- 2:47Text three or four nine three five five zero zero eight. Well, we've
- 2:52all heard about the problem of youth sports, particularly parents and grandparents in youth
- 2:57sports, from the little leagues the high school. It's it's insane. Last
- 3:01week, a grandfather here in West Virginia was arrested after pulling a knife on
- 3:07a little league umpire, threatening to quote gut him right here. All right,
- 3:14do we lose our caller there? Okay? Is he still there?
- 3:16Well? All right? Someone who knows a lot about this is Logan High
- 3:21baseball and girls basketball coach Kevin Gertz Couch Gertz and I had Coach Kurtz had
- 3:27simply had enough, and he took to social media to talk about it last
- 3:31week in a rant on Facebook, and I'm going to paraphrase some of the
- 3:35posts before bringing in coach. Coach Girtz said, a few bad eggs from
- 3:39our fan base are making our programs look bad. Editorial note here he was
- 3:44referring to my alma matern Logan High. But you can just as easily substitute
- 3:49Capital, Winfield, South Charleston, Herrican any of those in the mix there.
- 3:54Back to the rant, I apologize to our opposing teams that have to
- 3:59come man and have to listen to the vulgar and disgraceful language from the fans
- 4:02on the bridge of the baseball field. It's a complete embarrassment. And he
- 4:06went on to apologize to some recent visitors to the baseball field, the teams,
- 4:10to fans, et cetera, continuing, if this is you, please
- 4:13stay home. We don't want fans like you. Coach Girts joined us right
- 4:15now. Coach Girts, good morning, how are you sir? Good morning,
- 4:18Dave. How are you doing. I'm doing fine, Thanks for being
- 4:21here. A lot to unpack here, and based on your Facebook rant last
- 4:27week, which I've posted on Dave and radio and Facebook, you just had
- 4:30enough, Coach. Well, it's just, you know, it's everywhere I
- 4:34go. If I coach a game, if I go watch a game,
- 4:40it doesn't have to be a high school game. It can be a little
- 4:43league game, it can be a middle school game, it can be you
- 4:45know whatever, people outside the plane field or getting company, you know,
- 4:51completely out of control. And it's been on this spiral for a few years.
- 4:57Yeah, I've got no problem with passing folding to your team, but
- 5:01degrading others is absolutely ridiculous. And it's not just degrading the other team,
- 5:06it's degrading the other fans. I've got messages from you know, lifelong friends
- 5:15and they say, you know, and it's making Logan look bad because I
- 5:18am the one speaking up, but it is the other teams as well,
- 5:24the other schools. And it's crazy. We went and played basketball on the
- 5:30road and one of our better players went down with the torn acl and the
- 5:38and it was being laughed at on the by the opposing sharing section. And
- 5:44that's ridiculous. And not to say that it wouldn't have happened here, but
- 5:49these small town rivalries are getting way out of control that you know, it's
- 5:55just hatred in our society anymore. And it's ridiculous. And and Coach,
- 6:02this is a thing that is not you know, you are the coach of
- 6:06the baseball and girls basketball team at Logan High School. Uh, but this
- 6:11goes on everywhere. As you said, this injury to this player happened at
- 6:15another school and and and nine times. You know, Okay, kids are
- 6:18gonna be kids. We we we all know that we were all there.
- 6:20You and I went to high school together. We we know how some kids
- 6:25but a lot of times what you're talking about, these aren't students, Coach,
- 6:28these are adults, these are grown rear end adults. And then it's
- 6:35it's just out of control, when it's embarrassing and it's driving. You know,
- 6:42I talked to a couple of different news stations just driving umpires out,
- 6:47but this driving toaches out. I don't know how much longer I have because
- 6:55of a situation that happened to me three months ago. But I can tell
- 7:00you one thing. I cannot continue to be around this negativity that's uh that's
- 7:06going on. And uh, you know, I consider myself a very good
- 7:11coach. I love being with kids, but you know, having to deal
- 7:16with stuff outside of what I'm in charge of, and that's this year.
