- 1:44CBS run of Philip Marlowe at any rate. From December thirty first of nineteen
- 1:49forty nine. Here's the episode The House that Jacqueline builts Behind Me all of
- 2:00a Night's White Head, Old Lady, When the clock struck twelve. From
- 2:04the pan of Raymond Chandler, outstanding athrough of crime fiction comes his most famous
- 2:07character in the Adventures of Phillip Marlowe. Now with Gerald Moore, sorry as
- 2:23Philip Marlowe, we bring you tonight's exciting story, The House that Jacqueline built.
- 2:44They say, the end of an old year, in this part of
- 2:46a new is a good time to take stock, stand back and give yourself
- 2:50the one solder do a reissue and that tired list of resolutions. But for
- 2:53a private detective that routine only means tallying at the time. Just dirty your
- 2:58hands on someone else's murder, or dirty your brain with their scheme. So
- 3:02you let the height on your heart throw a little sick and pull a part
- 3:06of your mind that feels things a little farther back into a show, and
- 3:09maybe plan on later hunting up a cup of kindness to someplace. Not even
- 3:15that had the price tag on it these days. So there was work to
- 3:17do in a feeder collect before I could pick up the tab on an evening's
- 3:21fun It's not a fair question. Fantastic, actually crazy. But this is
- 3:27horrible. Took a feature. Does a matter? What's going on the house.
- 3:30It's gone, it's vanished. What all the papers, over the years
- 3:32of research and months of grooving work in the jungles, vidings of preciousness all
- 3:36gone. We's go away from the very heart of the tea means to be
- 3:38an entire house. Now, look, if you just sit down and tell
- 3:39me who you are, no object. I must have action. I must
- 3:43looky, who are you? Professor? Physics? Paper? What's all?
- 3:46Let's talk about jungles and research and botanical research, tropical herbs and half an
- 3:49earthy years of it all for nothing out because the house is disappeared. Book.
- 3:53You said that several times. Now look investigating, you've had experience.
- 3:55I'm going to hire you. Now I go to where a house should be
- 3:59a house? Time myself? Who stood? And where do I find a
- 4:01big lock a hole in the ground? And here, come on over with
- 4:05the couch and lie down. Take it easy, will it's all in such
- 4:11a shock seven death, the long trip to get our papers and didn't find
- 4:15the house. Car I know. Now, look, if you just lie
- 4:17there a few minutes until you feel better. We'll taught over a little closer
- 4:20to the beginning. That matter. What's happened here? The data house has
- 4:26disappeared, and the professor's collapsed trying to tell me about it, and I
- 4:28you you, Oh, who are you? I'm Professor Piper's the system.
- 4:33Whether you are system will it's definitely oh. I'm glad you got it.
- 4:36Don't worry the living. Let's not waste any more time. You've got to
- 4:41find out what happens that house. Release professive Pipe. But don't excite yourself.
- 4:44Let me explain to the detective Mallow, Philip Mallow, I'm definitely fraide
- 4:49the house. Mister Marlow, I presume I got as far as telling you
- 4:55that for over a year's been in South America in the interior of the zil
- 4:58studying tropical earth. Yeah, that got in there somewhere. I think gives
- 5:00a course? Did that's tell him about the house, Except it's time.
- 5:04I look, professor, I've got something here to do you the world of
- 5:08good me too. I think I'll try this. Take your time about it,
- 5:13Miss Tomorow, could I speak to you? Of course, I'll be
- 5:16right back. Mister Piper chist volatile, isn't it? Yes, as I
- 5:26was saying, Miss Tomorrow, we've been almost completely out of touch with the
- 5:29civilization for over a years. Really, you never know it beauty plus before
- 5:33America. Mw let me tell you what happened. Okay. Professor Piper's collaborator
- 5:39and partner, Maxicell Statusant cost fever and died three weeks ago. Where was
- 5:43this we do? Whether or not that's come from nothing? The look,
- 5:47Miss Tomorrow. They had worked together for years, and all their notes and
- 5:50papers were kept stored at Sibusant's place here at Los Angeles. We came here
- 5:55to get that material. The house was gone fantastic give me certainly, we
- 6:00all thought Nxvielle Stibusan's wife Katherine was living in it. She owned this in
- 6:02her name. Yes, Maxwell actually owned nothing. He didn't want to.
