- 0:09Your podcast and YouTube blog covering the German
- 0:12startup scene with news, interviews and
- 0:16live events.
- 0:20Hello and welcome everybody to our monthly startup News
- 0:23covering the most important developments from the innovation and tech entrepreneurship
- 0:27scenes in Germany, Austria and Switzerland collectively known as
- 0:30GSA or DACH region. You're listening to top news
- 0:34for December 2025 released today on December 18th
- 0:38together with Chris, my man. Hey, how are you doing in New York?
- 0:42Hello, welcome from Wintry New York or hello from
- 0:45Wintry New York. We had the first snow here so we are doing great.
- 0:49You had the first snow and we don't even have snow in the
- 0:52forecast and that's pretty bad. What is good? As always,
- 0:56we split the news into two parts. Today's episode highlights the
- 1:00headline worthy stories shaping the dark ecosyste them this
- 1:04month. Our deep dive into the December landscapes including
- 1:08analysis, market shift and founder level sickness will Follow
- 1:12on Monday, December 22nd. Our regular news will be published
- 1:15again for January and February on the 26th of
- 1:19February and the following days. This is a unique break
- 1:23since I am on medical leave for all of January 2026.
- 1:26So we wrap up January and February together. Chris, I can see
- 1:30there will be a marathon recording session for us or maybe two.
- 1:35Talk about Germany here. If you're doing business, it will be very hard to
- 1:39get someone on the phone or any other email replied and out of
- 1:42office email between December 22nd and January 12th.
- 1:46Prepare accordingly. We wrap up with our
- 1:50annual FinTech review on December 23rd right before the Christmas
- 1:54break. To give you all a heads up of 2026.
- 1:58Our first episode will be January 13th.
- 2:01We'll write start with a double publication
- 2:05week and we have on the 15th
- 2:09our special interview featuring Polar Steps.
- 2:13Today's episode is recorded with Chris in New York and me, Joe from
- 2:16Frankfurt. Chris, how do you celebrate Christmas in New
- 2:20York City? Because I know you're not traveling back. Are
- 2:24you there for more? You're there for more than 10 years now, so
- 2:28you're almost an adopted New Yorker. How do you celebrate
- 2:31Christmas there? I assume Rockefeller Christmas tree any. Not
- 2:35anymore. So actually this weekend I was. I took a weekend off and
- 2:39was in Montauk and yesterday there was a Christmas
- 2:42musical Christmas music concert where actually people also
- 2:46sang Silent Night, Holy Night and I couldn't help it and
- 2:50slipped into the German verses and still
- 2:54and on the 24th I have actually an
- 2:58invitation from Latin American friends of mine who also
- 3:01celebrate Christmas and then I will probably go on
- 3:05a little trip with Jewish friends of mine who
- 3:09don't celebrate who do Hanukkah and yeah, and as you can
- 3:13see like here in the back for the people watching on YouTube, there's I have
- 3:16a plant with like one Christmas ornament on it. We got this at the
- 3:20general. German general. From the German general. Consul Chris,
- 3:24I, I do have a question. So you have Hanukkah, you
- 3:28have with Latin American friends, normal Christmas.
- 3:31I'm just waiting that you have some Orthodox friends where you can celebrate Christ
- 3:36then in January and then Kwanzaa. And I have to call my
- 3:39mom in the morning, my parents and yeah, busy,
- 3:43busy, busy. For our business,
- 3:47busy business audience, you want to dive into the highlights for our
- 3:50December edition, Chris? Yes, obviously. So, yeah, let's
- 3:54talk startups. Let's get things on the road.
- 3:58We now hinted at it, it's December. That means
- 4:01everyone's in a rush and the whole year is
- 4:05in this. Like, yeah, I want to get something done and turn the
- 4:09year around frenzy. And we also see
- 4:13that in the news that we will cover today, we see
- 4:16fewer small rounds, bigger conviction checks and a lot
- 4:20more talk about infrastructure and less than,
- 4:24less of our usual, like, growth at all costs.
- 4:28We have news about AI, deep tech and defense
- 4:32also a trend that we've seen in the last couple of months here still going
- 4:35on. And we also see that people are rediscovering
- 4:38unit economics as if this is something new.
