- 0:07Speaker 1: The Season with Peter Scheger is a production of the
- 0:09Speaker 1: NFL in partnership with iHeartRadio. What's Up Everybody, Look to
- 0:25Speaker 1: the Season with Peter Schreger. I'm Peter Schreger. I host
- 0:28Speaker 1: Good Morning Football Monday to Friday on the NFL network.
- 0:30Speaker 1: I'm also on the Fox NFL Kickoff pregame show on Sundays.
- 0:34Speaker 1: I'll be on Super Bowl Sunday. Just got my assignment.
- 0:38Speaker 1: I'll be assigned to one of the teams throughout the
- 0:41Speaker 1: entire day, so I'll be boarding the buses and giving
- 0:44Speaker 1: reports Super Bowl Sunday as they load up and head
- 0:46Speaker 1: over to the stadium, and throughout the week. Of course,
- 0:49Speaker 1: I'll be doing Good Morning Football, but also giving you
- 0:52Speaker 1: insights on all the things happen around the NFL, so
- 0:54Speaker 1: stay tuned for that. And Fox has the Super Bowl,
- 0:57Speaker 1: so I'll be playing I don't know if i'd call
- 0:59Speaker 1: it a prominent role, but playing a role of Super
- 1:01Speaker 1: Bowl Sunday, and that is pretty cool. But today's monologue
- 1:05Speaker 1: is not based on any of the four teams that
- 1:08Speaker 1: are still playing, and we could have gone that route,
- 1:11Speaker 1: but you know, you'll go elsewhere for that. This is
- 1:13Speaker 1: a very specific podcast. Often about leadership and about coaches
- 1:19Speaker 1: and about gms, and I just want to praise the
- 1:22Speaker 1: Chicago Bears. I want to praise the Chicago Bears for
- 1:25Speaker 1: actually getting the guy. Do I know how Ben Johnson
- 1:29Speaker 1: will work out as an NFL head coach. I have
- 1:31Speaker 1: no idea. I've met Ben several times. We've had some
- 1:35Speaker 1: really good conversations, and I think he's a more than
- 1:38Speaker 1: competent guy. He's a father of three kids, thirty eight
- 1:41Speaker 1: years old, and he was the hottest name from the
- 1:43Speaker 1: offensive side of the ball that was out there this year.
- 1:47Speaker 1: The fact that the Bears bought him is such a
- 1:50Speaker 1: big deal to me because here's the bell of the
- 1:53Speaker 1: ball and he could have taken any of these jobs
- 1:56Speaker 1: outside of New England. They went with Rabel obviously, and
- 1:59Speaker 1: he only chose to interview with a few and when
- 2:02Speaker 1: it came down to it, he looked at two possibilities,
- 2:05Speaker 1: the Raiders and the the Raiders clean slate, go and
- 2:09Speaker 1: build the team. Go and work with your GM that
- 2:13Speaker 1: you're gonna probably have input on who they hire. Go
- 2:15Speaker 1: and work with Tom Brady, the greatest quarterback of all time,
- 2:18Speaker 1: as a minority owner, and go build this thing from
- 2:21Speaker 1: the ground up. Now that all sounds great, and there's
- 2:25Speaker 1: probably more money attached to that Raiders job. We'll see
- 2:28Speaker 1: what actually is reported and what was offered, if anything
- 2:31Speaker 1: was offered at all. But with the Chicago Bears, there's
- 2:34Speaker 1: a comfort, and the comfort is I've got the guy.
- 2:39Speaker 1: I've got the quarterback. And obviously Ben Johnson not only
- 2:42Speaker 1: wanted the quarterback, but he wanted that logo and he
- 2:44Speaker 1: wanted the ability to bring this franchise back into relevance.
- 2:49Speaker 1: This was such a big hire for the Chicago Bears.
- 2:51Speaker 1: Not so much because of what Ben Johnson does with
- 2:54Speaker 1: the x's and o's and the trick plays and all that,
- 2:56Speaker 1: but that Ben Johnson chose them. He chose them. This
- 3:02Speaker 1: was the bell of the ball and not just this season,
- 3:05Speaker 1: but last season and the season before that. I could
- 3:09Speaker 1: tell you a really strong sourcing here that David Tepper
- 3:14Speaker 1: and the Carolina Panthers were ready to give Ben Johnson
- 3:17Speaker 1: everything he wanted two years ago, a UNC guy who
- 3:20Speaker 1: has real Carolina ties. He decided to not go that
- 3:23Speaker 1: route and to go back to Detroit. They have that
- 3:26Speaker 1: amazing offense. They go all the way to the NFC
- 3:28Speaker 1: Championship Game. I could tell you on really good sourcing
- 3:31Speaker 1: and really good reporting that the Washington commanders had Ben
- 3:35Speaker 1: Johnson circled as the guy, knowing they had the number
- 3:38Speaker 1: two overall pick and a young quarterback coming in Ben
- 3:40Speaker 1: Johnson with a new owner and all the stuff that
- 3:42Speaker 1: we're seeing with Dan Quinn right now. That could have
- 3:44Speaker 1: been Ben Johnson's opportunity. He said, no, I've got unfinished business.
- 3:49Speaker 1: I'm going back to Detroit, does another year with Detroit,
- 3:52Speaker 1: has another outstanding offensive season, and these teams are falling
- 3:56Speaker 1: over themselves to meet with them. He was very selective
- 3:58Speaker 1: with who he would actually talk with. It was Vegas,
- 4:01Speaker 1: it was Chicago, and it was Jacksonville. And at the
- 4:04Speaker 1: end of the day, he's choosing the Bears. Bears fans
- 4:10Speaker 1: take that in for a second. Ben Johnson has had
- 4:13Speaker 1: multiple opportunities to take head coaching jobs and has said
- 4:16Speaker 1: no thanks. He has had countless opportunities to interview with teams.
- 4:19Speaker 1: He said no thanks. He sought out this Bear's job.
- 4:23Speaker 1: Granted there's big money attached, but think about what Ryan
- 4:26Speaker 1: Poles had at stake here. You've already hired one coach
- 4:31Speaker 1: that was a failure in Matt Eberflus. You've already been
- 4:34Speaker 1: through multiple offensive coordinators that have been failures. You don't
- 4:37Speaker 1: get three cracks at this thing. As a guy who's
- 4:40Speaker 1: responsible for hiring a coach, Ryan Poles had to get
- 4:43Speaker 1: this right. And with talk of Eddie George interviewing on
- 4:47Speaker 1: Sunday and Mike McCarthy as one of the leaders in
- 4:49Speaker 1: the clubhouse, they got the bell of the ball, so
- 4:54Speaker 1: Bears fans this week, I don't know, before you start
- 4:57Speaker 1: analyzing who his hires are and what they're gonna do,
- 5:00Speaker 1: and take a moment to just enjoy this that for
- 5:04Speaker 1: maybe the first time in forever, the really attractive girl
- 5:08Speaker 1: at the dance, she chose you. She chose you. She
- 5:13Speaker 1: could have had anyone, she could have had the jock,
- 5:15Speaker 1: she could have had the valedictorian. She chose you. That's
- 5:20Speaker 1: a big deal in Chicago. This was a home run Higher.
- 5:23Speaker 1: I don't know if he's a home run coach. It
- 5:25Speaker 1: was a home run Higher. Now let's bring it over
- 5:28Speaker 1: here to New York where the Jets are set to
- 5:30Speaker 1: make a higher. We're recording this on Tuesday morning. If
- 5:33Speaker 1: things go horrendously wrong, this doesn't happen and something went
- 5:37Speaker 1: off the rails. But from all I gather, the Jets
- 5:40Speaker 1: have zeroed in on Aaron Glenn to be their head coach.
- 5:43Speaker 1: I'm not sure there's an option number two for the
- 5:45Speaker 1: Jets at the moment. In fact, I think they were
- 5:47Speaker 1: very interested with the Mike Vrabel interview and that went
- 5:51Speaker 1: really well from both sides, and they thought, okay, maybe
- 5:55Speaker 1: Rabel took the Patriots job more than a week ago,
- 5:58Speaker 1: and in the days that have passed since, they have
- 6:01Speaker 1: met with countless different head coaching candidates. But Aaron Glenn
- 6:05Speaker 1: has always made the most sense. If you go back
- 6:07Speaker 1: into his history. He is an all time Jets player.
- 6:11Speaker 1: He was an All Pro for the New York Jets
- 6:13Speaker 1: during the Parcels era. But what I like more about
- 6:16Speaker 1: Aaron Glenn than his playing days and his obvious connection
- 6:19Speaker 1: to the Jets. I like the fact that he took
- 6:22Speaker 1: the road less traveled coming out of his NFL career.
- 6:27Speaker 1: Aaron Glenn was very deliberate about what he wanted to
- 6:30Speaker 1: do with his career, and it wasn't just skyrocket to
- 6:32Speaker 1: the front of the line. He wanted to wear many
- 6:35Speaker 1: different hats. He was a scouting assistant as his first job,
- 6:39Speaker 1: then he went to Cleveland and learned from that franchise.
- 6:42Speaker 1: Then he eventually went to New Orleans where he would
- 6:45Speaker 1: grow to be the defensive backs coach under Sean Payton
- 6:48Speaker 1: on those great Saints teams of the mid twoenty tens.
- 6:52Speaker 1: He ultimately gets his first coordinator job in Detroit and
- 6:56Speaker 1: saw a great success with the Detroit Lions defense that
- 7:00Speaker 1: was a very young and then be very injured, but
- 7:04Speaker 1: they found a way and in a big game Week eighteen,
- 7:07Speaker 1: put the clamps on Sam Darnold, which I think raised
- 7:09Speaker 1: a lot of eyebrows around the league about whether or
- 7:12Speaker 1: not Aaron Glenn's x's and o's and all that is legit.
- 7:14Speaker 2: It is.
- 7:17Speaker 1: What I like most about him, though, is who vouches
- 7:21Speaker 1: for him. Bill Parcells vouches for Aaron Glenn. If you
- 7:25Speaker 1: think that doesn't matter in twenty twenty five, that Bill
- 7:28Speaker 1: Parcells is some eighty or no, no, no, in this
- 7:30Speaker 1: market with that owner, Bill Parcells matters. Sean Payton vouches
- 7:36Speaker 1: for Aaron Glenn. If you don't think that matters, I say,
- 7:38Speaker 1: trust me. In the NFL circles Sean Payton, who is
- 7:42Speaker 1: in everybody's best friend when he vouches for you and
- 7:44Speaker 1: says that's my guy that matters. Again, this might be
- 7:49Speaker 1: the right higher I don't know if it works out,
- 7:52Speaker 1: but it makes sense as far as the hire goes.
- 7:54Speaker 1: I will say this, and I've been critical of this
- 7:56Speaker 1: Jets process. Put it out there. They didn't meet with
- 8:00Speaker 1: any of the top offensive coaches. They didn't They didn't
- 8:05Speaker 1: meet with Todd Monkin, they didn't meet with Cliff Kingsbury,
- 8:09Speaker 1: they didn't meet with Liam Cohen, they didn't meet with
- 8:12Speaker 1: Kellen Moore, and they didn't even get an opportunity to
- 8:15Speaker 1: meet with Ben Johnson. Now, granted, they did meet with
- 8:17Speaker 1: some I think the world of Matt Naggy. I think
- 8:19Speaker 1: that's a worthy interview, but Joe Brady's coaching against Matt Naggy,
- 8:24Speaker 1: and the Jets didn't get a chance to speak with him.
- 8:26Speaker 1: You go down the list a lot of these offensive
- 8:29Speaker 1: wonderkin minds that are interviewing for head coaching jobs. The
- 8:32Speaker 1: Jets just did not bring them in. The Jets had
- 8:35Speaker 1: a different set of priorities, necessarily than what other teams have.
- 8:38Speaker 1: They're not looking for a quarterback whisperer. What they are
- 8:41Speaker 1: showing us with this hire and with this process of
- 8:44Speaker 1: interviewing guys like Vance Joseph and Joe Witt, and Ron
- 8:47Speaker 1: Rivera and Rex Ryan and Mike Locksley and Darren Rizzy
- 8:52Speaker 1: for the head coaching job of the New York Jets.
- 8:54Speaker 1: They're telling you they were looking for the CEO leader
- 8:57Speaker 1: of men type and they're figure out the offensive side
- 9:00Speaker 1: of the ball, and they'll figure out the x's and
- 9:02Speaker 1: o's and the hot shot, big name offensive of mind.
