- 0:01Speaker 1: Here's your host, Alex Garrett. All right, well, today is
- 0:06Speaker 1: the first day of October and it's also for the
- 0:09Speaker 1: one Leg Up Alex Adapts crowd the first day of
- 0:12Speaker 1: Disability Employment Awareness Month. And I couldn't think of a
- 0:17Speaker 1: better company to partner with this whole month to sponsor
- 0:20Speaker 1: all the segments when we talk about disability employment Awareness
- 0:24Speaker 1: and of course all the adaptive stories in October than
- 0:27Speaker 1: Tripper Corp. I mentioned them a couple of weeks ago.
- 0:29Speaker 1: The as they say, wheelchair accessible, Mercedes, Transit and minivans
- 0:36Speaker 1: all inclusive handicap ac Saysible Travel agency. Eric Ryan is
- 0:40Speaker 1: the proprietor at Triple Corp, and of course he reached
- 0:45Speaker 1: out to me and said, hey, let's partner on this
- 0:47Speaker 1: for the month of October. I say, yes, let's do
- 0:49Speaker 1: this because, as you may know, Uber's in a lawsuit
- 0:56Speaker 1: with the DJ about the way they handled people disabilities.
- 1:00Speaker 1: As you may also know, Uber and Lyft are not
- 1:02Speaker 1: available outside of New York City, basically New Jersey, Connecticut,
- 1:07Speaker 1: Long Island. They're not there, But you know who is
- 1:09Speaker 1: Tripper Corp is, and I'm so excited that they've come
- 1:12Speaker 1: alongside One look Up Alex this month to say yes,
- 1:16Speaker 1: we want to partner with you and help sponsor these
- 1:19Speaker 1: segments along the way. So I'm very honored that Tripper
- 1:22Speaker 1: and they also want to let me know that they
- 1:25Speaker 1: are hiring and they have hired people with disabilities as
- 1:28Speaker 1: their dispatchers for Tripper Corp. Getting the messages and calls
- 1:33Speaker 1: are those disabilities, So not only transporting and taking care
- 1:38Speaker 1: of the disabled community getting them to destination, but also
- 1:43Speaker 1: hiring them along the way. So Tripper Coorp dot net
- 1:47Speaker 1: is the website that's Tripper Corp. Tri pp r corp
- 1:52Speaker 1: dot net now One Leg Up Alex Adapts covered it
- 1:55Speaker 1: briefly yesterday on the One Leg of Alex podcast that
- 1:59Speaker 1: the fair affairs for LR disabled passengers will be all day,
- 2:05Speaker 1: half fair, all day. Why this is so meaningful I
- 2:08Speaker 1: wanted to get into this more is because right now,
- 2:13Speaker 1: if you're a personal disabilities and you work, and you work,
- 2:18Speaker 1: you have to pay thirteen dollars an hour in the
- 2:21Speaker 1: peak travel in the morning. And I know I've said
- 2:24Speaker 1: this before, but the reasoning they gave me was, well,
- 2:28Speaker 1: guess what we think that the people disabilities just commuted
- 2:31Speaker 1: for leisure purposes and medical appointments but they forgot a
- 2:35Speaker 1: very important part at the LR, at the MTA that
- 2:40Speaker 1: people with disabilities do work. This Employment Disability Awareness Month,
- 2:45Speaker 1: I have to say, people do work, and I'm gonna
- 2:50Speaker 1: get you some SATs on this as well. But for
- 2:52Speaker 1: the LR to be so narrow minded up until now
- 2:54Speaker 1: when the board approved that all day, every day, every
- 2:58Speaker 1: hour is going to be eighty eight as for those
- 3:00Speaker 1: who disabled passengers, it meunts my heart because, as you know,
- 3:04Speaker 1: we were in the Daily News about this. I sent
- 3:06Speaker 1: my op ed, my column about how there is to
- 3:09Speaker 1: be fairness on the rails for people with disabilities. Well,
- 3:14Speaker 1: the LR is finally recognizing that months later and the
- 3:18Speaker 1: board has approved it. But for the LR and others
- 3:24Speaker 1: that say, well, people disabilities may not work, I want
- 3:30Speaker 1: to challenge that idea. I want to challenge that today
- 3:36Speaker 1: because I came on there with stats a few years ago.
