Latest / Stugotz and Company / Set 2: Mikey A's Expos Hat (w/ Brian Anderson)
Transcript
- 0:21Speaker 1: Ryan Anderson is calling the ALCS game two tonight. He's
- 0:25Speaker 1: calling the entire ALCS for TNT, and we'll get to
- 0:30Speaker 1: that in just a second, get to some baseball. He's
- 0:32Speaker 1: going to join us here in about five to ten minutes,
- 0:35Speaker 1: Brian Anderson will, but We were talking about frumpy kickers
- 0:38Speaker 1: in set one. We had Matt Hasselbeck on. He was
- 0:41Speaker 1: talking about frumpy kickers. And now we have an update
- 0:43Speaker 1: on the frumpy kicker from the L.A. Rams, Mikey A.
- 0:47Speaker 1: What has happened here?
- 0:49Speaker 2: So apparently Sean McVay was listening, and they have moved
- 0:53Speaker 2: on from Harold Mevis. They have cut him, and they
- 0:56Speaker 2: have signed Blake Grupe off the Jets. Harrison Mevis, yeah,
- 0:59Speaker 2: him too.
- 1:00Speaker 1: Leave us.
- 1:00Speaker 2: Listen, make a kick, and I'll get your name right.
- 1:06Speaker 2: And then they signed Blake Grupe from the Jets practice squad.
- 1:11Speaker 3: Listen.
- 1:12Speaker 1: Things are so bad, they signed the Jet kicker.
- 1:15Speaker 3: I don't want to be the one who tells Sean
- 1:17Speaker 3: McVay how to run his team.
- 1:18Speaker 4: Right.
- 1:19Speaker 3: The answer to your problems is almost never on the
- 1:22Speaker 3: Jets practice squad.
- 1:24Speaker 1: Put it on the poll. Is the answer to your
- 1:26Speaker 1: problems ever on the Jets practice squad? That's ridiculous. How
- 1:32Speaker 1: does this kicker look, the kicker from the Jets? Is
- 1:34Speaker 1: he frumpy? No, no, he's ripped.
- 1:38Speaker 2: He looks like a kicker. He looks like every other kicker.
- 1:42Speaker 2: As Matt Hasselbeck said, he looks like he belongs playing golf.
- 1:46Speaker 1: Right. I don't want to give ourselves credit, but coming
- 1:48Speaker 1: off the greatest game of the NFL season, the storyline
- 1:51Speaker 1: was the frumpy kicker. Everyone was thinking about it. No
- 1:53Speaker 1: one wanted to discuss it. It's not something you should
- 1:55Speaker 1: talk about. We talked about a frumpy kicker and our
- 1:59Speaker 1: disdain for frumpy kickers to start the show. I love you.
- 2:02Speaker 3: But this feels like validation because I saw a clip
- 2:06Speaker 3: from Ben Solak from ESPN where He basically highlighted what
- 2:10Speaker 3: he thought the projected trajectory of Mivas' kick was going
- 2:14Speaker 3: to be before it got blocked. That ball never had
- 2:18Speaker 3: a chance to go in. That's not even me joking
- 2:20Speaker 3: around saying that. And I think the Rams cutting him
- 2:24Speaker 3: is validation of the fact that they don't trust Harrison Mivas'
- 2:27Speaker 3: process kicking the ball. Or else they wouldn't be moving
- 2:31Speaker 3: on from him if they just thought... Okay, the operation
- 2:33Speaker 3: was bad.
- 2:34Speaker 1: How about the Rams take care of their special teams issues?
- 2:37Speaker 1: I mean, they have this world-class team. They have this
- 2:39Speaker 1: team that everyone thought might go undefeated. They have Hall
- 2:42Speaker 1: of Famers littered all over the field on offense and defense.
- 2:45Speaker 1: How about you pay attention to the kicker, to the punter,
- 2:48Speaker 1: to your special teams because it keeps costing them games?
- 2:51Speaker 1: How about that?
- 2:51Speaker 4: Huh? Hmm? Just a thought. Fair.
- 2:55Speaker 1: All three faces. Brian Anderson says, is good to join us.
- 3:00Speaker 1: I'm just saying, Snead and McVay, they're so much smarter
- 3:03Speaker 1: than us. No, they're not. They can't find a kicker.
- 3:06Speaker 1: And they just went to the Jets practice squad to
- 3:08Speaker 1: solve their problem. ridiculous. Tired of those guys.
- 3:12Speaker 2: Blake group.
- 3:12Speaker 1: He's going to be all pro. He's going to be
- 3:14Speaker 1: all pro and win a ring or two.
- 3:17Speaker 4: Yes.
- 3:19Speaker 3: I really like the Rams are sitting at two and three.
- 3:22Speaker 3: And I'm wondering like, do you guys think the Rams
- 3:24Speaker 3: are in trouble or would you still have them as
- 3:26Speaker 3: an NFC favorite? Because you're watching their defense, their defense
- 3:31Speaker 3: just lacks like team speed where the Rams pass rushers had,
- 3:35Speaker 3: had no lane discipline and, They're letting Josh Allen get
- 3:38Speaker 3: out of the pocket as much as they did yesterday. Like,
- 3:41Speaker 3: I get Miles Garrett's going to come back, and you're
- 3:43Speaker 3: hoping that Miles Garrett covers up some of those problems
- 3:46Speaker 3: on defense. But when I watch the Rams this season,
- 3:49Speaker 3: I just come away feeling underwhelmed every game.
- 3:52Speaker 1: Look at the Rams' next five games, okay? Look up
- 3:55Speaker 1: the schedule, read the games to us, and tell us
- 3:58Speaker 1: after you read the games if you think the Rams
- 4:00Speaker 1: are in trouble.