- 9:07Speaker 1: Wasn't necessarily what they were looking for with this hire. Again,
- 9:11Speaker 1: time will tell. But Aaron Glenn, on the surface, I
- 9:16Speaker 1: don't care how the process got there. I think he
- 9:18Speaker 1: is a worthy head coaching candidate and is a fine
- 9:21Speaker 1: pick considering the Jets market, the people who vouch for him,
- 9:26Speaker 1: and his connection to the franchise, and oh yeah, his
- 9:29Speaker 1: own resume. The fact that he's worn all those hats.
- 9:32Speaker 1: I dig that all right. So that leaves the Raiders,
- 9:35Speaker 1: the Saints, the Jaguars, and it leaves the Cowboys. Where
- 9:40Speaker 1: are they going to go? Well, we're recording this on Tuesday.
- 9:43Speaker 1: We might have some more dominoes dropping. But if you
- 9:45Speaker 1: think that Vrabel, Johnson and Glenn, who are universally considered
- 9:49Speaker 1: three really good head coaching candidates are off the board.
- 9:52Speaker 1: Let's play a little mix and match for the Jaguars.
- 9:56Speaker 1: Some interesting names. One of them who's been there twice
- 9:58Speaker 1: is Liam Cohen, who was a guest on our show.
- 10:01Speaker 1: And I would really urge you to go find that
- 10:03Speaker 1: YouTube interview or listen to it on Spotify or unesor
- 10:06Speaker 1: wherever you get your iHeart podcasts. Liam's really bright, really smart,
- 10:11Speaker 1: and I think the thought is you put him with
- 10:13Speaker 1: Trevor Lawrence, a young, bright offensive technician. Maybe that makes sense.
- 10:19Speaker 1: Robert Sala has now got two interviews with the Jaguars
- 10:23Speaker 1: on the books. Robert Sala, who is unceremoniously fired after
- 10:26Speaker 1: five weeks of football with the Jets this season. Could
- 10:28Speaker 1: he get a head coaching job the next Well? Why
- 10:30Speaker 1: Robert Sala? Robert Sala very respected defensive coach, also a
- 10:34Speaker 1: very respected guy in that organization where he did spend
- 10:38Speaker 1: some time in the mid two thousand pens. Sala to
- 10:43Speaker 1: the Jaguars after being fired, It's all possible. It's all
- 10:47Speaker 1: on the board. I would also look to the Raiders
- 10:51Speaker 1: and say what do they do because here you have
- 10:53Speaker 1: a blank slate, and you have Brady, and you have
- 10:56Speaker 1: money and you have Mark Davis, and you have private
- 10:59Speaker 1: jets from their owners that are being provided. But like,
- 11:04Speaker 1: would I be shocked if Pete Carroll was the next
- 11:06Speaker 1: day coach of the Las Vegas Raiders. Not one bit.
- 11:10Speaker 1: Pete Carroll comes in stabilizes things. They don't have a quarterback,
- 11:13Speaker 1: they don't necessarily have a GM hired yet. Pete Carroll
- 11:16Speaker 1: could come in and maybe just be that voice of
- 11:18Speaker 1: reason for a couple of years and help transition into
- 11:21Speaker 1: whatever the next phase is, the long play, even though
- 11:23Speaker 1: it seems like a short term higher but the Raiders
- 11:29Speaker 1: might also go with a young hot shot. We will
- 11:32Speaker 1: see what they do. Cowboys, the Dion stuff was fun.
- 11:36Speaker 1: That's fading away a little bit right now. Names like
- 11:39Speaker 1: Robert Sala and Kellen Moore and Brian Schottenheimer being batted around.
- 11:43Speaker 1: I don't know if you're doing, you know, runs around
- 11:46Speaker 1: the living room if you're a Cowboys fan over those names.
- 11:49Speaker 1: But all along, I don't know if Jerry Jones going
- 11:52Speaker 1: for the big swing big hire was ever actually gonna happen.
- 11:55Speaker 1: I think they enjoyed the Dion buzz and that was
- 11:58Speaker 1: a great story for a week that kept us afloat
- 12:00Speaker 1: on this podcast. That also kept us a float on
- 12:02Speaker 1: Good Morning Football. But we'll see if they actually go
- 12:05Speaker 1: that route. We haven't seen many more conversations about that
- 12:08Speaker 1: in the past seven days. I would think more of
- 12:10Speaker 1: a higher of those types of names, Kellen Shoddy, guys
- 12:15Speaker 1: who know Jerry, Guys that Jerry knows, and guys that
- 12:18Speaker 1: can work with Dak Prescott. Last, but not least, the Saints.
- 12:23Speaker 1: Here's a real interesting part of this Saints thing. For
- 12:26Speaker 1: the first time in New Orleans City's history, they've got
- 12:29Speaker 1: like eight inches of snow today. A lot of flights
- 12:31Speaker 1: have been canceled. They were planning on having Aaron Glenn
- 12:34Speaker 1: come in tomorrow. If Aaron Glenn could get out of
- 12:36Speaker 1: this Jets interview and at least have one last look
- 12:39Speaker 1: with the say, I don't know if that could happen
- 12:40Speaker 1: based on the flight schedule, that might expedite things with him,
- 12:42Speaker 1: to say, you know what Jets here here offers on
- 12:44Speaker 1: the table. I can't even get to New Orleans. I'm
- 12:47Speaker 1: not even gonna bother with that interview. But I'm not
- 12:49Speaker 1: sure New Orleans is that attractive a job right now.
- 12:51Speaker 2: Now.
- 12:51Speaker 1: Look, Mickey loomis very well respected, very well regarded and
- 12:56Speaker 1: an all around legend in the game for building teams
- 12:59Speaker 1: in Seattle and in New Orleans that have played at
- 13:02Speaker 1: the highest of levels. But you got Derek Carr with
- 13:05Speaker 1: forty million dollars due to him, You've got a bunch
- 13:09Speaker 1: of players who are aging out of the primes of
- 13:11Speaker 1: their career. And then you got some wild cards there
- 13:14Speaker 1: that you might like in a Lave and Camara, who
- 13:17Speaker 1: we're not sure how they fit with a quarterback situation
- 13:20Speaker 1: that's going to have to change in the next few years.
- 13:22Speaker 1: It's not going to be Derek Carr for the next
- 13:24Speaker 1: decade or the next four or five years. So I
- 13:26Speaker 1: think there's a lot of questions in New Orleans. It's
- 13:27Speaker 1: also the thirty first market, I think, as far as
- 13:30Speaker 1: size goes. If you're a coach who's looking for bright
- 13:33Speaker 1: lights and you want that big challenge, a Dallas, a
- 13:36Speaker 1: New York and of course a Las Vegas with Brady
- 13:39Speaker 1: and all that comes with that might be a more
- 13:42Speaker 1: appealing option than going down to New Orleans. We'll see
- 13:46Speaker 1: how it all plays out. Last year, Dan Quinn was
- 13:49Speaker 1: the last coach hired and was kind of like hired
- 13:51Speaker 1: with like eh Dan Quinn Ghost Washington. He was the
- 13:54Speaker 1: best first year coach out of all these guys. A
- 13:57Speaker 1: couple of years back, Matt Naggy lost a playoff game
- 14:00Speaker 1: to the Tennessee Titans at home and was hired two
- 14:02Speaker 1: days later, and everyone was like, what he was the
- 14:04Speaker 1: coach of the year. The very next season, Brian Dable
- 14:08Speaker 1: wasn't everybody's first pick in New York. He was a
- 14:11Speaker 1: coach of the year. Time will tell. But if you're
- 14:14Speaker 1: telling me the higher and who got it done and
- 14:17Speaker 1: who wins this whole cycle, well, the Patriots are very
- 14:20Speaker 1: happy with Mike Vrabel. But for the Bears to get
- 14:23Speaker 1: Ben Johnson, that's a pretty pretty cool deal for Chicago.
- 14:28Speaker 1: Kudos to Ryan Poles, the McCaskey family, and of course
- 14:31Speaker 1: Kevin Warren, their president. I don't know if he's gonna
- 14:34Speaker 1: be a good head coach, but they got the bell,
- 14:35Speaker 1: the ball, and as far as first steps go, that
- 14:38Speaker 1: one is huge. We've got an all time guest coming up.
- 14:41Speaker 1: Mike Turrico's going to join us. I'm giggling just at
- 14:44Speaker 1: the thought of the fact that our POD's going to
- 14:46Speaker 1: have the voice of so many huge moments and truly
- 14:48Speaker 1: a guy who's become a great mentor and friend of mine.
- 14:50Speaker 1: In a second, but before we get to that, we've
- 14:52Speaker 1: got to go to a game that he's not calling.
- 14:55Speaker 1: I want to bring on my producer and pal, Aaron
- 14:58Speaker 1: wan Kaufman, who've been doing this for three years. Erin
- 15:00Speaker 1: and you have been the voice of Bills fans for
- 15:03Speaker 1: three years. You are on the doorstep of the first
- 15:05Speaker 1: Super Bowl appearance since nineteen ninety four for the Buffalo Bills,
- 15:12Speaker 1: and I gotta say, I think there's a real shot
- 15:15Speaker 1: this year. I feel differently, and the fact that Mark
- 15:19Speaker 1: Andrews dropped that two point conversion tells me that maybe
- 15:23Speaker 1: this franchise, the curse is over, whatever it is. But
- 15:27Speaker 1: who am I to speak. I'm just an objective guy
- 15:30Speaker 1: who picks the Chiefs every year to win. Aaron Bill's
- 15:32Speaker 1: fan your take now, five days out from another AFC
- 15:35Speaker 1: Championship appearance.
- 15:36Speaker 3: I mean, it was an incredible game against the Ravens,
- 15:39Speaker 3: and I was texting with one of my best friends
- 15:41Speaker 3: from college. He's a Baltimore native, huge Ravens fan. We
- 15:44Speaker 3: were on a group text and I think both of
- 15:46Speaker 3: us were so impressed with the game overall. I was
- 15:51Speaker 3: we're both doom and gloom. We're both having fun. I
- 15:54Speaker 3: stood up when that pass went to Mark Andrews, and
- 15:57Speaker 3: I just thought he caught it, and I just closed
- 15:59Speaker 3: my eyes. I thought it was over. And then my
- 16:01Speaker 3: partner was like, he didn't catch it, and I was like, wait,
- 16:04Speaker 3: oh my god. So what an incredible game. I mean,
- 16:08Speaker 3: like the Ravens are great. I think I was terrified.
- 16:12Speaker 3: I'm so impressed with the Bills putting all that pressure
- 16:16Speaker 3: on Lamar other than the third quarter, like Derrick Henry
- 16:19Speaker 3: didn't even have I heard this stat. Derek Henry had
- 16:22Speaker 3: less yards this weekend than he did on the first
- 16:24Speaker 3: run of the game earlier in the season, which also
- 16:28Speaker 3: means he destroyed us that game. But here we are
- 16:32Speaker 3: back again with Kansas City since twenty twenty. I mean,
- 16:36Speaker 3: we just keep running into them, except for the Bengals
- 16:39Speaker 3: at one time. But it is it's the hill we
- 16:43Speaker 3: have to climb every single time. And the you know,
- 16:48Speaker 3: I think many times throughout the season you've asked me
- 16:50Speaker 3: about the Bills, and every time I'm really quick to
- 16:52Speaker 3: just be like, they can't stop the run.
- 16:53Speaker 1: They're not.
- 16:54Speaker 3: This is a rebuilding year. Who knows this feels exciting.
- 17:00Speaker 3: I don't. It's so easy to get your hopes up,
- 17:03Speaker 3: and I think Bills in particular, like there's just been
- 17:07Speaker 3: a lot of We've been a lot part of a
- 17:09Speaker 3: lot of great games, and we always seem to lose them.
- 17:13Speaker 3: It would really be great to just completely put the
- 17:18Speaker 3: clamps down on Kansas City because this team is doing
- 17:24Speaker 3: so well in a different way than everything you expect
- 17:27Speaker 3: from Josh Allen. This team is like like they did
- 17:29Speaker 3: against Baltimore, they just bully balled their way into running.
- 17:33Speaker 3: They're going out with extra offensive linemen putting pressure on Lamar.
- 17:38Speaker 3: I don't know. I'm incredibly nervous and I can't wait too.
- 17:44Speaker 1: I love that take. I believe you're talking about complimentary football,
- 17:47Speaker 1: which is something not a lot of people expected. But
- 17:50Speaker 1: give Brendan being credit. He was willing to let Stefan
- 17:54Speaker 1: Diggs walk out that door. I think they had to.