- 3:41Speaker 1: But here's what the US Department of Labor is saying
- 3:43Speaker 1: right now on the first day of Disability Employment Awareness Month.
- 3:50Speaker 1: Did you know that from twenty twenty four to now,
- 3:58Speaker 1: the labor participation rate is up to forty two percent
- 4:01Speaker 1: from forty percent now, the employment rate did drop, did
- 4:08Speaker 1: increase a little bit from eight point one day to
- 4:10Speaker 1: eight point eight, but from the ages of sixteen to
- 4:17Speaker 1: sixty four there's a two percent increase. From the ages
- 4:20Speaker 1: of sixteen plus there's a one percent increase. And I
- 4:31Speaker 1: think this is important to note that people with disabilities
- 4:38Speaker 1: in twenty twenty four, from ages sixteen to nineteen was
- 4:42Speaker 1: twenty seven percent. Twenty twenty twenty to twenty four year
- 4:46Speaker 1: olds forty six percent with a disability. We're working. As
- 4:50Speaker 1: of last year, we're working. It's a total between sixteen
- 5:02Speaker 1: years and four of forty percent of forty percent, with
- 5:07Speaker 1: a lower unemployment rate of eight point one. So people
- 5:11Speaker 1: with disabilities work. Even Tripper Corporate is sponsoring this series
- 5:15Speaker 1: this October. I'm very excited about that people work, and yes,
- 5:24Speaker 1: equal opportunity employers, but I want to see more of
- 5:26Speaker 1: that put into practice, not just by employers but by
- 5:30Speaker 1: our own transit systems. And you know, the myth in
- 5:36Speaker 1: which is why Tripper is so important also is well,
- 5:38Speaker 1: people with disabilities don't go out after ten pm. That's
- 5:42Speaker 1: bull crap too. People go out of ten pm with disabilities.
- 5:45Speaker 1: That's why Trippers there. Slowly are we working, but we're
- 5:48Speaker 1: active people. We are active people. So I'm very glad
- 5:53Speaker 1: the l took the stand, but I'm also very glad
- 5:56Speaker 1: that Tripper is filling a void where Uber and Lyft
- 5:59Speaker 1: just do not, just do not. And not only that,
- 6:05Speaker 1: Eric Ryan and his team are helping people get to
- 6:07Speaker 1: baseball games, are helping people get to work. They only
- 6:10Speaker 1: higher people, then they help people get to work as well.
- 6:14Speaker 1: So it's a multi fasting company, just like we are
- 6:17Speaker 1: a multi faceting community that needs to be highlighted not
- 6:21Speaker 1: just in October or July, but every month. That's why
- 6:23Speaker 1: the one that got Alex adapts feature is always active, right,
- 6:28Speaker 1: because there's always stories. I gotta do better with it
- 6:31Speaker 1: because sometimes the news and the sports of the day
- 6:33Speaker 1: get to my head. But I think you should know
- 6:40Speaker 1: that con the Department of Labor. According to the Department
- 6:43Speaker 1: of Labor, the working age population has an increase to
- 6:53Speaker 1: forty two percent forty two percent from forty percent. The
- 7:04Speaker 1: employment population ratio is thirty eight percent. And I can
- 7:12Speaker 1: get into the breakdown of white, Hispanic, black way. No,
- 7:15Speaker 1: I just wanted to be generic and say people disabilities
- 7:18Speaker 1: are working and they're being hired, and that's so important
- 7:27Speaker 1: to know, and we gotta keep on that trend upward.
