- 0:00Speaker 1: A serial murderer is preying on young women, leaving a
- 0:03Speaker 1: single white rose with each victim. In an unnamed city,
- 0:08Speaker 1: Ginny Trowbridge learns that her police detective boyfriend, Terry Riley,
- 0:12Speaker 1: is under pressure to solve the case. Determined to help,
- 0:16Speaker 1: she volunteers to serve as bait. This is Suspense, The
- 0:20Speaker 1: White Rose Murders, Episode 6, first broadcast by CBS on
- 0:25Speaker 1: July 6, 1943, with Maureen O'Hara as Ginny. The script
- 0:31Speaker 1: is Robert Tallman's radio adaptation of Cornell Woolrich's story, The
- 0:36Speaker 1: Death Rose, directed by Ted Bliss and produced by William Spear.
- 0:40Speaker 1: And now, we return to the original broadcast.
- 0:47Speaker 2: Suspense.
- 0:56Speaker 3: This is The Man in Black.
- 0:58Speaker 4: Here again to introduce Columbia's program, Suspense. Our star this
- 1:04Speaker 4: evening is Miss Maureen O'Hara, whom you've seen rise to
- 1:08Speaker 4: stardom in Hollywood within the short space of a year.
- 1:13Speaker 4: Her performances in the 20th Century Fox production, How Green
- 1:17Speaker 4: Was My Valley, then more recently in The Immortal Sergeant,
- 1:22Speaker 4: and now currently in the RKO production, This Land Is Mine,
- 1:26Speaker 4: have given her an enviable place in the ranks of
- 1:29Speaker 4: America's new film favorites. Miss O'Hara makes her first appearance
- 1:35Speaker 4: on our suspense stage tonight as the heroine of A
- 1:39Speaker 4: Study in Homicidal Mania, The White Rose Murders by Cornell Woolrich,
- 1:46Speaker 4: which is tonight's tale of Suspense. If you have been
- 1:51Speaker 4: with us before, you will know that suspense is compounded
- 1:54Speaker 4: of mystery and suspicion and dangerous adventure. In this series
- 2:00Speaker 4: are tales calculated to intrigue you, to stir your nerves,
- 2:04Speaker 4: to offer you a precarious situation and then withhold the
- 2:08Speaker 4: solution until the last possible moment. And so it is
- 2:14Speaker 4: with the White Rose murders and the performance.
- 2:17Speaker 2: Of Maureen O'Hara.
- 2:19Speaker 4: We again hope to keep you in.
- 2:20Speaker 5: Suspense!
- 2:33Speaker 3: He stood there waiting.
- 2:35Speaker 4: He knew that presently they would come out of the
- 2:37Speaker 4: second-rate dance hall, out into the dimly lit street. He
- 2:42Speaker 4: listened a while. and smiled as the orchestra played that
- 2:45Speaker 4: tune inside. And then they came out, the two girls.
- 2:51Speaker 4: And still he waited, close enough to hear what they
- 2:54Speaker 4: were saying.
- 2:55Speaker 6: Well, I'll see you at the office tomorrow, Sally. Oh,
- 2:58Speaker 6: I don't know how I'll get up. It's after one o'clock.
- 3:03Speaker 6: Six hours sleep. Oh, I'll be dead tomorrow.
- 3:06Speaker 1: Me too.
- 3:08Speaker 2: Oh, gosh.
- 3:09Speaker 6: I gotta have at least eight hours or I'm no
- 3:11Speaker 6: good at all. I wish I had someone to walk
- 3:13Speaker 6: me to the bus. It's four long blocks. I'll walk
- 3:16Speaker 6: you down, Sally. Oh, don't bother. We go in different directions.
- 3:19Speaker 6: What's no trouble? Really, I don't mind. Really, it's not necessary.
- 3:30Speaker 4: In the narrow alley that divides the dance hall from
- 3:33Speaker 4: an ugly office building, he stood smiling. Just a little
- 3:38Speaker 4: inside the alley, he stood stiffly against the wall, his
- 3:41Speaker 4: head back, eyes closed, arms straight down, and in his
- 3:45Speaker 4: left hand, a white rose.
- 3:48Speaker 6: Well, all right then, Sally. Good night. Good night, Joan.
- 3:51Speaker 6: See you in the morning. Oh, I hope I don't
- 4:06Speaker 6: have to wait long for the bus.
- 4:10Speaker 7: Who are you?
- 4:12Speaker 6: Keep away. Keep away from me. Let me go.
- 4:16Speaker 3: Let me go. The girl is dead.
