- 0:14Hello and welcome back to Just Be True, a soul
- 0:18-led podcast. And this podcast was born from
- 0:21a deep desire to live authentically, to strip
- 0:24away the masks, the expectations, the old stories,
- 0:28and remember who we truly are. In each episode,
- 0:32we explore what it means to live in harmony with
- 0:35your soul's truth through real conversations,
- 0:39intuitive guidance, and powerful moments of reflection.
- 0:44And so today, we are here to talk about the understanding,
- 0:48the quiet internal shifts after survival mode.
- 0:55So there's a season that doesn't get talked about
- 0:58enough. It's the season where nothing is falling
- 1:03apart, nothing dramatic is happening, there's
- 1:07no crisis to solve, and yet something inside
- 1:12of you feels very different. You look around
- 1:16and you think everything's fine. So why do I
- 1:19feel so unsettled? If that's where you are right
- 1:23now or something that you have been recently
- 1:26experienced and even if you found yourself in
- 1:29a whirlwind of change, this episode is definitely
- 1:32for you. Today we are going to talk about what
- 1:36happens after survival mode. The quiet internal
- 1:40shift That comes when the urgency fades But the
- 1:46identity you built during that urgency still
- 1:50hasn't quite caught up with you Survival mode
- 1:55is sneaky. I'm sorry. Sometimes it looks like
- 2:00chaos Sometimes it looks like high performance.
- 2:05Sometimes it looks like being the strong one,
- 2:08the capable one, the one who handles everything.
- 2:14You know, when you're in survival mode, that's
- 2:16what you do. You do all of those things, right?
- 2:19You deal with the chaos, the high performance,
- 2:22being the strong one, the capable one, the one
- 2:24that makes everything happen. And in survival
- 2:27mode, you move because you have to. Your nervous
- 2:33system is activated. Your focus is sharp. You
- 2:37are solving you're fixing managing holding and
- 2:42often You don't even realize it until you're
- 2:46in the middle of it you know or until you're
- 2:50done with it like like the Survival mode is done
- 2:55and over with and that's when you realize how
- 2:58tight and wound up you've been right and because
- 3:01survival mode can last for months years sometimes
- 3:05decades and then one day it softens here's the
- 3:14part no one is prepared for is when that crisis
- 3:18ends when the financial stress stabilizes when
- 3:23the relationship tension shifts when the job
- 3:27transition settles Your body doesn't immediately
- 3:32relax It doesn't trust calm right away because
- 3:36calm feels very unfamiliar Right. You've been
- 3:42running on purpose on responsibility on urgency
- 3:47and now Now there's a space and space can feel
- 3:55disorienting you might notice your motivation
- 4:00dips, the feel of emotional for no clear reason.
- 4:08Right? You may question yourself even more. You
- 4:11may question your decisions or you may even question
- 4:13your emotions or how you're feeling about something.
- 4:16You may feel restless even when nothing is wrong.
- 4:23And your mind might say, why am I like this?
- 4:27I should be better by now. The stress is over.
- 4:32We got that maintained. You know, that is done
- 4:36and over with. Right? What you're going through
- 4:41isn't regression. It's an integration. Integration
- 4:46is what happens when your body finally feels
- 4:50safe enough to stop performing strength. It's
- 4:55the exhale you've postponed for years. It's the
- 4:59tears that didn't have time to fall. And it's
- 5:03the nervous system asking, can we rest now? And
- 5:10sometimes rest feels terrifying when you've known
- 5:16it all along. When the only thing that you can
- 5:19remember for the past months and decades and
- 5:23years is is motion, stress, overwhelminess, and
- 5:28overdoing, that rest can feel very terrifying.
- 5:39So integration is what happens when your body
- 5:42and your nervous system finally has a space to
- 5:46process what your mind pushed through. When you
- 5:51are surviving, You didn't have the luxury of
- 5:55feeling everything. You had to move, you had
- 5:59to make decisions, you had to handle it, you
- 6:02had to stay upright, keeping things going and
- 6:05keeping you in motion. And now that that urgency
- 6:08is softened, like that urgency is no longer there,
- 6:12your body is saying, okay, now can we process?
- 6:19And processing? doesn't always look productive.
- 6:25It can look like sudden waves of emotion, fatigue
- 6:32that you can't explain, questioning decisions
- 6:36that you've already made, and craving stillness
- 6:41but also feeling uncomfortable in it. Many of
- 6:49us have had moments where we had stillness or
- 6:52downtime and felt out of sorts, in strange territory,
- 6:57and unable to appreciate the moments of stillness
- 7:01to relax, to truly allow the body to release
- 7:06the tension that it's been holding onto. Integration
- 7:10in your system reorganizes itself through safety
- 7:14instead of pressure. Imagine that. Is your identity
- 7:22loosening the grip of who you had to be so you
- 7:27can discover who you are without bracing? And
- 7:34that can feel messy and unstable because the
- 7:40old drive, the one that fueled by adrenaline
- 7:43are proving is starting to dissolve. And the
- 7:49new drive, the one rooted in alignment and calm,
- 7:53hasn't fully formed yet. So you sit in this strange
- 7:58in -between space, less reactive, less urgent,
- 8:03but not fully clear. And that space, that space
- 8:08is sacred. It's where the nervous system learns
- 8:13to pace. And that peace is not a threat. It's
- 8:20where your energy has the time to recalibrate.
