- 0:06Speaker 1: And we're back to the Craigway Show.
- 0:09Speaker 2: Have a message for Craig, share it by using the
- 0:12Speaker 2: talkback feature on the Iheartsradio.
- 0:14Speaker 3: Wapp here on a Thursday afternoon, headed toward long worn
- 0:20Speaker 3: basketball tonight at Moody Center against New Mexico State, we'll
- 0:23Speaker 3: hear from head coach Rodney Terry.
- 0:24Speaker 1: In a few minutes.
- 0:25Speaker 3: I mentioned Travis Hunter. Today was named the AP Player
- 0:32Speaker 3: of the Year. In AP College Football Player of the Year,
- 0:35Speaker 3: he received twenty six out of forty three votes from
- 0:40Speaker 3: the panel of the AP top twenty five voters. Ashton Genty,
- 0:45Speaker 3: the Boise State tailback from Frisco, Texas out of Frisco
- 0:50Speaker 3: lone Star, finished second. He had sixteen votes. Cam Scataboo,
- 0:54Speaker 3: who I mentioned earlier, the Arizona State running back, picked
- 0:56Speaker 3: up one vote as well. But I guess you know
- 1:01Speaker 3: the biggest thing about Travis Hunter and why I think
- 1:03Speaker 3: he's gonna win the Heisman Trophy is being the two
- 1:06Speaker 3: way player that throwback. You know, he can be a receiver,
- 1:10Speaker 3: he can be a lockdown corner. He's on the field
- 1:13Speaker 3: a lot. I get all that. I just said that
- 1:15Speaker 3: I don't think he was the offensive player of the
- 1:18Speaker 3: year because the offensive numbers his offensive numbers, and neither
- 1:23Speaker 3: were Shader Sanders numbers. I don't think we're more impressive
- 1:29Speaker 3: and valuable to the team than Skataboos was for Arizona State.
- 1:34Speaker 3: But respect the numbers and the overall package of what
- 1:39Speaker 3: Travis Hunter presents, I understand why he's probably gonna win
- 1:43Speaker 3: the Heisman even though Ashton Genty is on a record
- 1:46Speaker 3: setting tear of what he's doing for Boise State. I
- 1:49Speaker 3: also get that probably a lot of Heisman voters came
- 1:52Speaker 3: were probably looking this going, yeah, you know, but who
- 1:57Speaker 3: did he do it against? You know, Yeah, there was
- 1:59Speaker 3: the game against a Well. Other than that, I mean,
- 2:03Speaker 3: he still had all of these two hundred yard rushing games.
- 2:06Speaker 3: I mean, it's what Greg Davis used to say when
- 2:09Speaker 3: he was the Texas offensive coordinator when Colt McCoy would
- 2:12Speaker 3: complete like eleven consecutive passes. He goes, if you complete
- 2:15Speaker 3: eleven in a row against air, you're doing good. So
- 2:18Speaker 3: I think Ashton Genty's numbers are impressive enough, even though
- 2:22Speaker 3: they probably aren't enough to impress enough people who look
- 2:25Speaker 3: at the bigger, overall big conference picture.
- 2:29Speaker 4: Yeah, I think Genty probably deserves I don't know. You
- 2:33Speaker 4: could argue for the Walter Camp Award. Yeah, obviously the
- 2:37Speaker 4: Doak Walker Award. If you want to throw in the
- 2:40Speaker 4: Maxwell Ward, sure, but the Heisman, and this always gets
- 2:43Speaker 4: back to, okay, what is the you know award supposed
- 2:46Speaker 4: to mean, Like with the MVP, it's the most valuable player,
- 2:50Speaker 4: right that to the team, to the league. You know,
- 2:52Speaker 4: it always up for debate for Heisman. I think what
- 2:54Speaker 4: we're seeing with Travis Hunter, it just hasn't been done.
- 2:57Speaker 4: We've never seen a player play both sides of the ball.
- 3:01Speaker 4: And if you want to say Desmon Howard, sure, but
- 3:04Speaker 4: I mean he had what like his offensive snaps the
- 3:07Speaker 4: year he won the Heisman were under fifty right, Yeah,
- 3:11Speaker 4: so he was a tremendous player. Travis Hunter. He plays
- 3:13Speaker 4: both sides the entire game. He's you know, he's had
- 3:16Speaker 4: multiple games with a touchdown in interception there and there
- 3:19Speaker 4: won't be another player like him, I don't think for
- 3:22Speaker 4: a long time. So if I had, if I had
- 3:23Speaker 4: a Heisman vote, I would vote for Travis Hunter. With
- 3:26Speaker 4: the Maxwell, Walter Camp, Doak Walker, I would vote for
- 3:29Speaker 4: Ashton gent D. But Skattaboy's got a good argument as well.
