Speaker B: Listeners, welcome back inside the Troubled Men podcast. I am Renee Coleman, once again sitting in the heart of the Empire Snake and Jake's Christmas Club Lounge with my co host, the original troubled man for troubled times, Mr. Manny Chevrolet. Welcome, Manny.
• 0:31
Speaker C: Hey, buddy. How are you? Good, good, good.
• 0:35
  Speaker B: I'm good, I'm good.
• 0:36
  Speaker C: It's because it's your month.
• 0:37
  Speaker D: It's my month?
• 0:38
  Speaker B: What's that?
• 0:39
  Speaker C: It's Pride Month.
• 0:40
  Speaker B: Pride Month.
• 0:40
Speaker C: I know you're part of that community. Well, you know, because you are part of that community and I know you celebrate every.
• 0:47
Speaker B: We're all part of so many different communities, you know.
• 0:49
Speaker C: This is your month, though.
• 0:50
Speaker B: Well, I don't know if it's just my month.
• 0:52
Speaker C: It's you and your community. Well, I mean, sure, for this month. I know you do. You bring out your rainbow flag, right?
• 1:04
  Speaker B: You know, I don't, I don't. I don't display any kind of flags. You know, I'm just.
• 1:09
Speaker C: Because you don't want to be targeted.
• 1:11
  Speaker B: My. Sure.
• 1:13
Speaker C: You used to put it on your car, your rainbow flag during the month of June.
• 1:17
Speaker B: I never put anything on my car. Even bumper stickers. Because I feel like anything you put, you're. You're inviting someone to. To.
• 1:24
Speaker C: To rear end you like they did
• 1:27
Speaker B: or pull you over, you know?
• 1:29
  Speaker C: Yeah.
• 1:29
Speaker B: Like one time we allowed. The only bumper sticker we allowed on the Iguanas van was the Rat Fang. Remember Rat Fink from Big Daddy Roth? That little characters, you know, kind of a hot rod character. Oh, yeah, because everybody loves Rat Fang. You know, it's a universally loved character there. But yeah, it's quiet here at the old Snake and Jake, don't change the subject, okay?
• 1:55
Speaker C: We're talking about Pride Month.
• 1:56
  Speaker B: Okay. All right.
• 1:57
Speaker C: So you keep the flag your backyard now, cuz everything's through the back door with you.
• 2:03
Speaker B: Well, I don't know. We haven't been on this topic in a while, man.
• 2:06
  Speaker A: Right.
• 2:07
Speaker C: I'm surprised since you got rear ended a couple weeks ago.
• 2:10
Speaker B: Well, yeah, yeah, it had nothing to do with Pride Month, but. But I'm still dealing with that.
• 2:14
Speaker C: That issue. Yeah. So it's Pride Month and you're proud.
• 2:18
  Speaker B: Well, I'm.
• 2:19
Speaker C: You're a proud member of that people. The high. What is it? The LGBQ Y. Five people. High five people.
• 2:26
Speaker B: Well, it is Pride Month, as you say. I don't know.
• 2:30
Speaker C: When is the parade?
• 2:32
  Speaker B: Yeah, I don't know.
• 2:33
Speaker C: Someone out there in the nation does. So give Renee a call and he'll
• 2:36
Speaker B: post it on our Facebook page because
• 2:39
  Speaker C: I know he'll be there.
• 2:40
Speaker B: Well, you know, the family and his friends, community will be out there.
• 2:45
Speaker C: And, you know, with the. With this whole Pride Month, you know, who's going on the bandwagon, too, with this Pride Month, real retailers, big business. Do you know that for this month, Burger King is now Burger Queen?
• 2:58
  Speaker B: Okay, It's.
• 3:00
  Speaker D: It's smart.
• 3:01
Speaker C: Home Depot is now Homo Depot.
• 3:03
Speaker B: Wow. I didn't see that. I'm not sure if that's gonna go over so good.
• 3:09
Speaker C: I don't know. And Dairy Queen is now Dairy Queer.
• 3:12
  Speaker B: Okay.
• 3:13
  Speaker A: Okay.
• 3:14
Speaker B: Well, they could have just left a
• 3:15
Speaker C: Dairy Queen, but In N Out Burger staying the same.
• 3:18
Speaker B: Okay, that makes sense.
• 3:21
Speaker C: All right, so it's a whole month of this. And it's also Father's Day this month.
• 3:25
  Speaker B: Right, Right.
• 3:26
Speaker C: So we've got to deal with.
• 3:28
Speaker B: Yeah, I have a whole. It's. Well, it's not. It's not this week. It's what, next week or something?
• 3:32
Speaker C: I don't know. It's later on this month, during Pride
• 3:34
Speaker B: Month, I think I'm gonna be gone
• 3:36
Speaker C: for it, like always. Because you'll be on a parade float somewhere. Well, I'll be San Francisco.
• 3:42
Speaker B: I'll be out there.
• 3:43
Speaker C: Seattle, I think. Berkeley.
• 3:45
Speaker B: I think I'm gonna be Austin. Nashville.
• 3:47
Speaker C: Nashville. Oh, they have a big community there in Nashville. Driving, you know, but it's all good. I mean, there's nothing wrong with it.
• 3:55
  Speaker B: No, no.
• 3:56
  Speaker C: Right.
• 3:56
Speaker B: You know, we love all.
• 3:57
  Speaker C: Don't be defensive.
• 3:59
  Speaker B: No, no, no.
• 3:59
Speaker C: Okay. Everybody has sucked cocked once in their life.
• 4:03
  Speaker B: Well, I don't know.
• 4:05
Speaker C: So don't be defensive.
• 4:06
Speaker B: I mean, you know, as the great C.C. adcox. Father once told him, you can't unsuck a dick. So take that for what you will.
• 4:17
Speaker C: He's this. He's a master of ceremonies for the parade this month. Right. See Cox Dad. Right?
• 4:24
Speaker B: I don't know. No, I think he's. He's probably keeping it close to home there. Yeah, I think that was. Was words of W. But, you know, we've had an ongoing thing about the. The. The phrase welcome in.
• 4:36
  Speaker C: Oh, yeah.
• 4:38
Speaker B: So we got some intel from. From one of our.
• 4:42
  Speaker A: Our.
• 4:42
Speaker B: Our intrepid listeners out there in the troubled nation.
• 4:48
Speaker C: Intrepid. Now, what does that mean?
• 4:50
Speaker B: It actually means brave, I believe.
• 4:52
  Speaker C: Oh, okay.
• 4:53
  Speaker B: Is that correct? Alex, you're a. You're a English major.
• 4:57
Speaker D: Brave, you know, fearless, willing to go the distance, you know?
• 5:03
Speaker B: Yeah, Yeah, I like that word, though. It's gotta get a ring to it. But the. The great Eddie V. Who's. Who's Sent you, Bosco. He sent us.
• 5:14
Speaker C: Oh, no, he died.
• 5:15
Speaker B: Loose change in the mail. No, no, he.
• 5:17
  Speaker C: He.
• 5:17
Speaker B: He. He weighed in and said that he was in a pizza place in Gulfport, Mississippi, and someone used the phrase welcome in with him, and he beat the
• 5:27
Speaker C: shit out of him. Welcome in.
• 5:28
Speaker B: Welcome in. Have you heard that yet?
• 5:31
Speaker C: He brought it up about a month ago.
• 5:32
Speaker D: Sounds like a restaurant or something.
• 5:33
  Speaker B: It's a new. No, it's a new.
• 5:35
Speaker D: Come down to the welcome Inn.
• 5:36
Speaker C: There's like a Pancake Shore Motel.
• 5:38
  Speaker B: Sure.
• 5:39
Speaker C: That's what Motel with two ends.
• 5:41
  Speaker B: Yeah.
• 5:42
Speaker C: Take care. At any time of the day, you
• 5:43
Speaker D: know, they got the. You know, the collagen up here.
• 5:46
Speaker B: College in with two. Yeah, yeah, yeah. No, this is in. Welcome in. Welcome inside. It's. It's a phrase I first heard on a. Someone used on a podcast from the west coast. And I.
• 5:57
Speaker D: It caught my ear because you welcome somebody onto your podcast with this expression, welcome in.
• 6:02
Speaker B: That's what this person did. But then I've subsequently heard, like, I was up in the northeast and I went into some kind of a little shop, like a vintage store, and the guy goes, welcome in. Oh, I thought, oh, shit, I'm here in real life now. It's making its way across the country. And then not too long ago, I heard someone use it when I was cheese fries there.
• 6:21
Speaker D: I mean, it's just at the welcome In. The welcome in.
• 6:24
Speaker B: Well, no, no, it's not the name of the place.
• 6:25
  Speaker D: I just. I don't know. I just.
• 6:26
Speaker B: I'm. I'm thinking stuck on this.
• 6:28
  Speaker D: I want it.
• 6:28
Speaker C: I hear a song coming. Alex.
• 6:31
Speaker D: No, I just. I want a chain of breakfast restaurants.
• 6:34
Speaker B: The welcome In. Okay, so anyway, I was at Rosedale last night, and the mater d. As he sat us at the table, he said, welcome in. Oh, thought, okay, now it's. Now it's making the. The.
• 6:46
Speaker C: Well, I told you last week. I heard it last week, right?
• 6:50
Speaker B: In the. In the. In the men's room.
• 6:51
Speaker C: In the men's room of a porno shop. Somebody said, welcome in.
• 6:55
  Speaker D: Welcome out.
• 6:56
Speaker C: Yeah, there you go. Get out.
• 6:58
  Speaker B: Okay.
• 7:00
  Speaker C: So.
• 7:00
Speaker B: So, yes. Welcome in. And so keep your ears peeled. Troubled nation.
• 7:05
  Speaker D: Yeah.
• 7:05
Speaker C: And you know, trouble nation. Just let it. Well, we want to just let you know. It's stupid. It's stupid. Welcome.
• 7:12
Speaker B: Welcome in. It's weird.
• 7:13
Speaker C: Yeah. I think it's like e Cigarettes. People do. Are stupid looking, you know, just smoke a cigarette, man.
• 7:20
Speaker B: Okay. Didn't say those two were related, but. But sure.
• 7:23
Speaker C: It's just stupid things.
• 7:25
  Speaker B: Yeah. Yeah.
• 7:25
Speaker C: Because most people are Stupid.
• 7:27
  Speaker B: Okay.
• 7:28
Speaker C: That's why I can't stand people. Well, because most of them are stupid.
• 7:32
  Speaker B: All right.
• 7:32
  Speaker C: Okay.
• 7:33
Speaker B: Well, yes, I think the. The odds are.
• 7:35
Speaker C: And you're welcome in, welcome out. Right?
• 7:38
  Speaker A: Right.
• 7:38
Speaker C: You know, was it D.C. harbor at his comics book shop had a sign saying, sorry, we're open. He had to sign that for years saying, sorry, we're open.
• 7:49
  Speaker B: That makes sense.
• 7:50
Speaker C: You know, but he's a good guy.
