- 0:00What a precious time in worship this morning.
- 0:03Thank you for including your voices today.
- 0:06Would you please meet me in the second letter to Timothy in
- 0:09chapter 2? Beginning in verse 14, in our
- 0:13Bibles. So we open up God's word
- 0:19together. 2nd Timothy Chapter 2 beginning in verse 14.
- 0:31Remind them of these things in charge them before.
- 0:34God not to quarrel About Words, which does no good, but only
- 0:40ruins the hearers, do your best to present yourself to God as
- 0:44one approved. A worker who has no need to be
- 0:48ashamed. Rightly handling, the word of
- 0:51truth, but avoid irreverent babble.
- 0:56For it will lead people into more and more ungodliness.
- 1:00And their talk will spread like gangrene among them are
- 1:04Himalayas and Phi leaders, who have swerved from the truth.
- 1:09Saying that the resurrection has already happened, they are
- 1:13upsetting the faith of some, let's pray.
- 1:19Or this is your word, we acknowledge it as a supreme
- 1:21authority, we acknowledge it as perfect.
- 1:25We acknowledge it as god-breathed and that it is
- 1:29sufficient to make us Godly. We ask Lord that you would help
- 1:34us understand what you're saying in these verses and that they
- 1:37would apply to our lives. Give us your heart.
- 1:41Give us the grace to know your will for us.
- 1:45We ask these things in the name of Jesus.
- 1:47We pray. Amen.
- 1:50There are many hooks in this world that have the ability to
- 1:57lure any Soul into destruction. Both in this life and in the
- 2:03Life to Come. And unfortunately, these
- 2:07spiritual dangers are not few but they are many.
- 2:11And so, vast and extensive are these threats.
- 2:15That many of them may not even be in the radar of our
- 2:18understanding. Nonetheless, we have to
- 2:23understand all that God has given us concerning warnings.
- 2:27And there are some professing believers who may not recognize
- 2:29how particular practices put them in others in great
- 2:32Jeopardy. And what are the warnings that
- 2:36you and I are about to explore this morning.
- 2:38Apply to you are relatable to you.
- 2:41It doesn't really matter because it is our duty to identify as
- 2:46many Lethal things as possible. So that we would not be caught
- 2:52unaware by the enemy of our souls.
- 2:54We must be familiar. We must be studied and we must
- 2:57be prepared less at any time in your own life, or even in the
- 3:01life of this church. We would see these looming has
- 3:04It's affecting the faith of even some. and the menacing tricks
- 3:10that we are about to discover this morning, do not have to
- 3:14deal with the danger of lust. Or Pride or divisiveness or
- 3:21anger or jealousy? They focus on the misguided
- 3:27discourse. Of various kinds more
- 3:31specifically, arguing debating and even teaching that is not
- 3:39aligned with God's word or God's ways.
- 3:44And before we continue we might fall into the temptation to
- 3:48think. This is really not a pliable to
- 3:51me. This is not something applicable
- 3:52to me. I don't think I really need to
- 3:54really pay attention and I would say no, you must pay attention.
- 3:58look at Verse 18 Again, very quickly as we look at the last
- 4:01phrase, they are upsetting the faith of some Paul brings up
- 4:07that there are certain behavior that is disturbing certain
- 4:10Christians within the Church of Ephesus, that's where Pastor Tim
- 4:14was was leading And that was enough, just a handful even if
- 4:18people within that church were being disturbed.
- 4:21And Paul saw it necessary to intervene, just one part of the
- 4:26body was being affected. And Paul says, this has to be
- 4:28dealt with from the leadership. This has to be dealt with as a
- 4:31whole entire congregation. What's the point that I'm trying
- 4:35to make? If one part of your body was in
- 4:39pain, if one part of your body was injured Afflicted in some
- 4:43way, would you not take care of it?
- 4:45We do not give it great attention, even if your finger
- 4:49was out of place, you would do all that, you can to make sure
- 4:53that it was restored to perfect health and like manner as the
- 4:56body of Jesus Christ, we are one, we are connected and we
- 5:01must be fully aware and alert even if some even if one member
- 5:05is affected in some way, It is our duty.
- 5:08We are accountable to one another.
- 5:10And so, when we look at these things, consider not just a
- 5:13danger to yourself, but perhaps a danger to others in which you
- 5:17must also be aware of, there are three things we have to avoid.
- 5:22These are subtle practices. These might not be so dangerous
- 5:25to the immediate. I but they are in fact,
- 5:27dangerous, and we must avoid these things.
- 5:31And the first thing that is mentioned is in verse 14.
- 5:34We are told here that we are to not quarrel about words.
- 5:41The first thing to avoid is to not give in to things that are
- 5:46not sensual. Paul says, remind them who are
- 5:51them the people in his church, the people in his congregation,
- 5:54the people in Ephesus, remind them not to quarrel about
- 5:59certain words. And what's amazing here is that
- 6:02this command is so serious and Paul's mine more importantly,
- 6:06the holy spirit's mind that Paul does something that he often
- 6:09doesn't do before. He gives a command He invokes
- 6:13the presence of God. Does he not say it charge them
- 6:17before God charge them before the presence of the Lord?
- 6:23And why is he doing this? Because before he's about to
- 6:25give this instruction, he is trying to remind the people of
- 6:29God, of a truth that we often forget.
- 6:31And that is this, God is in the midst.
- 6:36God is surgically supervising and taking into account whether
- 6:41or not we are taking seriously, any of his commands.
