- 0:34SPEAKER_01: Thank you.
- 0:35SPEAKER_01: Welcome to the O'Brien and Doug podcast.
- 0:37SPEAKER_01: Welcome to be here.
- 0:39SPEAKER_01: I'm I'm O'Brien.
- 0:40SPEAKER_01: I'm Doug.
- 0:41SPEAKER_01: It is uh episode 219.
- 0:44SPEAKER_01: 20.
- 0:47SPEAKER_01: We are recording this on election day.
- 0:49SPEAKER_09: So get out and vote, you lazy bumps.
- 0:52SPEAKER_01: But we are not gonna talk about the election.
- 0:54SPEAKER_09: That's all we're gonna talk about.
- 0:56SPEAKER_01: That's all we're gonna talk about?
- 0:57SPEAKER_09: Yeah.
- 0:57SPEAKER_01: Is the election?
- 0:58SPEAKER_09: No.
- 0:58SPEAKER_09: That's all we're gonna talk about the election.
- 0:59SPEAKER_01: Oh, I I did want to say, I will say this though.
- 1:02SPEAKER_01: Uh, because, you know, we were like, what are you gonna talk about?
- 1:04SPEAKER_01: Well, I don't know, we'll talk about something, but I'm looking at ultimate classicrock.com.
- 1:09SPEAKER_01: It's all, you know, um rockers and presidents, and you know, all you know, get out the vote and rockers endorse this, you know, that type of thing, and it's like, I don't care.
- 1:23SPEAKER_01: Boring.
- 1:25SPEAKER_01: I don't care.
- 1:27SPEAKER_01: You know, i i uh that doesn't help.
- 1:29SPEAKER_01: I don't think it helps.
- 1:31SPEAKER_01: Well, to the low the low um information voter, maybe.
- 1:36SPEAKER_09: Well, they're you're they're gonna vote for whoever they tell them to.
- 1:39SPEAKER_09: Right.
- 1:39SPEAKER_09: Because they don't know any better.
- 1:41SPEAKER_01: Right, exactly.
- 1:42SPEAKER_01: So uh but anyway, that's all that was on Ultimate Cloud.
- 1:45SPEAKER_01: I found one story that we'll do here in a second, and I think it'll lead us to uh it'll be a jumping off point to something else we can talk about.
- 1:52SPEAKER_01: But okay.
- 1:53SPEAKER_01: Uh I will say this, because uh we weren't gonna talk about the election, but I waited in line for an hour and a half today to vote.
- 1:59SPEAKER_09: Yeah, I had to wait in line too, and that that's very unusual.
- 2:01SPEAKER_01: Very unusual.
- 2:02SPEAKER_01: And everybody in line with us, I was with my wife, and uh everybody says I've never in my lifetime I've never seen it like this before.
- 2:12SPEAKER_08: Yeah.
- 2:12SPEAKER_01: It was it was unreal, it was madness.
- 2:15SPEAKER_01: It was out the door.
- 2:16SPEAKER_08: Yeah, well yeah, I believe that.
- 2:17SPEAKER_08: Yeah.
- 2:18SPEAKER_01: It was crazy.
- 2:19SPEAKER_01: So so I don't know what that what that means.
- 2:21SPEAKER_01: Um obviously it means that people are doing their civic duty.
- 2:24SPEAKER_01: People fired up.
- 2:25SPEAKER_01: Yeah, but they are obviously fired it up fired up.
- 2:27SPEAKER_01: It's funny because I said, I said uh somebody I was talking to online, I said, you know why there's this many people, right?
- 2:33SPEAKER_01: And they're like, no, why?
- 2:35SPEAKER_01: And I said, because they want to keep the old main flag.
- 2:39SPEAKER_09: Yeah, I bet that's that's probably why they're we don't want no stupid pine tree flag.
- 2:44SPEAKER_09: That's what it that's what brought everybody out.
- 2:45SPEAKER_09: Yeah, they're all who?
- 2:48SPEAKER_09: Who's running for president?
- 2:49SPEAKER_09: Who cares?
- 2:50SPEAKER_01: Give me the blue flag.
- 2:51SPEAKER_09: I want a blue flag.
- 2:53SPEAKER_01: You jerks! Yeah, yeah.
- 2:55SPEAKER_01: So so um but yes, hopefully you got out and vote.
- 2:59SPEAKER_09: Yeah, the old flag looks like a six-year-old did it in our class.
- 3:03SPEAKER_09: I just don't know.
- 3:04SPEAKER_01: Yeah, let's go back to that.
- 3:05SPEAKER_01: Yeah, okay.
- 3:06SPEAKER_01: And and you know the one of the reasons they gave for going back to it?
- 3:09SPEAKER_01: Oh, who knows?
- 3:10SPEAKER_01: Well, I mean, one of the reasons was because the old flag doesn't represent um Maine as a diverse state because it's two white guys on it.
- 3:22SPEAKER_09: So?
- 3:22SPEAKER_01: Exactly.
- 3:23SPEAKER_01: They're like there's a moose on there too.
- 3:25SPEAKER_01: Aren't they minute men or something like that?
- 3:27SPEAKER_09: No, one's a farmer, one's a sailor or something.
- 3:29SPEAKER_09: Okay, well, I mean, still.
- 3:30SPEAKER_09: Yeah.
- 3:31SPEAKER_09: It's it's historical.
- 3:33SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 3:34SPEAKER_01: You know?
- 3:34SPEAKER_01: I I d I I don't.
- 3:36SPEAKER_01: Whatever.
- 3:36SPEAKER_01: There was nothing wrong with that.
- 3:39SPEAKER_01: We don't we don't want to be left off the flag.
- 3:41SPEAKER_01: There's there's no there was nothing wrong with our flag.
- 3:44SPEAKER_01: I don't know why it's a big thing.
- 3:45SPEAKER_01: No, somebody got it up their yeah.
- 3:47SPEAKER_01: Up their butt.
- 3:47SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 3:48SPEAKER_01: But that's all we'll say about that.
- 3:50SPEAKER_01: So done.
- 3:50SPEAKER_01: But that's I that's next story.
- 3:52SPEAKER_01: That's why I think that um a lot of people came out today was to vote for the flag.
- 3:56SPEAKER_01: That's good.
- 3:57SPEAKER_01: Guaranteed.
- 3:58SPEAKER_01: Um so yeah, hopefully you got out and voted.
- 4:02SPEAKER_01: And if you didn't if you didn't, you're a garbage human being.
- 4:06SPEAKER_09: You can't complain.
- 4:07SPEAKER_09: Garbage.
- 4:08SPEAKER_09: Garbage.
- 4:09SPEAKER_09: You are garbage.
- 4:11SPEAKER_01: Yes.
- 4:12SPEAKER_01: Um So here's my here's my story that leads to my jumping off point.
- 4:18SPEAKER_01: Can I can I start that now, or do you have anything else you want to talk about?
- 4:22SPEAKER_09: Let me think about it.
- 4:26SPEAKER_01: No, I ain't got nothing.
- 4:28SPEAKER_01: Alright, so you'll dig this.
- 4:29SPEAKER_01: Sure I will.
- 4:30SPEAKER_01: We actually had a conversation about this not too long ago.
- 4:32SPEAKER_01: Okay.
- 4:33SPEAKER_01: David Foster understands now that he effed up Chicago.
- 4:37SPEAKER_09: Well, it's about time, Dave.
- 4:40SPEAKER_01: Didn't we have this discussion like like last week or something?
- 4:43SPEAKER_09: Yeah, I think we were talking about it at uh.
- 4:46SPEAKER_01: But yeah, that's what it was.
- 4:47SPEAKER_09: Yes.
- 4:48SPEAKER_09: Because I think Chicago came on over the That's what it was.
- 4:51SPEAKER_09: Yeah.
- 4:51SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 4:52SPEAKER_09: And we We were all like, ah, it's a good song, but David David Foster whossified it.
- 4:58SPEAKER_09: That's what it was.
- 4:58SPEAKER_09: Hard habit to break.
- 4:59SPEAKER_01: And I and I made the comment, I think it's weird to have two different guys singing about the same girl.
- 5:04SPEAKER_09: Yeah.
- 5:04SPEAKER_09: You know, uh it'd been really funny if you're like, hey, who are you singing about?
- 5:07SPEAKER_09: Jill?
- 5:08SPEAKER_09: I was singing about Jill.
- 5:11SPEAKER_01: She's a hard habit to break.
- 5:13SPEAKER_09: The fragment.
- 5:14SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 5:15SPEAKER_01: So um we established that Chicago changed, right?
- 5:20SPEAKER_01: From the from the the jazzy, jazz rock 70s.
- 5:24SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 5:25SPEAKER_01: Uh David Foster came in for I think Chicago 16 was the first one.
- 5:29SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 5:29SPEAKER_01: Yep.
- 5:30SPEAKER_01: And kind of just changed things for the band.
- 5:34SPEAKER_01: And although I love the stuff that Foster did with them, the Chicago 16, 17, and 18, I love that stuff.
- 5:42SPEAKER_01: Because for nostalgic purposes.
- 5:44SPEAKER_09: Well, yeah, that's that's how we came to know Chicago.
- 5:46SPEAKER_01: Right.
- 5:46SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 5:47SPEAKER_01: Um but even Chicago hates that stuff.
- 5:51SPEAKER_01: I mean, I I think they appeared.
- 5:52SPEAKER_09: Well, especially the horn section, because he kind of like shunned them.
- 5:55SPEAKER_09: There was the hornless ears.
- 5:56SPEAKER_09: Yeah.
- 5:57SPEAKER_01: So it was more uh let's put Peter Sotera out there and uh And did you know that for 1617 16 and 17 uh Peter Satara didn't even play bass?
- 6:12SPEAKER_09: Oh yeah, he didn't want to play yeah, it's he didn't want to play anything.
- 6:14SPEAKER_09: He didn't want to play anymore.
- 6:15SPEAKER_09: Yeah.
- 6:15SPEAKER_09: He was just like, you do it.
- 6:16SPEAKER_01: I'm like okay.
- 6:18SPEAKER_01: So he played synth bass.
- 6:19SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 6:20SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 6:20SPEAKER_01: So and he played like the piano on it too, when you had like Robert Lamb, a great piano player.
- 6:25SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 6:26SPEAKER_01: And he co-wrote the songs too.
- 6:28SPEAKER_01: So so this is what the article says.
- 6:29SPEAKER_01: It says Um Peter Sotera was just one of their vocalists rather than the Honey Sweet Ballad singing front man.
- 6:35SPEAKER_01: He actually played bass.