- 7:24It was twenty six young men, it was fifteen young women, and it's
- 7:30just it's ridiculous. You know, when people are thrown out of World basketball
- 7:36games that you don't have the crowds of more than a couple of hundreds,
- 7:42it's crazy. And you know, something needs to be done where if you
- 7:48act that big of a pole in years taken out, maybe you don't come
- 7:54back to the rest of the seasoning the fool year. Well, and I
- 7:58got a coach, I got a text to the showy said why don't school
- 8:01administrators who are at these games remove the rude fans? And they do in
- 8:05many cases, but like you said, they just come back to the next
- 8:07game. Maybe we need to look at a season long suspension or hell,
- 8:11a lifetime suspension. I've got no problem with that. You know, if
- 8:15you can't come to a sporting event and act right, I mean, I've
- 8:20got no problems if something happens and you know I call that you don't agree
- 8:24with you boo Okay, I don't do something right, you boo me.
- 8:30Okay, I've got no problem with that. But just the absolute you know,
- 8:37becker and back and forth and wanting to fight and that kind of stuff.
- 8:41I saw it three or four times. And our baseball games this year
- 8:48that I've never really seen it. I saw it a half a dozen times.
- 8:52And our girls basketball I see it all the time, and our boys
- 8:56basketball, and you know, it happens with what in every sport I go
- 9:01watch. My grandson played a week or show ago, and Daddy's taken out
- 9:07of that nine and ten year old game. Are you kidding me? What
- 9:13are you? You know you mentioned adults and the and the Facebook grant from
- 9:18my head was about a couple of our students that don't even play baseball,
- 9:24has never played baseball, acting pools. But then adults on the other side
- 9:31that stuff too. Then and and and that got out of hand. And
- 9:37I can see if you say something to a kid I teach, and you
- 9:41say something to a kid in school, they're lay the fireback at and it's
- 9:46ridiculous. I don't know what we're teaching our kids. Well, we're not
- 9:50teaching them, I think. Coach, that's the problem. Again, we're
- 9:52talking with Kevin Gart, Susie baseball coach at look at high school and also
- 9:56the girls basketball coaching. The problem with the out of control of fans at
- 10:00sporting events. You know, your dad, Roger Gart, somebody, I
- 10:03think a lot of um you know, iconic coach in West Virginia. You
- 10:07guys have been living in breathing sports. You were born into it. Uh.
- 10:11And again we don't want this is not a southern West Virginia problem.
- 10:15I mean this this goes on everywhere. Go ahead, coaching. That's the
- 10:20national problem. Sure it is. It doesn't matter where you go. And
- 10:26and I'm not kind to me, bad play news media, but you know
- 10:33it's it's everywhere. That you see on the news and then I mean and
- 10:37it's from different states, from somewhere completely away, and and people see this
- 10:46and I parmally believe this. You know, somebody watches the news to see
- 10:50this. Hell, I can do better. I can make a bigger story.
- 10:56And I did something as a fan, you know, a thousand miles
- 11:01away. And it's unbelievable what our society has come to. And it's like
- 11:09we trying to outdo somebody. That's and social media, as you know,
- 11:13plays a lot of it. You're you're right, I mean, the media
- 11:16is of which I'm a member, or we're not without blaming um and absolutely
- 11:22and I'm not blaming them, but you know you said social media in schools
- 11:28and not here, but just anywhere. Kids put a plan together, Hey
- 11:33i'm gonna do this, and let's video show everybody, and then the next
- 11:39group of somewhere else tries to outdo them and tries to outdo them, and
- 11:41that that's what this looks like it's coming to. And it's it's just crazy.
- 11:48You know, you ought to be able to come out and watch the
- 11:50ball game and enjoy yourselves, because these kids are busting their tails to be
- 11:54the very best they can. And uh, you know, I know we
- 11:58are at Logan High. I know they are Chapmanville Regional. I know they
- 12:03are scot I know they are Winfield. I know they are at Jefferson County.
- 12:07I know they are a Bridgeports. Every year these schools go, these
- 12:11teams go into it wanting to play for a title. We've been fortunate enough
- 12:16to win to the last previous who is and most people thought that we would
- 12:20do it again this year. We've got to beat I mean that that's part
- 12:24I wintil I played us in the region and that's fine to dandy. You
- 12:31know, am I happy about it? But that's what sports is about.
- 12:37NBA Miami Heaton number eight team one of the NBA Finals. Should they be
- 12:41there on paper not? But they've worked just as hard as anybody else to
- 12:48get there. And that's what these kids do. And two of the works
- 12:52the hardest most of the time, come out to be the winners. Go
- 12:56support them, support to schools. You know, we all want that,
- 13:01but we just kind of want what's been going along with it? Yeah,
- 13:05all with coach Kevin gertz Um, you know, apparently coach this Facebook rant
- 13:09that you didn't get I posted on Dave on the radio. Last time I
- 13:11checked, that post had been shared nationwide something like five hundred times. A
- 13:16lot of people who have no idea who you are or where West Virginia is.
