- 0:00Speaker 1: It's a sponsored feature brought to you.
- 0:01Speaker 2: By Oreo Donuts.
- 0:08Speaker 1: I've already started eating. Yeah. Here he is Ben Lee,
- 0:11Speaker 1: the donut Critic.
- 0:13Speaker 3: Thanks for having me on again.
- 0:14Speaker 1: It's always a pleasure.
- 0:17Speaker 4: The seventh annual Utah Donut Championship started yesterday.
- 0:23Speaker 5: Yeah, so I was shocked when I started looking at
- 0:25Speaker 5: the winners that I've had the last six years and thinking,
- 0:28Speaker 5: holy cow, seven years we've been doing this competition highlighting
- 0:33Speaker 5: our donut shops. And I want you guys all to
- 0:35Speaker 5: know that Utah truly is a gem for donuts.
- 0:40Speaker 3: It is a hot spot for donuts.
- 0:41Speaker 2: We're spoiled with our donut options.
- 0:44Speaker 3: I mean we're not in La or we're not New York.
- 0:47Speaker 5: However, we are one of the top five spots because
- 0:49Speaker 5: people always tune in and they say, how do you
- 0:52Speaker 5: have thirty two shops to go through this bracket? And
- 0:56Speaker 5: I said, I could probably come up with sixty four easily.
- 0:59Speaker 4: Yeah, so previous winners. I think this is interesting. You
- 1:03Speaker 4: started in twenty nineteen with Fresh Donut in Delhi.
- 1:06Speaker 2: I still love There's still my go to do.
- 1:08Speaker 3: Oh they are so good.
- 1:10Speaker 4: Mountain Donuts is next yep up in Ogden Chubby Baker.
- 1:15Speaker 3: Yeah, we brought Chubby on a couple of weeks ago.
- 1:18Speaker 4: Bambury Cross won two years in a row. They've always
- 1:22Speaker 4: been a place I go to pretty close.
- 1:24Speaker 3: To my house, very standard, good and.
- 1:26Speaker 4: Just straight ahead. And Lehigh Bakery last year. And so
- 1:31Speaker 4: now what have you brought us today?
- 1:33Speaker 1: What is so?
- 1:34Speaker 3: What I brought you in today is Donut Boy.
- 1:37Speaker 5: And the reason why I've brought you in Donut Boy
- 1:38Speaker 5: because we've tried the winners in a lot of these
- 1:40Speaker 5: more popular shops, there's a shop one or two that
- 1:44Speaker 5: are always so near to winning, and Donut Boy is
- 1:47Speaker 5: one of those. Donut Boy and Donut Star down in
- 1:50Speaker 5: Draper in South Jordan, and I think more people need
- 1:53Speaker 5: to know about it.
- 1:54Speaker 3: Donut Boy is a really good donut.
- 1:56Speaker 1: It's in West Valley, yep.
- 1:58Speaker 5: So it's in West Valley, right by the Maverick Center,
- 2:00Speaker 5: right before you get into the Mavericks Center track.
- 2:02Speaker 1: And what's their story?
- 2:04Speaker 3: So Donut Boy is a family owned business.
- 2:08Speaker 5: They were traveling around and they had always hit up
- 2:10Speaker 5: the donut shops in other states and realized that Don't
- 2:14Speaker 5: Donuts in Utah were pretty boring. This is back in
- 2:17Speaker 5: twenty fifteen, so they decided to get the gourmet donuts
- 2:20Speaker 5: here and they really have been a pioneer. I mean
- 2:23Speaker 5: now you can go to many shops and get that
- 2:25Speaker 5: gourmet feeling, but they've kept that gourmet donut going quality
- 2:30Speaker 5: and all that familiness going to.
- 2:31Speaker 4: This is really a but for that one was just
- 2:35Speaker 4: the glaze, right, yeah, very good glazed.
- 2:37Speaker 1: I don't know what the other one was.
- 2:38Speaker 2: You gave me a pischiis.
