- 0:00Speaker 1: We're back on the Yukon Men's Basketball Coaches Show. The
- 0:02Speaker 1: Huskies nineteenth ranked in the country after their win at
- 0:06Speaker 1: Marquette on the road in Milwaukee in front of the
- 0:09Speaker 1: biggest crowd Ha's ever watched Marquette basketball game. What an atmosphere.
- 0:14Speaker 1: As Luke Murray joins us, again, You've been in a
- 0:17Speaker 1: lot of big places, right, You've been in Houston, You've
- 0:20Speaker 1: been in Phoenix sixty thousand plus, playing for national championships,
- 0:24Speaker 1: that's the ultimate. But I think for you know, a
- 0:27Speaker 1: regular season Big East game, that was one of the
- 0:30Speaker 1: biggest environments that you kind has faced here in the
- 0:32Speaker 1: last three years.
- 0:35Speaker 2: Yeah, I mean that was a great environment to play in.
- 0:37Speaker 2: You know, I remember playing at National Marquet Day once
- 0:40Speaker 2: before when I was at Xavier and we got drilled.
- 0:42Speaker 2: You know, it just felt like they couldn't miss a shot.
- 0:45Speaker 2: And so, you know, I think going into the game,
- 0:47Speaker 2: we have a great respect level for their program and
- 0:50Speaker 2: for their fan base, you know, and we tried to
- 0:52Speaker 2: prepare our guys as best we could, you know, for
- 0:54Speaker 2: the environment and the enthusiasm of the crowd and of
- 0:58Speaker 2: the team, and I thought our guys fonded in a
- 1:00Speaker 2: huge huge way. You know, Jalen got us off to
- 1:02Speaker 2: a great start, and you know, guys were able to
- 1:05Speaker 2: kind of build off of that. But yeah, I mean
- 1:07Speaker 2: tremendous respect for Marquette, you know, and Marquette and Creighton,
- 1:11Speaker 2: Providence Xavier some great home court environments when we go
- 1:14Speaker 2: out there on the road.
- 1:15Speaker 3: So it's been great to go out there the last
- 1:17Speaker 3: couple of years and get.
- 1:18Speaker 1: A w How much do you think did Cam Spencer
- 1:23Speaker 1: and Andre Jackson being on the site, being at the
- 1:26Speaker 1: ballgame affect things. I ran into Spencer in the locker
- 1:30Speaker 1: room before the game, and he had a big smile.
- 1:33Speaker 1: He really was happy to be around the team. I
- 1:37Speaker 1: think it looked like anyway that there was an impact
- 1:40Speaker 1: there that those guys made.
- 1:42Speaker 3: I really think it did. You know.
- 1:44Speaker 2: I said to each of them after the game that
- 1:46Speaker 2: I don't think we would have won without them being there.
- 1:49Speaker 2: You know, for me personally, those two Cam and Andre
- 1:53Speaker 2: are as special to me as any players I've ever coached,
- 1:56Speaker 2: and they're the there's no better competitor, uh than Andre
- 2:01Speaker 2: Jackson and camp Spence, Camp Spencer, So you know, to
- 2:04Speaker 2: have them there I think made it made a great
- 2:06Speaker 2: deal to our to our coaches to our players, and
- 2:09Speaker 2: you know when you need to when you need to
- 2:12Speaker 2: really display some fortitude and some toughness and win a
- 2:16Speaker 2: big game on the road. Uh, you know, those are
- 2:19Speaker 2: the kind of guys that you want in your corner.
- 2:21Speaker 3: Now.
- 2:21Speaker 1: You had the scouting portion for Marquette and I went
- 2:26Speaker 1: to the shooter on. I watched, I listened to what
- 2:28Speaker 1: you were telling guys, And one thing you can't do, though,
- 2:32Speaker 1: in those sessions is generate the urgency, the energy, the
- 2:38Speaker 1: level of intensity that you need to come out and
- 2:40Speaker 1: play with when you're on the road. And I thought
- 2:44Speaker 1: the Huskies maybe were as high level as far as
- 2:48Speaker 1: their intensity and their urgency, especially on the defensive end,
- 2:53Speaker 1: to start that game against Marquette. How did you view that? Yeah?