- 6:06He was gone with him. It didn't sit too well with Catherine, right.
- 6:11She wanted Stavesant to stay home, and he always promised with some day
- 6:14he would and they live a happy life together. It well, she was
- 6:16a young woman, impatient, dated. Yeah, where is she now?
- 6:20Well? One of the neighbors, an old woman, said she thought she
- 6:24remembered hearing that Catherine went to Nebraska, Nebraska, and that's all we know.
- 6:29Professor Pipe and I are stumped. We came to you because we want
- 6:31action and wanted past. Will you help us? Well? The whole years
- 6:34been screwy. There's no reason why this should bother me. Tracking a runaway
- 6:45residence for the Metropolitan Wilds of Los Angeles didn't sound so step So after Stephanie
- 6:49gave it the address eighty eight to forty on Orange Drives and told me that
- 6:53she and the Professor could be reached at Villa three in the Worship God,
- 6:56I get in my car and drove out Orange Drives where a house numbered eighty
- 6:59eight to forty would have been. I found a seat house to be moved
- 7:02out six months ago in the middle of the knife too said where wire who
- 7:06had done the job? Nobody knew until I got around with missus Elma Lathrop,
- 7:11whose house back to Stayvesant placem across the alley. She blocked her front
- 7:15door the waistline and said she never heard of bride Crisp Gabe and I as
- 7:18warm and as sympathetic as a nice cube. Remember that, huh, I
- 7:21said, I have to tell you. I remember craziest thing I ever saw
- 7:26them men working all day and all night getting that little house up on rollers.
- 7:29Now there, I'd like to know what all the rush was about.
- 7:31So you wouldn't happen to know where they took it? Hid? No,
- 7:34wouldn't that Katherine Stuyvesant wasn't a very sociable type person. But if that's the
- 7:40way she wants to be, it's all right with me. It's good.
- 7:43Now. Look, I don't suppose you'd know who she sold it to?
- 7:46No? What company did the movie? Oh wouldn't? I though? It's
- 7:49the Gilligan Wrecking and Movement Company, And believe you me, the name fits
- 7:54them clumbs the Oxes. In such a rush they backed a big crock over
- 7:58my pomegranate tree, beautiful, full grown, free and not pink? Are
- 8:01health? Did I make them pay? I'll bet? Now? Have I
- 8:05a choice? I tracked that outfit down and made them shell up through the
- 8:09nose. For that was I burn well bully for you? Now, look
- 8:13where is the Gilligan outfit topics? Missus Lafer and Adams and Rampart Street for
- 8:16t let's see what's going on anyway? Are you asking me all these questions.
- 8:22Well, frankly, I'm a prom grand at fancy and myself missus lacer.
- 8:26Happy New Year. Yeah yeah, this is for ten rampart, isn't
- 8:43it. That's correct? Just sign outside, says Bluckman's Novelties. You want
- 8:46to taper light till the tapa. Okay, okay, look you looking for
- 8:52the Gilligan Wrecking and Moving Company. I was sold. They had this place
- 8:54six months ago night, but they're out of business now. They were being
- 8:58brookelaptains were in the hurry. How do you like that, Gillian? Oh
- 9:03everybody waited, excluding my boyfriend. He needs to that's really met that.
- 9:09They were moving out as we moved in, getting smaller. Now. Look,
- 9:13I'd like to talk to your boyfriend Mitsy. Bessy, Well that lives
- 9:20real close to here, the Tatman room. Oh thanks, Bessie. What's
- 9:24that last name? Button Slag? Oh, button slag? Anybody know that?
- 9:30You guys just calling back all right? In the killing the job alone?
- 9:33Will you? I wish I was a tender raffle. A lot of
- 9:50I wonder who wrote hurry. I wish name smallow. I want them to
- 10:01help on a job. The Gilligan company, did Bat? All right?
