- 1:27Unfortunately you couldn't make it to the promised land still in
- 1:30the desert 104 Flames. That maybe when this airs, you

- 1:38Israel. This airs.
- 1:41Yes I'll probably be in Israel if we're planning on dropping
- 1:45the first week of February. Yeah.
- 1:48And looking forward man. I'm excited.
- 1:50There's I just got off a call just a minute ago.
- 1:53With Marcus our tour guide, our leader of the trip and 38
- 1:57pastors. 38, men of us are going.
- 2:00It's going to be awesome. He said they had a goal of 20
- 2:04and their ending with 38, which is pretty credible.
- 2:06Pretty incredible, and looking it parking and get into Atlanta
- 2:11meeting up with some guys before I leave out and so, just so
- 2:15excited about that excited about seeing the, the the Bible come
- 2:19to life. Been able to experience that in
- 2:22a 3D World of been able to go to caesarea Philippi, it'll go to
- 2:26Jordan, be able to go to Bethlehem and and Calvary and
- 2:30all the places that we're going to go to.
- 2:32I'm just really, really stoked. Really talked about it.
- 2:35And can't wait to report back and talk to you guys about
- 2:38what's happened. And what we learned there, I'll
- 2:41be reporting our church as well about the things that we'll be
- 2:45seeing there and so just really excited.
- 2:47Wish, John could go with us but, you know, this big-time senior
- 2:50pastor guys, they don't have time for us lowlifes to go to
- 2:53Israel. So they just have to continue to
- 2:55minister where they're at right John.
- 2:57Well, come on. Well, John that's how we roll
- 3:01John you just got out of a pretty cool time.
- 3:03Two weeks, tell us about what you got to church.
- 3:07My church graciously gave it gave me a sabbatical and so we
- 3:10Had my family, we had two weeks off of everything and it was
- 3:15fun. We have a good time and really
- 3:17enjoyed the time off and yeah, just it's been a lot of good
- 3:22time with the family makes made some memories and so looking
- 3:27forward to getting back at it and back into the swing of
- 3:31things and and doing Ministry and that kind of thing.
- 3:34But well, when we were talking about, we are the the for
- 3:39Freedom podcast Take that name from Galatians. 5:1 is for
- 3:44Freedom, that Christ has set. You free, do not be entangled
- 3:46again with the Yoke of bondage. And the purpose of the statement
- 3:51of the podcast is, is the bring the freedom of the gospel for
- 3:55everyday, Christians, with everyday issues and our
- 3:59Authority, our source that we use to do.
- 4:02So, is our belief on the sufficiency of scripture and
- 4:09James and I are both In the biblical Counseling World.
- 4:12I'm in a CBC biblical counsellor, as long as a pastor,
- 4:15James is finishing up his certification with the Institute
- 4:20of biblical counseling and discipleship.
- 4:22And so we're going to be what our structure is going to be is
- 4:27we want to cover topics each month and so we're going to have
- 4:31a series of episodes on that topic where James and I will
- 4:34tackle the subject from and and talk a little bit about it and
- 4:38then we want to get some interviews.
- 4:41With some that have done some work in this topic, maybe
- 4:44produce materials, or that type of thing.
- 4:47And so, the topic for You want to list all eight topics that
- 4:53were gonna be doing well, I have to bring it up.
- 4:55You got me when I'm not ready. I've got a right here, I'll know
- 4:57some things, don't change. Yes.
- 4:59Yeah. All right.
- 5:01Go ahead James. Those Joe doakes February.
- 5:04We're looking at marriage and that's what we'll be taking the
- 5:07four weeks. Three to four weeks is what
- 5:08we're looking at. And the having some interviews
- 5:11talking through what marriage is today, we will specifically be
- 5:14talking to Ephesians me and John will then in March will be
- 5:19talking about Renting and an April anxiety.
- 5:23John, what about May June July? Well, I thought you had it.
- 5:27I didn't bring it all. Sorry.
- 5:28Okay, the meher? We got mental, disorders.
- 5:30I thought you brought it up and you were ready for me.
- 5:32Maybe we'll be doing mental disorders.