• 7:52
Speaker B: You have anything there, Manny?
• 7:54
Speaker C: I got tons of.
• 7:55
  Speaker B: Okay.
• 7:55
Speaker C: Well, you know, I saw. I saw. I was driving around town and I saw a sign that said drug problem. If you have a drug problem, call a friend.
• 8:11
Speaker D: Well, that's exactly what you do.
• 8:12
Speaker C: Well, no, and I wouldn't do that because when I had it back in the 90s, when I was a 10 year run of a junkie, all my friends were junkies. So why would I call them?
• 8:22
  Speaker B: Oh, right.
• 8:23
Speaker C: You know, what are they gonna do for me? They're just gonna give me more drugs. All right?
• 8:27
Speaker D: Because I guess there's a different kind of drug problem than not having drugs, right?
• 8:31
Speaker C: Yeah. You have a drug problem, call a friend.
• 8:34
Speaker D: That's the only drug problem I know.
• 8:35
Speaker C: I used to call friends and they, you know, they'd give me money to go away.
• 8:39
  Speaker D: Yeah.
• 8:39
Speaker C: That kind of thing. So I just thought that was kind of weird, you know, I can't imagine calling a friend, you got a drug problem. I just saw this sign recently.
• 8:48
Speaker B: Okay. You know, well, you know, I saw a sign that, that caught my eye. It said, get Hep C free. I thought, isn't it always free?
• 8:57
Speaker D: Yeah, it's. It's free and it's like in it and it stays free.
• 9:01
Speaker B: Yeah, but I don't know, it hangs around. Yeah. Oh, yeah. Oh, yeah.
• 9:06
Speaker C: But you welcome it in.
• 9:08
Speaker B: You welcome in. Okay.
• 9:09
Speaker C: You welcome it in. But. Yeah, Then I also saw recently, I was flipping the channels, you know, my. Our. My good friend Wadzilla, he set me up before he moved, before he died and moved to Seattle. He set me up with this system. I got over like 8,000 TV channels.
• 9:28
  Speaker B: Crazy.
• 9:29
Speaker C: Yeah, it's amazing. It's amazing. I can watch TV shows in Australia and Europe.
• 9:35
Speaker B: Watch TV shows from the future.
• 9:38
Speaker C: I don't know. I haven't even got to all of them.
• 9:40
  Speaker B: Right, right, right.
• 9:40
Speaker C: But I saw this TV show that's based here in Louisiana. It's called Drunk Hunting. Okay, Drunk Hunting. Where basically it's two, like, forest rangers arresting drunks who are shooting guns.
• 9:57
  Speaker B: Okay.
• 9:58
Speaker C: And it was pretty good. It was a pretty good show.
• 10:01
Speaker D: What's the strategy of approaching a drunk hunter.
• 10:04
Speaker C: Well, the strategy is you shoot first. Oh, yeah, Just hit, just hit him like in the knee or something. Get him down the ankle. And then they just beat the. Out of them.
• 10:17
  Speaker B: Yeah.
• 10:17
Speaker C: You know, because usually when they, they arrest these drunk hunters, none of them have hunting licenses.
• 10:23
  Speaker B: Sure.
• 10:24
Speaker C: You know, and they all have, you know, MAGA hats on, and it's like one step below duck dynasty.
• 10:32
  Speaker B: Oh, wow.
• 10:32
Speaker C: You know, so you're talking way, way down there.
• 10:35
  Speaker B: Plumbing the depths.
• 10:36
Speaker C: Yeah. So anyway, yeah, I saw that. I thought that was interesting. But I. I was hoping our, our bartender, Juan was going to be around today because, you know, that guy is. That guy is amazing. You know, he just got married.
• 10:50
  Speaker B: Yes.
• 10:51
Speaker C: You went to high school with him, right?
• 10:52
  Speaker B: Yes, I did.
• 10:53
Speaker C: Yes. And so you. Did you have any classes with him?
• 10:56
Speaker B: You know, I can't recall. He was only there the first year and then his family moved to like, Slidell or something like that.
• 11:01
Speaker C: I got you. I got you. Well, over the weekend, I was hanging out with our fearless, you know, Dave Clemens Clempire and. Yeah. And Juan, you know, this guy is so smart, man. Oh, yeah, he's smart. He. He actually this is the weird. He. He taught his dog because, you know, he's a big dog guy. He talk. He taught his dog to hump his leg in the missionary position. Very crazy. How can you do that? I don't know.
• 11:38
Speaker B: I thought, okay, you know, because usually
• 11:41
Speaker C: dogs hump your doggy style. You.
• 11:42
  Speaker B: Oh, okay.
• 11:43
Speaker C: You know, but he never dog to hump the leg. Missionary position.
• 11:47
Speaker B: All right, all right. Well, he's an innovator.
• 11:49
Speaker C: Well, you know, he's a smart guy.
• 11:51
Speaker B: He worked for Goldman Sachs for a while, so.
• 11:52
Speaker C: Yeah. And look where he is now.
• 11:55
Speaker B: Yeah. Goldman Sachs Trek. Speaking of, of, of drunk people, I saw in the news this was a week or so ago. This poor guy, I feel sorry for him. A former city councilman, Jared Brussett.
• 12:11
  Speaker C: Oh, yeah.
• 12:12
Speaker B: That he's arrested again on Memorial Day weekend for his fourth time getting arrested on a DWI charge. It's tough, man. And, and I remember he's going to
• 12:25
Speaker D: do any, like, real time.
• 12:27
Speaker B: Well, I mean, I don't know how the these cases were. Were wrapped up in the past. He may not have actually had to plead guilty to dwi, might have been adjudicated in some other way, but at some point they start putting you in jail for this. Now, now, but, but what I've noticed in the at least three of these cases is they find him somewhere like asleep or an ugly Way to put it is passed out in the car
• 12:55
Speaker D: now, less than charitable way.
• 12:56
Speaker B: It's a less than charitable way of putting it. You're asleep, right? You're just asleep. He's very tired, but.
• 13:03
Speaker C: Well, at least he's not driving.
• 13:05
Speaker B: He's not driving. And here's the thing. He must. If, if you take the keys out of the ignition and put them on the seat, they can't arrest you for dwi. You're just sleeping in your car. So he must have the keys in the ignition in each case for them to be able to charge him with this. So troubled nation, if you can't make it home, you think you need to pull over to the side and sleep it off a little bit. Take the keys out of the ignition, put them there in the seat.
• 13:31
Speaker C: Is that in every state, though, or just here?
• 13:34
Speaker B: I'm not sure about that. I think it's pretty much everywhere. Because in your car, it's just a box.
• 13:39
Speaker C: That guy had a promising career and he blew it.
• 13:42
  Speaker B: Well.
• 13:43
Speaker C: And be working at the welcome In.
• 13:45
Speaker B: Well, no, I'll tell you what. Because. Because he currently has a job as director of Public affairs for the Downtown Development District.
• 13:54
  Speaker D: Oh, yeah.
• 13:55
  Speaker B: So.
• 13:55
  Speaker C: And not anymore.
• 13:57
Speaker B: So in each case. No, he.
• 13:59
Speaker D: He was. He was. City is littered with this kind of. These kind of people work for these sort of agencies.
• 14:05
Speaker B: Right, Right. They shift you from one to. To another. You know, they got. They got it somewhere else. Another cushy place, a golden parachute for you to, To. To land somewhere. So anyway, I hope he can get it together and take those keys out of the ignition next time.
• 14:22
Speaker C: Yeah, he'll suck the exhaust fumes for the breathalyzer test.
• 14:28
  Speaker B: Okay.
• 14:28
  Speaker C: I don't know. I. I had a few things, but let's get to our guest.
• 14:31
  Speaker B: Okay.
• 14:31
Speaker C: He's exciting to me.
• 14:33
Speaker B: Right on. Right on.
• 14:34
Speaker C: Well, known him for a long time.
• 14:36
Speaker B: We have known him for a long time. We've known him in many different capacities. He's. He was our bartender at times. He was a guru, counselor, boy scout leader. And hats, a lot of hats.
• 14:51
  Speaker D: Yeah.
• 14:51
Speaker B: Yeah. Well, I was going to talk about
• 14:54
Speaker C: something else, but go for it.
• 14:55
Speaker B: Well, I was going to say I was down at the. The Tall Ships. You know, they had the Sail 250, saw the tall Ships on Friday. There's the Klemper right now, walking out.
• 15:07
Speaker C: Yeah, you know, I. My wife went down to there and I said to her, aren't all ships tall? I mean, every ship I've ever seen is tall. Yeah, they're massive. They're Huge.
• 15:16
Speaker B: The. The masts are tall. The tall sails.
• 15:18
  Speaker C: It's.
• 15:18
Speaker B: And these were, you know, so. And. And I think our guest actually was down there that. I think they hired you to. To perform down there at the tall ships, correct?
• 15:27
Speaker D: That's correct, Yes. I. In my capacity as, you know, chairman and CEO of the only Second Line sea shanty outfit in Orleans Parish.
• 15:42
  Speaker B: Orleans Parish. Okay.
• 15:44
Speaker D: So, I mean, if you're gonna, you know. And. Yeah, so, yeah, we were there.
• 15:49
Speaker B: So you were impressed? Mightily impressed. You know, mildly impressed.
• 15:53
Speaker D: I'm not. I'm not like, sort of, you know, I love. I love ships. I love nautical history. I, you know, I. Obviously there's, you know, the songs I've been dealing with for many years.
• 16:05
Speaker C: So you were upset with the pay, though.
• 16:07
Speaker D: There's. There is an issue. We've got some issues with that.
• 16:10
Speaker C: Yeah, exactly. So the tall.
• 16:13
Speaker D: Yeah, well, you know.
• 16:14
Speaker C: You know, my wife came home. She said she had been to it before because they come here every few years or something, and she wasn't impressed this year with it.
• 16:23
Speaker D: I mean, I thought it was lovely. We actually, my son and I rode our bikes down the other. I guess it was Friday or Saturday. Friday or Thursday, I can't remember. And, you know, we managed to get on a boat and.
• 16:35
  Speaker C: They're not boats.
• 16:37
  Speaker D: It's a boat. It's a ship.
• 16:38
  Speaker B: I don't care.
• 16:38
Speaker D: You know, we got the. The one from Colombia.
• 16:42
Speaker C: Oh, I bet you got the one from Colombia. Fine.
• 16:46
Speaker D: Colombian. Yeah, you know that's right.
• 16:51
Speaker C: How old's your kid?
• 16:52
  Speaker D: He's 12.
• 16:53
Speaker C: Old enough to smuggle, huh?
• 16:55
Speaker D: Well, you know, he's old enough to be a mule. Colombian Navy.
• 16:58
  Speaker B: Wow.
• 16:59
Speaker D: Because. And he'll fit in the uniform.
• 17:01
  Speaker A: Yeah.
• 17:01
Speaker D: So they'll take him.
• 17:02
Speaker B: Sure. Right, right, right.
