- 0:26Speaker 2: probably presented by Attorney Frank Walker, Real Talk, Real experience,
- 0:30Speaker 2: Real results, Frank Walker Law dot Com. Let that conversation
- 0:34Speaker 2: begin on Let's Talk.
- 0:36Speaker 3: This is curly with Let's Talk, and I have in
- 0:40Speaker 3: the building my two co hosts, Lisa Onde Hello, and
- 0:45Speaker 3: Hollis Lewis Hello.
- 0:46Speaker 4: Hello.
- 0:47Speaker 3: So guys, there's been there's.
- 0:50Speaker 5: Been, and lady, I take that anymore.
- 0:55Speaker 3: So there's been some crazy some some some crazy stuff
- 1:00Speaker 3: taking place in sports here in the last couple of
- 1:08Speaker 3: weeks or so.
- 1:10Speaker 5: And some are unfortunate, and some are and.
- 1:12Speaker 3: Some are some are really really really personally for me,
- 1:15Speaker 3: really really like a a difficult situation as as a whole.
- 1:21Speaker 3: So well, well we'll slow down and wait and get
- 1:25Speaker 3: that towards the end. But I can remember, I can
- 1:31Speaker 3: go back. I don't know, it seems like it was
- 1:32Speaker 3: just yesterday. And I can remember Tiger Woods like.
- 1:36Speaker 4: Being the name.
- 1:37Speaker 3: I'm out on the golf course, trying to trying to
- 1:40Speaker 3: be you know, a version of him. Guys, what what
- 1:46Speaker 3: what's going on? Like like what I'll give.
- 1:49Speaker 5: Some I'll give some background. Is that for the audience.
- 1:52Speaker 6: I think I think most people know what what happened
- 1:54Speaker 6: this past Friday, but but we'll make sure the audience
- 1:58Speaker 6: is aware. So talk Woods was once again involved in
- 2:02Speaker 6: a rollover car crash on Friday, March twenty seventh at Jupiter, Florida,
- 2:07Speaker 6: or in Jupiter, Florida, where he lives. He was he
- 2:09Speaker 6: was very close to his home when they found him.
- 2:12Speaker 6: He was alert, he was he was uninjured. So you know,
- 2:17Speaker 6: of course they ran him through the tests of a
- 2:19Speaker 6: d U I. They gave him a breathalyzer and no
- 2:22Speaker 6: alcohol was detected, and he refused a urine test. So
- 2:28Speaker 6: under the Florida law, I guess for driving under the influence,
- 2:33Speaker 6: he has been charged officially with a d UI.
- 2:37Speaker 7: So I'll just when you refuse some sort of breathalyzer
- 2:42Speaker 7: d UI sort of tests, then you can be charged,
- 2:45Speaker 7: even though there's not necessarily quote unquote.
- 2:47Speaker 6: Evidence right right, right right, and it just the timing
- 2:53Speaker 6: of it's very unfortunate for Tiger. He had just played
- 2:58Speaker 6: in something called the TGL Finals on the twenty fourth
- 3:02Speaker 6: of Mars, just a few days before, and if people
- 3:05Speaker 6: aren't you aware of what that is, it is an
- 3:09Speaker 6: indoor stadium golf league. And so he was a part
- 3:13Speaker 6: of that and that was his first professional appearance since
- 3:16Speaker 6: twenty twenty four. So it seemed like he was, you know,
- 3:20Speaker 6: kind of turning things around. You know, he had spoken
- 3:24Speaker 6: to the media recently and stated, you know, he wanted
- 3:28Speaker 6: to play in the Masters, the upcoming Masters in April.
- 3:32Speaker 6: You know, guys, what is your like, what is your
- 3:37Speaker 6: opinion of what's going on with Tiger right now?
- 3:40Speaker 7: Well, I mean again, I just wanted just to clarify
- 3:43Speaker 7: there is no again. The dui is alleged right now,
- 3:46Speaker 7: right right, right right. We just explained the situation as
- 3:48Speaker 7: far as him being the reason why he was probably
- 3:51Speaker 7: charged even though he passed the breathalyzer. But this is
- 3:55Speaker 7: just who he is, just who he is. Yeah, we
- 3:58Speaker 7: we had it, We had image of him and when
- 4:01Speaker 7: he was young, he had his father there, he was focused,
- 4:04Speaker 7: he was down in he was trying to get to
- 4:05Speaker 7: the mountaintop. He got to the mountaintop, and it's just
- 4:08Speaker 7: who he is. I mean, he he is a guy.
- 4:10Speaker 7: He's he's he's more like Chuck Dailey than what we
- 4:13Speaker 7: thought you think. So apparently he's a quieter, maybe a
- 4:18Speaker 7: more reserved version of that, but he seems to be
- 4:21Speaker 7: that similar guy. I mean, he likes to apparently apparent
- 4:24Speaker 7: allegedly likes to party, drink, likes to have the ladies.
- 4:28Speaker 3: You know, thiss just who he is. And that's okay, okay,
- 4:31Speaker 3: other than I'm gonna I'm going to I'm gonna say
- 4:35Speaker 3: that I agree with you in some respect, but I'm
- 4:42Speaker 3: gonna challenge, challenged the change. I have seen a number
- 4:52Speaker 3: of and and you all when I say this, you
- 4:54Speaker 3: all are gonna agree with me. I have seen a
- 4:57Speaker 3: number of amazing, top level, top two three in their
- 5:04Speaker 3: in their sport just lose their mind and do stupid stuff.
- 5:11Speaker 5: Okay, I think.
- 5:14Speaker 3: That this is this is this is in part because
- 5:18Speaker 3: of the of his greatness and and believing that you
- 5:23Speaker 3: are bigger than anything. There's no there's no way to
- 5:27Speaker 3: touch you. There's no way to touch you. You you
- 5:30Speaker 3: can do these things now. Well, his wife allegedly touched
- 5:33Speaker 3: him up a couple of times, allegedly and and even
- 5:40Speaker 3: though once you get caught, blamed, argue with the with
- 5:46Speaker 3: your wife, and you do your time, and the threat
- 5:50Speaker 3: that they're like, don't do this again, or we'll do this.
- 5:55Speaker 3: You can't. You don't buy that, Like, I just don't think.
- 5:58Speaker 3: I just don't. I don't think that. I don't think
- 6:01Speaker 3: that you could ever believe that anybody can touch you.
- 6:04Speaker 3: When you were at the I mean you're at the
- 6:06Speaker 3: top of the world, like everything is below you.
- 6:10Speaker 5: Did you ever feel that way?
- 6:11Speaker 4: When I.
- 6:13Speaker 3: Never was that player? Now?
- 6:14Speaker 4: Did I get me?
- 6:15Speaker 5: When you were going to the Pro Bowl? You were
- 6:17Speaker 5: to a degree? I mean you're not. I mean Tiger
- 6:20Speaker 5: Woods is an entity of his own.
- 6:21Speaker 3: I mean, and again, golf is a singular thing because
- 6:26Speaker 3: even at the Pro Bowl there's somebody that you know,
- 6:30Speaker 3: the guy my The other guy on the other side
- 6:33Speaker 3: of me was Darryl Green. So I am I looking
- 6:36Speaker 3: at Darryl Green and saying, man, who is he? Why
- 6:39Speaker 3: they even put him in? I can't do that, right,
- 6:42Speaker 3: you know, there's other guys that are in there that
- 6:44Speaker 3: are that. I honestly, if I can be honest with myself,
- 6:48Speaker 3: I can look at and say now I'm not there.
- 6:51Speaker 7: Well, I would just I would love to get dryl
- 6:54Speaker 7: green on, so if you can make that. But but
- 6:57Speaker 7: but I'm saying I just don't think so. I think
- 7:00Speaker 7: this is just who he is. I think that we
- 7:02Speaker 7: had an image of what we thought he was, and
- 7:05Speaker 7: this is just who he is. He's and I think, like,
- 7:08Speaker 7: sort of though, how we romanticize sports he ros and
- 7:12Speaker 7: sports figures in the past, It's just not that way
- 7:15Speaker 7: no more. These these He's a regular dude, And he's
- 7:18Speaker 7: a regular dude apparently, who likes the party, apparently, who
- 7:22Speaker 7: likes the ladies, who likes to live a certain lifestyle.
- 7:25Speaker 7: That's that's sort of that we don't necessarily, uh connect. No,
- 7:31Speaker 7: we don't connect the lifestyle with golfing in that lifestyle.
- 7:36Speaker 7: We don't connect how there actually are with the country
- 7:39Speaker 7: club lifestyle. These guys are partiers, They like to drink,
- 7:42Speaker 7: they like to have a good time. They just like
- 7:44Speaker 7: any other football, basketball player, professional athlet places that they
- 7:48Speaker 7: go to hang out and all those kinds.
- 7:51Speaker 6: I'm going to counter that though, but this is the
- 7:52Speaker 6: fourth time he's been in a major accident. But the
- 7:55Speaker 6: regular nine to five guy that works at the job
- 7:58Speaker 6: at the factory doesn't get a fourth chance to go out.
- 8:02Speaker 3: There, you know.
