Austin's like "Dude I've been faking it the whole time." You know 4:29 I'm being meta I'm a He's Andy coughing it where he's like you know it's a whole bit It's not It's just Bruce Willis is 4:37 now kind of gone you know it's bittersweet It's bittersweet Well and you're only halfway through I mean I 4:43 can't really imagine what the last ones are going to be like you know well if they're anything like where we're in 4:49 [ __ ] show central is what they are They are they've been tough a couple We've 4:54 had a few surprises this you know currently but it's been a rough It's been Season two was ducks It's getting 5:01 rougher and rougher as it goes But you never know what you're going to get You never know You know you never know So or 5:06 who's going to be in them That's the fun part too It was like like how did this person you you kind of find like these 5:12 careers of what I would say like CW stars or the WB or you know shows over in America you're like oh those guys 5:17 were popular back in the early 2000s and now you're like what did they ever do they were in STDs That's what they were 5:24 in They found a new life there Super fun Yeah Awesome Oh my gosh And yeah Scott 5:31 you said you have uh Church of Tarantino Yep Church Tarantino is in season 4 now 5:36 It's a basically a weekly podcast because I've got psychological problems It's the only way to get through what we're going through you and I Katie here 5:43 in our country It's a just kind of put your head down and pretend that your little bubble is all that's around you 5:48 and you just Yep grin and white knuckle it You You know what i'll be honest with you This is not to be glib I sometimes 5:56 right now I kind of wish I was in Bruce Willis's shoes He's having a great time He doesn't know what's going on and it's 6:02 probably the best way to live right now Ignorance I know that sounds terrible Yeah No no It's true Ignorance is bliss 6:07 Yeah it is Yeah Know so that's going really well And then Stephen and I obviously we also have the Men of Action 6:12 and we are halfway through season three three but season two of the of the 6:18 shift to the Men of Action and we've been having fun with that So 6:24 we're doing a lot of sequels at the moment Yeah Pitching them against each other you know Not that's been 6:29 surprising as well I've had some kind of doing some too We just for our February episode we have two Eddie Murphy's where 6:37 we did another 48 hours and we did uh Hills Cop 2 So we hadn't seen those in a 6:43 long time It's that nostalgia you we we've learned that sometimes how we remember the movie as we'll probably 6:49 talk about and what really happens in the movie are sometimes not the same anymore after 30 plus years of of 6:56 remembering them So Yeah Fun journeys Fun journeys We we enjoy it It's it's always been about the conversation for 7:02 us So we just kind of enjoy busting each other's balls busting the balls of the people made these films and having fun 7:07 with them and then people like it Awesome If not you all should tune in All their stuff will be in the show notes So check that out Thank you So 7:14 we're going to go back to 1989 for the time capsule I wish we could Right Is 7:20 this real am I being sucked through my computer please is this really We're go to 89 We are going to go to 89 And I 7:27 have put a new spin pun intended on the time capsule So let's start by opening 7:34 it from August 1989 Okay Yeah This is high tech Well so 7:43 there's 12 categories in the Retro Time capsule for season 2 So I'm going to I'm going to spin on your behalf you guys 7:49 Thank you And see what we come up with here Uh what are we on the stars Stars and 7:57 scandals Stars and scandals Okay Their rise was meteoric Their downfall even 8:02 swifter One moment they were winning awards The next their voices were called into question A single technical mishap 8:10 exposed a truth they could never recover from Who were they vanilly Vanilly All right Yes All right 8:18 Great If you actually saw You did not I did My father was in radio 8:26 and they came around here uh in the summer one time and he had tickets So you know this is before we knew that 8:32 they were there was the rumors that they were lip-syncing but at the same time most pop bands at that time because they 8:38 had so many choreographed stuff a lot of it seemed like they were lip-syncing anyways you know 8:43 Was Yeah And so we went to see them and I think Young MC opened for them Young 8:49 MC open I know Yes Milly Yeah So So yes I have seen Here's the thing 8:57 Whatever happened to the real people sang i know right like the people who sang the real voices was what one So the 9:05 guys pretending to be didn't shouldn't What about the people i mean where's the real Millie Vanilla that's the That's 9:11 the new special I want to see is what happened to the real people was saying they were they should have won all these 9:16 awards They just were they that ugly how ugly are they well it's Smelly Cat from Friends you guys 9:22 Smelly cat Smelly cat Yes Yeah Yeah Like when she gets the video Yeah But like I 9:28 said who's where are those people those people should be making millions of dollars They won awards They had award-winning voices Are they ugly and 9:36 deformed that they can't be seen like that's all I can think of Like why I 9:42 mean you've got you've got platinum album selling voices who also you know were winning Grammys all that stuff and 9:49 they were selling millions of records The voices didn't change the people pretending to be him did I'm more 9:54 concerned with the fact you went to see me veneerly more than anything I feel like I don't know you anymore Listen I 10:00 don't know myself either You know what i was the first domino that started America's downfall Yeah 10:07 Girl you know it's true Blame it on the rain 10:12 They had They have some bangers They do They have some bangers Whoever they are they were good Yeah they were that was 10:18 fun That was a fun time back then All right you guys This is the next one 10:23 Oh fad flashback Uh okay So 99 several fads 10:29 and cultural phenomena left a lasting impact on society What movie premiering in June 10:36 23rd 1989 um became the highest grossing movie of 10:42 the year its success with a lot of merchandise and kind of ushered in an 10:48 era of blockbusters Batman Batman Oh yeah That Yeah that's 10:54 right Batman Yeah The and the Prince as the did the whole album Yes I love that 11:00 album I I The Prince has Oh I got You know what i got to see Prince That should that should balance things out 11:05 But he didn't do a single song and this was like early 90s Not a single song from the Bad from the Batman album He's 11:12 got some pretty good songs on there He just said I think I realized Prince did that album The whole album All I know is 11:18 the entire album is him I think I know Shan from Sha of the Dead did not like that album Didn't they use that to throw 11:24 the zombies sean from Shan then go [ __ ] himself All right How dare he bismerch 11:29 The Great Prince Right Little Red came out today Yes I saw that The dirtiest 11:36 song that ever got past the FCC Mhm When you think about the lyrics in that song 11:42 sometimes you go "Holy Corvette." Oh right Yeah Yeah 83 11:48 She's got some Trojans in her She's got Trojan in her pockets Some of them used Pocket full of horses Pickers Yeah Yeah 11:54 Sorry Pocket full of horses Some She's got pictures of the Drais before Prince 11:59 was a genius at writing subtextual lyrics that people didn't realize You know you're like "Hey in the back of the 12:06 car singing the song." As I got older I'm like "Oh my god that's just disgusting." 12:11 [Laughter] Let's see what else we got you guys [Music] 12:20 Oh totally Totally tasty from 89 This snack offered a three- foot long 12:27 roll of fruity chewy candy providing a playful and tasty treat 12:33 There's two that are very similar Is it the fruit roll up foot long or is that something else cuz what I know of is 12:40 fruit the fruit rollup had the foot long roll out thing Fruit by the foot is it's 12:46 called fruit by the foot Okay Fruit by the foot And then similarly introducing You're not missing out See it it'll 12:52 destroy your intestines This gum became a favorite among kids for its unique packaging and fun factor Very similar 12:59 What was it called is this bigly chew no it was like it was like the long or the candy cigarettes No the long It's 13:06 similar to Fruit by the Foot Oh Oh is that the bubble tape bubble tape Bubble tape by bubble yum or whatever it was 13:12 Mhm Bubble tape Listen Steve We're the king of sugar over here in America Let me tell you something I'm just a 13:17 spectator here Let me tell you something I'm not familiar with these I'm afraid You know what the stars on our flag are made of [ __ ] sugar [ __ ] 13:25 That's why it's white That's why it's white All right let's 13:30 let's go Let's do what let's do one more Um you should make a whole episode of just doing me to the 12 questions I know 13:37 Oh we already did flat fat flashback Come on man Unbelievable It's rigged 13:45 Musk is messing with it Oh Prime Time Rewind This is perfect 13:53 because in 1989 I'm a couple years younger than Ste but I'm in I'm 14 15 years old now And now you know like I'm 13:59 a little bit older so I can start staying up a little bit later You know I know a little bit more about the TV at 14:05 this point than I like if 1983 I'm a little kid Oh yeah For sure Still know enough Uh okay A patriarch in colorful 14:12 attire kept his household in check A sharp-witted matriarch led her workingass brood A familiar gathering 14:20 spot thrived on laughter and loyalty Young minds sought wisdom with 14:25 historic walls and Everyday Blunders became must-see TV What five shows kept 14:33 audiences hooked in 1989 the last one is Oh my god Why it's AMV America's 14:39 Funniest Videos Funniest Home Videos Yes Cosby Show in the Was the first one the Cosby Show Was the second one sorry I 14:45 thought you were reading one whole show So what was the second no sorry Yeah these were a patriarch and colorful attire We got that one A sharp witted 14:52 matriarch led her working-class brood Familiar gathering spot thrived on laughter and loyalty Young minds sought 14:58 wisdom within historic walls Second one Roseanne Yes Yes Third one 15:04 Cheers Yep There's one more Fourth one Is that a I feel like this is a game 15:11 on Nickelodeon Prime Time No it's prime time Prime time 15:17 Okay Prime time So young minds for in historic 15:25 Jesus Is this young Indiana Jones 15:30 no it is not Steve what do you think what was the Young Minds historical and 15:39 what was it sorry We're old Different Young minds sought wisdom within historic walls Steve is getting there 15:46 Different world Yes It was a spin-off from the Cosby show A different world 15:52 All right Okay I love that show I know some things Nice You do All right That was good That 15:58 was good Thanks for playing guys You did pretty good You did pretty good We got to up our game now Steve We got to have some kind of game now All right Damn it 16:05 Season I like that I I dug that That was fun Season four we're going to have to have some some games Mhm We're going to 16:11 We're totally going to steal from you I'm just going to be honest with you You might want to trademark that Well we we'll give you a little hint This is 16:16 from Katie I got to tell you though just it's a lot more work to prepare Yes So I shot Steve could do 16:24 it He's do something around here Godamn it I shot myself in the foot 16:29 All right you guys This season is John Hughes So I gota I have to ask at what point did you realize that John Hughes 16:36 was the mastermind behind so many of these iconic 80s and 90s movies 16:42 probably mid to