- 2:48September 30th, it is a Wednesday, that means
- 2:50tomorrow, that's right, guys, it'll be September 1st.
- 2:54Welcome, everyone, to the ever-popular Inspirations for
- 2:57Your Life show.
- 2:59I'm John C.
- 3:00Morley.
- 3:00I'm a serial entrepreneur.
- 3:02I'm an engineer, marketing specialist, video producer, podcast
- 3:04host, coach, keynote speaker, passionate lifelong learner, a
- 3:08graduate student at Montclair State University, and so
- 3:10grateful now to be a published author.
- 3:13Our weekly master topic is your actions are
- 3:17telling the truth about you.
- 3:19All week, I've been closing the distance between
- 3:22what we say, what we actually do, and
- 3:25today, I'm going after something that can be
- 3:29uncomfortable to admit.
- 3:32Success feels empty when it's all about you.
- 3:36Now, don't misunderstand me.
- 3:39I believe in ambition.
- 3:40I believe in setting enormous goals.
- 3:43I believe in working hard, building things, becoming
- 3:46better, earning more, accomplishing more, and refusing to
- 3:50settle for a life that's smaller than your
- 3:52potential.
- 3:54But achievement and fulfillment are not always the
- 3:57same thing.
- 3:58You can reach the goal and still feel
- 4:01empty inside.
- 4:02You can get the title and still feel
- 4:04empty.
- 4:05You can make the money and still feel
- 4:08empty.
- 4:09You can finally receive the recognition you've been
- 4:13chasing and discover that applause doesn't automatically create
- 4:17meaning for you.
- 4:18That's why success becomes richer when it creates
- 4:23value beyond you.
- 4:26Ask yourself a simple little question.
- 4:28Who benefits from what I'm building?
- 4:31If the answer is always me, maybe it's
- 4:34time to expand the definition of success in
- 4:37your life.
- 4:39Ambition doesn't have to become selfish.
- 4:42You can pursue your goals, relentlessly, and still
- 4:45care deeply about other people.
- 4:48In fact, I believe the two can strengthen
- 4:52each other.
- 4:53Think about the people helping you succeed right
- 4:56now in your life.
- 4:58Somebody introduced you to someone else.
- 5:01Somebody taught you something.
- 5:03Somebody gave you an opportunity.
- 5:04Somebody encouraged you.
- 5:06Somebody answered.
- 5:08Yes, somebody answered.
- 5:12Somebody answered your question.
- 5:14Somebody believed in you when the outcome wasn't
- 5:18guaranteed.
- 5:20Did you notice them?
- 5:21Did you think about them?
- 5:23Gratitude keeps achievement in perspective because it reminds
- 5:27us that very few people truly accomplish everything
- 5:31alone.
- 5:32That's key.
- 5:33Don't become so focused on winning that you
- 5:35stop noticing the people around you.
- 5:39There's another challenge.
- 5:41Make room for somebody else's success.
- 5:46That's hard for a lot of people.
- 5:48Why should I celebrate your success?
- 5:50Well, when you celebrate somebody else's success, they
- 5:57automatically want to celebrate yours and you get
- 5:59that great feeling.
- 6:02Someone else's win does not automatically become your
- 6:05loss.
- 6:07Helping somebody doesn't diminish your progress.
- 6:10If I give you an idea that helps
- 6:13you grow, I haven't lost my ability to
- 6:15grow.
- 6:16If I introduce you to somebody who could
- 6:20change your career, my career doesn't suddenly shrink.
- 6:25If I teach you something that took me
- 6:2710 years to learn, my experience doesn't suddenly
- 6:31disappear.
- 6:33Your experience can become somebody else's shortcut.
- 6:38Think about how powerful that is.
- 6:40Something that took you years of mistakes and
- 6:44frustrations, experimentation, and learning could save another person
- 6:48months or even years.
- 6:50Share it.
- 6:51Give people a hand when you can.
- 6:54Give credit generously too.
- 6:57You don't need to capture every ounce of
- 7:00recognition.
- 7:01If somebody contributed, say it.
- 7:03If somebody had the idea, acknowledge it.
- 7:06If somebody helped make the result possible, don't
- 7:09rewrite the story so you become the only
- 7:12hero.
- 7:13Confidence doesn't need to steal credit.
- 7:18And when people speak to you, listen to
- 7:21them.
