- 0:07The Dallas Cowboys face the Miami Dolphins at the Orange Bowl in Miami during week 10 of the 1978 NFL season.
- 0:15The game takes place on November 5th and both teams entered the game with a 6-3 record.
- 0:20This is the local Dallas radio broadcast featuring announcers Vern Lundquist and Brad Sham.
- 0:26Dolphins have won the toss and will receive so we'll get a very early look at what their offensive line will indeed be.
- 0:34But as you've been hearing all week, if you're a Cowboy fan and reading all week, if you've been reading the Dallas Metroplex newspapers,
- 0:43the time as Vern said for talking has come to a conclusion for the Cowboys, but also the back to the basics approach is what we've heard so much about.
- 0:53And we'll talk about that during the game, but much was made of the fact that the Cowboy coaches apparently took a good hard look last weekend
- 1:00when they had some extra time at the offensive game plans especially and decided to simplify things just a shade.
- 1:06We'll see. Rafael stepped in getting ready to tee it up.
- 1:09Duriel Harris is back to receive the kickoff for the Miami Dolphins.
- 1:13Doomsday figures to get onto the field first this afternoon.
- 1:17Can't say that for sure anymore the way things have gone lately, but we'll find out.
- 1:21At any rate, as the Cowboys get ready to kick it off and the Dolphins get ready to put it in play first with the play-by-play for this afternoon's game between the Dallas Cowboys and the Miami Dolphins.
- 1:30Here's Vern Lundquist.
- 1:31Thank you, Brad. We want to welcome members of the Armed Forces around the world who have joined us today on the Armed Forces Radio Network.
- 1:37Good to have all of you listening. We trust we will have a good ballgame today.
- 1:41Rafael Seption will kick off. We've got Duriel Harris, Jimmy Cefalo, and Gary Davis-D for the white-clad Miami Dolphins.
- 1:47The Cowboys are in blue this afternoon, but they have pretty well destroyed the thought about that being a jinx.
- 1:52Here's Septian's approach. Barely low kick will be taken by Harris one yard back.
- 1:57He's out to the five, center of the field at the ten, the 15, the 20. Now it cuts to his left and watch him run.
- 2:03Septian chases him, makes first contact, and Dennis Thurman knocks him out about at the 27-yard line.
- 2:08Septian saves a punch with his first contact.
- 2:12Our officiating crew today, Gordon McCarter is the referee, the umpire Tony Kramer, the headlinesman Jerry Seaman.
- 2:18I'm going to save the line judge for last. The back judge, Ray Douglas, the side judge, Bill Quindley, the field judge, Armand Terzian,
- 2:25and Dallas fans will remember the line judge from the Orange Bowl here in Miami, Super Bowl V, Jack Fetty,
- 2:32who made the infamous fumble call on Dwayne Thomas down near the three when Dave Manders came up with the ball.
- 2:38It's first down, ten Miami at the 27. Bob Greasy under Jim Langer, the center.
- 2:43Regular set in the offensive backfield, and Greasy will throw on first down.
- 2:47Four-man rush, he's got all day. Goes deep left side, it's caught.
- 2:50First down by Dario Harris at the 43-yard line.
- 2:54Greasy could have taken a nap in the offensive backfield.
- 2:59So he goes to the air on the first down, ten play, and picks up 14, 15 yards.
- 3:03Bob Kuchenberg at left tackle, Ed Newman at left guard.
- 3:06Jim Langer, the center, Larry Little at right guard, Mike Curran at right tackle,
- 3:10and Andre Tillman from Dallas Lake Highlands High School at the tight end.
- 3:14That's more, and Dario Harris, the wide receivers.
- 3:16Norm Bullock and Delvin Williams, along with Bob Greasy in the offensive backfield.
- 3:20First down, ten at the 44. Langer over the ball, up and down, step the handoff, right side.
- 3:25Delvin Williams cuts up field, hits and drops at the 47-yard line by Randy White.
- 3:30Picked up about three. Defensively for the Cowboys, Ed Jones, Jeff Ropew, Randy White, and Harvey Martin.
- 3:37The linebackers are Thomas Henderson, Bob Rooney, Gadeedee Lewis, Aaron Kyle, and Mark Washington on the corners,
- 3:42and Cliff Harris and Charlie Waters in the secondary.
- 3:46We may as well tell you early about us, and we'll do it after this play, about a statistic that we uncovered
- 3:51without just a heck of a lot of work about Delvin Williams.
- 3:54Second down, seven. Dolphins at their own 47-yard line.
- 3:57Early moments of the game, Tillman goes lined up tight to the left side.
- 4:00Waters follows him over there, and here's Greasy to throw. No blitz by the Cowboys.
- 4:05Greasy comes in the right flat, caught by Delvin Williams.
- 4:07Shakes the tackle at the 50. To the 40, to the 30.
- 4:10Now being chased by Waters at the 20 and caught from behind at the 11-yard line.
- 4:16Bruenig had him wrapped up at the 50-yard line. He shook the tackle, and it's a first down, ten Miami at the 11.
- 4:23Of course, that's the kind of running, even though that was a pass reception, the kind of running that has made Delvin Williams
- 4:28the number one ball carrier in the league coming into this game.
- 4:32And as we can see on what passes for our Magnavox monitor today, Bruenig was there and had him, and Henderson was in the area.
- 4:39And Williams, who of course came in the trade with San Francisco, got away, and a defensive mistake
- 4:44has left the Dolphins in great position now at the Cowboys, 16.
- 4:49Moore and Harris both go wide at the left side. Big split, Tillman is tight right, Greasy is two for two.
- 4:55Looks into the eyes of Bob Bruenig, long count by Bob Greasy, drops straight back, looks left, Cox fires, man open.
- 5:02It's caught at the two and out of bounds. Dario Harris, speed air and Kyle.
- 5:07It'll be second down and one at the two-yard line.
- 5:10That was a little square out in a hurry, and the only thing that kept that from being six points was that the ball was up in the air
- 5:17long enough that Harris had to wait for it to come down. That gave Kyle time to get over.
- 5:21Harris made the catch, turned around, planted his feet, and Aaron had just enough angle that he was able to push him out about the two.
- 5:27But we've seen Dario Harris open a couple of times on that side now.
- 5:32And of course the one big play, if you just joined us, as they bring the chains across to measure, if you missed a play or two,
- 5:37the Dolphins have hit Dario Harris twice inside of Aaron Kyle.
- 5:43And then the big one was the rambling pass play to Delvin Williams, in which he got away from Bob Bruenig and picked up, oh, just another 40 yards or so on the thing.
- 5:53They have measured and discovered that the Dolphins have indeed made first down, and they'll have four shots to go, about a yard and a half.
- 6:02Laird McCreary comes in as an extra tight end, third year pro from Tennessee State.
- 6:07He will join Andre Tillman, and here come the Dolphins, threatening early in the game. We've only run off two and a half minutes so far.
- 6:14McCreary to the right side, and Tillman to the left. There's a swat man, that's Matt Moore. I sit behind Bob Greasy.
- 6:21Delvin Williams, the deep back, Boulash up short. The handoff goes to Delvin Williams, met and driven down at the line of scrimmage. No gain on the play.
- 6:28One thing we started to say about Williams a moment ago, he's got 887 yards on the year that's the best in the league, and the interesting thing about his statistic is that half, almost half of his yardage on something like five out of every eight plays,
- 6:45no, that's the other way, it's like almost 600 of the 800 yards on half of his carries have come on first down, and he has made 14 first downs running on first down. Long yardage, late downs, you're not going to see Williams with the ball much.
- 6:59They are back at the line of scrimmage on second and goal from the one. Again, the double tight end set, this time a regular set behind Bob Greasy.
- 7:06Greasy has it, handoff, Boulash, touchdown Miami. Left guard, six points. Didn't take long. No, lightning has struck in a hurry, and the orange bowl and little white handkerchiefs are being waved everywhere by doll fans, as I'm sure they like to call themselves.
- 7:27But again, the keys were the two pass plays to Duriel Harris, but the big one was Williams getting away from Brunig on the little pass in the flat. Boulash checks it in for the six, and Garo Yapremian is on to try the extra point.
- 7:40They'll kick toward the Dolphin, and the end zone to the south. Yapremian, the left-footed kicker. Long count, here's the snap, and Yapremian's kick, he hammers it home.
- 7:53There's a timeout on the field with our score, Miami 7, the Cowboys nothing. Dallas Cowboy football will continue after this word.
- 8:02Dolphins go 73 yards, it took them three minutes and five seconds, and they have cracked the scoreboard first, 7-0, Miami leads, 11.55 to go first quarter.
- 8:11Bush Johnson and Alois Blackwell, back to receive Yapremian's kick. Gorgeous day here in Miami, 80 degrees, no wind, no clouds. Here's Yapremian with the whistle from Gordon McCarter, short kick.
- 8:22Johnson comes up, it'll be Blackwell at the 13, Blackwell to the 20, 25, up to the 30, flag is thrown, he is knocked down at the 32-yard line, we could have a flipping call.
- 8:35Dackle is made by Charles Cornelius, but there is a flag on the play that could cost the Cowboys half the distance, that's it, nice start.
- 8:43Good thing they had a few extra days to rest up for this one. Yeah, right. Well of course, I mean as much as you hate to see it if you're a Cowboy fan, you can't be terribly surprised when Greasy comes out and picks you apart real early.
- 8:56Although again it was a missed tackle that let Williams get away, but penalties like this the Cowboys are going to have to avoid. Here's the call.
- 9:04First of all, number 59 receivers during the return. Well they got Guy Brown. I didn't know Gordon was going to be up here with us today. I knew that and I surprised you with it. Yes you did.
- 9:18First down, 10 for the Cowboys, they've got it now at their own 17-yard line. Drew Pearson and Butch Johnson or Tony Hill rather, Tony is starting despite the twisted knee, they go to the left.
- 9:27Newhouse and Dorsett in the backfield behind Staubeck, the handoff Newhouse coming left, looks for a block, doesn't get it, he is caught for a loss of one yard.
- 9:35Newhouse and Dorsett and Donovan were out there trying to find somebody to block, there were people there but they couldn't get to them. Curtis Johnson made the tackle.
- 9:42Offensive lineup for the Cowboys, Tony Hill and Drew Pearson, Billy Joe Dufrey a tight end, Ray Field right on the right tackle, Tom Rafferty at right guard, John Fitzgerald the center, Herb Scott and Pat Donovan complete the offensive line, Staubeck the quarterback, Dorsett and Newhouse in the offensive backfield.
- 9:58It will be second down, 11 Cowboys break and come up, Hill comes to the left side against Curtis Johnson and there are three men in the backfield.
- 10:08Drew Pearson goes in motion out of the backfield wide right, Staubeck hands it off to Dorsett, driven down, no game, may have fumbled on the play, he did, there is a Miami recovery.
- 10:21Herndon Herder made a tremendous defensive play. He exploded from around the left side into the middle where Dorsett carried the ball and as you perhaps heard Robert Newhouse say earlier in the week on our talk show at a restaurant,
- 10:37he said a lot of guys are trying to tackle the ball now when they tackle Tony and that's exactly what Den Herder did.
- 10:43He reached an arm in there, grabbed the ball as well as grabbing Tony. It was a tremendously explosive defensive play, stripped the ball free, Dolphins recover and they've got it at the 15 again.
- 10:537-0 lead, this has a feeling of deja vu over the Thursday night game against Minnesota.
- 10:59High formation behind Bob Greasy on first down 10, Miami leads at 7-0, they're knocking on the door again. Greasy, pitch out, left side, Delvin Williams, wiggles outside, is caught and dropped for a loss of one.
- 11:09Nice defensive play by Mark Washington. It'll be second down 11.
- 11:15Of course last Thursday night, a week ago, Larry Brinson fumbled the opening kickoff and then Dorsett fumbled on the 38 yard line in the Cowboys first series and Minnesota went up 14-0 quickly in that game
- 11:27and Miami is threatening to do exactly that here this afternoon. 11-06 to go first quarter, Harvey Martin clapping his hands, urging his teammates on. It's second and 11.
- 11:37Greasy is perfect so far, he is 3 for 3 for 69 yards. Andre Tillman comes tight to the right side and there's a wide split behind Bob Greasy on second down, he drops straight back to throw,
- 11:51four man rush, goes right, has a man open, caught it for five, dizzier tackle at the one yard line, it's first down goal, Miami. The tackle is made by the tight end, Andre Tillman.
- 12:01Tillman ran a great pattern and Greasy of course as he does so well, put the ball right on the money and Tillman just curled in front of Cliff Harris for the free safety who picked him up at about the 2 but the ball was over Tillman's shoulder, it couldn't have been thrown any better.