- 10:09How did you get to me? Bessie, by the way, said theater
- 10:13drop around? Oh yeah, dumb dame, don't I every night? Come
- 10:18on, anybody shoes the roby. I was in the shower for sure,
- 10:20and now looked Bat. Were you working for Gilligan six months ago? Yeah?
- 10:26Oh? Why you remember moving a house mediate forty orange dry? May
- 10:28he ate forty orange drying? Ye? See now? Oh yeah that one
- 10:31too. It was his screoliest deal I ever saw. Wait to move it
- 10:35to? Do you remember all the way to San Pedro, big hurry up
- 10:37job, the boss kept saying. We were racing the weather. Nobody could
- 10:41figure it racing the woman? Why that beats me? When you set the
- 10:43house off down at the end of Front Street from the Harbor Salvage Company yard
- 10:48Harbor Sealwich is San Pedro? Tell me Bat? Was the house empty?
- 10:52Well, certainly you don't think all bad? I mean the furniture. Oh
- 10:56oh, why what's all the fuss? People are interested in the location in
- 11:00that house? Oh yeah, oh that's too bad. Okay, Oh,
- 11:03I got a big hunch it didn't sit very long where we left it.
- 11:05Buddy, The Pacific Ocean was only six inches from the back door. I'm
- 11:20beating as mate, what's on your mind? I let you other head man
- 11:22of how the salvage company and houses on my mind? That's me, But
- 11:26I don't want any more house job. I did one this year and that's
- 11:30plenty six months ago. House delivered by Gilligan. That's it, mate,
- 11:33And I did a masterpiece produce, so myself sure wouldn't change it again.
- 11:37No, too shifty, Never mind your career. What happened to that house?
- 11:39What happened if I loaded it on that old woman's bird? What old
- 11:43woman? As I was saying, I loaded it on that old woman's barge,
- 11:48battened it down ship tape in the last two days, good sailing weather
- 11:50and center out to sea. It made that house cluck here on a barge
- 11:54that it did, mate, bound for the Golden Gate in the upper armor,
- 11:58San Francisco. Babe, there shrimp fishing town in the back water.
- 12:01They're called Wilson, I remember right. It's on San Pableau Bay, about
- 12:05fifteen miles north Bridger. Now do you mind telling me who the old woman
- 12:09was? Who owned that barge? And if not a bit kindly old sold
- 12:11she was named Jacqueline Beattie went aboard with the house and waved goodbye if in
- 12:16the front door she pulled out all smiles. Dudes, Madison, you look
- 12:20like a deckhand who lost your sea legs. But it started three short hours
- 12:31ago to check up on an la residence that evolve itself into a chased up
- 12:35the coast after our house boat, which was a project I distinctly did not
- 12:39want to jump into without first of nods for my clients. In fact,
- 12:43I was ready to scuddle a whole business. So I found a phone and
- 12:46called Villa three. It's the Wilship Gardens. Yeah, hello, Hello,
- 12:54that's you, Matthews smallow all higher Phil. What can I do for you
- 12:58but make it snappy? I'm up to my ears. Wait a minute,
- 13:03well, look you'll called up. You're expecting someone else? Fancy, didn't
- 13:05you? Who? A guy named Felix Piper? Maybe nice fit? What's
- 13:11the connection? Client? What fit? Ex client? Mollow? He's it?
- 13:13Somebody packed him Yeah, with a knife, a very fancy knife like
- 13:18some Indians in brazil Us. The boy tell me you better drop in here.
- 13:22Where are you now, Sam Pedro? What are you doing down there?
- 13:26Yeah? Well you you wouldn't believe it, Matthews, Really you wouldn't.
- 13:39I love money, you can get all that bell hump now hello,
- 13:43I am Matthew's any progress too, so an the way, I'm counting on
- 13:46you for that. Come on inside, have a look. Okay, when
- 13:50did it happen? A couple hours ago? What was his dodge? Anyway?
- 13:54We found a club membership card list him as a buttonist who has part
- 13:58as. I spent a lot of time in research in Brazil. But a
- 14:03nuts come from nothing. Oh well, there's your client fill Professor Felix Spifer,
- 14:09and somebody nailed them right between the shoulders. Hey, Matthews, something's
- 14:15awful, Hayware, what do you mean that's not the man who hired me?