- 7:22Not the kind of listening where you're silently
- 7:25preparing your next sentence.
- 7:28Really listen.
- 7:29And sometimes we're so busy proving how much
- 7:34we know that we miss what another person
- 7:37is trying to tell us.
- 7:39That leads into something even bigger.
- 7:43Relationships should not become transactions.
- 7:46Do you know people who contact you only
- 7:50when they need something?
- 7:51Yep, we've all had those kind of people.
- 7:54The question is, what are we doing with
- 7:56those people?
- 7:57And I think that's something that, again, a
- 7:59lot of people today don't realize.
- 8:02Don't become that person.
- 8:04Stop measuring everybody by what they can do
- 8:08for you.
- 8:10One of the best things you can do
- 8:11is help somebody who can't help you.
- 8:13You might say, John, why do I want
- 8:14to do that?
- 8:14Because see, when you help other people, karma
- 8:18comes around.
- 8:20Karma pays back.
- 8:21Make people feel valued before you need something
- 8:26from them.
- 8:28Call someone because you actually care.
- 8:32Check in without asking for a favor.
- 8:35Congratulate someone for something that you want to
- 8:42be appreciative of.
- 8:44Maybe congratulate someone when there's nothing in it
- 8:46for you.
- 8:48Help someone without immediately calculating the return.
- 8:52I know some people, well, I don't want
- 8:54to spend time with him or her because
- 8:55they don't have anything that can help me.
- 8:58They don't have any money.
- 8:58They don't have any connections.
- 8:59There's nothing they can do for me.
- 9:00That's a terrible attitude.
- 9:02Because, you see, success without meaningful relationships can
- 9:06become incredibly lonely.
- 9:09Imagine achieving everything you said you wanted, but
- 9:12having nobody you genuinely care about standing beside
- 9:16you when you get it.
- 9:18Was that really success?
- 9:20Influence also carries responsibility.
- 9:24As you become more successful, more people may
- 9:28listen to you.
- 9:29More people may follow your example.
- 9:32Your decisions may affect employees, customers, colleagues, family
- 9:36members, students, audiences, or even communities.
- 9:40What are you doing with that influence?
- 9:44Use what you've learned to make something better.
- 9:47That doesn't mean you need to solve every
- 9:50problem in the world.
- 9:51Start with what's in front of you right
- 9:55this very moment.
- 9:56Be present.
- 9:57Be aware.
- 9:58Help just one person.
- 10:01Can you teach just one lesson?
- 10:05Can you make just one introduction?
- 10:09Can you just encourage one person?
- 10:12Can you create something useful?
- 10:15Just one thing.
- 10:17Could you open a door when you have
- 10:19the ability to open it?
- 10:21And periodically ask yourself, do my goals actually
- 10:25reflect my values?
- 10:27Are my values and my goals in alignment?
- 10:31That's a powerful question because sometimes we're chasing
- 10:35goals we haven't examined in years.
- 10:40Maybe you're pursuing something because somebody told you
- 10:42success was supposed to look that way.
- 10:45More money.
- 10:46Another title.
- 10:47Another award.
- 10:48Another client.
- 10:49Another accomplishment.
- 10:50There is nothing inherently wrong with any of
- 10:53these things, but don't sacrifice every meaningful relationship
- 10:57for another achievement.
- 11:00Make time for the people who matter in
- 11:02your life.
- 11:03I think that's important.
- 11:05You can always find another task to complete,
- 11:08right?
- 11:09There'll always be another email, project, phone call,
- 11:13deadline, opportunity, meeting, or even goal to achieve
- 11:16or make.
- 11:18Some moments with people don't come back.
- 11:22And while you're moving forward, notice who gets
- 11:24overlooked.
- 11:26Sometimes the person who needs encouragement isn't the
- 11:30loudest person in the team.
- 11:33Sometimes it's the employee whose work everyone takes
- 11:39for granted.
- 11:41The student who doesn't raise their hand.
- 11:45The person sitting alone.
- 11:47The friend who has quietly been struggling.
- 11:51The person doing excellent work without demanding recognition.
- 11:56Notice people.
- 11:58Small acts of generosity can have a lasting
- 12:02impact.
- 12:02A sincere thank you.
- 12:04A thoughtful introduction.
- 12:06Five minutes of advice.
- 12:08Give somebody a sincere compliment.