- 3:32Speaker 3: Yeah, yeah, he does. I uh, I think a better
- 3:35Speaker 3: comparison with Travis Hunter would be Charles Woodson.
- 3:38Speaker 5: When yeah, sorry, not has Howard Woodson?
- 3:40Speaker 3: Okay, all right, well Howard.
- 3:42Speaker 5: Has Yeah, but Woodson was the one that he got.
- 3:45Speaker 3: All both sides. Yeah, uh huh. I would have probably
- 3:48Speaker 3: said Woodson. But remember when he won it, everybody thought
- 3:51Speaker 3: Peyton Manning was going to get it. Yeah, and he
- 3:52Speaker 3: didn't get it. All right, let's hear some more from
- 3:55Speaker 3: Longhorns head basketball chrich Rodney Terry heard from him last hour,
- 3:59Speaker 3: first part of this leading up to tonight's game with
- 4:02Speaker 3: New Mexico State, and also the state of his basketball
- 4:06Speaker 3: team right now, So more from our te.
- 4:10Speaker 6: Good morning, our tee. Hey appreciate the punctuality as always.
- 4:13Speaker 6: I like it. You know, Tremont Mark's been back, you know,
- 4:17Speaker 6: a couple of weeks now. You know, what can you
- 4:20Speaker 6: guys do to get him going offensively? And do you
- 4:23Speaker 6: see him at some point? It's kind of that third option,
- 4:26Speaker 6: you know, behind Columa and Trey.
- 4:28Speaker 1: Yes, Thomas, really good question.
- 4:32Speaker 2: You know, I think again, anytime you miss four weeks,
- 4:36Speaker 2: you know, and in particular in Treymon's case, you know,
- 4:40Speaker 2: Treymont didn't have much of a summer because he had
- 4:43Speaker 2: things he had to get done from an academic standpoint,
- 4:46Speaker 2: and then and then he gets into the early part
- 4:48Speaker 2: of the fall and he missed it seven days of
- 4:51Speaker 2: practice and it's hurt the first day of practice with
- 4:53Speaker 2: the growing and so you have a very limited time
- 4:58Speaker 2: with him over time with this grew. So I think
- 5:03Speaker 2: there was a time prior to just to his injury
- 5:06Speaker 2: that I thought that he had made up a lot
- 5:08Speaker 2: of ground in terms of hall heart.
- 5:10Speaker 1: We needed him to play on both ends of the floor.
- 5:13Speaker 2: I think once he had that injury, just like anything,
- 5:16Speaker 2: it's gonna take some time for him to come back
- 5:18Speaker 2: and get back in the floor and get going again
- 5:20Speaker 2: a little bit. I do think he had his best
- 5:23Speaker 2: practice today after our Ucome game, where I thought he
- 5:26Speaker 2: played with the.
- 5:28Speaker 1: Kind of energy and activity that we need him.
- 5:30Speaker 2: To play with, play in and play out, whether it
- 5:33Speaker 2: be on offensive defense. I thought he was really, really good.
- 5:36Speaker 2: I thought it was his best practice of the year.
- 5:38Speaker 2: And if we can get him to a point to
- 5:41Speaker 2: where he's consistently doing that, you know, every day, it's
- 5:46Speaker 2: no doubt in my mind that he could definitely be
- 5:48Speaker 2: a guy that gives us a lot of scoring ability
- 5:54Speaker 2: and possibly a third score to go with those guys
- 5:57Speaker 2: that are big, consistent night in the night out to
- 5:59Speaker 2: this point right now.
- 6:00Speaker 1: Coach Cherry, good afternoon.
- 6:03Speaker 7: So when you think about the longevity of this team
- 6:06Speaker 7: and going deep into in March and what's needed to
- 6:10Speaker 7: go and compete at that high level, is there any
- 6:14Speaker 7: emphasis today on several of the players scoring double digits?
- 6:19Speaker 7: Is that even a I know you're a defense minded,
- 6:22Speaker 7: but does double digits ever play into that And because
- 6:25Speaker 7: it's gonna probably be required to get deep into the March.
- 6:29Speaker 1: No, for sure, Terry, I think again a great point.
- 6:31Speaker 2: You know, we still obviously have a really good New
- 6:34Speaker 2: Mexico State team to play tomorrow.