- 12:18First down goal, Miami. They were just here a minute ago, 10-15 to go first quarter, here come the Dolphins. Greasy is 4 for 4 now for 84 yards. Double tight end set, McCreary to the left side, Andre Tillman to the right, Nat Moore in the slot.
- 12:32Boulash and Delvin Williams in the backfield. Bob Greasy has it, hand off Boulash, same play, didn't get in, he's caught at the one. Thomas Henderson up around the shoulders to make the tackle, that is the same play they scored on a couple of minutes back.
- 12:46Great tackle by Henderson who wrapped him up strong as well as high and then Bruning came over and helped finish him off but Thomas just looked like he didn't want to let Storm and Norman come through that hole.
- 12:57Picked up about the length of the football on the play, Cowboys have their goal line defense in of course which means Cliff Harris is out, there's an extra linebacker in.
- 13:05Here come the Dolphins again, McCreary to the left side and Tillman to the right and the slot on the right side.
- 13:13Bob Greasy starts the count. Now has it, hand off Boulash, driving, did he get in? There is one signal from a player but none from the officials.
- 13:22I don't think so.
- 13:23Nope, he did not. It will be third and goal from the one.
- 13:25Vern Henderson was in there again although I'm not sure Thomas wasn't the second man to the ball. Bruning was number one. Bruning and Henderson cut him off up the middle.
- 13:36It will be third down and goal. They're the length of the football away from the end zone. Dolphins huddle back at the ten.
- 13:45Cowboys break their defensive huddle. Up front Harvey Martin, Randy White, Chetro, Q and Ed Jones. Here comes Miami, they have a 7-0 lead and a third and goal from the one foot line.
- 13:56Again the slot to the right side. Boulash directly behind Bob Greasy, Williams to the left. Greasy has begun the count as it hands it off to Delvin Williams, drives and scores to the right guard. It's 13-0 Miami.
- 14:13Larry Little of course is not all pro every year for nothing and that's a typical Larry Little block power drive block and Williams went right in over the back.
- 14:24Williams is checking the statistics. He's only been in the end zone about a million times all year. That's his fifth touchdown rushing and he's caught a couple as well. Here's Yopremian to try the extra point.
- 14:36Don Strauch will hold as Miami tries to go up 14-0. This is exactly what happened against the Vikings. Here's Yopremian's kick and he has got it.
- 14:46There's a timeout on the field with our score Miami 14 and the Cowboys nothing. Dallas Cowboys football continues in a moment.
- 14:54To play with 8 minutes and 44 seconds remaining in the first quarter. It took 6 minutes for Minnesota to score two times on the Thursday night game. The Dolphins have done it in 5 minutes and 16 seconds.
- 15:06It's 14-0 Miami has the lead and Yopremian will kick off again. Blackwell and Butch Johnson wait for it near the 10 yard line. Gordon McCarter has his hand raised upright. Here comes Yopremian.
- 15:18A squib kick by Yopremian taken on the fly by Randy White. White to the 30. White wiggling to the right side is up and out of bounds at the 39 yard line. Pretty good run by the big defensive tackle.
- 15:28Little swivel hits. So the Cowboys get it for the second offensive series. They fumbled the last time. They didn't. Dorset did. There's a sign in the stands here today that says we're going to take the corset off Dorset.
- 15:43Or corset off Dorset as it should be. As it should be. It's the most telling statistic coming into the game. Cowboys minus 8 in the takeaway giveaway department.
- 15:52Dolphins lead the league with a plus 12. Now it's 13. First down 10 if the Cowboys 40 will officially call it because the length of the football is across the 39. Starbuck's control.
- 16:01Two steps back. White flat. It's caught by Dufre at the 42 and he's felt it down after a game of about 3.
- 16:08That was a great catch because Kim Boekempfer who may be one of the best outside linebackers in the league certainly is the strongest I should think.
- 16:19It was all over Billy Joe. He found a way to hang on and Boekempfer tried to strip him of the ball and couldn't.
- 16:27You know, Boekempfer with his size and strength even though the Dolphins play the three man front he's almost like another defensive end.
- 16:34It's second down 7. Dallas at their own 42 yard line. Regular set behind Starbuck. Now Dorset shifts into the eye.
- 16:41Starbuck has it. Handoff Dorset. Tony met up the line. Knocked down. No game. Bob Baumhauer the nose guard. Second year pro out of Alabama.
- 16:50A step back Miami defense for you. The 3-4 defense. Burned in. Hurder at left end. Bob Baumhauer in the middle. A.J. Dewey on the right end.
- 16:58The linebackers are Kim Boekempfer, Bob Matheson, Rusty Chambers and Larry Gorton. The cornerbacks Norris Thomas and Curtis Johnson and the safeties are Tim Foley and Rick Gould.
- 17:07Third down and six. Dallas 726 to go first quarter. They trail 14 nothing. Drew Pearson and Tony Hill both wide right. Cowboys go from the spread formation.
- 17:17Miami showing a blitz look. Here's the snap. It's low. Starbuck picks it up. Blitz is on. He rolls out to his right.
- 17:23Rolls up going deep way down field for Dupree. He is open and passes over throw. Dupree gave up on the ball. Billy Joe apparently never saw it.
- 17:33Norris Thomas the cornerback is jumping up and down claiming offensive pass interference. But they were jockeying together for position and I think you're right Burn.
- 17:43He probably never saw it because with the shadows extending over that half of the field he's looking right into the sun.
- 17:50Starbuck for one thing was lucky to get away from the blitz of Boekempfer and then put the ball up there and Thomas kind of slowed up on his coverage.
- 17:56I thought Billy Joe might have a chance to pull it down but that was obviously the point when he had not seen it. So Danny White will come on and putt it.
- 18:04Jimmy Cepolo is the deep man for Miami. The deep man of three. Eight man putt. Here's the snap for White. Danny kicks it up to the right side.
- 18:13Nice kick. He's angling toward the corner. Cepolo has it at the six to the ten. Comes right to the 15. He is up near the 17 yard line. A flag is also thrown.
- 18:23As Henderson calls for a clip and I think Miami may be found guilty of clipping there is a flag down.
- 18:29Kick of 50 yards for Danny White. Who's really in a groove right now. Boy isn't he though.
- 18:37Cepolo I remember the first time seeing Cepolo was it is by the way a clip against Miami.
- 18:42First time I saw Cepolo was when he was a freshman on the Penn State team that played Baylor in the Cotton Bowl in January of 75 I guess it would be.
- 18:52Is that right? No that can't be right. Yeah. 74 seasons. Here's the call.
- 19:02Receivers during the return. That was on Gerald Small. Rookie from San Jose State. You were right ahead. Well no don't. There's a time out.
- 19:10There's a time out to deal with our score. The Dolphins 14 and the Cowboys nothing. Dallas Cowboys football continues after this word.
- 19:17Dolphins get it back for the third time here in the first quarter. This time they've got fairly indecent field position. They are at the seven following the clip call.
- 19:26652 to go first quarter. Anyway there's a lot of time. Yeah go ahead. Which will fill some of that time.
- 19:34When he was a freshman on that Penn State team that played and then won the Cotton Bowl and did a lot of things for Joe Paterno's club.
- 19:41There was a kind of a wing back wide receiver and he's really done pretty well with the Dolphins. He returns a lot of kicks and catches.
- 19:48And he's also got to be the only rookie in the NFL who's already written the book. Biography at the age of 22 huh? I'll tell you what.
- 19:55First down set. Greasy has him at the line with a double tight end set. Eye formation in the backfield.
- 20:01Bob Greasy calls the count. Hands it off to the short man that's a new full back in there.
- 20:06And I'm going to find out who it was here in a second. Didn't see who carried it. Maybe Braxton. I believe it is Jim Braxton. Leroy Harris.
- 20:19Oh Leroy has come back in. Alright. There we go. They've got three full backs and they move them in and out because Leroy Harris has not been healthy all year.
- 20:28And Braxton they got from Washington via Buffalo. Gain of one. Second down nine at the eight yard line.
- 20:34Eye set this time. One wide receiver wide to the left side. That's Nat Moore. Here's Leroy Harris again driven down by Randy White at the 11 yard line.
- 20:41It'll be third down and five or six depending on where they spot the ball.
- 20:46White with the tackle and we'll have third down for the Dolphins. They lead 14-0 with six minutes to go in the first quarter.
- 20:54Now they're going to take out tight end McCrary and they're going to bring in Cepolo and Harris. Take out the full back.
- 21:05They're going to take out both their tight ends and go with a wing back and the two split receivers.
- 21:10So they got people running in pass routes all over the place. A third down and we'll call it six. Dolphins at their own 11 yard line.
- 21:18Cowboys in the prevent defense. Here's Greasy handing off up the middle to Delvin Williams. He's caught at the 17 and I do not think he got enough for the first down.
- 21:27It'll be very close. Bob Guggenberg is signaling first down but they're going to bring the chain out.
- 21:33Cowboys have been victimized by that draw play many, many times. Randy White had some comments on Bob Greasy.
- 21:40He's a team player. He's an unselfish kind of a player. He just as soon run for first down as passed for first down.
- 21:46He's won a Super Bowl so he has a lot of experience. He's been injured and since he's been back with the team they've gained a lot of momentum.
- 21:54And when he's in there he has a lot to remind the Dolphins football team.
- 21:57And in the background the cheers indicate that they just got the first down by about two inches.
- 22:02So the Dolphins keep going now with the first down at their own 17. Williams crossed them up. Draw play on third down.
- 22:08You got to give Greasy a lot of credit on that situation. They're looking past. They've set in obviously the passing team.
- 22:13Taking out the tight ends. Brought in the extra wing back and he calls a draw play and it works.
- 22:18Greasy has the crowd to be quiet as the Dolphins break the huddle and come up.
- 22:22Durial Harris wide right and Atmore wide left.
- 22:25Greasy play action. Pulls out to the right side. Completes the pass to Durial Harris but he is caught and dropped at the line of scrimmage.
- 22:30A nice play by Mark Washington.
- 22:35No gain on the play. Greasy has been perfect so far. He's six for six.
- 22:40Not a bad start.
- 22:43We've probably got a quartet of things to come in the middle of the line on that play as the play came to the strong side.
- 22:50Randy White got a double team block from the guards, Larry Little and Ed Newman, and got put on his back, which two men on you will do from time to time.
- 22:59Second down. We'll call it ten.
- 23:02This time Harris again wide right and Atmore wide left.
- 23:05Greasy straight back to throw. They fired out to the left side. It is caught. Here's the completion coming up to the 25, 27 yard line.
- 23:16Norm Bloulaich, no Leroy Harris made the catch. Couldn't see out there. Little running back out of the backfield. They may have gotten another first down.
- 23:23The reason that we are pausing from time to time as we try to spot these people way, way down there, the thing you can say about our booth is that it's small but it sure is far away.
- 23:33Listen, I have done two games from here, one on the roof and one from a cardboard shack to the right of the press box, so all things considered this may be better.
- 23:43Although I've never known you quite so well.
- 23:47First down and ten at the 27 yard line. Dolphins have picked up 20 yards on the current series.
- 23:53Both wide receivers wide to the right side and Greasy is going to throw again.
- 23:57Lots of time. Clips it out on the right flat. The cut was made by Dario Harris and he slipped when he made the cut.
- 24:03And the first incomplete pass for Greasy this afternoon.
- 24:07Cowboys have not gotten much of a pass rush on Greasy yet at all.
- 24:11And Burn, they are missing some tackles. Obviously Burnick missing Delvin Williams on the long pass out in the flat that helped set up the first touchdown.
- 24:21But the play before last, Leroy Harris put a little move on Aaron Kyle who had a shot at him and he got away.
- 24:27And you almost can see the confidence of the Cowboy defense slowly eroding a little bit.
- 24:33Second down and ten at the 27 yard line. 14-0 Miami leading 329 to go first quarter.
- 24:40Andre Tillman comes tight to the right side. Texas Tech graduate. Greasy will throw again.
- 24:45Here comes the four man rush. He's got time. Man wide open out in the flat. Delvin Williams in the 40. To the 45. First down at the Miami 46.
- 24:53He was absolutely all by himself. Let's pause 15 seconds for station identification. This is the Dallas Cowboys radio network.
- 25:02The Dallas Cowboys defend their Super Bowl titles this year on KTAR Phoenix.
- 25:18At the current rate, Bob Greasy will pass for 452 yards this afternoon. He's got 113 already in the first quarter.
- 25:27He's seven out of eight. It's first down ten at the 46. Leroy Harris directly behind Greasy. He gets the handoff.
- 25:35Darts through. There's a flag thrown as Harris is caught at the 49 of the Cowboys by Jethro Pugh.
- 25:40May have a call against the Dolphins on this play. They are retreating. And it's a holding call against Miami.