- 12:12Give somebody credit publicly.
- 12:15Remembering someone's name.
- 12:18Check in with them.
- 12:19Listen when they need to talk.
- 12:22You may forget doing it.
- 12:24They may remember it for years.
- 12:26People never remember what you said or what
- 12:30you did, but they'll always remember how you
- 12:33made them feel.
- 12:34That's influence, guys.
- 12:36And leadership isn't only about being followed.
- 12:40Leadership is also about what happens to people
- 12:42because you were there.
- 12:44Did they become more confident?
- 12:46Did they learn something?
- 12:47Did you create an opportunity?
- 12:48Did they feel respected?
- 12:51Did your presence make the situation better?
- 12:54Make your progress useful to somebody besides yourself.
- 12:59That's completely different in a way that we're
- 13:05able to measure success.
- 13:08Instead of asking the question only, how far
- 13:13did I get?
- 13:15Common question.
- 13:17How about what became possible for somebody else
- 13:20because I got here?
- 13:23I love that question.
- 13:25What became possible for somebody else because I
- 13:29actually got here?
- 13:32That's a pretty remarkable thing that many people
- 13:36don't realize.
- 13:39But you can do it.
- 13:42Because now your success has multiplication power built
- 13:47right into it.
- 13:49Lead people better than you found them.
- 13:51If you use a facility, leave it better
- 13:54or cleaner than you found it.
- 13:56That doesn't mean fixing everyone.
- 13:59It means bringing something positive into your human
- 14:02interactions.
- 14:04Respect, knowledge, encouragement, opportunity, honesty, energy, and yes,
- 14:13let's not forget kindness.
- 14:15Kindness doesn't cost anything to be kind, but
- 14:19has such a great priceless impact.
- 14:22Sometimes, simply making another person feel seen can
- 14:26matter more than you realize.
- 14:29And build something you're proud of beyond the
- 14:31numbers.
- 14:32Numbers matter, revenue matters in business, growth matters,
- 14:37results matters, performance matters, but numbers cannot measure
- 14:42everything that matters.
- 14:44They don't completely measure trust.
- 14:47They don't measure the person you encouraged who
- 14:51was ready to quit.
- 14:54They don't measure the relationship you protected for
- 14:57years when it would have been easier to
- 14:59just walk away.
- 15:02They don't measure the knowledge you shared to
- 15:05help somebody succeed in life.
- 15:08They don't measure the example you set when
- 15:12nobody was watching.
- 15:14And remember, guys, our weekly theme is your
- 15:18actions are telling the truth about you, okay?
- 15:23That's important.
- 15:25You can say all day long that you
- 15:28care about people.
- 15:30Your actions tell us whether you really do.
- 15:36You can say relationships matter.
- 15:39Your calendar tells us whether they do.
- 15:42You can say you're grateful the way you
- 15:46treat people.
- 15:46Who helped you tells us whether you really
- 15:49are.
- 15:51You can parade up and down the streets
- 15:54and shout from the hills and say, I'm
- 15:57a leader.
- 15:58How people experience your leadership tells the real
- 16:03story.
- 16:05That's why today's message goes much deeper than
- 16:09success.
- 16:10It's about alignment.
- 16:12You go to a networking event.
- 16:14It's not about how many business cards you
- 16:17can get.
- 16:17It's about the quality and the relationships, right?
- 16:22I have a philosophy, community first, relationships second,
- 16:25and business third.
- 16:27If there is no community, how do you
- 16:32build relationships?
- 16:32If there's no relationships, how do you build
- 16:38business?
- 16:41So let's think about this for a moment.
- 16:43What are the steps to building, let's say,
- 16:47a building?
- 16:47What are the steps to building a building,
- 16:49right?
- 16:51There's a lot of steps, right?
- 16:53So if we want to break it down,
- 16:55first of all, we have to acquire the
- 16:57land.
- 16:58Then we have to pour a foundation.
- 17:02Then the foundation has to be inspected to
- 17:04ensure it meets the building codes.
- 17:06Then we have to frame and structure work,
- 17:09such as it could be metal, could be
- 17:11wood, what have you.
- 17:12Then after the framing, we have to install
- 17:14mechanical systems, set up plumbing, electrical, and HVAC.
- 17:19Then we have to do insulation and drywall.
- 17:21Then we have interior finishing.
