- 0:29Speaker 1: Happy Thursday, everybody.
- 0:33Speaker 2: Welcome to the Sean O'Connell Show on ESPN 700 and 92.1 FM.
- 0:40Speaker 2: We got a packed show today. Gordy Chiesa is going
- 0:43Speaker 2: to join us. Eric Weddle is going to join us.
- 0:48Speaker 2: We've got Dishin' with Dev on a replay. We're going
- 0:53Speaker 2: to have a little bit of fun with the show.
- 0:55Speaker 2: Shreyas Lada also going to join us the new Salt
- 0:58Speaker 2: Lake Tribune jazz writer who we have been remiss and
- 1:03Speaker 2: not catching up with as of yet. So Shreyas at
- 1:07Speaker 2: one 30 and look, we're going to have a lot
- 1:11Speaker 2: of fun with most of the show. The Colgan guys,
- 1:13Speaker 2: I think are going to swing by, talk about what
- 1:15Speaker 2: they've got going on, special offers for our listeners.
- 1:21Speaker 1: We will have fun on the show today.
- 1:23Speaker 2: This first segment is not going to be fun for
- 1:25Speaker 2: me to talk about because we got really bad news, uh,
- 1:29Speaker 2: reported by.
- 1:32Speaker 1: Jason Patak.
- 1:33Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 1:33Speaker 2: And Josh Furlong and a lot of the guys that
- 1:36Speaker 2: are on that Utah beat jam Wallace, who is a
- 1:41Speaker 2: Tennessee transfer to the university of Utah plays defensive tackle
- 1:45Speaker 2: for the team has been suspended indefinitely.
- 1:48Speaker 1: For, I know this is a family show.
- 1:51Speaker 2: I want to make sure that we talk carefully because
- 1:53Speaker 2: there are sometimes kids in the car. Uh, I recommend
- 1:57Speaker 2: that if you have kids in the car, you turn
- 2:00Speaker 2: the volume down for a little while, maybe come back
- 2:02Speaker 2: with this next segment because there's going to be some
- 2:05Speaker 2: themes on here that I don't want parents to have
- 2:08Speaker 2: to explain to their kids. If, uh, if you don't
- 2:12Speaker 2: want to have that conversation yet, I got a seven
- 2:14Speaker 2: year old And I would not be having this conversation
- 2:18Speaker 2: in front of her, so I want any of you
- 2:20Speaker 2: out there listening right now to maybe avoid this next
- 2:25Speaker 2: 20 minutes or so, maybe 15 minutes or so, while
- 2:29Speaker 2: we dance around the details, but we have to talk
- 2:32Speaker 2: about it in a real way, in my opinion.
- 2:38Speaker 1: So, 5, 4, 3, 2, 1, you've been warned.
- 2:44Speaker 2: Jan Wallace has been suspended indefinitely for alleged sexual misconduct
- 2:50Speaker 2: stemming from an incident that happened a few weeks ago.
- 2:56Speaker 2: And it's been alleged. Well, his alleged victim is claiming
- 3:03Speaker 2: that he assaulted her, that he forced himself upon her.
- 3:07Speaker 2: He has not been arrested for that. He has been
- 3:10Speaker 2: arrested on suspicion of disseminating graphic materials of somebody without consent,
- 3:19Speaker 2: which is by itself a very, very serious incident. I'm
- 3:26Speaker 2: just going to use sexual misconduct. I'm just going to
- 3:29Speaker 2: use misconduct moving forward in case someone's tuning in late.
- 3:34Speaker 2: All right? And the allegations are that He's been casually
- 3:43Speaker 2: seeing that maybe a situationship with this young woman that
- 3:48Speaker 2: he seemingly got jealous that she was talking to other people.
- 3:51Speaker 2: He found out about that via her Snapchat somehow that
- 3:56Speaker 2: he decided to engage in certain activities that without her consent,
- 4:00Speaker 2: he filmed said activities and then sent the video of
- 4:06Speaker 2: those activities of him, Engaged with her in those activities.
- 4:10Speaker 2: To the other people she was talking about. Which is
- 4:13Speaker 2: of course. A violation of many different things. General respect.
- 4:19Speaker 1: Privacy. The terms of your relationship. Whatever that is.
- 4:25Speaker 2: Right? It's misconduct. And it's all alleged. We'll let the
- 4:32Speaker 2: investigation play itself out. But her allegations and. what he
- 4:38Speaker 2: was arrested for don't 100% match up. He has not
- 4:42Speaker 2: been formally charged with a crime. The way that you
- 4:52Speaker 2: adjudicate this within your program, if you're Morgan Scali in
- 4:56Speaker 2: your first year as a head coach is going to
- 4:58Speaker 2: come down to, I think a matter of great importance.
- 5:00Speaker 1: I think this is going to be something that, When.
- 5:04Speaker 2: You preach culture and you talk about culture and everything
- 5:08Speaker 2: that you are doing is culture-based, you have to make
- 5:12Speaker 2: sure that the behavior of your team matches up with
- 5:15Speaker 2: that culture. And if it doesn't, which of course it's
- 5:18Speaker 2: not always going to, that you handle it accordingly.
- 5:22Speaker 1: Now, an indefinite suspension, even if this is Devin.
- 5:26Speaker 2: Dampier, if this is if this is way Sean Parker,
- 5:30Speaker 2: if this is Jackson Benny, if this is the most
- 5:33Speaker 2: important players on your team, you still have to handle
- 5:35Speaker 2: it the same way as if it's a guy like
- 5:37Speaker 2: jam Wallace, who has played one game for the team
- 5:41Speaker 2: as a transfer, you have to handle it the right way.
- 5:46Speaker 2: And we have talked about and not talked about certain
- 5:49Speaker 2: players for years that are involved in whatever. And I would,
- 5:54Speaker 2: I would make an argument that this is the one
- 5:57Speaker 2: that is the biggest culture killer. If you don't punish
- 6:00Speaker 2: it of all of the things that college athletes find
- 6:04Speaker 2: themselves mixed up in, you've got your run of the mill, uh, academic.
- 6:10Speaker 1: Improprieties, cheating in class.
- 6:14Speaker 2: I don't think that there are many football fans that
- 6:16Speaker 2: are going to cancel their season tickets or disengage from
- 6:20Speaker 2: a program or stop believing in a coach. because there's
- 6:25Speaker 2: a couple of players getting help on tests. I think
- 6:27Speaker 2: that even though that is improper behavior, I don't think
- 6:32Speaker 2: that there's a lot of people who will die on
- 6:34Speaker 2: that Hill as a fan. I think that when you
- 6:39Speaker 2: hear about things like, you know, team members of a
- 6:44Speaker 2: team that may be going out and getting into An altercation,
- 6:47Speaker 2: a physical altercation, a fight. Maybe somebody gets arrested because
- 6:52Speaker 2: somebody says something at a bar.
- 6:53Speaker 1: Maybe something else happens.
- 6:55Speaker 2: Whatever house party goes bad.
- 6:58Speaker 1: Most of the time, you don't even hear about that stuff.
- 7:00Speaker 2: But if you do, I don't think there's a lot
- 7:02Speaker 2: of fans that are going to say, Oh my gosh,
- 7:04Speaker 2: I cannot support X, Y, or Z anymore because these
- 7:08Speaker 2: guys are menaces to society and they're going around house
- 7:11Speaker 2: parties and they're beating up young guys and they're beating
- 7:14Speaker 2: up frat boys and whatever else.
- 7:16Speaker 1: I don't think Now, you want to see that handled properly.
- 7:19Speaker 2: You want to see people suspended for a half or
- 7:22Speaker 2: for a game, the violation of team rules stuff. You
- 7:25Speaker 2: want that to be adjudicated properly within the context of
- 7:30Speaker 2: the football culture in addition to whatever legal action needs
- 7:33Speaker 2: to take place. You don't want to see people hurting
- 7:36Speaker 2: other individuals with impunity. I think that it gets a
- 7:42Speaker 2: little bit dicier when When you start to talk about
- 7:45Speaker 2: things like driving under the influence, a lot of people
- 7:48Speaker 2: have very serious emotional connections to that charge, that crime,
- 7:56Speaker 2: that issue, right? Some people have been hurt by it
- 7:59Speaker 2: in the past. It becomes a hot button for a
- 8:01Speaker 2: lot of people. And it is a very serious thing that, again,
- 8:05Speaker 2: you want to.
- 8:06Speaker 1: See handled properly.
- 8:07Speaker 2: And college football across the nation, I think, does a
- 8:10Speaker 2: pretty poor job of this. especially if players are very
- 8:13Speaker 2: talented where, you know, a guy gets a DUI and
- 8:17Speaker 2: the team slaps him on the wrist and kind of
- 8:20Speaker 2: buries it. And hopefully behind the scenes makes them seek
- 8:25Speaker 2: treatment and understand the seriousness of the crime or whatever,
- 8:28Speaker 2: but it doesn't become a huge matter of public record.
- 8:33Speaker 2: And I think that there's almost like a quota to
- 8:38Speaker 2: be insensitive about it, that a fan will say, Hey,
- 8:43Speaker 2: You know, it's just kind of like.
- 8:47Speaker 1: The cost of doing business. It's kind of par for
- 8:49Speaker 1: the course.
- 8:49Speaker 2: You can't control every single person's background, personality, behavior when
- 8:54Speaker 2: you're talking about 100 people on a roster.
- 8:57Speaker 1: So this is.
- 8:57Speaker 2: Something that we will not support, we will not like,
- 9:01Speaker 2: but we will accept as sort of like a sunk cost,
- 9:04Speaker 2: as a collateral damage to being part of that football culture.
- 9:08Speaker 1: And as long as you don't handle it egregiously.
- 9:11Speaker 2: Bad the way that Georgia has handled their crazy reckless
- 9:16Speaker 2: driving things over the last couple of years. I don't
- 9:19Speaker 2: think your program is going to develop a reputation because
- 9:22Speaker 2: a guy or two has a DUI. I mean, we've
- 9:25Speaker 2: seen this at BYU. We've seen this at Utah. We've
- 9:27Speaker 2: seen this at Utah state. We've seen this in a
- 9:30Speaker 2: lot of these different places. I make an argument and
- 9:33Speaker 2: my My opinion on this is certainly colored by my
- 9:38Speaker 2: own experiences in life and the way that I was
- 9:40Speaker 2: raised and the way that I'm trying to raise my
- 9:43Speaker 2: own children. I think that proper or improper handling of
- 9:50Speaker 2: this type of allegation in particular is as serious or
- 9:58Speaker 2: more serious than pretty much anything else that can happen
- 10:01Speaker 2: in a typical college football slash crime space. Because it is, unfortunately,
- 10:08Speaker 2: it is a common issue on campuses and with campus life.
- 10:13Speaker 2: That there is some disconnect between what people think is okay,
- 10:18Speaker 2: what people think is consent, what people are doing when
- 10:22Speaker 2: they're under the influence of certain things. I would make
- 10:26Speaker 2: an argument that for myself and probably a lot of
- 10:29Speaker 2: you and I think most fan bases.
- 10:33Speaker 2: The way that sexual violence or allegations of sexual violence
- 10:37Speaker 2: are handled by a team, and this goes all the
- 10:41Speaker 2: way to the professional level and certainly on down the
- 10:43Speaker 2: ladder to high school and hopefully not beyond that, but
- 10:49Speaker 2: I think the way that you handle this is the
- 10:52Speaker 2: most important thing you can handle when it comes to
- 10:56Speaker 2: putting out the fires. For me, I don't want you
- 10:59Speaker 2: to just put out the fire.
- 11:01Speaker 1: I don't want you to just make it disappear. I
- 11:03Speaker 1: don't want you to just make it go away.
- 11:04Speaker 2: I don't want it to be a thing that you
- 11:06Speaker 2: sweep under the rug and nobody ever talks about it again.
- 11:09Speaker 2: I want the young men who are in the program
- 11:13Speaker 2: to understand that they are accountable. I want the public
- 11:17Speaker 2: around the program to know that the young men are
- 11:20Speaker 2: going to be held accountable.
- 11:22Speaker 1: And to be fair to the young men, I want
- 11:25Speaker 1: equal accountability to.
- 11:28Speaker 2: False accusations if something is found to be a false accusation.
- 11:34Speaker 2: And look, there's a lot of complicated details that we
- 11:36Speaker 2: will have to sort through with this Jan Wallace thing.
- 11:39Speaker 2: And it's, I'll admit, it's convenient for me that we're
- 11:43Speaker 2: talking about it on a guy who's like a fringe
- 11:46Speaker 2: roster player. He's not somebody who's important to the wins
- 11:50Speaker 2: or the losses. But I hope you understand that I
- 11:53Speaker 2: would feel the same way as somebody who covers this
- 11:56Speaker 2: team for a living, I would feel the same way.
- 11:58Speaker 1: If it was someone who's important to the team.
- 12:03Speaker 2: That I would fully support Morgan Scali suspending indefinitely, even
- 12:09Speaker 2: at every down starter until this issue is resolved and
- 12:14Speaker 2: has worked out. And if what the arrest was made
- 12:18Speaker 2: for is the extent of the crime, it's still a very,
- 12:22Speaker 2: very nasty crime and something that has to be addressed
- 12:25Speaker 2: and something that for me probably precludes you from playing
- 12:28Speaker 2: for my football team. It's more complicated now than it's
- 12:34Speaker 2: ever been because these guys are paid. And if there's
- 12:39Speaker 2: a sunk cost to them being paid, you might have
- 12:41Speaker 2: to accept that. I don't think whatever amount of money
- 12:44Speaker 2: you're throwing at anyone who came out of the transfer
- 12:46Speaker 2: portal is worth compromising the culture of your team. And
- 12:50Speaker 2: that's the only reason I brought this up at the
- 12:53Speaker 2: beginning of the show today. I would much rather be
- 12:55Speaker 2: talking about X's and O's and details and what went
- 12:58Speaker 2: on with the Utah jazz last night. But for me,
- 13:02Speaker 2: it's an important thing that the teams that we watch
- 13:05Speaker 2: and that we root for in the state of Utah
- 13:08Speaker 2: are what they say they are. And it's even more
- 13:12Speaker 2: important for me because this is my alma mater. And
- 13:14Speaker 2: I count several people on that staff as friends. And
- 13:18Speaker 2: I've gotten to know some of the guys. And I
- 13:20Speaker 2: think that their reputations being attached to either proper handling
- 13:25Speaker 2: of something like this or improper handling of something like
- 13:28Speaker 2: this makes it a lot more personal.
- 13:32Speaker 1: I don't know. Jan Wallace from Adam. I've had one
- 13:35Speaker 1: cursory interview style conversation. That's it. I don't know him.
- 13:40Speaker 2: I don't know his parents. I don't know his family.
- 13:43Speaker 2: I don't know how he was raised. I don't know
- 13:45Speaker 2: his opinions on any of this stuff. What I know
- 13:48Speaker 2: about him is that these allegations are very, very serious,
- 13:53Speaker 2: serious enough that the police have made an arrest, but
- 13:56Speaker 2: they did not charge him with a crime as of yet.
- 13:59Speaker 2: He's not been formally charged with the crime as of yet.
- 14:04Speaker 2: Morgan Scali. This is the first off the field test ever.
- 14:10Speaker 2: Of his tenure as head coach. Well, you could probably
- 14:12Speaker 2: make an argument that this is the second off the
- 14:14Speaker 2: field test because the first off the field test was
- 14:18Speaker 2: his handling of the transition.
- 14:21Speaker 1: And I think he did that with flying colors.
- 14:23Speaker 2: I think that Morgan handled that as well as anyone
- 14:26Speaker 2: could possibly handle it. He takes the mantle from his predecessor,
- 14:32Speaker 2: from his mentor. He does it with class and he,
- 14:37Speaker 2: as everyone is, the house is kind of burning down
- 14:40Speaker 2: when it comes to the Whittingham reputation. Morgan Scali has
- 14:44Speaker 2: been very deliberate in the words that he says about
- 14:48Speaker 2: Kyle Whittingham in the light with which he mentions the influence.
- 14:54Speaker 1: It's all positive stuff. And I think that Morgan has
- 14:56Speaker 1: done a phenomenal job in that.
- 14:58Speaker 2: And I think my expectation, the trust I have and
- 15:03Speaker 2: what we have seen so far and what we have
- 15:05Speaker 2: seen from him in the last several decades is I
- 15:08Speaker 2: think that this will be handled exactly how it needs
- 15:10Speaker 2: to be handled.
- 15:12Speaker 1: And I want it to be clear that on some things.
- 15:15Speaker 2: And this is one of those things, a football team,
- 15:20Speaker 2: a program, a basketball team, a gymnastics squad, whatever should
- 15:24Speaker 2: be absolutely uncompromising. when it comes to safety for their
- 15:29Speaker 2: student athletes, when it comes to safety for the student body,
- 15:33Speaker 2: when it comes to safety of the young women that
- 15:37Speaker 2: are interacting with your student athletes. It's too much to
- 15:43Speaker 2: ask to say, hey, this is just boys being boys.
- 15:46Speaker 1: It's not that.
- 15:47Speaker 2: If the allegations are true, I promise you it is
- 15:51Speaker 2: not just boys being boys. It's abnormal, pernicious behavior that
- 15:56Speaker 2: you have to cut out like a cancer from your
- 15:59Speaker 2: football team if you want true gentleman culture. That's probably
- 16:07Speaker 2: the wrong way to say it.
- 16:07Speaker 1: If you want true.
- 16:09Speaker 2: class and elite culture to be part of what your
- 16:14Speaker 2: football team is. It's an important thing that really has
- 16:18Speaker 2: nothing to do with football in this case, because you're
- 16:21Speaker 2: not losing production. If he's off the team, you're not
- 16:24Speaker 2: adding production. If you put them back on the team,
- 16:28Speaker 2: but the reaction has to be the same. Even if
- 16:31Speaker 2: it is somebody who's important to you beating Houston, And
- 16:34Speaker 2: the indefinite suspension is the right thing right now until
- 16:38Speaker 2: more details come out, until the legal process resolves itself.
- 16:42Speaker 2: Too often, in my opinion, what you have is an
- 16:47Speaker 2: indefinite suspension and the details come out. And before we
- 16:50Speaker 2: get legal resolution, you'll have... a coach led a player
- 16:54Speaker 2: back onto the team. Just like, Oh, well, he's got
- 16:56Speaker 2: these things hanging.
- 16:57Speaker 1: Over his head.
- 16:57Speaker 2: We're going to let the legal process pay play out.
- 17:00Speaker 2: We see that at the NFL level so often with
- 17:02Speaker 2: domestic violence disputes and a bunch of stuff.
- 17:05Speaker 1: And look, I get it.
- 17:06Speaker 2: There's, there's a legal protection offered to people. You're innocent
- 17:10Speaker 2: until you're proven guilty. That's the legal thing, right? The
- 17:14Speaker 2: culture thing for me is significantly different. 877-353-0700. If you
- 17:22Speaker 2: want to express your agreement or your disagreement, I'm happy
- 17:25Speaker 2: to talk about it. We're not going to spend too
- 17:28Speaker 2: much more time on it today, but it is something
- 17:30Speaker 2: that was reported yesterday. all that we've had to talk
- 17:34Speaker 2: about with Utah football is these pleasant surprises and this
- 17:37Speaker 2: great stuff. And the correct way to cover this team
- 17:40Speaker 2: is to cover the entirety of this team. And this
- 17:43Speaker 2: is something that you cannot blame on the coaches. You
- 17:46Speaker 2: cannot blame on the coaching staff. I don't even think
- 17:49Speaker 2: you can blame it on anyone's parents or the way
- 17:52Speaker 2: that they were raised. I think that this is individual behavior.
- 17:55Speaker 2: If any of this is true, but if it is true,
- 17:59Speaker 2: I want like, if there's even a possibility that he
- 18:02Speaker 2: ever gets his behind onto a football field again, this
- 18:06Speaker 2: better not be true. And if it is, and he
- 18:08Speaker 2: wants to play again, I want like a serious proven
- 18:13Speaker 2: rehabilitation restitution. I want there to be a consequence that
- 18:19Speaker 2: actually makes sense because we live in a society. Now
- 18:24Speaker 2: we live in a world. Now we live in a
- 18:27Speaker 2: sports culture now where this is more important than it's
- 18:31Speaker 2: ever been to make it clear where you stand when
- 18:36Speaker 2: it comes to taking care of and protecting those that are,
- 18:41Speaker 2: for lack of a better term, weaker than you, more
- 18:44Speaker 2: vulnerable than you. It is wholly unacceptable for men, no
- 18:49Speaker 2: matter how cool, popular, attractive, successful they are, it is
- 18:55Speaker 2: wholly unacceptable in any circumstance for them to use that
- 19:00Speaker 2: in a way that makes a woman feel attacked, vulnerable,
- 19:10Speaker 2: put upon, victimized.
- 19:14Speaker 1: It's just not okay.
- 19:17Speaker 2: And her allegations and his allegations, her allegations and the
- 19:23Speaker 2: police allegations do not match up right now. It's important
- 19:26Speaker 2: that I give Jam that grace to say, She said, rape.
- 19:33Speaker 2: The police said, we're not arresting you for that. We're
- 19:36Speaker 2: arresting you for disseminating these images without consent. There's a
- 19:42Speaker 2: big distance between those two things. But even the crime
- 19:46Speaker 2: that he got arrested for, the alleged crime that he
- 19:48Speaker 2: got arrested for, is one... that you have to root
- 19:51Speaker 2: out in your football program if you want us to believe,
- 19:55Speaker 2: if you want anyone to believe, including the people in
- 19:58Speaker 2: the building, to believe that culture is the main driver
- 20:03Speaker 2: of your success or anything else.
- 20:06Speaker 5: And OC, just to chime in, just a little bit
- 20:09Speaker 5: here and then we can move on. Um, I think
- 20:12Speaker 5: that Morgan, if you asked him and if he was
- 20:15Speaker 5: in a place to talk about this directly, I think
- 20:18Speaker 5: he's a defensive player, Colton Swan, uh, his D his
- 20:22Speaker 5: position coaches is Luther Ellis. I think if you asked
- 20:25Speaker 5: any of those guys and they were in a position
- 20:26Speaker 5: to answer it directly and publicly, they would say, yeah,
- 20:31Speaker 5: we agree. That's why we indefinite. That's why there's the
- 20:33Speaker 5: indefinite suspension. And that's how we are rooting it out
- 20:37Speaker 5: of our program. So I, I think that, and you
- 20:39Speaker 5: said it just a little bit ago, that is what
- 20:43Speaker 5: you should do for now.
- 20:45Speaker 1: And I think they do that.
- 20:46Speaker 5: They don't just kick him off the team out of
- 20:48Speaker 5: respect for the spokesperson's comment to the Salt Lake Tribune
- 20:53Speaker 5: and others said out of respect for the legal process,
- 20:56Speaker 5: we will not comment any further. They're doing that out
- 20:58Speaker 5: of respect for the legal process as well to not
- 21:01Speaker 5: just kick Jim off the team right now. Indefinitely suspending
- 21:05Speaker 5: him and Morgan being the person that you know him
- 21:09Speaker 5: to be, that I believe him to be, and all
- 21:13Speaker 5: those other guys in the coaching staff being who I
- 21:15Speaker 5: believe them to be, they're not going to be the
- 21:19Speaker 5: kind of people that are just going to bring Jam
- 21:20Speaker 5: Wallace probably back on the team. I wouldn't expect Jam
- 21:24Speaker 5: Wallace to play another down or practice another practice rep
- 21:31Speaker 5: for University of Utah. And if if that does happen,
- 21:35Speaker 5: it's because they've gotten, they've gotten enough evidence or whatever,
- 21:40Speaker 5: enough information to quote unquote, exonerate him of these, of
- 21:44Speaker 5: these allegations. And that, that would probably be okay. But
- 21:49Speaker 5: I just, I don't expect him to play again because these,
- 21:52Speaker 5: this culture that Morgan was brought up in under Kyle
- 21:55Speaker 5: Whittingham and urban Meyer before that, and, you know, coach
- 21:58Speaker 5: Mack before that. And the person that I believe him
- 22:02Speaker 5: to be, you know, him to be again. I just,
- 22:06Speaker 5: I don't see him going, you know what? Technically you're okay,
- 22:10Speaker 5: but we don't, but so go ahead and come back.