- 5:34June will be doing sexual sins. July will be taken off its our
- 5:39normal break in July is our busiest month.
- 5:41Being John's busiest month. August will be addictions.
- 5:45September will be depression and October is going to be abuse and
- 5:49then we'll take the holiday break of November and December
- 5:52off as well. So that's our year plan for I
- 5:54guess, John will this be considered season?
- 5:56Wreath, we did Seasons or so, if it's a way that I structured, it
- 6:00was like each time. We took a break.
- 6:02We started the new season. This would be like season six or
- 6:04something like that. Yes, been doing it for two
- 6:06years, a little over two years. Maybe no.
- 6:08We're start. We're just maybe starting to
- 6:10three running your Irene. Yes, dear three, maybe, I don't
- 6:14know, I don't know. I have to go back and look but
- 6:16June of twenty. Twenty was when we started and
- 6:18where in January of twenty twenty-three as recording this.
- 6:22But so, we're going to do marriage this month, and we're
- 6:25going to be talking about marriage.
- 6:26Ridge. And before we get started, let
- 6:29me say this that our approach to this subject today is with the
- 6:35attitude of looking at biblical help and biblical understanding
- 6:42of marriage. Without we're not going to
- 6:46approach it because there's so much Nuance.
- 6:48If you have abuse going on, we're going to do a month
- 6:52talking about abuse. And in that month, we're going
- 6:54to do an episode on domestic abuse.
- 6:57So understand that when we are saying, the things that we're
- 6:59saying we're saying in the context of a marriage situation,
- 7:03this not experiencing abuse. And we just want to couch that
- 7:07right now because I think that some people will do well
- 7:09objective. Well, what about this Joy?
- 7:10What about this situation? Well, we don't want to continue
- 7:13to stop and go and stop and go and having to Nuance all this
- 7:17stuff and do never, really get anything said if we're trying to
- 7:19cover it all. And so we're approaching this
- 7:23with the understanding that if this marriage situation.
- 7:27There's not abuse present. This is this is the God's
- 7:33message because Truth for that. And so we're going to but one of
- 7:37the things we want to cover in this episode, we're going to get
- 7:40into some interviews later, but we want to start with sort of
- 7:48basic Foundation of that. And so we want to sort of talk
- 7:52about, you know, the classic marriage.
- 7:54Passage. What's the classic marriage
- 7:55passage they Everybody goes to in scripture, if he's 15.
- 8:00A fission is five. Okay, so we're going to go
- 8:02there, so just go ahead and get ready.
- 8:04That's where we're going to be. You guessed it?
- 8:06We're going to cover fusions five.
- 8:07You've probably heard several messages from Ephesians 5.
- 8:11I've been I've preached through efficient, I'm finishing up the
- 8:13book of Ephesians right now at our church.
- 8:15So I've been in Ephesians 5 for a long time.
- 8:17And my study and it's so before we do that, though, we're going
- 8:24to, we're going to talk about the foundation.
- 8:26Marriage in the marriage roles but I want to cover three things
- 8:28that we need to understand that we're approaching this with the
- 8:32foundation of your marriage. You think about that you have to
- 8:35have the foundation to get right.
- 8:36You know there was a house that was built here, late a few years
- 8:40back and our County and the person built the house and then
- 8:45put the thing and put renters in it and then try to get by
- 8:51without getting an inspection. Well, somebody that worked for
- 8:55the county of by notice the house was there said, I don't
- 8:59think we've checked that so looked it up.
- 9:01Sure enough. They didn't check it.
- 9:02So they came out and checked it and they found that the guys
- 9:07Foundation was off. You know, what they made him do
- 9:11pair of the whole thing down, he had to move his renters out and
- 9:14he had to tear the whole thing down fix the foundation and
- 9:18start back and that is important my dad's a builder and he always
- 9:22stressed to me the importance of a foundation.
- 9:24And he showed me this one time with him, Building and he this
- 9:27building was there for about 20 years and he said you see this
- 9:30crack going up all the way through the corner of the
- 9:33building, reaching to the roof. And I said, yeah.