- 6:37SPEAKER_01: Um Foster Changed, all of that with 1982's Chicago 16.
- 6:44SPEAKER_01: Um he says, I get it.
- 6:46SPEAKER_01: I get why they were unhappy.
- 6:47SPEAKER_01: I just came in like a young, arrogant barnstormer.
- 6:50SPEAKER_01: Okay, I'm playing all the piano now, and Peter let me play the synth bass on everything because he didn't want to play bass anymore.
- 6:55SPEAKER_01: So suddenly Chicago's new producer was also the bass player, the piano player, the co-songwriter, the producer, the arranger for the most part.
- 7:02SPEAKER_01: I didn't know then that I was making them more like me, then I was trying to be like them.
- 7:08SPEAKER_01: And I mean they obviously that was their biggest, those were their biggest money-making years.
- 7:14SPEAKER_09: Oh yeah, everybody everybody was all about Chicago.
- 7:16SPEAKER_01: All about Chicago.
- 7:17SPEAKER_01: The first But it was it was so poppy.
- 7:19SPEAKER_01: It was so poppy.
- 7:20SPEAKER_01: Well, I mean, here's here's from Chicago 16.
- 7:22SPEAKER_01: Uh, you remember this one.
- 7:28SPEAKER_01: Hard to say, I'm sorry.
- 7:29SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 7:30SPEAKER_01: Yeah, it goes into a I don't think it does on the video though.
- 7:33SPEAKER_01: No, because this is three minutes and 40 seconds.
- 7:35SPEAKER_01: Oh, okay, so it doesn't go into the second part.
- 7:37SPEAKER_01: The second part is awesome.
- 7:38SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 7:39SPEAKER_01: With horns.
- 7:40SPEAKER_01: It's actually kind of rocks.
- 7:41SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 7:41SPEAKER_01: I wonder if I can find that because people don't they don't play that on the radio.
- 7:45SPEAKER_01: Everybody needs a little they always cut the song off.
- 7:48SPEAKER_11: Playing bass.
- 7:53SPEAKER_11: I don't wanna play the bass.
- 7:58SPEAKER_11: Cause my name is Peter Satara.
- 8:05SPEAKER_11: This is my band now, you walk it.
- 8:08SPEAKER_11: Stop my dot.
- 8:11SPEAKER_11: It's a PG.
- 8:13SPEAKER_01: PG.
- 8:13SPEAKER_01: Keep it PG.
- 8:15SPEAKER_11: Bass!
- 8:16SPEAKER_09: Don't want to play bass.
- 8:17SPEAKER_09: Oh, he's playing bass on there.
- 8:19SPEAKER_09: No, he's not, he's just holding it.
- 8:21SPEAKER_01: That's true.
- 8:21SPEAKER_01: Like almost presently.
- 8:23SPEAKER_01: But there's a bass.
- 8:23SPEAKER_01: It's a tenth bass.
- 8:25SPEAKER_09: Oh, wait a second.
- 8:26SPEAKER_09: Was that David Foster?
- 8:28SPEAKER_09: Or playing the piano?
- 8:29SPEAKER_01: No, it's not.
- 8:30SPEAKER_01: Never mind.
- 8:30SPEAKER_09: Isn't that uh Bill Chaplin?
- 8:33SPEAKER_01: It is.
- 8:34SPEAKER_01: Bill Chaplin, yep.
- 8:37SPEAKER_01: They look so unhappy.
- 8:38SPEAKER_01: They're all like that.
- 8:40SPEAKER_01: That's blowing.
- 8:41SPEAKER_01: I'm just gonna stand here with my hands in my pockets and sing.
- 8:45SPEAKER_09: Kind of reminds me of the Hard Havoc to Break video.
- 8:49SPEAKER_09: Rather Brazy do the same thing.
- 8:51SPEAKER_09: Yeah.
- 8:51SPEAKER_09: Oh, look at Robert Lamb.
- 8:53SPEAKER_09: He's high.
- 8:55SPEAKER_01: Or drawn quite.
- 8:59SPEAKER_01: I mean, it's a great song.
- 9:00SPEAKER_01: Let me let me go to this here because we don't ever get, they always cut off the end.
- 9:07SPEAKER_01: So let's do this.
- 9:09SPEAKER_01: Okay, so this is the end of Hard and Stampsor.
- 9:16SPEAKER_01: There's a great piece of music at the end of this.
- 11:32SPEAKER_09: Yeah, I think that I think that was from a movie if I remember right.
- 11:35SPEAKER_01: Well, it's called Getaway.
- 11:37SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 11:37SPEAKER_01: It's tied to that song.
- 11:38SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 11:38SPEAKER_01: Hard to say I'm sorry, Slow.
- 11:40SPEAKER_09: But I think it they wrote it for a movie.
- 11:41SPEAKER_09: For a movie soundtrack.
- 11:42SPEAKER_09: Yeah.
- 11:43SPEAKER_09: Because like the love part was like, you know, the guy finds the girl at the end like that.
- 11:48SPEAKER_01: Right.
- 11:48SPEAKER_09: And then like at the end, it's like this like other scene completely, and that's why it changes.
- 11:53SPEAKER_01: Oh, I didn't know that.
- 11:54SPEAKER_09: Yeah, it's I don't know.
- 11:55SPEAKER_09: It's it's a little weird.
- 11:57SPEAKER_09: Yeah.
- 11:57SPEAKER_09: You know.
- 11:57SPEAKER_01: Yeah, but I mean I would have, like I said, I would have, I would have uh liked to have like a full version of that.
- 12:03SPEAKER_09: That's yeah, that that song's you know, the end part is great.
- 12:06SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 12:07SPEAKER_01: Um, so to get back to the story here, so uh Chicago 16 became a platinum-selling top ten smash.
- 12:13SPEAKER_01: Um, their first since 77's Chicago 11.
- 12:17SPEAKER_01: Uh, and then Chicago 17 was even bigger than that.
- 12:20SPEAKER_01: That's hard have it to break, you're the inspiration, stay the night, reached top five.
- 12:25SPEAKER_01: Uh and then even when Satara left, of course he uh foster worked with Sotera on his solo albums, right?
- 12:33SPEAKER_01: Glory of Love from uh Karate Kid.
- 12:35SPEAKER_01: And then um Foster kept working with Chicago for Chicago 18, which had Jason Sheff, Peter Sotera's replacement, on lead vocals.
- 12:45SPEAKER_01: Um, and then he took off and he says, I don't blame them for being peed off.
- 12:50SPEAKER_01: I was trying to imitate them, but I guess more of me came out than should have, and they got annoyed because they didn't want to be a ballad band.
- 12:57SPEAKER_01: I mean, my mission with Chicago was I wanted to remind them of their greatness.
- 13:00SPEAKER_01: I was such a fan in the late 60s when it was the Chicago Transit Authority, but by Chicago 16 they'd just forgotten their greatness.
- 13:06SPEAKER_01: That's all.
- 13:07SPEAKER_01: Bottom line is I don't blame them for being ticked off.
- 13:10SPEAKER_01: Um they had a ton of success for before, they were so revered, they were critic starlings for the most part.
- 13:15SPEAKER_01: I effed that up, according to David Foster.
- 13:19SPEAKER_01: So he agrees.
- 13:20SPEAKER_01: No argument here.
- 13:21SPEAKER_01: He agrees completely.
- 13:23SPEAKER_01: Um and then he so he left after 18, but they did Chicago 19, which was along the same lines.
- 13:29SPEAKER_01: There were more horns, I think.
- 13:31SPEAKER_09: Yeah, well, I think they were just like, well, it's been working, let's not tinker with it.
- 13:36SPEAKER_09: Yeah.
- 13:37SPEAKER_09: And then we gotta put kids through college and then 21 was kind of the same way.
- 13:41SPEAKER_09: Yeah.
- 13:42SPEAKER_01: And then after that they made like their swing album, and they went back to like kind of like the old Chicago, but not really actually.
- 13:48SPEAKER_09: Not really, no.
- 13:49SPEAKER_09: I don't think they they've never gone back.
- 13:51SPEAKER_09: No, no.
- 13:52SPEAKER_09: Well, but they changed after Terry Kath died anyway.
- 13:55SPEAKER_01: Oh, of course.
- 13:55SPEAKER_01: So and but uh today they kind of have to live in both worlds, you know, the pop world and their old Right.
- 14:03SPEAKER_01: Their old uh style, I guess.
- 14:05SPEAKER_01: But of course they're playing, they're not they're not making any new music now.
- 14:08SPEAKER_09: They're just touring and now they had an album out not too long ago.
- 14:12SPEAKER_01: Yeah, but it was like uh greatest hits, wasn't it?
- 14:14SPEAKER_09: No, there was a new album.
- 14:15SPEAKER_09: A new album from Chicago?
- 14:17SPEAKER_09: Yeah.
- 14:18SPEAKER_09: Just came out like a year or two ago.
- 14:20SPEAKER_01: A year or two ago.
- 14:22SPEAKER_10: I have to find out.
- 14:26SPEAKER_11: Prove you wrong.
- 14:28SPEAKER_01: Not prove you wrong, but I'm curious.
- 14:30SPEAKER_01: No, you want to prove me wrong.
- 14:31SPEAKER_01: Well, partly.
- 14:33SPEAKER_01: Uh let's see.
- 14:34SPEAKER_01: I know I'm right.
- 14:37SPEAKER_01: Like a year or two ago, you said?
- 14:39SPEAKER_01: Yeah, like the last couple years.
- 14:41SPEAKER_01: Let's see.
- 14:43SPEAKER_01: I'm looking for discography.
- 14:46SPEAKER_01: Look at all the mentoring musicians.
- 14:48SPEAKER_01: Alright, so studio albums.
- 14:51SPEAKER_01: Uh Chicago.
- 14:54SPEAKER_01: Let's see.
- 14:56SPEAKER_01: Born for this moment.
- 14:58SPEAKER_01: Yeah, that's the one.
- 14:59SPEAKER_01: 2022.
- 15:01SPEAKER_01: Interesting.
- 15:02SPEAKER_01: Told you.
- 15:03SPEAKER_01: Yes, you did.
- 15:04SPEAKER_09: You're stupid.
- 15:06SPEAKER_09: Uh, yep, I am.
- 15:10SPEAKER_01: I'm smart, you're not.
- 15:12SPEAKER_01: I'm smart, you're not.
- 15:15SPEAKER_01: Wow, and there's 14 songs on it, and they're all new songs.
- 15:18SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 15:19SPEAKER_01: Wow.
- 15:20SPEAKER_09: Yeah, I know.
- 15:21SPEAKER_09: I downloaded it.
