- 0:03This is Living Waters of Grace, the teaching ministry of Clark
- 0:08Wofford, senior pastor of Calvary Chapel of Westmoreland,
- 0:12County of Greensburg, PA. Now here's Pastor Clark as he
- 0:16continues teaching through God's Word.
- 0:37Paul says I did not know, brethren, that he was the high
- 0:40priest. For it is written, you shall not
- 0:42speak evil of a ruler of your people.
- 0:45So regardless of what Paul thought about this man's
- 0:49leadership and his call and his ability to lead, the people at
- 0:54this time didn't like him. Hypocrite, scoundrel, Pagan, all
- 1:00the different names you could put on him.
- 1:02He knew the scripture said you're not to speak evil of a
- 1:05ruler of your people. There are some pretty wicked
- 1:08leaders all around the world, men and women, who have risen to
- 1:12the top because of how low they were willing to stoop to get
- 1:15there, to be transparent. It's really pretty upsetting to
- 1:19think that these people are in charge.
- 1:22Well, in his message today, Pastor Clark teaches that
- 1:24despite what you might think of those in authority, you are to
- 1:27respect that God has placed them there.
- 1:30You don't have to like or agree with those wicked rulers, but
- 1:33you are to trust that God knows what he's doing.
- 1:36Now here's Pastor Clark in Acts chapter 23 with today's edition
- 1:41of Living Waters of Grace. We are in the book of Acts
- 1:44chapter 23. Today's message is based upon
- 1:49being in a situation as the Apostle Paul is in trouble in
- 1:53prison and a lot of hassle in Jerusalem because he sort of
- 1:58blew through the the red lights, a warning that the Lord had
- 2:01given him as to what he was to do in the days ahead in his
- 2:06ministry. And something we all can relate
- 2:08to. I think all of us have blown
- 2:10through red lights in our lives, literally.
- 2:13And the police pull us over when we do it, if they catch us.
- 2:16And also situations in life where we're going to make a
- 2:19decision and we have a decision to make.
- 2:23And sometimes we think we know what the right decision is and
- 2:27we just make it and we find out later on it wasn't the right
- 2:30decision. Has that ever happened to
- 2:31anybody? Happened to me numerous times.
- 2:34And we're supposed to get counsel at times, you know,
- 2:37whenever we have a decision that's sort of difficult.
- 2:40First of all, if you're married, you ask your spouse and pray
- 2:43about it. That's the best place to start.
- 2:46And then you might have some friends, some Christian friends,
- 2:49brothers and sisters that you can ask to pray and tell them
- 2:51you have a, a decision to make and it's difficult.
- 2:54One, you don't know what to do. Paul, in this situation, as
- 2:57we've been studying in the book of the Acts, he was told by some
- 3:01close people that were in ministry with him that he
- 3:04shouldn't go to Jerusalem. He's going to have a lot of
- 3:06problems up there and have a lot of headaches.
- 3:08And then a prophet told him as well that he shouldn't go, but
- 3:13he decided he was going to go anyway because his motive to go
- 3:17was good. He wanted to go share the gospel
- 3:19with Jewish people. But the timing wasn't right and
- 3:22the way he was going about it wasn't correct.
- 3:25And so when we study this this morning, you'll be surprised.
- 3:28I think it's some of Paul's responses.
- 3:31I'm glad these things are in the Bible because it makes us
- 3:34understand that we're all human no matter what we are, pastor,
- 3:38apostle, whatever gifting that we might have, none of us are
- 3:42beyond making mistakes, right? Because we're human.
- 3:45And we'll see how he did make mistakes and how God still used
- 3:49him. But in Psalm chapter 19, and
- 3:52this is something to think about all of us as we study this
- 3:56chapter in Acts today, it says in verse 12, who can understand
- 4:00his errors? Question mark, cleanse me from
- 4:03secret faults and keep back your servant also from presumptuous
- 4:07sins. Let them not have dominion over
- 4:10me. The presumptuous sin is to
- 4:13assume that what it is you're going to do is OK, no problems.
- 4:17You can't see your heart or the outcome ahead of time.