- 17:56Speaker 1: I think that was a big addition by subtraction, if
- 17:58Speaker 1: we're talking real, I think he was fine letting Gabe
- 18:02Speaker 1: Davis leave despite being a twenty four year old stud
- 18:05Speaker 1: for this team at wider and found a way to
- 18:09Speaker 1: mix and match and put it together. I think the
- 18:10Speaker 1: stat that Nanson Romo gave and I could be wrong,
- 18:13Speaker 1: was They've had thirty rushing touchdowns and thirty receiving touchdowns
- 18:18Speaker 1: this year, which is like an insane number and shows
- 18:21Speaker 1: just complete balance from Joe Brady. I think they also
- 18:25Speaker 1: had the most players on a roster score a touchdown,
- 18:29Speaker 1: whether it be receiving or rushing, which is great. And
- 18:31Speaker 1: even in the biggest moments last week, it was like
- 18:35Speaker 1: Ty Johnson, who's been a great third down back making
- 18:37Speaker 1: huge plays, Ray Davis making huge plays, Keon Coleman making
- 18:42Speaker 1: big plays, Mac Collins, Mac Collins has been Mac Collins
- 18:46Speaker 1: is their gunner on special teams, and they're leading receiver
- 18:49Speaker 1: with touchdowns this year, which just tells you how different
- 18:52Speaker 1: in blue collar this team. Is my question to you,
- 18:55Speaker 1: and I pose this not knowing what your answer is,
- 18:59Speaker 1: because it could be as simple. Are you kidding? Of course,
- 19:02Speaker 1: we'd want it the other way. As I'm watching Saturdays
- 19:07Speaker 1: Texans Chiefs game as a football purist and as a
- 19:10Speaker 1: fan and as someone who cherishes the history of it,
- 19:14Speaker 1: I'm watching that game and I'm rooting really hard for
- 19:19Speaker 1: the history of it all for it to be the Chiefs,
- 19:21Speaker 1: because I think for Lamar and Josh. It's not the
- 19:24Speaker 1: same if you go through Stroud, and I know that
- 19:28Speaker 1: sounds dismissive to the Texans. I think their time might come.
- 19:30Speaker 1: Maybe not. But if you just think about, like the
- 19:32Speaker 1: pure history, if Josh Allen got to the Super Bowl,
- 19:36Speaker 1: but he did so by knocking off Bo Nicks, Lamar Jackson,
- 19:41Speaker 1: and c J. Stroud, I think it's a little different
- 19:43Speaker 1: than going through Bo Nicks, Lamar Jackson, and then Mahomes
- 19:46Speaker 1: in Mahomes's building. As a Bills fan, you might say
- 19:50Speaker 1: that I would much rather just play the Texans and
- 19:54Speaker 1: them throwing the ball at number fourteen Jared Wayne and
- 19:57Speaker 1: John Metchi than having to deal with Travis Kelcey and
- 20:00Speaker 1: Patrick Mahomes.
- 20:02Speaker 3: I think for me personally, you hit it round the
- 20:04Speaker 3: headlake he Mahomes is the piece and I want the
- 20:10Speaker 3: Bills to win the Super Bowl first and foremost, but
- 20:12Speaker 3: maybe even more than that, I want the Bills to
- 20:15Speaker 3: knock Mahomes out. I didn't care if the Ravens won.
- 20:19Speaker 3: I wanted Lamar to knock Mahomes out like this, I
- 20:22Speaker 3: don't think is only for Bills in Baltimore fans. Kansas
- 20:26Speaker 3: City is the dynasty is the top. They're the villain.
- 20:29Speaker 3: I mean, like, I think it didn't help that, you know,
- 20:32Speaker 3: they had the bye and then they play Houston, and
- 20:35Speaker 3: like if they had played the Ravens first and had
- 20:38Speaker 3: this really tough game, it might be different. But no,
- 20:41Speaker 3: I want Josh Allen to come in. I want him
- 20:43Speaker 3: to go toe to tote with Mahomes. I want von
- 20:46Speaker 3: Miller to get a stripsack on Mahome. Like I want
- 20:49Speaker 3: everyone to have their day against Kansas City, because Kansas
- 20:52Speaker 3: City is the one that keeps stopping us. It's so
- 20:55Speaker 3: much more important and full of vengeance that if that
- 20:59Speaker 3: result can be a complete return to the people who
- 21:04Speaker 3: keep beating us in their state, if we can beat them,
- 21:08Speaker 3: that'd be so much more fulfilling. I would say, there's
- 21:10Speaker 3: two whole games left, but.
- 21:13Speaker 2: That would be huge.
- 21:14Speaker 1: All right, let me just before we get to our guests,
- 21:17Speaker 1: let me just put you in two different sets of shoes.
- 21:22Speaker 1: Fourth quarter bills are up thirty one ten in Arrowhead,
- 21:28Speaker 1: and they show some Arrowhead fans leaving the building with
- 21:31Speaker 1: about two minutes left, and Nanson Romo just say, like
- 21:34Speaker 1: it was just Josh Allen's time. That's one set of shoes.
- 21:40Speaker 1: The other set of shoes for you as a Bills fan.
- 21:44Speaker 1: Fourth quarter, down, five three seconds left, You're on the
- 21:49Speaker 1: one yard line, Josh Allen's there. It's twenty five twenty.
- 21:54Speaker 1: They call hike, and Josh Allen plows behind Dion Dawkins
- 21:58Speaker 1: and you guys win a walk off style win in
- 22:01Speaker 1: Arrowhead to send them home packing. What's the more satisfying win.
- 22:05Speaker 3: The first one to just demolish them. I mean, that
- 22:08Speaker 3: would be amazing to get a walk off. But I
- 22:10Speaker 3: want I want the Bills to I want this to
- 22:14Speaker 3: be a statement, you know. I don't want this to
- 22:16Speaker 3: be something where even with the Ravens game, I think
- 22:20Speaker 3: the Ravens played incredibly well other than the turnovers, obviously,
- 22:23Speaker 3: but the story from the Ravens game is, oh my god,
- 22:26Speaker 3: Mark Andrews dropped that pass, Oh my god, Mark Andrews fumbled,
- 22:29Speaker 3: Oh my god, Lamar through that interception. I want the
- 22:32Speaker 3: Bills to win, and I went the story to be
- 22:34Speaker 3: about the Bills winning, not oh that you know Kansas
- 22:37Speaker 3: City missed this and Josh was able to sneak around.
- 22:41Speaker 3: You always got to defend him run in that way. No,
- 22:43Speaker 3: I want this to just be the Bills came in
- 22:45Speaker 3: there and it's to steal from Bill Simmons. Nobody believed
- 22:50Speaker 3: to us, and we just went at them. And I
- 22:53Speaker 3: would much rather that this game ends with Mitch Trubisky
- 22:57Speaker 3: taking a kneel down, because like, we've just totally taken
- 23:01Speaker 3: them out of it. Yeah, the first one.
- 23:05Speaker 1: Can I give my last take? And Kyle and I
- 23:07Speaker 1: were talking about this in the commercial break on Good
- 23:08Speaker 1: Morning Football Comberate my colleague. I think the outrage and
- 23:12Speaker 1: the outcry and the public hysteria over the officiating last
- 23:16Speaker 1: week actually might help the Bills a little bit going
- 23:19Speaker 1: into this game. I think there's going to be a
- 23:21Speaker 1: great sensitivity. This has been a big talking point about
- 23:25Speaker 1: Mahomes flopping and mahomes sideline antics. I actually think the
- 23:29Speaker 1: refs are going to be really, really sensitive to that,
- 23:33Speaker 1: and I don't think he necessarily gets some of those
- 23:35Speaker 1: Jordan rules calls that mj and Lebron have gotten in
- 23:39Speaker 1: the past and that Mahomes seemingly gets. I think that
- 23:41Speaker 1: was actually a great advantage for the Bills going into
- 23:44Speaker 1: this thing, because that has been one of the number
- 23:46Speaker 1: one topics in sports this week, the way that Mahomes
- 23:48Speaker 1: games are officiated, and you better believe the league office
- 23:51Speaker 1: is very aware of that.
- 23:52Speaker 3: And the three peat is a great news story. It's historic.
- 23:57Speaker 3: There are other things that are historic. If the Bills
- 23:59Speaker 3: win the super Bowl, that's historic. If Jaden Daniels can
- 24:03Speaker 3: take his team to the super Bowl, that's historic. Is
- 24:06Speaker 3: not the only fun narrative that we have here. So
- 24:10Speaker 3: I think that you know, there are a lot of
- 24:13Speaker 3: great outcomes we could have, and I think for everyone
- 24:17Speaker 3: in Western New York there's one in particular, and that
- 24:19Speaker 3: would be, like you said, thirty one to ten, Josh
- 24:21Speaker 3: is sitting on the bench. He's shaking hands.
- 24:25Speaker 1: Beggars can't be choosers. We'll see how it all plays out. Aaron,
- 24:29Speaker 1: great stuff. Mike Turco is our guest. He's up after this,
- 24:42Speaker 1: all right, with no further ado. It's one of my
- 24:44Speaker 1: favorite people in the world and the voice of so
- 24:47Speaker 1: many amazing moments in so many different sports. He's also
- 24:51Speaker 1: just a total mench and a mentor and big brother
- 24:54Speaker 1: of mine in this industry. Has been really good to
- 24:56Speaker 1: me over the years, and he's been good enough to
- 24:57Speaker 1: give us some time despite his season finally being over.
- 25:01Speaker 1: NBC Sports, the voice of everything, mister Mike Turico, how
- 25:04Speaker 1: are we doing so.
- 25:05Speaker 2: Strange the postseason? My postseason has now arrived, and so
- 25:10Speaker 2: it's a good thing you're getting me early, because about
- 25:12Speaker 2: three days away from this gray Beard and all this
- 25:15Speaker 2: stuff in a week and just shutting it down, you're
- 25:18Speaker 2: going to.
- 25:18Speaker 1: Look like Tom Hanks and Castaways.
- 25:20Speaker 2: Well not exactly, but you get what's it.
- 25:26Speaker 1: Like when you're done but the rest of the games
- 25:29Speaker 1: aren't done. It's just like I guess Troy and Joe
- 25:31Speaker 1: are feeling it this week too. You called your last
- 25:33Speaker 1: game and the show goes on and we all move
- 25:36Speaker 1: right along, but like we're done hearing your voice for
- 25:38Speaker 1: the next eight months.
- 25:40Speaker 2: The weird part is, honestly, is that it is, you know,
- 25:44Speaker 2: and it's not like we're building a building or we're
- 25:47Speaker 2: not building bridges or digging ditches. But it is work right,
- 25:50Speaker 2: and it's every day. As you know, there's no off
- 25:54Speaker 2: day in the NFL season when you do what we do.
- 25:57Speaker 2: So for gosh, twenty weeks plus a couple of preseason
- 26:01Speaker 2: weeks time seven days, so one hundred and forty five
- 26:03Speaker 2: to fifty days every single day is something watch GMFB,
- 26:08Speaker 2: listen to a pod start building my boards, add a game,
- 26:12Speaker 2: talk to folks, and then you just drop off the cliff.
- 26:15Speaker 1: So it's it.
- 26:16Speaker 2: See, I got in the flight on Monday, ago, Okay,
- 26:20Speaker 2: I don't have to start thinking about Okay, have we
- 26:22Speaker 2: had these teams? What's the deal? How much carryover stuff?
- 26:26Speaker 2: What's that nugget on Liam Cohen that I didn't get
- 26:29Speaker 2: during the regular season?
- 26:30Speaker 3: That are like damn.
- 26:32Speaker 2: Every game you walk out of it and you go, oh,
- 26:33Speaker 2: I can't believe I didn't get to tell this story
- 26:36Speaker 2: or that story. Right, So you start thinking about that
- 26:38Speaker 2: and it's just a daily process. So when it ends,
- 26:41Speaker 2: it is really like you're hitting a wall, falling off
- 26:44Speaker 2: a cliff, all that stuff, and you rediscover important things like, oh,
- 26:48Speaker 2: I've got a thousand thank you notes to write, yo,
- 26:51Speaker 2: the registration for the car needs to be done, all
- 26:54Speaker 2: that stuff that you put a suspended animation. You start
- 26:57Speaker 2: digging out.
- 26:58Speaker 1: I always say this, and Daniel Jeremiah is the best.
- 27:01Speaker 1: You do the draft together, right, we both talk about this.