late 90s because I think again I'm not trying to It feels like in 16:48 the '9s we started to realize that there's directors Mhm As opposed because 16:53 I feel like a lot of the times in the 90s or the 80s it was actress that were kind of leading everything Now of course we know Spielberg right so Spielberg was 17:00 like the main but you're also younger so that's how you know Spielberg Um Scorseseia I didn't know who that was 17:06 until I was in in the ' 90s Copela you know I learn about these guys cuz now it's you know the aours I think a lot of 17:13 the Tarantinoesque people with the the independence movement in the '90s helped 17:19 us now to appreciate directors and not just go to movies for Stallone Schwarzenegger Willis you know because 17:27 that was kind of how everything was made back in the 80s at least the adult fair So I didn't know what you know I knew 17:33 the John Hughes movies I didn't know it was just John Hughes right it's like you know Ferris Spuel and all these ones you don't know that it's him until a certain 17:40 time So I think I learned in the early 90s that the movies I liked were from 17:46 John Hughes as opposed to knowing when I went to the movie oh it's this John Hughes's new movie You know that kind of 17:52 that kind of feel What about you Steve did you know as a kid so or 17:58 so at the time of Uncle Buck I was 17 Mhm I'm trying to 18:05 think Let me just I think probably I think I was probably aware at that time 18:12 but only just I mean cuz we'd had I think we'd had Ferris 18:17 Beller and a few other things So I'm not trying to be a smarty 18:24 pants but I think at that time I I was quite aware I think it does make sense 18:31 And he had already by this time cuz he was really known for when you think of John Hughes a lot of people think of the 18:37 Brat Pack type movies his earlier teen teen type movies and then he he 18:43 transitioned into more like familyfriendly bear So so yeah Breakfast Club Mhm I wouldn't have been aware then 18:52 but I think by uncle by Uncle Buck time that's 89 I mean maybe it came out in ' 18:58 89 I might not have seen it in ' 89 might have seen it in 1990 So I was like 18 17 18 I think by then I would have 19:07 put the pieces together so to speak but that's just Yeah I think most likely a 19:12 lie but it's fine Li I didn't know he directed Buckle Buck to be quite honest with you I'm just I'm just riffing No no 19:19 when you look at some of his stuff you realize that he actually wrote more than he directed which is kind of I think the 19:25 a thing that not a lot of people probably realized is that Yeah He he's known for a lot but a lot of it is as a 19:31 writer You know you just assume he's always been the director of these things When you're like "Oh no He's actually written." I mean I'm looking at this 19:37 thing right now He is the 1980s teen movie right like it's what 16 candles 19:44 Breakfast Club Weird Science Pretty and P Fris Be's Day Off Some Kind of Wonderful Yep She's having a baby you 19:49 know and then he starts to move into as as you were saying Steve like uh Planes Trains and Automobiles The Great 19:55 Outdoors Uncle Buck we're talking about National or Vacation he he writes that Home Alone you know he starts to slowly 20:03 turn more into that I mean some flubber like there's some of them I'm like he did that you know Dennis the Menace like 20:09 you go what he wrote those so yeah I mean I'm mainly I was mainly talking about him as a director I you know No I 20:14 know But I think a lot of it sold as John Hughes right like it's sold as like yeah he didn't direct it but can you 20:21 tell me who the director of some of these are you're kind of like you know you know what I mean that could be a 20:26 good game for you John John Hughes writer or a director which one and be like there's only like a handful that he 20:32 wrote and directed of which this is Uncle Buck is So let's let's get into 20:37 Uncle Buck [Music] 20:43 released August 16th 1989 It is 20:49 PG Yeah it's PG I don't know We'll talk about that 7.1 uh IMDb and Yep He wrote and directed If 20:58 you guys have not seen Uncle Buck in a while first of all go watch it Come back But yes it follows the story of Buck 21:04 Russell a carefree unemployed bachelor who is unexpectedly called upon to babysit his brother's three kids when a 21:11 family emergency arises Initially seen as irresponsible and out of place Buck 21:16 struggles to connect with his teenage niece Tia while managing the antics of her younger siblings Miles and Maisie 21:23 through his unconventional but well-meaning ways but gradually wins them over proving his loyalty and love 21:30 for the family So it's a very it's like a kind of a movie trope but I don't know again 21:36 in ' 89 I don't know how like Mr mom Also written by John Hughes but there's 21:42 a lot of movies that followed this similar classic fish out of water kind of a story where there's an unlikely 21:49 caregiver but I think maybe was this one of the earlier ones that we watched anyway 21:56 If it's not one of the early ones it's one of the best ones that's for sure And yeah John Candy And I mean I've watched 22:03 it again today I haven't probably watched it in probably three decades It's probably 22:08 been almost that long I forgot how funny this thing was Hilarious Like I remember 22:14 watching it today going "Why are we making more comedies like this?" Like all the comedies we have nowadays kind 22:19 of suck a lot And this was I mean just brilliant It was just funny from start to finish I forgot some of the gags that 22:27 were in it I'm sure we'll get into them but like with the clown there just certain things that happened just kind of like "My god I forgot that happened 22:34 Oh my god." And McCaulay Kulkin Oh my god Oh my This is I mean this is where 22:39 he anyone who thinks he just you know started Home Alone No no no You got to see Uncle Buck McCully came earns Uncle 22:46 Buck or earns of that through Uncle Buck It there were so it's hard to because it 22:51 was the next year Home Alone was in 1990 which we'll cover on this show But 22:56 several points I was like "Oh my god that's so similar." Beat forbeat Home Alone stuff like where he's washing the 23:02 dishes where he's like that rapid fire Q&A with John Candy Was there There was 23:07 another one too where he's I'm a kid that's my job or something like that It was very doesn't know the word for balls and he goes nuts It's just 23:15 Oh my god it was just so funny I mean it was so good I forgot how they were just 23:20 so much fun Those movies were just so much fun And now that you're an adult and you know Disney has done this for 23:27 forever and my kids are now of an age where they now have un realized the adult themed jokes that are slid into uh 23:34 kids movies that they have no clue Like just some of the the washing machine bit and even in the 23:41 beginning where they're talking about the word crap and [ __ ] with it just so much of fun is happening in this film 23:48 that I I kind of it made me really nostalgic for the 80s I really was like I miss these kind of movies and I miss 23:54 John Candy I think I don't think I know a lot of our because you know he's I guess you'd be boomer generation really 24:00 He's not technically Gen X and everyone always you know laments about Chris Farley dying too soon but John Candy is 24:07 a genius comedian And oh wow I mean you 24:13 didn't realize you don't realize how big a a hole is left in the universe until you see him again You go my god this man 24:20 was just you know he didn't have to do anything special Didn't do any prep fall He was a big guy He'd have to fall down and break a chair you know what I mean 24:26 and you know play on the fat roll He just was like he just had great time I mean every every second every second 24:32 he's on the screen is just joy Yeah Just fun and amusing He doesn't It's 24:40 effortless Yeah When he even when he's doing natural things there's just something about the guy that we all Yeah 24:47 We That's a terrible loss really cuz some of my favorites you know and he was 24:53 he did he did a great outdoor cover too Yeah Well you know automobiles Home 24:59 Alone I mean that's my fate That's my plan So is there a modern equivalent to 25:04 John Sean Candy do you guys think I know Chris Farley to your point probably got compared to more of a Pratt fall guy you 25:11 know i think that was his big claim to fame and he was good at it There's no doubt about it But I don't know that 25:17 there's a guy who is warm and inviting as a funny man 25:22 right like I think comedy is suffering right now though I would love to have an Uncle Buck I wish I was an Uncle Buck 25:28 You know what I mean like I'm kind of like I want to be Uncle Buck You know what I mean uncle Buck I got to be 25:34 honest with you When I was watching it today as well and I hadn't seen it much like Scott I probably I'll say that's 25:40 been at least 20 years since I've seen it But yeah I think there's there's 25:47 comedy is suffering right now and I don't think there's anyone really like him of his caliber right now But then I 25:54 would say that in general comedy is not in good shape right now Maybe there's not as good a writer as John Hughes 25:59 either you know because they're you know I mean you know as you and I will talk about or 26:04 I talk about mine Tarantino and the musees he has Sometimes you get the best performances 26:11 out of certain actors and then they go into another movie you're like Jesus this person was in the same movie And I 26:16 mean John Kenny in of himself he doesn't need John Hughes When you get a guy who's amazing at writing comedy and you got a guy who 26:22 knows how to deliver comedy and you put them together you're going to get gold and you got freaking gold from almost 26:28 everything John Candy and John Hughes do together Agreed Yeah You know I I agree 26:33 I I think it depicted I hadn't seen it in a while When I watched it yesterday I forgot how it opened and 26:40 it's just a very ordinary family It depicts family dynamics and like bratty 26:46 teenagers and which still lands today Yeah Cuz I went through that with my 26:51 daughter in the late 2010s and it's just I mean I was like holy [ __ ] there's my daughter on the [ __ ] screen Like it's 26:58 I mean you know I did notice this when she walks down the opening shot of her walking She's in leggings That's an 27:03 outfit that except for the hat maybe that's an outfit that you see kids wearing today right it's kind of like Jesus this hasn't really aged too poorly 27:10 because that's it's kind of like what some kids are wearing nowadays Although that's a good point The fun about John 27:15 Hughes movies is he always has these Chicago suburbs and I like how the daughter's like "We had to move from Indianapolis cuz mom and dad couldn't 27:21 afford things." I'm thinking you actually moved up cuz I think mom and dad are making more money I've been to Indianapolis and the suburbs of Chicago 27:27 agiant [ __ ] house I'm thinking I think you're doing pretty okay there Tia I think you better stop being such a 27:33 [ __ ] You're doing really good They also depict the the parents are so focused on 27:38 their jobs that they're not present Like that's the 1980s Yeah Right Like it was I was kind that's my parents So doesn't 27:45 even know when the kids when the hockey season ended Oh my god That's right I forgot about that Then they get I would 27:51 have loved to get take out more but we didn't Like we we had home-cooked meals God forbid you know Um but they're like 27:58 making fun of Oh what a what a wonderful dinner mom Take out Chinese takeout I 28:04 think seeing it I think we probably watched it a hell of a lot when we were younger Mhm I think Yeah I do remember I 28:11 remember quoting this