- 14:31In just a moment the second act of Philip Marlow. But first,
- 14:35one fellow who made a New Year's resolution years ago not to get married certainly
- 14:39saw it blow up with a bang. A couple of weeks ago. Fellow
- 14:43by the name of Andy of Amos and Andy opened his mouth at the wrong
- 14:46moments, and there he was married to the wrong woman. Listen for Amos
- 14:50and Andy and Andy's bride on most of these same CBS stations tomorrow night Now
- 14:56with our star Gerald Moore, we returned to the second actor, Philip Marlo
- 14:58and my story the house that Jack Woolen built. When I told the secret
- 15:13Lieutenant Matthews the couple's form at our fete identified as Felix Piper and the Felix
- 15:18Piper would hired me were not one in the same, he asked a single
- 15:20eyebrows slowly, and I told him the rest of the story. Both eyebrows
- 15:24phycically leaped from his forehead. So all in all it was thirty minutes of
- 15:28steady gab might solemn word that what I had said was nothing but the truth,
- 15:31a blunt reminder that if private detective's license is revocable. Before I was
- 15:35creating, go back to my apartment on Franklin while the police went to work.
- 15:39That made it exactly four pm when key in hand, I reached my
- 15:43front door lock just as it swung in and away from me. Come in,
- 15:48well, the globe trotting Stephany had my place here to get on your
- 15:52map. Baby, Please don't Joe come in. Thank you lovely apartments you've
- 15:56got here, mister Mallow, Please, this is no time to be funny.
- 16:00Why not everything else plays funny? Your lost La house turns up floating
- 16:04on the outskirts of San Francisco. A screwball buttoners from South America is maybe
- 16:08also a killer wants a bunch of your hook at killer because what do you
- 16:11mean the Tomorlo Phoenix Piper didn't kill Cordy Corde that's his name, Eh,
- 16:18get around, don't you care? Yes, Marty Krday, he was on
- 16:21the floor of my villa when I got that. That's why I came here.
- 16:22The janitor, Yeah, yeah, let's not change his subject. This
- 16:26Corday who is he? Or was he? Mean? Ruthless man? When
- 16:30you in South America? Important? Wait a minute, an importer wants a
- 16:33button this paper. Come on, baby, tell me the truth around new
- 16:37paper. Well that's great. You mean that all this about the house is
- 16:42Tony making No, no, no, no, it's true. But that's
- 16:47no paper only jewels only, g oh, no real business tomorrow in a
- 16:52little pouch thirty thousand dollars worth hidden in the house where in the house the
- 16:56fireplace is behind the brick somewhere in the right hand you see those rules belong
- 17:00to Felix and that next hold statisine I mentioned now they belong to physics alone.
- 17:06It was for their old age expressions assay, so they could carry on
- 17:10their work. M you don't believe me, No, not quite No,
- 17:14No, for two very valid reasons. One, why did you lie in
- 17:15the first place and stay it with papers? Because we didn't know if we
- 17:18could trust you. And now the man Dad, you have to is that
- 17:21it now? I don't have to, but I do. It may not
- 17:25be mutual, Stephanie, what do you mean, well, if i'd buy
- 17:27all this but jewels, Piper and Statisant's unique retirement plan, Corday posing as
- 17:33Piper in some way cut in as a new hooker, which is what Kauday
- 17:37is. Murderer. It should now be you a Felix Piper. No,
- 17:40and who Corday's partner? I saw they looking as little man. I don't
- 17:44know his minima how I saw him Acauday in South America. You see,
- 17:48the original plan was that I come up here ahead of Felix. But either
- 17:52two answers. You couldn't wait. You saw it almost at once, So
- 17:56somehow or others Corday and this swarthy man found out about our plans. That's
- 18:02out of the cordations postal Phoenix and and what what I must have been a
- 18:07double cross corda, probably trying to do away with a swarthy man, but
- 18:11getting done away with himself instead. Where's Felix Piper now in the second rate
- 18:17hotel omber that you know? Yes, I have it right here. Christ
- 18:22you eight thinking he's here? Press few eight for one for four for one
- 18:30or okay here you talking on Stephanie. My nerves won't take the chatting.