- 27:04Speaker 1: A lot of people talk about season being over. Go
- 27:06Speaker 1: to Vegas. Whatever it is you do to celebrate, go
- 27:08Speaker 1: to Daniel says. The Saturday night shower after the draft
- 27:13Speaker 1: when he's done with three days, and he says it
- 27:16Speaker 1: is the most rewarding thing of his year to just
- 27:19Speaker 1: know I could just it's all over. I did it,
- 27:22Speaker 1: It's done, and we could start anew But like I
- 27:25Speaker 1: guess that's how you almost feel when you land back
- 27:27Speaker 1: in Michigan after doing another incredible, incredible TV moment that
- 27:32Speaker 1: Rams Eagles incredible divisional round.
- 27:35Speaker 2: Game, the fun and good snow. And I'll say you
- 27:37Speaker 2: so that Monday, I got Monday, I got home, and
- 27:40Speaker 2: I sat down and you just kind of start doing
- 27:42Speaker 2: some basic stuff and go, oh, national championship games tonight.
- 27:46Speaker 2: And who knew Chris Faller has been a friend since
- 27:49Speaker 2: nineteen ninety one, so this is might you know, and
- 27:51Speaker 2: said Herbie a couple of years after this, this are
- 27:53Speaker 2: two of my best best pals in the business. And
- 27:56Speaker 2: I just texted him with luck have a great game,
- 27:58Speaker 2: and I was just gonna sit back and watch the
- 27:59Speaker 2: game and not I don't have to divide attention to Nope,
- 28:03Speaker 2: We're on a few notes while I'm doing this, because
- 28:05Speaker 2: usually my Mondays are you get home, you have a
- 28:07Speaker 2: nice dinner, my wife and I sit down, start to
- 28:09Speaker 2: watch the Monday night game. And then I open up
- 28:11Speaker 2: the laptop and I start to get a little bit
- 28:13Speaker 2: ahead on the team. But just to sit and watch
- 28:15Speaker 2: a game was just so much fun. It's relaxing. But
- 28:18Speaker 2: you're right, Peter, like you miss that assignment, no doubt
- 28:24Speaker 2: until you sit down next week and then watch the
- 28:26Speaker 2: games and I just watch those guys just do it
- 28:28Speaker 2: and have fun. And next year, you know, fortunately is
- 28:30Speaker 2: our super Bowl season. So next year we only not
- 28:34Speaker 2: only have the super Bowl, next year we have the Olympics,
- 28:36Speaker 2: which start right at the end of the Super Bowl.
- 28:38Speaker 2: The Winter Olympics in Italy are right the Friday of
- 28:42Speaker 2: Super Bowl weekend in Santa Clara is the start of
- 28:45Speaker 2: the Olympics in Italy. So we're going to be cranking through.
- 28:48Speaker 2: So I'm enjoying every second of these couple of weeks
- 28:51Speaker 2: because next year that plus we start with the NBA
- 28:54Speaker 2: on NBC, so we're going to be cranking away all
- 28:57Speaker 2: fall in with the next year. So I'm enjoying these
- 28:59Speaker 2: couple of days for sure.
- 29:00Speaker 1: And I have to think that this year was not
- 29:04Speaker 1: just football because you were in pair for the Olympics
- 29:07Speaker 1: and it carried right through and you were the voice
- 29:09Speaker 1: of that and Obviously there was a lot of fanfare
- 29:13Speaker 1: over Snoops appearances, but beyond Snoop, I mean you were
- 29:16Speaker 1: you were unbelievable, and that's not a two day assignment.
- 29:19Speaker 1: And then you go right from there into training camp,
- 29:21Speaker 1: into preseason and then boom, football hits you like a
- 29:24Speaker 1: ton of bricks.
- 29:25Speaker 2: Yeah, this was the longest run that I know I've had,
- 29:28Speaker 2: just because it started with really from the Kentucky Derby
- 29:31Speaker 2: in May through because you had the couple of Triple
- 29:35Speaker 2: Crown races, the Indy five hundred, and then June was
- 29:38Speaker 2: all the Olympic trials, making Team USA, which spilled right
- 29:41Speaker 2: into the US Open British Open Golf, which is really
- 29:45Speaker 2: the Open. But then that was right into the Olympics,
- 29:48Speaker 2: and the run just got home, had a week off.
- 29:50Speaker 2: We had a family friend get married that weekend after
- 29:53Speaker 2: the Olympics and before our preseason game, and then off.
- 29:57Speaker 2: So it's been a long run, but it's been it's
- 29:58Speaker 2: been great. Such a good year too. You know, sometimes
- 30:01Speaker 2: sometimes you get in ruts where you don't have great games.
- 30:03Speaker 2: We got lucky on Sunday night. We had so many
- 30:06Speaker 2: good and exciting games. Like you said, we got to
- 30:08Speaker 2: wrap up with an even more exciting game than the
- 30:11Speaker 2: first Eagles Rams game that we had, which was Barkley
- 30:14Speaker 2: GoF for two fifty five. He kind of does a
- 30:17Speaker 2: top five all time playoff rushing appearance in the playoffs
- 30:21Speaker 2: in the snow at home in Philly with the Rams
- 30:24Speaker 2: coming down the field with a chance to win the game.
- 30:26Speaker 2: It was really really one of those cool memorable postseason games.
- 30:29Speaker 1: Broadcaster question for you. So there's the four A crews obviously,
- 30:35Speaker 1: and we're down to the final four games, so you
- 30:38Speaker 1: each get it that Sunday night you're calling Tampa versus Washington.
- 30:44Speaker 1: You don't know the assignment yet for next week. When
- 30:46Speaker 1: do you find out that, hey, we don't have Bills
- 30:50Speaker 1: versus Ravens. Obviously that's going to CBS, but we actually
- 30:53Speaker 1: have an early windows Sunday game, which is not our
- 30:56Speaker 1: natural place. When do you find out all that information? Obviously,
- 30:59Speaker 1: Mike North and the schedule gods are working on it.
- 31:01Speaker 1: Do you get a note past you during the game
- 31:03Speaker 1: or is it after you're already back in the hotel.
- 31:05Speaker 2: So it's you. We usually announce it before we go
- 31:08Speaker 2: off there. So I'll get I'll leave, I'll leave it
- 31:12Speaker 2: unnamed I get, I'll get a friend from one of
- 31:13Speaker 2: the networks text me, like, middle of the second quarter,
- 31:15Speaker 2: hat you know yet? Because usually the league knows, but
- 31:18Speaker 2: they really keep it so that only one or two
- 31:20Speaker 2: people know. So I didn't know until our game in
- 31:24Speaker 2: Tampa ended, until z Gonzalez duikes it in. Only then
- 31:27Speaker 2: did I know where we were going At some point.
- 31:31Speaker 2: Usually right before that, you may know the options or
- 31:34Speaker 2: where we're going to be a Sunday early game, Sunday earlier,
- 31:37Speaker 2: Sunday late. It all varies. I think if that result
- 31:40Speaker 2: of that game changes, we are in a different place
- 31:42Speaker 2: for a different game. So it is kind of fun.
- 31:44Speaker 2: So there have been Usually it's in that break before that,
- 31:47Speaker 2: our producer Rob Hiland will say, hey, here's a peak
- 31:50Speaker 2: of the schedule. We're going to show it coming out
- 31:51Speaker 2: of the next break. He's got to take it. And
- 31:53Speaker 2: that's the same thing with Week eighteen too.
- 31:55Speaker 1: Yeah, does it feel like the tournament reveal show?
- 31:58Speaker 2: Like it does a little bit like I wish I
- 32:00Speaker 2: wish we didn't have to fly through it in thirty
- 32:02Speaker 2: seconds because you want to start digesting it because okay,
- 32:05Speaker 2: the early window, this will be the the late window.
- 32:07Speaker 2: That'll be decided and you kind of know what game
- 32:09Speaker 2: is left at the end. It is fun and you know,
- 32:12Speaker 2: for us, we want to know where we're going, but
- 32:14Speaker 2: you also want to are they teams you know really
- 32:16Speaker 2: well teams you've had all that stuff, and so it's
- 32:20Speaker 2: it makes her a lot of fun, but you don't
- 32:21Speaker 2: find out until really the end of that Tampa game.
- 32:25Speaker 2: I did not know where we were going. And Sunday
- 32:28Speaker 2: at three o'clock is a little bit different. You know,
- 32:29Speaker 2: you've become creatures of habit. Right if you did Good
- 32:32Speaker 2: Morning Football at five o'clock in the afternoon, it would
- 32:34Speaker 2: still weird totally. So for us doing at three o'clock
- 32:37Speaker 2: Sunday afternoon game, I was I was lost all day, Like, wait,
- 32:41Speaker 2: a different time zone, right, Like what I truly at
- 32:44Speaker 2: seven to fifteen in the morning said, Okay, this game
- 32:46Speaker 2: kicks off five hours before normal, so right now it
- 32:48Speaker 2: should feel like twelve fifteen. I just want to make
- 32:50Speaker 2: sure I had like the right stuff ready. So it
- 32:52Speaker 2: wasn't panicking around the hotel trying to get ready, but
- 32:55Speaker 2: it was. It was cool and the weather timing was
- 32:57Speaker 2: incredible with the snow in Philadelphia to start dry begin
- 33:01Speaker 2: snow have a change over. It was. It was so
- 33:04Speaker 2: much fun, such a fun game, all right.
- 33:07Speaker 1: One of the coolest things about being a voice in
- 33:11Speaker 1: the NFL is you get to speak with these players,
- 33:13Speaker 1: in these coaches the week of the games. Now it
- 33:16Speaker 1: used to be you're laying there on a Friday, You're
- 33:18Speaker 1: going to practice. Now a little bit more zoom than
- 33:21Speaker 1: in person, but I imagine you still get to see
- 33:23Speaker 1: these guys. Give us one thing you've gotten to know
- 33:27Speaker 1: about Jaden Daniels that the world should know, having done
- 33:30Speaker 1: his game obviously Sunday night against the Buccaneers.
- 33:34Speaker 2: So we had the Falcons game, Yeah, and the Falcons game.
- 33:36Speaker 2: So we go in on Friday still and go to
- 33:39Speaker 2: the home team practice. I think, and I tore my
- 33:41Speaker 2: achilles week eleven, so I missed like two weeks, three
- 33:45Speaker 2: weeks you getting Friday practice, and I felt lost. I
- 33:48Speaker 2: love doing it. I love sitting in the sea line
- 33:50Speaker 2: with people, and not only that, but being at practice,
- 33:54Speaker 2: getting a chance to talk to the people around the franchise, right,
- 33:59Speaker 2: and that's what helps give you, if not that nugget
- 34:02Speaker 2: to that feel and that confidence to say things. So
- 34:05Speaker 2: that's the preamble. Let me go backwards. Our one preseason
- 34:08Speaker 2: game was New England Washington, and you see you sit
- 34:12Speaker 2: there and you go, okay, we'll just come off the
- 34:14Speaker 2: Olympics and now we're gonna turn around to a preseason game,
- 34:17Speaker 2: the last preseason game where usually people don't play, but
- 34:22Speaker 2: it's two teams we do not have on our Sunday
- 34:24Speaker 2: night football schedule. And I remember when dan Quinn got up,
- 34:29Speaker 2: He's like, hey, I hope we end up seeing you
- 34:30Speaker 2: guys before the years over. Like I was thinking the
- 34:33Speaker 2: same thing. I hope we're gonna flex into a commander's game.
- 34:36Speaker 2: Both Chris and I walked out of there on the
- 34:39Speaker 2: drive back to our hotel like, this team feels like
- 34:42Speaker 2: they could do something. Now. Did we see them making
- 34:44Speaker 2: the NFC Championship game. No, but we both tabbed them
- 34:47Speaker 2: as like the team on the rise, that team that
- 34:50Speaker 2: had something unique going and man, it was great. So
- 34:55Speaker 2: the point to your question, we did sit with Jayden Daniels.
- 34:58Speaker 2: He didn't play in that preseason game, but we still
- 35:00Speaker 2: met with him because he was the guy, and man,
- 35:03Speaker 2: did you see why the whole building was is in
- 35:07Speaker 2: belief that this guy could be really good? Right away?