- 9:35And it was concrete and he said that crack is there because the
- 9:41foundation was off the foundation, when the foundation
- 9:45is off, when the foundation is wrong, it will cause all kinds
- 9:48of problems over time through there.
- 9:52We're talking about a three-fold foundation, Dave Harvey, and his
- 9:55book when Center say I do is talks about this, in his first
- 9:58chapter. And he says this.
- 9:59That first of all, we have a foundation of the Bible.
- 10:03And if you're new to our podcast, then you understand
- 10:06that we want to help you, understand, we believe in the
- 10:10inerrancy of scripture, the authority of scripture, the
- 10:12sufficiency of scripture, we believe, the Bible is God's word
- 10:18and handled accurately interpreted rightly.
- 10:22Lee and is authoritative for us today.
- 10:27If you're not new to our podcast, this is not something
- 10:30that we haven't said many times before.
- 10:33So, the Bible scripture is where we find that James who created
- 10:38marriage, well, the that was created by God, the very
- 10:41beginning, it's a not a man-made concept, it's not a government
- 10:45ordained concept is a concept that God created between a man
- 10:49and a woman. And that God was the it was the
- 10:53initiator of marriage. He created us for companionship
- 10:57God created it and he gave the instructions to it in his word
- 11:02so we go to his word to find out how marriage should look okay?
- 11:08So Foundation number one, is that Foundation, number two is
- 11:10the gospel, alright, the gospel, the the death burial
- 11:14Resurrection, the fact that Jesus Christ came died,
- 11:17according to the scriptures was buried and raised, according to
- 11:21the scriptures. The idea of the Gospel, the good
- 11:24news of Jesus, Christ's sacrifice on the cross, for
- 11:27Sinners, atoning for centers. Okay, is a foundation for that
- 11:32because when you get into a marriage, what do you have?
- 11:35You have two centers coming together and what is the, what
- 11:39is the solution for those two centers?
- 11:41When ever since starts getting in the way it is, the
- 11:44application of the Gospel. Meaning that what reconciles
- 11:49Sinners to God? It is God.
- 11:52God's grace, his mercy and Christ's sacrifice.
- 11:57What can reconcile two centers together within a home?
- 12:00It is applying that Grace to each other sacrificing for each
- 12:05other. Exhibiting humility, and mercy
- 12:10to each other. Okay.
- 12:13So Foundation number two, is the gospel and Foundation.
- 12:16Number three is the glory of God.
- 12:19And this is an issue that I think is very important because
- 12:22your marriage is not for your happiness.
- 12:26Marriage is not intended for your happiness.
- 12:28It's not intended for you to be happy.
- 12:30Happiness and joy can be a byproduct of your marriage.
- 12:34It's not the ultimate goal, the ultimate goal, not just in life,
- 12:39but also in the marriage is God's glory.
- 12:43And the Westminster Confession says that / Vestal to this, I
- 12:46love it. It's the chief end of man is to
- 12:49glorify God and enjoy him forever.
- 12:52And so the chief end of those things, those Pursuits that we
- 12:56put our life to is the glory of God.
- 13:00Whatever you do, whether you eat or drink, or whatever you do, do
- 13:04all to the glory of God. Okay?
- 13:08And so that's our foundation. So with that Foundation, we take
- 13:11that Foundation about marriage and then we move to today, we
- 13:15just want to cover. We're going to talk about this
- 13:17text and Ephesians chapter 5 and what Paul gives instructions
- 13:22here about husbands and wives in the Of marriage.
- 13:26James, why don't you read the text for us?
- 13:29Okay, you'll read all 22:33. Yes, I've got it here.
- 13:35The new King James says, wives submit yourselves unto your own
- 13:37husband's as to the Lord, for the husband is the head of the
- 13:41wife. As also Christ is the head of
- 13:43the church and he is the savior of the body, therefore, just as
- 13:48the church is subject to Christ, so let the wives be to their own
- 13:52husband's in everything. Husbands love your wives.