- 25:49By the way, those of you listening on our mutual radio network today, you're getting a double mutual broadcast.
- 25:55We've got some other mutual folks right next to us. So periodically if you can hear voices in the background, which I certainly can, that's who it is.
- 26:03They're doing a national deal for the state's, wait a minute, here's a call.
- 26:07Number 62 offense. Repeat first down.
- 26:11All-Pro Center, Jim Langer. A national broadcast that reaches the states outside of our network area.
- 26:18And I'm not sure they even really need the microphone to reach Delaware and Augusta, Maine and all those other places.
- 26:24I remember a game I did earlier this year for ABC and put the headsets on and in my left ear the local radio broadcast was there through the duration of the game.
- 26:33That got a little confusing. That'll improve your concentration. That's right. It's first down and 20.
- 26:38Greasy will throw. Blitz is coming. He's going deep across the middle. Tillman's out there all by himself. Has the ball at the Cowboy 31.
- 26:45Johnny Waters let him go. Tillman with a huge gain.
- 26:53As Vern said, they beat the Blitz.
- 26:57And I guess because of the Blitz they probably had to adjust their coverage responsibility because you don't normally see the strong safety on the other side of the field from the tight end.
- 27:07But Tillman worked a post from the left side. Looks like Charlie Waters was picking up an area of responsibility on the other side.
- 27:16And boy was Andre Tillman all over. Matter of fact, Charlie made a heck of a tackle to keep him from breaking it all the way.
- 27:21First down 10 at the Cowboy 31. Miami has driven now from their own 7 yard line to this part of Vakridge.
- 27:27Greasy high formation. Up and down set. Why not? He'll throw again. Looks deep. He is caught and finally dropped at the 41.
- 27:33Cowboys get a sack. Sack is made by Thomas Henderson Blitzing on the play.
- 27:38Greasy is 8 out of 9 for 146 yards.
- 27:44He's hitting like 63 percent, almost 64 percent coming in. And his average per attempt, what is it that they like to hit, that they shoot for, is a goal?
- 27:54Well his average per attempt coming in was 7.4. And he's not going to hurt it any today if he quits right back down.
- 28:00Strach may start warming up soon.
- 28:02Second down and 19 at the 40, we'll call it officially the 40 yard line of the Cowboys.
- 28:07And here come the Dolphins. Juriel Harris goes left. Nat Moore comes right. Aaron Kyle will work on him.
- 28:14As the Cowboys have switched their cornerbacks, Kyle is on the left side and Mark Washington on the right. Here's Greasy back to throw.
- 28:21He goes across the middle. Tillman is open again. Waters makes the tackle. But they picked up a bunch and they've got a third down at the 27.
- 28:30That was obviously Charlie Waters' responsibility.
- 28:33Although I'm just trying to figure when you're looking at a second down and 20 as they were, I'm not sure the Cowboys were in a zone coverage.
- 28:42Normally, I mean if I knew enough about the way they play the flex, you know I'd probably be down there coaching, which I obviously don't.
- 28:50But normally in a second down and 20 like that, you're in a zone and Waters had to come in out of his zone to get Tillman.
- 28:58But there's got to be a breakdown, Vern, when the guy's at all alone.
- 29:01He's got a second down and six free wide receivers in again. Greasy now, nine out of ten for 159 in the first quarter.
- 29:08Up and down set, he'll throw. Looks right, blitzes on, flips a pass out short. For Bullish, it's fourth down.
- 29:14Cowboys had Henderson coming that time. And it'll be fourth down and Garrow, your premium, will come on to try and make it 17 to nothing.
- 29:23The drive finally stalls, but they went from their own seven to the Cowboys' 27 and your premium will try and tack on a three pointer with 20 seconds to go in the first quarter.
- 29:33Can you vote for a guy all world at his position when he only plays half a season?
- 29:37He's looked that way today, hasn't he? The kick will come from the 35-yard line.
- 29:44It will be a 45-yard field goal from the right hash mark, or left hash mark rather. Cowboys only have ten men on the field. Now here comes Brunig late.
- 29:53He's on the field now. Here's the snap, a little high, your premium gets the kick on the way and it's got plenty of distance. It is good.
- 30:02From 45 yards out, your premium has made it 17-nothing.
- 30:07There's a timeout on the field with our score. Miami 17, the Cowboys zip. Dallas Cowboys football continues in a moment.
- 30:15Back to play in the Orange Bowl with 14 seconds to go in the first quarter. The Cowboys are still looking for their first first down and Miami has 17 points.
- 30:25It's 17-zip and your premium is getting set to kick off again. Last time he kicked short.
- 30:31The lowest black well in Butch Johnson are deep in case it gets back that far. Gordon McCarter, hand up raised and we'll wait for the whistle now.
- 30:41Here comes your premium. Squib kick again. It'll bounce at the 17, taken by Butch Johnson at the 10.
- 30:48To the 20, 25, tries to get outside, is knocked out of bounds at the 29-yard line. Laird McCreary made the tackle, first down, ten Dallas at their own 29.
- 30:57Looking for their first first down of the game. Greasy is now 9 of 11 for 159. Stabach one out of three for three.
- 31:14Total time of possession so far, 12 minutes and 32 seconds for Miami, 2 minutes and 14 seconds for the Cowboys. Oh, that's called domination.
- 31:24First down, ten. Stabach has him at the line of scrimmage. Newhouse and Dorstead in the backfield, Newhouse directly behind Stabach.
- 31:30Play action. Roger rolls out to his right, pulls up, can't find anybody. Bocamper has him, holds him down, a flag is thrown.
- 31:38Kim Bocamper with the tackle. We could have had a face mask over there, I'm not sure.
- 31:45That is the last play of the quarter, but we'll see what the flag is. Face mask against the Dolphins.
- 31:54So that will move the ball downfield. They will step off five yards, unintentional face mask. And that is the end of the quarter with our score.
- 32:06Miami 17, the Cowboys nothing. Dallas Cowboys football continues after this word. We are back for the second quarter from the Orange Bowl of Miami.
- 32:17The Cowboys trailing 17-0 have gone the first 15 minutes of the game without picking up a first down, ten.
- 32:24You know, in a way, this is even more distressing than the game against Minnesota Thursday night because the Cowboys really got it together after the first six minutes in that game.
- 32:35And of course they haven't had a chance to get it together, but defensively they haven't. The Dolphins are just shoving it right down their throats.
- 32:44Certainly so far. Time of possession once again in that first quarter, 12-32 to 2-14, 2-24 actually, when you tack on the final ten seconds that elapsed in that last play.
- 32:57Well, the role of an analyst is to analyze, and now Brad Cham will tell us what's going on.
- 33:01Oh, I'll get you for that. We've got enough road trips left, I'll get you for that.
- 33:08What's going on very simply is that the Miami Dolphins are playing better football today than the Dallas Cowboys.
- 33:14That's that old on any given Sunday business.
- 33:16Yeah, you betcha. You betcha.
- 33:18Here come the Cowboys, first down, ten. They did pick up a first down on the face mask violation. They've got the ball at their own 34.
- 33:25They have not been across midfield yet. Dorsett to the right side, Newhouse to the left. Dupree is in the slot, now comes in motion.
- 33:32The handoff to Tony Dorsett up the middle, squirts out to the 40, picks up six yards.
- 33:36It'll be second down and four. Rusty Chambers made the tackle in that 3-4 defense.
- 33:42That's that little tight end in motion play that the Cowboys like to run, and you can watch it usually when you see the tight end come in motion late in the snap count.
- 33:51And he comes in motion about to the middle of the line. Watch him block down, which is what Billy Joe did, and then the tailback is going to come right through that hole.
- 33:59And that's where he got six yards on that play.
- 34:01Second down and four, and Jackie Smith comes in the lineup as an extra tight end. He is tied right to Dupree to the left side.
- 34:06Staubach, handoff, Newhouse. Robert steps into a tackle, then out of it, and he is caught just short of the first down at the 43-yard line.
- 34:13As A.J. Dewey makes the stop, it'll be third down and one.
- 34:17One thing I can analyze is what's happening elsewhere in the league. There's no problem whatsoever.
- 34:21Final scores, Minnesota beat Detroit 17-7. New England hung on to beat Buffalo 14-10. Pittsburgh had 20-14. Is that correct? That's not right.
- 34:32I heard a different score from that. I heard 23-21 at one time.
- 34:35Yeah. Okay. Cardinals won again, beat the Giants 20-10.
- 34:39Third down and one, Cowboys. Double tight end Seth Butch Johnson, slot to the right side.
- 34:43Big split behind Staubach, and Preston Pearson is in the offensive backfield in place of Dorsett.
- 34:47Quarterback draw. Roger has the first down. He's across the 50 to the 49-yard line of the Dolphins. They may spot the ball at the 50.
- 34:54So Staubach picks up the first down on the keeper, and it's just inside Miami country at the 49-and-a-half-yard line.
- 35:03Let's just quickly look at some of the other scores. The first quarter, San Diego leading Cincinnati 3-0.
- 35:08Fourth period, Cleveland 10, Houston 7. Fourth period, Philadelphia somewhat surprisingly with injured running backs leading Green Bay, who the Cowboys visit next week, 10-3.
- 35:18I'll give you a couple more in a minute.
- 35:20First down, 10. Dallas, Dupree to the left side. Eye set behind the quarterback. Now they shift. Now shift back into the eye.
- 35:27Roger Staubach has it. Play action. He fakes to Dorsett, goes back to throw, up in the pocket, hit as he lets it fly. Newhouse drops the ball.
- 35:34Was right in his midst. Roger did a tremendous job just to get rid of the pass. And he hit Newhouse right in the middle. And Robert drops it.
- 35:45A couple of the scores quickly. Denver leading the Jets 14-0. Fourth quarter, Oakland over Kansas City 14-3. Atlanta beats San Francisco 21-10.
- 35:54Seattle beat the Bears. Bye-bye Bears. 31-29. Seattle a final. Los Angeles leading Tampa Bay 3-0 in the first period.
- 36:01It is second down, 10, here in the Orange Bull. 17-0 Miami leading with 12-58 to go in the first half.
- 36:08Drew Pearson goes to the left side. And Tony Hill is wide right. Eye set. Staubach to throw. Three-man rush. Lots of time for Roger.
- 36:16Goes in the flat to Dorsett. He's one-on-one at the 50. Caught and dropped at the 50. It'll be third down and 10.
- 36:27Bob Bomhauer, the defensive tackle, did not go for the hip fake. The Tony Dorsett had made the stop.
- 36:33Here comes Burton Lawless with a play call in from Tom Landry. And the Cowboys also send Preston Pearson in the offensive backfield.
- 36:39They will go with a shotgun formation. And the prevent defense now for the Miami Dolphins.
- 36:44And they're really in the same kind of spot they were last Thursday. The offense has to partially be dictated by the score.
- 36:49Absolutely. Tony Hill wide left. Drew Pearson wide right. And the spread formation. Now Preston Pearson goes back as a blocking back.
- 36:58John Fitzgerald snaps it back. Staubach drops back. Goes across the middle. Has Drew Pearson open for the first down at the 38-yard line.
- 37:06And Drew's string is now to 55 consecutive games in which he's caught a pass. Norman Thores Thomas makes the tackle.
- 37:13I don't know if this is a poor temp. But that's the same play, the same pattern that Drew ran last play only on the other side.
- 37:22He ran it on the left side the play before. He passed in the flat to Dorsett. And he was open both times curling inside of Norris Thomas.
- 37:29So we might want to watch for that. First down 10 on the third down conversions. Dorsett is out. Preston Pearson is in.
- 37:35And the Cowboys have it at the 37 of Miami, their deepest penetration so far. They began this drive at their own 29.
- 37:44Up and down set for the Cowboys. They have a power eye formation. It's a wishbone now. But Drew Pearson breaks and goes to the left side.
- 37:50Staubach play action. Goes back to throw. Up. Caught. And sacked. The 47-yard line.
- 37:56Burn damn Herter got to him. And it's a loss all the way back to the 47. Looks like he was trying to set up a screen pass.
- 38:07The Dolphins had five sacks of the Baltimore Colts last week in a relatively easy win that they had sewed up at halftime and just cruised the second half.
- 38:19And in this game, what is that, two sacks already? 11-07 to go. First half 17-0 Miami. Cowboys second down and 20 at the Miami 47.
- 38:31Here come the folks. Tony Hill goes left. Drew Pearson comes right. Ball is on the far hash mark.
- 38:40Eyes set. Now the ship in the backfield. Staubach hands it off the doorstep. Power sweep to the right side. Gets a block. Breaks the tackle. He's to the 45. His helmet is almost taken off.
- 38:50A flag is blown. He's down at the 40. We may have another face mask.