• 17:04
Speaker D: So I was down there just trying to checking things out. You know, I'm like, listen, there's, you know, this could be your future for you. But he, you know, he doesn't want to, you know, climb up the ropes. He doesn't want to go up to the Crow's Nest. It's not. He's not a heights guy.
• 17:17
Speaker B: Yeah, I hear you. I wouldn't want to do that either. It looked terrifying.
• 17:20
Speaker D: Yeah. But that's. Apparently they came up the river and they were all, there's guys up on the mass. And it was. The wind was whipping and full sail. Yeah.
• 17:29
  Speaker A: Real.
• 17:29
  Speaker D: A real sight.
• 17:30
Speaker B: Oh, yeah. No, I would have loved to have seen that. Well, okay, let's. Let's get to our guest.
• 17:34
Speaker C: Yeah. Next weekend, the big shits are Coming.
• 17:37
  Speaker B: Okay.
• 17:37
Speaker C: It's a whole exhibit down by the river.
• 17:39
  Speaker B: All right.
• 17:40
Speaker C: Yeah. Okay, I'll go to that. I'm actually participating in it.
• 17:45
Speaker B: All right, I can see that.
• 17:47
  Speaker D: Yeah, you're. You're a very big.
• 17:49
Speaker C: I'm a big. I got my bit on, too. You see my shit on? Yeah, yeah.
• 17:55
Speaker D: How many shits did you have today?
• 17:56
Speaker C: 2. Oh, Jason, you know the greatest thing about this?
• 17:59
Speaker D: I only have to charge that thing to log all that.
• 18:02
Speaker C: You just charge it overnight while you're sleeping.
• 18:05
  Speaker D: Okay.
• 18:05
Speaker C: But the greatest thing about this? It actually tells you how much time you got to get to a toilet. That's.
• 18:14
Speaker D: That's why you have.
• 18:15
Speaker C: So when you're percolating, I could tell
• 18:18
Speaker D: you how many shits I. I have a day without the watch.
• 18:21
Speaker C: Really? Yeah. But this warns you, because at my age, I could probably tell. Yeah. At my age, it's like, you know, it's like you start perking and go, well, I got a few minutes. And now they're saying, no, don't get. No, you don't. You gotta go find a toilet now.
• 18:35
  Speaker B: Okay.
• 18:35
Speaker C: You know, you've got 20 seconds and counting. You know, it's like a countdown.
• 18:40
Speaker D: How much for that watch?
• 18:41
Speaker C: Like, how much for this watch? It's not a watch. Well, it doesn't tell time. Well, I mean, I don't know. It was a gift from my proctologist.
• 18:49
  Speaker B: Oh, okay.
• 18:50
Speaker D: I would buy one.
• 18:51
Speaker C: Yeah, get one. All right.
• 18:53
Speaker B: To get a sponsorship for the show. All right. Well, our guest, as Alex, as Manny said, we've known him for many years. He's an award winning guitar player, songwriter, singer, band leader. Has bands such as the 10 men, Alex McMurray band, kings of the small time. He's also played in bands such as Michael Ward and Reward. He's a founding member of the Royal Finger Bowl 007. Played in the Glenn Styler Rock Band, Susan Cassill Band. He plays with the Geraniums. He's mentioning that he's also the founder and main driver behind the Valparaiso Men's Corner Chorus. Also a member of the Wright Brothers, Tom Paynes and the Happy Talk Band. On and on and on. We're gonna get out into all that and much more. But without further ado, the great Mr. Alex McMurray. Welcome, Alex.
• 19:43
Speaker D: Hey, thanks for having me and.
• 19:46
Speaker B: Oh, thank you for being had.
• 19:48
Speaker C: You've been on the show before.
• 19:50
  Speaker A: I have.
• 19:50
Speaker B: He has been on the show before. He appeared on troubled Men podcast 13130 back during the the pandemic. It was November of 2020. I think he just put out his. His record, the Lucky One.
• 20:05
  Speaker C: And the.
• 20:05
Speaker B: The title of. The record of the episode is Alex McMurray is the Lucky One.
• 20:10
Speaker D: Oh, that's. Wow, that's. And you have an amazing memory.
• 20:14
Speaker B: Well, and I. I looked some of this up. I was showing you, showing off that I had the notebook with the original notes here.
• 20:20
  Speaker D: Oh, all right.
• 20:21
Speaker B: Right beside me. So, you know, with some of this we covered before, and some will be recovering. But you're not born in New Orleans. You're not from here.
• 20:30
  Speaker C: No, no.
• 20:31
Speaker B: Tell us, where'd you come from? Where do you hail from?
• 20:34
Speaker D: I'm from a state called New Jersey.
• 20:36
Speaker B: Oh, yes. I've been there.
• 20:38
Speaker D: And a town called Red Bank, New Jersey, born and raised. Lived there Till I was 18, and then I came down here to go to Tulane University, which is.
• 20:46
Speaker C: But you didn't want to come to Tulane. You wanted to go to Oregon.
• 20:50
Speaker D: I wanted to go, so I, you know.
• 20:52
Speaker C: You wanted to go to Oregon.
• 20:53
Speaker D: I want to go a lot of places. One of the places was. Was in.
• 20:58
Speaker C: I remember that you said Oregon.
• 21:00
  Speaker B: Really?
• 21:01
  Speaker D: Yeah.
• 21:02
Speaker C: Because you wanted to write lumberjack songs.
• 21:04
  Speaker D: I wanted to.
• 21:05
Speaker C: I wanted to work in a cannery.
• 21:07
Speaker D: I just, you know, I wanted to climb.
• 21:09
Speaker C: You wanted out of Jersey?
• 21:10
Speaker D: Yeah, I wanted as far away from Jersey as possible.
• 21:13
  Speaker C: Yeah.
• 21:13
Speaker D: No, but I. I ended up going to Tulane because they gave me financial aid, and so it was like. It was cheaper.
• 21:19
Speaker C: Which you're still paying back, right?
• 21:21
Speaker D: No, no, it was all just grants.
• 21:25
Speaker B: And you came down here and got a degree in writing? English. English.
• 21:30
Speaker D: Philosophy. Double major English and philosophy. Or as I call it, dishwashing and drying.
• 21:35
  Speaker C: Yeah, exactly.
• 21:37
Speaker D: Because my job. The job I got after school was at a place called the Billabong Bakery over on Calhoun.
• 21:44
  Speaker B: Oh, yeah.
• 21:44
Speaker D: On the other side of Claiborne. Right behind the frost top. I can't conjure the names of the people that it was. Was the guy. Ah, forget it. All I know is that, like, one of the. One of the. The only customer was David Torkanowski.
• 21:59
  Speaker A: Huh.
• 22:00
Speaker D: Who would come in and He's a peach. Antagonize me.
• 22:03
Speaker B: Yeah, I could see that. Torture you. Well, I guess he was just kind of tempering you.
• 22:10
Speaker D: He was. No, it's. Whatever.
• 22:12
Speaker C: So it was a bakery, and you had a bakery. You baked bread and stuff.
• 22:15
Speaker D: I was the. I was the counter guy in the morning, and then I washed dishes.
• 22:19
Speaker C: So. Okay, so you weren't a baker.
• 22:21
Speaker D: I was the. I was not a baker. I was the dishwasher.
• 22:24
Speaker B: You weren't qualified with for your degree to be the baker. No, no dishwashing and drying.
• 22:30
Speaker C: But you gave out advice.
• 22:31
Speaker D: I. No one sought advice from me.
• 22:35
  Speaker C: Really?
• 22:35
  Speaker D: No, I.
• 22:36
  Speaker C: But you philosophize.
• 22:38
Speaker D: I did not philosophize. I made change and I poured coffee.
• 22:42
Speaker B: Now, were you already playing music at this point, like back in New Jersey? Starting in little bands, you know, bands
• 22:49
Speaker D: with my friends in high school and stuff, and playing, like, at parties and already writing songs? No, not really.
• 22:55
  Speaker B: Okay.
• 22:56
Speaker D: Not until I got to Tulane and I fell in with, like, Glenn Hartman. And we had a little band at Tulane, me and Glenn and a few other guys, and we called the Vince Berman Trio. And Glenn was writing songs and Pete Kelly, the other guitar player, was writing songs. And so I figured I better write songs, too.
• 23:20
  Speaker B: Okay, sure.
• 23:21
Speaker D: I'll be passed over.
• 23:23
Speaker B: Right, Right. Got to get your. Get your foot in the door there.
• 23:26
  Speaker D: Yeah.
• 23:26
  Speaker C: Now.
• 23:27
Speaker B: So you're playing with those guys. How do you. I know what. When we came into Snake and Jake's Christmas Club lounge here, you were saying that you hadn't been here in over 30 years, since.
• 23:38
Speaker D: I think it's been about 30 years since I've been in here.
• 23:40
Speaker B: Since you were here with Michael Ward?
• 23:42
Speaker D: Yeah, I used to come hang out here with Mike Ward after they closed down the Maple Leaf, you know, back when I was in his band. And I was in his band until, I think it was. Until about 96 now.
• 23:54
Speaker C: Who is Michael Ward?
• 23:55
Speaker D: Michael Ward was a local character, is. His image is still on the. Behind the bar at Maple Leaf. He was a percussionist, raconteur, man about town. Yes. Personality.
• 24:14
Speaker B: He would be here every night from, like, I don't know, midnight till 4am or something. Holding it down with Feral Declue and Jun Yamagishi.
• 24:24
Speaker D: But his. His uncle was hanging out, too. You know, it was like he. You know, he hung out. It was. But he was, you know, he played in Walter Wolfman's band, you know, on Saturday nights at the Maple Leaf.
• 24:38
Speaker B: Terrific percussionist. Really played that New Orleans style of percussion in the. In the style of like, Uganda Roberts.
• 24:44
Speaker D: Yeah, he was. That was his kind of bag. And he was, you know, he was just such a. He was like my. He was like my best friend, or I thought he was for about two years. I was in the band for about two and a half years now.
• 24:54
Speaker B: How did. How did he find you?
• 24:56
Speaker D: Well, again, because I was playing with Glenn and. Glenn and Jonathan Froehlich were in Mike's band, and it was like. It was. It was Mike and Theral and Daryl Johnson.
• 25:10
  Speaker C: Right.
• 25:11
Speaker D: And, you know, I think Willie. They did. They did some kind of recording project with Willie and Daryl and. And Thel and Mike. And, you know, Daryl had songs that he was writing with Thel and stuff. And Ward was involved with that. And then like, Glenn and Frick were both like, I don't want to do this anymore. And Frick said, hey, do you want this gig? And I said, yeah, I'll take it. And so suddenly I'm playing with. With Mike and Lee. Lee Alcorn became the drummer. And then we had like, a succession of, you know, about 30 bass players in two years.
• 25:49
  Speaker B: Sure.