quite a lot as as the lines came back in the sort of home video area I think and at the age we 28:17 were all roughly at at that time We probably did 28:24 rew I hadn't seen it yeah for over 20 years but I felt like I watched it a 28:29 week ago and it was so familiar I was waiting for all the moments that that I 28:35 remember I knew they were coming you know because that's sort of ingrained in my mind that so we must have seen these 28:42 films a lot when we were younger So yeah John Candy though I mean like I say 28:48 every minute he's on screen he's just gold He really is And he's he's one of those guys No he seems like a genuinely 28:56 nice person too You know not scandal no scandals or anything I've never heard anything to the contrary You know what I 29:01 You never hear anything like "Oh Jesus what a drunker What a parass he was." You know he's just No it's John Candy 29:06 John Candy one of Canada's great exports Ooh yeah Wow Oh don't I was just There's 29:13 no ter on him So he plays Buck Russell Let's talk about some of the other casts So the 29:19 teenager Tia So she's a bratty teenager and she's really who he for the most 29:26 part of the movie is really butting heads with Tia played by Jean Louisa Kelly And did you guys recognize her 29:33 from anything else like she wasn't in a lot I don't think I know she's been in some things I couldn't place her cuz the 29:40 movie I know her definitely from is obviously Uncle Buck you know i mean I know she's she's one of those kids like 29:45 even her boyfriend Bug in there I know I've seen him before in some 80s movies but if you put them in a lineup I 29:50 couldn't tell you which one you know So it it's funny because she also aside from this she's most known for playing 29:57 the mom named Kim in the TV series Yes Dear like I want to say early mid 30:04 2000s And so now I was trying to look for it yesterday when I rewatched it So 30:10 that's who she is Maisie the daughter like this there So so the teenage 30:16 daughter Tia is like 15 and then Maisie is six and she's played by Gabby Gabby 30:22 Hoffman and she has gone on to play quite a few things but she was also in 30:28 Field of Dreams Now and then 200 cigarettes in the a couple of TV series 30:34 Girls and Transparent She's in a number of other things but she has gone on to to have a 30:41 fairly well-known career And then McCaulay Kulkin obviously is like the 8-year-old guy I don't remember him Is 30:48 he related to Kieran is he Yeah I think I think it's his brother All right Yeah 30:55 Quintessential 80s9s kid is McCauley I can't stand him Really are you being 31:00 serious Steve like like as an adult or as a kid actor i just hate him I just like him My heart Do you know what are 31:07 you mad cuz he got to hang out with Michael Jackson you didn't Is that what this is is there some selfishness i'm 31:12 certainly not I don't know I don't know what it is I just Do you know what i actually I actually one thing I didn't 31:18 remember about this movie was that he was in it Really and as soon as I saw him 31:25 I was like "Oh no." Holy crap Now we know why Stevens have kids McCauley Kulkin 31:31 Yeah It's funny I love them in this Yeah I noted I do not I uh I also don't have 31:38 kids and just generally they kind of annoy me but I teach them Oh my god I 31:44 don't Bless you Scott I don't know how you do it I don't know either I I must be on some kind of drugs I don't know what I'm taking What age kids do you 31:50 teach [ __ ] middle school 12 The worst It is It really is It's tough It's It's 31:56 a tough go But that's why I have no hair I mean I knew early on I was like I'm not going to need this This will do me I 32:03 did I think it's an 80s thing And again I always feel like like the cranky old lady that is like "Oh things were better 32:09 in my day." But like the kids in this I actually noted because I am largely annoyed by children in movies and TV 32:17 generally a and in the world But they were good I was not annoyed at all I 32:23 thought the two younger I thought John Candy and the two youngest ones their interactions I thought were just a 32:31 really really great I mean you know it's sometimes you you get some kids in movies and like you said you're like 32:36 dragging planks of wood You're like why is this kid even in this [ __ ] movie who do they know to get in this film um 32:42 especially when it's not a kids movie Steve hates this movie But like the Goonies that's a kids movie and so these 32:48 kid actors are acting together So that might be easier for them But when you've got John Candy and then you've got two 32:54 no at the time two nobbodyies right and they're got to act with him I thought 32:59 they were really good back and forth with Candy and McCauley Caulkin at the table You know do you have a Would you 33:06 live in a house no I probably would You have a job You go the back and forth Are you really my brother dad's brother You have more hair It's just kind of like 33:11 the rapid fire was really a fun thing And then the little girl with her sister comes in You said a bad word Crap No 33:18 it's [ __ ] You know that the whole back and forth with them I thought they were really good Steve probably hates him but 33:24 you know he hates everybody so it's okay No I don't know what it is I I just 33:29 don't like that kid And but having said that I mean he's he's fine He's good at 33:36 what he does Don't get me I just there's just something about him He's not for you Not for me Mhm What did you think of 33:44 Chenise who plays John Candy's girlfriend or I mean Chenise is the character's name Yeah She been in I've 33:51 seen her before She's been she feels feels she's been in everything She's like faces Yeah She's one of those 80s 33:57 just Hey that's that person again Amy Madigan is her name and and she's uh I 34:03 believe an Irish I mean her last name is Irish but I think she's like from Ireland Okay Um she was also in Field's 34:10 Dreams Yeah She's been his wife Mhm And then also Gone Baby Gone like that 34:17 really Irish name And she was nominated for an Oscar I haven't seen this but she was nominated 34:22 for her supporting role in Twice in a lifetime in 1986 34:28 And do you know who she's married to very famous actor And they've been married since 1983 And I did not know 34:35 this This makes me love them I do not know It's not Kevin Cosner No Let's 34:41 see Is it Jean Hackman no He just turned 95 the other day It Oh no No No It's 34:47 somebody her age range Dan Akroyd I don't know I'm just I'm just going to start pulling some names from the 80s 34:52 out Ed Harris who I dig I love Ed Harris Harris No [ __ ] Yeah They've been married since 1983 Isn't that cute he's also in 34:59 Gone Baby Go Yes Oh is he one of the police officers yes he is He's one of the people Yeah Yeah I don't give away 35:06 for those who haven't seen it 20 Mhm Good I really like that movie It's a great movie Mhm Mhm I think it's one of 35:13 Ben Affleck's first directorial debut if I'm not mistaken That was his Yeah And I 35:18 like Casey Affleck more than Yeah he's had some had some off the off the- field 35:24 issues but we like Steve and I like to separate Steve and I like to sepase when 35:29 that me too movie came out he got a few things but Steve and I like to you know we separate We separate Listen I know 35:35 Michael Jackson has done some terrible things I know he has There's a lot of I love his music but I love his music So I 35:41 don't I don't want to have any you know he's dead He's long gone but and what he did is horrible but his music is still 35:48 it's still Tom Cruz great actor I mean Manchester by the Sea is just an amazing 35:56 he's done some good stuff he's good and gone baby gone tonight he and Ben Affleck will be in the new Duncan 36:02 commercial I know Steve doesn't care but they'll they've already talked about it so that looks pretty funny I did like his spoof on SNL the Dun oh that was 36:10 great vanilla what was it vanilla nuts the vanilla They're not taps I know some 36:15 things Steve I know some things I just I know 36:21 tangents all over the place with us We're a nightmare I like a tangent but get But getting back from the tangent 36:28 back to Uncle B not the Affleck brothers Uh so the parents in this didn't look 36:33 familiar to me really The only person who looked familiar was the the brother the one with the curly hair He'd been 36:40 like a father in another movie or two He looked familiar I couldn't tell you his name Buck's brother mother but Buck's 36:46 brother had been in some things I know in the 80s I just can't can't place him Yeah His name is Garrett M Brown and he 36:53 did a lot of TV work So he was in Roswell Sisters Trouble I don't know 36:59 what that is And then the movies Kickass and Kickass Too And then the wife He was 37:04 in Kickass Really i've not seen so I don't know Elaine Bronka plays Cindy the 37:09 mom She also has she's more known for a lot of her TV work Most notably playing Dr Riker on Days of Our Lives That's who 37:16 she is And then one of my favorite actresses I adore Lori Metaf She plays 37:22 the their neighbor She's from Roseanne She's Roseanne's sister right yeah 37:28 Jackie and Jackie is Yeah That's her most famous She is great in it She's so 37:34 I love her This was one of her first movie roles I I was re 37:40 her name in the movie is Marcy Dog Frost And I loved the little Frost is my my 37:46 married name but we got divorced But I kept the hyphen Everyone loves the hyphen Yeah I like when he says "I didn't I haven't dropped the Frost." And 37:52 he's kind of looking at cuz she's kind of frosty She was going seems seems a track 37:58 Oh my god She was awesome in this I loved her outfits were I I was like I would wear those She had some great 38:04 outfits in this movie the the the fashion it's weird you know things as I say things come around 38:11 but um some of the fashion still stays on point a little bit I think we've kind of made the circle back around you know 38:19 the cars and certain things would definitely give off but you could definitely you could tell some of this is a modern day movie and be hard for 38:25 some people to tell you know right off the right That's a good point And then you had mentioned you're like I've seen 38:31 Bug Tia's boyfriend in things before He's played by Jay Underwood and he's most known 38:37 for The Boy Who Could Fly Oh okay All right And apparently you guys will think 38:44 this is funny I did anyway He's not an actor anymore I don't think he is a megaurch pastor Tracks He has a megaurch 38:53 pastor face He may be on the same track as Michael Jordan or Michael Jackson not Jordan He does have a megaurch pastor 38:59 face He has that Yeah we'll just leave it there to go sidetrack anymore Yep And then just 39:07 getting through the stats here The music was done by Ira Newborn which I had not heard that name before 39:12 but apparently he collabs quite often with John Hughes And uh so he did a lot 39:18 of songs for movies like 16 Candles Weird Science Ferris Spieler's Day Off Planes Transnomal Automobiles and then 39:26 some very '9s movies Maul Rats and Ace Venture a pet detective I love Mrath and 39:32 his practice Same I really I really enjoyed the music It really worked This 39:38 R&B blues infused fused thing he was doing I really really enjoyed you know 39:44 Uncle Buck has this like little like tom drum thing that almost like you see thatoom and it just I don't know worked 39:50 it worked really well as his like thing Yeah it kind of was wild Yeah Actually 39:55 there's some of the old songs I mean being someone who I kind of grew up really into hip-hop and there's quite a 40:02 lot of songs in the movie I'm like that's a sample from this song That's a from that That's quite sort of But again 40:08 you know 89 that was pretty sort of