- 4:20And so you just forge ahead thinking that everything you're
- 4:24going to do is going to be cool and it's going to work out and
- 4:27be no problems. And then whenever there's
- 4:29problems and it doesn't work out and it causes issues in your own
- 4:32life and the lives of other people, you realize you were
- 4:35presumptuous. You know, you assumed upon the
- 4:38Lord about something that he didn't give you a green light
- 4:41for. So whenever you have a, a sense
- 4:42like, Hey, we need to do this or this is what we should do, I'd
- 4:46encourage you as I got to encourage myself, pray about it
- 4:48for a while. Wait on the Lord, give us some
- 4:50time. And then once you sense a
- 4:53clearance and feel free to move on as God gives you grace to
- 4:57move on. And then it says, the psalmist
- 5:00says this is David, and surely we all know he had some
- 5:02presumptuous sins when he ended up in the affair with Bathsheba.
- 5:07It says, let the words in my mouth and the meditation of my
- 5:10heart be acceptable in your sight, O Lord, my strength and
- 5:14my Redeemer. So the Holy Spirit, he works in
- 5:17our lives and He speaks to us in our conscience and through the
- 5:21Word and in our minds. And I hear him most of the time
- 5:26pretty loud and clear. Whether I want to hear him all
- 5:28the time, that's another story, right?
- 5:30But I know that He's always speaking and always want to
- 5:33direct me. And I want my words, the things
- 5:36that I say and the things I think about in my life to be
- 5:40pleasing to Him, to be acceptable to him because He is
- 5:44our strength and our Redeemer. So powerful section of
- 5:47Scripture. Psalm 19, the whole Psalm.
- 5:49You can review it, but you can make that your own prayer.
- 5:52Lord, keep me back from making stupid decisions that are going
- 5:56to affect myself and others in my testimony and a very, you
- 6:02know, not cool way. So that is the foundation I
- 6:05wanted to sort of share before we look at the the book of Acts,
- 6:10Proverbs 21 two says every way of a man is right in his own
- 6:14eyes, but the Lord weighs his the hearts.
- 6:17So lots of times we think what we're going to do is no problem,
- 6:20no issues. And and then we find out later
- 6:23that there was a big issue because we we weren't listening
- 6:27and we weren't paying attention. So we're going to go to Acts
- 6:29now. Acts chapter 23, if you have
- 6:31your Bibles, but Acts chapter 23, let's pray.
- 6:35Father, we thank you, Lord, for assembling us together here
- 6:38today as brothers and sisters in Christ.
- 6:40And Lord God, speak to all of us about what it is you want us to
- 6:44consider today. Maybe some of us are on verges
- 6:47of decisions or doing things that we are maybe not well
- 6:51advised over from you and from our closest friends.
- 6:56Lord, give us wisdom. We need wisdom from you to know
- 6:58how to live this life every day to make the right choices.
- 7:02So Lord, may your blessing be upon your body, your bride, your
- 7:06sheep. Feed us Lord, from your word by
- 7:09your Holy Spirit. And we ask these things in Jesus
- 7:12name, Amen. So Acts 23.
- 7:15I'm going to read the first 10 verses and then make some
- 7:18comments. Well, I'm going to start with
- 7:19first 30 the next day. This is the previous chapter.
- 7:23This leaves into 23 the next day.
- 7:25Because he wanted to know for certain why he was accused by
- 7:29the Jews, he released him from his bonds and commanded the
- 7:32chief priest on all the council to appear, and brought Paul down
- 7:37and set him before them. Then Paul, looking at earnestly
- 7:40at the council, said men and brother.
- 7:43And I have lived in a good conscience before God until this
- 7:46day. And the high priest Ananias
- 7:49commanded those who stood by him to strike him on the mouth.
- 7:53Then Paul said to him, God will strike you, you whitewashed law,
- 7:57for you sit to judge me according to the law, and do not
- 8:00command me to be struck contrary to the law.
- 8:03And those who stood by said, Do you revile God's high priest?
- 8:07And Paul said, I did not know, brother, and that he was the
- 8:10high priest. For it is written, you shall not
- 8:12speak evil of a ruler of your people.
- 8:15But when Paul perceived that one part were Sadducees and the
- 8:19other Pharisees, he cried out in the council.
- 8:22Men and brethren, I'm a Pharisee, the son of a Pharisee.