- 4:01Speaker 3: So their next five games are Cardinals, Raiders, Chargers, Commanders,
- 4:05Speaker 3: Cardinals again.
- 4:06Speaker 1: Yes.
- 4:07Speaker 3: I have no questions if they're going to be able
- 4:09Speaker 3: to beat those teams, but my questions come back to
- 4:12Speaker 3: when they play the Bills, when they play the Broncos,
- 4:15Speaker 3: when they play the Eagles, who they look pretty bad
- 4:17Speaker 3: against the Eagles for three and a half quarters. This
- 4:21Speaker 3: team doesn't look like the team that we were talking
- 4:23Speaker 3: about in preseason saying, is it the Rams or the field?
- 4:27Speaker 1: Mikey, you feel the same?
- 4:28Speaker 4: Yeah, go ahead.
- 4:30Speaker 2: It's not because they don't have Miles Garrett. And I
- 4:32Speaker 2: realize you said you think he's going to, you know,
- 4:34Speaker 2: you hope he could cover up those issues. He was
- 4:36Speaker 2: covering up a lot of issues for the Cleveland Browns
- 4:39Speaker 2: for years. And not only do they not have Miles Garrett,
- 4:42Speaker 2: but what they traded away to get him, they don't
- 4:44Speaker 2: have him either. So they kind of took out a
- 4:47Speaker 2: lot of their defense to get this one piece. And
- 4:50Speaker 2: when that one piece isn't there, it's going.
- 4:53Speaker 1: To be noticed.
- 4:53Speaker 2: I imagine when Miles Garrett gets back and he's somewhat–
- 4:57Speaker 2: you know, the player he was, I imagine that that
- 5:00Speaker 2: defense is going to look a lot faster. It's going
- 5:02Speaker 2: to look a lot better because quarterbacks are going to
- 5:05Speaker 2: have to get the ball out a lot quicker because
- 5:08Speaker 2: Miles Garrett is coming.
- 5:10Speaker 1: I understand why Taylor is asking that question, though. I do.
- 5:13Speaker 1: San Francisco's off to a 5-0 start. It's going to
- 5:15Speaker 1: be hard to win that division. San Francisco's very good.
- 5:18Speaker 1: Seattle's also in that division. I would expect, obviously, the
- 5:22Speaker 1: divisional winner to get to the playoffs and two wildcard
- 5:24Speaker 1: teams to come. from that division, and I think the Rams. So, Taylor,
- 5:28Speaker 1: they might have to go into the playoffs in a
- 5:30Speaker 1: way they were never expecting with a wild card spot.
- 5:33Speaker 4: On the road.
- 5:34Speaker 1: Yes, but they don't sweat that. Stafford's not sweating that,
- 5:36Speaker 1: you know?
- 5:37Speaker 3: Yeah, I don't think Stafford's sweating it. I don't think,
- 5:39Speaker 3: you know, Puka Nakua, Devontae Adams, any part of this
- 5:43Speaker 3: Rams team is sweating it, but the fact that they
- 5:46Speaker 3: would be going on the road to San Francisco or
- 5:48Speaker 3: going on the road to Seattle does make a difference
- 5:52Speaker 3: in terms of their chances of getting to the Super Bowl.
- 5:54Speaker 1: Maybe.
- 5:54Speaker 4: Maybe.
- 5:55Speaker 1: Before we get to some baseball here, what'd you guys make?
- 5:58Speaker 1: I got goosebumps. Before overtime, they had to flip the
- 6:02Speaker 1: coin again. And Stafford was already out at center field
- 6:06Speaker 1: at the 50-yard line on the logo. And Josh Allen
- 6:09Speaker 1: starts strolling out, and man, does he ever stroll. That
- 6:12Speaker 1: is the most confident stroll I have ever seen in
- 6:13Speaker 1: my entire life. That's just a guy who strolls like
- 6:16Speaker 1: he knows he's better than you are. That's the kind
- 6:20Speaker 1: of stroll he has. But as they're getting closer to
- 6:23Speaker 1: one another, They both start smiling at each other because
- 6:26Speaker 1: they know what both of them are doing. They're having
- 6:29Speaker 1: a ridiculous game, a game for the ages, and they're
- 6:32Speaker 1: both marveling at each other's talents. It was a cool moment.
- 6:35Speaker 3: Stu, the thought I had when I saw those two
- 6:37Speaker 3: walking out, it was mostly around Matthew Stafford, where I'm like,
- 6:41Speaker 3: if Matthew Stafford didn't spend his first 12 years in Detroit,
- 6:45Speaker 3: would Matthew Stafford be in the GOAT conversation with Tom
- 6:48Speaker 3: Brady and Peyton Manning? Because I think there's a chance
- 6:52Speaker 3: if he wasn't on that dead Detroit Lions team.
- 6:54Speaker 1: Right. I mean, that had Calvin Johnson.
- 6:55Speaker 2: He had the talent.
- 6:56Speaker 1: He had the talent. He did.
- 6:59Speaker 2: Listen, he had Calvin Johnson is such a cop-out answer.
- 7:03Speaker 1: He didn't have anything else. He had a guy who
- 7:06Speaker 1: is a cheat code.
- 7:07Speaker 2: I will grant you, Calvin Johnson is probably the second
- 7:11Speaker 2: best wide receiver I've seen in my lifetime. I didn't
- 7:13Speaker 2: catch too much of Jerry Rice.
- 7:15Speaker 3: Right.
- 7:15Speaker 2: So Randy Moss, Calvin Johnson. But he was also running
- 7:19Speaker 2: for his life behind a bad offensive line and having
- 7:22Speaker 2: to put up 50 points behind.
- 7:24Speaker 1: A bad defense. So, yes, I agree.
- 7:26Speaker 2: Taylor, if he's on probably 28 other organizations, we're probably
- 7:33Speaker 2: talking about him in that conversation.