- 18:34What should I tell him, mister Felix Piper? Please don't tell him for
- 18:38the time being. We're going to skip the police. But you and I
- 18:41are going up to San Francisco on the next plane and then out to a
- 18:44place called Wilson a Leboro house boats no less ruby ya, So tell him
- 18:48to meet us up there at the Crystal Auto Court. Got that it's the
- 18:51place. I'd say that, a little beyond Berkeley on the road to San
- 18:53Pablo Bay. All right, Felix, my mama, Yeah, tell him
- 18:57to take clear of swarthy man tonight, especially small ones. They're dangerous.
- 19:08It was two hours and thirty minutes later when Stephie and I drove into the
- 19:12quiet fishing village of Wilson on San Pablo Bay, that hugged the bend in
- 19:15the sloping shawline, like was afraid of crawling in how that specimens station would
- 19:21be the local guests in porium. So I drove my rented car in at
- 19:25a round shouldered one pump station, something freckled and gangling with a shock of
- 19:29flames for hair, pulled himself out of it, and arms and legs working
- 19:33independently wobbled over, braced themselves against the car. Gosh, you're just information
- 19:37folks. Don't be ashamed, everybody. If my town gets lost in Wilson,
- 19:41it's a big funny. Look. If that's the case, we'll on
- 19:45up right away. Red, we're looking for a houseboat. Yeah eh,
- 19:48then you better drive the water. This boy kills himself, doesn't look red.
- 19:55We're in a hurry. His houseboat belong to a lady named Jaqueline Beattie.
- 19:59No more. Joh yeah, don't worry. There's nothing funny about that
- 20:03screwy old with us. Believe me, she's that sad hill. About six
- 20:07months ago she took ever since she had went down to La bought a house
- 20:11and bought a bards and put them both together and come back here to do
- 20:14what to do? Nothing? All day and all night long. She never
- 20:18leave no why nope either as nobody else except that her husband was an artist
- 20:22painted sea picture, so he liked it around the water. But she's not
- 20:26to tell you. Act like the place is well, acts like it's made
- 20:30of gold. Go I look red, Tell me how do I get there?
- 20:33We report it's Melow doing a story on her place. Oh, paper
- 20:36people, the reporter is usually our boy. Well that's different. If one
- 20:41block straight ahead, then right and down to the bay. Thanks for red,
- 20:45happy yeah, yeah, and the gun went ahead and play writing with
- 20:57down a whether time of the bay trickle left to meet one another. We
- 21:00saw it, a white, three room cottage of floats, surrounded by fishing
- 21:03boats and a thought pot. The front door opened it. I'm not that
- 21:07tugboat any or the scraggly pioneer woman rifle cradled and bonnie arms. Just anybody's
- 21:14grandmother under a white lace shawl at that. Yes, sit, Can I
- 21:18help you? Well? Yeah, I believe so you're missus dy huh this
- 21:22right? This is Jeudi he oh, and I'm Philip Marlow, Missus b
- 21:26D. This is the Stephanie Fraser, how do you do? We're reported
- 21:29to my good We were going through Wilson here when we heard about your houseboat
- 21:33and how you brought it all the way up from Los Angeles. You had
- 21:37a particular reason for wanting this house, missus D. Oh my, yes,
- 21:41what was that? A long, long story? My boy? I
- 21:45see we're telling me Miss Viddy. The house is exactly as it was in
- 21:49Los Angeles. I don't do it to Marlow, would you like? Oh?
- 21:53Yes, we'd have to fine. Then should we see lunch tomorrow?
- 22:00Well, missus b D, we're on our way back to Los Angeles now
- 22:03the night. Oh yes, yeah. But when you see the eyes,
- 22:08the hair, the tidy up the company every time. Well, uh,
- 22:14I think lunch tomorrow will be splendid, mister Peedy. Course, good again
- 22:19until mid day tomorrow, we have the say, but it's sun to the
- 22:23fire place. Good night, Miss Brady, good night, good night,
- 22:29mister p Well is it just a sweet old lady? I don't know,
- 22:37But when will we learn about mid day tomorrow? Man, let's get back
- 22:41to the crystal water. Catting your boss Alix Piper out and alone is a
- 22:45combination that worries me plenty. No, mister Morrow, mister Piper hasn't shown
- 22:59you that he shouldn't a min up. Now. He called a half hour
- 23:02ago from someplace in Berkeley and said he was coming out here in a taxi.
