- 0:00Chapter 37 from the book of Jeremiah.
- 0:03Dear God, please be with us as we read through the scripture.
- 0:07Let the Holy Spirit open our eyes and ears.
- 0:10We ask this in Jesus name, Amen. This is talking about Jeremiah
- 0:16in prison. Now Zedekiah who was the king?
- 0:18So Zedekiah son of Josiah was made king of Judah by
- 0:23Nebuchadnezzar, king of Babylon. He reigned in place of Jehoah
- 0:28Chin, son of Jehoah Kim. Neither he nor his attendants
- 0:34nor the people of the land paid any attention to the words the
- 0:39Lord had spoken through Jeremiah the prophet.
- 0:42King Zedekiah, however, sent Jehukau, son of Shimalaya with
- 0:50the priest Zephaniah son of Messiah, to Jeremiah the prophet
- 0:55with this message. Please pray to the Lord our God
- 1:00for us. So that's interesting that all
- 1:06of this King Zedekiah sent a message asking Jeremiah to pray
- 1:11to the Lord for them. He didn't feel like he could
- 1:16talk to God, which was interesting.
- 1:18So going back to Scripture now, Jeremiah was free to come and go
- 1:22among the people, for he had not yet been put in prison.
- 1:26Pharaoh's army had marched out of Egypt, and when the
- 1:29Babylonians who were besieging Jerusalem heard about, heard the
- 1:32report about them, they withdrew from Jerusalem.
- 1:36Then the word of the Lord came to Jeremiah the prophet.
- 1:39This is what the Lord the God of Israel says.
- 1:42Tell the king of Judah, who sent you to inquire of me.
- 1:45Pharaoh's army, which has marched out to support you, will
- 1:50go back to his own land, to Egypt.
- 1:54Then the Babylonians will return and attack the city.
- 1:57They will capture it and burn it down.
- 2:01This is what the Lord says. Do not deceive yourselves
- 2:05thinking the Babylonians will surely leave us.
- 2:09They will not, even if you were to defeat the entire Babylonian
- 2:13army that is attacking you and only wounded men were left in
- 2:18their tents, they would come out and burn the city down.
- 2:23This just shows us how when God says something, He means it.
- 2:28And even if you know, no matter what people are thinking, if God
- 2:31has proclaimed it through a prophet, and Jeremiah was one of
- 2:35those people that he spoke through, it was going to come to
- 2:38pass. And it was warning upon warning,
- 2:41but people kept ignoring them and God keeps sending the
- 2:44message back through Jeremiah to these people.
- 2:46It had to be exhausting for Jeremiah.
- 2:49Verse 11, After the Babylonian army had withdrawn from
- 2:53Jerusalem because of Pharaoh's army, Jeremiah started to leave
- 2:57the city to go to the territory of Benjamin to get his share of
- 3:01the property among the people there.
- 3:04But when he reached the Benjamin gate, the captain of the guard,
- 3:07whose name was Irijah, son of Shilamiah, the son of Hananiah,
- 3:14arrested him and said you are deserting to the Babylonians.
- 3:20That's not true. Jeremiah said I'm not deserting
- 3:22to the Babylonians. But Irijah would not listen to
- 3:25him. Instead he arrested Jeremiah and
- 3:28brought him to the officials. They were angry with Jeremiah
- 3:34and had him beaten and imprisoned in the House of
- 3:38Jonathan, the secretary, which they had made into a prison.
- 3:43I thought that was kind of interesting too.
- 3:44Back in in that time they made houses, prisons and we actually
- 3:52saw a little bit of evidence of this during 2023, I guess
- 3:59because many of the hostages were taken into homes in Gaza
- 4:04that were used as prisons. So it we can even see like a
- 4:08modern day happening of things that are written in the Bible.
- 4:14So verse 16, Jeremiah was put into a vaulted cell in a dungeon
- 4:20where he remained a long time. Then King Zedekiah sent for him
- 4:24and had him brought to the palace where he asked him
- 4:27privately is there any word from the Lord?
- 4:32Yes, Jeremiah replied, you will be delivered into the hands of
- 4:35the king of Babylon. Then Jeremiah said to King
- 4:38Zedekiah, what crime have I committed against you or your
- 4:43attendants or this people that you have put me in prison?
- 4:46Where are your prophets who prophesized to you?
- 4:49The king of Babylon will not attack you or this land?
- 4:52But now, my Lord the king, please listen.
- 4:56Let me bring my petition before you.