- 7:36Speaker 4: Yeah, maybe.
- 7:37Speaker 1: Congratulations to Josh Allen for winning his first game in overtime.
- 7:42Speaker 1: What took you so long? It's amazing to me.
- 7:47Speaker 2: Kept changing the rules for him to win one.
- 7:49Speaker 1: He finally got one.
- 7:50Speaker 4: Yes.
- 7:51Speaker 1: God, he makes that game look too easy. When he's right,
- 7:54Speaker 1: when he's playing right, he's healthy, and he's playing the
- 7:56Speaker 1: way he did last night against that defense and that
- 7:58Speaker 1: team on the road. It was just fantastic to watch.
- 8:01Speaker 1: I'm trying to watch the game, trying to focus on
- 8:03Speaker 1: the game, trying to focus on Stafford and Josh Allen
- 8:06Speaker 1: going back and forth, and I'm getting texts from Mikey
- 8:08Speaker 1: A because he's upset about something going on in the
- 8:11Speaker 1: Guardians Rays series. Brian Anderson, who's calling that series, is
- 8:15Speaker 1: going to join us. In just a minute, what's going
- 8:17Speaker 1: on with you, Mikey? You know what?
- 8:20Speaker 2: I just watched the Guardians do to the Rays in
- 8:24Speaker 2: one inning what it took three games for the Yankees
- 8:27Speaker 2: to do, and that's like score a run. Like, just
- 8:30Speaker 2: get a couple of hits.
- 8:33Speaker 4: It was just, you know, it.
- 8:36Speaker 2: Kind of brought back those feelings that I had as
- 8:39Speaker 2: soon as the Yankees got eliminated.
- 8:41Speaker 1: And I just, it hurt my feelings.
- 8:45Speaker 3: Stu, it is such a humbling spot to be in
- 8:47Speaker 3: as a Yankee fan when you're seeing the Guardians out
- 8:50Speaker 3: hit the Yankees over the course of a three-game series,
- 8:54Speaker 3: what the Guardians were able to do in one game.
- 8:56Speaker 3: And then you switch over to the Brewers-Dodgers game, and
- 8:59Speaker 3: they're talking about Brewer ball on the broadcasts. And Derek
- 9:02Speaker 3: Jeter is praising why Brewer Ball works. And you're just
- 9:06Speaker 3: listening to him describe what Brewer Ball is. It's just
- 9:09Speaker 3: playing small ball and playing good defense. That's all people
- 9:12Speaker 3: are asking for.
- 9:12Speaker 1: That's what Jeter did, though.
- 9:17Speaker 3: Jeter, like, he's not meant, he's just like, you could
- 9:20Speaker 3: hear in Jeter's points, he's praising the Brewers.
- 9:23Speaker 4: Right.
- 9:24Speaker 3: But what Jeter is really saying, like, if you had
- 9:26Speaker 3: a Jeter translation.
- 9:27Speaker 4: Sure.
- 9:28Speaker 3: He doesn't mention the Yankees once, but a Jeter translation,
- 9:30Speaker 3: I speak Derek Jeter. All he's saying is how bad
- 9:33Speaker 3: the Yankees are.
- 9:37Speaker 1: Is that all he's saying?
- 9:39Speaker 3: That's our captain giving the subliminal message saying, hey, I
- 9:44Speaker 3: know I'm saying the Brewers right now and praising how
- 9:46Speaker 3: good the Brewers are, but what you really have to
- 9:49Speaker 3: listen for is me saying this is the complete opposite
- 9:52Speaker 3: way that the Yankees build their team and how the
- 9:55Speaker 3: Yankees look in October when I'm telling you what works
- 9:58Speaker 3: in October and what doesn't work in October.
- 10:00Speaker 1: But what worked for Jeter in October was the fact
- 10:02Speaker 1: that the Yankees were spending more money than everyone else, right?
- 10:05Speaker 1: We had the core four. You guys aren't going to
- 10:10Speaker 1: get past this, are you?
- 10:12Speaker 4: No.
- 10:12Speaker 3: And, like, we're still waiting for Aaron Boone and Brian
- 10:15Speaker 3: Cashman to say anything.
- 10:16Speaker 4: Right.
- 10:17Speaker 3: They're going to give us excuses for why they crash
- 10:20Speaker 3: out of the playoffs. What, are you just waiting to
- 10:22Speaker 3: see if the Rays win? And then you could come
- 10:24Speaker 3: on your soapbox and tell us, oh, the Rays, like,
- 10:27Speaker 3: look at this Rays team we lost to. The Rays
- 10:30Speaker 3: are playing in the World Series. That could have been
- 10:32Speaker 3: us if we got a couple different bounces in a
- 10:35Speaker 3: three-game sweep where we were never even competitive.
- 10:38Speaker 1: Yes, but I just figured, at least for Mikey, that
- 10:40Speaker 1: Josh Allen and Matthew Stafford were getting past the Yankees, like,
- 10:42Speaker 1: just for a night.
- 10:43Speaker 4: I mean.
- 10:44Speaker 2: Well, when I sent that text, it was like the
- 10:47Speaker 2: second inning, and it was like a 3-0 game or
- 10:51Speaker 2: something like that. It wasn't until the fourth quarter that
- 10:53Speaker 2: things took off, and I did forget. I did forget
- 10:55Speaker 2: for a little while. Thank you, Josh Allen and Matthew Stafford,
- 10:58Speaker 2: for that, for making me forget about the Yankees for
- 11:01Speaker 2: 20 minutes.
- 11:01Speaker 1: Thank you. Taylor is right. Maybe the Rams won't make
- 11:05Speaker 1: the playoffs. I mean, when you're going to the Jets
- 11:06Speaker 1: practice squad to solve your kicking problem, there's a problem.