- 22:13Speaker 5: I just think we don't want even the reputation of
- 22:15Speaker 5: this on our team.
- 22:16Speaker 2: Well, look, if he is cleared, if he is exonerated
- 22:21Speaker 2: and really like, I don't like using the legal language.
- 22:23Speaker 1: If he didn't do this, he didn't do it.
- 22:25Speaker 2: If he didn't do this and there's a preponderance of
- 22:29Speaker 2: evidence in whatever investigation and the coaches feel like he
- 22:33Speaker 2: didn't do this, then back on the team and a
- 22:37Speaker 2: false accusation should be handled almost as seriously as the
- 22:42Speaker 2: accusation itself, or excuse me, as the alleged incident itself.
- 22:47Speaker 2: I really, you know, there's a power in pointing your
- 22:50Speaker 2: finger and saying, this person hurt me.
- 22:52Speaker 1: And people know that now.
- 22:55Speaker 2: If I want to hurt somebody and they haven't actually
- 22:59Speaker 2: done anything to me, me accusing them is a way
- 23:03Speaker 2: that I could, if I decide I don't like James
- 23:05Speaker 2: Peterson anymore, and James hasn't actually done something to me,
- 23:09Speaker 2: but I want him gone, or I feel wronged by him,
- 23:12Speaker 2: even if he didn't do anything illegal. An accusation, a
- 23:15Speaker 2: harsh accusation against James Peterson is something that will follow you,
- 23:20Speaker 2: that will hurt you, that will damage your reputation, right?
- 23:23Speaker 2: Especially when it comes to something like this, because it's
- 23:26Speaker 2: a scarlet letter. It's attached to you, even if you
- 23:30Speaker 2: are eventually exonerated.
- 23:31Speaker 1: People will question that.
- 23:33Speaker 2: And unfortunately, that reality has to be handled differently almost
- 23:37Speaker 2: the same way as the allegation itself has to be handled.
- 23:40Speaker 2: But to the original point, the allegation has to be
- 23:43Speaker 2: taken very seriously because.
- 23:46Speaker 1: This is a team that says culture, culture, culture.
- 23:49Speaker 2: Who we are is doing things the right way. Doing
- 23:52Speaker 2: things the right way matters to Morgan Scali. It matters
- 23:56Speaker 2: to Luther Ellis. It matters to Anoke Brechterfield. It matters
- 24:01Speaker 2: to Derek Odom. It matters to Kevin McGiven. It has
- 24:04Speaker 2: to matter to everyone all up and down the program.
- 24:08Speaker 2: We know it matters to Devin Dampier. We get to
- 24:10Speaker 2: talk to him every single week. I'm not going to
- 24:13Speaker 2: tell you Devin Dampier is a perfect person. Everything we
- 24:16Speaker 2: know about Devin Dampier, he's a pretty.
- 24:17Speaker 1: Dang good guy.
- 24:19Speaker 2: I don't want Devin Dampier to have to feel like, wait,
- 24:23Speaker 2: the guys around me, don't have to follow the same
- 24:27Speaker 2: standard that I have to follow in order to be
- 24:29Speaker 2: on this team.
- 24:33Speaker 5: And thus the indefinite suspension and the, it feels like
- 24:37Speaker 5: probably not going to be back on this football team.
- 24:39Speaker 5: At least that's how it feels right now. Like I
- 24:41Speaker 5: think that they're handling it the way that it needs
- 24:44Speaker 5: to be handled right now, short of just kicking them
- 24:46Speaker 5: off the team outright, which probably isn't the most fair
- 24:49Speaker 5: thing to do because you want to, you want to
- 24:51Speaker 5: be fair to this legal process.
- 24:54Speaker 1: So that's the last we'll say about it.
- 24:57Speaker 2: GM Wallace indefinitely suspended under allegations of serious misconduct involving
- 25:07Speaker 2: what can only be described as adult activities being filmed
- 25:13Speaker 2: and then disseminated without the consent of the young lady
- 25:17Speaker 2: involved to apparently some people she was talking to on Snapchat.
- 25:22Speaker 2: So it gives off the account in the articles gives
- 25:26Speaker 2: off the vibe that he was pretty dang jealous of
- 25:30Speaker 2: what was going on and wanted to say, Hey, just
- 25:33Speaker 2: so you guys know, this is, this belongs to me, which.
- 25:36Speaker 1: Is totally unacceptable and inappropriate. Absolutely.
- 25:40Speaker 5: And even though, you know, Jason Patakios article in the
- 25:43Speaker 5: Tribune describes it as, I think you use the word
- 25:46Speaker 5: situation ship. Well, a casual off and on, that he
- 25:51Speaker 5: and this girl have had, and yet he saw that
- 25:58Speaker 5: she was communicating with other men, and even though it's
- 26:02Speaker 5: very casual between them, he reacted in this way. He
- 26:06Speaker 5: felt that she is his, which is, like you said,
- 26:10Speaker 5: completely unacceptable, which I'm glad that as soon as Utah
- 26:15Speaker 5: football found out about this, which was October 11th, 11
- 26:18Speaker 5: days ago, they immediately said, Get out of here for
- 26:23Speaker 5: an indefinite period of time.
- 26:25Speaker 1: Certain things are culture killers.
- 26:27Speaker 2: I believe that this type of behavior, if it's allowed
- 26:29Speaker 2: in your program, is one of them. It leads to
- 26:32Speaker 2: coaches being fired. It leads to players being arrested. It
- 26:35Speaker 2: leads to problems that you can't get over easily. So
- 26:41Speaker 2: I think it's being handled correctly, and I applaud the
- 26:44Speaker 2: coaching staff for addressing it this way, and we'll see
- 26:48Speaker 2: what happens with the legal process.
- 26:56Speaker 1: Spence check.
- 26:56Speaker 2: It's is going to be live at rally house today
- 26:59Speaker 2: from two to six. If you have not checked out
- 27:02Speaker 2: rally house yet, they've got an outrageous selection of Utah.
- 27:04Speaker 1: You'd scared.
- 27:05Speaker 2: You can get game day ready at rally house. It's
- 27:07Speaker 2: right on four South next to the trader Joe's. If
- 27:10Speaker 2: you know where that's out between what's that that's between
- 27:14Speaker 2: sixth and seventh East. You can also come by with
- 27:18Speaker 2: expenses at rally house. When a pair of BYU, Utah tickets, hello,
- 27:22Speaker 2: assigned you tell me it. with Devin Dampier's signature on it,
- 27:27Speaker 2: and anyone who stops by can get passes to the
- 27:29Speaker 2: ESPN tailgate for the Utah BYU game. They're going to
- 27:33Speaker 2: have Little Caesars hot and ready pizza also.
- 27:37Speaker 1: I might have to swing by, honestly.
- 27:41Speaker 2: Tailgate passes, Little Caesars pizza, a raffle for BYU Utah tickets,
- 27:47Speaker 2: and A signed helmet by Devin Dempere being given away
- 27:52Speaker 2: at Rally House on 4th South during the Spence Check
- 27:55Speaker 2: It show today on the drive. Gordy Chiesa next talking
- 27:59Speaker 2: about the Utah Jazz season opener.
- 28:03Speaker 1: CSPN 700 and 92.1 FM.
- 28:13Speaker 6: Peace out.
- 28:13Speaker 4: Let's get the latest on the Utah Jazz with former
- 28:16Speaker 4: Jazz assistant coach Gordy Chiesa. He's forgotten more about the
- 28:20Speaker 4: NBA than any of us will ever know.
- 28:22Speaker 1: Let's not get crazy.
- 28:23Speaker 7: Come for the Hoops Talk. Stay for his list of
- 28:25Speaker 7: the day.
- 28:26Speaker 1: My list today.
- 28:27Speaker 4: Here's OC with basketball savant Gordy Chiesa on the Sean
- 28:31Speaker 4: O'Connell Show.
- 28:34Speaker 2: Oh, courtesy of Aladdin Industries, we get a chance to
- 28:37Speaker 2: catch up with Gordy Chiesa here on a Thursday. Happens
- 28:40Speaker 2: to be the day after the Utah Jazz, a remade roster,
- 28:46Speaker 2: rounding out of a several-season-long tanking ex-escapade. They had their
- 28:52Speaker 2: first game on the road against the Memphis Grizzlies. Not
- 28:55Speaker 2: the result that the most optimistic Utah Jazz fans were
- 28:58Speaker 2: looking for.
- 28:58Speaker 1: 103-123 loss, Memphis Grizzlies. outscoring the Jazz by 20 points.
- 29:04Speaker 2: And we'll get to the bottom of the how and
- 29:06Speaker 2: why with Gordy Chiesa right now. Hi, Gordy.
- 29:09Speaker 1: How are you?
- 29:10Speaker 8: Sean, I'm doing well. Thank you. The first thing is
- 29:13Speaker 8: let's not panic about the Jazz. It's only one game. However,
- 29:18Speaker 8: so far in the one game with how they played,
- 29:21Speaker 8: they were surprised that the Grizzlies played so hard defensively.
- 29:26Speaker 8: And that's the one thing, Sean, whether it's preseason in
- 29:29Speaker 8: the NFL or preseason in the NBA, you could never
- 29:32Speaker 8: assimilate the intensity of a real game. Even though you
- 29:36Speaker 8: play some practice games, it's not the same. And the
- 29:40Speaker 8: Jets have to understand that this is serious as far
- 29:43Speaker 8: as the physicality of it. All right, Ty Jerome. Most
- 29:47Speaker 8: people never heard of Ty Jerome. And all of us
- 29:51Speaker 8: in basketball, yes, we have. He was a first-round pick
- 29:56Speaker 8: as far as back in– 2019 out of Virginia, and
- 30:02Speaker 8: they were NCAA champions. And so he has a background
- 30:06Speaker 8: as far as winning. His problem has been he's been
- 30:11Speaker 8: on situations where the team is always rebuilding. He's always
- 30:15Speaker 8: out there. He got injured. And the last point about,
- 30:17Speaker 8: before I say statistics, is that, Sean, do you realize
- 30:20Speaker 8: he's an alumni of the G League?
- 30:23Speaker 7: Twice.
- 30:23Speaker 8: He played with the Northern Arizona Suns, meaning the Phoenix Suns,
- 30:27Speaker 8: and the OKC Blue, meaning the Thunder. So let's fast
- 30:31Speaker 8: forward it. So now he gets a chance in Grizzlies.
- 30:33Speaker 8: He was hurt last year. He gets 45 points last night,
- 30:37Speaker 8: but it's how he gets them. It's what we call
- 30:40Speaker 8: a guy that has dribble integrity, where he doesn't over-dribble.
- 30:45Speaker 8: He knows what he's doing. He has command of the ball,
- 30:48Speaker 8: and he plays at a certain pace, and the Jazz
- 30:51Speaker 8: last night couldn't speed him up.
- 30:55Speaker 2: So when you look at a poor performance in this
- 30:58Speaker 2: one game sample size with 81 more to go before
- 31:02Speaker 2: we really have a fully clear idea of exactly what
- 31:05Speaker 2: this Utah jazz team is going to be with Darren Peterson,
- 31:09Speaker 2: you know, and ace Bailey and hopefully not long-term Jackson
- 31:13Speaker 2: Hayes situation. How do you, how do you manage it
- 31:17Speaker 2: in the locker room and how do you manage it
- 31:20Speaker 2: internally and your coaching staff and say, all right, guys,
- 31:24Speaker 2: We didn't think it was going to be a 20-point loss,
- 31:26Speaker 2: but we knew some of this. We knew that we
- 31:28Speaker 2: were down a center or a couple of centers that
- 31:31Speaker 2: could have helped us in an effort like this one.
- 31:34Speaker 2: You don't want to overreact to anything, but you don't
- 31:36Speaker 2: want to accept that this is the result because that's
- 31:40Speaker 2: not what this year is supposed to be. From a
- 31:43Speaker 2: game-to-game standpoint, how do you handle it?
- 31:46Speaker 8: Where you challenge the players. For example, Larry Markin and
- 31:50Speaker 8: Jaron Jackson and Jackson Hayes had a total of one
- 31:54Speaker 8: offensive rebound the whole game. So Sean, our beloved former colleague, frankly,
- 31:59Speaker 8: he's just hitting me all the time. You know, Gordy,
- 32:01Speaker 8: a dead man can get a rebound because the ball
- 32:03Speaker 8: might bounce through his grave site. And that just shows
- 32:09Speaker 8: you that the lack of effort on the boards. The
- 32:12Speaker 8: Jazz had a rebound by 17 last night. And so
- 32:16Speaker 8: those guys got to come to challenge where they have
- 32:19Speaker 8: to go to the boards to play. The second part
- 32:21Speaker 8: of it is that they have to be more engaged defensively.
- 32:25Speaker 8: This is the Achilles heel for the Jazz. They've got
- 32:27Speaker 8: to get after it. So I would take it personal
- 32:30Speaker 8: if I'm a Jazz permanent player and Tyrone Jerome got
- 32:36Speaker 8: all those baskets against me, I would definitely be ready
- 32:39Speaker 8: to play tomorrow night.
- 32:44Speaker 2: Darren Peterson relatively quiet in his regular season debut. What
- 32:49Speaker 2: did you see from him that you liked, and what
- 32:51Speaker 2: did you see that you know he's going to be
- 32:52Speaker 2: working on?
- 32:53Speaker 8: Well, I didn't like it all. He only took one
- 32:56Speaker 8: shot in the second half last night. That can't happen.
- 33:00Speaker 8: He had 9.3 assists. That guy's got talent, even though
- 33:04Speaker 8: he's young. So he has to be able to get
- 33:06Speaker 8: the ball in space and also play. not over-dribble. And
- 33:11Speaker 8: last night, again, as I mentioned about Ty Jerome not over-dribbling,
- 33:16Speaker 8: the Jets, historically, they did last night. So Darren Pease
- 33:19Speaker 8: has to be more involved. So does Ace Bailey. And
- 33:22Speaker 8: the way to do that is to run the floor offensively,
- 33:26Speaker 8: sprint into offense, and be catch-ready. When you make that catch,
- 33:31Speaker 8: make a quick decision. Pass, drive, or shoot. Don't pass
- 33:35Speaker 8: and hold. So what I like about Darren Pease in
- 33:38Speaker 8: one is talent. And it's only his first game. He's
- 33:40Speaker 8: a young fella. He's got to be able to get
- 33:42Speaker 8: more involved. And also his teammates have to help him.
- 33:45Speaker 8: So he's a young guy, which means that your other
- 33:48Speaker 8: teammates that are much more experienced, that they have to
- 33:51Speaker 8: be an encourager of get the ball to him in
- 33:53Speaker 8: the open floor to let him showcase his natural ability,
- 33:57Speaker 8: both him and Ace Bailey, because they're the future right now.
- 34:00Speaker 8: but Larry Malkin has played better, so does Jaron Jackson.
- 34:03Speaker 8: He struggled last night where, besides no offensive rebounds, he
- 34:07Speaker 8: has five turnovers. He returned home to Beale Street, meaning Memphis,
- 34:13Speaker 8: but he didn't come to really be aggressive on the
- 34:16Speaker 8: board or in the game right now. So they'll learn
- 34:19Speaker 8: from this, even though it's painful.
- 34:23Speaker 2: Lowry won for seven from three. Darren Peterson was 0
- 34:29Speaker 2: for 1 from 3. Bryce Sensabaugh 0 for 2. Kyle
- 34:33Speaker 2: Filipowski 0 for 1. The team overall shot 34%. And
- 34:38Speaker 2: we've had some form of this conversation many, many times
- 34:42Speaker 2: over the years, Gordy. What is the appropriate role for
- 34:45Speaker 2: the three-point shot in this Jazz offense, knowing the personnel
- 34:50Speaker 2: that you've got?
- 34:52Speaker 8: Well, the role should be swing, swing, pass. So in
- 34:55Speaker 8: other words, you want to shoot when the ball is
- 34:58Speaker 8: moving towards you versus what? Dribbling into a three-point shot.
- 35:03Speaker 8: And so that's absolutely critical where you're shooting more with fluidity,
- 35:09Speaker 8: in team rhythm, and that when the ball does miss
- 35:12Speaker 8: on a three-point shot, the rebounders can be able to
- 35:17Speaker 8: chase down the ball on a long miss and get
- 35:20Speaker 8: a second-chance opportunity. And that's why it was so alarming
- 35:24Speaker 8: how the Jets are missing from three and that they
- 35:27Speaker 8: still didn't get a rebound on a long, errant shot.
- 35:32Speaker 8: And so what you probably would be is they shoot
- 35:35Speaker 8: more at a rhythm. But the Jets last night struggled.
- 35:38Speaker 8: It was defensively and on the boards. Just the nature
- 35:41Speaker 8: of physicality. It's hard to assimilate in an NBA game.
- 35:47Speaker 8: The intensity of it. It was the first game. Both
- 35:49Speaker 8: teams had anxiety, but the Grizzlies, me being at home,
- 35:54Speaker 8: they performed much better. And let's not forget about Cam Boozer.
- 35:58Speaker 8: Cam Boozer, again, a rookie like Darren Peterson. Cam was
- 36:02Speaker 8: the third pick. Darren was the second pick of the
- 36:04Speaker 8: draft last year. He had anxiety also. Boozer goes from
- 36:07Speaker 8: the floor, 2 for 15, probably his worst shooting night
- 36:10Speaker 8: of his life, 0 for 6 from threes, but he
- 36:13Speaker 8: did contribute 11 rebounds and five dimes. And so this
- 36:17Speaker 8: is a whole different deal as far as when you're
- 36:20Speaker 8: a young player in the NBA, you can't imagine how
- 36:24Speaker 8: hard it is for these young guys to play through physicality.
- 36:29Speaker 8: And often in a game, they shoot backwards instead of forward.
- 36:33Speaker 8: And that's where you've got to learn how to do
- 36:34Speaker 8: is you've got to be aggressor, but you can't be
- 36:37Speaker 8: out of control. And so it's a learning experience. It's
- 36:41Speaker 8: often painful. Don't make it fatal.
- 36:44Speaker 2: Gordy Chiesa is our guest here talking Utah jazz basketball.
- 36:47Speaker 2: As they start the season with a 1 0 3
- 36:50Speaker 2: 1 23 loss to the Memphis Grizzlies.
- 36:55Speaker 1: On the road last night. And then, you know, they
- 36:57Speaker 1: come back tomorrow night.
- 36:59Speaker 2: They'll be at home, the home debut against the Pelicans
- 37:02Speaker 2: team that I think is vulnerable. Do you expect the
- 37:07Speaker 2: Utah jazz to have a bounce back and get their
- 37:09Speaker 2: first win of the season tomorrow night?
- 37:11Speaker 8: Yes, very much.
- 37:13Speaker 3: Very much.
- 37:13Speaker 8: A judge will respond to the challenge being at home.
- 37:16Speaker 8: And speaking of the Pelicans, they lost last night in
- 37:19Speaker 8: the Big Easy to the Pacers. They're winning the whole
- 37:22Speaker 8: game in the fourth quarter. The Pacers had a 15-3
- 37:26Speaker 8: momentum run, and it turned it around. The same players
- 37:30Speaker 8: for the Pacers now are out there. I mean, Halliburton
- 37:35Speaker 8: did a good job as far as in that comeback.
- 37:37Speaker 8: From the Pelicans' point of view, Deshante Murray's still there,
- 37:41Speaker 8: so is Zion Williamson. So Zion Williamson, we know he's
- 37:44Speaker 8: a major jumper, only gets three rebounds last night. And
- 37:47Speaker 8: so I'm making this point about all these big guys,
- 37:50Speaker 8: you know, where they play outside, but you want to
- 37:53Speaker 8: respect your teammates by crashing the boards. And so the
- 37:57Speaker 8: Pelicans are in a rebuild. The Jazz are not. And
- 38:02Speaker 8: so we'll see what they do tomorrow night at the
- 38:05Speaker 8: Delta Center. You know, before I forget, is that the
- 38:08Speaker 8: Jazz is going to do over, though, against the Grizzlies.
- 38:10Speaker 8: They play them real soon again. They play the Grizzlies
- 38:13Speaker 8: at the Delta Center next Monday night. So they're going
- 38:16Speaker 8: to see Ty Jerome and the fellas right away here.
- 38:19Speaker 8: The Jazz is starting tomorrow night a five-game homestand. So
- 38:23Speaker 8: hopefully the Jazz can get some wins at home, which
- 38:25Speaker 8: they should, and it should be tomorrow night. How do
- 38:28Speaker 8: you beat the Pelicans? One, by moving the ball. Two,
- 38:31Speaker 8: by running the floor. Three, by getting after the perimeter
- 38:36Speaker 8: guys offensively. I mean, Deshante Murray and Jordan Poole and
- 38:44Speaker 8: all the other players they have, but also be able
- 38:46Speaker 8: to play offensively. with force without over-fouling. So it should
- 38:51Speaker 8: be a good game tomorrow night at the Delta Center.
- 38:52Speaker 8: Before I forget, it's a 7.30 start versus 7 o'clock
- 38:55Speaker 8: tomorrow night.
- 38:59Speaker 2: Gordy, around the NBA, we saw on opening night, we
- 39:02Speaker 2: saw the Philadelphia 76ers debut for LeBron James. Going to
- 39:07Speaker 2: be 42 in a couple of months and still formidable.
- 39:11Speaker 2: Even when you ask him to play the five, what do.
- 39:13Speaker 1: You think of him at center?
- 39:16Speaker 8: I think it's wonderful. They played as five. They went
- 39:19Speaker 8: small during the game to take out Joel Embiid, and
- 39:22Speaker 8: LeBron's playing five. And at age 42, it's almost better
- 39:26Speaker 8: being a five-boy. There's less running as a five-man. just
- 39:30Speaker 8: generally speaking, because you're more in the lane. You're part
- 39:33Speaker 8: of a defensive rotation. But it's not as much as
- 39:36Speaker 8: you would be on perimeter where you keep flying around
- 39:40Speaker 8: to try to challenge shots. So LeBron at five also offensively,
- 39:44Speaker 8: that creates such a great mismatch because most people can't
- 39:48Speaker 8: guard him anyway. But as a five-man trying to guard him,
- 39:51Speaker 8: it makes the other team have to match down small
- 39:54Speaker 8: or LeBron can take absolutely advantage of it. So it's
- 39:58Speaker 8: smart by them. Sean, I want to mention about– because
- 40:01Speaker 8: the Jazz played them on Sunday. The Jazz played tomorrow night.
- 40:04Speaker 8: the Pelicans in the Delta center and have a wonderful
- 40:07Speaker 8: game at three o'clock on Sunday. Sean, during the NFL,
- 40:11Speaker 8: they're playing three o'clock Sunday versus guess who? The Lakers.
