- 1:32Speaker 5: and we're here filling in for Chip on Chip Howers
- 1:36Speaker 5: Sports Talk, making our way to Astros and Nationals. Who
- 1:40Speaker 5: you're right, The Nationals are forty seven and forty five,
- 1:43Speaker 5: I believe.
- 1:44Speaker 6: Yeah, if I had that in a little over five hundred,
- 1:47Speaker 6: so they already six and forty five.
- 1:49Speaker 5: Yeah, okay, so one game over, I knew they were
- 1:52Speaker 5: over five hundred. So they have a better record than
- 1:54Speaker 5: the Astros. Might have a better team than the Astros,
- 1:58Speaker 5: but they're just in a better league.
- 2:00Speaker 6: Yeah, you know what. I took my family every summer.
- 2:03Speaker 6: We didn't do it this summer because my son got married,
- 2:05Speaker 6: but every summer we go to a different city where
- 2:09Speaker 6: the Rangers are playing when we do the turisy things,
- 2:11Speaker 6: and my son and I usually catch all three games
- 2:13Speaker 6: and the rest of the family go too. So last
- 2:16Speaker 6: year we did Washington, d C. And I've been to
- 2:19Speaker 6: fourteen different stadiums, and National's Park is my least favorite.
- 2:23Speaker 5: Okay, that's what I've never been to.
- 2:25Speaker 6: It's just there's nothing to it. It's like there's no
- 2:28Speaker 6: kind of I don't know, distinctive things about it. But
- 2:32Speaker 6: they had like some of the original Senators players statues
- 2:37Speaker 6: out there, and of course, you know, the the second
- 2:40Speaker 6: version of the Senators became the Rangers, so there was
- 2:43Speaker 6: some kind of history that we could look at that
- 2:45Speaker 6: you know, had had some of that, and but yeah,
- 2:48Speaker 6: they're just in. It is in the city. It's it's
- 2:52Speaker 6: right next to some now that the restaurants area that
- 2:55Speaker 6: was kind of nice, but yeah, it's just right. It's
- 2:59Speaker 6: right in the city. The city is incredibly clean. I
- 3:03Speaker 6: don't know have you been Washington the c before. Okay,
- 3:05Speaker 6: so inside the city, you know, my my daughters were
- 3:09Speaker 6: always saying, I feel real safe. It's like very clean.
- 3:12Speaker 6: And you get too far outside of the city though,
- 3:16Speaker 6: just a word of advice is you don't drive. Yeah,
- 3:18Speaker 6: we didn't drive. We ubered everywhere.
- 3:22Speaker 7: Uh.
- 3:22Speaker 6: As a matter of fact, our Uber driver who took
- 3:25Speaker 6: us to our memb from the airport, it's like, hey, y'all,
- 3:28Speaker 6: don't do any walking around over here. Okay, so I
- 3:31Speaker 6: just call us. I'll be safe, locked the door. It's
- 3:34Speaker 6: you know, just don't don't do any walking around.
- 3:36Speaker 5: Yeah. My dad's actually from from DC.
- 3:39Speaker 6: Okay.
- 3:39Speaker 5: My sister currently lives just outside in Maryland. My brother
- 3:43Speaker 5: went to school. I've been. I've been many times.
- 3:46Speaker 6: And what was your favorite museum? Because I only did
- 3:49Speaker 6: like three or four of we did all monuments ended up.
- 3:54Speaker 6: I was interviewed by the British Broadcasting Channel because they
- 3:57Speaker 6: were doing this Trump was gonna spend all this money
- 4:00Speaker 6: on the fourth of July next year, which was this year, right,
- 4:04Speaker 6: So they asked me what I thought about that, and
- 4:07Speaker 6: they asked my daughter. So they actually saw the video
- 4:10Speaker 6: of people.
- 4:11Speaker 5: Did you make it on team?
- 4:13Speaker 6: We had a Ranger shirts on and you know we
- 4:15Speaker 6: made it on BBC.
- 4:17Speaker 5: I don't know anybody, and I've hit most of the Smithsonians.
- 4:21Speaker 5: I've enjoyed. I enjoyed plenty of stuff.
- 4:28Speaker 8: There.
- 4:28Speaker 6: We love the museum, it's fantastic. I love the Ford Museum.
- 4:33Speaker 6: I thought that was really great. And we did the
- 4:35Speaker 6: Holocaust Museum, which was incredible. I mean, you can do
- 4:38Speaker 6: that a lot of different cities. The Holocaust museum is
- 4:41Speaker 6: just so powerful. I mean, you can't walk out there,
- 4:46Speaker 6: you know, just thinking, man, humanity is can be so cruel,
- 4:52Speaker 6: and it's just.
- 4:53Speaker 5: I'm just walking to the monuments, going to going out
- 4:56Speaker 5: to Arlington and that. I mean, it's you know, there
- 5:00Speaker 5: are so many things you do with people all around,
- 5:03Speaker 5: and it's dead silent. Yeah.
- 5:06Speaker 6: Yeah, well, you know, even walking up to the Lincoln
- 5:10Speaker 6: Monument that's pretty steep up there. You know, it's like
- 5:13Speaker 6: the view up there is gorgeous because you can look
- 5:16Speaker 6: down the mall and it was, Yeah, it was kind
- 5:19Speaker 6: of breathtaking. I was really impressed with the city, not
- 5:22Speaker 6: impressed with the stadium. So that's where the Astros are
- 5:24Speaker 6: playing tonight. So maybe if there's any Astros fans out there,
- 5:28Speaker 6: they'll have some kind of different perspective. But I just thought, eh, whatever.