- 11:11Speaker 1: Brian Anderson, voice of the ALCS, joins us next. He
- 11:25Speaker 1: is doing play-by-play for the ALCS for TBS. Pre-game coverage
- 11:30Speaker 1: of the ALCS Game 2 starts tonight, 7 p.m. on TBS, TruTV,
- 11:34Speaker 1: and HBO Max, followed by first pitch of Guardians Rays
- 11:38Speaker 1: at 8 p.m. Brian Anderson is with us right now.
- 11:42Speaker 1: He is insanely jealous of Mikey A's Expos hat. What
- 11:45Speaker 1: is going on there? It was an odd introduction. You
- 11:49Speaker 1: just wanted to talk about Mikey's Montreal Expo hat.
- 11:53Speaker 4: I mean, that is like... That just brings me back
- 11:56Speaker 4: to some childhood trauma of never getting a Montreal Expos
- 12:00Speaker 4: hat when I was a kid and always wanting one.
- 12:02Speaker 4: So now, I mean, back in the day when you'd
- 12:05Speaker 4: come on as a guest, they'd give you like a
- 12:06Speaker 4: 13-inch black and white television. Can we just say that
- 12:10Speaker 4: we'll just get a Montreal Expos hat? And if it
- 12:13Speaker 4: was right off Mike's head, that would be great, actually.
- 12:16Speaker 2: Listen, if you want to send me the money, I'll
- 12:17Speaker 2: send it to you.
- 12:18Speaker 4: Wait, wait, wait. No, no, Mike.
- 12:22Speaker 2: I just want you to wait by the mailbox again.
- 12:25Speaker 4: I just noticed, by the way, can you tell I'm
- 12:29Speaker 4: in St. Petersburg by the drapes in the room in
- 12:33Speaker 4: the hotel? Matter of fact, these were put up the
- 12:41Speaker 4: year I tried to get the Montreal Expos hat. when
- 12:43Speaker 4: I was eight years old in 1980.
- 12:46Speaker 1: Wait, so what happened to the Expo hat? Why did
- 12:48Speaker 1: you never get it?
- 12:49Speaker 4: Never got it. I was told many years later as
- 12:53Speaker 4: a full-grown adult when I could handle it, my mom
- 12:56Speaker 4: revealed that she canceled the order. She only told me
- 13:00Speaker 4: that Um, it was like the Christmas story, you know,
- 13:04Speaker 4: the whole oval team drink, more oval team. That's what's
- 13:07Speaker 4: the basic scene. I was waiting for an expose, had
- 13:10Speaker 4: mom canceled the order and then told me 30 years
- 13:13Speaker 4: later that, um, It's because I went to the mailbox every.
- 13:16Speaker 1: Day for like six months.
- 13:21Speaker 4: Open the mailbox. Not here yet. Mom's like, Oh, that's amazing.
- 13:24Speaker 4: You know how the U S postal system is. I
- 13:28Speaker 4: got no idea how the U S post, but I
- 13:30Speaker 4: never trusted the post office after that for years. Yeah. Yeah.
- 13:34Speaker 4: That's a good looking hat though. Dang it.
- 13:38Speaker 3: Brian, I don't want to add anything unnecessary to your plate,
- 13:41Speaker 3: but I have a pitch for you.
- 13:42Speaker 4: Yeah. Okay.
- 13:44Speaker 3: It's a new game show called Name Those Drapes, where
- 13:47Speaker 3: you see drapes in a hotel, and then you have
- 13:49Speaker 3: to say what city the drapes are in.
- 13:52Speaker 4: That's right. Yes, I love it. No, I mean, that
- 13:54Speaker 4: would be a good, because I do a lot of
- 13:56Speaker 4: these from hotels.
- 13:57Speaker 1: Right.
- 13:59Speaker 4: I feel like I get comments about the drapes, where
- 14:02Speaker 4: maybe I should position myself differently. But yeah, I think
- 14:06Speaker 4: the drapes are kind of, I think that's what you
- 14:09Speaker 4: guys should go for maybe when you have an interview
- 14:13Speaker 4: with a person from Florida. You have a Florida motif
- 14:16Speaker 4: behind you on a green screen.
- 14:18Speaker 1: Taylor, that is the $ 100 question.
- 14:20Speaker 4: Those drapes, I mean, that's.
- 14:22Speaker 1: The easy one.
- 14:22Speaker 4: St.
- 14:22Speaker 1: Pete's, yeah. No, I would guess St. Pete. That would
- 14:26Speaker 1: be my first guess.
- 14:27Speaker 2: It's coming out of the drapes.
- 14:35Speaker 4: I'll see the benefits of having video on this stuff.
- 14:39Speaker 1: Uh what do you say to people who say the
- 14:41Speaker 1: dodgers are bad for baseball brian.
- 14:44Speaker 4: Oh no no everything's good for everything i'm i'm more
- 14:48Speaker 4: on the the wwe side of things whatever it is
- 14:51Speaker 4: like it's all good whether they're the villains or whether
- 14:55Speaker 4: you know you've got the upstart brewers the little engine
- 14:58Speaker 4: that could that's all good it's all good i don't
- 15:00Speaker 4: think the dodgers are bad for baseball at all i
- 15:02Speaker 4: don't agree with that and believe that. And I got
- 15:05Speaker 4: a lot of friends over there and they do it right, man.
- 15:08Speaker 4: They spend, they spend money. They're not afraid. They take
- 15:12Speaker 4: care of their fans with, with elite talent up and
- 15:15Speaker 4: down their lineup and on their pitching staff. And, you know,
- 15:18Speaker 4: they got 55, 57,000 seats to sell every game at
- 15:23Speaker 4: Dodger stadium. So, and there's a lot going on in
- 15:25Speaker 4: Los Angeles. So you got to run your business the
- 15:29Speaker 4: way you run it. And I got no problems with
- 15:32Speaker 4: any of that.