- 40:15Speaker 8: So Walker Kessler, Walker Kessler had his first game in
- 40:19Speaker 8: a Laker uniform and he shot, he scored 26 points,
- 40:24Speaker 8: nine rebounds, two blocks, but he shot 12 for 12
- 40:28Speaker 8: from the field. Obviously they're all mostly law passes from
- 40:31Speaker 8: Luka Doncic, And he responded perfectly. And the second best
- 40:37Speaker 8: ever as far as single game percentage of Laker history,
- 40:42Speaker 8: second only to Wilt Chamberlain when Wilt had 14 for
- 40:45Speaker 8: 14 field goals back in March 1969. So he had
- 40:50Speaker 8: a great debut, Walker Tesla. Let's hope in Jazz's point
- 40:53Speaker 8: of view that they slow him down at the rim
- 40:57Speaker 8: on a Sunday afternoon when the Jazz play the Lakers
- 40:59Speaker 8: here in Salt Lake City.
- 41:02Speaker 2: James just put this in the notes. Most dunks by
- 41:04Speaker 2: a Laker since 2003. And that was Shaquille O'Neal. So
- 41:10Speaker 2: Walker Kessler, one game numbers right up there next to Shaq.
- 41:17Speaker 1: And you just said Wilt. So pretty good.
- 41:19Speaker 3: Yeah, Wilt.
- 41:19Speaker 8: Yeah, Wilt was 14 for 14 back in March 69.
- 41:23Speaker 8: And Sean, in case you weren't there, I know you
- 41:26Speaker 8: played in 1983. But 1969, that's called the age of Aquarius.
- 41:32Speaker 1: It's a great song.
- 41:33Speaker 8: Back in 69.
- 41:35Speaker 1: What's that song called? Is it called the?
- 41:37Speaker 8: That's exactly right. That's right. By Fifth Dimension, Adrian Aquarius.
- 41:41Speaker 6: There you go.
- 41:41Speaker 8: That's where it's from. And that's the last time Will
- 41:44Speaker 8: did it back in 69 in March. So Walker Kessler.
- 41:48Speaker 8: And in that game also against the Golden State Warriors,
- 41:51Speaker 8: both teams are shorthanded. Lucas Dontage was talking, Sean, Slovenian
- 41:56Speaker 8: trash at the rookie Axel Lindenberg of the Warriors. And
- 42:03Speaker 8: so they're going back and forth. And let's say the
- 42:05Speaker 8: least that Luca got the advantage of it. He played
- 42:08Speaker 8: a great game with his points totally and also eight
- 42:12Speaker 8: rebounds and seven assists. So again, the plot thickens in
- 42:16Speaker 8: the NBA. NBA basketball, there's nothing like it. There's so
- 42:19Speaker 8: many drama before the game, during the game, and after
- 42:22Speaker 8: the game. And that makes it so interesting.
- 42:26Speaker 1: Gordy, what's your list today?
- 42:28Speaker 8: Okay, I'm going to list today, and you talk about
- 42:30Speaker 8: LeBron James, and he's on this list. This list today
- 42:34Speaker 8: is the most career by NBA players career-wise registering 20-plus
- 42:41Speaker 8: points and 10 assists in the same game. So 20
- 42:46Speaker 8: and 10 in the same game career-wise.
- 42:49Speaker 3: Quickly, attributes.
- 42:50Speaker 8: One, you need ball skills. Two, you have to be
- 42:53Speaker 8: a goodwill, eyeful passer. Three, range shooter. Four, physical driver
- 42:59Speaker 8: and finisher. And five, frequent free throw maker. 20 and
- 43:05Speaker 8: 10 as far as games. 12th all time. Steve Nash
- 43:10Speaker 8: did it 152 times. Tied for 10. Kevin Johnson and
- 43:14Speaker 8: Tim Hardaway Sr., they did it 170 times. Number nine,
- 43:19Speaker 8: John Stockton did it 184 times. 20 points and 10
- 43:24Speaker 8: assists in an NBA game. All right, number eight. Eight,
- 43:27Speaker 8: this will change every single game. It seems like Nikolai
- 43:31Speaker 8: Jokic is eighth all-time as a point center. He's done
- 43:35Speaker 8: it 187 times, 20 and 10. Number seven, he did
- 43:39Speaker 8: it last night with the Washington Wizards to help Anthony
- 43:43Speaker 8: Davis have a great game. Trey Young has done it
- 43:46Speaker 8: 196 times, 20 and 10 games. Number six. Isaiah Thomas,
- 43:53Speaker 8: done it 209. Number five, Chris Paul, 229 times. Number four,
- 44:00Speaker 8: Matthew Johnson is tied with Russell Westbrook, both three and
- 44:04Speaker 8: four all time. They've both done it 263 times. The
- 44:09Speaker 8: second greatest player as far as 20 and 10 games
- 44:13Speaker 8: is James Harden. with 266, and LeBron James, number one,
- 44:18Speaker 8: as a point forward, and you're calling him, Sean, as
- 44:21Speaker 8: a point center. Point center. He's done it 299 times.
- 44:28Speaker 8: So LeBron might do it tonight, get his 300th time,
- 44:32Speaker 8: where he has a 20-10 game. Let's put it in
- 44:34Speaker 8: just context in jazz basketball. the degree of difficulty of
- 44:40Speaker 8: doing this. Keontae George is in his fourth year, and
- 44:44Speaker 8: he's a good player for the Jazz. Keontae George has
- 44:47Speaker 8: only had one game of scoring 20 points and 10
- 44:52Speaker 8: dimes in an NBA game. That's how hard it is,
- 44:55Speaker 8: and his list is really of guys that are really
- 44:57Speaker 8: so talented and know how to play offense, both scoring
- 45:02Speaker 8: and passing. Sean, this is my list of today.
- 45:06Speaker 2: Oh, Gordy, we love a good list, and we've got many,
- 45:10Speaker 2: many more days of them as NBA season is officially back.
- 45:16Speaker 2: Utah Jazz start off 0-1, but plenty, 81 more regular
- 45:20Speaker 2: season games to play, all right? I didn't do a
- 45:24Speaker 2: good job of asking you this. We've seen the projections
- 45:27Speaker 2: for the Utah Jazz. This will be the last thing, Gordy.
- 45:30Speaker 2: Anywhere from play-in team to the highest I think I've
- 45:33Speaker 2: seen in a publication is a potential seven seed in
- 45:37Speaker 2: the upcoming playoffs. Where does Gordie Chiesa put the ceiling
- 45:41Speaker 2: for this Utah Jazz roster?
- 45:44Speaker 8: I think they're going to be a play-in team. So
- 45:47Speaker 8: I would say either seven or eight. And that'd be
- 45:50Speaker 8: great for the Jazz. If they get to play in tournament,
- 45:54Speaker 8: get some wins, you just never know. So I would
- 45:57Speaker 8: say they're definitely a play-in team. They have talent, offensive.
- 46:01Speaker 8: They can score the ball, and yet they're able to
- 46:03Speaker 8: guard consistently.
- 46:06Speaker 1: Gordy, thanks for your time. Always appreciate you, my friend.
- 46:09Speaker 8: Thanks, Sean. Peace out. Stay well.
- 46:11Speaker 2: Gordy Chiesa, brought to you by our friends at Aladdin Industries. Reminder,
- 46:16Speaker 2: Nickelback is coming to the Delta Center April 22nd. We're
- 46:19Speaker 2: giving away a pair of tickets every day this week
- 46:21Speaker 2: during Topical Trivia. That'll be at 145. Tune in for
- 46:25Speaker 2: your chance to win. All right, we've got a PGA
- 46:29Speaker 2: Tour leaderboard update coming, and the guest picker, the celebrity
- 46:33Speaker 2: guest picker for College Game Day in Salt Lake City
- 46:35Speaker 2: has been revealed.
- 46:37Speaker 1: Utah fans, you're going to like it. CSPN 700, 92.1 FM.
- 46:45Speaker 4: You're listening to the Sean O'Connell Show from the Murdoch
- 46:48Speaker 4: Hyundai Studio of ESPN 792.1 FM.
- 46:59Speaker 2: The celebrity guest picker for the University of Utah versus
- 47:03Speaker 2: Houston College football game day appearance has been selected.
- 47:11Speaker 1: NFL player with Utah ties.
- 47:15Speaker 2: And perhaps most importantly, owner of what I think is
- 47:19Speaker 2: the best dark mode performance in the history of Utah football.
- 47:25Speaker 2: Buffalo Bills tight end Dalton Kincaid will be the celebrity
- 47:28Speaker 2: guest picker on college game day. A little nod to
- 47:33Speaker 2: his 16 targets, 16 receptions, 270 yard.
- 47:35Speaker 6: Wait.
- 47:43Speaker 1: Two 70 and a touchdown.
- 47:45Speaker 2: Most importantly for me, the most impressive sideline catch I
- 47:48Speaker 2: have ever seen in college football. When cam rising found
- 47:52Speaker 2: him down the East sideline going toward the North end
- 47:58Speaker 2: zone for just an absolute beauty of a catch. Dalton
- 48:03Speaker 2: Kincaid is your celebrity guest picker on Saturday.
- 48:08Speaker 1: It's well done.
- 48:09Speaker 5: Um, What's crazy about his 16 for 16, which of
- 48:14Speaker 5: course will be legendary through forever and university of Utah
- 48:19Speaker 5: football lore against that team USC, right? Cam rising may
- 48:26Speaker 5: have had the second best in the same game. He
- 48:28Speaker 5: may have had the second most impressive best dark mode
- 48:32Speaker 5: game performance ever. with his incredible game that same night,
- 48:37Speaker 5: as they had to come back from two scores down
- 48:39Speaker 5: to beat USC, and he had, of course, the famous
- 48:41Speaker 5: two-point conversion. I love that Dalton's the guy, and we
- 48:45Speaker 5: should be celebrating that he's coming back and is going
- 48:48Speaker 5: to be honored this way as Celebrity Guest Picker for
- 48:50Speaker 5: game day. But as you were talking about that, and
- 48:53Speaker 5: I thought about Cam Rising, too, I hope someday soon
- 48:56Speaker 5: we get Cam Rising in that role at some point,
- 48:59Speaker 5: at a game day or some other kind of, celebration
- 49:02Speaker 5: at rice.
- 49:02Speaker 2: I saw, I saw some people putting his name out
- 49:05Speaker 2: there as a potential candidate to be the celebrity guest picker.
- 49:08Speaker 2: And the problem they have on the game day set
- 49:13Speaker 2: is that you have to select someone that everybody knows.
- 49:16Speaker 1: And I actually don't even think everybody knows.
- 49:18Speaker 2: Dalton Kincaid, but because he's an active NFL player on
- 49:21Speaker 2: a buy this week, it makes a lot more sense.
- 49:24Speaker 1: Cam rising. I would love to see him sitting up there.
- 49:30Speaker 2: I just don't think that nationally game day would ever
- 49:33Speaker 2: make that decision because you know, it's a, it's a
- 49:37Speaker 2: show for the entire audience.
- 49:39Speaker 1: That's a good point by you.
- 49:40Speaker 5: I hope that, I hope that it's someday that's something
- 49:44Speaker 5: that will end up being able to happen, but that's
- 49:47Speaker 5: a good point by you. Maybe it won't because he,
- 49:49Speaker 5: maybe it's going to be obscure to the national audience.
- 49:52Speaker 1: Uh, by the.
- 49:52Speaker 2: Way, 34 yards, two 34, two 34, not two 70, uh,
- 49:57Speaker 2: two 34 for Don Kincaid. He is your celebrity guest picker.
- 50:03Speaker 2: A lot of pressure on him. Steve young went 10
- 50:06Speaker 2: for 10 on his picks.
- 50:08Speaker 7: Oh, he did.
- 50:09Speaker 2: He really, he went 10 for 10 on his college
- 50:12Speaker 2: football Saturday predictions. Is that a record for the celebrity guest?
- 50:15Speaker 2: It can't get better than that. So yeah, I mean,
- 50:17Speaker 2: it's a record for like volume.
- 50:19Speaker 5: Like maybe guys have been perfect before, but not that many,
- 50:22Speaker 5: like not 10 games. Maybe like, I wonder if that's
- 50:26Speaker 5: a record, not just in percentage, but like, games picked correctly.
- 50:30Speaker 1: That's it.
- 50:30Speaker 2: That's incredible by Steve Young. Also much to the chagrin
- 50:34Speaker 2: of Utah fans. That was the highest rated college game
- 50:38Speaker 2: day episode in like the last five years because huge
- 50:44Speaker 2: game and every Mormon in America was watching. And I mean,
- 50:49Speaker 2: I think it also speaks to the power of Notre Dame.
- 50:52Speaker 2: Cause I don't know how many Notre Dame and how
- 50:54Speaker 2: many times game day has been on, been at Notre
- 50:57Speaker 2: Dame's campus. I know that they typically go to sec
- 51:00Speaker 2: a lot, but the fact that it's a, I mean,
- 51:03Speaker 2: Notre Dame obviously has a huge audience too. So both
- 51:06Speaker 2: of those factors combining probably there, that game's going to
- 51:09Speaker 2: be the most watched game in the big 12 conference
- 51:11Speaker 2: this season.
- 51:12Speaker 1: It peaked at 13.2 million viewers. Oh yeah. It's a
- 51:16Speaker 1: huge college football audience. I would hope.
- 51:18Speaker 5: That the holy war is the most watched big 12
- 51:22Speaker 5: conference game of the year, but I don't think it's
- 51:23Speaker 5: going to top BYU Notre Dame.
- 51:25Speaker 1: No, I mean, come on. It's Notre Dame.
- 51:26Speaker 4: Yeah.
- 51:27Speaker 1: You can't, you can't ask for that.
- 51:28Speaker 4: All right.
- 51:28Speaker 2: Real quick, a PGA tour leaderboard update from the Bermuda championship.
- 51:33Speaker 2: These are brought to you by, you went to golf
- 51:34Speaker 2: by worldwide golf in store. They've got free custom fittings,
- 51:38Speaker 2: or you can shop online at worldwide golf.com.
- 51:41Speaker 1: What's that leaderboard look like right now? Here we go.
- 51:47Speaker 5: Silverman is your leader. Ben Silverman is your leader at
- 51:52Speaker 5: eight under. He's tied at the top of the leaderboard
- 51:55Speaker 5: right now with a couple other guys.
- 51:57Speaker 1: Trying to see if Tony Finau is in the field here.
- 52:00Speaker 5: I think he's got to play in a lot of
- 52:05Speaker 5: these tournaments because he needs the FedEx Cup points, right,
- 52:08Speaker 5: to keep the tour card. Doesn't look like he's in
- 52:10Speaker 5: the field, though, from what I can see. Some of
- 52:13Speaker 5: the other guys in the top ten. We've got tied
- 52:17Speaker 5: for fourth, Mackenzie Hughes, one shot off the lead at
- 52:20Speaker 5: seven under. And Eric Cole is in the next group,
- 52:26Speaker 5: tied for seventh at six under. Zach Blair, there's a
- 52:30Speaker 5: Utah player on tour, if you know, you know, from
- 52:32Speaker 5: Utah Golf Radio. He's at six under, tied for seventh,
- 52:37Speaker 5: just two shots off the lead. So I don't see
- 52:38Speaker 5: Tony Finau in the field, but Zach Blair, Utah player,
- 52:44Speaker 5: he's near the top of the leaderboard. So that's your
- 52:46Speaker 5: PGA tour leaderboard update brought to you by you went
- 52:48Speaker 5: to golf.
- 52:48Speaker 1: This is what in Bermuda I would skip if right.
- 52:52Speaker 2: The Bermuda triangle. I'm not trying to get lost. I
- 52:55Speaker 2: feel like we heard about that a lot more as kids.
- 52:58Speaker 1: Oh yeah. And now the Bermuda triangle, nobody even talks
- 53:01Speaker 1: about it anymore.
- 53:01Speaker 5: Maybe it's because the PGA tour has done an event
- 53:05Speaker 5: there every year. And they're like, we've actually debunked it.
- 53:09Speaker 5: Players don't get lost.
- 53:09Speaker 1: I think it was the, the, the OG conspiracy theory.
- 53:12Speaker 6: Yeah.
- 53:13Speaker 2: And everybody learned it from like magazines and books and stuff.
- 53:17Speaker 2: And then when the internet came along and we got
- 53:19Speaker 2: exposed to every other conspiracy theory, The Bermuda triangle just
- 53:22Speaker 2: faded into the background.
- 53:23Speaker 5: I feel like DB Cooper is another one of those
- 53:27Speaker 5: that like, you never hear about DB Cooper.
- 53:29Speaker 1: Never.
- 53:29Speaker 5: And that was such a, and that was before I
- 53:32Speaker 5: was born, but you know, watching like nineties sitcoms or whatever,
- 53:36Speaker 5: they would, it would get brought up all the time.
- 53:38Speaker 5: It used to be such a bigger thing in pop culture.
- 53:42Speaker 1: All right.
- 53:42Speaker 2: We got to take a break. Eric Weddle joins us
- 53:44Speaker 2: next on the Sean O'Connell show. It's ESPN 700 at
- 53:46Speaker 2: 92 on FM.
- 53:52Speaker 4: This is the Sean O'Connell Show, your home of the
- 53:55Speaker 4: best inside of your youths. Let's get back to OC
- 53:58Speaker 4: from the Murdoch Chevrolet studio of ESPN 700 at 92.1 FM.
- 54:02Speaker 7: Welcome to hour.
- 54:03Speaker 2: Number two of the Sean O'Connell Show. Welcome in the
- 54:12Speaker 2: Utah football legend and the Super Bowl champion and the
- 54:15Speaker 2: head coach of the 7-1 Rancho Bernardo Broncos, Eric Weddle.
- 54:21Speaker 1: Joins us once again. Hello, sir. How are you?
- 54:25Speaker 3: Living the dream, baby. Living the dream. We got a
- 54:29Speaker 3: big game Friday night. 7-1 playoff implications on the line.
- 54:34Speaker 3: Maybe a home playoff game. We'll see how high we
- 54:37Speaker 3: can go. We're playing one of the top teams in
- 54:40Speaker 3: the state, Mission Hills. Had a big win last week.
- 54:44Speaker 3: And then Saturday night, our Ute. versus the Houston. What
- 54:50Speaker 3: are they? The cougars?
- 54:51Speaker 8: Yes.
- 54:53Speaker 3: Yeah. Those cougars, man.
- 54:57Speaker 1: You know, you know, it's crazy. I I've been embarrassed.
- 55:01Speaker 1: I didn't know this already.
- 55:02Speaker 2: I'm 43 years old, but we looked it up today
- 55:05Speaker 2: or this week. Why the Houston teams are called cougars.
- 55:11Speaker 2: Cause there's no mountains near Houston. There's no mountains in Houston.
- 55:14Speaker 2: So how do they get mountain lions or whatever? First
- 55:17Speaker 2: of all, there's no Cougars nearby, which is a dumb reason. Also,
- 55:24Speaker 2: they were named in the 1920s, and the reason they
- 55:27Speaker 2: got that name is because a coach, the former football
- 55:32Speaker 2: coach from Washington State University, got a job at the
- 55:36Speaker 2: University of Houston, and they didn't have team names. So
- 55:39Speaker 2: he's just like, let's name them Cougars like my old school.
- 55:43Speaker 2: Is that not the worst way to get a name
- 55:45Speaker 2: you've ever heard in your life?
- 55:47Speaker 3: They should disband that name and find a new one.
- 55:50Speaker 1: They absolutely should.
- 55:52Speaker 3: 100%.
- 55:52Speaker 6: It's crazy.
- 55:53Speaker 3: It's absolutely crazy.
- 55:54Speaker 8: How embarrassing.
- 55:56Speaker 3: All right.
- 55:57Speaker 2: So we've been trying to figure out how to feel
- 55:59Speaker 2: now for a few days about that win over Colorado,
- 56:03Speaker 2: because ultimately it's a win, but man, was it ugly.
- 56:07Speaker 2: What were your thoughts on Utah versus Colorado, where they
- 56:09Speaker 2: did improve to 6-0?
- 56:13Speaker 3: Yeah, I mean, obviously it wasn't how we finished. I
- 56:17Speaker 3: think you give some credit to Colorado, right? Like, it's
- 56:22Speaker 3: okay to be in the game and the other team
- 56:25Speaker 3: executes at a higher level at points throughout that game.
- 56:28Speaker 3: And like Coach Scali said, within the first 60 seconds
- 56:33Speaker 3: of that postgame is we probably shouldn't have won the
- 56:37Speaker 3: way we played at the end of that game. And
- 56:40Speaker 3: the second half and just some– some of the things
- 56:42Speaker 3: that crept in, you know, whether it's schematically or just execution.
- 56:48Speaker 3: And I think, honestly, like, I think it's okay. It's
- 56:54Speaker 3: better to learn in a win than it is in
- 56:56Speaker 3: a loss. And especially you look over the history of
- 57:02Speaker 3: Utah in the last, I don't know, maybe if you
- 57:04Speaker 3: look back 10 years, and any time we have a
- 57:08Speaker 3: home-ranked opponent coming in, we usually– played down a tad
- 57:14Speaker 3: the week before. And that's human nature. You're still learning
- 57:17Speaker 3: the dynamics of this team, the leadership and the professionalism.
- 57:21Speaker 3: And as a coaching staff and coaches, pinpointing how we
- 57:25Speaker 3: need to motivate and inspire and also tighten the screws
- 57:30Speaker 3: on some things. So am I worried? No. They have
- 57:33Speaker 3: to go play great, and they have to play top-notch
- 57:36Speaker 3: football to beat this team because this team is dang
- 57:39Speaker 3: good coming in.
- 57:41Speaker 2: So we've talked a lot about pressure and the lack
- 57:44Speaker 2: thereof for this Utah football team. And, you know, you're
- 57:48Speaker 2: a guy who played in the defensive backfield in this
- 57:51Speaker 2: defense and he played a lot of man coverage. And,
- 57:54Speaker 2: you know, when you're not able to get to the quarterback.
- 57:58Speaker 2: bad things can happen when you're in man, when you're
- 58:00Speaker 2: not able to get to the quarterback, bad things can
- 58:02Speaker 2: happen when you're in zone also, but it feels like,
- 58:05Speaker 2: it feels like this is something that they've got a remedy.
- 58:08Speaker 2: And I don't know if they've got the horses to
- 58:10Speaker 2: remedy it. You can't change your defense halfway through a season.
- 58:14Speaker 2: So Eric Weddle, genius defensive mind, how do you solve
- 58:18Speaker 2: this problem where you still get some pressure on quarterbacks,
- 58:21Speaker 2: but you don't have to bring an extra body or
- 58:23Speaker 2: two every single time.
- 58:27Speaker 3: Yeah, it's, You know, I think how do I– you
- 58:37Speaker 3: said it perfectly. We are who we are at our core.
- 58:41Speaker 3: We have certain principles. We play certain techniques and coverages.
- 58:47Speaker 3: And I think it's understanding leveraging angles, right, from a
- 58:53Speaker 3: defensive back perspective. I think also from a coaching side perspective, uh,
- 58:59Speaker 3: situational football and call wise that could help out the
- 59:03Speaker 3: secondary and help out the defense, Basically, a two-score game,
- 59:09Speaker 3: we're still playing press man. That's like a cardinal sin.