- 15:22SPEAKER_09: I like it.
- 15:22SPEAKER_09: It's good for them.
- 15:23SPEAKER_09: Yeah.
- 15:24SPEAKER_01: And so it's good.
- 15:25SPEAKER_09: Yeah.
- 15:25SPEAKER_09: Oh, that's good.
- 15:26SPEAKER_09: I mean, it's not it's not it's not amazing.
- 15:28SPEAKER_09: It's not like, wow! But it's good.
- 15:30SPEAKER_09: It's good Chicago music, right?
- 15:32SPEAKER_01: Very cool.
- 15:33SPEAKER_01: I liked it.
- 15:34SPEAKER_01: I I never knew.
- 15:35SPEAKER_01: I thought the last thing that they put out, of course, they put out one in 2014, which I did know about, uh called Now.
- 15:44SPEAKER_01: In 2013, they put out the Nashville sessions.
- 15:46SPEAKER_01: Um 2019 they put out a Christmas album.
- 15:50SPEAKER_09: Yeah, they do that quite a bit.
- 15:52SPEAKER_01: Uh, and then what another Christmas album in 2011.
- 15:55SPEAKER_01: Um Chicago 30 in 2006.
- 15:59SPEAKER_01: So I guess they've been they've been putting stuff out uh right along.
- 16:03SPEAKER_01: Uh so that's cool.
- 16:04SPEAKER_01: That's cool.
- 16:05SPEAKER_01: I did not know that.
- 16:06SPEAKER_01: I'm happy about that.
- 16:08SPEAKER_01: That there's that they're still going.
- 16:09SPEAKER_01: But when they play their concerts, it's like any heritage act.
- 16:13SPEAKER_09: Well, yeah, yeah.
- 16:13SPEAKER_09: I mean you're you're gonna you gotta play the you gotta play the hits.
- 16:15SPEAKER_01: Yeah, you gotta play the hits.
- 16:16SPEAKER_01: Yeah, you gotta play the hits.
- 16:17SPEAKER_01: And the cult favorites, you know, that that's a bit.
- 16:20SPEAKER_01: Um so this this I was gonna say let led to a jumping off point for us to talk about.
- 16:27SPEAKER_01: So our David Foster is a butthead.
- 16:30SPEAKER_01: No, we already established that.
- 16:31SPEAKER_01: Oh.
- 16:31SPEAKER_01: Uh I read his uh autobiography, by the way.
- 16:33SPEAKER_01: Did you did you read that?
- 16:34SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 16:35SPEAKER_01: Did you read it for me?
- 16:36SPEAKER_01: Did I lend it to you?
- 16:37SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 16:37SPEAKER_01: Okay, that's what I thought.
- 16:38SPEAKER_01: Is that one of my books that you're holding hostage?
- 16:39SPEAKER_01: Okay.
- 16:40SPEAKER_01: You'll see it back someday.
- 16:42SPEAKER_09: It's quite happy right now.
- 16:44SPEAKER_01: I'm taking good care of it.
- 16:45SPEAKER_01: Um so are there bands that changed and you lost interest.
- 16:59SPEAKER_01: So Chicago, so Chicago, we we well Chicago's a weird um not necessarily a a great example because we got to know, like you said, got to know Chicago.
- 17:11SPEAKER_09: Well, we didn't know Chicago before 17.
- 17:14SPEAKER_01: Right.
- 17:15SPEAKER_01: But but we can still look at it from an outside perspective.
- 17:18SPEAKER_01: So Chicago 17 is kind of when we got turned on to Chicago.
- 17:21SPEAKER_01: So we knew that type of music, but then we dug deeper.
- 17:24SPEAKER_08: Yeah.
- 17:25SPEAKER_01: And we got the Terry Kathy ears.
- 17:28SPEAKER_01: Right.
- 17:29SPEAKER_01: Okay.
- 17:29SPEAKER_01: Um, and arguably like that better than the 17 Well, it was more, I don't know if I like it better, but it's more pure.
- 17:39SPEAKER_01: Okay.
- 17:40SPEAKER_09: You know, more what they more what they set out to do.
- 17:43SPEAKER_01: Okay, so they changed.
- 17:44SPEAKER_09: Yeah.
- 17:45SPEAKER_09: So they became more of a commercial.
- 17:48SPEAKER_01: Okay.
- 17:48SPEAKER_01: So are there bands that you started listening to and loved them or like them a lot, and then they changed direction or just something about the band changed, and you were like, I'm not having it anymore.
- 18:03SPEAKER_01: Dave Matthews.
- 18:04SPEAKER_01: Dave Matthews.
- 18:05SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 18:06SPEAKER_01: I don't disagree with that.
- 18:07SPEAKER_01: That's a good example because Under the Table and Dreaming was awesome.
- 18:10SPEAKER_09: That's a great album.
- 18:11SPEAKER_01: Great album.
- 18:12SPEAKER_09: Even uh the second one, Crash.
- 18:13SPEAKER_01: Yep.
- 18:14SPEAKER_01: Yeah, that's a good one.
- 18:14SPEAKER_09: That was a pretty good album.
- 18:15SPEAKER_09: Then after that, it was just like it's more of the same.
- 18:18SPEAKER_09: Yeah.
- 18:18SPEAKER_01: Yeah, it was just it was just kind of like eh.
- 18:20SPEAKER_09: Yeah.
- 18:21SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 18:22SPEAKER_09: That's a good example.
- 18:23SPEAKER_09: Yeah, I like that.
- 18:24SPEAKER_09: Um I got one.
- 18:26SPEAKER_09: Okay, go.
- 18:26SPEAKER_09: Bon Jovi.
- 18:28SPEAKER_09: Oh yeah.
- 18:28SPEAKER_01: After they got rid of uh And it's not necessarily after they got rid of Richie because there were some things that Richie did with them that I didn't I didn't like.
- 18:34SPEAKER_01: Right.
- 18:35SPEAKER_01: Um I think it was after like we've already said it, after Crush.
- 18:38SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 18:39SPEAKER_01: You know, after Crush.
- 18:41SPEAKER_01: Yeah, being the same.
- 18:43SPEAKER_01: Yeah, okay, I'm done.
- 18:44SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 18:44SPEAKER_01: You know, I mean, not that any of it was bad for per se.
- 18:47SPEAKER_01: Right.
- 18:48SPEAKER_01: But uh, you know, I kind of lost.
- 18:51SPEAKER_01: But I and I was, I don't know if you were, I was a huge Bon Jovi fan.
- 18:54SPEAKER_01: You were more of a Bon Jovi fan than I was.
- 18:56SPEAKER_01: Yeah, yeah.
- 18:57SPEAKER_01: Yeah, so and and so then when they started changing, like after Crush, and they did, they got more um Well they got more cookie cutter.
- 19:05SPEAKER_09: It was just like, you know, let's let's you know, this, this, this, this.
- 19:09SPEAKER_09: Okay, put it out.
- 19:09SPEAKER_09: Yeah.
- 19:10SPEAKER_09: This, this, this, this, put it out.
- 19:11SPEAKER_01: Right, you know.
- 19:12SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 19:12SPEAKER_01: And it was, it was also the content changed.
- 19:15SPEAKER_01: I mean, they started singing about, you know, they've always sung about people.
- 19:20SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 19:21SPEAKER_01: You know, like it's like they started with living on a prayer, you know, slippery.
- 19:26SPEAKER_01: And they realized that that's what resonates.
- 19:30SPEAKER_01: But then they started being like socially conscious and things like that.
- 19:33SPEAKER_01: And I'm saying that's a bad thing, but it wasn't the Bon Jovi that I liked that I knew.
- 19:38SPEAKER_01: Right.
- 19:38SPEAKER_01: You know?
- 19:39SPEAKER_01: So, yeah.
- 19:41SPEAKER_01: Who else?
- 19:42SPEAKER_09: Well, that's how I got I got turned off of Bruce Springsteen.
- 19:45SPEAKER_09: Because I like early Bruce Springsteen right up through to the 80s.
- 19:48SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 19:49SPEAKER_09: And uh that album he did after 9-11.
- 19:52SPEAKER_01: See now I The Rising?
- 19:53SPEAKER_01: The Rising, yeah.
- 19:53SPEAKER_01: See, now I like that album.
- 19:54SPEAKER_09: Oh, I I love it too, but after that I was just like, Yes, done.
- 19:58SPEAKER_01: Yes.
- 19:58SPEAKER_01: Yeah, yeah, yeah.
- 19:59SPEAKER_01: I liked uh um the one with Brilliant Disguise on it.
- 20:03SPEAKER_09: Yeah, I don't remember what it was.
- 20:04SPEAKER_01: It was Afterborn on the USA.
- 20:05SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 20:06SPEAKER_01: Great album.
- 20:07SPEAKER_01: Can't remember the name of it.
- 20:08SPEAKER_01: Maybe it was Brilliant Disguise.
- 20:09SPEAKER_01: I don't think it was Brilliant Disguise.
- 20:10SPEAKER_01: And oh Tunnel of Love.
- 20:12SPEAKER_01: Tunnel of Love is what it was called.
- 20:13SPEAKER_01: Oh okay.
- 20:14SPEAKER_01: Great album.
- 20:15SPEAKER_01: Um he put out a couple albums in like 91 at the same year.
- 20:20SPEAKER_01: Human Touch and something else.
- 20:24SPEAKER_01: No E Street Band.
- 20:26SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 20:26SPEAKER_01: He played all the instruments.
- 20:27SPEAKER_01: It was they were good, they were decent.
- 20:29SPEAKER_01: But yeah, The Rising, after the Rising, he just kind of went.
- 20:34SPEAKER_09: Yeah, he just kind of disrupt it, just it just wasn't, it didn't have that fire anymore.
- 20:39SPEAKER_09: It was just like, yeah, this is now is just bad.
- 20:42SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 20:42SPEAKER_01: You know.
- 20:43SPEAKER_01: Yeah, I'm with that.
- 20:44SPEAKER_01: Yeah, I agree with that.
- 20:45SPEAKER_01: Um what about bands that like completely changed?
- 20:51SPEAKER_01: Um Well, see, this is a bad example too, because I don't know that I I was gonna say Genesis because I wasn't in I wasn't into I wasn't into early Genesis.
- 21:03SPEAKER_09: Progressive Genesis.
- 21:04SPEAKER_09: Peter Gabriel Genesis.
- 21:05SPEAKER_09: Right.
- 21:06SPEAKER_09: No, I wasn't I like the 80s Genesis with you know which is what we grew up on.
- 21:11SPEAKER_09: Yeah, you know, and those guys.