on you know he's pretty on track with some 40:13 decent stuff I was thinking that while I was watching it today I was like "Oh I recognize a lot of these songs that that 40:18 now been sampled you know and then the Tone Lo things." Yeah Yep $15 million to 40:25 make this movie and it grossed nearly 80 million worldwide 1989 for a comedy 40:32 That's really good In the summertime too Think about that Came on August Yeah So usually I mean we're summertime you know 40:38 American cinemas I mean the world now but it's tentpole season especially in the 80s Yeah I was trying to We're 40:44 setting up we're sending out you know whatever the whatever the new Schwarzenegger whatever movies supposed to be coming out that time frame before 40:51 you know the superhero takeover we've had Yeah I was trying to so for it to go to $80 million I was trying to remember 40:58 I can't even remember that hitting cinemas here personally but I'm I'm going back a long way So I don't know if 41:04 I if it was if it was straight to video here is what I'm thinking it might have been Mhm I'm not if it you know 41:13 sometimes I talk about this with Scott where I live in a quite a small town I 41:19 don't live in London We don't all live you know we're not all I'm aware of this He's got 12 people and 37 sheep in his 41:27 town It's really tiny It's not far from the truth but if sometimes I'm like yeah certain things 41:32 don't make it to my necks And I can't really remember if that hit theaters here Plus make sense I mean 41:39 would a would a suburban movie about you know Chicago family really land in 41:45 England like would would a movie from your neck sure Maybe maybe in the cities 41:51 it was maybe on for a week or two but I don't remember it I grew up in a small 41:56 town too in Nebraska So like middle of the country So by the time things got to me it was years a decade pass Okay No 42:04 you can you can relate then Mhm Mhm But yeah sometimes I mention things and 42:09 people like "What really it didn't?" And I'm like "Yeah maybe in maybe in London but we're not all from London." Like 42:15 when I say I'm from New York everyone is city assume I'm dropping city and yeah I'm from New York City where about 42:20 there's more than city it's not the same thing but yeah I was trying to think I couldn't remember if that hit theaters 42:26 here but yeah that's still not bad 80 mil 42:31 1989 like I said in the summertime and it's a family comedy like the PG movies 42:36 usually so you go with inflation that's probably a few hundred million probably I guess I mean in American inflation right now it's like three billion I 42:42 think they would have made couple of couple of 42:48 I'm just saying for 25 this movie I've only been hearing about this today I've only been hearing billion dollar in 42:55 today's I've only been hearing about the egg thing today I don't really know what the deal with that [ __ ] You don't worry Just be glad you're in England Are youad 43:01 serious be glad you cut because they have better news than us He's glad I 43:06 don't know what the thing is I actually only heard about it today So I don't It's like a joke at this point A price 43:14 Basically the smart people with the red hats voted for the hot dog skinned guy 43:20 because she was going to bring Donald eggs and they've actually gone through the roof in his three weeks So uh yeah 43:27 racism is costly America's finding that out the hard way Oh man You know what 43:32 else kind of I Eggs in a can might be a smart thing if you got that You can just 43:39 buy just egg There's or tofu You don't need eggs You don't Anyway I always 43:45 noticed the fashion because I already brought up Lori Metaf's outfits Did you notice Uncle Bucks this was the first 43:51 time I've really noticed it His rings Yes He had like big old class rings and stuff Mhm And like a horseshoe Yes The 43:59 old Elvis The old Elvis horseshoe Mhm Mhm M 44:05 u couple there's just so much the attention to detail that they have on these films especially 44:12 you know even whether he's the writer or director It's I don't know it you just 44:19 don't realize it until you go back and watch it again Yeah And I think it's what informs 44:25 now that Steve and I are on the Brushwell STD journey You can you can instantly find a movie that's just 44:31 direct to video But no one gave a [ __ ] about it because it's missing all the accutramonts that come with a really 44:39 great designed film from that that the plate the china plates the way they have 44:44 everything hanging over the sink or I mean over the the stoves every little thing the way he dresses the stuff they 44:50 do everything has a place and it means something like when Marcy comes over or 44:56 when they catch or yeah she first comes through the door the the toys on the stairs going up there's just this thing 45:02 that says that that that one mom and dad are gone Uncle Buck is there and he's not exactly a clean freak And so you 45:09 could start to see the home flip into this decay of like just clutter And that 45:15 is really smart Most you know crappy shoots would just wouldn't even think about that It would just be like this 45:21 real clean sterile environment And they'd walk in you'd be like "Oh this feels like a play at a high school." And 45:26 it's it's just this there's just you talk with them There's little crumbs on the counter from him not cleaning up 45:32 after breakfast There's just these little touches that as you watch it more you start to see the real craftsmanship 45:38 and why these kind of movies last the test of time and you just are like they just feel like a warm blanket sometimes 45:44 cuz it reminds me of like when I watch it today I felt like I was back in the 80s like I felt like my parents like I 45:50 was in my living room watching this on a VHS like it just felt like a Sunday morning in the 1980s and this is what I 45:58 was going to watch and just I don't know there just it was a nice you know what we're going It's a nice warm blanket to 46:03 kind of forget about for two hours It really was You're brought back to that Yeah Like Chicago suburbs the house like 46:10 it Yeah It's very comforting It's like you're in this world now You're in the John Hughes world and it's someone who's 46:16 on a diet at the moment They're massive pancakes They look good Oh my god I 46:22 forgot that he uses the nose shot What was the griddle what i couldn't 46:27 What what did he use for the griddle part that's a fun thing Like Blackstone thinks they've got it in the market Mate 46:33 Uncle Buck was first Goddamn it I don't know where he got this griddle The griddle took up the island I don't know 46:40 It did I don't know what that was Or something I didn't recall I remember 46:45 that scene that he flips a pancake uh with the shovel and and the gag of that 46:51 But then I totally forgot that there was an entire stack giant stack of pancakes 46:57 on the table That was awesome It's just so Oh man sausages for days you know on 47:05 the table The amount of eggs The amount of eggs Oh my god And today's prices as 47:10 street Sorry guys I didn't mean to I didn't mean to upset you There's thousands of dollars in groceries right 47:16 there Oh my god I No it I loved the tiny urinals Oh I was going to say when he 47:22 need takes a knee I forgot He's like "How am I is is nowadays if a grown man 47:28 walked into a little kid's bathroom what a [ __ ] alarm bell would go off but he's kind of like looks down sees little 47:34 feet dangling He's like I use the bathroom He doesn't know where to put his cigar." Was that urinal thing really an issue 47:41 though can he just He's in an elementary school so they're all You could just You 47:46 just He's a big guy What is he 6'4 350 like it would spray all over It was just 47:53 a great gag right it was a good No I get the gag I was just a bit like "Wait a minute Can't you just go aim?" True Use 48:00 the sink like a real man Yeah Take a sh take a [ __ ] in the sink like a normal person would Come on Jesus What is this 48:08 do schools have tiny unit I literally I've never been in a boy Yes If you're Do schools have little little tiny 48:14 especially like when they have kindergarten like that they do have lower cuz they can't You're going to clean pee off the floor I didn't even 48:20 know if they had urinal or if the stall like the toilet stall you know So some 48:26 of the schools around where I'm at they had the bathroom inside is the bathroom 48:31 inside the classroom but they have little tiny toilets Oh So it's still it's still at their height because again 48:37 Mhm you're going to be cleaning bee for days or poop I mean just these kids can't get an inch up under the seat 48:43 You're in trouble You're going to have have a lot of Yeah A lot of janitors coming in every five minutes Johnny just 48:49 used a urine to look in Looks like Niagara Falls broke in there A I love 48:55 speaking of that I love when they're on the phone and he's talking to her cuz he has a few questions How's your plumbing there do you have a 49:01 plunger she's just like "Oh my god." I 49:06 also before they've even left I think he says that before they even left I eat a lot of cheese I don't Is that an allergy 49:12 is that an Oh my god I can't believe I have to leave my children with you Oh that's what the blue water's for Oh my 49:19 god And she's crying I'm so glad you're there with them Oh that the toilet seat 49:25 up with the dog I love the the fact that how they decide to you know to do the 49:30 the whole interchange where he asked you know how many times you feed a dog and she could have just said it but the best part is when she goes how many times do 49:37 you think you're supposed to feed a dog i just love the just it's just a great way of how you just change your dialogue 49:44 to add for the comedy right because we know that he as when he ask it we already know he's overfeeding the dog We 49:50 all know that's what's leading to But her than having him tell her how much he thinks he should feed the dog is where 49:56 we get the fun It's like four times just one Just one Oh that'll that'll explain it And it's like the pee in the lawn 50:02 just water So good It's also a time cuz I have a feeling I don't know maybe it's 50:08 just me but I think most people feed their dogs twice a day at least now say 50:14 that you're supposed to feed your dog when you eat I think that you know like some experts say like you're so if your dog's on a schedule when you sit down to 50:20 eat the dog eats that's why there's no begging at the table when you're done then like the dog learns that okay now 50:25 they're done kind of kind of thing So you the two times would be right Breakfast dinner and then you know people could stay home I guess three 50:32 times But but that in the 80s I feel like it was really normal You fed your dog once a day You just put food in the 50:38 bowl and yeah I think that was the dog was cute also with him sleeping with the kids and from the bed to the floor 50:44 Everybody including the dog ends up like on him Cute stuff He's a great uncle 50:51 like he may not know anything about kids but like he is really his street wise is 50:56 really kind of what these kids need Like he's you know yeah look he's doing the great thing where he's making moly coin 51:03 wash the dishes you know just put hair in your chest kind of thing you know that kind of mentality but at the end of 51:08 the day he really is building He's more involved with them than his own parents have been Oh 100% And I think that's 51:15 what really ends up and eventually what finally brings Tia around cuz she's just angry that they left Indianapolis She's 51:22 just pissed that at her age she has to start over But yet she's also learned how to be she's also learned how to take 51:28 care of her brothers and