- 0:48Speaker 1: and a half years strong. Got a great show coming
- 0:50Speaker 1: your way this week. I'm Jeff Warren here with my
- 0:52Speaker 1: buddy Eric Leonard better known as Edgecombe Stan. We got
- 0:57Speaker 1: the Thanksgiving a tradition in our midst here as we're
- 1:02Speaker 1: recording this Wednesday night. I love Thanksgiving, buddy, It is
- 1:05Speaker 1: my like, it's my favorite holiday of the year. Food, family, football,
- 1:10Speaker 1: I'd love it absolutely do.
- 1:12Speaker 2: Man, it's not even close. It's the best holiday of
- 1:15Speaker 2: the year. Christmas is a panass. I'm just gonna say it, Like, i.
- 1:20Speaker 1: Gotta tell you, I hate wrapping presents anymore. I'm just
- 1:23Speaker 1: like getting I'm getting to the point where I'm getting
- 1:25Speaker 1: like old, where I'm like I have to I don't
- 1:27Speaker 1: want to get down on the ground to wrap presence.
- 1:30Speaker 1: I need to be like on my counter, like the
- 1:32Speaker 1: kitchen counter wrapping presents.
- 1:35Speaker 3: Be a work bench in your garage, yes, to wrap gifts. Yeah,
- 1:39Speaker 3: the nice thing. We don't really do a ton of presents.
- 1:41Speaker 2: So it's my kids are older too, so it's like, yeah, yeah,
- 1:45Speaker 2: here's your bike, nothing on it.
- 1:48Speaker 3: Here's your fucking bike. You already know what you're getting anyways,
- 1:50Speaker 3: So there's like.
- 1:52Speaker 1: A blanket on it or something like that. They take
- 1:54Speaker 1: the blanket off now.
- 1:55Speaker 2: No, we wrap our dogs gifts. That's pretty much yet. Yeah,
- 2:02Speaker 2: because it's fun to try and watch him try and
- 2:03Speaker 2: open it. No, Thanksgiving is the best one. It just
- 2:07Speaker 2: by far because he had the day off afterwards. We
- 2:10Speaker 2: have another game Friday.
- 2:12Speaker 1: Eagles, Yes, Eagles. I'm not too happy about it, to
- 2:15Speaker 1: be honest with you, I mean neither am. I I'm like, NFL,
- 2:19Speaker 1: what are you doing? What are you doing?
- 2:20Speaker 2: Like?
- 2:20Speaker 1: We got my wife and I we've got some stuff
- 2:23Speaker 1: Friday night that we need to go to, and I'm
- 2:26Speaker 1: gonna do the post game. I don't know if Len's
- 2:28Speaker 1: gonna be jumping on. It could be our buddy Josh
- 2:30Speaker 1: Schuster as well. It ain't gonna be me. We got
- 2:34Speaker 1: that right. Eric's been picking up the slack here freaking Len.
- 2:39Speaker 1: I'm telling you right now, Siri, I'm like, do you
- 2:41Speaker 1: think you could do the post game show? And He's like, well,
- 2:43Speaker 1: I'm gonna be at my parents for Thanksgiving. We're not
- 2:46Speaker 1: gonna be getting back on Friday. Not sure when It's like, dude,
- 2:49Speaker 1: can you just tell me yes or no? Like do
- 2:52Speaker 1: you know your schedule at all?
- 2:55Speaker 3: Yeah? And whatever Slacky drops I pick up.
- 2:58Speaker 2: So I have a I have a death hatred for
- 3:02Speaker 2: him right now.
- 3:05Speaker 1: But this is gonna be a fun show. There's gonna
- 3:07Speaker 1: be a fun one here.
- 3:07Speaker 2: We gotta text me money that de Len's not doing
- 3:09Speaker 2: the show, and I knew why because where he talked
- 3:11Speaker 2: he's going to he's gallivanting around Norristown and King of Prussia.
- 3:14Speaker 3: Yes, And I was like, you sign a bitch. I
- 3:18Speaker 3: gotta like crep some food.
- 3:19Speaker 2: I gotta do the show, which is but we have
- 3:21Speaker 2: a really nice, easy show.
- 3:23Speaker 3: Yes, it's gonna be fun, Yes, it absolutely is.
- 3:26Speaker 1: And to get into that great segue, we are gonna
- 3:28Speaker 1: be giving our top three lists, a new top three
- 3:31Speaker 1: list of things in Philly sports that we are thankful for.
- 3:34Speaker 1: Then we're gonna be diving into some general sixers talk
- 3:37Speaker 1: about where this team is at right now. Then I
- 3:39Speaker 1: got our buddy, Josh Schuster. He's gonna be coming on
- 3:41Speaker 1: from Philadelphia Soccer Now dot Com. We're gonna be dissecting
- 3:45Speaker 1: the Philadelphia Union's playoff loss to uh New York City
- 3:49Speaker 1: FC this past weekend, which ended a pretty remarkable season
- 3:53Speaker 1: for that team. Then we're gonna dive into some Eagles
- 3:56Speaker 1: talk with our good friend Lou Dibiassi from the Lockdown
- 3:58Speaker 1: Eagles podcast. So we're gonna be down on the table
- 4:00Speaker 1: this week. So buddy, why don't we just get into
- 4:03Speaker 1: our top three list here? I love when you and
- 4:05Speaker 1: I do our list. They're a lot of fun. And yes,
- 4:09Speaker 1: this one's hoky because it's Thanksgiving time. Here the top
- 4:13Speaker 1: three things in Philly sports that we are thankful for.
- 4:16Speaker 1: Why don't we start with our number threes here. I'll
- 4:18Speaker 1: let you go first.
- 4:20Speaker 2: Okay, my number three is kind of a personal one,
- 4:24Speaker 2: but it does time in the Philly sports in the show.
- 4:27Speaker 2: I'm thankful that my son is into the Flyers now.
- 4:29Speaker 2: Oh yes, it's been really fun. It's been a long
- 4:33Speaker 2: time since I've been like really into the Flyers. And
- 4:36Speaker 2: you get to watch tonight because I was prepping food.
- 4:38Speaker 3: But they won four two. Yes, yet they won four two.
- 4:41Speaker 2: We've been watching the games following the stats I showed
- 4:46Speaker 2: you earlier. We got a huge Flyers flag for over
- 4:48Speaker 2: here in the basement, yep, to go along with my
- 4:51Speaker 2: sixer stuff, which is all over the place, and I
- 4:53Speaker 2: was just like, it's kind of cool that my kid
- 4:56Speaker 2: is into this because I was not.
- 4:58Speaker 3: He kind of dragged me in to it.
- 5:00Speaker 2: We talked in the show last week about like only
- 5:03Speaker 2: having so much ram and brain space yes for sports stats,
- 5:07Speaker 2: and it's been really nice, like getting into this team
- 5:11Speaker 2: because they're fun to watch. Actually, yes, I don't know
- 5:15Speaker 2: about previous years, but like, I like this team and
- 5:18Speaker 2: I can kind of see the direction they're heading in.
- 5:20Speaker 2: I can see the vision and kind of reminds me
- 5:23Speaker 2: like the late twenty ten teams, like twenty twelve, Like
- 5:28Speaker 2: they're not quite there, but like I can see it.
- 5:30Speaker 2: I can like they're really aggressive, they fight, they have
- 5:34Speaker 2: a good goalie. Finally, yeah, I had to text you
- 5:37Speaker 2: when they traded for him and ask like was this
- 5:40Speaker 2: a good trade?
- 5:40Speaker 3: And you were like yes. I'm like okay, good, Yes, Yeah.
- 5:46Speaker 2: I'm really thankful that my son is into him, because,
- 5:48Speaker 2: like now I kind of have some in case the
- 5:50Speaker 2: Sixers falter here, I have something going into the springtime
- 5:55Speaker 2: before the start totally because I'm our next topic.
- 5:59Speaker 3: We will talk about it. But I'm starting to feel little a.
- 6:02Speaker 1: Little uneasy with the Sixers. Yeah, yeah, I cannot believe
- 6:06Speaker 1: that this is your number three because it segues perfectly
- 6:11Speaker 1: into my number three, which deals with the Philadelphia Flyers,
- 6:14Speaker 1: but specifically from the standpoint where this Flyers organization and
- 6:19Speaker 1: this team is in a very good position during this
- 6:23Speaker 1: rebuild right now. And what I mean by that, and
- 6:25Speaker 1: there's a story that's been ongoing within Flyers Nation that
- 6:31Speaker 1: this team is not necessarily having a season that many expected.
- 6:34Speaker 1: Only some of the most I would say optimistic fans
- 6:37Speaker 1: would have thought that, you know, they would be battling
- 6:40Speaker 1: for a playoff spot as we head into this December
- 6:43Speaker 1: right now, if the playoffs would happen, this Flyers team
- 6:46Speaker 1: would be the number one wild card team. Like not
- 6:50Speaker 1: too many folks expected that. But in a report this
- 6:54Speaker 1: past week during a radio hit on sportsnet the Fan
- 6:58Speaker 1: Hockey Show, Elliott Friedman was kind of just going on
- 7:02Speaker 1: and on about how the new NHL expansion team, the
- 7:06Speaker 1: UHAW Mammoth, they just started playing last year as an
- 7:10Speaker 1: NHL team and organization. They are a team in one
- 7:13Speaker 1: of those organizations that are looking for draft picks in
- 7:16Speaker 1: the future, and they want possibly looking to deal some
- 7:20Speaker 1: NHL ready talent as they try to be more of
- 7:22Speaker 1: a competitive team, and as a conversation kept going along,
- 7:26Speaker 1: it was basically said that the perfect team for them
- 7:29Speaker 1: to work with in the future is the Philadelphia Flyers
- 7:33Speaker 1: because of the draft picks that the Flyers do have.
- 7:36Speaker 1: I mean, it's not a ton of draft picks in
- 7:38Speaker 1: the future, but the Flyers do have assets where they're
- 7:41Speaker 1: in the midst of this rebuild where we're seeing great
- 7:44Speaker 1: things from a lot of good players on the ice
- 7:47Speaker 1: at this point. The defense this year has been a
- 7:49Speaker 1: big surprise as well. But the Flyers are in a
- 7:52Speaker 1: good position right now where dealing some draft picks for
- 7:56Speaker 1: that NHL ready talent and improven talent can actually happen
- 8:02Speaker 1: to take this team, who is a number one wild
- 8:05Speaker 1: card team at this moment, and get them into that
- 8:08Speaker 1: next echelon and that next level of NHL play like.
- 8:13Speaker 1: It's a great position that the Flyers are in, and
- 8:16Speaker 1: that's what I am so thankful for. This is years
- 8:18Speaker 1: and years and years of us waiting for them to
- 8:21Speaker 1: be in this position to really go for it. And
- 8:23Speaker 1: Danny Briere, I gotta tell you that the guy has
- 8:26Speaker 1: made some really, really great decisions. I mean, this just
- 8:30Speaker 1: last summer this past summer when they acquired Trevor Zegras
- 8:34Speaker 1: from the Anaheim Ducks for a second and a fourth
- 8:36Speaker 1: round pick and also Ryan Paling as well. But they
- 8:40Speaker 1: were willing to trade some future draft capital for what
- 8:45Speaker 1: they believed was a proven player and somebody to elevate
- 8:47Speaker 1: the team. And that's what Trevor Zegress has done and
- 8:50Speaker 1: then some this season. So anyway, that is what I'm
- 8:53Speaker 1: grateful for. The Flyers are in a good position during
- 8:55Speaker 1: this rebuild here. That was a perfect segue that you.
- 8:58Speaker 2: Had for You're the segue king, So I'm proud of
- 9:02Speaker 2: I'm mat you. But no, I like the Brier. This
- 9:07Speaker 2: team's at the point where like, how many freaking years
- 9:10Speaker 2: can you like keep rebuilding and trading away players for picks.