- 21:13SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 21:13SPEAKER_01: But think of it from uh a Genesis fan's perspective, like the early Genesis fan, progressive rock, right?
- 21:24SPEAKER_01: Progressive rock.
- 21:26SPEAKER_01: So they completely changed like a complete overhaul.
- 21:31SPEAKER_01: And then there were three, right?
- 21:32SPEAKER_01: Mike Rutherford, Tony Banks, uh, Phil Collins.
- 21:35SPEAKER_01: And they made straight up pop music.
- 21:38SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 21:39SPEAKER_01: Um so although some fans were disappointed in the 70s, like I said, I think I think millions and millions of fans disagreed.
- 21:48SPEAKER_09: Um I think it got better.
- 21:51SPEAKER_01: You think it got better?
- 21:52SPEAKER_09: Yeah.
- 21:53SPEAKER_09: It was more it was more focused.
- 21:55SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 21:56SPEAKER_09: You know what I mean?
- 21:56SPEAKER_09: Before you the Peter Gabriel years, it was more theatrical.
- 22:00SPEAKER_09: And more, you know, Prague.
- 22:03SPEAKER_09: You know, with Peter Gabriel.
- 22:05SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 22:05SPEAKER_09: But I mean, you know, but you take Peter Gabriel by himself, he's pretty great.
- 22:09SPEAKER_09: Well, I was gonna I was gonna say that.
- 22:11SPEAKER_09: So which is weird.
- 22:12SPEAKER_01: Yeah, because he was well, it's a good word.
- 22:15SPEAKER_01: He was weird in Genesis.
- 22:16SPEAKER_01: Yeah, and he still is to like to a certain extent.
- 22:19SPEAKER_01: But I mean, like, just off the wall.
- 22:22SPEAKER_01: And then he goes solo and he's appears halfway normal.
- 22:28SPEAKER_09: Yeah.
- 22:28SPEAKER_09: What changed?
- 22:29SPEAKER_09: I don't know.
- 22:31SPEAKER_09: Maybe he was like maybe I think maybe he was like trying to find his identity in the band.
- 22:37unknown: Yeah.
- 22:38SPEAKER_09: That's why he was so weird, because he had, you know, there's other people.
- 22:40SPEAKER_09: You gotta stand out.
- 22:41SPEAKER_09: Yeah.
- 22:41SPEAKER_09: And then when you're solo, you can do whatever you want, because it's all about you.
- 22:45SPEAKER_00: Right.
- 22:45SPEAKER_09: So maybe that was it.
- 22:46SPEAKER_09: I don't know.
- 22:47SPEAKER_09: But one of my one of my favorite songs of all time is Book of Love by Peter Gabriel.
- 22:52SPEAKER_09: It's just a fantastic song.
- 22:54SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 22:54SPEAKER_00: Oh, I love Peter Gabriel's music.
- 22:55SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 22:56SPEAKER_09: Just but but when he was with Genesis, I'm like, I could take it or leave it, you know?
- 23:01SPEAKER_09: Yeah.
- 23:02SPEAKER_09: I like Phil Collins, Mike Rutherford, Tony Banks Genesis better.
- 23:05SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 23:06SPEAKER_01: But even even Phil Collins, even the Genesis before they before they went all out pop, um, they were st and they were still a little prog.
- 23:17SPEAKER_01: Um they would put you know their pop songs on their albums, but they still had longer prog songs.
- 23:24SPEAKER_01: Oh yeah.
- 23:24SPEAKER_01: Even on like Invisible Touch, there's what's a uh what's uh domino?
- 23:29SPEAKER_01: It's very electronic, but it's like an instrumental, yeah.
- 23:31SPEAKER_01: And there was um a bunch of like progressive rock type stuff.
- 23:35SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 23:36SPEAKER_01: Um so well, I mean that was still pretty cool, but yeah, I like I like Genesis um post 70s as well.
- 23:44SPEAKER_01: Any other ones that changed?
- 23:46SPEAKER_01: Well, I mean, I'm looking I just had a for example of Van Halen.
- 23:51SPEAKER_01: So you had Roth.
- 23:53SPEAKER_01: We've talked about this to death, but uh Hagar came in and arguably two separate bands.
- 24:00SPEAKER_09: Well so that well that's the thing.
- 24:01SPEAKER_09: I mean, we we know Van Halen from both eras.
- 24:04SPEAKER_09: We know we know the Roth era and the the Hagar era.
- 24:07SPEAKER_00: Yep.
- 24:08SPEAKER_09: And we love them both.
- 24:09SPEAKER_09: Yep.
- 24:09SPEAKER_09: I mean, yeah, they're two separate bands, but but I think once Eddie star Eddie started going down his road and they got Jer uh Gary Sharone, that's when I was like, yeah.
- 24:20SPEAKER_01: I'm the same.
- 24:21SPEAKER_01: Yeah, I'm the same.
- 24:22SPEAKER_01: Once Hagar left, uh I'm not gonna say I didn't buy Van Halen 3 because I own it.
- 24:28SPEAKER_01: I mean Yeah, I have it too.
- 24:29SPEAKER_01: Because, you know, I love Van Halen just period.
- 24:32SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 24:32SPEAKER_01: Um but you know, when Hagar came along, it just it it spoke to me more than than Roth.
- 24:41SPEAKER_01: And I love Roth.
- 24:42SPEAKER_01: Yeah the Roth years.
- 24:44SPEAKER_01: Um but it was just more melodic.
- 24:47SPEAKER_01: Again, we've talked this talk this to death, but I d I didn't stop following them when Gary joined, but I did lose interest.
- 24:55SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 24:56SPEAKER_01: I did lose interest.
- 24:56SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 24:57SPEAKER_01: And then after that, they just kind of uh went away for a while.
- 25:01SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 25:02SPEAKER_01: Pretty much.
- 25:03SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 25:04SPEAKER_01: So uh who else?
- 25:05SPEAKER_01: Let's see.
- 25:07SPEAKER_01: Can you think of anybody else that changed?
- 25:12SPEAKER_01: Uh changed?
- 25:13SPEAKER_01: Yeah, changed, and we we lost interest in them.
- 25:17SPEAKER_09: I don't really know.
- 25:20SPEAKER_01: Uh well here.
- 25:21SPEAKER_01: Let's do this.
- 25:23SPEAKER_01: So you were into Metallica from the beginning.
- 25:26SPEAKER_09: Wow.
- 25:27SPEAKER_01: Kill 'em all.
- 25:27SPEAKER_09: No, no, no.
- 25:28SPEAKER_09: No.
- 25:28SPEAKER_09: I I started losing Metallica and Justice for All.
- 25:31SPEAKER_01: Okay, so Injustice for All.
- 25:33SPEAKER_09: Yeah, then I went back and got through, yeah.
- 25:36SPEAKER_01: But they did change on the black album.
- 25:41SPEAKER_09: Uh yes and no.
- 25:44SPEAKER_01: Well, they'd never, besides one, they'd never done like a ballad.
- 25:48SPEAKER_09: One's not a ballad.
- 25:50SPEAKER_01: Well, I mean, slow like that, right?
- 25:52SPEAKER_09: Yeah, I mean that uh uh unforgiven.
- 25:55SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 25:55SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 25:56SPEAKER_01: But that was on the black album.
- 25:56SPEAKER_09: That was on the black album.
- 25:57SPEAKER_01: Nothing else matters is on the black album.
- 25:59SPEAKER_09: Yeah, that's another one.
- 26:00SPEAKER_01: You know?
- 26:00SPEAKER_09: Yeah, they did they it did change, but it became more because that was that was that was Bob Rock.
- 26:06SPEAKER_09: Became more commercial, right?
- 26:07SPEAKER_09: Yeah.
- 26:08SPEAKER_09: Became more commercial, and then after and then and then they did the load and reload albums, and I was like Well, I was also gonna I was gonna ask you, so did you did you lose interest in it?
- 26:18SPEAKER_09: I didn't lose interest, but I was like, uh I don't like it as much.
- 26:21SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 26:22SPEAKER_09: But then after that, they got and then they did Saint Anger, which was I like it, but it's really like there are things I like about it.
- 26:32SPEAKER_09: Yeah, it was like they were like, Well, let's give Lars a trash can and I'll just we'll just write random lyrics and then we'll put it, we'll put an album on it.
- 26:44SPEAKER_09: Yeah.
- 26:44SPEAKER_09: While we find a bass player.
- 26:46SPEAKER_09: Right.
- 26:48SPEAKER_09: It's just it's just it's just it's just real and then you know, and then James' like, well, I'm gonna go to rehab.
- 26:53SPEAKER_09: I'll see you guys later.
- 26:54SPEAKER_09: Yeah.
- 26:54SPEAKER_09: You know, it's just it's just the most bizarre album.
- 26:57SPEAKER_01: Yeah, I have that DVD.
- 26:59SPEAKER_09: Which I think some kind of monster.
- 27:01SPEAKER_09: I mean, it's a great documentary.
- 27:03SPEAKER_09: You really see, I mean, they almost fell apart completely.
- 27:06SPEAKER_00: Yep.
- 27:06SPEAKER_09: You know, the fact that they're still playing is amazing.
- 27:09SPEAKER_09: But after that, they got back to what they're good, like Death Magnetic and all that, you know, after since then they've put out like banger after banger after banger.
- 27:19SPEAKER_01: Yep.
- 27:20SPEAKER_09: So but I like when I'm listening to Metallica, I listen from Kill Em All to the Black album, and then I kind of skipped it, skip around the lower when they cut their hair and stuff, you know, stuff like that.
- 27:35SPEAKER_06: Yeah.
- 27:36SPEAKER_09: And then, you know, I'll there's a smattering of sane anger, and then then I and then it's death magnetic and those guys, you know, up to up to 72 seasons.
- 27:45SPEAKER_06: Right.
- 27:45SPEAKER_09: You know, that that's the big th those are my favorite phases, but that middle nineties.
- 27:52SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 27:53SPEAKER_09: Yeah.
- 27:54SPEAKER_09: It's okay.
- 27:54SPEAKER_09: I mean there's some good stuff on there, like uh House that Jack built and uh Oh yeah, you know, fuel, you know.
- 28:01SPEAKER_01: Fuel, oh yeah.
- 28:02SPEAKER_09: Great song.
- 28:02SPEAKER_09: Yeah, you know, a lot of good stuff on there, but it's just not my favorite.
- 28:05SPEAKER_01: You know, it was like they were experimenting, yeah.
- 28:10SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 28:10SPEAKER_01: And you know, why wouldn't you?
