaker 7: Exactly. That's the thing. They always watch horrible B-movies that
- 1:18:12Speaker 7: you've never heard of.
- 1:18:13Speaker 5: But do movies take themselves too seriously? Like, what did
- 1:18:15Speaker 5: we see in Austin when we were filming your film?
- 1:18:18Speaker 5: We saw Total Rico.
- 1:18:20Speaker 7: They were doing that?
- 1:18:21Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 1:18:22Speaker 7: Total Rico does have some funny... The original?
- 1:18:24Speaker 11: The original. I had no idea what it was.
- 1:18:26Speaker 5: There was like a sing-along part, a drinking part.
- 1:18:28Speaker 11: Yeah, they were like.
- 1:18:31Speaker 9: So, my kid is turning 16 in a couple of days,
- 1:18:35Speaker 9: and he has a girlfriend now.
- 1:18:39Speaker 7: Uh-oh.
- 1:18:41Speaker 9: And the other night, they're getting to know each other's movies, Uh-oh.
- 1:18:44Speaker 9: And she had never seen Pulp Fiction. And he had
- 1:18:49Speaker 9: never seen Phantom of the Opera.
- 1:18:51Speaker 7: Oh, no.
- 1:18:52Speaker 8: Which version?
- 1:18:54Speaker 13: Well, she's a singer.
- 1:18:56Speaker 9: And it was the movie when they were on long
- 1:19:00Speaker 9: car trips they would watch because it went on forever.
- 1:19:03Speaker 9: So they watch both of them, and I'm in the
- 1:19:05Speaker 9: room in and out, and they're sort of curled up together.
- 1:19:11Speaker 9: on the couch and watching these movies and apparently both
- 1:19:14Speaker 9: of them are equally hilarious to the wrong person that's
- 1:19:21Speaker 9: great no to her she's watching pulp fiction and laughing
- 1:19:26Speaker 9: like every few minutes he's over.
- 1:19:27Speaker 13: There muttering some this.
- 1:19:30Speaker 9: And she's laughing yeah.
- 1:19:33Speaker 7: That movie's a blast.
- 1:19:34Speaker 9: Well, but then also in places she makes noises like
- 1:19:37Speaker 9: my daughter does when she watches an intense movie. But
- 1:19:43Speaker 9: it was just funny how both of them became the
- 1:19:45Speaker 9: same movie. Phantom of the Opera and Pulp Fiction.
- 1:19:49Speaker 3: Interesting.
- 1:19:50Speaker 9: Because they're like boyfriend and girlfriend and they're muttering to
- 1:19:55Speaker 9: each other.
- 1:19:55Speaker 10: To her, probably the experience was about cuddling and they
- 1:19:58Speaker 10: were just like images playing on the screen and.
- 1:20:01Speaker 5: That's how she acts.
- 1:20:03Speaker 9: I think they actually followed them, the logic of the movies,
- 1:20:07Speaker 9: and just overhearing Pulp Fiction again, sort of halfway watching it,
- 1:20:14Speaker 9: I never really did know how good the writing was,
- 1:20:16Speaker 9: but writing is really good.
- 1:20:19Speaker 8: It's go ahead oh okay okay.
- 1:20:25Speaker 9: So what you need to do is watch pulp fiction
- 1:20:28Speaker 9: and the professional right back to back yeah that's really
- 1:20:33Speaker 9: that would be a fun double wheeler yeah remember on
- 1:20:36Speaker 9: vhs tapes you do double features i'll put this one
- 1:20:40Speaker 9: on with that yeah.
- 1:20:43Speaker 8: That is quite a double B.
- 1:20:44Speaker 4: Which one would I show first?
- 1:20:47Speaker 9: I'm a person.
- 1:20:49Speaker 7: That's showing it too. It's great. I geek out about that.
- 1:20:54Speaker 7: Do what?
- 1:20:55Speaker 9: Oh, it's so much fun.
- 1:20:58Speaker 8: Probably him.
- 1:21:02Speaker 5: It's a good lead up movie.
- 1:21:04Speaker 7: Pulp Fiction is just.
- 1:21:04Speaker 4: Like aggressive, outrageous, just crazy all from the beginning to
- 1:21:09Speaker 4: the end.
- 1:21:09Speaker 7: Professional is more of a I wouldn't say slow burn.
- 1:21:13Speaker 9: But it unfolds.
- 1:21:15Speaker 4: It's subdued style, and then it has a really awesome
- 1:21:19Speaker 4: action climax.
- 1:21:21Speaker 9: Yeah. Wow, I wish I had something like that to
- 1:21:24Speaker 9: look forward to.
- 1:21:25Speaker 2: Me too.