- 6:46And what Paul is trying to do by saying charge them before, God,
- 6:51Is to provoke a fresh fear of the Lord and the people.
- 6:57God Is Watching You. And the believer.
- 7:01Must be continually aware of The Unbroken, attendance of God in
- 7:07all of our activity. Including our conversation.
- 7:12And I can tell you this from the scripture, and I can even tell
- 7:16you this, if this means anything from personal experience in
- 7:18Ministry, That one of the greatest ingredients in order
- 7:23for a church to be clean. Spiritually and healthy is for
- 7:28every single individual of that church.
- 7:31To be convinced that God is in the midst.
- 7:35There's an interesting verse in Acts 9:31, where we were told
- 7:38about the church and walking in the fear of the Lord.
- 7:42And in the comfort of the Holy Spirit, it multiplied walking in
- 7:47the fear of the Lord. What does it mean to walk to do
- 7:50all life to be in conduct in the fear of the Lord?
- 7:54And in the comfort of the Holy Spirit?
- 7:56It multiplied. That was the thing that set it
- 7:58for growth, the fear of the Lord, something that Satan has
- 8:01made us afraid of And I can tell you that the opposite of this
- 8:06truth is just as effective, negatively, listen, all you need
- 8:12as you're going to find out by the end of this message.
- 8:15Is one person in a church to not be convinced that God is in the
- 8:19midst to not be convinced that God is taken to account.
- 8:21What you say, what you do to not be convinced that God is
- 8:25watching for Havoc to ensue and for chaos to erupt just one just
- 8:33one. But let me tell you something.
- 8:34In case, you're that person that you don't believe that God is
- 8:36watching at all times. You're in for the shock of your
- 8:40life. when you stand before, the judge of the Earth, And how you
- 8:46dealt with his bride, you're in for the shock of your life,
- 8:51brother, you're in the shock of your life sister.
- 8:57Charge them. Before God.
- 9:01And what this Paul want, the people of God to realize that he
- 9:05is observing. Do not quarrel about words.
- 9:10He's listening. And this may be a little
- 9:13difficult to interpret because what this Paul mean by words, is
- 9:18he talking about? Empty words, he's talking about
- 9:20theological terms, is you talking about controversial,
- 9:23spiritual subjects? Is he talking about gray areas
- 9:26that are not so clear in the Bible?
- 9:28What does he mean by words? Here's one thing that we can be
- 9:32secure about Paul is not implying.
- 9:36That Christians should have a relaxed attitude about the
- 9:40precise meaning of the Bible. In fact, Paul himself, gets
- 9:46caught up in words. Sometimes you don't have to turn
- 9:49there, but let me read this to you as a reference and Galatians
- 9:52when Paul is defending, the gospel of grace, from Heretics
- 9:56that are coming into the churches of galatia and trying
- 9:58to say, you know, Jesus died on the cross but it's Plus your
- 10:02efforts, he's making a defense and he uses this argument out of
- 10:06many arguments and Galatians 3:16.
- 10:08Now, the promises were made to Abraham and to his offspring.
- 10:12Now, look, he's quoting Genesis, it does not say, and to his
- 10:16offsprings referring to many, but referring to one and to your
- 10:20Offspring, who is Christ. So he takes one word from the
- 10:26Old Testament to make a case that The Offspring is Jesus
- 10:30Christ. So that's somebody getting
- 10:32caught up in words. That's somebody who is who's
- 10:35fighting with words defending a word in the Bible.
- 10:41There's an appropriate application.
- 10:43Listen of getting caught up in specifics, in the Bible.
- 10:48Of being serious about Doctrine, especially when it deals with
- 10:51foundational truths of our faith.
- 10:55But listen, there's a very fine line between being on The Quest
- 11:00For Truth. And quarreling about things that
- 11:06are not sensual. And that don't benefit one
- 11:11person in the end of it. A sincere Believers.
- 11:16I hope you're a person that loves the Bible and I hope
- 11:19you're a person that wants to go beyond Elementary truths.
- 11:22And you want to, you want to dig deep in the terrain of the
- 11:24scriptures and get a grip on everything that the Bible has to
- 11:27shed light on. That should be your pursuit in
- 11:30life. That should be your joy in life.
- 11:33And I believe that you and I should understand all that, the
- 11:35Bible has to offer, whether it's weightier matters or things,
- 11:38that are not so clear. We should want to know God's
- 11:41mind, and God's heart. And Paul is not saying here, do
- 11:46not come to the point where you don't study or even discuss the
- 11:49details of divine revelation. I believe what the holy spirit
- 11:52is trying to say, here is more about the attitude.
- 11:56Do not quarrel about words, What are some examples of this?
- 12:03You have some people? Who orbit all their energy
- 12:07around words. You have some people for
- 12:10example, that make their entire Ministry and their spiritual
- 12:14journey. Convincing people that creation
- 12:17is not six literal days but more expansive time because the
- 12:21Hebrew word can be a broader definition and and they'll fight
- 12:25Christians about that. Or you have others who will say,
- 12:30because the Hebrew word for Adam is man.
- 12:34Adam was not a literal figure Eve was not a literal literal
- 12:37person, but they represent their allegorical of humanity and they
- 12:43creep into churches and they clash with Believers about these
- 12:46things upsetting the faith of some Buses.