- 38:55I should say we'd have some kind of a call on Rick Volk, the free safety, who just took a swipe at Tony's headgear.
- 39:02Burton Lawless leading on the sweep through a couple of pretty good blocks and we do get the face mask call against Miami. And when we get the call up here momentarily, we ought to hear, I should think, that it's on number 21.
- 39:16Tony's head really snapped back once the contact was made. He was down at the 40. Now they'll step off five yards to the 35. And here is the call from Gordon McCarter.
- 39:28Face mask. Number 21 defense. Automatic first down.
- 39:33So the Cowboys get new life following the sack. They've got the ball at the 35 yard line of Miami. And I would think, Mr. Schaen, that you could call this a fairly critical drive.
- 39:43Well, the Cowboys have got to, as we've talked about in the past, establish, if nothing else, their own confidence that they can get on the board and they've got to do it in a hurry.
- 39:51Double side end set for the Cowboys on first down. Miami 35 yard line. Drew Pearson goes in motion all the way across the offensive line, wide at the left side. The handoff up the middle of the door set.
- 40:00He is tackled and bopped after a gain of one.
- 40:03Bob Bomhauer, the nose guard, fought off the block of John Fitzgerald to make the stop. It's second down and nine Cowboys at the 34.
- 40:11Part of this back to the basics kind of a thing, the Lukenbacher football, Bob Lilly had some interesting comments that people may hopefully have heard on the pregame show today.
- 40:22Bob said in 1970 when the Cowboys did that after they got embarrassed by the Cardinals on that Monday night game, what that involved offensively was a lot of zone blocking for the linemen.
- 40:31Just instead of a lot of fancy stuff, I'm going to block the guy in front of me. I haven't really noticed a lot of that today.
- 40:36It's second down and nine. Newhouse in the backfield, door set goes in motion wide left. Roger dances back to throw, humps it out in the right flat for Dufrey and he's knocked out of bounds at the 32 yard line.
- 40:47It'll be third down about seven. Kim Volcamper makes the tackle.
- 40:54Pass is complete, but Philly Joe didn't have a whole lot of room over on the left side. Bob Matheson comes in now.
- 41:00And Steve Toll leaves.
- 41:03And now Charlie Babs comes in, so does Gerald Small. Six defensive backs for the Dolphins.
- 41:09Well, Rusty Chambers comes out and so does Curtis Johnson.
- 41:14Third down and seven, Cowboys from the spread. At the Miami 32 yard line, they converted a third down 10 a moment ago.
- 41:22Fitzgerald over the ball. Three man rush, four man rush. Saubach back, drills it deep across the middle and is caught close for the first down at the 24 yard line.
- 41:32They may give Philly Joe Dufrey the 23 and if so the drive does stay alive. Tackle is made by Tim Foley.
- 41:38That should be a first down. They're going to get him the 23 because the line is the point that they had to reach was the 25 and he clearly caught the ball in advance of that point.
- 41:48So the Cowboys keep the drive alive, keep it moving and they march down to the 23 yard line and as Vern said a moment ago, they just really have to have six points here.
- 42:00Tony Hill goes wide to the left side against Curtis Johnson. Drew Pearson comes wide right against Norris Thomas.
- 42:05Eyes set in the offensive backfield. The handoff to Newhouse straight up the center. Robert plunging across the 20 inside the 18 to the 17 as Baumhauer makes the stop.
- 42:16Ran behind Herb Scott that time and of course not only do the Dolphins play that 3-4 which is a little bit different to defense than some things you see.
- 42:26Oh they got such great big people in there. What a job of drafting they've done over the last few years.
- 42:31That indeed but ironically they have been suspect defensively this year. They've got a great young defense though.
- 42:38It's second down and four for the Cowboys. Gain them six in the last play. Dufrey in motion wide to the left side now.
- 42:45Staubach has it. Pitch out Newhouse. Power sweep to the left. He's to the 15 and jammed up. Great open field tackle. It will be third and two.
- 42:52See a lot of the defensive problems they had though came earlier in the year when Duley was hurt. Baumhauer was hurt.
- 42:59Maddison was hurt. You're talking about guys who are all playing again now. Yeah that's right. Larry Gordon made the stop on the last play.
- 43:06It will be third down two at the 15 yard line. Cowboys trailing 17 nothing with eight minutes to go in the first half of play.
- 43:12They have controlled the ball now from their own 29 to the Miami 15. 17 nothing. Dolphins lead. Hill left side. Pearson wide right.
- 43:23Preston Pearson in the backfield in place of Dorsett. Roger Staubach in the cockpit. Has it. Draw play Preston Pearson.
- 43:30Comes right to the 10 to the five. Driving first and goal. Dallas at the three. He says he can run. You give him a chance and he shows that he can run.
- 43:40He's got him fully made the tackle. Very well executed draw. And Preston sliced up the middle and he had a great block from Fitzgerald in the middle of things.
- 43:50And he had a lead block from Rayfield right. And then it's just that glide pattern and he gets all the way down to the two yard line and the Cowboys with a chance to cash it in now on first down.
- 44:01And Preston Pearson stays in the offensive backfield. Dorsett is on the bench. It's first and goal at the two. Double tight end set.
- 44:07Staubach barking out the count. He audibles and Newhouse shifts directly behind him. Roger now has it. Hand off Newhouse. Left guard. Jammed up. Knocked down. No game.
- 44:16Curtis Johnson met him high. Had some help low. Preston came out of the backfield and shook a block onto Johnson and then peeled off to try to block down on the goal line.
- 44:28But Johnson rolling off that block and Newhouse ran right into his arms. May have lost a half a foot on the play. It'll be second down and goal from the two and a half yard line.
- 44:37Cowboys huddle back to the ten. Drew Pearson goes out. Here comes the Dallas offense dressed in blue. But Johnson is in there now as a slumpback.
- 44:44Jackie Smith tight right. Dupree tight left. Preston Pearson and Robert Newhouse with the running back.
- 44:50Staubach again with a count. The hand off Newhouse. Left side met and driven down. Driven back to the four.
- 44:57Curtis Johnson again. It'll be third and goal from the four.
- 45:03Herb Scott had his lead block. But Johnson coming up from the secondary road behind that. Got in, got a hand on Robert who tried to slide away to the left.
- 45:13And Johnson held him up just long enough to get some help. So now it is third down and a long four yards away and Newhouse will come out as the Cowboys will
- 45:25put in their long yardage shotgun offense I should think. Here come the Cowboys. Regular set. Preston Pearson the lone setback with two wide receivers and two tight ends.
- 45:37It's third and goal from the four yard line. Cowboys trailing 17-0. Staubach the throw looks left. He is caught and dropped back at the 12 yard line.
- 45:45A.J. Dewey a sensational goal line stand by the Miami Dolphins. And the Cowboys will have to go for the field goal. A.J. Dewey ate Herb Scott's lunch on net play and there wasn't any fancy stunts or blitz or cha-cha or red dog or anything else.
- 46:03Dewey just reached up and threw Scott to the ground and showing why he was the defensive rookie of the year last season he just blew in and wrapped Staubach up and Septian will be on to try a 30 yard field goal.
- 46:15Charlie Waters will hold it at the 20. It's on the left hash mark. Cowboys have got to come out of this with something. Here's the snap and Septian's kick. It's up and it is good and the Cowboys are on the board.
- 46:27There's a time out on the field with our score now. Miami 17 and the Cowboys 3. A sensational cheer for Miami as Dallas Cowboys football continues in a moment.
- 46:39Dallas Cowboys had possession of the football for 10 minutes and 9 seconds and they come up with three points. They had a first and goal at the 2 and wound up with a fourth down at their own 12.
- 46:50But at least they did get on the board and we've got 5.05 to go and Miami's about to get it for the first time in the second quarter. Dario Harris, Jimmy Cepolo and Gary Davis are deep.
- 46:59Rafael Septian who's now 6 out of 11 on field goals for the year will kick it off. Gordon McCarter gives him the whistle.
- 47:06Septian approaches the ball. Goes to the left side. It bounces and goes out of bounds at the 10. We'll kick it again from the 30 yard line.
- 47:15The Dolphins deep backs alertly seeing the ball angling for the sideline. Wisely choose to let it go out of bounds.
- 47:22No serious error in judgment there. No, not whatsoever. A smart play by Gary Davis.
- 47:29Yes, I can read sign language, absolutely.
- 47:36I tell you I was doing a college game in North Carolina State a couple of weeks ago and saw a kid named Wayne McLean grab a kickoff and step out of bounds at the 3 and I said, gosh, that's a serious error in judgment.
- 47:46I think I've seen something similar to that before this year. Nobody there knew what I was talking about either.
- 47:54But we do up here. It's the Cowboys kicking off at the 30. 17 to 3 with just under five minutes to go in the first half and the shadows beginning to lengthen dramatically in the Orange Bulls.
- 48:09The shadows do.
- 48:13Septian will try it from the 30. And Dario Harris moves up to the 5 waiting for it.
- 48:22Here comes the approach by Septian straight down the middle this time. Harris nice kick as it is the one back to the five to the 15.
- 48:30Now to the 20, 25 to the 30 and it's all down to the 31 yard line.
- 48:36Pretty good run back also. Aaron Kyle made the tackle. Miami gets it for the first time in this quarter, but they've still got a 14 point lead 17 to 3.
- 48:45I don't really expect to see the kicker making great plays on the kickoff return, but at Septian turned around at about the 25 yard line, he would have seen Dario Harris dancing ever so lightly right by him.
- 48:57Well, let's see what Mr. Greasy has in mind. He's nine out of 11 for 159 so far. He sends Dario Harris wide left against Aaron Kyle and that more is wide right against Mark Washington.
- 49:08Andre Tillman who's caught three comes over to the left side. Greasy looks out left, hands it off to Delvin Williams behind the line, caught and dropped back to the 27 yard line.
- 49:17Tackle made by Harvey Martin. It'll be second down and 13. Harvey made the tackle, but Dee Dee Lewis helped bottle things up. He came out and neutralized Leroy Harris to full back.
- 49:29They both went to the ground, but it had to slow Williams up long enough for Harvey to come in and make the stop.
- 49:34Harvey doesn't seem to be affected by that knee injury that he's had, but then on the other hand the defense really had much chance to look at guys running at him.
- 49:44Greasy's been throwing it all day. Cowboys go to the prevent defense. Dennis Thurman and Randy Hughes come in. Benny Barnes apparently not going to play today.
- 49:51It's second down and 13. Greasy nine out of 11. Cowboys four man rush, draw play to Boulash right side, gets the three back to the 30 yard line. It'll be third down and 10.
- 50:00Randy White and Cliff Harris. This is so much like what they did a week ago. As we mentioned before, they got a big lead on Baltimore and clearly had the game in hand to their satisfaction.
- 50:09We do have a cowboy player down as the doctors come on out to have a look at him. We'll tell you more about what the Dolphins did last week momentarily.
- 50:18There is a time out on the field with our score, the Cowboys three and Miami 17. Dallas Cowboy football continues after this word.

- 51:32Well he has that thing that he really got in the second Giants game when he made a tackle on Willie Spencer and hit him in the hip and that kind of jammed the nerve in his neck
- 51:42and it's recurred from time to time over the last few weeks and I know from talking to Cliff during any given week out of the practice field he says it still bothers him a little bit in the way he walked off.
- 51:54His head was kind of bowed over and he was holding his neck and shoulders and it looked like that pinched nerve was bothering him.
- 52:00We're back to play now. Third down and ten. Miami at their own 30 yard line with a 14 point lead. Randy Hughes is in place of Cliff Harris.
- 52:06Tillman comes to the right side, left side rather. Greasy with a long count. Hands it off to Delvin Williams. Power sweep coming left and he's knocked down at the 35 and the Dolphins will have to kick.
- 52:16Bob Roenig and Randy Hughes made the tackle. It'll be four down.
- 52:20Again this is we started to say what they did last week. They got to the point against Baltimore where they felt they had the game in hand.
- 52:26They wrapped it up by throwing a touchdown pass off a fake field goal and then the rest of the way, the whole second half, they did that kind of thing.
- 52:33Third and ten and they run it off tackle and take up some time and grind it out and make the other guy play catch up against their defense.
- 52:40We will now look at George Roberts for the first time. He is the rookie punter for the Miami Dolphins and Butch Johnson waits for the kick.
- 52:46The Cowboy 23. George Roberts will punt from the 20. Here's the snap and the return is on. A left footed kicker hangs it high. Nice kick.
- 52:54Which Johnson has it at the 22 and he fumbles the ball. It's going to be chased and picked up by the Dolphins at the seven yard line.
- 53:04I believe it was Charles Cornelius, the rookie cornerback down on Benny Barnes style punt coverage.