- 4:26Speaker 4: Tenderly, the figure straightens her hair and gently places the
- 4:30Speaker 4: limp body on the ground. Then he opens her clenched fist,
- 4:35Speaker 4: and carefully, so that the thorns will not bruise her flesh,
- 4:39Speaker 4: he places in her hand.
- 4:41Speaker 2: The white rosebud.
- 4:53Speaker 6: Pardon me, my good man. Is it true that you
- 4:55Speaker 6: are the famous detective Terrence Riley?
- 4:57Speaker 8: Huh?
- 4:58Speaker 2: Oh, Ginny. I didn't see you come in.
- 5:00Speaker 6: Well, now that I'm here, how about offering to buy
- 5:02Speaker 6: a cup of coffee for the girl you're going to marry?
- 5:04Speaker 6: You can never get up enough nerve to ask her.
- 5:06Speaker 2: Oh, it's no use, Ginny. I guess we better call
- 5:09Speaker 2: it quits. I'm just a dick on the homicide squad,
- 5:12Speaker 2: and that's all I'll ever be.
- 5:14Speaker 6: And I'm a rich debutante.
- 5:16Speaker 2: We don't belong together.
- 5:18Speaker 6: Oh, you've been reading too many of those romantic stories, Terry.
- 5:21Speaker 6: What is it this time? What's wrong?
- 5:24Speaker 2: They call him the White Rose Killer. He's got to
- 5:27Speaker 2: be caught. There's a general demotion coming on if he isn't,
- 5:30Speaker 2: and that's all I need to get back into uniform.
- 5:32Speaker 6: Oh, don't worry, darling. You always look good in blue.
- 5:35Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 5:37Speaker 2: Just to match the way I feel.
- 5:40Speaker 6: Tell me more about the White Rose Killer. What's he like?
- 5:43Speaker 2: That's the stumble. He could be anybody. No one's ever
- 5:47Speaker 2: seen him except the dead, and they don't talk about
- 5:50Speaker 2: it afterwards. Just slips out of the shadows and kills
- 5:53Speaker 2: and then slips back again.
- 5:55Speaker 6: How many has he murdered?
- 5:56Speaker 9: Four.
- 5:56Speaker 7: Four?
- 5:57Speaker 2: He's not through yet. It's going to be one of
- 6:00Speaker 2: those chain things if he's allowed to keep on.
- 6:02Speaker 6: Are you sure it's always the same one?
- 6:04Speaker 2: Yeah. That part of it we're sure of. The same touch.
- 6:07Speaker 2: The same way of operating every time.
- 6:10Speaker 6: How do you know that?
- 6:11Speaker 2: Well, it's a rose. A white rosebud. A death rose.
- 6:17Speaker 2: Puts it into each victim's hand after he kills her.
- 6:19Speaker 10: Her?
- 6:21Speaker 2: Yeah. It's always a woman. A young woman between 19
- 6:25Speaker 2: and 23.
- 6:27Speaker 6: What's behind it? Do you have any idea?
- 6:29Speaker 2: Well, I'm not sure. But here's what I figured out.
- 6:34Speaker 2: You know what a rose stands for. Symbolically, I mean.
- 6:38Speaker 6: Why, yes. It's the flower of love. The white rose,
- 6:43Speaker 6: the bud, has another meaning. Purity, loyalty, devotion. And especially
- 6:48Speaker 6: it stands for a young girl.
- 6:50Speaker 2: That's right. And that's about the way I see it.
- 6:53Speaker 6: So maybe it's a double cross. committed against our murderer
- 6:57Speaker 6: by some young girl whom he worshipped and who betrayed
- 6:59Speaker 6: his faith in her.
- 7:00Speaker 2: You ought to be a detective, not me.
- 7:02Speaker 6: Thanks, darling. I've got a very fine teacher.
- 7:05Speaker 2: Sweet. There's another thing. The murders were all committed near
- 7:10Speaker 2: places where there was music, dance halls, cabarets and the like.
- 7:15Speaker 2: There's a song that brings back the original shock that,
- 7:18Speaker 2: you know, gives him the final push over into the darkness.
- 7:22Speaker 2: As far as we can figure out, it's the beer
- 7:24Speaker 2: barrel polka.
- 7:25Speaker 6: Well, how does he commit the murder? Is it always
- 7:27Speaker 6: the same way?