- 4:42The Dach ecosystem looks a bit calmer on the surface.
- 4:46Underneath, it's a bit more reorganizing capital,
- 4:49compute and procurement are tightening into fewer and stronger lanes.
- 4:53And yeah, so we will talk today a bit about this
- 4:57holiday slowdown and about the signals
- 5:00that are contradictory to that. And
- 5:05we also have an overview about that and all of
- 5:09these ideas on our website, startupgrade
- 5:12IO. So first topic, this is
- 5:15basically what we linked. There is basically an overview of all the
- 5:19news coverage we've done in a year and then you can just take it
- 5:23from there. Yes, first topic,
- 5:27Europe is writing, let's say frontier adjacent
- 5:30AI checks again, again at US Velocity and
- 5:34not just for apps. We see that Black Forest Labs out of Fryberg locked
- 5:38a $300 million Series B at a $3.25 billion
- 5:42valuation. So we also see here that our coverage of
- 5:46unicorns does not stop anymore and not stop
- 5:49always at 1 billion. So we're now talking 3 billion
- 5:53valuations. And black Forest Labs is expl.
- 5:57And Black Forest Labs is explicitly pitching visual intelligence
- 6:01across perception, generation, memory and reasoning.
- 6:05Flywheel moment, you could say for Germany. It's attracting
- 6:09talent, computing partnerships and follow on capital. And it Also makes
- 6:13AI model platform something that you
- 6:16could hear in the dark region which also probably was not the case a couple
- 6:19of months ago. So
- 6:24more about this you can also see on our website where we
- 6:27write about the Europe AI supercluster. Second big topic
- 6:31dual use is no longer a narrative. It's a
- 6:35category with late stage gravity. We see that quantum
- 6:39systems pushed past a 3 billion euro
- 6:42valuation with 180 million euro Series C
- 6:46extension and reporting is framing that as one of
- 6:50Europe's one of the largest European dual use raises of
- 6:532025 meaning the market now prices defense grade
- 6:57aerial intelligence like a venture scale business. So I
- 7:01mean it's definitely one of the big through lines of the year to see that
- 7:04military and defense has gotten much much more traction
- 7:08a lot of it driven by the war in the Ukraine. Of course
- 7:12for founders this also does change the playbook a bit. Procurement
- 7:15alignment and real world performance are becoming defensibility
- 7:19and not enterprise sales overhead. And for invest we
- 7:23see the normalization of sovereign capability as a growth
- 7:26ceases Third team. You got a
- 7:30third sorry and you got a third theme for us.
- 7:34I got a third theme for you but Chris, I
- 7:38both of us I do believe
- 7:42they're in the process of quantum systems raising that and
- 7:45I do believe we'll hear over and over for the next year
- 7:50dual use there will be a lot Europe is rebuilding its
- 7:53venture plumbing and its compute stack at the same time
- 7:57because both are bottlenecks now Germany's
- 8:01HTTF and integrating DTCF
- 8:04is a structural move towards a seamless
- 8:08financing architecture from formation to scale up
- 8:11aimed straight at the series B cliff and capital intense
- 8:15deep tech for everybody who doesn't know them, they're two
- 8:19semi government backed entities. HTTF is
- 8:235050 in parallel. The AI
- 8:26gigafactory Talk Telecom plus Schwarz Schwartz Group
- 8:30is behind Lidl for example signals compute
- 8:33sovereignty is sliding from strategy decks into
- 8:37industrial projects while softbank circling switch
- 8:41shows the global infrastructure race is getting
- 8:44enthusiastic the irony after years of software eats
- 8:47the world we are back to power permitting and data
- 8:51center deciding who gets to ship meet
- 8:55Europe's most important seed investor is linked to
- 8:58HTTF net net. The dark market
- 9:02is concentrating around winners scaled AI platforms
- 9:05automation layers like N8N that turn AI into
- 9:09workflow real do use capability and energy
- 9:12compute infrastructure that makes the whole stack possible.