- 35:11Speaker 2: Fifty five starts Arizona State to LSU, so he's done
- 35:16Speaker 2: the leave one environment and system, go to a new
- 35:19Speaker 2: coaching staff, new teammates, win the room over, win the building,
- 35:22Speaker 2: over the work habits. That a guy who I think
- 35:26Speaker 2: is really someone who deserves a lot of credit in
- 35:29Speaker 2: both college and pro football this year but is not
- 35:31Speaker 2: getting it is Brian Kelly. Brian Kelly is hard on
- 35:36Speaker 2: quarterbacks as any of them who played for but he
- 35:39Speaker 2: makes them better. And he really helped Jayden Daniels go
- 35:42Speaker 2: from here to here just in the large ess of
- 35:45Speaker 2: it of how you go about game planning, how you
- 35:47Speaker 2: go about situational football. And you know, Brian Kelly and
- 35:51Speaker 2: the LSU staff made it possible for Jaden Daniels done
- 35:54Speaker 2: academically essentially his last year at LSU, to get in
- 35:58Speaker 2: the gym in the middle of the night and get
- 36:01Speaker 2: ready and VR stuff. So that's a reality concept. And
- 36:05Speaker 2: he brought all those great in incredible habits to his meetings,
- 36:09Speaker 2: He brought him all to his practices, and he brought
- 36:11Speaker 2: him all to Washington, and Washington gave him the ability
- 36:15Speaker 2: to kind of expand and do that. So, yeah, we
- 36:17Speaker 2: saw a little bit of why this could be really
- 36:21Speaker 2: good and there's no way you could forecast there'd be
- 36:24Speaker 2: a championship game. But just a close the thought on
- 36:26Speaker 2: Brian Kelly, Notre Dame is not in position to play
- 36:30Speaker 2: for the championship if Brian Kelly didn't elevate that place
- 36:34Speaker 2: all the way through the end and then he hired
- 36:36Speaker 2: Marcus Freemans he's defensive coordinator. If he did Marcus Freeman
- 36:39Speaker 2: three years in takes him to a championship NFL team
- 36:42Speaker 2: saying hey, this big guy, we should look at or
- 36:44Speaker 2: talk to you somewhere down the line sooner, if not later.
- 36:47Speaker 2: Brian Kelly did a lot of credit for some of
- 36:49Speaker 2: the success stories of this football season, and it is
- 36:52Speaker 2: not getting a lot of it. But Jade Daniels is
- 36:54Speaker 2: wonder those.
- 37:00Speaker 1: You've been in that premiere Sunday night seat for the
- 37:03Speaker 1: entire Josh Allen Mahomes our Borough era. You've seen these
- 37:08Speaker 1: guys enter the league and then play their biggest games
- 37:11Speaker 1: on those Sunday night regular season afternoons and evenings. What
- 37:16Speaker 1: makes Josh Allen a little bit different this year than
- 37:18Speaker 1: maybe years prior.
- 37:20Speaker 2: Peter, he just took that step from here to here
- 37:24Speaker 2: of greatness, growth and what does greatness growth mean? It
- 37:29Speaker 2: means I got the building, all right, I got the
- 37:32Speaker 2: whole building. Now it's not. And he was so good
- 37:36Speaker 2: about not saying it's Stefan Diggs or anything like that.
- 37:40Speaker 2: Just the oxygen in the building changes every year. Stefan
- 37:44Speaker 2: Diggs greatness, his ability to bring the bills so many
- 37:47Speaker 2: wins was a little bit of that receiver me attitude,
- 37:51Speaker 2: and that helped give this team. When Josh Allen was young,
- 37:55Speaker 2: young ledge, you got it exactly man. And now now
- 37:59Speaker 2: like Josh looks around the room and it's him and
- 38:02Speaker 2: he's got to be that guy and he has. Now
- 38:04Speaker 2: that doesn't mean Dion Dawkins doesn't have an impact. Bernard
- 38:08Speaker 2: on defense are all the von Miller's still in the
- 38:10Speaker 2: building and still in the room, right. So I'm not
- 38:12Speaker 2: saying this is a one man show. But I think
- 38:16Speaker 2: the fact that Josh is able to read the room
- 38:17Speaker 2: and says, Okay, I know I'm really, really, really good.
- 38:20Speaker 2: I know it's my time. I've got to lead these guys.
- 38:23Speaker 2: And he's got a little bit of Rascal in him.
- 38:25Speaker 2: He's the fun guy in the room, and you get
- 38:28Speaker 2: that every time you sit with Josh. There's a laugh,
- 38:30Speaker 2: it's a humor, it's a it's never an edge, it's
- 38:32Speaker 2: always good. But you know, when it comes down to
- 38:35Speaker 2: the business, he's got he's got the buffaloes to do it,
- 38:38Speaker 2: you know. So I love the way he took that
- 38:41Speaker 2: step this year. And that's one of the things that
- 38:45Speaker 2: you can see. Okay, it's not just Lamar Mahomes Burrow,
- 38:49Speaker 2: it's can you carry the Bills franchise? And this generation
- 38:54Speaker 2: of Bill's Mafia. The younger fans only know about Jim
- 38:59Speaker 2: and Thurman and Bruce and Andre Reid from T shirts
- 39:03Speaker 2: and sweatshirts that their parents still wear and all that stuff.
- 39:06Speaker 4: A documentaries, you know exactly, and Marv Levy's singing his
- 39:12Speaker 4: go Bill's song that he wrote, right and all of that.
- 39:17Speaker 2: I think I think Josh is their generations guy, and
- 39:21Speaker 2: I'd love to see it. I do think it's the
- 39:22Speaker 2: most fascinating thing we're living in in a macro. Part
- 39:25Speaker 2: of this NFL JEN is that Lamar and Burrow and
- 39:29Speaker 2: Josh remind me of Ernie Else and Phil Mickelson of
- 39:35Speaker 2: They're like not good, they're exceptional. They're living at a
- 39:39Speaker 2: time when one of the best to ever do it
- 39:41Speaker 2: is in their way, and they've all got to try
- 39:44Speaker 2: to beat Mahomes every single year, and usually they go
- 39:48Speaker 2: over when it matters the most. And Ken Josh get
- 39:51Speaker 2: that one notch this year. That's the most fascinating thing
- 39:54Speaker 2: in the macro to me, that's happening in our NFL
- 39:57Speaker 2: right now.
- 39:57Speaker 1: It's so interesting because it's so easy to do the
- 39:59Speaker 1: NBA thing and we talk about Barkley and Malone and
- 40:02Speaker 1: Ewing and Gary Payton and Sean kemp At. These guys
- 40:05Speaker 1: were all amazing, but it just happened to play in
- 40:07Speaker 1: that era. The golf thing is is something I haven't
- 40:10Speaker 1: thought of yet. I thought, that's a really good analogy.
- 40:14Speaker 1: You go into this game and it's Sunday, and it's
- 40:16Speaker 1: gonna be on Sunday night. Is there a little bit
- 40:19Speaker 1: of pang of jealousy that your voice won't be on
- 40:21Speaker 1: the call for this, for this monster game and it's
- 40:23Speaker 1: gonna be Nanson Romo.
- 40:24Speaker 2: We all want to do a great game, right and
- 40:26Speaker 2: those legacy games, but you know, the wheel spins, we
- 40:29Speaker 2: all get our chance, and especially because you know these
- 40:32Speaker 2: guys know their season ends every year if not a
- 40:34Speaker 2: Super Bowl season with the AFC Championship game with the
- 40:37Speaker 2: NFC Championship game, and you know, and what's the balance.
- 40:40Speaker 2: The balance is Sunday night, we usually get a really
- 40:42Speaker 2: good game. Sometimes those guys will get the short end
- 40:45Speaker 2: of the schedule and have a one o'clock game that's
- 40:47Speaker 2: not as high profile as a primetime game. So it's fine.
- 40:51Speaker 2: It's the thing is that I enjoy is that all
- 40:54Speaker 2: these guys are friends, acquaintances, whatever you want to say.
- 40:58Speaker 2: And I love to watch him and Tony do a game.
- 41:00Speaker 2: Jim spin wonderful and kind to me since I was
- 41:03Speaker 2: in Syracuse in school and Jim was coming and doing
- 41:06Speaker 2: games with Billy Packer and I was working at a
- 41:08Speaker 2: CBS station and I got to meet Jim and interview
- 41:10Speaker 2: him in the late eighties and early nineties. And we're
- 41:13Speaker 2: represented by the same person, Sandy Montag. So Jim's a
- 41:16Speaker 2: thirty year acquaintance and friend, and I've got Tony over
- 41:20Speaker 2: the years, and save same day with Kevin and Tom too.
- 41:24Speaker 2: You know, I'm just excited to hear those guys do
- 41:26Speaker 2: these games. I remember Kevin and I were texting before
- 41:29Speaker 2: the game of Detroit Saturday, and then he texted me
- 41:32Speaker 2: after the game about our game on Sunday. So you
- 41:36Speaker 2: know this, look at we talked about it all the time.
- 41:38Speaker 2: We're all friends who do well. We all swim in
- 41:41Speaker 2: the same water and root for each other. So yeah,
- 41:44Speaker 2: would you love to be there, of course. But then
- 41:46Speaker 2: when it's four o'clock in the afternoon and you're like
- 41:48Speaker 2: the rest of America, you're eating what you want, you're
- 41:50Speaker 2: drinking what you want, you're watching great football, and you're
- 41:53Speaker 2: watching great people call the game. It's all good. We
- 41:56Speaker 2: all get our We all got our swinging at the
- 41:58Speaker 2: pitch every once in a while.
- 42:00Speaker 1: You know how fond I am of your work and
- 42:02Speaker 1: you as a man, obviously, but some of your calls
- 42:04Speaker 1: have been legendary in just the last couple of years alone.
- 42:06Speaker 1: I want to play you a call from last year's
- 42:10Speaker 1: wild Card round. It's the Rams and the Lions, and
- 42:14Speaker 1: the Rams all but wrapped the Lions all but wrap
- 42:16Speaker 1: this thing up, and Chris Collinsworth kind of gave you
- 42:19Speaker 1: the stage to talk a little bit about what this
- 42:21Speaker 1: meant for the city of Detroit.
- 42:22Speaker 2: Take a listen, Mike, you live in this area.
- 42:28Speaker 1: Give me some idea of what this is.
- 42:35Speaker 2: The turner out here, sol, same old Lions. They always
- 42:40Speaker 2: find a way.
- 42:42Speaker 1: To screw it up.
- 42:44Speaker 2: And Dan Campbell change that mentality, change that the people
- 42:48Speaker 2: who brought in they've lost their last nine playoff appearances.
- 42:52Speaker 2: It's a team that believes in themselves and they didn't
- 42:54Speaker 2: have a great second half, but this will be one
- 42:57Speaker 2: of the most memorable nights in Detroit football for that
- 43:02Speaker 2: eighty nine year old and the sixty two thousand others.
- 43:05Speaker 2: Here one morning and business is done and Detroit for
- 43:12Speaker 2: the first time in thirty two years, your Lions have
- 43:17Speaker 2: won a playoff game. How about it?
- 43:22Speaker 1: Mike Herring that back, what's your reaction.
- 43:26Speaker 2: I wasn't expecting Chris to do that, which is why
- 43:28Speaker 2: Christian is the best to work with, because they'll do
- 43:30Speaker 2: things at times that you are unplanned. But also like
- 43:34Speaker 2: that's Christian's moment to kind of say what he should
- 43:37Speaker 2: be saying. But I think he understood that. Having lived
- 43:40Speaker 2: in Michigan for twenty five years, I had a different
- 43:43Speaker 2: read on the fans and the people, and I thought
- 43:47Speaker 2: seeing Kirk herb Street after the championship game on money
- 43:50Speaker 2: and I think it was emotional talking about Ohio State
- 43:52Speaker 2: was a reminder because Scott Vanpelt used the line as
- 43:55Speaker 2: Kirk was getting emotional. Everybody's from somewhere, and I'm not
- 43:58Speaker 2: from here. I grew up a Jets fan right and
- 44:01Speaker 2: moved here twenty five years ago. So I think as
- 44:04Speaker 2: you get older and do this, you have that professional
- 44:07Speaker 2: layer of non emotional attachment. But my family, their Lions fans,
- 44:14Speaker 2: all the people I know. I mean, you go to
- 44:15Speaker 2: the cleaners and drop off your shirts on Monday after
- 44:18Speaker 2: you come home from Sunday, and all people want to
- 44:20Speaker 2: talk about is what about Dan Skipper being eligible and
- 44:24Speaker 2: all that stuff. So what it means to the area
- 44:27Speaker 2: is what I think I've got the connection with, not
- 44:30Speaker 2: just the long suffering fans, but a city that had
- 44:33Speaker 2: been a pinata for some a city that got beat up,
- 44:36Speaker 2: and to see it turn around and parallel with the
- 44:40Speaker 2: success with the Lions and the downtown area coming back.
