- 0:07Speaker 1: We welcome you to Tuesday here. A Tuesday on Sports
- 0:12Speaker 1: Radio AM 1300 The Zone and where you can always
- 0:16Speaker 1: listen to us on the iHeartRadio app. Good afternoon, everybody.
- 0:20Speaker 1: My name is Craig White. Glad to have you with us.
- 0:23Speaker 1: The producer is Jake Herman, who is alongside. Hope your
- 0:27Speaker 1: Tuesday's off to a good start. I know this is
- 0:29Speaker 1: a difficult commute day. Like I said, I said this
- 0:31Speaker 1: a couple of weeks ago, I might have moved off
- 0:33Speaker 1: of My philosophy that Tuesday is the worst commute day
- 0:37Speaker 1: of the week. It might be Thursday now as folks
- 0:39Speaker 1: start to head toward the weekend. But still, you know,
- 0:44Speaker 1: to quote Steve Spurrier, not too good. Not too good,
- 0:49Speaker 1: you know, when you're trying to commute.
- 0:52Speaker 2: Maybe we need that as a drop for the show.
- 0:55Speaker 3: Not very good. Yeah.
- 0:58Speaker 1: So anyway, but we're glad that we're glad to be
- 1:01Speaker 1: here today. And it's a busy Tuesday. There's a lot
- 1:05Speaker 1: to get to on the program today. Coming up here
- 1:07Speaker 1: in just a few minutes, I'm going to bring some
- 1:09Speaker 1: more Sark sounds, some more.
- 1:14Speaker 3: Audio from Longhorn's head football coach, Steve Sarkisian. We'll do that.
- 1:18Speaker 1: There were some things we didn't get to yesterday and
- 1:21Speaker 1: some important pieces of audio.
- 1:22Speaker 3: We'll play that. We'll also hear from Arch Manning.
- 1:25Speaker 1: And we'll hear from him. But also coming up this
- 1:30Speaker 1: afternoon in the 2 o'clock hour, of course, we'll have Inconceivable,
- 1:35Speaker 1: which has a sporting slant, a food slant. It's got
- 1:39Speaker 1: a little bit of all of that. So that's Inconceivable
- 1:41Speaker 1: coming up later this hour. 3 o'clock hour, our weekly
- 1:45Speaker 1: conversation with Greg Tepper, the editor-in-chief of Dave Campbell's Texas
- 1:48Speaker 1: Football Magazine to talk college and high school football. across
- 1:52Speaker 1: the Lone Star State. We'll get his feedback on the
- 1:55Speaker 1: weekend of football and not just as it pertained to
- 1:58Speaker 1: the Texas Longhorns, but the other teams in the league.
- 2:01Speaker 1: So we'll get his thoughts on that and then talk
- 2:03Speaker 1: some high school football with him as well. In the
- 2:07Speaker 1: four o'clock hour, the Longhorns are playing, as we know, UTSA,
- 2:13Speaker 1: the University of Texas San Antonio, UTSA on Saturday night
- 2:17Speaker 1: at DKR Texas Memorial Stadium. Jeff Traylor is the head
- 2:21Speaker 1: coach of the UTSA Roadrunners. Jeff Traylor, who was a
- 2:25Speaker 1: fabulous high school coach out of East Texas and Gilbert,
- 2:28Speaker 1: multiple state championships, that sort of thing, then was actually
- 2:32Speaker 1: on Charlie Strong's staff in Texas briefly. And, uh, then
- 2:36Speaker 1: was up at Arkansas and then ultimately got the head
- 2:39Speaker 1: coaching job, his first collegiate head coaching job at UTSA.
- 2:43Speaker 1: And he's done a tremendous job there. He will join
- 2:45Speaker 1: us in the four o'clock hour. We'll visit with coach
- 2:48Speaker 1: trailer and get his thoughts on his teams to a
- 2:51Speaker 1: no start and this matchup with Texas.
- 2:54Speaker 3: So we'll, we'll have all of that as always.
- 2:57Speaker 1: We are happy to welcome your thoughts, your questions, your comments, um,
- 3:03Speaker 1: you need only text the program. You can text the
- 3:06Speaker 1: program by texting the word Texas, followed by your question
- 3:09Speaker 1: or comment to 81530. So you text the word Texas,
- 3:13Speaker 1: it can be all caps or just a capital T,
- 3:16Speaker 1: however you want to do it. Text the word Texas,
- 3:18Speaker 1: followed by your question or comment to 81530. Standard messaging
- 3:23Speaker 1: and data rates may apply. You can also reach us
- 3:26Speaker 1: via the talkback microphone, actually have your voice heard on
- 3:29Speaker 1: the air, as long as it's clean.
- 3:32Speaker 3: Not objectionable, obscene, anything like that.
- 3:35Speaker 1: But to do that, you have to make sure you
- 3:37Speaker 1: have the iHeartRadio app downloaded on your smartphone, be it
- 3:42Speaker 1: the iPhone or Android, whatever. You just download the app,
- 3:45Speaker 1: real easy to do, and it's free, doesn't cost anything.
- 3:48Speaker 1: And then in your search bar, search window, you search
- 3:52Speaker 1: AM 13 under the zone, and it'll pop straight up.
- 3:55Speaker 1: And when it does... Then you'll see two buttons. One's
- 3:59Speaker 1: a little white triangular button. You press that if you
- 4:01Speaker 1: just want to listen to what's going on in the air.
- 4:03Speaker 1: There's a red button with a little white microphone on it.
- 4:06Speaker 1: That's the TalkBack mic. You tap that button, you can
- 4:10Speaker 1: leave us a voice message up to 30 seconds. So
- 4:12Speaker 1: whatever's on your mind, if you want to talk about,
- 4:14Speaker 1: feel free to do that. So glad to have you
- 4:17Speaker 1: with us today on the program and glad to have
- 4:20Speaker 1: your feedback. as well. Um, so let me start off.
- 4:25Speaker 1: There's a couple of college football things that I do
- 4:27Speaker 1: want to get to. So, but, but I want to
- 4:30Speaker 1: start off with, um, what we would hear from, uh,
- 4:36Speaker 1: Longhorn's head coach, Steve Sarkeesian. So I want to make
- 4:39Speaker 1: sure that we, uh, get to, this was again, some,
- 4:43Speaker 1: some pieces of sound we didn't get a chance to
- 4:45Speaker 1: get to yesterday, uh, because of, um, you know, what, well,
- 4:51Speaker 1: first of all, we were kind of replaying the news conference,
- 4:57Speaker 1: because we bring you the news conference live every Monday.
- 5:01Speaker 1: And so that, we bring you the news conference live
- 5:05Speaker 1: every Monday on the program. And that's part of our
- 5:09Speaker 1: Longhorn Monday programming. And we start at 11 a.m. from
- 5:16Speaker 1: the UT campus, and then we bring you SARC's news
- 5:19Speaker 1: conference live in its entirety and heard, you know, with
- 5:23Speaker 1: the questions and everything like that afterwards. When we come
- 5:26Speaker 1: back and bring you the program this afternoon, you know,
- 5:28Speaker 1: on Monday afternoons, we realize that some folks can't listen
- 5:31Speaker 1: live at the time on the app or over our
- 5:36Speaker 1: regular terrestrial AM 1300 radio signal for whatever reason, business appointments, lunch,
- 5:42Speaker 1: whatever it is. So we bring you his responses from
- 5:49Speaker 1: the news conference. And we just kind of set it
- 5:51Speaker 1: up and tell you what the question was. So that's
- 5:54Speaker 1: what we were doing yesterday. But we didn't have a
- 5:56Speaker 1: chance to get to all of them because of other
- 6:00Speaker 1: things that were going on. So there were a few
- 6:02Speaker 1: responses left that I wanted to get to. First of all,
- 6:05Speaker 1: and these are kind of important we're talking about. When
- 6:11Speaker 1: you play a team like Ohio State, and even if
- 6:15Speaker 1: you're not playing a major team, division one college football
- 6:21Speaker 1: powerhouse like ohio state is they're one of the dynastic
- 6:25Speaker 1: programs in college football no question about they've won seven
- 6:27Speaker 1: national titles you know they they won a national championship
- 6:30Speaker 1: a couple years ago and of course they'd had scoreboard
- 6:33Speaker 1: on texas uh the last two times i mean going
- 6:36Speaker 1: into the game last saturday night the series only stood
- 6:39Speaker 1: 3-2 favor of the buckeyes because they'd not met until
- 6:44Speaker 1: 2005 the texas national championship season longhorns won that You know,
- 6:48Speaker 1: that memorable matchup up in Columbus, 25-22. Ohio State returned
- 6:54Speaker 1: the favor down in Austin the next year and won
- 6:58Speaker 1: 24-7 en route to winning the national title. Then they
- 7:02Speaker 1: met in the January 2009 Fiesta Bowl following the 2008 seasons,
- 7:08Speaker 1: and Texas won that heart-stopping finish. Colt McCoy to Kwon Cosby,
- 7:13Speaker 1: game-winning touchdown pass with seconds to go. They won that
- 7:17Speaker 1: one by a score of 24 to 21. And so
- 7:19Speaker 1: Texas actually had a 2-1 lead until they started up
- 7:23Speaker 1: the series. But before they started the series, they met
- 7:28Speaker 1: in the semifinals of the college football playoff going on
- 7:31Speaker 1: two years ago, 16 months ago. And it was in
- 7:35Speaker 1: the Cotton Bowl and Ohio State won that one, 28-14.
- 7:38Speaker 1: And then they started the season last year in Columbus
- 7:41Speaker 1: and Ohio State won that 14-7. So Ohio State had
- 7:43Speaker 1: a 3-2 lead in the series. And Texas was able
- 7:47Speaker 1: to square that and maybe answer some questions in some
- 7:50Speaker 1: folks' minds about, you know, whatever did Texas have. I
- 7:54Speaker 1: heard this mentioned a lot last week, an Ohio State problem,
- 7:57Speaker 1: a Georgia problem, you know, because since they've been in
- 8:01Speaker 1: the same league with Georgia, they haven't beat them. They
- 8:02Speaker 1: beat them in the Sugar Bowl when Tom Herman was
- 8:04Speaker 1: coaching following the 2018 season, but have not beaten Georgia yet.
- 8:10Speaker 1: in two regular season meetings and in the SEC championship game,
- 8:14Speaker 1: which went overtime, but they lost all three of those meetings.
- 8:16Speaker 1: So somewhere down the road, perhaps they'll have that opportunity
- 8:21Speaker 1: to square that up and get things flipped around. But
- 8:25Speaker 1: in describing those games, what folks have taken the call
- 8:30Speaker 1: on is talking about tough, physical, bruising brand of football.
- 8:36Speaker 1: And were the Longhorns strong enough to, to be able
- 8:39Speaker 1: to make that happen. That included being strong in the
- 8:43Speaker 1: running game. And so Sark was asked about, you know,
- 8:46Speaker 1: being very run heavy in their practice periods. Remember they had,
- 8:51Speaker 1: I think he mentioned they had like 16 consecutive carries
- 8:54Speaker 1: or something like that, that they did.
- 8:55Speaker 3: They were just running, running, running, running the ball.
- 8:58Speaker 1: To make them tough in terms of getting the push
- 9:01Speaker 1: from the offensive line and getting production out of the
- 9:03Speaker 1: running backs. By the same token, on the defensive side,
- 9:06Speaker 1: since we're talking about practice, having Will Muschamp's defense get
- 9:10Speaker 1: accustomed to that, to the physical brand of that. So
- 9:13Speaker 1: Sark was asked, did he see that those kind of
- 9:17Speaker 1: run-heavy practices paid dividends for his team?
- 9:21Speaker 4: I say it a lot in here, too. You guys
- 9:22Speaker 4: have heard me. I always say, as a coach... you
- 9:25Speaker 4: get what you emphasize, right? And we've been emphasizing being
- 9:30Speaker 4: a more physical football team, being a more physical offensive
- 9:33Speaker 4: team and running the football when they know you're gonna
- 9:36Speaker 4: run the football and having the ability to do that
- 9:39Speaker 4: and having the ability to have confidence to call it
- 9:41Speaker 4: that way. And so, you know, like at the end
- 9:44Speaker 4: of that game, you know, when we were down there
- 9:47Speaker 4: first and goal, it was like, we're running it, man.
- 9:49Speaker 5: And they knew we were running it. There wasn't a secret.
- 9:52Speaker 4: We weren't going to call a bootleg or a tight
- 9:54Speaker 4: end corner out or something. And so the ability to
- 9:56Speaker 4: get that ball on the end zone is gratifying as
- 9:59Speaker 4: a coach. that your players have bought into to, you know,
- 10:03Speaker 4: what you're asking of them to get accomplished. But there
- 10:06Speaker 4: was more than that. You talk about get what you emphasize.
- 10:08Speaker 4: We had two penalties for 12 yards Saturday night. And
- 10:11Speaker 4: we've been in these games before when it's been eight
- 10:13Speaker 4: penalties for 98 yards, right? And the impact that those
- 10:17Speaker 4: penalties can have. And so I was proud of our
- 10:19Speaker 4: team for that, too, that we're playing a more disciplined
- 10:21Speaker 4: brand of football right now. And so that was encouraging
- 10:25Speaker 4: as well.
- 10:25Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 10:26Speaker 1: So it was important to have that discipline, tough, physical
- 10:29Speaker 1: brand of football. He was asked about some of his
- 10:33Speaker 1: former players making NFL debuts and some like Michael Tav
- 10:37Speaker 1: coming up with an interception in a ballgame and some
- 10:40Speaker 1: other guys as well.
- 10:42Speaker 4: And as far as our guys go, I mean, shoot,
- 10:45Speaker 4: Manny Muhammad gets a pick. Michael Taft gets a pick.
- 10:48Speaker 4: Ant Hill has 16 tackles. I mean, that's just to
- 10:51Speaker 4: name a few right off the top. And so that
- 10:55Speaker 4: part's gratifying as well, that we're developing our players to
- 10:58Speaker 4: fulfill their dreams of playing in the NFL, not just
- 11:01Speaker 4: making it, but playing and playing at a high level.
- 11:04Speaker 4: And so that obviously was very encouraging and excited for
- 11:08Speaker 4: those guys that they were able to accomplish all that.
- 11:10Speaker 3: And there was one more piece of sound.
- 11:12Speaker 1: Now, we played this as part of yesterday's show, but
- 11:15Speaker 1: I feel compelled to bring it to you again because
- 11:20Speaker 1: it's really taken on a bit of a national life.
- 11:24Speaker 1: And it's talking about the issue of non-conference scheduling. And,
- 11:32Speaker 1: you know, and sark has stood up right from the
- 11:35Speaker 1: start and said we want to play these type of
- 11:36Speaker 1: tough non-conference games and we should be rewarded for that
- 11:39Speaker 1: win or lose you shouldn't take a hit on that
- 11:42Speaker 1: and he felt the same way about ohio state so
- 11:43Speaker 1: you'll hear that in the in the bite the the
- 11:45Speaker 1: point i'm making about this is that uh it's become
- 11:48Speaker 1: a national thing colin cowherd was playing it i was
- 11:51Speaker 1: on uh as a guest on sec network radio this
- 11:54Speaker 1: morning uh with peter burns uh and chris during uh
- 11:59Speaker 1: during and daring and um They played it as well,
- 12:05Speaker 1: and I saw it on SportsCenter. So it's become a
- 12:10Speaker 1: really important part of the... this week coming off of
- 12:16Speaker 1: that game, these matchups, these huge matchups in non-conference play
- 12:21Speaker 1: and what their place is in college football with the
- 12:24Speaker 1: possibility of the playoff expanding to 24 teams. ESPN's in
- 12:29Speaker 1: that negotiating window right now where they get 30 exclusive
- 12:32Speaker 1: days to negotiate in the event that the playoff gets expanded.
- 12:35Speaker 1: The mere fact that the window was open to them
- 12:38Speaker 1: has most folks speculating that the playoff is probably going
- 12:42Speaker 1: to expand. Now, Greg Sankey yesterday wouldn't quite go there.
- 12:47Speaker 1: He said it's not a foregone conclusion, but it is
- 12:50Speaker 1: the next step in the process, that exclusive negotiating period.
- 12:54Speaker 1: So Sark was asked about this, balancing the schedule in
- 12:59Speaker 1: a nine-game conference schedule in a rough and tumble-grueling league
- 13:04Speaker 1: like the SEC and the Big Ten has to deal
- 13:06Speaker 1: with it. In fact, all the powerful conferences have their
- 13:08Speaker 1: issues with it. Certainly the Big 12 and the ACC,
- 13:12Speaker 1: but there seems to be more and more of a
- 13:17Speaker 1: concerted effort to make sure you're scheduling beyond just your
- 13:21Speaker 1: conference opponents to have more equity in terms of who
- 13:26Speaker 1: you're playing. And Sarton made a point about that when
- 13:29Speaker 1: talking about how this matchup should be viewed in the
- 13:33Speaker 1: prism now in the rearview mirror.
- 13:35Speaker 4: I think that's a really good question because, you know,
- 13:38Speaker 4: the brand is the brand. you know, and surely, There's
- 13:42Speaker 4: a lot of teams that would want to play us
- 13:44Speaker 4: in the event, right, in those games. And obviously television
- 13:48Speaker 4: loves to have the brand on television and the viewership
- 13:52Speaker 4: and all the things. And we've got a locker room
- 13:55Speaker 4: full of players that come here to be part of
- 13:57Speaker 4: those types of games. And we've got a fan base
- 13:59Speaker 4: that loves to watch us compete at the highest level
- 14:03Speaker 4: in those games.
- 14:04Speaker 5: I've said this all along.