- 1:21:25Speaker 9: That's what I've been looking for.
- 1:21:27Speaker 7: Friends with Herpes Part 2.
- 1:21:29Speaker 9: Exactly.
- 1:21:30Speaker 7: There you go.
- 1:21:32Speaker 9: Friends with Herpes.
- 1:21:35Speaker 8: Coming next summer.
- 1:21:36Speaker 7: Just for the boldness of.
- 1:21:37Speaker 6: The title, I'm like, wow.
- 1:21:38Speaker 9: Have you been watching Breaking?
- 1:21:41Speaker 8: No.
- 1:21:42Speaker 7: I wish I had.
- 1:21:43Speaker 14: Really?
- 1:21:43Speaker 9: Should I do that?
- 1:21:44Speaker 7: Yeah, that's a good question. Should I do that?
- 1:21:46Speaker 5: I'm like a butterfly. I don't like violence. I've never
- 1:21:49Speaker 5: had a dream with blood in it.
- 1:21:51Speaker 8: Really?
- 1:21:52Speaker 10: The fact that I like a TV show about a
- 1:21:54Speaker 10: drug cartel that's ridiculously violent just means that it must
- 1:21:58Speaker 10: be really good.
- 1:22:00Speaker 7: I have not met one person who does not love it. Yeah, yeah.
- 1:22:05Speaker 7: I've seen three episodes, and it's been a long time.
- 1:22:08Speaker 9: But now I'm scared to watch it, because if I
- 1:22:10Speaker 9: don't like it, I'm going to feel so alienated from
- 1:22:13Speaker 9: my fellow humans.
- 1:22:14Speaker 8: They won't want to talk to you.
- 1:22:15Speaker 11: You've got to give it its course.
- 1:22:18Speaker 14: Some people don't like the first season as much, but
- 1:22:21Speaker 14: they really like from the second season on.
- 1:22:24Speaker 9: I loved The Wire, but the first season seemed a little, like,
- 1:22:27Speaker 9: cop show conventional to me.
- 1:22:29Speaker 7: I hadn't seen that.
- 1:22:30Speaker 13: But then you get into it, and it's like heroin.
- 1:22:33Speaker 7: Yeah, exactly. It's like The Wire.
- 1:22:35Speaker 4: People think it's going to... You can't tell a person
- 1:22:37Speaker 4: who's like, oh, yeah, I love this character. Well, then
- 1:22:39Speaker 4: you'll love The Wire, because The Wire is more of
- 1:22:41Speaker 4: like a... It's... it's awesome but it creeps up on
- 1:22:45Speaker 4: you like in a weird like in a slower way
- 1:22:48Speaker 4: like you can't walk immediately like Sopranos or something you
- 1:22:50Speaker 4: know there's like a hit on every other scene there's
- 1:22:53Speaker 4: something intense going on with The Wire it's like more
- 1:22:56Speaker 4: gritty and kind of a documentary style.
- 1:22:58Speaker 9: You get to know the people I can see someone.
- 1:23:00Speaker 7: Like if I were to show my friend like the.
- 1:23:02Speaker 4: First season they'd be like this is just keep watching
- 1:23:06Speaker 4: it's just it's amazing.
- 1:23:11Speaker 8: Well, I guess we can round this one out. Has
- 1:23:12Speaker 8: everybody gotten to an essential geek activity or a movie
- 1:23:16Speaker 8: they wanted to talk about?
- 1:23:17Speaker 4: I just want to say, like, I haven't seen anything new,
- 1:23:20Speaker 4: but I just have been re-watching this past week.
- 1:23:22Speaker 7: Just movies I already love. Like, I re-watched Blue Velvet, which.
- 1:23:27Speaker 4: I'm convinced, the more I watch that, the more I'm
- 1:23:29Speaker 4: convinced that that is, like, I put it in, like,
- 1:23:32Speaker 4: this category, just where I think it's just, like, perfect movies.
- 1:23:35Speaker 8: It's pretty damn perfect, yeah.
- 1:23:37Speaker 4: It's like, it would go along with like, there's Jaws,
- 1:23:40Speaker 4: I think that's like a perfect movie.
- 1:23:42Speaker 2: Hook?
- 1:23:44Speaker 8: Okay, yes, that's the opposite.
- 1:23:46Speaker 7: I would say yes to that. I grew up on those, so.
- 1:23:50Speaker 8: I thought we were setting the standards. Okay, we've got
- 1:23:54Speaker 8: Blue Velvet on this end, and then Hook over here.
- 1:23:57Speaker 4: Like Jaws, Raiders, E.T., like just, and also I would
- 1:24:02Speaker 4: throw in Pan's Labyrinth for me. And also Blue Velvet,
- 1:24:06Speaker 4: because all those movies just have this amazing efficiency of storytelling.