- 6:36Speaker 1: I think that, you know, I've.
- 6:38Speaker 2: Got a lot of respect for it, for their coach
- 6:40Speaker 2: Jason Hood, and how hard they play it, how hard
- 6:44Speaker 2: they compete. Uh, he's got power five size and he's
- 6:48Speaker 2: got guys that are older players. So we'll have our
- 6:50Speaker 2: hands full come tomorrow with the quality ball club coming
- 6:54Speaker 2: in here.
- 6:55Speaker 1: But but to your point.
- 6:58Speaker 2: I think the thing that I've tried to rest to
- 7:00Speaker 2: our guys right now over the course of the next
- 7:03Speaker 2: week and a half that we have with them prior
- 7:05Speaker 2: to our break and then coming back even prior to
- 7:08Speaker 2: conference play, is that we've got to We've got to
- 7:11Speaker 2: have a great sense of urgency. We don't have to
- 7:14Speaker 2: play perfect on offense. I'm never gonna ask guys to
- 7:18Speaker 2: play perfect on defense, but we have to have a
- 7:21Speaker 2: sense of urgency on how hard we play every possession.
- 7:24Speaker 2: And I think if you can get your team to
- 7:26Speaker 2: compete at that kind of level on every possession, I
- 7:31Speaker 2: think it gives youself a chance from an offensive standpoint.
- 7:36Speaker 2: You know, again, I think we're growing, We'll continue to grow,
- 7:40Speaker 2: but we spend time working on it. You know, after
- 7:42Speaker 2: the Ucon game, in terms of our pace, our pace
- 7:45Speaker 2: is not where it needs to be right now. From
- 7:47Speaker 2: an offensive standpoint, our cutting is not worth where it
- 7:51Speaker 2: needs to be at at this point right now. And
- 7:54Speaker 2: again I put the ownership on myself in that regards,
- 7:56Speaker 2: and I said to our guys, I'm gonna do a
- 7:58Speaker 2: better job of teaching and work with you guys.
- 8:00Speaker 1: Or how hard we have to cut.
- 8:02Speaker 2: Spacing we have to have in the ball movement, player movement,
- 8:06Speaker 2: we have to have offensive because I do believe that
- 8:09Speaker 2: we can be a really good offensive team.
- 8:11Speaker 1: I think we're a fast team. I think when we're.
- 8:13Speaker 2: Able to get out and play and transition, I think
- 8:16Speaker 2: it helps our defense. I think it helps I think
- 8:20Speaker 2: it helps us play with urgency.
- 8:21Speaker 1: Because now we got a little pop about us and stuff.
- 8:24Speaker 2: But I do think we're a team that can score
- 8:26Speaker 2: the basketball, and we'll be to score the basketball.
- 8:28Speaker 1: And we've got a.
- 8:29Speaker 2: Gauntlet of a league this year where every night you're
- 8:32Speaker 2: gonna have to bring your a game on offense and
- 8:34Speaker 2: defense and try to sit down and play with a
- 8:37Speaker 2: high sense of urgency for forty minutes.
- 8:41Speaker 8: Hey, coach, I wanted to talk to you a little
- 8:43Speaker 8: bit about your rotation and how do you come up
- 8:46Speaker 8: with the mindset of how many I mean, which guys
- 8:48Speaker 8: are gonna play with each other on the court and
- 8:52Speaker 8: finding out who is the proper match for each other
- 8:55Speaker 8: depending on the matchup. I guess it plays a lot
- 8:57Speaker 8: into it. But just trying to find that rhythm them
- 9:00Speaker 8: that you were talking about that you are looking for
- 9:02Speaker 8: right now, well, I.
- 9:04Speaker 1: Think it's been a work in progress.
- 9:05Speaker 2: I think, you know, we started the year with the lineup,
- 9:10Speaker 2: you know, our first scrimmage against TCU, uh, the lineup
- 9:13Speaker 2: that we're starting right now, you know, and we got
- 9:15Speaker 2: off to a great start first couple, first game, and
- 9:18Speaker 2: then and then we have an injury and a setback
- 9:20Speaker 2: with Traymont for four for four weeks. And so Kendall
- 9:24Speaker 2: did a nice job getting in and doing what he
- 9:26Speaker 2: does in.
- 9:27Speaker 1: Terms of being a start in his role.
- 9:29Speaker 3: Uh.
- 9:29Speaker 1: And then and then you get Treymont back. You have
- 9:32Speaker 1: Jason Kent, who started out.
