- 0:01Speaker 1: Here we go.
- 0:10Speaker 2: All right, we are about to chat to a guy.
- 0:13Speaker 2: His name is Dan. He lived in Country Victoria and
- 0:17Speaker 2: when he was twenty nine years old, he stumbled across
- 0:20Speaker 2: a bit of a technical fault with the NAB Bank.
- 0:25Speaker 2: Basically what it was is when the ATM system every
- 0:28Speaker 2: night went into network maintenance, it was kind of like
- 0:32Speaker 2: offline and couldn't really see what he was doing, and
- 0:35Speaker 2: he found if he went at that time, there was
- 0:38Speaker 2: a glitch where he could just transfer money into his
- 0:41Speaker 2: account unlimited keeper coming and he didn't have the money,
- 0:45Speaker 2: the bank didn't know, and he just kept pulling it
- 0:48Speaker 2: off and he lived quite the extravagant lifestyle for a
- 0:52Speaker 2: while until the guilt started to get to him. Yep,
- 0:57Speaker 2: and he dubbed himself in and dabbed himself in.
- 1:00Speaker 3: Yeah, he literally handed himself in. I mean, I can
- 1:04Speaker 3: safely say majority of the population wouldn't. Surely No.
- 1:09Speaker 4: They even made a movie ATM Boy back in twenty
- 1:12Speaker 4: twenty four. The story's resurfaced. I think on the TV.
- 1:15Speaker 4: They've been covering it again lately. On SBS. They did
- 1:18Speaker 4: a big special, so we thought we'd get him on Dan, Hello,
- 1:23Speaker 4: good morning.
- 1:23Speaker 1: I did they did good morning, guys, are going it
- 1:28Speaker 1: seems like I said back in time when.
- 1:31Speaker 2: Hash by the way he went to jail for it too.
- 1:36Speaker 3: Well, this is one of the questions that I want
- 1:38Speaker 3: to ask you, Dan, because I actually feel like the
- 1:40Speaker 3: fact that you came forward and confessed to what you
- 1:45Speaker 3: were doing, not only were you basically eliminating any other
- 1:48Speaker 3: risk to NAB bank, So they should not only be
- 1:52Speaker 3: thanking you. I can't believe they threw you in jail
- 1:54Speaker 3: for a year and then find you a quarter of
- 1:57Speaker 3: a million dollars like that feels very unfair when you've
- 2:00Speaker 3: done I mean, you did the wrong thing for a
- 2:02Speaker 3: little bit, but you ultimately did the right thing in
- 2:05Speaker 3: the end.
- 2:06Speaker 1: Yeah, it's a massive miscarriage of justice, and I'm just
- 2:10Speaker 1: working towards having all the rights wrong from that, you know,
- 2:14Speaker 1: Like I didn't deserve to go jail, now, I completely deserved.
- 2:18Speaker 1: It was one of those things. It's like, you know,
- 2:22Speaker 1: for me, the story is about temptation and what you
- 2:24Speaker 1: do when no one's looking right. I mean, that's the
- 2:26Speaker 1: story to me, you know, and it's different to so
- 2:29Speaker 1: many people. You know, Like the other night, I was
- 2:31Speaker 1: on Insight and I'm just sort of we sat there
- 2:34Speaker 1: for three hours doing this thing, and then I'm watching
- 2:36Speaker 1: the edit and I'm like, oh, it's not really you know,
- 2:39Speaker 1: it's not really that Like I wasn't you know, sort
- 2:42Speaker 1: of you know, trying to gloat the whole time, like
- 2:44Speaker 1: you know Reggie Reggie Bird Brother who won Big Brother twice. Yeah,
- 2:50Speaker 1: so she's talking about everything that's happened to her and
- 2:53Speaker 1: all the leeches that tried to attach themselves to her,
- 2:56Speaker 1: and she won money and all that kind of stuff.
- 2:58Speaker 1: But all that stuff doesn't make it in right, Ah,
- 3:00Speaker 1: she had an incredible story, like the fact that, you know,
- 3:05Speaker 1: people won't publish her story, her book, like she's got
- 3:08Speaker 1: massive followers, like Australian publishers, do yourself favor and publish
- 3:12Speaker 1: that book because she's like she loved, you know, like
- 3:15Speaker 1: she was she spent so much joy to people, you know,
- 3:17Speaker 1: like it was but it was interesting, you know, like
- 3:19Speaker 1: so certain aspects get cut off, you know. So then
- 3:22Speaker 1: I'm sort of sitting there talking about how I bought
- 3:24Speaker 1: a horse and a car and all this stuff, and
- 3:26Speaker 1: then it cuts to this lady who was just trying
- 3:28Speaker 1: to get a loan for two grand.