- 12:51Don't quarrel about words. Don't get caught up with these
- 12:55things. He's not saying don't defend
- 12:59truth. He's not saying don't get caught
- 13:01up in serious study. The Bible, he's saying don't
- 13:04quarrel about it. In fact, when he says squirrel,
- 13:08here's the Greek word. Tell me if it sounds familiar
- 13:11katastrophe. When he says, it will ruin the
- 13:17hearers, the word ruin is katastrophe.
- 13:23Says, if you get caught up in this as a church, it will be
- 13:27catastrophe upon catastrophe. Really brother?
- 13:30Are you sure? I'm not saying in the Bible is
- 13:33subtle ways that people can destroy Souls.
- 13:38And the catastrophes are many. I rev an example of a young man
- 13:43who was headed towards Bible College, and as he was being
- 13:46prepared to go and study theology, he approached a man
- 13:49that he believed was a man of God, and you might believe the
- 13:51same, aw Tozer. And it came up to aw Tozer.
- 13:56And he said, aw Tozer. I don't know if he said it, like
- 13:58that. Pastor Tozer.
- 14:02I'm headed to Bible College. Can you give me some insight
- 14:06about Calvinism and arminianism who?
- 14:11And this is what the man said. As he received an answer from
- 14:14Tozer quote and I'll never forget the advice.
- 14:17He gave me at the time, I thought it was rather
- 14:21inconclusive and not too helpful.
- 14:24But I listen carefully, he said my son, when you get to College,
- 14:29you're going to find that. All of the boys will be gathered
- 14:31in a room discussing and arguing over arminianism in Calvinism
- 14:34night after night after night, I'll tell you what to do.
- 14:39Cliff go to your room and meet God at the end of four years,
- 14:44you'll be way down the line and they'll still be where they
- 14:47started because greater minds than yours have wrestled with
- 14:50this problem and have not come up with a satisfactory
- 14:53conclusion instead. Learn to know God now am I
- 15:00against going back and forth with people concerning these
- 15:06doctrines. Absolutely not Am I against not
- 15:10having Clarity on certain themes of the Bible?
- 15:13Absolutely. Not. but I personally refuse to
- 15:17allow myself to be given into living by the adrenaline of
- 15:22arguing. To the point where I cause
- 15:26unnecessary friction between genuine brothers and Christ and
- 15:30Sisters in Christ. To the degree, while I neglect
- 15:34my personal pursuit of holiness. This is they don't discuss about
- 15:41words. Don't study words.
- 15:44Don't quarrel about words. You have many unsanctified
- 15:50Debaters in Christendom and they're good at it.
- 15:55And their entire spiritual journey is all about arguing and
- 16:01not about becoming like Christ. This is the great warning that
- 16:05we have today. If you get caught up in
- 16:07quarreling about words, you might just be ruining your
- 16:12spiritual progress. Again am I saying that we should
- 16:16not pursue knowledge? Know what I am saying is that we
- 16:20must avoid the motive and the attitude that Paul ascribes to
- 16:24false teachers. But what do you mean Paul brings
- 16:28up quarreling about words before and he Associates it with the
- 16:33attitude of false teachers go to First Timothy chapter 6 and look
- 16:39at verse 4 with me. This is Paul's description of a
- 16:42false teacher and this is what he says among other things.
- 16:48He is, puffed up with conceit and understands nothing.
- 16:52Now, look at this, this is an important part.
- 16:54He has an unhealthy craving for controversy and for quarrels
- 17:00about words, there it is, which produced look at the fruit of
- 17:04it, which produces Envy dissension.
- 17:08Slander evil suspicions and look at an expert in verse 5 and
- 17:13causes friction. And causes friction among people
- 17:18who are depraved the Mind deprived of Truth.
- 17:20Imagine that godliness is a mean of gain.
- 17:24So here's the thing. I mean, it's a very fine line.
- 17:28You can get caught up in these things but you have to look at
- 17:31the fruit. I personally am willing to sit
- 17:34with somebody all night about whatever subject they want to
- 17:37talk about. As long as I can discern, that
- 17:39they are genuinely wanting to grasp truth.
- 17:43But I am not interested in speaking with somebody that just
- 17:47wants to quarrel because they find some cheap thrill from it.
- 17:51I don't have time to waste. There's so much that I need God
- 17:54to do in my life and if you're going to rob that time, go find
- 17:58some other place with all due respect.
- 18:01Don't quarrel about words. Don't get caught up in these
- 18:04things. But he comes to the next point.
- 18:08The next thing to avoid in verse 15, of 2nd, Timothy 2.
- 18:12Do your best to present yourself to God as one approved.
- 18:15A worker who has no need to be ashamed.
- 18:18Rightly handling. The word of Truth, avoid being
- 18:21careless with the Bible. Is the second thing.
- 18:26This is a more obvious malpractice to us.
- 18:29We understand this pretty clearly it's pretty
- 18:31straightforward and sandwiched between the negative command of
- 18:35do not quarrel about words. And in verse 16 avoid irreverent
- 18:40babbling is the cry to handle the the word of God rightly.
- 18:49But notice what he says before, he says do your best.
- 18:52Do your best, just like the verse before this.
- 18:56He is trying to emphasize the seriousness of this.
- 18:59Do your best to show yourself as one approved before God,
- 19:03white-knuckled devotion, immovable, immovable discipline.
- 19:10laser sharp Focus to what get the approval of man God forbid
- 19:17To receive your acceptance from God.