- 15:33Speaker 3: Brian, me and Mikey A are two depressed Yankee fans,
- 15:36Speaker 3: and I saw this stat yesterday that made me even
- 15:39Speaker 3: more depressed, where the Guardians had 14 hits in their
- 15:42Speaker 3: Game 1 win versus Drew Rasmussen in the Rays. The
- 15:45Speaker 3: Yankees had 12 total hits and never had the lead
- 15:48Speaker 3: in three games in the ALDS versus the Rays. How
- 15:51Speaker 3: surprised are you that the Yankees didn't make it to
- 15:54Speaker 3: the ALCS?
- 15:57Speaker 4: I wish I could say I'm surprised, but I'm not.
- 15:59Speaker 4: Tampa Bay, by far, best team in the American League.
- 16:03Speaker 4: They outclassed the Yankees even before the series. I didn't
- 16:07Speaker 4: want to get passive-aggressive on the air last night, but
- 16:11Speaker 4: the Guardians, more than any team, exposed the faults of
- 16:16Speaker 4: the Yankees, the way they approached the game. The Yankees...
- 16:21Speaker 4: just aren't there. You know, they're not there yet. And
- 16:24Speaker 4: they've got a long way to go. And obviously, again,
- 16:27Speaker 4: they don't have Stan. They don't have Judge. That changes everything.
- 16:31Speaker 4: They pitched a good chunk of the season without Rodon.
- 16:34Speaker 4: Good chunk of the season. Or at least a window
- 16:37Speaker 4: of the season with Cole coming back from Tommy John
- 16:40Speaker 4: and Max Breed out. And they still, you know, won
- 16:45Speaker 4: over 90 games. Like, they're a success story in the
- 16:47Speaker 4: regular season. But, boy, their roster was a wreck. in
- 16:51Speaker 4: the post season. And it kind of reminded me when
- 16:53Speaker 4: they played the Astros in the LCS, got swept by Houston.
- 16:56Speaker 4: That's what the vibe was. You know, they knew they
- 16:59Speaker 4: were good enough to be in the post season, but
- 17:00Speaker 4: I don't, I don't think they were even close to
- 17:04Speaker 4: being good enough to make a run in the postseason.
- 17:07Speaker 4: And the Rays expose every weakness because Tampa Bay plays
- 17:11Speaker 4: the game in the way you're supposed to. And then
- 17:14Speaker 4: you show up and you see how Cleveland kind of
- 17:16Speaker 4: game-planned against the Rays. And as I said, I think
- 17:19Speaker 4: it really exposed the Yankees' deficiencies even more.
- 17:23Speaker 1: Brian, if I told you way back when, I think
- 17:25Speaker 1: it was 91, you were interning for the San Antonio Spurs,
- 17:28Speaker 1: that one day you would be the play-by-play voice of
- 17:32Speaker 1: the ALCS, you would have told me what?
- 17:35Speaker 4: That would have been laughable. Laughable. I mean, I started
- 17:39Speaker 4: as a handheld cameraman, and I played college baseball, so
- 17:44Speaker 4: I always had this notion that I thought I could Honestly,
- 17:47Speaker 4: my brother was was he played in the big leagues briefly,
- 17:50Speaker 4: but he came up through the minor leagues and I
- 17:52Speaker 4: would go visit him. So I was still playing in
- 17:56Speaker 4: high school and college. So I would go spend weeks
- 17:58Speaker 4: at a time in the summers, wherever he was. And
- 18:00Speaker 4: my brother's still in the game, Mike. He's a scout
- 18:04Speaker 4: with the Rangers. Matter of fact, you guys will remember,
- 18:06Speaker 4: it was a famous game in baseball history. Mark Whitten
- 18:10Speaker 4: hit four homers in that 12 RBIs. Do you remember
- 18:13Speaker 4: that game?
- 18:14Speaker 1: Yes.
- 18:14Speaker 4: So my brother gave up the middle two homers in
- 18:17Speaker 4: that game. That was his major league debut. But he
- 18:21Speaker 4: made it. And he signed out of a tryout camp
- 18:23Speaker 4: and he made it. So as I was kind of
- 18:26Speaker 4: thinking about my life. I knew I wasn't going to
- 18:28Speaker 4: be good enough to play professionally. I was a scholarship
- 18:30Speaker 4: athlete at a small college in San Antonio. I was
- 18:33Speaker 4: working for the Spurs. And I started just kind of
- 18:37Speaker 4: attaching myself to these radio broadcasters wherever they were in
- 18:40Speaker 4: my brother's teams, Greensboro and Chattanooga and Indianapolis. And I
- 18:45Speaker 4: kind of was like, I think I can do that.
- 18:47Speaker 4: You know, I had no formal training. I didn't I
- 18:50Speaker 4: was an English major. I didn't have any broadcasting journal.
- 18:54Speaker 4: I wouldn't have made it five minutes in the new
- 18:55Speaker 4: house school. Let's put it that way. So I didn't
- 18:58Speaker 4: know what I didn't know. And I just started, I
- 19:00Speaker 4: kind of got my job calling minor league baseball. because
- 19:04Speaker 4: I could throw batting practice. And I threw the first
- 19:06Speaker 4: group of BP for five years with the double-A Dodgers,
- 19:09Speaker 4: and I caught bullpens. That was basically why they brought
- 19:12Speaker 4: me on. Like, yeah, he can kind of do all
- 19:13Speaker 4: this bullshit work, and we'll give him the middle three innings,
- 19:17Speaker 4: you know?
- 19:17Speaker 1: I'm like, yeah, all right.