• 25:50
Speaker D: I used to call the band. The band was called Mike Ward and Reward. I called it Mike Hearst and Rehearse because. Because, you know, we had a different bass player every week, except for, like, Doug Terry and was. Lasted a while. And a guy named Jimmy Ives was in the band for a little while anyway. So I was in that band for about two and a half years. And this is where we'd hang out. We'd hang out here at it was the Christmas Tree or over at the Maple Leaf or even at, like, Muddy Waters. I mean, I remember hanging out at Muddy Waters with Ward.
• 26:24
  Speaker B: Yeah.
• 26:25
Speaker D: Sitting at the bar, and here's where he told me. I said to him, mike, what's. What's. Because he had, you know, he always had all these girlfriends. I was like, mike, what's your secret with women? And he said, tight trousers. He said, yeah, they're checking you out just like you're checking them. You gotta get in. So. So he took me shopping, but I was living on Royal and Mary. And he came over in his, you know, his enormous car, picked me up, took me to the solo serve out in the East. He took me a bunch of, like, places. Also, he didn't like the way I looked in the band. Like, he needed me to have. Wear classier shit. I needed like, a shirt with a collar at least. You know, I was real scruffy and, you know, so he took me shopping and he used to take me out on Sunday nights. Take me to, like, the Showcase Lounge and Pampy's Tight Squeeze.
• 27:14
  Speaker B: Oh, wow.
• 27:15
Speaker D: And, you know, I remember there's the other Mike Ward. Remember? The violin player?
• 27:19
Speaker B: Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah.
• 27:20
Speaker D: So, like, Mike Ward would play every Sunday at Pampy's. And we'd go there every, every, every. Every Sunday, me and Mike. And he'd be like, hey, go, go, go sit in with those guys. And I'd be like, oh, those. They don't Want to say go. You know, you're not. So here.
• 27:36
Speaker C: You're wearing tight pants.
• 27:37
Speaker D: I was at that point. I was wearing tight pants. Tight trousers. And so I would go sit in with the other Mike Ward.
• 27:44
  Speaker B: Oh, cool.
• 27:45
Speaker D: Or whoever was playing Sharon Martin down at the showcase. And he took me around to some crazy, crazy places, man. It was a lot of fun.
• 27:52
Speaker B: Yeah, that's. That was a great person to meet as your. Your. Your ambassador to New Orleans degenerate underworld.
• 28:00
Speaker D: He really brought me under his wing and showed me around, and it was out.
• 28:04
Speaker C: And where is he today?
• 28:06
  Speaker D: He's dead.
• 28:07
  Speaker B: He passed away.
• 28:08
Speaker D: He's dead for good.
• 28:09
  Speaker B: Long.
• 28:09
Speaker D: Almost 30 years now.
• 28:11
  Speaker C: Okay.
• 28:12
Speaker B: Probably. Probably closer to 20, but sure.
• 28:15
Speaker D: No, he was. No, he died. It was probably about 98, maybe 99. I mean, that was. That's.
• 28:22
Speaker B: Yikes, man. Time is flying by.
• 28:25
Speaker D: I'll never forget it because, remember, the Royal Finger bowl was driving out of town and we had our first cell phone. It was actually Scott Ages cell phone. And we got a call in the car, and it was, you know, somebody telling us that Mike Ward had died. It was like. Like, where were you when Kennedy was shot?
• 28:43
  Speaker B: Right, right.
• 28:46
Speaker D: You're on the Causeway going to Baton Rouge.
• 28:50
Speaker B: Very sad. Very sad. Especially because Causeway doesn't go to Baton Rouge. But anyway.
• 28:54
Speaker D: Well, there's Causeway. It's a. It's a. Whatever. The bridge, the highway. When you're, you know, when you.
• 29:01
Speaker C: It is a. Carlo driving.
• 29:03
Speaker D: Carlo was not driving.
• 29:05
  Speaker C: Carlo.
• 29:05
Speaker D: Carlo was in the passenger seat. Pat Ryan was driving.
• 29:10
  Speaker C: Okay.
• 29:10
Speaker D: And I was sitting in the back seat with Andy Wolf.
• 29:14
Speaker B: Oh, right on. I think this might be the first time Pat has shown up on this podcast being mentioned, but, well, well done, Alex.
• 29:22
  Speaker D: Hey, man.
• 29:22
Speaker B: Shout out. Shout out to Patrick.
• 29:26
  Speaker C: So.
• 29:26
Speaker B: Well, you bring up a Royal Finger bowl. So it's. At some point the. The Michael Ward and. And reward ends.
• 29:34
Speaker D: No, no. Well, no, I. Because I. He had a gig. Ward had a gig. And I said, I can't make
• 29:42
  Speaker B: was
• 29:42
Speaker D: like a Saturday night or something. And he said, why can't you make it? I said, well, because I got a bit. I got a gig with my band, which was Royal Finger Bowl. Right. It was like. We just started. He said, what? What's this band? I'm like, it's like, what's band? I said, what? Like, he's like, what? Tell me about the band. I'm like, well, it's like, you know, I'm writing songs I've written and stuff. He's like, all right, bitch. That was it. He just like, never call me again.
• 30:05
  Speaker B: Oh, jeez.
• 30:06
Speaker D: Yeah, yeah. He just was like. He just saw. I was like, yeah, I'd love to make. You know, I just can't make this one, you know.
• 30:12
Speaker B: Right. Just didn't like the idea that you had any other affiliations.
• 30:16
Speaker D: Well, he saw that, like, I was writing because, you know, writing songs.
• 30:22
Speaker B: Right. He could see where that was going to lead.
• 30:24
Speaker D: And I didn't write songs for the reward.
• 30:26
  Speaker C: Right.
• 30:26
  Speaker D: You know.
• 30:27
  Speaker C: Right.
• 30:29
Speaker B: Figured, okay, well, go do your thing.
• 30:30
Speaker D: And yeah, it's like, I think it's your kindness. It was a. It was a kindness.
• 30:35
Speaker B: That's. When I first meet you is you're in Royal Finger bowl and you had Kevin o' Day playing drums originally, and then. Then Kelly Keller is managing Glenn Styler and hooks up you and Glenn Styler and these Yeller, backing him up on a recording session. I. I wind up playing bass on that recording session at. At Kingsway. But that was kind of our first. First times working together. And then subsequently from that, I would maybe play keyboards on some gigs we did in south by Southwest backing up Glenn Styler.
• 31:15
Speaker D: Yeah, you know, there's a. There's a great. I did find. Forgotten about this, actually. Casey McAllister. Remember Casey, right?
• 31:24
Speaker B: Oh, yeah, yeah. Just saw him not too long ago.
• 31:26
Speaker D: Yeah. He. He recently got obsessed with. With Glenn style.
• 31:30
  Speaker B: Yeah, yeah, yeah.
• 31:31
Speaker D: And he sent me a video from the. The Green Street Grill in Cambridge, Manhattan. Right. And there's like the. The. The video is terrible because it's so dark, but it's basically Styler Band, which is the Finger bowl, plus Jeff Treffinger, huh? Doing like, if only I could hurt you and that kind of stuff, you know?
• 31:53
  Speaker B: Right, right.
• 31:53
Speaker D: And I'd like, oh, wait, I forgot all about. I totally forgot, like, this whole repertoire that we had. Like, we did like the Pusher man and all that stuff. Oh, yeah, it's killer. Oh, yeah, it sounds great.
• 32:04
  Speaker B: Yeah, yeah.
• 32:05
Speaker D: And then two guitars and the 90s holding it down. Kevin's brilliant.
• 32:09
  Speaker B: Right, right.
• 32:11
Speaker D: I was like, wow, forgot all about this shit.
• 32:13
  Speaker A: Yeah. Yeah.
• 32:14
Speaker B: Well, we have. You know, when you have so many things, you know, you can't remember them all, but. But yeah, Casey did approach me recently saying, hey, I've. I've stumbled on this guy Glenn Styler, because I was watching. We were watching Doris Wishman movies on the road late at night in a hotel room, and he shows up up in. In Satan Was a Lady. And so do you. And so. So tell me about this guy. I was like, oh, started telling me.
• 32:44
Speaker D: So he's obsessed. I sent him. I guess there was like a.
• 32:49
  Speaker B: A.
• 32:50
Speaker D: An. Just a. A CD of demos that you were making with. With Brent, like, you know, the Joker and all that stuff.
• 32:57
Speaker B: Right, right. All bossa nova stuff, the basa stuff.
• 33:00
  Speaker D: What was.
• 33:01
  Speaker C: What.
• 33:01
Speaker D: I mean, I sent all that to Casey. I was like, if you like the. I mean, I don't know what this is, but it's. I got it from Renee years ago.
• 33:10
Speaker B: Yeah, well. Well. So. So royal finger bowl leads you. So at some point, Kevin o' Day leaves finger bowl, and.
• 33:19
Speaker D: And, yeah, he quit the band pretty soon after the check cleared. And. And then Carlo, you know, we needed. Kevin quit. We're just starting a tour. We were in Austin, Texas, and it wasn't like there was, you know, any acrimony, but he just said, listen, I'm. You know, I'm gonna not do this after this. And I was like, huh? Okay. So I called Glenn Hartman. I was like, hey. Because Glenn was playing with Carlo in Anders Osborne's band. And I called Glenn and say, hey, man, I. You know, Kevin's gonna leave the finger bowl. I don't know know what to do, but I think I. What about Carlo? You know, should I call Carlo? Because I didn't know him. He just kind of terrified me.
• 34:01
  Speaker B: Oh, sure.
• 34:02
  Speaker C: Because I knew.
• 34:03
Speaker D: I knew that he liked the band.
• 34:05
  Speaker B: Uhhuh.
• 34:05
Speaker D: You know, because we'd done a gig with Anders, and apparently he, like, made everybody in the dressing rooms, like, stop talking so that he could listen to the finger bowl, like, through the window of the, you know, dressing room.
• 34:17
  Speaker B: Okay.
• 34:17
  Speaker C: Nice.
• 34:18
Speaker D: At the house blues. I don't know. So Glenn. Glenn's like. Well, you know. Yeah, he'll probably join the band, but do know that he will steal the band to go buy drugs, like, at. As soon as. You know, as soon as he walks. As soon as he's there.
• 34:37
  Speaker B: Right.
• 34:38
Speaker C: The other guy, quick. When the check cleared and when Carlo joined, the check bounced.
• 34:42
  Speaker D: Yeah, right.
• 34:43
Speaker C: You know, you're lucky he didn't sell the van for drugs.
• 34:47
Speaker D: Yeah, well, it's. Yeah, I mean, it's like, you know, he's great.
• 34:50
Speaker C: Bob Forrest from Thelonious Monster.
• 34:52
  Speaker D: Yeah.
• 34:53
Speaker C: He hooked up with this chick from the Carolinas when he was crazy, going nuts on drugs. And he said, honey, let me borrow your car. I'll be right back. She had a Beamer. He sold her Beamer for crack.
• 35:07
Speaker D: That's. Now there. There's a guy with a little bit of ambition.
• 35:10
  Speaker C: Yeah.
• 35:11
Speaker B: You know, probably didn't get what it was worth, though.
• 35:14
Speaker D: I mean, he probably got pennies on the dollar. He probably stayed high for hours.