- 8:26And it's where your next vision of yourself begins
- 8:32to take shape quietly without forcing it. And
- 8:36it's okay to take time here to breathe in with
- 8:41that calm. So here's what's really happening.
- 8:48The version of you that knew how to survive is
- 8:51gently stepping back. And that identity can be
- 8:55hard to release. Maybe you were the fixer, the
- 9:00provider, the strong one, the overachiever, the
- 9:04one who never falls apart. Who are you when you
- 9:12are not needed in the same way? Who are you when
- 9:20you are not proving your resiliency? And who
- 9:30are you when strength isn't required, only presence?
- 9:39These questions can feel very destabilizing.
- 9:44And it's also where freedom lives. that version
- 9:50of you that was so powerful, but she was built
- 9:55for a specific season, right? And now something
- 10:00softer is emerging, something that doesn't operate
- 10:05from urgency, something that doesn't need to
- 10:09be proven, something that doesn't thrive on pressure,
- 10:14and that can feel like losing yourself. But it
- 10:18isn't. It's a becoming. Becoming who you are
- 10:24meant to be. Calm, collective, mindful, and relaxed
- 10:31in life. You were never created to be in survival
- 10:37mode and on high alert. So I completely understand
- 10:44being in that survival mode. I lived it for decades
- 10:48and way, way too long. I am actually still in
- 10:54the process of regulating to this new version
- 10:58of who I am. And even though this process can
- 11:02be emotional at times, and believe me, it is,
- 11:07I am enjoying the new version of me that is arising.
- 11:11And I am enjoying observing this process. So
- 11:18some of you may know, I worked for the federal
- 11:21government for 22 years until I was laid off
- 11:24last April. And when I left my 22 -year career,
- 11:29I was actually relieved. I felt the best I had
- 11:33felt in a long time. I walked out of there in
- 11:37an amazing mood. I was happy. I was... Felt uplifted
- 11:44I had co -workers calling me crying and I was
- 11:47like on top of the world and they just couldn't
- 11:49talk to me Because I wasn't in that sad I Wasn't
- 11:57in that space Right, I actually felt relieved
- 12:01I know that That layoff was the was a blessing
- 12:08and something in my soul had been yearning for.
- 12:14But the aftermath of that, the allowing myself
- 12:17to pause, to slow down, and the recalibration,
- 12:23that part has been the challenge. I was used
- 12:27to being on all the time. I was a leader, I was
- 12:31a supervisor, I was a decision maker in my career.
- 12:35I oversaw staff, contracts, grants, organizational
- 12:39budgets. It was a tremendous amount of responsibility
- 12:43and it was an atmosphere in which I thrived in.
- 12:50I was a go -getter and I loved being in the know
- 12:53and the go -to person that everyone could depend
- 12:56on. I loved that and I thrived in that space.
- 13:02I was trained to think quickly. to respond immediately,
- 13:07to anticipate problems before they even surfaced,
- 13:11my body was conditioned to stay alert. And then,
- 13:15and then it was all gone. No staff meetings,
- 13:23no crisis emails, no decisions waiting for me
- 13:28to take care of, and my nervous system did not
- 13:32know what to do with that. and still, and still
- 13:39doesn't sometimes. You know, and there is no
- 13:43timeframe of how quickly we should regulate from
- 13:47being in that survival mode, being in that state
- 13:51of relaxation and being. There's no timeline.
- 13:57There are moments when I catch myself expecting
- 14:01to be on. You know, scanning for the urgencies,
- 14:05waiting for something to require me to be in
- 14:09that on mood the same way. But there is no on.
- 14:14Not anymore. Now, you may be saying, Summer,
- 14:23come on, look. Look at everything you're doing.
- 14:26You have a business, you have a podcast, you
- 14:28do blogs, you do classes. You're constantly creating.
- 14:32And you're absolutely right. But there's a difference.
- 14:39Before I was operating on responsibility, on
- 14:43the having to, the requirement to, the expectation
- 14:47of. But now I operate from resonance. I operate
- 14:55from what feels right. Before I was operating
- 14:58on responsibility, pure responsibility. before
- 15:03my energy was outward and driven, now it's aligned
- 15:07and flowing. I don't feel overwhelmed. I don't
- 15:11feel pressured. This all feels very easy and
- 15:18very welcoming. What I'm building now often feels
- 15:27different in my body. It doesn't feel like bracing.
- 15:32It doesn't feel like proving. It doesn't feel
- 15:36like I'm carrying any weight. Today, what I'm
- 15:43doing feels like expression, very fulfillment,
- 15:50and stepping out and doing things new. It feels
- 15:55like I'm moving because I want to. Not because
- 15:59I have to. And that shift from pressure to purpose
- 16:04takes recalibration. And it takes time. So when
- 16:09my system flares up, and believe me it does,
- 16:12when anxiety shows up without a reason, I don't
- 16:15shame it. I pause. I breathe through it. Deep
- 16:23breaths. Deep belly breaths. Slow, integrated
- 16:27breathing. And I remind myself, I am safe in
- 16:34this new space. I connect with that anxiety,
- 16:40that overwhelming feeling, and I ask, where is
- 16:44it coming from? And I listen. Realizing that
- 16:50this is not collapse, but understanding that
- 16:53this is expansion without force. And I am still
- 16:59learning how to live in this space. And I don't
- 17:04strive for perfection, accolades, or rewards.