- 19:19And yeah, they're they're being approved by God as listen is to
- 19:23be severely tested to go through much scrutiny and investigation.
- 19:28Only to find yourself in the clear, only to find yourself in
- 19:33the past. This is what he's speaking about
- 19:36and he's saying, I want you Timothy Pastor, I don't want you
- 19:39to give all your energy to win the respect of your congregants.
- 19:41Do that is important to some degree.
- 19:43I want all of who you are your priority.
- 19:46You're Ambition in life to win God's acceptance.
- 19:53What would the church look like in America if every single
- 19:57believer had that as the banner over their life?
- 20:01What kind of heights of Holiness?
- 20:02Would we reach? What kind of purging and
- 20:06draining of corruption in the church?
- 20:08Would we know what kind of power from the Holy Spirit?
- 20:12Can we see flow from vessels? Who have cleanse themselves from
- 20:15all other motives except except this one?
- 20:19Make sure that you do your best of all things to seek and to
- 20:22receive your approval from God and God Alone.
- 20:27And there's an example. If you were there last Friday, a
- 20:29Bible study that I can't get out of my head.
- 20:31So I have to share this morning. About a contrast between a man
- 20:36who was concerned about God's glory and a bunch of other men
- 20:38who were concerned by inferior motives.
- 20:41If you want to turn their you can.
- 20:43It's in first Samuel chapter chapter 17, this is when Goliath
- 20:48comes on the scene and he's roaring from one Hill and he's
- 20:52intimidating the Israelites. And in first, Samuel 17 verse
- 20:5624. If you were there.
- 20:58Last Friday repetition is good. It gets in your soul deeper.
- 21:02First Samuel 17, 24. Look at the reaction of the
- 21:05Israelites. All the men of Israel when they
- 21:08saw the man being Goliath fled from him and were much afraid.
- 21:13And the men of Israel said, have you seen this man who has come
- 21:16up? Surely he has come up to defy
- 21:19Israel and the King will enrich the man who kills him with great
- 21:23riches and will give him his daughter and make his father's
- 21:26house free in Israel. What a reflection of the poor
- 21:32leadership of Saul Saul had to stoop down.
- 21:35So low, that he had to actually bribe.
- 21:37His men with cash prizes, his daughter for marriage and a
- 21:43tax-free house. With the hopes to motivate at
- 21:46least one man to stand before a Goliath and do something about
- 21:49it. And look at the attitude of the
- 21:52soldiers, nevermind Saul, what was their concern?
- 21:56They said, surely he has come up to defy Israel.
- 22:01Israel and here you have unfortunately a commentary of
- 22:05the modern Church to some degree like saw you have much
- 22:09leadership that needs to use, worldly means to try to wake up,
- 22:13the people to be faithful to the Lord to get involved in serving.
- 22:17God, God's glory is not enough. Walking for him, is not enough.
- 22:24No. No.
- 22:24We need to give you toys. And we need to, we need to pet
- 22:27you and we need to give you some kind of entertainment.
- 22:29Something of the world to persuade you, that God is worthy
- 22:33of your service. And like these men.
- 22:38When opposition comes, you have many Believers, that are only
- 22:42concerned about themselves. He has come to defy, Israel, my
- 22:46safety and my comfort, and my needs.
- 22:49Where's God in all of this? Where is God?
- 22:54I'll tell you where God is after this David shows up on the scene
- 22:58and I want you to see how he responds in verse 26, and David
- 23:02said to the men who stood by him what shall be done for the man
- 23:05who kills this Philistine and takes away.
- 23:07The reproach from Israel for who is this uncircumcised
- 23:11Philistine. Now look that he should defy the
- 23:14armies of the Living God. So, David shows up on the scene,
- 23:21you know, how these men including salt interpret what's
- 23:24happening to Goliath, oh, he's gonna kill us.
- 23:27And here's some, here's some money.
- 23:29And here's a beautiful girl and here's an easier life.
- 23:34If somebody's willing to stand up and David this teenager shows
- 23:37up on the scene, he goes. Do you guys hear that?
- 23:39He's blaspheming our God. David possess something that the
- 23:45entire armies of Israel, lack. You know what?
- 23:48It was a fierce loyalty to the glory of God?
- 23:52And guess what? Because he had that he didn't
- 23:55need promotion. He didn't need man's approval.
- 23:59He didn't need your toys. He didn't need your product.
- 24:03God's glory was enough. You want to dishonor?
- 24:06My God. Then I will stand for me, even
- 24:10if I stand alone, and that's the thing that drove him into that
- 24:13Valley and to look up into the eyes of a man that could have
- 24:16crushed them at the expense of the risk of his own life.
- 24:19He said, because God's glory is at stake.
- 24:21I will give my life. That is the key ingredient that
- 24:25will produce an endurance and great acts of faith from your
- 24:29life. And that is unfortunate.
- 24:31The thing that keeps many people because they lack it from doing
- 24:35things for the Lord, like these armies show.
- 24:38Get a church filled with people that want to honor God and you
- 24:41don't have to use worldly means to try to keep them.
- 24:47That's what Paul is trying to say to Timothy.
- 24:50Don't worry about your approval. Do your best for God's sake, for
- 24:54God's name, for God's approval. And you will see great strides
- 24:59in your faith and he says, rightly handle it.
- 25:02So, this is the, this is the context.
- 25:04Get your approval from God as you defend the truth, as you
- 25:06stand for a while, there is opposition and criticism and
- 25:09heresy. But more than that, not just
- 25:11defending it, rightly handling it What does that mean?
