- 0:22SPEAKER_00: Over the past six days, we've been through a key cycle in the creative life of a writer: preparing, planting, watering, pruning, harvesting, and celebrating.
- 0:34SPEAKER_00: This is the cycle of growth that we go through again and again as we pursue higher levels of growth.
- 0:41SPEAKER_00: In the Western world, we're used to jumping back in again right after we achieve something.
- 0:46SPEAKER_00: We live in a workaholic culture that says our value is directly tied to our output.
- 0:51SPEAKER_00: If you want to be valuable, you have to constantly produce, right?
- 0:55SPEAKER_00: Well, honestly, that's an unhealthy way to look at life.
- 0:59SPEAKER_00: And it's also a great way to get burned out.
- 1:01SPEAKER_00: The faith community has long recognized the value of resting.
- 1:05SPEAKER_00: The book of Genesis tells us that God Himself, after working so hard on the six days of creation, took time to rest.
- 1:14SPEAKER_00: If God saw fit to step back, take a look at his creative work and call it good, then take a day of rest.
- 1:22SPEAKER_00: Why do we think that we don't need a day of rest also?
- 1:25SPEAKER_00: It's important to build a day of rest into your weekly schedule.
- 1:29SPEAKER_00: Not only that, you have to rest each day by getting enough sleep, and dare we say, taking a midday nap.
- 1:35SPEAKER_00: I know that's anathema to a lot of people, but honestly, I take a nap almost every single day, sometimes too.
- 1:42SPEAKER_00: And if you do that, you're in good company because many of the world's greatest thinkers and creatives have a regular habit of napping.
- 1:49SPEAKER_00: When you rest, you're not being lazy and you're not taking a shortcut.
- 1:53SPEAKER_00: Rest is essential.
- 1:54SPEAKER_00: Sometimes the very best thing you can do for your creativity and your productivity is just to rest.
- 1:59SPEAKER_00: You're not Superman or Superwoman for that matter, and you're not God.
- 2:04SPEAKER_00: You've got to have your rest.
- 2:06SPEAKER_00: Resting might just be the single most important thing that you do today.