- 13:22Some good fans. And here's the thing, Kevin, I think a
- 13:24lot of good fans and a lot of good parents are probably just as disgusted
- 13:28about this too, because you know, most people do show up at the
- 13:33games and they as as coach Crosby there Man High School said, his quote
- 13:37was show up, get a hot dog and or coke, and have a
- 13:41good time. Stop acting like fools with officials, coaches and kids, no
- 13:46umpires, trying to cheat your team. And he went on to say plenty
- 13:48more so. Apparently some other coaches are on board. A lot of them
- 13:50are on board with this too. But the majority of fans, coach,
- 13:54are people who just show up, like coach Crosby designed there, they just
- 13:56want to come up and they want to cheer on their kids. It's the
- 14:00grandkids, kids in it from the community. But it's these others that are
- 14:03freaking killing it for everybody else. Coach. Yeah, and it's sad,
- 14:09you know. And and I had no idea I had that many shares and
- 14:13that it was I haven't looked since I posted that. I haven't really been
- 14:18back on it. Maybe the next day, but I haven't been on sin.
- 14:22But and I'm not doing this to try to get my name out there,
- 14:28but I am well known in estateful the coaching I do, and I'm
- 14:33hoping that my voice doesn't get me fired, but it helps the fire change.
- 14:39Well, then that was gonna be the that's gonna be the thing I
- 14:41was gonna close with. Coach is um So, how do we fix it?
- 14:46I know that's the that's a sixty four thousand dollars question. But how
- 14:48exactly do we fix this? I don't know. I have talked a few
- 14:54coaches, you know. Right now, I'm only talking to baseball coaches because
- 14:58that's what we're in. But I've got, you know, a bunch of
- 15:03basketball contacts. I don't have football contacts, but I do. I know
- 15:09how to get a hold of a certain people. I would love to meet
- 15:13somewhere this summer bridday or two in a neutral area and discuss this. And
- 15:20you know you're not going to have a stake life policy. Maybe you will.
- 15:24I don't know, but to try to get this calm down or you're
- 15:28going to stop it completely. No you, I mean, you can't control
- 15:33what people do, but maybe you can control them never coming back. And
- 15:37I've got no with Lifetime band. Ye. The people change, sure they
- 15:43change, but they don't always change for the better. You know, a
- 15:48lot of these people that are doing this I have the utmost respect for,
- 15:54but they just snap, you know, at a certain moment, and it
- 15:56makes them look bad and other people's eyes forever. And but then you have
- 16:04some that come out and do this daily. And the kids that I was
- 16:08talking about, they did this in basketball, they did this in girls basketball,
- 16:15they do it in baseball. If that's the only reason you're coming to
- 16:18these events is to put the look on you get and getting taken out of
- 16:25a gym, it's like the highest or the highest thing of respect to them
- 16:30as a high school kid social media, and that's just what ignorant. Let
- 16:37me ask you this and then we're I gotta let you go. But all
- 16:40right, so when you're in this case, you aren't talking about students.
- 16:42Why can't these students be expelled? I mean, I'm not talking about kicked
- 16:45down the gym. I'm talking about out for the year. You're a teacher.
- 16:48Why can't that happen? I don't know. Uh, you know where
- 16:53this happens. At the rant that I was making it. I mean,
- 16:59you've been you've graduated from here. You know how the island works. Ballfield
- 17:04is in the back corner, and there is a bridge that connects Middleburg Island
- 17:11to what we call Slattown. That's where I grew up at bridge as a
- 17:15public As a public bridge, we can't stop people from going on Washington game.
- 17:23So these people, they're not even buying a ticket. And I know
- 17:26exactly, of course I'm from there. What you're talking about. They're not
- 17:29buying a ticket. You know, the majority or not. Now I'm not
- 17:32saying some don't or something haven't bought ticket and watch it from back there,
- 17:37because I'm sure. I mean, I coach every game, so I don't
- 17:40know where. But you know that has to be the greatest view, right
- 17:45behind home plate when I go to scout, I said, right behind the
- 17:48home plate so I can see everything. You know, we will do something
- 17:52as a baseball program to help alleviate that. Next year you want to stand
- 17:56back there, You're not gonna be able to see, but we're putting stuff
- 18:00up to block that view. It's gonna cost us several hundred dollars. But
- 18:07in two games, as many people as we have on that bridge, if
- 18:11those people have to come out and pay, that pays for this well.