• 35:19
Speaker B: Sure. Well, now I do remember at some point after Carlo had been in the band for a while and I ran into you, I said, yeah, how's it going, Alex? And. And you said, I, you know, just working for the. Yeah. Oh, okay. Well, yeah, that makes sense because, you know, Carlo would tend to. To take over through force of personality and just like, it would be a fait accompli, you know. Yeah, well, that's everybody.
• 35:47
Speaker D: It was like. It was like he was Saturn or. No, Jupiter. Jupiter and like. Or the sun, the gravity just sucked everything. It's like you can't. You just. You will. Suddenly you are revolving around. Because that's. You just become in his orbit and then that's it, you know. So, you know, for good or ill, that's. I mean, we were. Until. Until I had to quit the Finger bowl, it was. We were pretty. We were together all the time.
• 36:20
Speaker B: Right, Right, right. And you wind up going to. To Disney and Tokyo and playing there for a while, which is as Captain Sandy, which was kind of your entree into the seashell.
• 36:37
Speaker D: That was after, like, I said, I quit Finger Bowl. I quit. Carlo was basically what it. Carlo was the Finger Bowl. And I called him on the day that Dino's daughter was born, and I was like, carlos, I got to quit the Finger Bowl. And he, you know, he was upset and. And it was, you know what I was like. I felt. Never felt lighter.
• 37:01
  Speaker B: Yeah.
• 37:04
Speaker D: Because Carlo was by then was, you know, drifting into the arena of the unwell, as it were.
• 37:11
  Speaker C: Right.
• 37:12
Speaker D: And so that was in the fall of 2001. And then almost like right around then, I got invited to audition for Disney by Adam Shipley or an associate of Adam Shipley's, and I didn't get the gig doing sea shanties at the Tokyo Disneysea, not Disneyland, right next door. And. But they did call me the following contract six months later, right after Jazz Fest 2002, and offered me the job. And so, you know, good money for a guy like me. And so, you know, I was, you know, it was right after 9 11. I was right after Carla Nuccio. So, you know, why not Looking for
• 37:59
Speaker B: a clean start somewhere?
• 38:00
Speaker D: You know, it was nice. It was a nice time to be away from America and Carlo Nuccio.
• 38:06
  Speaker B: Okay.
• 38:07
  Speaker C: It's a very clean country.
• 38:10
Speaker D: Yeah, it's. Yeah, it's a clean country. There's no. Nobody's driving airplanes into it, and there's no Carlo.
• 38:16
  Speaker C: Yeah.
• 38:18
Speaker B: Now. Now I'm kind of accelerating Here you, you, you come back from Japan, you start playing around town again. You, you at some point, you. You start the band, the Ten Men.
• 38:32
Speaker D: Ten Men started right. Right around the time that the Finger bowl died, so fall of 2001.
• 38:37
Speaker B: And now you and I have played in a whole number of bands together since then. We played in the Glenn Styler Rock Band together before. Before this with Carlo and Jeff Treffinger and, and. But more recently, we've, We've been doing this Clash Day, the, The Radio Clash All Stars. We've done four of those. And, and that's. That's been great. So, you know, you know you. And we'll talk about that a little bit more. We've developed through that a kind of shorthand in terms of referring to band guys in almost military terms. Like guys that you would be in a foxhole with.
• 39:19
Speaker D: Yeah, well, you know, like when you're. We listen to, like, military history podcasts like I've been doing lately, you learn or you're reminded that the guys that are under fire, they're not doing it for. For the country. They're not doing it for. For principles or high ideals. You're doing it for your. The guy next to you in the foxhole. That's what you're, that's who you're fighting for, and that's. That's what, you know, playing in a karaoke rock band is. Is. Is for me. Like, you know, you're there to learn. I'm. Yes, Sarge. Yes, sir. Yes, Sergeant. I'm going to learn these 40 tunes and I'm going to do my damnedest. Not because I need to know how to play Duran Duran or I want to, but because I don't want to let the guy down next to me.
• 40:08
  Speaker C: Right.
• 40:09
Speaker D: As the bullets fly. You know, metaphorically.
• 40:13
Speaker B: Sure. There are certain people that I'm always. I feel safe when they're next to me on the bandstand. You're one of them that I know that whatever happens, I can count on you. You're going to keep your head about you. You know, you're not going to. Not going to wash out on me. And I can. When the fur is flying, I can rely on you to bear down.
• 40:37
Speaker D: Well, you know. Well, I've definitely been in the shit.
• 40:40
Speaker B: Right. Right. Right. So we're recently. We were on this Big Easy cruise together, and you were there with the, with the 10 men. I was there with Susan Cassil. And you're also running the, the, the jam sessions every night.
• 40:58
  Speaker D: Yeah.
• 40:59
Speaker B: And you approached me and you Gave me a CD from Carlo that, that you had. And I was aware of the cd. I hadn't gotten one yet. And you said. You said maybe we could come on the podcast, which I was surprised that you would ever want to come on the podcast again, but we could talk about the cd.
• 41:19
Speaker D: So this is. This is all my fault, you're saying?
• 41:22
  Speaker B: Well, I'm saying it's. It's.
• 41:23
  Speaker C: We're.
• 41:24
Speaker B: We're. We all. No one has clean hands here.
• 41:26
  Speaker D: Okay?
• 41:26
  Speaker B: Is my point.
• 41:27
Speaker D: I, like I. I wrote. I raised my hand, my dirty hand for this.
• 41:32
  Speaker B: Yes, you did.
• 41:32
Speaker D: Such is the power of Carl and Uchio.
• 41:34
  Speaker B: That's right.
• 41:38
Speaker D: Drive uptown, schlep uptown, sit in some shitty bar with these guys just so I can have the opportunity to talk about Carlo Duccio.
• 41:46
Speaker B: And we're. We're right at that point, but it's also. We're at the point of where we always take a little break. So, Manny, why don't you tell the people what's going on?
• 41:54
Speaker C: Alex. Troubled nation it's that time. We're gonna take a little break and we'll be right back.
• 42:01
Speaker A: It's been a long, long while Since I met someone that possessed your style Encourage too be the person that drives you and soon you will go and you still won't know how you stopped me on EAS dime well, that might just take a little more time. It's been a high I might be getting in too deep I've been calling you Still I wonder if I'm getting through and if I might sink down it's cause I wish you were around and I'm sure that I could keep it all night if we only had a little more time but time never was a prisoner's friend well, I should have known when you like me.
• 43:48
Speaker B: And we're back. Back with Mr. Manny Chevrolet. I am Renee Coleman, back with our guest, Mr. Alex McMurray. Now, Alex, I know you are familiar with the show. You are aware that this is a listener supported operation. And I'm not sure you may have actually supported the show before.
• 44:06
Speaker D: What kind of support are you?
• 44:07
Speaker B: Financial support, Moral support?
• 44:09
Speaker D: I mean, there's a. So this is a spiritual support. Okay, so there's like something coming my way.
• 44:16
  Speaker B: There's a.
• 44:17
Speaker C: Well, well, here's you get a stick.
• 44:19
  Speaker B: Here's some trouble.
• 44:22
Speaker D: I've got plenty of these stickers.
• 44:24
Speaker B: Give some to your. Your children, your son.
• 44:28
Speaker C: Put it on a tall boat.
• 44:30
Speaker B: But to that end, we have the. The PayPal and the Venmo links. And in the show, notes of every show as well as the Facebook page. Speaker C: And this. They're perfect for Father's Day.
• 45:07
  Speaker B: Yes, Yes.
• 45:08
Speaker C: T shirts are good for fathers.
• 45:11
  Speaker B: Yes.
• 45:11
Speaker C: Because most fathers are troubled if they've been around long enough.
• 45:15
  Speaker B: Sure, sure.
• 45:16
  Speaker C: They hung around.
• 45:17
Speaker B: Yeah. So check out that T shirt link. Troubled men T shirt link. And also follow us on social media, Instagram, Facebook, and rate. • 45:53
Speaker C: Is in the show because it's summer now.
• 45:55
  Speaker B: It's summertime.
• 45:56
Speaker C: And summer vacations are a big thing.
• 46:00
  Speaker D: Yes.
• 46:00
Speaker B: You know, they can feel it slowing down already in New Orleans. You can feel that, can't you, Alex?
• 46:05
Speaker D: I can. I can feel the torper.
• 46:10
Speaker C: We're all domesticated guys. You know, we have families.
• 46:13
  Speaker D: That's right.
• 46:13
Speaker C: And there's family vacations to be had during the summer, you know, but there is no such thing as fun for the whole family when there's a vacation.
• 46:24
Speaker D: It's not fun for the whole family.
• 46:25
Speaker C: Well, there's always somebody who's disgruntled at one time or another.
• 46:29
  Speaker B: Sure.
• 46:29
Speaker C: I mean, have you ever taken your kid to an amusement park?
• 46:33
Speaker D: Listen, it's. It's not a. It's. Listen, you don't know. You know, it's not a good deal unless everybody walks away a little pissed off.
• 46:40
  Speaker C: Okay.
• 46:41
Speaker B: That's what they say about any deal, Right? Yeah.
• 46:43
  Speaker C: Yeah.
• 46:43
Speaker D: You know, this is what. This is what family time is all about.
• 46:46
Speaker B: That's what families are all about.
• 46:48
  Speaker A: About.
• 46:48
  Speaker D: Yeah, Everybody.
• 46:49
Speaker C: You know, because the domestication of Alex McMurray continues, right?
• 46:54
  Speaker D: That's right.
• 46:54
Speaker C: Yeah, yeah, yeah. You had a kid. When did you have a kid?
• 46:57
  Speaker D: I never had a kid.
• 46:58
  Speaker B: My wife.
• 46:59
Speaker C: But you filmed her having a kid, right? You were there. Because I think that's. That was a big thing for a while. Filming first.
• 47:09
Speaker B: I would never do that.
• 47:10
Speaker D: But there are images.
• 47:11
Speaker C: The husband would jerk off to it about a year later know, you know, I heard that. I just hear things. I don't know, you know? Now your lovely wife, you're right. Your lovely wife Lily gave birth, what, 10, 12 years ago.
• 47:24
  Speaker D: Lily.
• 47:25
Speaker C: Yeah. Your lovely wife Lily.
• 47:27
  Speaker B: That's not enough.
• 47:28
Speaker C: Oh, what's her name?
• 47:29
  Speaker D: Courtney.
• 47:30
Speaker C: Are you sure? Absolutely. Cuz I didn't know my wife's real name until our kid was born.
• 47:36
  Speaker D: Oh, yeah, yeah.
• 47:38
Speaker C: So are you sure it's not Lily?
• 47:41
Speaker D: And maybe it is.
• 47:42
  Speaker C: Okay.
• 47:43
  Speaker B: Okay.
• 47:43
Speaker C: And then your kid's doing fine now. The therapy's okay, Everything's.
• 47:48
  Speaker D: Yeah, he's.
• 47:48
Speaker C: Now, is he musical? No, he's not musical.