- 8:04Speaker 6: So, I mean, in a way I agree with Carl
- 8:06Speaker 6: that you know, he's kind of been given this mentality
- 8:10Speaker 6: that he can get away with what he's doing, because,
- 8:13Speaker 6: like I said, I mean not not every time in
- 8:15Speaker 6: these accidents was it related to you know, whatever he's
- 8:20Speaker 6: he's doing, not by you know, whatever allegedly that he
- 8:22Speaker 6: is under the influence of. But you know, at least
- 8:25Speaker 6: two or three of them. One time he was asleep
- 8:27Speaker 6: in his car, right like, they found him.
- 8:29Speaker 5: Sleeping in a car.
- 8:30Speaker 3: But I think he only got one DUI am I correct.
- 8:34Speaker 6: He'll look it up, but I know it's the fourth
- 8:36Speaker 6: time he's had a major accident.
- 8:38Speaker 3: And and and then the question becomes is that just
- 8:42Speaker 3: his driving skills? I mean, and you're right, I'm not.
- 8:47Speaker 4: I don't.
- 8:47Speaker 5: I don't need to give to school, don't.
- 8:50Speaker 7: I don't disagree with you in totality. I mean, obviously
- 8:53Speaker 7: there is a privilege there, right, we know that with money,
- 8:56Speaker 7: and you know, obviously being who he is, there is
- 8:59Speaker 7: a privilege that particular like when he was Nike and
- 9:01Speaker 7: he's at the height of his career, some of this
- 9:02Speaker 7: stuff was going on and may have got swept under
- 9:04Speaker 7: the rug. But at this point, I mean, he's what
- 9:07Speaker 7: darn near fifty is right, And I just think like
- 9:10Speaker 7: this is just who this When I say that, this
- 9:13Speaker 7: is just who this person is, this is just who
- 9:16Speaker 7: they're going to be. And I think, I personally think
- 9:21Speaker 7: have been an athlete and have watched great athletes destroy themselves,
- 9:30Speaker 7: there's something inside of you that's telling you that you're
- 9:34Speaker 7: not who you were.
- 9:35Speaker 3: But do you think he's destroying him? Would you wait
- 9:37Speaker 3: to classify it? Okay, here's what I'm gonna say. I
- 9:41Speaker 3: think there's there's inside of you. You start to know
- 9:44Speaker 3: that you're not who you were. Okay, Now how you
- 9:48Speaker 3: respond to that could be a number of things. Good, Okay,
- 9:51Speaker 3: Now I'm thinking with him. I think he knows it,
- 9:57Speaker 3: but I think there's there's because golf is different golf,
- 10:00Speaker 3: you could you could actually have a good round right
- 10:04Speaker 3: and and make you think like you you still you're
- 10:07Speaker 3: still on top of the world. But I think he
- 10:11Speaker 3: now knows himself that and nobody's telling him he can't
- 10:17Speaker 3: be at the top. But I think in his mind
- 10:20Speaker 3: he knows his game is not where it was and
- 10:24Speaker 3: he does not know how to handle that. I think
- 10:28Speaker 3: his what he's projecting to me is that is the
- 10:35Speaker 3: is the leftover of a great athlete who doesn't know
- 10:39Speaker 3: what else to do.
- 10:41Speaker 8: I mean, that's that's a good point. This is his
- 10:44Speaker 8: second d the first seventeen I want to do.
- 10:50Speaker 3: I'm sorry did he get convicted of that first one?
- 10:54Speaker 4: He pleaded guilty driving.
- 10:56Speaker 8: I'm gonna pitch a different idea here, because let me
- 10:59Speaker 8: let me say what.
- 11:00Speaker 3: He gotta introduce yourself, man producer.
- 11:05Speaker 8: When he was arrested in twenty seventeen, he had five
- 11:08Speaker 8: drugs in his system, vicing it, delauded, xanax, ambient, and THHC.
- 11:12Speaker 8: That sounds to me like a man who's been through
- 11:15Speaker 8: a bunch of surgeries and a bunch of pain, and
- 11:18Speaker 8: so he's got prescription drugs and smoking a little bit
- 11:21Speaker 8: of weed to try to deal with it.
- 11:23Speaker 4: I think he is a drug addict.
- 11:25Speaker 5: I think he's in a lot of I'm gonna go
- 11:27Speaker 5: back to it.
- 11:29Speaker 3: I'm gonna, I'm gonna, I'm gonna agree with it. I'm
- 11:31Speaker 3: gonna agree with you.
- 11:33Speaker 7: So so just to so, you're saying the injuries resulted
- 11:37Speaker 7: in addiction, issuear.
- 11:38Speaker 4: I think he's got an addiction this year.
- 11:40Speaker 3: Absolutely and I think and I think yes, and I
- 11:43Speaker 3: agree with you, and and any of the alcohol pieces
- 11:47Speaker 3: are just a a thing, you know, But he's gonna
- 11:52Speaker 3: because he's and and there's probably opportunities where he has
- 11:55Speaker 3: taken medication and probably drank two. Yeah, I mean that's
- 11:59Speaker 3: not he didn't have alcohol.
- 12:02Speaker 8: I don't think he's actually ever been in an accident
- 12:06Speaker 8: or arrested for DUI where it was alcoholic every Yeah,
- 12:09Speaker 8: it has been substances every every time.
- 12:12Speaker 3: So is that what that then we wouldn't have to
- 12:14Speaker 3: make the case. Then that's why he's not quote I
- 12:17Speaker 3: mean had gone to jail in any of these situations
- 12:20Speaker 3: or well, he still can't do that in trial.
- 12:22Speaker 6: I understand that it's still a DUI. Yeah, but you
- 12:25Speaker 6: look at his physical health. Tying back to what Matt said,
- 12:28Speaker 6: I mean, he's still recovering. He had a disc replacement
- 12:31Speaker 6: in October of twenty twenty five and a ruptured achilles
- 12:35Speaker 6: tendon in March of twenty twenty five.
- 12:38Speaker 5: So October twenty twenty five and.
- 12:39Speaker 6: Then March of twenty he's had like two major surgeries
- 12:42Speaker 6: within the past what twelve to sixteen months?
- 12:45Speaker 3: Right, Yeah, And let me ask this question and and
- 12:47Speaker 3: and because I don't Maybe I should know this, but
- 12:50Speaker 3: I don't know. This is that from playing, Yeah that's
- 12:54Speaker 3: what he did. Fack, No, I'm seeing that. I know
- 12:59Speaker 3: that it happened during the time. You know, maybe it's
- 13:01Speaker 3: back and all and the knee. And I know, like
- 13:06Speaker 3: at one point he was trying to like train like
- 13:08Speaker 3: a Navy seal, so he would be like running with
- 13:10Speaker 3: like combat boots on. He was doing this weird training
- 13:13Speaker 3: resident and I know that threw off some of his
- 13:15Speaker 3: knee and maybe that contribute to the Achilles problem. And
- 13:17Speaker 3: then obviously just swinging at golf like that at the
- 13:20Speaker 3: velocity that he once was swinging it, that contributed to
- 13:23Speaker 3: the back back.
- 13:24Speaker 8: But he started so young. I mean he was when
- 13:26Speaker 8: he was still a child. I mean, you know, he's
- 13:29Speaker 8: essentially been training like a pro since he was single digits.
- 13:32Speaker 7: And so that swings the conversation differently because it swings
- 13:36Speaker 7: to number one, how energy excuse me, how injuries ultimately
- 13:42Speaker 7: maybe affect your mental health that can possibly.
- 13:45Speaker 3: Lead to SUD issues and then to you.
- 13:47Speaker 7: So we can kind of combine Matt and your point
- 13:50Speaker 7: coach lead and now not only are you seeing the
- 13:53Speaker 7: injury stack up. But now there is a natural depression
- 13:56Speaker 7: because you're seeing that you're not once what you was.
- 13:59Speaker 7: So that now that further contributes to the to the
- 14:02Speaker 7: addiction issues, and it leads to a lot of the
- 14:04Speaker 7: things that we've been seeing like far as you know,
- 14:07Speaker 7: SUD and substance use disorder in athletes, suicide and athletes,
- 14:11Speaker 7: depression in athletes, because when you have all these things combined. Again,
- 14:17Speaker 7: I was just a Division two football player, and my
- 14:19Speaker 7: shoulder is shocked. I'm talking about like done done right.
- 14:22Speaker 7: Like I can barely like kind of lift on it.
- 14:25Speaker 7: I have to be very very careful sleeping on it,
- 14:27Speaker 7: lifting on it. So I can't imagine to your point, Matt,
- 14:30Speaker 7: somebody who's been playing consistently since three years old. Now
- 14:34Speaker 7: you're in your fifties and all that stuff tied up,
- 14:37Speaker 7: sort of sort of stacked up on you. Now you
- 14:40Speaker 7: were at the top of the mountain and now you're not.
- 14:42Speaker 3: And to and to to a piece of that the
- 14:47Speaker 3: way we talked about it, swing and all these kinds
- 14:50Speaker 3: of things, the power in which all of that demanded,
- 14:56Speaker 3: I mean, come on, like I mean that that it's
- 15:00Speaker 3: going to be hard on your body. You know, so
- 15:03Speaker 3: you know you can.
- 15:04Speaker 4: You can.