- 5:35Speaker 5: Besides you, because I've been to quite a few stadiums
- 5:38Speaker 5: up there. I've been to Baltimore, but never to the Nationals.
- 5:40Speaker 5: But the only person I know up here that's been
- 5:44Speaker 5: is strangely, mister Downs is that right, who doesn't like
- 5:48Speaker 5: baseball at all?
- 5:49Speaker 6: But we, without question, of all the fourteen that I've
- 5:53Speaker 6: been to, the prettiest Park is P and C and Pittsburgh, okay,
- 5:58Speaker 6: but my favorite part is rigly because of the fans
- 6:02Speaker 6: and the novel different. It's just different. We sat out there.
- 6:05Speaker 6: We went up there in twenty sixteen and the Rangers
- 6:08Speaker 6: were in first place and the Cubs were in first place.
- 6:10Speaker 6: Couse went on the World Series, and so my son
- 6:12Speaker 6: and I are sitting out in the bleachers and we
- 6:14Speaker 6: had better seats the other two days with my family,
- 6:18Speaker 6: but the seats out there were more fun because the
- 6:21Speaker 6: fans around us they're all Cubs fans, and they knew
- 6:24Speaker 6: all about the Rangers roster and they were like, you know,
- 6:27Speaker 6: we ended up the Rangers won the game, and they say, well,
- 6:31Speaker 6: hope to see you back here in October, and well
- 6:34Speaker 6: the Rangers didn't make it. But it was like that
- 6:35Speaker 6: was the whole friendly confine thing was really I liked Fenway,
- 6:41Speaker 6: but the fans nowhere else have I ever been to
- 6:45Speaker 6: that really knew the game. And maybe I was just
- 6:48Speaker 6: sitting around a good group, but it seemed like everybody
- 6:51Speaker 6: we were around knew the game, and not just the game,
- 6:55Speaker 6: but they knew something about the Rangers and they knew
- 6:58Speaker 6: something about you know, so many of the rotation players,
- 7:02Speaker 6: the Rangers, strikes, weaknesses, all these kind of things, and
- 7:04Speaker 6: who theyre go for the trade deadline is like, you
- 7:07Speaker 6: guys know this stuff.
- 7:09Speaker 5: I'm trying to think what my favorite ballpark is. Not
- 7:14Speaker 5: necessarily the ballpark itself for me, right, because I mean
- 7:19Speaker 5: I have ballparks or ballparks, but if you happen to
- 7:22Speaker 5: catch a good game, yep, and the atmosphere is good.
- 7:25Speaker 5: Saint Louis has been, I mean some pretty good games there,
- 7:28Speaker 5: and I thought I thought the atmosphere in their stadium
- 7:31Speaker 5: was pretty good.
- 7:33Speaker 6: Reds haven't been there. Great American Ballpark, Yeah, I haven't.
- 7:37Speaker 5: Been there, and that that I saw a pretty good
- 7:40Speaker 5: game there. That was, you know, and that was a
- 7:42Speaker 5: nice place.
- 7:43Speaker 9: You know.
- 7:44Speaker 5: The thing with major League Baseball stadiums is you're not
- 7:46Speaker 5: going to get into.
- 7:47Speaker 6: A dump, right, I mean you're not. No now that
- 7:51Speaker 6: Arlinston Stadium's going. Yeah.
- 7:53Speaker 5: Yeah, there were some, but you're not.
- 7:56Speaker 6: I mean yeah, like the old Three Rivers and those
- 7:59Speaker 6: kind of places, they're all gone. Yeah, they're all gone.
- 8:02Speaker 5: So and for the most part, you get into a smaller,
- 8:06Speaker 5: tight stadium. So it's all about the atmosphere to me,
- 8:08Speaker 5: because you have good concessions. At most major league places,
- 8:12Speaker 5: you've got good seats. You know, you're you know, it's
- 8:16Speaker 5: it's not the Astrodome, you know, back in the outfield
- 8:19Speaker 5: right where it was pretty dry and obviously not the
- 8:23Speaker 5: best place to go watch baseball.
- 8:25Speaker 6: Right right, Well, so Yankee Stadium was great. I remember
- 8:31Speaker 6: my son and I were there and the Rangers got
- 8:32Speaker 6: out to a big lead early on and we're sitting
- 8:34Speaker 6: next to this New York police officer, right, and he
- 8:38Speaker 6: just he we just had this great banter back and forth,
- 8:41Speaker 6: you know, and he's like, Yankee started coming back, and
- 8:44Speaker 6: he's like, you know, he started getting nervous. Their texts,
- 8:47Speaker 6: big text, big text. So I love the fan interaction, right,
- 8:51Speaker 6: especially when it's you know, cordial. I love the friendly banter, right,
- 8:55Speaker 6: and the red.
- 8:56Speaker 5: Baseball generally friendly anywhere you go.
- 8:59Speaker 6: The Red Sox guy who was next to me, he
- 9:00Speaker 6: had a prosthetic leg. It was a Red Sox prosthetic leg.
- 9:04Speaker 6: And these guys guys right and yeah he lost it
- 9:08Speaker 6: in Vietnam, right, And so I'm talking and thanking him
- 9:10Speaker 6: for his service, and he's drunk. Young people behind us
- 9:13Speaker 6: and they're like, you know, they're foul mouthing and everything
- 9:17Speaker 6: and cursing, and my daughters are there and the guy
- 9:20Speaker 6: stands up. He said, one more word out of you,
- 9:23Speaker 6: young men, one more curse word. I know the usher
- 9:26Speaker 6: right here. I've been coming to games here for twenty
- 9:28Speaker 6: seven years, and you'll be gone. And they didn't say
- 9:32Speaker 6: another word the rest of it. And you know, so
- 9:35Speaker 6: there's been no different experiences there. My wife and I
- 9:38Speaker 6: went to the Twins part what is it crog not
- 9:43Speaker 6: Kroger target field, target field, and it had a kind
- 9:48Speaker 6: of a cool little feel to it, but there was
- 9:52Speaker 6: nothing really memorable about it. But yeah, fourteen different ones,
- 9:59Speaker 6: and I p it sees my favorite. I highly advise
- 10:01Speaker 6: that take the take the walk across the Roberto Clemente Bridge.