- 9:34Speaker 2: The year, uh, you know, coming in and being a
- 9:37Speaker 2: guy that we can ly off the bench. Uh, as
- 9:39Speaker 2: our first big off the bench. And uh, he gets
- 9:43Speaker 2: injured and uh, you know we're still work working on
- 9:46Speaker 2: you know, his recovery and opportunity to be to come
- 9:49Speaker 2: back and hopefully join us at some point as well
- 9:51Speaker 2: and everything. But you talk about your rotation, you know,
- 9:54Speaker 2: we had a pretty good rotation with the way we
- 9:57Speaker 2: we had it going at one point, but we still
- 9:59Speaker 2: haven't had you know, give a take our top nine
- 10:02Speaker 2: nine guys that you know available to play this season
- 10:06Speaker 2: in a game. Yet so uh to me and in
- 10:09Speaker 2: my mind, you know, you you have two guards, you
- 10:12Speaker 2: have two bigs, and and then you have a fifth
- 10:14Speaker 2: and sixth guy past that point ready to go.
- 10:17Speaker 1: Uh and everything.
- 10:18Speaker 2: So you know, we're the kind of team that likes
- 10:20Speaker 2: to pressure up the four, so we could play ten
- 10:22Speaker 2: guys uh as well, But we haven't been able to
- 10:26Speaker 2: really kind of sell into that because we haven't had
- 10:28Speaker 2: everybody all available in every game to this point right now.
- 10:33Speaker 2: So you know, we get you know, Trey mont back
- 10:36Speaker 2: and we lose kid.
- 10:37Speaker 1: You know.
- 10:37Speaker 2: So, you know, Ken's a valuable guy to our team.
- 10:40Speaker 2: He's a guy that has a lot of experience. He's
- 10:43Speaker 2: a guy that's a cerebral player.
- 10:45Speaker 3: Uh.
- 10:45Speaker 1: He's a physical body. Uh. He rebounds, and.
- 10:49Speaker 2: He's one of the one of the elite cutters in
- 10:52Speaker 2: all of college basketball. He could cut twice on the
- 10:55Speaker 2: office of possession and make our office possession look really good.
- 10:59Speaker 2: We'll miss that from him right now. You know, he
- 11:01Speaker 2: can get a second chance opportunity on the glass for us.
- 11:05Speaker 2: He can make a three point shop for us.
- 11:06Speaker 1: You know.
- 11:07Speaker 2: But but but you lose that a little bit in
- 11:09Speaker 2: terms of that rotation, and you know, so you know,
- 11:13Speaker 2: to be honest with you, in games, sometimes it kind
- 11:16Speaker 2: of just depends.
- 11:16Speaker 1: We tried to go with a small line up the
- 11:18Speaker 1: other day and it wasn't very good for us.
- 11:20Speaker 2: That we had to go to a big lineup the
- 11:22Speaker 2: other day, off the bench, away from our first unit.
- 11:26Speaker 1: Uh and everything.
- 11:26Speaker 2: So you know, hopefully, you know, Lord blessed, we'll have
- 11:30Speaker 2: everybody you know available at someone where we can settle
- 11:33Speaker 2: in on that really good rotation the way we want it.
- 11:36Speaker 2: You know, in a perfect world, you love to be
- 11:38Speaker 2: a to have them. You know, we were too deep
- 11:41Speaker 2: in every position, you know. But but but we're not
- 11:44Speaker 2: right now, We're still down one.
- 11:46Speaker 3: The comments of Rodney Terry, the Long Horns head coach,
- 11:49Speaker 3: with that media assumed that he had yesterday leading into
- 11:52Speaker 3: tonight's matchup against New Mexico State. Uh, the Long Horns
- 11:56Speaker 3: and Aggies New Mexico State aggies, I think there is
- 12:00Speaker 3: in Division one athletics. Let me think about this for
- 12:04Speaker 3: a moment. Help me if I'm if I'm incorrect on
- 12:07Speaker 3: this camp. I think there are four sets of aggies
- 12:13Speaker 3: in Division one basketball. Can you name the four?
- 12:16Speaker 5: Utah State, A and M, New Mexico.
- 12:19Speaker 3: State and and and so what's the fourth? Their Division
- 12:22Speaker 3: one in basketball, but not in football football they're in
- 12:26Speaker 3: HBCU mmm mmmm, that's a really good trivia question from
- 12:33Speaker 3: my hometown.
- 12:37Speaker 7: U n C G.
- 12:38Speaker 5: No, your hometown.