- 15:05Speaker 3: Football causes a whole host of injuries. So when you
- 15:09Speaker 3: look at golf, you're like, well, what could golf do?
- 15:11Speaker 3: Play at that level? Play at that level and swing
- 15:15Speaker 3: the swing your club like him and like some of
- 15:18Speaker 3: the other guys do. And see over time, because not
- 15:21Speaker 3: only are you swinging it that way when we're watching you,
- 15:25Speaker 3: but you're you're practicing every single any any sport can
- 15:29Speaker 3: do that if you play, if you're a professional bowler,
- 15:31Speaker 3: I'm sure they have, you know, arm problems. And but
- 15:36Speaker 3: but I think it again, this leads to a much
- 15:39Speaker 3: different conversation. And I think that you know, when we
- 15:43Speaker 3: talk about mental health issues, when we talk about SUD issues,
- 15:47Speaker 3: we have to think about those things different in athletes.
- 15:50Speaker 3: And it doesn't matter the level that you played. You
- 15:53Speaker 3: could be a great high school player. Then once that's over,
- 15:56Speaker 3: there is a natural depression that sets in once you
- 15:59Speaker 3: know you can't do that thing that you used to
- 16:01Speaker 3: do anymore at the level that you used to do it.
- 16:03Speaker 3: So this is like, I think, it's a much deeper,
- 16:06Speaker 3: maybe conversation, and and I'm fortunate enough too to say
- 16:12Speaker 3: I I saw myself, I saw myself not being good
- 16:18Speaker 3: enough two to keep playing, you know, and and and
- 16:23Speaker 3: I and I saw it and and and for me,
- 16:26Speaker 3: and so it wasn't light and the load though, well,
- 16:28Speaker 3: it doesn't make it easier, I think, I think for me.
- 16:31Speaker 3: I think for me it did because like I would
- 16:35Speaker 3: have probably tried to play again. But this happened like
- 16:38Speaker 3: midway through the season, and when and I was thinking
- 16:41Speaker 3: to myself, man, when the season. I just can't wait
- 16:43Speaker 3: for the season to get done because I don't want
- 16:45Speaker 3: to ruin my career, you know, with with eight more
- 16:50Speaker 3: games to play, you know, I don't want I don't
- 16:52Speaker 3: want to get everybody throwing the ball at me and
- 16:55Speaker 3: scoring touchdowns and all that kind of stuff. But I
- 16:57Speaker 3: knew that I just couldn't do the things that I
- 17:01Speaker 3: had done before. And it showed up and I was like, Okay,
- 17:05Speaker 3: I just want to get through this season and get
- 17:07Speaker 3: out of here and and call it call it a career. Yeah.
- 17:11Speaker 5: So I guess, excuse me.
- 17:13Speaker 6: My question would be then is and maybe we answered
- 17:15Speaker 6: this question already. You hear people say, you know, Tiger
- 17:18Speaker 6: Woods has you know, disposable income beyond belief, why doesn't
- 17:23Speaker 6: he hire a driver? So now I think what we're
- 17:26Speaker 6: talking about, this discussion of maybe the deeper issues of
- 17:30Speaker 6: depression and you know, the drug issues that's gonna cloud
- 17:34Speaker 6: the way that you view, you know, getting into a
- 17:37Speaker 6: vehicle and driving from point A to point B. To him,
- 17:40Speaker 6: he doesn't, Yeah, so he doesn't feel like he needs
- 17:42Speaker 6: a driver, even though most people are like, why don't
- 17:44Speaker 6: you get a driver?
- 17:45Speaker 5: Like that's one of the things you hear all the time.
- 17:47Speaker 7: And then you may not want to get a driver
- 17:49Speaker 7: because there's also that privacy issue. Right, So if I'm
- 17:52Speaker 7: doing all this stuff, I don't want it. I don't
- 17:56Speaker 7: want people to know about it. If I'm going here
- 17:57Speaker 7: to there, I get this to that I don't want
- 17:59Speaker 7: somebody in my business. But like I said, even that point,
- 18:02Speaker 7: there's a great point, Lisa. But also we can go
- 18:04Speaker 7: back to the women. All those things are can be
- 18:07Speaker 7: manifestations of a mental health issue, right, you know what
- 18:10Speaker 7: I'm saying. And I was probably being a little bit
- 18:13Speaker 7: you know, trying to be a little bit you know,
- 18:14Speaker 7: funny and cavalier about it. But now that you brought
- 18:17Speaker 7: that up, Matt, I mean we probably got to assess
- 18:19Speaker 7: it a little different. And I think just overall, outside
- 18:22Speaker 7: of tiger woods. We have to start to assess these
- 18:24Speaker 7: things in athletes at all levels, because it is a
- 18:27Speaker 7: hell of it's a hell of a thing to do
- 18:29Speaker 7: something you've done your whole life, to put your whole
- 18:32Speaker 7: identity behind, and now you don't get the chance to
- 18:35Speaker 7: do that no more. And to that, and to that,
- 18:39Speaker 7: and again i'm gonna touch on me walking away.
- 18:45Speaker 3: I think you have to accept whatever whatever greatness that
- 18:50Speaker 3: you had, you have to accept that as that's the
- 18:53Speaker 3: mouthstone and for whatever whatever badness, if that's such a thing,
- 19:00Speaker 3: you know, all the all the bad times that you
- 19:03Speaker 3: had quote into the sport or whatever, you have to
- 19:07Speaker 3: accept that. And when you can do that, when you
- 19:10Speaker 3: can when you can balance those things, then I think
- 19:14Speaker 3: it becomes an easier way to get out, to leave
- 19:18Speaker 3: the sport. Because if you if you leave the sport
- 19:22Speaker 3: and you still think that you're on top of the mountain.
- 19:26Speaker 3: In most cases, a lot of folks don't leave on
- 19:29Speaker 3: top of the.
- 19:30Speaker 5: Mountain, right They've stayed too long.
- 19:32Speaker 3: They stay too long, you know, they they they have
- 19:35Speaker 3: an average, They have an average that created yes, because
- 19:39Speaker 3: all of a sudden, you have that average season, then
- 19:41Speaker 3: you're going to play one more, because what do you want?
- 19:43Speaker 3: You want to I want to be great. I want
- 19:45Speaker 3: to leave great. And then when you go in there
- 19:49Speaker 3: trying to be great and your body can't do it.
- 19:52Speaker 3: And you know when you see this most is it
- 19:55Speaker 3: like in boxing?
- 19:56Speaker 5: Oh yeah, that's a good point.
- 19:57Speaker 6: Boxing is Boxing is one of the perfect example of
- 20:02Speaker 6: not giving up, not giving up.
- 20:04Speaker 3: And assuming that you can get to the mountaintop one
- 20:07Speaker 3: more time. And you go in there and you go
- 20:10Speaker 3: one more time, and what is the distinction between the
- 20:13Speaker 3: guy that's beating you. It's not necessarily he's better than you.
- 20:16Speaker 3: He's just younger than you exactly. Yeah, and you just
- 20:20Speaker 3: can't do all the things that you use.
- 20:23Speaker 5: NFL quarterbacks are pretty bad about that too.
- 20:25Speaker 6: I mean, you know that they don't know when to
- 20:27Speaker 6: pass the torch and move it on. You know, they
- 20:29Speaker 6: want to go to another team thinking that's the answer,
- 20:31Speaker 6: and a lot of times they just stayed too long.
- 20:34Speaker 7: Yeah, but again, I think it all relates back to
- 20:35Speaker 7: mental health and we've got to start to look at
- 20:37Speaker 7: that different now, just move on a little bit lighter. UFL,
- 20:41Speaker 7: the United Football League is the sort of they wouldn't
- 20:45Speaker 7: call themselves the minor league of football. But it's a
- 20:48Speaker 7: spring football league. But I'm saying we need it, right,
- 20:52Speaker 7: We definitely we need a different football league.
- 20:54Speaker 3: Yeah, okay, okay, help me with.
- 20:56Speaker 7: That, because if I'm a Division two football player, what's
- 21:00Speaker 7: my incentive to play anymore? Like why why am I
- 21:02Speaker 7: playing this game? And I don't have and I know
- 21:05Speaker 7: that the finite NFL you only have so many slots,
- 21:09Speaker 7: so you football has to expand. Football has to become
- 21:12Speaker 7: like basketball, like baseball, where you have a different opportunity
- 21:16Speaker 7: to play up. Well, I could possibly play in that
- 21:18Speaker 7: league for four or five years and then get an
- 21:20Speaker 7: NFL shot. We need like three to four I would
- 21:23Speaker 7: say around the world, you need like five legitimate minor
- 21:27Speaker 7: league football system. NFL needs to create a system in
- 21:30Speaker 7: which I can get paid and possibly play my way
- 21:33Speaker 7: up to an NFL contract. There's no path to do
- 21:35Speaker 7: that other than the time you have in college. And
- 21:37Speaker 7: they're gonna get they're gonna put that back down to four.
- 21:40Speaker 7: All the transfer stuff is about to go. So it
- 21:42Speaker 7: has to be I love this and we need to
- 21:45Speaker 7: support it, and it has to be funded by the
- 21:48Speaker 7: NFL to me, because there's no pathway to go. There's
- 21:51Speaker 7: no incentive for kids to play football no more.