- 18:15And so if we work on the kids, hopefully we can work on the
- 18:18parents next. Hey, coach, I gotta leave it there. I'm over
- 18:19time. I appreciate you joined us man doing good stuff. Thanks a lot,
- 18:22coach, Thank you, David all Right, Coach Kevin Gartz of my
- 18:26alma mater. Look in high school. It's nine twenty six. Just as
- 18:30a follow up here, and I'm like, coach, I don't know what
- 18:33the answer is any more than Coach Gertz or others do, but I agree,
- 18:38kick the fans out if you have to. It's been done before.
- 18:42Give the crowd one morning when they start doing things like this, and then
- 18:47you clear out the whole stadium. You clear out the whole stadium, and
- 18:51you look at the and I know what he's talking about was a situation with
- 18:53students, but he's also talking about situation with parents or grandparents or whatever.
- 19:00Kick everybody out, just say you aren't allowed here. This is for the
- 19:03kids anyway, Granny, this is not for you, so get them out
- 19:07of them all right. MANO got a couple of text We're way over time
- 19:11here, Sorry about that, Ryan Texas David. Some moral and social decay
- 19:15of our society today. Fans that can't behave themselves that these games need to
- 19:19be thrown out. If this is continuous in fraction, they need to be
- 19:23banned for life. West Virginia SSAC needs to step in and come up with
- 19:26policies that address this ignorant behavior. Thanks Dave, Texas Dave. Studies show
- 19:33that people who are obnoxious and degrading at youth sporting events are primarily Philadelphia Eagles
- 19:37fans. I think it goes beyond that final text before we go to break.
- 19:41This is not says a text or a logan issue. It's a society
- 19:45issue. Good job, coach, Thanks for standing up for what is right
- 19:48and thanks for volunteering your time to enrich these kids lives. All right,

- 23:55a little time, or you're walking there on a beautiful day or beautiful union
- 23:57like we have coming up, and you just pick up a golf club yep,
- 24:00pick up a golf clubs and that's Adelphia Taylor Books Art Emporium or turning
- 24:07the table Taylor. So we have putters and balls. You just go ahead
- 24:11and pick them up, go play however many holes you want. You can
- 24:14start wherever you want. You don't have to start at whole number one,
- 24:18and then return the putter and the ball. And now if you lose the
- 24:22ball sometimes the balls, we'll go out into the street. Let the ball
- 24:25go, go get another ball. So how exactly do you lay all this
- 24:32out? I mean, what goes into this? Well this I learned about
- 24:34at a conference that I had attended and it was done down in Alabama.
- 24:37So I reached out to them and I thought, you know what, we
- 24:41have some pretty wide sidewalks in downtown Charles and I don't think this would be
- 24:44really fun. Brought it back to a little committee and they're like, yes,
- 24:47let's do it. Let's do it. So we got them dimensions for
- 24:51the putters. We have ELL's Eyes and Tease Move all three different sizes,
- 24:56and we have the base of the the put put whole bill and it is
- 25:00built in a partnership with Ben Franklin Career and Technicals. That's great. You
- 25:06know, they have workforce or our workplace simulation projects and they have a construction
- 25:11program there, so we contract with them and they build them for so it
- 25:15becomes a great opportunity for the students to learn and then a great opportunity to
- 25:21showcase their work. So we build the blanks and they're basically just blank,
- 25:26and then the organizations or the businesses will come pick it up and they decorate
- 25:30it however they want. They do all the finishing touches to it and some
- 25:36of the some of the holes are just amazing, absolutely amazing. And we
- 25:41do provide three awards. We have a best Overall Best Representation for business or
- 25:47organization and then most fun to play. And how long is this going to
- 25:51be going on? It starts noon on June first, and then it ends
- 25:53on June twenty first, so it's like a I mean, in effect,
- 25:57it's almost like a month long tournament basically. Yeah. And the first year
- 26:03that we did it was when Shawnee Park opened and they had all of those
- 26:07national soccer tournaments going on, and it was just amazing to see the streets
- 26:11filled with all those different soccer jerseys from all over the country and their families
- 26:17just that they're really, really enjoying it. What's the response been to this
- 26:21in the past, you said, this is the six or seventh year.
- 26:22What's the response been in the past. Tremendous. I mean, we have
- 26:26twenty nine holes, and you know, regular courses only eighteen holes. But
- 26:32we kept getting people, Oh, we really want to do it, we
- 26:33really want to do it, so we keep adding and adding an adding.
