Transcript
- 0:00Hello, welcome back, everybody. Welcome back to the CAT Scan
- 0:03Guru podcast. What is going on, everybody?
- 0:08So glad that summer's coming. I am just ready for it because
- 0:12I'm ready for warmer weather. And you know, when you are over
- 0:1645 and you're going through perimenopause, like, you know,
- 0:20covering up for the winter is just not a thing for me.
- 0:22And I am just so over it. So I am like done and ready for
- 0:28summer. So yes, so, so having some good
- 0:32stuff coming to the YouTube channel, I know I say this on
- 0:36every podcast episode, but want to kind of do a little
- 0:39housekeeping before we get into the episode.
- 0:41And yeah, putting some more educational stuff on there
- 0:44because it's been highly requested.
- 0:45Also, I have put out a CT protocols guide.
- 0:52So it is 10 easy CT protocols that I have put together.
- 0:57It's just merely a reference that you can use while you're
- 1:01training. It's for new CT technologists.
- 1:04It's like a survival guide. So it gives you like the core
- 1:07basics of some of the main exams that we do in CT.
- 1:11So I've paired it up with two different courses plus an audio
- 1:15series that you can purchase. They're available in two
- 1:19different versions. You can get a physical copy of
- 1:23the book plus the courses in the audio series, or you can get a
- 1:28digital version of the protocol guide along with the two courses
- 1:32and audio series. So the two courses are a
- 1:35contrast course and a common CT exam and protocols course.
- 1:41So it's basically devised on most of the things that I have
- 1:45in the guide where you can listen to it on the go and it'll
- 1:49provide a good resource for you, especially in your training.
- 1:53And then there's a 10 episode audio series where you can
- 1:56listen to that on the go on how to dominate your CT training.
- 1:59All good stuff. So either the digital copy of
- 2:04the guide or a physical copy, whichever 1 is your preference.
- 2:07They're all available in my show notes, notes available for
- 2:10purchase right now. So go get you a guide and get
- 2:13you some courses. OK?
- 2:15Also make sure you guys follow me on TikTok.
- 2:17I'm post a lot of protocol videos daily on different types
- 2:22of protocols. I kind of do like short
- 2:24breakdown on my YouTube channel. I am starting to create a
- 2:28playlist where I take a protocol and I do a longer form breakdown
- 2:33of that protocol. So that is something new that
- 2:35I'm going to be starting here pretty soon.
- 2:38So make sure you guys check it on that.
- 2:40OK, so all lots of good stuff. Everything is in the show notes.
- 2:43So make sure you get in on all your CT needs as far as
- 2:48elevating your training. So in today's episode, we're
- 2:51going to be talking and diving into why speed is overrated in
- 2:57CT OK? Now I'm going to kind of go into
- 3:01detail on what I mean about this, OK?
- 3:03So we have to break the obsession with speed in CT
- 3:08because I know that is a thing, OK?
- 3:10And why it hurts the newer texts, OK?
- 3:14So when it comes to speed, you know, I think it's praised more
- 3:19than the understanding of how to perform these CT exams
- 3:25correctly, how to center correctly, how to administer
- 3:28contrast safely, things of that sort.
- 3:30And I think the problem is, is that speed is praised more like,
- 3:35oh, you're working faster. That means you're, you're
- 3:38catching on, you're learning more this and that, which is not
- 3:43100% the case for most new CT technologists.
- 3:47Because I, what I see is, is that the newer techs are rushing
- 3:53to match the speed and the timing of more experienced
- 3:57people. Now, I always take those texts
- 3:59aside and I said, listen, you don't need to match my speed,
- 4:02OK? What you need to do do is you
- 4:05need to understand why you're doing this exam, why we give
- 4:09contrast at a certain timing and making sure that the way your
- 4:14exam is set up is correctly in your bin.
- 4:16All the correct anatomy. You're not clipping anatomy.
- 4:19You're not missing anatomy. You need to understand all
- 4:22those. Don't worry about how fast
- 4:24you're scanning. That's not the point here.
- 4:26You have to be efficient. OK, so that is one of the things
- 4:30that I really, really just take the time to explain because
- 4:34they're trying to match the speed of a senior tech when
- 4:37you're not even there and you're brand new.
- 4:39OK. And then I think the other
- 4:41problem is, is they want to avoid looking like they're
- 4:44slower than the other techs around them.
- 4:47It's OK if you're a little slower.
- 4:49Some people don't catch on as quick.
- 4:52OK, I'll tell you, when I was a beginner, I was slow.