- 9:14Speaker 2: Like I think they finally hite that point. It's like
- 9:16Speaker 2: Brier hit Brier recognized him, was like, let's start getting
- 9:19Speaker 2: players in here.
- 9:20Speaker 3: To help us win.
- 9:21Speaker 2: They're twelve seven and one, I believe, and like that's
- 9:24Speaker 2: the smart move. Like I I'm not going to compare
- 9:27Speaker 2: him to Howie, Yeah, but I've read comparisons online where
- 9:31Speaker 2: they're like that we like, like, this guy is very
- 9:34Speaker 2: aggressive he's a smart, smart GM and they finally we're
- 9:39Speaker 2: not We're not just like we have we got a
- 9:41Speaker 2: first round pick in twenty twenty eight. It's like, well,
- 9:45Speaker 2: are you going to start winning eventually? Like you start
- 9:47Speaker 2: to board teams. Listen, I'm a historian of the process.
- 9:53Speaker 2: And it got to a certain point and you're like,
- 9:55Speaker 2: I don't want to keep watching this shit, like this sucks. Yeah,
- 9:58Speaker 2: and you finally got to get some play and they
- 10:00Speaker 2: did that for the Sixers. But I feel like the
- 10:02Speaker 2: Flyers are starting to finally do that and they're just
- 10:05Speaker 2: gonna get better and better. They're still young, but like,
- 10:07Speaker 2: start bringing those start bringing those other players in with
- 10:10Speaker 2: the young guys. You have yea with KATORI gets the
- 10:12Speaker 2: veterans too, and like I do like the direction they're
- 10:15Speaker 2: heading and I I trust Breir.
- 10:18Speaker 3: Which is kind of.
- 10:20Speaker 2: The other thing too, is like I talked to Viny
- 10:22Speaker 2: about this the other day, like it's not it doesn't
- 10:25Speaker 2: feel as incestuous, incetuous, incetuous.
- 10:28Speaker 3: With the Flyers.
- 10:29Speaker 2: Yeah, where it was the same guys like like Bobby
- 10:33Speaker 2: Clark and like the old seventies guys were always like
- 10:36Speaker 2: in charge of the team and it was like, are
- 10:38Speaker 2: we ever going to like go of that that that
- 10:41Speaker 2: part of time for the Flyers, Like, yeah, how many
- 10:44Speaker 2: times can we like see them skating on the ice?
- 10:46Speaker 3: Wait? You won forty years?
- 10:48Speaker 2: It was like we got to move on, guys, And
- 10:51Speaker 2: I feel like this, I feel like the team is
- 10:53Speaker 2: finally starting to do that.
- 10:54Speaker 1: Yeah, I agree to Look, I mean new head coach
- 10:57Speaker 1: Rick Hackett, I mean was you know, a member of
- 10:59Speaker 1: the Philadelphia Festamon organization. But he's been that breath of
- 11:02Speaker 1: fresh air that this team is needed. I mean johns
- 11:06Speaker 1: Bertorella has been. It has been freaking horrible these past
- 11:09Speaker 1: few years in a lot of different ways. Terrible relationship
- 11:12Speaker 1: with the players. And Rick Tacket is a guy who
- 11:15Speaker 1: is a player's type of coach. And I hate that
- 11:18Speaker 1: phrase because it's so clichde, but he he values the
- 11:21Speaker 1: relationship with these guys and he really pushes them too,
- 11:24Speaker 1: but respects them and their talent.
- 11:26Speaker 2: So it's but a players type of coach, and this
- 11:30Speaker 2: particular team works really well. You got the young guys
- 11:33Speaker 2: trying to make trying to find their way, you got
- 11:35Speaker 2: the veterans, and he can kind of talk to both
- 11:38Speaker 2: sides of it, right, the young guys will listen to him,
- 11:40Speaker 2: and the older guys will like kind of respect him.
- 11:42Speaker 2: He's kind of the perfect coach right now. Now they
- 11:45Speaker 2: might have to bring in a hard ass to finally
- 11:47Speaker 2: win a cup. Possibly that that's kind of the nature
- 11:50Speaker 2: of sports and every sport, like with coach Hirings. But
- 11:52Speaker 2: like they got the perfect guy right now and they
- 11:55Speaker 2: have the perfect GM and I, like I said, I
- 11:58Speaker 2: see the vision but the first time in forever. Yeah,
- 12:01Speaker 2: I'm like, Okay, the Flyers sene like to have their
- 12:03Speaker 2: ship together.
- 12:03Speaker 1: Yeah, absolutely, all right, man, what's your number two here?
- 12:07Speaker 1: For things were most thankful for in the world of
- 12:10Speaker 1: Philly sports.
- 12:11Speaker 2: Well, I mean it's the Eagles, honestly, No, not not
- 12:16Speaker 2: just the Eagles.
- 12:16Speaker 3: Sorry, okay, I was gonna say the whole team at
- 12:19Speaker 3: this pointer.
- 12:20Speaker 2: No, not the offense like the first half of the
- 12:24Speaker 2: game this past Sunday. Sure, but no, honestly, it's not
- 12:28Speaker 2: not just the Eagles defense. It's particular players. I've I'm
- 12:33Speaker 2: a huge fan. I started watching the Eagles like religiously
- 12:37Speaker 2: in like eighty five about there. I started going to
- 12:39Speaker 2: games with my dad on bus trips. Yeah, and always
- 12:42Speaker 2: loved the defense because that was the biggest best part.
- 12:45Speaker 2: Like Rydal Cunning, it was great. I love Keith Byers
- 12:48Speaker 2: and Anthony Tony, but like, come on, the defense was like
- 12:49Speaker 2: the whole thing. Always loved great cornerbacks, Eric Allen. I
- 12:54Speaker 2: loved Reggie White, Jerome Brown, Mike Pitts, Clyde Simmons on
- 12:59Speaker 2: the other side. So I'm really very thankful for Quinnon.
- 13:03Speaker 2: Mitchell Nice is probably my favorite Eagle right now. The
- 13:07Speaker 2: guy is such a stud. What a great draft pick.
- 13:10Speaker 1: Yep.
- 13:10Speaker 2: He shuts wide receivers down. I know he had he
- 13:14Speaker 2: gave up one to Pickens or Ceedee Lamb this past weekend,
- 13:17Speaker 2: but just overall, he's one of the best corners already.
- 13:20Speaker 2: And you just look at his pff is of his
- 13:22Speaker 2: DVOA stats and stuff. He shuts wide receivers down him
- 13:27Speaker 2: Jalen Jalen Phillips and the two tackles are just wrecking.
- 13:33Speaker 3: Havoc Nikobe Dean is great too.
- 13:35Speaker 2: I just like the great attacking defense, really thankful for
- 13:39Speaker 2: because they our offense is like we're starting to get there, right.
- 13:43Speaker 2: We saw the first staff against the Cowboys, second half,
- 13:46Speaker 2: they shiit the bed. We talked about it on Sunday
- 13:48Speaker 2: night but the defense is actulutely keeping this this team alive.
- 13:54Speaker 2: Everyone's talking about the Rams right now. The Rams are
- 13:56Speaker 2: the favorites. Uh, they should have beat the Eagles. Our
- 13:59Speaker 2: defense is better than theirs. Yeah, and they've got that
- 14:02Speaker 2: defense has gotten to a point where it's like we
- 14:05Speaker 2: could probably ride them to the Super Bowl if we
- 14:07Speaker 2: wanted to, or at least the NFC Championship Game. Super
- 14:10Speaker 2: thankful for not just like they're young too, Like that's
- 14:16Speaker 2: that's the best part. They're not veterans.
- 14:18Speaker 1: They're like one of the youngest defenses in the entire
- 14:20Speaker 1: league at this point.
- 14:21Speaker 3: And they're kicking ass. Yeah.
- 14:23Speaker 2: That's my favorite type of football, especially with the Eagles,
- 14:25Speaker 2: And I'm very thankful for Mitchell, Davis, Carter, and Phillips.
- 14:31Speaker 3: Very fun to watch.
- 14:32Speaker 1: Once again, perfect segue to my number two. Folks, we
- 14:37Speaker 1: did not go over this list with each other at
- 14:40Speaker 1: all before we hit the record button. For me, it
- 14:44Speaker 1: is the Eagles linebackers in particular because with Zach Bond
- 14:48Speaker 1: and na Kobe Dean, they each have three sacks so far.
- 14:52Speaker 1: This Season's first time since sacks became an official stat
- 14:56Speaker 1: that two Eagles linebackers have each had three sacks in
- 15:01Speaker 1: a consecutive season. In fact, the only other seasons were
- 15:03Speaker 1: two Eagles linebackers had three or more sacks were nineteen
- 15:07Speaker 1: ninety with Seth Joyner and Jesse Small, two thousand and
- 15:11Speaker 1: one Mike Caldwell and Jeremiah Trotter, and then twenty thirteen
- 15:15Speaker 1: Michael Kendricks and Demiko Ryans. And then just the emergence
- 15:21Speaker 1: of what I should say, who and what type of player?
- 15:24Speaker 1: Nikobe Dean has become a guy who has just riddled
- 15:27Speaker 1: with injuries during the first couple years of his tenure
- 15:31Speaker 1: as an Eagle, And we're all saying, boy, you know
- 15:34Speaker 1: how he reached for this guy who cannot stay healthy,
- 15:37Speaker 1: not able to get on the field with his lower
- 15:39Speaker 1: body injuries. And he had a sack in his third
- 15:43Speaker 1: straight game this past week, and he became only the
- 15:47Speaker 1: fourth Eagles linebacker with a sack in three consecutive games
- 15:52Speaker 1: since Michael Kendricks back in two fifteen. The only other
- 15:56Speaker 1: linebackers with sack in three straight games as well Seth
- 15:59Speaker 1: Joyner nineteen ninety one and William Thomas in nineteen ninety three.
- 16:04Speaker 1: How we understanding how important the linebacker position is. I
- 16:09Speaker 1: am so grateful for that because it helps in other
- 16:11Speaker 1: areas of the field, like you were just talking about
- 16:13Speaker 1: with Quinnon Mitchell and the secondary, and also how they're
- 16:17Speaker 1: able to utilize these guys, whether it's on various stunts
- 16:20Speaker 1: as well, helping Jalen Carter maybe possibly getting off a
- 16:24Speaker 1: double team or Jordan Davis with Jalen Phillips as well.
- 16:28Speaker 1: Now that like this entire defense is now not only
- 16:33Speaker 1: just predicated on what the defensive line is gonna do,
- 16:36Speaker 1: but what the linebackers are gonna be able to do
- 16:38Speaker 1: and contribute. Like, I'm so grateful for these Eagles linebackers
- 16:42Speaker 1: and that we actually have some powerhouses. Like it's fun.
- 16:45Speaker 1: It reminds me of like it reminds me of the
- 16:47Speaker 1: nineties watching those powerhouse Eagles defenses. Man, I'm not sure
- 16:52Speaker 1: do you mention Byron Evans. I don't think I mentioned
- 16:55Speaker 1: Byron Evans, but I should have one of my favorite
- 16:57Speaker 1: linebackers yas team or from like eighty nine to like
- 17:01Speaker 1: ninety four.
- 17:02Speaker 2: I thing he was great. Here's a weird story, by
- 17:06Speaker 2: the way about Byron Evans. Eighth grade, we had to
- 17:10Speaker 2: do it in arts. We had to do a project.
- 17:12Speaker 2: We had to paint like a face like a and
- 17:17Speaker 2: I decided to Byron Evans' picture from like the nineteen
- 17:20Speaker 2: eighty nine Eagles and book I bought at the games.