- 2:41Speaker 3: So this is the Dubai chocolate.
- 2:43Speaker 5: So they are one of the first, especially in Utah,
- 2:47Speaker 5: to do the Dubai chocolate donut.
- 2:49Speaker 3: So that's a huge thing.
- 2:50Speaker 5: I brought in a chocolate yes from the teap place, yes,
- 2:55Speaker 5: from the coffee place over there, and they decided.
- 2:58Speaker 3: To do a donut.
- 2:59Speaker 5: And it's really good because it is that pistachio butter
- 3:02Speaker 5: so good milk chocolate on top, and then it's a
- 3:05Speaker 5: real pistachio crumbled on top as well.
- 3:07Speaker 1: This is uh And then this thing is what is
- 3:10Speaker 1: this monster?
- 3:11Speaker 5: So you have the maple bacon bar, which is really
- 3:16Speaker 5: delicious because it is that salty and sweet and.
- 3:18Speaker 1: There are strips of bacon on top of that.
- 3:20Speaker 5: Real strips of bacon, not Costco bacon that you sometimes
- 3:24Speaker 5: see on donuts.
- 3:25Speaker 3: I love the strawberry and cream.
- 3:27Speaker 5: That's what I have in front of me. Gina, you
- 3:29Speaker 5: said you got the oreo. I did one of my favorites.
- 3:32Speaker 5: But honestly, I love a good glaze, and that's how
- 3:35Speaker 5: I judge most shops, and they're glaze is a really
- 3:39Speaker 5: good glaze.
- 3:39Speaker 6: If you can get the glaze basic down, you can
- 3:42Speaker 6: do so much with them.
- 3:43Speaker 3: Yeah, go ahead and dress everything up else on top.
- 3:45Speaker 7: I love a family owned, local business, so I love
- 3:49Speaker 7: it when you bring these to us.
- 3:50Speaker 5: And yeah, one of my favorite things about donut Boy,
- 3:53Speaker 5: and this is something I just learned this week when
- 3:55Speaker 5: I wanted to bring them on.
- 3:57Speaker 3: The name was always confusing to me. Why donut boy?
- 4:01Speaker 4: What?
- 4:01Speaker 3: You know? What was it?
- 4:02Speaker 5: And it was a family member, a brother in law,
- 4:05Speaker 5: that after a soccer game, he would eat an entire
- 4:08Speaker 5: dozen donuts, which honestly is in insane if you've tried
- 4:12Speaker 5: to do that.
- 4:13Speaker 3: And uh, I mean, think about how many times in.
- 4:15Speaker 5: Your family there's something crazy going on and you just
- 4:17Speaker 5: get that nickname because you.
- 4:19Speaker 3: Know you're you can never donut boy, and uh.
- 4:23Speaker 5: Yeah, it just goes to show that that familyiness really
- 4:27Speaker 5: is the you know, the innards of this shop. The
- 4:32Speaker 5: quality is family business. You can tell that they really
- 4:35Speaker 5: care as they build these donuts.
- 4:38Speaker 7: So, donut boy, are they on the bracket for your donut?
- 4:43Speaker 2: What do you call it? It's like March madness, but
- 4:45Speaker 2: it's right.
- 4:45Speaker 3: I call the Utah Donut Championships.
- 4:47Speaker 1: Yep.
- 4:48Speaker 3: Okay, this is the twenty twenty five Utah Donut Championship.
- 4:51Speaker 1: Voting is still going on.
- 4:52Speaker 3: Yep. So yesterday we voted on the top thirty two.
- 4:55Speaker 5: Today is the Sweet sixteen that's up on my Instagram
- 4:58Speaker 5: right now.
- 5:00Speaker 1: Now, can anybody vote?
- 5:01Speaker 3: Yep?
- 5:01Speaker 5: So if you have an Instagram, so, I concentrated on
- 5:04Speaker 5: Instagram stories, so I eliminate repeat voting or voter.