- 13:56Just as Christ, also loved the church and gave himself for her
- 14:00Christ, gave himself for her so that he might sanctify and
- 14:05cleanse her. With the washing of the word
- 14:08that he might present her to himself as a glorious church not
- 14:12having spot or wrinkle or any such blemished that you should
- 14:16be holy and without blemish. So husband's ought to love their
- 14:20own wives as their own bodies. He loves his wife, loves
- 14:23himself, Elf for no one ever hated his own flesh, but
- 14:27nourishes, and cherishes it just as the Lord does the church.
- 14:32Verse 34, we are members of his body of his flesh and his bones.
- 14:36For this reason shall a man leave his father and mother be
- 14:39joined to his wife and the two shall become one flesh.
- 14:44This is a great mystery that I speak concerning Christ in the
- 14:47church. Nevertheless, Let each one of
- 14:49you in particular. So love his own wife, as himself
- 14:53and let the wife see that she respects her husband, Okay, so
- 14:59that's a hot fire passage in today's culture.
- 15:02That is a passage that does not fly and today's culture has some
- 15:07hard truths in it has some hard passages but one thing that we
- 15:12want to remember is that we cannot divorce this text from
- 15:15its context and I know some people out there screaming.
- 15:17Yeah you started 22. You should have started at verse
- 15:2021 and I'm going to say, you know what, we should have
- 15:22started at the beginning of chapter 4.
- 15:26Yeah. Well at the verse 1 of chapter,
- 15:27Chapter one, you know? But what you have to understand
- 15:30the entire context of the book Paul is writing to this people
- 15:34and let me go quick. I can be long-winded on this
- 15:36because I've been in this book for entire year, but Paul's
- 15:40talking to this sends a letter to this church.
- 15:43And he sets off, start starting with giving them Doctrine.
- 15:47Giving them theology. Chapters 1 through 3 is a
- 15:50chapter one, is a starting off introduction of, doxology, of
- 15:53praise to God and then he gives them the doctrine of the Gospel.
- 15:56Visions to you, Dead in sins. But God who is rich in Mercy by
- 16:00faith. You have spent by Grace, you
- 16:02have been saved through faith in Chapter 2 and then he begins to
- 16:05lay out how that should look in the context of the local church.
- 16:08The outworking of the Gospel he says because there's no longer
- 16:12Gentile and Jew your now together.
- 16:14And then he says, the in chapter 3 says, God gave spiritual gifts
- 16:18for the church for you to carry out and he's gifted the church.
- 16:21Now with all of that doctrine of the way.
- 16:24In chapter 3, he goes to chapter 4 and he says, now, here's how
- 16:26you should live. Because of this doctrine of the
- 16:29gospel, because the truth of Jesus Christ that's been applied
- 16:32to your life. This is how you live walk worthy
- 16:36in a matter of where with you've been called, all right?
- 16:39So walk worthy in this manner and he walks through chapter
- 16:42chapter 4 and he says, things like, put off the old man, put
- 16:46on the new man and be renewed in the spirit of your mind and he
- 16:51talks about, you know, don't steal anymore but give don't let
- 16:55the sun go down upon Your anger don't have any malice or
- 17:02bitterness or clamor among you but be kind one to another
- 17:05tender-hearted forgiving one another.
- 17:08He goes on the chapter 5 be imitators of God, Walk in love,
- 17:12these are all things that should be characteristic of Believers
- 17:16in the church and he goes through chapter 5 and he's
- 17:20working through this and he gets to this part where he says this
- 17:22in verse 18 don't get drunk with wine.
- 17:26There's your Off. What is the put on?
- 17:29Be filled with the spirit? Or we could say it this way,
- 17:31don't be controlled by any other man-made substance be controlled
- 17:37by God's holy spirit. Now, what does it look like to
- 17:42be controlled by the holy spirit of God?
- 17:44Well, he explains that the next three, versus three things.
- 17:47You sing. You have a spiritual song.
- 17:49You have a song of God in your heart, you have Thanksgiving as
- 17:52a heart attitude and you are submitting one to another.
- 17:57Other now, here's, here's the thing that people scream about
- 18:01who our submission is supposed to go both ways.
- 18:03I agree, submission goes both ways and I'm, we're going to
- 18:06explain how that works. But what you have to understand
- 18:09is just not in verse 21 is part of the context.