- 17:25Speaker 3: I have no idea why.
- 17:26Speaker 1: I just see this picture. It's long gone.
- 17:31Speaker 3: It's long gone.
- 17:31Speaker 2: But I remember my teacher being like, okay, right, everyone
- 17:36Speaker 2: was doing like famous people.
- 17:37Speaker 3: I did Byron Evans.
- 17:39Speaker 2: You're all proud, Like, hey, I was such a dork
- 17:43Speaker 2: for the Eagles back then. But no, like, and this
- 17:46Speaker 2: is a team famously like just that's never cared about
- 17:49Speaker 2: the linebacker position except for a couple of years here
- 17:52Speaker 2: and there. Yeah, And you know what's what's funny is
- 17:56Speaker 2: like when they cared about it, the team was really good. Yeah,
- 17:59Speaker 2: but you know, for years they didn't, and like right
- 18:01Speaker 2: now they have a phenomenal linebacking unit. I think Zach
- 18:05Speaker 2: Bond is better this year than last year. I think
- 18:07Speaker 2: he is, which is like kind of hard to imagine.
- 18:09Speaker 2: He was awesome in that Dallas game. I still can't
- 18:12Speaker 2: believe we lost that game.
- 18:13Speaker 1: I know he's he's become he is becoming the face
- 18:17Speaker 1: of the defense. He really is, And we haven't had
- 18:19Speaker 1: a linebacker like that. And how long it's crazy.
- 18:23Speaker 3: And it's Bill Burgie.
- 18:26Speaker 1: Bill Burgie.
- 18:26Speaker 3: Yeah, yeah, like it's been a long time.
- 18:29Speaker 1: Yea, yes, absolutely, man, it's I'm thankful for it for sure.
- 18:33Speaker 1: What's your number one?
- 18:34Speaker 3: Man?
- 18:34Speaker 1: I think we may be I think we may have
- 18:36Speaker 1: the same one.
- 18:37Speaker 3: This is easy. After last night's game, they lost by
- 18:41Speaker 3: forty one points to the Magic.
- 18:43Speaker 2: That was brutal to watch. I watched the whole thing.
- 18:46Speaker 2: Why because I'm I'm let me look at my back here,
- 18:50Speaker 2: I'm a Sixers nerd.
- 18:52Speaker 3: Watched it.
- 18:53Speaker 2: Maxi played his ass off. McCain looked good. But the
- 18:58Speaker 2: thing I'm most thankful for is just having j Edgecomb
- 19:01Speaker 2: on this team. Yeah, like you can actually see.
- 19:04Speaker 1: It, Like you're going with j I'm going, I'm going
- 19:07Speaker 1: with Tyrese. So that's I'm actually going with Tyrese, So
- 19:10Speaker 1: go ahead.
- 19:10Speaker 2: So I'm yeah, Like Tyrese is kind of a given.
- 19:14Speaker 3: I didn't think he'd be this good already.
- 19:16Speaker 2: Like he's twenty five years old and he's probably a
- 19:18Speaker 2: top ten player in the league right now, averaging what
- 19:21Speaker 2: thirty five.
- 19:22Speaker 3: Thirty six points again, which is just absurd.
- 19:26Speaker 2: But if this could be a one man team with
- 19:30Speaker 2: Paul George sitting and and uh McCain coming back and
- 19:34Speaker 2: Beach just not playing. This could be a hideous like
- 19:37Speaker 2: twenty two win team with Maxi just putting up a
- 19:39Speaker 2: shit ton of points. Yeah, with the addition of Edgecombe,
- 19:43Speaker 2: they got Lucky to the third pick, and they picked
- 19:44Speaker 2: the right guy, like you can kind of this team's
- 19:49Speaker 2: fun to watch when he's on the floor. They were okay,
- 19:52Speaker 2: they're fun to watch with Maxi. But with those two,
- 19:55Speaker 2: you've got your one two for the for the next
- 19:57Speaker 2: however freaking long.
- 19:59Speaker 3: You can think about it like they.
- 20:01Speaker 2: Had Iverson and Stackhouse back in like ninety six when
- 20:05Speaker 2: that first and when they first got Iverson, and that
- 20:08Speaker 2: was fun to watch. But this is different. These two
- 20:11Speaker 2: are just so athletic. They play well together. The kid
- 20:15Speaker 2: understands the game perfectly, knows where to be on the
- 20:17Speaker 2: court and to luck out like the way they did
- 20:20Speaker 2: and get.
- 20:20Speaker 3: Him at three.
- 20:22Speaker 2: It just it just it just makes the future look
- 20:25Speaker 2: so much more brighter. You got those those albatross contracts
- 20:30Speaker 2: on your neck right now with Embiid and Paul George.
- 20:33Speaker 2: But at least you can be like, okay when those
- 20:36Speaker 2: come off the books, or at least when Paul George
- 20:38Speaker 2: comes off the books or if you can come back
- 20:40Speaker 2: and play. I'm still positive about him honestly, and beat,
- 20:42Speaker 2: I think it's just cooked. But like you got something
- 20:45Speaker 2: like if they didn't get the third pick, this team
- 20:49Speaker 2: would be scary bad to watch right now.
- 20:52Speaker 1: I got I go back to I go back to
- 20:53Speaker 1: the draft lottery night when Darryl Morey when he heard
- 20:57Speaker 1: number three and he just put his head right down
- 21:00Speaker 1: on it. He was like he was like, oh my gosh,
- 21:03Speaker 1: like like the weight of the world was just lifted
- 21:07Speaker 1: off of him. And that's what That's what VJ Edgecumb
- 21:09Speaker 1: has been.
- 21:10Speaker 2: The scariest part was when the announcer was like, the
- 21:12Speaker 2: Sixers lost their pick. Yeah, and and Maury heard it
- 21:17Speaker 2: and thought that was real. Yeah, and we all heard
- 21:20Speaker 2: it at home and it was like, oh my god,
- 21:22Speaker 2: this is the worst night of my life. Yes, okay,
- 21:24Speaker 2: he's got our pick. This sucks, yep. And they looked
- 21:27Speaker 2: out and got this. This this kid could be like
- 21:30Speaker 2: not a superstar, but I think he can be like
- 21:33Speaker 2: a two guard with with.
- 21:36Speaker 3: His ceiling is obviously Dwyane Wae. We talked about it, yep.
- 21:41Speaker 2: But to have him and Maxie at twenty and twenty
- 21:44Speaker 2: five years old, like you find you have something, just
- 21:48Speaker 2: like the Flyers have young athletic like it's there and.
- 21:53Speaker 1: It doesn't need to be a complete really yes, yes,
- 21:56Speaker 1: And can you.
- 21:56Speaker 2: Imagine this year watching Ace Bailey average four points three
- 22:01Speaker 2: rebounds a game with Maxi scoring forty and you you're
- 22:05Speaker 2: in the lottery, Like there's no and you're.
- 22:07Speaker 3: Like, what is what is going to happen with this team? Yeah?
- 22:09Speaker 2: At least now you're like you have something, like we know,
- 22:12Speaker 2: like down the road, like two years from now, Paul
- 22:15Speaker 2: George comes off the books.
- 22:16Speaker 3: You can sign somebody else, you can draft somebody else.
- 22:18Speaker 2: But yeah, it thank god you have something with the
- 22:25Speaker 2: Sixers because guess who has our pick in the first round?
- 22:28Speaker 3: Okay see, okay, see and they just won. They're like
- 22:31Speaker 3: fucking fourteen as exactly.
- 22:35Speaker 1: Look my number, my number one here is Tyrus Maxi.
- 22:38Speaker 1: But to go with what you're saying, it doesn't have
- 22:41Speaker 1: to be a rebuild in the future. It's retooling, but
- 22:44Speaker 1: it's not a rebuild. I mean, the Flyers have been
- 22:47Speaker 1: rebuilding now, like we were talking about, they've been rebuilding
- 22:51Speaker 1: and they're in a good spot, a good position with
- 22:53Speaker 1: their rebuild. The Sixers do not have to rebuild, And
- 22:56Speaker 1: it really is it because of VJ. Edgecumbe and my
- 22:59Speaker 1: numbnumber one here on this list in Tyrese Maxi. Because
- 23:03Speaker 1: with Maxi, I think for me, I love that Maxi
- 23:07Speaker 1: can be that beyond a reliable player nearly every night
- 23:11Speaker 1: to just be entertaining for us. You know, in an
- 23:15Speaker 1: era where Joe ell Embiid's health status felt like it
- 23:19Speaker 1: determined whether the Sixers were gonna win or lose before
- 23:22Speaker 1: tip off even happened. It's it's like beyond refreshing to
- 23:26Speaker 1: know that there is a player talent like him, this
- 23:30Speaker 1: point guard that is good and you mentioned it like
- 23:33Speaker 1: he's going to make his first All NBA appearance this season,
- 23:36Speaker 1: and he is quote the guy on this team right now.
- 23:40Speaker 1: Never in a million years did I think two years
- 23:43Speaker 1: ago that this kid would be in this position, that
- 23:46Speaker 1: this twenty five year old would be in this position,
- 23:49Speaker 1: embiating Paul George making over one hundred million dollars combined
- 23:53Speaker 1: this season rarely in the lineup. I know, it's crazy,
- 23:57Speaker 1: you know, I mean, the team's resources are poorted to
- 24:00Speaker 1: these two name brand players who have histories as elite scorers.
- 24:04Speaker 1: But Tyrese Maxi has stepped into this new echelon of
- 24:09Speaker 1: potential greatness to I hesitate to say greatness, but like
- 24:14Speaker 1: you were just saying, you know, the future is not
- 24:17Speaker 1: dog shit because of Tyrese Maxey and because of VJ.
- 24:20Speaker 1: Edgecomb as well, but there is hope for the future.
- 24:23Speaker 1: And that's why he's number one. I'm so grateful for
- 24:26Speaker 1: Tyres Maxey.
- 24:28Speaker 3: Well, and here's the difference, Like man like number one,
- 24:33Speaker 3: I'm forty nine years old, right, there was a point
- 24:36Speaker 3: in time where my dad, like before the Phillies won.
- 24:38Speaker 2: The World Series No. Eight, it was like are they
- 24:41Speaker 2: ever gonna win? Yeah, they keep trying to rebuild. They
- 24:45Speaker 2: keep trying to rebuild, like in early two thousands. I'm
- 24:48Speaker 2: with the sixer at this point, like, I don't know
- 24:50Speaker 2: if I can handle another rebuild at forty nine years old.
- 24:53Speaker 3: Yeah. I went through the process. It was horrendous.
- 24:57Speaker 2: It got us, it got us a c it got
- 25:00Speaker 2: us some success, but we never made it past the
- 25:02Speaker 2: second round. I don't think I could handle another rebuild around.
- 25:09Speaker 2: But on the other side, to give him kudos, like
- 25:14Speaker 2: there was a point in time like two years ago,
- 25:15Speaker 2: is like could you win a title with him being
- 25:18Speaker 2: your third best player?
- 25:19Speaker 3: Yeah. Last year, could you win him a title with
- 25:21Speaker 3: him being your second best player? Yeah?
- 25:23Speaker 2: And this year it's like, could you want a title
- 25:25Speaker 2: with him being your best player? The answer is yes, yes,
- 25:28Speaker 2: Like that's like that's how good he's gotten and he's
- 25:32Speaker 2: all the credit in the world to how hard he's worked.
- 25:35Speaker 2: That three point step back shot he does from like
- 25:37Speaker 2: five feet behind three point is insane. I don't and
- 25:41Speaker 2: thank you James Harden, by the way, who was on
- 25:44Speaker 2: the sixers, like he he talks about him like that
- 25:46Speaker 2: he was such a mentor and taught him that move
- 25:48Speaker 2: and like how to perfect it, and he really has,
- 25:51Speaker 2: like he has perfected it even beyond Harden yep, who
- 25:55Speaker 2: like it's kind of his bread and butter. But the
- 25:57Speaker 2: great thing about him is like Harden get to the lane.