- 10:06Speaker 6: It's just beautiful.
- 10:08Speaker 5: So the one one I would like to go to,
- 10:11Speaker 5: and I don't care where they play. I would like
- 10:15Speaker 5: to see the Yankees and Red Sox play each other.
- 10:18Speaker 6: Yeah, you know what, I got to get very many heated. Yeah,
- 10:24Speaker 6: I see the Yankees and Mets Yankee Stadium. When I
- 10:27Speaker 6: was up there one time with my wife or something else,
- 10:30Speaker 6: like we were we didn't get to see the Rangers
- 10:33Speaker 6: and Twins. I was just up there for something else.
- 10:35Speaker 6: And you know, if it's close, I'm gonna make it
- 10:38Speaker 6: to a ballpark. If it's the summertime, first thing I'm
- 10:40Speaker 6: gonna look at. It's like if I got a convention
- 10:42Speaker 6: I'm going to and it's in somewhere where there's a
- 10:45Speaker 6: major league city, I'm checking it out. Braids, I mean
- 10:48Speaker 6: the Braids that that was a cool stadium. I went
- 10:51Speaker 6: to Atlanta. My wife had a convention, so went there.
- 10:54Speaker 6: That has the most remarkable like Hall of Fame, to
- 10:59Speaker 6: the to the braves on the concourse. I mean it
- 11:03Speaker 6: is incredible. They had this massive Henry Air and statue
- 11:07Speaker 6: and you're just walking along the concourse and you you
- 11:11Speaker 6: come across as stomach. It's I could spend my whole
- 11:14Speaker 6: day there.
- 11:14Speaker 5: Did you go to the Varsity before the game?
- 11:17Speaker 6: I did not go to the Varsity.
- 11:19Speaker 5: Have you been to the Varsity?
- 11:20Speaker 6: No? I have not.
- 11:21Speaker 5: Okay, so it's if you've never been there. It's a
- 11:25Speaker 5: hot dog place, right, It's pretty much just chili dogs.
- 11:28Speaker 5: They start burgers, but everyone goes in there to get
- 11:30Speaker 5: chili dogs. And if you just picture this huge place,
- 11:34Speaker 5: you walk in and it's like counters forever and like
- 11:39Speaker 5: a concession stand that would have twenty five registers for
- 11:44Speaker 5: everybody to walk up and start ordering. Okay, so first
- 11:47Speaker 5: time I ever went there, and I wasn't We're traveling
- 11:49Speaker 5: through Atlanta, and I'm like, I want to go to
- 11:51Speaker 5: the original at Varsity and go check this place out.
- 11:55Speaker 5: I didn't check the schedule that the Braves were playing.
- 11:57Speaker 5: Oh oh my god, gosh, apparently that's the thing to do.
- 12:03Speaker 5: All these lines and you.
- 12:04Speaker 6: Know it's just by the way. That stay was way
- 12:06Speaker 6: far out there. I mean, it's it's out there.
- 12:09Speaker 5: M yeah, I guess. I mean, it's not that far
- 12:12Speaker 5: from downtown.
- 12:13Speaker 6: Well, I paid for the uber ride and it was
- 12:16Speaker 6: kind of expensive, yeah, I.
- 12:18Speaker 5: Mean getting from here to there in Atlanta. But anyway,
- 12:24Speaker 5: game we were there probably an hour hour and a
- 12:27Speaker 5: half before the game started. I had no idea. There's
- 12:30Speaker 5: thirty people in every one of these registers, just as
- 12:32Speaker 5: far as you could see. Just you're lined up in it.
- 12:36Speaker 5: All right, give me give me four chili dogs, right,
- 12:38Speaker 5: I mean, you know that's it, right, because they pretty
- 12:42Speaker 5: much have chili dogs, and hot dogs are chili dogs.
- 12:46Speaker 6: We were sitting we were sitting next to this young
- 12:49Speaker 6: couple with brave shirts. They're probably teenagers dating, right, great
- 12:52Speaker 6: experience there, and and uh oh yeah, and so I'm
- 12:56Speaker 6: he's got a brave shirt on it, and I'm telling
- 12:58Speaker 6: him about what a shame it is that, you know,
- 13:02Speaker 6: there's only one World Series pinning at that time, one
- 13:05Speaker 6: World Series flag flying over during this most dominant era
- 13:09Speaker 6: of the nineties when they were just in the playoffs
- 13:12Speaker 6: every single year, and it's like, he guess, I don't
- 13:16Speaker 6: remember that. I tell them about the pitchy staff and
- 13:19Speaker 6: he goes, I wasn't born back then. I was like, oh, man, well,
- 13:22Speaker 6: that pitching staff was remarkable. Uh, just unbelievable.
- 13:27Speaker 5: Yeah, I don't have we seen one that had a Maddox,
- 13:30Speaker 5: Glavin and Smoltz on it since.
- 13:31Speaker 6: Then, I don't know. I mean, the Astros had a
- 13:36Speaker 6: pretty stout one, you know, with Cole and Verlander, and
- 13:41Speaker 6: but I don't know who the third would have been.
