- 0:26Hello friends, it's Sean here and it is Monday.
- 0:30It is the 23rd Music. of December and yes, it is
- 0:34decidedly Christmassy around here.
- 0:36How exciting. This is the eve of Christmas Eve
- 0:40and for the next three days in the lead up to and on Christmas
- 0:43Day, we are going to read about that incredible Christmas story.
- 0:48That story where the God of the universe says I need humanity to
- 0:53know how much I love them. So I'm not going to tell them.
- 0:56I'm not going to send a message. I myself am going to go in the
- 1:00form of this Christmas babe. And this is the story that we
- 1:05celebrate. This is not just the story.
- 1:07This is the incredible reality that we are celebrating over the
- 1:11next few days here each day as we are going to read the story
- 1:15together. So you're ready.
- 1:18Put down all the busyness of the day.
- 1:21Open up your heart to the incredible wonder of this time,
- 1:24and let's read together the first half of Luke.
- 1:28Luke 1, verses 1 to 45. Many people have set out to
- 1:43write accounts about the events that have been fulfilled among
- 1:45us. They use the eyewitness report
- 1:49circulating among us from the early disciples.
- 1:52Having carefully investigated everything from the beginning, I
- 1:56also have decided to write an accurate account for you, Most
- 2:00Honourable Theophilus, so you can be certain of the truth of
- 2:05everything you were taught. When Herod was King of Judea,
- 2:10there was a Jewish priest named Zechariah.
- 2:13He was a member of the Priestly Order of Abuja and his wife
- 2:17Elizabeth was Auster from the priestly line of Aaron.
- 2:20Zechariah and Elizabeth were righteous in God's eyes, careful
- 2:24to obey all of the Lord's commandments and regulations.
- 2:28They had no children because Elizabeth was unable to
- 2:31conceive, and they were both very old.
- 2:34One day Zechariah was serving God in the temple, for his order
- 2:38was on duty that week. As was the custom of the
- 2:41priests, he was chosen by lot to enter the sanctuary of the Lord
- 2:44and burn incense. While the incense was being
- 2:48burned, a great crowd stood outside praying.
- 2:52While Zechariah was in the sanctuary, an Angel of the Lord
- 2:56appeared to him, standing to the right of the incense.
- 2:59Older Zachariah was shaken and overwhelmed with fear when he
- 3:03saw him, but the Angel said, Don't be afraid Zachariah, God
- 3:08has heard your prayer. Your wife Elizabeth will give
- 3:12you a son, and you are to name him John.
- 3:16You will have great joy and gladness, and many will rejoice
- 3:21at his birth, for he will be great in the eyes of the Lord.
- 3:25He must never touch wine or other alcoholic drinks.
- 3:29He will be filled with the Holy Spirit even before his birth,
- 3:34and he will turn many Israelites to the Lord their God.
- 3:39He will be a man with the spirit and power of Elijah.
- 3:43He will prepare the people for the coming of the Lord.
- 3:46He will turn the hearts of the fathers to their children, and
- 3:50he will cause those who are rebellious to accept the wisdom
- 3:54of the godly. Zechariah said to the Angel, How
- 3:58can I be sure this will happen? I'm an old man now, and my wife
- 4:03is also well along in years. Then the Angel said, I am
- 4:08Gabriel. I stand in the very presence of
- 4:12God. It was he who sent me to bring
- 4:15you this good news. But now, since you don't believe
- 4:19what I said, you will be silent and unable to speak until the
- 4:24child is born, for my words will certainly be fulfilled at the
- 4:28proper time. Meanwhile, the people were
- 4:33waiting for Zachariah to come out of the sanctuary, wondering
- 4:35why he was taking so long. When he finally did come out, he
- 4:40couldn't speak to them. Then they realised from his
- 4:43gestures and his silence that he must have seen a vision in the
- 4:47sanctuary. When Zachariah's week of service
- 4:50and the temple was over, he returned home.
- 4:53Soon afterward, his wife Elizabeth became pregnant and
- 4:58went into seclusion for five months.
- 5:01How kind the Lord is, she exclaimed.
- 5:05He has taken away my disgrace of having no children.
- 5:10In the sixth month of Elizabeth's pregnancy, God sent
- 5:14the Angel Gabriel to Nazareth, a village in Galilee, to a virgin
- 5:19named Mary. She was engaged to be married to
- 5:22a man named Joseph, a descendant of King David.
- 5:26Gabriel appeared to her and said greetings.
- 5:29Favoured woman, the Lord is with you.
- 5:34Confused and disturbed, Mary tried to think what the Angel
- 5:37could mean. Don't be afraid Mary, the Angel
- 5:41told her. For you have found favour with
- 5:44God. You will conceive and give birth
- 5:47to a son, and you will name him Jesus.
- 5:52He will be very great and will be called the Son of the Most
- 5:56High. The Lord God will give him the
- 5:59throne of his ancestor David, and he will reign over Israel
- 6:04forever. His Kingdom will never end.
- 6:09Mary asked the Angel. But how can this happen?
- 6:14I am a virgin, The Angel replied.
- 6:18The Holy Spirit will come upon you and the power of the Most
- 6:22High will over shadow you. So the baby to be born will be
- 6:27holy and he will be called the Son of God.
- 6:31What's more, your relative Elizabeth has become pregnant in
- 6:35her old age. People used to say she was
- 6:38barren, but she has conceived a son and is now in her 6th month.
- 6:44For the word of God will never fail, Mary responded.
- 6:50I and the Lord's servant, may everything you have said about
- 6:55me come true. And then the Angel left her.
- 7:00A few days later, Mary hurried to the Hill Country of Judea to
- 7:04the town where Zechariah lived. She entered the house and
- 7:08greeted Elizabeth. At the sound of Mary's greeting,
- 7:11Elizabeth's child leapt within her and Elizabeth was filled
- 7:16with the Holy Spirit. Elizabeth gave a glad cry and
- 7:19exclaimed to Mary. God has blessed you above all
- 7:24women, and your child is blessed.
- 7:27Why am I so honoured that the mother of my Lord should visit
- 7:31me? When I heard your greeting, the
- 7:34baby in my womb jumped for joy. You are blessed because you
- 7:40believe that the Lord would do what He said.
- 7:43Ah, Jesus, as we prepare to
- 7:56celebrate your birth in just a couple of days, we rejoice in
- 8:01what you have done, Your long laid plans carefully mapped out
- 8:07for this moment in history when You would come to be born to us,
- 8:13to save us from our sins, to live a life amongst us.
- 8:16What an incredible thing. And we see your Spirit so active
- 8:23in these women, so profoundly ready to take their part in your
- 8:28great plan and to serve you in this way.
- 8:32Lord, give us to that faith and that readiness.
- 8:37But most of all, Lord, I pray that you would open our hearts
- 8:41to the wonder and amazement of this story, that you, the living
- 8:46God of the universe, mighty and greatly to be revered, would
- 8:53come into our story because you first loved us.
- 9:00Our Lord, prepare our hearts in the coming days to receive this
- 9:03gift, and we pray all of this in your redeeming name, Jesus,
- 9:08Amen.