- 7:28Speaker 2: Always. Strangulation between the hands. With the thumb into the
- 7:32Speaker 2: windpipe to keep his victims from crying out. But isn't
- 7:35Speaker 2: there anything else you know about him? No, that's why
- 7:38Speaker 2: it's so hopeless. He's insane, of course. But there's only
- 7:42Speaker 2: this one phase to his insanity. Probably perfectly normal in
- 7:46Speaker 2: appearance and behavior. You could pass him on the street
- 7:48Speaker 2: and even know it. Well, it's only when he sees
- 7:52Speaker 2: someone vaguely like the girl he loved and Here's that song.
- 7:56Speaker 2: The one defective wire in him is jangled and short circuit.
- 8:01Speaker 6: But, Terry, the flowers. Don't the flowers tell you? He
- 8:04Speaker 6: must get them somewhere, you could trace.
- 8:05Speaker 2: We don't know where he gets them. Maybe he steals
- 8:08Speaker 2: them or.
- 8:08Speaker 6: Terry, what if you were the one to get him?
- 8:12Speaker 2: Well, it would mean a citation and a promotion.
- 8:16Speaker 6: And then all the things that stand between us would disappear?
- 8:20Speaker 6: We could get married?
- 8:21Speaker 2: Well, the chances would be a lot better anyway. But
- 8:24Speaker 2: what chance have I? Everyone in the department has been
- 8:27Speaker 2: working their heads off for weeks, and they've all failed.
- 8:30Speaker 6: Uh-huh. Terry, what were the girls like, the ones he killed?
- 8:36Speaker 2: Well, as I told you, they were all between 19
- 8:39Speaker 2: and 23. Their heights were pretty much the same, too.
- 8:42Speaker 2: They were all tall girls, around 5 feet 6 or 7,
- 8:46Speaker 2: a little taller than you, and all dark-haired.
- 8:49Speaker 6: How did they wear their hair?
- 8:51Speaker 9: Why, they.
- 8:52Speaker 2: Say, what is this?
- 8:53Speaker 6: Oh, nothing, darling. Just interested. How did they wear their hair?
- 8:57Speaker 2: Well, from what I remember, they wore it sort of
- 9:00Speaker 2: loose and curly down the back.
- 9:02Speaker 6: I suppose each one had a resemblance to that long
- 9:05Speaker 6: dead love of his.
- 9:06Speaker 2: That's probably it. Well, anyway, that's how the record stands.
- 9:11Speaker 2: And we're all waiting for it to happen again.
- 9:13Speaker 6: I see. Terry, I'd like to go home now.
- 9:19Speaker 2: I shouldn't have told you all that stuff. I've given
- 9:21Speaker 2: you the creeps.
- 9:22Speaker 6: Oh, come on, Terry. Take me home.
- 9:38Speaker 4: Later, Jenny stands by the window in her room, looking out, thinking.
- 9:44Speaker 4: She doesn't move for a long time. Then suddenly, quickly,
- 9:49Speaker 4: she goes to her closet and begins to rummage through
- 9:53Speaker 4: her many pairs of shoes. Carefully, she picks one pair
- 9:57Speaker 4: with three-inch heels.
- 9:59Speaker 6: Five foot six. six or seven.
- 10:02Speaker 4: Then she walks quickly to the dresser, opens a drawer,
- 10:06Speaker 4: takes out a comb and starts redoing her hair.
- 10:09Speaker 6: Worn loose and curly down the back. Well, here we go.
- 10:17Speaker 2: Edward! Edward!
- 10:19Speaker 5: Yes, miss?
- 10:20Speaker 6: Is the car ready?
- 10:21Speaker 2: Yes, Miss Virginia. I've been waiting for you.
- 10:23Speaker 6: Let's go before Mother sees me.
- 10:25Speaker 2: Your mother's been looking for you, Miss.
- 10:27Speaker 6: I hope you didn't tell her.
- 10:28Speaker 2: No, Miss Virginia, I didn't. Good.
- 10:30Speaker 6: Come on, Edwards.
- 10:33Speaker 2: Where do you wish to go, Miss Virginia?
- 10:35Speaker 6: The Starlight Dance Hall on Groven Second Street.
- 10:38Speaker 2: The Starlight, Miss?
- 10:40Speaker 6: Yes, Edwards, that's the place.
- 10:42Speaker 11: I wouldn't go there unescorted if I were you, Miss.
- 10:44Speaker 11: It's one of the worst places in the city. It
- 10:46Speaker 11: has a very bad reputation.
- 10:48Speaker 6: The Starlight Dance.
- 10:49Speaker 9: Hall, Edwards.
- 10:52Speaker 2: Any good, miss?
- 10:53Speaker 10: Any good?
- 11:08Speaker 4: Ginny walks slowly around the low light of dance hall,
- 11:11Speaker 4: trying to make herself conspicuous. A tall figure leaning against
- 11:16Speaker 4: a pillar watches her intently as he idly smokes a cigarette.