- 18:11You have to connect verse 21 to the context of everything he's
- 18:14talking about, the local church, and he's saying that in the
- 18:17local church, the attitude that you should have between
- 18:19Believers is a submission towards all of each other.
- 18:23Was this means that every woman submits to Man in the church.
- 18:28No. Does this mean every man's to
- 18:31missed? Everybody know, it's talking
- 18:33about a, a spiritual heart attitude of humility of love and
- 18:39serving one another. And then from verse 21, he says
- 18:43that submitting yourselves, that's plural.
- 18:46One to another. And then from verse 21 to 22, he
- 18:48says, I'm going to get specific in three different areas.
- 18:50Let me get super practical. He's already been practical.
- 18:54Now he says, let me get super practical and so he gives three
- 18:57Relationships and many scholars believe, because he gives these
- 19:00three specific relationships. These are the three
- 19:02relationships that the Ephesian church was struggling with the
- 19:05relationship between husband and wives, the relationship between
- 19:10parents and children and the relationship between slaves and
- 19:13Masters. Yeah.
- 19:15Okay. Now we're not going to get into
- 19:17the nitty-gritty, the the Steak Pit which is dealing with
- 19:21slavery and the Bible and that kind of thing.
- 19:23Okay. We're not getting to that but
- 19:25that is what he's saying here in that.
- 19:26So we're To cover where you get specific in husbands and wives.
- 19:31So there's our context and he comes to verse 22, and he says,
- 19:33now, specifically, wives submit to your own husband's as to the
- 19:40Lord. Now, even in that part right
- 19:41there, he says this is he saying submit to every man No, he's
- 19:46saying submit to your own husband's.
- 19:48The only man. She should be submitting to is
- 19:52her own husband, okay? But we have a Firebrand James we
- 19:57have a we have a just like right now we're making people mad.
- 20:01What is the word? What is the reason here?
- 20:04It's saying their submission. It exists.
- 20:09Yeah. Because of the Lord unto the
- 20:11Lord. Yeah yeah.
- 20:13Yeah they can you continue on. How are you sir?
- 20:15Supposed to submit as if this guy's a great husband.
- 20:18No, because we're not, we're not great husbands, we're all
- 20:22sinful. Yeah, exactly, that's what I
- 20:24said to beginning. You're bringing two centers
- 20:26together, that husband's a sinner, it's not the perfect
- 20:28guy. He's not going to treat you the
- 20:30right way all the time. Now again, we're not talking
- 20:35about abusive situations, that's another conversation for another
- 20:37day. We're talking about just
- 20:39everyday, just being a bonehead, all right.
- 20:43You submit, how? As to the Lord.
- 20:47Yeah, because your submission is really to, who is it to your
- 20:51husband? No, it's to God and, you know,
- 20:57as I was studying through this little bit John, I and you
- 20:59alluded to it a little bit but one commentator made this
- 21:03statement. He said wives have most most,
- 21:08he's given a general statement here, he said but a lot of times
- 21:10it's easy for a woman in the sense of the wife's here to be
- 21:15submissive to a Boss in a work setting that is a man but it is
- 21:20harder for a woman to in the situation here to give this
- 21:24submission to her own husband in her own home.
- 21:27And he says that the Lord considers it more important at
- 21:31the home than anywhere else. To give this submission to give
- 21:34this honor to the husband, as unto the Lord, and to make sure
- 21:39that we are given the submission to our husband's as unto the
- 21:44Lord, for the Holiness that we just spoke about.
- 21:46Out. Yeah, so you can't get away from
- 21:49the text, the text is clear. If you believe in scripture the
- 21:53scripture speaks and the scripture is God's word.
- 21:57This is so incredibly clear. Who's the subject who's that
- 22:01talking to is talking specifically to wives that
- 22:03labels? That what is the action that's
- 22:06been asked to do submission to who two husbands, but to your
- 22:11own husband, but how as to the Lord now Let's talk before we
- 22:17move on over to Nick, we're going to give the husband's a
- 22:19good run for their money too. Right.