- 12:40Speaker 3: Yes, from Greensboro, North Carolina. But it's not UNCG. There's
- 12:43Speaker 3: another school in there. It's an HBCU.
- 12:47Speaker 5: What's the what's the other school in un CG. It's
- 12:49Speaker 5: not Guildford.
- 12:50Speaker 3: No, they're Division three. Hit me with it, North Carolina
- 12:53Speaker 3: A and T T the aggies of A and T
- 12:57Speaker 3: blue and gold. But they're they're there. It's it's funny
- 13:00Speaker 3: looking at the different the mascots. They're all different. Especially
- 13:09Speaker 3: I've kind of forgotten what you toss State.
- 13:11Speaker 5: There's a U that's that you lost to you?
- 13:14Speaker 3: New Mexico State has this dude and a cowboy hat
- 13:17Speaker 3: with a pistol out. So that's the closest thing.
- 13:19Speaker 5: Ain't him as a dog?
- 13:21Speaker 4: Reason?
- 13:22Speaker 1: No, they've got that.
- 13:23Speaker 3: What's that what's the character's name, Old Sarge, the one
- 13:26Speaker 3: with the trooper hat on? Uh for the A and
- 13:28Speaker 3: M logo, there's that. I saw a lot of when
- 13:30Speaker 3: I was in college station for the football game. I
- 13:33Speaker 3: saw a lot of folks wearing hoodies. You know how
- 13:36Speaker 3: long worn fans have taken them wearing these hoodies with
- 13:38Speaker 3: angry bevo on it, the screaming bevo or or some
- 13:41Speaker 3: of the other belos. Yeah, well, I saw a lot
- 13:44Speaker 3: of Aggies wearing a maroon hoodie that had the Old
- 13:48Speaker 3: Sarge logo on it, where he's got the where he's
- 13:50Speaker 3: got the hat on the old Trooper and he's got
- 13:52Speaker 3: he's got the hat on. Uh, there's that. So it's
- 13:55Speaker 3: a little bit different. New Mexico State dude just looks
- 13:57Speaker 3: like a rancher or a cowboy or or whatever. And
- 14:00Speaker 3: he's got his pistol drawn as well. North Carolina A
- 14:03Speaker 3: and T. They're Aggie. It's a bulldog. It kind of
- 14:06Speaker 3: looks like the Georgia Bulldog to be exact. If it
- 14:09Speaker 3: really means if you look at the logos, it's similar
- 14:12Speaker 3: to the Georgia Bulldog. So the bulldog is their logo,
- 14:16Speaker 3: but it's yeah, it's North Carolina A and T. So
- 14:19Speaker 3: there's four sets of Aggies there on that. This particular
- 14:24Speaker 3: Aggie team that goes in at four and five actually
- 14:30Speaker 3: has a better per average scoring total than its opponent,
- 14:36Speaker 3: which means in their losses they've taken some lopsided losses obviously,
- 14:40Speaker 3: but they out rebound their opponents. They do commit more turnovers,
- 14:45Speaker 3: and they're a middle of the road free throw shooting team,
- 14:51Speaker 3: and they're you know, not a real good field goal Percentageam,
- 14:55Speaker 3: but they could shoot the three a little bit, So
- 14:57Speaker 3: that's something that the log worms w have to beful of.
- 15:00Speaker 3: It's good to see the continued process and progress of
- 15:05Speaker 3: certain guys on this team, and I think of three
- 15:08Speaker 3: in particular, Jordan Pope, Tremon Mark and Julian Larry. Now
- 15:14Speaker 3: we know what Kenda Weaver can do. We know obviously
- 15:17Speaker 3: Trey Johnson has shown what he can do. He's averaging
- 15:19Speaker 3: number twenty one a game. We know what Arthur Kaluma
- 15:22Speaker 3: is capable of, and we know clearly what Cayden Shederick
- 15:27Speaker 3: can do. And even Zara kon Yema has made some
- 15:29Speaker 3: strides off of that. But the deal with looking at
- 15:35Speaker 3: Tremon Mark, who got the late start because of the
- 15:37Speaker 3: ankle sprain, Jordan Pope has really stepped up his game
- 15:40Speaker 3: last couple of ball games, and Julian Larry we saw
- 15:43Speaker 3: him do the same thing. He played an important part
- 15:45Speaker 3: in the winning Raleigh over North Carolina State. So keep
- 15:48Speaker 3: an eye on those guys as well tonight. Well, they
- 15:51Speaker 3: have more coming up here on Sports Radio AM thirteen
- 15:53Speaker 3: under his own of the iHeartRadio app