- 11:21Speaker 4: He doesn't seem to belong there. His clothes don't have
- 11:25Speaker 4: the gnattiness of a dance lover. Jenny pauses not far
- 11:29Speaker 4: from him. Deliberately, he throws his cigarette on the floor,
- 11:34Speaker 4: steps on it, and slowly walks over to her.
- 11:43Speaker 2: Hello.
- 11:44Speaker 8: Oh.
- 11:45Speaker 11: Oh, hello.
- 11:46Speaker 2: You're not with anyone, are you?
- 11:48Speaker 6: Oh, no, I'm alone.
- 11:50Speaker 2: I thought so. I've been watching you all the time.
- 11:54Speaker 6: Have you?
- 11:55Speaker 2: I haven't seen you dance yet.
- 11:56Speaker 6: I don't know anyone here.
- 11:57Speaker 2: How about dancing with me, then?
- 12:00Speaker 6: All right.
- 12:01Speaker 3: Come on.
- 12:01Speaker 2: Let's go out on the floor.
- 12:04Speaker 6: Do you come here often?
- 12:05Speaker 4: No.
- 12:06Speaker 2: I never go to the same place twice.
- 12:08Speaker 6: You don't?
- 12:09Speaker 7: Why?
- 12:10Speaker 2: I'm always looking for new faces. I'm restless.
- 12:13Speaker 6: Do you find the faces you're looking for?
- 12:16Speaker 9: Listen.
- 12:18Speaker 2: Listen to that song. I like that. I like it
- 12:23Speaker 2: very much.
- 12:24Speaker 6: Yes, it is a nice song.
- 12:27Speaker 2: You know, you remind me of someone I used to know.
- 12:32Speaker 2: I'm trying to think who.
- 12:34Speaker 7: I do?
- 12:34Speaker 9: Yeah.
- 12:35Speaker 2: Do you mind if we stop dancing and go over
- 12:38Speaker 2: and get a drink?
- 12:39Speaker 6: No, let's go.
- 12:43Speaker 2: Oh, look. They sell flowers here.
- 12:46Speaker 6: Yes, I see.
- 12:47Speaker 2: I'll get you some. What kind would you like?
- 12:51Speaker 6: Oh, any kind. You pick it out.
- 12:54Speaker 2: All right. Let's see. There's something kind of innocent and
- 12:58Speaker 2: young about you. Different from most of the girls that
- 13:02Speaker 2: come here.
- 13:03Speaker 6: Can't we stay here a little longer?
- 13:04Speaker 2: It's intermission now. They won't play again for ten minutes.
- 13:08Speaker 2: Come on.
- 13:09Speaker 6: But I like it here. Let's stay a little while longer.
- 13:12Speaker 2: Well, then let's go down for some air. We can
- 13:14Speaker 2: come back in a few minutes. Come on.
- 13:17Speaker 9: But.
- 13:17Speaker 2: We'll be back before the music starts.
- 13:19Speaker 6: Oh, you're hurting my arm.
- 13:22Speaker 2: Am I? I'm sorry. Fresh air smells good, doesn't it?
- 13:40Speaker 6: It's so dark here. Let's go back.
- 13:44Speaker 2: You're not scared, are you? Oh, no, it's... Let's walk
- 13:48Speaker 2: down this alley and back.
- 13:50Speaker 6: Please.
- 13:51Speaker 2: Please. No, you don't.
- 13:52Speaker 10: Let me go.
- 13:54Speaker 2: Thanks. That's a lovely necklace, beautiful.
- 13:56Speaker 6: Why, you're just a cheap... Shut up. All you wanted
- 13:59Speaker 6: was my necklace.
- 13:59Speaker 2: So long, beautiful.
- 14:00Speaker 7: Look out. What's the matter?
- 14:03Speaker 2: Behind you, look. Holy... She's dead.
- 14:07Speaker 9: A girl.
- 14:08Speaker 2: Murdered.
- 14:11Speaker 6: With a white rosebud in her hand.
- 14:22Speaker 2: Well, Ginny, happened again last night. Just like the other times.
- 14:26Speaker 2: The girl strangled in an alley and the white rose
- 14:28Speaker 2: in her hand.
- 14:29Speaker 6: Any news of the killer?
- 14:30Speaker 11: No.
- 14:31Speaker 2: He might just as well float through the air for
- 14:33Speaker 2: all the trace he leaves.
- 14:35Speaker 6: He must have bought the flower upstairs in the dance hall.