- 14:05Speaker 4: We want to play in those games. There's so much
- 14:09Speaker 4: about those games that matter. for a lot of reasons
- 14:13Speaker 4: to be part of those games competitively the balance is
- 14:20Speaker 4: when you take in humans and and they they're the
- 14:25Speaker 4: ones that dictate who makes the playoffs like we're not
- 14:28Speaker 4: the nfl where it's all based on what's your record
- 14:31Speaker 4: who did you beat those are the teams that make
- 14:33Speaker 4: it you make the playoffs based off of opinions of
- 14:36Speaker 4: others essentially right outside unless you win your conference and
- 14:39Speaker 4: so There's a fine line in that as what is
- 14:41Speaker 4: the impact of that and what are the metrics that
- 14:44Speaker 4: they're using to determine who makes the playoffs. And so
- 14:49Speaker 4: that's the risk reward. You know, I hope Ohio State
- 14:52Speaker 4: does not get punished for that game Saturday night.
- 14:56Speaker 5: They played a heck of a game.
- 14:57Speaker 3: I mean, it's 24-23.
- 14:58Speaker 4: They lose a scorn with 25 seconds to go in
- 14:59Speaker 4: the game that I hope If they end up being
- 15:07Speaker 4: a 9-3 team, the committee can appreciate the fact that
- 15:09Speaker 4: they came to Austin, Texas in September when it was
- 15:13Speaker 4: 100 degrees and played us in that environment and played
- 15:17Speaker 4: a heck of a game.
- 15:18Speaker 5: And so they should not be punished.
- 15:20Speaker 4: Quite frankly, Ohio State should be rewarded for playing in
- 15:22Speaker 4: this game against us. And so that's my goal. Time
- 15:26Speaker 4: will tell. And this isn't crying over spilled milk. I
- 15:31Speaker 4: don't think we got rewarded for going to Columbus last
- 15:34Speaker 4: year in week one. Hopefully this year they reward Ohio
- 15:37Speaker 4: State for coming and playing in this game with us
- 15:39Speaker 4: this year.
- 15:41Speaker 5: I don't know how their season goes. They may go 11-1.
- 15:43Speaker 5: It's a moot point.
- 15:44Speaker 4: But if they are 9-3, and depending on what happens
- 15:47Speaker 4: to those other two, surely I hope they get rewarded
- 15:50Speaker 4: for playing this game and not. Because if they don't
- 15:52Speaker 4: reward them for playing in the game... then all of
- 15:55Speaker 4: us start playing FCS power six. And then I don't
- 16:00Speaker 4: think that's the product that we want in college football.
- 16:02Speaker 5: You guys love it. We love it.
- 16:04Speaker 4: Our fans love it. The players love it. The players,
- 16:07Speaker 4: everybody loves those matchups. Well, if we want to continue
- 16:10Speaker 4: with those matchups, we got to reward the teams for playing.
- 16:12Speaker 3: In those games.
- 16:13Speaker 6: All right.
- 16:14Speaker 1: Uh, so there's some from Sark. We're going to hear
- 16:16Speaker 1: from some more from Sark later. Um, uh, Coming up,
- 16:22Speaker 1: and by the way, let me just put a PS
- 16:24Speaker 1: on this because I know folks have their opinions on
- 16:28Speaker 1: this whole thing about where Texas was last year with
- 16:31Speaker 1: the college football playoff. You heard Sark say he didn't
- 16:37Speaker 1: feel that they were rewarded enough for having played the
- 16:39Speaker 1: game in Columbus a year ago. You've heard Sark saying,
- 16:45Speaker 1: if we didn't play that game, if we played somebody else,
- 16:49Speaker 1: we could have gotten into the college football playoff, all
- 16:53Speaker 1: of which is true. The counter-argument to that, and believe me,
- 16:57Speaker 1: I heard it at nauseam as well, is, well, if
- 16:59Speaker 1: you hadn't lost to Florida, you wouldn't be having this conversation.
- 17:03Speaker 3: That's true.
- 17:05Speaker 1: What is also true is if they hadn't played Ohio
- 17:07Speaker 1: State and played somebody else, kind of like how Indiana
- 17:11Speaker 1: and Notre Dame did with some of their scheduling, They
- 17:15Speaker 1: probably would have won that 10th game. They would have
- 17:17Speaker 1: been 10-2, and then we wouldn't be having the conversation.
- 17:20Speaker 1: In other words, both things can be true, both, including
- 17:25Speaker 1: if they hadn't lost to Florida, they'd be 10-2 and
- 17:27Speaker 1: they'd have gotten in. If they hadn't played Ohio State
- 17:29Speaker 1: and played a G6 team and won it, they'd be
- 17:34Speaker 1: 10-2 and they would have gotten in. That's the plain
- 17:37Speaker 1: and simple truth. So now you move forward with this.
- 17:41Speaker 1: Texas wins a big game like that. Obviously, it might be,
- 17:45Speaker 1: as Ryan Day was saying last week, a big data point.
- 17:48Speaker 3: Might be.
- 17:49Speaker 6: We'll see.
- 17:50Speaker 3: We'll see how both teams do from here on out.
- 17:53Speaker 1: Sarg's point was that Ohio State should not get a
- 17:56Speaker 1: big smackdown for having played that game in Austin, having
- 18:01Speaker 1: led for.
- 18:03Speaker 1: You know nearly all of it nearly 59 minutes of
- 18:06Speaker 1: the game and uh i guess counting the field goal
- 18:09Speaker 1: early was like two and a half minutes in the
- 18:10Speaker 1: game something like that so 57 minutes of the game
- 18:12Speaker 1: um before falling to texas on their home field and
- 18:17Speaker 1: he he doesn't think that they should have a negative
- 18:20Speaker 1: blowback because of it so anyway just wanted to wanted
- 18:24Speaker 1: to put that out there Coming up, we're going to
- 18:27Speaker 1: hear from Arch Manning. Also an update on something involving
- 18:30Speaker 1: Arch over the weekend. So we'll, you know, let his
- 18:35Speaker 1: words set the record straight on this. And Holly Rose
- 18:40Speaker 1: as well. So we'll do that. We've got a lot
- 18:42Speaker 1: coming up right here on Sports Radio AM 13 Under
- 18:45Speaker 1: the Zone and the iHeartRadio app.
- 18:47Speaker 5: It's worth all the years in the past.
- 18:51Speaker 7: No one will not die.
- 18:55Speaker 1: In addition to everything else, it is a Texan Tuesday
- 18:59Speaker 1: where our return cuts are reflected by that. Included in,
- 19:05Speaker 1: not necessarily limited to, but always inclusive of, these three
- 19:11Speaker 1: all-world Texas artists. In the 4 o'clock hour, we'll hear
- 19:15Speaker 1: from the king, George Strait. In the 3 o'clock hour,
- 19:18Speaker 1: from the iconic Willie Nelson. And here in the 2
- 19:20Speaker 1: o'clock hour, as we lead it off with the immortal...
- 19:25Speaker 1: Stevie Ray Vaughan.
- 19:27Speaker 2: Some things never change on Texan Tuesdays. One of those
- 19:30Speaker 2: is Stevie, like you said, this cut called Change It.
- 19:35Speaker 1: Why not? Before we get to hearing from Arch Manning,
- 19:42Speaker 1: Jake and I were talking during the break and we
- 19:44Speaker 1: were talking to Major League Baseball and later this week
- 19:46Speaker 1: we'll visit with Gene Watson because we're getting down to
- 19:48Speaker 1: just like a dozen game left at most for teams.
- 19:52Speaker 3: Some have fewer than that.
- 19:53Speaker 1: Most teams have 11 or 12 games left, and there
- 19:57Speaker 1: is still a great deal that has yet to be settled,
- 20:00Speaker 1: mainly in the wild card races, although the American League
- 20:05Speaker 1: West race up for grabs. And again, both the Astros
- 20:09Speaker 1: and Rangers hovering right around the 500 mark.
- 20:13Speaker 3: Again, giving some credence to.
- 20:18Speaker 1: My speculation that there was a very real chance that
- 20:22Speaker 1: the American League West Division winner will have a sub-500 record.
- 20:26Speaker 2: Well, it's all a game of tug of war. Every
- 20:30Speaker 2: time somebody gets a chance to run away with this thing,
- 20:33Speaker 2: like the Astros who opened up that three-game lead They
- 20:37Speaker 2: lose three in a row and now their lead is
- 20:39Speaker 2: down to one game. And just when that opens up
- 20:43Speaker 2: the chance for a team like Seattle to maybe claw
- 20:45Speaker 2: their way back into it, they lose in Anaheim. Kate
- 20:49Speaker 2: Anderson didn't have it last night and the Mariners, it
- 20:52Speaker 2: is all but gone for them.
- 20:54Speaker 1: You know, one of the most dehumanizing things that can
- 20:58Speaker 1: happen to a baseball team is a baseball team. And
- 21:03Speaker 1: you could, You could apply this in the NBA. You
- 21:06Speaker 1: could apply it in the NFL. But it really, because
- 21:08Speaker 1: there's more games in baseball, this seems to pop up
- 21:10Speaker 1: more often, or at least you hear about it more often.
- 21:13Speaker 1: One of the more dehumanizing things that can happen to
- 21:15Speaker 1: a ball club is to be in the thick of
- 21:18Speaker 1: the fight or trying to stay in the thick of
- 21:20Speaker 1: the fight for a playoff spot, a division title, whatever,
- 21:24Speaker 1: and they don't perform well and lose to a team
- 21:27Speaker 1: that is playing spoiler, has nothing to lose, and has
- 21:30Speaker 1: long since out of the race.
- 21:32Speaker 2: Padres avoided that last night. Close win over Colorado.
- 21:35Speaker 1: Yeah, they had to come back. And the Diamondbacks did
- 21:39Speaker 1: as well against the Marlins. They needed a Corbin Carroll
- 21:42Speaker 1: walk-off home run in the bottom line. I happened to
- 21:44Speaker 1: catch it live when it happened off of that. But anyway,
- 21:47Speaker 1: what we were talking about, we were talking about different things.
- 21:51Speaker 1: You said you saw Tristan Peters, what, 16 pitch at bat?
- 21:54Speaker 3: 16 pitch at bat.
- 21:56Speaker 2: In a tie ball game in the sixth inning, Guardians-White Sox,
- 22:01Speaker 2: Peters does that, driving Gavin Williams' pitch count from 90
- 22:06Speaker 2: to 106. So all of a sudden, you get the
- 22:08Speaker 2: Guardians ace out of the game. It turned into his
- 22:10Speaker 2: last hitter. Peters gets on base. Then he takes a
- 22:14Speaker 2: smart angle around the base pass, turning what might have
- 22:17Speaker 2: been a double play ground ball into an error because
- 22:20Speaker 2: he didn't give Nathaniel Lowe a good throwing lane. All
- 22:23Speaker 2: of a sudden, it turns into a six spot in
- 22:25Speaker 2: the inning for the White Sox. They get a win,
- 22:28Speaker 2: and that's huge for them in the American League Central race.
- 22:32Speaker 3: Yeah, they're up, what, a game and a half?
- 22:33Speaker 2: Game and a half.
- 22:34Speaker 1: On the Guardians. So that thing is going to go
- 22:36Speaker 1: to the wire. So there's two division races that'll go
- 22:38Speaker 1: to the wire. I think the Rays are closing in
- 22:40Speaker 1: on finishing things in the East. The Braves still have
- 22:44Speaker 1: not locked it up. The Phillies kind of hanging around there.
- 22:49Speaker 1: The Brewers probably will clinch tonight or tomorrow, something like that.
- 22:52Speaker 1: And the Dodgers' magic number for wrapping up the National
- 22:55Speaker 1: League West is three. The reason it got to three,
- 23:00Speaker 1: Linda and I went out to grab a bite.
- 23:01Speaker 3: To eat last night.
- 23:02Speaker 1: And then we came back and we watched the Manning cast,
- 23:05Speaker 1: which we did, and we were highly entertained.
- 23:07Speaker 3: There was some great stuff.
- 23:09Speaker 1: Eli brought big-time game last night, embarrassing Peyton.
- 23:14Speaker 2: Did he really?
- 23:15Speaker 1: Oh, just stats and highlights of Peyton getting sacked four
- 23:20Speaker 1: times by the Ravens when Mike McDonald, the Seahawks coach,
- 23:24Speaker 1: who was one of their guests, was... on the defensive
- 23:28Speaker 1: coaching staff for John Harbaugh in Baltimore.
- 23:30Speaker 3: And they showed just Manning just getting crunched.
- 23:33Speaker 1: So there was a lot of that.
- 23:36Speaker 3: And then.
- 23:39Speaker 1: They did a thing where Eli was comparing Mike McDonald
- 23:43Speaker 1: to Michael McDonald.
- 23:44Speaker 3: And so they had a slide.
- 23:45Speaker 2: That's right up your alley.
- 23:46Speaker 3: So there's Michael McDonald.
- 23:47Speaker 1: And so he asks him, did people ever confuse you?
- 23:51Speaker 1: And are you a fan of Yacht Rock? To which
- 23:54Speaker 1: Mike McDonald said, I don't think anybody ever confused me.
- 23:57Speaker 1: But he goes, I have to admit, I am a
- 23:59Speaker 1: fan of Yacht Rock.
- 24:00Speaker 3: So he said that.
- 24:01Speaker 1: And then Eli just launches into taking it to the
- 24:07Speaker 1: streets by saying, you don't know me, but I'm your brother.
- 24:13Speaker 1: And he says, Peyton used to say that to me
- 24:14Speaker 1: when I was a kid because he's a fan of
- 24:15Speaker 1: the Doobie Brothers.
- 24:16Speaker 3: And Peyton goes, I'm so embarrassed.
- 24:17Speaker 1: This thing has just completely gone off the rails. But
- 24:22Speaker 1: that's the kind of entertainment that is, especially when the
- 24:24Speaker 1: game had gone off the rails by then.
- 24:26Speaker 2: Man, I wonder if Eli should start sending Arch those
- 24:28Speaker 2: voice memos that he's talking about.
- 24:30Speaker 3: Yeah, right.
- 24:30Speaker 2: He says, I get them from Peyton all the time,
- 24:32Speaker 2: and they're long, and I ask for, you know, 10 minutes,
- 24:35Speaker 2: or I.
- 24:35Speaker 1: Ask for one minute, and I get 10. Well, yeah,
- 24:39Speaker 1: and we're going to hear from Eli coming up a
- 24:41Speaker 1: little later.
- 24:41Speaker 3: From Arch, you mean, right? I'm sorry. We're going to
- 24:43Speaker 3: hear from Arch. But here's where I was getting to.
- 24:45Speaker 1: When we got back to the house, and we did
- 24:47Speaker 1: watch that, but we were also catching the end of
- 24:49Speaker 1: the Dodgers-Reds game. And the Dodgers have a 4-0 lead
- 24:52Speaker 1: going into the ninth.
- 24:53Speaker 3: Scooball.
- 24:54Speaker 1: Scooball was great. Best performance yet in the Dodgers. The
- 24:58Speaker 1: last three outings have been better, better, better.
- 25:00Speaker 2: Scary good.
- 25:01Speaker 1: Yeah. So he was really good. Seven shutout innings. Then
- 25:05Speaker 1: they got a shutout eighth out of Alex Vessia. So
- 25:08Speaker 1: they go to the ninth, and Evan Phillips is pitching.
- 25:16Speaker 1: And so I think there's one out in the ninth.
- 25:20Speaker 1: and L.A. De La Cruz comes up. And if you
- 25:22Speaker 1: don't know about L.A. De La Cruz, you really need
- 25:24Speaker 1: to check it out. This guy is a superstar in
- 25:26Speaker 1: the making. He's got all the tools, all the gifts.
- 25:29Speaker 1: He's amazing. Here's the other thing. He has homered in
- 25:32Speaker 1: every game against the Dodgers this year. The games out
- 25:34Speaker 1: in L.A. did all three. Dodgers won all three, but
- 25:36Speaker 1: he homered in the ninth. So he comes to the
- 25:39Speaker 1: plate in the ninth, 0-3 for the ninth as defensively,
- 25:44Speaker 1: Scooball just dominated him, struck him out twice, once looking,
- 25:48Speaker 1: once swinging. He got him to ground out another time.
- 25:51Speaker 1: So he's out for three and he comes to the plate.
- 25:53Speaker 1: And there were actually two outs in the ninth. So,
- 26:00Speaker 1: you know, he's at the plate and Evan Phillips is
- 26:03Speaker 1: working and he's kind of working carefully and it gets
- 26:05Speaker 1: to three balls and two strikes. And I just said aloud,
- 26:10Speaker 1: sitting there watching it with Linda, I said, Evan, like
- 26:14Speaker 1: he can hear me, of course, Evan, just throw him
- 26:17Speaker 1: a fastball. If he hits it into the Ohio River,
- 26:20Speaker 1: you're still up three runs. Phillips throws him a fastball,
- 26:26Speaker 1: and he came very close to hitting it into the
- 26:28Speaker 1: Ohio River. It sailed out of the ballpark. It was
- 26:31Speaker 1: well over 450 feet. It was amazing. It was a
- 26:35Speaker 1: monstrous shot. Dodgers won the game 4-1. The reason why
- 26:39Speaker 1: I say this now is we get ready to go
- 26:40Speaker 1: to break. It brings up topic that's going to be
- 26:44Speaker 1: part of inconceivable oh okay all right so that's coming
- 26:47Speaker 1: up now.
- 26:48Speaker 2: What did he did he sign with the dodgers already
- 26:50Speaker 2: no no but it's all deferred and he's like a
- 26:53Speaker 2: one million dollars next year yeah.
- 26:55Speaker 1: Linda's like i have hope he's going to be a
- 26:57Speaker 1: dodger when they were like settle down okay don't worry
- 27:00Speaker 1: about that right now hey.
- 27:02Speaker 2: That's realistic yeah yeah they're signing.
- 27:04Speaker 1: Everybody yeah we'll see all right but anyway uh what
- 27:09Speaker 1: he did last night is part of inconceivable. Not the
- 27:12Speaker 1: blast itself, except the tail end of it. It brings
- 27:15Speaker 1: to mind something else that you may not know about
- 27:20Speaker 1: the state where that was hit. We'll get to that
- 27:22Speaker 1: coming up here on 13 Under the Zone. Second hour
- 27:39Speaker 1: of the program here on Sports Radio AM 1300 The Zone.
