Smoke Forces MPS Shutdown | Milwaukee News
Milwaukee Public Schools and all recreation sites shut down July 17th not due to heat, but because of dangerous smoke levels — forcing cancellations of all indoor and outdoor activities. Superintendent Brenda Cassellius and Health Commissioner Dr. Michael Totoraitis made the call to prioritize student and community health, including halting summer meal services. Though it’s a tough blow, the district expects this one-day closure to be short-lived, with Summer Academy still on track to end July 31st — fingers crossed the air clears soon so programs can resume.