- 19:20Speaker 4: So that was kind of my path, and I was
- 19:24Speaker 4: terrible when I first started. But no, in those 1991, like,
- 19:27Speaker 4: there's no way, no way I would have, ever have
- 19:32Speaker 4: dreamed any of this. But, you know, I did play
- 19:34Speaker 4: all the sports, and I just never said no. They said,
- 19:37Speaker 4: you want to do soccer? You want to do baseball, golf?
- 19:40Speaker 4: I just said, sure, I'll give it a try.
- 19:44Speaker 2: I want to ask you about the series, but first,
- 19:46Speaker 2: just kind of a macro question. As somebody who's been
- 19:49Speaker 2: around the game, and whose family has been around the
- 19:51Speaker 2: game for so long, do you think it's gotten too
- 19:53Speaker 2: analytics dependent? Do you think it's all about launch angle
- 19:57Speaker 2: and exit velocity as opposed to just I can see
- 20:00Speaker 2: that guy can play?
- 20:01Speaker 4: No. Maybe, but I do think the game's cyclical. So
- 20:08Speaker 4: I think we were in the wave of three true outcomes,
- 20:11Speaker 4: and now we're kind of moving away from that. So
- 20:13Speaker 4: I would say the team I work for throughout the year,
- 20:16Speaker 4: the Brewers, they're as analytics-driven as any team. However, there's
- 20:20Speaker 4: a pretty... distinct dividing line and i would say the
- 20:24Speaker 4: same for the guardians and kevin cash here with with
- 20:27Speaker 4: the rays that there there is now a pretty strict
- 20:30Speaker 4: dividing line on all the information you get in the
- 20:33Speaker 4: matchups and the percentages and what what probabilities show favor
- 20:37Speaker 4: versus what actually happens and so i think in the
- 20:40Speaker 4: last couple of years especially with my team the brewers
- 20:45Speaker 4: That's why Pat Murphy's been the perfect guy. You've got
- 20:48Speaker 4: to have somebody sifting all that information and knowledge. It
- 20:51Speaker 4: was debilitating players in the three true outcomes because they're
- 20:56Speaker 4: trying to get paid. Their motivation was Players are getting
- 20:59Speaker 4: paid off of these numbers, off of the on-base percentage,
- 21:02Speaker 4: which means walks and homers, and strikeouts weren't coming against you.
- 21:07Speaker 4: Pitchers are getting paid off strikeouts and swing and miss, chase.
- 21:11Speaker 4: So like the old school pitcher that just felt his
- 21:14Speaker 4: way through a game and the ball was in play,
- 21:16Speaker 4: then you add, okay, if the ball is going to
- 21:18Speaker 4: be in play, we need better athletes. They killed the shift.
- 21:22Speaker 4: So now the athletes came back in the game, and
- 21:23Speaker 4: now there's great value in it. catchers and elite second
- 21:27Speaker 4: baseman who can feel their position and shortstops and centerfielders.
- 21:30Speaker 4: And we were kind of morphing back to what we were,
- 21:34Speaker 4: what the game was, you know, that I fell in
- 21:36Speaker 4: love with in the eighties and nineties, kind of the
- 21:38Speaker 4: way the game's been played forever. So I guess to
- 21:40Speaker 4: answer your question, it was, I think it was, Those
- 21:43Speaker 4: voices were very strong and they had a huge stranglehold
- 21:48Speaker 4: on the game. And now I think it's starting to
- 21:51Speaker 4: move the other way because results are showing these owners
- 21:55Speaker 4: who are making these hires that there's got to be
- 21:58Speaker 4: a zig or a zag when you're coming off the
- 22:02Speaker 4: next wave. And I think that's where the game will change.
- 22:05Speaker 4: And I think we're kind of getting back to that.
- 22:07Speaker 3: Brian, you look at the Guardians, their last four games,
- 22:11Speaker 3: they've won all four. Could you make the argument that
- 22:15Speaker 3: Jose Ramirez, who's been the catalyst for them as their
- 22:18Speaker 3: superstar during this run, is the most underrated baseball player
- 22:22Speaker 3: of this generation?
- 22:24Speaker 4: Yeah, well, yes, I do. He's going to have a statue.
- 22:29Speaker 4: He's going to be in the Hall of Fame. He's
- 22:30Speaker 4: going to be one of the all-time great players, and
- 22:33Speaker 4: I still think when Fans in 30 years go to
- 22:36Speaker 4: the Hall of Fame and they go, who's Jose Ramirez? Wow.
- 22:39Speaker 4: Look at these numbers. So I do think it's going
- 22:42Speaker 4: to be a little bit of that. You know, I
- 22:44Speaker 4: would say kind of there's a outside of the Tom
- 22:46Speaker 4: Lomansky videos, you know, Fred McGriff was kind of that
- 22:49Speaker 4: guy where he just put up numbers every year. You know,
- 22:52Speaker 4: it's like, damn, what a great player. But the difference now,
- 22:56Speaker 4: what I've seen in the last four games, obviously, but
- 22:59Speaker 4: really since the trade deadline, is Ramirez has real dudes
- 23:04Speaker 4: around him. And De Lauder is a real factor that
- 23:08Speaker 4: showed up specifically in the game in game one last
- 23:11Speaker 4: night where Cash did not walk Jose Ramirez, which was
- 23:15Speaker 4: an automatic in any other era with Guardians baseball. He didn't, though,
- 23:20Speaker 4: because De Lauder's been so good. Ramirez got the job done,
- 23:23Speaker 4: drove in the run. And then they went out and
- 23:25Speaker 4: they got Joe Adele, you know, from the angels, um,
- 23:30Speaker 4: They got Nathaniel Lowe, even the starter yesterday, Foster Griffin.
- 23:35Speaker 4: So they Patrick Bailey came in May. Literally, that was
- 23:39Speaker 4: the Chris Antonetti game yesterday. Rarely does a general manager
- 23:42Speaker 4: have the satisfaction of watching all of his acquisitions deliver
- 23:46Speaker 4: in one game.