- 53:12And you could see it coming and Butch never had a prayer. There was no question about any yardage to be gained. It was Cornelius who made the hit.
- 53:22And Butch was hit so hard and Cornelius had such a great head of steam going that he jarred the ball loose. The Dolphins fell on it.
- 53:30And with just two forty left in the first half, Miami gets just a fabulous opportunity at the Dallas eight yard line.
- 53:39Here come the Dolphins with a 17 to three lead. Josh Jim Braxton is in the lineup with Delvin Williams.
- 53:47Josh is split behind Bob Greasy on first down goal. Jim Langer over the ball. Greasy has it, hands it off to Williams.
- 53:53He's nailed and buried by Ed Jones at the 12 yard line. Let's pause 15 seconds for station identification.
- 53:59This is the Dallas Cowboys Radio Network. The University of Arizona enters the Pac-10 here on KTAR Phoenix.
- 54:07Two 14 remaining.
- 54:21And the Dolphins are going to take their time and let it run down to the two minute warning and get the clock stopped at that spot.
- 54:27They've got a second down and go from the 11. That's where the ball has been spotted. We have two minutes exactly remaining in the first half of play.
- 54:34Time out on the field with our storm, Miami 17, the Cowboys three. Dallas Cowboys football continues after this word.
- 54:40When do you say Budweiser? Whenever the moment is right for a great beer. When do you say Budweiser? Whenever the good times are moving to right here. After the work is done why have you haven't fun? Anytime's the right time to say it. When do you say Budweiser? Bud will be a far any time at all.
- 55:08When do you say Budweiser? The smile on your face tells the world what you're thinking. Cause when you say Budweiser? The number one beer is what you be drinking. After the work is done why you still haven't fun? The king of beers is waiting for your call.
- 55:32When you say Budweiser? You said it all.
- 55:39Anheuser-Bosch St. Louis.
- 55:42Thank you for your attendance.
- 55:43Dolphins have a second down and goal from the Cowboy 11 yard line with a 17-3 lead and one thing's back to the happening to the Thursday night encounter against Minnesota. And it's been almost a carbon copy because then the Cowboys were down 14 and nothing had fought back. But Minnesota went in just before halftime and that was the country.
- 56:02I could be just thoroughly wrong as I am so frequently and we'll see here momently. But I just wouldn't be surprised if Breezy didn't throw again here in the last two minutes. Just keep it on the ground and if they get three points they still got a 20-3 lead.
- 56:16Well he's going to throw on first down. Goes across the middle deep. Incomplete for Harris at the 2.
- 56:21That's how much I know. I'm just going to show my pipe and shut up and take it burn. Third down 11. Thank you Brad. 156 to go. And we'll see if he's throwing on third down.
- 56:35Cliff Harris is back in the ball game. So it apparently was a pinched nerve and he's alright. Cowboys going to prevent defense. Jimmy Cephalo comes on now for Bulleisch as an extra wide receiver for the Dolphins. Third down and goal from the 11 yard line.
- 56:50I remember when they brought in all the little wide receivers and wing backs and then ran a drop. Yes.
- 56:55Here come the Dolphins with 156 remaining in the first half. Prevent defense for the Cowboys. One setback is Gary Davis. Bob Greasy looks to his left. Now looks straight ahead. Still doesn't have the snap.
- 57:06Offside Cowboys. Greasy's back. Looks. Fires. Has a man open in the end zone but the pass is low and incomplete. Cowboys I think are going to be called for offside.
- 57:16Which I'm sure Greasy had in mind with the long count. He threw it to Nat Moore who I don't think's caught a pass yet today. Unbelievably he hasn't.
- 57:26Offside Dallas against Ed Jones. A mark off five. It'll be third down and goal from the six. So the Dolphins will get an extra shot.
- 57:39And Gordon McCarter will step off the five yards which he begins to do right now. And then we'll reaffirm that it was Ed Jones who stepped offside. Here's Mr. McCarter.
- 57:51Offside number 72 defense. Repeat third down. Third down and goal after Jones offside. 151 remaining in the first half.
- 58:01Dolphins settle back to 15. They break. Dario Harris comes left. Jimmy Cepolo comes left.
- 58:09Millman to the right side and two setbacks. Nope. Now Nat Moore goes out wide to the right against Aaron Kyle.
- 58:15One setback behind Bob Greasy. Cowboys showing a blitz look.
- 58:19Greasy. Long count once again. Has it. The blitz is on. He's back to throw. Flips it deep in complete in the end zone.
- 58:26The blitz got to him. Charlie Waters was coming and so was Randy Hughes. He had to hurry the pass and your premion will come on.
- 58:32And I'll tell you what. If the Cowboys can come out of this situation yielding only three points they can consider it a job well done.
- 58:39Much better to be down 20 to three than 24-3. It doesn't take a great football mind from the Walter Camp School of Broadcasting to know that, right?
- 58:48Right.
- 58:50Where have I heard that from?
- 58:51Yeah, I know. I'm picking up your lines. I've been hanging around you. There are so few good ones. I've had it.
- 58:57Jero, your premion will try and tack on three and he'll kick it from the 13-yard line. A 23-yard field goal directly in front of the goal post.
- 59:06Here's the snap. A little high. Your premion kicks. Got it.
- 59:13And Charlie, there's a momentary break in the action so let's pause. For this you're listening to Dallas Cowboys football.
- 59:21Tony has had three consecutive non-productive games and we'll see if perhaps he gets a chance to run the ball.
- 59:30But the Cowboys are certainly not going to be running it here with 141 left.
- 59:34Your premion weighs. The Lewis Blackwell and Butch Johnson are deep.
- 59:40The Cowboys are now minus 10 in turnovers for the year. They came in minus eight. They've lost two today, both fumbles.
- 59:48Your premion's kick. Fairly short. Johnson at the seven, to the 10, to the 20, to the 25, to the 30, and down to the 33-yard line.
- 59:59So the Cowboys get it 67 yards away. Bruce Hardy from Arizona State made the tackle.
- 1:00:06One of only two high school athletes ever put on the cover of Sports Illustrated magazine.
- 1:00:11Bruce Hardy from Bingham City, Utah. You know who the other one was? No way. Say that again.
- 1:00:16One of only two high school athletes in team sports, let me see. Rick Mount. That's exactly right.
- 1:00:21Very good. I'm proud of you. I thought I had a good trivia question. It was Rick Mount. You're in the big leagues.
- 1:00:27Hey, Bruce Hardy played at Arizona State. Was a quarterback at one time. First down and 10.
- 1:00:34Shotgun formation for the Cowboys. The snapback, the three-man rush. Roger looks for the screen pass to Preston Pearson. Wide open to the 40, the 45.
- 1:00:42Cuts left and is in Miami country at the 48. We've got 125 remaining. Larry Gordon made the tackle. Doesn't he do that well?
- 1:00:50You know, we just keep saying it over and over, but he keeps doing it over and over. And you just got to think here, boy, 20 to 10 sure looks a lot different than 20 to 3, doesn't it?
- 1:00:59110 remaining in the first half. Cowboys go without the huddle. Again, the three-man rush. Stalbach comes to the right flat for Preston. Get out of bounds.
- 1:01:06Mr. Pearson, he does and kills the clock at the 44-yard line with 103 remaining. Doesn't he do that well also?
- 1:01:12You know, get out of bounds, that kind of thing. Before they can find a way to get down there. They've come from further back than 10 points before.
- 1:01:2063 seconds to go as I emulate the words of Tony Roberts. Echo, echo, yes. That's what I was doing on that game where I had the radio guy on my left here.
- 1:01:29I'd say first down 10, Montana State, and I'd hear him say first down 10, Montana State, and I think I haven't said that. And I'd go, yes, first down 10, Montana State.
- 1:01:38Drive you fatty. Cowboys in the shotgun on second down and six. John Fitzgerald over the ball. Looks like it may be a blitz by the Dolphins. They are sending four-man. Stalbach is back to throw, goes deep across the middle for Drew, and the pass is intercepted.
- 1:01:58There's a momentary break in the action for this pause. For this, you're listening to Dallas Cowboy Football.
- 1:02:03Here's the way you could help improve your car's mileage. The Motorcraft Tune-Up Kit in a Can. It's the one tested tough in Alaska.
- 1:02:12Each kit contains Motorcraft points and condenser, cam lube, and spark plugs, plus a feeler gauge and complete instructions.
- 1:02:20And there's a Motorcraft Tune-Up Kit for most of the standard ignition cars on the road. Look for the familiar Motorcraft race car on the package.
- 1:02:28Get the Tune-Up Kit in a Can at Motorcraft Suppliers throughout the Southwest.
- 1:02:34Cowboys' third turnover of the day halts what looked to be a good drive.
- 1:02:39Good interception by Foley. The strong safety. The ball overthrown for Drew Pearson by about a yard, but Foley and Drew had to make almost a standing dive.
- 1:02:51But still, Foley made a very good play, stepped in front of him, and was at the ball.
- 1:02:58And the Dolphins, you would guess, would just for the last 56 seconds maybe try to run it out, leading 20 to 3.
- 1:03:06Boy, Cowboys needed some points there, Vern.
- 1:03:08Yeah, even if they could have come out with just three more, it would have been beneficial because then they're only two touchdowns back with a half to play.
- 1:03:15But now they are 17 points down, and the white guys in the white uniforms have the football. That did not come out like I intended it to.
- 1:03:23And the blue guys do not have the football.
- 1:03:26Right.
- 1:03:27That's what he meant.
- 1:03:28First down, Dan Miami. They've got it huddled back to the 15.
- 1:03:31Yeah, I'm tempted to sing Don Meredith's song, but it may be a little premature for that.
- 1:03:38Yeah, let's not sing that yet.
- 1:03:40Dolphins at the line of scrimmage, Cowboys in the prevent defense have everybody way back.
- 1:03:45Hand off Delvin Williams, he comes left, knocked down at the 29-yard line.
- 1:03:49And Miami apparently will do as Brad suggested and will run out the clock. Harvey Martin made the tackle on that play.
- 1:03:55And the Cowboys have called timeout with 40. No, they haven't.
- 1:04:01The clock is still running with 39 seconds to go.
- 1:04:04And next week another playoff caliber team, quite perhaps, the Green Bay Packers at Plush County Stadium in Milwaukee.
- 1:04:15It was Plush in 1847 when it was constructed. 22 seconds to go in the first half.
- 1:04:21Three-man line for the Cowboys, Greasy hands it off to Delvin Williams again, knocked down at the 31-yard line.
- 1:04:26It'll be third down with 12 seconds to go, and that'll be the last play of the first half.
- 1:04:30Mike Hickman was in there and made the tackle.
- 1:04:33Five seconds to go, it's 20-3.
- 1:04:38Cowboys appear to be coming back in the second quarter, but they get only three points after a 10-minute drive.
- 1:04:46It's halftime with our score, Miami 20 and Dallas 3. Dallas Cowboys football continues in a moment.
- 1:04:52For the second half, the Dallas Cowboys getting ready to return, and as we get the second half underway, here with a play-by-play is Vern Lundquist.
- 1:05:03Thank you, Brad.
- 1:05:04Garro Eupremian will kick it.
- 1:05:06Cowboys need a touchdown drive early in the third quarter.
- 1:05:09Tom Landry's thesis that games are won and lost in the third quarter.
- 1:05:13We'll see. It's 20-3. Here's the kick.
- 1:05:15Butch Johnson at the 2.
- 1:05:17Up the near side at the 10, the 15, the 20, cuts back toward the center of the field, shakes the tackle, is knocked down at the 24.
- 1:05:24Cowboys take over first down 10 at the 24-yard line.
- 1:05:30And they're booing for some reason.
- 1:05:32I guess maybe because they didn't recover a fumble on that play.
- 1:05:37First down 10, Dallas takes over.
- 1:05:39They trail 20-3, and we are just underway as darkness has set here in Miami.
- 1:05:43We'll play the second half in the evening.
- 1:05:46Newhouse and Dorsett back in the offensive line.
- 1:05:48Dauphrie, Rayfield right, Tom Rafferty, John Fitzgerald, Herb Scott, and Pat Donovan up close.
- 1:05:53Tony Hill comes wide to the right side.
- 1:05:55Drew Pearson goes wide left.
- 1:05:57Dorsett shifts with a deep back in the eye at the Cowboy 24-yard line.
- 1:06:01The handoff goes to Dorsett.
- 1:06:02Tony pops into the secondary, picks up 5 out of the 29-yard line, run over left guard, the block on that side of Pat Donovan, Herb Scott, and Tom Rafferty, as Tim Foley makes the tackle.
- 1:06:12That's 20 yards on the day for Dorsett. I suppose if you're looking for good news, Delvin Williams has only 8 yards so far.
- 1:06:20But then Greasy has 159 passing.