- 4:58Do not send me back to the House of Jonathan the secretary, or I
- 5:01will die there. King Zedekiah then gave orders
- 5:05for Jeremiah to be placed in the courtyard of the guard and given
- 5:09a loaf of bread from the street of the Bakers each day until all
- 5:14the bread in the city was gone. So Jeremiah remained in the
- 5:18courtyard of the guard. And that's the end of chapter
- 5:2337. I'll read the questions and
- 5:25answers, and then we'll go into chapter 38.
- 5:29So it says. Why would a wicked king want
- 5:31prayer? He may have considered prayer
- 5:34his last resort. As he saw trouble drawing
- 5:37nearer. King Zedekiah probably panicked.
- 5:40He may have felt it would be better to have Jeremiah, whom he
- 5:43didn't like, praying for him than to have no one praying at
- 5:47all. Zedekiah apparently became more
- 5:50receptive to spiritual matters in the face of looming
- 5:53judgement. It's a lot like us.
- 5:55Sometimes when it's it gets the worst in our life is when we
- 6:00actually turn to God. So why did Jeremiah want
- 6:03prosperity in the territory or want property not prosperity?
- 6:07Why did Jeremiah want property in the territory of Benjamin?
- 6:11Jeremiah's hometown of Anathoth was located in the territory of
- 6:15Benjamin. Israelites considered it
- 6:18sacrilegious to let a title for land slip into the hands of a of
- 6:22non family members. If someone was forced to sell
- 6:25their land, relatives were given the first option.
- 6:29Jeremiah may have felt obligated to island from a financially
- 6:33strapped family member. More likely, though, Jeremiah
- 6:37hoped to offer tangible proof that he believed Judah would one
- 6:40day be restored to the land. Though not certain, this
- 6:44incident may be linked to the events in Chapter 32.
- 6:50What was a vaulted cell? After being held temporarily in
- 6:55a house that had had been made into a prison, Jeremiah was put
- 7:00in a dungeon, literally House of the cistern.
- 7:04It may have been a large underground room that overlooked
- 7:08that looked similar to a cistern, but had been prepared
- 7:12especially to house prisoners. It had no windows, they were too
- 7:16high, they were too high off the floor to be reached.
- 7:23Jeremiah was later imprisoned in a literal cistern which was made
- 7:28to hold water, not prisoners. Why was Jeremiah placed in the
- 7:33courtyard of the guard? Shortly before Jerusalem's fall
- 7:37in 586 BC? The city was in severe
- 7:40difficulty because of the siege imposed by the Babylonians.
- 7:44Everyone was restricted because of the dangerous circumstances.
- 7:48Jeremiah was apparently kept under a type of house arrest
- 7:51confined to an area policed by the guard.
- 7:54In times of war, this kind of detainment was commonly used by
- 7:58military powers. Now we'll go into chapter 38.
- 8:03Jeremiah thrown into a cistern. Chef Ataya son of Matan.
- 8:10Gadalia son of Pashur, Jehukalao Kao son of Shilamiya and Pasher
- 8:19son of Malachiaja heard that what Jeremiah was telling all
- 8:24the people when he said this is what the Lord says.
- 8:28Whoever stays in the city will die by the sword, famine or
- 8:33plague, but whoever goes over to the Babylonians will live.
- 8:39They will escape with their lives.
- 8:41They will live, and this is what the Lord says.
- 8:44This city will certainly be given into the hands of the army
- 8:47of the king of Babylon, who will capture it.
- 8:50Then the official said to the king, This man should be put to
- 8:53death. He is discouraging the soldiers
- 8:56who are left in the city, as well as all the people, by the
- 8:58things he's saying to them. This man is not seeking the good
- 9:02of these people, but their rune. He is in your hands, King
- 9:06Zedekiah answered. The king can do nothing to
- 9:09oppose you. So they took Jeremiah and put
- 9:12him into the cistern of Malkaja, the King's son, which was in the
- 9:17courtyard of the guard. They lowered Jeremiah by ropes
- 9:21into the cistern. It had no water in it, only mud,
- 9:25and Jeremiah sank down in the mud.
- 9:28But Ibid Milek, a Cushite unofficial in the royal palace,
- 9:32heard that they had put Jeremiah into the cistern while the king
- 9:36was sitting in the Benjamin Gate.