- 1:24:10Speaker 4: There's not a wasted scene or bit of dialogue.
- 1:24:14Speaker 7: I don't know. I can't imagine.
- 1:24:17Speaker 4: Usually when I see a movie, I'm like, that was awesome,
- 1:24:19Speaker 4: but what if this had happened? And I just don't
- 1:24:21Speaker 4: do that with these movies.
- 1:24:23Speaker 8: It's great. That one, in re-watching it, I think that
- 1:24:28Speaker 8: is such the perfect mixture of Lynch. Because he gets...
- 1:24:32Speaker 8: I mean, he started off really weird. He's gotten old
- 1:24:35Speaker 8: and weird. But there's this weird middle crossover where it's
- 1:24:39Speaker 8: just enough of his weirdness. It's just enough conventional story.
- 1:24:43Speaker 8: It's just enough of everything. And these amazing performances that
- 1:24:47Speaker 8: it all... That's the pinnacle of Lynch right there.
- 1:24:50Speaker 9: What I think it is, is it's almost like he's
- 1:24:53Speaker 9: mating with a Coen brother.
- 1:24:55Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 1:24:56Speaker 13: There's something tied about it.
- 1:24:57Speaker 11: It's much.
- 1:24:59Speaker 8: Yeah, much more controlled than his other crazy stuff.
- 1:25:02Speaker 9: It's like his style, but with that kind of focus
- 1:25:06Speaker 9: and construction.
- 1:25:08Speaker 4: And also maybe No Country for Old Men.
- 1:25:11Speaker 2: I don't know.
- 1:25:12Speaker 7: I thought that was a good one too.
- 1:25:16Speaker 5: I didn't like that one because.
- 1:25:19Speaker 7: There weren't a lot of colors in it.
- 1:25:20Speaker 5: I don't like Oscar films.
- 1:25:22Speaker 7: There's no colors.
- 1:25:22Speaker 9: I get sleepy.
- 1:25:23Speaker 11: I'm not even kidding.
- 1:25:25Speaker 7: I can see that. It's just like.
- 1:25:28Speaker 11: Everything's the desert.
- 1:25:31Speaker 9: Saving Private Ryan. Everything's sort of faded.
- 1:25:34Speaker 7: Yeah, it has that.
- 1:25:35Speaker 4: Saturated, kind of washed.
- 1:25:39Speaker 9: The thing I hate about Saving Private Ryan is I
- 1:25:42Speaker 9: see it quoted so often.
- 1:25:45Speaker 8: You say that I never see it maybe I'm just
- 1:25:48Speaker 8: not recognizing it.
- 1:25:49Speaker 4: Like friends not heated but like just debates about like
- 1:25:52Speaker 4: I about the Thin Red Line versus Saving Private Ryan
- 1:25:55Speaker 4: and while they're like how could you ever think that
- 1:25:57Speaker 4: Thin Red Line is a better movie I'm like because
- 1:25:59Speaker 4: it is like I just it's I mean Saving Private
- 1:26:03Speaker 4: Ryan like I look at as if like as if
- 1:26:05Speaker 4: it's a from an action standpoint it's kind of amazing
- 1:26:08Speaker 4: like it's just more of a visceral kind of.
- 1:26:11Speaker 7: I don't know noisy thing but And.
- 1:26:14Speaker 4: It's, like, just, it's well-directed and everything, but just, like,
- 1:26:19Speaker 4: shot for shot, I guess, I'd just rather look at
- 1:26:23Speaker 4: Red Lion or just any Malek movie.
- 1:26:25Speaker 11: The opening to Saving Private Ryan, if you just.
- 1:26:28Speaker 7: You have to, the opening is amazing.
- 1:26:30Speaker 8: It's like its own thing. It's its own short film.
- 1:26:32Speaker 11: Yeah, you could have just released that as a short film.
- 1:26:34Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 1:26:35Speaker 8: Because it's amazing.
- 1:26:39Speaker 14: The soldiers who stormed the beach, they had to leave.
- 1:26:42Speaker 11: They were like, this is giving me.
- 1:26:44Speaker 8: It's too real.
- 1:26:45Speaker 9: One of those guys lives across the street from me.
- 1:26:49Speaker 9: He's one of the guys who actually made it. Well,
- 1:26:52Speaker 9: he wasn't in that first wave. He came up in
- 1:26:54Speaker 9: the artillery that was running sort of behind.
- 1:26:58Speaker 8: Climbing over the dead bodies of the first wave.
- 1:27:01Speaker 9: Yeah, yeah. Yeah, but he was there and he went
- 1:27:04Speaker 9: all the way to the crow's nest. Aren't that many
- 1:27:09Speaker 9: of those guys around?