sisters Which this it's funny It almost feels like Tia was the oops child The other two were 51:36 the ones they planned Like it was like Tia we just made it out of high school She's why they got married She's why 51:42 they got married Exactly The other two were like "Hey let's have kids." Yeah that's a really good point She's like 51:47 "What a junior in high school or whatever it is and these kids like kindergarten or first grade you're like "Oh boy." 51:54 Several years later he is good with them I noticed that too 51:59 because I related to the I related to Buck cuz I don't have I'm kind of the crazy aunt like Buck Oh I'm hung over 52:06 today but I made it to your game or whatever Let's play with some scissors 52:11 Go run around But I wouldn't be as good as but like he's so good at relating to them cuz 52:18 he's kind of a big kid himself I suppose But um exactly he I'm the same I think 52:23 I'm a bit like that Yeah is great at this I'd be a bit I'm a bit like I get 52:28 [ __ ] done you know I may not do it the may not do with pants on but it gets 52:35 done Godamn it No No But I get stuck Excuse me sir Do you 52:40 have to mow your lawn without pants listen Listen All right I'm sweating 52:45 Balls out here My balls are sweat No idea lady I mean my nuts Sorry 52:51 Sorry Which side are you crap No I think John Candy I don't know He just feels like that every man that you would look 52:58 We're supposed to believe he's inept to be able to watch these kids But he's the perfect person He's the perfect person 53:04 to race He's like the original What's the one with Robin Williams he pretends to be the nanny Why am I blanking miss 53:09 Dowire He's like the Mr Dowire He's like "Hey yeah I don't I'm just gonna do this I don't know if this is the right way to 53:15 do it but we're gonna do it." Amy's making a breakfast He's I mean for this kid's birthday they don't even know when 53:21 his birthday is what he wants I guess getting them sticks now Like Jesus Christ that boy out of your ass 53:26 He's making panc more pancakes than anyone in the neighborhood could eat And you're just kind of like man what a 53:33 [ __ ] awesome uncle I did kind of like I did kind of like the drying the clothes in the microwave Fancy cuz as 53:40 the girl goes open the goddamn dryer blasting 53:48 Oh here's a quarter Why don't you go down the corner still get a ret off your face oh [ __ ] Melanoma No I forgot about 53:55 that Yeah cuz when I said that to you I was like that is from that right cuz 54:01 if it wasn't you'd have been like "What the hell is he talking about i have no proof but I feel like the mole thing 54:07 from this movie is what led to the joke of the mole on Fred Savage's face in the Austin Powers movies where he just can't 54:14 stop saying mole I feel like this was the genesis from it Like I just really do cuz one of the most memorable scenes 54:19 is him flipping that quarter to her and tell her to get it nod off her face I just feel like the genesis of that joke 54:26 That's like the thing in the Steve Martin movie Roxan as well where they're like don't look at his nose you know and then you can't not look at his nose sort 54:32 of thing That's the same sort of that that sort of joke But yeah when I said that to you cuz same I haven't seen the 54:38 movie for like over 20 years That was the first thing I thought of when you said Uncle Buck was Buck Melanoma I 54:45 thought I completely forgotten about it Yeah But that is a that's a great that's a great scene though as well talking 54:50 about what a great uncle he is and what a sort of good provider he really is and his you know his character that says a 54:57 lot about his character when he stands up to the teacher and says gives his little speech about her being a dreamer 55:03 and all that's boyfriend well yeah but when he says like she's six you know yeah she's 55:09 of course she's a dreamer of course she's a chatty little girl she's six I know you know so there's a lot there's 55:16 that type of scene in a lot of this kind of a movie like the you know the unprepared child career has to come in 55:22 and then they stand up to some you know with shitty teacher Yeah Yeah But yeah I 55:29 she he got called in about a six-year-old not taking her school career seriously He's like "She's 55:38 I love it." Like he tells a little kid "I'll go in there and soften her up for you." 55:43 And you can hear everything Yeah he's just sat out there And Scott you were going to bring up what he does to Tia's boyfriend I mean now granted that would 55:50 probably land him in jail right maybe But you know what what parent is going 55:55 to disagree with that right what a dick What a douche You know it kind of taught him a lesson kind of thing You know he 56:01 knew Look we all It's funny when we're in that age group right when we are teenagers we know exactly how we're 56:07 think Then when we get older that's like when we become protective Look at I know what the wolf is like I was the wolf I 56:13 know how to watch out for this You know what I mean you need to watch out who this kind of person is And you know she's going to Tia is always going to 56:20 fight it because she is pissed off and rightfully so I get it Uh especially for 56:26 girls You go through a lot in in that 10 year period of like anywhere from 12 to 25 that or 13 year I should say It's a 56:33 it's a tough go It's you you know you you start to go to battle with each other over boys and who 56:40 looks good and all and you have so much more pressure put on you in those ages as you're developing not only physically 56:47 but mentally like kids most boys like dick you know just let's throw rocks at each other you know dick jokes and throw 56:54 rocks at each other like we don't we still we haven't matured look at Steve and I we're still doing it now still 57:00 doing it now um so today at the move across country and also be responsible 57:05 to not really across country it's only a couple hours away but to then be responsible for your brothers and sisters but also I think listeners 57:11 should remember no cell phones no internet phone is all you knew each 57:16 other and once you moved out of town you were pretty much forgotten about cuz someone else new came around like you you weren't calling long distance to 57:23 talk for hours in the 80s you out of your mind how long that much that cost so for her to have to go through all 57:29 this and then feel this disconnect that her parents have kind of not only forgot 57:35 about her but I'm not forgetting about the brothers and sister you know and so Tia's obviously going to push push push 57:42 but Buck steps up for because he's just a good he's a good guy He's the funny thing about the whole movie is we open 57:48 up with him I'm not ready to be a father I'd like my own life I don't think I'd be good with kids and he completely proves that no you are the one person in 57:55 the movie who probably should have kids because you actually have a pretty good rapport with them and also a good idea 58:02 what it is to uh bring them up and and be there for them And that was I think that's what makes the movie so endearing 58:08 Yeah And I like that for great I like that little moment when he was on his own with the dog and he's smoking the 58:13 cigar and he's sort of talking about what people you know people used to say 58:19 about him having the freedom and being a fun guy and all this and now now they 58:24 they don't say it anymore and sort of like something a bit touching to that he's 58:30 realizing Yeah I mean how old is the oldest daughter supposed to be by the way 15 and he's 40 I think he says he 58:37 just so I think obviously she's so she's in that every every kid that 58:44 age is in that thing especially having two very a two brother and sister a lot 58:49 younger is on one hand you're supposed to be looking after them but then your parents are treating you like a kid as 58:55 well So she's got that that angst that teenage angst thing going on 59:01 And so I think Buck kind of he knows he he pretty much reads the 59:06 signals He does He knows what's going on Well he's you can get pregnant on on your parents' time but when I'm here you 59:12 or something to that effect And she's like he's like I don't care what you think I'm I'm responsible He's going to be honest He's given it to her straight 59:18 like when he says about bowling So it's been proven it's very unlikely to get pregnant at a bowling alley Yeah Or 59:25 something like that And then his girlfriend has been wanting to get married and have kids this whole time 59:32 And then finally by the end he's like "Why didn't we do this earlier?" And she's like "Oh my god I'm going to murder you." Yeah I think it just took 59:38 him to realize that he I think he was afraid I think there's a part of it that you know you can read into as you get 59:45 older He knows he's he loves his freedom but he knows he hasn't amounted to much 59:50 Although I will say I will say this that apartment across from Wrigley 59:55 Field he's making some good money like nowadays that's an expensive piece of property to have in shot in the Chicago 1:00:03 area to be across from Field He could have if he owned that he could he's making millions of dollars if he sold 1:00:08 that But anyway so I think he realizes that he hasn't grown up to be much and he's afraid that if he has kids they're 1:00:14 going to grow up to be nothing because of him So I think there's this real I don't you know he can he bullshits that I don't need to I you know I like my 1:00:20 freedom I like to be able to just put my golf clubs in the car and go play golf or bowl or whatever At the end of the day it's a fear that he realizes he 1:00:27 hasn't amounted to much and he doesn't want to bring kids into the equation and let them down and then them not amount 1:00:33 to much But then he realizes that actually he's the most suited person for 1:00:38 cuz yeah his brother's doing better than him His brother doesn't even know when his [ __ ] kids hockeyy's over with What to get him for his birthday 1:00:44 meanwhile he's making pancakes the size of [ __ ] Buicks and knocking out drunk 1:00:49 clowns which I [ __ ] love Yeah And protecting the I mean he Yeah Protecting 1:00:55 Tia from that shitty bug bug You had mentioned something about before cell 1:01:00 phones And I love all of the times that he he you know he really wants to go to the racetrack and he's he's always out 1:01:08 kind of trying to protect Tia and he has to bring the little kids and they're it's hilarious their conversations 1:01:14 They're great Yes there was there was little adults themselves They're just little adults in car seats They are That's why it's funny But Buck they're 1:01:21 driving around looking for Tia How did he know where this party in the woods 1:01:26 was he just comes upon it Cuz Buck's been to that party in the woods I guess 1:01:32 this isn't Buck's first time He knows He knows where people are partying You know where dad is probably more straight laced Mhm Buck is definitely He smokes 1:01:40 He dre Like Buck has had his time He knows you know he's been a fun guy He even said that No I doesn't he ask some 1:01:46 people he might I forget Yeah That was at the party There was a house party 1:01:52 which was even funnier He's like got his cigar and then he gets somewhere along the line he gets a beer He's like "You 1:01:58 guys know T you guys know Buck?" He's like drinking with him and they're like "What the [ __ ] going on here?" Yeah 1:02:06 Oh god I love Buck God he's I love Buck so much I forgot how much I really like this movie He's a great Yeah 1:02:13 W the clown The clown Um Mike Star who plays the clown He's been in he's in 1:02:20 Good Fellas He's in a ton of stuff cuz I actually had to look him up because obviously I can 1:02:26 