- 9:38Ibid Milek went out of the palace and said to him, My Lord
- 9:43the king, these men have acted wickedly in all they have done
- 9:46to Jeremiah the prophet. They have thrown him into a
- 9:48cistern where he will starve to death when there is no longer
- 9:52any bread in the city. Then the king commanded Ebid
- 9:54Melik the Kushite. Take 30 men from here with you
- 9:58and lift Jeremiah the prophet out of the cistern before he
- 10:01dies. So right there God is rescuing
- 10:04Jeremiah. So Ebid Melik took the man with
- 10:08him and went to a room under the treasure under the treasury in
- 10:12the palace. He took some old rags and worn
- 10:16out clothes from there and let them down with ropes to Jeremiah
- 10:19in the cistern. Ebid Milek the Kushite said to
- 10:23Jeremiah, Put these old rags and worn out clothes under your arms
- 10:28to pad the ropes. Jeremiah did so, and they pulled
- 10:31him up with the ropes, and List lifted him out of the cistern,
- 10:36and Jeremiah remained in the courtyard of the guard.
- 10:40Then King Zedekiah sent for Jeremiah the prophet and had him
- 10:44brought to the third entrance to the temple of the Lord.
- 10:48I am going to ask you something, the king said to Jeremiah.
- 10:53Do not hide anything from me. Jeremiah said to Zedekiah.
- 10:58If I give you an answer, will you not kill me?
- 11:03Even if I did give you counsel, you would not listen to me.
- 11:07But King Zedekiah swore this oath secretly to Jeremiah.
- 11:13As surely as the Lord lives who has given us breath, I will
- 11:17neither kill you nor hand you over to those who want to kill
- 11:22you. Then Jeremiah said to Zedekiah,
- 11:25This is what the Lord God Almighty, the God of Israel,
- 11:28says. If you surrender to the officers
- 11:31of the king of Babylon, your life will be spared, and this
- 11:34city will not be burned down. You and your family will live,
- 11:39but if you will not surrender to the officers of the king of the
- 11:44of Babylon, this city will be given into the hands of the
- 11:47Babylonians, and they will burn it down.
- 11:50You yourself will not escape from them.
- 11:54King Zedekiah said to Jeremiah, I am afraid of the Jews who have
- 11:58gone over to the Babylonians, for the Babylonians may hand me
- 12:02over to them, and they will mistreat me.
- 12:05They will not hand you over. Jeremiah replied, Obey the Lord
- 12:10by doing what I tell you. Then it will go well with you,
- 12:14and your life will be spared. But if you refuse to surrender,
- 12:20this is what the Lord has revealed to me.
- 12:23All the women left in the palace of the king of Judah will be
- 12:26brought out to the officials of the king of Babylon.
- 12:29Those women will say to you, They misled you and overcame
- 12:33you. Those trusted friends of yours,
- 12:36your feet are sunk in the mud. Your friends have deserted you.
- 12:41All your wives and children will be brought out to the
- 12:43Babylonians. You yourself will not escape
- 12:46from their hands, but will be captured by the king of Babylon,
- 12:49and this city will be burned down.
- 12:53Then Zedekiah said to Jeremiah, Do not let anyone know about
- 12:57this conversation, or you may die.
- 12:59If the officials hear that I talked with you and they come to
- 13:03you and say, tell us what you said to the king and what the
- 13:06king said to you, do not hide it from us or we will kill you.
- 13:10Then tell them I was pleading with the king not to send me
- 13:15back to Jonathan's house to die there.
- 13:17All the officials did come to Jeremiah and questioned him, and
- 13:22he told them everything the king had ordered him to say, so they
- 13:29said no more to him, for no one had heard his conversation with
- 13:32the king. And Jeremiah remained in the
- 13:35courtyard of the guard until the day Jerusalem was captured.
- 13:40So I'll read the questions and answers for chapter 38.
- 13:43Also, how could Jeremiah preach while confined?
- 13:49Jeremiah was probably free to wander throughout the courtyard.
- 13:52Many others may have been in the courtyard.
- 13:54Some, like Jeremiah, may have been there under detention.
- 13:59Others would have been free to come and go as they please.
- 14:02Jeremiah probably spoke to anyone who would listen to him,
- 14:05although not as a pulpit preacher.
- 14:07He simply told people what God was telling him, perhaps talking
- 14:11to one person at a time. Why sound like a traitor?
- 14:15Jeremiah saw correctly that God was using the Babylonians to
- 14:19punish Judah for her spiritual rebellion.
- 14:22If that was true, then simple logic said that anyone who
- 14:26resisted the Babylonians was in reality fighting against God.
- 14:30Jeremiah had to speak the truth regardless of the outcome.