- 44:44Speaker 2: I just had a really good feel for it and
- 44:46Speaker 2: a read for it. And I was really blessed and
- 44:48Speaker 2: lucky to do both of those games that will be
- 44:51Speaker 2: all time memories for me. Just to be in that
- 44:54Speaker 2: stadium the night the Jared Goff chant began. It was
- 44:57Speaker 2: the night that it was given birth. And just to
- 45:00Speaker 2: be able to help an audience understand it better. And
- 45:03Speaker 2: as Sheila hamp the owner of the Lions, reminded me
- 45:06Speaker 2: when I saw her a couple of weeks ago, the
- 45:08Speaker 2: lines are seven and oh on NBC. When I've done
- 45:12Speaker 2: the games going back to the end of the Aaron
- 45:14Speaker 2: Rodgers in Green Bay era, it's an amazing game. I said,
- 45:17Speaker 2: I've got nothing to do with it. Bub will happily
- 45:19Speaker 2: take the credit for it. That was it.
- 45:20Speaker 1: Ben Johnson calls a hook and lateral and then they
- 45:23Speaker 1: throw a fourth down pass the DJ Shark to eliminate
- 45:27Speaker 1: the Packers. That you were on that call.
- 45:29Speaker 2: And that was a Schrager GMFB trivia question, and I
- 45:33Speaker 2: think that may have been the answer may have been
- 45:35Speaker 2: D because somebody don't know if Jamie brought it up.
- 45:38Speaker 2: Somebody brought up that oftentimes Schrager will just humor you
- 45:42Speaker 2: with choice D, which is now open the door for
- 45:44Speaker 2: Schrager to put the right answer in D. It's you see,
- 45:48Speaker 2: you're a great play caller. If they think they've seen
- 45:51Speaker 2: this ten times, give it to them the opposite way.
- 45:54Speaker 1: I love I love that you watch our show. It
- 45:56Speaker 1: blows me away that anyone watches our show and the
- 45:58Speaker 1: fact you have to recall to do that. I so
- 46:00Speaker 1: appreciate it. Another call was from the year beforehand Lamar
- 46:04Speaker 1: Jackson's not in the play the game because of injury,
- 46:07Speaker 1: so Snoop Huntley is the quarterback. And then Sam Hubbard
- 46:10Speaker 1: makes the play that made Cincinnati a rock and roll concert.
- 46:14Speaker 1: Here's your call from that.
- 46:15Speaker 2: Game with the right round he reaches. They always some
- 46:20Speaker 2: Hubbard the Cincinnati could hundred's.
- 46:23Speaker 1: Gonna come by, chased by Andrews what the thugy the
- 46:28Speaker 1: TNNY well stop.
- 46:34Speaker 2: And Sam Hubbard, who grew up with Bengals fan want
- 46:37Speaker 2: a state championship at Bowler High School Championship in Ohio State,
- 46:43Speaker 2: makes the massive play to take it the other way
- 46:46Speaker 2: and give the Bengals.
- 46:47Speaker 1: The leave Mike your thoughts here in that call back.
- 46:52Speaker 2: Well, so we had Cincinnati in the wild card game
- 46:56Speaker 2: of the year before with Drew Brees, we did the
- 46:59Speaker 2: Cincinnati rad Racers playoff game Bengals on their way to
- 47:03Speaker 2: the Super Bowl. That you who would have thought, right?
- 47:05Speaker 2: And what was in interesting with that was you do
- 47:08Speaker 2: the research for that game and you're in and Dan
- 47:11Speaker 2: Horde is the voice of the Cincinnati Bengals and the
- 47:14Speaker 2: Cincinnati Bearcats. So all SINCEI things that kind of had
- 47:17Speaker 2: a little feel for because I've got one of my
- 47:19Speaker 2: buddies who I went to Syracuse with it was a
- 47:22Speaker 2: part of the Bengals world for the last twenty plus years.
- 47:26Speaker 2: So for some reason during that wild Card game prep,
- 47:29Speaker 2: we were talking about Hubbard and Cincinnati roots and how
- 47:33Speaker 2: rare it is and how much a championship would be
- 47:35Speaker 2: in to a guy who had just been in Ohio
- 47:38Speaker 2: and living in Michigan. You know, the people in Ohio,
- 47:40Speaker 2: it means so much to them to contribute, whether it's
- 47:42Speaker 2: the Buckeys, but also the high school football in Cincinnati.
- 47:46Speaker 2: It's Cincinnati is one of those you're from, where you're
- 47:49Speaker 2: from your high school or the parish that it went
- 47:52Speaker 2: to church, and the Cincinnati thing, you know. So I
- 47:56Speaker 2: had just had in my mind in Cincinnati ties, and
- 48:00Speaker 2: I hadn't written anything down, but that was the first
- 48:02Speaker 2: thing it popped in my mind when he got the ball,
- 48:05Speaker 2: and it just one of those He got the ball
- 48:06Speaker 2: on the right spot that his number was facing me
- 48:09Speaker 2: where I was in the booth, so I could see
- 48:11Speaker 2: right away with him at the fifteen yard line, and
- 48:13Speaker 2: I just popped in my head. I had no plan.
- 48:16Speaker 2: It was on my board Cincinnati Kid or anything like that.
- 48:19Speaker 2: And those are the fun ones when it just pops
- 48:21Speaker 2: in your head and just say what you're thinking and
- 48:23Speaker 2: feeling and prepared for. So it was nice to have
- 48:26Speaker 2: the backstory ingrained in my mind that when it happened
- 48:29Speaker 2: that we had something and it was good that he
- 48:31Speaker 2: ended up scoring on the play made it a lot
- 48:33Speaker 2: of fun.
- 48:33Speaker 1: So good. All right, I'm gonna wrap with a couple
- 48:35Speaker 1: really fun questions that I'm looking for answers that might
- 48:40Speaker 1: not be what you would expect.
- 48:42Speaker 2: Now.
- 48:42Speaker 1: I've always said one of the most entertaining production meetings
- 48:46Speaker 1: I've ever been a part of was for any relevant
- 48:49Speaker 1: Saint Louis Rams game against maybe the Tennessee Titans, and
- 48:54Speaker 1: Greg Williams came in as defensive coordinator under Jeff Fisher
- 48:57Speaker 1: and went on an hour long talk about defense and
- 49:01Speaker 1: the power of crystals, and people ask me, who is
- 49:05Speaker 1: the production meeting guy. I'm like, I don't know where
- 49:08Speaker 1: you're starting where you end, but Greg Williams is on
- 49:10Speaker 1: my list. Is just sit back and sit back and enjoy. Uh,
- 49:13Speaker 1: who's that guy for? You might not have to be
- 49:15Speaker 1: don't have to be Andy Reid, like give me like
- 49:17Speaker 1: that off the radar guy that you just love listening
- 49:20Speaker 1: to talk football.
- 49:21Speaker 2: So the best, the best players were the best production meetings.
- 49:24Speaker 2: I always thought, like, if you asked me, who gave
- 49:26Speaker 2: the best production meetings the elite quarterbacks, especially when it
- 49:30Speaker 2: was Manning and Brady, like you know, Peyton who controls
- 49:32Speaker 2: everything in the line of scrimmage and everything else. I'll
- 49:34Speaker 2: never forget being an ESPN in those days. And gosh,
- 49:37Speaker 2: I'm doing the game with Gruden and maybe Jaws or
- 49:41Speaker 2: just Sushi Colbers, our sideline reporter, and Peyton's telling me
- 49:45Speaker 2: about how a receiver is going to have a role,
- 49:48Speaker 2: and it's somebody who had been on the practice squad, right,
- 49:51Speaker 2: So it's like so and so, so and so, and
- 49:54Speaker 2: we're gonna be I'm gonna be calling We're gonna be
- 49:56Speaker 2: calling up this guy, Mike. He should be make sure
- 49:57Speaker 2: you're ready for him to playing all the year. And
- 50:00Speaker 2: then and then he got and then he kind of goes,
- 50:01Speaker 2: and the guy goes. Johnny's got a really good wiggled
- 50:04Speaker 2: Bob Moos routes really kind of kind of like stokely
- 50:06Speaker 2: on the route running and Susane. He's got a great backstory,
- 50:08Speaker 2: and I'm like, oh my god, this man has just
- 50:11Speaker 2: produced the production meeting by telling all and all three
- 50:13Speaker 2: of those things you got on the air. So that's like,
- 50:16Speaker 2: that's like the Nirvana of production meetings. But I'm gonna
- 50:19Speaker 2: tell you a couple that Sean Payton can give you.
- 50:24Speaker 1: We talk about the flip card for Sean Payton, what
- 50:27Speaker 1: it is because I did enough. Sean Payton comes in
- 50:30Speaker 1: and what a flip card is for the listeners. It's
- 50:32Speaker 1: every player on the roster. And tell him what Sean
- 50:35Speaker 1: Payton will do for I don't know if what the
- 50:37Speaker 1: point is, but he goes position by position and we'll
- 50:41Speaker 1: tell you everything you need to know about each one
- 50:44Speaker 1: of these guys. But go on, Mike, tell him now.
- 50:45Speaker 2: We'll move over to line three and see, I got
- 50:48Speaker 2: this here. Okay, here's what he's gonna do. And Sean
- 50:50Speaker 2: gives you detail on every single player. He kind of
- 50:54Speaker 2: runs the clock out on you. You have no time
- 50:56Speaker 2: to answer ask any questions at some point, but he
- 50:58Speaker 2: gives you all the details. Mike Tomlin is priceless because
- 51:01Speaker 2: Mike gives you not just great great great answers, but
- 51:04Speaker 2: he also gives us such good detail hill along the
- 51:07Speaker 2: way on who's gonna play and why I love like,
- 51:10Speaker 2: you'll get to a guy and go, he's our jet
- 51:12Speaker 2: sweeper guy. He'll run the tricks and all that stuff,
- 51:14Speaker 2: and just it's just Mike Tomlin esque tones and terms.
- 51:19Speaker 2: He goes, he goes through the flip card and does that.
- 51:21Speaker 2: So they're they're all, they're all really good production meetings.
- 51:26Speaker 2: I'm trying to think if there's one.
- 51:27Speaker 1: To kind of the radar guy, give me someone like
- 51:31Speaker 1: I just say Greg Williams, like, you know, Jeff Fishery
- 51:32Speaker 1: has to show up in leather jackets and do.
- 51:34Speaker 2: That right, right right. Dan Campbell is like, you can't
- 51:39Speaker 2: keep him in his seat, he says, he starts rocking.
- 51:42Speaker 2: He starts rocking during the meeting, and he start going
- 51:45Speaker 2: back and forth. Now he's moving around his chair and
- 51:47Speaker 2: he's grabbing his coffee and he's got his dip of
- 51:49Speaker 2: the whole thing. He's he is so on brand uh
- 51:53Speaker 2: for production meetings. But no, the best ones are the
- 51:56Speaker 2: best guys, they really are. So my favorite production meeting
- 52:00Speaker 2: story is Belichick, who notoriously gave you very little right,
- 52:05Speaker 2: and that's in told for years it wasn't bad. When
- 52:09Speaker 2: you got to know Bill, it wasn't bad. You had
- 52:11Speaker 2: to know what you were getting into and what you
- 52:14Speaker 2: were trying to get out of it. So it's Thanksgiving night,
- 52:17Speaker 2: We're doing a game in Minnesota, I want to say,
- 52:22Speaker 2: and the Patriots are playing and we're getting nothing out
- 52:25Speaker 2: of Bill, right, And so Melissa Stark is going to
- 52:28Speaker 2: ask everybody about Thanksgiving because in case somebody wins there
- 52:31Speaker 2: to ducking leg or things like that, you want to
- 52:34Speaker 2: make it a Thanksgiving. It's a family show more than
- 52:36Speaker 2: an et Zo show. So we started asking Belichick, and
- 52:39Speaker 2: Belichick goes into this great detail on Army Navy being
- 52:44Speaker 2: the Saturday after Thanksgiving in Philadelphia and what a Thanksgiving night,
- 52:49Speaker 2: what Thanksgiving Day? Meet you? And he was and of
- 52:51Speaker 2: course his dad coaching at Navy. Well, Thanksgiving was the
- 52:54Speaker 2: last practice. It was the last practice at Navy. And
- 52:57Speaker 2: give us detail about the parade and the train up
- 52:59Speaker 2: to Philadelphia. And he went into like fifty it was
- 53:02Speaker 2: the greatest fifteen minute history lesson on Army Navy played
- 53:06Speaker 2: in Philadelphia for Thanksgiving. Maybe eight seconds of it got
- 53:10Speaker 2: on the air, but he was he was so into
- 53:13Speaker 2: the storytelling part of it and with detail, like I
- 53:17Speaker 2: never really had Thanksgiving dinner, Like Thanksgiving was just the
- 53:20Speaker 2: last day of practice with my dad with Navy because
- 53:22Speaker 2: Friday was the season ended on Saturday with the Army
- 53:25Speaker 2: Navy game, So like that, that's a day I'll just remember,
- 53:28Speaker 2: just sitting there and going, how cool is this? Like
- 53:31Speaker 2: I'm here in the nineteen sixties history of Army Navy
- 53:35Speaker 2: from arguably the greatest football coach of my lifetime, and
- 53:38Speaker 2: I'm getting football education that I will never ever ever lose.
