- 0:11Hello friends, it's Sean here. It's Tuesday, it's the 7th of
- 0:16April and it's great to have your company on this Easter
- 0:19Tuesday, which is back to work and school for many of us.
- 0:22Some people still get a day off and others of you are like, this
- 0:26is the life of retirement. What do you mean day on and day
- 0:29off? Wherever you are, no matter what
- 0:31you're up to today, great to have your company.
- 0:33As we are going to be unwrapping A sparkly new book of the Bible
- 0:38today. We are going to be reading the
- 0:40book of Joshua together. Now, if there was any
- 0:44consistency in the naming of the books of the Old Testament,
- 0:48Exodus, Leviticus, Numbers, and Deuteronomy would have been
- 0:50called Moses, Moses, Moses and Moses.
- 0:54And now we're into Joshua. No, it's not called Moses.
- 0:57And this is called Joshua because frankly, they couldn't
- 0:59call it God. Because while this is certainly
- 1:03the story of Joshua leading the people of Israel into the
- 1:06Promised Land, this really is the story of God being faithful
- 1:11and keeping all of his covenantal promises, all of the
- 1:15promises that he made to his people about inheriting the
- 1:18land, about settling in the land, about finding peace with
- 1:22all of their neighbours. All of those things come true in
- 1:26the book of Joshua. And this is a glorious, glorious
- 1:30laying out of God's faithfulness to his people.
- 1:35So we are going to spend the next number of weeks reading
- 1:37this together. And it's going to be wonderful
- 1:40to hear this story of Israel finally coming into their
- 1:45inheritance after all those years wandering in the desert.
- 1:48So, Holy Spirit, open up our hearts that we would hear your
- 1:53truth and we would see more of you and your character as we
- 1:58read Joshua together. Alright friends, let us do it.
- 2:03Let's open up and read together Joshua chapter 1.
- 2:16After the death of Moses the Lord's servant, the Lord spoke
- 2:20to Joshua son of Nun, Moses assistant.
- 2:24He said, Moses, my servant is dead.
- 2:27Therefore, the time has come for you to lead these people,
- 2:31they're Israelites, across the Jordan River into the land I'm
- 2:35giving them. I promise you what I promised
- 2:38Moses. Wherever you set foot, you will
- 2:41be on land I have given you, from the Negev Wilderness in the
- 2:45South to the Lebanon Mountains in the north, from the Euphrates
- 2:49River in the east to the Mediterranean Sea in the West,
- 2:52including all the land of the Hittites.
- 2:55No one will be able to stand against you as long as you live,
- 2:59for I will be with you as I was with Moses.
- 3:03I will not fail you or abandon you.
- 3:06Be strong and courageous, for you are the one who will lead
- 3:10these people to possess all the land I swore to their ancestors
- 3:14I would give them. Be strong and very courageous.
- 3:18Be careful to obey all the instructions Moses gave you.
- 3:22Do not deviate from them, turning either to the right or
- 3:25to the left. Then you'll be successful in
- 3:28everything you do. Study this book of instruction
- 3:32continually. Meditate on it day and night so
- 3:36you will be sure to obey everything written in it.
- 3:39Only then will you prosper and succeed in all you do.
- 3:43This is my command. Be strong and courageous.
- 3:48Do not be afraid or discouraged, for the Lord your God is with
- 3:51you wherever you go. Joshua then commanded the
- 3:56officers of Israel Go through the camp and tell the people to
- 4:00get their provisions ready. In three days you will cross the
- 4:03Jordan River and take possession of the land the Lord your God is
- 4:08giving you. Then Joshua called together the
- 4:11tribes of Reuben, Gad, and the half tribe of Manasseh.
- 4:15He told them, Remember what Moses, the servant of the Lord,
- 4:19commanded you. The Lord your God is giving you
- 4:23a place of rest. He has given you this land.
- 4:27Your wives, children, and livestock may remain here in the
- 4:30land Moses assigned to you on the east side of the Jordan
- 4:34River, but your strong warriors, fully armed, must lead the other
- 4:39tribes across the Jordan to help them conquer their territory.
- 4:43Stay with them until the Lord gives them rest as He has given
- 4:46you rest, and until they too possess the land the Lord your
- 4:50God is giving them. Only then may you return and
- 4:54settle here on the east side of the Jordan River, in the land
- 4:57that Moses, the servant of the Lord, assigned to you.
- 5:02They answered Joshua, we will do whatever you command us, and we
- 5:06will go wherever you send us. We will obey you just as we
- 5:10obeyed Moses, and may the Lord your God be with you as he was
- 5:15with Moses. Anyone who rebels against your
- 5:18orders and does not obey your words, and everything you
- 5:21command will be put to death. So be strong and courageous.
- 5:36Oh Jesus, as we read this incredible reading, we hear this
- 5:40refrain repeated again and again.
- 5:43Be strong and courageous, our Lord have.
- 5:47We can sure use that advice. How much of our life do we spend
- 5:52uncertain and tentative, testing out your promises, hesitantly
- 5:58leaning into our faith in You? Our Lord, I pray that this would
- 6:03be an instruction to us and would seep in that we are to be
- 6:07strong and courageous, that we are to be bold and step forward,
- 6:13knowing that you go with us. Our Father, I pray that you
- 6:19transform our hearts so that our hearts beat for the same
- 6:24priorities and things that your heart beats for, so that when we
- 6:28step forward, we do that in your will with our sure confidence
- 6:34that you go with us. You are wonderful and you have
- 6:38given us so much, not just land, not just provisioned, but your
- 6:42Son Jesus, for whom we thank you and praise you.
- 6:47And we pray all of this in his wonderful name.
- 6:50Amen.