- 23:47Speaker 1: Yes.
- 23:48Speaker 4: And they all did. And so but that that's, you know,
- 23:52Speaker 4: Ramirez is the guy and now he's got pieces around him.
- 23:56Speaker 1: Brian Anderson with us. He is on the ALCS. He
- 23:59Speaker 1: is calling it game two tonight, 7 p.m. on TBS, TruTV,
- 24:02Speaker 1: and HBO Max. I feel like the Guardians, I know
- 24:05Speaker 1: the Rays are good, Brian. I feel like the Guardians
- 24:07Speaker 1: are going to be tough to beat. When you're down 0-2,
- 24:09Speaker 1: you kind of get through that. You win three straight,
- 24:11Speaker 1: beat the White Sox, move on. It galvanizes a team
- 24:14Speaker 1: in a locker room. What do you think about what
- 24:16Speaker 1: it is I'm saying? They're going to be a tough
- 24:18Speaker 1: out the rest of the way here.
- 24:20Speaker 4: Yeah, the series definitely flipped with that game last night.
- 24:23Speaker 4: They beat the Rays ace. You know, well, I mean,
- 24:25Speaker 4: Rasmussen pitched well, but they got them. You know, they
- 24:27Speaker 4: won the game that they raised and a fully rested bullpen,
- 24:31Speaker 4: which Kevin Cash didn't deploy because they got down in
- 24:34Speaker 4: the game. But I will say there is some concern
- 24:40Speaker 4: with the Guardians, with Parker Messick. You know, they're kind
- 24:43Speaker 4: of lined up on paper. Messick can get some rookie
- 24:47Speaker 4: of the year votes. He's pitching game two tonight. But,
- 24:51Speaker 4: you know, he's in an innings limit. He's never been.
- 24:53Speaker 4: And he pitched two and a third in game four. Like,
- 24:57Speaker 4: they are definitely concerned and will watch this. His pitch profile,
- 25:03Speaker 4: all the under-the-hood stuff, like when they feel like fatigue
- 25:06Speaker 4: is setting in. But he's had a long year, high-stress pitches.
- 25:09Speaker 4: John Smoltz always told me that pitching in the playoffs,
- 25:13Speaker 4: one pitch is like three. And so I think that's
- 25:16Speaker 4: a real factor, even though Messick and William, Gavin Williams,
- 25:18Speaker 4: are set up the next two games. It looks great
- 25:21Speaker 4: for the Guardians, but... I think this is going to
- 25:23Speaker 4: be a really good series. I still think Tampa Bay
- 25:26Speaker 4: is heavily favored. They're better in a lot of ways,
- 25:30Speaker 4: but the Guardians find a way, man. They do, and
- 25:34Speaker 4: they're a real team. They put incredible pressure on to
- 25:38Speaker 4: take extra bases and steal bases, so this is going
- 25:41Speaker 4: to be a really good series with two teams that
- 25:43Speaker 4: are kind of peaking right now, which is great for
- 25:47Speaker 4: us on television.
- 25:48Speaker 3: Brian, Joey Otani in his last 24 games, dating back
- 25:51Speaker 3: to August 19th, is batting 157 with zero home runs
- 25:55Speaker 3: and one RBI.
- 25:56Speaker 1: He stinks.
- 25:56Speaker 3: And now the conversation with the Dodgers is they might
- 26:01Speaker 3: bench Otani because he might be too hurt out there
- 26:05Speaker 3: to continue with them now down 2-0 in this series.
- 26:08Speaker 3: What would you do if you were the Dodgers?
- 26:10Speaker 4: I mean, I'm not benching Otani under no circumstances. I'm
- 26:14Speaker 4: not sure where that's coming from. I can't imagine that
- 26:17Speaker 4: is coming from anybody inside the Dodgers camp. To me,
- 26:21Speaker 4: that feels like a scout or some scouts or some
- 26:25Speaker 4: baseball personnel kind of dropping that to some of the
- 26:27Speaker 4: media there. I mean, just go look at last year.
- 26:33Speaker 4: We did the Dodgers Brewers. We had the National League
- 26:35Speaker 4: last year with TBS, remember? So he didn't do a thing.
- 26:40Speaker 4: in the first three games of that series. He was
- 26:43Speaker 4: just there. He was a presence, all of that. But
- 26:46Speaker 4: my Lord, then he had the greatest game ever played
- 26:49Speaker 4: in the history of this game and won the MVP
- 26:51Speaker 4: of the NLCS. He pitched six innings. He struck out 10.
- 26:54Speaker 4: He had three homers. It's like he's always got that
- 26:57Speaker 4: in him. I am not buying that. I don't think
- 27:00Speaker 4: the Brewers are buying that. And if he's bad, I
- 27:03Speaker 4: do think pitching has really tapped into his resources. It's
- 27:07Speaker 4: hard to pitch and hit in the big leagues that's
- 27:11Speaker 4: why it's never been done he really made up his
- 27:14Speaker 4: mind he wanted to try to win a Cy Young
- 27:15Speaker 4: award this year and he was on a pace to
- 27:18Speaker 4: do that but then the body kind of failed him
- 27:20Speaker 4: you know he's in his 30s now too it's not
- 27:22Speaker 4: like he's got mileage you know before even he's been
- 27:25Speaker 4: in the big leagues a long time and then he
- 27:26Speaker 4: had a whole run where he was the guy in
- 27:29Speaker 4: Japan through high school you know how big high school
- 27:33Speaker 4: baseball is in japan it's literally like march madness those
- 27:36Speaker 4: guys still like 190 pitches a game there so he
- 27:39Speaker 4: had all that he then had all of his japanese
- 27:42Speaker 4: professional league run and then he came to major league
- 27:46Speaker 4: baseball so there's a lot of mileage on that body
- 27:49Speaker 4: and hey it catches up with everyone but i'm not
- 27:52Speaker 4: counting him in no way No way.
