- 0:28Hey everybody, good morning from the porch.
- 0:30No, it's not raining today and there's no bad weather but we're
- 0:33doing something to show a point to my son.
- 0:37So the other day he's getting ready to go to work and he's out
- 0:43in the sun and of course I'm miss paranoid about having too
- 0:47much sun on him. And said to him, hey let me put
- 0:50your sunscreen on so it's on you evenly.
- 0:53And he was brushing his teeth at that time.
- 0:55And he agrees. And I grab his arm, his right
- 0:58arm, to put sunscreen on it. And he's like, I use that arm to
- 1:01brush my teeth. And I said, well, switch arms.
- 1:04And he goes, do you know how hard it is to do that with your
- 1:07left arm? And I said, yeah, actually, it's
- 1:10a whole exercise in helping your mind grow when you swap out your
- 1:15arms and do something different. He said, what do you mean?
- 1:18I said you have to change it up. You know, it's kind of like
- 1:21changing your pattern. It actually helps your brain
- 1:24stay very, very sharp. And as human beings, we are
- 1:27conditioned over and over to love consistency, which is fine,
- 1:31but it doesn't necessarily help keep your brain growing.
- 1:35It's just a pattern that you're in.
- 1:37But if you really want to scramble your brain and have it
- 1:39keep growing, you use the ability to switch things up and
- 1:43do things different. So he said to me, well, how
- 1:47often do you do things different because you do the same things
- 1:49all the time? And I looked at him and I was
- 1:51like, wow, he is so right. I absolutely do that.
- 1:55So trying to do things differently.
- 1:58I am on the porch just for today because I like being out there
- 2:03and recording it, but. It's to prove the point.
- 2:06And I then went off and I did my chores.
- 2:09I actually tried to clean up the kitchen using my left hand more
- 2:13than my right hand. And it is so hard and you have
- 2:16to stop and pause and think about it.
- 2:18But the process of this really got me thinking about how that
- 2:22is a great tool to force you into mindfulness.
- 2:25Like you have to be in the moment when you're not on
- 2:28autopilot. So this is such a good
- 2:30mindfulness exercise to practice.
- 2:33So me being out here this morning on the porch, walking
- 2:37around, it's totally different than being in the chicken coop.
- 2:40I'm seeing all the hummingbirds flying, I'm seeing the lighting
- 2:44on all of my plants out here and how different it looks as the
- 2:47sun comes up. I'm seeing the girls walk around
- 2:50the pond already because obviously I let them out.
- 2:53Marilyn and the babies are out and about.
- 2:55I mean, she's actually got them on a hike today and it's just a
- 2:59totally different view. And it's not easy to break your
- 3:03patterns. This part of it is fun, but
- 3:06going in and doing something different is.
- 3:09Especially when you're used to conditioning and having it done
- 3:12it the other way, it's not fun. So it's like trying the opposite
- 3:15helps you grow, it helps push you in a different spot now
- 3:19where this can be a lot of fun. Is when you trying to come up
- 3:24with creative things to change something you're working on to
- 3:28come up with a project like let's say I have a lot of
- 3:30clients right now that are working on their marketing
- 3:33because it's summer and it's a great time when things are a
- 3:36little bit slower to really pull in and get all the marketing
- 3:39done for the fall before it even needs to be done and you can
- 3:42start, you know, putting it out there early, be ahead of the
- 3:45game. It's kind of like doing
- 3:47Christmas shopping now, which obviously may not be a bad idea.
- 3:52You never know. You can catch some summer sales,
- 3:55get it all done. I have an aunt who has probably
- 3:58everything purchased and wrapped by now.
- 4:01Now that is not my pattern to do it.
- 4:02I'm usually way ahead of the game, but she's way, way ahead
- 4:06of the game and in the process of doing this.
- 4:10What you do is you start to open up your creativity and start
- 4:13thinking, oh, OK, well how have we always done it?
- 4:16OK, well what would be different?
- 4:17Do the research. Look and see.
- 4:19What are other people doing? You know, it.
- 4:21This exercise of breaking your patterns and doing something
- 4:24different doesn't just have to be physical.
- 4:27Physical is excellent though, because we get so trapped in our
- 4:30pattern of things. I can tell you, even walking my
- 4:34trail around the property, I have a way that I go.
- 4:39I stay, My husband laughs. Because I have worn a trail,
- 4:42like an actual trail, into the ground.
- 4:46And I stick to that trail and you can see that I stick to that
- 4:49trail, do the same thing over and over and over again.
- 4:53And here's what's crazy about it.
- 4:55I typically walk it in the same direction.
- 4:58I don't reverse it because it feels different going that way,
- 5:01and I don't know why. I just do it that way.
- 5:04So when my son pointed it out, I started walking in the opposite
- 5:08direction and I actually had to, like, think about it.
- 5:11I was like, oh, this feels weird.
- 5:12Oh, this feels weird. It doesn't matter if it's even
- 5:16if you're sitting down and you're having your coffee this
- 5:18morning, You know, stir the cup with the other hand, pour with
- 5:22the other hand, watch what happens and see how it fries
- 5:26your brain. Alright my friends, I hope you
- 5:28have a blessed opposite day and I will see you tomorrow.
- 5:32Bye. Play song.