- 25:18Very straightforward, isn't it? To not include your
- 25:22interpretation in two verses to honor the context in which
- 25:27things are presented to. As a pastor dissect.
- 25:31The word of God in a way, that doesn't cause more confusion,
- 25:34but brings more clarity to apply it to your life.
- 25:38First, before you dare even teach it to another Soul.
- 25:41Rightly handled the word of Truth in the original language.
- 25:45It simply means this. Cut it straight.
- 25:50Cut it straight. Honor it respect it.
- 25:55Revere God through it. And this imagery is very
- 26:00impressionable when we understand that, the word of
- 26:02Truth is also referred to what as the sword of the spirit.
- 26:07So you can translate it this way.
- 26:08Rightly handle the sword of the spirit. if handled Faithfully,
- 26:18the sword of the spirit, Can kill the old man and make way
- 26:24for the new man to live in the newness of Christ.
- 26:28If handled Faithfully, this sword is able to slaughter the
- 26:33power of sin. so that Holiness can flow through your
- 26:38bloodstream as a blood, but Christian If handled with love
- 26:44this sword can cut out unbelief in the great physician of your
- 26:48soul, can replace it with faith. But unfortunately.
- 26:56If handled without God in mind, this sword can be turned into a
- 27:00tool to pitch. It's you.
- 27:06And to satisfy your flesh because someone refuses to take
- 27:10out the sharp Blades of the word of God, that cuts your heart
- 27:13with conviction. And the opposite way.
- 27:18This sword can also be mishandled by by frightening,
- 27:21Sinners unnecessarily because someone is Out For Blood and
- 27:26they decided to wound people without healing in mind and
- 27:31they're out just to make a statement even at the expense of
- 27:35your soul. And listen, even some genuine
- 27:39believers. Can cut out portions of this,
- 27:45favorable parts of the Bible and they have an imbalance diet,
- 27:50making them malnourished in the spirit.
- 27:53Can I prove that to you? Go to Luke chapter 24 with me.
- 27:57I want to show you something quite interesting in the Bible.
- 28:01I this portion of the Gospel of Luke is arguably one of my
- 28:07favorites. There's so much meat in this
- 28:10chapter of the Book of Luke. And what you see here is those
- 28:15two disciples on the road to Emmaus.
- 28:18They were sad. They were sad because the
- 28:21Messiah, the one that did all these Miracles.
- 28:24The one that made so many promises and their understanding
- 28:27has been crucified and news spread through all Jerusalem.
- 28:33This man is dead. And their heads were hanging low
- 28:38and Jesus shows up on the scene and he avails himself, he
- 28:43doesn't reveal that. He is Jesus.
- 28:47And he begins to have a conversation with him.
- 28:48And he asks, why are you sad? And they look at each other and
- 28:51they look back at him and they are you are you new to this
- 28:55place? Did you not just hear what's
- 28:57transpired over the past few days?
- 29:00And they begin to express their sorrow and their grief and their
- 29:03disappointment and here's counselor Jesus.
- 29:09Here's Pastor, Jesus. You know what?
- 29:14He's going to say. What would probably cause people
- 29:16to leave the church of it. He's very insensitive that
- 29:20Pastor doesn't isn't sympathize with me.
- 29:22You want to see what Jesus said, look here in verse 25 of Luke
- 29:2624. And he said to them, o foolish
- 29:28ones. And slow of heart to believe all
- 29:33that the prophets have spoken. He calls them fools.
- 29:39He calls them fools. That seems insensitive you have
- 29:44two men who put their hope in the Messiah, their hope, and in
- 29:47the Christ. And it seems like their faith is
- 29:50being challenged and and you come Lord and you tum your
- 29:53foolish Why? Was it because they sincerely
- 30:02believed and they were going through a trial.
- 30:05No. It's because what, what did he
- 30:07say? Slow of heart to believe all
- 30:11that the prophets have spoken. They believed some of what the
- 30:16prophets have spoken, not all, why just like many of the Jews
- 30:21including the disciples when they read the Old Testament
- 30:24scriptures, you know, where they gravitated towards the
- 30:26triumphant Messiah, the Messiah, that would save Israel from its
- 30:30oppressors. The Messiah that would deliver
- 30:32this nation and would rule the world.
- 30:35That is the thing that they were attracted to.
- 30:37That is a thing that they interpret its solely and they
- 30:39miss the suffering one. They miss the one that would die
- 30:45and would be buried. And when resurrect and guess
- 30:49whose fault it was theirs. Some people question, how can
- 30:55Jesus be so strong against the leadership of that day?
- 30:58They were just understanding what they seem to understood
- 31:01know. They misunderstood the Bible
- 31:04wasn't confusing. They just chose the parts that
- 31:08they wanted to receive while neglecting the others.
- 31:13And that's what many Christians do today.
- 31:17They don't take all of the word of God.
- 31:19They take some of the word of God, preferably the ones that
- 31:22don't disturb their sin. And don't challenge them to be
- 31:27prayerful and serious and zealous.
- 31:30Give me the ones that will Coach me and will help me pursue my
- 31:34dreams and my ambitions and that's what's the most popular
- 31:37preaching today. It's self-help.
- 31:41Sprinkled with some Jesus on it. And then you wonder why there's
- 31:47so much compromised so much. Powerlessness and not just that,
- 31:52just like these disciples consider this, that because of
- 31:55their lack of balance. Understanding of the word of
- 31:58God, they invited unnecessary sorrow.