- 27:54Speaker 1: I know you're working, but is it tricky? Is it
- 27:56Speaker 1: difficult being away from your team, the Brewers, as they
- 27:59Speaker 1: go through the NLCS here now?
- 28:01Speaker 4: No, not at all. I don't mind it. I'd rather
- 28:04Speaker 4: not call the Brewers in the playoffs.
- 28:05Speaker 1: Interesting.
- 28:06Speaker 4: So it's kind of fun just being on this side
- 28:10Speaker 4: of it, you know, just to be able to do
- 28:12Speaker 4: our game, come back, watch the Brewers or, you know,
- 28:15Speaker 4: we were watching in the booth yesterday before our game started.
- 28:19Speaker 4: And then you can just kind of be a fan
- 28:20Speaker 4: and do all those fan things and you know, talk
- 28:22Speaker 4: about the game like a fan. When you're doing the game,
- 28:25Speaker 4: I know it's hard for fans to understand, and I
- 28:29Speaker 4: get it, but when you're doing the game, you don't
- 28:31Speaker 4: think that way. It's very assembly line oriented. You're just,
- 28:36Speaker 4: what's the next element? What's the next pitch? What is
- 28:38Speaker 4: the play? Call that right. Tee up your analyst, get
- 28:41Speaker 4: to the graphic, get to the promo, all that stuff.
- 28:44Speaker 4: And you do that over and over for 18 half innings.
- 28:50Speaker 4: So you're not thinking about your fandom or being with
- 28:53Speaker 4: the team. And I know fans love like to call
- 28:57Speaker 4: out me and Joe Davis and boo Shambi when he
- 29:00Speaker 4: was doing the Cubs in the playoffs. It just, it
- 29:02Speaker 4: doesn't work like that. I promise it doesn't work like that.
- 29:06Speaker 4: So it's actually easier for me and fun and, I
- 29:09Speaker 4: get to get on the text and chop it up
- 29:11Speaker 4: with all my friends and the people I work with. And,
- 29:13Speaker 4: you know, we're like fans, right? What are they doing?
- 29:16Speaker 4: So I actually enjoy it a lot more. But if
- 29:20Speaker 4: I do the Brewers, I've done them three times in
- 29:22Speaker 4: the postseason. You just you do the job. You know,
- 29:25Speaker 4: you're you're you're putting the engine in the car. So
- 29:29Speaker 4: you're not thinking about how it's going to run.
- 29:30Speaker 1: So as a fan, you have the Brewers in four, right? Sweep? Yeah.
- 29:34Speaker 4: A hundred percent. Yeah. They need to bench Ohtani right now.
- 29:39Speaker 1: They should bench Ohtani, right?
- 29:41Speaker 4: They should bench the whole team, actually. I mean, just
- 29:44Speaker 4: like forfeit.
- 29:46Speaker 1: You're texting your friends. Yamamoto stinks. Come on.
- 29:51Speaker 4: Like, I can't tell you every day. My phone is
- 29:54Speaker 4: on fire. People want World Series tickets. They haven't had
- 29:58Speaker 4: a World Series since 1982.
- 30:00Speaker 1: Let's get there.
- 30:00Speaker 4: 1982, man. So like the possibility of having a World
- 30:05Speaker 4: Series in Milwaukee. And I know the Packers are big.
- 30:08Speaker 4: Don't get me wrong, but. There's nothing bigger than a
- 30:12Speaker 4: World Series in Milwaukee to cheesers, not even the Packers.
- 30:16Speaker 4: Trust me, it's going to be wild if they make it.
- 30:20Speaker 1: All right, man. We enjoyed our time here with you.
- 30:23Speaker 1: Pre-game coverage of the ALCS game two starts tonight, 7 p.m.
- 30:27Speaker 1: on TBS, TruTV and HBO Max, followed by first pitch
- 30:31Speaker 1: of Guardians Rays at 8 o'clock. Brian Anderson will be
- 30:35Speaker 1: on the call of that game. We appreciate the time.
- 30:37Speaker 1: We love the drapes. Taylor's on to a good idea
- 30:40Speaker 1: there with that game. You can host it because you're
- 30:42Speaker 1: not busy enough. He's hiding behind the old drapes right now.
- 30:46Speaker 1: They have a musty, like a musky smell, right? Oh,
- 30:51Speaker 1: it's bad.
- 30:51Speaker 4: These drapes can talk.
- 30:55Speaker 1: That's our tagline.
- 30:56Speaker 3: That's our show tagline.
- 31:00Speaker 1: We look forward to the call tonight and we hope
- 31:03Speaker 1: to do this again soon. We appreciate it, man.
- 31:05Speaker 4: Yeah, man. Love you guys. Appreciate you having me. I'll
- 31:07Speaker 4: be checking the mailbox for that.
- 31:10Speaker 1: We're going to get on this. We're going to get
- 31:12Speaker 1: you one, okay? We promise you.
- 31:13Speaker 4: Come on, Mike. That looks like a size 8, too.
- 31:16Speaker 4: It is an 8.
- 31:17Speaker 2: It is absolutely an 8.
- 31:19Speaker 4: I can see that from a mile away. That's a
- 31:24Speaker 4: massive ring around that dome. Nice.
- 31:27Speaker 1: He's got a melon. We'll send you a smaller one.
- 31:30Speaker 4: Please. 7 and an 8. Pinhead.
- 31:33Speaker 1: Thank you, Brian. Have a good call tonight. We look
- 31:36Speaker 1: forward to the game. See you.
- 31:37Speaker 4: Yes, sir.