- 27:44Speaker 3: Craig Way alongside.
- 27:46Speaker 1: The producer, Jay Kerman. With you all the way up
- 27:51Speaker 1: until 5 o'clock this afternoon. Reminder, coming up in a
- 27:55Speaker 1: few minutes, we'll talk football with Greg Tepper, Editor-in-Chief, Dave
- 28:00Speaker 1: Campbell's Texas Football Magazine.
- 28:02Speaker 3: That's coming up in a few minutes.
- 28:03Speaker 1: And the 4 o'clock hour head coach of the UTSA Roadrunners,
- 28:06Speaker 1: Jeff Traylor, will join us. So we'll look forward to
- 28:09Speaker 1: bringing you that conversation as well. There were a couple
- 28:12Speaker 1: of things to get to from Longhorn's head coach, Steve Sarkisian,
- 28:16Speaker 1: and then a couple of things from Arch Manning. One
- 28:19Speaker 1: from Sark yesterday was asked about the vibe that he
- 28:24Speaker 1: was getting from his players. What was he seeing, hearing,
- 28:29Speaker 1: and feeling from his players as they began to mount
- 28:31Speaker 1: the comeback?
- 28:32Speaker 5: I think there was a real sense of poise and composure.
- 28:35Speaker 4: I felt like the demeanor of our guys was, we're
- 28:39Speaker 4: gonna come back. We just need to continue to do
- 28:42Speaker 4: the things the right way. And a lot of things
- 28:44Speaker 4: had to line up. If we don't get two, three
- 28:47Speaker 4: and outs, that's another... three minutes off the clock that
- 28:51Speaker 4: impacts how the end of that game goes. So it
- 28:54Speaker 4: was us playing complimentary football. You could feel each side
- 28:57Speaker 4: working with each other of wanting to get off the field.
- 29:00Speaker 4: The offense knew the value of a third down stop.
- 29:02Speaker 3: Here we go.
- 29:03Speaker 5: We got now it's nine minutes to go. We're getting
- 29:05Speaker 5: the ball. We still need two scores.
- 29:07Speaker 4: And so, you know, the defense realizing, Hey, We just
- 29:11Speaker 4: scored to cut it to a six-point game. Holding them,
- 29:15Speaker 4: not being able to get points is critical. And so
- 29:17Speaker 4: when they got into field goal range, you could feel
- 29:20Speaker 4: the aggressiveness of Coach Muschamp calling it, Bo Masco making
- 29:24Speaker 4: the play on the fade. And then you could feel
- 29:26Speaker 4: the rush on field goal block to try to affect
- 29:29Speaker 4: that kick, knowing then they make that kick. It's a
- 29:31Speaker 4: nine-point game. Now we need two scores again. And so
- 29:34Speaker 4: you could just look at the excitement by our players
- 29:37Speaker 4: on defense when he misses the kick. I mean, Juice Cryer,
- 29:40Speaker 4: is so excited he knows Now it's a one-score game.
- 29:43Speaker 4: Our offense can go down and win the game. So
- 29:45Speaker 4: I think through it all, I thought there was great
- 29:47Speaker 4: clarity by our team, poise and composure, but yet the
- 29:51Speaker 4: execution that it took in working and playing complementary football, offense, defense,
- 29:55Speaker 4: and special teams all working together.
- 29:57Speaker 1: Which then engendered the question that you knew had to
- 30:00Speaker 1: be coming and everybody could have a chuckle about it.
- 30:02Speaker 3: Was there a moment? What moment was it where he
- 30:04Speaker 3: felt like they were definitely going to win?
- 30:06Speaker 4: When Grayson was laying on the ground with the ball,
- 30:09Speaker 4: you know, I mean. shoot, they threw it up and
- 30:11Speaker 4: the ball's bouncing around. I'm thinking, man, they got an
- 30:13Speaker 4: alien on the other side. If he catches it, we lose.
- 30:16Speaker 4: I mean, it can happen. So I don't ever feel
- 30:21Speaker 4: like that. I just feel like, man, if we can
- 30:23Speaker 4: just execute, we will get back in the game. And
- 30:26Speaker 4: if we get back in the game, we have a chance,
- 30:29Speaker 4: you know, and these games have been very similar. It's
- 30:32Speaker 4: just three times in a row against these guys and
- 30:34Speaker 4: they're really good. I mean, Two years ago in the semifinals,
- 30:39Speaker 4: we have the ball inside the 10-yard line to tie
- 30:42Speaker 4: the game. Last year, we get stopped twice inside the 10.
- 30:46Speaker 4: We still have the ball with two minutes to go
- 30:48Speaker 4: to go drive again down 14 to 7. We didn't
- 30:51Speaker 4: quite execute the way we needed to in those moments
- 30:54Speaker 4: to make it happen. I felt like this year, we
- 30:57Speaker 4: were executing up until that point to be like, if
- 30:59Speaker 4: we can just get one more shot, we're going to
- 31:02Speaker 4: go down and score and we're going to win this game.
- 31:03Speaker 4: And I felt like the guys did do that. There
- 31:05Speaker 4: was great execution. I mean, a couple of the passes
- 31:08Speaker 4: to Emmett on that last drive that the curl route
- 31:11Speaker 4: he catches over the middle, the slant route he catches
- 31:14Speaker 4: in the low red to get down to the one,
- 31:16Speaker 4: like the execution was at a high level in those moments.
- 31:19Speaker 4: And so, um, I just felt like if we could
- 31:22Speaker 4: just have enough time that, that we would have a
- 31:25Speaker 4: chance to go do it. And, but I, Hey, I didn't,
- 31:27Speaker 4: I didn't feel good until like the game was like
- 31:30Speaker 4: the clock was at zero. I mean, I was watching
- 31:32Speaker 4: it tick down and I'm like, please hit zero, you know,
- 31:34Speaker 4: because I just know they're really good. Like, Ohio State's
- 31:37Speaker 4: a really good team. They weren't number one in the
- 31:39Speaker 4: country on accident. They're a very good team.
- 31:41Speaker 1: Yeah, okay. And then one final thing from Sartre. I
- 31:45Speaker 1: was asked what he learned, if there was anything. And
- 31:47Speaker 1: I'm not a real big fan, I'm going to tell
- 31:49Speaker 1: you this. I have never asked this question of a coach,
- 31:55Speaker 1: even a coach I've worked with an awful lot. I've
- 31:58Speaker 1: never asked the question, what did you learn about your team?
- 32:02Speaker 1: Because the coach has been with them months and months
- 32:05Speaker 1: and months. Yeah, you still learn some things about your team. But,
- 32:10Speaker 1: you know, it almost makes it sound like you didn't
- 32:13Speaker 1: know anything about it. What did you learn about it?
- 32:16Speaker 1: That sort of thing.
- 32:17Speaker 2: I'm guilty of that sometimes with high school coaches. I've
- 32:19Speaker 2: started going, what did they show you?
- 32:22Speaker 1: That's good, too. And I will say this, too. You
- 32:26Speaker 1: can make an exception on this. When you have newer
- 32:28Speaker 1: players in your system, And even though Hollywood Smothers and
- 32:32Speaker 1: Raleigh Brown have been around for a few months, still,
- 32:35Speaker 1: he hadn't seen them, you know, really have to respond
- 32:38Speaker 1: in a game crisis situation. So he was asked what
- 32:40Speaker 1: new things he might have learned about those two.
- 32:43Speaker 5: They're both really tough.
- 32:45Speaker 4: Hollywood Smothers and Raleigh Brown are really tough and they
- 32:48Speaker 4: love football. That is what I've learned about these guys. Like,
- 32:54Speaker 4: They are in the moment. They're engaged. They're picking other
- 32:57Speaker 4: guys up. They're talking to the offensive line. They run
- 33:00Speaker 4: the football with passion. They blocked. They were competing at
- 33:06Speaker 4: a really high level Saturday night. And that's something you
- 33:09Speaker 4: don't know until you actually get into the fire with them.
- 33:11Speaker 4: And I've learned that about zero and two for sure.
- 33:14Speaker 4: Those guys are great competitors.
- 33:17Speaker 6: All right.
- 33:18Speaker 1: I want to move on to Arch Manning here before
- 33:19Speaker 1: we get a break, and then we'll visit with Greg Tepper.
- 33:22Speaker 1: No doubt by now you've heard all about the things
- 33:26Speaker 1: that happened with the attempts by ESPN to interview Sark
- 33:32Speaker 1: both at halftime and at the game's conclusion. The halftime
- 33:35Speaker 1: thing was just kind of a combination of meltdown stuff
- 33:39Speaker 1: from the ESPN side. They took a long while when
- 33:43Speaker 1: Holly Rowe was interviewing Ryan Day, get that set up
- 33:46Speaker 1: and the director get it out to him there and
- 33:48Speaker 1: they did that. Uh, then they were going to Laura
- 33:51Speaker 1: Rutledge who was with Sark, but the problem was after
- 33:55Speaker 1: he was waiting two, three, almost four minutes, the, they
- 33:59Speaker 1: had a camera malfunction. And so Sark finally said to,
- 34:03Speaker 1: to a Laura Rutledge, I got to go. And she
- 34:04Speaker 1: gets to understand, go ahead. And he takes off. And
- 34:07Speaker 1: then she mentions later that's on us, not on him.
- 34:10Speaker 1: He waited patiently. That was all in the statement. It
- 34:13Speaker 1: was in the tweet, all that sort of stuff. She
- 34:14Speaker 1: said it on live television. When the game ended, Holly
- 34:19Speaker 1: Rowe went over to talk to Sark. And again, the
- 34:23Speaker 1: waiting game was underway while Chris Fowler and Kirk Herbstreit
- 34:26Speaker 1: were finishing the recap of it. So he wanted to
- 34:32Speaker 1: celebrate with the team. And when they got it down
- 34:33Speaker 1: to him, he said, that's Texas fight.
- 34:35Speaker 3: Hook him. And he ran off.
- 34:38Speaker 1: And you can tell Holly wasn't real happy about it,
- 34:40Speaker 1: you know, in the shot. And so a lot has
- 34:41Speaker 1: been said and posted, you know, should Sark have run off?
- 34:46Speaker 1: You know, is it an entitlement thing of the networks
- 34:49Speaker 1: to have those deals? And probably both wish that it
- 34:53Speaker 1: could have gone a little more smoothly. Arch Manning wishes
- 34:57Speaker 1: what happened yesterday could have gone smoothly in his press conference.
- 35:00Speaker 1: And we'll hear some of his press conference things from
- 35:04Speaker 1: yesterday where he's talking about the game and on Saturday
- 35:07Speaker 1: night and all that kind of stuff.
- 35:08Speaker 3: But he was also asked, was it Evan V that
- 35:10Speaker 3: asked him?
- 35:11Speaker 7: Yes.
- 35:11Speaker 3: Okay.
- 35:13Speaker 1: And he's with?
- 35:14Speaker 2: Inside Texas.
- 35:15Speaker 3: Inside Texas. So Evan asked him if he'd watched.
- 35:17Speaker 1: Any of those AI fan edited clips of, and he said,
- 35:24Speaker 1: I've seen a few AI edits of stuff, but that's
- 35:27Speaker 1: about it. I saw an AI edit of Sark's interview,
- 35:30Speaker 1: and he started chuckling. He goes, have y'all seen that one?
- 35:32Speaker 1: It's a good one of him slapping Holly Roe.
- 35:34Speaker 3: It's hilarious. Now, Sark never... Obviously slapped her.
- 35:39Speaker 1: There was an AI creation of him, you know, whatever,
- 35:41Speaker 1: slapping her and then running off and, you know, doing
- 35:43Speaker 1: all this kind of stuff.
- 35:45Speaker 3: And I saw another one.
- 35:47Speaker 1: I saw another one where it was AI generated where
- 35:50Speaker 1: Sark was supposedly flipping off the camera with a cigar
- 35:52Speaker 1: in his mouth. They got that from the fact there
- 35:54Speaker 1: was a cigar in the post-game press conference there.
- 35:58Speaker 3: So a lot of people did a lot of stuff.
- 36:00Speaker 1: That's what AI can do and give that impression. Well,
- 36:04Speaker 1: Manning saw it and he laughed about it. And all
- 36:07Speaker 1: the reporters were laughing. I had left before Arch came in.
- 36:14Speaker 3: I had to get back here and get ready for
- 36:15Speaker 3: the show.
- 36:17Speaker 1: But understanding that room and knowing, I'm guessing the reporters
- 36:20Speaker 1: were laughing as much because it was a real kind
- 36:25Speaker 1: of unusual bit of emotion and lighthearted stuff from Arch,
- 36:34Speaker 1: who's usually pretty businesslike. So it made them laugh and
- 36:37Speaker 1: Arch was laughing at the deal. However, however, to laugh
- 36:41Speaker 1: at that was definitely going to make a lot of
- 36:44Speaker 1: people unhappy. And, you know, about making light of violence
- 36:49Speaker 1: toward women, even though it wasn't true, it was all
- 36:52Speaker 1: AI generated and so on and so forth. And there
- 36:54Speaker 1: were a lot of people that were defending him on that,
- 36:55Speaker 1: saying like, he's laughing at a meme, come on. But
- 36:59Speaker 1: there were enough people who probably, you know, many who
- 37:02Speaker 1: took offense at it. Arch giving this thought, on all
- 37:06Speaker 1: of this, decided to issue an apology for it today.
- 37:08Speaker 1: And here was the apology. Quote, he said, in my
- 37:13Speaker 1: press conference yesterday, I made an insensitive comment about an
- 37:16Speaker 1: AI video. There's nothing funny about it. It's easy to
- 37:20Speaker 1: say I didn't mean it, but I know my words
- 37:21Speaker 1: and actions were hurtful to a lot of people. I
- 37:23Speaker 1: do not take that lightly and I'm deeply sorry for that.
- 37:26Speaker 1: I specifically want to apologize to Holly Rowe for what
- 37:30Speaker 1: she has personally had to deal with because of my comments.
- 37:33Speaker 1: I have a ton of respect for her, and appreciate
- 37:35Speaker 1: her showing me grace in this moment. I need to
- 37:38Speaker 1: do better, and I'll be more thoughtful going forward. Holly
- 37:43Speaker 1: then replied on X on Twitter, and she said they
- 37:48Speaker 1: discussed it. She said, thank you, Arch. I appreciate our
- 37:52Speaker 1: conversation about this, which will remain private. Apology accepted. We
- 37:56Speaker 1: move forward with respect and kindness for one another. So
- 38:00Speaker 1: there it is. Arch made comments about it, was joking
- 38:03Speaker 1: about it yesterday, and something not to joke about. He
- 38:06Speaker 1: said he realized that, had his apology, and Holly said,
- 38:11Speaker 1: apology accepted. We have kindness and understanding.
- 38:14Speaker 3: Let's move on. And so they moved on. So hopefully
- 38:16Speaker 3: he does. I mean, I know people are going to.
- 38:17Speaker 1: Still say things and post things and things like that,
- 38:21Speaker 1: but that's from the principals involved. They made their peace
- 38:25Speaker 1: with it, and they have moved on. All right, coming up,
- 38:28Speaker 1: we'll talk football with Greg Tepper, editor-in-chief of Dave Campbell's
- 38:31Speaker 1: Texas Football Magazine on 13 Under the Zone. As we mentioned,
- 38:42Speaker 1: in the 4 o'clock hour, we hear from the King
- 38:44Speaker 1: George Strait. In the 2 o'clock hour, the immortal Stevie
- 38:47Speaker 1: Ray Vaughan. 3 o'clock hour, we bump back with the
- 38:50Speaker 1: iconic Willie Nelson. What drove you to this particular selection, Jake?
- 38:56Speaker 2: Well, we hadn't gone with devil in a sleeping bag
- 38:59Speaker 2: just yet here on the program. And who knows, Texas
- 39:01Speaker 2: exercising some demons of their own on the way back
- 39:04Speaker 2: to Austin this week.
- 39:05Speaker 3: The devil's in the details, that's for sure.
- 39:11Speaker 1: My good friend and the editor-in-chief of Dave Campbell's Texas
- 39:15Speaker 1: Football Magazine is known for having a devilish grin from
- 39:18Speaker 1: time to time.
- 39:18Speaker 3: That's Greg Tepper, who joins us now. And you do,
- 39:22Speaker 3: you do.
- 39:23Speaker 1: I could just see you grinning on that tweet you had.
- 39:27Speaker 1: Was it was it sunday night or was it yesterday
- 39:29Speaker 1: where you said something like dallas fort worth media you're
- 39:33Speaker 1: welcome yeah in the aftermath of uh the cowboy sunday
- 39:38Speaker 1: night debacle right.
- 39:41Speaker 8: So I'm not a Cowboys fan. My family moved back
- 39:46Speaker 8: to Dallas when I was gaining football consciousness when I
- 39:51Speaker 8: was about 11 or 12. But that's when the Cowboys stunk.
- 39:57Speaker 8: That's when the Cowboys had Quincy Carter as their quarterback.
- 40:00Speaker 8: They weren't very good. And so I was like, I
- 40:03Speaker 8: feel like I'm going to let this pitch pass by.
- 40:04Speaker 3: And that.
- 40:08Speaker 9: It affects.
- 40:09Speaker 8: My brother's a big Cowboys fan. And I have a
- 40:11Speaker 8: lot of friends who are Cowboys fans. And enough friends
- 40:14Speaker 8: that I think are... That I root for them.
- 40:18Speaker 9: But I will tell you.
- 40:20Speaker 8: And I want them to succeed because I want my
- 40:21Speaker 8: friends to be happy and experience joy. But also, I've
- 40:25Speaker 8: just got enough pain in my life. I've just got enough...
- 40:29Speaker 8: I don't need it.
- 40:29Speaker 6: I don't like... And so.
- 40:32Speaker 8: And then I also know that like around, and I
- 40:34Speaker 8: think this is in any NFL city, a loss and
- 40:39Speaker 8: especially a nationally televised loss and especially a nationally televised
- 40:43Speaker 8: loss to like a rival that you've dominated for a
- 40:46Speaker 8: long time.