- 59:14Speaker 3: I don't understand why in that situation we're still playing
- 59:19Speaker 3: those type of coverages when you want the clock as
- 59:23Speaker 3: our friend. The worst thing that can happen is if
- 59:25Speaker 3: you score quick. I know that's being talked about, so
- 59:29Speaker 3: it's It's not something that isn't. I just... You know,
- 59:35Speaker 3: and I've talked about this, and defensively and just schematically,
- 59:40Speaker 3: being a little bit more of a two-shell type coverage
- 59:44Speaker 3: defense at times would benefit us, not just for situations,
- 59:49Speaker 3: but also alleviating the man-to-man at times when we're asking
- 59:53Speaker 3: guys to play man-to-man every single play. And it's not
- 59:56Speaker 3: every single play, right? But for the majority of the
- 59:58Speaker 3: time you're playing man-to-man, you... you give breaks to guys
- 1:00:02Speaker 3: that are always in those type of it's now or never, right?
- 1:00:06Speaker 3: It's this, this one play could be the difference when
- 1:00:08Speaker 3: they're playing man to man, that's what it feels like.
- 1:00:10Speaker 3: And so any chance you can alleviate that stress for
- 1:00:14Speaker 3: a player too, or a snap or a situation, it's
- 1:00:18Speaker 3: big for the confidence of those players. So I think they'll, they'll,
- 1:00:23Speaker 3: they'll coach it up. I'm not, I'm not too worried
- 1:00:26Speaker 3: about it for the pressure and, Getting at the quarterback,
- 1:00:29Speaker 3: you don't always have to have sacks to affect the quarterback,
- 1:00:33Speaker 3: to affect the timing. But you have to get this
- 1:00:36Speaker 3: quarterback off the spot. You've got to hit him. Even
- 1:00:39Speaker 3: though you may not sack him, if you're hitting him
- 1:00:41Speaker 3: and making him think about it and speeding up his timing,
- 1:00:44Speaker 3: that is the secondary's best friend.
- 1:00:48Speaker 2: Offensively, this Utah team was, for the first time, kind
- 1:00:52Speaker 2: of bogged down in the red zone.
- 1:00:55Speaker 1: And that's been uncharacteristic.
- 1:00:57Speaker 2: They've been off to such a hot start this year.
- 1:00:59Speaker 2: They're still six for six in six games and six
- 1:01:04Speaker 2: opening drives have led to touchdowns, which is great. But
- 1:01:07Speaker 2: they had three red zone trips against Colorado that resulted
- 1:01:11Speaker 2: in two field goals and a turnover instead of touchdowns.
- 1:01:15Speaker 2: which is uncharacteristic. When you watch that happen, when you
- 1:01:18Speaker 2: see it, was that a fluke, you think? Was that
- 1:01:21Speaker 2: something Colorado did that was super special? Is there any
- 1:01:24Speaker 2: reason to believe they won't be able to get back
- 1:01:27Speaker 2: to the old ways?
- 1:01:30Speaker 3: I think it's twofold. Like, yeah, could the execution have
- 1:01:34Speaker 3: been better? Yeah, could maybe the red zone plan be better? Obviously,
- 1:01:38Speaker 3: we didn't execute and score. So as a coach, you're
- 1:01:42Speaker 3: going to look, all right, well, what– Why wasn't the
- 1:01:46Speaker 3: plan the way it was? What could I have done
- 1:01:48Speaker 3: differently and maybe put our players in a better position, right?
- 1:01:52Speaker 3: And then you got to give credit to Colorado. Like,
- 1:01:54Speaker 3: we talked about it. We didn't talk about it last
- 1:01:56Speaker 3: week because I didn't come on, but everyone knew and
- 1:01:59Speaker 3: the stats showed that Colorado had a really good defense.
- 1:02:03Speaker 3: They had a really good front. They create negative plays.
- 1:02:06Speaker 3: Tons of TFLs. And you knew that it was going
- 1:02:11Speaker 3: to be a good challenge for us. And it was, right?
- 1:02:13Speaker 6: Like, we.
- 1:02:15Speaker 3: We still put up enough points to win, right? It
- 1:02:18Speaker 3: was under our average, yeah. Could it have been more easily? Yeah,
- 1:02:21Speaker 3: it could have been. But, hey, tip your hat to
- 1:02:23Speaker 3: your opponent sometimes. It's okay to do that while also
- 1:02:28Speaker 3: understanding that we could have played better. So do I
- 1:02:30Speaker 3: think– I don't think it's going to be a problem.
- 1:02:33Speaker 3: I think when you look at Houston's defense, their run
- 1:02:37Speaker 3: defense is– Their run defense, is it good in their
- 1:02:43Speaker 3: pass defense, or is it flopped? I can't remember.
- 1:02:47Speaker 1: Houston's run defense is good. Their pass defense is bad.
- 1:02:51Speaker 3: Okay. So neither is, I think, to the level of
- 1:02:56Speaker 3: Colorado as a whole. So I think we just got
- 1:03:01Speaker 3: to understand what we are and how you score in
- 1:03:04Speaker 3: the red zone. It's creating new line of scrimmage, moving
- 1:03:08Speaker 3: people off the ball. being sound in the run game
- 1:03:11Speaker 3: and then having those, those plays drawn up for the
- 1:03:14Speaker 3: low red and, and, and got to have a situations
- 1:03:17Speaker 3: that we execute, which we've done all year. So they're
- 1:03:19Speaker 3: going to, they're going to be fine. They're going to,
- 1:03:22Speaker 3: I'm not, I'm not really worried about it. I'm more
- 1:03:24Speaker 3: concerned with how we stop Houston's offense and that quarterback
- 1:03:29Speaker 3: and that what they got going over there. Cause I
- 1:03:33Speaker 3: think it could potentially get into a back and forth game.
- 1:03:36Speaker 3: I'd rather not, but this is going to be a
- 1:03:38Speaker 3: real test and really see if we're a championship playoff
- 1:03:43Speaker 3: caliber team or if we're not.
- 1:03:45Speaker 2: How much do you alter your defensive game plan to
- 1:03:48Speaker 2: accommodate for a player, especially when that player is the quarterback?
- 1:03:54Speaker 2: Because it feels like Wegman, he's going to beat you
- 1:03:58Speaker 2: with his arm, and if he doesn't beat you with
- 1:04:00Speaker 2: his arm and you're great in coverage, but you're playing
- 1:04:03Speaker 2: man and you're, you know, Your hand is in somebody's
- 1:04:06Speaker 2: hip pocket and your eyes are on the coverage. He's
- 1:04:09Speaker 2: just going to be like, oh, nobody's looking at me.
- 1:04:10Speaker 2: I'm going to take off and run. So there's a
- 1:04:13Speaker 2: lot of ways that he can hurt you. How much
- 1:04:15Speaker 2: do you alter your game plan in order to accommodate
- 1:04:18Speaker 2: just him? Because you can spy, you can do some
- 1:04:20Speaker 2: other different things, but then you're getting out of what
- 1:04:23Speaker 2: we just talked about.
- 1:04:23Speaker 1: You're getting out of your defensive identity.
- 1:04:27Speaker 3: Yeah, it's obviously a huge, huge challenge. And, like, listen,
- 1:04:33Speaker 3: we play some top-notch quarterbacks. over the last decade. So
- 1:04:37Speaker 3: this isn't, this isn't something that's new. We've had success
- 1:04:42Speaker 3: and we've also have not had success. So looking at
- 1:04:46Speaker 3: the history and how we fared in those games is
- 1:04:49Speaker 3: something that I would revisit. And I'm sure they've looked
- 1:04:53Speaker 3: at just as a schematical point of what has been good,
- 1:04:56Speaker 3: what hasn't. Obviously the offenses are different, but when you're
- 1:04:59Speaker 3: playing a really good quarterback with, talented guys on the perimeter,
- 1:05:04Speaker 3: some things have worked, some things haven't. Really identifying that
- 1:05:08Speaker 3: and you've got to mix it up. I'm a big
- 1:05:13Speaker 3: proponent of disguising and two-shell coverage and not letting the
- 1:05:19Speaker 3: quarterback know what you're in pre-snap. I've said that my
- 1:05:24Speaker 3: whole career. I've said that on here. That's nothing new.
- 1:05:29Speaker 3: It's not like I'm getting after our Utah Utes defense.
- 1:05:33Speaker 3: That's not what I'm saying. Just that's who I am
- 1:05:35Speaker 3: in my core. If I ever coach in college, that's
- 1:05:37Speaker 3: what would be my defense, right, or a head coach.
- 1:05:40Speaker 3: That's just who I am. So you've got to understand
- 1:05:44Speaker 3: when pre-stab you see certain coverages, it's easy for a
- 1:05:48Speaker 3: quarterback to get through the progression and identify where he
- 1:05:51Speaker 3: wants to go with the concept. Does that make sense?
- 1:05:54Speaker 3: So for a quarterback and what I would hopefully see
- 1:05:58Speaker 3: on Friday night or Saturday night, is not showing the,
- 1:06:02Speaker 3: the picture. So after the snap, Speaker 0.
- 1:06:06Speaker 2: 7, Eric Weddle is our guest here on the Sean
- 1:06:08Speaker 2: O'Connell show, talking all things, Utah football coming off of Colorado,
- 1:06:12Speaker 2: when heading into this Houston matchup, a college game day,
- 1:06:16Speaker 2: you've had some experience with college game day and they're back.
- 1:06:21Speaker 1: So how do you make it not a distraction for
- 1:06:25Speaker 1: the players?
- 1:06:29Speaker 3: Honestly, I mean, it shouldn't be because you're not involved.
- 1:06:33Speaker 3: You stick with your routine. You know they're there on campus,
- 1:06:37Speaker 3: but you're not involved with it. So I think it's
- 1:06:41Speaker 3: always just the excitement that eyes are on us, they're
- 1:06:45Speaker 3: on our school, they're seeing what amazing university we are,
- 1:06:50Speaker 3: the city of Salt Lake, the people. I think we
- 1:06:53Speaker 3: recognize that. You recognize that as a player, but I
- 1:06:56Speaker 3: never felt it was a distraction. It was more so
- 1:06:58Speaker 3: like hey, the whole country is going to be watching us.
- 1:07:01Speaker 3: Let's go play great and show what we're all about.
- 1:07:04Speaker 3: And sometimes that pressure or that distraction can hinder players
- 1:07:09Speaker 3: or a team. But I think overall we've handled this
- 1:07:13Speaker 3: moment pretty well, and I think it's a great opportunity
- 1:07:19Speaker 3: to go be us. And I'm sure Coach Scali is
- 1:07:22Speaker 3: saying the same thing. We don't need to be anybody
- 1:07:24Speaker 3: but ourselves, and our best is good enough. And so
- 1:07:27Speaker 3: let's go show the world what we're about.
- 1:07:31Speaker 2: Biggest game of the college football season so far took
- 1:07:34Speaker 2: place down in Provo last week and came down to
- 1:07:39Speaker 2: the last play of the game that ultimately should not
- 1:07:41Speaker 2: have been the last play of the game, according to
- 1:07:44Speaker 2: the clock, which is crazy that twice this year there's
- 1:07:48Speaker 2: been a dispute over how many seconds are left, whether
- 1:07:50Speaker 2: there's one or there's zero. Western Michigan, Michigan, and now
- 1:07:53Speaker 2: BYU Notre Dame. And I've asked everyone this question. The
- 1:07:58Speaker 2: correct football outcome for the end-of-game scenario in Notre Dame-BYU
- 1:08:04Speaker 2: is A, game ends as it was, and BYU gets
- 1:08:10Speaker 2: the win that they earned. B, pass interference flag should
- 1:08:14Speaker 2: have come in there. C, you don't have to throw
- 1:08:17Speaker 2: a flag, but Notre Dame gets one more snap.
- 1:08:20Speaker 1: Which one do you take?
- 1:08:22Speaker 3: I'm taking A because that's what happened, and I don't.
- 1:08:27Speaker 3: I don't really concern or, or talk, you know, like, okay,
- 1:08:30Speaker 3: go back in time. Do I think that, but now
- 1:08:34Speaker 3: if you're really like, you're really going to ask me,
- 1:08:36Speaker 3: I don't, you know, like there's one second on the clock. Right.
- 1:08:40Speaker 3: And did they go back and see when the ball
- 1:08:43Speaker 3: actually hit that it turned zero and on a different clock,
- 1:08:47Speaker 3: like nobody knows, it doesn't really matter. BYU outplayed Notre Dame.
- 1:08:52Speaker 3: It shouldn't have been close. They were the better team.
- 1:08:55Speaker 3: And so, yeah, like, I look at it in that retrospect. Yeah,
- 1:08:59Speaker 3: if I'm a Notre Dame fan, I'm like, damn, I'm
- 1:09:01Speaker 3: probably pissed off. But just unbiasedly and seeing it during
- 1:09:05Speaker 3: the game, seeing how they called that game in the
- 1:09:07Speaker 3: second half, I 100% agree why they didn't throw the flag.
- 1:09:11Speaker 3: And I didn't think it was really warranted anyways with
- 1:09:13Speaker 3: the ball placement and him widening so far to the sideline. Like,
- 1:09:17Speaker 3: I thought it was good on good. They called those
- 1:09:19Speaker 3: tiki-tac penalties throughout the first half. They tightened it up
- 1:09:22Speaker 3: in the second half. And what I was most impressed
- 1:09:28Speaker 3: with was how BYU handled, like they physically, I don't
- 1:09:36Speaker 3: want to say manually, but they matched up with Notre Dame,
- 1:09:39Speaker 3: which I was really surprised. I thought there would be
- 1:09:42Speaker 3: a disadvantage for BYU in the trenches, the physicality, the athleticism.
- 1:09:49Speaker 3: And I actually thought BYU was more than them, which
- 1:09:53Speaker 3: it showed. I mean, anyone that watched in person, you
- 1:09:56Speaker 3: could tell, like, they were the better team. They were
- 1:09:59Speaker 3: a better coach. They out-executed them. You take away the
- 1:10:01Speaker 3: muff punt and the fake punt inside their own 30, like,
- 1:10:06Speaker 3: that's a two. I bet they win by 20, the
- 1:10:09Speaker 3: way the game was. So, BYU is going to be
- 1:10:13Speaker 3: a tough team, man. And as of right now, I
- 1:10:16Speaker 3: think they're the better team. If we're looking at the
- 1:10:18Speaker 3: Big 12 after this Saturday, we're going to know where
- 1:10:21Speaker 3: we stand, and I'll have a better inclination of that
- 1:10:27Speaker 3: game in a few weeks that I'll be at, and
- 1:10:29Speaker 3: we'll be representing the U all day, all every day.
- 1:10:33Speaker 3: But it was an impressive win, man. It really was,
- 1:10:35Speaker 3: and it was great for the conference. It really was
- 1:10:38Speaker 3: to now have the opportunity to have that win on
- 1:10:40Speaker 3: BYU's resume and that 11-1 or potentially a 10-2, being
- 1:10:46Speaker 3: 12 champ, we can get multiple teams in the playoffs,
- 1:10:49Speaker 3: which is huge.
- 1:10:51Speaker 2: How come people on the internet are trying to place
- 1:10:55Speaker 2: you in a BYU celebration throwing up the Y with
- 1:11:00Speaker 2: any random bearded dude in the picture?
- 1:11:04Speaker 3: You know, the internet is crazy, and at least I
- 1:11:09Speaker 3: can defend myself. You know, like, I can get up
- 1:11:12Speaker 3: there and, and, and dispute anything that's not true. Like
- 1:11:15Speaker 3: I did once I saw it, I was like, guys,
- 1:11:18Speaker 3: that's a hundred percent, not me. And I would never, ever,
- 1:11:21Speaker 3: ever throw up the why in public. Like, okay, that's not,
- 1:11:25Speaker 3: that's not something I would ever do. I did it
- 1:11:28Speaker 3: when my, my daughter decided that she's going to BYU,
- 1:11:32Speaker 3: like to support her. But I'm telling you right now,
- 1:11:35Speaker 3: you'll never see me on a field for BYU unless
- 1:11:38Speaker 3: like my son was playing there. Right. Like that's, I
- 1:11:41Speaker 3: have respect for my Utes, but I also have respect
- 1:11:44Speaker 3: for BYU. So we watched the rush. I was trying
- 1:11:47Speaker 3: to find out where Brooklyn was in the chaos. And
- 1:11:50Speaker 3: then literally, like, five minutes into the rush in the field,
- 1:11:53Speaker 3: we left. Like, we were already out of the stadium. So,
- 1:11:58Speaker 3: you know, it's just cool. It's fans being crazy, which
- 1:12:01Speaker 3: we love. We're crazy in our own right. But anyone
- 1:12:05Speaker 3: that knows me knows I would never– ever be doing
- 1:12:09Speaker 3: something like that.
- 1:12:11Speaker 1: You got to watch out with the AI stuff these days, obviously.
- 1:12:14Speaker 3: Oh, geez. I know nothing's safe anymore.
- 1:12:17Speaker 2: What is the NFL group chat saying about the way
- 1:12:21Speaker 2: that the Philadelphia Eagles handled the blood clot situation with
- 1:12:25Speaker 2: Jalen hurts? Like I sometimes roll my eyes at all
- 1:12:28Speaker 2: the player safety stuff because, you know, it's like fans
- 1:12:32Speaker 2: don't actually care if a guy plays when he's concussed,
- 1:12:35Speaker 2: everyone tries to get on a high horse about it. But, but,
- 1:12:39Speaker 2: but this one, this one is like really scary. Blood
- 1:12:42Speaker 2: clots in your lungs. You're staying up for 36 hours.
- 1:12:46Speaker 2: And then the team's like, yeah, but you're cool. Go
- 1:12:47Speaker 2: play a football game. But what are the NFL players
- 1:12:50Speaker 2: saying about this?
- 1:12:52Speaker 3: Oh man, that, that whole story is pretty interesting and wild.
- 1:12:59Speaker 3: And I don't know, like I haven't read up fully
- 1:13:03Speaker 3: on all the stuff that's come on. Initially.
- 1:13:05Speaker 1: I read that.
- 1:13:07Speaker 8: When they.
- 1:13:10Speaker 3: First identified the blood clot in his calf, that they
- 1:13:12Speaker 3: said or told him that playing was actually better for it.
- 1:13:17Speaker 3: I don't know if that was any true or not,
- 1:13:20Speaker 3: but playing the game is something that, like, as a player,
- 1:13:25Speaker 3: you've got to remember, like, as a player, we don't
- 1:13:27Speaker 3: know anything from anything other than I play football, X's
- 1:13:31Speaker 3: and O's, like, this is what I do. So if
- 1:13:35Speaker 3: a doctor says, yeah, you're good to play, then okay,
- 1:13:38Speaker 3: I'm good to play. Like, let's rock. So, and then
- 1:13:41Speaker 3: if it's borderline, and, you know, we've all had in
- 1:13:44Speaker 3: history with doctors and teams, if it's borderline, then you're
- 1:13:48Speaker 3: going to be like, all right, I'm playing. Like, this
- 1:13:51Speaker 3: is just what I do. Now, as serious as this was,
- 1:13:54Speaker 3: I don't know if, I don't know how they allowed it,
- 1:13:59Speaker 3: but they did. And now, like, gosh, his career and
- 1:14:03Speaker 3: health is in jeopardy, so I just hope he's going
- 1:14:06Speaker 3: to be okay, for one. But two, everyone has to remember, like,
- 1:14:13Speaker 3: they don't really care about you. They care about winning
- 1:14:18Speaker 3: football games. And, you know, the game will go on.
- 1:14:22Speaker 3: They'll find a new player to replace Hurts and get
- 1:14:24Speaker 3: through the season. Like, the NFL will never stop, right? Like,
- 1:14:29Speaker 3: they'll just... The next guy's up. And then this will
- 1:14:32Speaker 3: get glossed over, and everyone will forget talking about it
- 1:14:35Speaker 3: because of all the gambling and the fantasy football and this, that,
- 1:14:39Speaker 3: and the other. And hopefully they get to the bottom
- 1:14:42Speaker 3: of it because if there was a mistake, that person
- 1:14:45Speaker 3: needs to be fired, and things need to be made
- 1:14:49Speaker 3: just for that mistake.
- 1:14:51Speaker 2: What is the craziest teammate versus teammate dispute that you
- 1:14:56Speaker 2: were ever close to or witnessed? I don't know if
- 1:14:59Speaker 2: you heard about what happened.
- 1:15:00Speaker 1: In Tennessee with a.
- 1:15:03Speaker 2: Boy going out to the car to get a gun.
- 1:15:07Speaker 2: But what's the craziest one that you were around?
- 1:15:09Speaker 3: I mean, what is going on with people's minds? We've
- 1:15:15Speaker 3: always handled disputes in the locker room. And I've seen fights.
- 1:15:19Speaker 3: I've seen fights. arguments, nothing more than hashing it out
- 1:15:25Speaker 3: in the locker room, especially as grown men. That gets handled.
- 1:15:29Speaker 3: This is old school. Now, new school, it's way different now.
- 1:15:33Speaker 3: I don't know. It's like social media fighting instead of
- 1:15:37Speaker 3: just hanging like men and talking face-to-face. So I've seen that.
- 1:15:41Speaker 3: I've seen over, you know, card playing, gambling amongst each other.
- 1:15:47Speaker 3: and money being owed, that could get pretty tenacious and
- 1:15:52Speaker 3: heightened between adults and males. But nothing to the extent
- 1:15:58Speaker 3: of going to get a gun and wanting to shoot
- 1:16:01Speaker 3: someone over whatever happened. Like, that is crazy, and he
- 1:16:07Speaker 3: needs help because that's not– I mean, I was telling
- 1:16:11Speaker 3: one of my assistants, like, that's premeditative, pre– Did I
- 1:16:16Speaker 3: say it right? Premeditated?
- 1:16:17Speaker 1: Premeditated, yeah, yeah.
- 1:16:19Speaker 3: Yeah, yeah, yeah. Like, hold on, man. You brought a gun,
- 1:16:23Speaker 3: which is against the rules. Like, you could get fired
- 1:16:26Speaker 3: and reprimanded for bringing a firearm on NFL, like, boundaries. Like,
- 1:16:35Speaker 3: as soon as you drive into the parking lot of
- 1:16:37Speaker 3: an NFL facility, we have certain rules. Like, you can't
- 1:16:39Speaker 3: do this, you can't do that. So bringing a firearm
- 1:16:42Speaker 3: in your car on the... NFL landscape or whatever, like
- 1:16:49Speaker 3: that's already, you're already breaking a rule. Now you're, you,
- 1:16:52Speaker 3: you're doing it to her somewhat like that's, that's bad ball. You,
- 1:16:56Speaker 3: you got, you got issues and I don't, I wouldn't be,
- 1:17:00Speaker 3: I don't want him as a teammate, let alone someone
- 1:17:03Speaker 3: around me.
- 1:17:04Speaker 1: Pretty, pretty crazy. Pretty nuts.
- 1:17:08Speaker 2: Robert Sala has, You know, he stood at the podium
- 1:17:12Speaker 2: and spoke to the guy's character and said, this is
- 1:17:15Speaker 2: a cry for help. This is not a criminal act.
- 1:17:17Speaker 2: And I was kind of surprised by his comment there.
- 1:17:20Speaker 3: Yeah. Hey, Coach Sala, like, if you really believed in
- 1:17:23Speaker 3: this kid and knew he had something wrong, then why
- 1:17:25Speaker 3: didn't you help him? Like, we're so after the fact.