- 5:08Speaker 3: Fraud, let's say that.
- 5:10Speaker 5: But we get thousands and thousands of votes every poll.
- 5:14Speaker 5: So we do round of thirty two on Monday, Sweet sixteen, today,
- 5:18Speaker 5: Tasty eight, Tomorrow, Final four, and then the final votes
- 5:21Speaker 5: on Friday. The winner gets announced on Saturday.
- 5:24Speaker 2: So if you have a favorite man, you can jump
- 5:26Speaker 2: in anytime.
- 5:27Speaker 5: Right, Yeah, you can jump in anytime. You don't have
- 5:29Speaker 5: to start voting on Monday. You don't have to start
- 5:32Speaker 5: voting today, Like you can jump in at any time,
- 5:34Speaker 5: but I am encouraging all the donut lovers to get
- 5:37Speaker 5: in there because I do want something that's representative of Utah.
- 5:40Speaker 5: Like I don't want something to be runaway popular just
- 5:44Speaker 5: because one group of people think. So I want more
- 5:46Speaker 5: people throughout the state to weigh in on which is
- 5:49Speaker 5: the best donut?
- 5:51Speaker 4: Man, this is I'm not in the slightest bit hungry
- 5:55Speaker 4: and I'm eating all of them. Well.
- 5:58Speaker 5: And one of the things that you can do with
- 5:59Speaker 5: this bracket too, is it basically gives you a list
- 6:02Speaker 5: of the top thirty two shops to drive.
- 6:04Speaker 7: That's what I like about it, Like a lot of
- 6:06Speaker 7: these places you've never.
- 6:07Speaker 1: Heard of, and you're looking for something different.
- 6:09Speaker 5: Yeah, yeah, yeah, because a lot of times it is
- 6:12Speaker 5: that shop that's a mile or two away from you
- 6:15Speaker 5: that you always frequent. But what if there's something just
- 6:18Speaker 5: one more mile that's even better or that you would
- 6:20Speaker 5: like more.
- 6:21Speaker 6: Well, we did the We did the same thing with
- 6:22Speaker 6: our cookie places. There's a couple of cookie places right
- 6:25Speaker 6: close to us, and we found out about this other
- 6:27Speaker 6: one that's been a little bit man, you.
- 6:29Speaker 1: Know, maybe a half a mile away.
- 6:31Speaker 3: Yeah, but that's that's the beauty, but that.
- 6:33Speaker 6: That one is the go to and hopefully you'll go
- 6:35Speaker 6: to see them today and then talk about it next time.
- 6:37Speaker 4: Or when you and or if you're you know, say
- 6:39Speaker 4: you're out and about and you realize, oh, I'm in
- 6:42Speaker 4: the neighborhood of this place.
- 6:44Speaker 5: I'll stop and I have lists like that every time.
- 6:47Speaker 5: It's just where am I at, where am I going
- 6:50Speaker 5: to visit? And when I travel, I do the same thing.
- 6:52Speaker 5: It's just like that flexibility.
- 6:54Speaker 3: But you can do it at home.
- 6:55Speaker 5: You can have those things listed and that bracket of
- 6:58Speaker 5: thirty two donuts is a great.
- 6:59Speaker 6: Way to do all right, So go to go to
- 7:01Speaker 6: Ben's Instagram Donut Critic and vote. Here's a question, since
- 7:05Speaker 6: we're on the topic of donuts. Uh, do you know
- 7:08Speaker 6: of a place that carries Macha Green tea donuts?
- 7:11Speaker 3: So Macha Green? She yeah.
- 7:13Speaker 5: So we have Chubby Baker, Yes, So she has SLC
- 7:18Speaker 5: Sandy and orm she has Macha all the time moch Nut.
- 7:22Speaker 5: So Mochi Nut is the Mochi based donuts. There's one
- 7:25Speaker 5: in Sugar House, there's one I think still in Park City,
- 7:28Speaker 5: but they do Macha as well.