- 23:04And well, now let's see a single cabin from missus Fraser here for
- 23:11six and the double number eleven for you and mister Piper. Right, mister
- 23:15Morrow, Yes, that's right, mister Crystal. Okay, now, miss
- 23:18Fraser, if he'll come along with me, I'll show you the way the
- 23:22back. In the minute, mister Morrow, I'll just tidy up till i'll
- 23:26come back here and wait with you for feed. I'm still worried. Yeah,
- 23:30I know he'll be all right once he's read, I hope. So,
- 23:34Oh, mister Crystal, can I call LA on this phone here?
- 23:37Oh sure, mister Morrow, Long distances one one oh, operating. I
- 23:48want to call a Los Angeles person, the prisoner party. I wanted detective
- 23:52lieutenant what delay? Oh yeah, new is he? Well? Look,
- 23:59I'd like to put the call through anyway, my mind. You're a wait
- 24:11what do you look like? Take it easy? Fellow hold on type?
- 24:15Did just see him? Was he small? Swarthy. I don't think what
- 24:18he looked like. He was kind of short, and maybe he's maybe swathy.
- 24:22It was also fine. I couldn't tell you. All right, all
- 24:25right, come on, come on away from it. We'll go back to
- 24:26your office. Listen to me carefully. You phone the police. I'm going
- 24:32to a houseboat on the Santabelo Bay, where I think we'll find a small
- 24:34swarthy man push a nice old lady around without batting an eye about thirty thousand
- 24:40bucks worth of rubies. After I met Felix Piper and told him wouldn't happen
- 24:52to Stephanie and brought him up to date on everything else, I slammed my
- 24:55right foot down hard on the accelerator and kept it that way. And so
- 24:59we were back at Santa Babe, out of the car and running toward Jaqueline
- 25:00Beatty's house book where I figured the sporting man who seems to know every move
- 25:04might show there. I was wrong, because Jacqueline was all alone, safe
- 25:08and sound and surprised. Why why mister Bardo's room and that girl she won't
- 25:17be with the time afraid this is, by the way, we're not reporters.
- 25:21This beauty the lady in question is dead because it's not a man all
- 25:25because of thirty thousand bucks worth of rubies and a pouse that's behind one of
- 25:27the bricks in that firefighter. Yes, yes, and I'm going to find
- 25:30them right away. It got to be here. This poker should found them
- 25:33out her. Yes, catch yours beaty isn't too long and news of these
- 25:38rubies doesn't seem to surprise you, right? What did it beat out of
- 25:45the lane? Yeah? For a man named Corday? What is it not
- 25:52a what did you say? Corday? As in Martin Corday? And it
- 25:59looks like I was right? Ye mean not? Do you any goo?
- 26:10Is he going to die until the state gets his hands on him? You
- 26:14see, missus Betty, he's killed twice tonight, right, card A you
- 26:17on if you want an ambulance talk. They had it going on. Of
- 26:21them who's double crossed by Piper and different is one of the rubers to go
- 26:26to his wife Kevin for missus card The real Piper was a crook decided to
- 26:30get the jewels himself. But that is he was also Dom Stephanie, your
- 26:37secretary crossed you for a pretty deal with me. He was her idea,
- 26:41I'm going to you for help with me posing this piper go on on carda.
- 26:48Stephane decided he used to have the real piper because he got up to
- 26:52l A and your villa soon as them expected. Yes, but she couldn't
- 26:53cross me. I was I was following all the time. She didn't phone
- 26:57you from my place. No no, no, no no no. I
- 26:59was outside your door with him and she was talking to her number. She
- 27:02made up, you know, luck and you handed her the phone. If
- 27:04you hadn't, she would have shot you. It was all lives. It
- 27:07was the swore. The man included the risen one to mister he was unconscious.