- 22:21All right. But before we move onto their
- 22:22let's define submission. A lot of people like to well
- 22:25what do you mean by submit? What do you mean by submit?
- 22:28Well the words for some it is is HIPAA tasso or Hoopa tasso?
- 22:33It's a great term. Now the interesting thing about
- 22:35it in verse 22 is it does it is not actually there.
- 22:39In the Greek text, the word who protest of for submit is not
- 22:42actually there and everybody says wasted.
- 22:44Then why is it there? That's a mistranslation is It's
- 22:46not a mistranslation. We get the word from the
- 22:49previous verse, in verse 21 submitting to one another.
- 22:52That is the firm word, upit a so whenever you get to the Greek,
- 22:56the Greek construction is sort of saying this just like that
- 23:01wives do the same thing to your own husbands to avoid confusion
- 23:06the translators put in submit that is not a wrongdoing.
- 23:10That is not a mistranslation. That is completely getting ethic
- 23:14the The understanding of the text in that.
- 23:18So what does it mean? It means to subordinate to obey
- 23:24to arrange oneself under the term was used in the Greek, more
- 23:29in military settings, Signifying rank.
- 23:33All right. It does not mean I'm going to
- 23:36read this quote here by Mac Sanders.
- 23:40It does not mean inferiority in any way.
- 23:44It is not a matter of worth intelligence Talent or anything
- 23:49else. It is, simply a structure, God
- 23:53has established a structure in which he has also placed
- 23:57himself. Jesus is in submission to the
- 24:00father, of course. Responding, passage that talks
- 24:03about the same subject headship. Biblical headship is First
- 24:07Corinthians 11 and how does it rank that?
- 24:10It says that God is the head of Christ Christ, the head of man
- 24:16and man the head of the wife. Do you think that Jesus Is
- 24:21inferior. You think that Jesus is somehow
- 24:24treated as less than because he's in submission to the
- 24:27father? No.
- 24:29And so the Viewpoint from scripture that we see that
- 24:32submission is from the wives to the husband's is likened.
- 24:35In First Corinthians 11, as the submission of Christ is to the
- 24:39father. And what does God do?
- 24:41All through scripture? Now we're going at the husband's
- 24:43a little bit here. What does God do?
- 24:44All through scripture with Christ.
- 24:47He exalts Christ. Yeah.
- 24:50And and that kind of thing. So so this is is not that, that
- 24:55kind of thing. And also we see in Galatians
- 24:57that this is not of equal Worth or value because it says that
- 25:02there's no Jew nor Greek in Christ, there's no male nor
- 25:05female and that's not talking about that, but that's not
- 25:08talking about doing away with the structure.
- 25:10That's not a contradiction. It's saying that men are not are
- 25:14not above women. Women are not less than than
- 25:18men. But in this specific area, They
- 25:23are, they're equal in God's eyes.
- 25:26But in this specific area, there is a structure God has put in
- 25:30place. Yeah, well, and even if you look
- 25:32down, just two verses John and verse 24, it gives another clear
- 25:36illustration of this. And he says, as Christ is as the
- 25:39church is subject to Christ, as the church should be doing, what
- 25:43Christ wants it to do in the sense of ministering, the gospel
- 25:47to unbelievers and developing Disciples of Christ.
- 25:51In the same way the wives should be subject to their own husbands
- 25:54and everything. There's the church is subject to
- 25:57Christ wives would be subject to the church and it uses a
- 26:00different term there. You know, it doesn't use to me.
- 26:02That just uses the word subject, under in the ability of
- 26:06following after what the direction of the church should
- 26:09be the same direction of what that house should be as ran by
- 26:13the husband in that sense. It's not that relationship in
- 26:17that illustration, the Theology of Christ and the church, we're
- 26:21going to see how Christ treats the Ouch, when we get to talking
- 26:24about the husbands. So this is not something that is
- 26:27supposed to be a slave slavery, a ball and chain type of view
- 26:34towards marriage. And a lot of the problems we
- 26:36have with understanding biblical headship and biblical submission
- 26:41and quite honestly don't know. There's terms out there for it.