- 9:16In a minute we will walk through the top
- 9:21stories Black Forest Labs Quantum Systems NN
- 9:24HTTF DTCF overhaul energy capital
- 9:28formation and the computer supply land grab
- 9:31plus what it means for the startups funding in 2025
- 9:35as well. We roll into 2026. If you want the full
- 9:39back catalog context for how these themes build
- 9:43on all year, start here. There is the link to our
- 9:46startup ecosystem ultimate hub 2025 and if
- 9:50that wasn't enough, stick around. In a few days we'll drop the deep dive
- 9:54wrap up with even more startup and tech news to join
- 9:57plus the fintech news. So I think the holidays are
- 10:01safe for all our listeners. Guys
- 10:05before we dive in December just recently delivered some of the strongest
- 10:08signals we've seen all year. Mega rounds and AI 3
- 10:12billion plus dual use valuations and
- 10:16governments finally fixing the venture plumbing. If you care about the
- 10:19dach, startups are actually heading in 2026. Stay with us.
- 10:23We're just getting started and we will be back after a short ad break.
- 10:32Chris, you want to take over Black Forest Labs? Yeah,
- 10:36let's fully go now. So I was already hinting it at
- 10:39the beginning of the show. We see that Black Forest Forest
- 10:43Labs has a Series B funding in Germany
- 10:47which is just setting the benchmark for European frontier adjacent
- 10:51AI. The Freiburg based company behind Flux,
- 10:55announced a 300 million dollar series B
- 10:59that means a 3.2 billion 5 billion dollar post
- 11:03money valuation. The round positions Black Forest Labs alongside the
- 11:07small set of European AI scale stories that can
- 11:10finance model research and development, data pipelines and
- 11:14deployment at U S style philosophy while competing in
- 11:18the generative image and visual intelligence stack.
- 11:22Investors cited a path towards systems that unify
- 11:25perception generation, memory and reasoning language that maps
- 11:29cleanly to the current multimodal agent race.
- 11:33For DA founders and VCs, this funding is the clearest
- 11:37signal so far that Germany is not only shipping applied AI but also
- 11:40attracting late stage checks for core model platforms,
- 11:45hoping that it's becomes an
- 11:48ecosystem flywheel moment that will pull talent, compute
- 11:51partnerships and follow on capital to the D region.
- 11:55Lot of background there in our show. Notes.
- 11:59Quantum Systems Series C extension
- 12:03financing pushed Europe's dual use momentum into clear
- 12:06late stage territory. The German aerial data intelligence and
- 12:10UAV company raised 180 million euros in a Series
- 12:14C extension that was announced late November
- 12:172025, lifting their valuation above 3 billion dollar
- 12:213 billion and taking total 2025 funding
- 12:25cited by coverage to 340 million
- 12:28euros. Story here though isn't just simply about capital, it's
- 12:32also about normalization of defense grade drone and ISR capability
- 12:36as a venture scale category in Europe.
- 12:40Balderton is named as a lead in reporting and the company
- 12:44framing expansion across multi domain unmanned
- 12:47systems in Dum's Quantum system sits at the
- 12:50intersection of defense procurement, reality, sovereign
- 12:54capability and AI enabled sensing.
- 12:59So also here you already said it. For founders and
- 13:02investors, this is a signal that dual use has matured in the
- 13:06region. Yes, magic word, dual use. Keep that in
- 13:09mind. I'm sure we will hear it over the next few years quite frequently.
- 13:14N8N Series C funding is a rare combination of
- 13:18scale and strategic intent in European software.
- 13:21It's a company that sits in Berlin and works on
- 13:25workflow Automation. They announced $80 million
- 13:29Series C bringing total funding to
- 13:32$240 million and the valuation to $2.5 billion
- 13:36with Excel Accel cited as lead and
- 13:40Nvidia's N Ventures referenced among corporate
- 13:43participants. Beyond financing, we see here that the CEO
- 13:47had a preference for European listing, which
- 13:51also comes across as a noteworthy posture shift in a market that often
- 13:55defaults to US Paths. And in category terms,
- 13:58we see and benefits from the enterprise automation wave
- 14:02and the push to operationalize AI through orchestration connectors
- 14:06and local workflow design. This is a
- 14:10space that becomes more and more crowded and
- 14:13yeah, where we see that distribution and
- 14:17developer love is deciding about who wins and who loses.
- 14:21So from my side these are the two three big stories, but
- 14:25I want to see you now stumble through some more abbreviations.