- 8:26Concerning the hope and resurrection of the dead, I am
- 8:28being judged. And when he had said this, a
- 8:30dissension arose between the Pharisees and the Sadducees, and
- 8:34the assembly was divided. For Sadducees say there was no
- 8:37resurrection and no Angel or spirit, but the Pharisees
- 8:41confessed both. Then there arose a lot outcry,
- 8:45and the scribes of the Pharisees party arose and protested,
- 8:48saying, We find no evil in this man, but if a spirit or an Angel
- 8:52has spoken to him, let us not fight against God.
- 8:55Now when there arose a great dissension, the commander,
- 8:58fearing lest Paul might be pulled to pieces by them,
- 9:01commanded the soldiers to get down and take him by force, and
- 9:05among them bring him in to the barracks.
- 9:08So Paul's intention of going to Jerusalem was to be able to
- 9:11preach and and share the gospel and tell people about their need
- 9:15of Jesus Christ, specifically the Jewish people, that they
- 9:18might understand and believe that Jesus Christ is the Messiah
- 9:22that was prophesized throughout the Old Testament, had come and
- 9:25was crucified, buried and rose again on the third day.
- 9:30So now he's in a different setting here.
- 9:32They're moving him to another group of people, the Sanhedrin.
- 9:36This is a 70 or 71 Jewish leaders who rule according to
- 9:40the Law of Moses to make decisions on judgment upon
- 9:44people was made-up of Pharisees and Sadducees.
- 9:48Pharisees were the conservative branch of the Sanhedrin, and the
- 9:52Sadducees would be considered the liberal branch.
- 9:54The Pharisees believed in a literal resurrection from the
- 9:58dead. The Sadducees did not believe
- 10:00that the body had a spirit or there was a literal
- 10:04resurrection, that when you die, you just die.
- 10:07So they were sort of at odds to begin with, but somehow they
- 10:10rolled together. So Paul's looking at them and
- 10:12he's thinking in his mind, how can I get these people to listen
- 10:16to me? That was his whole focus.
- 10:18So he says, men and brethren, He's calling them brethren
- 10:21because Paul used to be a member of the Sanhedrin.
- 10:24Paul was a Pharisee of Pharisees before he got born again, before
- 10:27he got saved on the road to Damascus.
- 10:30He persecuted Christians, he hated the movement of God, the
- 10:33way Christianity did not accept Jesus Christ didn't believe, and
- 10:38until the Lord got ahold of him personally and he did become a
- 10:41believer. But he's trying to not flatter
- 10:44them, but find a way of entry into having an opportunity of a
- 10:48conversation. And he says I've lived in all
- 10:51good conscience before God until this day.
- 10:54Now that came across, I'm sure to the leaders as well as the
- 11:00big shot here that got upset with him, the high priest that
- 11:05who in the world can honestly say that they've lived in all
- 11:10good conscience before God until this day.
- 11:13I don't know about you, but sometimes my conscience isn't
- 11:15good. I'm sure yours isn't either.
- 11:18But Paul being apostle, boy, God was so upon this guy and
- 11:22anointing him in such an intense way that he kept him on the
- 11:25straight and narrow and on a very, very short leash because
- 11:29he was responsible for so much of the beginning of the New
- 11:32Testament church and also writing the scriptures that God
- 11:35had given him for us to read as we're reading now.
- 11:39So he's saying that his life was in good place spiritually
- 11:43according to the law and according to the Gospel.
- 11:47The high priest hears this Ananias, and this Ananias is a
- 11:51bad dude. He's not a good leader.
- 11:53He's a scoundrel actually. He's hateful, he's vindictive,
- 11:57he's godless. And he commands those who are
- 12:00standing by Paul to strike him on the mouth just to, to start
- 12:04beating him, which is illegal. You, you can't do that, let
- 12:07alone with a Roman citizen. First of all, there's no crime
- 12:11that he's committed. All he's doing obviously at this
- 12:13point in time is offending this guy's ego.
- 12:16And then Paul says to him, God will strike you, you whitewashed
- 12:20wall, for you sit to judge me according to the law and do not
- 12:24command me to be struck contrary to the law.