- 3:30Speaker 4: Right, so was Yeah, the special was on other people
- 3:32Speaker 4: as well. Back to you, though, this is what we
- 3:34Speaker 4: want to know. When you discovered the glitch how to
- 3:38Speaker 4: begin with, and you were actually putting the money into
- 3:41Speaker 4: your account, You weren't withdrawing money. Was there any guilt
- 3:44Speaker 4: when you did it to begin with?
- 3:47Speaker 1: So it was like it was like a magic show. Really,
- 3:49Speaker 1: So I start transferring money between my accounts and the
- 3:53Speaker 1: transactions are honoring. I'm not really sure why they're honoring,
- 3:57Speaker 1: but then the money's staying there. So I'm doing transfer.
- 4:00Speaker 1: Anyone knows you can go to an ATM and do
- 4:02Speaker 1: a transfer between your accounts, So that's what I was doing,
- 4:05Speaker 1: and so that was creating the money. So I worked
- 4:07Speaker 1: out between long story shot, between twelve am and one am,
- 4:12Speaker 1: I could transfer as much money as I wanted from
- 4:14Speaker 1: my credit card to my savings account and that money
- 4:17Speaker 1: would stick there for a whole day. Right, So, but
- 4:20Speaker 1: I could transfer up to six figures, So I could
- 4:24Speaker 1: transfer up to nine hundred and ninety nine thousand dollars
- 4:26Speaker 1: at a time. Well, but then you could just do
- 4:29Speaker 1: it three times. Yeah, but then you could just do
- 4:31Speaker 1: it three times, right, So if you did it three times,
- 4:33Speaker 1: nine hundred thousand, I'd had two point seven million dollars
- 4:36Speaker 1: in there. And then during the day I could go
- 4:38Speaker 1: into the bank and say how much money I've I
- 4:40Speaker 1: got in the bank and she'd say, or he'd say
- 4:43Speaker 1: two point seven million dollars, how much would you like?
- 4:46Speaker 1: And so it was sort of back in the day
- 4:48Speaker 1: where you could go out, you know, you could get
- 4:50Speaker 1: one hundred thousand out of the bank, you could get
- 4:52Speaker 1: fifty thousand. You can't really do that anymore, but it
- 4:55Speaker 1: was more like there wasn't time to think about what
- 4:57Speaker 1: I was doing. It was just amazing, and I was
- 5:00Speaker 1: what can we do? And then you know, sort of
- 5:03Speaker 1: each each day just grew and grew and grew, and
- 5:05Speaker 1: I got more and more trouble and I knew that
- 5:07Speaker 1: I was doing the wrong thing, but it was just
- 5:08Speaker 1: so it was just so awesome to be able to,
- 5:10Speaker 1: you know, shout your family and friends and you know,
- 5:13Speaker 1: live a life like I was living like, you know,
- 5:15Speaker 1: I'm ASoft four. I was living like Christiana Roneldo four months,
- 5:20Speaker 1: you know what I mean.
- 5:20Speaker 3: He would have felt like you were in some kind
- 5:22Speaker 3: of magical movie.
- 5:24Speaker 4: Did you tell I'm like, did you have a cover story?
- 5:26Speaker 4: Because obviously like, why have you got all this money
- 5:29Speaker 4: all of a sudden? How did you explain it to
- 5:30Speaker 4: your friends and family?
- 5:32Speaker 1: Well, exactly, I just said, like, you know, I said,
- 5:34Speaker 1: I've got a big quaddy or I got like a
- 5:35Speaker 1: big multi or something, you know, because I was just
- 5:38Speaker 1: like there was no other way to explain it. You know.
- 5:40Speaker 1: I used to tell people I was a poker player
- 5:42Speaker 1: or you know, in investments or whatever. And I remember
- 5:46Speaker 1: leaving the bar, you know, because I had to do
- 5:47Speaker 1: the transfers every night at twelve, and so I'd leave
- 5:50Speaker 1: the bar where I was at and walk to it
- 5:53Speaker 1: and nob atm and I used to tell people that
- 5:56Speaker 1: I'm just going to go, you know, check the prices
- 5:58Speaker 1: in Hong Kong, you know, because I'm I'm a banker
- 6:00Speaker 1: or yeah, you know what I mean, Yeah exactly, and
- 6:03Speaker 1: they just and no one really cares anyway, right, you
- 6:06Speaker 1: know what I mean, Like you got the money, no
- 6:08Speaker 1: one really cares what you do. They sort to ask you,
- 6:10Speaker 1: but it's just kind of lift service.