- 21:53Speaker 5: I wish people could see the luck on crosson right now.
- 21:56Speaker 7: If you if you had a son, if no, excuse me,
- 21:59Speaker 7: if you have a grandson, niche, nephew, whatever, there's six
- 22:02Speaker 7: five they could play receiver in football, or they could
- 22:07Speaker 7: play basketball and be a wing just from and they're
- 22:11Speaker 7: just equally as good in both. I'm probably gonna tell
- 22:14Speaker 7: this play. I mean, other than your passion, let's play
- 22:17Speaker 7: basketball because we're probably going to have a better chance
- 22:19Speaker 7: to make money playing basketball as opposed to football. So
- 22:22Speaker 7: you need a minor league system.
- 22:23Speaker 3: We need it. We have to have it, Okay, I don't.
- 22:26Speaker 4: I don't.
- 22:26Speaker 3: Okay, So to that example, I don't. I don't understand
- 22:30Speaker 3: that the lower league or the because we don't have
- 22:35Speaker 3: a lower league in football, there's no there's minor leagues
- 22:37Speaker 3: all up and down baseball, there's minor leagues in basketball
- 22:40Speaker 3: all over the world. There's there's there's literally you will
- 22:43Speaker 3: see what I'm getting ready to say, there's literally one
- 22:45Speaker 3: minor league football. You're gonna hate what. You're gonna hate
- 22:48Speaker 3: what I'm gonna say. College is your it's not it
- 22:55Speaker 3: is it is, it may it may not be what
- 22:59Speaker 3: you want it to be right now or or going forward.
- 23:03Speaker 3: But that is where it is now. It is college
- 23:06Speaker 3: and now.
- 23:06Speaker 7: But we need to expand beyond that because what we've
- 23:09Speaker 7: seen is like everybody's complaining, Well, you got a guy
- 23:11Speaker 7: who's twenty six and twenty seven year old playing college football.
- 23:14Speaker 7: Where else is he supposed to play at? That's college's fault. No, no,
- 23:20Speaker 7: it should it's the NFL's fault because they need a
- 23:23Speaker 7: legitimate minor league system.
- 23:25Speaker 6: All right, all right, I'm gonna I'm gonna break this little,
- 23:28Speaker 6: this little tiff up there, hair guys. So so I'm
- 23:32Speaker 6: going to agree with both of you to a point. Okay,
- 23:36Speaker 6: I do agree with you, Hollis, that we need some
- 23:38Speaker 6: type of bonor you know, league lower level for these kids,
- 23:43Speaker 6: kind of a stepping stone between college and football. But
- 23:47Speaker 6: I'm also with Carl and the fact that I just
- 23:50Speaker 6: don't think the UFL or any of its predecessors.
- 23:55Speaker 5: I mean, you think about it.
- 23:55Speaker 6: We've had the XFL, we've had the USFL, right Car,
- 23:59Speaker 6: all that was in your day, right the world.
- 24:02Speaker 5: None of them have lasted long enough.
- 24:04Speaker 6: If they all fold within two to three years before
- 24:07Speaker 6: you even have a chance for them to become impact.
- 24:10Speaker 7: Because they have funded by the NFL. The NFL is
- 24:12Speaker 7: not funded any of those.
- 24:14Speaker 5: It's being funded by NFL.
- 24:15Speaker 7: I think there's a partnership there, so I don't think
- 24:18Speaker 7: it's necessarily a direct on record.
- 24:19Speaker 6: I just remember the Province McMahon days and he lasted
- 24:23Speaker 6: like a year.
- 24:24Speaker 5: I mean that was kind of And these rules now also.
- 24:27Speaker 7: This is a this is an opportunity to test rule changes.
- 24:31Speaker 7: So this is the four and again we've seen the
- 24:34Speaker 7: rule changes come to the NFL.
- 24:35Speaker 3: Okay, so before you go into your before you go
- 24:38Speaker 3: into your rules, right, Okay, here's my here. Okay, I
- 24:41Speaker 3: want to give you. I want to give you my
- 24:42Speaker 3: story to the USFL. All right. I was an NFL
- 24:48Speaker 3: guy from age seven. That's where I wanted to go. Okay,
- 24:52Speaker 3: So I'm I'm getting calls and stuff, and you know,
- 24:57Speaker 3: I'm thinking, I'm going to get an opportunity to play
- 24:59Speaker 3: in the NFL. USFL guaranteeing me. They're matching, they're matching
- 25:05Speaker 3: the money that the NFL has given me, and they
- 25:08Speaker 3: want me to come to the USFL. I thought about it,
- 25:13Speaker 3: but you know what I said, I said, I've spent
- 25:16Speaker 3: my entire life wanting to go to the NFL. I
- 25:19Speaker 3: do not want to go to something that I think
- 25:21Speaker 3: is going to be less than so to me, the
- 25:26Speaker 3: problem that we have is any player, no player is
- 25:32Speaker 3: going to dream to play in that league. Their dream
- 25:35Speaker 3: is going to always be the NFL. And and now
- 25:40Speaker 3: you might get to go to that other league, but
- 25:42Speaker 3: your dream, your dream is nobody is dreaming to be
- 25:46Speaker 3: in a.
- 25:47Speaker 7: I think your argument is flawed in two ways. Number One,
- 25:51Speaker 7: the no no, the USFL, the XFL. All the predecessors
- 25:57Speaker 7: of the UFL were trying to compete with the NFL.
- 26:00Speaker 7: They were calling themselves, we are a professional league. We
- 26:03Speaker 7: are competing with the NFL. What this league is doing,
- 26:07Speaker 7: they're not doing that. They're saying, if you're a young
- 26:10Speaker 7: coach and you want an opportunity to coach and build
- 26:13Speaker 7: your resume, come here and then you move up. If
- 26:15Speaker 7: you're a player who's played college football, you don't have
- 26:18Speaker 7: an opportunity to NFL, come here and moved up. We've
- 26:21Speaker 7: literally seen teams signed, they have signed players. So the Redskins,
- 26:25Speaker 7: the NFL team, have signed players who play in the
- 26:27Speaker 7: USFL that are like on practice squads who are free agents,
- 26:31Speaker 7: I can sign you, get some tape, and then if
- 26:33Speaker 7: you're good enough, you can come here. This league is
- 26:35Speaker 7: not trying to compete with the NFL. What it's saying
- 26:38Speaker 7: is a complimentary league to say, hey, if you need reps,
- 26:42Speaker 7: if you need to play, if you're not getting your
- 26:44Speaker 7: opportunity you've been if you went to the training camp here,
- 26:46Speaker 7: you didn't work out here, you can come here and play.
- 26:48Speaker 7: We've seen players play in the Spring Football League then
- 26:51Speaker 7: transition directly to NFL camps in the summer, and we've
- 26:55Speaker 7: also seen so this is there's nothing this positive.
- 27:00Speaker 3: No one that's made.
- 27:01Speaker 7: There's a kicker who was a pro bowler. I forget
- 27:04Speaker 7: his name, he's a kicker who is a pro bowler.
- 27:05Speaker 7: And there's a there was like several backup quarterbacks and
- 27:08Speaker 7: a few running backs in the linebackers that I don't
- 27:11Speaker 7: know their name, but they transition from the USFL to
- 27:14Speaker 7: the NFL. And this is an opportunity for the NFL
- 27:18Speaker 7: to test rules. So let me just go over the rules, right.
- 27:20Speaker 3: That's the rules, all right.
- 27:21Speaker 7: So one of the rules, several of the rules that
- 27:23Speaker 7: they're testing out this year a four point field goal.
- 27:27Speaker 7: So basically excuse me, a four point field goal, So
- 27:29Speaker 7: if you kick a field goal from sixty plus, now
- 27:32Speaker 7: it's gonna count as four.
- 27:33Speaker 3: In the USFL, they've outlawed.
- 27:36Speaker 7: The tush push once you pass the fifty yard line,
- 27:40Speaker 7: So if you start to drive on the twenty twenty
- 27:42Speaker 7: five yard line, you make it to the to your
- 27:44Speaker 7: to your into your forty, you can no longer punt,
- 27:47Speaker 7: so you have to go for it on fourth down.
- 27:49Speaker 7: So it change the dynamic of your play caller. Instead
- 27:53Speaker 7: of receivers having one foot in bound, excuse me, two
- 27:55Speaker 7: feet in bounds at the pro, at the NFL level,
- 27:58Speaker 7: they can have one foot. There's a overtime shootout rule.
- 28:02Speaker 7: The format three alternative attempts from the five yard line
- 28:05Speaker 7: for each team, and I can go more detail into
- 28:08Speaker 7: that later. The point after the touchdown, so you can
- 28:12Speaker 7: go for the traditional one point that's from the fifteen
- 28:16Speaker 7: yard line. There's a two point try from the two
- 28:19Speaker 7: yard line, and there's also a three yard excuse me,
- 28:22Speaker 7: a three point try from the eight yard So those
- 28:25Speaker 7: are like, you know, you got to try to get
- 28:27Speaker 7: the quote unquote touchdown or two or the conversion. Defensive
- 28:31Speaker 7: passing affairs they adopted the NFL rule and obviously the kickoff,
- 28:35Speaker 7: so they moved it up five yards.