- 1:27:10Speaker 8: No.
- 1:27:12Speaker 9: He almost fell on my steps one day and I'm like,
- 1:27:15Speaker 9: to make it through all that, be careful.
- 1:27:20Speaker 8: Tie on my front lawn. That was the point. It's
- 1:27:27Speaker 8: not funny.
- 1:27:28Speaker 4: To see that kind of intensity, that kind of carnage
- 1:27:33Speaker 4: like filmed it like with a you know war movie
- 1:27:35Speaker 4: like that i can't think of.
- 1:27:36Speaker 7: Another war movie like i feel like he started.
- 1:27:39Speaker 4: Like a whole new way of looking at war movies
- 1:27:41Speaker 4: like black hawk down and everything that we.
- 1:27:43Speaker 21: Get now it was a game-changing kind of thing i
- 1:27:46Speaker 21: would say it's a game yeah that was one of
- 1:27:48Speaker 21: the first times that in a sort of action sequence
- 1:27:53Speaker 21: that he was mainly handheld cameras and it had that
- 1:27:56Speaker 21: documentary yeah yeah cinema verite feel to it.
- 1:27:59Speaker 8: Which now we get way, way too much of. But
- 1:28:02Speaker 8: at the time, it was groundbreaking. Yeah, it's very amazing
- 1:28:06Speaker 8: to think about, especially at that point when we hadn't
- 1:28:08Speaker 8: seen that before. All right, anything else for this one?
- 1:28:15Speaker 8: I will attempt to do this. I haven't done it
- 1:28:18Speaker 8: in a long time because my own crew was kind
- 1:28:20Speaker 8: of slacking, so maybe I can throw it to you guys.
- 1:28:22Speaker 8: I'm going to say something here, and we're going to
- 1:28:26Speaker 8: need a big fanfare. You seem like a fanfare kind
- 1:28:29Speaker 8: of girl, Rose.
- 1:28:29Speaker 9: Come on now. Can you do fanfare? What does that mean?
- 1:28:33Speaker 13: Noises.
- 1:28:33Speaker 7: Off.
- 1:28:34Speaker 9: Uh trumpets uh.
- 1:28:36Speaker 10: Trumpets i gotta do this on my own why don't
- 1:28:38Speaker 10: we have like an orchestra it's like whoa okay you
- 1:28:42Speaker 10: do it.
- 1:28:42Speaker 9: You can you and i sang in harmony once.
- 1:28:45Speaker 8: That one was good and then since then you guys
- 1:28:46Speaker 8: just started slacking yeah we did all right i'm gonna
- 1:28:49Speaker 8: say it and then i'll throw it to you guys
- 1:28:51Speaker 8: see what you come up with okay kids get out
- 1:28:52Speaker 8: your decoder pins
- 1:28:57Speaker 8: That's what I want. That's
- 1:28:59Speaker 8: what I want every week, guys.
- 1:29:01Speaker 6: Come on.
- 1:29:01Speaker 13: Man, that was the best ever.
- 1:29:03Speaker 2: I know.
- 1:29:03Speaker 13: Did y'all plan this? That was amazing.
- 1:29:08Speaker 7: I would be like, uh.
- 1:29:10Speaker 13: You got to say.
- 1:29:10Speaker 5: The woman, male, like, you know, like different tones.
- 1:29:14Speaker 9: I tried to do that with Greg, but I wasn't
- 1:29:16Speaker 9: sure which one to pick.
- 1:29:17Speaker 8: We both picked the low.
- 1:29:21Speaker 7: Every week.
- 1:29:22Speaker 8: Oddly enough, they both picked the high. Very strange.
- 1:29:26Speaker 2: Set your pins to V2. Here is the message.
- 1:29:30Speaker 8: With that, it is time for the Movie Meltdown Secret
- 1:29:33Speaker 8: Circle reveal of the next exciting feature. And it will
- 1:29:37Speaker 8: be pretty exciting.
- 1:29:38Speaker 14: Sure.
- 1:29:39Speaker 8: Yeah, we're all trying to figure out what to do
- 1:29:41Speaker 8: with this movie. So next week, we will be back
- 1:29:44Speaker 8: And we will be discussing Bronson. And if you've experienced Bronson,
- 1:29:50Speaker 8: if not, go watch it now. We're giving you the
- 1:29:52Speaker 8: heads up now. If you haven't seen it, it's something
- 1:29:54Speaker 8: you probably need to see. So, get on it. Otherwise,
- 1:29:58Speaker 8: that about does it. We will return next week. Same
- 1:30:00Speaker 8: geek time, same geek feed. Thanks for listening.