- 1:17:30Speaker 3: I think he said, and that could be totally wrong,
- 1:17:32Speaker 3: but I think he said that he had been battling
- 1:17:36Speaker 3: some things internally. Well, if that is the case, like, what,
- 1:17:42Speaker 3: what are you doing? You're, you have people, many people
- 1:17:46Speaker 3: that are required, not required, but there to help guys
- 1:17:51Speaker 3: that are going through things like that. And you, you
- 1:17:53Speaker 3: basically were like, just gloss it over. So do you
- 1:17:56Speaker 3: really care about the kid? I don't know. Like, I
- 1:17:59Speaker 3: think you're trying to stay face and try to say
- 1:18:00Speaker 3: what the kid is, but this kid has some serious
- 1:18:03Speaker 3: issues with them. So you're like going to bat, like
- 1:18:05Speaker 3: you're willing to put your name on this kid who
- 1:18:07Speaker 3: just tried to kill a teammate.
- 1:18:09Speaker 8: I got it.
- 1:18:10Speaker 3: I don't know about that, babe. I think you're, you're,
- 1:18:13Speaker 3: you're stepping down the wrong street and putting your name
- 1:18:16Speaker 3: on somebody's character. Like you're, you're really going to have
- 1:18:19Speaker 3: to vouch for this kid's character after he tried to
- 1:18:21Speaker 3: go to his car to grab a gun and kill
- 1:18:23Speaker 3: a teammate. Hello. Does anyone else see a problem with this?
- 1:18:30Speaker 2: It wouldn't be me, but my goodness. You NFL guys
- 1:18:37Speaker 2: are in a different world, man. That's crazy stuff.
- 1:18:39Speaker 3: I guess so. I guess so. Like, we do live
- 1:18:42Speaker 3: in our own little world. Like, we don't know what's
- 1:18:44Speaker 3: going on in the real world. And that's true. Like,
- 1:18:47Speaker 3: we don't know what's going on in the.
- 1:18:50Speaker 3: You know, the world. Like, are we in, are we,
- 1:18:52Speaker 3: are we like in a war? Are we not? Who's
- 1:18:55Speaker 3: the president?
- 1:18:56Speaker 7: Like, we don't, we don't know.
- 1:18:57Speaker 3: Like we're, we're just, we're just going at our own pace. So,
- 1:19:01Speaker 3: but this man, you're tripping.
- 1:19:05Speaker 6: Yeah.
- 1:19:05Speaker 1: Gnarly stuff. All right, man.
- 1:19:08Speaker 2: Appreciate your time. We'll cut you loose. Good luck against
- 1:19:11Speaker 2: Mission Hills. Go kill the Grizzlies or whatever you're.
- 1:19:15Speaker 3: Supposed to say. We're going to get the Grizzlies. We
- 1:19:17Speaker 3: got them. All right. See you, brother.
- 1:19:20Speaker 1: See you, dude.
- 1:19:20Speaker 2: That's Eric Weddle, the Utah football legend, the NFL veteran.
- 1:19:26Speaker 2: The Daily Dump is coming next. We got some good
- 1:19:29Speaker 2: stories in here. You're going to want to stick around.
- 1:19:31Speaker 2: CSPN 700, 92.1 FM.
- 1:19:38Speaker 7: Feeling out of the loop?
- 1:19:40Speaker 4: Let's catch up on today's biggest headlines in the Daily
- 1:19:43Speaker 4: News Dump, where we flush out the biggest stories of
- 1:19:45Speaker 4: the day on the Sean O'Connell Show and Utah's number
- 1:19:49Speaker 4: one sports talk.
- 1:19:50Speaker 7: ESPN 792.1 FM.
- 1:19:51Speaker 4: Brought to you by Valley Plumbing, Heating, and Cooling.
- 1:19:56Speaker 7: Just look for the truck with the duck.
- 1:20:03Speaker 2: Valley plumbing.com. Tell them OC sent you make an appointment online.
- 1:20:06Speaker 2: You don't even have to pick up the phone and
- 1:20:08Speaker 2: call if you don't want to. I suppose we should
- 1:20:12Speaker 2: give some context to what I just asked Eric Weddle about.
- 1:20:16Speaker 2: Robert Sala went to the podium to talk about an
- 1:20:19Speaker 2: incident that happened after a Tennessee Titans practice where defensive
- 1:20:24Speaker 2: tackle Jordan Elliott and JC Latham, they're starting offensive tackle.
- 1:20:29Speaker 2: Apparently got into a bit of a dispute that Robert,
- 1:20:33Speaker 2: escalated to the point where Jordan Elliott took his pads off,
- 1:20:37Speaker 2: went out into the parking lot, grabbed a gun out
- 1:20:40Speaker 2: of his car, turned around to come back into the facility,
- 1:20:43Speaker 2: and we assume to confront J.C. Latham, and he was
- 1:20:50Speaker 2: intercepted by one of his fellow defensive tackles, Jonathan Franklin Myers,
- 1:20:55Speaker 2: and he was able to de-escalate the situation, talk the
- 1:20:59Speaker 2: whole thing down, and nobody got hurt. So good news there.
- 1:21:07Speaker 2: JC Latham has since been asked about it. By the way,
- 1:21:10Speaker 2: the Titans released Jordan Elliott.
- 1:21:12Speaker 1: They cut him.
- 1:21:12Speaker 2: Robert Sala then went to the podium and said, hey,
- 1:21:14Speaker 2: if anyone needs a good D tackle, you should sign
- 1:21:17Speaker 2: this kid. He's an awesome kid. He's an awesome football player.
- 1:21:20Speaker 2: And this was a cry for help, not a criminal act.
- 1:21:24Speaker 2: He then referenced like, hey, maybe he's in a bad
- 1:21:26Speaker 2: head space. And you just heard Eric Weddle talking about,
- 1:21:29Speaker 2: all right, well, if you think that, then get the
- 1:21:31Speaker 2: guy some help. Instead, they're cutting him and being like
- 1:21:35Speaker 2: somebody else, you should sign him. So, you know, unfortunate situation,
- 1:21:39Speaker 2: insane to think about whatever was said or done. They
- 1:21:43Speaker 2: pushed it to that level, especially when you can.
- 1:21:46Speaker 1: Right.
- 1:21:46Speaker 2: I mean, if James and I get into an argument
- 1:21:50Speaker 2: and then we get into a physical fight here in
- 1:21:53Speaker 2: the studio, like we're both going to get fired, which
- 1:21:56Speaker 2: of course I would win.
- 1:21:58Speaker 1: Well, I wasn't thinking about it in that context.
- 1:22:01Speaker 2: James wins the fight, but we both get fired because
- 1:22:04Speaker 2: like workplace violence in an office, it just doesn't make sense.
- 1:22:09Speaker 2: Workplace violence in the NFL. They could have fought as
- 1:22:13Speaker 2: long as they wanted to.
- 1:22:14Speaker 4: Yeah.
- 1:22:14Speaker 2: And maybe the team like slaps them both with a
- 1:22:17Speaker 2: cursory fine.
- 1:22:18Speaker 1: But they're not getting fired. They're just like, yeah, can't
- 1:22:21Speaker 1: get a, can't get weapons involved.
- 1:22:23Speaker 4: Yeah.
- 1:22:23Speaker 5: That's like, that's the line with like, sports in general,
- 1:22:28Speaker 5: but particularly a collision sport like NFL and hockey, probably.
- 1:22:33Speaker 1: Your job is to be a big, scary, violent man.
- 1:22:36Speaker 1: You can go be a big, scary, violent man. They're
- 1:22:39Speaker 1: going to be like, all right, guys, calm it down.
- 1:22:41Speaker 1: And if you don't guess what happens, they just wait
- 1:22:44Speaker 1: until you're done.
- 1:22:45Speaker 6: Yeah.
- 1:22:46Speaker 1: And then maybe there's a fine. If it's super serious,
- 1:22:49Speaker 1: probably slap somebody with a $ 5, 000 fine.
- 1:22:52Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 1:22:53Speaker 1: And they're just like, okay, let it be done.
- 1:22:55Speaker 2: And look, I know, I know for a fact that
- 1:22:58Speaker 2: this has happened at BYU, that this has happened at
- 1:23:01Speaker 2: Utah where players get into fist fights, like real ones,
- 1:23:05Speaker 2: not even just on the field, slapping each other in
- 1:23:08Speaker 2: the helmet.
- 1:23:08Speaker 1: I'm talking about locker room incidents.
- 1:23:11Speaker 6: And guess what?
- 1:23:13Speaker 1: Everybody goes home and it's fine.
- 1:23:15Speaker 2: Sometimes they end up being closer friends and teammates because
- 1:23:18Speaker 2: of it. This case is nuts. So Tennessee Titans have
- 1:23:24Speaker 2: cut Jordan Elliott. This is my favorite thing about it.
- 1:23:28Speaker 1: J.C.
- 1:23:28Speaker 2: Latham, the tackle, the offensive tackle, who was on potentially
- 1:23:33Speaker 2: the receiving end of a gunshot, or at least the
- 1:23:36Speaker 2: threat of a gunshot, he.
- 1:23:40Speaker 2: He answered, he's just like, we've never had any bad
- 1:23:42Speaker 2: blood between us. In fact, their relationship was described as
- 1:23:45Speaker 2: fairly friendly. And he said, no hard feelings. Only in
- 1:23:52Speaker 2: sports and probably only in football.
- 1:23:55Speaker 7: Great.
- 1:23:56Speaker 3: Great.
- 1:23:57Speaker 2: So the guy that you got in a fight with
- 1:23:59Speaker 2: at practice, and then he went to the car and
- 1:24:01Speaker 2: brought back his gun and somebody else intervened on your behalf.
- 1:24:05Speaker 2: You have no negative feelings towards this man? He's just like, yeah,
- 1:24:07Speaker 2: no hard feelings.
- 1:24:09Speaker 1: That is terrible. That's crazy.
- 1:24:11Speaker 5: That's almost as crazy as going and grabbing a gun
- 1:24:14Speaker 5: by Jordan Elliott to say, yeah, I actually have no
- 1:24:17Speaker 5: hard feelings.
- 1:24:18Speaker 1: It's probably the smart thing to say. Actually, absolutely.
- 1:24:21Speaker 5: It's publicly, maybe that's what he's, he's like, I'm prepared
- 1:24:24Speaker 5: to say this publicly, privately.
- 1:24:26Speaker 2: I hope I never see him again. Like privately. I
- 1:24:29Speaker 2: went and bought my own gun just in case.
- 1:24:31Speaker 1: Got upped my own personal security. That's crazy. That is nuts.
- 1:24:36Speaker 2: Don't get in a fight with Jordan Elliott if you
- 1:24:39Speaker 2: ever see him.
- 1:24:39Speaker 5: I'll say this because going back to the interview with
- 1:24:42Speaker 5: Eric Weddle, which you just heard, it'll be posted up
- 1:24:44Speaker 5: on the website soon, ESPN700Sports. com and Sean O'Connell Show Podcast.
- 1:24:51Speaker 5: He kind of said back in my day, the old
- 1:24:55Speaker 5: school way was to handle it in person and in
- 1:24:59Speaker 5: the locker room, so to speak. I will say that
- 1:25:04Speaker 5: he's talking about his NFL experience, his college experience. In
- 1:25:09Speaker 5: the same era, we had Gilbert Arenas pull guns in
- 1:25:12Speaker 5: a locker room over cards in the NBA.
- 1:25:15Speaker 1: So this is not necessarily... It's not without precedent.
- 1:25:18Speaker 5: And this is not necessarily a new age thing to
- 1:25:22Speaker 5: escalate it to something potentially like this. And it's not
- 1:25:26Speaker 5: the first time it's happened with pro players. athletes, but it's, uh,
- 1:25:32Speaker 5: it's certainly rare and it's always crazy when we.
- 1:25:34Speaker 1: Hear about it.
- 1:25:34Speaker 2: I also think that it, that in the NBA, the
- 1:25:38Speaker 2: sort of like, well, just fight it is probably handled
- 1:25:41Speaker 2: differently than in the NFL because it's not, I mean,
- 1:25:44Speaker 2: the NBA is a very physical game, but it's not
- 1:25:46Speaker 2: physical in the same way.
- 1:25:47Speaker 1: It's not as direct.
- 1:25:48Speaker 5: It's not as obviously as someone who grew up playing
- 1:25:51Speaker 5: basketball and of course didn't play at a high level,
- 1:25:53Speaker 5: but someone who grew up playing basketball and did not
- 1:25:55Speaker 5: play football, it's kind of crazy to, get into a
- 1:25:59Speaker 5: fist fight or something as basketball players.
- 1:26:02Speaker 1: For sure. It's kind of crazy. It's not crazy for
- 1:26:04Speaker 1: football players. Not crazy in football.
- 1:26:06Speaker 2: Kind of crazy for basketball. And in basketball, I think
- 1:26:08Speaker 2: they handle it differently. So it's probably more likely that
- 1:26:11Speaker 2: someone's going to like have the theater kid freak out
- 1:26:14Speaker 2: and grab a gun in basketball because in football you
- 1:26:17Speaker 2: can just like, all right, let's, let's punch.
- 1:26:19Speaker 1: Each other or whatever. Let's have a go at this.
- 1:26:22Speaker 2: You know, what's funny is in like the combat sports world,
- 1:26:24Speaker 2: if you do grab a gun, you're your status in
- 1:26:28Speaker 2: that world suddenly is drastically diminished.
- 1:26:31Speaker 1: And we're just like, what? You sissy.
- 1:26:33Speaker 5: You don't even believe you could win the fight. So
- 1:26:35Speaker 5: you're like, my body's a weapon. I don't need a weapon.
- 1:26:39Speaker 2: If you, if you're, if this is a story from like,
- 1:26:42Speaker 2: the UFC or the PFL and somebody goes to the
- 1:26:45Speaker 2: locker room and grabs a gun, everyone in the whole
- 1:26:47Speaker 2: sport is just like, that guy's a sissy.
- 1:26:49Speaker 1: You're just laughing at him.
- 1:26:50Speaker 2: And then that's how, that's how it deescalates the situation.
- 1:26:54Speaker 1: You just laugh in his face.
- 1:26:55Speaker 2: He knew he couldn't win a real fight. So he
- 1:26:58Speaker 2: went to get a gun and everyone's just like, you
- 1:26:59Speaker 2: actually stink, dude.
- 1:27:00Speaker 1: That actually tracks.
- 1:27:03Speaker 5: That's exactly what I would think, how I would think
- 1:27:05Speaker 5: that situation would play out.
- 1:27:07Speaker 2: All right. Brady could Chuck made his return to the
- 1:27:12Speaker 2: Ottawa senators. The Florida Panthers ended up losing six to
- 1:27:16Speaker 2: one in this game.
- 1:27:17Speaker 6: Wow.
- 1:27:17Speaker 2: Brady could Chuck is the only one who scored and
- 1:27:20Speaker 2: in hockey you just, okay. So like when the Utah,
- 1:27:24Speaker 2: when the Utah jazz, when a player moves on from
- 1:27:28Speaker 2: the Utah jazz or when a guy leaves the Utah
- 1:27:30Speaker 2: jazz for the most part, when he comes back, there's
- 1:27:35Speaker 2: like a.
- 1:27:35Speaker 1: An affection. There's like a, .
- 1:27:45Speaker 2: .
- 1:28:02Speaker 9: .
- 1:28:06Speaker 1: .
- 1:28:08Speaker 10: .
- 1:28:10Speaker 1: F you Brady. They were doing all of it.
- 1:28:12Speaker 7: Scoreboard.
- 1:28:14Speaker 2: Yeah, they did it all for the whole game. So
- 1:28:17Speaker 2: I just want to applaud the pettiness of Ottawa senators.
- 1:28:19Speaker 1: Fans.
- 1:28:28Speaker 5: .
- 1:28:35Speaker 2: .
- 1:28:38Speaker 1: So I might be wrong.
- 1:28:32Speaker 1: All right.
- 1:28:32Speaker 2: Let's fit in a PGA tour leaderboard update from the
- 1:28:35Speaker 2: Bermuda championship as well. You went to golf by worldwide golf.
- 1:28:39Speaker 2: They've got custom fitting happening right now. You can get
- 1:28:42Speaker 2: a $ 15 coupon just by signing up for the email
- 1:28:45Speaker 2: and text alerts that they send out. So $ 15 in
- 1:28:48Speaker 2: your pocket. The next time you go to, you went
- 1:28:50Speaker 2: to golf, St. George, Sandy Riverdale, Orem, Salt Lake city.
- 1:28:54Speaker 2: They've got multiple locations here in the state of Utah.
- 1:28:58Speaker 2: You went to golf by Worldwide Golf. What does the
- 1:29:01Speaker 2: leaderboard look like at this moment? I lost the tournament
- 1:29:05Speaker 2: because it's in Bermuda. I see what you did there.
- 1:29:08Speaker 5: Tony Finau maybe got lost on his way there. No,
- 1:29:11Speaker 5: that's not funny. That's not funny. Tony's not in the field.
- 1:29:16Speaker 5: He's not lost somewhere over the Atlantic Ocean or in
- 1:29:19Speaker 5: the Caribbean either. Don't worry about that. Just making a
- 1:29:21Speaker 5: Bermuda Triangle joke there. Ben Coles and Ben Silverman, Danny Walker.
- 1:29:26Speaker 5: Those are your leaders after they're all finished with their
- 1:29:29Speaker 5: first round. At eight under, tied for first there, Mackenzie Hughes,
- 1:29:33Speaker 5: Jonathan Bird, and Seamus Power.
- 1:29:37Speaker 1: There's a bigger name for you.
- 1:29:39Speaker 5: Tied for fourth, one shot off the lead at seven under,
- 1:29:41Speaker 5: tied for eighth, and rounding out the top ten, there's
- 1:29:43Speaker 5: like ten guys tied for eighth. You've got Bryce Garrett,
- 1:29:48Speaker 5: Eric Cole, Austin Smotherman. I like to call him the Smotherman.
- 1:29:54Speaker 5: Zach Blair, there's a U-Pot for a Utah player on tour.
- 1:29:59Speaker 5: They're all at six under with a couple other guys
- 1:30:01Speaker 5: there as well. Tied for eighth, just two shots off
- 1:30:05Speaker 5: the lead. So no Tony Finau, and not because of
- 1:30:08Speaker 5: mysterious disappearance. He's just not playing. Zach Blair is your
- 1:30:14Speaker 5: Utah representative, representing well. Two shots off the lead. That's
- 1:30:17Speaker 5: your PGA Tour leaderboard update brought to you by Uintah Golf.
- 1:30:21Speaker 1: All right, we'll take a quick one here.
- 1:30:22Speaker 2: Injury update is out for Utah versus Houston, also for
- 1:30:26Speaker 2: BYU versus UCF. We'll give you a status update on
- 1:30:30Speaker 2: Kelvin Obot, according to the official Utah injury report. That's
- 1:30:34Speaker 2: next on ESPN 700 and 92.1 FM. I can feel
- 1:30:36Speaker 2: it coming in the.
- 1:30:38Speaker 6: Air tonight.

- 1:31:01Speaker 2: In the one o'clock hour dishing with dev devin dampier
- 1:31:05Speaker 2: qb1 from the university of utah in anticipation of Houston
- 1:31:10Speaker 2: coming into town and also reacting to what happened with
- 1:31:12Speaker 2: Colorado that ultimately was a Utah win. And then at 1.30,
- 1:31:16Speaker 2: Shreyas Lada from the Salt Lake Tribune, the new Utah
- 1:31:21Speaker 2: Jazz insider from the Trib, will join us on the show.
- 1:31:24Speaker 1: Looking forward to that.
- 1:31:26Speaker 2: We'll give away Nickelback tickets in Topical Trivia at about 1.45.
- 1:31:32Speaker 2: Right now, time for an advocate's injury update. If you've
- 1:31:35Speaker 2: been injured in an accident, auto accident, scooter accident, biking accident,
- 1:31:39Speaker 2: walking accident, sledding accident.
- 1:31:42Speaker 1: Maybe you have a case.
- 1:31:43Speaker 2: Call the advocates at 801-355-5550. You deserve an advocate. The
- 1:31:49Speaker 2: Utah injury report against Houston. Linebacker Preston Pitts is out.
- 1:31:56Speaker 2: You have not spoken about or seen much of him.
- 1:32:00Speaker 2: Kelvin Obott. We saw the ankle injury last week. He
- 1:32:04Speaker 2: is out for this game against Houston. That is a loss.
- 1:32:07Speaker 2: He's a true freshman. He's really stepped up, and he's
- 1:32:10Speaker 2: been the starting left tackle, excuse me, the starting left
- 1:32:14Speaker 2: guard for several weeks now for this University of Utah
- 1:32:17Speaker 2: football team.
- 1:32:19Speaker 1: He's played very well. He is.
- 1:32:23Speaker 1: An incredible athlete.
- 1:32:25Speaker 2: I mean, this guy is just scratching the surface now
- 1:32:28Speaker 2: of what he's going to end up being for this
- 1:32:30Speaker 2: Utah football team. I think he probably bumps out to
- 1:32:34Speaker 2: starting left tackle in the 2027 season when zero way
- 1:32:39Speaker 2: Williams has the option to move on and he's on
- 1:32:42Speaker 2: draft boards now. So That's probably going to be the
- 1:32:45Speaker 2: most likely outcome there. But Kelvin Obot being out against
- 1:32:48Speaker 2: Houston is a loss. It's not a wildly catastrophic loss
- 1:32:53Speaker 2: because this offensive line through the first three weeks, especially
- 1:32:56Speaker 2: played so many different combinations.
- 1:33:00Speaker 1: And we talked about this a little bit yesterday.
- 1:33:02Speaker 2: Salato Moyai has been, he's played a lot of football
- 1:33:05Speaker 2: for the university of Utah, not only this year already,
- 1:33:09Speaker 2: but last year he was the big body that they
- 1:33:12Speaker 2: brought in to be the extra offensive lineman in pretty
- 1:33:14Speaker 2: much every formation. So he's played all over the offensive line.
- 1:33:18Speaker 2: He's played a lot of football. I assume he's going
- 1:33:21Speaker 2: to get to start. Keith Olson is also back off
- 1:33:23Speaker 2: the injury. So that changes some things. Ike Garcia is back.
- 1:33:28Speaker 2: He's a right tackle, but maybe you could use Jefferson
- 1:33:31Speaker 2: at a guard position or vice versa if you need to.
- 1:33:33Speaker 1: So yes, it's a loss.
- 1:33:36Speaker 2: Is it, wildly catastrophic that Kelvin Obata is going to
- 1:33:40Speaker 2: be out. No, especially because it is not being talked
- 1:33:43Speaker 2: about as a season ending injury, which is the most
- 1:33:45Speaker 2: important thing.
- 1:33:46Speaker 8: Yeah.
- 1:33:47Speaker 5: It's interesting that it was kind of, it's a little
- 1:33:52Speaker 5: bit cloak and dagger, like what we're used to with
- 1:33:56Speaker 5: what university Utah head coaches in particular say about injuries
- 1:34:01Speaker 5: that are not season ending. Well, we've grown accustomed to
- 1:34:04Speaker 5: Morgan has two, just it warrants saying he has been
- 1:34:08Speaker 5: willing to say, hey, yeah, he's hurt without it being
- 1:34:12Speaker 5: season ending, but still not given a ton of information.
- 1:34:15Speaker 5: It's interesting that Pete Thamel was able to get the
- 1:34:19Speaker 5: report that, hey, he's out before the first injury report came,
- 1:34:22Speaker 5: because that's just so foreign for us who cover University
- 1:34:26Speaker 5: of Utah. But it is worth noting that it is
- 1:34:28Speaker 5: not categorize this season ending.
- 1:34:30Speaker 2: I wonder by the way, Pete Thamel is, has access
- 1:34:34Speaker 2: to the team right now because of his involvement with
- 1:34:36Speaker 2: game day.
