- 0:12Hello friends, it's Sean here. Happy Monday to you.
- 0:16It is the 15th of January and I hope you're doing well.
- 0:20I don't know what this week holds for you.
- 0:22It is a big week for me. But that is I guess it's part of
- 0:26the new year, right? I don't know how it's going for
- 0:29you. I really thought January would
- 0:31be a nice slow settled start to the year, but it has been
- 0:34anything but in my corner of the world and I hope that yours is
- 0:39going alright as we we get back to the story.
- 0:43And this is the beginning of the kings of Israel and it is a bit
- 0:46of a hectic beginning as well. And we have heard Samuel, he has
- 0:50come, he has grown up in God's service.
- 0:54He has found this new king named Saul.
- 0:57The people have welcomed him and this week we will see how Saul
- 1:01goes on as king and well. Unfortunately by the end of this
- 1:05week God will have already been a little bit fed up with him.
- 1:10That is all to come. Let us see the ups and the downs
- 1:13at the beginning of this time of the kings in Israel, and let us
- 1:19invite the Holy Spirit in Holy Spirit as we read these
- 1:24chapters. Reveal yourself to us so that we
- 1:29can learn more about you and your kingship in our life here
- 1:32today. All right, friends, let's do it,
- 1:35shall we? Let us read together First
- 1:38Samuel chapter 12. Then Samuel addressed all
- 1:52Israel. I have done as you asked and
- 1:55given you a king. Your king is now your leader.
- 1:59I stand here before you, an old grey haired man and my sons
- 2:05serve you. I have served you as your leader
- 2:09from the time I was a boy to this very day.
- 2:13Now testify against me in the presence of the Lord and before
- 2:17his anointed one. Whose ox or donkey have I
- 2:20stolen? Have I ever cheated any of you?
- 2:24Have I ever oppressed you? Have I ever taken a bribe and
- 2:28perverted justice? Tell me, and I will make right
- 2:33whatever I have done wrong. No, they replied.
- 2:37You have never cheated or oppressed us, and you have never
- 2:40taken even a single bribe. The Lord and his anointed one
- 2:46are my witnesses today. Samuel declared that my hands
- 2:51are clean. Yes, he is a witness, they
- 2:56replied. It was the Lord who appointed
- 3:00Moses and Aaron, Samuel continued.
- 3:03He brought your ancestors out of the land of Egypt.
- 3:07Now stand here quietly before the Lord, as I remind you of all
- 3:12the great things the Lord has done for you and your ancestors.
- 3:17When the Israelites were in Egypt and cried out to the Lord,
- 3:21he sent Moses and Aaron to rescue them from Egypt and to
- 3:25bring them into this land. But the people soon forgot about
- 3:29the Lord their God, So he handed them over to Sisera, the
- 3:34commander of Hazel's army, and also to the Philistines, and to
- 3:39the king of Moab who fought against them.
- 3:43Then they cried to the Lord again and confessed.
- 3:47We have sinned by turning away from the Lord and worshipping
- 3:51the images of Barlin Ashtoreth. But we will worship you and you
- 3:56alone, if you will rescue us from our enemies.
- 4:00Then the Lord sent Gideon, Bedan, Jaffa, and Samuel to save
- 4:06you, and you lived in safety. But when you were afraid of
- 4:11Nahash, the king of Ammon, you came to me and said that you
- 4:15wanted a king to reign over you, even though the Lord your God
- 4:19was already your king. All right, here is the king you
- 4:23have chosen. You asked for him, and the Lord
- 4:26has granted your request. Now if you fear and worship the
- 4:31Lord and listen to his voice, and if you do not rebel against
- 4:35the Lord's commands, then both you and your king will show that
- 4:39you recognise the Lord as your God.
- 4:43But if you rebel against the Lord's commands and refuse to
- 4:47listen to him, then his hand will be as heavy upon you as it
- 4:51was upon your ancestors. Now stand here and see the great
- 4:57thing the Lord is about to do. You know that it does not rain
- 5:01at this time of the year during the wheat harvest.
- 5:05I will ask the Lord to send Thunder and rain today.
- 5:09Then you will realise how wicked you have been In asking the Lord
- 5:13for a king. Sir Samuel called to the Lord,
- 5:17and the Lord sent Thunder and rain that day, and all the
- 5:21people were terrified of the Lord and of Samuel.
- 5:25Pray to the Lord your God for us, or we will die, they all
- 5:30said to Samuel. For now we have added to our
- 5:33sins by asking for a king. Don't be afraid, Samuel
- 5:39reassured them. You have certainly done wrong.
- 5:42But make sure now that you worship the Lord with all your
- 5:46heart and don't turn your back on him.
- 5:49Don't go back to worshipping worthless idols that cannot help
- 5:53or rescue you. They are totally useless.
- 5:57The Lord will not abandon His people, because that would
- 6:01dishonour his great name, for it has pleased the Lord to make you
- 6:05His very own people. As for me, I will certainly not
- 6:11sin against the Lord by ending my prayers for you, and I will
- 6:15continue to teach you what is good and right.
- 6:18But be sure to fear the Lord and faithfully serve Him.
- 6:23Think of all the wonderful things He has done for you.
- 6:27But if you continue to sin, you and your king will be swept
- 6:32away. Lord, here we are at the
- 6:46beginning of a new year, and there you are, our faithful God,
- 6:52continuing to stand in readiness to journey with us, to uphold us
- 6:58in your care, no matter what we do or don't do to honour you.
- 7:03You are gracious and forgiving. Lot of pray that as this year
- 7:09begins to open up and pan out, that you would continue to draw
- 7:14us to you. That you would mould our hearts.
- 7:17That you would shape our minds. That our plans would reflect
- 7:21your priorities and then our hearts would continue to soften
- 7:27with love for the vulnerable, with humility, and with
- 7:32difference always to you. We love you, Lord, and we thank
- 7:37you for the gift of Jesus, and in His name we pray all these
- 7:40things. Amen.