- 28:37Speaker 3: So again this is the opportunity. So those are the new.
- 28:39Speaker 5: Rules right right, And my question is why why are
- 28:42Speaker 5: they doing.
- 28:43Speaker 7: To test them out to see how they look, to
- 28:45Speaker 7: see if it's pliable, like we've seen the kickoff.
- 28:48Speaker 6: Change, so they think that if they do those things.
- 28:51Speaker 6: I mean, this is just my opinion, and I need
- 28:55Speaker 6: to educate myself more. I'm just not a UFL fan.
- 28:58Speaker 6: Maybe I need to watch it more often and maybe
- 29:01Speaker 6: I would become a better fan. But some of these changes,
- 29:05Speaker 6: it just they sound a little gimmicky, you know, And
- 29:09Speaker 6: it's just it sounds like a ployee to get more viewership,
- 29:11Speaker 6: which I know they need, and you know, maybe it'll work,
- 29:15Speaker 6: maybe some people will tune in just to see how
- 29:17Speaker 6: it works.
- 29:17Speaker 7: I don't think it's a ployed I don't think it's
- 29:19Speaker 7: a gimmick. I think the NFL is saying once y'all tried,
- 29:23Speaker 7: is to see how this plays and see how.
- 29:24Speaker 6: The NFL make those kind of changes. Those are pretty fun.
- 29:27Speaker 6: I mean, all know all I'm talking about all of those,
- 29:30Speaker 6: all of it.
- 29:30Speaker 8: But let me give you a good comparison here major
- 29:33Speaker 8: league baseball. That's that's my sport, that's what I follow.
- 29:36Speaker 8: In recent years, they've implemented the pitch class clock. Where
- 29:40Speaker 8: did they start that. They didn't start that in Major
- 29:42Speaker 8: League baseball. They tested it in minor league baseball. And
- 29:47Speaker 8: that's the perfect example. A lot of the world changes
- 29:49Speaker 8: they've done in the major leagues have come from the minors.
- 29:53Speaker 8: Same thing here when it comes to bringing players in
- 29:56Speaker 8: when you sign I knew somebody. I worked with him
- 30:00Speaker 8: out of high school. He was from Buffalo, West Virginia,
- 30:02Speaker 8: and he got signed to be a pitcher for the
- 30:05Speaker 8: Arizona Diamondbacks. Now he went into the minor leagues, but
- 30:08Speaker 8: he got a seven hundred thousand dollars contract, yeah, as an.
- 30:11Speaker 5: Eighteen year old, which is awesome.
- 30:13Speaker 8: In the Diamondbacks organization. And then literally clocked out and
- 30:17Speaker 8: quit his job at Walmart and that was it. He
- 30:19Speaker 8: was off working for the Diamondbacks, but he was in
- 30:23Speaker 8: the pros from that point on. So you know, that
- 30:27Speaker 8: minor league system, I mean, not only does it give
- 30:30Speaker 8: you place where you can find talented, qualified players, but
- 30:35Speaker 8: you can try out all of this kind of stuff.
- 30:37Speaker 8: That's the perfect place.
- 30:38Speaker 5: It just seems like allotted for all at once.
- 30:41Speaker 6: That baby, I don't know. It just sounds like it
- 30:42Speaker 6: changes the fundamentals of the game.
- 30:44Speaker 5: Carl, you're the player. Come on.
- 30:46Speaker 7: But they but one thing they changed from the UFL
- 30:50Speaker 7: is the kickoff. So now there's no head of the collision.
- 30:53Speaker 7: You start ten yards apart and then you kick it.
- 30:55Speaker 7: So that's one fundamental change. It just to put a
- 30:58Speaker 7: pin in my point. There's been a hundred Spring league
- 31:01Speaker 7: players included in the NFL rosters from twenty twenty two.
- 31:04Speaker 3: One hundred. That's a difference, and that's an opportunity.
- 31:07Speaker 5: It is an opportunity.
- 31:08Speaker 3: Well, okay, I get it as it's an opportunity, and
- 31:13Speaker 3: that you you make the team, you're you're on the roster.
- 31:20Speaker 3: I just don't know. I and again me being a
- 31:24Speaker 3: lucky guy to to to make a roster out of
- 31:28Speaker 3: a seventh round pick. So like, so I'm not that
- 31:31Speaker 3: guy up here, I'm that guy who's down here at
- 31:34Speaker 3: the bottom. So I can I can I can come
- 31:38Speaker 3: back and then say, well I didn't have to be
- 31:40Speaker 3: at the bottom. I think you know, my my career
- 31:43Speaker 3: speaks and says that I could have maybe been a
- 31:45Speaker 3: little higher, And so maybe they got it wrong. So
- 31:48Speaker 3: to your point of the recruitment of athletes, it is flawed.
- 31:54Speaker 3: I do know. I think I think the way we
- 31:57Speaker 3: recruit because crew or you're talking about like me, get
- 32:00Speaker 3: to get to the prok, you know, to get in
- 32:03Speaker 3: the way they draft, you know, it's it's it's not
- 32:07Speaker 3: it's not really science, but they but they tried. They
- 32:11Speaker 3: try to make it science like they try to make
- 32:13Speaker 3: it that they that they've done all the research. Because
- 32:15Speaker 3: if you did all the research, you would never have
- 32:18Speaker 3: a seventh round pick. When when when the draft was
- 32:21Speaker 3: like twelve, thirteen, fourteen, fifteen, whatever it was, you're not
- 32:24Speaker 3: gonna You're that seventh round guy is not gonna be
- 32:26Speaker 3: on your roster.
- 32:27Speaker 7: That's I disagree with that, because you it's certain, it's
- 32:29Speaker 7: certain intangibles like I can't I can't account for I
- 32:33Speaker 7: can't account for this, and this is the story you told.
- 32:36Speaker 7: I can't account for you being in the root of
- 32:39Speaker 7: roommate for somebody who's clearly more talented than you but
- 32:42Speaker 7: drunk himself out the league. Maybe I can't account for
- 32:44Speaker 7: somebody who's just gonna work harder than the other person
- 32:47Speaker 7: that I drafted in.
- 32:48Speaker 3: The first round. I can't. I can't account for that.
- 32:51Speaker 3: But you're but you're but you're counting. Yes, but you're
- 32:54Speaker 3: but you took the risk to draft him.
- 32:56Speaker 7: It doesn't matter because all the metrics said that he
- 32:59Speaker 7: was better than you, but that didn't turn out to
- 33:01Speaker 7: be true. And what I'm trying to say is that
- 33:03Speaker 7: if we need a minor league system in football, we
- 33:06Speaker 7: need it.
- 33:06Speaker 6: And and I totally agree with that point, Hallis, I
- 33:09Speaker 6: totally agree. But is this the right venue, because like
- 33:12Speaker 6: you said, I mean, and now I'm talking about just
- 33:14Speaker 6: the league and this this whole UFL.
- 33:17Speaker 5: Yeah, I don't set that. That's what I'm saying. I'm
- 33:20Speaker 5: not saying that it's not needed.
- 33:22Speaker 6: Having some type of a level in between college and
- 33:26Speaker 6: the NFL. That that's totally needed. And I'm just wondering.
- 33:29Speaker 5: If this is the appropriate group. I don't know. I
- 33:34Speaker 5: don't know what league league, right.
- 33:36Speaker 3: Yes, that's okay.
- 33:37Speaker 4: I mean.
- 33:39Speaker 5: I think I just think it's skimmicky. I think you.
- 33:42Speaker 3: Have to be I think it should come from if
- 33:44Speaker 3: you're gonna do it, it needs to come from the inside.
- 33:48Speaker 3: It needs to come from inside of the NFL.
- 33:50Speaker 7: The NFL has already said they're not going to do
- 33:52Speaker 7: They're not going to flip the bill holistically, they're not
- 33:55Speaker 7: gonna put the NFL's already. They clearly made that statement
- 33:57Speaker 7: and made that distinction because liability and probably a.
- 34:00Speaker 5: Bunch of the money.
- 34:04Speaker 7: But it's also but they've they've come to a sweet
- 34:07Speaker 7: spot with the u f f L because number one,
- 34:11Speaker 7: there is I don't I would, I don't want to
- 34:14Speaker 7: go as far as they're saying they're subsidizing, but I
- 34:16Speaker 7: would imagine there's some some back door help that's being
- 34:20Speaker 7: able to stabilize the league. And number two, what they're
- 34:23Speaker 7: realizing is development, and particularly at the quarterback position, because
- 34:26Speaker 7: there's a few quarterbacks that have made the transition from
- 34:29Speaker 7: the USFL, because that's the one position in which you
- 34:32Speaker 7: need more reps, you.
- 34:33Speaker 3: Need more time. I think of a guy like.
- 34:37Speaker 7: The quarterback for for for for the Colts, kid from Florida.
- 34:44Speaker 7: You know what I'm talking about. He kid from Florida.