- 53:42Speaker 2: Because Melissa Stark asked about what's your favorite Thanksgiving side?
- 53:46Speaker 2: And that's why those meetings are so informative. You hats
- 53:50Speaker 2: so fun and you build bonds with people along the years.
- 53:53Speaker 2: So you come in and you start talking about all
- 53:55Speaker 2: this random stuff and it's all part of the community
- 53:57Speaker 2: that you know, you live and you love. When we
- 54:01Speaker 2: go to the owner's meetings or the Super Bowl and
- 54:03Speaker 2: that whole community is in one room, it's really pinch
- 54:07Speaker 2: yourself that you are a part of this cool, cool,
- 54:11Speaker 2: cool fraternity.
- 54:12Speaker 1: It's really special. I know you've got a relationship with
- 54:14Speaker 1: Brady as well. He's in his first year obviously, he
- 54:17Speaker 1: and Kevin are the team and the Fox guys have
- 54:19Speaker 1: them locked and loaded. Have you passed any notes along
- 54:23Speaker 1: to Tom? Have you exchanged any notes with Tom? I
- 54:25Speaker 1: know how much he values his friendship with you, Tom.
- 54:27Speaker 2: Tom. Tom's great, Tom. I've reached out. Look. I live
- 54:31Speaker 2: in an Arbert's Michigan, so Brady's connection with Michigan has
- 54:35Speaker 2: always been cool. And we had stories about Lloyd Carr
- 54:39Speaker 2: over the years. Whenever I'd have Tom for a production meeting,
- 54:41Speaker 2: if I saw Coach Carr, who was his coach at Michigan,
- 54:44Speaker 2: we'd share stories about that because Coach Carr had been
- 54:46Speaker 2: in the area and his grandkids know my kids and
- 54:49Speaker 2: all that stuff, and we've gotten to know them. So
- 54:52Speaker 2: that's always been a common connection and built a bond
- 54:54Speaker 2: there over the years. But you know, Tom was great Tom.
- 54:59Speaker 2: I shared here's what I do for a game, Tom,
- 55:02Speaker 2: anything you need, because Tom had been so helpful to
- 55:05Speaker 2: me and to any who did this job all of
- 55:07Speaker 2: his years in the NFL. When you didn't get a
- 55:10Speaker 2: ton of information out of New England. Tom was great
- 55:12Speaker 2: in production meetings and really helped you do your job.
- 55:15Speaker 2: So I always felt the least I could do for
- 55:16Speaker 2: anybody who comes along after, especially if they helped us.
- 55:20Speaker 2: Could I be an olive branch? Is there anything I
- 55:21Speaker 2: can help you with? Answer a question from the side
- 55:24Speaker 2: that I do this on and Tom. I shared a
- 55:27Speaker 2: couple of things with Tom. Not much. He's done his
- 55:29Speaker 2: own thing. He figured out from typical Tom Brady or
- 55:33Speaker 2: outwork and everybody getting the most information how to go
- 55:37Speaker 2: about it. And he'll go about it and probably adjust
- 55:40Speaker 2: it as he goes through this year and on into
- 55:41Speaker 2: next year. But I've trained to test with him a
- 55:44Speaker 2: fut times. I've enjoyed listening to him, I really have.
- 55:46Speaker 2: I've enjoyed listening to his view on things. I love
- 55:49Speaker 2: his grades of throws right away because if Tom Brady
- 55:53Speaker 2: says it to Nay plus star, it's an A plus throw.
- 55:55Speaker 1: You're not gonna question it, not at all.
- 55:57Speaker 2: So I've enjoyed that. And you know, one thing that
- 56:01Speaker 2: happens with all of us, we'll get in these weird sequences.
- 56:06Speaker 2: I'll go three weeks in a row where I follow
- 56:09Speaker 2: I an Eagle and Charles Davis for Chris, and I
- 56:11Speaker 2: will file watching your game so far right for the
- 56:15Speaker 2: people wh don't know, like Monday and Tuesday One of
- 56:17Speaker 2: the first things we do is go back and watch
- 56:20Speaker 2: the entire game broadcast from the last week. At least
- 56:22Speaker 2: that I do, just because you want to hear themes,
- 56:25Speaker 2: you want to watch the game storylines. You don't want
- 56:28Speaker 2: to repeat the same attecdote because you know the fan
- 56:31Speaker 2: who's watching the Panthers every week. Okay, dude, I've heard
- 56:34Speaker 2: this three times in a row. I don't need to
- 56:36Speaker 2: hear it again. So if you do repeat it, say hey,
- 56:39Speaker 2: a lot of you are familiar with the story of
- 56:41Speaker 2: for those who are, and just to acknowledge the fact that, Okay,
- 56:44Speaker 2: here's the story, I'm gonna tell it again. So for
- 56:47Speaker 2: whatever reason, I think we have three weeks in a
- 56:48Speaker 2: row where we followed Kevin and Tom with our game
- 56:52Speaker 2: the following week, and I got to listen every weekend.
- 56:54Speaker 2: This sent Tom a text and I so enjoyed listening
- 56:56Speaker 2: to him called the Minnesota Green Bay game because we
- 56:58Speaker 2: had Minnesota Detroit the next week. It's it's fun. Our
- 57:02Speaker 2: business has become so criticized because tick up Twitter, I
- 57:07Speaker 2: hate why did you say this? You said it was second,
- 57:09Speaker 2: that was third. Yeah, that's right, that's fine. That's part
- 57:13Speaker 2: of life. We get it. But what I do respect
- 57:16Speaker 2: a lot, Peter, and you know it because you're around
- 57:18Speaker 2: it and you're a nerd of it a little bit.
- 57:20Speaker 2: I don't think our job has ever been done at
- 57:23Speaker 2: a higher level by more people. Like every game you
- 57:26Speaker 2: watch is really really well done. Like I learned stuff
- 57:29Speaker 2: with Mark Sanchez and Adam Amin are doing a game.
- 57:33Speaker 2: You know, like, oh man, that's really good. I never
- 57:35Speaker 2: thought of that. And we're all constantly listening to each
- 57:37Speaker 2: other and rooting for each other. It's the fun part
- 57:40Speaker 2: of doing this that I never imagined would be the case,
- 57:42Speaker 2: and maybe wasn't the case twenty five thirty years ago.
- 57:45Speaker 2: But whether it's we've all come up through the same
- 57:48Speaker 2: series of places, or we've interacted, or there are more
- 57:51Speaker 2: jobs than ever doing this, I love. I love the
- 57:55Speaker 2: fraternity of play by play analyst reporters that we all are.
- 58:00Speaker 2: And you know, you've become friends with people like Charles Davis,
- 58:04Speaker 2: like Laura Oakman, I and Eagle and I know each
- 58:06Speaker 2: other for thirty five years. So that's what this joy is.
- 58:09Speaker 2: And the fact that nobody has any property like the NFL,
- 58:14Speaker 2: the people watching these numbers. You just am very appreciative
- 58:18Speaker 2: of what you do and that you get a chance
- 58:19Speaker 2: to do it on a regular basis.
- 58:20Speaker 1: There's a cool parallel. I talked to Cliff Kingsbury, the
- 58:23Speaker 1: offensive coordinator of the Commanders, this week, and I said,
- 58:26Speaker 1: third and five, you're throwing the ball to John Bates
- 58:29Speaker 1: with the season on the line, he goes, he goes.
- 58:32Speaker 1: McVeigh called that same play with Jordan Whittington earlier this
- 58:37Speaker 1: season when they played the Cardinals. It's a full back
- 58:39Speaker 1: corner route and I saw it and I said, oh gosh,
- 58:41Speaker 1: you put the full back in there and then you
- 58:44Speaker 1: have him run a corner. He's like, He's like, and
- 58:45Speaker 1: I'm like, you're okay with me saying that on air.
- 58:47Speaker 1: He's like, dude, it was a great play call.
- 58:50Speaker 2: We used it.
- 58:50Speaker 1: It was, of course, But that's the same thing with us.
- 58:53Speaker 1: It's like if Dan Orlowsky or Kevin Clark or Ryan
- 58:58Speaker 1: Clark makes a good comment, like I'm not so insecure
- 59:00Speaker 1: to not say, oh no, I'm gonna take this from
- 59:02Speaker 1: that comment because that was a really good point.
- 59:04Speaker 2: And give the person credit who's says it when they
- 59:07Speaker 2: say it, and do what they do. Look, people aren't
- 59:10Speaker 2: sitting there with a scorecard they're sitting there enjoying it.
- 59:12Speaker 2: I always remind young broadcasters what we do, and Gruden
- 59:16Speaker 2: helped me understand this a lot. What we do is entertainment,
- 59:19Speaker 2: and lead courso too when I got to work with
- 59:21Speaker 2: the lead back in the nineties. What we do is entertainment.
- 59:24Speaker 2: It is very important business. It is your team, it's
- 59:27Speaker 2: your fantasy team, it's your daily wager, right, it's your parlay.
- 59:34Speaker 2: Trying to make sure that your running back gets ten
- 59:36Speaker 2: yards in each quarter. Whatever it is. You are being
- 59:40Speaker 2: at some level entertained. And we're responsible for some of
- 59:43Speaker 2: that entertainment. So we got to do that on a
- 59:45Speaker 2: regular basis. And to understand that that we are all
- 59:49Speaker 2: collectively doing this is pretty fun.
- 1:00:00Speaker 1: Okay, my last question to you, because Gus, it's two pieces.
- 1:00:04Speaker 1: It goes back to your years at the Worldwide Leader.
- 1:00:06Speaker 1: But I think of icons, I think of people that
- 1:00:09Speaker 1: you've worked with. Give me your best John Gruden's story.
- 1:00:12Speaker 2: Oh my god, Okay, sure it. It may not be
- 1:00:17Speaker 2: the best, but it's my favorite. It's when we go
- 1:00:20Speaker 2: to Philadelphia and the Eagles are not practicing on Saturday
- 1:00:25Speaker 2: for a Monday night game, Friday for a Sunday game.
- 1:00:28Speaker 2: But they're doing like this spa day is quote unquote right.
- 1:00:31Speaker 2: It's like massage, get your body right, and then be outside.
- 1:00:35Speaker 2: And now Chip Kelly's come in and now they have
- 1:00:38Speaker 2: these protein shakes. So every day somebody gets a shake,
- 1:00:42Speaker 2: and it's based on what your body needs. So the
- 1:00:45Speaker 2: Schrager shake may be different in week eight than it
- 1:00:48Speaker 2: wasn't week fourteen because you've had a cold, you had
- 1:00:50Speaker 2: an injury, there's something right. So this constant analysis is
- 1:00:53Speaker 2: telling you this is what you need, so you get
- 1:00:55Speaker 2: somebody's making shakes. So Gruden goes, hey, can we get
- 1:00:59Speaker 2: a blender? Can we get a blender in the booth?
- 1:01:02Speaker 2: I'm like, it's very similar to the feeling I had
- 1:01:04Speaker 2: when I was sitting on the set with Marfa Stewart
- 1:01:07Speaker 2: and Snoop dogging what the hell I'm doing? I'm just
- 1:01:09Speaker 2: want called third and five, And like, now my man's
- 1:01:12Speaker 2: bringing a blender to the booth. And it's a meme
- 1:01:14Speaker 2: that shows up every once in a while out there.
- 1:01:16Speaker 2: We're in the booth, we're in Philly and John the
- 1:01:19Speaker 2: Eagles go up like by seventeen points and John goes, hey,
- 1:01:22Speaker 2: we should did a blender bit now and it was
- 1:01:24Speaker 2: still it was telling a story, but it was in
- 1:01:27Speaker 2: an entertaining way. And so John brings the blenderings thrown
- 1:01:30Speaker 2: bananas and strawberries in this blender. He's just being the
- 1:01:33Speaker 2: mad scientist. And it just reminded me that every great
- 1:01:38Speaker 2: coach and a teacher. Yep. And that was just John's
- 1:01:42Speaker 2: way of giving you an unforgettable moment to say, you
- 1:01:45Speaker 2: know what, this coach is doing something very different. I
- 1:01:47Speaker 2: could have done the story. Hey, no, John, Each guy
- 1:01:50Speaker 2: gets his own protein shake on Saturday, and they're just
- 1:01:52Speaker 2: trying to make sure that they're chemically balanced properly, and
- 1:01:55Speaker 2: blah blah blah sports science and no, but he did
- 1:01:58Speaker 2: it with a blender, and it's still in my head
- 1:02:01Speaker 2: fourteen years later. Whatever the heck it is, that to
- 1:02:04Speaker 2: me was one of a thousand examples of John being
- 1:02:06Speaker 2: as good a teacher as I've ever been around.