- 40:46Speaker 9: Good for content.
- 40:49Speaker 3: You know what I mean?
- 40:50Speaker 1: It's a good, it's a good content, good content production. I, I,
- 40:55Speaker 1: I dare say it probably is.
- 40:58Speaker 3: Um, Let me get your thoughts.
- 41:00Speaker 1: I know when I'm on your program on Thursday, you
- 41:02Speaker 1: asked me what the vibe and the pulse down here is,
- 41:06Speaker 1: and you can imagine it's going to be really upbeat
- 41:07Speaker 1: after what happened here on Saturday night as well. But
- 41:10Speaker 1: what's the statewide vibe you get, not only about Texas,
- 41:14Speaker 1: but about the college football scene this week? Interesting matchups,
- 41:18Speaker 1: North Texas playing at Texas State, and Texas State is.
- 41:21Speaker 3: Trying to get off the deck.
- 41:22Speaker 1: UTSA is coming up the road here. North Texas comes
- 41:26Speaker 1: off an impressive win over UNLV. And then TCU kind
- 41:30Speaker 1: of got back to work and SMU got back to
- 41:32Speaker 1: work and all those as well. But your thoughts on
- 41:33Speaker 1: the overall vibe that the folks in the office there
- 41:36Speaker 1: are getting?
- 41:38Speaker 9: Yeah, I think it's kind of a mixed bag.
- 41:39Speaker 8: Obviously, you see what Texas did, and obviously, that's the headline.
- 41:43Speaker 3: I don't need to.
- 41:44Speaker 8: Pump anybody's tires down there in Austin. You guys are
- 41:46Speaker 8: well aware. That's the big headline there. I think you
- 41:51Speaker 8: are correct to mention North Texas. What they did to
- 41:53Speaker 8: UNLV in the first win under Neil Brown was really impressive.
- 41:57Speaker 3: And when you.
- 41:57Speaker 9: Pair that with... what I.
- 42:00Speaker 8: Would classify as a good loss in week one to
- 42:03Speaker 8: the national champs in Indiana, where they went on the
- 42:06Speaker 8: road and played the team that's the reigning national champs
- 42:08Speaker 8: and played okay, didn't embarrass themselves, didn't go out there
- 42:12Speaker 8: and get trounced. I think that is really positive. There's
- 42:14Speaker 8: a lot of positive. I thought what UTSA kind of
- 42:17Speaker 8: able to get the win on the road at Texas
- 42:21Speaker 8: State in a really nice back and forth affair. I
- 42:26Speaker 8: thought there's a lot of positivity coming from there. I
- 42:29Speaker 8: think there's positivity coming from the hilltop with what we've
- 42:32Speaker 8: seen so far, especially from Kevin Jennings. He's been fantastic. Now,
- 42:37Speaker 8: it's not all sunshine and daffodils. Now, I will say
- 42:39Speaker 8: it's interesting because there's two programs that I think The
- 42:42Speaker 8: standards are so high that even though they won, there
- 42:45Speaker 8: are enough red flags to look at it. One of
- 42:47Speaker 8: them is Texas Tech. They beat Oregon State, and we
- 42:52Speaker 8: don't apologize for wins about stuff like that. But there
- 42:56Speaker 8: are still some concerns, right? The offense looked a little
- 42:59Speaker 8: bit out of sync.
- 43:00Speaker 9: The defense... I think they're missing kind of that war
- 43:04Speaker 9: daddy on the defensive.
- 43:05Speaker 3: Side right now.
- 43:06Speaker 9: Let's not say they won't come along. And then there's
- 43:08Speaker 9: A & M. And A & M, look, they beat
- 43:10Speaker 9: Arizona State. And again, we don't apologize for wins.
- 43:13Speaker 8: But it's one of those things that the more you
- 43:16Speaker 8: dive into it, the more you're like, oh, wow, there's
- 43:19Speaker 8: some concerns here. They got outgained pretty severely in that
- 43:23Speaker 8: game by Arizona State.
- 43:26Speaker 9: And A & M wasn't able to get a pass rush.
- 43:31Speaker 8: Now, again, they forced a bunch of mistakes, and Arizona
- 43:34Speaker 8: State kept handing the ball over to them, and we
- 43:36Speaker 8: don't apologize for that. But I think that it's one
- 43:38Speaker 8: of those things that with those particular wins, they maybe
- 43:41Speaker 8: weren't as emphatic. as maybe their fans were hoping. So
- 43:45Speaker 8: I think overall, the state of the state is good.
- 43:49Speaker 8: But we'll find out a lot more kind of moving forward, obviously,
- 43:54Speaker 8: as we get more data points. But more importantly, as
- 43:56Speaker 8: we see if these kind of concerns that we have
- 44:00Speaker 8: for teams that have been winning kind of manifest themselves
- 44:04Speaker 8: in any sort of meaningful win-loss way.
- 44:06Speaker 3: How good is SMU? Hard to tell down here.
- 44:11Speaker 8: I think they're pretty good. I think that they are
- 44:14Speaker 8: in a legit ACC contender. I mean, look, last week,
- 44:18Speaker 8: you know, they dominated in their win over UC Davis.
- 44:23Speaker 9: That was never going to be a challenge for them.
- 44:25Speaker 8: But to go on the road, we talked about it
- 44:27Speaker 8: when they go on the road and beat Florida State
- 44:29Speaker 8: in week one.
- 44:30Speaker 9: That says something.
- 44:31Speaker 8: I have a couple of small concerns about their defense,
- 44:35Speaker 8: but I do think that offensively, they've got the guy
- 44:38Speaker 8: in Kevin Jennings that if he can stay upright and
- 44:40Speaker 8: they can continue to protect him, the sky's the.
- 44:42Speaker 3: Limit for them.
- 44:43Speaker 8: Now, look, I think the ACC... is overall stronger than
- 44:51Speaker 8: maybe people give them credit for. I think that it's
- 44:54Speaker 8: a really good, I think it's a pretty good conference.
- 44:57Speaker 8: Obviously Miami at the very top, but there's, I think,
- 45:00Speaker 8: some depth within that conference that makes it You know,
- 45:04Speaker 8: difficult is particularly Louisville, Virginia, programs like that.
- 45:08Speaker 9: But I think that SMU is right there in that mix.
- 45:11Speaker 8: And they're going to have an opportunity to make some
- 45:14Speaker 8: noise and play an ACC championship game if things go correctly.
- 45:17Speaker 9: You just got to make sure they maintain.
- 45:19Speaker 8: And I think, again, I think the biggest thing is
- 45:22Speaker 8: got to make sure you keep Kevin Jennings upright. As
- 45:24Speaker 8: long as he's upright, things are going to be going okay.
- 45:26Speaker 8: But if he were to get injured or he were
- 45:28Speaker 8: to get kind of banged up a little bit, that
- 45:30Speaker 8: could be a real problem for them.
- 45:32Speaker 1: I would ask you the same question about Houston with
- 45:35Speaker 1: the added emphasis based on what you said about Texas Tech.
- 45:38Speaker 1: This business Friday night on the South Plains could be
- 45:40Speaker 1: pretty interesting, couldn't it?
- 45:43Speaker 9: This is a big game.
- 45:45Speaker 8: This is a really big game because I'll tell you what,
- 45:48Speaker 8: Houston so far, no notes.
- 45:50Speaker 9: They have been as advertised.
- 45:52Speaker 8: They have been kind of, I would say they're like
- 45:55Speaker 8: the sexy pick in the Big 12 right now, just
- 45:58Speaker 8: because what Willie Fritz is his history and what he's
- 46:01Speaker 8: been able to do. They've looked great in their first
- 46:04Speaker 8: two weeks. They have looked cohesive. They've looked dominant, especially
- 46:08Speaker 8: on the defensive side, which I think is really important
- 46:11Speaker 8: for them. But here's their test. They get to go
- 46:15Speaker 8: on the road to Lubbock on a Friday night, much
- 46:18Speaker 8: to the chagrin of Cody Campbell, that they will have
- 46:22Speaker 8: an opportunity on national television to make a statement and
- 46:25Speaker 8: to establish themselves, knock off the defending Big 12 champions.
- 46:29Speaker 8: I think Houston's got a real shot in this game.
- 46:31Speaker 8: I think that they are understandable underdogs on the road
- 46:34Speaker 8: in this one. But they're not going to walk in scared.
- 46:38Speaker 8: And we've been big believers in what Willie Fritz is
- 46:40Speaker 8: building there. We think that they've got a real good
- 46:43Speaker 8: shot to go up there and knock off the Red Raiders.
- 46:45Speaker 8: It'll take a lot because they're hard to beat anywhere.
- 46:48Speaker 8: They're especially hard to beat in Lubbock. They're especially hard
- 46:50Speaker 8: to beat in Lubbock at night. But that, I think,
- 46:53Speaker 8: is something that is obviously a huge, huge game and
- 46:57Speaker 8: will go a long way towards determining what the Big
- 47:00Speaker 8: 12 championship looks like. And we said this a lot
- 47:03Speaker 8: in the high school ranks. This is one of those
- 47:05Speaker 8: games where it wouldn't be a surprise if this is
- 47:06Speaker 8: the first two meetings.
- 47:09Speaker 3: Yeah, absolutely.
- 47:09Speaker 1: No doubt about it. Greg Tepper, editor-in-chief of Dave Campbell's
- 47:12Speaker 1: Texas Football Magazine, joining us here on 1300 Zone. Let's
- 47:15Speaker 1: jump to the high school thing. And you think the
- 47:19Speaker 1: collective high school community got a vision of.
- 47:22Speaker 3: Paddles, stand back, woo! Oh, we got a pulse. It's DeSoto.
- 47:27Speaker 1: They're still alive after that duel in the Cotton Bowl
- 47:32Speaker 1: with Duncanville last Saturday.
- 47:34Speaker 9: Man, I said this on my show yesterday, on Monday.
- 47:38Speaker 9: I think it's okay for us to just say about
- 47:41Speaker 9: some certain teams, I don't know. And with DeSoto, we
- 47:46Speaker 9: caught some.
- 47:46Speaker 8: Flack for dropping them out of the 5A rankings after
- 47:49Speaker 8: they dropped to 0-2. Now, they played, obviously, an extremely
- 47:52Speaker 8: difficult schedule at that point with that team from Florida.
- 47:55Speaker 9: And then they played Allen. But they had basically been
- 47:58Speaker 9: functionally non-competitive for two games. And then suddenly they come out.
- 48:03Speaker 8: And they find a way past, you know, Duncanville in
- 48:07Speaker 8: what can only be described as like a Herculean performance
- 48:10Speaker 8: from Sir Rod Baker. He's like throwing up on the
- 48:13Speaker 8: sideline and then missing one play and getting back in
- 48:16Speaker 8: there and taking the snap. They have built the whole
- 48:18Speaker 8: plane out of Sir Rod Baker. I think that I'm
- 48:22Speaker 8: of two minds with DeSoto. On one hand, my concerns
- 48:26Speaker 8: are still persist as far as they've got to find
- 48:29Speaker 8: a secondary weapon outside of Sir Rod Baker. They've got
- 48:33Speaker 8: to be able to unload the box because otherwise they're
- 48:35Speaker 8: just going to keep running him and running him and
- 48:37Speaker 8: running him. And just frankly, nobody's got that kind of
- 48:40Speaker 8: tread on their tires for that last 16 games, which
- 48:42Speaker 8: is what they hope they play. On the other hand,
- 48:45Speaker 8: they're done playing 6-18s. Like, they've made it through their
- 48:50Speaker 8: brutal non-district schedule. They're 1-2. They're battered and bruised, but
- 48:54Speaker 8: at the same time, they're now into district play. They
- 48:57Speaker 8: played an unbeaten Burleson Centennial team this week, but I
- 48:59Speaker 8: think they're better than them. A couple weeks from now,
- 49:03Speaker 8: they play Lancaster. That is a real test, but at
- 49:06Speaker 8: the same time, they're now playing teams within their weight class.
- 49:09Speaker 8: So we'll find out more about it. I still have
- 49:12Speaker 8: my concerns, and I think that there are major... not
- 49:15Speaker 8: major but there are persistent concerns about what the offense
- 49:19Speaker 8: looks like but we don't apologize for beating Duncanville like
- 49:23Speaker 8: that's that's a really nice win punching up and getting
- 49:26Speaker 8: a win I have some concerns about Duncanville now and
- 49:28Speaker 8: by the way they're staring down the barrel yeah yeah
- 49:31Speaker 8: they're staring down the barrel of one three taking on North.
- 49:33Speaker 1: Crowley this week Yeah, that's where I was going to
- 49:35Speaker 1: go next is like how much concern should one have
- 49:39Speaker 1: for Duncanville given the fact of who they played and then,
- 49:43Speaker 1: you know, Allen summarily kind of slapped them around a
- 49:45Speaker 1: little bit and then now they've got to deal with
- 49:47Speaker 1: a North Crowley team that's really, really good.
- 49:51Speaker 9: Yeah, now again, similar situation.
- 49:53Speaker 8: Their two losses are to DeSoto. We just got done
- 49:56Speaker 8: talking about them. And then Allen, who has looked like
- 49:58Speaker 8: the best team in Texas so far. But the issue
- 50:02Speaker 8: for them is twofold. One, and my colleague Matt Stepp
- 50:06Speaker 8: mentioned this to me because he went and we watched
- 50:08Speaker 8: the DeSoto-Duncanville game at the Cotton Bowl. He said one
- 50:11Speaker 8: of the things about Duncanville this year is that, he
- 50:13Speaker 8: says twofold. One, they're not as big as they usually are,
- 50:16Speaker 8: like physically large. Like they do not have the kind
- 50:19Speaker 8: of beef.
- 50:20Speaker 9: And God knows we've watched enough Reginald Samples football over
- 50:23Speaker 9: the past decade or so.
- 50:24Speaker 8: We know that that guy likes beef. And they don't
- 50:27Speaker 8: necessarily have that. They also, and this is the point
- 50:31Speaker 8: he brought up, they don't have that defensive war daddy.
- 50:34Speaker 8: They don't have that guy who, they don't have Colin Simmons.
- 50:38Speaker 3: You know what I mean?
- 50:38Speaker 8: Where in the past, it was like, oh, they've got
- 50:42Speaker 8: a bunch of really good players, but that guy over there,
- 50:44Speaker 8: like he's a cyborg.
- 50:46Speaker 9: They don't have that right now. And so I think
- 50:48Speaker 9: that's one of the things I'm concerned about.
- 50:50Speaker 8: And kind of speaking in the same way that I
- 50:53Speaker 8: talked about DeSoto, if you want to say that DeSoto, okay,
- 50:56Speaker 8: they get into district play, things lighten up for them.
- 51:00Speaker 9: This is the wrong district for you.
- 51:01Speaker 8: To have some flaws because right now, taking on North
- 51:05Speaker 8: Crowley this week, and then in a few weeks, they're
- 51:07Speaker 8: taking on Waxahachie, the number one team in the state. So, yeah,
- 51:11Speaker 8: I think that there's real concerns about Duncanville this year
- 51:16Speaker 8: that maybe there are some holes that they may not
- 51:19Speaker 8: have the personnel to fill in 2026.
- 51:20Speaker 1: How for real.
- 51:25Speaker 3: Is Prosper.
- 51:26Speaker 1: You just saw them last week. They beat Westlake. They
- 51:28Speaker 1: can obviously get to use your term, pointsy. They can
- 51:33Speaker 1: do that. Now, acid test this week, playing Allen. But,
- 51:38Speaker 1: I mean, are they legitimate to have a shot to
- 51:40Speaker 1: beat them? I mean, look, they just beat Westlake.
- 51:44Speaker 8: They just hung 49 on Tony Salazar defense. That goes
- 51:49Speaker 8: for something. Their offense is electric, okay? They've got a quarterback,
- 51:55Speaker 8: Tyler Albert. He's not, I want to say this in
- 51:58Speaker 8: a nice way, like he's not, like walking off the bus,
- 52:01Speaker 8: he's not going to impress you all that much. Like 5'11, 170,
- 52:05Speaker 8: but man, when the lights turn on, this kid is
- 52:09Speaker 8: incredibly at eight total, seven total touchdowns against Westlake last week.
- 52:14Speaker 8: He's got two big time receivers. One of them, Marcus McCoy.
- 52:17Speaker 8: The other one, they've got a tight end. They use
- 52:19Speaker 8: a ton, Elliot Brown. That combination of those three is dynamic.
- 52:24Speaker 8: They are fun to watch. The defense is giving up
- 52:27Speaker 8: 40 points a game. And it's really interesting because last
- 52:30Speaker 8: week on our coaches call going into that game, Tyler Moore,
- 52:33Speaker 8: their head coach, he's a great guy and super candid.
- 52:35Speaker 8: He just told us, hey, we're better than a 40-point
- 52:38Speaker 8: game defense. We put ourselves in a bad situation. Special
- 52:41Speaker 8: teams and turnovers and stuff. He's like, we're better than that.
- 52:44Speaker 8: And they give up 40 points on the dot to Westlake. Now,
- 52:47Speaker 8: they've won every game. I'm not sure that's going to
- 52:51Speaker 8: work against Allen, but you never know. If you've got
- 52:56Speaker 8: that flamethrower in your back pocket, you can go out
- 52:58Speaker 8: there and do it. They are a fun team to watch.
- 53:02Speaker 8: Your entertainment dollar goes a long way with Prosper.
- 53:05Speaker 9: They are fun.
- 53:07Speaker 8: Um we will find out a lot more this week
- 53:09Speaker 8: against allen as district play opens to get him at
- 53:11Speaker 8: home on a thursday night in a raucous crowd there
- 53:15Speaker 8: um it should be fun but can they like this
- 53:19Speaker 8: this would be as impressed this would be more impressive
- 53:22Speaker 8: than beating westlake which is saying something because beating westlake
- 53:25Speaker 8: is is always impressive.