- 14:33Unfortunately, the king and his supporters, who were more
- 14:36concerned about morale than truth, wouldn't listen.
- 14:42Why surrender to a wicked nation?
- 14:45Jeremiah saw the nation crisis. In simple terms, surrendered to
- 14:49the Babylonians meant surrender to God and his method of
- 14:54purifying the nation. Perplexing though it was, He
- 14:58knew the choice was painful, but he also knew it was the best
- 15:01option they had. To resist cruel and wicked
- 15:05Babylon was to resist the holy God of Israel.
- 15:09Jeremiah saw Nebuchadnezzar merely as God's tool to bring
- 15:13about Israel's redemption. Who is in charge here?
- 15:18Zedekiah may have been at least partially receptive to
- 15:23Jeremiah's message. He had asked for Jeremiah's
- 15:25prayers and has secretly consulted him.
- 15:29But even though Zedekiah was king, his power depended on the
- 15:32support of his close associates. Without them, he had no
- 15:36political future. So he may have felt compelled to
- 15:40maintain the party line. Another view is that Zedekiah
- 15:44was frustrated with Jeremiah and was simply saying he didn't
- 15:48think it really it really mattered what they might do, for
- 15:52no one, not even the king, could get Jeremiah to change.
- 15:58Why use a cistern as a prison? Cisterns, pear shaped caverns
- 16:04with small openings that could be covered, were built in this
- 16:07region to catch the winter rain waters in the general in
- 16:11preparation for the dry summers. They were dug out of limestone
- 16:15rock or were earthen with plastered walls.
- 16:20There were large ones for public use and small ones in houses.
- 16:24Cisterns were sometimes used as prisons because they were nearly
- 16:28impossible to escape from. Putting Jeremiah in a cistern
- 16:32probably means they intended to leave him there to die.
- 16:37Why was a foreigner an official in Judah?
- 16:41It was apparently a common practice to recruit foreign
- 16:44advisers, perhaps because they reduced the likelihood of a
- 16:48palace coup from the King's relatives.
- 16:50The Hebrew word translated official can also mean eunuch.
- 16:55Eunuchs often served in the palace because castrated males
- 16:59with no family ambitions were less inclined to initiate
- 17:03political insurrection. Later, the Hebrew word for
- 17:07eunuch became less specific, taking on the meaning of a court
- 17:12official. Why was a foreigner so concerned
- 17:16about Jeremiah? Many who were not themselves
- 17:21descendants of Jacob feared the God of Israel, for example, Ruth
- 17:25the Moabite and Jehonadab the Rekabite.
- 17:29The God of Israel was not Israel's exclusive property.
- 17:33Ibid. Melek worshipped the Lord and
- 17:36respected Jeremiah as a prophet of the Lord, unlike others who
- 17:40were afraid to speak up in the face of adversity.
- 17:43Ebidmelik's concern for justice prompted him to talk to the king
- 17:48on behalf on Jeremiah's behalf. Why did it take 30 men to lift
- 17:54out one man? We don't really know something.
- 17:57A scribe may have added the sign for 10s by by mistake changing
- 18:04the number from 3 to 30. Although some translations say
- 18:09three, there is no textual evidence to support this.
- 18:14Another explanation may be that Jeremiah had sunk deep into the
- 18:18muck on the bottom of the cistern and was weighted down
- 18:21with mud. Therefore, it required more
- 18:23effort to remove Jeremiah than one would expect.
- 18:26More likely, however, the large number of men was to ensure that
- 18:29their efforts would not be thwarted by Jeremiah's
- 18:32opponents. Why had some Jews joined the
- 18:36Babylonians? It is likely that many Jews
- 18:39surrendered to the Babylonians either because of Jeremiah's
- 18:42message or because it was the sensible thing to do.
- 18:45Surrendering offered the hope of eventually being freed.
- 18:48Resisting Babylon was hopeless. As it turned out, the
- 18:50descendants of some who later surrendered did return to Judah.
- 18:55The king feared that those who had surrendered might try to
- 18:58take out their anger on him. His policy of holding out
- 19:02against the Babylonians had caused great suffering and
- 19:06destruction. Was Jeremiah involved in a cover
- 19:10up? It's likely that Jeremiah
- 19:13answered truthfully without divulging everything.
- 19:15He had no obligation to tell everything he discussed with the
- 19:19king, so he told only enough to answer their questions.
- 19:25And that's the end of chapter 38.
- 19:28So we will end here and next time pick up chapter 39.