- 12:27So that wasn't a good way to start out when friends and
- 12:29influence people in a conversation before the
- 12:32authorities, right? He's antagonizing this high
- 12:35priest and everything he said is obviously true.
- 12:38But Paul responded out of an emotion that made him angry.
- 12:43Now, Jesus, whenever he was hit on the mouth, he didn't respond
- 12:48this way. Matter of fact, Jesus didn't
- 12:50open his mouth most of the time whenever he was being harassed,
- 12:54something we can learn from. But Paul not being God,
- 12:57obviously, and neither are we. When we get in a situation we
- 13:01don't like and we think it's unfair, we're going to fight to
- 13:03the end to prove that we're innocent.
- 13:06And Paul wasn't going to take any guff from these people or
- 13:09from this high priest. And so he basically says
- 13:13something to him that he's a hypocrite.
- 13:15Now, when I was in Israel and I saw the tombs and I was on the
- 13:19Mount of Olives and looking down, I remember Jesus talking
- 13:23about the Pharisees being like whitewashed sefalickers.
- 13:26In other words, the tombs, they look really clean and beautiful
- 13:29on the outside, but inside they were full of dead man's bones
- 13:33and corruption. And I'll never forget that.
- 13:35When I looked down and saw that, it just, you know, resonated and
- 13:38reminded me of that because they look beautiful, but inside they
- 13:41were just full of nothing but broken lives and dust and souls
- 13:46that will unfortunately be on their way to a Christ less
- 13:49eternity in hell because they never believed that Jesus was
- 13:52the Christ. But what's happening here is
- 13:55that Paul is tying him into this dead religion and this false
- 14:01leadership he had that he's contrary and he's judging
- 14:06unrighteously now. This guy eventually was caught
- 14:09up couple years later before Rome was sacked and the Jewish
- 14:14people had to scatter. But the Jewish people did find
- 14:17this guy and eventually assassinate him.
- 14:21So eventually he was judged for his crime of godless leadership
- 14:25in government. And it says in verse 4, and
- 14:27those who stood by said, do you revile God's high priest?
- 14:31So first of all, this was an impromptu meeting.
- 14:34And so there wasn't any kind of regalia and robes and all that
- 14:37kind of stuff. And him sitting on a throne like
- 14:39some big shot. He came in, sat there talking,
- 14:42listening, and Paul wasn't even aware that the high priest was
- 14:45there. And this is interesting.
- 14:47In verse 5, Paul says, I did not know, brethren, that he was the
- 14:51high priest. For it is written, you should
- 14:53not speak evil of a ruler of your people.
- 14:56So regardless of what Paul thought about this man's
- 15:00leadership and his call and his ability to lead the people at
- 15:05this time, then like him, hypocrite, scoundrel, Pagan, all
- 15:10the different names you could put on him, he knew the
- 15:13scripture said you're not to speak evil of a roller of your
- 15:16people. Now I wonder how many pleasant
- 15:19things you or I have thought or said about Joe Biden lately.
- 15:26He's making a lot of crazy moves, isn't he?
- 15:29Yet he's the president of our country.
- 15:33He was elected. Whether you think he was elected
- 15:35fairly or unfairly, it's not the point.
- 15:37The point is God has appointed him to be the president right
- 15:40now. Now, I don't like it any more
- 15:42than anybody else, but he's our president.
- 15:45So I'm convicted. Like, do I pray for him?
- 15:49I'm commanded to pray for those who are in authority that the
- 15:52Lord would work in his heart, that he would cause him to come
- 15:56to some kind of reasoning in his mind to realize that the
- 15:58legislation that he's making is causing us not to be 1 nation
- 16:03under God anymore, but one nation under humanism and this
- 16:08immorality and this disgusting agendas.
- 16:11Every time we turn around some kind of new things coming down.
- 16:15So we're not. We'll have to be real careful,
- 16:18all of us. And I'm telling you about
- 16:20myself, doesn't matter who's in office or who you like, who you
- 16:24don't like, you need to pray for those who are in office.
- 16:27That's our responsibility as Christians and we need to do
- 16:30that. And maybe if we began to do
- 16:32that, maybe there would be some changes in our nation because
- 16:37that man needs God's mercy, just like you and I do.
- 16:40And there was times in our lives that we probably were worse than
- 16:44the way Joe Biden acts or lives perhaps.