- 53:27Speaker 1: No doubt about it uh all right uh As Greg
- 53:30Speaker 1: Tepper joins us, time for what we like to call
- 53:32Speaker 1: the meanest thing we do each week. He actually coined
- 53:34Speaker 1: that phrase. I just kind of hopped on board with
- 53:36Speaker 1: it since he's been with us. And I give you
- 53:40Speaker 1: three games and you tell me what you think of
- 53:42Speaker 1: the three games and you go from there and pick
- 53:46Speaker 1: one game out of it. Now, let me just say
- 53:49Speaker 1: this before we get started. You have a real humdinger
- 53:54Speaker 1: of a game in your own right. I was actually
- 53:55Speaker 1: going to have it on the list.
- 53:56Speaker 3: Oh, no, no, no.
- 53:57Speaker 1: Wait, you guys are doing Argyle Highland Park, right?
- 54:00Speaker 3: We are.
- 54:00Speaker 9: Yeah, we're doing Argyle Highland Park.
- 54:02Speaker 1: Give me a breakdown of that before I give you
- 54:06Speaker 1: the game that I'm going to give you from that area.
- 54:09Speaker 9: First of all, whale of a coaching matchup.
- 54:10Speaker 8: You've got two top 30 all-time winningest coaches, and Randy Allen,
- 54:13Speaker 8: number two, and Todd Rodgers, number 27 or so, in
- 54:17Speaker 8: all-time wins. These guys are ball knowers. Argyle's a beautiful
- 54:21Speaker 8: new stadium. Argyle off to a really fast start. Hayes Hackney,
- 54:24Speaker 8: the move-in from Prosper Walnut Grove. He's got a full
- 54:27Speaker 8: complement of weapons, including Julian Caldwell on the outside, who's
- 54:30Speaker 8: a legit blue chip wide receiver. Really like their defense.
- 54:33Speaker 8: Highland Park is interesting. They started 0-2. Their defense really
- 54:37Speaker 8: was getting gashed by good teams, by Louisville and by
- 54:41Speaker 8: Rockwall Heath. They played last week against Tyler and looked
- 54:44Speaker 8: a lot more Highland Park. They've got their outstanding quarterback,
- 54:48Speaker 8: Buck Randall, who is now the leading passer in Highland
- 54:50Speaker 8: Park history. Yes, more than Matthew Stafford. And he is really,
- 54:56Speaker 8: really playing at a high level right now. My question
- 54:59Speaker 8: is going to be, can the Highland Park defense, is
- 55:00Speaker 8: it a lot more like we saw last week in
- 55:02Speaker 8: their win against Tyler than it was in the first
- 55:04Speaker 8: two weeks?
- 55:04Speaker 9: It'll be a challenge.
- 55:05Speaker 8: I think, again, we'll have a pointy affair on Friday
- 55:08Speaker 8: night on our broadcast.
- 55:09Speaker 3: Okay.
- 55:10Speaker 10: All right.
- 55:10Speaker 1: So here are the games I'm going to throw at
- 55:12Speaker 1: you here and see what you think of this. So
- 55:14Speaker 1: I'll keep it with a 5A matchup, whether you're talking
- 55:17Speaker 1: D2 or D1. because it involves another team that I'm still,
- 55:22Speaker 1: I don't know if struggling is the right word, but
- 55:24Speaker 1: still looking to try to get a handle on.
- 55:26Speaker 3: And that's Weiss.
- 55:28Speaker 1: And they're at home against an unbeaten College Station team.
- 55:31Speaker 1: This Weiss team beat Round Rock, but they've turned around
- 55:34Speaker 1: a loss since then. Round Rock, by the way, goes
- 55:37Speaker 1: out and beats Dripping Springs. I've got Round Rock Vandegrift
- 55:40Speaker 1: on Friday night, which should be an awful lot of
- 55:41Speaker 1: fun over at Monroe Stadium. But what's your take on
- 55:45Speaker 1: College Station at Weiss at the field in Pflugerville?
- 55:49Speaker 9: Whale of a game. I'm so excited about this one
- 55:52Speaker 9: for a lot of reasons.
- 55:53Speaker 8: One of them is that this is a game of pace.
- 55:59Speaker 8: The way I would describe College Nation is they move deliberately.
- 56:02Speaker 8: They're a team that moves at a deliberate pace. They've
- 56:05Speaker 8: got really nice players like Noah Semeny, their quarterback, and
- 56:09Speaker 8: Trey Walton, but their defense is kind of what leads
- 56:10Speaker 8: the way.
- 56:11Speaker 6: Weiss.
- 56:12Speaker 8: is not deliberate in their pace. Weiss is like all
- 56:16Speaker 8: systems go, like as fast.
- 56:18Speaker 9: As you can go.
- 56:19Speaker 8: Playmakers galore, Jackson Shad, Trey Moore, Jordan Anderson. I think
- 56:23Speaker 8: a lot of it comes down to pace. A lot
- 56:25Speaker 8: of it comes down to whether or not Weiss can
- 56:26Speaker 8: play defense. That's kind of the biggest thing on this
- 56:29Speaker 8: one is can their defense match up with what their
- 56:31Speaker 8: offense is doing. The other thing is that there's a
- 56:33Speaker 8: fascinating story here because the College Station has had Weiss's
- 56:37Speaker 8: number Last year, Weiss gave up a double-digit lead, a
- 56:42Speaker 8: halftime lead, and lost to College Station. They did the
- 56:45Speaker 8: same thing to A & M Consolidated. I know that
- 56:49Speaker 8: sticks in Malcolm Hill's craw. Can they find a way
- 56:53Speaker 8: past that and make sure history is behind them? We'll
- 56:56Speaker 8: get huge, huge District 12 5A Division I opener.
- 57:00Speaker 9: A massive district game.
- 57:01Speaker 1: All right, you can choose between that game or either
- 57:05Speaker 1: of these other two.
- 57:06Speaker 2: Also.
- 57:07Speaker 1: Out of five AD2. How about Brenham, Port Natchez, Groves?
- 57:12Speaker 1: And then I drop all the way down to six, man,
- 57:13Speaker 1: for Borden County and Rankin.
- 57:16Speaker 7: Man.
- 57:17Speaker 2: Man.
- 57:17Speaker 1: So which of the three are you at? If you're
- 57:19Speaker 1: going to be at one of them? If you weren't
- 57:21Speaker 1: doing Argyle Highland Park, which of these three would.
- 57:23Speaker 6: You have did?
- 57:25Speaker 9: I'm probably up at the field.
- 57:26Speaker 8: I'm probably up at the field in Pflugerville because of
- 57:28Speaker 8: that and the district implications there. But Brenham P &
- 57:31Speaker 8: G is really interesting too. P & G, one and two,
- 57:34Speaker 8: just got beat by Fort Penn Crawford at home. Now
- 57:36Speaker 8: they got to go on the road to Brenham. Jacoby
- 57:38Speaker 8: Dixon is back. Like, Jacoby Dixon, the ballot of Jacoby Dixon,
- 57:43Speaker 8: their superstar running back, is really strange, but they're glad
- 57:46Speaker 8: to have him back. He's been fantastic. They're up to
- 57:48Speaker 8: a 3-0 start. And then, yeah, you know I can't
- 57:50Speaker 8: pass up. a good six-man action, Borden County and Rankin.
- 57:53Speaker 8: That'll be a lot of fun. Rankin, the team that
- 57:55Speaker 8: took a loss earlier this year, but they got right
- 57:57Speaker 8: back on the saddle last week. By the way, I
- 57:59Speaker 8: don't know if you saw, but my colleague Ashley Pickle's
- 58:03Speaker 8: parents went to Strong for Gordon Strong.
- 58:06Speaker 1: Did they go?
- 58:07Speaker 2: And they were.
- 58:08Speaker 3: Yes.
- 58:08Speaker 8: And they were sending me photos all throughout the night.
- 58:10Speaker 8: Like I'm working and they're like having the time of
- 58:13Speaker 8: their lives, eating at Mary's and like watching, watching like
- 58:17Speaker 8: elite level six man football at a great stadium there.
- 58:20Speaker 8: And so like, I was like, I like my job,
- 58:23Speaker 8: but that would have been a better job.
- 58:25Speaker 3: No doubt about it.
- 58:26Speaker 1: Should we have Stephenville on upset alert playing at Abilene Wiley?
- 58:31Speaker 8: Yeah, I think Wiley's really sneaky. I think Wiley's really sneaky.
- 58:35Speaker 8: They've got some... The question for Stephenville and beating them
- 58:39Speaker 8: is always a matter of can you match up with
- 58:41Speaker 8: them up front. Go back to their title against Kilgore
- 58:45Speaker 8: last year, where that game was a full-on taffy poll,
- 58:50Speaker 8: scoreless at half.
- 58:51Speaker 9: It was because Kilgore matched them up front. Now, here's
- 58:53Speaker 9: the thing.
- 58:54Speaker 8: Stephenville's winning up front on the other side, too. I
- 58:56Speaker 8: think Wiley's one of those rare teams that can... match
- 58:59Speaker 8: up with them up front and i think that could
- 59:01Speaker 8: give the yellow jackets a little bit of trouble if
- 59:03Speaker 8: they're not careful.
- 59:04Speaker 3: Final thing here.
- 59:06Speaker 1: That aforementioned Gordon Strawn game.
- 59:11Speaker 3: Should we be.
- 59:12Speaker 1: More impressed by the fact that Gordon has now won
- 59:14Speaker 1: 47 in a row, or should we be more impressed
- 59:18Speaker 1: by the fact that it was a full game and
- 59:19Speaker 1: that Strawn lost by 18 points and they weren't 45
- 59:23Speaker 1: like Gordon seems to do to just about everybody else?
- 59:26Speaker 8: One of those games, and Dwayne Lee will not take
- 59:29Speaker 8: any solace in me saying this, but I look at
- 59:31Speaker 8: that as a pretty decent result for Strong. Remember, that's
- 59:33Speaker 8: a 180-2 team punching up to a 180-1 team that's
- 59:36Speaker 8: won three straight state championships. For them to hang, I mean,
- 59:39Speaker 8: Gordon won every game last year by the 45-point mercy rule,
- 59:43Speaker 8: so that's at least a streak of... and I think
- 59:47Speaker 8: the first two they did as well, so at least
- 59:49Speaker 8: a streak of 17 in a row of the Mercy rule.
- 59:51Speaker 8: So for them to hang in the ballgame that long,
- 59:53Speaker 8: I think is a credit to Strawn.
- 59:55Speaker 9: They'll be just fine. I ain't worried about them.
- 59:58Speaker 8: I think they may have dropped one spot in our
- 1:00:00Speaker 8: rankings just because that's a pretty impressive performance against a
- 1:00:03Speaker 8: team that is of according to statute, the only issue
- 1:00:08Speaker 8: is that it's like they're arch rivals, so it stinks altogether.
- 1:00:11Speaker 3: Yeah, I hear you.
- 1:00:12Speaker 1: He's Greg Tepper, editor-in-chief of Dave Campbell's Texas Football Magazine.
- 1:00:15Speaker 1: I take it you haven't been bombarded with ticket requests
- 1:00:17Speaker 1: like you were last week for Texas Ohio State for
- 1:00:20Speaker 1: Texas UTSA this week.
- 1:00:22Speaker 9: No, not as many.
- 1:00:23Speaker 8: Not as many people asking me which Austin area game
- 1:00:26Speaker 8: they can go to for this.
- 1:00:27Speaker 9: But, I mean, there's a good one you're going to
- 1:00:30Speaker 9: be on down there.
- 1:00:30Speaker 3: A couple really good ones in Austin. Yeah, yeah. There'll
- 1:00:33Speaker 3: be a couple of good ones. Hey, appreciate it, Tepp.
- 1:00:35Speaker 6: Thanks. All right, play, guys.
- 1:00:37Speaker 1: That is our Tuesdays with Tepper segment there with Greg Tepper, editor-in-chief,
- 1:00:41Speaker 1: Dave Campbell's Texas Football Magazine. We have more coming up
- 1:00:44Speaker 1: when we continue on 13 Under the Zone. Here on
- 1:00:53Speaker 1: Texan Tuesday. Thanks again to Greg Tepper, editor-in-chief, Dave Campbell's
- 1:00:59Speaker 1: Texas Football Magazine. Joining us, Clint Black. Where's Clint from
- 1:01:05Speaker 1: other than the state of Texas? Yeah, born up in
- 1:01:07Speaker 1: New Jersey. Yeah.
- 1:01:08Speaker 2: Raised in Katy.
- 1:01:10Speaker 1: Okay.
- 1:01:11Speaker 7: All right.
- 1:01:12Speaker 3: I always liked him. I had this CD.
- 1:01:14Speaker 6: In fact, there's a better man on there.
- 1:01:16Speaker 3: So that one. That song is killing time. It's killing me.
- 1:01:21Speaker 1: We had a couple of questions to get to. You
- 1:01:28Speaker 1: hit me with one of them. You said, was this
- 1:01:30Speaker 1: on a talkback or was it just another one?
- 1:01:31Speaker 2: Yeah, we got a talkback just a little while ago.
- 1:01:34Speaker 2: I don't have a name on this. They only left
- 1:01:37Speaker 2: their email address. But here's the question for you.
- 1:01:40Speaker 7: Okay.
- 1:01:42Speaker 10: Can you please get Craig to explain the two time
- 1:01:47Speaker 10: stoppages with under a minute in the game Saturday night.
- 1:01:52Speaker 10: One at 51 seconds, the other one at 34, both
- 1:01:54Speaker 10: of them on running plays.
- 1:01:57Speaker 6: Thanks.
- 1:01:58Speaker 3: Okay.
- 1:01:58Speaker 1: I know that one was stopped for, well, they both
- 1:02:03Speaker 1: got stopped when the line in the game was achieved.
- 1:02:06Speaker 1: So they stopped the clock for that. Then they put
- 1:02:08Speaker 1: it back in motion. But a timeout was called. Texas
- 1:02:11Speaker 1: took one timeout in there. And then the other one
- 1:02:15Speaker 1: might have been a review game.
- 1:02:17Speaker 2: Yeah, I think they were looking on the second down run.
- 1:02:21Speaker 6: Right.
- 1:02:22Speaker 2: They were looking. I think Sark wanted them to look
- 1:02:25Speaker 2: and see if the ball was in. Right.
- 1:02:27Speaker 1: And then Ohio State wanted to look for a fumble.
- 1:02:29Speaker 1: To see if Smothers fumbled the ball. And in fact,
- 1:02:32Speaker 1: he did. But it might have been difficult to overturn
- 1:02:35Speaker 1: the result of it because it was a mass of humanity,
- 1:02:38Speaker 1: whether the knee was touching down. And in any event,
- 1:02:41Speaker 1: Amari Winston fell on it anyway.
- 1:02:42Speaker 3: Right.
- 1:02:43Speaker 2: And so then there was this sort of game of chicken.
- 1:02:45Speaker 2: I was worried Ohio State was going to get out
- 1:02:47Speaker 2: of there keeping a timeout from a Texas perspective.
- 1:02:49Speaker 1: Well, they had to use the timeout. That was one
- 1:02:52Speaker 1: of them. That might have been the one. That might
- 1:02:53Speaker 1: have been the first stoppage. Because a player lost his helmet. Right.
- 1:02:57Speaker 1: And they had to spend the timeout or there would
- 1:03:00Speaker 1: have been a 10-second runoff. And I even said that
- 1:03:03Speaker 1: on the broadcast. They're going to have to use a
- 1:03:04Speaker 1: timeout here or it's going to tick down.
- 1:03:06Speaker 2: And I thought when they used that timeout, they were
- 1:03:09Speaker 2: then going to let Texas score.
- 1:03:11Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 1:03:12Speaker 6: They didn't do that.
- 1:03:13Speaker 3: And they didn't.
- 1:03:13Speaker 1: They decided maybe they're remembering a year ago when they
- 1:03:15Speaker 1: stopped Texas at the goal line and thinking they could
- 1:03:17Speaker 1: do it again.
- 1:03:18Speaker 3: It could have been that.
- 1:03:19Speaker 1: Okay. So that was.
- 1:03:21Speaker 3: And then we had somebody else texting in a question?
- 1:03:25Speaker 2: No, just on the text line.
- 1:03:27Speaker 9: All right.
- 1:03:27Speaker 7: All right.
- 1:03:27Speaker 1: So also... We had the question coming in on the
- 1:03:32Speaker 1: text line. Somebody's saying, it's been well documented about Texas'
- 1:03:35Speaker 1: struggle in the red zone the past couple of years.
- 1:03:37Speaker 3: On Monday, it is presser.
- 1:03:39Speaker 1: Sark mentioned his concern over turnovers in red zone defense,
- 1:03:42Speaker 1: but no mention of his red zone offense, which currently ranks...
- 1:03:45Speaker 1: smack dab in the middle of the pack of the
- 1:03:46Speaker 1: SEC at number eight. Hopefully he recognizes that this area
- 1:03:50Speaker 1: needs improvement, not just the defense. I totally agree with you.
- 1:03:53Speaker 1: And he did make one reference to that. So we've
- 1:03:56Speaker 1: got to be better in the red zone. He did
- 1:03:58Speaker 1: say that. The thing about the current ranking, Uh, it's a,
- 1:04:03Speaker 1: it's kind of a small sample size given who, uh,
- 1:04:06Speaker 1: they were playing in Ohio state as opposed to some
- 1:04:09Speaker 1: of the other teams like, you know, Georgia playing Western
- 1:04:11Speaker 1: Kentucky and in some of those, but I do think
- 1:04:14Speaker 1: we'll get a better read on it as these next
- 1:04:17Speaker 1: couple of weeks go forward. And as you heard him say,
- 1:04:21Speaker 1: he's really concerned about ball security, wanting to make sure
- 1:04:24Speaker 1: that the guys take care of the football. And yes, the, the, uh, uh, he,
- 1:04:30Speaker 1: he mentioned, um, not so much red zone defense, third
- 1:04:34Speaker 1: down defense, where they're like last in the SEC. Third
- 1:04:39Speaker 1: down defense. That's an action item for sure. But it's
- 1:04:44Speaker 1: a good question there. And it's something that they'll get into.
