Episode 64: Bake-kujira

Legends of the Hidden Horde · Oct 22, 2026 · 12m

In episode 64 we go out past the last buoy off the Shimane coast, where the water is the color of iron and something white is moving that should not still be moving. This is the Bake-kujira, the ghost whale. The name is plain. Bake means changed, or ghostly. Kujira means whale. The telling sits in the western Japanese record of things that come in from the sea when the living have already finished with them. It is not a famous yokai in the city sense. It is a coastal one. Fishermen knew it. Priests knew what to do when the white shape stayed.