• 47:54
Speaker D: Well, people ask me this all the time, like if he's playing an instrument, you know, and I tell them, but
• 47:58
Speaker C: he's 12 years old now. He's playing something. I know he is. He's playing with himself, probably, huh?
• 48:04
Speaker D: You know, it's, it's quite likely.
• 48:06
  Speaker C: Yeah.
• 48:06
Speaker D: People ask me if he's, if he's picked up an instrument, you know, I'll break his hands.
• 48:12
Speaker C: Yeah. Good for you.
• 48:15
Speaker B: Well, I always like to say, you know, I have been a cautionary tale for my children while my wife has been a role model.
• 48:23
  Speaker D: Oh, yes. Yeah.
• 48:24
Speaker B: So you may be in somewhat the same situation. Good.
• 48:30
Speaker D: You know, I used to get him from Christmas. I get them like, you know, the big book of tax law, a set of pipe wrenches, you know.
• 48:37
  Speaker A: Sure.
• 48:39
Speaker D: These are the kind of professions I think that would be, have a future.
• 48:43
Speaker B: Right, right, right. Well, particularly with the, with the AI, the, the, the pipe wrenches.
• 48:48
Speaker D: That's pipe wrenches. You know, tax law and plumbing, these are things that never go out of stock.
• 48:55
Speaker B: Plumbing, man. Absolutely. Well, so that's enough of that. Back to our guest, the great Mr. Alex McMurray. Now. So we were just on the, on the precipice of talking about this Carlo Nuccio record. So for those who, who are new to the show, our great friend Carlo Nuccio sadly passed away a few years ago. He was on the podcast a number of times. You can go back and hear him, his great voice, his great personality, but, but he's no longer with us. But you being one of the people who is still very close to him, tell us about this record.
• 49:33
Speaker D: Okay, well, you know, it's funny, I, I, I should have boned up on the, the timeline, but somewhere around 2013, Carlo started, or 2012 or 2013, he started making a record over at the Esplanade.
• 49:48
  Speaker C: Studio.
• 49:49
Speaker D: He got some money from the thread heads and he had some songs. And so me and Carlo and Joe Cabral went in and recorded two or three days of, like, bottoms, you know? And so then, like, on the third or the fourth day, Carlo calls me in the morning. We're about to go in. He's like, oh, they lost all the files, you know, and, like, so we had to do them all again. Crazy, like, and. But it kind of just took the wind out of his sails, you know?
• 50:23
Speaker B: Yeah, that's a rare occurrence for those guys, man. They're. They're.
• 50:27
Speaker D: Yeah. Anyway, it happened.
• 50:29
Speaker C: Maybe he sold them for dope.
• 50:33
Speaker B: I think he was way past.
• 50:34
Speaker D: Way past that. But. But it was. But the whole project was kind of sort of under, like, a cloud. And he. But we. We worked on it for a little while, and then, you know, and I was done. And then he. He worked with this guy, Jacques de la Tour.
• 50:54
Speaker B: Great name. I love the guy. I love his name, too. Jacques.
• 50:57
Speaker D: Yeah, Jacques is great. In fact, he's mixing something for me right now.
• 51:00
  Speaker B: Nice.
• 51:01
Speaker D: And so Carlo had done a record of. He produced my. One of my records with Jacques, engineering at Fudge, and he also did a record for Lynn Drury, produced at Fudge with Jacques. And so. And then he. So he was working, you know, so he just started working with Jacques in. In his home kind of studio, you doing, like, overdubs and stuff. So this project went on for two, three years, maybe four years, and he's, like, kind of chipping away at it and.
• 51:36
Speaker C: Oh, he was chipping, all right.
• 51:38
Speaker B: I knew you were gonna say.
• 51:39
Speaker D: And then one day, like, very quiet. I just want, like, then he just. It just sort of. He just never worked on it anymore.
• 51:47
  Speaker B: Huh.
• 51:48
Speaker D: Like, he got it to this. This point. There's a couple songs that were, like, mixed, and then the whole project, he just walked away from it.
• 51:56
  Speaker B: Okay.
• 51:56
Speaker D: Like. And, you know, it was very strange, you know, but then that was around 2017, I think. And so when Carlo died, Jacques called me, like, just a week or two after and said, hey, you know, I've got this record that is, like, you know, I still got it. It's half done. It's like. It's more than half done. Like, two songs were mixed, basically, right. And the rest of it, all we needed was, like, a little. Little odds and ends.
• 52:31
  Speaker B: Okay.
• 52:31
Speaker D: Some. Some songs only had one vocal, but it was a good. Pretty good vocal, you know? And so. So I said, well, send me the. And let me listen to it. And I listened to it, and I think wow. This is. This can totally be a record. And so I just started calling people like Susan Cassill. You know, we could put some. Some background vocals on things. And Peter Hols. Apple put some, you know, he. He did stuff at his studio. Vicky Peterson, in fact, all those Drifters people or those, you know, a lot of them did this one song. So that, that's. That was really special. And you know, like, we had horns come in on one song and, you know, we just. We just did everything that was necessary to. To sort of whip things into shape. Ivan Neville came in at the very end. Nice. And played organ. And Rhodes or Worlds are on one of the songs. And you know, he would have played on everything. He got so excited, but it was like, we've already mastered the record, dude.
• 53:41
  Speaker B: Too late.
• 53:41
Speaker D: He's like, he's like, we're like, we'll. Okay, we'll get. We could do this one song. He's like, you know, it's like, you know, it's already been.
• 53:48
  Speaker C: Right.
• 53:48
Speaker D: He came back like three weeks later. Oh, man. I got all these vocal ideas. I'm like, dude, no. So. So yeah, it was just a. It was just a, you know, kind of a joy to actually be working with Carlo again, you know, but, you
• 54:05
Speaker C: know, because he wasn't in the room,
• 54:06
Speaker D: because he wasn't there.
• 54:08
Speaker C: Yeah. Now this. This. Who makes the money now, if this makes any money.
• 54:14
  Speaker D: Carmen.
• 54:15
  Speaker C: Who does?
• 54:15
  Speaker D: Carmen.
• 54:16
  Speaker B: His widow.
• 54:17
  Speaker C: His wife.
• 54:19
  Speaker D: Yeah.
• 54:19
Speaker C: So where is she today?
• 54:21
Speaker D: She's. She lives on.
• 54:22
Speaker B: Over in the. At the house in Mid City there.
• 54:25
  Speaker C: Yeah.
• 54:25
Speaker D: I don't know how you say that. Bruxels. Bruxels.
• 54:28
Speaker B: I don't know how to say that name.
• 54:30
Speaker D: It's got an X in it. Over. So over by Pampy's. Tight Squeeze, actually.
• 54:34
  Speaker B: Sure, yeah, yeah.
• 54:35
Speaker D: Right up the street from Pampy's.
• 54:37
  Speaker B: It certainly has.
• 54:38
Speaker D: And actually, no. The Showcase Lounge or. No. Is it Pampy's?
• 54:41
  Speaker B: I think Pampy's.
• 54:42
  Speaker D: It's.
• 54:42
Speaker B: Pampy's is right over there.
• 54:44
Speaker D: So, yeah, to be sort of designated the shepherd of this Carlo record, like, I wouldn't call it producing. Like Jacques and I basically got it over the goal line. But just to think how mortified Carlo would be that I got to finish
• 55:05
Speaker B: it off and make all the final decisions.
• 55:07
Speaker D: Well, no, I mean, just like that. Like, yeah. Not got to, but like I was entrusted. Like I was at the wheel, you know, and I could just see him like, Ah, McMurture. If he ever. If he ever like, came back from the dead and looked at this record and Listened to it. He would never stop throwing up.
• 55:26
  Speaker C: You never know.
• 55:27
  Speaker B: I don't know.
• 55:27
  Speaker D: Maybe he would.
• 55:27
Speaker B: The record sounds terrific, man.
• 55:29
Speaker D: I think it sounds great.
• 55:30
Speaker B: Yeah, yeah, yeah. But, but I. I know what you mean.
• 55:32
Speaker C: Like, speaking of throwing up, you know, just yesterday I heard this. Yesterday, some guy in Japan got the world's Guinness Book of World record for the longest vomit. Projectile vomit.
• 55:46
  Speaker D: Like distance.
• 55:47
Speaker C: Yeah. 27ft. Wow. Can you imagine throwing 20. Throwing up 27ft?
• 55:54
  Speaker A: No.
• 55:54
Speaker D: Can you imagine training for that?
• 55:56
  Speaker C: Well, yeah.
• 55:56
  Speaker B: I mean, okay, I don't think he
• 55:58
Speaker C: did those food contests or anything like
• 56:00
Speaker D: that, but, like, you must, like, he
• 56:02
Speaker C: drank and stuck his finger down his throat a lot.
• 56:04
Speaker D: So he's like, jeez.
• 56:06
Speaker C: Yeah, his name was like Sunyang Son or something in Japan. And 27ft now is the world record.
• 56:14
Speaker B: It's all done. Die.
• 56:15
Speaker C: He beat it by two inches.
• 56:16
  Speaker B: Wow.
• 56:17
  Speaker D: Two inches.
• 56:18
Speaker C: Yeah. Two inch. Look it up, nation. You can check it out.
• 56:21
  Speaker B: Wow. Crazy.
• 56:22
Speaker C: Yeah, I've thrown up before, but that's like Linda Blair, exorcist, throw up kind
• 56:27
Speaker B: of, you know, another level. Yeah, there's levels to this game.
• 56:31
Speaker D: Vomiting for. For distance.
• 56:33
  Speaker B: Sure.
• 56:34
Speaker C: 27ft. That's how many yards you think.
• 56:37
Speaker D: So, I mean, I guess there's like. There's volume guys. Guys. And frequency guys.
• 56:43
  Speaker C: Yeah.
• 56:44
  Speaker D: All different specialists.
• 56:45
Speaker B: But. But Carla wouldn't be throwing up that hard. But, but, but if he heard the right. No, if he heard.
• 56:51
Speaker C: Until he heard the record. Maybe.
• 56:53
Speaker B: Heard the record. Well, you know, I often think about many of our departed friends, what. What goes on in their name. You know, Alex Shelton is one. You know, what people do after they're gone. And I often think much of it they would not approve of.
• 57:06
  Speaker D: Oh, yeah.
• 57:07
  Speaker A: Well.
• 57:07
Speaker B: But it's too late, as Manny says. Well, now we get to talk about him, so. Or now we get to do what, you know.
• 57:13
  Speaker D: Yeah.
• 57:14
Speaker B: I mean, I always, in any of those situations, I try to think, well, even though he might not want me doing this, would he want someone else doing it instead of me, if it's going to be done anyway. And I always think, well, if it has to be done, he would want me. Me doing it rather than someone else.
• 57:33
Speaker D: Well, when Carlo did finally, you know, go and, you know, the whole world was able to tell their Carlo stories, you know, that was a glorious thing.