- 1:04:48Speaker 1: And I'll ask him about it on the show tomorrow
- 1:04:51Speaker 1: when we record Longhorn Weekly. I'll ask him about those
- 1:04:54Speaker 1: areas of concern and see what his thoughts are on
- 1:04:57Speaker 1: that now that they will have had a couple of,
- 1:04:59Speaker 1: you know, hay in the barn practice days under their belt.
- 1:05:03Speaker 1: All right, we'll be back to wrap up our number
- 1:05:05Speaker 1: two on 13 Under the Zone. Third and final hour
- 1:05:16Speaker 1: of the program here on Sports Radio AM 1300 The Zone.
- 1:05:22Speaker 1: Craig Lane joined by the producer Jay Kerman. If you're
- 1:05:24Speaker 1: watching us on YouTube, you see Jake on the right.
- 1:05:27Speaker 1: His face will be replaced here in a few minutes.
- 1:05:30Speaker 1: By that of Jeff Traylor, the head coach of the
- 1:05:32Speaker 1: UTSA Roadrunners.
- 1:05:33Speaker 2: Much to everybody's relief.
- 1:05:36Speaker 1: We'll have him come up. Arch, did you get a
- 1:05:39Speaker 1: chance to watch any of the Monday night game last night?
- 1:05:41Speaker 2: Yeah, I did. I saw a big, big chunk of it.
- 1:05:45Speaker 9: Saw all four Bo Nix fumbles?
- 1:05:48Speaker 7: Yeah.
- 1:05:49Speaker 1: It was a tough night. Tough night for him. And
- 1:05:52Speaker 1: tough night for the Broncos. They couldn't tackle very well.
- 1:05:56Speaker 1: I mean, you know, Kenneth Walker III... Looked like the
- 1:05:59Speaker 1: third and the fourth and the fifth. I mean, he
- 1:06:01Speaker 1: was running through, what, 173 rushing yards, scored a couple
- 1:06:04Speaker 1: of touchdowns, one on that little shovel pass. And, you know,
- 1:06:11Speaker 1: much to the contrary of some of the reports, despite
- 1:06:14Speaker 1: reports of contrary, Patrick Mahomes looked pretty able.
- 1:06:17Speaker 2: Yeah, that was always coming, right? Patrick Mahomes with something
- 1:06:20Speaker 2: to prove, rushing it in. on the first touchdown of
- 1:06:24Speaker 2: the year. Andy Reid with something to prove, getting creative,
- 1:06:27Speaker 2: dialing up his patented shovel pass, finding a way to
- 1:06:30Speaker 2: get Travis Kelsey an explosive play in the second half
- 1:06:33Speaker 2: after he looked pretty old and quiet for the first
- 1:06:36Speaker 2: three quarters of the game. And, you know, Eric Biennemi
- 1:06:40Speaker 2: being back, some familiarity between him and Patrick Mahomes. He
- 1:06:43Speaker 2: didn't quite work out at the other stops, but I
- 1:06:45Speaker 2: think Kansas City is welcoming him back to that facility
- 1:06:48Speaker 2: with open arms. The Chiefs defense looking good. Mansoor Delane
- 1:06:53Speaker 2: standing up to the test on his first big night.
- 1:06:55Speaker 2: So I think the Chiefs came out and played a
- 1:06:59Speaker 2: really crisp game. The Broncos looked like they had a
- 1:07:02Speaker 2: first-time play caller last night.
- 1:07:03Speaker 1: Yeah, and that's exactly what the case was. And it
- 1:07:06Speaker 1: ended up coming up on the short end of that one.
- 1:07:09Speaker 1: So week number one is fully in the books. around
- 1:07:12Speaker 1: the National Football League. Coming up in a few minutes,
- 1:07:14Speaker 1: like I said, Jeff Traylor, head coach of the UTSA Roadrunners,
- 1:07:17Speaker 1: will join us.
- 1:07:18Speaker 3: Let's hear a little bit from Arch Manning.
- 1:07:19Speaker 1: In case you didn't hear, Arch did, by the way,
- 1:07:23Speaker 1: issue an apology to Holly Rowe for making light of
- 1:07:26Speaker 1: or laughing at that AI-generated video thing, and she accepted
- 1:07:33Speaker 1: the apology and said, hey, you know, he said, nothing
- 1:07:37Speaker 1: more needs to be said. We move on from here.
- 1:07:41Speaker 1: with friendship and understanding and that sort of thing, and
- 1:07:43Speaker 1: so they move on. As far as coming off the
- 1:07:45Speaker 1: game was concerned, Arch was asked for his thoughts on
- 1:07:49Speaker 1: the performance overall in the game.
- 1:07:51Speaker 7: Proud of the way the guys responded late in the game.
- 1:07:54Speaker 7: It's always good getting a win, but there's a lot left.
- 1:07:58Speaker 7: We didn't play to our standard, so we got a
- 1:08:02Speaker 7: lot of room to go.
- 1:08:03Speaker 11: All right.
- 1:08:04Speaker 3: Also, he was asked about the mental transition.
- 1:08:07Speaker 1: To uh to big games like that and how that's
- 1:08:11Speaker 1: gone for him i.
- 1:08:12Speaker 7: Think it's a credit to our coaches and the way
- 1:08:14Speaker 7: they coach and it's a four-quarter game obviously i'd like
- 1:08:17Speaker 7: to start faster um not have to wait till the
- 1:08:20Speaker 7: fourth quarter to play well but uh that's something we're
- 1:08:23Speaker 7: uh putting an emphasis on this week and to try
- 1:08:25Speaker 7: and start fast versus utsa.
- 1:08:26Speaker 1: One of the guys who helped turn it around was
- 1:08:29Speaker 1: the tight end amari winston made a big fourth down
- 1:08:31Speaker 1: catch recovered a fumble uh offensively to keep a drive
- 1:08:34Speaker 1: going he was discussing how proud he is of of
- 1:08:37Speaker 1: the progress that winston has made i always knew amari
- 1:08:39Speaker 1: was a gamer he practices really hard um he's a
- 1:08:43Speaker 1: stud and i'm proud of the way he came in
- 1:08:45Speaker 1: and did his thing and i think he'll continue to
- 1:08:47Speaker 1: do that as we go along the season arch took
- 1:08:50Speaker 1: some hits in the game on saturday night how's he
- 1:08:52Speaker 1: feeling physically i felt.
- 1:08:54Speaker 7: Great yesterday i'm starting to feel a little more today
- 1:08:57Speaker 7: i don't know why i'm a two-day sore guy but
- 1:08:59Speaker 7: uh feel good.
- 1:09:00Speaker 3: Anytime you get a win, you feel.
- 1:09:02Speaker 1: A little better, too.
- 1:09:02Speaker 3: Okay, all right. And how'd he go about celebrating the win?
- 1:09:06Speaker 7: Went up and saw my family, hung out with them
- 1:09:08Speaker 7: for a while, and then hung out with some friends.
- 1:09:11Speaker 3: And went to bed. It wasn't as crazy of a
- 1:09:13Speaker 3: night as I was thinking.
- 1:09:13Speaker 1: Okay.
- 1:09:16Speaker 3: Texas is now number one in the country.
- 1:09:17Speaker 1: Art, your thoughts?
- 1:09:18Speaker 7: Yeah, the rankings really don't matter until the playoffs. Nothing
- 1:09:22Speaker 7: matters besides winning games every week. And UTSA is a
- 1:09:25Speaker 7: really good team. They're 2-0. They have some confidence. And
- 1:09:28Speaker 7: we got a lot to prove. We left a lot
- 1:09:29Speaker 7: on the table. We're just scratching the surface.
- 1:09:32Speaker 1: All right. Did he have a message to his teammates
- 1:09:35Speaker 1: right before the game-winning touchdown?
- 1:09:36Speaker 3: I don't know what Trevor said. I probably... I don't
- 1:09:39Speaker 3: remember what I said, but I remember it was... It
- 1:09:41Speaker 3: was a lot. We were fired up.
- 1:09:42Speaker 7: I mean, that's what you play for, you know, ball
- 1:09:46Speaker 7: at the one-yard line to win a game.
- 1:09:47Speaker 3: That's what it's all about.
- 1:09:48Speaker 1: That's something that Trevor Goosby had said that he had
- 1:09:50Speaker 1: talked about. And then he was asked about the fact
- 1:09:56Speaker 1: when Hollywood Smothers went down on the second down play
- 1:09:59Speaker 1: and the ball did come loose on the turf, Amari
- 1:10:02Speaker 1: Winston fell on it. And did he know that all
- 1:10:05Speaker 1: of that had happened in that sequence?
- 1:10:07Speaker 3: Whenever the ball is on the ground, I try and
- 1:10:08Speaker 3: go over there too. That's what we're taught. So heads up,
- 1:10:12Speaker 3: play by Amari.
- 1:10:13Speaker 6: Yeah, all right.
- 1:10:13Speaker 1: How about the benefits and the drawbacks of being in
- 1:10:17Speaker 1: a quarterback family? You think about that, and then you
- 1:10:23Speaker 1: think of Owen McCown, the UTSA quarterback, the son of
- 1:10:28Speaker 1: Luke McCown, and his thoughts on the pluses and the minuses.
- 1:10:32Speaker 7: Yeah, I hung out with him some of the summer.
- 1:10:34Speaker 7: He's a really good guy, good player. He had a
- 1:10:36Speaker 7: great year last year. But I think the advantages of it,
- 1:10:40Speaker 7: you get a lot of advice. They've been in your shoes.
- 1:10:43Speaker 7: You can lean on them. I think the disadvantage, yeah,
- 1:10:46Speaker 7: I mean, the comparisons, you've got to take that with
- 1:10:48Speaker 7: a grain of salt. Everyone's their own person. You try
- 1:10:51Speaker 7: and take bits and pieces of their games, but you've
- 1:10:52Speaker 7: got to be you.
- 1:10:54Speaker 11: All right.
- 1:10:55Speaker 1: What about the communication he's been having with Sark in
- 1:10:57Speaker 1: his helmet?
- 1:10:58Speaker 3: It depends.
- 1:10:59Speaker 7: That was really the first time he was like, hey,
- 1:11:01Speaker 7: look for him in here. That was the first time
- 1:11:04Speaker 7: that was happening. It was super clutch. He goes fourth down, convert,
- 1:11:08Speaker 7: and goes to Emmitt.
- 1:11:09Speaker 3: Yeah, big pass to Emmitt Mosley there on fourth down.
- 1:11:13Speaker 1: How did he balance the frustration that can happen with
- 1:11:16Speaker 1: those early turnovers on the first two drives?
- 1:11:18Speaker 7: It was definitely a weird start. My first two throws
- 1:11:20Speaker 7: were turnovers. It wasn't a good feeling. I thought I
- 1:11:24Speaker 7: could have responded better with some good drives after that.
- 1:11:27Speaker 7: Kind of hit a lull there for the five drives
- 1:11:30Speaker 7: after that. So I would like to respond better to
- 1:11:33Speaker 7: that adversity and not have some of those drives, but
- 1:11:37Speaker 7: I thought I could have done better with that.
- 1:11:39Speaker 6: Okay.
- 1:11:40Speaker 1: And then it was asked for flashback moments that he,
- 1:11:43Speaker 1: he really likes to have the opportunity for what happens
- 1:11:45Speaker 1: during the summer.
- 1:11:47Speaker 6: Yeah.
- 1:11:47Speaker 7: When we are in those summer workouts, I'm thinking about
- 1:11:49Speaker 7: playing Ohio state. I'm thinking about playing Ole Miss, LSU, OU,
- 1:11:53Speaker 7: A & M, all those games. And then before the game,
- 1:11:56Speaker 7: I'm thinking back to those summer workouts, how hard we
- 1:11:58Speaker 7: worked in those moments when we're built for this. And
- 1:12:00Speaker 7: I think our coaches, coach Becton, coach Stark do a
- 1:12:03Speaker 7: good job of making us uncomfortable and, Monday through Friday
- 1:12:08Speaker 7: to make us feel comfortable in those moments in the games.
- 1:12:11Speaker 3: Okay. All right.
- 1:12:12Speaker 1: Now we have the new indoor slash outdoor practice facility,
- 1:12:17Speaker 1: the Frank and Woffordinius practice facility. It's beautiful.
- 1:12:21Speaker 3: And it's there.
- 1:12:24Speaker 1: And they can raise those garage doors and go outside
- 1:12:26Speaker 1: to practice and come back inside. And a lot of
- 1:12:29Speaker 1: the players are saying, you know, the best thing about
- 1:12:30Speaker 1: it is it's 450 parking spaces directly underneath. So guys
- 1:12:33Speaker 1: aren't getting parking tickets and that sort of stuff. So
- 1:12:37Speaker 1: does that help to be able to warm up there just,
- 1:12:40Speaker 1: you know, adjacent to the stadium?
- 1:12:42Speaker 7: I think that definitely helps. Shout out Donald, our trainer,
- 1:12:44Speaker 7: his idea. I want to give him credit for that.
- 1:12:48Speaker 7: But I thought that was a good idea.
- 1:12:49Speaker 3: Okay.
- 1:12:50Speaker 10: All right.
- 1:12:51Speaker 1: We'll hear some more from Arj coming up a little
- 1:12:53Speaker 1: bit later on this hour.
- 1:12:55Speaker 3: But up next.
- 1:12:56Speaker 1: We turn our attention to the UTSA Roadrunners and Head
- 1:12:59Speaker 1: Coach Jeff Traylor to join us when we continue on
- 1:13:02Speaker 1: 13 Under the Zone and the iHeartRadio app. Well, as
- 1:13:08Speaker 1: we always say here on a Texan Tuesday, we're always
- 1:13:14Speaker 1: pleased to have on a return cut some of the
- 1:13:19Speaker 1: Texas musical legends of our lifetime.
- 1:13:23Speaker 3: For that matter of.
- 1:13:24Speaker 1: Any lifetime in the 2 o'clock hour, we hear from
- 1:13:29Speaker 1: the immortal Stevie Ray Vaughan, and we did. In the
- 1:13:32Speaker 1: 3 o'clock hour, we hear from the iconic Willie Nelson.
- 1:13:37Speaker 1: What was the Willie Nelson tune that you hit us
- 1:13:40Speaker 1: back with?
- 1:13:41Speaker 2: It was Devil in a Sleeping Bag.
- 1:13:43Speaker 3: Yeah, okay.
- 1:13:44Speaker 2: Off the Shotgun Willie album from 1973. Very nice.
- 1:13:48Speaker 1: Very nice. And in the 4 o'clock hour, we hear
- 1:13:52Speaker 1: from The King. George Strait. So we hear from him,
- 1:13:57Speaker 1: and this particular one is what?
- 1:14:00Speaker 3: Up from San Antonio, I.
- 1:14:01Speaker 1: Think it is?
- 1:14:02Speaker 2: Home in San Antonio.
- 1:14:03Speaker 1: Home in San Antonio.
- 1:14:04Speaker 9: Okay.
- 1:14:05Speaker 1: Because it will be up from San Antonio.
- 1:14:10Speaker 2: From the album back in 1991, The Chill of an
- 1:14:13Speaker 2: Early Fall.
- 1:14:13Speaker 1: Now this is a cover of a Bob Wills and
- 1:14:16Speaker 1: the Texas Playboys tune, right?
- 1:14:18Speaker 3: That's right.
- 1:14:18Speaker 7: Okay. Okay.
- 1:14:19Speaker 9: So.
- 1:14:27Speaker 1: We're going to visit here with Head Coach Jeff Traylor
- 1:14:32Speaker 1: here in just a few moments. I think we're just
- 1:14:35Speaker 1: making sure that we've got our connection. all squared away
- 1:14:39Speaker 1: and ready to go here. Also, a reminder about when
- 1:14:45Speaker 1: we'll be able to bring you the contest on Saturday evening.
- 1:14:51Speaker 1: The game, I'm told, is actually going to have a
- 1:14:54Speaker 1: kickoff of 7.02 p.m.
- 1:14:56Speaker 3: So it.
- 1:14:58Speaker 1: Won't be like the Ohio State game, which is, you know,
- 1:15:01Speaker 1: listed as 6.30 and then it ended up being 6.50
- 1:15:05Speaker 1: on the kickoff. It was an hour and 20 minutes.
- 1:15:07Speaker 1: And we were told in advance it was going to
- 1:15:10Speaker 1: be $ 649, 000. So we were told it was going to
- 1:15:11Speaker 1: be $ 649, 000. So anyway, so that's– at least in this case,
- 1:15:19Speaker 1: it's going to– start right at 702 or the kickoff
- 1:15:26Speaker 1: will be. And that's in large measure because remember it's
- 1:15:30Speaker 1: an SEC network plus telecast. So that's why, and they
- 1:15:34Speaker 1: usually just get right down to the business instead of
- 1:15:36Speaker 1: it being the main event and that kind of thing
- 1:15:40Speaker 1: with ABC and ESPN. And so anyway, that's that's the
- 1:15:47Speaker 1: story about our coverage on Saturday will actually begin at
- 1:15:51Speaker 1: three o'clock on Saturday afternoon. And, uh, it'll, it'll begin
- 1:15:57Speaker 1: with the third and Longhorn podcast guys preview show. So, uh,
- 1:16:03Speaker 1: there's that then, uh, at four o'clock will be the
- 1:16:08Speaker 1: Longhorns game day program. That's from the Bevo Boulevard and
- 1:16:11Speaker 1: that's down in the, uh, Winship area. And, uh, the, uh,
- 1:16:17Speaker 1: And that'll be down there with Mike Hardball-Harge and also
- 1:16:22Speaker 1: Mark Henry and Jake Herman will all be there for that.
- 1:16:26Speaker 1: Do you have Eric Henry back this week?
- 1:16:28Speaker 6: I don't know.