- 28:13SPEAKER_09: And you know, speaking of Metallica, you gotta go to Megadeth.
- 28:16SPEAKER_01: Yep.
- 28:17SPEAKER_09: Because he's gone through guitar player after guitar player after guitar guitar player.
- 28:22SPEAKER_00: Yep.
- 28:22SPEAKER_09: You know, but it but it's always stayed the same because it's him, it's a force of personality.
- 28:28SPEAKER_00: Yep.
- 28:28SPEAKER_09: You know, it's Dave Mustaine.
- 28:30SPEAKER_00: Yep.
- 28:31SPEAKER_09: You know?
- 28:32SPEAKER_09: So it it doesn't matter who's playing behind him, it's gonna be Dave Mustaine and it's gonna be the same boom.
- 28:39SPEAKER_01: Right.
- 28:39SPEAKER_09: You know what I mean?
- 28:40SPEAKER_09: Yep.
- 28:40SPEAKER_09: It doesn't matter if it's like, you know, killing is my business and business is good, or the new, you know, like, you know, up to like tornado of souls and stuff like that.
- 28:50SPEAKER_09: You know what I mean?
- 28:51SPEAKER_09: Yep.
- 28:51SPEAKER_09: It's just a force of personality.
- 28:53SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 28:54SPEAKER_01: So yeah, well, I just thought it was an interesting um oh, I'm just looking, I'm just looking at the posters in here.
- 29:02SPEAKER_01: Say Def Leopard.
- 29:03SPEAKER_01: Did you lose interest in Def Leopard?
- 29:05SPEAKER_01: You did.
- 29:05SPEAKER_01: You should have to do that.
- 29:06SPEAKER_09: I did after after uh Adrenalize Adrenalize, yeah.
- 29:08SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 29:09SPEAKER_09: Yeah.
- 29:09SPEAKER_09: After that I was kind of like, eh.
- 29:12SPEAKER_09: Because they started doing the same thing.
- 29:13SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 29:14SPEAKER_01: Well, they were trying to recreate the success.
- 29:16SPEAKER_09: Yeah, they were trying to do hysteria all over again and stuff like that.
- 29:18SPEAKER_09: Because Adrenalize was okay, but it wasn't great.
- 29:21SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 29:22SPEAKER_09: And then after that I was like, uh, alright.
- 29:26SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 29:26SPEAKER_01: So he That was fun.
- 29:27SPEAKER_01: So my thing with Def Leopard uh is kind of strange because I, you know, obviously was was turned onto Deaf Leopard with Pyromania.
- 29:37SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 29:37SPEAKER_01: And then hysteria.
- 29:38SPEAKER_01: Right.
- 29:38SPEAKER_01: Because that's my that's where I grew up.
- 29:41SPEAKER_01: Um and hysteria was just this this like huge thing.
- 29:45SPEAKER_09: Oh yeah, you couldn't get away from it.
- 29:47SPEAKER_01: And so they had they develop had developed a sound.
- 29:50SPEAKER_01: They started developing the sound of pyromania.
- 29:53SPEAKER_01: And they finished developing their sound on hysteria because on adrenalize, that sound was from hysteria.
- 29:59SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 30:01SPEAKER_01: It's basically the same thing.
- 30:02SPEAKER_01: When I got into Def Leopard, I started going back, which is what you do.
- 30:07SPEAKER_01: Right.
- 30:07SPEAKER_01: You know, you go back to their earlier albums, and their first two albums to me are my favorite.
- 30:15SPEAKER_01: Um because it's raw and because it's well, I mean, it's it's well, they were younger.
- 30:24SPEAKER_01: I mean, it would the the the the um the energy was there.
- 30:28SPEAKER_08: Yeah.
- 30:29SPEAKER_01: You know?
- 30:30SPEAKER_01: And when I saw I saw a thing recently on the internet, I can't remember what it was on, but um Joe Elliott was talking to a to a crowd.
- 30:41SPEAKER_01: Actually, no, we I think we played it one time on on the podcast.
- 30:44SPEAKER_01: He was talking to the crowd, and then Phil Collin goes into Wasted from the first album.
- 30:49SPEAKER_09: Yeah, we're yeah, we're talking their new uh live albums.
- 30:51SPEAKER_01: Yeah, and I was just like, why don't they do more of this?
- 30:54SPEAKER_01: Yeah, you know, um from the old stuff.
- 30:58SPEAKER_01: And so I like the I like the first album, first two albums, better uh differently than I like Hysteria and Pyromania.
- 31:08SPEAKER_01: Right.
- 31:09SPEAKER_01: And so I didn't lose obviously I didn't lose interest in them, but my interest changed a little bit.
- 31:17SPEAKER_01: Uh I did follow them after Adrenalize, but not many people did because they just went the different directions.
- 31:25SPEAKER_01: Which they were trying to they're experimenting and trying to fit in.
- 31:28SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 31:29SPEAKER_01: You know, you cannot blame a band for trying to um well you can, but you can't.
- 31:34SPEAKER_01: Right.
- 31:34SPEAKER_01: You know.
- 31:35SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 31:35SPEAKER_09: You're like, well, that was a nice try, guys.
- 31:38SPEAKER_09: Uh give you A for effort, but uh F for production and uh uh you suck.
- 31:44SPEAKER_01: Go back to what we like.
- 31:46SPEAKER_01: Yeah, what you what we love about you.
- 31:48SPEAKER_01: Yeah, you know.
- 31:49SPEAKER_01: And you know, it's it's almost a cash 22.
- 31:52SPEAKER_01: It's almost like, you know, because you want to expand your fan base you know, you uh but you want to please your fan base, your original fan base.
- 32:02SPEAKER_09: Right.
- 32:03SPEAKER_09: Well you want to evolve, but you don't want to evolve into something completely different.
- 32:06SPEAKER_09: Right.
- 32:07SPEAKER_01: You know, yeah.
- 32:08SPEAKER_01: So you don't want to yeah.
- 32:09SPEAKER_01: You don't want oh my computer went to sleep there.
- 32:11SPEAKER_01: Sorry.
- 32:12SPEAKER_09: Yeah, that's why that's why I like Rush so much because they basically did the same thing from the 70s all the way up to the 2000s.
- 32:19SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 32:20SPEAKER_09: They didn't really they didn't really deviate from what they did.
- 32:23SPEAKER_01: Right.
- 32:23SPEAKER_09: They shortened the songs, that was about it.
- 32:25SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 32:26SPEAKER_09: You know, they weren't doing 21 minute songs anymore.
- 32:29SPEAKER_01: So you never lost interest in Rush?
- 32:31SPEAKER_09: No.
- 32:31SPEAKER_01: Right.
- 32:32SPEAKER_09: No, I mean, if nothing else, it's more.
- 32:36SPEAKER_09: It's more, you know, you go more of a deep dive.
- 32:39SPEAKER_09: You know, you're not listening to Tom Sawyer and the Limeline.
- 32:42SPEAKER_01: Right, you're listening to the album cuts.
- 32:43SPEAKER_09: Yeah, you're listening to the you know, you're looking at Caress of Steel.
- 32:46SPEAKER_09: Right.
- 32:46SPEAKER_09: You're listening to that album.
- 32:48SPEAKER_09: If you're listening to Cress of Steel, you are a lonely mother effort.
- 32:52SPEAKER_09: You know what I mean?
- 32:53SPEAKER_09: Tell me why.
- 32:54SPEAKER_09: You because it is it is the it is a weird, weird album.
- 32:59SPEAKER_09: It's the one with Necromancer on it.
- 33:01SPEAKER_01: Okay.
- 33:02SPEAKER_09: And that is just a long, really like bizarre song.
- 33:07SPEAKER_09: But if you're listening to Cress of Steel, you're like, I'm a super nerd.
- 33:10SPEAKER_01: Wow.
- 33:11SPEAKER_09: You know what I mean?
- 33:12SPEAKER_09: Yeah.
- 33:12SPEAKER_09: And that's how far I've gone.
- 33:14SPEAKER_01: See, I haven't I haven't dived deep into Rush, but I will tell you that some of my favorite Rush songs are later songs, like off Vapor Trails.
- 33:23SPEAKER_09: Oh yeah.
- 33:24SPEAKER_09: I mean, yeah, I mean, like they say, that they've been they've been pretty consistent all the way through their career.
- 33:30SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 33:30SPEAKER_09: You know, that's what that's what I like about them.
- 33:32SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 33:33SPEAKER_09: So, you know.
- 33:34SPEAKER_09: But that's that.
- 33:35SPEAKER_01: What about other genres?
- 33:36SPEAKER_01: Uh I'm just kind of branching out here.
- 33:38SPEAKER_01: Is there any other like are there any you don't listen to country music, so you wouldn't really know uh if anything.
- 33:44SPEAKER_01: Well, and they don't really change in country music.
- 33:46SPEAKER_09: Not really.
- 33:47SPEAKER_09: They I mean they've gone bro country, but you know, that's a that's a whole other It is.
- 33:51SPEAKER_09: They don't they don't really yeah, I mean, country ours don't really change in my life.
- 33:54SPEAKER_01: Pop music doesn't really either.
- 33:56SPEAKER_09: Pop you know, that doesn't really well.
- 33:58SPEAKER_01: I mean, unless you're talking about Taylor Swift, who started supposedly supposedly and then she came pop, and you know.
- 34:04SPEAKER_01: So do you like early Taylor Swift or I don't like Taylor Swift at all.
- 34:07SPEAKER_01: At all.
- 34:07SPEAKER_01: You don't like any of her stuff beside that one song.
- 34:09SPEAKER_09: Well, that one song, oh I can't think of the name of it.
- 34:11SPEAKER_01: It was uh You Belong with me?
- 34:13SPEAKER_09: Yeah, that's it.
- 34:14SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 34:15SPEAKER_09: I I only found out about that song because Weird Al did a parody of it.
- 34:19SPEAKER_09: So I yeah Of course she did.
- 34:21SPEAKER_09: Yeah, so I mean I love Weird.
- 34:22SPEAKER_09: See, there's another, there's a guy who hasn't changed.
- 34:25SPEAKER_09: There's a guy that has not changed one iota in 40 some years, is Weird Al.
- 34:30SPEAKER_09: Right.
- 34:30SPEAKER_09: Weird Al is gonna be Weird Al from the time from time memorial.
- 34:35SPEAKER_00: Yep.
- 34:35SPEAKER_09: You know what I mean?
- 34:35SPEAKER_09: That guy why that guy's not in the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, I will never know.
- 34:39SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 34:39SPEAKER_01: Hopefully he does go inside.
- 34:41SPEAKER_01: I hope he does.