- 26:37I'd say twenty nine thirties probably about the max. Yeah, because after that
- 26:40you're going to end up on sixty four. And then that's not a situation
- 26:44anybody wants. Well, and you get to buy in from the business community,
- 26:47as you said too, and that's a big part of it, because
- 26:48you know, without them, this doesn't happen, and this is designed to
- 26:52benefit them, that's right, because they're able to showcase their organization. And
- 26:56of course we do have two sponsors that off set a lot of the cost
- 27:00for this West Virginia American Water and Mountain Care Network, So we want to
- 27:03be sure and thank them for their sponsorship because it's only for to pick up
- 27:08a brand new hole. It's only two hundred and fifty dollars. So any
- 27:11business organization can pay two hundred fifty dollars and have their representation out there on
- 27:17the street for almost a month and they just contact you know, the Alliance
- 27:21from information on that we're actually sold out this year. Okay, all right,
- 27:26but yeah we have. We haven't started this year, but we will
- 27:30do that right after this wraps up. Okay, but you'll notice. I
- 27:33mean, the one thing that we do tell the business and organizations that prepare
- 27:37the holes is you've got to make it. I use the term bomb proof
- 27:41because you've got weather and you've children, and I mean we want the children
- 27:45out there, but they will trample all over the holes. I mean,
- 27:48they want to get down close, they want to look at them, and
- 27:52so they get a lot of wear and tear. So we're always like,
- 27:53glue doesn't work. You've got to nail it. Screw it, You've got
- 27:57to you know, really secure to that wood platform. Okay, we'll get
- 28:02back to this in just a couple of moments because I want to get some
- 28:03influence some other things going on. Susie Salisbury again for the charleson Ay alliances
- 28:07with it all right, So summer is unofficially here with all apologies of love
- 28:12and spoonful hot time. Summer in the city. Lots going on in the
- 28:15capital city, not just this this summer. You guys are right in the
- 28:18middle of all of it. Oh yeah, yeah, You've got the Pride
- 28:22Week happening this week, so there's gonna be all kinds of action going on
- 28:26all throughout the city. Festival of course, the downtown open will be cleaned
- 28:30up before Regottics. We have those sidewalks cleared for that, and then you
- 28:33roll into Regatta. You've got Live on the levee, I mean, multi
- 28:37fests. It's just it's one thing after another, so it's a great time
- 28:41to be and of course the outdoor dining as you said Live on the Levee
- 28:44just started last week and the outdoor dining has started again. If people want
- 28:48more information about the Charleston Are Alliance and what exactly it is that you do,
- 28:52because I've had you and Nicole and others on the show in the past,
- 28:55so explain it just for those who may not know. What is it
- 28:57that the Charleston Ay Alliance does. We are the Regions which includes most of
- 29:03the Canal County and of course the City of Charles and Community and Economic Development
- 29:07Organization. We also have an arm which is a traditional chamber of commerce.
- 29:12So all of that is wrapped up together. So we do, you know,
- 29:17a lot of address in the community development side, a lot of quality
- 29:21of life, community revitalization, celebrating the community. On the economic development side
- 29:27as business retention, recruitment and expansion, and then on the chamber side is
- 29:33more of them, you know, legislative issues, but we've been there too.
- 29:38We also have a lot of networking opportunities and we do a lot of
- 29:44education. We have women's empowerment sessions and we'll have specific workshops on certain business
- 29:52issues that we know the business community is just really wanting to get more information
- 29:56on so that's in a nutshell what we do. We're about jobs and God
- 30:03in the community. And again this is not just downtown char also we're talking
- 30:06this is the whole. The worth that you folks do impacts the entire valley
- 30:08and really this part of I mean the whole, the whole thing. All
- 30:11right, let's talk about the downtown open again and people can get their their
- 30:15their stuff. Where were the businesses again? Um, they can pick up
- 30:18their petters and their balls at Adelphia H Taylor Books, Tony the Taylor and
- 30:23Art Emporer. Do you have to say Tony the Taylor? Yeah, I
- 30:26mean did you have to throw him in their realm? I had to throw
- 30:29him. Well, let me say this about Tony the Taylor is and I'm
- 30:30a huge football fan. People listen to the show, not Tony is that
- 30:33as a fan of that Washington team. But art Emporium, Tracy Down Art
- 30:40Emporium, huge Cowboys fan. Oh, I'm going to encourage you to go
- 30:44into art Emporium as supposed Tony the Taylor. I'm going to encourage that.