- 1:34:37Speaker 1: Oh yeah, of course. So yeah, he's, he's probably probably
- 1:34:40Speaker 1: boots on the ground.
- 1:34:42Speaker 6: Exactly.
- 1:34:43Speaker 5: Real quick, an offensive line question for you as someone
- 1:34:46Speaker 5: who co-hosted with an NFL offensive lineman for a long time,
- 1:34:49Speaker 5: Jeff Schwartz.
- 1:34:50Speaker 2: Also, two-time first-team all-region offensive lineman myself.
- 1:34:54Speaker 1: Oh, there you go. I forgot. My bad. Come on.
- 1:34:58Speaker 1: Go beat Diggers.
- 1:34:58Speaker 5: Ike Garcia, off of injury, he's listed and has practiced
- 1:35:04Speaker 5: and played the opposite side as a tackle. How crazy
- 1:35:08Speaker 5: is it mid-season if they felt like, hey, we need
- 1:35:10Speaker 5: an extra body at left tackle to switch like that?
- 1:35:13Speaker 3: Well....
- 1:35:15Speaker 1: He would be, he'd be playing guard guard, right? Sorry. Guard.
- 1:35:20Speaker 2: It's a big switch, especially for a guy that hasn't
- 1:35:23Speaker 2: played a ton. But the thing with this Utah offensive
- 1:35:27Speaker 2: line and Jim Harding did this and Jordan gross is
- 1:35:30Speaker 2: doing it right now because they were trying to figure
- 1:35:33Speaker 2: out all of these different potential combinations. A healthy version
- 1:35:38Speaker 2: of Ike Garcia will have taken snaps at guard, probably
- 1:35:42Speaker 2: at right guard rather than left guard.
- 1:35:43Speaker 5: Yeah, because he's been on the right side of the line.
- 1:35:45Speaker 5: But he will have taken snaps.
- 1:35:48Speaker 2: I honestly don't know how many practices he was fully
- 1:35:51Speaker 2: healthy for. If he has practiced it, not the end
- 1:35:55Speaker 2: of the world to have him go play it. If
- 1:35:56Speaker 2: he has not practiced it, you're not getting him up
- 1:35:58Speaker 2: to speed in a week. You just can't like.
- 1:36:01Speaker 1: He knows the playbook.
- 1:36:02Speaker 2: All these guys know all the playbook and they probably
- 1:36:04Speaker 2: know every position on the playbook with the exception of,
- 1:36:08Speaker 2: of center. I would imagine they have at least some
- 1:36:11Speaker 2: awareness of the assignment of all five guys on the line.
- 1:36:15Speaker 2: That's just how offensive line works. But I don't know
- 1:36:19Speaker 2: that that would be too big of a stretch for me.
- 1:36:21Speaker 6: Yeah.
- 1:36:21Speaker 2: Now Jefferson is, As a more experienced player, maybe you
- 1:36:26Speaker 2: move him over to left guard and you let Ike
- 1:36:30Speaker 2: play the position that he's been playing at right tackle.
- 1:36:32Speaker 6: Yeah.
- 1:36:33Speaker 5: If you need an extra body, I only ask that
- 1:36:36Speaker 5: just out of curiosity because you hear about, we all
- 1:36:41Speaker 5: think that, everything's.
- 1:36:42Speaker 1: Just homogenous along the offensive line, right? It's all the same.
- 1:36:45Speaker 5: They're all offensive linemen, but there, there are obviously particular
- 1:36:49Speaker 5: nuances to things, especially if you're playing on the opposite
- 1:36:51Speaker 5: side of where there might be a void.
- 1:36:54Speaker 1: And also it's worth noting.
- 1:36:56Speaker 5: He, if I Garcia is going to get reps there,
- 1:36:58Speaker 5: he's not going to be the starter. We already mentioned, uh, there,
- 1:37:02Speaker 5: they already have a solution. It's starter there without Obon.
- 1:37:04Speaker 6: Yeah.
- 1:37:05Speaker 1: So tell a soul, tell him all.
- 1:37:06Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 1:37:07Speaker 1: I was going to get the start. I would imagine.
- 1:37:08Speaker 2: Um, But there is some interchangeability, some versatility. When people
- 1:37:13Speaker 2: ask the question about how big of a deal is
- 1:37:15Speaker 2: it to go right to left, left to right, it
- 1:37:18Speaker 2: kind of depends on the person. It kind of depends
- 1:37:20Speaker 2: on the player. There's basketball guys who can shoot with
- 1:37:23Speaker 2: both hands. They can finish left and finish right. Some
- 1:37:26Speaker 2: people are not Zoolander ambi-turners. Sometimes you just can't. There
- 1:37:32Speaker 2: are people like professional snowboarders and skateboarders who are just
- 1:37:36Speaker 2: not good when they're goofy-footed.
- 1:37:39Speaker 4: Yeah.
- 1:37:39Speaker 2: Or when they're standing regular, that's, that's probably the closest
- 1:37:42Speaker 2: analogy here. Like if you are about footwork, your stance
- 1:37:46Speaker 2: is so different, right?
- 1:37:48Speaker 1: Like inverted zero way.
- 1:37:50Speaker 2: Williams starts every play with his right foot in front
- 1:37:54Speaker 2: of his left foot.
- 1:37:55Speaker 5: Right.
- 1:37:56Speaker 2: I mean, he's largely square, but his right foot is
- 1:37:59Speaker 2: slightly in front of his left foot.
- 1:38:00Speaker 1: Right.
- 1:38:01Speaker 2: Cedric Jefferson does it the opposite way. I Garcia does
- 1:38:04Speaker 2: it the opposite way, right? Your kick slide is backwards.
- 1:38:08Speaker 2: I mean, Some fighters can go Southpaw or Orthodox. I
- 1:38:12Speaker 2: was never really that good out of a Southpaw stance.
- 1:38:15Speaker 2: So if you ever watched any of my fight career
- 1:38:17Speaker 2: and shout out to whoever was texting today, that's our guy, Darius.
- 1:38:21Speaker 1: Shout out to you.
- 1:38:22Speaker 2: Shout out Darius because he watched my championship fight from
- 1:38:25Speaker 2: eight years ago.
- 1:38:27Speaker 1: They said it was the first time. Thanks for taking
- 1:38:29Speaker 1: me back down memory lane. I love that. But, like,
- 1:38:31Speaker 1: you watch that fight.
- 1:38:32Speaker 2: I think I probably throw two or three strikes out
- 1:38:34Speaker 2: of a southpaw stance just because the footwork gets weird
- 1:38:37Speaker 2: when you're moving back and forward.
- 1:38:38Speaker 1: But, like, some people can do it interchangeably. They're equally good.
- 1:38:43Speaker 1: Some people are not.
- 1:38:43Speaker 2: I don't know where Ike Garcia falls on that spectrum
- 1:38:46Speaker 2: or anyone else in this offensive line falls on that spectrum.
- 1:38:49Speaker 3: But.
- 1:38:49Speaker 1: It is different.
- 1:38:51Speaker 2: It's harder to do it the opposite way. Tonight, all
- 1:38:56Speaker 2: of you out there, brush your teeth with the opposite hand.
- 1:39:01Speaker 2: You can do it. Your teeth are still going to
- 1:39:03Speaker 2: get clean, but it's weird. It's not going to be
- 1:39:07Speaker 2: as vigorous. I'm pantomiming with my left hand as I'm
- 1:39:10Speaker 2: a righty.
- 1:39:11Speaker 1: I'm a lefty, right?
- 1:39:12Speaker 2: If when I try to brush my teeth with my
- 1:39:14Speaker 2: right arm, it's just less efficient. Like, so at lunch today,
- 1:39:19Speaker 2: you probably already had it at dinner this evening. Hold
- 1:39:23Speaker 2: your fork in the opposite hand. And that's what you're
- 1:39:26Speaker 2: asking players to do. Maybe wear a bib because it
- 1:39:29Speaker 2: might get messy.
- 1:39:31Speaker 3: Maybe.
- 1:39:33Speaker 1: All right.
- 1:39:34Speaker 2: So that's your injury report for the university of Utah, Houston.
- 1:39:38Speaker 2: Their defensive lineman, one of their best defensive lineman, Damarian Thomas,
- 1:39:41Speaker 2: is out.
- 1:39:42Speaker 1: Four others are listed as probable.
- 1:39:45Speaker 6: L.J.
- 1:39:45Speaker 1: Martin's still out for BYU.
- 1:39:47Speaker 2: So is Tommy Prasses, who gives them good depth in
- 1:39:51Speaker 2: the defensive backfield. Offensive lineman, starting offensive lineman, Kyle Svarchuk,
- 1:39:57Speaker 2: is questionable for the Cougs, but... If you could beat
- 1:40:00Speaker 2: Notre Dame without LJ Martin, you're probably fine without everybody else,
- 1:40:05Speaker 2: especially against UCF.
- 1:40:06Speaker 5: A ton more players out and are on the injury
- 1:40:09Speaker 5: report for UCF than are on the injury report for BYU.
- 1:40:14Speaker 5: But like you said, it's probably not going to matter.
- 1:40:17Speaker 5: You got to feel, you got to be feeling really
- 1:40:19Speaker 5: bulletproof if you're Kalani Sataki and company right now.
- 1:40:24Speaker 3: All right.
- 1:40:25Speaker 2: We'll take our last break of hour number two. Dishing
- 1:40:28Speaker 2: with Dev is next. Don't go anywhere. QB number one
- 1:40:32Speaker 2: on the Sean O'Connell Show, ESPN 700 and 92 on FM.
- 1:40:37Speaker 7: It's time to.
- 1:40:37Speaker 4: Talk to Utah quarterback Devin Dampier. This is Dishing with
- 1:40:41Speaker 4: Devin on the Sean O'Connell Show. Brought to you by
- 1:40:44Speaker 4: Colligan Water, Salt Lake City, America First Credit Union, and
- 1:40:48Speaker 4: Valley Plumbing, Heating and Cooling. Now here's OC with Ute
- 1:40:52Speaker 4: Star signal caller Devin Dampier on your home of the
- 1:40:55Speaker 4: Utes and your home for football.
- 1:40:57Speaker 7: ESPN 792.1 FM.
- 1:41:01Speaker 2: We're right in the middle of an excellent Utah football season.
- 1:41:05Speaker 2: 6-0 ranked top 10 in the country. Game day performance
- 1:41:09Speaker 2: coming up. Houston coming into town. Blackout game, night game
- 1:41:13Speaker 2: at Rice Echo Stadium. And QB1 is right here in
- 1:41:16Speaker 2: studio with us. Devin Dampier for Dishing with Dev. Brought
- 1:41:20Speaker 2: to you by Culligan Water of Salt Lake City, America
- 1:41:22Speaker 2: First Credit Union, and Valley Plumbing, Heating, and Cooling.
- 1:41:26Speaker 1: Dev, good to have you on a Wednesday.
- 1:41:27Speaker 7: How are you, sir?
- 1:41:28Speaker 6: Good, good. We're back.
- 1:41:30Speaker 1: You're back.
- 1:41:31Speaker 2: Let's talk a little Colorado football.
- 1:41:33Speaker 1: Shall we?
- 1:41:34Speaker 6: Yeah.
- 1:41:36Speaker 7: It was a win.
- 1:41:38Speaker 2: I want to stay focused on that. Did you guys
- 1:41:41Speaker 2: get to enjoy the win? Because it was closer than
- 1:41:44Speaker 2: a lot of people thought. It was a lot more
- 1:41:46Speaker 2: hard fought. It wasn't the cleanest game you all have
- 1:41:48Speaker 2: played this year. Were you still able to enjoy that
- 1:41:51Speaker 2: as a victory and an improvement to 6-0?
- 1:41:54Speaker 6: Yeah, there's definitely a little bit of both.
- 1:41:57Speaker 11: I've talked about our standard, how we want to play,
- 1:42:00Speaker 11: how we expect to play. I don't think we met
- 1:42:02Speaker 11: that standard, but anytime you can walk out with a
- 1:42:06Speaker 11: win any week, that's adding another win without a loss
- 1:42:10Speaker 11: on your record. At the end of the day, we
- 1:42:13Speaker 11: were able to find a way to end up winning
- 1:42:15Speaker 11: that game, so we're proud that happened, but it just
- 1:42:18Speaker 11: wasn't our standard that we'd.
- 1:42:20Speaker 6: Want to play at every game.
- 1:42:22Speaker 2: Now that you've looked back on it, Is there something
- 1:42:25Speaker 2: that explains for you, at least, why the standard wasn't met? Like,
- 1:42:28Speaker 2: was it human nature? Didn't respect Colorado enough? I don't
- 1:42:32Speaker 2: want to put words in your mouth. Is there something
- 1:42:35Speaker 2: that when you look back now and you have the
- 1:42:37Speaker 2: benefit of hindsight, you say, that's why we performed.
- 1:42:39Speaker 6: The way we did? Yeah.
- 1:42:42Speaker 11: Man, I would say there's a lot of plays out
- 1:42:44Speaker 11: there where, you know, one guy was able to cause destruction,
- 1:42:50Speaker 11: I guess I could say, and that's including me as well.
- 1:42:53Speaker 6: But just.
- 1:42:54Speaker 11: Around our team, it was like 10 of us were playing,
- 1:42:57Speaker 11: and one person would lack off a little bit, and
- 1:43:00Speaker 11: that would be the difference between a 20-yard gain and
- 1:43:04Speaker 11: what should have been a touchdown. Just small things like
- 1:43:06Speaker 11: that definitely showed up. And just our red zone efficiency,
- 1:43:11Speaker 11: I feel like we're one of those teams where we
- 1:43:12Speaker 11: get in the red zone, we score almost every time.
- 1:43:14Speaker 11: So the fact that we weren't doing that, it could
- 1:43:17Speaker 11: have been 21-0 if we scored all our red zone
- 1:43:20Speaker 11: drives first quarter, but we ended up making it 13-0.
- 1:43:23Speaker 11: 13 to zero where, you know, it's still a game.
- 1:43:26Speaker 11: They still feel like they're in it.
- 1:43:28Speaker 2: And that's really the worst thing you could do against
- 1:43:30Speaker 2: a team that you're better than.
- 1:43:32Speaker 4: Right.
- 1:43:33Speaker 2: You let them feel like they can hang around. You
- 1:43:34Speaker 2: let them feel like they're going to halftime like, hey,
- 1:43:37Speaker 2: this is still a game. If if you score on
- 1:43:39Speaker 2: all those drives, then Colorado's getting down on themselves. The
- 1:43:44Speaker 2: human nature takes over and it's like, oh, man, this
- 1:43:46Speaker 2: is an uphill climb. And ultimately, they stayed in it,
- 1:43:49Speaker 2: and it was a close game. But 27-24 victory, and
- 1:43:54Speaker 2: you improve to 6-0. 24 of 41, 278 yards, three touchdowns,
- 1:44:01Speaker 2: two interceptions for you. Although one of those interceptions that
- 1:44:06Speaker 2: I'll let you break it down for me, right?
- 1:44:08Speaker 1: The Utah pass. It's a pitch forward.
- 1:44:11Speaker 2: And it's a bobbled ball that still goes down as
- 1:44:14Speaker 2: an interception on you, on you.
- 1:44:17Speaker 1: That kind of sucks.
- 1:44:18Speaker 6: Yeah.
- 1:44:19Speaker 11: My, like I, I've been, I explained to my coach
- 1:44:23Speaker 11: why I was so disappointed just because that Mike, I
- 1:44:25Speaker 11: threw five picks last year. My goal this year was
- 1:44:28Speaker 11: to end up being at four. So the fact I'm
- 1:44:31Speaker 11: already at four, I'm just a little irritated. Like how
- 1:44:34Speaker 11: did I put myself in this position? So, um, I mean,
- 1:44:37Speaker 11: it comes with the game though. Uh, Yeah, sometimes plays
- 1:44:43Speaker 11: happen like that.
- 1:44:45Speaker 2: Yeah, it's one of those plays where, and we explained
- 1:44:48Speaker 2: this on Monday, right? That is an efficient play because
- 1:44:51Speaker 2: the worst-case scenario is supposed to be that if a
- 1:44:53Speaker 2: pitch is dropped, it's a forward pass, there's no fumble there,
- 1:44:56Speaker 2: and instead falls.
- 1:44:57Speaker 1: Into the lap of a D lineman of all people.
- 1:44:59Speaker 11: I don't know how it got ricocheted back to him,
- 1:45:02Speaker 11: but it did.
- 1:45:03Speaker 2: But you survived it. And look, you made a couple
- 1:45:07Speaker 2: of really important throws there. In this game, two of
- 1:45:10Speaker 2: Creed Whittemore's three catches in the game, he was three
- 1:45:13Speaker 2: catches for 88 yards, were kind of like game savers.
- 1:45:18Speaker 1: Tell me what you saw in those plays.
- 1:45:19Speaker 11: Yeah, man, the first one, you know, we were able
- 1:45:24Speaker 11: to just come out of halftime and realize that call
- 1:45:28Speaker 11: was something we wanted to get back to multiple times,
- 1:45:31Speaker 11: and it was just Creed on the outside, and he was,
- 1:45:34Speaker 11: Creed's slick fast. Like, he can move when he needs to, so.
- 1:45:39Speaker 11: He just kind of ran by him. I had a
- 1:45:40Speaker 11: little bit of pressure and just kind of gave him
- 1:45:42Speaker 11: a chance. And, you know, it landed there perfectly. And
- 1:45:46Speaker 11: the second one, I took a sack. We were backed
- 1:45:49Speaker 11: up a little bit. And Carlotta wanted to give us pressure,
- 1:45:52Speaker 11: try to get us in a third and long situation. But, again,
- 1:45:55Speaker 11: Creed's out there. Gave him a chance again. And he
- 1:45:59Speaker 11: dropped one of those passes earlier this season. So the
- 1:46:02Speaker 11: fact that he got to re-get it this game and
- 1:46:05Speaker 11: he took full advantage of it. So I'm proud of him.
- 1:46:07Speaker 1: Yeah, I had it.
- 1:46:09Speaker 2: Great game, even though it was only three catches, the
- 1:46:11Speaker 2: timing of those catches felt like it really bailed some
- 1:46:14Speaker 2: things out and you two connecting on those. I mean,
- 1:46:17Speaker 2: everyone knows that when, when the chips are down seven's
- 1:46:21Speaker 2: an option, right? Braden Pagan there, I'm sure the defense
- 1:46:24Speaker 2: is keying on him. So the fact that you have
- 1:46:26Speaker 2: that chemistry, that trust with somebody who's, you know, not
- 1:46:30Speaker 2: your number one receiver, I think ends up being important.
- 1:46:33Speaker 1: In some of those scenarios.
- 1:46:34Speaker 6: Yeah.
- 1:46:34Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 1:46:35Speaker 11: We continue to preach that in our receiver room too.
- 1:46:37Speaker 11: Like everyone, You need to be ready and expected to
- 1:46:40Speaker 11: get the ball. There's never a play where you think
- 1:46:43Speaker 11: you're a decoy route or you think you're the route
- 1:46:46Speaker 11: to get somebody else open.
- 1:46:48Speaker 6: You're a chance of getting the ball every time.
- 1:46:50Speaker 11: And just the fact that we live by that and
- 1:46:53Speaker 11: the receivers are doing a good job of it, they're
- 1:46:55Speaker 11: just ready for their opportunities when it comes.
- 1:46:58Speaker 2: Mack G is probably a better person to ask this question,
- 1:47:00Speaker 2: but I don't get to talk to him this week.
- 1:47:02Speaker 1: Bird was.
- 1:47:04Speaker 2: kind of missing in this game plan he only got
- 1:47:06Speaker 2: a few touches compared to you know usually it's kind
- 1:47:08Speaker 2: of 10 11 uh i think it was four times
- 1:47:11Speaker 2: we saw the bird the ball in bird ficklin's hands
- 1:47:13Speaker 2: with an option for a fifth on maybe another catch
- 1:47:17Speaker 2: uh is there anything behind that is he banged up
- 1:47:22Speaker 2: was it just what you guys were seeing on film
- 1:47:24Speaker 2: why was bird not as much of a game plan
- 1:47:26Speaker 2: this week to your to your knowledge.
- 1:47:28Speaker 11: Yeah um man again certain like our plays with bird
- 1:47:32Speaker 11: is um I guess they're normal plays, if that's what
- 1:47:38Speaker 11: I could say. Some of the stuff he was on
- 1:47:41Speaker 11: was kind of what Hunter was on, and after Hunter
- 1:47:43Speaker 11: hit a couple of those that game, they started to
- 1:47:45Speaker 11: respect the pitch, and he just kind of wasn't there
- 1:47:48Speaker 11: anymore in those opportunities. And then I think Way got
- 1:47:53Speaker 11: a couple more carries than he normally does every game
- 1:47:55Speaker 11: as well.
- 1:47:55Speaker 2: Yeah, I think this is the most we've seen from
- 1:47:57Speaker 2: him this year, 23 carries in the run game.
- 1:48:00Speaker 11: So just also giving him the ball when, when things matter, when,
- 1:48:03Speaker 11: when we need those short yardage and things like that.
- 1:48:05Speaker 11: So just kind of the situation, the game ended up
- 1:48:08Speaker 11: playing out that way.
- 1:48:09Speaker 2: Uh, the, the run game, we've seen a lot of
- 1:48:13Speaker 2: explosive runs from this Utah offense in the first five
- 1:48:16Speaker 2: games of the season. You had Hunter Andrews got one explosive.
- 1:48:21Speaker 2: Way Sean flirted with one.
- 1:48:22Speaker 1: I guess it's 15 plus. He got a 14 yarder.
- 1:48:25Speaker 2: Was Colorado doing anything special that the run game was
- 1:48:28Speaker 2: not quite as explosive against the Buffaloes?
- 1:48:32Speaker 11: Yeah, I think they kind of loaded the box up
- 1:48:34Speaker 11: a little bit on us when at times and Again,
- 1:48:38Speaker 11: I honestly thought we moved the ball pretty well. We
- 1:48:41Speaker 11: just really couldn't score in the red zone, and that
- 1:48:43Speaker 11: was kind of just hurting our momentum. But, I mean,
- 1:48:46Speaker 11: we were able to pass the ball downfield and get
- 1:48:49Speaker 11: down there. You know, you just got to kind of
- 1:48:51Speaker 11: pick your poison, and they decided to key on our
- 1:48:54Speaker 11: run game and try to make us one-dimensional in the
- 1:48:55Speaker 11: pass game.
- 1:48:57Speaker 2: When we get down to that kind of final, you know,
- 1:49:00Speaker 2: game-deciding scenario, and you guys are trying to salt it
- 1:49:03Speaker 2: away by getting a first down, and....
- 1:49:07Speaker 1: Or killing as.
- 1:49:07Speaker 2: Much clock as possible because Colorado does not have any
- 1:49:11Speaker 2: timeouts left. The conventional wisdom is like, all right, even
- 1:49:15Speaker 2: though you got a long distance to go before you
- 1:49:18Speaker 2: hit the sticks, still run the ball because even if
- 1:49:22Speaker 2: they stop you, a bunch of times are going to
- 1:49:23Speaker 2: come off. A pass was called and good pressure ended
- 1:49:28Speaker 2: up in the dirt. Tell me what the communication was
- 1:49:30Speaker 2: like previous to that play call.