- 34:41SPEAKER_09: I think that would be great.
- 34:42SPEAKER_01: Yeah, he belongs there.
- 34:43SPEAKER_09: He does.
- 34:44SPEAKER_01: Yep.
- 34:45SPEAKER_09: I mean, you know, very storied career.
- 34:47SPEAKER_01: Oh, yeah, I agree.
- 34:48SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 34:49SPEAKER_01: Um, let's move on.
- 34:51SPEAKER_01: Let's do Max D.
- 34:56SPEAKER_09: Oh, by the way, cousin Larry sent me a really funny video of Sammy Hagar with Cheech and Chong.
- 35:02SPEAKER_09: Yeah.
- 35:02SPEAKER_09: And they're doing Save the Whales.
- 35:05SPEAKER_01: Really?
- 35:05SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 35:06SPEAKER_01: You have to show me after.
- 35:07SPEAKER_01: Do you still have it?
- 35:07SPEAKER_09: Yeah, I think so, but it's really it was kind of funny.
- 35:11SPEAKER_09: It was just really I forgot about that song.
- 35:13SPEAKER_09: Save the Wales.
- 35:14SPEAKER_09: You remember Save the Wales?
- 35:14SPEAKER_01: No.
- 35:15SPEAKER_01: You don't remember Save the Wales?
- 35:16SPEAKER_01: Don't remember Save the Whales.
- 35:18SPEAKER_01: No, I don't remember that.
- 35:20SPEAKER_01: Oh, yeah, that's great.
- 35:22SPEAKER_01: Um speaking of uh Cousin Larry, not that we were.
- 35:26SPEAKER_01: Uh the clash of the Titans this week, and I won.
- 35:30SPEAKER_01: I beat Eli in fantasy football.
- 35:33SPEAKER_08: Yeah.
- 35:34SPEAKER_01: Yep.
- 35:34SPEAKER_01: So I'm eight and one, and he's seven and two.
- 35:37SPEAKER_09: Yep.
- 35:38unknown: Yay!
- 35:40SPEAKER_09: I felt bad.
- 35:40SPEAKER_09: Cousin Larry beat John.
- 35:42SPEAKER_09: Yeah, I saw that.
- 35:42SPEAKER_09: Yeah, I was like, oh, good for him.
- 35:44SPEAKER_09: He still laughs.
- 35:45SPEAKER_09: He is, but still Olivia's knocking on that door.
- 35:47SPEAKER_01: Yep.
- 35:48SPEAKER_09: So the girl.
- 35:51SPEAKER_09: I'm so sorry.
- 35:52SPEAKER_01: She she sends me like NFL memes.
- 35:54SPEAKER_01: I got her.
- 35:54SPEAKER_01: I'm so proud of that that I got her into football.
- 35:57SPEAKER_01: She's she's uh she watches football and over in Ohio all by herself sometimes.
- 36:02SPEAKER_09: That's kind of sad.
- 36:03SPEAKER_01: Well, I mean I said sometimes, you know, and she she'll go to a bar with some of her friends and and they'll watch football.
- 36:09SPEAKER_01: Seriously.
- 36:10SPEAKER_09: Yeah, but Ohio football is like you got Cleveland, Cincinnati.
- 36:14SPEAKER_09: Yeah.
- 36:15SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 36:16SPEAKER_01: But she no, she f she's a Niners fan.
- 36:18SPEAKER_01: Yeah, I know, but you know, it's still But the fact that just being in Ohio.
- 36:22SPEAKER_01: The fact that she knows more players' names than I do.
- 36:24SPEAKER_09: Well that's good.
- 36:25SPEAKER_01: You know, and her she's a smart she's a smart cookie.
- 36:27SPEAKER_01: Actually, her and all my kids, Jude and uh Eli and Finn, they're all they're all into football.
- 36:33SPEAKER_09: Well, they're into like stats and stuff like that.
- 36:35SPEAKER_01: True, this is true.
- 36:36SPEAKER_09: You know.
- 36:37SPEAKER_01: Alright, so let's do mixtape.
- 36:39SPEAKER_01: So passed.
- 36:40SPEAKER_01: Passed.
- 36:41SPEAKER_01: So I don't even remember what last time it was.
- 36:43SPEAKER_01: Uh that was the um crap.
- 36:49SPEAKER_09: What was it?
- 36:51SPEAKER_09: Oh, it was the Kevin Bacon one.
- 36:52SPEAKER_01: Oh, that's right.
- 36:54SPEAKER_01: And I picked the the Smokey Robinson song.
- 36:56SPEAKER_09: Right.
- 36:57SPEAKER_01: And you picked TMI.
- 36:59SPEAKER_09: TMI and Cousin Larry did uh Beatles.
- 37:02SPEAKER_09: Come together.
- 37:03SPEAKER_09: Something like that?
- 37:04SPEAKER_09: Something like that.
- 37:06SPEAKER_09: Well anyway, this is what the judge said.
- 37:08SPEAKER_09: Uh this week's picks this week this week.
- 37:13SPEAKER_09: This week's picks were really fun to listen to and a hard pick.
- 37:17SPEAKER_09: I'm sure all three songs would definitely help Kevin want to hire one of the three of you.
- 37:21SPEAKER_09: And ultimately I had to go with Don't Look Back.
- 37:24SPEAKER_09: The message of the song is just really great, and it definitely appears to hold sentimental value to Kevin in some manner, and I think that would be the one to win him over.
- 37:33SPEAKER_01: I I agree wholeheartedly.
- 37:35SPEAKER_01: That's why I picked it because he's he's you know, obviously likes that song.
- 37:39SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 37:39SPEAKER_01: TMI, though, is a great song.
- 37:42SPEAKER_09: Okay, so that's passed.
- 37:44SPEAKER_09: Uh present is the uh exciting about being stood up or something.
- 37:49SPEAKER_09: Yeah, you're excited for your first date with a new love interest after waiting nervously at the restaurant for some time.
- 37:55SPEAKER_09: You realize your date stood you up.
- 37:56SPEAKER_09: What song do you play on the way home?
- 37:58SPEAKER_09: So I will go to Cousin Larry.
- 38:01SPEAKER_00: Okay.
- 38:05SPEAKER_09: Alright.
- 38:07SPEAKER_09: Okay.
- 38:09SPEAKER_09: Mixtape.
- 38:10SPEAKER_09: As always, a few different songs come to mind.
- 38:14SPEAKER_01: I never know which one to look at.
- 38:15SPEAKER_09: Exactly.
- 38:16SPEAKER_09: Because he always goes off on like other songs.
- 38:18SPEAKER_09: Um Time for Me to Fly by Ario Speedwagon.
- 38:22SPEAKER_01: Oh, great song.
- 38:23SPEAKER_09: This Night Won't Last Forever by Michael Johnson.
- 38:25SPEAKER_01: Also a great song.
- 38:26SPEAKER_09: And Alone Again, naturally, by Gilbert O'Sullivan.
- 38:30SPEAKER_01: Also a great song.
- 38:31SPEAKER_09: Uh but my choice, and the first song I thought of was All By Myself by Eric Carman.
- 38:37SPEAKER_09: So I thought that was great.
- 38:39SPEAKER_01: I think that's gonna well, actually, I don't know yours, but I think that's gonna win.
- 38:43SPEAKER_01: Um because that's a perfect song after you got stood up to to listen to When I was young, I never needed anyone.
- 39:06SPEAKER_05: Making love was just for fun.
- 39:12SPEAKER_05: Those days have come.
- 39:18SPEAKER_01: Live on just play until the chorus.
- 39:21SPEAKER_09: Oh yeah.
- 39:22SPEAKER_09: Well you guys the chorus is the best part, right?
- 39:25SPEAKER_09: This is I would say this is almost a standard.
- 39:30SPEAKER_09: All by myself.
- 39:31SPEAKER_09: Oh yeah.
- 39:31SPEAKER_09: Yeah, yeah.
- 39:37SPEAKER_01: Just lost every common recently.
- 39:39SPEAKER_01: Yeah, less than peace.
- 40:21SPEAKER_09: Oh, that's way better.
- 40:21SPEAKER_09: Yeah.
- 40:22SPEAKER_01: All right, so what is your choice?
- 40:24SPEAKER_09: My choice was Everybody Hurts by R.E.M.
- 40:29SPEAKER_01: Great song.
- 40:38SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 40:40SPEAKER_01: See, I don't know.
- 40:41SPEAKER_01: That's that's a good choice, too.
- 40:44SPEAKER_01: I know I'm I know I'm gonna lose this week.
- 40:46SPEAKER_01: I can tell you that right now.
- 40:48SPEAKER_09: That's gonna be tough.
- 40:48SPEAKER_09: I feel bad for the judge.
- 40:50SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 40:50SPEAKER_01: Well, I mean, I think it's between these two.
- 40:57SPEAKER_01: Jeez, this is tough.
- 40:59SPEAKER_01: I would almost go with this one.
- 41:04SPEAKER_01: Over over air.
- 41:48SPEAKER_01: Yeah, it's yeah, that's that's that's a tough one.
- 41:51SPEAKER_01: That's a tough one.
- 41:51SPEAKER_01: That's a tough one because um I don't know.
- 41:56SPEAKER_01: The Eric Carmen one works, but that one almost works more.
- 42:02SPEAKER_01: Um because mine mine does not work.
- 42:06SPEAKER_01: I mean it kind of does.
- 42:08SPEAKER_01: But did you pick Will Smith's to get in jiggy with it?
- 42:11SPEAKER_01: I did not.
- 42:12SPEAKER_01: That would have been funny.
- 42:24SPEAKER_01: This is John Hyatt.
- 42:26SPEAKER_01: Stood up.
- 42:27SPEAKER_09: Oh, well.
- 42:30SPEAKER_09: Kind of hit the nail on the head right there.
- 42:32SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 42:33SPEAKER_01: Um, it's a play on words, but in the chorus he does say I got stood up once.
- 44:01SPEAKER_01: So I got I got stood up once, left out in the pour and rain, but I stood up and I'll do it again.
- 44:07SPEAKER_01: So it was a good message, but uh uh I think everybody hurts.
- 44:11SPEAKER_01: And if I had to if I had to lobby for one, it would be that one.
- 44:14SPEAKER_09: Well, we'll see.
- 44:15SPEAKER_01: Yeah, we'll see.
- 44:16SPEAKER_09: We'll leave it up to our lovely and fantabulous judge.
- 44:19SPEAKER_01: Right.
- 44:20SPEAKER_01: So that is present.
- 44:21SPEAKER_01: That's present.
- 44:22SPEAKER_01: What is future?