- 30:47Now I'm kidding. Tony's a good He has a lot of really really fabulous
- 30:51art from local artists there. But Yeah, So we're really happy that they're
- 30:55partnering with us because you know, there's a lot of people coming in out
- 30:57their doors, you know, swinging golf clubs around and stuff. But they've
- 31:02been with us every single year and we're really really pleased to have them.
- 31:06All. Right, things kick off at tea off, I guess at noon
- 31:07tomorrow, right if at noon tomorrow, and then you can play through January
- 31:11to her June twenty first. All right, good stuff, Susie. I
- 31:14appreciate you being here. Thanks a lot. We'll talk again soon. Good

- 34:39Nichols, a Desire producer to Day. Doug Irwin joins us now from this
- 34:44Backpack Buddies program. Doug, good morning, how are you. Good morning,
- 34:46very well this morning. Thank you for having us, Thank you for
- 34:49being here. Let's talk about this program. And I kind of teased it
- 34:52a little bit, I guess, Doug. Going into the break, they're
- 34:53saying that school's out for I think in Putnam County, where I live,
- 34:58I think today is officially the last day. I think I may be wrong
- 35:00about that based on the amount of traffic that I drove through this morning.
- 35:06It's it's getting close, I'll put it that way, or the lack of
- 35:08traffic. I should say some areas it's already out. Of other areas,
- 35:10it'll be out in the next couple of days. When these when students go
- 35:15home though for the summer. Um you know, sometimes we forget that many
- 35:21of those don't have the luxury of going home and and doing the things we
- 35:24did growing up, you know, hanging by the pool and riding bikes,
- 35:28playing baseball, going home and having a sandwich and having a big cook out.
- 35:30That's that's not true for for all these kids done. It's not because
- 35:36we have we have such a need in our community where you know, we
- 35:39have kids that on Fridays, you know, they receive extra food to take
- 35:45home on their weekends, but also they rely on the school breakfast and lunch
- 35:50to really as a main source of their nutrition. And then we've got great
- 35:54community organizations throughout the school year that does do give them extra food to take
- 36:00home for the weekends, and you know, when school is out, all
- 36:05of that ends. So you know what backpack Buddy dot Org does is we
- 36:07look at that and we say, you know, how can we help kids
- 36:10during the summertime to bridge that gap to that summertime that they're away and get
- 36:16them back to school in August. And this is I said, it's the
- 36:21I referred to it as the Putnham County Backpack Buddies program, But actually,
- 36:23do you extend this into other areas, right, we do. We started
- 36:28eleven years ago in Putnham County. That first year we did three schools,
- 36:31fifty three kids, and it has grown over the last eleven years where we're
- 36:37now in five West Virginia counties, including all of Putnham County. Schools participate
- 36:42in all of Boone County as well. So how does the program actually work.
- 36:45We'll break it down for us. Well, what we do is a
- 36:47little bit unique. We started looking at how do we how can we help
- 36:52kids in the summertime, and we and we started talking to the teachers and
- 36:57the counselors and the schools that truly have the core of their being is supporting
- 37:02our kids. And you know, they make sure that they have stuff during
- 37:06the school year, but you know, when school's out, they don't have
- 37:08that access to the kids. And they've tried multiple things through the years as
- 37:13far as hey meet us at the school on Wednesias from six to eight.
- 37:16But you know, they might be helping twenty to thirty kids during the school
- 37:20year, but maybe one or two could come and because maybe the parents didn't
- 37:23have transportation, maybe the parents are at work and it just couldn't make it.
- 37:29So what we took a look at is is how do we actually get
- 37:31stuff to kids? And you know Amazon, we can order anything on Amazon
- 37:37and have it the next day or in two days. So if we can
- 37:39fly stuff all around the world, how can we not get food to a
- 37:44kid, you know, ten miles down the road. So what we developed
- 37:46is a box that we work with the post Office twelve to twelve. We
- 37:51put twenty three different items in a box, shelf stable food and we actually
- 37:55mail food to kids during the summertime. So every other during the summer this
- 38:00year, five boxes, five shipments will go out, food will arrive in
- 38:06the mail and at these at these participating students home. So we're ensuring that
- 38:12the service and the food is arriving. And I mean, I'm gonna think,
- 38:15Doug, that's gonna be pretty expensive, right, It's very ext It's
- 38:19just why you're here today. Let's talk about it. But go ahead.