- 32:02The reason why Jesus rebuked them was because the very sorrow
- 32:06they were experiencing was their own doing.
- 32:11And what about the depression and people's lives?
- 32:14And what about the weakness? And what about the spiritual
- 32:19anemic state of so many believers?
- 32:24it's because like these two on the road to Emmaus, they took
- 32:27some of the Bible and not all of it.
- 32:33You didn't consider the rest of the scriptures you too.
- 32:37So listen, what does Jesus do to these Heavy Hearts?
- 32:41What did you do to provide healing and restoration?
- 32:44Look at verse 26, was it not necessary that the Christ should
- 32:48suffer these things and enter into glory and then look at
- 32:51verse 27, He says here, it says, here about him and beginning
- 32:57with Moses and all the prophets, he interpreted to them all the
- 33:02scriptures, the things concerning himself. so you know
- 33:07what, Jesus does, the great Expositor He rightly handles the
- 33:12word of Truth. See your fault as you didn't
- 33:17listen to all. So you know what I'm going to do
- 33:18to you right now. I'm going to give you all that
- 33:20the prophets have said. and I always say this when ever I
- 33:23references, this this part of the Bible, don't you wish that
- 33:26the Holy Spirit recorded that bible study, He didn't they just
- 33:32summarize it? Oh, I would have loved to know
- 33:35what Jesus said. As you walk with those to the
- 33:38realize what we said in Moses, do you realize what was said in
- 33:41the prophets? Do you realize what was said in
- 33:43the Psalms and this is what happens, we know this later on
- 33:46these Heavy Hearts, listen, they invited that Pain by their
- 33:49negligence, they invited that Sorrow by their laziness by the
- 33:55presupposition by their desire to choose and eat the And spit
- 33:59out the bones, whatever that means.
- 34:03And by the end of that Bible study later on when Jesus
- 34:05appears to them in that house and he disappears, they look at
- 34:09each other and said did not our hearts burn within us.
- 34:13So that what's that's what happens when you honor the
- 34:16Bible, for what it is, you take the scripture for what it is
- 34:20that you rightly handle it. You will know a burning
- 34:25sensation that will cause your affections for Christ to
- 34:28increase that will burn away all other things of the Flesh and
- 34:32will cause you like those two to run out of that house and tell
- 34:35others about this Jesus. Don't be deceived by those who
- 34:40are filling stadiums and when that talented worship team goes
- 34:44up. There's a hoopla and there's
- 34:46amazing passionate expression of praise If there is not a right
- 34:52handling of the truth, it's all a facade.
- 34:55It's misguided at best. Jesus rightly handle the word of
- 35:00Truth. Listen, the implications of this
- 35:03is great. Pay attention now To rightly
- 35:06handle the truth. Has the power as we know to save
- 35:10a soul from hell. And listen, it has the ability
- 35:12to save the saved from unnecessary sorrows.
- 35:18Honor the Bible read it. That's why I personally, this
- 35:22isn't Bible, this is personal but I'm sure the Bible can be
- 35:24proven by this statement. Read your Bible entirely.
- 35:30Let me be practical Now, read it cover to cover.
- 35:34And listen, I say this in love, if you're a Believer, has been a
- 35:37Believer for many years and you haven't read through the entire
- 35:40Bible. Shame on you.
- 35:43Shame on you. You have to know the word of God
- 35:49from cover to cover. If you believe that this is the
- 35:52word of God, the most important truth known to mankind and you
- 35:56haven't covered it after many years.
- 35:59Why? Get into the word honor, the
- 36:05context have conversations about it.
- 36:08Seek reputable men, who fear God and interpret it correctly and
- 36:12you will know something in your soul, you will know a great
- 36:15protection and provision that you can't even imagine.
- 36:19Rightly handle the word of Truth. and we come to the final
- 36:23warning in second Timothy, In verse 16 down.
- 36:32We're told to avoid one. More thing.
- 36:35First thing, avoid quarreling about things that are not
- 36:38Central, it ruins, it's hearers, secondly, avoid Miss handling or
- 36:44being negligent or lazy with the Bible.
- 36:47You are inviting like those two, perhaps, unnecessary sorrows and
- 36:50ways of thinking, and lastly, avoid people.
- 36:57Who are given to irreverent babble.
- 37:02This may seem like an introduction to a different
- 37:04version of polluted speech. It may seem like the impression
- 37:08here is don't be around those. Who entertain sin with their
- 37:12tongue? Who are?
- 37:16Entertaining foul language who don't honor Christ in their
- 37:21dialogue. But the the context suggest,
- 37:24otherwise Paul seems to be suggesting that this irreverent
- 37:29Babble actually speaks of false teaching.
- 37:34False teaching. Now we hear that when we go,
- 37:36okay, I get it, don't believe false teaching but I believe the
- 37:39emphasis is different here. It's not saying, don't believe
- 37:42what is wrong. I believe what it is saying here
- 37:43is, don't be around. Don't invite, don't leave an
- 37:48Open Door in your life of those who contradict core teachings of
- 37:52your faith. We are in no doubt call to be
- 37:58associated with this world and every sphere of life, even those
- 38:03who have heard, the gospel and refused to believe it, you're
- 38:05supposed to have contact with such people.