- 17:23Then we have to complete, and then it's
- 17:25ready to be occupied.
- 17:27So the steps, land acquisition, right?
- 17:30Permits, site clearing, grading, leveling the site for
- 17:35foundation.
- 17:36Foundation, pouring and inspecting the foundation.
- 17:38Framing, constructing the building's frame.
- 17:40Mechanical system, installing the plumbing, electrical, HVAC.
- 17:43Insulation, add insulation for energy and efficiency.
- 17:47Install drywall for interior walls, right?
- 17:50Interior finishes, complete with flooring, cabinets, fixtures.
- 17:53Final inspections, ensure compliance with building codes.
- 17:56Final walkthrough, review the building before occupancy.
- 18:00And then the occupancy permit, obtain permission to
- 18:03occupy the building.
- 18:05So we can't start with a CO, right?
- 18:11We can't start with framing if we don't
- 18:14have a foundation.
- 18:16The same way in networking, we can't start
- 18:19with, hey, let's do business.
- 18:21And I don't even know who you are
- 18:22or what you stand for or what you're
- 18:24about.
- 18:25It's about alignment.
- 18:27Does the way you're pursuing success match the
- 18:32person you say you want to become?
- 18:34I don't know.
- 18:35I'm just asking.
- 18:37Because you see, the strongest success creates value
- 18:41that doesn't stop with you.
- 18:44People that are looking for them are selfish.
- 18:49I'm not saying you shouldn't take care of
- 18:51yourself.
- 18:51What I'm saying is we have to realize
- 18:54that sometimes we have to help the other
- 18:57person.
- 18:58And by sometimes, I mean more than just
- 19:00once, okay?
- 19:04I think that's an important thing, but a
- 19:06lot of people don't understand it, okay?
- 19:10Because like I said, the strongest success creates
- 19:13value that doesn't stop with just you, okay?
- 19:19It moves outward.
- 19:22It helps somebody.
- 19:25It teaches somebody.
- 19:28It encourages somebody.
- 19:30It supports somebody.
- 19:32It creates opportunities for somebody.
- 19:35It strengthens relationships.
- 19:38It improves something for somebody or somebodies.
- 19:42And yes, guys, keep chasing your goals.
- 19:48I don't want to tell you to give
- 19:49up because you shouldn't.
- 19:51But I also don't want to tell you
- 19:52that it's going to be 1, 2, 3
- 19:54as easy as pie, right?
- 19:57When I go to these networking events, and
- 19:59I choose them very selectively, when something doesn't
- 20:02work properly, what are you supposed to do?
- 20:06That's a big problem, a problem about how
- 20:11you're not aligned with people, right?
- 20:14I think that's a big challenge for a
- 20:16lot of people today because they don't understand
- 20:19these things.
- 20:20They don't understand the fact that we need
- 20:21to get to know somebody.
- 20:23The reason we want community, when we work
- 20:26on some community and we build community, people
- 20:30say, hey, you know, you're like me.
- 20:31And we start to build a little bit
- 20:32of a bond in kind of rubbing elbows
- 20:35with people that want to help the community.
- 20:37Then they probably want to start to get
- 20:39to know each other, relationship.
- 20:42And then only, only if there's a need,
- 20:47business may follow, either from them or recommending
- 20:50someone else because, you know, I trust you.
- 20:53I've been with you for a while.
- 20:54I know what you stand for.
- 20:56I didn't come off saying, hey, you know,
- 20:58I want to sell you this.
- 21:04That's not real.
- 21:06Ladies and gentlemen, I invite you to dream
- 21:08big.
- 21:10I invite you to, I don't want to
- 21:12just say work hard, work smartly hard.
- 21:14So I don't want you to kill yourself,
- 21:15but I want you to not be afraid
- 21:18to put effort in, but do it smartly.
- 21:20Build the company, write the book, which by
- 21:24the way, I just did and I'm working
- 21:26on another one.
- 21:27Um, earn the degree, working on my next
- 21:31one, take the stage.
- 21:34I do that all the time.
- 21:36Create the opportunity, make the money, reach higher,
- 21:43raise the bar higher.
- 21:46But when you arrive, don't look around and
- 21:49discover that you climb the entire mountain alone
- 21:54because you know what ladies and gentlemen, you
- 21:55treat everyone else like they were either competition
- 22:00or stepping stone.