- 38:22Well it's you know, there's a cost to delivery whatever, whether yea,
- 38:25no matter how you do it, however you do it. So if if
- 38:29a parent is driving you know, uh, ten miles fifteen miles each way,
- 38:34uh, you know, there's still a cost associated with it. So
- 38:37We've worked with the post Office and you know, we you find the best
- 38:40rates and you know, the most stuff that we can put in the boxes.
- 38:44And you know there it does cost us to to mail it. And
- 38:46we get a lot of questions, you know, why do you mail because
- 38:50you that's a cost that you can you could apply to buy more food.
- 38:53But you can buy all the food in the world, but if you can't
- 38:55get it to the great yea. And so many of these kids, and
- 38:59I know a little bit about to program, so many of these kids don't
- 39:01have reliable transportation. And like you talked about, you said, you know,
- 39:06okay, we're gonna be at such and such school, you know this
- 39:09Tuesday night between six and eight. Well, good luck and trying to get
- 39:12to such and such school, right exactly. And and we and our program
- 39:17is really geared to rural areas because of the you know, for instance,
- 39:22you know, we do all of Putnam County, uh and we do all
- 39:27of Boone County and so you've got you know, we've got over eight hundred
- 39:30kids signed up in Boone County and it's it's across the whole county. So
- 39:36how do we centralize that? And on the Sherman side or the van side,
- 39:40you or Scott, you know, how do you look at that and
- 39:44do that logistics? And the Post Office has been a great partner for us
- 39:47that we that we give it to them. But but the best thing about
- 39:51is is our box. And when we mail it to them, it's just
- 39:53a box. It looks like Amazon. It looks like you know, the
- 39:57next you bought something off of eBay. So there's no stigmatism to it that
- 40:00that Hey, you know, my neighbors getting a box of food. So
- 40:05your privacy is a huge part of this is what we do and you trying
- 40:08to be as covert about it as possible, but we know that every other
- 40:14week our participating families will get twenty three different items in the box. Talking
- 40:19to Doug Irwin from the Backpack Buddies program here on five eighty Live. So
- 40:23what do you need, Doug from the community, be it individuals, businesses,
- 40:28civic groups, what have you? What? What? What? What
- 40:30do you need? Well, the big thing what we're we have on the
- 40:35first Saturday of every year, first Saturday of June, we always have what
- 40:37we have our Collar Community Picking Day in Putnam County where we buy all of
- 40:42our food and we pick the boxes that we use all summer. We meet
- 40:46on Saturday. It'll be this Saturday, June to third, at ten o'clock
- 40:51at the Tas Valley Church of the Nazarene, and we'll have all of our
- 40:54food that we need for all summer. So we'll have Have you ever wondered
- 40:58what twenty five thousand cans are out? We always looks like, come on
- 41:01down and help us pack our boxes. You had my producer Ryan at Ravioli,
- 41:06go ahead, cut one. We've got it all and uh, we'll
- 41:08be packing over four thousand boxes for for Putnham County this year, the most
- 41:13ever that we've ever done. The need that we have this year, we
- 41:16have over two thousand kids participating, which is the most ever that we've had.
- 41:22And you know, we've been relatively successful over the years. We've we've
- 41:25mailed almost to thirty seven thousand boxes of food since the program started and helped
- 41:30over twelve thousand kids, So that's in eleven years. So this year we're
- 41:35doing we'll mail over between all of the programs that we're participating, we'll mail
- 41:39over seven thousand boxes to two thousands. So what you're asking for Doug is.
- 41:44You need bodies out there. We need bodies, and so this would
- 41:45be great. You know, if you have a civic organization, you know,
- 41:49a Kwanas or rotary or something like that. It would be great for
- 41:53sports teams. Sports teams, and I'm always preaching this because of my friends
- 41:58that have kids in school system. You have to do community service hours.
- 42:00I'm gonna say, I'm gonna guess this would probably qualify. It qualifies,
- 42:06and everybody gets a certificate that we everybody signs up and everybody gets a certificate
- 42:10before they leave noting their participation and come out and we'll pack four thousand boxes
- 42:17under two hours. So we need a lot of people out there. We
- 42:20need a lot of people, and we do. Putnam County's the first Saturday
- 42:23in June. The second Saturday June is always in Madison in Boone County,
- 42:28So we'll be there in the Madison Civic Center on June the tenth at ten
- 42:31o'clock and we'll be packing over over two thousand boxes there. So either it
- 42:37Tastes Valley on this coming Saturday at ten o'clock at the Tays Valley Church in
- 42:42the Nazarene or next a week from Saturday on June tenth at the Madison Civic
- 42:46Center. So the House of food paid for, I mean grants and donations.