- 44:23SPEAKER_10: Future mixtape.
- 44:26SPEAKER_10: What is going to be the question for future mixtape?
- 44:34SPEAKER_09: Oh, this is a good one.
- 44:36SPEAKER_09: You're eight years old, right riding shotgun next to your dad, and he cranks the volume when this song comes on.
- 44:44SPEAKER_01: Eight years old.
- 44:45SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 44:46SPEAKER_01: Alright.
- 44:47SPEAKER_01: Shotgun next to my dad.
- 44:52SPEAKER_09: That'll be interesting.
- 44:53SPEAKER_09: Yeah.
- 44:54SPEAKER_09: I'm gonna send this to cousin Larry.
- 45:05SPEAKER_01: Eight years old would have put me at, let's see.
- 45:14SPEAKER_01: So I was seven and eight.
- 45:20SPEAKER_09: There we go.
- 45:22SPEAKER_01: No, eighty-three would have been, I would have been ten.
- 45:24SPEAKER_01: So I would have been it would have been eighty-one.
- 45:29SPEAKER_01: Yeah, eighty-one.
- 45:32SPEAKER_01: So what was my dad listening to in 1981?
- 45:36SPEAKER_01: Rimsky Korsakov.
- 45:39SPEAKER_01: What?
- 45:40SPEAKER_01: A classical song.
- 45:41SPEAKER_01: Oh.
- 45:42SPEAKER_01: My favorite classical piece.
- 45:43SPEAKER_01: Well, actually, uh other than Samuel Barber.
- 45:46SPEAKER_01: Uh uh Adagio for Strength.
- 45:49SPEAKER_01: Oh, yeah, that's a great course.
- 45:51SPEAKER_01: Platoon, right?
- 45:52SPEAKER_01: Platoon, man.
- 45:52SPEAKER_01: Yeah, that's like my favorite classical piece.
- 45:54SPEAKER_01: But then there's Rimsky Korsakov, the Russian Easter Overture.
- 45:58SPEAKER_01: You should listen to that.
- 45:59SPEAKER_01: It's awesome.
- 46:00SPEAKER_01: It's long, but it's awesome.
- 46:02SPEAKER_01: They're all long.
- 46:03SPEAKER_01: Yeah, true.
- 46:04SPEAKER_01: Alright, so that's uh mixtape for this week.
- 46:07SPEAKER_01: And we're gonna take a break.
- 46:08SPEAKER_01: We're gonna hear from the Beatles book, and we'll climb the wall of tunes.

- 47:34SPEAKER_01: Let me start that music first.
- 47:46SPEAKER_01: I'm gonna read from Hard Days Right.
- 47:49SPEAKER_01: Hard Day's Right?
- 47:50SPEAKER_01: What song?
- 47:50SPEAKER_09: Ticket to Ride.
- 47:52SPEAKER_09: Alrighty.
- 47:53SPEAKER_09: But she don't care.
- 47:55SPEAKER_09: Ticket to Ride was written by John and Paul as a single and described by John as one of the earliest heavy metal records made.
- 48:03SPEAKER_06: Really?
- 48:03SPEAKER_09: That's what he said.
- 48:05SPEAKER_09: Although they were pipped at the mo at the post.
- 48:09SPEAKER_09: What the frick does that mean?
- 48:12SPEAKER_09: Although they were pipped at the post in the heavy metal stakes by the Kinks, you really got me, which charted in Britain.
- 48:19SPEAKER_09: Yeah, I guess so.
- 48:20SPEAKER_01: I guess so.
- 48:20SPEAKER_09: Why don't you just speak English?
- 48:22SPEAKER_01: Right.
- 48:23SPEAKER_01: Of course he is probably English.
- 48:24SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 48:25SPEAKER_09: Which charted in Britain the previous summer.
- 48:27SPEAKER_09: This was the first Beatles track to feature an insistent clanking riff underpined by a heavy drumbeat, and it used a fade out with an altered melody.
- 48:41SPEAKER_09: Paul confessed to his biographer Barry Miles that the apparently loopy suggest made by some American fans at the time that the song was referring to a British Railways ticket to the town of Ride on the Isle of Wight was partly right.
- 48:56SPEAKER_09: Paul's cousin Betty Robbins and her husband Mike ran the bow bars in Union Street Ride.
- 49:03SPEAKER_09: And Paul and John had visited them there.
- 49:06SPEAKER_09: Although the song was primarily about a girl riding out of riding out of the life of the narrator, they were conscious of the potential for a double meeting.
- 49:15SPEAKER_09: Don Short, a show business journalist who traveled extensively with the Beatles in the 60s, was told by John that the phrase had yet another meaning.
- 49:25SPEAKER_09: The girls who worked the streets in Hamburg had to have a clean bill of health, and so the medical authorities would give them a card saying that they didn't have a dose of anything, says Short.
- 49:35SPEAKER_09: I was with the Beatles when they went back to Hamburg in June 1966, and it was then that John told me that he had coined the phrase a ticket to ride to describe these cards.
- 49:46SPEAKER_09: He could have been joking.
- 49:47SPEAKER_09: You always had to be careful with John like that, but I certainly remember him remember him telling me that.
- 49:54SPEAKER_09: So there you go.
- 49:57SPEAKER_01: I love the song, but I don't I don't hear heavy metal at all.
- 50:00SPEAKER_01: No.
- 50:30SPEAKER_01: All right.
- 50:31SPEAKER_01: Uh time to climb the wall, sir.
- 50:33SPEAKER_01: I already declined.
- 50:34SPEAKER_01: I climbed the wall.
- 50:34SPEAKER_01: I have a wall.
- 50:35SPEAKER_01: I have an album.
- 50:36SPEAKER_01: I have an album.
- 50:36SPEAKER_01: Sounds wonderful.
- 50:38SPEAKER_01: Let's guessing begin.
- 50:46SPEAKER_09: Um, you're looking at it like you've never seen that.
- 52:09SPEAKER_09: I don't think I've ever seen the song.
- 52:10SPEAKER_01: Are you serious?
- 52:11SPEAKER_01: Yeah, well, you know the songs from it though.
- 52:14SPEAKER_01: Yeah, yeah.
- 52:14SPEAKER_01: Oh yeah.
- 52:16SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 52:16SPEAKER_01: Had let's see, one, two, three, four, five hits.
- 52:22SPEAKER_01: Like on the radio, radio hits on this album.
- 52:25SPEAKER_01: Okay.
- 52:25SPEAKER_01: Um let me see.
- 52:28SPEAKER_01: So this is, by the way, this is We Can't We Can't Dance.
- 52:31SPEAKER_01: Did I already say that?
- 52:31SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 52:32SPEAKER_09: Because that's when I started looking at it like.
- 52:34SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 52:35SPEAKER_01: Who?
- 52:36SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 52:38unknown: Oh.
- 52:40SPEAKER_01: Right?
- 52:40SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 52:40SPEAKER_01: I can't dance.
- 52:41SPEAKER_09: For some reason I thought this was on Invisible Touch.
- 52:44SPEAKER_01: Yep, nope.
- 52:44SPEAKER_01: This was, yeah.
- 52:45SPEAKER_01: This was the album after Invisible Touch.
- 52:47SPEAKER_01: Okay.
- 52:48SPEAKER_01: There was like, I don't know, five years in between.
- 52:50SPEAKER_01: This came out in '91.
- 52:52SPEAKER_09: Okay.
- 52:52SPEAKER_09: Sounds about right.
- 52:53SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 52:57SPEAKER_01: First, I'll just play you a little bit of each of the hits.
- 52:59SPEAKER_01: Because there were like five hit songs on here.
- 53:03SPEAKER_01: Everybody knows this one.
- 53:05SPEAKER_01: Here's a ballad.
- 53:14SPEAKER_01: Give it a second.
- 53:15SPEAKER_01: Oh, yeah.
- 53:17SPEAKER_09: Yep.
- 53:17SPEAKER_09: Don't ask me what the name of it is.
- 53:20SPEAKER_09: Never a time.
- 53:21SPEAKER_09: Thank you.
- 53:21SPEAKER_04: There is no time to this seems to me.
- 53:31SPEAKER_04: Lost our way.
- 53:33SPEAKER_04: This is another one.
- 53:48SPEAKER_01: You don't you you've never heard this?
- 53:50SPEAKER_09: I don't believe so.
- 53:52SPEAKER_01: Give it a second.
- 53:54SPEAKER_01: This is a big hit for them, I think.
- 54:01SPEAKER_02: Well, the key to my survival is never in much doubt.
- 54:11SPEAKER_02: The question was how I could keep saying, trying to find a way out.
- 54:21SPEAKER_02: Things were never easy for me.
- 54:24SPEAKER_02: Peace of mine was hard to find.
- 54:29SPEAKER_02: And I needed a place where I recognize it at all.
- 54:36SPEAKER_01: Really?
- 54:37SPEAKER_01: Nope.
- 54:39SPEAKER_01: Does not sound happen all the time.
- 54:46SPEAKER_01: No son of mine.
- 54:49SPEAKER_01: Really?
- 54:49SPEAKER_01: Interesting.
- 54:51SPEAKER_01: Not ringing any bells.
- 54:53SPEAKER_01: Let me just let me get to the chorus, just because maybe you've heard the chorus.
- 55:02SPEAKER_09: I like how you think I've heard the chorus when I haven't heard any of the other part of the live.
- 55:07SPEAKER_09: I just like, oh hey, that was a good talk.
- 55:10SPEAKER_09: Well, usually no.
- 55:12SPEAKER_01: Just give it a second.
- 55:16SPEAKER_09: I'll play the guitar solo.
- 55:18SPEAKER_09: You'll know that from the guitar solo.
- 55:20SPEAKER_09: I probably you probably will.
- 55:22SPEAKER_09: Hey, hey dog, I'll play a snarehead.
- 55:25SPEAKER_09: And you'll you'll recognize it.
- 55:37SPEAKER_01: Nothing yet.
- 55:38SPEAKER_01: Nope.
- 55:48SPEAKER_01: Wow, that surprises me.
- 55:49SPEAKER_01: No.
- 55:50SPEAKER_01: Okay, here's another one, another ballad.
- 55:59SPEAKER_09: Okay, I think I've heard this one.
- 56:01SPEAKER_09: This one sounds familiar.
- 56:04SPEAKER_01: This one's called Hold on My Heart.
- 56:17SPEAKER_01: Yep.
- 56:18SPEAKER_01: So you recognize this one.
- 56:19SPEAKER_01: Oh yeah.
- 56:19SPEAKER_01: Okay.