- 38:07That's where your light shines. But there is a different
- 38:11responsibility by the leadership of a church to make sure that
- 38:15the right people are in attendance within the assembly.
- 38:22and pastures have a call to make sure that those within are not
- 38:28promoting a teaching, that would upset the faith of some and he
- 38:34brings up two people by name feminism.
- 38:37File etus Or fill it us. Now here's what's interesting,
- 38:43how many as has been mentioned before?
- 38:44Go to First Timothy chapter 1, verse 20, actually verse 19 and
- 38:49look what we're told about this man.
- 38:55In verse 19, holding faith and a good conscience by rejecting.
- 39:00This, some have made shipwreck of their faith among whom are
- 39:03Himalayas and Alexander whom I have handed over to Satan.
- 39:07That they may learn not to blaspheme.
- 39:10So you know what Paul did with this Jimenez guy.
- 39:13He apparently was in the Church of Ephesus and he started going
- 39:16around teaching weird things. He's having people over for
- 39:20Bible study at his house and now he's getting it to some strange
- 39:24stuff. One of them being you guys
- 39:26realize the resurrection already happened, right?
- 39:28And they're all looking at each other.
- 39:29Like what are you talking about? Yeah.
- 39:32And we don't know what he taught specifically.
- 39:35He could have said that the resurrection already happened
- 39:37that there is no bodily resurrection that your spirit is
- 39:40resurrected, it's all done. There's no Resurrection to look
- 39:42forward to Now here's the problem.
- 39:44That's a core tenet of our faith.
- 39:46That's not secondary issues that serious.
- 39:49That is foundational. Paul hears about it.
- 39:53Paul must have confronted him perhaps.
- 39:55They went back and forth and Jimenez was convinced.
- 39:57Paul says, you're out of here, you can't be in this church and
- 40:01teach such things you need to go.
- 40:03That's what it means to be handed over to Satan.
- 40:06You want to, you want to act like Satan with your sin, the
- 40:09final stage of church, this event, you can't stay here.
- 40:11We're sorry. We're a people called to
- 40:13holiness. Yes, you want to believe what
- 40:16Satan believes. Then go into his world and
- 40:18preach it all Yuan. Don't preached in the house of
- 40:20God. Here's what's amazing Jimenez
- 40:25was kicked out. And he seems to still be
- 40:28pursuing the faith of those within the same church.
- 40:33Like even though he was excommunicated, he's still
- 40:36trying to. He still trying to deter what
- 40:39people believe in the same church that he was kicked out
- 40:41of. And guess what, it worked a
- 40:43certain degree because we read of him and his and Alexander.
- 40:46And now we go to chapter 2 of the second book.
- 40:49And we were to Himalayas and fill it.
- 40:51This, he got another one, he got another one. and he was
- 40:58upsetting the faith of some and this man had to be warned about
- 41:08And This concerns the first point about this message,
- 41:11doesn't it? Listen!
- 41:13All it takes is one guy in a church, man.
- 41:16To not believe that they will be held accountable before God to
- 41:20not hold to this truth. All the truck was one him and a
- 41:23has to cause trouble in a church.
- 41:28And this is the warning. Failing to be prompt failing, to
- 41:33be serious about someone, in the midst, who was intentionally,
- 41:35trying to sway. Others away is nothing short of
- 41:38deadly. I know in this place, many of
- 41:40you, if not all of you love the truth and you can't even fathom
- 41:44how this is relatable to our context.
- 41:47If God by his mercy and his will decides for this church to grow,
- 41:52don't be shocked, who comes in. Don't be surprised.
- 41:56It's a scheme of Satan. And it is so deadly.
- 42:00Paul says it can spread like gangrene Another translation
- 42:06says it can spread like cancer. Many of us have seen that over
- 42:10the past year and a half with many narratives from the world,
- 42:14including a false view of Justice and Black lives matter
- 42:18and all these weird ideas of what the Bible says, concerning
- 42:21these issues. And how fast did it?
- 42:23Corrupt? Churches, like gangrene, People
- 42:28ate it up. And within just a matter of a
- 42:32few months, you had churches that were Faithfully preaching
- 42:37and teaching the Bible now, electing Elders based on their
- 42:41race. This is not something to play
- 42:44around with. And it can just start from one.
- 42:51And so Paul is telling Timothy, you got to pay attention to
- 42:54this. And here's, here's a call for
- 42:57you. Pray for your pastors.
- 43:00Pray for all pastors because pastors are like surgeons.
- 43:03When they see something that's deadly and is lethal, they must
- 43:07be prompt to do something. They must be prompt to make an
- 43:10operation to make sure that it doesn't spread and to deal with
- 43:13that as soon as as soon as possible.
- 43:18I pray that they would never be an issue in this house that
- 43:20fears God's word. Pray for your pastors and pray
- 43:24for either people to have a watching.
- 43:26I now, you might be hearing this and saying that's great.
- 43:30That's wonderful, but I'm not a pastor.
- 43:32This isn't applied to me, that's a duty that belongs to you and
- 43:35maybe the elders. So how does this really apply to
- 43:38my personal life and it does in many ways, but I'll reinforce
- 43:42what I said earlier. Here's your duty, here's your
- 43:45duty in a world where you can, it's almost impossible to ignore
- 43:49false narratives, and teachings. It's in the form of songs.
- 43:52It's in the forms of quick reels on your phone.