- 42:52We have a great donor base and supporters that have been with us from
- 42:57almost day one. And but we're all he's looking for more and because you
- 43:01know, costs of food has gone up so efficantly and also, um,
- 43:07you know, we're looking to expand the program, so additional funding that we
- 43:12receive that allows us to go in other areas. You know, for instance,
- 43:15we've recently gone into Clay County, uh and we're we're slowly working our
- 43:20way into into that area that we'd love to to expand to other areas,
- 43:24but depending on the funding and what we have access to. All right,
- 43:29So where can people learn more about the program? Got a website? Phone
- 43:30number where you got We've got website backpack buddy dot org and go visit there.
- 43:37Our contact information is there. But also you'll find us on Facebook,
- 43:39uh, backpack buddy dot org, Putnam and backpack buddy dot org Boon and
- 43:45again they could use some some manual labor. Uh. This this coming Saturday
- 43:51at ten ten o'clock Tay's Valley Church and NAZ rain, and if you're not
- 43:53familiar with it, if you take the Tay's Valley, if you're coming from
- 43:55Charleston, take the tays Valley exit and and hang at It's very convenient,
- 44:00fine left hand side of the road. It's right there on the main drag
- 44:02there in Tay's Valley. Huge parking lot, plenty of parking, but you're
- 44:06gonna take up a whole lot of it this week. Well, we'll take
- 44:07up the parking lot, but the good folks at Chapman Funeral Home allow us
- 44:12to use their lot. And everybody park at the funeral home and just walk
- 44:15right up the hill and we'll get kicked off about ten o'clock. We'll have
- 44:20a great time. Um. It's it's it's pretty active and the whole community
- 44:23comes out and you'll see friends and make new friends and uh, and you'll
- 44:28learn about the need that we have in our communities. It's it's just not
- 44:30um, we have significant needs and uh, you know, we're very fortunate
- 44:36to be able to provide assistance to our students during the summertime. Good stuff,
- 44:42all right, Doug, I appreciate it. Good luck this week in
- 44:44Tay's Valley and also next weekend in the Boone County there in Madison. Thanks
- 44:46a lot man, We'll talk soon, Thank you very much. It's nine

- 49:53situation, not much. Tom Sussman, who's a spokesperson for the family of
- 49:59the on account commissioner Kik Carper, says that Christia Carper suffered a stroke several
- 50:05days before being admitted to the hospital for major heart surgery, and a Hoppy
- 50:08tweeted about it this morning. Still nothing new on potential criminal charges in that
- 50:14investigation against Carper. Nobody's saying anything at this time. People focusing more in
- 50:19his recovery at this point. But that is some new news there, and
- 50:21of course if anything new does break there will let you know about it.
- 50:24Hobby, also on the show this morning, is going to get into this
- 50:29top of the show there's a new poll out from East Carolina University that says,
- 50:35and a head to head matchup between Governor Justice and current Senator Joe Manchon
- 50:39for US Senate, Joe is in trouble big time. Governor Justice leads by
- 50:46twenty two points. That's twenty two points, folks, against the iconic Joe
- 50:53Joe Manchon. Now, that's according to this poll again commissioned by the East
- 50:57Carolina University Center for Research. I think that, and I hate to speculate
- 51:06and try to get into the mind of Joe Manchion. I think Senator Mansion
- 51:09may be seeing the writing on the wall here, folks. That's why many
- 51:14people think he will not run for reelection. To send it as it stands
- 51:19now and again, lots of time between now and then he gets his clock
- 51:23clean by Governor Justice, period, and that's why many people are saying he
- 51:30will choose not to run. And again he'll do some sort of whether it's
- 51:34the no labels or whatever they want to call it, a third party candidacy
- 51:38for president, not necessarily, as he said on Hoppy, to win the
- 51:44presidency, but just to shake things up. So worth noting there's a long
- 51:51time between now and then. I heard this over the weekend. At this
- 51:52point in twenty sixteen, the front runners for president were Jeb Bush and Hillary
- 51:55Clinton, So keep that in mind, all right, we gotta go.
- 52:00Thank you so much. All our guests on the show today, Logan High