- 13:45Speaker 6: But yeah, that's that was something else, you know, and
- 13:47Speaker 6: they just didn't just couldn't get over the hump. It's
- 13:50Speaker 6: like this eighty five bears, right, how many should they
- 13:53Speaker 6: have one? Four or five? How many did they win? One?
- 13:58Speaker 5: And that's that's sport. That's the nature of sports. Yeah,
- 14:01Speaker 5: and that's why we watch it, that's why we love it,
- 14:02Speaker 5: that's why it frustrates us. Well more.
- 14:05Speaker 6: Then there's the Patriots, who you know, like, surely not again, right,
- 14:09Speaker 6: please not again. So we just killed a good segment
- 14:14Speaker 6: that we do.
- 14:14Speaker 5: Yeah, we knocked it out, and it's about time that
- 14:18Speaker 5: we're gonna wrap up. Hand this thing off to the
- 14:20Speaker 5: oh before we go preview Astros Rangers next week.
- 14:25Speaker 6: It's gonna be a good series. I wish I could
- 14:28Speaker 6: see the pitching lineup Arrogatt. He pitches right before they
- 14:32Speaker 6: leave Washington, so the Rangers will miss him, and it
- 14:35Speaker 6: looks like to me, if everything remains on scheduled to
- 14:38Speaker 6: Grom will pitch the Sunday game against the Astros. So
- 14:43Speaker 6: it's always good to go into the All Star break
- 14:45Speaker 6: with a little momentum. And so whoever wins that series
- 14:49Speaker 6: is gonna have a little momentum going into it. It
- 14:51Speaker 6: kind of depends on what Houston does this week in
- 14:56Speaker 6: Washington and what the Rangers do at home against the Angels.
- 14:59Speaker 5: And Angel should be good serious for him.
- 15:01Speaker 6: Right, I hope, So, I hope so, because there's nothing
- 15:04Speaker 6: more frustrated losing to the team with the worst record.
- 15:08Speaker 6: I mean, it's just come on, getting swept. They got
- 15:10Speaker 6: swept out anah, I'm about.
- 15:12Speaker 5: To say, didn't they get smoked by the Angels already?
- 15:15Speaker 6: They got swept in Anaheim by the Angels and I
- 15:18Speaker 6: was on vacation and it almost ruined my vacation.
- 15:22Speaker 5: So Astros Rangers leading right into the All Star break
- 15:26Speaker 5: coming up next week, and that'll kind of define where
- 15:29Speaker 5: these two teams are. And unless it just is a split, right.
- 15:33Speaker 6: Yeah, it can't be a split, but yeah, it's the range.
- 15:37Speaker 6: I thought had turned it around on that road trip.
- 15:40Speaker 6: They went seven and three, and then they come home
- 15:42Speaker 6: and they lose two out three to Detroit. So it's baseball.
- 15:45Speaker 6: It's a long way ago.

- 20:07Speaker 17: This is a Nationals team that is very good offensively.
- 20:10Speaker 17: They lead the Majors and run score tied for second
- 20:13Speaker 17: in the Majors and home runs coming into play today.
- 20:15Speaker 17: But they also allow a lot of runs as well
- 20:19Speaker 17: as they're twenty fifth out of the thirty big league

- 20:23Speaker 17: be interesting to see how this series plays out. But
- 20:26Speaker 17: it feels like if you're going to beat the Nationals,
- 20:28Speaker 17: you certainly have to be able to put some runs
- 20:29Speaker 17: on the board.
- 20:30Speaker 13: You know, they're an interesting team.
- 20:31Speaker 18: We saw them a lot in spring training and we're

- 20:41Speaker 18: At the same time, and it's interesting too that they're
- 20:44Speaker 18: so young, but they have some experience. Their average age
- 20:46Speaker 18: in their lineup in today's lineup of those nine players
- 20:49Speaker 18: is twenty five. Yet they have experienced a lot of
- 20:53Speaker 18: these guys with two or three years as big leaguers,
- 20:55Speaker 18: so they're able to make adjustments at the plate at

- 22:50Speaker 23: I mean that was Anybody that appreciates athleticism can look
- 22:53Speaker 23: at that and so, okay, that was amazing. Now what
- 22:55Speaker 23: I can't get into is, you know, the ninety minutes
- 22:58Speaker 23: of jumping up and trying to hit with your head.
- 23:00Speaker 23: Nobody's scoring and things like that.
- 23:02Speaker 8: Yeah, how Penius.
- 23:03Speaker 23: It's kind of like the one NHL game I ever

- 23:38Speaker 17: Get off to a much better start this year than
- 23:40Speaker 17: he did last year and now in his second year
- 23:42Speaker 17: with the Astros, But it'd been in a little bit
- 23:44Speaker 17: of a lull. Had the big home run in Detroit,
- 23:46Speaker 17: had the big game there, but uh, you know, had
- 23:48Speaker 17: been in a little bit of a lull and a
- 23:49Speaker 17: lot of times when you see hitters struggling, when they
- 23:51Speaker 17: when they kind of get it going, it's when they
- 23:53Speaker 17: take the ball the other way. So you see that
- 23:55Speaker 17: home run yesterday going to the opposite field to help
- 23:58Speaker 17: you win that game against a really good Raised team,
- 24:00Speaker 17: that obviously had to be a pleasant sight.
- 24:03Speaker 9: Yeah, he is starting to move the ball around and
- 24:06Speaker 9: starting to use more in the middle of the field
- 24:08Speaker 9: like any Like any player who plays every day, there's
- 24:11Speaker 9: going to be some high and lows, and that's part
- 24:13Speaker 9: of the game. But I like the way he's continued
- 24:15Speaker 9: to work and he understands that when he's going well,
- 24:18Speaker 9: he's got to use more than the middle of the field.