- 26:43Galit arianism complementarianism, there's hard
- 26:47complementarianism soft. I don't like any of those terms
- 26:50James. I don't like any of those terms
- 26:51because they are I end up over time getting so nuanced that you
- 26:55don't know what someone is saying.
- 26:56Whenever they say, this is where they're at.
- 26:58Yeah I just prefer the term biblical headship biblical
- 27:02submission but the reason why it's such a mess, a convoluted
- 27:06mess. Is we go back to Genesis.
- 27:09What happened in Genesis, you have the fall, you have the
- 27:15Disobedience of Adam and Eve. And then the curse is given.
- 27:19And if you go to that text, what is the curse given to the woman?
- 27:23At the curse given to the woman. As this, that her desire shall
- 27:26be for her husband and her husband will rule over her so
- 27:29much, misunderstanding has come from that text.
- 27:31And that is this one. Misunderstanding was, absolutely
- 27:34laughable. Is that a misunderstanding of
- 27:37that Texas that occurred in college Joan?
- 27:39Yeah, that the desire of the woman will be that the woman
- 27:42will part of her curse is that she's going to desire to have
- 27:45sex with her husband all the time. that's actually been
- 27:49perpetrated in and commentaries and stuff and theologians which
- 27:52is so insanely hilarious that that can't be the case because I
- 27:57mean quite honestly I just does a reality, Amen, brother.
- 28:02Sometimes it's some stages maybe, but that's and, is that a
- 28:06bad thing? No, no, okay.
- 28:10The curse is this on. The woman's part is that her
- 28:13desire shall be for husband. Now, here's another
- 28:16misunderstanding of how this text has been mishandled.
- 28:19It says that the, the woman's desire will be over her towards
- 28:23her husband. And the understanding is this,
- 28:25that her desire is going to be to rule over her husband.
- 28:29That is the proper understanding of the Hebrew, but another
- 28:32misunderstanding is cometh the next part of that, but the
- 28:34husband will rule over her and that is this That her curse is
- 28:38that she's going to want the control.
- 28:40She's going to want the authority, but the husband is
- 28:42going to rule over her and the whole Authority and that's part
- 28:44of her curse. That's not what it's saying is
- 28:48saying that part of the woman's curse is that she's going to
- 28:51have the desire to rule and have authority over her husband.
- 28:56And that part of that curse is that that husband is not going
- 28:59to be loving, and he's going to want to rule and control over
- 29:03her both aspects. Are aspects of the curse and the
- 29:09fall and neither are what God desires and a marriage.
- 29:14What God desires is respect and submission from the wife, love
- 29:21and care and protection from the husband, the husband doesn't
- 29:26rule over. And so a lot of places have
- 29:29misunderstood the roles of men and women in marriage by saying
- 29:34the woman's going to want to. But no, you need to rule over.
- 29:37Her her, that's part of the curse.
- 29:40You don't rule over her. You love her.
- 29:44How Christ loved the church? Now, again, it's hard for me to
- 29:47cover any of this without jumping over into the husband's
- 29:51issue all the time. But so we have those things from
- 29:56from the wives, and James mentioned, the relationship for
- 30:00the church and Christ. And so also wives should submit
- 30:05and everything. I think we need to deal with
- 30:06this before we leave the wives. So also, at the end of verse,
- 30:10T4. So also wives should submit in
- 30:12everything to their husband. There's another hard one.
- 30:15That's a hard one. Say, wait a second, is that
- 30:18saying that I'm supposed to submit and everything?
- 30:22All right, this is the idea that the text is conveying that in
- 30:26every area of Life. The husband is responsible for
- 30:30the leadership of the home. Now, he can delegate to that,
- 30:34but when the husband makes a decision, all right, that
- 30:38submission is supposed to be there, okay?