• 57:46
Speaker B: Well, but we haven't really. Because, Because. And. And I thought perhaps this might be the occasion. But. But I. I don't. I think the. The window is closed on that.
• 57:55
  Speaker C: And.
• 57:55
Speaker B: And because the. When we had the. The. The Memorial Gig at Tipitina. Everyone was telling stories.
• 58:01
  Speaker D: That's what I mean. That's. That's the moment I'm talking about.
• 58:03
Speaker B: Right, right. But then Pat. Pat saw that you were talking about Patrick.
• 58:08
  Speaker D: Pat. Ryan.
• 58:09
Speaker B: Ryan. Yeah, yeah, yeah. At. At the end of that night, we're in the parking lot, I'm packing up my car. He goes, hey, Renee, who are they talking about in there?
• 58:20
  Speaker C: What?
• 58:21
Speaker B: And he. He goes. He goes, I don't recognize that guy.
• 58:25
Speaker D: Okay, yeah, well, yeah,
• 58:30
  Speaker A: yeah, yeah.
• 58:31
Speaker C: There's all the great stories. That was a tribute. But then there's all the airing of grievances stories. Like, I had the real stories. I remember you brought it up. Maybe there might be a day where everyone can do that.
• 58:42
  Speaker B: Right.
• 58:42
Speaker C: It hasn't come yet.
• 58:43
Speaker B: Right, right. Maybe the window is closed.
• 58:46
Speaker D: Well, I mean, unlike many of us, Carlos did actually turn the Death Star around and, you know, started on a new orbit.
• 58:55
  Speaker C: Right.
• 58:55
Speaker B: Which is why I wouldn't feel bad about telling the. The really horrible story, because he would. He would like it. But then.
• 59:02
Speaker D: But other people told those stories himself.
• 59:04
Speaker B: But other people that are still here
• 59:06
Speaker D: think it's in bad taste, so I. Oh, no, that's. Well, that's ridiculous.
• 59:09
Speaker B: Well, I mean, maybe just for public consumption, we do it privately.
• 59:14
  Speaker D: Perhaps. Perhaps.
• 59:15
Speaker B: But. But so. So you did finish this record and.
• 59:18
Speaker D: And in fact, is this public?
• 59:20
  Speaker B: Well, semi.
• 59:21
  Speaker D: Okay.
• 59:21
  Speaker B: Yeah.
• 59:21
  Speaker C: Yeah.
• 59:21
  Speaker B: I mean, it's available, but, you know, it's. It's a. A needle in a needle stick.
• 59:26
Speaker D: I wish I'd known. I. I might have chosen my words more carefully.
• 59:30
Speaker B: It's too late now. Well, you have a sticker. Two. Two stickers. Well, so. So you did finish this off. This record off. Beautifully well done, Alex. I commend you on your stewardship of it. And then you guys did. Did a public gig. Had you had a record release for this thing. I was out of town for it. I couldn't go. I'm not on the record.
• 59:54
Speaker D: Anyway, so at the broadside, it was very nice. It was like an early kind of thing. And we. We learned some of the songs, we played some of the songs we had, you know, some people come by. There were some people. I mean, I guess the drift was his wife there. Yes, of course.
• 1:00:08
Speaker C: She was there wanting the check. Right? She was there waiting for the check.
• 1:00:11
Speaker B: She's so lovely, you know? Now that was one of the most surprising things in the last few years of Carlo's life is. First of all, I remember the Iguanas were playing at dba, and suddenly Carlo's There, and there's a whole bunch of people. And I'm going, oh, what's Carlo doing here? And here's all these people. And he goes, I got married. And I go, you did what? I was so shocked that he got married. And then I met her, and I was even more shocked because she's such a lovely girl. I thought, jeez, man, how did you hypnotize?
• 1:00:45
Speaker C: How'd you sucker this one? I mean, you suckered so many other
• 1:00:48
Speaker D: people into this situation that you are.
• 1:00:52
Speaker B: But, you know, it was a great turn for him. I mean, it was. She.
• 1:00:58
  Speaker C: She.
• 1:00:59
Speaker B: She meant the world to him. And I know she felt the same way about him, but he. He really did, you know, turn the corner in many ways. You know, that was the final.
• 1:01:11
Speaker D: Oh, yeah. It was the final piece of the puzzle for him.
• 1:01:14
  Speaker A: Right.
• 1:01:14
Speaker D: Yes. And I also think that's why he abandoned the record.
• 1:01:18
  Speaker B: Huh. Interesting.
• 1:01:19
Speaker D: Because all the. The whole record was bullshit, because it was about these. I can sort of. I know. I sort of have theories about who some of these songs are about, and none of them are about Carmen, you know? So, like, it was like his old life. And so he just wanted. He just didn't have any interest in it anymore. And to, like, have to go out and, like, sing those songs that were not what he was feeling know, was. That's. This just my. My theory.
• 1:01:50
  Speaker B: Sure, sure.
• 1:01:51
Speaker C: All right. Enough about him. He's dead. All right.
• 1:01:54
  Speaker B: Okay.
• 1:01:55
Speaker C: What's on the horizon for you? Any more kids? You having more babies with Lily?
• 1:02:03
Speaker D: No, not as far as I know.
• 1:02:06
  Speaker C: Okay.
• 1:02:06
Speaker D: Not as far as I know.
• 1:02:07
Speaker C: And what is she doing nowadays? She's just domesticated mother.
• 1:02:11
Speaker D: She's. She's. You know, she's. She. She's working out at Mishu, you know, building rockets.
• 1:02:17
  Speaker C: Really? Always?
• 1:02:17
  Speaker D: Yes.
• 1:02:18
Speaker C: Oh, my gosh. So that's a little bit of a.
• 1:02:21
Speaker D: She's in the program.
• 1:02:22
Speaker C: Space program. Now, what is a kid doing the summer during the summer? Because there's camps. Is he in camp or is he just home?
• 1:02:28
  Speaker D: Indonesian Navy.
• 1:02:29
Speaker C: Indonesia Navy. No, I thought it was a Colombian Navy.
• 1:02:32
  Speaker D: Colombian Navy.
• 1:02:33
  Speaker B: Either one.
• 1:02:33
  Speaker C: Either one.
• 1:02:34
Speaker D: You know, he's doing. He's doing an intern. Summer internship with the. With the. The Cajun Navy.
• 1:02:41
  Speaker C: Oh, really?
• 1:02:42
  Speaker D: Maybe to see.
• 1:02:42
Speaker C: Good luck with that. Okay. Yeah.
• 1:02:45
Speaker B: Start small, you know.
• 1:02:46
Speaker D: You know, it's local.
• 1:02:47
Speaker B: Start with flat boats.
• 1:02:49
Speaker D: We got some. You know, we got a. We got a scholarship.
• 1:02:52
Speaker B: All right. And internship, so he's gonna do that. Nice.
• 1:02:56
  Speaker D: Nice. Yeah.
• 1:02:58
Speaker B: Well, so. But one of the bands that you've played with For a long period of time. And I know you said it's one of your favorite bands. Bands is the Happy Talk Band.
• 1:03:06
Speaker D: Happy Talk Band. Yes.
• 1:03:07
Speaker B: Because you just get to play guitar and sing some background vocals. You don't have to. Yes, I heard. I was surprised that my wife attended the what. What they build as the final gig.
• 1:03:23
Speaker C: Yeah. Luke told me that it was done, and I said, good.
• 1:03:28
Speaker B: That was one of the few bands I would leave my house to go see.
• 1:03:32
Speaker D: I know, I know, I know. This is. We. We hope that you.
• 1:03:37
Speaker C: You know, it was one of the few bands I would leave my house to go see with a gun, you know.
• 1:03:44
Speaker D: You know, this is. This is. Yeah. Luke, I guess, you know, he's just. He's been doing this band for, I mean, 25 years or something.
• 1:03:55
Speaker B: There's seasons for everything. You know, people know when it's time for them and, you know, maybe it'll change.
• 1:04:01
Speaker C: He's. You know, he said the drummer left town. And that was drummer, drummer left town.
• 1:04:06
Speaker D: Which I think was just kind of like. Jeff Massey was like, it. You know, here's. It's. It's. Here's an opportunity to take a break. So he's taking a break.
• 1:04:15
Speaker C: He had a good run. It's over.
• 1:04:17
  Speaker D: Yeah.
• 1:04:17
Speaker C: You know, just start something else.
• 1:04:19
Speaker D: Well, he's, you know, his son is a piano player.
• 1:04:21
Speaker C: Yeah, I know. You play with his son. All right.
• 1:04:24
Speaker D: And so we're playing.
• 1:04:27
Speaker C: The three of us.
• 1:04:27
Speaker D: We're playing it next weekend. So.
• 1:04:31
Speaker C: Yeah, he's an obnoxious kid. He came over once for Thanksgiving. He was. He was just running around.
• 1:04:37
  Speaker D: Yeah.
• 1:04:37
Speaker C: Yeah. He seemed all right. I gave him a pogo stick to play with. He just looked confused.
• 1:04:41
Speaker D: Yeah. You know, it's these kids today.
• 1:04:43
Speaker B: Almost years ago. Yeah.
• 1:04:45
  Speaker C: Yeah.
• 1:04:45
Speaker B: Pogo sticks. Were you ever good with a pogo stick stick, Alex?
• 1:04:49
  Speaker C: I was.
• 1:04:50
  Speaker D: I remember.
• 1:04:50
Speaker C: It was amazing with a post.
• 1:04:52
Speaker D: I remember when I just. Neighbor had a pogo stick. I was like, oh, my God. I was like. I was obsessed with it.
• 1:04:59
Speaker B: You could do it.
• 1:05:00
  Speaker C: Yeah, man.
• 1:05:02
Speaker B: I was no good.
• 1:05:04
Speaker D: You know, it took me all day to learn.
• 1:05:06
  Speaker A: Yeah.
• 1:05:06
Speaker D: But I was gonna be. I'll be damned if I don't learn
• 1:05:09
Speaker C: how to do this, man. It just. It led into other things. Like, okay, you could do a pogo stick then. You can. Forever, man. You know, you can. Chicks, man. Forever on that pogo stick.
• 1:05:22
Speaker D: That's why people can't anymore. Yeah.
• 1:05:25
Speaker C: Because they don't know the pogo stick.
• 1:05:27
Speaker D: Yeah, they don't. They're not trained on the pogo stick.
• 1:05:29
Speaker C: They go too fast. They don't do. Yeah, exactly.
• 1:05:32
  Speaker B: It's a timing issue.
• 1:05:33
  Speaker D: Yeah, yeah.
• 1:05:34
Speaker B: It's timing and feel.
• 1:05:35
Speaker D: Timing and feel and steadiness.
• 1:05:38
  Speaker C: Right.
• 1:05:38
  Speaker D: Rhythm.
• 1:05:39
  Speaker B: Rhythm.
• 1:05:42
Speaker C: Aim is the biggest balance. Yes.
• 1:05:46
Speaker B: Yeah, yeah, yeah. Okay.