- 14:37Speaker 6: He must have been there earlier, bought it and saved
- 14:39Speaker 6: it under.
- 14:40Speaker 2: No, there was only one rose sold up there all night.
- 14:42Speaker 2: And to a man who had a different girl with him.
- 14:44Speaker 2: We had the flower girl at... How did you know
- 14:48Speaker 2: that they sold flowers there? I didn't tell you. Well, I.
- 14:54Speaker 6: I must have read it somewhere.
- 14:55Speaker 2: You couldn't have. It wasn't in any of the papers.
- 14:58Speaker 2: No details were given, just the statement that an unidentified
- 15:02Speaker 2: body was found.
- 15:03Speaker 6: Well, I... Well, I just imagined that they'd sell flowers
- 15:08Speaker 6: in a place like that.
- 15:09Speaker 2: Well, I'm glad you don't go near those dance halls. Why,
- 15:13Speaker 2: with this nut running around loose.
- 15:14Speaker 6: Oh, don't bother about that. We'd better catch this killer.
- 15:18Speaker 6: And fast.
- 15:19Speaker 2: Where do you get this we stuff? To hear you talk,
- 15:22Speaker 2: you'd think that you were on the case, too.
- 15:25Speaker 6: Wouldn't you think so? To hear me talk?
- 15:40Speaker 4: Again, Jenny tours the low dives, hunting for the white
- 15:44Speaker 4: rose killer.
- 15:48Speaker 3: Her search carries her to the waterfront.
- 15:55Speaker 4: And as she walks past each dingy bar, she listens
- 15:59Speaker 4: to the jukebox music. A little after midnight... she passes
- 16:14Speaker 4: a dirty windowed saloon. The thin music catches her ear.
- 16:26Speaker 4: She pauses and listens... her eyes alive for some sign...
- 16:32Speaker 4: some indication of the person she's looking for. Then suddenly
- 16:37Speaker 4: her body becomes rigid... as her eyes fall upon a
- 16:40Speaker 4: figure huddled in the shadows.
- 16:43Speaker 6: Someone's watching me.
- 16:45Speaker 3: Slowly, she starts to walk up the street.
- 16:51Speaker 4: Behind her, the heavy tread of a man's footsteps keep
- 16:54Speaker 4: pace with hers. It's a quiet tread, unhurried but deliberate.
- 17:04Speaker 4: For several blocks, it keeps the exact distance.
- 17:10Speaker 3: Jenny starts to walk faster.
- 17:11Speaker 6: I've got to know if he's really following me.
- 17:14Speaker 3: The man quickens his pace. Jenny starts across the street.
- 17:21Speaker 3: The man follows.
- 17:22Speaker 2: She's sure now.
- 17:24Speaker 3: Sure that the man is following her.
- 17:25Speaker 2: She fumbles for something in her purse. Her hand closes
- 17:28Speaker 2: around a gun.
- 17:29Speaker 6: If he tries anything, I'll shoot.
- 17:36Speaker 2: You in any trouble, lady?
- 17:37Speaker 7: Oh, no, officer.
- 17:38Speaker 6: It's all right. You scared him away.
- 17:40Speaker 2: Scared who away?
- 17:42Speaker 6: Oh, just a man who wanted to bring me flowers.
- 17:44Speaker 6: That's all.
- 17:44Speaker 2: Well, he brought you one anyhow, lady.
- 17:47Speaker 7: What do you mean?
- 17:48Speaker 2: Right there on the ground, right by your feet. A
- 17:50Speaker 2: white rose. Coffee, Mabel.
- 18:00Speaker 6: Sure, coming right up. Here you are.
- 18:03Speaker 2: Terry.
- 18:05Speaker 6: Jerry.
- 18:05Speaker 2: Hello, Jenny. Sit down.
- 18:07Speaker 6: Thank you.
- 18:08Speaker 2: Say, what's the matter with you?
- 18:11Speaker 6: Look, darling, read the gossip column in this paper.
- 18:14Speaker 2: What daughter of a socially prominent family is that way
- 18:18Speaker 2: about a detective and waits for him outside the station
- 18:22Speaker 2: house in her limousine every night? Private chauffeur and all,
- 18:29Speaker 2: but Mama says no. That's not so funny.
- 18:33Speaker 6: Oh, they held a big family war council over me
- 18:36Speaker 6: just now. Indian powwow, feathered headdress and everything.
- 18:39Speaker 2: They did, huh? Well? What did they decide?
- 18:43Speaker 6: Oh, I was asked to give my word that I
- 18:45Speaker 6: wouldn't see you anymore. I refused, of course, so I
- 18:48Speaker 6: had to be exiled.