- 7:35Speaker 1: We've got to keep on that trend upward. And I'm
- 7:39Speaker 1: so thankful that Tripper exists to get people to and
- 7:41Speaker 1: from their workplace. They're yeah, places that they go for leisure,
- 7:46Speaker 1: they're medical appointments. They do it better than Uber, they
- 7:50Speaker 1: do a better than lift, and God bless it, they
- 7:52Speaker 1: probably do it better than the public transportationism, which our
- 7:56Speaker 1: tax is funded, by the way. So I had to
- 8:01Speaker 1: come on here and fire it up for the first
- 8:04Speaker 1: day of October. Almost through age thirty three. We're almost there, people,
- 8:09Speaker 1: October twenty nineteen days away. Kind of excited to and
- 8:14Speaker 1: if you're religious, I'm sorry to say this, but get
- 8:16Speaker 1: through my Jesus here because it would mean I'm mortal, okay,
- 8:22Speaker 1: which would be nice to feel mortal. But anyway, I'm
- 8:25Speaker 1: definitely not perfect, that's for sure. But anyway, we're almost
- 8:29Speaker 1: there to thirty four. I cannot wait to get out
- 8:31Speaker 1: of the Jesus here. It'll be nice. It'll be nice
- 8:34Speaker 1: when I'm not running from taxis. That's even better. That's
- 8:38Speaker 1: even better. But I had to come on here the
- 8:41Speaker 1: first day of October Employment and Discibility Employment Awareness Month.
- 8:45Speaker 1: We're gonna talk a lot about it. Here are the
- 8:47Speaker 1: one lug Up Alex podcast and we're gonnat into the
- 8:51Speaker 1: small business. I want to talk to the people that
- 8:52Speaker 1: I was an idea sparked. We with check in with
- 8:55Speaker 1: them on their businesses during this month. Because see that
- 8:59Speaker 1: the converse say about people disability seems to stop as
- 9:02Speaker 1: soon as the ADA anniversary is over, doesn't it. Well,
- 9:06Speaker 1: here this podcast is not gonna stop. And yet probably
- 9:08Speaker 1: it's because I'm more involved in the community than many
- 9:10Speaker 1: other podcasters and many other people. But also it's because
- 9:16Speaker 1: I've seen how inaccessible this city can be and we
- 9:20Speaker 1: have to change that. We have to change that. My
- 9:26Speaker 1: friend Sherry, she wrote to the USTA about their accessibility
- 9:31Speaker 1: issues at the US opened a couple of years ago,
- 9:33Speaker 1: and maybe things change, I don't know, but their accessibility
- 9:35Speaker 1: issues all over the place. The met Opera need a
- 9:40Speaker 1: one million dollar elevator from our tax paying dollars. Yes,
- 9:44Speaker 1: I'm all for the ADA accessibility, Yes, but they can
- 9:47Speaker 1: be doing it on theirselves, on their own. As another
- 9:51Speaker 1: partner of mine in the podcast world, Derek's Bags rights
- 9:57Speaker 1: by funding it theirselves. So we've got a lot to change.
- 10:04Speaker 1: We have to rely on ourselves. To be more accessible
- 10:10Speaker 1: and self reliance will carry the table community even farther.
- 10:18Speaker 1: I really believe that, And look at the self reliance
- 10:21Speaker 1: of the forty two percent that are working with the
- 10:24Speaker 1: disability as of August twenty twenty five, a two percent
- 10:29Speaker 1: jumb who's talking about this. Nobody is. Nobody is except
- 10:34Speaker 1: we are. And that's why we're trying to have one
- 10:37Speaker 1: lug up for you to say you can be hired
- 10:39Speaker 1: today two. And that's how one leg up Alex helps
- 10:47Speaker 1: people adapt by just saying it. You can do it too,
- 10:52Speaker 1: You too can have one lug up on life. This
- 10:55Speaker 1: Disability Employment Awareness Month twenty twenty five