- 1:02:09Speaker 1: I'm gonna ask you one more, and I'm gonna preface
- 1:02:11Speaker 1: it with my story, which is so limited. I've never
- 1:02:14Speaker 1: worked with this guy. I'm in the Arizona Airport, delayed
- 1:02:18Speaker 1: for a flight Monday morning after the Super Bowl, after
- 1:02:22Speaker 1: the Patriots beat the Seahawks on the Malcolm Butler play, yeah, okay.
- 1:02:26Speaker 1: Delayed flight back to LaGuardia delayed four hours. Sitting at
- 1:02:30Speaker 1: the gate, No fancy lounge, I'm sitting there. I'm a nobody.
- 1:02:33Speaker 1: No one cares. This larger than life presence wearing a
- 1:02:37Speaker 1: giant what I would describe as a sun hat or
- 1:02:40Speaker 1: a sombrero, comes rumbling down oh Way with people asking
- 1:02:45Speaker 1: for photos and autographs, and then he leans this huge
- 1:02:48Speaker 1: six foot five, two hundred something pound body, leans right
- 1:02:53Speaker 1: into my shoulder and just says, you got the modern
- 1:02:56Speaker 1: day Earl Campbell in the backfield and you're throwing the ball.
- 1:03:01Speaker 2: To lock it.
- 1:03:04Speaker 1: What it was and it was Chris Berman over my shoulder.
- 1:03:10Speaker 1: And I'm like that, and give me your best Chris
- 1:03:15Speaker 1: Berman story.
- 1:03:16Speaker 2: Yeah, I think it's good. There are so many. First off,
- 1:03:21Speaker 2: my favorite one was he's doing West Coast Baseball Wednesday
- 1:03:26Speaker 2: nights on ESPN when ESPND double headers on Wednesday Friday
- 1:03:29Speaker 2: and then Sunday Night baseball, and I'm breaking in doing
- 1:03:32Speaker 2: sports Eights nineteen ninety one, probably August maybe, and the
- 1:03:37Speaker 2: Mariners bullpen was stunningly bad on Wednesday nights in ninety
- 1:03:41Speaker 2: one and ninety two. I can't tell you how many
- 1:03:43Speaker 2: nights we sat on the set and the Mariners gave
- 1:03:46Speaker 2: up three in the eighth and five four in the
- 1:03:48Speaker 2: ninth to send it to X gratings two eight in
- 1:03:51Speaker 2: the morning. Right, So I'm sitting on the set and
- 1:03:54Speaker 2: after those double headers, it wasn't at eleven o'clock or two.
- 1:03:57Speaker 2: A sports at the time you do one show at
- 1:03:58Speaker 2: one thirty, and so sometimes it we won from the
- 1:04:01Speaker 2: eleven one from the two. So I did that show
- 1:04:03Speaker 2: with Bob Lee. That's the middle of summer. Everybody off, Yeah,
- 1:04:07Speaker 2: and I was like, maybe the first or second JO
- 1:04:09Speaker 2: I'm doing with Bob and Boomer's out there doing the game.
- 1:04:12Speaker 2: May have been with Jerry Royce made his House and
- 1:04:15Speaker 2: Bob was Sports's next Bob Lee. Mike Turrico, Mike, welcome, Bob,
- 1:04:20Speaker 2: you're breaking in another one. Here, here's the next one.
- 1:04:26Speaker 2: Here's the next one. So then fast forward a few
- 1:04:28Speaker 2: years later in the studio with Chris and doing a show,
- 1:04:31Speaker 2: and I got to work as like the second host,
- 1:04:34Speaker 2: the sub host on NFL Countdown, I think it was
- 1:04:38Speaker 2: back then whatever the shows were called. His nickname is
- 1:04:42Speaker 2: Boomer for a reason. He's the loudest individual ever, he's
- 1:04:46Speaker 2: so loud in such a presence, but it was like
- 1:04:49Speaker 2: walking around with when we travel together, it was like
- 1:04:52Speaker 2: being with Elvis. There's a true story about Bill's Super
- 1:04:55Speaker 2: Bowl at the Rosewawn, Pasadena. We did the pregame show
- 1:04:59Speaker 2: and then we're going out. We're in a car. Russell
- 1:05:01Speaker 2: Baxter was our research guy, Tom Jackson, Boomer, myself. I
- 1:05:05Speaker 2: think maybe that may be the whole car. Maybe one
- 1:05:08Speaker 2: other person get a flat on the side of the highway.
- 1:05:11Speaker 2: And there we are on the side of the road
- 1:05:13Speaker 2: with Boomer and Tom Jackson. We're waiting for somebody to
- 1:05:16Speaker 2: fix the fly here right with Chris Berman and Boomer. Well,
- 1:05:21Speaker 2: the way it happens with the Bills gotta circle the wagons, right,
- 1:05:26Speaker 2: we got the flat fis We got there. The Cowboys
- 1:05:29Speaker 2: had an incredible late second quarter. Boomer was disconsolate. He
- 1:05:33Speaker 2: just wanted to see the Bills win once. So sure,
- 1:05:35Speaker 2: maybe this will be Maybe this will be the year
- 1:05:37Speaker 2: that the Bills win.
- 1:05:39Speaker 1: Maybeeah, maybe it is. And we'll think of Boomer and
- 1:05:41Speaker 1: we'll think of all the different times he predicted the
- 1:05:43Speaker 1: Bills and the forty nine ers in a Super Bowl.
- 1:05:45Speaker 2: It might not be there it'll be so, he says,
- 1:05:48Speaker 2: for the tenth year, it'll be the Niners and the
- 1:05:50Speaker 2: Bills in the Super Bowl. You can count on it.
- 1:05:53Speaker 1: Beautiful, Mike Tarico, we went way over the time I
- 1:05:56Speaker 1: asked you to give us. That was awesome.
- 1:05:59Speaker 2: Thank you so, like our regular text exchanges, they want
- 1:06:02Speaker 2: to see the Super Bowl power somewhere down the line
- 1:06:04Speaker 2: here and thanks for all the MFB mornings. You you
- 1:06:08Speaker 2: and that team just just crush it. And like the
- 1:06:11Speaker 2: thing you did on Tuesday in the vein of Mark Andrews,
- 1:06:16Speaker 2: of the guys who had great careers at playoff moments,
- 1:06:19Speaker 2: that was like, that's like vintage Schrager. That's somefing appreciating
- 1:06:22Speaker 2: that like people don't do right now. I'm like Trey Junkin,
- 1:06:27Speaker 2: I forgot about that and it was just really cool.
- 1:06:32Speaker 2: The history of football is so great and you do.
- 1:06:33Speaker 1: My God, there's a place for it. And I say
- 1:06:36Speaker 1: it to a mad Dog. I do Mad Dog Russo Show,
- 1:06:38Speaker 1: and I'm like, I think there's a very small group
- 1:06:40Speaker 1: of us left to care to actually use the platform
- 1:06:43Speaker 1: to do it, but you're one of them. I think
- 1:06:45Speaker 1: the history of football still matters.
- 1:06:46Speaker 2: But Peter, it does because it mattered to us, like
- 1:06:49Speaker 2: to hear the stories in the greatest game ever played
- 1:06:51Speaker 2: in nineteen fifty eight. Fifty eight is later, thirty years
- 1:06:54Speaker 2: later for me to talk to people who are Bill
- 1:06:58Speaker 2: Curry to talk to me Curry about that, right, sure,
- 1:07:01Speaker 2: like those things, those things last with me forever and
- 1:07:05Speaker 2: now as I involved, didn't playoff football and historic stuff.
- 1:07:09Speaker 2: As I get older and hopefully you know this generation
- 1:07:11Speaker 2: as the technology and baby, we'll go back and look
- 1:07:13Speaker 2: at it and see clips. But to keep it alive,
- 1:07:16Speaker 2: to keep it fresh in people's minds is one of
- 1:07:18Speaker 2: the many awesome things you do. So thanks for all right, dude,
- 1:07:22Speaker 2: thank you right back at your season and there you
- 1:07:29Speaker 2: have it.
- 1:07:30Speaker 1: Uh, that's the Mike Turrico experience. I love that guy.
- 1:07:33Speaker 1: We've had the honor or. I've had the honor to
- 1:07:36Speaker 1: work a couple of games with him for NFL Network.
- 1:07:38Speaker 1: We did a Chargers Ravens game in Carson City on
- 1:07:42Speaker 1: a Saturday night. It was me and him and Kurtwrner them.
- 1:07:44Speaker 1: The next year we did Bills versus Patriots in a
- 1:07:48Speaker 1: big game that the Patriots beat the Bills and said
- 1:07:51Speaker 1: not yet, it's not your time yet. With Brady as
- 1:07:54Speaker 1: the quarterback one of his last great wins, and and
- 1:07:58Speaker 1: it was Tariko, Warner and I and those were those
- 1:08:00Speaker 1: really fun Saturday night NFL Network games down the Stretchman
- 1:08:04Speaker 1: we used to work together. Those games have now been
- 1:08:06Speaker 1: given to the NFL Network people in house. Eisen does
- 1:08:10Speaker 1: them with Warner and my colleague Jamie and it's great.
- 1:08:12Speaker 1: But like that, that's where I really connected with Tariko,
- 1:08:14Speaker 1: and he watches our show, and obviously I watch everything
- 1:08:17Speaker 1: he does. But Aaron, just listening to Mike talk, like
- 1:08:20Speaker 1: you could tell why you know, sometimes the good guys,
- 1:08:24Speaker 1: it's there's a reason they have so much success, and
- 1:08:26Speaker 1: it's not just the skill and the work, but also
- 1:08:29Speaker 1: it's cool to hang it's cool to hang with and
- 1:08:31Speaker 1: it's cool to get to know.
- 1:08:32Speaker 3: Seemed like a genuinely great guy. And having heard him
- 1:08:35Speaker 3: on the broadcast so often, it was it was the
- 1:08:39Speaker 3: same guy, and it made me think he like appreciate
- 1:08:42Speaker 3: what he does on broadcast even more too. He just
- 1:08:44Speaker 3: seems so nice.
- 1:08:45Speaker 2: Yeah, he was.
- 1:08:47Speaker 1: His season's done, but ours is still going, and so
- 1:08:50Speaker 1: is our folks who work at Uber Eats because we're
- 1:08:54Speaker 1: represented by Uber Eats, and it is time for delivering
- 1:08:56Speaker 1: results presented by those fine, fine individuals. I'm gonna discuss
- 1:09:00Speaker 1: a team or player that delivered from this past week's games,
- 1:09:04Speaker 1: and I have nowhere else to go than to Dan Quinn,
- 1:09:08Speaker 1: the head coach of the Washington Commanders. He delivered. This
- 1:09:13Speaker 1: was against a Lions team that not only was the
- 1:09:15Speaker 1: number one seed in the NFC playoffs, but they were
- 1:09:18Speaker 1: the home field team and the heavy favorites nearly double digits.
- 1:09:21Speaker 1: And incomes a Washington Commander's team that had four wins
- 1:09:25Speaker 1: last year, and they go in there and they upset
- 1:09:28Speaker 1: Detroit in Detroit. Dan Quinn's team brought it on offense, defense,
- 1:09:32Speaker 1: and on special teams. They find a way to win
- 1:09:34Speaker 1: an advance. Dan Quinn, like we said, the last coach
- 1:09:37Speaker 1: hired in last year's coaching cycle, and yet one of
- 1:09:40Speaker 1: the four last coaches remaining in this year's NFL season.
- 1:09:45Speaker 1: Dan Quinn now heads to Philadelphia with his Washington Commanders
- 1:09:49Speaker 1: for the third time. They play Philadelphia in what will
- 1:09:53Speaker 1: be an awesome NFC Championship game on Fox. Dan Quinn
- 1:09:57Speaker 1: delivering results presented by Uber Eats, where you can get
- 1:09:59Speaker 1: the best deals on game day food all season long.
- 1:10:03Speaker 1: The official on demand delivery partner of the NFL. Go