- 24:20Speaker 9: And that was what happened yesterday, you know, hitting the
- 24:23Speaker 9: home run a big spot. Alpo just tells you that
- 24:26Speaker 9: he's starting to pick up traction again.
- 24:28Speaker 17: Five straight seasons with twenty or more home runs. I
- 24:30Speaker 17: mean that just as a testament to what he's been
- 24:33Speaker 17: able to do. Good health, all of those.
- 24:35Speaker 9: Things, durability obviously, and consistency and in performance, but also
- 24:41Speaker 9: work ethic, tastes, cook care of himself. He did in
- 24:45Speaker 9: the National League, you know, in the league, doesn't matter,
- 24:47Speaker 9: but he's he's doing in a different league, which he
- 24:50Speaker 9: tells you how good of a hitter he is. And
- 24:54Speaker 9: that's not forget how good he is with the glove
- 24:56Speaker 9: consistency also playing you know, go glove defense. It's something
- 25:01Speaker 9: that we value and he's been He's been really solid
- 25:04Speaker 9: on both sides of the ball.
- 25:05Speaker 17: You can talk about consistency, and that's what we've seen
- 25:07Speaker 17: with with Peter Lambert since he's been up in the
- 25:09Speaker 17: big leagues with the Astros. Got another win yesterday, you know,
- 25:13Speaker 17: five and two third scoreless innings, and I mean it
- 25:15Speaker 17: just seems like every time out you're you're able to
- 25:17Speaker 17: count on him not only to give you quality but
- 25:21Speaker 17: also quantity, consistently pitching into the sixth inning and getting
- 25:24Speaker 17: deep in the games.
- 25:25Speaker 9: Yeah, he does. He throws a ton of strikes. He
- 25:27Speaker 9: mixes all his pitches. He's not afraid to challenge guys
- 25:32Speaker 9: and use his defense, so he's you know, contact.
- 25:35Speaker 6: For him, it's.
- 25:36Speaker 9: Something that he he don't mind, right if he needs
- 25:39Speaker 9: a ground ball, he knows how to get one. But
- 25:41Speaker 9: for me, it's it's been how consistent he is in
- 25:43Speaker 9: the strike zone. He challenged hitter, he's a bulldog, got there.
- 25:47Speaker 9: So he's been he's been really good for us. He's
- 25:49Speaker 9: been someone that has been able to you know, helped
- 25:52Speaker 9: us during injuries and he's been able to remain in
- 25:55Speaker 9: that rotation because of his performance.
- 25:57Speaker 17: And also over the weekend, we learned that you're at
- 26:00Speaker 17: on Alvarez is going to start for the American League
- 26:02Speaker 17: as a designated hitter in the All Star Game coming
- 26:05Speaker 17: up a week from tomorrow, And obviously no surprise there.
- 26:08Speaker 17: Uh but you know, sometimes people talk about, you know,
- 26:10Speaker 17: fan voting and how it's a popularity contest. But with
- 26:13Speaker 17: with yourt On, I mean, he's clearly been the i
- 26:15Speaker 17: mean not just the best d h you could argue
- 26:17Speaker 17: maybe the best offensive player in the American League this year.
- 26:19Speaker 13: This is this is not popularity.
- 26:21Speaker 9: This is not popularity. He's he's done it straight up,
- 26:24Speaker 9: you know, straight up doing damage. And he's earned this
- 26:27Speaker 9: this the right to be the starting d H and
- 26:31Speaker 9: he's he's you know, obviously MVP talk is very something
- 26:37Speaker 9: that he's very deserving. But he's been he's been a
- 26:41Speaker 9: pillar for us, for our offense and for our team.
- 26:43Speaker 17: Made a roster move today with Rainnel Delgado getting option
- 26:46Speaker 17: Brandon Shoemake coming off the i L after he missed
- 26:49Speaker 17: about a month and we saw some good things with
- 26:51Speaker 17: you make both offensively and defensively.
- 26:53Speaker 13: But before he went down.
- 26:54Speaker 9: Yeah, yeah, he you know, puts the battle the ball,
- 26:58Speaker 9: really good defender, also provide some speed. So happy to
- 27:02Speaker 9: have him back. You know, he was playing really well
- 27:05Speaker 9: before the injury, and you know, hopefully we could get
- 27:07Speaker 9: that bat, you know, the back going and hit some
- 27:09Speaker 9: balls in the gap.
- 27:10Speaker 13: He drove some ball before he got hurt.
- 27:13Speaker 9: But is just kind of like the some of that
- 27:15Speaker 9: dynamic that he brings in the energy he brings, so
- 27:17Speaker 9: hopefully he sparked some of that today in our game.

- 32:46Speaker 17: ball in play, doesn't strike out a lot. It certainly
- 32:49Speaker 17: poses a unique challenge in today's game for pittures.
- 32:52Speaker 8: Isn't it.
- 32:53Speaker 6: Yeah, definitely.
- 32:53Speaker 29: And then they've got the you know, their top three
- 32:56Speaker 29: hitters in the lineup to do some damage, and everybody
- 32:58Speaker 29: else sends put together some pretty good at bats. So yeah,
- 33:01Speaker 29: it was definitely challenging.
- 33:02Speaker 6: Peter.
- 33:03Speaker 18: You stayed pretty aggressive against Yondy dia as one of
- 33:05Speaker 18: the best hitters in baseball, but a lot of fastballs
- 33:08Speaker 18: in on him.
- 33:09Speaker 22: Yeah.
- 33:09Speaker 29: Yeah, we were having success with the fastball in, so
- 33:12Speaker 29: we kept going to it.