• 1:05:48
Speaker C: We should bring the pogo stick. Next time you do a gig, come out on a pogo stick.
• 1:05:54
  Speaker D: Okay.
• 1:05:54
Speaker C: I'll give you 20 bucks if you do that.
• 1:05:56
Speaker B: Okay. I might double your pay
• 1:06:02
Speaker D: for $20. They knows that.
• 1:06:04
  Speaker B: Speaking of.
• 1:06:05
Speaker C: More than anyone speaking, it is. It is Pride month.
• 1:06:08
Speaker B: So, speaking of which, I meant to refer to you by your. Your. One of your alter Ego names. Mr. Tuesday.
• 1:06:17
  Speaker D: Mr. Tuesday night.
• 1:06:18
  Speaker B: Mr. Tuesday night.
• 1:06:19
  Speaker D: Yes.
• 1:06:20
Speaker B: And this started. What did it start? During the pandemic.
• 1:06:23
Speaker D: Started when I was playing at Yuki's.
• 1:06:25
  Speaker B: Oh, okay.
• 1:06:26
Speaker D: If you remember, Yuki's in the back room at Cafe Brazil, you know?
• 1:06:31
  Speaker B: Yes, I do.
• 1:06:31
  Speaker A: Yeah.
• 1:06:32
Speaker D: There's a Yuki sushi place or something. Well, it was Japanese. It's a kaya food, which is like Japanese, kind of like bar food.
• 1:06:41
  Speaker B: Okay.
• 1:06:42
Speaker D: And Yuki and Aaron are friends of ours. They now have a restaurant called N7.
• 1:06:48
  Speaker B: Oh, yeah.
• 1:06:50
Speaker D: But, you know, Aaron used to work at Noka. Courtney worked at Yuki's, actually, and. But I played there on Tuesday nights, and it was me and an acoustic guitar versus a brass band. And so, like, it's hard to. I don't know if you guys are any. If you guys are in show business, but it's hard to compete. It's hard to. You can't out. You can't out draw a brass band.
• 1:07:17
Speaker B: Sure. It's a lot of noise, a lot of racket.
• 1:07:19
Speaker D: So, like, you know, I would be up there, like, just kind of killing time so I didn't have to scream my head off. I would, like, do shtick about, you know, Mr. Tuesday Night.
• 1:07:29
  Speaker C: Okay.
• 1:07:30
Speaker D: No, just about me. Like, my pathetic. You know, like, I'd be a pathetic nightclub guy.
• 1:07:35
  Speaker B: Right.
• 1:07:36
Speaker D: You know, in Yuki's, every Tuesday, it's, hey, Mr. Tuesday Night. I just, like. Just something that just drone on and on and the people would sort of look at their food and, you know, and I felt like I'd. This is like this. Like, yeah, I could do this.
• 1:07:51
  Speaker A: Yeah.
• 1:07:53
Speaker B: You know, I could commit to this bit.
• 1:07:55
Speaker D: This is. This is my. You know, like, I. I can't be heard. No one even wants to hear the jokes. Nobody's even looking my way.
• 1:08:05
Speaker B: I'm home, you know.
• 1:08:07
  Speaker C: Nice.
• 1:08:08
Speaker B: And. And you carried that forward through the. The pandemic. You did a series of like 100 weeks in a row or something remotely as we were doing these, we did a hundred of these. These podcasts remotely.
• 1:08:22
Speaker D: I did. I did the Mr. Tuesday night. Not every Tuesday. Like, we did 105 straight. But then we did it up and through 2023 when I started at Bufus.
• 1:08:37
  Speaker B: Okay.
• 1:08:37
Speaker D: I played there on Tuesdays.
• 1:08:38
Speaker B: And you all. You still do the remote broadcast from.
• 1:08:42
Speaker D: I still set up my phone.
• 1:08:43
  Speaker A: Yeah.
• 1:08:44
  Speaker B: Right.
• 1:08:44
Speaker D: There's a guy down in Guadalajara, Bolivia
• 1:08:49
Speaker B: or something who watches Tierra del Fuego.
• 1:08:51
Speaker D: No, he's down in South America.
• 1:08:53
Speaker B: Well, there's also a lady. Okay, South America.
• 1:08:56
Speaker D: All right. All right.
• 1:08:57
Speaker B: Well, it's Argentina. Sorry.
• 1:08:58
  Speaker D: Okay.
• 1:08:58
  Speaker B: Bolivia.
• 1:08:59
  Speaker D: Yeah.
• 1:08:59
  Speaker B: I. I don't know.
• 1:09:00
  Speaker D: I.
• 1:09:00
  Speaker B: It's.
• 1:09:01
  Speaker D: I sounded like a restaurant.
• 1:09:02
Speaker C: We're number one in Slovenia, you know.
• 1:09:04
  Speaker B: Yeah, no, Serbia.
• 1:09:06
  Speaker C: Serbia.
• 1:09:07
  Speaker D: Okay.
• 1:09:07
Speaker B: Yeah. Number one music podcast.
• 1:09:10
  Speaker D: Great.
• 1:09:10
Speaker C: They're listening to the Trump phones.
• 1:09:13
  Speaker D: Okay.
• 1:09:14
Speaker C: Yeah, that's how big it is.
• 1:09:16
Speaker D: Yeah, I know. I know all about that. Like, you know, when you. I got a song that's on a. In a movie that is big in Slovenia.
• 1:09:25
  Speaker C: Really?
• 1:09:25
Speaker D: You know the movie Super Troopers?
• 1:09:27
  Speaker B: Yeah, yeah, yeah.
• 1:09:28
Speaker D: Whenever I get a BMI statement, it's always like, Slovenia, you know, Thrace.
• 1:09:36
  Speaker B: Thrice.
• 1:09:38
Speaker C: How much is the check for Thracian?
• 1:09:40
  Speaker D: 4 bucks 40 cents.
• 1:09:43
Speaker C: Yeah, exactly. I still get those residuals, too. From movies. Yeah, I got one just about a month ago for, like, eight bucks.
• 1:09:51
Speaker D: Oh, I get. I get SAG checks, you know.
• 1:09:54
  Speaker C: Yeah.
• 1:09:54
  Speaker D: From, like, Treme.
• 1:09:55
  Speaker C: Yeah.
• 1:09:56
Speaker D: And they're never more than $2.
• 1:09:59
Speaker C: Well, Treme, man. Treme ripped me off. Totally.
• 1:10:02
  Speaker D: Yeah.
• 1:10:03
Speaker C: Couldn't stand that show. They ripped me out. Episode 4. The Davis Rogan character is stealing my line. He says I'm a desperate man for desperate times. Well, and what's that? Writer Eric. Ellie Lowy, whatever the his name was, he ripped me off because he wrote that episode. It's. You know, he's basically saying I'm a troubled man for troubled times, but they just switched it. Oh, you know, man, the balls.
• 1:10:28
  Speaker B: The source.
• 1:10:29
Speaker D: Where does he get his balls?
• 1:10:30
Speaker B: It's a sore subject, but we're kind of on the downslope of the podcast here, Alex. But I want to say, you know, after talking about, you know, the. The camaraderie that we have.
• 1:10:42
  Speaker A: The. The.
• 1:10:43
Speaker D: The esprit de cor.
• 1:10:45
Speaker B: Yes, that's the. That's it. The esprit de cor. You. You. We. We had to pull you in on kind of last minute to sub for Rod Hodges with the Iguanas.
• 1:10:56
Speaker D: The intrepid Rod Hodges.
• 1:10:57
Speaker B: The Intrepid. Well, I don't know, but you showed up and killed it. Did such a great job, man.
• 1:11:06
  Speaker D: Thank you, Sergeant.
• 1:11:07
Speaker C: You know Rod, is he sick?
• 1:11:09
Speaker B: Oh, no, he just. We don't know. It's. You know, Rod, he's, he wasn't sick. He's a man of mystery. He said, if you can get a sub for the Sunday, go ahead and do it. And we're like, oh, you have something to do. And he said yes. He didn't ever tell us what it was. No one ever did a follow up question because we knew it would be an equally oblique answer to or opaque answer. I don't know, but maybe both.
• 1:11:34
Speaker C: Was he found asleep in his car?
• 1:11:37
Speaker B: I don't know. I don't know how he's, he's. He's. He was texting with me today, so. So I think all. All's well that ends well. But yes, Alex did a wonderful job subbing. It's, it was, it was, it was a terrific gig.
• 1:11:50
Speaker D: So thanks for having me again. It was a pleasure.
• 1:11:52
  Speaker B: It's always.
• 1:11:53
Speaker D: I do it anytime.
• 1:11:54
Speaker B: Right on. Well, yes, you're. You've moved right to the top list.
• 1:11:59
Speaker D: Keep me on that list, man.
• 1:12:02
  Speaker C: All right.
• 1:12:02
  Speaker B: Well, I guess that's about. What's that?
• 1:12:06
Speaker D: No, you have a one hitter.
• 1:12:09
Speaker B: No, no, we don't have a one hitter.
• 1:12:11
Speaker C: I've got a no hitter going right now. Yeah.
• 1:12:13
  Speaker A: Yeah.
• 1:12:16
Speaker D: And he's on answer.
• 1:12:17
  Speaker C: Yeah.
• 1:12:18
Speaker B: All right. What is that guy's name?
• 1:12:21
  Speaker D: Doc Ellis.
• 1:12:22
  Speaker B: Doc Ellis.
• 1:12:22
Speaker C: There you go. Bye Bye.
• 1:12:24
Speaker B: Well, yeah. So, so everybody check out the Carlo Nuccio record. Clap Hands. Fantastic record. I'll put the, the link.

  Speaker C: work and I don't.
• 1:13:01
Speaker B: Well, that's, that's, that's what we're doing here, man. You will live on forever with this work we're doing here. You can call it work.
• 1:13:08
  Speaker C: Who cares?
• 1:13:10
Speaker B: Sure, sure, sure. I get it. Well, Alex, thank you so much for coming on the podcast. It's a pleasure to have you on. On for a second time. And as always, the Troublemen podcast. We like to say trouble never ends, Alex.
• 1:13:24
Speaker C: It struggle continues constantly. Good night.
• 1:13:27
  Speaker B: Good night.
• 1:13:28
Speaker A: You can't do it wrong, but everybody's trying to get it right. It only takes a desire and the effort required to let it breathe. But it will never change you on the inside. Some people get cross with it. Careful not to get lost in it. Others settle for the scrap. As it falls from its razor edge. It sure be lonely for for a while. Then you raise up your cup to all that made it work before you. You clap hands, clap hands. You clap your hands for love. Clap hands for love. Clap hands, clap hands, clap your hands for love. Clap your hands for love. You clap hands, clap hands. You clap hands, clap your hands for love. Clap hands for love. Clap hands, clap hands, clap hands, clap hands, clap hands, Clap your hands for love. Clap hands for love.

Clap your hands for love. Clap hands for love. Clap clap. Clap your hands around.
• 1:18:07
  Speaker C: Sa.
• 1:18:59
  Speaker A: Stars.