- 16:47But this is a very clear statement that Paul said you
- 16:52shall not speak evil of the ruler of your people.
- 16:55In verse 6 it says but when Paul perceived that one part where
- 17:01Sadducees and other Pharisees, he cried out in the council men
- 17:06and brethren, I'm a Pharisee. He was proud to say that he was
- 17:11a Pharisee. He was a son of a Pharisee
- 17:13concerning the hope of the resurrection of that I'm being
- 17:15judged. So all Paul's wanting people to
- 17:18know is that Christ rose again from dead.
- 17:20Amen. But Paul's whole focus was to
- 17:23let these people know the good news that there's life after
- 17:26death, there's forgiveness of our sins, and that we can
- 17:29believe on Christ as our Messiah and have the promise of
- 17:33everlasting life and never die. That's good news, right?
- 17:36And they're wanting to silence Him.
- 17:39Now what's interesting here is that when He said that the
- 17:42dissension began to occur in verse 7.
- 17:44And when He said this, the dissension arose between the
- 17:47Pharisees and the Sadducees, and the assembly was divided.
- 17:50Now He wasn't intentionally trying to cause some kind of
- 17:53uproar, but He was just stating a case relating to what his past
- 17:58was and the need for them to understand that there is a
- 18:01resurrection where the Pharisees were wow, Amen.
- 18:05That's what we believe that too. But the Sadducees in verse 8 say
- 18:09there is no resurrection and no Angel or spirit, but the
- 18:13Pharisees confess or believe both.
- 18:16Then there arose a lot outcry and the scribes and the
- 18:18Pharisees party arose in protest and saying we find no evil in
- 18:22this man. So now the Pharisees are
- 18:24supporting Paul. There's really no crime he's
- 18:27committed. There's no reason for him to be
- 18:29in chains or to be smacked around or to be persecuted right
- 18:33now. Absolutely none.
- 18:35And they're admitting there is no evil in him.
- 18:38And so let's let it go. If an Angel or a spirit had
- 18:43spoken to him and gave him this other revelation, they're saying
- 18:46let us not fight against God. So now, when there arose of
- 18:50great dissension, the commander, fearing lest Paul might be
- 18:53pulled to pieces by them, commanded the soldiers to go
- 18:56down and take him by force from among them and bring him into
- 19:00the barracks. So this was getting dangerous.
- 19:01I mean, there was a big outroar here.
- 19:04There was a potential here of murder upon Paul, and so they
- 19:07had to get him out of there. It was this mass confusion.
- 19:11So here's Paul. Now think about this.
- 19:14It's like your greatest opportunity to share your faith
- 19:17with your family, maybe on a holiday or someone you work with
- 19:21and, and you think the timing's perfect and it's all set up and
- 19:24you're just praying it's going to go well.
- 19:26And you got all the verses lined up and you got your testimony
- 19:29ready and you begin to tell the people about what Jesus has done
- 19:33for you and it falls on deaf ears.
- 19:36They begin to yell at you or complain or they don't want to
- 19:40hear it. They bring up all your flaws and
- 19:43faults that you've had in your life and saying, who are you to
- 19:46say that you're a Christian? When you did this or you acted
- 19:49this way, you said that and you know what it's like and you
- 19:52would be deflated, right? You would be discouraged.
- 19:54You had the chance to tell them and it seemed like it didn't
- 19:58work out. Like, Lord, why?
- 20:00I really practice. I was really prepared and my
- 20:04intention and my desire was to really be a blessing.
- 20:07And this is a mess. I've made a complete mess out of
- 20:10all this. Now if Paul would have listened
- 20:12to the people in regards to not going up to Jerusalem right now,
- 20:15all this wouldn't have gone down this way.
- 20:18But keep in mind that the Lord says all things work together
- 20:21for good to those who love him and are called according to his
- 20:24purpose. So in your life and mine, the
- 20:28things that we've done or situations where we shared our
- 20:31faith that it's just been a complete bust is never in vain
- 20:35because the Lord promises His Word won't return void if people
- 20:40laugh at you or scoff at you or reject you or ridicule you
- 20:44because of what it is you believe and what you're
- 20:46committed to in your life. We should distrust God in that
- 20:50even though it didn't work out, we wish it would work out
- 20:52better, right? But sometimes it doesn't.