- 34:48Speaker 7: He's very he's looking it up for us. Very talented guy,
- 34:52Speaker 7: but clearly just didn't have enough. I think he played
- 34:55Speaker 7: none of the backup from Florida. Clearly just didn't have
- 35:01Speaker 7: enough reps. Right, So so no No, he's a free
- 35:06Speaker 7: from Florida, black kid from Florida.
- 35:10Speaker 4: Failing me here.
- 35:13Speaker 7: Sometimes backup quarterback from from from Florida. But clearly just
- 35:18Speaker 7: didn't have enough reps. Right, So in a situation, like
- 35:20Speaker 7: a perfect world, you could send him to the USFL,
- 35:23Speaker 7: get a season under your belt, get more reps, and
- 35:26Speaker 7: then come back.
- 35:27Speaker 4: Anthony Richards, Anthony Richards third.
- 35:30Speaker 3: Okay, but I can, I can, I can make the
- 35:34Speaker 3: case playing I played a different position in college than
- 35:39Speaker 3: I did pro and in in my time in making
- 35:45Speaker 3: that switch, there's enough time gotta get out of you
- 35:50Speaker 3: though this ain't this, ain't this ain't you and this is.
- 35:52Speaker 7: A different eraror you didn't have time, there was no
- 35:55Speaker 7: other choice number one, and you were a good enough
- 35:58Speaker 7: athlete that you can make the transition.
- 36:02Speaker 3: But but I think, I think I just don't. I
- 36:06Speaker 3: just don't know, like I just don't know how to
- 36:09Speaker 3: buy into it being creating a systematical.
- 36:14Speaker 7: Way to make sure we get to Okay, Well, let
- 36:15Speaker 7: me ask you this. Every other league has a minor
- 36:18Speaker 7: league system of self football. Why every other league every
- 36:22Speaker 7: other sport that's soccer, tennis, hockey, baseball, basketball, NASCAR, all
- 36:31Speaker 7: these have a symbolis of a minor league team.
- 36:33Speaker 3: Excuse me, league a set of football. Why, probably the
- 36:36Speaker 3: owners don't want to spend.
- 36:37Speaker 8: The money where it is.
- 36:39Speaker 3: But that doesn't say we don't need it.
- 36:42Speaker 5: I need it.
- 36:44Speaker 6: And that's what's concerning about the UFL because Major League
- 36:48Speaker 6: Baseball they have all their their you know, lower level leagues,
- 36:51Speaker 6: and they own them. I mean they they you know,
- 36:53Speaker 6: they have ownership. They say, you know, these kids go
- 36:56Speaker 6: to this team whenever they make the big leagues. And
- 36:59Speaker 6: with with the UFL, the NFL says, oh, okay, that's cool,
- 37:03Speaker 6: We'll take some of your players when they're ready, but
- 37:05Speaker 6: we're not going to help you out.
- 37:06Speaker 5: We're not going to own you.
- 37:07Speaker 6: We're not going to look at you like the Major
- 37:09Speaker 6: League Baseball looks at their minor leagues.
- 37:11Speaker 5: Does that make sense.
- 37:12Speaker 3: They don't have a relationship, but they got a relationship,
- 37:14Speaker 3: so they don't have ownership.
- 37:16Speaker 7: They got a relationship because obviously they're influencing these like
- 37:20Speaker 7: just playing with the rules. These aren't coming.
- 37:22Speaker 3: Would you would you be would you be okay with
- 37:25Speaker 3: let's say in the Vikings had a team, the Vikings,
- 37:28Speaker 3: it's the Minnesota Vikings. And then there is a Vikings
- 37:34Speaker 3: sub team, right, okay, because here's the part of the
- 37:40Speaker 3: transition and part of the hard the hardest part of
- 37:43Speaker 3: the transition is what you did in college versus what
- 37:46Speaker 3: you're going to do in the pros. A lot of
- 37:48Speaker 3: players can't make that transition. They can't they can't do
- 37:51Speaker 3: the things that they're being asked to do at a
- 37:54Speaker 3: level that they need to play. So if you gave
- 37:59Speaker 3: them an opportunity to advance, you know, so practice could
- 38:05Speaker 3: be with the team you but you could still be playing.
- 38:08Speaker 3: But that's what this is and trying to no, no,
- 38:12Speaker 3: I'm trying to work with you. I'm I'm working my
- 38:15Speaker 3: way back to you to be with you.
- 38:17Speaker 4: Okay.
- 38:19Speaker 3: I wanted to have a little love after this show,
- 38:21Speaker 3: so I can. I can understand if you. But I
- 38:28Speaker 3: think those guys have to be designated to a team.
- 38:32Speaker 3: I think some of them are.
- 38:33Speaker 4: You know.
- 38:34Speaker 3: And if you do that, then that they have an
- 38:36Speaker 3: opportunity I think to learn that system. But again, some
- 38:43Speaker 3: of those guys, everybody's not gonna make it in that group,
- 38:46Speaker 3: you know, And so you're gonna get cut and are
- 38:51Speaker 3: you gonna go somewhere else.
- 38:52Speaker 4: Or like what?
- 38:53Speaker 7: I just don't think I think this is kind of
- 38:56Speaker 7: wild to me that this would be like, because this
- 38:58Speaker 7: is just such.
- 38:59Speaker 3: A win win.
- 39:00Speaker 7: If you're a player coming from state or UC, yeah,
- 39:03Speaker 7: your dream is to go to the NFL. But if
- 39:05Speaker 7: that doesn't happen, now I can go somewhere else, get
- 39:08Speaker 7: health insurance. Because they get a health insurance. They make
- 39:11Speaker 7: seventy five thousand dollars a year playing in this league.
- 39:14Speaker 7: So I make seventy five grand, not a whole, not
- 39:16Speaker 7: all the money in the world, but it's a start.
- 39:20Speaker 7: I have the opportunity to audition openly auditioned, because the
- 39:24Speaker 7: UFL is not saying where you got to stay here.
- 39:27Speaker 7: They're saying, hey, go sign with that team if you
- 39:29Speaker 7: can sign with him, if you can get an NFL contract,
- 39:31Speaker 7: or maybe even Canada if you can get up there.
- 39:33Speaker 7: So I got the opportunity to make a little money
- 39:36Speaker 7: after college. I got the opportunity to get health care.
- 39:38Speaker 7: I got opportunity to get tape to go to a team.
- 39:42Speaker 7: And I also there's a guy who I think he
- 39:46Speaker 7: coaches the Columbus team. He's from West Virginia. Beckler I
- 39:49Speaker 7: think is his name. He was a former tight end
- 39:51Speaker 7: for West Virginia So now if I'm a coach, I
- 39:54Speaker 7: got the opportunity, say, if I want to go to coaching,
- 39:57Speaker 7: and again only so many slots available, and I don't
- 39:59Speaker 7: get a good d one job or don't get an
- 40:02Speaker 7: NFL job, then I can go there, get my bones,
- 40:05Speaker 7: start coaching there, and then work my way up. So
- 40:07Speaker 7: on the coaching side, the GM side, the player side,
- 40:10Speaker 7: the player development, I got the opportunity to go work, learn,
- 40:15Speaker 7: and then move on.
- 40:16Speaker 3: This is a win win. The only person that is
- 40:19Speaker 3: not a win win is going to be to the
- 40:21Speaker 3: GM and the owner. No it's not, yes, it is
- 40:24Speaker 3: how because they don't want to pay. What do you
- 40:26Speaker 3: mean they're not gonna want to pay.
- 40:28Speaker 7: You're talking about the NFF, talking about the GM, of
- 40:31Speaker 7: the of the's.
- 40:31Speaker 5: Talking about the UL album.
- 40:33Speaker 3: I'm not talking about the Okay, Okay.
- 40:36Speaker 6: They stay financially afloat because it's it's obviously been a
- 40:39Speaker 6: problem when you have to merge two leagues to stay up,
- 40:43Speaker 6: you're you know, keep your head above water. So I mean,
- 40:46Speaker 6: I think it's a great opportunity for the kids. Like
- 40:48Speaker 6: you're you're talking about hollists that they get paid, they
- 40:50Speaker 6: get insurance. But we've seen Historically, these leagues don't last.
- 40:55Speaker 6: I mean that not one has lasted more than two
- 40:57Speaker 6: or three years.
- 40:58Speaker 4: Because they don't make money.
- 40:59Speaker 7: They don't mind man, and I think they've always tried
- 41:02Speaker 7: to be a competitor to the NFL. And I don't
- 41:05Speaker 7: think that's what this.
- 41:05Speaker 5: League is doing. Well, then I hope that's the So
- 41:08Speaker 5: if you.
- 41:08Speaker 3: Put them together, if you, if so, if the NFL
- 41:11Speaker 3: is going to to co sponsor or sponsor, okay, then
- 41:19Speaker 3: the question, the question becomes.
- 41:22Speaker 5: Ideal, which would be ideal?
- 41:24Speaker 3: It would be you know, if they if they, if
- 41:26Speaker 3: they Viking team, and but that's not where we're at.
- 41:31Speaker 4: Though.
- 41:31Speaker 7: Where we're at is the NFL. I think they understand
- 41:36Speaker 7: they need this league now. Again, whether they're at the
- 41:39Speaker 7: point where they want to break bread and actually become
- 41:42Speaker 7: financially involved is one thing. But they're But the NFL
- 41:46Speaker 7: realizes we need this team, we need this league, we
- 41:49Speaker 7: need them.