recognize this voice Yeah I was I know that guy So I had to look that up His mouth is I could kind of tell from his 1:02:32 He's one of those character actor He's been in D He's in loads of stuff isn't he but sorry Yeah that was just But when 1:02:38 he But my favorite part is it's again it's just this direction is he gets punched and he goes back out of frame 1:02:44 but comes back into frame to get p and get punched It made me laugh I forgot how much fun I forgot the clown until he 1:02:52 shows up in the mouse car I remember I remember was about to happen and I just I laughed like I did back in 1989 where 1:02:58 I thought it was hilarious He's just bark just punched him and he goes backwards and the oh comes right back 1:03:05 almost like a weevil wobble like a cl like a clown Yeah Came right back 1:03:10 forward There were a few trunks like that A drunk clown though you know Classic Oh god it was so good It was so 1:03:17 much fun They don't do that anymore Like when he gets hit by the bowling ball There's a few times where they do that very It's like a style of the 80s in 1:03:24 comedy that we don't we don't really get anymore But a good but but a good one too It wasn't it didn't feel like old or 1:03:31 it was just a nice trope that that lands It's a good comedy bit that lands as 1:03:37 opposed to you know the old oh kick in the nuts you know that's always funny but you know certain things like pies in the face aren't funny unless you're in 1:03:43 the context like older films like you can watch the three stooges do it and it's hilarious because it's of a time 1:03:48 and you just love it but you know if I was watching Adam Sandler hit Rob Snider in the face of a pie like what the [ __ ] 1:03:54 are we doing this is 2025 You know what I just but this Uncle Buck thing this punch in the face go back and come back 1:04:00 It works It would work now in a movie If we saw that we we you'd laugh your ass off cuz it's just really good comedic 1:04:07 timing And Mhm Oh god John Hughes and he's dead too God damn We lost both 1:04:12 John's Yeah Oh yeah they are Yeah America's That's why it's going to [ __ ] 1:04:17 Yeah we need and back You're the only parent Scott What parenting like if this 1:04:23 movie were made now what are like some parenting trends that that that Uncle Buck would like butt up against today do 1:04:31 you think jeez I mean it's funny Him attacking the teacher is very 1:04:36 reminiscent of what things happen today but he had a very good reason for it right like she was being overly dramatic 1:04:42 with that principal about a six-year-old Nowadays kids aren't responsible for anything And so now it's like the parent 1:04:48 will ask you "What did you do what did I do to cause your student to try to stab someone with scissors i don't know 1:04:54 You're a psycho I don't know which one you want the answer to be So it would be different Would the kids be Would they 1:05:00 do anything fun if this movie is made today they'll be on their iPhones or playing video games right like Uncle Buck would probably be getting into 1:05:06 trouble He probably doing drugs in the bathroom It would be the It would probably be like the reverse He'd be at 1:05:11 the race If he go to the race horse he'd be like "Look kids here's some TV Here's some games Good luck I'm going to be 1:05:17 going play the the horses." It would be a different movie today It I don't think it would work I mean I'm sure they could 1:05:24 move it but I don't Would it have the heart would it have the story that we need for today you know would would we 1:05:31 get the message at all because everyone's all the time Like it literally is a screen epidemic that is 1:05:38 ruining kids Like it's this generation coming up I try to warn my students I know I'm still old man Shakespeare's the 1:05:45 sky But with AI and robotics that are advancing at lightning speed Mhm 1:05:52 If students don't have skills they are going to live with their parents for forever And that's really 1:05:59 the truth They have no skills A lot of things are going away I would call fallback jobs right working at working 1:06:05 at Walmart or working at a grocery store working anything that has like a register nowadays is being replaced 1:06:10 already by either selfch checkout or going to be replaced over here in America at least McDonald's in 1:06:16 California is already testing out robots with AI So you'll need three people to work there The manager to make sure no one robs the joint and then some guy who 1:06:23 can fix robots and maybe a programmer and that's it So if you don't like 1:06:28 school and you quit what are you going to do and kids these days don't want to do hard labor So they're not going to join somebody's plumbing or you know 1:06:36 they're not going to go do the old blue collar work because they don't actually want to do labor work So this film would 1:06:42 be different It'd be a lot different It'd be like Uncle Robot Buck or something like that You know what I mean i don't Well that or like trying to get 1:06:49 Insta famous or you know whatever Yeah Yeah And you know probably is probably trying to do that And then we get some 1:06:55 boyfriend who's trying to get her to only fans or something like you know you could probably move it that way You probably could But yeah I mean even with 1:07:02 Buck would would we allow you know he couldn't he wouldn't just be able to walk into a school there be it would be a different type of film And I just 1:07:09 don't think it would still have the same heart and comedic timing that Uncle Buck 1:07:14 in 1989 did because I it's one of those last few generations where you're a 1:07:20 latchy kid where you going outside of something you do going places like uh 1:07:26 Chuck-E-Cheese or I don't know if they have the equivalent over in UK but going places with your like bowling with your your family was something you did like 1:07:32 it was a thing we always did like you go out you want to do things being stuck in the house wasn't you know if you're 1:07:38 stuck in the house you played a few video games but you watch movies and you know you you play with your toys and 1:07:43 your friends and that's not the thing kids want to do any home and play video games and they just want to stay on the screens and so the the fun that we get 1:07:52 from the film of them going places Kids don't I guess it's probably a good thing They don't sneak out to try to drink 1:07:57 much anymore Like it's just everyone just stays home You know what I mean everyone's social without being social 1:08:03 They're on social media but they're not actually interacting with one another And so it would be a different kind of 1:08:08 movie like how Gabbuck would never go far He uses find a find a phone find You would Yeah Find her in a minute She 1:08:15 would be able to sneak out anyway Hilarious You wouldn't have to drive around in that car to try and find and 1:08:20 mall generation's gone away I think we are the last generation at least in America I know it's a more of American 1:08:25 thing We're the last of the mall generation really Maybe millennials maybe some you know probably some 1:08:32 millennials but after that this the mall culture is going everyone shops on Amazon I mean the malls are starting to disappear So that that I didn't even 1:08:39 have mall culture growing up I mean I didn't live in a city that had like a mall like that was can't spell So Steve 1:08:46 it's it's they have corn and that corn and Jesus I'm scared But I loved watching movies or but I didn't like 1:08:52 hang out at the mall cuz I just didn't live in a big enough city to have like a cool mall like that But yeah but even 1:08:59 that's you know gone away You know what I mean like the the the culture that we see in the film of students and and the 1:09:05 teenagers and even the young kids it's a it's almost like we're on Mars now on the opposite side Like kids these days 1:09:11 don't have any idea what that is like So it would be a very I mean you know what if someone could make a new Uncle Buck 1:09:17 and make it as good and relatable as today they should win the Academy Award because that is a stretch right right 1:09:24 Like some parents going to flip out about you're trying to make my kid fat with all these pancakes Like someone's going to have an issue with something 1:09:30 like that Like if anywhere shot that lady walks in maybe there's a homeowner with a gun She gets shot She walks in 1:09:37 Uncle Buck's got an AR-15 Yeah The neighbor that I mean he's smoking everywhere I noticed that He would be 1:09:44 vaping now Yeah that's what it be It be a big vapor I love Oh speaking of the the smoking 1:09:50 thing he's like "Oh I used to smoke cigarette I'm on I'm on a fiveyear something I used to smoke cigarettes and 1:09:55 now I smoke cigars and then after this it's going to be a pipe and then it's going to be chewing gum and then chewing 1:10:02 tobac Yeah I'm on a fiveyear plan." Yeah He just keeps going down from like the worst thing to She just She's just 1:10:09 looking at him like horrified I think she's also you have a five-year plan but it's about smoking What's your by your 1:10:15 financial point there was not a ton of trivia that I found about this movie but the exterior of the house was an actual 1:10:23 house but the inside was like all of the sets were built in a 1:10:29 school gym including their home Like their home was a set built in a school gymnasium That is such good lighting I 1:10:37 know I know this sounds kind of put on my beret and smoke a scar but cuz if you 1:10:43 because you know you can when you see a set on a TV show you know they're on a stage like you can just feel even no 1:10:49 matter what the lighting is you just know But for this if you had told me that if I would have guessed 100% that 1:10:55 was in someone's home and they just you know they rented it out for whatever amount of time they needed to shoot I would not have said that that was a set 1:11:02 That's really well lit They did a great job of making that feel like that was in the suburbs of Chicago I would have 100% 1:11:08 guaranteed before you're inside You you get that feel that you're in someone's home I thought so too Yeah So there's 1:11:15 some lost in translation You know how they rename movies for other countries 1:11:20 mhm Right Alternative alternative title Alone with our uncle Oh that sounds 1:11:27 pretty sinister Yeah it does I like that Now it is a horror movie 1989 Ah no big 1:11:33 deal I don't know what countries but I think that got lost in translation Back the reverse Alone with our 1:11:40 uncle Just couldn't just say buck or just uncle That's weird Alone with alone 1:11:46 with our alone with our uncle I missed it I think But I guess there's a the freeze frame of John Candy 1:11:54 in the ending scene is also used in planes trains and automobiles Yeah Yeah 1:11:59 Yeah I remember I'm gonna have to I'm gonna have to take note of that when I watch Planes Trains and Automobiles Now 1:12:06 did Winona Ryder ever be in any one of John Hughes movies or does he have a thing with her because this could just be pure coincidence but I noticed the 1:12:12 elementary school's name was Winona I know I thought that I was like that's got to be something like Winona Like 1:12:18 that's like a very specific name right Scott that is hilarious that you brought that up I just thought that today Winona 1:12:26 Ryder was the first choice for the role of Tia Oh Look at that Every now and 1:12:31 again the old man brings something up He had seen I didn't even notice that I didn't John had seen her in Beetlejuice 1:12:37 the year before Oh but she was working on Heathers so she was not available for 1:12:42 this I think she did the right thing Yeah And I think the girl who played Tia was great I think she you know that may 1:12:48 be