- 20:56And that's the mystery of life. God causes all things to work
- 21:00out according to the counsel of His own will, not my will or
- 21:03your will. His will be done right.
- 21:06So we're to be obedient to do what he tells us to do,
- 21:09regardless of the potential consequences, especially in
- 21:12regard to sharing our faith or standing up for our faith.
- 21:15But Paul is, I'm sure, discouraged now.
- 21:17He's in this prison. It's not a pleasant place to be.
- 21:21And this isn't verse 11. But the following night, the
- 21:23Lord stood by him and said, now the Lord is faithful to be with
- 21:28us in our failings. He's not like people who will
- 21:32reject us and tell us we're worthless or we're disqualified.
- 21:36Or, you know, the Lord is the God of the second chance, the
- 21:40third chance, the fifth chance, the 100th chance.
- 21:42He never gives up on us. He always comes to us to assure
- 21:48us and to encourage us and to love on us.
- 21:49He doesn't come to revile us or to condemn us or to judge us as
- 21:54his kids. He's a loving father and he
- 21:56knows how to minister to us. He knew Paul felt like a
- 21:58failure. He knew Paul had the heads up
- 22:01not to go. And Jesus didn't say, well, the
- 22:03reason this has happened is because you didn't listen,
- 22:06right? Like I would as a parent, I'd
- 22:09say to my kids, if you wouldn't have done that, like I told you,
- 22:12you shouldn't, this wouldn't have happened.
- 22:14That's not the best way to minister to your kids.
- 22:17You should try to figure out a different way to get to them,
- 22:19right? But we're all the same way.
- 22:21That's how we all act. And it's just, you know, self
- 22:23righteousness or being judges or whatever.
- 22:26But this is the Lord here. He says to him, be of good
- 22:29cheer. Paul's down in the dumps, be of
- 22:31good cheer. You got to be kidding me.
- 22:35This is how God loves us. And he says Paul, for as you
- 22:39have testified for me in Jerusalem, and he didn't give an
- 22:42attitude of how well it went or how bad it went.
- 22:45He just said you testified for me in Jerusalem.
- 22:48That meant something. So you must also bear witness at
- 22:51Rome, and Paul's greatest desire was to eventually get the room
- 22:55before he died to share. Paul loved being in the big
- 22:58cities and seeing the architecture and reading about
- 23:01the artwork and meeting all the interesting people.
- 23:03He loved the sightsee and he was a Taurus.
- 23:06But he was also an apostle and whenever he went into a city he
- 23:10wanted to become all things to all men that he might win some.
- 23:13He tried to have start up conversations to be able to find
- 23:15a place of relating with people on their term as opposed to
- 23:19speaking down to him. He was just that way and
- 23:22something we can learn by his methodology and evangelism.
- 23:25He didn't pound people on the head like many of us have done
- 23:28at times. And so he's encouraging Paul and
- 23:32I pray today, wherever you're at and spiritual and walking and
- 23:36life and circumstances and things that don't seem to be
- 23:39working out right the way you'd like them to, but the Lord's
- 23:42coming alongside of you telling you to be a good sheer, don't be
- 23:47discouraged. Don't be dismissed for your
- 23:52Lord, Your God is with you wherever you go.
- 23:57We're so glad you joined us today on this edition of Living
- 24:00Waters of Grace. Pastor Clark is teaching through
- 24:03the Book of Acts, which is the only book that chronicles the
- 24:06history of the early church immediately after Jesus's
- 24:10ascension. It gives us a front row seat to
- 24:13how the Gospel began to move outwards, starting in Jerusalem
- 24:17and reaching into the heart of the Roman Empire.
- 24:20In just three decades, a small group of frightened ordinary
- 24:24believers became a bold, spirit empowered movement that
- 24:27transformed the known world. Acts is not just a history
- 24:32lesson. It's a reminder of what God can
- 24:34do when His people are surrendered, obedient and filled
- 24:38with the Holy Spirit. Their perseverance still
- 24:41inspires us today. May we follow their example and
- 24:46live faithfully for Christ in our own time.
- 24:49We hope today's message encouraged you.