- 30:41So is there ever a time where the wife Does not submit and my
- 30:46answer to that is yes, yes. All right, if the husband is
- 30:52trying to get the wife to do something, that is unbiblical
- 30:56that is against God's order. What it, what is another area
- 31:00that we are, told that we're supposed to submit to government
- 31:04and you go to acts to the book of Acts and you have Peter John
- 31:09And they're telling them that they should be doing this and
- 31:13not sharing the gospel. And John says it is better for
- 31:18us to obey God rather than man. And so there we get a principle
- 31:26that we follow the structures in the authority structures that
- 31:29God has given us in our life except for whenever they come in
- 31:32contradiction to what God has already said or established
- 31:37husbands that try to get their wives to engage in extramarital
- 31:42sex or In pornography together, that is that's sinful and she
- 31:49should not follow him in that to cheat on taxes, to do these
- 31:52types of things husbands that that want to be abusive to their
- 31:58wives. They should not stand for that,
- 32:00okay? They should not go along with
- 32:02that that are not expected to submit into those types of
- 32:06situations because they are to follow God rather than okay.
- 32:14So, What? I thought it was interesting, as
- 32:18well, right before we move. Are we moving on to the
- 32:19husband's at this point? Yeah.
- 32:21Okay. What I thought was you know, a
- 32:24lot of people, you said it. It's a fire topic when we talk
- 32:28about the wise submitting, but in this very passage, there's
- 32:32only there's three verses specifically talking to the
- 32:34women but then we've got nine other verses that talk about the
- 32:38what the husbands and I think it shows the the importance there
- 32:42yet Paul is writing here to the wives.
- 32:45Yes, but he's given three times as much information to the
- 32:48husbands of how we should lead, and how we should submit even
- 32:53ourselves unto the Lord in that sense.
- 32:56And so, as I studied through that, and even thought about
- 32:59that this week last week, this week, it was really eye-opening
- 33:04to me, as a husband of this thought of how we do love our
- 33:08wives, of how our lives in return.
- 33:10Get to do that back to us. And so I thought it was very
- 33:13interesting. In through this, as we do, talk
- 33:17about that word. Everything is a discipline unto,
- 33:20the Lord unto the husband. In that sense.
- 33:23Let me say something as it concerns the wives role in
- 33:26submission to the husbands. So any men that are listening
- 33:30this nowhere in scripture, are you ever instructed to make your
- 33:37wife submit? Absolutely.
- 33:40No, you say, well, my wife's not submitting, she won't cement,
- 33:43she refuses to be okay. You do your thing.
- 33:47You pray for her. You be the husband.
- 33:49God wants you to be? Yeah.
- 33:52You don't ever know the words, you're my wife.
- 33:55You should submit probably shouldn't come out of your
- 33:57mouth. Yeah, if you have to tell your
- 34:01wife to submit, you're doing a terrible job as a husband.
- 34:04Yeah. Okay.
- 34:06Again back at verse 22 as unto the Lord, not unto James and
- 34:12John not unto the, it's unto the Lord.
- 34:15Is she submitting? Yep, another aspect of this too
- 34:20is. There's a different Nuance
- 34:22between the way that it's given to.
- 34:25So, following the context, we give we have the instructions to
- 34:28wives. And husbands, we have the
- 34:29instructions to children and parents and we have the
- 34:31instruction to slaves. And Masters children are said to
- 34:35obey their parents and slaves. And verse 5 through 9 are said
- 34:39to obey their masters. There is a different word used
- 34:44for children and mass and slaves, that it is for wives.
- 34:51You there's a similarity of the structure that you see in those
- 34:56those types of situations. But there's a different word
- 34:58used for wives than it is for it's the same word for children
- 35:02and and slaves obey. But it's not the same word for
- 35:06women for wives and that is because the submission is
- 35:10understood in the Greek term is a voluntary submission.
- 35:14It's about you willingly do this.
- 35:18Yeah, because as James has said over and over, it's as to the
- 35:23Lord, your responsibility is to God.
- 35:29Okay. The last thing it says two wives
- 35:31is at the end of verse 33. It says Let each one of you love
- 35:34him. What was wife as himself, see
- 35:36that the wife that she respects her husband?
- 35:40And this is the other aspect so submission and then respect, T'.
- 35:44And so God in scripture is asking, you is commanding you to
- 35:50respect your husband, okay? So that is the wives, and we're
- 35:56going to head to the husbands found that good grace, found
- 36:05that healing and the tears fall down my face.