- 25:59Speaker 2: But but Maxi the broad shoulders is so goddamn quick.
- 26:04Speaker 2: Harden was quick too, but not as quick as Maxi. Right,
- 26:06Speaker 2: Like he can do the step back fake three go
- 26:09Speaker 2: to the rim and it's so goddamn fast.
- 26:12Speaker 3: And to have VJ coming off out of.
- 26:15Speaker 2: The corner for a possible dunk like on the like
- 26:18Speaker 2: they have something there. Thank God, because I'm thankful for
- 26:21Speaker 2: that because, like I said, I'm I'm getting old. I
- 26:24Speaker 2: can't do another process, no fucking way.
- 26:28Speaker 1: What a great list, a fantastic list. And we are
- 26:31Speaker 1: going to take a break here. But if you're watching

- 26:50Speaker 1: Just search out the Philadelphia Sports Table. Good, search out
- 26:53Speaker 1: Eric and myself. We are going to take a break.
- 26:55Speaker 1: When we get back, we're gonna dive in a little
- 26:57Speaker 1: bit more Sixers talk, just a little bit more before
- 26:59Speaker 1: we get to some of our other discussions Philadelphia Union
- 27:02Speaker 1: and Philadelphia Eagles. Stick with us, all right, We are
- 27:07Speaker 1: back and we're gonna dive into some some brief Sixers
- 27:11Speaker 1: talk here before Eric, before I let you go, look,
- 27:15Speaker 1: this team has been coming back down to earth from
- 27:18Speaker 1: an amazing start to the season. There are various injuries
- 27:22Speaker 1: that have happened with this team. Inbeid Paul George. Still,
- 27:26Speaker 1: you know, things are just up in the air with them.
- 27:28Speaker 1: I gotta tell you, though, I'm very concerned about We
- 27:32Speaker 1: were just talking about Tyres Maxey, how we are grateful
- 27:34Speaker 1: for him, grateful for VJ as well, But with Tyres
- 27:37Speaker 1: Maxi at this point in time trotting him out for
- 27:42Speaker 1: thirty plus minutes basically per game, is are forty minutes
- 27:47Speaker 1: I should say forty minutes per game thirty When am
- 27:49Speaker 1: I talking about forty minutes per game basically? At this point,
- 27:52Speaker 1: I'm getting really concerned with it. He's leading the league
- 27:56Speaker 1: in total minutes played and minutes per game again, forty minutes.
- 28:00Speaker 1: Nick Nurse and the Sixers are gonna run this dude
- 28:01Speaker 1: into the ground early where you know, who knows what's
- 28:06Speaker 1: gonna what we're gonna see from Tyris Maxi. Maybe in
- 28:09Speaker 1: February and March, but they're really kicking the shit out
- 28:12Speaker 1: of him, and I'm kind of concerned about it. At
- 28:14Speaker 1: this point, Are you concerned at all about the minutes
- 28:17Speaker 1: that he's playing. It's fun to watch him, but I'm kind.
- 28:19Speaker 3: Of concerned, tremendously concerned.
- 28:24Speaker 2: Yeah, it's he's your best player, and there is like
- 28:29Speaker 2: besides him being like super athletic and the way he
- 28:32Speaker 2: plays like it could lead to injury the way he
- 28:35Speaker 2: plays sometimes when he goes to the rim, and the
- 28:38Speaker 2: fact that Edgecomb is also like the fact that Edgecomb's
- 28:41Speaker 2: also playing like thirty eight to forty minutes is very concerning.
- 28:44Speaker 2: That is too, Yes, because he takes a lot of
- 28:47Speaker 2: pressure off off Maxi. When he does play, it just goes,
- 28:54Speaker 2: it goes right to the heart of like Georgian embiid
- 28:57Speaker 2: not playing, putting all this pressure on this kid who's
- 29:02Speaker 2: he is playoff ready, he's ready to win a championship,
- 29:05Speaker 2: but he does not have the tools around him yet. Yeah,
- 29:08Speaker 2: so you had to you had to balance that with
- 29:10Speaker 2: like how hard do you want it?
- 29:12Speaker 3: How hard do you want him to play? And do
- 29:16Speaker 3: you want to win?
- 29:17Speaker 4: Right?
- 29:17Speaker 2: Yeah, because he has nothing around it. Like last night
- 29:20Speaker 2: was just last night was a joke. Like I was
- 29:23Speaker 2: so annoyed. I'm just like, once they went down by
- 29:27Speaker 2: like twenty five, I'm like, just sit Maxi for the game.
- 29:29Speaker 3: Yeah, don't don't.
- 29:30Speaker 1: Bother because they need to keep him out there.
- 29:33Speaker 2: It's a complete waste of time because you're getting smoked.
- 29:36Speaker 2: And I mean, I like the other pieces around him,
- 29:40Speaker 2: Like last night, they tried hard, but like it was
- 29:43Speaker 2: just it was it was a complete loss.
- 29:45Speaker 3: Uh, all over the board. It was just like you
- 29:48Speaker 3: had no shot.
- 29:51Speaker 2: But if if these other guys come back, like like
- 29:54Speaker 2: they they play Friday night the next two games, like
- 29:57Speaker 2: they could win. They got the nets in their unbroke Clyn,
- 30:00Speaker 2: Brooklyn is horrible, Cam Thomas is out. Then you have
- 30:04Speaker 2: the Hawks at home and it looks like Edgecombe, George
- 30:09Speaker 2: and Bead and Boner are our game time decisions and
- 30:14Speaker 2: like eventually want to tell these other guys like just
- 30:18Speaker 2: fucking play and see what happens. Like this kid, this
- 30:21Speaker 2: kid's out here busting his ass. I think Nurse is
- 30:25Speaker 2: doing a good job coaching wise, and he's doing what
- 30:27Speaker 2: he can with what he has.
- 30:29Speaker 3: He's definitely bounced back. Like last year, he just kind
- 30:32Speaker 3: of gave up. And I, I I get it. I don't.
- 30:35Speaker 2: I don't understand why totally, because you make around the money.
- 30:38Speaker 2: But at the same time, like, what the hell are
- 30:40Speaker 2: you gonna do? You had to tank for the pick
- 30:43Speaker 2: this year you don't have your fucking pick, So like,
- 30:45Speaker 2: why why don't tank any games besides last night? Like
- 30:52Speaker 2: I this is the first time I told you before
- 30:54Speaker 2: the show is like after after they went five and one,
- 30:58Speaker 2: I'm like, okay, I could see the five seed. Like
- 31:00Speaker 2: we talked in the preseason show, like the like the
- 31:04Speaker 2: ceiling is a five seed.
- 31:06Speaker 3: The basement is like in the lottery.
- 31:08Speaker 2: If all these guys just get hurt the way they're running,
- 31:11Speaker 2: Maxi and Edge coming into the ground, that basement is
- 31:15Speaker 2: possible right now. But they don't have their own picks,
- 31:17Speaker 2: so like, you got to avoid that at all costs.
- 31:20Speaker 2: There's no fucking way you want Okac I no, like
- 31:23Speaker 2: the number eight pick of the draftic nightmare. Yeah, I
- 31:27Speaker 2: think it's only top four protected. But like right now,
- 31:30Speaker 2: the first time this year, I have no clue if
- 31:34Speaker 2: they're going to be the five seed lottery or like
- 31:37Speaker 2: the play in no idea, but we talked about it
- 31:40Speaker 2: like that that was their range, and they're just all
- 31:43Speaker 2: it's like buckshot, Like I have no idea which where
- 31:46Speaker 2: they're going to hit.
- 31:46Speaker 1: Yeah, I want at this point, as I'm thinking about
- 31:50Speaker 1: this Sixers team in the future, as I'm thinking about
- 31:52Speaker 1: Maxie as well, I want a full season of Maxi
- 31:57Speaker 1: leading the Sixers on a path to just playing some
- 32:00Speaker 1: real compelling and entertaining basketball. I want him leading this
- 32:04Speaker 1: young Sixers cores deep into a first round series against
- 32:10Speaker 1: which is probably gonna be a better playoff opponent. What
- 32:12Speaker 1: I don't want is it to be January and we're
- 32:15Speaker 1: all receiving just a horrific push notification on our phones
- 32:20Speaker 1: about Maxie being injured, you know, just due to being overworked,
- 32:24Speaker 1: you know what I mean. I know I got to
- 32:25Speaker 1: knock on wood here, knock on my desk here. That's
- 32:29Speaker 1: what I don't want. And I don't know the way
- 32:32Speaker 1: the way it's going here. You know, this is Philly sports.
- 32:36Speaker 1: This is the Sixers too so.
- 32:39Speaker 2: Like and this is the point too late, Like embiad
- 32:42Speaker 2: is embiid, his knees are shot.
- 32:44Speaker 3: It's yeah, I understand.
- 32:45Speaker 2: But like Paul George has played and I've watched both
- 32:49Speaker 2: games or two or three games that he played in,
- 32:51Speaker 2: and I was like, he looks okay, he's hitting some
- 32:53Speaker 2: some threes, he's playing d and then he's gain time
- 32:57Speaker 2: decision the next game, and I'm just like, hey, dickhead,
- 33:01Speaker 2: we're paying you man, Like, yeah, get your ass out
- 33:04Speaker 2: there and play like I.
- 33:07Speaker 1: At this point, yeah, get out of the sweatpants. The
- 33:10Speaker 1: gray sweatsuit guy. He loves the grace I mean they're
- 33:13Speaker 1: probably really expensive. He probably buys him like some fancy
- 33:15Speaker 1: Dan place I've never heard of before.
- 33:19Speaker 3: But uh, how.
- 33:22Speaker 2: About you wear those over your jersey, rip it off
- 33:24Speaker 2: before the game, and they go play, because like, you've
- 33:27Speaker 2: actually looked good. If you're saving yourself for something, go
- 33:31Speaker 2: fuck yourself. Yeah, because like, yes, your team needs you
- 33:34Speaker 2: right now. And he would if him and Edgecombe and
- 33:38Speaker 2: Maxie were playing and and MB was not playing, at
- 33:41Speaker 2: least you have a shot, you know what I mean?
- 33:43Speaker 2: Like that, that's the most disheartening thing, like I because
- 33:47Speaker 2: he did look half decent, and it's like he would
- 33:51Speaker 2: be a huge key to them actually, like making that
- 33:53Speaker 2: playoff run.
- 33:55Speaker 3: We're not even December yet, but like.
- 33:57Speaker 2: Right, I can read the tea leaves kind of thing,
- 34:02Speaker 2: and if he's not going to participate and go all in,
- 34:06Speaker 2: we're kind of in trouble. So I yeah, I is
- 34:10Speaker 2: the basement our basement prediction on the table. Yeah, kind of.
- 34:14Speaker 2: I still think we're gonna do that playing kind of
- 34:16Speaker 2: thing in the middle, but it's honestly, it's kind of
- 34:19Speaker 2: on George at this point, which is scary. Yeah, because
- 34:22Speaker 2: he's kind of a douche and.
- 34:25Speaker 1: Yep, well, folks, Happy Thanksgiving to you when you are

- 34:44Speaker 1: you mean exactly? Have a great Thanksgiving buddy. Any any
- 34:50Speaker 1: final thoughts before let you go here.
- 34:53Speaker 3: No, I'm gonna finish prepping food for tomorrow.