- 18:49Speaker 2: Where to?
- 18:50Speaker 6: Our summer home. It's just a few hours out of town,
- 18:53Speaker 6: but I'll be there all by myself. Just with Mrs. Crosby,
- 18:56Speaker 6: the housekeeper.
- 18:57Speaker 2: Oh, maybe they're right. Why don't you listen to them?
- 19:00Speaker 6: Are you on their side, too?
- 19:02Speaker 9: No.
- 19:05Speaker 2: When are you leaving?
- 19:06Speaker 7: Right away.
- 19:07Speaker 6: Edwards is driving me out. I just slipped out to
- 19:10Speaker 6: let you know. Here's the address and phone number of
- 19:13Speaker 6: the place in case you want to reach me. Don't
- 19:15Speaker 6: lose it.
- 19:16Speaker 2: I won't.
- 19:18Speaker 6: Well, what's new and exciting about the white rose killer?
- 19:21Speaker 2: Our famous lover of flowers? We're still trying to track
- 19:25Speaker 2: him down. I suppose I'll go looking for him at
- 19:29Speaker 2: the flower show that's just opened.
- 19:31Speaker 6: Oh, a flower show just opened?
- 19:33Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 19:33Speaker 4: Yeah.
- 19:35Speaker 6: Well, uh, goodbye now. I'll be seeing you.
- 19:39Speaker 10: What, uh.
- 19:50Speaker 6: Floor is the flower show, please?
- 19:51Speaker 2: Third floor, miss. Three, please. Third floor.
- 20:06Speaker 6: Where's the rose display, please?
- 20:08Speaker 2: To your left, over there. See where the man in
- 20:10Speaker 2: the gray coat is?
- 20:11Speaker 6: In the gray coat? Oh, yes, thank you. They are lovely,
- 20:22Speaker 6: aren't they?
- 20:23Speaker 2: Oh, you startled me.
- 20:25Speaker 6: I'm sorry. I was just admiring the roses.
- 20:28Speaker 8: Oh, yes, the nicest flowers here. I just can't keep
- 20:31Speaker 8: my eyes off them.
- 20:33Speaker 6: Yes, you can feel that way about some flowers.
- 20:35Speaker 2: That's the way I feel about... White roses.
- 20:38Speaker 6: Have you been here long?
- 20:40Speaker 7: I really don't know.
- 20:40Speaker 8: I suppose so. You see, I've come here every day
- 20:43Speaker 8: since the show opened. I like to be near the roses,
- 20:46Speaker 8: the white roses.
- 20:49Speaker 6: Those big ones are nice.
- 20:50Speaker 7: No, I like the little ones best, the little tightly
- 20:53Speaker 7: curled rosebud.
- 20:54Speaker 2: They're so little and innocent.
- 20:59Speaker 7: Oh, well, I really better be going. Are you going down?
- 21:02Speaker 3: Yes.
- 21:12Speaker 4: Down, please.
- 21:17Speaker 2: Here, miss.
- 21:18Speaker 3: I took a rose for you.
- 21:21Speaker 6: Thank you. It's lovely.
- 21:29Speaker 7: Would you care to have a drink with me?
- 21:31Speaker 6: Why, yes.
- 21:32Speaker 2: Thank you.
- 21:33Speaker 7: I know of a little place a block or two
- 21:34Speaker 7: down there. They have nice music.
- 21:35Speaker 2: We'll go there. All right.
- 21:37Speaker 6: Whatever you say.
- 21:44Speaker 2: This is it.
- 21:45Speaker 6: Where's the music?
- 21:46Speaker 7: A nickel in the jukebox, does it? Any special song
- 21:49Speaker 7: you'd like?
- 21:50Speaker 2: No.
- 21:51Speaker 6: Go ahead and pick one.
- 21:52Speaker 2: Okay.
- 21:56Speaker 5: There we are.
- 22:00Speaker 8: Oh, that's my favorite song.
- 22:06Speaker 7: Reminds me of a girl I used to know.
- 22:10Speaker 6: Oh, uh, excuse me, I, um... I want to powder
- 22:14Speaker 6: my nose. I'll be right back.
- 22:16Speaker 7: Do you mind?
- 22:17Speaker 2: No, of course not. 7th Police Precinct.
- 22:37Speaker 4: Sergeant Thomas speaking.
- 22:38Speaker 6: Hello. Is Terry Riley there?
- 22:41Speaker 1: Just a moment.
- 22:42Speaker 2: I'll see.
- 22:43Speaker 7: Please, hurry.
- 22:43Speaker 6: It's important.
