- 4:34SPEAKER_00: Make it really clear what each person in the team is expected to do.
- 4:38SPEAKER_00: You can work this out and tell a team.
- 4:41SPEAKER_00: Or you can work with a team to map out who is doing what.
- 4:44SPEAKER_00: Think about creating responsibilities for tasks, activities, projects, behaviours, and results.
- 4:50SPEAKER_00: Write out role descriptions and talk these through with each team member and the team overall.
- 4:56SPEAKER_00: Write down who is responsible for delivering tasks and projects.
- 5:00SPEAKER_00: Clearly define what results are needed and by when.
- 5:03SPEAKER_00: Constantly communicate with team members so everyone is aware of the progress of activities and projects.
- 5:08SPEAKER_00: Share information freely and openly.
- 5:11SPEAKER_00: Ask your team members to do the same.
- 5:13SPEAKER_00: The more team members hold themselves and each other accountable in the areas of their responsibilities, the stronger their teamwork will be and the less following up that you'll have to do as a manager.
- 5:24SPEAKER_00: Do your absolute best to create clear responsibilities by person and help everyone in the team understand what each team member will look after and deliver.
- 5:33SPEAKER_00: The fourth way to encourage more teamwork is to build trust, both at a personal level and a professional level.
- 5:40SPEAKER_00: Building trust in a team starts with you.
- 5:43SPEAKER_00: How do you demonstrate that you trust your team members to do their job?
- 5:48SPEAKER_00: There are so many ways that you can extend trust to your team members.
- 5:52SPEAKER_00: Give them the space to show you what they can do.
- 5:55SPEAKER_00: Give them problems to solve rather than detail out tasks that you want them to do.
- 5:59SPEAKER_00: Give them relevant information openly so they can do the best job they can.
- 6:04SPEAKER_00: Ask them to teach other team members on your behalf.
- 6:07SPEAKER_00: Give them responsibility.
- 6:09SPEAKER_00: Work hard to develop them so they can move their careers forward quicker.
- 6:14SPEAKER_00: Extend trust and make the time to verify.
- 6:17SPEAKER_00: Extend trust until they give you a reason not to deserve that trust.
- 6:21SPEAKER_00: Call them out if they don't deliver against reasonable expectations.
- 6:25SPEAKER_00: Spend time getting to know your team on a personal level.
- 6:28SPEAKER_00: Find out what their interests are, what they do outside of work, what their ambitions are and what their strengths are.
- 6:35SPEAKER_00: Other very good ways to build trust in your team include, firstly, live the expectations you set and deliver what you say.
- 6:43SPEAKER_00: Secondly, be open and honest in your communications.
- 6:46SPEAKER_00: Tell it how it is.
- 6:48SPEAKER_00: Third, build personal connections with team members and encourage all team members to get to know each other better.
- 6:54SPEAKER_00: Fourth, champion transparency and openness in how you work with team members and ask them to do the same with each other.
- 7:01SPEAKER_00: Fifth, listen and act on what your team member provides in terms of ideas, problems and solutions.
- 7:08SPEAKER_00: Put in the time to extend trust to your team members.
- 7:12SPEAKER_00: Be patient.
- 7:13SPEAKER_00: Building trust takes time, so expect steady progress rather than instant trust.
- 7:18SPEAKER_00: The fifth way to encourage more teamwork is lots of open, honest communication.
- 7:24SPEAKER_00: Communication is the foundation of good teamwork.
- 7:27SPEAKER_00: Good communication is needed to closely coordinate activities and tasks across the team.
- 7:32SPEAKER_00: Communication is needed to collaborate, to share information and to solve problems together.
- 7:38SPEAKER_00: How you communicate with your team members, your boss and your colleagues sets the tone for how your team will communicate with you and each other.
- 7:47SPEAKER_00: Be open, be honest, direct, considerate and diplomatic in how you communicate.
- 7:52SPEAKER_00: Make sure your messages are clear, consistent and don't upset team members.
- 7:57SPEAKER_00: Give specific and intelligent praise every day to team members that demonstrate good actions, decisions, behaviors, and results to set and reinforce expectations.
- 8:07SPEAKER_00: Give praise to reward.
- 8:09SPEAKER_00: Give feedback to correct and teach.
- 8:12SPEAKER_00: Give feedback to improve performance.
- 8:14SPEAKER_00: Celebrate team successes and those that demonstrate good teamwork.
- 8:19SPEAKER_00: Share the knowledge you have that will help team members do their jobs better.
- 8:23SPEAKER_00: Share knowledge that gives them context and direction.
- 8:26SPEAKER_00: The more relevant information team members have, the better decisions they will make and the better solutions they will create to problems they face.
- 8:33SPEAKER_00: Communicate and explain the team priorities and why they are prioritized in that way.
- 8:38SPEAKER_00: Explain what drives changes to these priorities.
- 8:41SPEAKER_00: Give context to educate and empower your team to do the best job they can.
- 8:46SPEAKER_00: The sixth way to encourage more teamwork is to give personal rewards based on team success.
- 8:52SPEAKER_00: There are a lot of rewards that you can give to team members.
- 8:56SPEAKER_00: Some include, firstly, praise and recognition, both public and private.
- 9:02SPEAKER_00: Secondly, more of your mentoring and coaching time.
- 9:05SPEAKER_00: Third, giving problems and support to develop skills rather than task instructions.
- 9:10SPEAKER_00: Fourth, intelligently plan out projects and experience to move them towards their ambitions.
- 9:16SPEAKER_00: Fifth, more pay in bonuses and salary increases.
- 9:20SPEAKER_00: Sixth, faster career progress through promotions.
- 9:24SPEAKER_00: Be very disciplined in giving rewards to team members that display great teamwork and who focus on helping their team achieve team goals.
- 9:33SPEAKER_00: We are all motivated by what we personally get.
- 9:36SPEAKER_00: It may not be the only consideration, yet it remains a very important consideration for nearly everyone.
- 9:43SPEAKER_00: So, in summary, the more you align your actions, decisions, behaviors, and the rewards that you give to promoting teamwork, to promoting trust, relationships, collaboration, communication, reliance, and enjoyment, the better your employees will work as a team.
- 9:58SPEAKER_00: In my experience, a skilled manager can quickly transform teams in terms of culture, atmosphere, and performance.
- 10:05SPEAKER_00: The performance improvement from moving a group of individuals to work as a team together can be dramatic, multiple times the increase in value and profit rather than just 10 or 20%.