- 2:57Speaker 2: I agree, I agree, And you know, we talked about
- 3:00Speaker 2: it a lot in the days leading up to Marquette,
- 3:02Speaker 2: you know, as I mentioned, I mean, we have a
- 3:04Speaker 2: tremendous respect level for their team, their program, their coaches,
- 3:08Speaker 2: and so we knew we had our hands full, you know,
- 3:10Speaker 2: going out there, and that it was gonna, you know,
- 3:13Speaker 2: require us to be at our best. You know, honestly, Mike,
- 3:15Speaker 2: like I didn't love our shoot around. I didn't think
- 3:17Speaker 2: we had a great vibe in the shoot around. You know,
- 3:20Speaker 2: I texted the guys on the team. I reminded him,
- 3:22Speaker 2: you know, I did, John Wooden. Competitive greatness is being
- 3:26Speaker 2: at your best when your best is required, you know,
- 3:28Speaker 2: And I said, like tonight, it's required. And I thought
- 3:31Speaker 2: the guys really responded, you know, on the on the
- 3:35Speaker 2: floor when the ball went up. And it was great
- 3:38Speaker 2: to see because again, you know, I know Coach Hurley's
- 3:40Speaker 2: talked about it a good deal. You know, we we
- 3:43Speaker 2: really haven't shown that to the degree that we need
- 3:46Speaker 2: to at some times this year, and it was great
- 3:49Speaker 2: to see our guys, you know, put forth that.
- 3:51Speaker 3: Kind of effort. You know, you mentioned defensively, it's been
- 3:54Speaker 3: a struggle for us most of the year.
- 3:56Speaker 2: You know. We had a little bit of a different
- 3:57Speaker 2: game plan in terms of the way that we wanted
- 3:59Speaker 2: to guard to Marquette, and I thought buying large, I
- 4:02Speaker 2: guys did a really.
- 4:03Speaker 3: Nice child with it.
- 4:04Speaker 1: And I understand the couple practices before you left campus.
- 4:08Speaker 1: We're not a level either, so you had to be
- 4:12Speaker 1: worried a little bit coming into that ball game because
- 4:14Speaker 1: here's Marquette. They're sitting you know, a half game out
- 4:16Speaker 1: of first place. They're on a roll, They've won a
- 4:19Speaker 1: bunch of games. They can't wait to play you guys,
- 4:22Speaker 1: because you have had their number a little bit. How
- 4:26Speaker 1: do you explain it? I mean, I've been doing this
- 4:28Speaker 1: for forty years and I can't explain anything. But that's
- 4:31Speaker 1: why you're here to try to explain to me how
- 4:34Speaker 1: that all happened, because I didn't see it coming. But Wow,
- 4:37Speaker 1: what a performance.
- 4:39Speaker 2: Yeah, I mean, I think it speaks to what we're
- 4:40Speaker 2: capable of, you know, and we really haven't. You know,
- 4:44Speaker 2: we've had some great wins. I mean, you think back
- 4:46Speaker 2: to our our win at the Garden against Gonzaga. You know,
- 4:49Speaker 2: Alex did not play well that game. The win that
- 4:52Speaker 2: we had against Baylor, Alex didn't play in it. You know,
- 4:55Speaker 2: a lot of these games recently that we've been playing
- 4:57Speaker 2: without Liam, you know, so we have it necessarily been
- 5:01Speaker 2: at full strength. And I still think we've we've shown
- 5:03Speaker 2: some impressive things. It's just a matter of trying to
- 5:05Speaker 2: piece it all together on the same night. And so,
- 5:08Speaker 2: you know, I don't necessarily know you know, what it was,
- 5:11Speaker 2: but I think our guys understood the significance of the game,
- 5:15Speaker 2: you know, and the urgency that was required to be
- 5:18Speaker 2: at our best.
- 5:18Speaker 3: And you know, it shows what I know.
- 5:20Speaker 2: I mean, I talked to the guys at length about,
- 5:23Speaker 2: you know, winning the turnover battle, and that that was
- 5:25Speaker 2: going to be the most important thing, not not to
- 5:27Speaker 2: win it necessarily, but to try to keep it close.