- 1:16:29Speaker 2: I'll actually be out this week.
- 1:16:29Speaker 6: Oh, that's right.
- 1:16:30Speaker 3: You're out this week.
- 1:16:31Speaker 2: That's right. Cameron Parker will be stopping by.
- 1:16:33Speaker 3: That's right.
- 1:16:34Speaker 1: Absolutely. So anyway, so that's at 4 o'clock with that.
- 1:16:38Speaker 1: So anyway, and then, of course, the kickoff at 7.
- 1:16:41Speaker 1: All right. As we mentioned, here's Texas getting ready to
- 1:16:46Speaker 1: play UTSA, and it's always a privilege and a pleasure
- 1:16:52Speaker 1: and a lot of fun to visit with a friend,
- 1:16:54Speaker 1: a guy whose state championship games had the pleasure of
- 1:16:57Speaker 1: calling back when he was tearing it up at Gilmer,
- 1:17:01Speaker 1: of course, to Gilmer, Texas, native, and the head coach
- 1:17:04Speaker 1: of the UTSA Roadrunners, Jeff Traylor, joins us. Now, I
- 1:17:08Speaker 1: appreciate the time and you look rather serene this afternoon.
- 1:17:16Speaker 1: Is everything at peace given the fact that you have
- 1:17:20Speaker 1: a good football team and you're right in the belly
- 1:17:24Speaker 1: of the beast in terms of your schedule and getting
- 1:17:26Speaker 1: ready before you start American Conference play?
- 1:17:31Speaker 11: If you had just got through watching the horns rally
- 1:17:34Speaker 11: in the fourth quarter like that at DKR, how serene
- 1:17:38Speaker 11: would you be, Craig?
- 1:17:41Speaker 1: Listen, point taken. I understand. Let me get you to start.
- 1:17:46Speaker 1: with your team and that rally to win that game
- 1:17:50Speaker 1: in San Marcos. I had it on a big laptop
- 1:17:54Speaker 1: in the broadcast booth, and the two games, starting and finishing,
- 1:17:59Speaker 1: were overlapping, but I couldn't help but continuing to sneak
- 1:18:01Speaker 1: a peek and seeing how your guys rallied back. And
- 1:18:04Speaker 1: I also understand this, and I think you'd mentioned this
- 1:18:06Speaker 1: once before, and I know some of the players have,
- 1:18:09Speaker 1: that it means a lot in this matchup with Texas State,
- 1:18:12Speaker 1: the I-35 rivalry and all of that.
- 1:18:14Speaker 3: And I know that all.
- 1:18:14Speaker 1: Plays into it, but it was about also getting a
- 1:18:17Speaker 1: football victory and getting a 2-0. How about your review
- 1:18:19Speaker 1: overall of what you've seen of your guys in the
- 1:18:21Speaker 1: first two weeks and especially that turnaround and the comeback
- 1:18:23Speaker 1: and the win?
- 1:18:25Speaker 6: Yeah, I don't know how good we are. I don't
- 1:18:27Speaker 6: know if we're as talented as we have been.
- 1:18:28Speaker 11: We were intentional this portal window to get guys that
- 1:18:33Speaker 11: we knew very well, we had a relationship with. We
- 1:18:37Speaker 11: didn't chase talent as much as we have in the past.
- 1:18:40Speaker 11: We chased production on the field and character. So we're
- 1:18:44Speaker 11: not as big, we're not as fast, but we have
- 1:18:47Speaker 11: unbelievable team chemistry.
- 1:18:48Speaker 6: I think we were just grittier Saturday. We just lasted longer.
- 1:18:53Speaker 11: It felt like some of my older teams, I used
- 1:18:56Speaker 11: to coach those first four years.
- 1:18:59Speaker 6: We just hung in there. We were down 17 to
- 1:19:01Speaker 6: Saturday at halftime. No one blinked. All right.
- 1:19:05Speaker 11: All 78 that traveled were eyes on head coach.
- 1:19:08Speaker 6: I know that seems silly. We had great body language.
- 1:19:11Speaker 6: I told them we were getting the ball first. As
- 1:19:13Speaker 6: long as it was fourth and five, no matter where
- 1:19:15Speaker 6: it was, we were going to go for it. I
- 1:19:17Speaker 6: didn't care where it was.
- 1:19:19Speaker 11: And wouldn't you know, it'd be fourth and six on
- 1:19:22Speaker 11: about my minus 40 on the opening drive. And we
- 1:19:25Speaker 11: went ahead and went for it. And Owen made a
- 1:19:27Speaker 11: clutch throw. David Amador made a heck of a double pass.
- 1:19:33Speaker 11: They got the momentum going, and we outscored them 24-9
- 1:19:35Speaker 11: that quarter and had a touchdown.
- 1:19:37Speaker 1: Callback, so 31-9.
- 1:19:39Speaker 6: It was a good call on the callback, so 24-9.
- 1:19:45Speaker 1: You have talked about, Bill, and we've talked about your
- 1:19:50Speaker 1: 210 and triangle of toughness and things of that nature.
- 1:19:53Speaker 1: And it's in this day and age, in the ever-changing
- 1:19:57Speaker 1: landscape of college football, and I know you had some
- 1:20:00Speaker 1: of your best players that were kind of cherry-picked through
- 1:20:04Speaker 1: the portal and things of that nature. And it sounds
- 1:20:07Speaker 1: like that you were able to go back and, and
- 1:20:10Speaker 1: get some other guys coming in. It sounds like commitment
- 1:20:13Speaker 1: from the administration and the athletic department and things of
- 1:20:15Speaker 1: that nature. How important is it to have that type
- 1:20:19Speaker 1: of commitment that, that, uh, you've spoken of and others
- 1:20:22Speaker 1: have spoken of in the past in terms of not
- 1:20:24Speaker 1: only building a roster, but in this day and age,
- 1:20:26Speaker 1: maintaining a roster.
- 1:20:29Speaker 11: Well, y'all played against one of them, uh, Devin McEwen,
- 1:20:31Speaker 11: the receiver that started on the other side of Smith.
- 1:20:34Speaker 6: You know, he was a, I taught his mother, uh,
- 1:20:37Speaker 6: At Jacksonville, when I used to be a teacher and
- 1:20:39Speaker 6: a coach.
- 1:20:41Speaker 11: That's painful, right? But I'm thrilled for him. We have
- 1:20:45Speaker 11: upped it, but it's not to the level anywhere near
- 1:20:47Speaker 11: where you guys are. Like I say to everybody, everybody
- 1:20:51Speaker 11: wants to talk about Texas and Georgia and Ohio State.
- 1:20:53Speaker 11: We can't even talk about that. We've got to get
- 1:20:56Speaker 11: in the level of Tulane. We've got to get in
- 1:20:58Speaker 11: the level of South Florida, Memphis. We've got to conquer
- 1:21:01Speaker 11: our league first. As far as revenue sharing, fundraising.
- 1:21:04Speaker 6: We got to get there first.
- 1:21:08Speaker 11: If you can win the AAC and get invited to
- 1:21:10Speaker 11: the playoffs, then you can have the discussions about what's next, right?
- 1:21:14Speaker 6: We're the sixth largest city in the country.
- 1:21:16Speaker 11: We got a lot of eyes on our football team,
- 1:21:18Speaker 11: but winning is what gets that going.
- 1:21:21Speaker 1: So I.
- 1:21:23Speaker 6: Am grateful.
- 1:21:24Speaker 11: We have committed more, but we're far from reaching Tulane,
- 1:21:28Speaker 11: South Florida, Memphis, those guys. As far as that, but
- 1:21:33Speaker 11: I'm thrilled with my administration to move me closer.
- 1:21:35Speaker 6: It's a lot better than getting moved the other way.
- 1:21:38Speaker 6: We are moving in the right direction.
- 1:21:41Speaker 11: We knew when we got in the AAC, it moved
- 1:21:44Speaker 11: the goalposts on us quickly. But then when college football
- 1:21:49Speaker 11: changed so crazily, it really moved the goalposts on our
- 1:21:52Speaker 11: administration and me as well.
- 1:21:54Speaker 6: And we're just trying to keep up, Craig. We really are.
- 1:21:56Speaker 1: Well, and this is kind of along the lines of
- 1:21:58Speaker 1: the types of questions that I ask when we do
- 1:22:00Speaker 1: the panel discussion every year at coaching school. But does
- 1:22:04Speaker 1: the fact... that Tulane and James Madison both got in
- 1:22:07Speaker 1: and there were two G6s to get into the playoff.
- 1:22:11Speaker 1: And I understand the P4s get an automatic bid now,
- 1:22:14Speaker 1: and maybe that makes the quotient a little more difficult
- 1:22:17Speaker 1: to manage, but does the fact that it has happened
- 1:22:21Speaker 1: serve as proof that that can happen, that the G6s
- 1:22:25Speaker 1: can continue to state their case, winning the proper amount
- 1:22:29Speaker 1: of games and good scheduling and all those kinds of
- 1:22:31Speaker 1: things to have a shot to get into the playoff?
- 1:22:35Speaker 11: Well, it should here because we're the only team to
- 1:22:36Speaker 11: beat them. We beat them, you know, handily at home.
- 1:22:41Speaker 11: What you can do, you can jump up. But to
- 1:22:45Speaker 11: be consistent and play week in and week out, you
- 1:22:49Speaker 11: need real depth, which means you got to have, you know,
- 1:22:52Speaker 11: a deeper financial bucket to go to to get some backups.
- 1:22:57Speaker 6: You just can't have, you know, your starters. So. Yes,
- 1:23:01Speaker 6: it should, and it is.
- 1:23:02Speaker 11: My administration knows that we're not as far away because
- 1:23:06Speaker 11: we've done it, but we've got to invest more, and
- 1:23:09Speaker 11: we know that. But as far as compared to Texas
- 1:23:13Speaker 11: and Ohio State, we're so far away from that. When
- 1:23:16Speaker 11: y'all won't, or not y'all, when one of our kids
- 1:23:19Speaker 11: gets to the portal and he ends up, there's nothing
- 1:23:21Speaker 11: we can do about that.
- 1:23:21Speaker 6: That number's just too large. We've got to fend off
- 1:23:24Speaker 6: the guys at our conference.
- 1:23:27Speaker 3: Jeff Traylor's with us right now.
- 1:23:28Speaker 11: You.
- 1:23:32Speaker 1: Say this.
- 1:23:32Speaker 3: Even Matt Brown, I remember saying.
- 1:23:34Speaker 1: This to me one time and saying it, that coaches
- 1:23:37Speaker 1: love every one of their teams.
- 1:23:39Speaker 3: They love them.
- 1:23:40Speaker 1: They don't necessarily like every one of their teams for
- 1:23:44Speaker 1: various and sundry reasons. The impression that I've always gotten
- 1:23:48Speaker 1: from you, going all the way back to Gilmer, but
- 1:23:51Speaker 1: certainly with UTSA, is that not only do you love
- 1:23:54Speaker 1: all your teams, you try to find something to really
- 1:23:58Speaker 1: like about your group. It's safe to say you have
- 1:24:01Speaker 1: that same feeling about this group, not only that you
- 1:24:04Speaker 1: love them because you're around them and you work so
- 1:24:06Speaker 1: hard with them, but that there's genuine things to like
- 1:24:09Speaker 1: about this group.
- 1:24:10Speaker 11: Well, I've been a head coach 22 years, so the
- 1:24:13Speaker 11: way I look at it, I've had 22 children. What
- 1:24:16Speaker 11: I mean by that is I've got three personal children.
- 1:24:19Speaker 11: I've got Jordan, I've got Jake, I've got JC. I've
- 1:24:22Speaker 11: had 22 teams as a head coach. Each one of
- 1:24:26Speaker 11: my children, they're very easy to love. Not all of
- 1:24:31Speaker 11: them are easy to like at times. One of my
- 1:24:35Speaker 11: children is easier to like. I won't name which one.
- 1:24:37Speaker 11: One of my other children is less easy to like.
- 1:24:39Speaker 11: I won't name which one. And one of my children
- 1:24:42Speaker 11: is kind of just right in the middle. They're all different.
- 1:24:45Speaker 11: God made each one of them uniquely different. It's no
- 1:24:48Speaker 11: different than your teams. I've had 22 of them. This
- 1:24:52Speaker 11: team is easy to like. We don't have as many
- 1:24:55Speaker 11: great players as we've had in the past. We're not
- 1:24:57Speaker 11: as talented as we've been. But man, all the details
- 1:25:01Speaker 11: these guys have handled, all the little bitty things these
- 1:25:04Speaker 11: guys do. Being down 17-7 on the road at your
- 1:25:08Speaker 11: rival in that heat is tremendous stress, pressure. Owen McCowan
- 1:25:17Speaker 11: hadn't beaten them. They'd beaten us two.
- 1:25:18Speaker 6: Years in a row. The way they rallied did.
- 1:25:24Speaker 11: Not shock me because of the people they've been since
- 1:25:27Speaker 11: I started coaching them in January.
- 1:25:31Speaker 1: By the way, do your three biological children know which
- 1:25:34Speaker 1: one that you like more than the other and like
- 1:25:36Speaker 1: lesser or in the middle? Do they have an inkling
- 1:25:38Speaker 1: even though you haven't told them?
- 1:25:40Speaker 6: Well, it's a moving target. They each move up and
- 1:25:43Speaker 6: down at times. And I'm the bad cop always, and
- 1:25:48Speaker 6: my wife's always the good cop.
- 1:25:50Speaker 11: I just pray that Jordan's in Minnesota right now and
- 1:25:53Speaker 11: Jake's in Washington and JC's in Manhattan and that none
- 1:25:56Speaker 11: of them are listening to Craig Ways.
- 1:25:58Speaker 6: Radio right now i pray okay all.
- 1:26:01Speaker 1: Right with that i'll move forward then and ask you
- 1:26:04Speaker 1: about oh i'm gonna come first of all uh give
- 1:26:06Speaker 1: me a little history lesson i remember doing a uh
- 1:26:09Speaker 1: i want to say it was a state quarterfinal game
- 1:26:12Speaker 1: i may be wrong about that oh 1997 jacksonville texas
- 1:26:17Speaker 1: city there was an amazing like a 31 28 ball
- 1:26:20Speaker 1: game and i think luke was playing quarterback back then
- 1:26:22Speaker 1: were you on danny longstaff at that time.
- 1:26:25Speaker 11: That was actually Josh, Owen's father. That was 1997. I
- 1:26:29Speaker 11: was there from 93 to 2000. And it's the greatest
- 1:26:33Speaker 11: high school game I've ever been a part of as
- 1:26:34Speaker 11: an assistant. And Josh played as good as I've ever
- 1:26:37Speaker 11: seen him play. And it was a joy to be
- 1:26:40Speaker 11: on that team. And I hate it for Danny because
- 1:26:42Speaker 11: that was our chance to win a state championship for Danny.
- 1:26:45Speaker 11: Still one of the best games I think he's ever coached.
- 1:26:49Speaker 11: Rusty Dowling beat us at Texas City. They went on
- 1:26:51Speaker 11: to win state championship the next week.
- 1:26:53Speaker 6: Yeah.
- 1:26:54Speaker 1: The other thing that I remember about that, Jeff, is
- 1:26:57Speaker 1: that Texas City had a kicker kicked, I believe, about
- 1:26:59Speaker 1: a 51 or 53-yard field goal in the game, and
- 1:27:02Speaker 1: he kicked it toward the south end zone. And Kuda Robertson,
- 1:27:05Speaker 1: the old Southeast Texas radio legend who had done Huntsville's play-by-play,
- 1:27:09Speaker 1: was doing color for me on the statewide broadcast. And
- 1:27:13Speaker 1: he was dead serious when he said that, man, he
- 1:27:15Speaker 1: kicked that long enough it almost went to the walls unit.
- 1:27:18Speaker 1: Because apparently the Walls unit of the Texas State Prison
- 1:27:20Speaker 1: is not far beyond the fence of that north end
- 1:27:24Speaker 1: zone up that way.
- 1:27:25Speaker 3: It was something else.
- 1:27:26Speaker 11: I'll give you another memory from that game. I was
- 1:27:30Speaker 11: the special teams coordinator. They got down and had a
- 1:27:33Speaker 11: chip shot field goal to win the game. We had
- 1:27:36Speaker 11: a block that we knew was going to get there.
- 1:27:38Speaker 11: Josh's cousin, Timothy Treadwell, who's passed away since then, was
- 1:27:43Speaker 11: free right in front of the tee and was fixing
- 1:27:45Speaker 11: to block it. And that same great kicker He basically
- 1:27:49Speaker 11: hit like a sand wedge. He missed the ball, hit
- 1:27:52Speaker 11: the very bottom of the ball, and it went straight
- 1:27:55Speaker 11: up and just landed on the other side of the goalpost.
- 1:27:58Speaker 11: I was sure if he'd hit it pure, Timothy would
- 1:28:01Speaker 11: have blocked that thing. So I'm going to get over
- 1:28:03Speaker 11: it one day, Craig.
- 1:28:05Speaker 3: Hey, listen, you play.
- 1:28:06Speaker 1: I know you don't have much time to play a
- 1:28:08Speaker 1: lot of golf, but you play enough golf to know, obviously,
- 1:28:10Speaker 1: you're hitting behind the ball in the bunker, hitting the sand.
- 1:28:13Speaker 1: Would that be the safe way to say this on
- 1:28:15Speaker 1: that field turf that they did it?
- 1:28:18Speaker 6: There's no doubt. And isn't it sad?
- 1:28:20Speaker 11: Like, I can never remember to pick up my shoes
- 1:28:22Speaker 11: or where I put my keys or where I set
- 1:28:25Speaker 11: my glass, but I can remember a play from 1997
- 1:28:28Speaker 11: and the details of that.
- 1:28:29Speaker 6: What is wrong with us? We have issues, Craig.
- 1:28:31Speaker 1: I know we do.
- 1:28:32Speaker 3: I know we do.
- 1:28:33Speaker 1: All right, so let me pull it back on track
- 1:28:35Speaker 1: here while we've got a few more minutes.