- 33:13Speaker 18: And with jord On Alvarez on your team, you guys,
- 33:16Speaker 18: with the big win yesterday's ball game momentum coming into today,
- 33:21Speaker 18: do you guys marvel at starting pitchers just sitting over
- 33:24Speaker 18: there and.
- 33:24Speaker 13: Said, oh, here we go again.
- 33:26Speaker 29: Yeah, dude, every time he comes into the dish, we're
- 33:28Speaker 29: just there like, what's he gonna do now?
- 33:30Speaker 6: And he never disappoints, that's for sure.
- 33:32Speaker 29: Yesterday's game was crazy, and I'm glad and I can
- 33:36Speaker 29: probably speak for all the pictures that we're glad that
- 33:38Speaker 29: he's on our team.
- 33:39Speaker 18: Hey, do you have a different impression of jord On
- 33:42Speaker 18: when you were playing for the Rockies against him and
- 33:44Speaker 18: now that you're his teammate.
- 33:47Speaker 29: I mean, like I said, it's not a fun at
- 33:50Speaker 29: bat out there as a pitcher. So I'm super super glad.
- 33:53Speaker 13: To be on his team.
- 33:54Speaker 29: Yea, And yeah, I mean just watching it on a
- 33:56Speaker 29: daily basis is pretty cool. He's dang get hitter and
- 34:02Speaker 29: he's been having a heck of a year labor.
- 34:04Speaker 18: With his seventh win of this season, the Astros win
- 34:06Speaker 18: that series against the Race is.
- 34:08Speaker 13: The first of three with the Washington Nationals. Will have

- 44:39Speaker 13: Let's get on the play by play.
- 44:40Speaker 17: Here's Robert, thank you, Steve, waiting for the Nationals to
- 44:45Speaker 17: take the field for the start of this three game
- 44:48Speaker 17: series beginning of a six game road trip for the Astros.
- 44:51Speaker 17: They'll play three night games here in d C and
- 44:53Speaker 17: then have an off day on Thursday before a three
- 44:56Speaker 17: game series against the Texas Rangers Friday, Saturday, and Sunday,
- 45:00Speaker 17: and that certainly could wind up being a pretty big series.
- 45:02Speaker 17: The Astros just a game behind the Rangers for that
- 45:04Speaker 17: final wildcard spot, two and a half games behind Seattle
- 45:08Speaker 17: for first place in the AL West. Nationals now take
- 45:12Speaker 17: the field and Miles Michaelis making his way to the
- 45:14Speaker 17: mound for Washington. Michaelis is two and seven with a
- 45:17Speaker 17: five point four to four ERA and eighteen game seven starts,
- 45:21Speaker 17: eighty four in the third innings, ninety two hit, seventeen walks,
- 45:24Speaker 17: forty seven strikeouts, lead bating two seventy five against the
- 45:28Speaker 17: thirty seven year old from Jupiter, Florida, lost his last
- 45:30Speaker 17: start last Monday in Boston, when he gave uIP six runs,
- 45:34Speaker 17: but did go seven innings in that ball game. He
- 45:37Speaker 17: had followed an opener in his previous eight outings before
- 45:41Speaker 17: that game last Monday. Is all of his relief appearances
- 45:44Speaker 17: have been following openers, and he has pitched better when
- 45:47Speaker 17: he has followed an opener. But getting to start his
- 45:49Speaker 17: own game for the second straight outing after tying for
- 45:54Speaker 17: his longest outing of the season with those seven innings
- 45:56Speaker 17: at Fenway last week.
- 45:57Speaker 18: Yeah, probably in the backside of his career, of course,
- 46:01Speaker 18: thirty seven years old. Now for Michaelis, the Astro is
- 46:04Speaker 18: not only seeing quite a bit in the regular season,
- 46:06Speaker 18: but also in spring's trainings when he was with the
- 46:09Speaker 18: Cardinals and now Nationals, so they know what he throws.
- 46:12Speaker 18: He's got six or seven pitches he'll throw at any time.
- 46:14Speaker 18: He throws a lot of strikes. He'll give up some
- 46:16Speaker 18: long balls, and the Astros need to take advantage of mistakes.
- 46:20Speaker 6: Yeah.
- 46:21Speaker 17: Eighteen home runs allowed by Michaelis and eighteen appearances this
- 46:25Speaker 17: year tied for the seventh most home runs allowed by
- 46:27Speaker 17: any pitcher in the National League this season. So the
- 46:31Speaker 17: Astros looking to get off to a good start on
- 46:33Speaker 17: this road trip, and off to a good start against
- 46:35Speaker 17: the Nationals team that can score a lot of runs.
- 46:38Speaker 17: They lead the Majors in runs scored, but they also
- 46:40Speaker 17: give up a lot of runs. Fifth worst ERA of
- 46:44Speaker 17: any pitching staff in the Majors. Jose al Tuva will
- 46:49Speaker 17: lead things off for the Astros. Right handed, hitting, second basement,
- 46:53Speaker 17: batting two thirty six three fourteen on base percenta Jada homers,
- 46:56Speaker 17: twenty two RBIs for al tuove last two games, three
- 47:01Speaker 17: hits and maybe even more impressive, three walks over those
- 47:06Speaker 17: last two contests against Tampa Bay, both of which the
- 47:09Speaker 17: Astros won. Third baseman me to step behind the bag
- 47:13Speaker 17: and hugging the line, and the first pitch of the
- 47:16Speaker 17: ball game is swung through for strike ones going for
- 47:18Speaker 17: the downs in that ninety four mile an hour fastball,
- 47:21Speaker 17: but I wound up swinging through it. It was a
- 47:23Speaker 17: pitch that ran inside. First pitch brought to you by
- 47:27Speaker 17: Dyke in Proud to help listeners stay comfortable indoors or
- 47:29Speaker 17: affecting the air we share oh one and that s
- 47:32Speaker 17: dribbled foul off to the left wide of third.