- 7:30Speaker 7: So see Ben knows this stuff.
- 7:34Speaker 4: Exactly why do you think it is? Now I heard
- 7:37Speaker 4: that dunkin Donuts is coming back again. It like goes
- 7:41Speaker 4: away and it comes back and goes And I've never
- 7:44Speaker 4: been particularly impressed with Duncan. They're not that good.
- 7:46Speaker 1: What what's what do you? What's the story with them?
- 7:49Speaker 5: So I I really do think they just don't do
- 7:52Speaker 5: a great donut. And exactly, it's not the draw. So
- 7:55Speaker 5: the drinks are the draw. And let's just be honest.
- 7:58Speaker 5: The Utah is not a place for a coffee place
- 8:01Speaker 5: to really thrive like Duncan is used to, you know,
- 8:04Speaker 5: like I feel like in other states they thrive because
- 8:07Speaker 5: of the drink selections, the coffees and whatnot. But Utah
- 8:11Speaker 5: has to have that additional draw. And the donuts are
- 8:14Speaker 5: not a draw. Like you go in once and you
- 8:16Speaker 5: are not impressed with it.
- 8:17Speaker 7: But look at all of these places that are the
- 8:20Speaker 7: donut is the draw. They're all locally owned and like
- 8:24Speaker 7: they have so many better options.
- 8:25Speaker 5: And truthfully, I've encouraged a lot of these places to
- 8:28Speaker 5: do more drinks because the same thing, you start pairing it.
- 8:31Speaker 5: So Bambury Cross is going to be announcing a new
- 8:35Speaker 5: latte drink. So that's going to be start rolling out
- 8:38Speaker 5: in Layton in Centerville, I think in the next week
- 8:40Speaker 5: or two.
- 8:41Speaker 3: And it's for that same reason.
- 8:42Speaker 5: They know that they have the donuts and people want
- 8:44Speaker 5: to come in, but their question now is well, where's
- 8:47Speaker 5: my drink, so.
- 8:48Speaker 2: Go somewhere else from that.
- 8:49Speaker 6: If they were if Duncan were to focus on the
- 8:51Speaker 6: frappuccino style stuff or the even the dirty soda type stuff, yeah, whatever,
- 9:00Speaker 6: there's what.
- 9:00Speaker 2: I judge for. I like the local place.
- 9:04Speaker 1: I'll go to my local places.
- 9:05Speaker 5: I actually laugh every time that they come in and
- 9:07Speaker 5: then they close the store because it's like, I'm just
- 9:10Speaker 5: not going to go exactly.
- 9:12Speaker 6: So, yeah, I want you to check out Chunky Cookie, Okay,
- 9:14Speaker 6: I would buyd And another place I'm going to is
- 9:17Speaker 6: Angry Dough Yes down here bye? Yeah that foes another
- 9:24Speaker 6: place I'm going to.
- 9:25Speaker 3: Yeah, So well we will talk cookies next time.
- 9:27Speaker 5: I know the cookie apocalypse has happened and a lot
- 9:30Speaker 5: of these shops are closing, but there are still good
- 9:33Speaker 5: places out there.
- 9:34Speaker 3: And make you carry im. I'm going to go and
- 9:36Speaker 3: visit that place.
- 9:37Speaker 7: If you have suggestions for Ben, you can get all
- 9:40Speaker 7: of them on on Instagram.
- 9:41Speaker 5: Yeah, and I reason this place, yep, and I respond
- 9:44Speaker 5: really quickly. And if you want a copy of this
- 9:46Speaker 5: bracket PDF, let me know and I'll send it over
- 9:48Speaker 5: to you.
- 9:49Speaker 3: But I have other lists coming out.
- 9:50Speaker 5: We're going to be releasing a lot of my top
- 9:52Speaker 5: tens for other desserts throughout the next couple of months.
- 9:55Speaker 1: All right, thank you. I just go to Donut Critic
- 10:02Speaker 1: on Instagram and take a look at the deliciousness