the only role she ever was really known for you know that we all remember I thought she was really good as this 1:12:53 bratty I did Holy cow I thought she was horrible till the last five minutes So 1:12:58 yeah Yeah I could but that's that's a good role right that's like good ratchet where you're like "Fuck this [ __ ] I hope I hope they throw her out the 1:13:04 window." Then you're like "Man that's a really good acting job If I if I have a visceral feeling about an actress I want 1:13:10 her dead on set." You're like "You're doing a great job ma'am." His other muses were also considered I guess for 1:13:16 that role Ali Shiti and Molly Ringwald Oh makes sense But yeah Yeah Yeah Makes 1:13:22 sense Could have seen that Yeah Rick Moran has turned down the role of the dad 1:13:27 H You know what he used he would have been underused in that role Not much of a role is it yeah I I That makes sense 1:13:33 You know that's just Yeah you need someone who's because you want everyone to remember John Candy Who cares about 1:13:39 the dad right cuz John you don't be like "Oh wait Rick Morannis gonna pop back in here at any time or you know like what 1:13:46 if Bill Murray was the dead?" Like is Bill showing up any moment cuz we can have a little comedy here However Steve 1:13:52 Martin was also considered for the dad for the Jesus Christ For the dad waste 1:13:57 for the dad I know But literally like I said have got done more with it if Right You're right You're right You know what 1:14:04 there could have been a fun tongue-in-cheek moment about playing Strange and Automobiles in that in if he 1:14:10 was the father there for the walk- on roll That could have been fun Yeah that could have been fun Literally every 1:14:16 actor under the sun it seems was thrown around for the role of Buck Uh like 1:14:23 literally like Bill Murray Jim Belalushi Dudley Moore Danny Devito Dan Akroy George W Michael Katon Ed O'Neal Robin 1:14:30 Williams Jack Nicholson uh Joe Peshy Tom Hanks Kurt Russell and oh I took not 1:14:38 Kurt Russell and and Martin Short were considered and which is weird They were 1:14:43 in Captain Ron together but Joe Peshy a short Italian Hey hey hey just let's go to the 1:14:51 racetrack Hey Okay Okay Okay Hey listen You ever see a [ __ ] hatchet huh you little 1:14:57 piece of [ __ ] That would have been great Joe Peshi's the best the best option because it's 1:15:02 the difference right john C is what 6'4 350 Joe Peshi's two for two pounds You 1:15:08 know Devito too like he was one and he's like did you say Dudley Moore dudley Moore Wow Kurt Russell seems out of 1:15:16 place How does Kurt Russell as Snake Bliss get becomes too Mr 1:15:22 reliable It have just done it wouldn't it have been great I can't see it but but I can see him as you know like the 1:15:28 Jack Burton irresponsible fun uncle kind of true something like that But there was one 1:15:35 actor that they were pretty seriously considering and he's very similar I'm curious if you guys can guess it They they were going to actually John was 1:15:42 considered for another one of this actor's roles but died before he could do it So the the role I'm referring to 1:15:48 is from 194 Oh Oh Oh Is it Lou 1:15:56 who's the other heavyweight guy named louis what's his last name he just recently passed away Uh oh Well it's 1:16:02 clearly not cuz you would have already told me that's him It's not him It's not him but he was in um You know who I'm talking about right coming to America Um 1:16:08 Louis Anderson is who you're thinking Louis Anderson It's not him but it is a heavy white guy 1:16:15 It's not dam He was in the number two TV show from 1989 1:16:23 What bill Cosby to Oh John Goodman John Goodman Oh okay Okay Yeah cuz he said 1:16:30 that time You know he might have been he he probably would have done a very good job Another reliable guy that I don't 1:16:36 think any of the people we've named outside maybe some funny things that could have changed I don't think anyone's better than Giant Candy And I 1:16:42 you know I mean I just think that was the that was the right role I think John Candy was the perfect person 1:16:50 100% There were TV shows There was actually I did see this Two two TV shows 1:16:57 Did you guys know that i only knew cuz I was looking it up today I was like "Holy 1:17:02 [ __ ] they made an Uncle Buck TV show." Like holy cow Two of them one of them in 1990 that was on CBS and it starred 1:17:10 Kevin Meanie as Buck a slob who drinks and smokes I don't even think I know who Kevin Meanie is But then there was a 1:17:17 more recent one with like famous people in it a 2016 version on ABC It was 1:17:23 another It was an adaptation with a black cast with Mike Apps playing Uncle 1:17:28 Buck Oh Mike I still think you need someone heavy right i still just you need makeup 1:17:36 You need someone like someone with some stature a little bit of you need to have some weight to them That I think what 1:17:42 sells the Uncle Buck whole personality right like it just you know you know 1:17:47 he's not taking care of himself too much but just I don't know that the heavier set funny uncle I think that works a 1:17:52 little bit better Not that Mike Eps isn't a funny guy but I just don't see Mike Eps you know what I mean neither of 1:17:59 these were successful but and James Leisure and Neil Long like all three of those are like very well-known black 1:18:05 actors but neither one of those were successful You know you know this and 1:18:10 this is you know not against I you know everything I have no problem with that that option but it is it's a different 1:18:17 we talk about because Tarantino wanted to redo his last movie being Reservoir Dogs with an all black cast which changes the entire 1:18:25 um thread line of what Reservoir Dogs would be right because you're now telling from a completely different set 1:18:31 of circumstances The way that the not trying to side but when we're shooting 1:18:36 at cops white people shooting at cops is different than if we would we have waited till Joe like there's things that 1:18:43 now change the tone of the film when you change the race So but does Uncle Buck 1:18:49 land the same cuz it's a different experience in the suburbs for black people in America It's not the same you 1:18:54 know So maybe when you're selling Uncle Buck one does a black audience care 1:19:00 about the movie Uncle Buck It's not a story that probably really reaches out to them because it's all white There's 1:19:07 Is there any black people in Uncle Buck i can't remember Maybe in the bowling alley There's no black people in hardly 1:19:13 like most of this is this is actually a criticism Oh is it there's just not 1:19:19 necessarily Uncle Buck but now that I'm thinking through John There's no black people in any of them 1:19:27 Yeah I mean so the I guess Yeah But but so now you think okay so now we got Soell one is the story going to land 1:19:33 with a black audience cuz now it's what you're selling it to And is a white audience going to want to watch a story 1:19:38 that they know but it's completely different Like now it's foreign to them as well Not that they can't coincide 1:19:44 right but you're expecting Uncle Buck You're expecting John Candy And then you know nothing gets my cup That's Those 1:19:49 are big shoes to fill Yeah Right Those are just big shoes to fill The story isn't super unique There have been 1:19:55 several Oh yeah You know Yeah But then we're alone with our uncle and they turn into a horror movie Uncle B And 1:20:02 now you'd be making it on that' be a nostalgic trip for the adults really more than it would be aimed at Yeah kids 1:20:09 at that time I mean we're going to have to start wrapping things up You guys I can't thank you enough for D for this 1:20:15 letting us derailing your show No I I love it What you guys have closing thoughts on Uncle Buck 1:20:22 i'll let my esteemed gentleman from the UK go first Yeah I mean it's a classic 1:20:28 slice of 80s nostalgia Happy people with happy problems So it's that comforting 1:20:33 kind of movie There's nothing too nothing too edgy nothing overly rounchy about it It's a family movie It's a 1:20:40 family comedy which I'm not sure they even make now really Yeah You You're not wrong I don't 1:20:46 can't think you know I don't I think you you genuinely could sit together as a 1:20:52 family and watch this and the adults aren't chewing their nails thinking "Oh here comes that scene." 1:20:59 Or you know I mean I mean even the the washing machine scene would just go 1:21:04 where people it doesn't matter It's it's irreverent It's not like everyone's going to suddenly be like you know the 1:21:12 movies Yeah We've all sat with our parents and watched a movie and suddenly there's nudity or there's something and 1:21:18 everyone feels completely awkward I mean even in like Ghostbusters there's a scene where a ghost is given down acro 1:21:24 with a [ __ ] Do you know what I mean so that you can there are there are movies where that's the baby No but 1:21:30 there are movies where there's that awkwardness and cuz I But I think this is one of those movies where there's 1:21:36 something for everyone like Fatal Attraction like Yeah You send down your parents Yeah Exactly Police procedural 1:21:45 But there there's something for everyone in there you know You got the little kids you got the teenager and you got the adults And then you got the uncles 1:21:51 and aunties like "Ah so yeah." So yeah I'm like I'm something for us too I am 1:21:57 really quickly Steve To your point about the one of the things I had kind of forgotten until you were talking about 1:22:03 oh there's stuff for the adults the the sequence where he's talking with his 1:22:09 girlfriend on the phone I think and they have names for her her private parts 1:22:15 right and he's "No that's what we called your boobs." And then Felix Felix jumped 1:22:20 to the cat outside Brilliant It's the little red Corvette It's what 1:22:25 it is It's it's it's it's how you you make an innuendo without hitting people 1:22:31 over the head with a hammer and perverse and discussing can you can have these fun moments that everyone's going to 1:22:36 laugh at but but you don't have to just be like we're going to shoot the P word You just you just cut to who let who let 1:22:43 the cat out we don't have a cat Get out of here Just a great joke It is Yeah So that's 1:22:50 the thing about it you know There is something for everyone and it's not uncomfortable for anyone and it's it's 1:22:57 just a fun time and that's why that stood the test of time probably 1:23:03 because I don't think I've I've ever met anyone who hasn't seen and doesn't like it It's not good point Yeah it's one of 1:23:10 those movies that we all sort of and it's not necessarily nostalgia because I 1:23:15 bet you there's kids who could watch it today and enjoy it but you know so yeah 1:23:20 for me that's a just a solid bit of family entertainment and that's very rare these days That's no 1:23:26 wonder we look back Mhm Well said sir So indeed 1:23:32 anything to add Scott or where should we child of an 80s being a child of the 80s this is just such a great movie As I 1:23:38 said earlier John Candy this he's brilliant The beginning of McCauley Kulkin as a little kid I know Steve 1:23:44 doesn't like him but he hates kids anyways But this is it's it's like when Steve and I talk about action movies 1:23:50 right like you you want your your movies to kind of move quick This movie does exactly what it's supposed to We go we 1:23:57 we we get to tell a story We go on a journey but the jokes keep coming and we 1:24:03 and it doesn't feel like you're just like "When is this thing gonna [ __ ] end?" Like it just keeps moving from a 1:24:09 beat to a beat Funny stuff innuendos things here things there By the time 1:24:15 you're done