- 0:05This is a show where we discuss the critical crossroads that
- 0:08shape SpaceX, Tesla X, The Boring Company, and Neuralink.
- 0:13I'm your host, Will Walden. SpaceX is preparing to launch
- 0:17its powerful Starship rockets from multiple sites in Florida,
- 0:22with the Federal Aviation Administration, or the FAA
- 0:25initiating a new environmental review for Spacex's operations
- 0:29and NASA's Kennedy Space Center at KSC.
- 0:32This review, announced on May 10th, will evaluate Spacex's
- 0:36plans for launching Starships from Lodge Complex 39 A now
- 0:41simultaneously, the US Space Force is conducting a similar
- 0:44Environmental Impact statement, or EIS, for Spacex's proposal to
- 0:48use Space Launch Complex 37 at Cape Canaveral.
- 0:52Space Forestation SLC 37 recently became available after
- 0:57ULA last Delta rocket mission. These environmental reviews are
- 1:01crucial for Spacex's goal to have operational Starship launch
- 1:05sites in Florida by the end of 2025.
- 1:08Sometimes these reviews take a couple of years and the FA as
- 1:12decision on Spacex's proposals will follow these environmental
- 1:16reviews. Subsequently, the FAA will
- 1:18conduct a separate licensing process similar to how it
- 1:21licensed the 1st 3 Starship launches from South Texas.
- 1:25This process is essential for ensuring public safety and
- 1:28compliance with environmental laws.
- 1:30SpaceX has significant contracts with NASA worth over $4 billion
- 1:35to develop a version of Starship capable of landing astronauts on
- 1:39the moon. And for this mission, SpaceX
- 1:41plans to use a series of Starship tanker flights to
- 1:44refuel a lunar Lander in low Earth orbit, necessitating
- 1:47multiple launches from at least two pads, potentially
- 1:50alternating between Texas and Florida.
- 1:53And in order for all of this to work, NASA is working with
- 1:56SpaceX to make sure that the timeline, the EIS timeline, and
- 2:00NASA's all work in parallel as much as they can.
- 2:03SpaceX aims to perform a dress rehearsal for the Starship lunar
- 2:07Lander in about late 2025. This will involve refueling
- 2:12missions in uncrewed lunar landing and a subsequent takeoff
- 2:16from the moon. The first human flight in the
- 2:19Artemis mission using Starship is slated for around 2029.
- 2:25Now Artemis 3, and despite the environmental review process,
- 2:29SpaceX faces numerous technical challenge in orbit.
- 2:33Refueling is one of them, and a habitable crew cabin for
- 2:36astronauts as well. These tasks are complex and time
- 2:40consuming, could take years, but they're essential for the
- 2:43success of the Artemis program. In addition to these technical
- 2:46hurdles, SpaceX must construct new Starship pads.
- 2:50While some infrastructure exists on LC39A, critical components
- 2:55like propellant storage and fueling systems are not quite in
- 2:58place yet. This construction must proceed
- 3:01within the scope of the 2019 environmental assessment until
- 3:04further approval. Now, the Artemis program
- 3:07involves more than just SpaceX. Axiom Space is developing a new
- 3:10space suit for astronauts and NASA Space Launch System.
- 3:14The SLS rocket and Orion spacecraft are essential for
- 3:17transporting astronauts to the Moon.
- 3:19These elements must be ready to ensure a timely lunar landing
- 3:22mission. Now at Launch Complex 39, A
- 3:26SpaceX had already initiated the construction of a Starship
- 3:29launch tower, which is a structure that stands over 450
- 3:33feet tall. However, this is just the
- 3:35beginning. For the launch site to be fully
- 3:37operational, significant additional infrastructure is
- 3:40required. This includes comprehensive
- 3:42propellant storage systems that can house the vast quantities of
- 3:46cryogenic fuels needed for Starship launches.
- 3:48The storage systems must be capable of handling the specific
- 3:51requirements of methane and liquid oxygen, the fuels used by
- 3:55starship's Raptor engines. Now Furthermore, fueling
- 3:58infrastructure at LC39A is crucial for efficient and safe
- 4:02launch operations. This involves constructing
- 4:04pipelines, pumps, and safety systems to manage the highly
- 4:07volatile fuels, and the current state of the site lacks these
- 4:11integral systems, which are necessary for transferring the
- 4:13fuels from storage tanks to the rocket.
- 4:16And without this infrastructure, SpaceX cannot proceed with the
- 4:19frequent and reliable launch schedule innovations for
- 4:22Starship missions, both for NASA's Artemis program and other
- 4:26commercial endeavors in the future.