- 47:35Speaker 13: Nothing in two eighty degrees at first pitch.
- 47:37Speaker 18: You had a little rain earlier on the tarpas on
- 47:39Speaker 18: the field, maybe about an hour ago, but mostly cloudy
- 47:42Speaker 18: skies right now.
- 47:44Speaker 17: There's a slight chance of thunderstorms the rest of the
- 47:48Speaker 17: evening in the nation's capital. Here's the two swinging a
- 47:56Speaker 17: foul back to the screen, able to spoil that breaking ball,
- 48:00Speaker 17: and it's nothing in two still to Altwuove.
- 48:04Speaker 18: Not a lot of strikeouts for Michael as you mentioned,
- 48:06Speaker 18: forty seven strikeouts in more than eighty four innings. One
- 48:10Speaker 18: of the lowest whift rates in baseball.
- 48:14Speaker 17: Oh two, and that is strike three. Call on the
- 48:17Speaker 17: inner third, frozen with a breaking ball and al tuo
- 48:20Speaker 17: ve goes down looking to begin the ball game one away.
- 48:23Speaker 6: Hey, frozen.
- 48:23Speaker 18: It was a good downer, started at about shoulder high.
- 48:28Speaker 17: So went out. Nobody on for Jordon Alvarez, who today
- 48:31Speaker 17: was named the American League Player of the Week for
- 48:34Speaker 17: the third time this season. Jurdon second in the ALE
- 48:40Speaker 17: with a three to twenty average, leads the American League
- 48:43Speaker 17: with twenty nine homers. First pitch and that's whacked foul
- 48:45Speaker 17: back into the screen and it's nothing. In one. Jordon
- 48:48Speaker 17: leads the majors with the four to twenty nine on
- 48:50Speaker 17: base percentage and tied with Nick Kurtz for the major
- 48:54Speaker 17: league lead in RBIs with sixty seven. Cholas works from
- 49:00Speaker 17: the first base side of the rubber. Here's the one
- 49:03Speaker 17: and that's down an end. But that Jordan go around,
- 49:05Speaker 17: he did not, says the third base umpire brock Balloo
- 49:08Speaker 17: almost did go around trying to get out of the
- 49:11Speaker 17: way of that pitch. And it's a one to one
- 49:13Speaker 17: count in Phil playing the poll the pitch and that
- 49:23Speaker 17: skips in the dirt into the glove of the catcher.
- 49:26Speaker 17: Millis two and one. Michael is facing the Astros for
- 49:30Speaker 17: the first time in two years. Last saw them June
- 49:33Speaker 17: of twenty twenty four in Houston when he was with
- 49:35Speaker 17: the Cardinals, and he pitched well, gave him two runs
- 49:38Speaker 17: over six innings. It only needed sixty two pitches to
- 49:40Speaker 17: get through those six innings two to one, and that
- 49:47Speaker 17: is in tight three balls into strike to Jordan. Home
- 49:51Speaker 17: played umpire tonight is Dan Murzille, Shane livens Farger at first,
- 49:55Speaker 17: crew chief, Mark Rippinger at third, and brock Baloo over her.
- 49:58Speaker 17: Ripperger's at second and rock blou over at third the
- 50:03Speaker 17: three to one and that's driven pretty deep to right,
- 50:07Speaker 17: going back on his cruise onto the warning track. He's
- 50:09Speaker 17: there and makes the catch a step onto the track
- 50:13Speaker 17: and that is out number two.
- 50:15Speaker 13: Maybe off the end of the back, great trajectory.
- 50:18Speaker 18: That looked like that had a chance going for number
- 50:21Speaker 18: two hundred of his career.
- 50:24Speaker 17: So two out nobody on for Essac Paradis, right handed
- 50:27Speaker 17: hitting third baseman, batting two fifty four to three, forty
- 50:30Speaker 17: eight on base percentage, twelve homers and forty seven runs
- 50:33Speaker 17: batted in for Paradis, comes in with a four game
- 50:37Speaker 17: hitch streak. First pitch and there's a strike on the
- 50:40Speaker 17: inside corner. Paradus with a home run yesterday against Tampa Bay,
- 50:45Speaker 17: one of two solo home runs the Astros head along
- 50:47Speaker 17: with Christian Walker and their two nothing win over the
- 50:50Speaker 17: Rays to take that series from the American League's best club.
- 50:53Speaker 17: Oh one, that's in the dirt, down and away and
- 50:56Speaker 17: it's a one to one count. Michael Is signing with
- 51:02Speaker 17: the Nationals a one year deal worth two point twenty
- 51:04Speaker 17: five million after pitching the last seven seasons with the Cardinals.
- 51:10Speaker 17: Cardinals initially got him in twenty eighteen, after he had
- 51:13Speaker 17: spent three years in Japan pitching for the Yamiuri Giants.
- 51:16Speaker 17: One to one, breaking ball is a bit inside. Two
- 51:19Speaker 17: balls and a strike. Really resurrected his career with that
- 51:23Speaker 17: stint in Japan. The story you hear so often, particularly
- 51:27Speaker 17: with pitchers, and he was a two time All Star
- 51:30Speaker 17: with Saint Louis two to one, and that is a
- 51:34Speaker 17: strike on the knees on the outside corner, and Paradis
- 51:37Speaker 17: taps the helmet.
- 51:38Speaker 18: He's going for number ten right here.
- 51:40Speaker 13: Paratis is the best at this.
- 51:42Speaker 17: And he's gonna win this. That pitch was a hair outside.
