- 0:11Hello friends, it's Sean here. It's Thursday, it's the 26th of
- 0:15September and you have tapped on play.
- 0:19You have come back for more after yesterday's lists that
- 0:22seemingly went on forever. Our friends, I hope as you heard
- 0:27those lists that you just reflected on the way that God is
- 0:31faithful to you in your life. And now that we have made it
- 0:35through that, the list of people who have returned, now we get to
- 0:39hear about the business of rebuilding God's home,
- 0:43rebuilding that temple that they have come to do.
- 0:46And I love how yesterday in that reading, they separated the
- 0:50singers from everyone else. Yes, the singers.
- 0:53God really does love His people singing to Him.
- 0:56And today there will be more singing, actual singing, not
- 0:59just the names of the singers. So let U.S.
- 1:02Open our hearts with a song to sing to our God as we read
- 1:06together. Ezra chapter 3.
- 1:18In early autumn, when the Israelites had settled in their
- 1:21towns, all the people assembled in Jerusalem with a unified
- 1:25purpose. Then Joshua son of Jehovah Dak,
- 1:30joined his fellow priests, and Zerubbabel, son of Shihaltiel,
- 1:34with his family in rebuilding the altar of the God of Israel.
- 1:39They wanted to sacrifice burnt offerings on it as instructed in
- 1:42the law of Moses, the man of God.
- 1:45Even though the people were afraid of the local residents,
- 1:48they rebuilt the altar at its old site.
- 1:52Then they began to sacrifice burnt offerings on the altar to
- 1:56the Lord. Each morning and evening.
- 1:58They celebrated the festival of shelters as prescribed in the
- 2:02law, sacrificing the number of burnt offerings specified for
- 2:06each day of the festival. They also offered the regular
- 2:09burnt offerings and the offerings required for the new
- 2:12moon celebrations and the annual festivals as prescribed by the
- 2:16Lord. The people also gave voluntary
- 2:19offerings to the Lord. 15 days before the festival of shelters
- 2:23began, the priests had begun to sacrifice burnt offerings to the
- 2:27Lord. This was even before they had
- 2:30started to lay the foundation of the Lord's temple.
- 2:33Then the people hired Masons and carpenters and bought cedar logs
- 2:38from the people of Tyre and Saidon, paying them with food,
- 2:42wine and olive oil. The logs were brought down from
- 2:45the Lebanon Mountains and floated along the coast of the
- 2:48Mediterranean Sea to Joppa, for King Cyrus had given permission
- 2:53for this. The construction of the Temple
- 2:56of God began in mid spring, during the second year after
- 3:00they arrived in Jerusalem. The workforce was made up of
- 3:03everyone who had returned from exile, including Zerubbabel, son
- 3:08of Shi'eltiel, Jeshua, son of Jehozadak, and his fellow
- 3:12priests, and all the Levites. The Levites, who were 20 years
- 3:17old or older, were put in charge of rebuilding the Lord's Temple.
- 3:21The workers at the Temple of God were supervised by Jeshua with
- 3:25his sons and relatives, and Cadmiel and his sons, all
- 3:29descendants of Hodovia. They were helped in this task by
- 3:33the Levites and the family of Hennodad.
- 3:36When the builders completed the foundation of the Lord's temple,
- 3:39the priests put on their robes and took their places to blow
- 3:43their trumpets. And the Levites, descendants of
- 3:47Asaph, clashed their cymbals to praise the Lord, just as King
- 3:51David had prescribed. With praise and thanks they sang
- 3:55this song to the Lord. He is so good.
- 3:59His faithful love for Israel endures forever.
- 4:04Then all the people gave a great shout, praising the Lord because
- 4:07the foundation of the Lord's temple had been laid.
- 4:11But many of the older priests, Levites and other leaders who
- 4:15had seen the first temple wept aloud when they saw the new
- 4:19temple's foundation. The others, however, were
- 4:22shouting for joy. The joyful shouting and weeping
- 4:26mingled together in a loud noise that could be heard far in the
- 4:30distance. Our Lord won a poignant moment,
- 4:43this outpouring of joy at what you were doing at that time, but
- 4:49also the broken hearts of those who had seen what had been there
- 4:52before. Our Lord, our lives are not
- 4:56dissimilar where you move in new directions and draw us into new
- 5:02adventures and new ways of serving you.
- 5:06And part of us longs for things to be the way they were.
- 5:11But Lord, you are a God who looks forward.
- 5:14Looks forward not just to the next steps here, but looks
- 5:17forward with the longest viewpoint, far longer than we
- 5:20could ever imagine. So Lord, I pray that you would
- 5:25grow our hearts so that they can trust in You and Your long range
- 5:31wisdom which stretches far beyond our near sightedness.
- 5:36Thank you for all the love that you have for us and that the
- 5:40plans You have for us are good and always to draw US ever back
- 5:47into Your embrace. Ah, our loving God, thank you
- 5:51that you desire relationship with us.
- 5:55Boy, that makes very little sense to our human brains, but
- 5:58we'll take it, and we love you and we're grateful.
- 6:02And we pray all of this in the saving name of Jesus, Amen.