- 41:50Speaker 3: The owners will never bow down there. I don't think they.
- 41:53Speaker 7: I think they don't have a choice no more, because
- 41:56Speaker 7: you need this league. College football needs this league because
- 42:00Speaker 7: because again, you don't want twenty eight year old dudes
- 42:03Speaker 7: out here playing college football no more. Nobody wants that
- 42:06Speaker 7: in the NFL owners saying we don't have we don't
- 42:09Speaker 7: have an opportunity to test rules. We need a place
- 42:12Speaker 7: where we can say, is this rule, how does this
- 42:14Speaker 7: rule look in action?
- 42:15Speaker 3: How does it?
- 42:16Speaker 7: How does this feel an action? And I would think
- 42:19Speaker 7: also from if I'm an opener, understandpoint, because it's going
- 42:21Speaker 7: to become a time and there's going to be another strike,
- 42:23Speaker 7: there's gonna be another walk out, there's gonna be another
- 42:26Speaker 7: stop at your play, like there's about to be with
- 42:28Speaker 7: the referees potentially, and now we can say, okay, y'all
- 42:31Speaker 7: want to stop, y'all come over here and play. So
- 42:34Speaker 7: so this league it's needed now. Again, I think it's
- 42:38Speaker 7: going to take the owners a while to catch up
- 42:40Speaker 7: financially to actually invest in it.
- 42:42Speaker 3: But after a.
- 42:43Speaker 7: Few years, if they seeing it as sustainable, they're gonna say, okay,
- 42:47Speaker 7: we're gonna start figuring out some sort of partnership where
- 42:49Speaker 7: there's a direct team.
- 42:50Speaker 3: The team, or it's just league the league. But they
- 42:53Speaker 3: have to have this league. We need it. I want to.
- 42:57Speaker 4: I want to.
- 42:59Speaker 3: We don't have time. I got you to Final four,
- 43:01Speaker 3: but I want to fight this. It get so let
- 43:04Speaker 3: us take a quick break and we'll be right back.

- 44:01Speaker 7: All right, so I guess we'll put a pin in
- 44:03Speaker 7: that argument. All right, so we do have to come
- 44:07Speaker 7: back to that. We got a uh, we got the
- 44:09Speaker 7: final four coming up. We had a crazy game Buzzer
- 44:13Speaker 7: beat It with two historic programs, Duke and Yukon Yukon
- 44:17Speaker 7: was able to pull off that. I mean, that was
- 44:19Speaker 7: what a darning shot that from the lower There's.
- 44:22Speaker 6: A clip that only lasts like a minute from the
- 44:24Speaker 6: announcer of the Yukon Huskies. If we want to listen
- 44:27Speaker 6: to it, it's really pretty cool.
- 44:29Speaker 3: Yeah, left to go.
- 44:31Speaker 10: They're trying to steal and pluck this thing away on
- 44:33Speaker 10: the inbound pass cam boozer not gonna be found right away?
- 44:36Speaker 10: What's going on here? Where is the foul? Oh my goodness,
- 44:39Speaker 10: it's gonna be stolen. This could be for the win.
- 44:42Speaker 10: Shot from downtown.
- 44:44Speaker 11: Oh my god, this shot point to go seven day,
- 44:49Speaker 11: three to seven, they too, Yo, can't just nailed a bucket?
- 44:53Speaker 11: Oh my goodness, point three left to go.
- 44:56Speaker 3: You have got to be kidding me.
- 44:59Speaker 5: Now, I was like my porch last night.
- 45:02Speaker 3: You know, sometimes there's there are there are people who
- 45:05Speaker 3: just will do that. They'll get there that excitement. That
- 45:09Speaker 3: was excitement right there. Yeah, that's what it's all about. Yeah, Yeah,
- 45:14Speaker 3: I think. I think when you when you start talking
- 45:16Speaker 3: about like march madness and you start talking about games
- 45:18Speaker 3: like that, I don't know how you don't grow an
- 45:23Speaker 3: audience because you got folks who are like mad that
- 45:26Speaker 3: they didn't see it, you know, and they're they're they're
- 45:28Speaker 3: trying to catch it on the ESPN. They're trying to
- 45:30Speaker 3: catch it for wherever they can find it. That is
- 45:33Speaker 3: really what you start.
- 45:34Speaker 6: And I bet you, Hollis you probably like tuned in
- 45:37Speaker 6: and out of that game because it was such a
- 45:39Speaker 6: like a big deficit. Like me, they really had the
- 45:42Speaker 6: what was it nineteen points they came back from I
- 45:44Speaker 6: think yeah, And like.
- 45:45Speaker 3: I said, it's just a testament of Yukon.
- 45:46Speaker 7: Like I love coach Hurley, I love what how you know,
- 45:49Speaker 7: he's bringing that old school sort of gritty, grimy sort.
- 45:53Speaker 3: Of never never, never love never, You're never out, You're
- 45:57Speaker 3: never out.
- 45:58Speaker 7: So so in the final four, we got Illinois for
- 46:01Speaker 7: number was that number three Illinois versus number two Yukon
- 46:05Speaker 7: And then we got two number one, so we got
- 46:07Speaker 7: Michigan in Arizona.
- 46:08Speaker 3: So who we got going to the.
- 46:10Speaker 5: Chip let me go first? Which which game? Both?
- 46:14Speaker 3: So yeah, we got to Illinois Yukon.
- 46:16Speaker 6: Okay, uh well uh you know, Yukon seeking what their
- 46:19Speaker 6: third title in four seasons, and after that win, I mean,
- 46:22Speaker 6: they've just got the magic, they got the ma jugger ones.
- 46:24Speaker 5: So I'm going I'm going to.
- 46:27Speaker 7: Mission. I'll go Yukon on that too. Michigan Arizona. M
- 46:30Speaker 7: M my man was talking a little smack. He was saying,
- 46:33Speaker 7: this is the best Michigan team ever.
- 46:36Speaker 5: Arizona's good.
- 46:37Speaker 3: I'm gonna I'm gonna lean the Arizona Arizona.
- 46:40Speaker 6: They've got a nice blend of like their depth, Like
- 46:43Speaker 6: they've got like a veteran and freshman, like a good combination.
- 46:47Speaker 5: So I mean, I'm thinking Arizona.
- 46:49Speaker 3: That's he's going the other way. I think I'm going Michigan.
- 46:52Speaker 3: I'll go Michigan.
- 46:53Speaker 4: I'll go.
- 46:54Speaker 3: Let me just quickly, I know we gotta go.
- 46:56Speaker 7: But uh, ship, you think the NBA should do something
- 46:59Speaker 7: like this worst kind of a one game elimination instead
- 47:01Speaker 7: of the long John.
- 47:03Speaker 5: Would be all over that, Yeah, all over it. I'm
- 47:06Speaker 5: with you on like, but they wouldn't make the money.
- 47:08Speaker 3: Yeah, but I'm right, and that's the professional sports thing
- 47:11Speaker 3: is making the money. Yeah yeah, yeah, But it would
- 47:14Speaker 3: be exciting if you had like a you know, a
- 47:16Speaker 3: two month long you know, NBA championships.
- 47:19Speaker 5: I think it would be super cool. So, uh, I
- 47:21Speaker 5: think we have a few minutes.
- 47:22Speaker 6: We wanted to mention talk a little bit about a
- 47:27Speaker 6: player that tragically passed away that was one of Carl's teammates.
- 47:33Speaker 6: He was a member of the Ring of Honor for
- 47:36Speaker 6: the Minnesota Vikings, was inducted in twenty thirteen. His name
- 47:41Speaker 6: is Joey Browner. I'll just give a little background on him,
- 47:45Speaker 6: and then I'm gonna let Carl talk about, you know,
- 47:48Speaker 6: what it was like to play with him.
- 47:52Speaker 4: He was a.
- 47:53Speaker 6: Minnesota Viking from nineteen eighty three to nineteen ninety one.
- 47:56Speaker 6: He had six consecutive Pro Bowls. He was drafted nineteenth
- 48:02Speaker 6: overall in eighty three. And please correct me if I'm wrong, Carl,
- 48:06Speaker 6: and he's you know, you had that reputation of being
- 48:08Speaker 6: a hard hitting They caught him a samurai style of safety.
- 48:13Speaker 5: So tell us about what it was like to play
- 48:15Speaker 5: with him, Carl.
- 48:15Speaker 3: He had he had a black belt. Yeah, so that
- 48:20Speaker 3: that's that is some of that. The most mild manner
- 48:26Speaker 3: dude that you can You can imagine if you see
- 48:29Speaker 3: him off the off the field, and it's and really
- 48:33Speaker 3: it's and I can see him and and and see
- 48:39Speaker 3: myself speaking to him and him saying, hey, seely, how
- 48:42Speaker 3: you doing? You know, and I don't know if I
- 48:45Speaker 3: ever really heard his voice loud, I never really seen him.
- 48:52Speaker 3: I've seen him react, and like I said, he he
- 48:56Speaker 3: had all kinds of belts and JIU JITPSU and all
- 48:59Speaker 3: that kind of stuff like so he was he was
- 49:02Speaker 3: not the guy that you wanted to to mess with.