- 34:56Speaker 1: All right, very good? Sounds good? All right, folks, real quick,
- 34:59Speaker 1: Philadelphia Sports about gmail dot com. Let us know what

- 35:03Speaker 1: from you, and we'll read your email here on the
- 35:05Speaker 1: show and respond to it. We're gonna take a break
- 35:07Speaker 1: when we get back. Didn't dive into some Philadelphia Union
- 35:10Speaker 1: and then some Philadelphia Eagles talk as well? Stick with
- 35:13Speaker 1: us all right, now, we got to get into this
- 35:16Speaker 1: Philadelphia Union team. We have one of our awesome guests,
- 35:21Speaker 1: our first guest this week on the show from Philadelphia
- 35:25Speaker 1: soccernow dot com, to dive into the disappointing end to
- 35:29Speaker 1: the Philadelphia Union season, as well as another story that
- 35:33Speaker 1: we're gonna be diving into. With regard to the Union
- 35:37Speaker 1: staff and personnel, We've got our friend Josh Schuster. Buddy Man,
- 35:40Speaker 1: thanks so much for joining us. You always help us
- 35:43Speaker 1: out with our Eagles postgame shows and whenever we need
- 35:46Speaker 1: to talk to Union. So I appreciate you taking the time.
- 35:48Speaker 3: Man.
- 35:49Speaker 4: Yeah, anytime, Jeff, always my pleasure.
- 35:51Speaker 1: We got to get into the end of the Philadelphia
- 35:53Speaker 1: Union's playoff run. Oh my gosh. They were taking on
- 35:57Speaker 1: New York this past week, and I'll I'll say this
- 36:00Speaker 1: part of me had some skepticism because the Union have
- 36:03Speaker 1: just they've not been playing well after returning from an
- 36:06Speaker 1: international break towards the end of the season. There's been
- 36:10Speaker 1: some ups and downs with this team. But then given
- 36:12Speaker 1: where this season had gone, I had hope that they
- 36:16Speaker 1: would be able to get through the conference semifinal. Didn't happen.
- 36:20Speaker 1: They lose one to nothing. Boy, they crashed out big time.
- 36:24Speaker 1: So what are your thoughts here on the exit of
- 36:28Speaker 1: the Philadelphia Union from this postseason and just I guess
- 36:31Speaker 1: the season overall, man, So I.
- 36:34Speaker 4: Think it's two different things. If we're gonna talk about
- 36:38Speaker 4: the season overall. This has been a very successful season. Yes,
- 36:43Speaker 4: no one and I mean no one had the Union
- 36:46Speaker 4: winning the Supporter Shield or even in the playoffs, including
- 36:51Speaker 4: many writers that cover the team. It was kind of
- 36:54Speaker 4: viewed as a we're gonna let the players who are
- 36:58Speaker 4: older either A finish their contracts or B try to
- 37:03Speaker 4: have them play enough that somebody would want to buy them.
- 37:07Speaker 4: And that was kind of the idea, and we'll give
- 37:09Speaker 4: some of the kids a chance. If we're talking playoffs.
- 37:14Speaker 4: To me, depending upon how the season goes, expectations can shift, right,
- 37:20Speaker 4: and so I think for me, being that the Union
- 37:25Speaker 4: were the Supporters Shield winners for the season, my level
- 37:29Speaker 4: of expectation had really skyrocketed compared to the beginning of
- 37:32Speaker 4: the season. I think that's how most people would say
- 37:35Speaker 4: it they played their first So I've mentioned this before.
- 37:42Speaker 4: I hate the way the MLS does the playoffs. I
- 37:45Speaker 4: think it's a very as a football fan globally, it
- 37:51Speaker 4: is probably the dumbest format and it's very much Americanized.
- 37:56Speaker 4: I hate the fact that the first round is two
- 37:58Speaker 4: matches one and then after that it's not anymore. It's
- 38:03Speaker 4: not even consistent.
- 38:05Speaker 1: No consistency at all to the postseason. No consistency, and
- 38:08Speaker 1: what does that do to the actual players? What does
- 38:10Speaker 1: it do to momentum? What? You know? What is it?
- 38:13Speaker 1: What does it do to the vibes of a team
- 38:15Speaker 1: like like the Union who were who were really kind
- 38:17Speaker 1: of like right and high again, like I said, after
- 38:19Speaker 1: the international break, some ups and downs, but still the
- 38:22Speaker 1: vibes were there. Things were good.
- 38:25Speaker 4: Yeah, And if you look at the first round the
- 38:28Speaker 4: Union really they played one kind of rough, rough match
- 38:34Speaker 4: and then really dominated to seal up the victory. And
- 38:41Speaker 4: then we got to the most recent game against NYCFC
- 38:46Speaker 4: and I don't really know what happened. Andre Blake clearly
- 38:53Speaker 4: was not himself and he wound up leaving the match.
- 38:58Speaker 4: The the Union had a bunch of pressure on just
- 39:00Speaker 4: nothing was going in.
- 39:02Speaker 1: Their best chances came at the end of the.
- 39:03Speaker 4: Game, correct, And this this match. I've been very kind
- 39:10Speaker 4: towards Carnell pretty much all season because I think he's
- 39:13Speaker 4: deserved it. I have very serious issues with how he
- 39:19Speaker 4: chose to manage that playoff match. He keeps wanting to
- 39:24Speaker 4: make mikel Uha a thing in that match, and I'm
- 39:27Speaker 4: not sure why because he had really kind of gone
- 39:29Speaker 4: away from him during the season, which was the right move.
- 39:32Speaker 4: Mikel Ua started off well and then just faded and
- 39:35Speaker 4: basically disappeared for the season, and for some reason, Carnell decides, well,
- 39:41Speaker 4: let's just feature mkel Uha and this is gonna work
- 39:44Speaker 4: out well, and it didn't. The other thing is Kevin
- 39:48Speaker 4: Sullivan hasn't played at all pretty much this year. So
- 39:52Speaker 4: one of your end of the game situations is bringing
- 39:55Speaker 4: someone on who hasn't played pretty much all year.
- 39:58Speaker 1: Very questionable.
- 39:59Speaker 4: Yeah, really, And to be like, I'll be perfectly honest
- 40:03Speaker 4: with you. I know that he has a deal with
- 40:05Speaker 4: Man City and all this. From what I've seen in
- 40:08Speaker 4: his time playing with Union, it hasn't been very impressive. Now,
- 40:13Speaker 4: again that's a very limited plot sample size and that's
- 40:17Speaker 4: not necessarily fair to him. But I can only judge
- 40:21Speaker 4: based off of what I've seen in him wearing a
- 40:23Speaker 4: Union kit, and it really wasn't all that spectacular. Now,
- 40:27Speaker 4: maybe next year will be different. I know at the
- 40:30Speaker 4: Union two level he did well, and I know that
- 40:34Speaker 4: with the US national team, the U seventeen I guess
- 40:38Speaker 4: it is team, he's done very well there and that's great,
- 40:41Speaker 4: But he's not playing against grown men in those rights,
- 40:44Speaker 4: right And that's the problem when you play in the MLS,
- 40:48Speaker 4: you're playing against grown men who are also doing this
- 40:51Speaker 4: for a living. He really was, frankly, and I think
- 40:55Speaker 4: it's not fair to him. It just was very underwhelming.
- 40:59Speaker 4: So I have this this loss and the end of
- 41:02Speaker 4: the season I put on Carnal for as much yeah
- 41:05Speaker 4: praise as we gave him this year.
- 41:07Speaker 3: Very puzzling.
- 41:09Speaker 4: The players looked a little lost until the second half.
- 41:13Speaker 4: And if you waste away one half, as the Eagles
- 41:16Speaker 4: found out on Sunday, yep, you can't come back from it.
- 41:21Speaker 4: And that's really kind of what happened.
- 41:23Speaker 1: Let us know what you're thinking about the end of
- 41:25Speaker 1: the Union season. Philadelphia Sports Table at gmail dot com.
- 41:28Speaker 1: Love to read your email here on the show and
- 41:30Speaker 1: respond to it. Josh, I definitely want to have you
- 41:32Speaker 1: on the show at some point in the future where
- 41:34Speaker 1: we can talk more about where the Union go from here,
- 41:37Speaker 1: what the expectations may be for the twenty twenty six season.
- 41:41Speaker 1: But Buddy, before I let you go, we need to
- 41:43Speaker 1: talk about a story coming out of the Philadelphia Union
- 41:47Speaker 1: that really, you know, I think you know, sent somewhat
- 41:50Speaker 1: of a shockwave, you know through the MLS world. And
- 41:54Speaker 1: of course through the front offices of the Philadelphia Union.
- 41:58Speaker 1: And that is the fact that Ernst Tanner, the sporting director,
- 42:01Speaker 1: has been placed on administrative leave after Major League Soccer
- 42:04Speaker 1: reopened its investigation into alleged misconduct by him in the
- 42:10Speaker 1: Union front office. Now, what does that misconduct consist of,
- 42:14Speaker 1: Whether it's through a report that was actually done by
- 42:19Speaker 1: the Guardian, Ernst Tanner being accused of racist talk, sexist talk,
- 42:26Speaker 1: you know, being quote sexually inappropriate with a member of
- 42:30Speaker 1: the staff, homophobic slurs and remarks as well. So this
- 42:35Speaker 1: is going to be an issue. This is going to
- 42:36Speaker 1: be a big issue this off season for this Union
- 42:39Speaker 1: team organization where they go in the future. What are
- 42:41Speaker 1: your thoughts here, buddy.
- 42:44Speaker 4: So the first thing I want to say is I'm
- 42:45Speaker 4: going to reference the article from the Guardian by Pablo
- 42:49Speaker 4: Iglesias mar yep. And I want to make sure that
- 42:53Speaker 4: I make this abundantly clear. Pablo is very well respected. Yes,
- 42:56Speaker 4: this is not an individual that you know, is you
- 43:00Speaker 4: know Billy Bob, you know, sitting on the sofa in
- 43:02Speaker 4: his mom's basement.
- 43:04Speaker 1: Yeah, he is not a hot takes guy at all.
- 43:06Speaker 4: He's not a hot takes guy. He's very pointed in
- 43:10Speaker 4: his writing, and he even says that my writing isn't
- 43:12Speaker 4: for everyone. And he was let go from the Athletic
- 43:17Speaker 4: after being there for almost eight years. He was one
- 43:20Speaker 4: of my favorite writers to read as a part of
- 43:23Speaker 4: the Athletic, but he did have some freelance pieces and
- 43:27Speaker 4: this happened to be one of them. And Pablo is
- 43:30Speaker 4: very connected in MLS circles, so I want to make
- 43:32Speaker 4: sure like that was his sole focus for years and
- 43:38Speaker 4: still continues to be his focus, and so I want
- 43:41Speaker 4: to make sure that we understand that this is coming
- 43:43Speaker 4: from a credible place. The other thing is is we
- 43:47Speaker 4: live in a day in an age where it's okay
- 43:52Speaker 4: to have said positive things about someone and then information
- 43:57Speaker 4: like this comes out and it's okay to change that opinion.
- 44:00Speaker 4: And I have applauded on this show multiple times. Ernst Tanner, yes,
- 44:04Speaker 4: because he found a way to be able to navigate,
- 44:09Speaker 4: as Pablo says, the archaic rules of MLS. They really
- 44:14Speaker 4: want MLS americanized, and they have terrible rules and it's
- 44:18Speaker 4: very hard to build a team in MLS that can
- 44:20Speaker 4: compete year after year. And Ernst Tanner found a book
- 44:23Speaker 4: on a way to do that, and I was never
- 44:25Speaker 4: really fan of letting him go before. This is what
- 44:28Speaker 4: I should say. I want to highlight, just quickly some
- 44:31Speaker 4: of the stuff, and I'm going to read directly from
- 44:34Speaker 4: the Guardian article because I think that it's important. I
- 44:36Speaker 4: don't want to put words in Pablo's mouth. Absolutely, So
- 44:41Speaker 4: this is what he says. Here are some of the
- 44:43Speaker 4: allegations that he's facing. He made multiple misogynistic comments, including
- 44:47Speaker 4: saying women don't belong in men's soccer about a female
- 44:50Speaker 4: MLS referee, and telling a gathering of academy players they
- 44:54Speaker 4: should never worry about a referee unless she's a woman.