- 22:02Bring people with you, share what you know,
- 22:07recognize who helped you give credit.
- 22:12Practice gratitude, protect meaningful relationships.
- 22:17You might say, John, why do I need
- 22:18to do this?
- 22:22When you exhibit karma, karma comes back to
- 22:27you.
- 22:28You know, there's a lot of people I
- 22:30coach and I talk about gratitude with, and
- 22:32they don't want to have gratitude.
- 22:35They think it's a waste of time.
- 22:49They think it's a waste of time.
- 22:54And I feel sorry for those people because
- 22:57maybe they got dealt some bad cards.
- 23:02Maybe people didn't help them, but that doesn't
- 23:04mean you shouldn't help other people.
- 23:08Okay.
- 23:10Protect those meaningful relationships.
- 23:13And use your success to create something that
- 23:17continues beyond yourself.
- 23:20Time for some more water.
- 23:21This water is good, by the way.
- 23:22Seven times filtered RO water with a fresh
- 23:24lemon.
- 23:31When you farm or you raise any type
- 23:35of vegetables or fruits, you don't plant and
- 23:39pick tomorrow.
- 23:40It takes time.
- 23:42So what do I mean by that, guys?
- 23:44What are the stages of, let's say, yielding,
- 23:51let's say, apples or fruit from planting?
- 23:57What are the stages?
- 23:59So there are a lot of stages, right?
- 24:02Planting and waiting.
- 24:06We have the season.
- 24:08So once established, the tree enters a recurring
- 24:10yearly cycle to yield fruit.
- 24:12Winter dormancy.
- 24:13The tree rests and requires a specific number
- 24:15of chilling hours.
- 24:16Cold temperature to trigger future bud development.
- 24:19Buds break in spring development, March and May.
- 24:22Buds swell and open into silver and green
- 24:24tips, eventually forming tight flower clusters.
- 24:28We're talking about flowers.
- 24:30We're talking about apples or what have you.
- 24:32Bloom and pollination, April and May.
- 24:36The first central flowers open up, followed by
- 24:38surrounding blossoms.
- 24:39Bees cross-pollinate the flowers using pollen from
- 24:42compatible nearby apple variety.
- 24:46Fruit sets in June drops.
- 24:48Late spring, fertilized flower drop their petals and
- 24:52begin forming tiny and developing fruitlets.
- 24:57Tree naturally sheds excess small fruits, June drops.
- 25:01And growers manually thin remaining clusters so individual
- 25:05fruits get enough nutrients.
- 25:07You don't pick them early.
- 25:07You also don't pick before they're ready.
- 25:10Summer growth, fruits swell, expand in size, and
- 25:13develop their characteristical green, yellow, or red skin
- 25:16color.
- 25:18Autumn ripening and harvest.
- 25:20Late summer, fall, sugars concentrate inside the fruit.
- 25:23As it reaches full maturity, apples are hand
- 25:26-picked when they reach optimum firmness, color, and
- 25:30ease of separation from the branch.
- 25:34A lot of work, right?
- 25:36A lot, a lot of work.
- 25:41Because achievement can tell you, ladies and gentlemen,
- 25:43what you accomplished.
- 25:45Use success to create something that continues beyond
- 25:48you.
- 25:49Fulfillment tells you why it matters so much.
- 25:56But people that want to go pick fruit
- 25:58right away, that's a problem, guys.
- 26:01It's a huge problem.
- 26:05There are times.
- 26:10Things have cycles.
- 26:14And sometimes we have to wait for those
- 26:16cycles.
- 26:17Other times, it's a matter of us being
- 26:20ready to act, right?
- 26:23You hear life is about a numbers game,
- 26:25right?
- 26:26Numbers game.
- 26:27But I've found that even though it's a
- 26:29numbers game, if you're kind to people, they
- 26:32remember you.
- 26:34Practice gratitude every single day.
- 26:38Ladies and gentlemen, I am John C.

- 27:13Make sure they're telling a story you're proud
- 27:17to share, to live, and be part of.
- 27:22Too many times people say to me, oh,
- 27:24John, I don't like my life story.
- 27:26Change it, right?
- 27:30A wise person once said to me, John,
- 27:31if you're not part of the solution, you
- 27:35know the end.
- 27:36You are part of the problem.
- 27:39Ladies and gentlemen, I hope you enjoy this