- 49:05Speaker 3: He wasn't the guy you wanted to get into a
- 49:06Speaker 3: fight with. It but it was it was.
- 49:09Speaker 4: It was.
- 49:10Speaker 3: It was you have all of this, but he had
- 49:12Speaker 3: the personality that was just a calmness. And on the field,
- 49:19Speaker 3: he's the only player that I have ever played with
- 49:23Speaker 3: where the entire defense is solely built around him. Wow
- 49:32Speaker 3: him as a strong safety. Anybody who's played a strong
- 49:35Speaker 3: safety position or know anything about defense, Joey was never
- 49:39Speaker 3: in that position. He was standing on the line of scrimmage,
- 49:44Speaker 3: inside sometimes of the tight end, over top of a
- 49:48Speaker 3: tackle and he's gonna he's gonna make a play. He's
- 49:53Speaker 3: going in at the quarterback. We're gonna put somebody else
- 49:56Speaker 3: in that drop because he wasn't He wasn't a drop guy.
- 50:00Speaker 3: He was a guy that was so athletic you had
- 50:03Speaker 3: he had to be a dB, but it was so
- 50:06Speaker 3: physical that you had to put him somewhere where he
- 50:09Speaker 3: could have contact.
- 50:11Speaker 4: So that's.
- 50:12Speaker 5: Yeah, yeah, that's what it sounds like.
- 50:15Speaker 3: He's just he and and he didn't even he didn't
- 50:20Speaker 3: even come across at any given time that I've known,
- 50:26Speaker 3: did he ever even flicker like he thought he was
- 50:30Speaker 3: a great player?
- 50:31Speaker 5: Wow?
- 50:32Speaker 3: Like he never all the Pro Bowls, that the the
- 50:37Speaker 3: Pro Bowls that I was with him, like he's the
- 50:40Speaker 3: he's the best dude. You would not when you think
- 50:45Speaker 3: of somebody being the best dudent and and being in
- 50:48Speaker 3: the Pro Bowl, being in Hawaii, you're thinking, like, you know,
- 50:51Speaker 3: you you're gonna be the big dog.
- 50:52Speaker 5: Right, nothing, not not any of that.
- 50:58Speaker 3: I don't think again, I don't just stop. Yes, okay,
- 51:03Speaker 3: like you if you walked by him, Hey see Lee,
- 51:08Speaker 3: how you doing? Man, I'm good, joe you know, become
- 51:11Speaker 3: Joey b. I'm good joeybe. If we were gonna have
- 51:15Speaker 3: an argument, it was gonna sound like that he he
- 51:19Speaker 3: wasn't gonna do anything. And I seen him throw his
- 51:23Speaker 3: hands up a couple of times, you know, and because
- 51:26Speaker 3: he's fighting with a lineman and an offensive lineman, and
- 51:30Speaker 3: you make the case that they didn't really want that.
- 51:34Speaker 4: He was.
- 51:35Speaker 3: He was the kind of guy that's so quiet. So
- 51:39Speaker 3: again sixty three, sixty four, two thirty and four or.
- 51:44Speaker 6: Five kind of guy and in fact really.
- 51:48Speaker 3: Quick, yes, who wants to deal with that? And it's
- 51:51Speaker 3: just so, it's just so it's so gut riching wrenching
- 51:54Speaker 3: that you know, I have to think that he's gone.
- 51:59Speaker 3: And I can remember the last time that I saw him.
- 52:01Speaker 3: He didn't like he wasn't sure like who I was,
- 52:04Speaker 3: because like I walked up and I was like, hey, Joeb,
- 52:06Speaker 3: how you doing.
- 52:07Speaker 4: Man?
- 52:07Speaker 3: He was like, oh, I'm good. And I was like,
- 52:10Speaker 3: cee lee man, oh yeah, yeah yeah, and wrapped up
- 52:13Speaker 3: and that was That was quite a few years ago.
- 52:16Speaker 3: And then even in his history, his family's history, you know,
- 52:21Speaker 3: there's a ton of athletes in that in that family,
- 52:24Speaker 3: and man, there's there's like I think there's two or
- 52:26Speaker 3: three I think have all passed, not the whole the
- 52:29Speaker 3: whole group hasn't passed, but there's I think there's been
- 52:32Speaker 3: three other ones that have brothers that have passed. And
- 52:36Speaker 3: it's just and it's just too young, man. It's just
- 52:39Speaker 3: it's just it's just hard to it's hard to fathom,
- 52:43Speaker 3: it's hard to go back. It's gonna be hard to
- 52:46Speaker 3: go back to Minnesota and and go to the facility
- 52:49Speaker 3: and and you know, see his pictures and stuff like that,
- 52:53Speaker 3: and and and him not be there. And I don't know,
- 52:57Speaker 3: it's just gonna be It's gonna be tough, man. But
- 52:59Speaker 3: I wish his family well, and you know, I hope
- 53:02Speaker 3: he just rest in peace and just know that he
- 53:05Speaker 3: was a He was a truly loved guy in spite
- 53:09Speaker 3: of his complexities and as a person. I don't know
- 53:13Speaker 3: that he thought about that. I don't know if he
- 53:16Speaker 3: was aware of how people felt about him and even
- 53:19Speaker 3: how they ranked him. I don't think ranking him as
- 53:22Speaker 3: the best strong safety you know ever inviting history in
- 53:27Speaker 3: my book, and could compete against anybody in the league.
- 53:31Speaker 3: I just don't know if it even mattered to him.
- 53:35Speaker 6: So so I've read some things that some people believe
- 53:38Speaker 6: that he belongs in Canton.
- 53:39Speaker 5: Do you do you do you feel that way?
- 53:41Speaker 3: Or I'll say it this way. If there's a strong
- 53:45Speaker 3: safety in camp, Joey Brown belongs there. Okay, I don't
- 53:50Speaker 3: care who he is. Yeah, there's just no there's just
- 53:54Speaker 3: there's no way of how he played right, whether it's
- 54:00Speaker 3: the physicality of it, whether it's the speed of it.
- 54:05Speaker 3: He could do anything. He covered tight ends, he blistered,
- 54:10Speaker 3: he beat linemen.
- 54:13Speaker 5: So we we have some homework to do. We need
- 54:14Speaker 5: to go back and watch some clips.
- 54:16Speaker 3: Of Yeah, I'm telling you he is a special kind
- 54:22Speaker 3: of dude. And I'll say this and Hollis you you
- 54:27Speaker 3: you'll understand this clearly. No matter what the defense was,
- 54:34Speaker 3: it didn't matter to him what the defense really was.
- 54:37Speaker 3: He was going to make a play. He could have
- 54:39Speaker 3: been totally he could have been totally in the wrong position,
- 54:45Speaker 3: but he was going to make a play.
- 54:47Speaker 4: Yeah.
- 54:49Speaker 3: I played against a couple again, not not at that level,
- 54:52Speaker 3: but a couple of dudes I played with wo like
- 54:53Speaker 3: like that.
- 54:54Speaker 7: They just line up kind of anywhere and they play
- 54:58Speaker 7: kind of inside and outside. The con finds of the
- 55:00Speaker 7: structure of the defense. Yes, and they're able to like
- 55:04Speaker 7: make a play like that. Those are always just the
- 55:06Speaker 7: most irritating guys because you can never get a read
- 55:09Speaker 7: on strong safety goes to the strong side of the
- 55:13Speaker 7: field and he's supposed to have the containment outside of
- 55:16Speaker 7: the outside back or if he doesn't have to drop,
- 55:20Speaker 7: we put Joey. They put Joey on the line, put
- 55:22Speaker 7: the tight end or to and put the tackle on
- 55:25Speaker 7: the outside. He could cover the tight end over him,
- 55:29Speaker 7: and and and just and just rush.
- 55:32Speaker 3: It's like who's and who's gonna stop us?
- 55:33Speaker 7: It's like those those are the type of guys that
- 55:35Speaker 7: are just and again it's it's hard to find guys
- 55:38Speaker 7: like this, but they're so instinctial. Yes, and on defense
- 55:42Speaker 7: is different because, like I said, you have to you're
- 55:45Speaker 7: playing within the confines of the scheme, but you're something
- 55:48Speaker 7: you're playing out of it offensively, you don't necessarily have
- 55:51Speaker 7: that liberty.
- 55:52Speaker 3: Because you have to kind of run the play and
- 55:55Speaker 3: you can deviate, Yeah, you can deviate.
- 55:57Speaker 7: But you're not necessarily just going with outside of the scope.
- 56:01Speaker 7: So when you have those guys who can play almost simultaneously,
- 56:04Speaker 7: play inside and outside, you know, the confines of the
- 56:08Speaker 7: of the scheme, those are really really special guys. Like
- 56:11Speaker 7: I'm saying, I would compare them to Troy Polamalo.
- 56:15Speaker 3: So, like I said, I wish his family the best
- 56:18Speaker 3: and Joey rest in peace. Man, I love you and
- 56:22Speaker 3: we'll go from here.
- 56:23Speaker 4: All right.
- 56:24Speaker 3: We are out of here, ladies and gentlemen.
- 56:25Speaker 7: Thank you