- 1:28:37Speaker 3: I asked you about this, about Owen B. and John.
- 1:28:41Speaker 3: and Arch has been asked about being.
- 1:28:43Speaker 1: From a quarterback family and all that, and you've coached that.
- 1:28:47Speaker 1: You get that. Is there an intrinsic added element to
- 1:28:53Speaker 1: having– a quarterback son of a quarterback and a coach
- 1:28:58Speaker 1: and all that sort of stuff leading your offense?
- 1:29:01Speaker 3: Oh, yeah.
- 1:29:02Speaker 6: I mean, just silly things.
- 1:29:04Speaker 11: Like, for example, we had a playing team where he
- 1:29:07Speaker 11: got stepped on his toe and he went hopping like
- 1:29:10Speaker 11: he was, you know, dead.
- 1:29:12Speaker 6: And I was watching him as his grandfather.
- 1:29:16Speaker 1: I know well, Pat.
- 1:29:17Speaker 6: I know all of his dad and his uncles and
- 1:29:19Speaker 6: his whole family.
- 1:29:20Speaker 11: You know, limping is just not allowed in the mechanics.
- 1:29:24Speaker 11: He's hobbling around like he's dead. I videoed it and
- 1:29:29Speaker 11: I sent it to Josh and his grandfather. Obviously, I
- 1:29:34Speaker 11: included Owen on there.
- 1:29:36Speaker 6: It's just literally like, be tough.
- 1:29:38Speaker 11: Just good old-fashioned You know what they're getting told at
- 1:29:42Speaker 11: the house. You know what they're being told. You know
- 1:29:45Speaker 11: what they're, you know what I mean? Like, they're being told,
- 1:29:48Speaker 11: whatever the coach says, freaking do it. Be better. Find
- 1:29:51Speaker 11: a way to win the game. That's what the quarterbacks,
- 1:29:53Speaker 11: I mean, there's just none of this making a soft
- 1:29:56Speaker 11: bet when you come from the genetics that, you know,
- 1:30:00Speaker 11: Arch has come from or Owen's come from.
- 1:30:04Speaker 1: With regard to your running back spot, like I said,
- 1:30:09Speaker 1: one of the, recent state championship games. It was when
- 1:30:12Speaker 1: Will Henderson was in that backfield there. But Brandon, I
- 1:30:15Speaker 1: had the big run for you there, the 25-yard run
- 1:30:18Speaker 1: as well. How about your running back stable and what
- 1:30:20Speaker 1: you see and what you like out of that group?
- 1:30:23Speaker 6: They're good kids. They all support each other. Will goes first.
- 1:30:27Speaker 11: Uh, and Brandon comes in second and then AP has
- 1:30:30Speaker 11: a role in our team as well.
- 1:30:31Speaker 6: You know, he had a touchdown in the game as well.
- 1:30:34Speaker 6: So they're very supportive.
- 1:30:36Speaker 11: Um, you know, we, we're all about the two one
- 1:30:38Speaker 11: Oh triangle of toughness, uh, our culture, our brand. And
- 1:30:42Speaker 11: I know sort does a great job with that as well,
- 1:30:43Speaker 11: but we, we made our own individual triangles this year.
- 1:30:46Speaker 11: Like each kid has their own individual triangle. Um, their
- 1:30:49Speaker 11: four H's, you know, and I know Sark does this too,
- 1:30:52Speaker 11: the history, the hero, the highlight, and the hardships. They
- 1:30:54Speaker 11: have their why and why they play, their Bible verse,
- 1:30:59Speaker 11: their walk-up song, and their response mechanism to when things
- 1:31:03Speaker 11: go bad, all in their triangle. And all three of
- 1:31:07Speaker 11: those kids are really neat kids, and we allow each
- 1:31:09Speaker 11: player to talk to our team about their individual triangle,
- 1:31:13Speaker 11: just a way for us to get to know each
- 1:31:14Speaker 11: other better and quicker, because the portal, you know, we
- 1:31:16Speaker 11: had 40 this year, come to us in January, which
- 1:31:20Speaker 11: is a very high number for us personally. There are
- 1:31:22Speaker 11: many schools at 90 and 85, so I'm not complaining.
- 1:31:25Speaker 6: I'm still 40 is high. And it's been really cool.
- 1:31:28Speaker 11: But Will and Brandon and APs, they did three of
- 1:31:31Speaker 11: the best triangles. They're three of the best people on
- 1:31:33Speaker 11: our team.
- 1:31:34Speaker 1: I got to ask you this because it sounds like,
- 1:31:38Speaker 1: you know, Sark likes to say, you know, the reason
- 1:31:40Speaker 1: the dinosaurs still aren't around is because they didn't adapt.
- 1:31:43Speaker 1: And it sounds like you adapted because... I know where
- 1:31:48Speaker 1: you came from, and you didn't have a walk-up song
- 1:31:51Speaker 1: when you were playing Gilmer. And when you were coaching
- 1:31:54Speaker 1: at Gilmer, I don't know how much of that is,
- 1:31:56Speaker 1: but it sounds like part of the adjustment that you
- 1:31:59Speaker 1: made as a coach, not only from what you did
- 1:32:01Speaker 1: in high school, but especially at the college level, is
- 1:32:04Speaker 1: adapting to the collegiate player environment.
- 1:32:07Speaker 3: Does that make sense?
- 1:32:09Speaker 6: Yeah, it just had to be faster. I give the analogy,
- 1:32:12Speaker 6: like I'm from East Texas, right?
- 1:32:14Speaker 11: So to barbecue a brisket and ribs is like a
- 1:32:16Speaker 11: real prideful thing in East Texas. And, you know, a
- 1:32:20Speaker 11: guy like me, who's kind of a guy that I
- 1:32:22Speaker 11: keep my staff around for a long time, my players
- 1:32:24Speaker 11: have never left me. I've had the same coaches, same
- 1:32:27Speaker 11: players my whole life. And now, so I was kind
- 1:32:30Speaker 11: of a three-day brisket cooker. My barbecue was about a
- 1:32:33Speaker 11: three-day process. I was a slow cooker. And now I've
- 1:32:37Speaker 11: got to get my brisket to taste just as good,
- 1:32:39Speaker 11: but I got to cook it in a microwave.
- 1:32:41Speaker 6: So they're all one-year teams now, Craig.
- 1:32:44Speaker 11: So we really expedited that process. Everything we've done in August,
- 1:32:47Speaker 11: we do in January now. And the triangle is just
- 1:32:50Speaker 11: a really good idea we have for each player. And
- 1:32:53Speaker 11: we take it with us. It's in their lockers downstairs.
- 1:32:56Speaker 11: It'll come with us to Austin. We'll put the same
- 1:32:58Speaker 11: triangle up in y'all's lockers down there. It's just a
- 1:33:00Speaker 11: way to expedite all of us getting to know each other.
- 1:33:02Speaker 11: Really proud of our guys about how they've accepted that.
- 1:33:06Speaker 6: Not all hundred and.
- 1:33:07Speaker 11: 17 of them have bought into doing this with a beautiful,
- 1:33:11Speaker 11: beautiful smile on their face, but all 117 of them
- 1:33:13Speaker 11: do have their triangles done.
- 1:33:15Speaker 1: I know that. I realize this is a loaded question,
- 1:33:18Speaker 1: but when you look at the digital cut-ups, what really
- 1:33:23Speaker 1: crosses your mind when you look at Texas?
- 1:33:27Speaker 11: They've evaluated very well. They're really big. They're really strong.
- 1:33:32Speaker 11: They've went and got some really special pieces. Those tailbacks
- 1:33:35Speaker 11: and those receivers are just your tight ends, your line.
- 1:33:38Speaker 11: There's really nowhere I can say there's a weak spot. Obviously,
- 1:33:42Speaker 11: Arch has gotten better. So, Arch is going to play
- 1:33:44Speaker 11: callers in the country. Will has brought a level of toughness.
- 1:33:47Speaker 11: Jeff has done an always great job with the special
- 1:33:49Speaker 11: teams with you guys.
- 1:33:50Speaker 6: So, I have nothing but the utmost respect. I've worked there.
- 1:33:54Speaker 11: Twelve of my guys on my staff either played at
- 1:33:56Speaker 11: Texas or coached at Texas or graduated from Texas. I mean,
- 1:34:00Speaker 11: hear me, 12. So we've got a ton of respect.
- 1:34:03Speaker 11: We know about that place and what it's about. So
- 1:34:07Speaker 11: there's nothing I can say negative. And Sark and I
- 1:34:10Speaker 11: are good friends. I like Sark. So I'm rooting for
- 1:34:13Speaker 11: him except for this Saturday.
- 1:34:15Speaker 1: The final thing I have for you here is also
- 1:34:18Speaker 1: the impression that I've got. And really just watching your
- 1:34:21Speaker 1: team and what you've described is– Whatever the environment is,
- 1:34:27Speaker 1: they're not really allowing the moment to get too big
- 1:34:30Speaker 1: for them. So you have a lot of confidence that
- 1:34:33Speaker 1: they can walk into the stadium there on Saturday night
- 1:34:37Speaker 1: and there's 100,000 and all that other stuff going on
- 1:34:41Speaker 1: and still feel comfortable in the environment in the moment.
- 1:34:44Speaker 3: And it's a matter of just going out and executing
- 1:34:47Speaker 3: at this point.
- 1:34:47Speaker 1: Is that right?
- 1:34:48Speaker 11: Well, Texas State had an unbelievable home field advantage, but
- 1:34:51Speaker 11: what Chris Del Conte has done at DKR is on
- 1:34:54Speaker 11: another level. I mean, to say the least, it was
- 1:34:56Speaker 11: nowhere near that way when I was there. And he
- 1:34:59Speaker 11: is just, it is the most amazing home crowd. When
- 1:35:04Speaker 11: we played some great ones now, we played against some
- 1:35:06Speaker 11: really great teams in the SEC, but there's no place
- 1:35:09Speaker 11: like what y'all have done now. I don't know how
- 1:35:12Speaker 11: you get a team prepared for that. We're doing the
- 1:35:14Speaker 11: best we can, obviously, but it's, Y'all's music, when y'all
- 1:35:18Speaker 11: play it, how loud y'all play it, all the things
- 1:35:21Speaker 11: y'all do to distract the opponents, it's really on another level.
- 1:35:25Speaker 11: So much, much respect to the administration of the University
- 1:35:28Speaker 11: of Texas and what they've done behind the scenes.
- 1:35:30Speaker 6: And I hope my team can handle this.
- 1:35:32Speaker 11: This is the most daunting task we will have because
- 1:35:34Speaker 11: of the quality of coaching, the quality of the players,
- 1:35:37Speaker 11: and the quality.
- 1:35:37Speaker 6: Of the atmosphere.
- 1:35:39Speaker 1: Well, you're a quality individual. I always enjoy visiting with
- 1:35:41Speaker 1: you wherever we are, whether it's at coaching school or
- 1:35:45Speaker 1: someplace else or obviously in the stadium as well. And
- 1:35:49Speaker 1: I'm indebted to you for taking a few minutes to
- 1:35:51Speaker 1: join us today. I appreciate it, Jeff.
- 1:35:53Speaker 6: Craig, it's easy to be good to you.
- 1:35:55Speaker 11: You've been good to a lot of people for many,
- 1:35:57Speaker 11: many years, and you treated me the same many, many
- 1:36:01Speaker 11: years ago as you do this day, and I'm grateful
- 1:36:02Speaker 11: for our friendship, man.
- 1:36:03Speaker 6: God bless and birds up.
- 1:36:05Speaker 3: Thank you. See you Saturday. Yes, sir.
- 1:36:07Speaker 1: That's Jeff Traylor, head coach of the UTSA Roadrunners. We'll
- 1:36:10Speaker 1: have more coming up when we continue on 13 Under
- 1:36:12Speaker 1: the Zone.
- 1:36:14Speaker 3: What do we got here on a Texas Tuesday?
- 1:36:19Speaker 2: Why not another San Antonio native with Steve Earle? Good
- 1:36:23Speaker 2: old boy getting tough.
- 1:36:24Speaker 6: No doubt.
- 1:36:25Speaker 2: All that talk about toughness triangles.
- 1:36:27Speaker 1: Yeah, there you go. Our thanks again to Jeff Traylor,
- 1:36:29Speaker 1: head coach of the UTSA Roadrunners. If you missed any
- 1:36:31Speaker 1: of it, it's worth a listen. He's radio gold. And
- 1:36:38Speaker 1: he's like that. Let me tell you something. He's like
- 1:36:39Speaker 1: that on the banquet circuit. I'm here to tell you.
- 1:36:42Speaker 1: When he went into the Hall of Honor for the
- 1:36:46Speaker 1: Texas High School Coach Association, his speech was unforgettable. And
- 1:36:51Speaker 1: when we do the Division I FBS football coaches panel
- 1:36:56Speaker 1: discussion at coaching school every year, and it's all 13
- 1:36:59Speaker 1: Division I FBS coaches up on the stage, he's always
- 1:37:04Speaker 1: the star of the thing, and he does it so effortlessly.
- 1:37:06Speaker 1: And all the other coaches have told me, every single one,
- 1:37:09Speaker 1: the other 12 have also said, we can't wait to
- 1:37:11Speaker 1: hear Traylor because they know what he's going to do.
- 1:37:14Speaker 1: You know, he's just, the stories that he can spin
- 1:37:17Speaker 1: and tell and things like that. And that business about
- 1:37:19Speaker 1: the high school game, like I said, I was trying
- 1:37:21Speaker 1: to remember some of the details. And I remember a
- 1:37:23Speaker 1: lot of details about a lot of games, but clearly
- 1:37:25Speaker 1: he was on the side for Jacksonville. It was an
- 1:37:26Speaker 1: unforgettable playoff game with Texas City back there in the
- 1:37:29Speaker 1: late 90s with Owen's dad, Josh McCown, a quarterback. That's unbelievable.
- 1:37:33Speaker 1: The kicker missing the ball. and still pooching it through
- 1:37:36Speaker 1: because he had that strong a leg. And like I said,
- 1:37:38Speaker 1: I think he kicked it. I think he had a
- 1:37:40Speaker 1: 51 yard field goal in the game and, uh, and, and,
- 1:37:45Speaker 1: and with plenty to spare. And that's when Kuda Robertson said, man, that, that,
- 1:37:50Speaker 1: that almost traveled to the walls unit, which you could
- 1:37:53Speaker 1: see is not that far beyond the, uh, uh, beyond
- 1:37:55Speaker 1: the stadium fence out there at old Bauer stadium, which
- 1:37:59Speaker 1: has now been redone. They've, uh, they've rebuilt that stadium now, uh,
- 1:38:02Speaker 1: at Sam Houston. And, um, So they now have a
- 1:38:07Speaker 1: much nicer place to play there as they compete in
- 1:38:09Speaker 1: Conference USA. Here's a couple more comments from Arch Manning.
- 1:38:15Speaker 1: Asked about how quickly are he and his teammates able
- 1:38:20Speaker 1: to ratchet stuff down, bring the emotions down, and get
- 1:38:23Speaker 1: back to work and be ready to prepare properly for
- 1:38:26Speaker 1: this game on Saturday.
- 1:38:27Speaker 7: I think the sun comes up every morning and there's
- 1:38:29Speaker 7: a new day. and our coaches do a good job.
- 1:38:31Speaker 7: It kind of at practice, to be honest today, it
- 1:38:33Speaker 7: felt like we lost just like we're, we're back going.
- 1:38:38Speaker 3: So flush it, move on and keep it rolling.
- 1:38:43Speaker 1: Certainly one of the takeaways is the performance of the
- 1:38:45Speaker 1: two running backs, Hollywood Smothers and Raleigh Brown.
- 1:38:48Speaker 3: They're really good.
- 1:38:49Speaker 7: Hollywood, in the biggest moments, he's so calm and relaxed
- 1:38:52Speaker 7: and he's ready to go. And really, he can make
- 1:38:54Speaker 7: anything happen. So I'm really blessed to have those guys
- 1:38:58Speaker 7: in the backfield.
- 1:38:59Speaker 1: What seems to make Smothers so relaxed in a high-intensity environment?
- 1:39:04Speaker 7: He's just built for it, I think. Yeah, he's like
- 1:39:10Speaker 7: a veteran. It feels like he's like a 10-year-old pro guy.
- 1:39:13Speaker 3: He's just built for it.
- 1:39:15Speaker 1: Okay, and then Raleigh Brown, you know, he's got that
- 1:39:20Speaker 1: different kind of voice and the personality and his own nickname.
- 1:39:24Speaker 7: We all call him Band-Aid. I think that's his Instagram name,
- 1:39:28Speaker 7: Band-Aid Leak. Yeah, we all call him Band-Aid. I don't
- 1:39:30Speaker 7: know why he calls himself Band-Aid. But yeah, his voice,
- 1:39:34Speaker 7: when I first met him, definitely caught me off guard.
- 1:39:36Speaker 3: Okay. But he's hilarious.
- 1:39:39Speaker 1: And then he was also asked, was this the most
- 1:39:42Speaker 1: fun he's had in a football game?
- 1:39:45Speaker 3: I think that was the most fun ending to a
- 1:39:47Speaker 3: game I ever had. I did not know what to do.
- 1:39:49Speaker 3: I was just running around. Then John almost tackled me
- 1:39:52Speaker 3: trying to get me to do this interview.
- 1:39:54Speaker 1: That was at the end of the game there when
- 1:39:56Speaker 1: he was kind of running around. He didn't realize how
- 1:39:58Speaker 1: much he was running around. And then John Bianco had
- 1:40:00Speaker 1: to kind of corral him and get him over.
- 1:40:01Speaker 2: Miracle, he got him.
- 1:40:02Speaker 3: Yeah, yeah.
- 1:40:03Speaker 1: And then get him over to Laura Rutledge for the interview.
- 1:40:07Speaker 1: All right, we'll be back to wrap up today's edition
- 1:40:09Speaker 1: of the program on 1300 The Zone.