- 22:46Speaker 2: Oh, sorry, miss. Terry Riley's not here just now. Oh.
- 22:51Speaker 6: Will you tell him that I can't keep that date
- 22:54Speaker 6: with him? Goodbye.
- 22:55Speaker 8: Do you always go to the phone booth when you
- 23:00Speaker 8: want a pat on your nose?
- 23:02Speaker 6: Why, I had to make a call.
- 23:06Speaker 4: Uh-huh.
- 23:07Speaker 2: I'm afraid I'll have to leave you. Oh, wait.
- 23:09Speaker 6: Let me come with you.
- 23:10Speaker 7: I'm sorry, miss, but I've got other things to do.
- 23:12Speaker 3: Oh.
- 23:14Speaker 7: What's the matter?
- 23:15Speaker 6: That car. Someone that knows me. Let's get away from here.
- 23:18Speaker 7: That's just what I'm going to do.
- 23:20Speaker 2: So long, lady.
- 23:21Speaker 3: Wait, wait.
- 23:22Speaker 6: Please don't go.
- 23:23Speaker 2: Miss Virginia. Miss Virginia. I'm sorry, Miss Virginia, but I
- 23:28Speaker 2: must speak to you for a minute.
- 23:30Speaker 9: Oh, Edwards.
- 23:31Speaker 6: What do you want?
- 23:31Speaker 2: I'm sorry, miss. You'd better come with me at once.
- 23:34Speaker 2: I've been looking for you everywhere. Your mother's been taken
- 23:36Speaker 2: seriously ill.
- 23:37Speaker 6: Mother?
- 23:38Speaker 2: Where is she?
- 23:39Speaker 11: She's out at the country place, miss. I drove her
- 23:41Speaker 11: there shortly before dinner. She wanted to pay you a
- 23:44Speaker 11: surprise visit.
- 23:45Speaker 2: Oh. I believe the shock of not finding you there
- 23:47Speaker 2: upset her, miss.
- 23:48Speaker 6: Is she very bad?
- 23:49Speaker 2: She had the doctor with her when I left. Mrs.
- 23:51Speaker 2: Crosby has gone away for the day. Your mother needs you, miss.
- 23:54Speaker 6: Well, let's go. Hurry, Edwards, please.
- 23:57Speaker 2: Right, miss.
- 24:07Speaker 6: Where is Mother Edwards?
- 24:08Speaker 2: In her room, Miss. You'd better hurry.
- 24:14Speaker 6: Mother?
- 24:15Speaker 1: Mother?
- 24:16Speaker 6: It's Ginny. Is the doctor in there with you?
- 24:20Speaker 2: Mother?
- 24:23Speaker 6: Why, there's no one here. The room's empty. The bed
- 24:27Speaker 6: hasn't been touched. Edwards, what are you doing?
- 24:34Speaker 2: Barely playing a song, miss. A favorite of mine.
- 24:38Speaker 7: A favorite?
- 24:39Speaker 2: Yes, Miss Virginia.
- 24:40Speaker 6: Where's Mother?
- 24:40Speaker 2: She's in the city, miss.
- 24:42Speaker 6: You lied to me.
- 24:43Speaker 2: I'm afraid I did, Miss Virginia.
- 24:47Speaker 6: Why are you locking the door?
- 24:48Speaker 2: You know why, Miss Virginia.
- 24:50Speaker 10: It.
- 24:51Speaker 6: it can't be. You are not the.
- 24:53Speaker 11: The White Rose Killer? But you see, I am, Miss Virginia.
- 24:57Speaker 11: Driving you and your family around day after day. Sitting
- 25:01Speaker 11: there right in front of you all the time. It
- 25:04Speaker 11: was amusing to watch you hunting for me. Hunting for
- 25:07Speaker 11: someone you saw several times a day.
- 25:10Speaker 2: But it can't be.
- 25:12Speaker 6: You're not insane.
- 25:13Speaker 2: Of course not. Who said I was?
- 25:16Speaker 6: Edwards, you know I'm not the girl who betrayed you.
- 25:19Speaker 2: Yes, I know that.
- 25:21Speaker 6: Well, then unlock the door and let me out. Please, Edwards.
- 25:24Speaker 2: I've killed five times. I've never regretted it. I'm going
- 25:28Speaker 2: to kill you, Miss Virginia.
- 25:30Speaker 6: Why, Edwards?
- 25:31Speaker 3: Why?
- 25:32Speaker 9: Because you've been so clever... Too clever. You made yourself
- 25:36Speaker 9: look like her, the girl who deceived me. I could
- 25:39Speaker 9: have killed you the day you first went out looking
- 25:41Speaker 9: for me. But I had to be careful.