- 43:55It's in the form of so many different means by which the
- 43:59enemy is trying to persuade you from rightly handling and
- 44:02understanding the truth. And we've seen it in some of you
- 44:05have seen loved ones over the past year and a half, get caught
- 44:08up in it. Here's your duty.
- 44:10Let me say it again. I know this isn't glamorous, but
- 44:12let me say it again. Know your Bible. know, your
- 44:17Bible and I will quote a preacher who said this and I am
- 44:19in full agreement because if there is anyone who owns a Bible
- 44:24and does not read it regularly and does not seek to understand
- 44:26it, they deserve to be deceived They deserve to be deceived.
- 44:36And there will be an increase of deception in this world that you
- 44:40won't be able to look at any direction without seeing it.
- 44:43You think it's bad. Now, when Jesus in that
- 44:47discourse concerning the end times and Matthew 24 warned, and
- 44:50gave the signs to his disciples of what the end times would look
- 44:52like, remember what the first thing was see that no one leads.
- 44:56You astray, that was the first thing Jesus said, see that?
- 45:00No one leads. You astray.
- 45:01The first sign that Jesus gave of the last days was Mass
- 45:07deception. And so great.
- 45:10Is this deception? Just like these to look at Verse
- 45:1318 who have swerved from the truth implying that they were
- 45:17once in the truth. They once held to it.
- 45:23They once claimed it and professed it and then they
- 45:26swayed away from it. But you just said, know your
- 45:29Bible. You just said know your
- 45:34Doctrine. You're saying here that they
- 45:36swerved from the truth. So what's the truth?
- 45:38Got to do with me and protecting me?
- 45:41Well I'll take it to the next level.
- 45:42It's more than just knowing the truth.
- 45:45Because you can sit in a place like this and here faithful,
- 45:48Bible preaching for weeks and years.
- 45:52And still be deceived in the end.
- 45:55Brother, you're scaring me, good.
- 46:00I want to show you in our final verse.
- 46:01What? You must do to know a
- 46:03protection. Listen, this protection will be
- 46:06so great. That even the Antichrist won't
- 46:09be able to deceive you. This protection is so powerful
- 46:13that even with false signs and wonders.
- 46:16You'll be faithful to the word of Truth.
- 46:19The second Thessalonians chapter 2. in this chapter, Paul
- 46:30describes the Antichrist, the timing of the Antichrist, the
- 46:33ways of the Antichrist, Let's begin in verse 9. 2nd
- 46:40Thessalonians 2:9. The coming of the Lawless one is
- 46:45by the activity of Satan with all power and false signs and
- 46:49wonders. You have many Believers today
- 46:52that have made their Christianity.
- 46:53Not just about quarreling about words.
- 46:55Those are those who belong to the debate Society?
- 46:58There are those who have an unhealthy craving for signs and
- 47:01wonders. I believe God can do miracles.
- 47:07I believe God can heal the sick. I believe that God can intervene
- 47:10and do Supernatural things because my Bible says God can do
- 47:13it. But then there are those like
- 47:16many extremes who just want signs and wonders their Bibles
- 47:20collecting dust because they don't believe this is
- 47:22Supernatural. They want tangible things.
- 47:25Those people are setting themselves up for deception.
- 47:28When you neglect the word of God and want Miracles and power and
- 47:34manifestations, all it's going to take is for the Antichrist to
- 47:37show up, perform signs and wonders.
- 47:39And you got some people who attended church the whole life
- 47:40saying, I don't know. This is pretty convincing.
- 47:46With false signs and wonders. Now look at this verse 10 and
- 47:50with all Wicked deception. So this is how bad it's going to
- 47:54be. You're not just going to have a
- 47:55persuasive person with charismatic abilities, calling
- 47:59people to believe something that's not true, he's gonna back
- 48:01it up with miracles. And look at the people who are
- 48:08going to be deceived. For those who are perishing,
- 48:11because they refused to love the truth and so be saved.
- 48:18Did you catch it? It didn't say because they
- 48:22refuse to know the truth. And so be saved to love it.
- 48:33You can have people that can quote verses and still be
- 48:35deceived. But here's the the factor that
- 48:40makes it different to love for the truth.
- 48:45That your heart is convinced within yourself that no matter
- 48:47what the truth is, whether it offends your flesh, whether it
- 48:50lines up with your understanding of life, you're willing to
- 48:54submit to the truth because you know that this is God's voice
- 48:58and this is God's Will and God's ways and you love God.
- 49:01So you love his truth? It's a heart that says I want
- 49:04truth at any cost. I'll submit the truth in any
- 49:07way, it's that love for the truth, not just having an
- 49:11acquiring information about it. But with a Heart of Worship
- 49:15willing to absorb it and apply it, it is that love for the
- 49:19truth that God will honor and by the power of His holy spirit,
- 49:22revealed to you more truth and will be the great teacher in
- 49:26your life and will be the great discerner in your soul because
- 49:30he sees a heart that says I love truth.
- 49:33I want truth, I may not understand all truth but oh
- 49:35Lord, I want all that I can get You know what begins to happen.
- 49:41You develop a discernment. And it's an amazing amazing
- 49:45sensation. It's not mystical God.
- 49:48Doesn't sprinkle something on you?
- 49:50It's the word of God in you. and then you have a filter and so
- 49:55when you, when you visit a church and you hear something
- 49:57and you're like a lot of that sounded right, But there's
- 50:01something off about it. It's not because you're Miss
- 50:05judging the person, or you don't like his style of preaching,