- 1:06:24It's second down and 5. Cowboys at the 29.
- 1:06:27Drew comes wide to the right side against Norris Thomas, and Tony Hill breaks off to the left.
- 1:06:32Eye formation in the backfield, and the handoff goes to Newhouse straight up the center, gets 3.
- 1:06:37It'll be third down and 2 as Bob Baumhauer, the nose guard, made the tackle.
- 1:06:41That's plus 15 seconds for station identification. This is the Dallas Cowboy Radio Network.
- 1:06:46Follow Suns basketball throughout the 78-79 campaign here on KTAR Phoenix.
- 1:06:53Third and 2.
- 1:07:02Third down, 2 Cowboys back at the line at their own 32-and-a-half-yard line.
- 1:07:07Dupree is tight to the right side, just one tight end on this play. Stalbach with the count under John Fitzgerald.
- 1:07:13Motion on the left side from Herb Scott. The Cowboys will lose 5 yards.
- 1:07:22So Dallas will have much more difficult circumstances now. 2 flags are down.
- 1:07:27Illegal procedure against the Cowboys.
- 1:07:31Newhouse goes out, Tom Rafferty goes out, Dorsett comes back in with Preston Pearson in the offensive backfield.
- 1:07:38It'll be third down and 7 now for the Cowboys. And Gordon McCarter will reiterate what we told you.
- 1:07:43Illegal procedure, false start, number 68, third down.
- 1:07:48That was Herb Scott. It'll be third down and 7. The ball pushed back to the Cowboy at 27.
- 1:07:52Drew Pearson comes left. Cowboys will go from the spread. Tony Hill is off to the other side.
- 1:07:56Pearson to the right side, actually. And Preston Pearson in the wing to the right side.
- 1:08:01Splits looked by Bob Matheson. Here's the handoff on the power sweep to the right side.
- 1:08:05Tony Dorsett to the 30. Spins out of a tackle, has a first down up to 37-yard line.
- 1:08:10Blocking up front from Burton Lawless and Herb Scott on the full play.
- 1:08:13Charlie Fabb made the tackle that the Cowboys do convert the third down conversion.
- 1:08:18And they've got new life at their own 36-yard line.
- 1:08:22Nine-yard pick up for Dorsett. 13-14 to go third quarter.
- 1:08:26Cowboys need three touchdowns and they need to shut out Miami in the second half and they go home with a victory.
- 1:08:30It's that easy. Right?
- 1:08:33Ha ha.
- 1:08:35First and 10 at the 36. Regular set now. Dorsett shifts to the left side.
- 1:08:40Side by side with Newhouse. The handoff goes to Robert Newhouse.
- 1:08:43He's hit and driven down by Bob Baumhauer who is having a super afternoon.
- 1:08:48Number 73, second year pro from Alabama, 6'5", 258. That time Larry Gordon also helped on the tackle.
- 1:08:54But Baumhauer is winning the battle at the line of scrimmage.
- 1:09:00No gain in the last play. It'll be second down and dead.
- 1:09:04Burton Lawless brings the play in. Steve Toll comes to the bench for Miami.
- 1:09:09That's Miami defense, Vern Den Herder, Bob Baumhauer, A.J. Dewey, Kim Boeckamper, Rusty Chambers, Larry Gordon,
- 1:09:16and Bob Matheson is in there right now. It's a 3-4 Miami defense.
- 1:09:20Cowboys second down and 10 at their own 36. Roger will throw.
- 1:09:25Three-man rush. Delay flips now. Roger wants it all. Going deep for Tony Hill.
- 1:09:29Hill way downfield. Cut!
- 1:09:32A great catch by Tony Hill at the 11-yard line.
- 1:09:37It was reminiscent of the catch Putsch Johnson made in the Super Bowl last year.
- 1:09:41A tremendous diving catch with Tony Hill parallel to the ground, two feet up.
- 1:09:47He is certainly excited as well he might be. Ran a great pattern.
- 1:09:52And he got a couple of yards actually on the nearest defender. And Roger had plenty of time.
- 1:09:57Great protection and he just uncorked it, running that post into triple coverage almost.
- 1:10:02But the diving catch by Tony Hill, there's maybe, maybe to spark the Cowboys' need offensively.
- 1:10:09It looks so much like Putsch Johnson's catch in the Super Bowl.
- 1:10:13It's first down, 10 for the Cowboys at the Miami 11.
- 1:10:16Drew goes wide left. So does Tony Hill. Tony has his shirt tail out now.
- 1:10:21A big split behind Stabach and Preston Pearson is in the offensive backfield.
- 1:10:25Roger will throw. Drops back. Here comes the blitz. He is hit and dropped at the 22.
- 1:10:29Fumbles the ball but recovers.
- 1:10:33Fourth quarterback sacked today on Stabach.
- 1:10:37AJ Dewey got there this time. Third quarterback sacked.
- 1:10:42And those two guys really in the middle, Dewey and Baumhauer, rookies a year ago.
- 1:10:48And they have, as will happen, you know, in the first year a man gets to play a lot.
- 1:10:52Here they are in their second year of earn and they are really a crushing pair of defensive linemen.
- 1:10:59That was a loss of 11 back to the 22. It's second down and 21 for the Cowboys.
- 1:11:06Newhouse and Preston Pearson in the backfield. Regular formation for the Cowboys.
- 1:11:11They are in the eye now to shift. Preston comes to the right. Newhouse to the left.
- 1:11:14Stabach, drop play. Newhouse, pawn and drop. One yard thick up at the 21 yard line.
- 1:11:23Rusty Chambers and Mr. Newhouse getting introduced.
- 1:11:28It'll be third down and 20 at the 21.
- 1:11:31Dolphin defense isn't letting up in spite of the margin at this point.
- 1:11:36One-eight of three. Miami leads it with ten-17 to go third quarter.
- 1:11:40Cowboys with that sensational catch by Hill had new life, but again having trouble inside the 20s.
- 1:11:46They had a first and goal at the two in the first half and came up with only three points.
- 1:11:50Spread formation for the Cowboys. Drew Pearson goes left side. Tony Hill comes to the right.
- 1:11:55Dupree is off the line of scrimmage and Tony Dorsett and Preston Pearson to the setback.
- 1:11:59Stabach five yards back on third down 20. Low snap, picked up. He's up in the pocket.
- 1:12:04Looks left as the man open over the middle. Now pulls up, goes deep in the end zone.
- 1:12:08It is tipped away and complete. Hill was open. Norris Thomas saved the touchdown.
- 1:12:14For an amazingly long period of time, Billy Joe Dupree was wide open over the middle at about the ten or twelve yard line.
- 1:12:21And you kept thinking that Stabach was going to go there, but he waited and evacuated so long
- 1:12:27that a linebacker came over and picked Billy Joe up. Then Hill was open in the end zone
- 1:12:32and Roger with the throw and just give credit to Norris Thomas who made a tremendous diving touch of the ball
- 1:12:39and saved a sure touchdown. Septien on to try a 39 yard field goal.
- 1:12:44Hill kicks in the 29. Here's the snap, the kick on the way. Did he get it? Yes he did.
- 1:12:50Septien is two for two. There's a timeout on the field with our score.
- 1:12:54Miami 20 and the Cowboys 6. Dallas Cowboy football continues after this word.
- 1:12:59Cowboys run off five minutes and ten seconds on the drive, come up with three,
- 1:13:05but it's the second time they've been inside the 15 and had to settle for a field goal.
- 1:13:09And you've got to give a lot of credit to Norris Thomas for a great play to save the touchdown.
- 1:13:14Now it will be interesting to see what Mr. Greasy is able to do against the Cowboy defense.
- 1:13:20Dallas has shaved the lead to 14, it's 20 to 6. This is where we were after five minutes had gone by in the ballgame.
- 1:13:29Septien will kick, Dario Harris, Jimmy Cepolo and Gary Davis are deep.
- 1:13:34Here's the approach by Rafael Septien. Nice kick this time, Dario Harris has it at the three.
- 1:13:39Center of the field to the ten, to the 15, comes left in the 20, tries to get outside and does,
- 1:13:44he's in the 25, stiff arm and knocked out of bounds up the 32 yard line.
- 1:13:48Rafael Septien once again saved the punch with help of Dennis Thurman,
- 1:13:52but the Dolphins get a nice return and they've got the ball first down ten at their own 32.
- 1:13:57Offensive line, Bob Kuchenberg, Ed Newman, Jim Langer, Larry Little, Mike Currant, Andre Tillman.
- 1:14:04Dario Harris and Nat Moore are the wide receivers, the running backs are Leroy Harris and Delvin Williams,
- 1:14:09and the quarterback is Bob Greasy. 9.28 to go third quarter, it's 20 to 6.
- 1:14:15Cowboy defense getting ready, here comes Jim Langer who has been described by the Cowboys staff
- 1:14:19as one of the best centers in football, he and Tom Banks.
- 1:14:22He's over the ball, Tillman goes from the right side up tight to the left.
- 1:14:27Greasy has it, or does not have it yet, now he does.
- 1:14:30Pitch out to Delvin Williams, tries to get outside, circling around Ed Jones,
- 1:14:33is knocked down for a loss back to the 27 yard line by Mark Washington.
- 1:14:39There were three good defensive plays on that one,
- 1:14:42and Washington made the tackle for a loss back to the 27.
- 1:14:46In fact, Washington was so good, that may have been two of the three right there.
- 1:14:50But Ed Jones was the contain man who kept Delvin Williams from turning the corner,
- 1:14:55and then what a great job of knifing in under the coverage Washington did,
- 1:14:58knocked him off his feet, so the Dolphins are now looking at second and 13.
- 1:15:02It has almost gone unnoticed, but Delvin Williams has carried 11 times for three yards in this ball game.
- 1:15:09Here come the Dolphins with Gary Davis and Norm Boulash in the backfield now.
- 1:15:14Greasy will throw, back to pass up in the pocket, goes across the middle,
- 1:15:18that is almost intercepted by Dennis Thurman, it's incomplete.
- 1:15:21Threw behind his tight end Andre Tillman, and was racked up by Ed Jones.
- 1:15:25Greasy was as he let the ball go.
- 1:15:27Young rookie from Southern Cal is beginning to play with some authority.
- 1:15:31He started to show it a week or so ago, the Cowboys really need that,
- 1:15:34with the off and on injuries that Benny Barnes and Mark Washington have suffered.
- 1:15:38Thurman almost got his first NFL interception right there.
- 1:15:42One of the big things the Cowboys have been lacking this year is the big defensive play,
- 1:15:47the key turnover that will ignite them,
- 1:15:50and they could take no more opportune time than then or now for that kind of an opportunity.
- 1:15:55A 6-3 team against a 6-3 team, but Miami leads it 20-6, it's third down and 15.
- 1:16:02Prevent defense into the Cowboys, Greasy drops straight back, it's a four-man rush,
- 1:16:06he's up in the pocket going deep, way downfield.
- 1:16:09Harris is wide open and Greasy overthrows him by three yards.
- 1:16:12Duriel Harris had soundly whiffed Dennis Thurman at the Cowboy 30,
- 1:16:17and Greasy overthrew him by a bunch.
- 1:16:20That had six written all over it.
- 1:16:22Cowboys changed some of their defensive signals at the line,
- 1:16:25with a little bit of the Miami shifting,
- 1:16:27Charlie Waters was moving people around, and Roy Harris really was open.
- 1:16:32Fortunately, if you're a Cowboy fan, Greasy overthrew him.
- 1:16:35Here's George Roberts, here comes the rush, Roberts kicks it,
- 1:16:38it will be fair caught, Butch Johnson at the 30,
- 1:16:41and the Cowboys will take over at approximately the 31-yard line.
- 1:16:45Butch at the last minute had to slide over to his left to make the tackle and almost stumbled with it.
- 1:16:51There's a timeout on the field with our score, Miami 20 and the Cowboys 6.
- 1:16:54Dallas Cowboy football continues in a moment.

- 1:17:59Cowboys have it at their own 30, trailing by 14, 20 to 6.
- 1:18:03They took the opening kickoff of the second half and got a field goal out of it
- 1:18:06on a drive set up by a marvelous catch from Tony Hill.
- 1:18:11Hill goes to the left side against Curtis Johnson, and Drew Pearson comes wide right.
- 1:18:15Staubach for the day is 8 out of 12 for 101.
- 1:18:18One interception, he's been dropped three times.
- 1:18:20Long count, Roger has it, hands it off to Dorsett, goes left,
- 1:18:23drives the guard to the outside, flag is down as Tony picks up 3 to 34.
- 1:18:28Steve Cole and Rusty Chambers made the tackle, maybe a penalty against the Cowboys.
- 1:18:36Holding against Dallas.
- 1:18:40Didn't need that.