- 1:49:32Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 1:49:33Speaker 11: Um, you know, first I take full responsibility of that. Um,
- 1:49:37Speaker 11: I was told if I can complete the ball completed,
- 1:49:39Speaker 11: but if not take the sack, uh, we want to
- 1:49:43Speaker 11: waste clock. And yeah, I don't, I don't really know
- 1:49:46Speaker 11: what happened in my head during that time. I totally
- 1:49:49Speaker 11: blanked out.
- 1:49:49Speaker 2: And is it hard to like, I'm not trying to
- 1:49:51Speaker 2: interrupt you here, but is it hard to be like, all.
- 1:49:54Speaker 1: Right, take a sec. You don't want to take a sec.
- 1:49:58Speaker 2: I have a hard time thinking that there's ever a
- 1:49:59Speaker 2: scenario where you're out there, the competitor that I've come
- 1:50:02Speaker 2: to know you as, where you're just like, I'm definitely
- 1:50:04Speaker 2: not going to complete this pass.
- 1:50:05Speaker 1: Like that's, that feels like a hard thing to ask
- 1:50:08Speaker 1: a player to do.
- 1:50:08Speaker 6: I don't know.
- 1:50:09Speaker 11: Yeah. I, I know me don't blink out like that.
- 1:50:12Speaker 6: And yeah, that was a situation where I did.
- 1:50:14Speaker 11: And, uh, you can tell the frustration of my body
- 1:50:17Speaker 11: language as soon as I kind of let go of
- 1:50:19Speaker 11: the ball where I realized I made that mistake. So, um, Man,
- 1:50:23Speaker 11: I'm just glad everything worked out because I was definitely
- 1:50:26Speaker 11: in my head the whole time on the sideline.
- 1:50:28Speaker 1: Is there a silver lining?
- 1:50:29Speaker 2: I know that you want to maintain the high standard,
- 1:50:32Speaker 2: and you never want to leave things on the field.
- 1:50:35Speaker 2: Is there a silver lining to be found that you
- 1:50:39Speaker 2: played far below the standard on offense and defense, and
- 1:50:42Speaker 2: you still came away with a win against a Big
- 1:50:44Speaker 2: 12 opponent? I know that you don't want it to
- 1:50:48Speaker 2: look like this against Houston, but in a weekend where
- 1:50:53Speaker 2: what seven top 10 teams lost and there was upsets
- 1:50:57Speaker 2: all over the place, even though you didn't play as
- 1:51:00Speaker 2: well as you needed to as a collective team, you
- 1:51:03Speaker 2: still got the win.
- 1:51:04Speaker 1: Is there something to be, to be gained from that?
- 1:51:07Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 1:51:08Speaker 11: Um, I think the biggest thing was, um, that was
- 1:51:11Speaker 11: the first time us offense, we were trailing, um, and
- 1:51:15Speaker 11: just for us to honestly step up and be able
- 1:51:18Speaker 11: to put points on the boy when we were down.
- 1:51:21Speaker 11: you know, that was huge for us, a huge takeaway
- 1:51:23Speaker 11: for us to know that, you know, even though we're down,
- 1:51:26Speaker 11: we're able to trust ourselves that we can go out
- 1:51:28Speaker 11: there and we can go play together and, you know,
- 1:51:31Speaker 11: be one on that field.
- 1:51:32Speaker 6: So I thought a lot of us came together.
- 1:51:33Speaker 11: I think there's a lot of individual efforts during, you know,
- 1:51:38Speaker 11: those last couple.
- 1:51:40Speaker 6: Drives, both offense and defense.
- 1:51:42Speaker 11: Where especially Creed being one, Bobo, you know, those are
- 1:51:47Speaker 11: some big plays that were able to be made that,
- 1:51:49Speaker 11: definitely turned the game around and gave us a chance.
- 1:51:54Speaker 2: How big picture do you let each play get in
- 1:51:57Speaker 2: your mind? Like, I'm trying to ask this the right way,
- 1:52:00Speaker 2: where you're in a couple scenarios, I mean, really on
- 1:52:04Speaker 2: the two throws you hit to Creed, on the touchdown,
- 1:52:06Speaker 2: the second touchdown you hit to Braden, it's kind of
- 1:52:10Speaker 2: like if you don't score there, the momentum is already
- 1:52:13Speaker 2: in Colorado's boat, right? If you don't make this play,
- 1:52:17Speaker 2: if you, the quarterback doesn't throw this ball accurately, your
- 1:52:21Speaker 2: team's probably going to lose the game or has a
- 1:52:23Speaker 2: good chance of losing a game, right? When you're in
- 1:52:27Speaker 2: that scenario and the play call comes in and it's
- 1:52:29Speaker 2: like kind of do or die. And there's three or
- 1:52:31Speaker 2: four of those moments in this game. You haven't really
- 1:52:33Speaker 2: faced those this season yet. It hasn't come down to
- 1:52:37Speaker 2: that competitive a game. And in the first five, how,
- 1:52:41Speaker 2: how do you process it in your mind? Is it,
- 1:52:44Speaker 2: I'm going to make this play and we're going to
- 1:52:46Speaker 2: win the game. Cause if I don't make this play,
- 1:52:48Speaker 2: we're going to lose her. Like, how do you process it?
- 1:52:50Speaker 2: Or is it that big picture? Is it, you just say, no,
- 1:52:53Speaker 2: I'm just going to hit this throw. Like, tell me
- 1:52:55Speaker 2: what it's like inside the helmet of Devin Dampier in
- 1:52:59Speaker 2: those like deciding plays.
- 1:53:01Speaker 6: Yeah. Um, you know, I think that's one of the
- 1:53:04Speaker 6: reasons why I play quarterback.
- 1:53:07Speaker 11: Um, you know, not in a cocky way or selfish way,
- 1:53:09Speaker 11: but I do believe that I'm able to make those decisions. I'm,
- 1:53:13Speaker 11: built for pressure like it's I'm kind of at a
- 1:53:16Speaker 11: point where pressure just feels like another rep like I've
- 1:53:20Speaker 11: been here before I know what to expect I know
- 1:53:22Speaker 11: what I'm capable of doing so honestly I don't get
- 1:53:25Speaker 11: too rattled I just I kind of I'm kind of
- 1:53:28Speaker 11: just a mellow guy I'm like all right bet and
- 1:53:30Speaker 11: then when the play happens like I got to start
- 1:53:33Speaker 11: remembering to get excited but I'm just like I expected
- 1:53:36Speaker 11: that to happen almost and okay so uh yeah I
- 1:53:40Speaker 11: guess you could say in my in my head I'm
- 1:53:42Speaker 11: just I'm very mellow. I'm very– like, allow me to
- 1:53:46Speaker 11: have the opportunity to make some out of this, and
- 1:53:50Speaker 11: you should get a good result.
- 1:53:52Speaker 2: So when Creed comes down with those big catches and
- 1:53:55Speaker 2: the sticks move, or when Braden comes down in the
- 1:53:58Speaker 2: end zone, it's a feeling of relief, or it's a
- 1:54:01Speaker 2: feeling of, yeah, I knew that was.
- 1:54:02Speaker 1: Going to happen?
- 1:54:05Speaker 11: I would say there's more of I knew that was
- 1:54:07Speaker 11: going to happen than relief.
- 1:54:08Speaker 3: All right, wow.
- 1:54:10Speaker 11: Again, me and Creed, ever since I think it was
- 1:54:13Speaker 11: like week two maybe, he might have dropped one of those.
- 1:54:15Speaker 11: And ever since then, like when we get one-on-ones periods,
- 1:54:19Speaker 11: we're working that catch just to make sure, you know,
- 1:54:21Speaker 11: when it comes up in the game, he's good.
- 1:54:24Speaker 6: So, yeah, it just felt like another.
- 1:54:25Speaker 11: You know, we've been in that situation before where it's
- 1:54:28Speaker 11: a one-on-one press, go in.
- 1:54:31Speaker 1: How's the body feeling after the Colorado game?
- 1:54:34Speaker 2: Because you took more contact in this one than you
- 1:54:35Speaker 2: have in probably five of the previous.
- 1:54:38Speaker 6: How are you feeling?
- 1:54:40Speaker 3: Good.
- 1:54:40Speaker 11: Just game day bruises.
- 1:54:42Speaker 6: They're always there, sadly. But bruises are not season-ending.
- 1:54:48Speaker 11: Season-ending injuries are something that will dwell for the rest
- 1:54:52Speaker 11: of the season.
- 1:54:53Speaker 6: So glad they're just that.
- 1:54:55Speaker 2: Devin Dampier is our guest here. Dishing with Dev on
- 1:54:58Speaker 2: a Wednesday. We'll replay it on Thursday. But Dishing with
- 1:55:00Speaker 2: Dev on a Wednesday. Brought to you by Culligan Water
- 1:55:03Speaker 2: of Salt Lake City. America First Credit Union Valley Plumbing, Heating,
- 1:55:06Speaker 2: and Cooling.
- 1:55:08Speaker 6: Undefeated.
- 1:55:09Speaker 1: Number 10 in the country.
- 1:55:11Speaker 2: You guys expected this to be the outcome. There's not
- 1:55:16Speaker 2: a lot of people, even big fans of the program,
- 1:55:19Speaker 2: who thought that this would be an easy thing to
- 1:55:20Speaker 2: do or this would be a possible thing in Morgan
- 1:55:23Speaker 2: Scali's first year. New coordinator on both sides of the ball,
- 1:55:27Speaker 2: new head coach, brand new offensive line, top 10 team.
- 1:55:31Speaker 1: Those things don't usually go together.
- 1:55:33Speaker 6: For sure. Yeah. And I think, I mean, I'm confident
- 1:55:38Speaker 6: in what's been happening.
- 1:55:40Speaker 11: Like I've seen it since the beginning, but just as
- 1:55:44Speaker 11: point of view outside of it, it is pretty crazy.
- 1:55:47Speaker 11: I think Scali does deserve a lot of that credit
- 1:55:50Speaker 11: just to be able to bring in so many new
- 1:55:52Speaker 11: components and make a culture that works, make a culture
- 1:55:56Speaker 11: we're all able to buy into. So yeah, that's a
- 1:55:59Speaker 11: huge shout out to him. But for me, I guess
- 1:56:02Speaker 11: it was expected, honestly. Does it feel weird that the
- 1:56:05Speaker 11: season is halfway gone?
- 1:56:07Speaker 6: Yeah. It's weird that we're already halfway through.
- 1:56:09Speaker 1: Has it gone fast for you?
- 1:56:11Speaker 8: Yeah.
- 1:56:12Speaker 11: This year has been like, I don't know why, but
- 1:56:14Speaker 11: this year has been a lot faster than last year.
- 1:56:17Speaker 11: Maybe just because all the crazy games that's happening and
- 1:56:19Speaker 11: stuff like that. It's making college football just fun to
- 1:56:23Speaker 11: watch every weekend. So it's just going by.
- 1:56:26Speaker 2: So now you turn the page. Top 15 matchup. Number
- 1:56:30Speaker 2: 10 Utes, number 14 Houston Cougars. They're coming off a
- 1:56:33Speaker 2: huge win. Pretty emotional win. against Oklahoma State. You guys
- 1:56:37Speaker 2: are coming off of, I'm just going to say, it's
- 1:56:40Speaker 2: your worst performance of the year, but hopefully you learned
- 1:56:42Speaker 2: the lessons from that. And now game day is here,
- 1:56:45Speaker 2: and it's a big stage. It's as big a stage
- 1:56:47Speaker 2: as you're going to get this season probably.
- 1:56:49Speaker 1: I know that you keep it kind of in routine.
- 1:56:53Speaker 2: You make it as constant as you possibly can, but
- 1:56:58Speaker 2: does anything change for you? Does the schedule change at all?
- 1:57:01Speaker 2: Is there extra interviews with college game day in town?
- 1:57:04Speaker 11: Yeah, there's a little bit of, I guess you could say,
- 1:57:09Speaker 11: extra stuff going on during the week. But, I mean,
- 1:57:12Speaker 11: when it's Friday and that's Saturday, that's how we make
- 1:57:16Speaker 11: sure we're straight football, we're straight around our team. Nothing
- 1:57:21Speaker 11: outside is able to distract us anymore from that point on. So, yeah,
- 1:57:26Speaker 11: I mean, just especially coming off the win we just had,
- 1:57:29Speaker 11: I think we're able to, realized we need to stay hungry,
- 1:57:34Speaker 11: we need to stay gritty, and I think that's honestly
- 1:57:38Speaker 11: boosted up our last couple days of practice too. Just
- 1:57:42Speaker 11: having a win that close made us realize we're not
- 1:57:45Speaker 11: there yet. We definitely picked it up a lot during practice.
- 1:57:50Speaker 11: Some of the slack we felt like we were getting to,
- 1:57:51Speaker 11: and I'm excited to go into this week.
- 1:57:55Speaker 10: What are you seeing from Houston on film? A good
- 1:57:58Speaker 10: team all around, honestly. I think they're playing well offensively
- 1:58:02Speaker 10: and defensively. A team that's going to compete for sure
- 1:58:07Speaker 10: to the end. We're expecting a dogfight and, yeah, let
- 1:58:11Speaker 10: that play out.
- 1:58:13Speaker 2: So on paper, and I know that these matches aren't
- 1:58:17Speaker 2: played out on paper, but it looks like they're better
- 1:58:21Speaker 2: against the run than they are against the pass, which
- 1:58:24Speaker 2: logically would mean that Devin Dampier should be throwing the
- 1:58:28Speaker 2: ball and trying to exploit If there is a weakness
- 1:58:30Speaker 2: in that defense, the secondary is it. I'm not asking
- 1:58:35Speaker 2: you to reveal anything game plan-wise, but does that excite you,
- 1:58:38Speaker 2: the prospect of, hey, we might rely on my arm
- 1:58:41Speaker 2: a little bit more this week than we do in
- 1:58:43Speaker 2: a typical week?
- 1:58:44Speaker 6: Yeah, I mean, you know, I.
- 1:58:49Speaker 11: Love throwing the ball, but, man, whatever honestly gets to win,
- 1:58:53Speaker 11: I can't express enough– wins is a stat that matters
- 1:58:57Speaker 11: to me uh so much more than anything else so
- 1:59:00Speaker 11: yeah if that's how they decide to play if that's
- 1:59:02Speaker 11: how they decide to try to make us win the
- 1:59:04Speaker 11: game um you know i'm more than happy to go
- 1:59:07Speaker 11: that route.
- 1:59:08Speaker 2: Too there's a there's also a thought that uh they
- 1:59:13Speaker 2: you know they score a lot on their possessions right
- 1:59:17Speaker 2: in points per possession they're doing a good job they're
- 1:59:19Speaker 2: actually right behind utah in points per game and in
- 1:59:22Speaker 2: points per possession so um you might want to slow
- 1:59:28Speaker 2: the game down. You might want to run the ball more.
- 1:59:31Speaker 2: You might not want to give them as many offensive possessions.
- 1:59:34Speaker 2: And that has been a successful errand for all of you.
- 1:59:38Speaker 2: Way Sean is one of the best players on this team.
- 1:59:41Speaker 2: If not the best player on the team, your offensive line,
- 1:59:43Speaker 2: as we've talked about every single week has done a
- 1:59:45Speaker 2: really good job. If it comes down to that, if
- 1:59:49Speaker 2: it comes down to like an old fashioned rock fight
- 1:59:51Speaker 2: where you just got to grind out eight eight minute
- 1:59:54Speaker 2: drives is that something you feel based on what you've
- 1:59:57Speaker 2: seen from Houston you can pull off against this because
- 1:59:59Speaker 2: they're an athletic front.
- 2:00:00Speaker 11: For sure yeah no they're they're a talented group as
- 2:00:03Speaker 11: well um we've gone against our defense uh all this
- 2:00:07Speaker 11: time coming coming up to the season so we've played
- 2:00:11Speaker 11: against a good defense we played against um especially a
- 2:00:15Speaker 11: scally defense as him as head coach you know we
- 2:00:18Speaker 11: we've got to have that experience of playing a such
- 2:00:21Speaker 11: talented defense that I mean, we know what to expect.
- 2:00:25Speaker 11: We've been here before in these situations where every drive
- 2:00:29Speaker 11: feels like it matters just.
- 2:00:30Speaker 6: A little bit more.
- 2:00:32Speaker 1: How was Kelvin Obot?
- 2:00:35Speaker 6: As in what way?
- 2:00:36Speaker 1: Like, it looked like he couldn't put any weight on
- 2:00:38Speaker 1: his ankles. He doing all right? Like, I'm not asking
- 2:00:40Speaker 1: you to tell me if he's playing this week. I
- 2:00:43Speaker 1: know that you can't talk about it, but like.
- 2:00:44Speaker 2: I don't know what... He's a true freshman, right? He's
- 2:00:47Speaker 2: a guy who's a starter. He's a big part of
- 2:00:49Speaker 2: this team. And, you know, like when you're 18, 19
- 2:00:53Speaker 2: years old and you're living the dream and then something
- 2:00:56Speaker 2: happens in a game, that's dicey.
- 2:00:58Speaker 1: I'm asking you, like, as a teammate, how does it
- 2:01:00Speaker 1: seem like he's doing?
- 2:01:01Speaker 6: Yeah, I think he's doing well.
- 2:01:04Speaker 11: I checked up on him the other day, too, just
- 2:01:07Speaker 11: asking how he's feeling, especially we've got a great O-line room,
- 2:01:11Speaker 11: a pretty older O-line room that's able to, kind of
- 2:01:14Speaker 11: mentor him and take care of him in those ways, too,
- 2:01:17Speaker 11: and give him that advice on how to recover faster
- 2:01:19Speaker 11: and stuff like that. I think he's in a good headspace, though.
- 2:01:24Speaker 11: He's being loud at practice already with the limited reps
- 2:01:28Speaker 11: he gets, so it's been good.
- 2:01:30Speaker 2: That is not an injury update on Kelvin Obot from
- 2:01:33Speaker 2: Devin Dampier, okay? He's not giving us any information that
- 2:01:36Speaker 2: we're not supposed to have. Blackout game at night at
- 2:01:41Speaker 2: Rice-Echo Center. You guys have played every dang game at night, basically.
- 2:01:44Speaker 3: Yeah, I know.
- 2:01:45Speaker 1: You like it or are you sick of it?
- 2:01:46Speaker 6: It's super at night.
- 2:01:47Speaker 1: I mean, it's cool.
- 2:01:52Speaker 6: It's cool. It's definitely better when it's at home, I
- 2:01:54Speaker 6: would say. Last game was trash. I would not recommend
- 2:01:59Speaker 6: that again.
- 2:02:00Speaker 1: No?
- 2:02:01Speaker 6: Who knows? Who knows?
- 2:02:02Speaker 11: We got home at like 3 a.m. No, like 4.30.
- 2:02:05Speaker 11: I got to my house at 4.30.
- 2:02:07Speaker 1: That's crazy.
- 2:02:08Speaker 6: Yeah. It was an experience.
- 2:02:12Speaker 1: This one's at home though.
- 2:02:13Speaker 6: Yeah.
- 2:02:14Speaker 1: Dark mode, blackout game day. I mean, the stage is set.
- 2:02:18Speaker 2: Do you feel like the team has the right mentality
- 2:02:21Speaker 2: given the full context coming off this Colorado game, knowing
- 2:02:25Speaker 2: how tough Houston is, knowing what the rest of the
- 2:02:27Speaker 2: season could look like because the schedule does get tougher,
- 2:02:30Speaker 2: but you got to focus on one game at a time.
- 2:02:32Speaker 1: Is everyone in the right headspace?
- 2:02:33Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 2:02:34Speaker 11: Uh, Scali doesn't sugarcoat anything during our beans. He's very transparent,
- 2:02:38Speaker 11: very much wants to give us the real on what's
- 2:02:40Speaker 11: going on. And, I feel like he gave us a
- 2:02:42Speaker 11: great rundown of where we're at as a team, where
- 2:02:47Speaker 11: we need to show ourselves, and then also this is
- 2:02:49Speaker 11: a big tester for us. This is a big kind
- 2:02:52Speaker 11: of where do we really stand, what kind of team
- 2:02:55Speaker 11: are we, and that's what this weekend will be able
- 2:02:58Speaker 11: to prove to us.
- 2:02:59Speaker 2: This last weekend, I think, proved to a lot of
- 2:03:01Speaker 2: college football fans how wide open everything really is this
- 2:03:05Speaker 2: year because a bunch of teams in the top ten,
- 2:03:08Speaker 2: Notre Dame loses to BYU, Georgia loses, Texas again, I mean,
- 2:03:13Speaker 2: nobody is safe, basically.
- 2:03:15Speaker 1: So is there a lesson to be learned from that?
- 2:03:20Speaker 6: I mean, you know, Scali says it every week.
- 2:03:22Speaker 11: Like, you know, he watches the college football games just
- 2:03:26Speaker 11: as we do during leading up to our games and
- 2:03:29Speaker 11: stuff like that. And he's always like, man, college football,
- 2:03:33Speaker 11: this is why people love college football.
- 2:03:34Speaker 6: That's right. Anything can happen.
- 2:03:36Speaker 11: It's so crazy that there's not like a team that's just,
- 2:03:41Speaker 11: that can't lose. Like that's not a thing. It's you gotta,
- 2:03:44Speaker 11: you gotta play come out every week with, with that
- 2:03:48Speaker 11: mentality of you gotta.
- 2:03:49Speaker 6: Go get it.
- 2:03:51Speaker 2: I think we talked about this with the Western Michigan,
- 2:03:54Speaker 2: Michigan game at the beginning of the season. But if
- 2:03:59Speaker 2: a referee or an officiating crew doesn't give you a
- 2:04:03Speaker 2: final play when there's one second left on the clock
- 2:04:06Speaker 2: and you have a chance to win a game, but
- 2:04:08Speaker 2: you don't get that chance, How do you process that
- 2:04:11Speaker 2: as a quarterback?
- 2:04:11Speaker 1: That's what happened to C.J. Carr in Provo last week.
- 2:04:15Speaker 11: Yeah, I'd– you know, there's two ways you can go
- 2:04:18Speaker 11: about it. I mean, I'd be upset if, you know,
- 2:04:21Speaker 11: that's the rules of football. I hope you get that
- 2:04:24Speaker 11: one last play because, again, we saw Michigan. They did
- 2:04:28Speaker 11: get that one last play.
- 2:04:29Speaker 6: Yes. And, you know, something worked out for them.
- 2:04:32Speaker 11: And even Florida State, Florida State against Miami, they got–
- 2:04:38Speaker 11: Their plays call back their things.
- 2:04:42Speaker 6: Yeah, I would be hurt for sure, but.
- 2:04:46Speaker 11: You also hope you're not putting yourself in a position
- 2:04:48Speaker 11: where I guess you need that.
- 2:04:49Speaker 6: One last play.
- 2:04:50Speaker 11: You hope you win in a margin where that one
- 2:04:54Speaker 11: last play, hopefully you don't need it.
- 2:04:58Speaker 2: On a last-second play, which didn't end up being a
- 2:05:01Speaker 2: last-second play, as a quarterback, do you just accept you're
- 2:05:04Speaker 2: not going to get a flag even if there's pretty
- 2:05:07Speaker 2: obvious contact and maybe some PI.
- 2:05:11Speaker 11: You know, I always, when it comes to like last
- 2:05:14Speaker 11: second plays, I always live by give your receiver a chance.
- 2:05:16Speaker 11: Like I'd, I'd rather the ball get picked off or
- 2:05:21Speaker 11: at least I made it catchable in a way that
- 2:05:24Speaker 11: instead of trying to throw the perfect ball, like I just,
- 2:05:27Speaker 11: I would rather die on the Hill of, you know,
- 2:05:29Speaker 11: I saw my receiver jump for the ball and whatever
- 2:05:32Speaker 11: happened to happen.