- 27:15Missus Batty, I'll get an ambulance. I assure you where the phone
- 27:19is. Yeah, after you tell me about the jewels, huh the Rube's
- 27:22Missus Beady, you'll lack of surprise about them being hidden the fireplace. I
- 27:26mean, how come? Well I phoned those six months ago when I bought
- 27:30this house from Catherine Study to sit in Los Angeles. By the way,
- 27:33mister Mono, how did you move that man? Was good day fireplace,
- 27:38honey. He went to the wrong side. It was worth the shot in
- 27:41my dog just phone over there. You know, I noticed the loose bits
- 27:47on the right hand side of the fireplace the moment I walked in. Did
- 27:49you see I built this house with my own hand. Really, why'd you
- 27:53move it up here? Honey? Because my husband and I spent our honeymoon
- 27:57in this house. We found our happiness year it stan popular. You also
- 28:03found the rubies and sent them back to Catherine Seiders. Yes, Wit,
- 28:10happy still here, mister, Happy new year, Jacqueline. By the time
- 28:32I said goodbye to Jacqueline and walked outside, the first son nineteen fifty was
- 28:37blinting across the waters. Today, nineteen fifty another chance for Molow and for
- 28:45the world. I hope we both do better with us this year. The
- 29:07Adventures of Philip Marlowe Bringing You Raymond Chandler's most famous character, Star Gerald Moore,
- 29:12are produced and directed by Norman McDonald and are written for radio by Robert
- 29:18Mitchell and gene Leavitt feature in the cast where Lois Corbett, Howard mcneer,
- 29:22Georgia Ellis, John Dayner, and Parley Bear. Detective Lieutenant Matthews is played
- 29:26by Larry Dobkin. The special music is composed and conducted by Richard rant Be
- 29:37shuring me with us again next week when Philip Marlowe says, this time each
- 29:41carried a torch and each was burned by it. The heel, the hero
- 29:45worshiper, and the hard bitten blonde, and all because of a woman already
- 29:51two days dead. Welcome back. I absolutely love the setup for this story.
- 30:18The missing house definitely draws you in, and then, of course it
- 30:27still managed to conclude the story with that little bit of hopeful philosophical note.
- 30:36And in the midst of this whole story of reading lies we get the lovely
- 30:42little nugget about Jacqueline and her husband. The one thing I will say about
- 30:47this story is that Marlowe was playing it a little too cute with the police.
- 30:52Whether he would do that or not, I guess as a matter of
- 30:56debate, but it's certainly not a very wise. Also, I will say
- 31:02that I did notice a party bear before the credits. Usually I, for
- 31:08some reason overlook his voice, but this one I recognized because his voice sounded
- 31:15just like it does in the Harold Perry Show, which I listened to all
- 31:19the way through, And you do see just the talent that Norm MacDonald continued
- 31:27to bring to the show with just incredible guest performances. All right, well,
- 31:33now we turn to some listener comments and feedback. Laurie said regarding episode
- 31:40fifteen sixty five Kid on the Corner, this was kind of a sad one,
- 31:45Wasn't it too bad for the kid? And another comment says, in
- 31:52my opinion, Philip Marlowe is the best war detective of all time, and
- 31:56there's definitely a good argument for that. Can we have a comment from Wes
- 32:02who says, a local TV station here in Dallas is playing the old black
- 32:07and white episodes of The Lone Ranger every morning. It still surprises me to
- 32:14turn it on and hear the show narrated by Philip Marlowe. Gerald Moore really
- 32:20was everywhere in the sixties. And that's definitely the case with not only Gerald
- 32:27Moore, but with a lot of very professional, talented character actors who did
- 32:34voice work, people like Paul Freese, Mail Blank, so many others.
- 32:39You just listen to them working you don't even realize it, but they played
- 32:45such a key part in creating the atmosphere and the style of so much great
- 32:52entertainment, even if they weren't center stage. Well, that will do it
- 32:55for today. We'll be back tomorrow with Nick, and then join us again
- 33:01next Wednesday for another episode of the Adventures of Philip Marlow. In the meantime,