- 25:43Speaker 2: Oh.
- 25:44Speaker 11: I almost caught you that night at the waterfront. The
- 25:47Speaker 11: night I dropped the white rose when that police car came.
- 25:50Speaker 3: Edward, I....
- 25:52Speaker 6: I've never done you any harm.
- 25:54Speaker 2: Your sweetheart, Terry. He loves you, doesn't he?
- 25:59Speaker 9: Yes.
- 25:59Speaker 2: That's good.
- 26:01Speaker 9: Because now you won't be able to deceive him like
- 26:04Speaker 9: my girl deceived me.
- 26:06Speaker 6: Keep away, Edward.
- 26:07Speaker 7: Keep away or I'll... You thought you'd use your gun, eh?
- 26:11Speaker 2: Well, don't think I was fool enough to overlook that.
- 26:15Speaker 2: I took your gun out of your purse.
- 26:17Speaker 6: It won't do you any good to kill me, Edward.
- 26:19Speaker 6: I didn't have anything to do with.
- 26:21Speaker 9: No, and you're not going to have a chance to
- 26:23Speaker 9: break another man's heart like she broke mine.
- 26:27Speaker 3: Did he?
- 26:28Speaker 6: Where are you?
- 26:29Speaker 1: Terry!
- 26:29Speaker 3: Terry!
- 26:30Speaker 7: It won't do you any good to call to him.
- 26:32Speaker 9: He can't get in here without breaking down the door.
- 26:35Speaker 6: Keep away from me.
- 26:36Speaker 7: Terry!
- 26:37Speaker 9: It'll be too late then, because I'm going to kill
- 26:40Speaker 9: you now.
- 26:40Speaker 10: Ginny!
- 26:42Speaker 3: Where are you?
- 26:42Speaker 9: Terry!
- 26:43Speaker 2: Let me get my hands on that pretty white throat.
- 26:46Speaker 6: Oh, keep away.
- 26:46Speaker 4: Keep away from me.
- 26:47Speaker 11: Terry!
- 26:48Speaker 6: Stop!
- 26:53Speaker 2: Ginny, are you all right?
- 26:56Speaker 6: Yes, Terry, I... I'm all right.
- 26:59Speaker 2: Take it easy. Here. Sit down.
- 27:02Speaker 6: Oh, Terry, I was so scared. There was nobody here
- 27:06Speaker 6: but Edwards and I.
- 27:08Speaker 5: How.
- 27:10Speaker 6: How did you know where I was?
- 27:11Speaker 2: Oh, it was simple. You were supposed to meet me
- 27:15Speaker 2: at the coffee shop. You never broke an appointment, and
- 27:19Speaker 2: when you didn't show up, I called the number you
- 27:21Speaker 2: gave me. You told me the housekeeper was here all
- 27:23Speaker 2: the time. And when there was no answer, I... Got
- 27:28Speaker 2: suspicious and came down. Besides, when I got a message
- 27:32Speaker 2: down at headquarters that you had to break a date
- 27:35Speaker 2: with me, I knew something was wrong. Are you sure
- 27:40Speaker 2: you're all right? Yes, I.
- 27:44Speaker 2: I'm, uh....
- 27:46Speaker 9: Terry! Look.
- 27:50Speaker 6: On the floor beside Edwards.
- 27:53Speaker 2: A white rose. Must have fallen out of his pocket.
- 27:58Speaker 6: That was meant for me. Oh, Terry, it's all crushed.
- 28:04Speaker 2: Yeah. Crushed and dead.
- 28:08Speaker 6: Just like the white rose killer.
- 28:31Speaker 4: And so closes The White Rose Murders, starring Maureen O'Hara.
- 28:36Speaker 4: Tonight's tale of....
- 28:39Speaker 3: Suspense.
- 28:42Speaker 4: This is your narrator, the man in black, who, speaking
- 28:46Speaker 4: for Columbia, hopes you have enjoyed Miss O'Hara's performance and
- 28:51Speaker 4: our play. Next week, because of a special broadcast of
- 29:07Speaker 4: the all-star baseball game, suspense will not be heard.
- 29:12Speaker 3: But again the following week, we will be back with.
- 29:14Speaker 4: Another play on this series and more of your Hollywood favorites.
- 29:21Speaker 4: The producer of these broadcasts is William Spear, who with

- 29:31Speaker 4: and composer, and Cornel Woolrich, the author, collaborated on tonight's Suspend.
- 29:48Speaker 2: This is CBS, the Columbia Broadcasting System.