- 17:08I strive for fulfillment and doing what I am
- 17:13called to do and doing what feels right for my
- 17:17soul. You know and I give you permission to do
- 17:26the exact same thing. So you know there can also
- 17:35be grief in this space. Grief from the adrenaline,
- 17:40grief from the version of you who held everything
- 17:43together, grief from the identity that gave you
- 17:47structure. Even if you don't want that life back
- 17:54even if you're very grateful that it's over and
- 17:57you can't even imagine going back There's still
- 18:01a letting go that has to take place and that
- 18:05letting go can feel like Floating in between
- 18:08those two worlds You know not who you were Not
- 18:14who you're fully becoming. You're just kind of
- 18:17in the middle And that middle space again is
- 18:20very sacred. Even if it feels uncomfortable,
- 18:25it's very sacred. And it's where you're adjusting
- 18:29and learning and becoming the new version of
- 18:33you. And allowing that grief to flow is so important.
- 18:40Don't ignore it. Don't shame it. Be with it and
- 18:45allow it. When we live in survival mode long
- 18:49enough, our nervous system begins to equate safety
- 18:54with alertness. Your system learned that being
- 18:59kept alert kept you safe. Being needed kept you
- 19:04valued. Being productive kept you secure. So
- 19:10when things get quiet, your body can begin to
- 19:14whisper, are we missing something? Is something
- 19:18about to go wrong? Like we're waiting for that
- 19:22next shoe to drop. So when things come down and
- 19:28the body can interpret that as unfamiliarity
- 19:32and that unfamiliar can feel very unsafe. This
- 19:39is why you might create problems in your mind.
- 19:42You might feel anxious when things are quiet.
- 19:45You might want to look for something to fix.
- 19:50Your body is recalibrating. This is not weakness.
- 19:54This is not failure. This is rewriting. And this
- 19:59phase requires gentleness. So please give yourself
- 20:04grace as you're moving through this change. So
- 20:11instead of forcing clarity, instead of demanding
- 20:15motivation, Instead of trying to figure out what's
- 20:19next, what if you allow this to be a transition,
- 20:25a repattering, a resting? What if nothing's wrong?
- 20:33Imagine that. What if your system is simply learning
- 20:37how to exist without bracing? Oh, that feels
- 20:42like a breath of fresh air. There is strength
- 20:46in the selfness. There is power in not pushing
- 20:51and there is wisdom in letting your next self
- 20:57arrive slowly. No need to rush. Be in that flow
- 21:04of allowance and acceptance and get comfortable
- 21:10with the stillness and with the quiet. This is
- 21:18often the space where people come to me, not
- 21:21because something's broken, but because something
- 21:24is shifting. The urgency is gone, but the identity
- 21:29hasn't quite caught up. And in energy work and
- 21:33sound baths and nervous system support, through
- 21:37counseling and through Reiki and through, you
- 21:40know, my spiritual life coaching. What we're
- 21:46really doing is helping the body feel safe enough
- 21:49to soften We're not fixing or stabilizing we're
- 21:55allowing that integration and Sometimes that's
- 21:59the most important work here So I say find you
- 22:03someone that you can work with someone that you
- 22:06trust someone that resonates with you And allow
- 22:12your body your nervous system to go through this
- 22:17transition of healing and stabilizing so if you're
- 22:29listening right now notice your shoulders notice
- 22:34your jaw notice if you're subtly bracing Are
- 22:43you holding tension in these areas? Now take
- 22:49a slow deep breath in. Long exhale out. Let your
- 23:07body practice being safe for 10 seconds. Listen,
- 23:2010 seconds. And if you're in a season where nothing
- 23:25is falling apart, but you feel different, uncertain,
- 23:30quieter, more emotional, or even less driven
- 23:34than before, it's okay. Allow yourself to pause.
- 23:44Place one hand on your heart. two if you need
- 23:48to and remind yourself this is not a breakdown
- 23:55this is recalibration you survived and now you're
- 24:10learning to live without bracing and that may
- 24:15be the bravest work you've ever done. It takes
- 24:20time and it is perfectly okay and you are allowed.
- 24:33So if this episode resonated with you I invite
- 24:37you to sit with it gently this week and if you
- 24:41need support during your integration season You
- 24:45can find my sessions and offering on my website,
- 24:50just -be -true .com. I encourage you to find
- 24:57someone to work with, someone that you feel safe
- 25:01with, someone that you're comfortable with. It
- 25:03doesn't have to be me, but it needs to be someone.
- 25:07Even if it's a friend just to help you work through
- 25:09it. It's perfectly fine. So we're still in season
- 25:14one. Next episode is episode three, Grief. When