- 2:05:35Speaker 2: Well, going to be a fun one at rice echo stadium.
- 2:05:38Speaker 2: Another night game, blackout eight 15 kickoff.
- 2:05:41Speaker 1: Let's be honest.
- 2:05:42Speaker 2: It'll probably be more like eight 30 because the, the
- 2:05:44Speaker 2: games before we'll go a little bit later. They don't
- 2:05:47Speaker 2: want to start it off on ESPN news or whatever,
- 2:05:50Speaker 2: but man, good luck, big stage, huge game, huge opportunity.
- 2:05:54Speaker 2: And obviously we'll all be behind it.
- 2:05:57Speaker 6: Yeah, for sure. Love our youth.
- 2:06:00Speaker 1: Uh, final message for the fans.
- 2:06:02Speaker 6: Um, It's dark mode. So I know what time it is.
- 2:06:08Speaker 1: Let's go, baby.
- 2:06:09Speaker 2: Rice Stadium on Saturday night. Devin Dampier will be there.
- 2:06:13Speaker 1: I will be there.
- 2:06:14Speaker 2: Hopefully all of you get a chance to be there
- 2:06:16Speaker 2: as well. That's Dishing with Dev. Brought to you by
- 2:06:19Speaker 2: Culligan Water of Salt Lake City, America First Credit Union,
- 2:06:22Speaker 2: and Valley Plumbing, Heating, and Cooling.
- 2:06:27Speaker 6: Another one bites the dust.
- 2:06:29Speaker 4: You're listening to The Sean O'Connell Show, your source for
- 2:06:32Speaker 4: the best youth football coverage.
- 2:06:34Speaker 7: Here's O.C.
- 2:06:35Speaker 4: From the Murdoch Hyundai Studio of ESPN 700 at 92.1 FM.
- 2:06:43Speaker 2: Got a pair of Nickelback tickets to give away coming
- 2:06:46Speaker 2: up in our final segment of the show.
- 2:06:48Speaker 1: Be here in about 10 minutes, and we'll give those
- 2:06:51Speaker 1: away at 877-353-0700.
- 2:06:55Speaker 2: Spence Checketts is broadcasting live at Rally House today from
- 2:06:59Speaker 2: 2 to 6. They've got an incredible selection of Utah gear.
- 2:07:02Speaker 2: They've got Utah Mammoth gear. If you're looking for BYU stuff,
- 2:07:06Speaker 2: they have that as well. Get game day ready at
- 2:07:09Speaker 2: Rally House on 4th South. It is two doors down
- 2:07:13Speaker 2: from the Trader Joe's on 4th South. Signed Utah helmet.
- 2:07:20Speaker 2: Devin Dampier signature on that one. They're going to raffle
- 2:07:22Speaker 2: off a pair of BYU Utah tickets. And they'll have
- 2:07:26Speaker 2: tailgate passes for the Utah BYU game. Free Little Caesars
- 2:07:31Speaker 2: hot and ready pizza while it lasts as well. So
- 2:07:34Speaker 2: swing by when Spence Chekits is broadcasting at Rally House.
- 2:07:40Speaker 5: We know there's at least three of you listening every day.
- 2:07:43Speaker 5: We're there for the BYU gear. So head on out there, right?
- 2:07:47Speaker 5: Head on over there, all three of you. We love
- 2:07:50Speaker 5: our BYU listeners. Yeah, and apparently Rally House, like, I
- 2:07:57Speaker 5: don't know if they're on site at the same time.
- 2:08:00Speaker 5: like on campus at all of the college game days,
- 2:08:02Speaker 5: but they try to be at the places where college
- 2:08:05Speaker 5: game days too.
- 2:08:06Speaker 1: So this is the, that's another reason.
- 2:08:08Speaker 5: Why they're your place to get ready for game day,
- 2:08:10Speaker 5: not just a regular old game, but a college game
- 2:08:14Speaker 5: day game day as well.
- 2:08:15Speaker 6: Interesting.
- 2:08:16Speaker 1: Very interesting.
- 2:08:17Speaker 2: Um, by the way, I, It was in Chicago last week,
- 2:08:22Speaker 2: and the weigh-ins were at a bar right across, at Wrigleyville,
- 2:08:25Speaker 2: right across from Wrigley Field.
- 2:08:28Speaker 3: Oh, yeah.
- 2:08:28Speaker 2: And in the right field corner, so whatever, first baseline,
- 2:08:34Speaker 2: gigantic rally house with all Cubs gear.
- 2:08:37Speaker 3: Oh, really?
- 2:08:39Speaker 1: They're everywhere.
- 2:08:39Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 2:08:40Speaker 5: They're all over the place, baby. So, Hey, so your fight,
- 2:08:43Speaker 5: by the way, was it wind trust arena? That's where
- 2:08:45Speaker 5: the sky play, right? That's the WNBA.
- 2:08:47Speaker 4: Yes.
- 2:08:47Speaker 2: That's where DePaul university plays basketball and where the WNBA
- 2:08:51Speaker 2: sky play.
- 2:08:52Speaker 1: Is that, is that near the United center? Where is
- 2:08:55Speaker 1: that in Chicago? It's far away from the United center.
- 2:08:57Speaker 1: Is it by Wrigley then? Is that why the weigh-ins? No,
- 2:08:59Speaker 1: it's not. It's actually, it's very close to a soldier field. Oh, okay.
- 2:09:04Speaker 2: So like on the, on the shores of Lake Michigan,
- 2:09:07Speaker 2: it's like, there's kind of like a, There's like Lakeshore Drive,
- 2:09:10Speaker 2: which is big.
- 2:09:11Speaker 1: It's basically a highway, right? It's like eight lanes. And
- 2:09:15Speaker 1: then there's a.
- 2:09:16Speaker 2: Convention center and Wintrust Arena is on the, I guess
- 2:09:21Speaker 2: it would be the west end of that convention center.
- 2:09:24Speaker 2: So it's like, I mean, every time we do these events,
- 2:09:28Speaker 2: this is, I think, the fifth time we've done an
- 2:09:29Speaker 2: event at Wintrust Arena. And we stay at the hotel
- 2:09:33Speaker 2: that's attached.
- 2:09:34Speaker 1: I will go walk over to Soldier Field to.
- 2:09:38Speaker 2: The Field Museum, where my gal Sue is at, the
- 2:09:42Speaker 2: largest T-Rex, the most complete T-Rex skeleton is at the
- 2:09:47Speaker 2: Field Museum.
- 2:09:48Speaker 5: I thought you were shouting at a museum worker, and
- 2:09:50Speaker 5: then you started to say largest, and I went, hold on.
- 2:09:53Speaker 2: My gal Sue, big old lady who works at the museum.
- 2:09:58Speaker 3: No.
- 2:09:58Speaker 1: Largest T-Rex fossil there. Yeah, most complete. It's an iconic fossil.
- 2:10:04Speaker 2: And now they have the Chicago Archaeopteryx there, which, of course,
- 2:10:09Speaker 2: was the first fossil that made us connect birds and dinosaurs.
- 2:10:14Speaker 1: Oh, yeah.
- 2:10:15Speaker 2: They've started to name the other ones. They've got a
- 2:10:18Speaker 2: titanosaur that they've tried to give a name.
- 2:10:20Speaker 1: I don't know it. They've got a spinosaurus that they've
- 2:10:23Speaker 1: tried to give a name. I don't know it. I'm
- 2:10:25Speaker 1: a Sioux guy myself. You're Sioux.
- 2:10:27Speaker 5: All you care about is Sioux. All I care about
- 2:10:29Speaker 5: is Sioux. There's a song in there somewhere, a dinosaur
- 2:10:32Speaker 5: named Sioux.
- 2:10:33Speaker 6: Yes.
- 2:10:34Speaker 1: So, yeah, Chicago's a great city if you've never had
- 2:10:37Speaker 1: a chance to go visit.
- 2:10:38Speaker 5: I've never been. I'm fascinated with just how you described it.
- 2:10:42Speaker 1: Obviously.
- 2:10:43Speaker 5: I know that White Sox is on the south side
- 2:10:46Speaker 5: and Wrigley's on the north side, so opposite ends of
- 2:10:49Speaker 5: each other.
- 2:10:50Speaker 1: I know that. I got that general idea.
- 2:10:54Speaker 5: It's interesting how big the Metro is, I guess, that
- 2:10:59Speaker 5: you've got– they have so many teams and yet none
- 2:11:01Speaker 5: of them are that close to each other.
- 2:11:03Speaker 6: Yeah.
- 2:11:03Speaker 1: Except for, of course, Blackhawks and Bulls who play in
- 2:11:06Speaker 1: the same arena.
- 2:11:06Speaker 2: You know, it's actually really kind of a shame, and
- 2:11:09Speaker 2: I don't think about other teams– arenas. I don't think
- 2:11:13Speaker 2: about other cities, stadiums very often, but it really is
- 2:11:19Speaker 2: a wonderful spot for soldier where soldier field is at
- 2:11:23Speaker 2: right on the shores of Lake Michigan. And right next
- 2:11:26Speaker 2: to the aquarium, the shed aquarium is right there.
- 2:11:29Speaker 1: The field museum is there.
- 2:11:30Speaker 2: It's like It's very much like the cultural hub of Chicago.
- 2:11:36Speaker 2: Is the Bean by Soldier Field? The Cloud Gate, as
- 2:11:40Speaker 2: it is officially known. It's all walking distance from one another.
- 2:11:44Speaker 2: What do they call it? The Miracle Mile? The Center
- 2:11:47Speaker 2: for Shopping? You can walk to all of that.
- 2:11:50Speaker 1: It's all there.
- 2:11:52Speaker 2: And now they're going to move the Bears to Hammond, Indiana.
- 2:11:58Speaker 2: Or if they don't, they're going to move to the
- 2:11:59Speaker 2: northern suburbs.
- 2:12:00Speaker 1: And it's like... soldier, like soldier field, it would be similar.
- 2:12:07Speaker 2: And we, we worried about this for a time about,
- 2:12:10Speaker 2: it would be if you, the same thing as if
- 2:12:12Speaker 2: you took the Delta center is like this, like, inflection
- 2:12:16Speaker 2: point this center of the that's where the concerts and
- 2:12:19Speaker 2: where the games and where the whatever if you took
- 2:12:22Speaker 2: that and you put it in draper or in lehigh
- 2:12:25Speaker 2: or vineyard is was one of the it would not
- 2:12:28Speaker 2: feel right it would you'd be like what is this
- 2:12:31Speaker 2: this is crazy and i don't know if bears fans
- 2:12:34Speaker 2: feel the exact same way about that but you know
- 2:12:36Speaker 2: they're when you think of chicago you're thinking of that
- 2:12:41Speaker 2: part of the city. You're thinking of the skyline in
- 2:12:44Speaker 2: the background, the lake right there, and these iconic places
- 2:12:48Speaker 2: where people go to visit and you ride the boats, the.
- 2:12:52Speaker 1: Duck boats and all that kind of stuff.
- 2:12:54Speaker 2: It's all right there, man, where the river gets dyed
- 2:12:57Speaker 2: green and you go through.
- 2:12:58Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 2:12:59Speaker 5: People like me who've never been know about, I didn't
- 2:13:02Speaker 5: know the official name, but know about the bean.
- 2:13:05Speaker 1: Right.
- 2:13:05Speaker 5: And like, it's because it like, that is the spot
- 2:13:10Speaker 5: where the bears should be. It's unfortunate that they couldn't
- 2:13:14Speaker 5: just do what Ryan Smith and Smith entertainment group eventually
- 2:13:20Speaker 5: ended up doing, which was just, you know, refurbish, make
- 2:13:24Speaker 5: the update, the arena, update the stadium. Cause soldier field
- 2:13:29Speaker 5: absolutely needs updating. That's why they're trying to get a
- 2:13:32Speaker 5: new field. It's like, well, why can't you just update
- 2:13:35Speaker 5: it and, Stay in the same spot. Well, they, they,
- 2:13:37Speaker 5: there's obviously lots of reasons. They did update it in 2003.
- 2:13:40Speaker 6: Yeah.
- 2:13:41Speaker 2: Which is like, I got to believe that you actually
- 2:13:47Speaker 2: could just keep it there and do something different.
- 2:13:50Speaker 1: You know what I mean?
- 2:13:50Speaker 5: You could tear it all down and build it as
- 2:13:53Speaker 5: a brand new state of the art thing that you're
- 2:13:55Speaker 5: trying to do.
- 2:13:55Speaker 1: In Hampton, Indiana.
- 2:13:57Speaker 7: Why not?
- 2:13:58Speaker 1: Northwestern has this brand new stadium.
- 2:14:00Speaker 2: You spend one year playing in that stadium while you
- 2:14:02Speaker 2: rebuild soldier field.
- 2:14:04Speaker 1: Let's go. I don't know, man.
- 2:14:06Speaker 2: I'm not here to solve Chicago's arena or stadium problems,
- 2:14:10Speaker 2: but there is this sentiment in professional sports and in
- 2:14:14Speaker 2: college sports, even where you constantly have to be upgrading
- 2:14:18Speaker 2: and you constantly have to be chasing some standard.
- 2:14:21Speaker 1: And I get it right.
- 2:14:22Speaker 2: You, you want amenities, especially when you're being charged 500
- 2:14:26Speaker 2: bucks a game for certain tickets. But when the owners
- 2:14:30Speaker 2: want a reason to charge, more for tickets for sure.
- 2:14:33Speaker 2: I mean, I know that there are a lot of
- 2:14:35Speaker 2: people who, who are like salty about the proposed changes
- 2:14:39Speaker 2: to downtown and the, the entertainment district and the remaking
- 2:14:43Speaker 2: of the salt palace and the walking corridor and all
- 2:14:46Speaker 2: that kind of stuff. And maybe, well, not maybe definitely
- 2:14:53Speaker 2: using tax dollars when you're billionaires is an ethical challenge
- 2:14:58Speaker 2: at the very least. However, When you look at those renderings,
- 2:15:02Speaker 2: I get caught up in the hype, man. It's going
- 2:15:05Speaker 2: to look really cool.
- 2:15:06Speaker 1: I would think there's going to be a lot of
- 2:15:08Speaker 1: foot traffic. Have you been to Vegas?
- 2:15:10Speaker 2: Have you been to Vegas in that end of Vegas
- 2:15:13Speaker 2: where T-Mobile Arena is now?
- 2:15:15Speaker 4: Yeah.
- 2:15:16Speaker 1: That's like right in the heart of the strip.
- 2:15:19Speaker 2: That corner of the strip where it's just like, I mean,
- 2:15:21Speaker 2: if you don't have tickets to a Golden Knights game, bummer.
- 2:15:26Speaker 2: But you can also just go stand on the Plaza,
- 2:15:29Speaker 2: go grab yourself some food, go sit on some of
- 2:15:31Speaker 2: the stuff. And you can watch the golden Knights game
- 2:15:35Speaker 2: on this massive screen.
- 2:15:36Speaker 1: They have on the side.
- 2:15:37Speaker 2: Of T-Mobile arena while you people watch all the, all
- 2:15:40Speaker 2: the Elvis impersonators and other impersonators on the streets of Vegas.
- 2:15:45Speaker 2: And you tell the fake Spider-Man that you're not going
- 2:15:48Speaker 2: to pay him for a photo with him.
- 2:15:49Speaker 5: It's unless, unless you go, wait, are you Devin Dampier
- 2:15:52Speaker 5: or Donovan Mitchell?
- 2:15:54Speaker 1: Okay, then no, I'm not going to take a photo.
- 2:15:57Speaker 2: So it was 2001 when the Chicago Park District and
- 2:16:00Speaker 2: local officials gave a approval for a modernization project that
- 2:16:07Speaker 2: basically added onto the facade of Soldier Field, made it
- 2:16:11Speaker 2: look like a spaceship.
- 2:16:12Speaker 6: Yeah.
- 2:16:14Speaker 2: That was completed in 2003, September 29th, 2003. 61,000 seats,
- 2:16:22Speaker 2: 133 luxury seats, 8,600 club seats, two large video boards,
- 2:16:29Speaker 2: LED signage, underground parking garage. I didn't even know about that.
- 2:16:34Speaker 2: And added 17 acres of public parking space. And that
- 2:16:41Speaker 2: was 23 years ago, and now you're going to rip
- 2:16:43Speaker 2: it down and take the team outside of the city.
- 2:16:47Speaker 1: Outside of the state, probably. Yeah, I was... 100%.
- 2:16:53Speaker 2: Sure that with how much I enjoy Salt Lake bees games,
- 2:16:58Speaker 2: that I was going to attend games, not as many
- 2:17:02Speaker 2: as when they were right down on 13 South. I
- 2:17:05Speaker 2: was a hundred percent sure that I was going to
- 2:17:07Speaker 2: still attend at least a few Salt Lake bees games
- 2:17:11Speaker 2: a year. When they moved out to daybreak, I have
- 2:17:13Speaker 2: been to a grand total of zero since they moved.
- 2:17:17Speaker 2: And not because I haven't been invited. Our guy, Tony parks.
- 2:17:20Speaker 1: Will come in. Oh, come on.
- 2:17:22Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 2:17:22Speaker 2: And just come on out. Enjoy the park. It takes
- 2:17:25Speaker 2: an hour to get there when you got kids. And
- 2:17:29Speaker 2: if you want to ride the tracks, you got to
- 2:17:30Speaker 2: go park and you got to take the, like, it
- 2:17:33Speaker 2: takes the time of day that a lot of these
- 2:17:35Speaker 2: games are starting. You got to get on the road
- 2:17:37Speaker 2: and there's still residual traffic being left over from, from
- 2:17:41Speaker 2: people going home from work. I, I just, I haven't gone.
- 2:17:45Speaker 2: And I feel like having teams and arenas. centrally located
- 2:17:51Speaker 2: is the biggest no brainer in the world. And they're
- 2:17:53Speaker 2: going to take the soldier field and the bears out
- 2:17:56Speaker 2: to the burbs. It would have been an absolute travesty
- 2:18:00Speaker 2: to lose the Delta center to vineyard. And I think the,
- 2:18:05Speaker 2: knock on wood, cross your fingers, throw the salt, whatever
- 2:18:08Speaker 2: you do to fix your superstitions. When major league baseball
- 2:18:12Speaker 2: bestows upon this market, an expansion team, that power district
- 2:18:20Speaker 2: baseball field, that project they have out there is going
- 2:18:24Speaker 2: to then expand our entire downtown footprint because the between
- 2:18:30Speaker 2: here and there, sorry about gentrification.
- 2:18:32Speaker 1: Sorry, everyone.
- 2:18:34Speaker 2: On North temple right now that has decent rents and
- 2:18:37Speaker 2: in Rose park that has decent housing prices. I just,
- 2:18:41Speaker 2: I feel like that is going to change the dynamic
- 2:18:44Speaker 2: pretty significantly for those areas.
- 2:18:49Speaker 6: Yeah.
- 2:18:49Speaker 1: And hopefully you don't have.
- 2:18:52Speaker 5: That much of the, if not any, but realistically you're
- 2:18:56Speaker 5: probably going to have some of the negative effects of
- 2:18:58Speaker 5: gentrification in that area, in that area. Hopefully they're able
- 2:19:02Speaker 5: to avoid most of that. And still upgrade, update that
- 2:19:07Speaker 5: area in a way that will make it really cool.
- 2:19:09Speaker 5: I was going to say, I was going to chime
- 2:19:11Speaker 5: in and say, that's what we're talking about is a
- 2:19:14Speaker 5: reason why I love that the Millers are proposing a
- 2:19:18Speaker 5: park in Salt Lake City. Yes, not near what's been
- 2:19:22Speaker 5: the traditional downtown, but not that far from it. And also,
- 2:19:27Speaker 5: it's not the traditional downtown, but it's still a central area.
- 2:19:30Speaker 5: because right next to the fair park, like that's still
- 2:19:32Speaker 5: a spot where people go to, especially during fairs. It's
- 2:19:35Speaker 5: so accessible to and from downtown because already tracks line
- 2:19:39Speaker 5: is already there. I, I, and bus lines go there.
- 2:19:43Speaker 4: Yeah.
- 2:19:43Speaker 2: So our sideline reporter in the PFL is, um, she's
- 2:19:48Speaker 2: marrying a professional baseball pitcher, a guy who throws for
- 2:19:51Speaker 2: the Cardinals. And I'm like, just wait, this is going
- 2:19:54Speaker 2: to be for a visiting teams, uh, if we get
- 2:19:57Speaker 2: this park done and we get the team, this is
- 2:19:59Speaker 2: going to be like the most popular park to come
- 2:20:01Speaker 2: to basically across street from the airport. You fly in
- 2:20:05Speaker 2: and six minutes later, you're at the hotel. That's going
- 2:20:09Speaker 2: to be across from the park, the ballpark that is
- 2:20:12Speaker 2: five minutes away from the airport.
- 2:20:13Speaker 1: Everyone is going to love coming to Salt Lake city
- 2:20:16Speaker 1: in and out.
- 2:20:17Speaker 5: Like Devin talked about and Colton talked about, they, they
- 2:20:21Speaker 5: like night games at home. And I think even, uh,
- 2:20:26Speaker 5: I think on Spence's show, they talked about this as well.
- 2:20:29Speaker 5: Someone talked about this as well. They like night games
- 2:20:31Speaker 5: at home are ideal. It was Gooby Scott.
- 2:20:34Speaker 1: He, he, he mentioned it too. Road night games are
- 2:20:39Speaker 1: kind of the worst.
- 2:20:40Speaker 5: And that actually informed probably why rice Eccles has been
- 2:20:45Speaker 5: such a fortress at night is because those have been,
- 2:20:50Speaker 5: and why it's been fortunate that Utah has, has had
- 2:20:52Speaker 5: most of those kind of, kickoffs at home because apparently
- 2:20:58Speaker 5: that's like almost nightmarish for road teams to be able
- 2:21:02Speaker 5: to have to play at that game. And it kind
- 2:21:04Speaker 5: of informs maybe why they were so, why Utah was
- 2:21:07Speaker 5: so off against Colorado for at least one reason.
- 2:21:10Speaker 3: Why?
- 2:21:11Speaker 6: All right.
- 2:21:12Speaker 1: Got to take a break. We're going to come back.
- 2:21:13Speaker 2: We're going to give away some Nickelback tickets and then
- 2:21:16Speaker 2: we'll send it to rally house where Spence checkups is
- 2:21:19Speaker 2: doing his show from today. It's Utah's number one sports

- 2:21:47Speaker 2: Nickelback is coming to the Delta Center April 22nd of
- 2:21:51Speaker 2: next year.
- 2:21:52Speaker 1: A pair of.
- 2:21:52Speaker 2: Tickets if you could answer this trivia question. Utah Jazz
- 2:21:56Speaker 2: opened their regular season last night. Darren Peterson making his
- 2:22:00Speaker 2: NBA regular season debut after being the number two overall
- 2:22:04Speaker 2: pick for the Utah Jazz in the last NBA draft.
- 2:22:09Speaker 2: How many points did DP score in his first regular
- 2:22:13Speaker 2: season NBA game? 877-353-0700 for a pair of Nickelback tickets
- 2:22:16Speaker 2: if you've got.
- 2:22:16Speaker 1: The correct answer. Stay tuned for the drive with Spence Checketts.
- 2:22:27Speaker 2: He's at Rally House just next door to Trader Joe's

- 2:22:37Speaker 2: to Utah BYU. They've got a signed Devin Dampier helmet