you're like "Oh my god that was a lot of fun." You forget how good this kind of movie is And you start to 1:24:20 realize of all the blueprints we've taken in Hollywood where all we do is now superhero movies out the ass Why 1:24:27 aren't move like why aren't we looking back at movies like this and not remaking them but taking their beats and 1:24:33 their structure and go now we can try to this is how you're supposed to make this is how the sausage should be made for 1:24:39 comedies for family comedies and we don't do that anymore And that's kind of a disappointment and a disservice to 1:24:44 people because this is the this is the like Steve said this is the perfect movie for a family I can show this to my 1:24:49 grandkids and not worry about it And I know if I show it to them young like 1:24:55 color games they're going to laugh at the kids stuff and the adults are going to laugh at the adult stuff and we're all going to have a good time Have some 1:25:00 popcorn and we're all going to be like great night You know like they'll laugh at oh he said [ __ ] Like we all did when we were kids He said nuts and balls Of 1:25:07 course you know you're going to laugh But then when you get to the kitty part the adults will laugh and think that's funny And the kids were like "I don't 1:25:12 worry about it It's the cat joke." You know what I mean like that's fun for everybody And I just I don't know that 1:25:18 you miss the star magnetism of people like a John Candy We don't have that anymore We don't we were missing some of 1:25:24 these star people who command a scene like when you you know you see a John 1:25:30 Candy would be like man that was funny like playing strange and automobiles you could watch that completely different even when he does his little cameo in 1:25:36 the end of Home Alone you know the the poker band driving her home He's just great in everything he does And then of 1:25:42 course the great outdoors with Dan Akrite I mean [ __ ] such a good fun 1:25:48 time of these movies with an amazing guy and it it's a slice of our youth but I 1:25:55 really feel like it's a missing piece in today's cinema that has not been filled 1:26:01 and no one is filling this this void of the comedy that would bring families together to go to a movie together 1:26:08 You're either watching kids movies like uh Disney movies or you're that's it you know you're not getting the John These 1:26:15 are lowbudget movies too So I don't know why they aren't you know I guess sort of 1:26:20 a double thing here where I mean you you did have like School of Rock Yeah Yeah Okay Yeah But you could almost say Jack 1:26:27 Black would be a good but that's a great pick right there So it's I think a lot of these comedy 1:26:35 guys they just they just milked it so quickly you know Will Ferrell Kevin Hart 1:26:40 all these guys they just milked it so quickly that even they didn't want to do it anymore Mhm Yeah You look at what 1:26:47 Will Ferrell's doing now you know he's trying to distance himself from you know 1:26:53 he's doing he's trying to spread his wings and do other things because they just milk the comedy thing so much So 1:26:59 yeah would Yeah I mean I guess we don't know because we lost John Candy but you 1:27:06 know what would what would he have gone on to do i don't know You know but also this type of person we don't have obese 1:27:13 stars Very very that's that's an that 1:27:18 kind of thing You have to be very pretty and not really that good of an actor Yeah I think Bill Murray said something 1:27:25 recently in an interview about what funny is is It's not about trying to be funny It's about playing straight Being 1:27:32 funny is playing it straight And John Candy plays it straight Bill Murray plays straight That's what makes them funny It's when you react to something 1:27:39 with some sar sarcasm but you're doing it straight That's why people laugh because you're like "Oh my god that's 1:27:44 kind like Steve Carell a little bit does." You know unless he's doing you know the uh uh the movies with Will 1:27:51 Pharaoh they're just losing their minds on the you know that those are funny too But um you know we don't everyone's 1:27:57 trying to play things for huge laughs or you know slapstick stuff and you don't necessarily need to do that We don't 1:28:03 have we're going to lose Bill Murray soon We're going to lose some of these these greats and they're going to be gone forever and there's no one to fill 1:28:09 the void There is no one to fill that void for for that kind of comedy You know what I mean at least at least in 1:28:14 America I don't know maybe there's some good English you know comedians could do it but American comedians don't feel like we have anybody to fill the void of 1:28:22 these comedic actors on screen that you know even Jim Car's pulled himself away you know I mean I mean again he was 1:28:29 great at all the stuff he does but we don't have anybody left really who's 1:28:34 going to fill these voids of the people who we could have a John Candy or a Bill Murray or Dan Akro We we're losing them 1:28:40 because there that's not the style of comedy we do anymore right there's a actually I can think of a fair number of 1:28:45 again they're not young they're like middle-aged now but like the Kristen Wigs and the Kate McKinnons and Amy 1:28:52 Polar like those kind of a lot of the women much anymore because we're losing cuz we don't everyone wants like 1:28:59 unfortunately everyone wants the dick and fart jokes which they work at times but not if everyone's doing them if 1:29:05 everyone's doing them you lose any of the fun that used to be what an Adam Sandler movie used to be cuz he was one 1:29:11 of the you know the few people who who were in that realm of comedy But if everyone's doing that then it's just 1:29:16 then it's the same thing It's just a retread Now you're like "Oh who's going to do the best dick and fart joke?" But then I think also with the climate we're 1:29:23 in in Hollywood those these movies they don't they don't make enough money 1:29:28 People are kind of scared to to you know I don't know Like it's funny though because it 1:29:35 doesn't like this movie made it it was made for $15 million The Breakfast Club 1:29:41 $1 million That's insane Crazy Insane But that's the thing 1:29:47 These these fil these sort of films can't they can't make the they can't make the money now That's why we have 1:29:54 that's why we're in the situation we're in with with blockbusters and Marvel and all this stuff is because they need that 1:30:01 billion They want to hit that billion dollar marked and they but they haven't got them guarantees anymore 1:30:08 fortunately they're losing money you know So you think they would stream it 1:30:13 we'd be able to at least do it on those right if you're going to turn their backs on that bit as well 1:30:19 Well because it's such a poor product coming out in the comedy realm Exactly You know but you know a a comedy movie 1:30:27 that costs 11 million making 800 million just is not going to 1:30:34 happen anymore Yeah you're probably right you know and I and I think and and and they can't even they can't even make 1:30:40 that money with a sure bet Now you know like the Superman movie that's coming out this year I mean part of me is I 1:30:48 hope it I hope it fails so we can bring it down Bring it down Start making 1:30:54 movies that cost less money Yeah Yeah That's we need it because you know that's the well's 1:30:59 running dry on all them ideas and you're going to have to sort of start listening to people who've got no ideas and 1:31:06 stories and stuff you know maybe I know it's bit naive of me to think that we 1:31:11 could do that but I yeah I mean do you really think as a society we're moving towards listening to the smart people or 1:31:17 no I wasn't going there but not in America we [ __ ] well I just like to your point about oh listening you know 1:31:23 people that have creative ideas and this and I think the wrong people run Hollywood I think the wrong people 1:31:29 Hollywood should do this If you're going to run a studio run it like a football team You own it so run it But put people 1:31:36 in place who know what the [ __ ] they're doing Mhm Dallas Cowboys that's just going to go receive that Dallas Cowboys have a shitty owner in Jerry Jones And I 1:31:42 hate the Cowboys anyway so I'm glad they're doing bad But they always hire somebody who kisses Jerry's ass and he basically runs it and he's out of touch 1:31:48 with the team Mhm When you have someone who was like in the Patriots you own it 1:31:53 and you let someone like Bill Bich run it and look what the production is So get someone in there who you know can 1:32:00 smooth and get money and yada yada yada but know your [ __ ] lane Let the real 1:32:05 people who know what they're doing do the job and let them create and stay the [ __ ] out of their way But they don't 1:32:11 They keep getting in the way and that's why we get terrible product That's why we remake 20,000 things What who no was 1:32:18 begging for any remakes Thankfully they were It was a joke but someone they were going to remake American Psycho with Austin Butler We don't need a remake It 1:32:25 was perfect the way it is I don't need to see It was It ended up being a joke but at the time for a while people were 1:32:30 like there's been talk of um Kurt Russell's son reprising his role in a remake of Escape from New York I don't 1:32:37 need an Escape from New York remake I am happy with Escape from New York as it is 1:32:43 You do not need to remake it Any of these movies find something new Give me something new What's What else can you 1:32:49 come up with besides Escape from New York what else you got in your well there what else give me something new Yeah Spend less Spend less but make more 1:32:56 Yes Mhm Let people in with some ideas but you know that's a whole tangent because all the creatives are working in 1:33:03 gaming now They're not working in Hollywood And oh so that that's just another point Yeah Oh god we could talk 1:33:10 Or they're working in television too Some of the streaming TV is a lot better than some of the movies we get nowadays There's just some really good stories 1:33:16 being told I just think this we're in a very a time of mediocre product and 1:33:21 everyone's sitting at home Movies are found at the cinema Mhm You know films 1:33:26 that are films that are critically wellreceived aren't making the money So they're flops right but they're not 1:33:32 flops cuz they suck They flop because no one's going to the cinema which is a whole another thing But when you've gone 1:33:40 to see you can only watch a caped guy throw someone into a building so many times before it just becomes completely 1:33:45 redundant However watch a movie for an hour and a half of a guy just picking up people at the thread Just that's his 1:33:50 whole thing You can do you can do that You can do that every week Do that every week now But what you can't do is go see 1:33:57 films like Uncle Buck is my point Uncle Buck Yeah And I like like Yeah 89 It was 1:34:02 I mean listeners if you haven't seen Uncle Buck in a minute I would consider this your sign to do so because we all 1:34:08 need some more John Candy in our lives Yes Yes And um is a great comedic writer 1:34:14 He really is I mean he has some other issues obviously we've kind of unearthed a little bit but his writing is for 1:34:20 comedy is it really is Yeah He's he it feels effortless right like just you 1:34:26 know you're in certain hands of certain directors writers you it's effortless You don't even realize how good they are 1:34:31 That's how good they are at right like you just sit there you go you laugh you go it's in that after you watch it it's 1:34:37 in that retro when you go back you go "Holy [ __ ] that was