- 56:20SPEAKER_01: So this was a big hit for them.
- 56:22SPEAKER_01: And then the last hit really from this album is one of my favorites.
- 56:27SPEAKER_01: It's making fun of televangelists.
- 56:35SPEAKER_01: You heard this one?
- 56:40SPEAKER_09: Maybe.
- 56:43SPEAKER_09: Oh yeah, yeah.
- 56:44SPEAKER_01: Jesus He knows me.
- 56:45SPEAKER_01: Yeah, yeah, yeah.
- 56:48SPEAKER_01: So those are the hits from this album.
- 56:54SPEAKER_01: But there are.
- 56:56SPEAKER_01: I mean, we talk about them being a progressive band.
- 56:59SPEAKER_01: This one's 10 minutes.
- 57:02SPEAKER_01: Driving the Last Spike.
- 57:05SPEAKER_01: Obviously, we're not gonna listen to the whole thing.
- 57:06SPEAKER_09: There's a song about John Henry.
- 57:08SPEAKER_01: No, it's not.
- 57:11SPEAKER_01: Let's see if I can jump ahead.
- 57:14SPEAKER_01: So, like Invisible Touch, they have these long songs that have these like um sections.
- 58:19SPEAKER_01: And it goes to its lower section at the end.
- 58:21SPEAKER_01: Anyway, I mean it's one of those where it kind of uh says dreaming while you sleep.
- 58:36SPEAKER_01: Obviously very electronic.
- 58:38SPEAKER_09: Oh yeah.
- 58:38SPEAKER_09: Well that was the 90s.
- 58:40SPEAKER_01: Not as electronic as Invisible Touch, wasn't it?
- 58:42SPEAKER_09: No.
- 58:46SPEAKER_01: Anyway, I'm not gonna play the whole thing, but it's a great album.
- 58:49SPEAKER_01: It's an underrated album, I think.
- 58:51SPEAKER_01: Um they kind of got into their um comic, you know, uh persona.
- 58:59SPEAKER_01: Oh, sure.
- 59:00SPEAKER_01: Um with I can't I can't dance video.
- 59:02SPEAKER_01: Yeah, the I Can't Dance video is hilarious.
- 59:04SPEAKER_01: And Jesus He Knows Me is a funny video too.
- 59:06SPEAKER_09: I can't remember that video.
- 59:06SPEAKER_01: Yeah, it's it's uh well it's all about televangelists.
- 59:09SPEAKER_01: Oh, sure.
- 59:09SPEAKER_01: And it's yeah.
- 59:11SPEAKER_01: Um but they've always those three have always kind of had a a humorous I I I Well Phil Garns is kind of pretty a pretty funny guy.
- 59:20SPEAKER_09: He is, yeah.
- 59:21SPEAKER_09: So you know.
- 59:21SPEAKER_01: Um remember they did uh well the Invisible Touch video was kind of funny.
- 59:25SPEAKER_01: Um just kind of rehearsing and stuff.
- 59:27SPEAKER_01: Oh yeah, yeah, yeah.
- 59:28SPEAKER_01: But also um a serious song from Invisible Touch uh was Land of Confusion, but they did the video with the puppets.
- 59:38SPEAKER_01: Oh yeah.
- 59:39SPEAKER_01: You remember that?
- 59:39SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 59:40SPEAKER_01: I mean that was kind of funny.
- 59:41SPEAKER_01: Yeah, kind of disturbing in some ways.
- 59:43SPEAKER_08: A little bit, yeah.
- 59:44SPEAKER_01: Um but yeah, they've always had kind of a a comic edge to them.
- 59:47SPEAKER_08: Yeah.
- 59:47SPEAKER_01: Um at least the when they became a trio.
- 59:51SPEAKER_09: Well, yeah, right.
- 59:52SPEAKER_09: Because it's well with Peter, it would have been like what?
- 59:56SPEAKER_01: So that's the album, uh, Genesis We Can't Dance.
- 59:59SPEAKER_01: I don't think we've done that before.
- 1:00:00SPEAKER_01: We may have done so Genesis before.
- 1:00:02SPEAKER_09: I think we've done Genesis, right?
- 1:00:04SPEAKER_09: I'll have to consult the big book of the.
- 1:00:06SPEAKER_01: So that one's from 1991.
- 1:00:08SPEAKER_10: 91 Genesis is a here in my book.
- 1:00:16SPEAKER_09: I don't know, cause I can't really read.
- 1:00:19SPEAKER_09: We've done Phil Collins a bunch of times.
- 1:00:21SPEAKER_01: Oh yeah.
- 1:00:23SPEAKER_09: Genesis, Genesis, Genesis, Genesis, Genesis, Genesis, Genesis, Genesis, Genesis, nothing, Genesis, anywhere.
- 1:00:31SPEAKER_09: Seriously?
- 1:00:32SPEAKER_09: Oh, there it is.
- 1:00:33SPEAKER_01: Yeah, I know we I knew we'd we'd done Genesis.
- 1:00:36SPEAKER_09: This is only the second time we've done Genesis.
- 1:00:38SPEAKER_01: Really?
- 1:00:40SPEAKER_09: Because it only has one check mark now.
- 1:00:44SPEAKER_09: That's how we know.
- 1:00:45SPEAKER_01: There you go.
- 1:00:46SPEAKER_09: Yeah.
- 1:00:47SPEAKER_01: Alright.
- 1:00:47SPEAKER_01: So there you go.
- 1:00:48SPEAKER_09: That is the Well, I mean, you know, making like, you know, speaking of uh Chicago, when they did uh the ballet for the girl from Buchanan, that's like a series of six songs.
- 1:01:00SPEAKER_01: Movements, yeah.
- 1:01:01SPEAKER_09: Yeah, yeah.
- 1:01:05SPEAKER_01: Early Chicago was very proggy.
- 1:01:06SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 1:01:07SPEAKER_01: So yeah, I agree.
- 1:01:09SPEAKER_01: Uh I remember my um when I was in high school, my uh music teacher, his name is John Reeves.
- 1:01:14SPEAKER_01: Actually, he's played with us.
- 1:01:15SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 1:01:16SPEAKER_01: So John Reeves, when I was a f freshman in high school, uh John Reeves uh trusted me because I showed an interest in Chicago and just kind of um music in general, and and it was one of those guys that always hung out in the band room and banging away on a piano or whatever.
- 1:01:38SPEAKER_01: And so he brought in uh a Chicago album, like like an an album for me to listen to, and it was like the first one or the second one or something like that.
- 1:01:49SPEAKER_01: So take that home and listen to it.
- 1:01:50SPEAKER_01: And I listened to it and I was like, whoa, this is cool, this is cool.
- 1:01:54SPEAKER_01: So I brought it back.
- 1:01:55SPEAKER_01: He brought in a different one and then we switched.
- 1:01:58SPEAKER_01: So I think he I borrowed a couple of Chicago albums from my band director back then.
- 1:02:02SPEAKER_01: And that's huge.
- 1:02:04SPEAKER_01: I mean, when you know when your band director takes an interest and wants to kind of let you turn you on to and and then trusts you with a with an old Chicago album, you know?
- 1:02:13SPEAKER_01: Yeah, it was pretty cool.
- 1:02:14SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 1:02:15SPEAKER_09: So it kind of reminds me of the school of rock when he's like giving them homework.
- 1:02:19SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 1:02:19SPEAKER_09: He's like, here, here's yes.
- 1:02:22SPEAKER_09: Listen to the piano solo on roundabout.
- 1:02:24SPEAKER_01: Exactly.
- 1:02:25SPEAKER_01: Yeah, exactly.
- 1:02:26SPEAKER_01: Okay, so that's it.
- 1:02:27SPEAKER_01: That's episode.
- 1:02:28SPEAKER_01: What does I say?
- 1:02:29SPEAKER_01: 219?
- 1:02:30SPEAKER_01: 219.
- 1:02:31SPEAKER_01: 219.
- 1:02:33SPEAKER_01: Uh, until next time.
- 1:02:35SPEAKER_01: Let's see.
- 1:02:35SPEAKER_01: I'm gonna make sure we don't we don't have anything next week, right?
- 1:02:37SPEAKER_01: We're good?
- 1:02:38SPEAKER_01: We're gonna do a podcast next week.
- 1:02:39SPEAKER_01: Yeah, I think you're right.
- 1:02:41SPEAKER_09: I didn't say anything.
- 1:02:42SPEAKER_09: I think you're right.
- 1:02:43SPEAKER_09: Hey, we're gonna do a podcast next week.
- 1:02:45SPEAKER_09: Yeah, yeah, well, absolutely.
- 1:02:46SPEAKER_09: Yeah, yeah, you're right, dog.
- 1:02:47SPEAKER_09: Talk about that, uh, what do you think about that?
- 1:02:52SPEAKER_01: So, yeah, we'll be back next week with uh episode 220.
- 1:02:55SPEAKER_01: So until then.
- 1:02:57SPEAKER_09: Oh, happy birthday to my mom on Sunday.
- 1:03:00SPEAKER_09: Oh, we should have called her.
- 1:03:02SPEAKER_09: Well no, she's busy.
- 1:03:03SPEAKER_09: She's counting ballots.
- 1:03:04SPEAKER_09: Oh, is she a pollster?
- 1:03:06SPEAKER_09: She's counting ballots.
- 1:03:08SPEAKER_01: Is that that's not a pollster though, is it?
- 1:03:10SPEAKER_01: No, no, that's not a pollster.
- 1:03:10SPEAKER_01: No, she's just counting bolts.
- 1:03:11SPEAKER_01: She's a she's a vote vote worker or whatever.
- 1:03:13SPEAKER_01: She's just counting ballots.
- 1:03:14SPEAKER_01: Election worker, yeah.
- 1:03:15SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 1:03:15SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 1:03:16unknown: Yeah.
- 1:03:17SPEAKER_01: She counts stuff.
- 1:03:18SPEAKER_01: We're not gonna know for like she used to work at a bank.
- 1:03:20SPEAKER_01: We're not gonna know for like counting stuff.
- 1:03:22SPEAKER_01: Weeks who the president is.
- 1:03:24SPEAKER_01: Weeks.
- 1:03:25SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 1:03:26SPEAKER_01: But I bet you know we know tomorrow if the main flag stays.
- 1:03:31SPEAKER_09: It was a 99% no.
- 1:03:35SPEAKER_09: We had one dude in Portland vote for change it.
- 1:03:39SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 1:03:40SPEAKER_01: All right.
- 1:03:41SPEAKER_01: Uh till next time, I'm O'Brien.
- 1:03:43SPEAKER_09: I'm still Doug.