- 1:18:45So they'll mark off 10 against the Cowboys and push it back to the 20-yard line.
- 1:18:48It'll be first down and 20.
- 1:18:51And the flag was thrown on the right side of the offensive line of scrimmage,
- 1:18:55and we'll wait and see who it is officially.
- 1:18:58And here comes Gordon McCarter now to tell us.
- 1:19:02Holding, number 62 offense, repeat first down.
- 1:19:08Call is on John Fitzgerald, the center.
- 1:19:10It'll be first down and 20, Cowboys break the huddle and quickly come up.
- 1:19:13Miami is in the prevent defense.
- 1:19:16Three down linemen, they've got five men on the line of scrimmage,
- 1:19:18which may indicate a blitz.
- 1:19:20Nope, they're sending four.
- 1:19:21Here's Dorsett in the power sweep to the right.
- 1:19:23He's going to go back to the 30.
- 1:19:25Tony with a stiff arm out of the tackle and back to the 39-yard line.
- 1:19:28Dorsett picked up a bundle.
- 1:19:30He picked up 18 yards on that carry.
- 1:19:32It'll be second down and two as Rick Volk makes the tackle.
- 1:19:35There won't be any complaining about the blocking on that play.
- 1:19:38What a hole that was opened up.
- 1:19:41Through the right side, Burton Lawless with a key block.
- 1:19:44Rayfield Wright had Wright tackle,
- 1:19:46and Robert Newhouse helping out as he led on the sweep.
- 1:19:49He's got a back behind the block of Burton Lawless,
- 1:19:53and then he just nosed up almost to the first down.
- 1:19:56Dorsett is out of there limping a little bit as he went to the bench.
- 1:19:59Preston Pearson in, second down and two.
- 1:20:01The handoff to Newhouse.
- 1:20:02Robert's back's over, still up, and he's got the first down at the 41-yard line.
- 1:20:07There's a scramble for the ball down there in the melee and midfield,
- 1:20:12but the Cowboys have it, if indeed it was a fumble.
- 1:20:15They're down 10, so they overcome a first down and 20.
- 1:20:19And indeed, Brad, if they could go in and get a touchdown,
- 1:20:23we'd have an interesting ball game again at 20 to 13.
- 1:20:26They can leave a little bit of time left in the third quarter,
- 1:20:28and defense has got to play, but when you're a touchdown behind,
- 1:20:32you know you're really in the ball game.
- 1:20:34Miami has not done much at all since that first quarter when they tacked up 17 points.
- 1:20:39Their other three came after they recovered a fumble of the Cowboy 8.
- 1:20:43First down, 10 Dallas, backs are in the eye.
- 1:20:45Good shot, Preston Pearson, the reverse to Drew Pearson.
- 1:20:48He goes left, is almost caught behind the line, now he's in jail.
- 1:20:51Shaked up to the 30 and is caught for a loss back at the 37-yard line.
- 1:20:55They've been watching game films.
- 1:20:57Yeah, they sure have.
- 1:20:59Rusty Chambers was over there, Drew never had a chance.
- 1:21:02Larry Gordon also there.
- 1:21:05And it'll be a loss back to the 37-yard line, second down.
- 1:21:09Tom Rafferty brings the play in, Burton Lawless goes to the bench,
- 1:21:12Drew Pearson goes out, and that should mean Tony Dorsett is back in the lineup.
- 1:21:18They really had that thing diagnosed, and Gordon was in the vicinity,
- 1:21:22as Burns said, along with Chambers, and finally nailing Drew,
- 1:21:25and Drew did a heck of a job to get away from losing about 5 or 10 more yards.
- 1:21:29Second down and 15 at the Cowboy 37-yard line.
- 1:21:33Dorsett and Newhouse, now the setbacks.
- 1:21:36Drew Pearson wide right, Tony Hill wide left.
- 1:21:39Stobach straight back, five-man rush, Roger up in the pocket,
- 1:21:42in trouble, goes out, fires it, it is incomplete.
- 1:21:45He was hit as he let it go, and it was incomplete.
- 1:21:48Almost intercepted by A.J. Dewey.
- 1:21:51There's a flag down at the 47-yard line of the Cowboys in defensive secondary.
- 1:21:58That's got a chance to be, it is against Miami,
- 1:22:01and I think it's either going to be pass interference or certainly
- 1:22:05illegal use of hands, maybe defensive holding.
- 1:22:08That's a big break for the guys in blue.
- 1:22:10That is a big break for the guys in blue.
- 1:22:13So they will mark off the penalty.
- 1:22:15The ball is plotted at the 42, here's Gordon McCarter.
- 1:22:19Holding number 51 defense, automatic first time.
- 1:22:24Rusty Chambers, Cowboys, new life.
- 1:22:26They would have had a third down and 15.
- 1:22:29They've got a first down 10 at their own 42.
- 1:22:32We've got 5.47 to go third quarter.
- 1:22:3420 to 6, Cowboys trailing.
- 1:22:36They fell behind 14-0 in the first five and a half minutes.
- 1:22:39It was 17-0 at the end of the quarter.
- 1:22:43Then 17-3, finally 20 to 3 at the half.
- 1:22:47Doricetta Newhouse shifting in the backfield.
- 1:22:49Stabach under John Fitzgerald.
- 1:22:51Long count by Rogers, makes the draw play, goes back to pass.
- 1:22:54The free man rush, fires it out for Dufres.
- 1:22:56Billy Joe has another first down, breaking a tackle,
- 1:22:59and is out of bounds at the Miami 42-yard line.
- 1:23:02Nice pass by Roger Stabach to an open Billy Joe Dufres on the left side.
- 1:23:07Nice to also see the Cowboys being able, with a good pass,
- 1:23:10to take advantage of the three-man rush, because it means he's got the time.
- 1:23:14And nice also to see the Cowboys Public Relations Director, Mr. Doug Todd,
- 1:23:18who has come in to the booth because that is a sign that the thing is going to begin to turn around.
- 1:23:24Did in St. Louis at least, so we'll see.
- 1:23:27First down 10, Mr. Todd is with it.
- 1:23:31At the 42 of Miami, Cowboys down by 14-5-0-4 to go, third quarter.
- 1:23:36Drew Pearson out of the backfield in motion wide right.
- 1:23:39Roger hands it off the door set.
- 1:23:41Big pile up in the middle of the line, and he is caught for a gain of two by Larry Gordon, the linebacker.
- 1:23:47Nothing opened up up front that time.
- 1:23:49It'll be second down and eight, 4.47 remaining.
- 1:23:52We've had an outbreak of darkness in Miami.
- 1:23:56Yeah.
- 1:23:57We've got a night game all of a sudden.
- 1:23:59I feel like we've got Penn State and Oklahoma down in the field.
- 1:24:04Well, I'm tempted to say that one might be closer, but I won't.
- 1:24:10Second down and eight.
- 1:24:11Starbucks for the day, nine out of 13 for 122.
- 1:24:14Hill left side, Drew Pearson right side.
- 1:24:18Eye formation, now the shift.
- 1:24:20Door set goes back into the eye.
- 1:24:22Cowboy offensive line is set.
- 1:24:24The draw play is fake.
- 1:24:25The door is set.
- 1:24:26Roger's back to throw, looks deep across the middle.
- 1:24:28Down as he lets it go.
- 1:24:29It's caught by Tony Hill.
- 1:24:30Hill with a 20 to the 15, now to the 10, and runs out of bounds at the 11-yard line.
- 1:24:35There is a flag on the field.
- 1:24:42So we'll see.
- 1:24:43And the flag is upfield.
- 1:24:47Holding defensively against Miami will be declined by the Cowboys.
- 1:24:51It'll be a first down at the 11.
- 1:24:55When you see that flag up there in that region, you tend to think of defensive use of the
- 1:25:00hands they're talking once again to Rusty Chambers.
- 1:25:03And again, number 51 defense declined first down.
- 1:25:10Earlier in this quarter, the Cowboys had the ball first down at 10 at the 11.
- 1:25:14They had to settle for the field goal.
- 1:25:16In the second quarter, they had the ball first down and goal from the two.
- 1:25:19They had to settle for the field goal.
- 1:25:21They once again had it first down at 10 from the 11-yard line of the Miami Dolphins with
- 1:25:264-0-2 remaining third quarter, and they trailed by 14.
- 1:25:29Here come the Cowboys.
- 1:25:30Drew Pearson goes to the left.
- 1:25:31Tony Hill comes to the right.
- 1:25:33He'll be working on Norris Thomas, a big split behind Roger Staubach at the offensive line
- 1:25:37of scrimmage.
- 1:25:38Staubach hands it off to Newhouse.
- 1:25:40He comes right, breaks one tackle, picks up four yards down near the 7- or 6-yard line.
- 1:25:47Steve Toll with the tackle.
- 1:25:49Quick pop off the right side behind guard.
- 1:25:53And Newhouse got down to the 6.
- 1:25:58If indeed they can get in here, get the touchdown, not the field goal, we've got a brand new
- 1:26:04ballgame.
- 1:26:053.35 remaining third quarter.
- 1:26:09Drew Pearson goes left against Curtis Johnson, double-side and set.
- 1:26:12Jackie Smith is in the ballgame tight right.
- 1:26:15High formation behind Roger on second down and 6.
- 1:26:19Handoff, Dorsett caught behind the line, dropped.
- 1:26:21Got back to the line of scrimmage.
- 1:26:23It'll be third down at the 6.
- 1:26:25Kim Pulley made the tackle.
- 1:26:27Boy, the Cowboys have been just really struggling in close.
- 1:26:33Hard to figure out the say when the strong safety comes up on a play like that and gets
- 1:26:38in almost behind the line of scrimmage and makes the tackle.
- 1:26:41Somebody's not picking him up from somewhere.
- 1:26:44Tom Rafferty comes in.
- 1:26:46Cowboys just now huddling and they've got 15 seconds before they have to snap the football.
- 1:26:50There's all kinds of offensive confusion with players coming in and out.
- 1:26:54Ten seconds before the Cowboys will have to call timeout.
- 1:26:57They've got six seconds to get the playoff.
- 1:26:59They have four seconds to get the playoff and Roger Snobach calls timeout.
- 1:27:04There was so much confusion with players coming in and out and not knowing who was supposed
- 1:27:08to stay in the ballgame that the Cowboys have to use one of their three to talk things over.
- 1:27:13There's a timeout on the field with our score.
- 1:27:15The Dolphins 20 and the Cowboys 6.
- 1:27:17Dallas Cowboy football continues after this word.
- 1:27:20When it's summertime in the southwest, driving dusty back roads can be tough on your car's
- 1:27:25paintwork.
- 1:27:26And if it's tough on the paint, think what it does to your engine.
- 1:27:30We ran into similar conditions in Alaska testing motorcraft oil filters.
- 1:27:35Choking summer dust in 90-degree heat could have caused engine wear.
- 1:27:39So could sub-zero winter temperatures.
- 1:27:42In these conditions, 50 Ford GM and Chrysler cars and trucks were driven mile after mile.
- 1:27:48Filters were changed at recommended intervals.
- 1:27:51Throughout the whole grueling test, only one filter couldn't take it.
- 1:27:55The motorcraft filters consistently trapped moisture, dirt, and sludge to keep oil flowing
- 1:28:00to vital engine parts.
- 1:28:02If this is the kind of performance you are looking for, a motorcraft oil filter belongs
- 1:28:07in your car.
- 1:28:08Motorcraft, tested tough in Alaska.
- 1:28:11Motorcraft oil filters are available in your area.
- 1:28:15Ask for motorcraft at your local auto parts store.
- 1:28:19Tom Landry and Roger Stavok still over on the Cowboy sideline talking over the options
- 1:28:27on third down and five from the six yard line.
- 1:28:31Clark is killed with 237 to go in the third quarter.
- 1:28:36Roger is 10 out of 14 for 152 yards, has been intercepted once.
- 1:28:43Drew Pearson has caught one for 13, Hill two for 83.
- 1:28:47Preston Pearson two for 22 and Dupree four for 35, door set one for minus one.
- 1:28:53Now Roger back in the huddle.
- 1:28:55And we'll see what Tom Landry and the coaching staff up here in the press box have decided.
- 1:29:01On third down, third and five from the six.
- 1:29:06Tony Hill left side, Drew Pearson right side, Dupree is tight to the right.
- 1:29:11Regular set, Preston Pearson, Robert Newhouse with the setback.
- 1:29:15Stavok with a long count, draw play, Preston Pearson caught and dropped at the five yard line.
- 1:29:22Bob Matheson got it, it's fourth down.
- 1:29:25And Rafael Siftyan, who is five out of ten, will try and come in, or coming into the game,
- 1:29:32will come in and try and get the Cowboys his third field goal of the day.