- 4:28Now the ongoing construction work at LC39A must adhere to the
- 4:31guidelines set forth in the 2019 Environmental Assessment.
- 4:35Any significant changes or additions to the original plans
- 4:38require further environmental review and approval from NASA
- 4:41and the FAA, and this regulatory framework ensures that the
- 4:45development does not adversely affect the surrounding
- 4:47environment and it complies with federal laws.
- 4:50Now NASA has emphasized the SpaceX, as a tenant of this LC
- 4:5439 area, must receive prior approval for any construction
- 4:59related to starships launch and landing facilities.
- 5:02This is rigorous oversight involved in developing such a
- 5:05significant launch site for such a massive rocket.
- 5:09But beyond the infrastructure, SpaceX is also considering
- 5:12implementing a water deluge system at LC39A.
- 5:15The system is designed to mitigate the extreme acoustic
- 5:18and thermal forces generated during a rocket launch by
- 5:21flooding the pad with water. Such system is vital for
- 5:24protecting the launchpad structures and minimizing damage
- 5:27from the inverse vibrations and heat.
- 5:30This addition, derived from lessons learned during test
- 5:32flights in Texas, demonstrates that SpaceX is approached is
- 5:37refining the launch infrastructure.
- 5:39Now, however, incorporating the system will also require careful
- 5:42planning and possibly further environmental assessments to
- 5:46ensure it meets regulatory standards and effectively
- 5:48supports the high launch frequency the SpaceX aims for.
- 5:53The FAA's Commercial Space Office is truly underfunded,
- 5:57impacting the speed of the review process in Florida.
- 6:01SpaceX has advocated for increasing funding to expedite
- 6:05the licensing process, which is critical for the timely launch
- 6:07of Starship missions. Now, the fact that it takes
- 6:11years for this to happen is not a good thing, and in a scenario
- 6:16where SpaceX is ready for lunar missions Bolex FAE approval for
- 6:20Florida launches, they may just launch these from Texas.
- 6:24However, the preferred plan remains to utilize both Texas
- 6:27and Florida launch sites. SpaceX is 20 year lease for
- 6:31LC39A, which is signed in 2014, has already seen 83 missions
- 6:36launched from the pad with Falcon 9 and Falcon Heavy
- 6:39rockets. Previous environmental
- 6:41assessments from 2019 must be updated to reflect Spacex's
- 6:45current launch plans, which now project up to 44 Starship
- 6:49flights per year. The proposed Super Heavy booster
- 6:52will also feature more engines than initially planned,
- 6:55requiring revised environmental evaluations.
- 6:58Now SpaceX is iterative development model for Starship
- 7:01and involves continuous testing and improvement.
- 7:04Its approach necessitates significant infrastructure at
- 7:06its primary development site, which is in Starbase, Texas.
- 7:10SpaceX is expanding its facility there to support higher
- 7:13production and also higher launch rates.
- 7:16Now Kathy leaders said that they have 3000 employees working at
- 7:22Starbase now. It's intended to be a permanent
- 7:24site for Starship production and testing, with additional
- 7:27launchpads and assembly buildings under construction
- 7:30right now. And while Starbase is the
- 7:32primary development site, SpaceX plans to operate launchpads in
- 7:36Florida to meet its mission demands.
- 7:39This includes ongoing constructions and new facilities
- 7:41AT39A, and also SLC 37 and SLC 50.
- 7:46To support the high launch frequency needed for Starship
- 7:49missions to lower Earth orbit, to the Moon and to Mars, SpaceX
- 7:53is shifting plans for Starship in Florida reflect the company's
- 7:57adaptive approach. Initial plans to use the mobile
- 7:59offshore platforms for launches have been set aside.
- 8:03They sold those, and instead SpaceX is focusing on fixed
- 8:06launchpads and established space ports like Cape Canaveral.
- 8:10The development of Starship infrastructure in Florida will
- 8:12enable SpaceX to achieve the launch cadence required for both
- 8:16NASA's Artemis missions and commercial ventures like
- 8:18Starlink satellite deployments. Further expansions may include a
- 8:22rocket factory at Florida's Space Coast to support these
- 8:25operations. Ultimately, the success of
- 8:27Spacex's plans hinges on timely regulatory approvals,
- 8:31technological advancements in the seamless integration of
- 8:34various mission elements, all of which are essential for the
- 8:38future of human space exploration.