- 44:57Speaker 4: She spoke about black players, or he spoke about black
- 45:01Speaker 4: players like they were subhuman, and suggested that black referees
- 45:04Speaker 4: lack intelligence and capability. He touched coworker in appropriately inappropriately
- 45:10Speaker 4: numerous times, an allegation for which he was reported to
- 45:12Speaker 4: the union's HR department, which is a whole separate thing.
- 45:16Speaker 4: Like if this has been reported ahead of time and
- 45:18Speaker 4: they chose to do nothing about it, that's on the
- 45:21Speaker 4: union and that's really a problem. He hired an underqualified
- 45:25Speaker 4: coach who was allegedly abusive towards players on the Philadelphia
- 45:28Speaker 4: Union two Club, which is the Union's reserve team that
- 45:33Speaker 4: is used as approving ground for young players from its
- 45:36Speaker 4: thriving academy. Now, Jeff, I'm going to spare some of
- 45:41Speaker 4: the stuff that he actually said, because it is reported
- 45:44Speaker 4: in the Guardian article, and the stuff that he's saying
- 45:46Speaker 4: is loud enough that fans in the stands could hear him.
- 45:50Speaker 4: This isn't like whispered down the lane, like these things
- 45:53Speaker 4: were actually heard, because they're graphics discussing very inappropriate. It's disgusting.
- 45:58Speaker 3: Yep.
- 45:59Speaker 4: Now, again these are allegations, but this really was. It
- 46:03Speaker 4: was almost a week ago. It was eight days ago.
- 46:06Speaker 4: This bombshell came out. The Union's response was we're going
- 46:10Speaker 4: to put him on administrative leave. But that doesn't really
- 46:13Speaker 4: give me a lot of confidence if you have an
- 46:15Speaker 4: employee that is saying this person is doing to me
- 46:17Speaker 4: this to me numerous times, and you're not going to
- 46:20Speaker 4: do anything that's not okay. So there's a lot in
- 46:23Speaker 4: this whole thing that is not okay. But what it
- 46:25Speaker 4: sounds to me like the Union have a culture problem,
- 46:30Speaker 4: and I'm wondering this is pure speculation. This season before
- 46:34Speaker 4: was very disappointing for the union.
- 46:36Speaker 3: Jim Curtin.
- 46:38Speaker 4: I wonder the impact that this story is going to
- 46:40Speaker 4: have on him because he was a manager here for
- 46:43Speaker 4: an extended period of time, pretty much the whole time
- 46:46Speaker 4: of Ernst Tanner, and there's a lot of behind the
- 46:49Speaker 4: scenes stuff that's going on that I'm wondering if this
- 46:53Speaker 4: is going to hurt him as well. I'm not speculating
- 46:56Speaker 4: that Jim Curtin is a part of this in any way,
- 46:58Speaker 4: shape or form, but it may make it a challenge
- 47:01Speaker 4: for new adventures for him.
- 47:03Speaker 1: Absolutely.
- 47:04Speaker 4: Overall, I would say my personal response, I don't want
- 47:09Speaker 4: to tie Philadelphia Soccer now into this.
- 47:11Speaker 3: I'm very disappointed.
- 47:12Speaker 4: I'm disappointed Ernest Tanner. I'm disappointed with the union that
- 47:16Speaker 4: we can't take in this this day and age inappropriate
- 47:20Speaker 4: touching seriously, yeah, exactly, yep, And that you're not going
- 47:24Speaker 4: to listen to your employees that that's especially if there's
- 47:27Speaker 4: enough smoke that you might want to really consider what
- 47:31Speaker 4: this person is saying. So just overall, it was a
- 47:35Speaker 4: really bad week for the Philadelphia Union.
- 47:38Speaker 1: Yes, terrible, and there are going to be repercussions for
- 47:41Speaker 1: the union at some point, you know, like you said,
- 47:44Speaker 1: these are allegations. Yes, these are allegations, but these are
- 47:48Speaker 1: serious allegations, very very serious allegations. And even if anything
- 47:53Speaker 1: were to be overblown with these allegations, I think that
- 47:59Speaker 1: there is going to be some sort of accountability coming
- 48:02Speaker 1: from Major League Soccer in some way, shape or form.
- 48:05Speaker 1: We're gonna let this play out. We're certainly gonna keep
- 48:07Speaker 1: talking about it here at the PSD podcast show. Would
- 48:10Speaker 1: love to have you, Josh involved in those conversations in
- 48:13Speaker 1: the future. Really appreciated your take on them, because we
- 48:17Speaker 1: talk about social based issues on this show. You know,
- 48:19Speaker 1: It's one of the reasons why, you know, we remember
- 48:22Speaker 1: back in the day when we talked about the Colin
- 48:24Speaker 1: Kaepernick situation. We lost some folks, we lost some listeners,
- 48:28Speaker 1: and I really don't care, because sometimes social based issues
- 48:32Speaker 1: come into sports, and when they do, they when they
- 48:35Speaker 1: are are, are important to us here at this podcast platform,
- 48:38Speaker 1: we want to discuss and we want to dive into them.
- 48:40Speaker 1: I appreciate you, my friend. I do, thank you so
- 48:43Speaker 1: much for taking the time here. Let's talk again at
- 48:45Speaker 1: some point down the road. Hey, i'd be hopefully I'll
- 48:47Speaker 1: see you doing an Eagles postgame show. At some point
- 48:49Speaker 1: here down the road as well.
- 48:51Speaker 3: All right, sounds good.
- 48:52Speaker 1: Thank you my friend again, folks Philadelphia soccernow dot Com.
- 48:55Speaker 1: Josh and his buddies over there doing a fantastic job.
- 48:58Speaker 1: We're gonna go to break and when we get back,
- 49:00Speaker 1: we're gonna have a ton of Eagles talk. We're gonna
- 49:02Speaker 1: be diving into this team, the offense of the defense
- 49:03Speaker 1: of what we're gonna be seeing from them in the future.
- 49:06Speaker 1: Stick with us.
- 49:08Speaker 3: And now on the table, all right.
- 49:13Speaker 1: In joining us to dive into this Philadelphia Eagles team.
- 49:16Speaker 1: As the regular season is at the end of it
- 49:20Speaker 1: is approaching. We are in the home stretch here, and
- 49:23Speaker 1: there are a lot of questions surrounding this Eagles team,
- 49:25Speaker 1: especially from an offensive standpoint. We're gonna be diving into
- 49:28Speaker 1: that with our guests from the Lockedown Eagles Podcast. I
- 49:31Speaker 1: subscribe on Apple Podcast. You can also watch over on
- 49:34Speaker 1: YouTube Spotify as well. We've got the one and only
- 49:38Speaker 1: Lou Debiassi Lou Buddy Man. Thanks so much for jumping
- 49:40Speaker 1: on and dive into this Eagles team with us. Man.
- 49:42Speaker 5: Yeah, absolutely, Jeff, I was telling you before the show.
- 49:45Speaker 5: This season has very similar vibes to twenty eighteen, twenty
- 49:49Speaker 5: twenty three. It's like they're winning games, but it feels
- 49:53Speaker 5: very rocky, and that's just the reality of a post
- 49:55Speaker 5: Super Bowl season. I feel like in Philadelphia, absolutely, and
- 49:58Speaker 5: it's so bizarre.
- 49:59Speaker 1: I have other who are fans of other teams, specifically
- 50:02Speaker 1: like the New York Jets, and they're like, Guys, I
- 50:05Speaker 1: don't want to hear anything from you, you know, I
- 50:07Speaker 1: don't want to hear it. You're eight and three. Yeah,
- 50:09Speaker 1: things may not be clicking on all cylinders, but you're
- 50:12Speaker 1: not an absolute mess and a dumpster fire. But I
- 50:14Speaker 1: think what's important to realize is that US fans, we've
- 50:16Speaker 1: come to expect a certain degree and level of football
- 50:19Speaker 1: being played with this organization because of what the culture
- 50:22Speaker 1: has been over these past few seasons, for sure, But
- 50:25Speaker 1: we got to get into this offense. I mean, that
- 50:27Speaker 1: is the narrative that we are It's the main narrative
- 50:30Speaker 1: that we are hearing from this Philadelphia Eagles I should say,
- 50:34Speaker 1: media market in various ways. Various podcasts have been talking
- 50:38Speaker 1: about it, media personalities too, and rightfully so, this Eagles
- 50:41Speaker 1: offense is inconsistent. They are not very good in many
- 50:44Speaker 1: different ways and I've actually said on social media as
- 50:47Speaker 1: of other folks as well, that it's just not one
- 50:50Speaker 1: thing that is wrong with this offense. It's not there's
- 50:53Speaker 1: not one silver bullet. It's a number of variables, whether
- 50:56Speaker 1: we're talking about the coaching, the play design, player depth.
- 50:59Speaker 1: There's injuries on the offensive line. So lou, let's get
- 51:03Speaker 1: into this conversation about the offense here. Let's got to
- 51:06Speaker 1: get this out of the way because it's been dissected
- 51:09Speaker 1: so much out there, but it's important to talk about it.
- 51:11Speaker 1: What aspects of the offense are most problematic to you
- 51:16Speaker 1: as we're moving towards the end of the regular season,
- 51:18Speaker 1: in this home stretch here, what are your thoughts.
- 51:20Speaker 5: Yeah, like you said, it's not one thing. A lot
- 51:22Speaker 5: of it is just the reality of a season after
- 51:25Speaker 5: a Super Bowl, right when you lose coaches, you lose players.
- 51:29Speaker 5: Teams are giving you their best week in and week out.
- 51:31Speaker 5: They're adjusting to what you did that won you a
- 51:33Speaker 5: championship the previous year. So a lot of that is
- 51:36Speaker 5: just issues that the Kansas City Chiefs have run into
- 51:39Speaker 5: in the past. I think the New England Patriots ran
- 51:41Speaker 5: into in the past. As a consistent contender and a
- 51:44Speaker 5: lot of it are things that the Eagles have always
- 51:46Speaker 5: been inconsistent with on offense, like play calling. It's in
- 51:49Speaker 5: every other year thing, right, when they promote from within,
- 51:52Speaker 5: it doesn't work, and then they bring somebody in from
- 51:54Speaker 5: outside the organization and they make it to a super
- 51:57Speaker 5: Bowl and or win a championship. So that's always been
- 52:00Speaker 5: a reality and that's what they're dealing with this year.