- 51:45Speaker 17: It was at the knees, but a hair outside.
- 51:49Speaker 6: He has two remaining challenges, so.
- 51:52Speaker 13: He remains perfect on those challenges.
- 51:55Speaker 17: Three and one the count to Paradis. There are guys
- 51:59Speaker 17: you say, no, this strike's own. Paradis, he's got the
- 52:01Speaker 17: proof ten for ten with the abs the pitch and
- 52:05Speaker 17: that's hiccked down the left field line and hooked into
- 52:08Speaker 17: the seats. Foul, and it's a full count. Very sparse
- 52:11Speaker 17: gathering here in DC on this Monday night. Steve mentioned
- 52:17Speaker 17: the game time temperature of eighty degrees. It was a
- 52:20Speaker 17: scorcher this holiday weekend throughout much of the country, and
- 52:23Speaker 17: here was no exception. I just cooled down a bit
- 52:29Speaker 17: since three to two and that is at the knees
- 52:33Speaker 17: for strike three. But Paradis is going to challenge this one.
- 52:35Speaker 17: A curveball from michaelas the batter challenge. That pitch was
- 52:40Speaker 17: a bit a hair outside. So Paradis is about to
- 52:43Speaker 17: go eleven for eleven, including two for two in this
- 52:46Speaker 17: plate appearance, and it'll head to first instead of heading
- 52:48Speaker 17: to the dugout.
- 52:49Speaker 13: Hey, he earned that one. A couple of close pitches
- 52:52Speaker 13: go his way.
- 52:55Speaker 17: So Paradis at first with two out for Christian Walker,
- 52:59Speaker 17: right handed, hitting for basement, batting two thirty eight, three
- 53:01Speaker 17: eleven on base percent, and hit his twentieth homer of
- 53:04Speaker 17: the season yesterday, eighth in the American League with fifty
- 53:07Speaker 17: seven runs batted in. Hit that home run to right field,
- 53:12Speaker 17: going the other way, hitch on the way and Walker
- 53:16Speaker 17: hits it in the air, foul territory, first base side,
- 53:19Speaker 17: and that'll reach the seats as Garcia gives it a look,
- 53:22Speaker 17: but it's about five rows back. They had temperatures for
- 53:26Speaker 17: the games this weekend here in d C they played
- 53:29Speaker 17: the Pirates. Game time temperatures for all the games were
- 53:33Speaker 17: in the upper nineties, if not higher. As a matter
- 53:35Speaker 17: of fact, Friday night they had triple digit game time temperature.
- 53:41Speaker 17: And that's the first time that they've started a game
- 53:44Speaker 17: in DC in fifteen years where it was at least
- 53:47Speaker 17: one hundred degrees out. Pitch miss is down and away
- 53:50Speaker 17: and it's a ball and a strike now to Walker
- 53:58Speaker 17: scoreless ballgame paradis at first two outs top of the
- 54:01Speaker 17: first start of a three game series for the Astros
- 54:04Speaker 17: in the Nation's capital. The one one and that's fouled
- 54:12Speaker 17: over the screen one and two ninety three on that
- 54:15Speaker 17: fastball from Michaelas used to throw a little harder, Michael List,
- 54:23Speaker 17: but he was never a guy who relied on a
- 54:25Speaker 17: velocity to beat you. You mentioned earlier. Steve a lot
- 54:28Speaker 17: of different pitches.
- 54:30Speaker 18: Hey, he likes to pitch backwards, use his fastball when
- 54:33Speaker 18: he's ahead one two and that's low two and two.
- 54:37Speaker 18: Slider has been his best pitch in his heyday, but
- 54:42Speaker 18: it's not as sharp as it used to be. And
- 54:43Speaker 18: as you get a little bit older, less hand speed
- 54:45Speaker 18: means less spin rate.
- 54:55Speaker 17: Two to two and that's hooked foul down the left
- 54:59Speaker 17: field line, hit pretty well, but well foul up into
- 55:01Speaker 17: the third deck, and the count remains. Even a Christian
- 55:05Speaker 17: Walker got way out of head of that fastball, Michael
- 55:16Speaker 17: has said at the letters to two, and that's driven
- 55:20Speaker 17: out to center field. Racing back on it as Young
- 55:22Speaker 17: onto the warning track, he leaves, it's off his glove
- 55:26Speaker 17: and off the wall around third paradis coming home. There
- 55:29Speaker 17: will be no relay to the plate parades scores. It's
- 55:32Speaker 17: an RBI double for Christian Walker and a one nothing
- 55:35Speaker 17: Astros lead. The center fielder Jacob Young almost made a
- 55:39Speaker 17: spectacular catch just to the left of straightaway center field,
- 55:44Speaker 17: but couldn't corral it.
- 55:47Speaker 13: That's sure. The Astros may take a look at this
- 55:49Speaker 13: to see if that crept over that wall it came
- 55:52Speaker 13: back in, but.
- 55:53Speaker 18: Nope, it came out of the glove of the center
- 55:56Speaker 18: fielder Young and Christian Walker's on second base playing the
- 56:00Speaker 18: Astros first run.
- 56:01Speaker 17: Yeah, trying to make the backhanded grab, all going into
- 56:03Speaker 17: the wall, and yeah, that ball was in the pocket
- 56:05Speaker 17: and popped out. Here's Lamont Waye Junior and he hits
- 56:08Speaker 17: this first pitch that pops it up third base side
- 56:11Speaker 17: foul ground over his meat makes the catch by the
- 56:13Speaker 17: coaches box and the side is retired. But the Astros
- 56:17Speaker 17: get a two out RBI double from Christian Walker and
- 56:20Speaker 17: after a half inning, Astros won Nationals. Coming up