- 14:29Yes and
- 14:32dtcf. So basically the story is the
- 14:36Germany's semi semi
- 14:39government PPP VC funds,
- 14:43High tech and Deep tech and Climate Fund announced
- 14:47plans to push strength into joint public private investment
- 14:50platform. They explicitly aim for
- 14:54seamless financing architecture from formation to scale up. They
- 14:57announced it in late November 2025. Coverage frames
- 15:01this as a strategic consolidation of equity access for key
- 15:05technologies. Again AI, semiconductors, energy,
- 15:08biotech, industrial transformation, reducing the
- 15:12notorious Series B cliff basically meaning if you have to
- 15:15raise serious B, you fall off a cliff here in Germany.
- 15:19For capital intense startups, this matters because it changes
- 15:23outcomes. Fewer forced early exit, more
- 15:26continuity between early state selection and growth of state support
- 15:30and a clearer national venture stack aligned with the Future Fund
- 15:34agenda. Future Fund, by the way, is the federal
- 15:38government entity. For founders and
- 15:41VCs in DACH, the signal is more coherent capital
- 15:45pathway and for international investors it's a sign Germany is
- 15:49organizing itself to keep deep tech winners scaling
- 15:53locally. Let's dive a little
- 15:56bit. We're basically mixing up two news here, energy and climate
- 16:01Emerald Horizon 790
- 16:04million plus valuation and Future Energy Ventures
- 16:08235 million fund market design
- 16:12tailwinds Emerald
- 16:15Horizon SMR financing discussion at
- 16:19790 million valuation confirmed by reporting and
- 16:23Future Energy Ventures closing a 235 million fund
- 16:27two together mark a serious month for European
- 16:30energy tech capital formation. The Emerald
- 16:33Horizon story positioning Austria's Graz as
- 16:37an unlikely but real node in the small modular
- 16:41reactor SMR narrative while
- 16:44FEVS 235 million close
- 16:48reports reported with the 205 million
- 16:52main fund plus 30 million Italian science fund signals
- 16:56expanding institutional appetite for digital energy transition,
- 17:00grid optimization and climate infrastructure software
- 17:04at the parallel regulatory tailwinds highlighted in our
- 17:07data set around electricity market design and the macro picture
- 17:11becomes coherent energies shifting from climate change
- 17:15vision to infrastructure built where funding
- 17:19structures, policy and industrial demand
- 17:23converge. For daft founders implication is clear. The biggest
- 17:26opportunity sit where regulation creates forced adaption
- 17:30and where capex capital expenses realities reward
- 17:33credible engineering and long term execution.
- 17:37And then there's another mix up. We talk about
- 17:41the the bigger implications of the telecom Swartz deal
- 17:45and Softbank's In Switch, a data
- 17:49center expansion in Europe is escalating for projects to
- 17:52industry policy with our sources pointing to two
- 17:56parallel signals, one around Deutsche Telecom and Schwarz Group,
- 17:59the company behind for example Lidl
- 18:03and Kaufland here in Germany. Ambitions in large scale compute and
- 18:07separate reporting on Softbank exploring Switch as a
- 18:11potential AI data center mega deal. According to
- 18:14IT Times. Additional coverage the scale logic,
- 18:18GPU capacity, power permitting and local location
- 18:22strategy turning compute access into a
- 18:25competitive advantage that will shape where AI
- 18:28startups can train, deploy and price services. For
- 18:32the founders, this is not abstract compute concentration
- 18:36changes, partnership dynamic procurement timelines
- 18:39and unit economics of inference
- 18:43heavy products for VCs. It reframes AI
- 18:47defensibility as partly an infrastructure question
- 18:50who can secure reliable capacity at predictable
- 18:54costs? The founders who will understand this early will
- 18:58negotiate from strength. The rest will pay the scarcity
- 19:01tax later. And Chris, that's it already
- 19:05for our highlights episode. We will be back
- 19:09with the Deep Dive pretty soon and it's a We
- 19:13made it in less than 20 minutes. It's amazing. Thanks man.
- 19:16Yeah, I mean good thing is it only takes a couple of days until we're
- 19:20back in your feeds. So stay tuned everybody. Stay tuned.