- 52:02Speaker 5: Jalen Hurts in the passing attack, it's always been a
- 52:05Speaker 5: jecky and hide up and down kind of thing where
- 52:08Speaker 5: they have elite moments, especially when it matters most, but
- 52:11Speaker 5: it's not as consistent and volume driven as other passing
- 52:15Speaker 5: attacks throughout the league. So those are all things that
- 52:17Speaker 5: we're kind of used to when I've come to accept
- 52:19Speaker 5: about a Nick Sirianni Jalen Hurtz led organization. Yeah, but
- 52:23Speaker 5: the one big thing that's different this year that's making
- 52:26Speaker 5: them even more inconsistent is that they're one superpower they
- 52:29Speaker 5: could always rely on even when they dealt with these
- 52:31Speaker 5: other issues was the run game, was the offensive line,
- 52:34Speaker 5: and they just do not have it this year. Sae
- 52:37Speaker 5: Quon Barklay has the tenth lowest success rate among running
- 52:40Speaker 5: backs in a single season since twenty twenty this year,
- 52:44Speaker 5: and it's injuries. I think it's just some guys aren't
- 52:48Speaker 5: playing as well as last year. Jordan Maia Loata's been
- 52:50Speaker 5: up and down. Cam Jurgens can't get that back injury
- 52:53Speaker 5: back to one hundred percent. We know Landon Dickerson's been
- 52:56Speaker 5: dealing with multiple injuries all year. Tyler Stein's been fined,
- 53:00Speaker 5: but I think he's a downgrade over who Mkai Beckden
- 53:02Speaker 5: was last year yea as a run blocker. And then
- 53:05Speaker 5: Lane Johnson's kind of had this Jason Peters like year
- 53:07Speaker 5: where he just can't stay healthy and now he's out
- 53:10Speaker 5: for a month. So I think that's the big thing
- 53:13Speaker 5: is they've lost their identity because their identity was the
- 53:16Speaker 5: run game. In the offensive line. Everything plays off that, yes,
- 53:19Speaker 5: including the passing attack. How and Jeff they sorry, I
- 53:22Speaker 5: was just gonna say they don't have the quick passing
- 53:24Speaker 5: scheme to make up for that with easy yards. So
- 53:27Speaker 5: now that's why they're always playing behind the sticks.
- 53:29Speaker 1: There's hardly any three step drops with Jalen Hurts in
- 53:32Speaker 1: terms of getting the ball out quick. You don't see that.
- 53:34Speaker 1: But I was gonna say, how many times have we talked,
- 53:37Speaker 1: Lou if you do not have that solid offensive line,
- 53:39Speaker 1: and like you said, what has been the identity of
- 53:41Speaker 1: this Philadelphia Eagles offense for years and years. If you
- 53:44Speaker 1: do not have a solid offensive line, you're not going
- 53:46Speaker 1: to have a productive run game, You're not going to
- 53:47Speaker 1: be productive in the passing game. It is the foundation
- 53:50Speaker 1: for everything, and they're continuing to struggle this year, and
- 53:53Speaker 1: I just I think fans need to realize I don't
- 53:56Speaker 1: think there's a quote quick fix to this at all.
- 53:59Speaker 5: That's the thing is, I don't think there's a fix
- 54:02Speaker 5: either for twenty twenty five because maybe health, Maybe, just
- 54:06Speaker 5: if Blane Johnson comes back and he looks closer to
- 54:08Speaker 5: one hundred percent because he had some time to recover
- 54:11Speaker 5: from all of these injuries, including the wiz Frank that's
- 54:14Speaker 5: keeping him out, maybe Cam Jurgens does get back to
- 54:17Speaker 5: closer to one hundred percent. But if they keep playing
- 54:20Speaker 5: like probably not right. So, and the thing is, if
- 54:24Speaker 5: that doesn't get back on track, it's going to remain inconsistent.
- 54:27Speaker 5: Because Kevin Patulo, at this point we are eleven games
- 54:30Speaker 5: into the season, I don't think he's gonna get much
- 54:32Speaker 5: better as a play caller. I don't think they're gonna
- 54:34Speaker 5: make a change at that spot either, So that's why
- 54:37Speaker 5: they're gonna be inconsistent because easy yards are not there
- 54:41Speaker 5: for this offense. If the run game's not there, they
- 54:43Speaker 5: don't scheme players open with short and intermedia plays, especially
- 54:47Speaker 5: on first and second down. That's why you're seeing this
- 54:49Speaker 5: team have more three and outs than anybody in football.
- 54:52Speaker 5: And I don't think that will change unless the run
- 54:54Speaker 5: game gets back on.
- 54:55Speaker 1: Tren And that's what kills me. And it's a perfect
- 54:57Speaker 1: segue into the next topic here because the skill old
- 55:00Speaker 1: players are here in this building and they are fantastic players,
- 55:05Speaker 1: AJ Brown, Deavonte Smith, Saquon Barkley, Dallas Goddard, and I
- 55:10Speaker 1: just don't feel like they are being utilized from a
- 55:12Speaker 1: schematic standpoint as they should be. I mean, we're all
- 55:15Speaker 1: getting that vibe, of course, and we all see every
- 55:16Speaker 1: single game we see we have questions and we have
- 55:20Speaker 1: no answers to those questions. I mean, I don't think
- 55:23Speaker 1: we're seeing enough play action. I don't think we're seeing
- 55:26Speaker 1: the amount of rub routes that we saw last year
- 55:28Speaker 1: in Kellen Moore's offense that were very productive at times
- 55:32Speaker 1: with regard to in game decision making, there's only so
- 55:35Speaker 1: much that these skill position players are able to do
- 55:38Speaker 1: when the scheme isn't necessarily beneficial for them in an
- 55:41Speaker 1: overall picture. I mean, am I correct in thinking that,
- 55:44Speaker 1: what are your thoughts here? Yeah? No, for sure.
- 55:46Speaker 5: I mean they even when they do things that scheme
- 55:48Speaker 5: players open. Like I loved how they used aj Brown
- 55:51Speaker 5: in the first half against Dallas. They played him in
- 55:53Speaker 5: the slot more and reduced splits. So you know, a
- 55:56Speaker 5: lot of the times when you just put him on
- 55:57Speaker 5: the boundary, he's at mercy of the side and he
- 56:00Speaker 5: can only get open one way, Whereas when you reduce
- 56:03Speaker 5: the split, when you put him in the slot, now
- 56:05Speaker 5: he's got option routes, like he's got two ways to go.
- 56:07Speaker 5: And he dominated that entire game, including the first half.
- 56:11Speaker 5: They used him on crossers, mesh concepts over the middle
- 56:14Speaker 5: of the field, and then it just goes away. It's
- 56:16Speaker 5: almost like Patulo fields, Like if he continues to use
- 56:18Speaker 5: those kinds of things at work, they're gonna stop working
- 56:21Speaker 5: and he has nothing else to go on, right, So
- 56:23Speaker 5: he's saving these plays for I'm not sure when, but
- 56:26Speaker 5: he needs to start using them now. So, yeah, they
- 56:29Speaker 5: just don't get these guys opportunities to make plays in
- 56:32Speaker 5: the open field, like run after the catchability, Like you
- 56:34Speaker 5: don't see that. The screen game is non existent in
- 56:37Speaker 5: this offense, which is crazy to me considering the weapons
- 56:40Speaker 5: they have. So yeah, it's very personnel dependent, very execution dependent.
- 56:46Speaker 5: That's how the Eagles have kind of been run with
- 56:48Speaker 5: Nick Sirianni and Jalen Hurts. And it's not Hurts his fault.
- 56:50Speaker 5: I think that's more on coaching. But yeah, you're totally right.
- 56:53Speaker 5: They've made the same mistake that they did in twenty
- 56:56Speaker 5: eighteen and twenty twenty three, promoting from within, giving the
- 57:00Speaker 5: he's of an elite offense to a brand new play caller.
- 57:03Speaker 5: And now it's three times under a decade, Jeff, where
- 57:06Speaker 5: this has not worked. I don't know when they're going
- 57:08Speaker 5: to learn their lesson.
- 57:09Speaker 1: Yeah, they better after this season, for sure. But you
- 57:11Speaker 1: mentioned Jalen Hurts, Lou, and I do think at times
- 57:16Speaker 1: at times he does come under fire a little too
- 57:18Speaker 1: much given his accomplishments, giving his lack of turning the
- 57:23Speaker 1: ball over, which is a huge reason why I think
- 57:26Speaker 1: this Eagles team has actually won the amount of games
- 57:29Speaker 1: that they've been able to pull out this year. Frankly,
- 57:31Speaker 1: then again, you know this is the Philly sports market.
- 57:34Speaker 1: We're going to constantly come down on the quarterback. What
- 57:39Speaker 1: is your take on where Jalen Hurts is at this
- 57:41Speaker 1: season and really what he's meant to the team overall.
- 57:45Speaker 5: I think there would be less discourse, less debates about
- 57:47Speaker 5: Jalen Hurts if people would just accept the middle ground
- 57:50Speaker 5: of who he is. Some people think he's a top
- 57:52Speaker 5: three quarterback consistently. I don't believe that. Some people think
- 57:55Speaker 5: he's a bottom tier core like he's not in the
- 57:58Speaker 5: top fifteen, top half of starting quarterbacks. That's not true either.
- 58:02Speaker 5: I think he's a top ten quarterback that's normally top
- 58:05Speaker 5: three or top five in the moments that matter the most.
- 58:08Speaker 5: And that's why they've won a super Bowl with this kid, right. So,
- 58:12Speaker 5: I think if you've, if you've learned to accept that
- 58:14Speaker 5: about Jalen, they're like, what this season has been wouldn't
- 58:18Speaker 5: be all that shocking to you. He's had some incredible
- 58:21Speaker 5: performances Against Minnesota, he had a perfect passer rating, he
- 58:24Speaker 5: dominated the Giants. He's had some great halves against the Buccaneers,
- 58:27Speaker 5: the Broncos, the Cowboys, Right, But then there's been other
- 58:31Speaker 5: times where he can't carry you as a passer if
- 58:34Speaker 5: the run game's not working. That's just who Jalen Hurts is.
- 58:37Speaker 5: I will say there have been too many times this
- 58:40Speaker 5: year where I feel like he's played too conservative, where
- 58:43Speaker 5: he hasn't been as willing to take chances over the
- 58:45Speaker 5: middle of the field, especially tight window throws against zone coverage.
- 58:49Speaker 5: I'd like to see him improve more in that area
- 58:52Speaker 5: the rest of the season. But no, I don't think
- 58:54Speaker 5: he has held this offense back the way some people say.
- 58:57Speaker 5: I think the problem has been much more the offensive
- 59:00Speaker 5: line and the play caller. Yeah, but I think again,
- 59:03Speaker 5: Jalen Hurts because he's had such a strange career where
- 59:06Speaker 5: he's out dueled Patrick Mahomes and won championships and he
- 59:09Speaker 5: has this crazy win percentage. But also there's this other
- 59:12Speaker 5: side of him where at times he's just non existent
- 59:15Speaker 5: in the passing game. Yeah, people don't know where to
- 59:17Speaker 5: put him, and that's why the debates continue to roll on.
- 59:20Speaker 5: Whereas I've kind of just accepted he's a prime Russell
- 59:23Speaker 5: Wilson Cam Newton's style of player, and that's why like
- 59:27Speaker 5: this year hasn't really shocked me all that much.
- 59:29Speaker 1: Yeah, I do wonder the lack of the RPO type
- 59:32Speaker 1: of plays that we have seen this year as well,
- 59:35Speaker 1: because he really excelled in terms of understanding those concepts
- 59:39Speaker 1: and understanding what defenses were doing as he is under center,
- 59:43Speaker 1: and the lack of the RPO this year, I do
- 59:46Speaker 1: wonder how much of that, at least from a hurt standpoint,
- 59:49Speaker 1: has kind of hurt his game. I don't know what
- 59:51Speaker 1: are your thoughts.
- 59:52Speaker 5: I think the lack of running in general for Jalen
- 59:54Speaker 5: has hurt his game, right, I think, yeah, number one,
- 59:57Speaker 5: the rushing attack hasn't worked, so that you know, obviously
- 1:00:02Speaker 5: holds back the RPO game. But they're just not designing
- 1:00:04Speaker 5: plays for Jalen as a runner as much as they
- 1:00:07Speaker 5: have in years past. Maybe that's by design. It probably
- 1:00:09Speaker 5: is to keep him healthy down the stretch. I think
- 1:00:11Speaker 5: Jalen has been a pretty safe scrambler this year, where
- 1:00:15Speaker 5: like he's only taking as many yards as he can
- 1:00:17Speaker 5: get before taking a hit and then he gets down,
- 1:00:20Speaker 5: which is smart. But I do think they need to
- 1:00:22Speaker 5: rev that up a little bit more as the season
- 1:00:24Speaker 5: goes on. In the last two games they have. He's
- 1:00:26Speaker 5: a north south runner and obviously that exposes him to
- 1:00:28Speaker 5: more contact, so you want to be careful there. But
- 1:00:31Speaker 5: it's worked when they've dialed those plays up against the Lions. Again,
- 1:00:35Speaker 5: the Packers, Lions and Cowboys games. Those plays of work,
- 1:00:37Speaker 5: so I want to see more of that moving forward.