- 4:55OK. Now, yes, I have a faster pace
- 4:58on how I do things now because I out of practice repetition and
- 5:03experience. Yeah.
- 5:05Like I can knockout a head CT in probably less than 30 seconds.
- 5:09Sure. Of course, if my patient is
- 5:11ambulatory, they walk, they lay down on the table, they follow
- 5:14instructions and all that stuff. Yeah, it'll take me less than a
- 5:17minute, sure, but sometimes texts don't catch on that quick
- 5:21and we need to give them more time.
- 5:23OK. And I think a lot of it is, is
- 5:25to increase your speed is because you want to impress
- 5:29other people and say, yes, I'm good, I'm a good tech.
- 5:32That's not necessarily the case. And you have to be careful with
- 5:36that. OK, So the result of that is, is
- 5:39that you get very sloppy, very lazy positioning because you're
- 5:44trying to rush through the process because you want to look
- 5:46like you're a superstar, OK? You have to earn superstar
- 5:50respect and status. And it's not by, you know,
- 5:54rushing through it. So then your positioning gets
- 5:57lazy, it gets sloppy and you know your doses are through the
- 6:01roof, OK. Other thing is, is you're
- 6:04missing important anatomy, you're clipping anatomy and
- 6:08you're not centering properly. That comes with being rushed and
- 6:11trying to impress everybody else or you're being brushed because
- 6:15you're not being trained properly either.
- 6:17And then what that does is it increases your stress level,
- 6:20increases that internal pressure to perform, OK.
- 6:23So it's a domino effect. And then what happened is, is
- 6:28that you get shitty ass training and then you're not as equipped
- 6:32to perform like you want to, or you're not as competent and as
- 6:40knowledgeable as some of the other texts because you weren't
- 6:44taking the time to learn and taking the time to actually find
- 6:48out the why behind things. OK, So what we need to start
- 6:51doing is we need to start redefining what efficiency is.
- 6:55So we need to master, you know, being clear and clarifying
- 7:00things before we hit being faster at something.
- 7:03OK, So what you need to do is you need to be efficient.
- 7:07You need to practice, you need to have repetition, you need to
- 7:13adopt, OK, this is what I do here, this is what I do there
- 7:17and understand the whys behind the exams.
- 7:20You have to understand why you're doing these exams and you
- 7:24have to make sure that you execute them correctly so you
- 7:27get optimal exams. So we want to start with
- 7:29precision first, OK? And we want to repeat that
- 7:34workflow on making sure that training has a structure, has a
- 7:38foundation, and that we're leading by good examples, not
- 7:43shitty ass training good examples.
- 7:45OK, Speed can come third or last because speed will come with
- 7:51your experience. The more you you know, the more
- 7:54you gain experience. That's where your speed will
- 7:56come. OK, So what is the result of
- 7:59that? You get optimal scans, OK?
- 8:01You don't got radiologist calling you bitching and
- 8:03complaining. You get fewer corrections, OK,
- 8:07You look like a professional. You are respected and you are
- 8:12very calm when you know the situation has a lot of, you
- 8:17know, chaos, you're under a lot of pressure, things like that.
- 8:20You're very calm under that performance.
- 8:22So that is what we need to do because we need to make sure
- 8:27that you're efficient in scanning.
- 8:28So when it comes to CT training, there has to be a structure and
- 8:31a foundation so that you can be efficient and you can be
- 8:34successful. If you want to go ahead and walk
- 8:38through step by step on making sure that you know the core
- 8:41basics, the CT Protocol Guide bundle is there to help you.
- 8:45So make sure you check out the show notes for that.
- 8:47So this episode was a little short because I wanted to get
- 8:50just to the nitty gritty of everything.
- 8:52But one thing that I have to say is when we're training those new
- 8:56texts, because we're getting a lot of them that are cross
- 8:58training from CT, there's a lot of them on social media that
- 9:01keep asking, is CTA good choice? I get a lot of comments every
- 9:05single day about should I cross prospering into CT?
- 9:08Is this a good decision? We need to make sure that we set
- 9:11them up correctly and set them up for success, not to be button
- 9:15pushers, OK. And I know that triggers some of
- 9:17you and that's OK because that's not the, you know, generation of
- 9:22texts that we want. We want to make sure that we
- 9:25create generation of texts that are there to make an impact,
- 9:29help patients and making sure that they're successful as well.
- 9:33OK, Thank you so much for listening and subscribing,
- 9:37driving to the podcast. Thank you for listening to this
- 9:39episode. I will chat with you guys in the
- 9:41next episode.