- 6:11Speaker 3: Yeah, what is What's What's one of the most ridiculous
- 6:15Speaker 3: things that you spent money on?
- 6:17Speaker 1: It was all pretty ridiculous, probably probably red Gucci shoes
- 6:22Speaker 1: because I have kind of like we've got to custom
- 6:25Speaker 1: made and they were like size thirteen or something. It
- 6:28Speaker 1: was ridiculous.
- 6:29Speaker 3: They didn't make you obviously pay the one point six
- 6:32Speaker 3: million dollars back, right.
- 6:34Speaker 1: Well, I mean you can't get blood out of the stone, right,
- 6:36Speaker 1: you know what I mean? Like, have you still got
- 6:39Speaker 1: the red shoes? Six million dollars? If I had one
- 6:42Speaker 1: point six million dollars right now, I probably wouldn't give
- 6:45Speaker 1: it to that bank. Yeah?
- 6:46Speaker 4: Yeah, right, But did you have to declare bankruptcy or
- 6:48Speaker 4: how did you get out of it?
- 6:49Speaker 1: I did? I did, Yeah I did.
- 6:51Speaker 4: Hey, let's before we let you go, mate, let's talk
- 6:53Speaker 4: about the moment where you decided to dub yourself in them, Like,
- 6:57Speaker 4: you know you're doing this, You're buying your red Gucci shoes.
- 7:00Speaker 1: All of that.
- 7:00Speaker 4: At what point did you go, this is enough, I
- 7:03Speaker 4: need to dob myself in.
- 7:06Speaker 1: Well you can imagine it. Rather so it's all fun
- 7:08Speaker 1: and games for a while, right, but then ultimately every
- 7:12Speaker 1: transaction you feel like you're adding to your prison sentence
- 7:15Speaker 1: and also a loss who I was. I didn't even
- 7:17Speaker 1: know who I was. I was just like random dude
- 7:20Speaker 1: that I didn't even know. Just you know, trying to
- 7:22Speaker 1: do transfers every night, keep the ball in the air,
- 7:25Speaker 1: you know, and people would say that, you know, I
- 7:27Speaker 1: sort of dropped the ball, but I kept the ball
- 7:29Speaker 1: in the air as long as I could. You know,
- 7:31Speaker 1: I felt like I was going to die.
- 7:32Speaker 2: So yeah, because I mean, yeah, it's funny that because
- 7:35Speaker 2: you're not working for you for anything, Like there's no
- 7:38Speaker 2: satisfaction really in life, is there. Yeah, it seems like
- 7:43Speaker 2: we all would do it, but maybe we wouldn't.
- 7:45Speaker 1: Yeah, I don't.
- 7:46Speaker 4: I was that like a really really guilty feeling.
- 7:50Speaker 1: I think it's situational, right, So if you're studying to
- 7:53Speaker 1: be a doctor, and you know you're doing all these things,
- 7:56Speaker 1: you're not up at midnight, you know, check that he
- 8:00Speaker 1: can transfer money between your accounts on an ATM, you
- 8:02Speaker 1: know what I mean. So it's kind of like, yeah, circumstance,
- 8:05Speaker 1: like if I had kids at home, you know, I
- 8:07Speaker 1: definitely wouldn't have done it, But it was just you know,
- 8:09Speaker 1: it's just sort of.
- 8:11Speaker 4: Hey, in your opinion, does money buy happiness? Then you've
- 8:14Speaker 4: had access to all these free money for not working.
- 8:16Speaker 4: Did it make you happy?
- 8:19Speaker 1: Look, it doesn't make you happy, but it definitely helps
- 8:21Speaker 1: I mean, you know, if you can you can earn
- 8:24Speaker 1: it in a just and kind of integracy way, then
- 8:28Speaker 1: absolutely all right.
- 8:29Speaker 4: Well good on your mate, Dan So always known as
- 8:32Speaker 4: ATM Man. Thanks for coming on the show.
- 8:34Speaker 3: Okay, nice to check you guys.
- 8:36Speaker 1: Nice talk to you.