- 1:00:39Speaker 5: But yeah, like those those read option plays where he
- 1:00:42Speaker 5: gets out to the boundary, those have not worked because
- 1:00:45Speaker 5: he has not been able to beat ed rushers and
- 1:00:47Speaker 5: defensive tackles to the outside. So if they're going to
- 1:00:50Speaker 5: design these RPO plays for him and design runs, I
- 1:00:54Speaker 5: do want it more north south, but again that comes
- 1:00:57Speaker 5: with more risk of getting injured. So that's why he
- 1:00:59Speaker 5: kind of got to find the balance there.
- 1:01:00Speaker 1: Absolutely, it's a great word balance. And folks, we are
- 1:01:03Speaker 1: going to take a very quick break here. When we
- 1:01:05Speaker 1: get back, we're going to dive into this Eagles defense too.
- 1:01:08Speaker 1: What Vic Fangio has been doing this season, what this
- 1:01:11Speaker 1: defense has not been doing as well. Stick with us.
- 1:01:14Speaker 1: We'll be back in just a bit. All right. We're
- 1:01:17Speaker 1: back with our good friend Lou Diassi from the Locked
- 1:01:20Speaker 1: On Eagles podcast. Always great to dive into this Eagles
- 1:01:24Speaker 1: team with you, buddy, let's dive into now the defense here.
- 1:01:27Speaker 1: Shifting over to the defense, there's you know, there's only
- 1:01:30Speaker 1: so much this defense can do when the offense struggles
- 1:01:33Speaker 1: for long stretches, like we see game after game this
- 1:01:36Speaker 1: past week on the show, and it was probably one
- 1:01:39Speaker 1: of the more tougher defensive outings that we've seen. I
- 1:01:42Speaker 1: ended up calling Vic Fangio Daddy this past week just
- 1:01:45Speaker 1: in the postgame show, just because I feel like he
- 1:01:47Speaker 1: needs to be the quote football adult in the room
- 1:01:51Speaker 1: during during these games. I mean, given the injuries this
- 1:01:54Speaker 1: past week and how poor the offense performed for at
- 1:01:57Speaker 1: least forty minutes, last forty minutes of the game against
- 1:01:59Speaker 1: the cow Boys, I think the defense didn't do a
- 1:02:03Speaker 1: horrendous job. They weren't great by any stretch of the imagination,
- 1:02:07Speaker 1: you know, letting the Cowboys come back scoring twenty four points.
- 1:02:10Speaker 1: What are your thoughts on what the defense has meant
- 1:02:13Speaker 1: to this Eagle season? Here, to this team and you
- 1:02:17Speaker 1: know how they've continued to grow week after week.
- 1:02:20Speaker 5: Without this Eagles defense, they're not eight and three. I mean,
- 1:02:23Speaker 5: it's kind of crazy that there's still the youngest defense
- 1:02:26Speaker 5: from an average age of the starting lineup in the
- 1:02:28Speaker 5: entire NFL. The offense has over two hundred million dollars
- 1:02:32Speaker 5: invested in at almost every player at that position at
- 1:02:35Speaker 5: that on that side of the ball, they're getting like
- 1:02:37Speaker 5: top five money at their position, right, And yet the
- 1:02:41Speaker 5: defense has had to carry that offense, which is that
- 1:02:43Speaker 5: that's where all the prime star tailent is. But yeah,
- 1:02:46Speaker 5: this defense has been the identity of this football team
- 1:02:49Speaker 5: this year and moving forward. If they want to compete
- 1:02:51Speaker 5: for a championship this year, the defense is going to
- 1:02:54Speaker 5: have to carry them. Like again, I think this offense,
- 1:02:57Speaker 5: when they have to have it in the playoff to
- 1:03:00Speaker 5: think you will see them step up. But I don't
- 1:03:03Speaker 5: think week after week that side of the ball is
- 1:03:05Speaker 5: going to carry you, which is very frustrating. But this
- 1:03:08Speaker 5: defense has been absolutely incredible and they're only getting better
- 1:03:11Speaker 5: as the year goes on because Nikobe Dean's been bawling
- 1:03:14Speaker 5: out a linebacker. Like you said, the defensive lineman. Now
- 1:03:17Speaker 5: you have a four man pass rush, you don't need
- 1:03:18Speaker 5: to rely on just blitzing yep. Quinna Mitchell's having an
- 1:03:21Speaker 5: all Pro season. I think a Dori Jackson's even gotten
- 1:03:24Speaker 5: better as the year has gone on. Past few weeks yes, yes, yes,
- 1:03:27Speaker 5: hopefully you know he's gonna miss this game with a concussion,
- 1:03:29Speaker 5: but a Dory moving forward doesn't look like a liability.
- 1:03:32Speaker 5: So yeah, I mean if they want to compete for
- 1:03:34Speaker 5: a championship this year, like we said, don't think the
- 1:03:36Speaker 5: offense is going to get much better this year or
- 1:03:38Speaker 5: much more consistent. It's going to be up to the
- 1:03:40Speaker 5: defense to be the one that is the weekend and
- 1:03:42Speaker 5: week out thing that you can rely on.
- 1:03:44Speaker 1: Yeah, we're seeing this defense grow like we're talking about here,
- 1:03:46Speaker 1: but there still are some weaknesses here. Perhaps it's the
- 1:03:49Speaker 1: depth I'm wondering. You know, when you look at this defense,
- 1:03:53Speaker 1: you know, where's that weakness for you? And what should
- 1:03:56Speaker 1: we be really honing in on as we are in
- 1:03:59Speaker 1: the home stretch here with that defensive weakness, what are
- 1:04:02Speaker 1: your thoughts here?
- 1:04:03Speaker 3: Low?
- 1:04:03Speaker 5: Yeah, now I would still say it's that third cornerback spot,
- 1:04:07Speaker 5: like a Dori Jackson's been better, but he is still
- 1:04:09Speaker 5: the guy that I think if I'm a quarterback on
- 1:04:11Speaker 5: the opposing offense I'm picking on is how can I
- 1:04:13Speaker 5: isolate number eight or Keevy Ringo this week against the
- 1:04:17Speaker 5: Chicago Bears, or if it's Jacory and Bennett, like that's
- 1:04:19Speaker 5: still the weak link of this defense. Outside of that,
- 1:04:22Speaker 5: I would say now that Drew mccuba is dealing with
- 1:04:25Speaker 5: a fractured ankle and might not be back this year,
- 1:04:28Speaker 5: that second safety spot with Sidney Brown, he's kind of
- 1:04:31Speaker 5: a record yer. He's a fun player to watch. He
- 1:04:34Speaker 5: can really lay the lumber. He's got big time hip power,
- 1:04:38Speaker 5: but he can be reckless and at times mistackles. So
- 1:04:41Speaker 5: that'll be something to watch too. I think it's that
- 1:04:43Speaker 5: safety and cornerback spot. Now the Macuba's hurt and Dori
- 1:04:47Speaker 5: Jackson's hurt, it's like our offense is going to try
- 1:04:50Speaker 5: to pick on those two spots. That'll be interesting to watch.
- 1:04:53Speaker 1: Well, Lou before I let you leave, buddy, and then
- 1:04:56Speaker 1: always appreciate you taking the time to jump on here.
- 1:04:59Speaker 1: You know, we talk about confidence a lot on this
- 1:05:01Speaker 1: podcast about various Philly sports teams, whether it's confidence in
- 1:05:05Speaker 1: the Phillies, the Sixers, Flyers, the Union, and now with
- 1:05:08Speaker 1: this Philadelphia Eagles team. Again, this team that is eight
- 1:05:11Speaker 1: and three, they are not, by any stretch a terrible team,
- 1:05:15Speaker 1: a lot of question marks, a lot of frustration with
- 1:05:17Speaker 1: the fan base. As we talked about the offense. But
- 1:05:19Speaker 1: I'm wondering, on a scale of one to ten, zero
- 1:05:21Speaker 1: being no confidence at all, ten being all the confidence
- 1:05:24Speaker 1: of the world, how confident are you in the Eagles
- 1:05:27Speaker 1: being able to really right the ship here this regular season,
- 1:05:31Speaker 1: in the home stretch, with all the challenges we've seen.
- 1:05:34Speaker 1: Where would you rate it between zero and ten? And
- 1:05:37Speaker 1: why so?
- 1:05:38Speaker 5: I would say I'm at like a seven, because the
- 1:05:41Speaker 5: thing is they're eight and three. They've beaten pretty much
- 1:05:44Speaker 5: every good NFC. They've beaten every top tier NFC contender
- 1:05:47Speaker 5: that they've had to play this year. So when you
- 1:05:51Speaker 5: put that in perspective, like, although I don't think a
- 1:05:53Speaker 5: lot of these things, especially on offense, are going to
- 1:05:55Speaker 5: get better, even if it doesn't, this team is shown
- 1:05:59Speaker 5: this year they are still capable of beating every team
- 1:06:02Speaker 5: in the conference you might need to beat to get
- 1:06:04Speaker 5: back to the super Bowl. So I think there's a
- 1:06:06Speaker 5: middle ground between. I don't think they're ever going to
- 1:06:08Speaker 5: get back to this year the dominant offensive play of
- 1:06:11Speaker 5: twenty twenty four or like twenty twenty two, But I
- 1:06:14Speaker 5: don't think a twenty twenty three like collapse is coming either.
- 1:06:17Speaker 5: I think they're going to compete for a Super Bowl. Now,
- 1:06:20Speaker 5: could you make the argument the Rams might be the
- 1:06:22Speaker 5: favorite now in this conference, I would listen to that. Yeah,
- 1:06:25Speaker 5: But the Eagles to me are still a top three
- 1:06:27Speaker 5: team in the NFC. They have the most experienced when
- 1:06:30Speaker 5: it comes to playing in the playoffs, playing for championships,
- 1:06:33Speaker 5: and ultimately, when you have that and you have this
- 1:06:36Speaker 5: defense playing the way they are, you're still gonna have
- 1:06:38Speaker 5: a chance to win a title. And that's why I'm
- 1:06:40Speaker 5: at a seven because I don't think everything's going to
- 1:06:42Speaker 5: improve the rest of the way, but it might not
- 1:06:45Speaker 5: have to for them to still have a chance. So
- 1:06:46Speaker 5: I'm kind of in the middle.
- 1:06:47Speaker 1: I don't think everything is employed. I don't think anything
- 1:06:50Speaker 1: is necessarily imploding. That's the thing. It's like, do we
- 1:06:53Speaker 1: see it getting better necessarily from an offensive standpoint, Not necessarily.
- 1:06:57Speaker 1: But that doesn't mean things are going to completely implode.
- 1:07:00Speaker 5: And they're just gotta hope that because, like Jeff, there's
- 1:07:03Speaker 5: been some huge moments this year, Like there's been a
- 1:07:05Speaker 5: lot of low lows, but there's been high highs as well.
- 1:07:08Speaker 5: You just got a bank on this experienced offense that's
- 1:07:11Speaker 5: won a championship having their high moments when it matters
- 1:07:15Speaker 5: most in the platoff, So that's what you just got
- 1:07:17Speaker 5: to bank on and we'll see time will tell.