- 5:29Speaker 2: Because Marquette is top ten in the country in fewest
- 5:32Speaker 2: turnovers and top twenty in the country in forcing turnovers.
- 5:35Speaker 2: So I said, like, hey, listen, we're not a team
- 5:37Speaker 2: that forces a whole lot of turnovers. We've got to
- 5:39Speaker 2: try to force a couple more than usual. But we
- 5:41Speaker 2: got to take care of this ball. And we turned
- 5:44Speaker 2: it over twenty five times, and we gave up seventeen
- 5:47Speaker 2: offensive rebounds. But luckily, you know, I think they only
- 5:50Speaker 2: had eight second chance points, so as much as they
- 5:52Speaker 2: were getting the offensive rebounds, they weren't really converting on them.
- 5:55Speaker 3: And you know, our guys stepped up and made some
- 5:58Speaker 3: big shots.
- 6:00Speaker 1: You know, you're talking about turnovers because obviously that was
- 6:03Speaker 1: a significant stat and one you don't want to have
- 6:06Speaker 1: to look at. But I felt like, as I'm calling
- 6:09Speaker 1: the game, some of it was inexperienced by our guys.
- 6:12Speaker 1: I mean the sophomores, the guys that haven't really handled
- 6:15Speaker 1: road pressure all that often. Hassandi are as, you know,
- 6:19Speaker 1: a point guard this year really for the first time
- 6:21Speaker 1: full time. A lot of stuff I think goes into
- 6:24Speaker 1: those numbers. And I felt like the Huskies literally threw
- 6:28Speaker 1: the ball away ten times in the game where they
- 6:32Speaker 1: really weren't forced into things, and that was disturbing. But
- 6:36Speaker 1: as you say, you overcame it, and I think in
- 6:39Speaker 1: totality on the bottom line, that might be one of
- 6:41Speaker 1: the significant developments of what happened the other night in Milwaukee.
- 6:46Speaker 3: Yeah, I mean, I think a couple different factors. You know. Obviously,
- 6:49Speaker 3: you know, Hassan has been really.
- 6:51Speaker 2: Hobbled and limited in terms of what he's been able
- 6:54Speaker 2: to do in game in.
- 6:56Speaker 3: Practice, and honestly, I think Marquette was even a step forward.
- 7:00Speaker 3: Paul he was really struggling. Xavier, he was really struggling.
- 7:03Speaker 2: So you know, we tried to take some of the
- 7:06Speaker 2: minutes away from him and kind of lessen his burden.
- 7:10Speaker 2: You know, Aiden got off to a rough start out there,
- 7:13Speaker 2: and so we had Jalen Stewart and Alex and solo
- 7:16Speaker 2: guys that are not naturally in those positions a whole lot,
- 7:20Speaker 2: you know, taking on greater ball handling responsibilities. But like
- 7:22Speaker 2: you mentioned, I mean I think there were two or
- 7:25Speaker 2: three that we just didn't handle well. You know, passes
- 7:28Speaker 2: that were dropped, we had two illegal screens, we had
- 7:31Speaker 2: a shot clock violation, we stepped out of bounds, you know,
- 7:33Speaker 2: So they were probably ten or so that were unforced.
- 7:36Speaker 2: And then Marquette does a great job of forcing turnovers.
- 7:39Speaker 2: I mean, that's what they're really good at. And Stevie
- 7:41Speaker 2: Mitchell and Chase Ross are really good individual defenders. So
- 7:45Speaker 2: you know, hopefully with the return of Liam with Hassan,
- 7:48Speaker 2: you know, looking to feel a little bit better here
- 7:49Speaker 2: in the in the days to come, you know, we'll
- 7:52Speaker 2: be better against Saint John's because obviously they do a
- 7:54Speaker 2: great job of defending as well.
- 7:56Speaker 1: Yeah, Saint John's at home Creton next week on the road.
- 7:59Speaker 1: That's a big one too. We're going to back to
- 8:01Speaker 1: ramp up the show with Luke Murray as we continue.
- 8:04Speaker 1: This is the Yukon Men's Basketball Coaches Show on Learfield