- 1:29:38Roger Stavok walking off the field disgustedly.
- 1:29:42He was really upset with the way that that play did not unfold and
- 1:29:47I'll tell you, the Dolphins just did not go for the draw.
- 1:29:50Charlie Waters will hold, Dee Dee Lewis will snap it.
- 1:29:54Bruning is one of the up-backs in case there might be a fake, but I doubt it.
- 1:29:58Here's the snap, Siftyan's kick is up and he has got it.
- 1:30:02Rafael is three for three, there's a time out on the field with our score now.
- 1:30:05Miami 20 and the Cowboys nine.
- 1:30:07Dallas Cowboys football continues in a moment.
- 1:30:10This is radio.
- 1:30:12Another home run for the Bambino.
- 1:30:14He made it.
- 1:30:15Lucky Lindy as they call him.
- 1:30:17The Shadow Nose.
- 1:30:18Once a bulky wireless set in the living room, radio has changed to become his mobile,
- 1:30:23aware and curious as you are.
- 1:30:25One thing that radio always did in those early days was make you laugh.
- 1:30:29I meant a shrimp cocktail.
- 1:30:31No matter how small it is, I never did.
- 1:30:34In the 40s, when our boys were over there, radio kept us in touch over here.
- 1:30:39Big line! Big line!
- 1:30:42The only thing we have to fear is fear itself.
- 1:30:48This was their fighting power.
- 1:30:50In the last few years, things have been happening as quickly as the radio can bring them to you.
- 1:30:54Ask what you can do for your country.
- 1:30:57Fragility base here, the Eagle has landed.
- 1:31:00Thanks, problem-solver!
- 1:31:02The Viking has landed on Mars.
- 1:31:05Thanks for listening.
- 1:31:07We're radio.
- 1:31:08Listen to radio and hear the world.
- 1:31:12The Cowboys have dominated here in the third quarter just as they did in the second quarter,
- 1:31:17but they have been unable to come up with a touchdown.
- 1:31:20They have had to settle for three field goals.
- 1:31:22On three occasions they have been inside the 15, twice with first downs at the 11,
- 1:31:26once with the first down at the 2.
- 1:31:29But Septian has kicked three and it's an 11-point deficit.
- 1:31:32Here's Raphael to approach the ball.
- 1:31:34Kicks it short.
- 1:31:35It bounces at the 5.
- 1:31:36It's taken by Duriel Harris.
- 1:31:38He's back to the 15, the 20.
- 1:31:39Center of the field, comes left to the 30.
- 1:31:41Fetson falls at the 31.
- 1:31:43And Dennis Thurman squats on him just to make sure he stays down.
- 1:31:46And the crowd thinks there should be a rucking call there,
- 1:31:49but it's really just securing the tackle.
- 1:31:52Miami has not picked up a first down here.
- 1:31:54The contrast in the dominance of the two teams is that when the Dolphins were dominating in the first quarter,
- 1:32:00they got 17 points.
- 1:32:02The Cowboys have controlled the tempo of the game for the last two quarters,
- 1:32:05but they've been able to come up with only nine.
- 1:32:071.40 to go third quarter.
- 1:32:09Miami breaks the huddle and comes up.
- 1:32:11Bob Greasy picked up all 159 yards he has passing in the first quarter.
- 1:32:17He's got him at the line.
- 1:32:19First down, down at the 32.
- 1:32:21Greasy with a long count.
- 1:32:23Safety blitz is threatened.
- 1:32:24He'll throw.
- 1:32:25Blitz is coming.
- 1:32:26Greasy's back.
- 1:32:27Hits as he lets it fly.
- 1:32:28Flag is down.
- 1:32:29Pass is caught on the left side.
- 1:32:30One-on-one.
- 1:32:31Harris breaks free to the 50.
- 1:32:33Now it's a foot race.
- 1:32:34He gets a block.
- 1:32:35He's to the 30, the 20.
- 1:32:36He is going to score from the 10 to 5 touchdown.
- 1:32:39Now keep in mind there is a flag in the offensive backfield.
- 1:32:43Holding, Miami.
- 1:32:53Bring it back.
- 1:32:55At the point the reception was made, Dario Harris put a nice little move on Mark Washington to get free.
- 1:33:07And then he got a downfield block on Cliff Harris and then ensued the foot race.
- 1:33:14But the flag, you know, the crowd is reacting here as you would expect.
- 1:33:18But the flag was down.
- 1:33:19When you see a flag in that spot, I mean, you can take it to the bank that you're going to get a holding call.
- 1:33:24Here's the call from McCarter.
- 1:33:26Holding number 38 offense, first down.
- 1:33:31They caught Leroy Harris.
- 1:33:33Yeah, you're right.
- 1:33:35The flag was thrown well before greasy through the ball.
- 1:33:38Right.
- 1:33:39Absolutely.
- 1:33:42And I hear the public address announcer say that play went down the drain.
- 1:33:46Oh, it's next door.
- 1:33:48I thought it was loud enough to be the public address announcer.
- 1:33:51It's the pipeline to Augusta, Maine.
- 1:33:53Yes.
- 1:33:55OK.
- 1:33:57Somehow I don't like the accommodations here.
- 1:33:59It's first down in 20, Miami at the 21.
- 1:34:02Before you get spoiled at home.
- 1:34:05Andre Tillman goes tight to the right.
- 1:34:08High formation pitch out Delvin Williams.
- 1:34:10Cowboys breath a sweep.
- 1:34:11Williams is caught.
- 1:34:12Flag is down.
- 1:34:13He's caught and dropped.
- 1:34:14Now fumbled, but Miami has recovered.
- 1:34:17There is a marker down.
- 1:34:19Little jawing going on between Jones and Henderson and Andre Tillman.
- 1:34:24Personal foul, clipping against Miami.
- 1:34:27That'll be half the distance.
- 1:34:30And the Cowboys, I'm reasonably certain, will take it.
- 1:34:34They caught Williams for a loss back to the 2.
- 1:34:39But I think they'll take it.
- 1:34:42We'll see.
- 1:34:43They're discussing it now.
- 1:34:44It would be second down and about 22 if they take the play.
- 1:34:47Well, you'd think so because field position is so important.
- 1:34:50Yeah, exactly.
- 1:34:51They're going to.
- 1:34:52They'll take the play.
- 1:34:53And that'll put it back to the 10.
- 1:34:57Miami had a touchdown callback.
- 1:35:05Here's Gordon McCarter.
- 1:35:07Personal foul, clipping, number 67 offense.
- 1:35:12Repeat first down.
- 1:35:14It's against Bob Kuchenberg, and now the ball is back to the 10.
- 1:35:17Well, a Cowboy turnover here or a Miami turnover,
- 1:35:21a Cowboy takeaway would be opportune if you're a Dallas fan.
- 1:35:26First down and 30 from the 10.
- 1:35:29And they had a touchdown callback just a moment ago.
- 1:35:33Greasy has it back at the line.
- 1:35:35See if he stays conservative, which I expect he might do.
- 1:35:39Long count by Greasy, looking for the offside call.
- 1:35:42Draw play up the middle, picked up three yards.
- 1:35:45Delvin Williams up to the 13, and the crowd is booing
- 1:35:48because they thought there should have been an offside call
- 1:35:51against the Cowboys.
- 1:35:53Randy White made the initial defensive contact and,
- 1:35:56as a matter of fact, made a heck of a play because he reached in
- 1:35:59over a trailing blocker and got a hand on Williams
- 1:36:04and slowed him down in time for the linebackers to make the play.
- 1:36:09Second down and 27. Leroy Harris comes out.
- 1:36:12Norm Bullish is in there in his place.
- 1:36:15Greasy brings him up.
- 1:36:17Nath Moore comes to the left.
- 1:36:18D'Uriel Harris goes to the right against Mark Washington.
- 1:36:21Second down and 27 at the 13-yard line in Miami.
- 1:36:24Greasy will throw. Four-man rush.
- 1:36:26He's up in the pocket, going deep.
- 1:36:28Has D'Uriel Harris and Mark Washington down there.
- 1:36:30Flag is called on Mark Washington.
- 1:36:32Pass interference.
- 1:36:36Cowboys are complaining that it ought to be offensive interference,
- 1:36:39but it was pretty clear because the bump came,
- 1:36:42and obviously you've got the five-yard rule,
- 1:36:44and Mark Washington clearly put his hands on the receiver,
- 1:36:47bumped him away, and that will be pass interference
- 1:36:50and will bring the Dolphins into great shape once again.
- 1:36:55Well, that's exactly what you hope for in a situation like that.
- 1:36:58You're throwing it up for grabs just in case something might happen,
- 1:37:01and it did.
- 1:37:02So from a second down and 27,
- 1:37:06at their own 13, they've got a first down at the Cowboy 45.
- 1:37:11Jimmy Cephalo comes in.
- 1:37:13Nath Moore goes out for Miami at wide receiver.
- 1:37:16Dolphins get it.
- 1:37:17New life at the Cowboys, 45-yard line with 24 seconds to go in the third quarter.
- 1:37:22They lead it 20 to 9.
- 1:37:24Here come the Dolphins.
- 1:37:25Cephalo left side.
- 1:37:27Greasy with his backs in the eye.
- 1:37:31Bliss is threatened.
- 1:37:32Greasy has it.
- 1:37:33Bliss is coming.
- 1:37:34Right side.
- 1:37:35It's caught one-on-one.
- 1:37:37Harris is out there and is dragged down after a gain of three.
- 1:37:40Mark Washington made the tackle,
- 1:37:43and that should be the final play of the third quarter.
- 1:37:47And the Cowboys will wind up three-quarters trailing by 11.
- 1:37:52Five seconds to go.
- 1:37:53Now four, three, two, and one.
- 1:37:57That's the end of the quarter with our score.
- 1:37:59Miami 20 and the Cowboys 9.
- 1:38:01Dallas Cowboy football continues after this word.
- 1:38:0515 minutes to go.
- 1:38:07Cowboys dominating the last two periods.
- 1:38:10Miami has not done much at all once they got those two early breaks and went up 17-nothing.
- 1:38:15But the Cowboys have not been able to cash in with a TD.
- 1:38:19There are a couple of statistics that you look at coming into the game that really tell the difference between these two teams
- 1:38:24and part of the way the game has gone.
- 1:38:25We've told you one of them, which is the takeaways and giveaways.
- 1:38:28The Cowboys minus eight coming in, and they've lost two fumbles and an interception today.
- 1:38:33And the Dolphins with the best in the league at a plus-12 coming in.
- 1:38:36The other one in the penalty department, the Cowboys coming into the game have been penalized 59 times for 459 yards.
- 1:38:44Miami, by comparison, 38 times for 295.
- 1:38:48And those are significant differences in critical areas.
- 1:38:52Today, five penalties against the Cowboys for 66, seven against Miami for 52.
- 1:38:58But the biggest penalty so far, well, there have been two big ones, in all honesty, here in the last or current series.
- 1:39:04A holding call against Miami that rubbed out a touchdown to Durial Harris.
- 1:39:08And then the pass interference call against Mark Washington that gave Miami a first down at the 46 after they had had a second down at 27 at their own 13.
- 1:39:19The Dolphins have a second down and six now at the Cowboys 41.
- 1:39:25And Dallas does not need any more field goals in this football game.
- 1:39:29They need touchdowns.
- 1:39:31And defensively, they've come back to do a good job.
- 1:39:34As a matter of fact, Bob Greasy, since the second quarter in the last 30 minutes of football, has completed, I mean, has thrown for four yards.
- 1:39:41And we point out again that 10 of the 20 Dolphin points were set up on short yardage drives by Cowboy Fumblers.
- 1:39:47First, second down, and six at the Cowboy 41.
- 1:39:50Greasy has them back.
- 1:39:51Andre Tillman goes from right to left.
- 1:39:54Dee Dee Lewis up looking at him.
- 1:39:56Hand off up the middle, Delvin Williams.
- 1:39:58He gets a hole and squirts down close for a first down at the 36 yard line.
- 1:40:02There is a struggle for the ball as he may have fumbled it.
- 1:40:06And I think he did.
- 1:40:10Ed Newman recovered the ball.
- 1:40:12Let's see where they spot it now.
- 1:40:13No, they're going to move it back up and say it was no fumble.
- 1:40:16So it will be a third down and about one.
- 1:40:20And Larry Bethea comes in.
- 1:40:22Harvey Martin goes out to the Cowboys.
- 1:40:24He has played three full downs, but they're going to bring Bethea in on this third down and two.
- 1:40:29The ball to the Cowboy 37.
- 1:40:31Dolphins break and come up.
- 1:40:32Laird McCurry, the tight end, extra tight end is in there.
- 1:40:35It's 20 to 9 with 14-20 to go in the football game.
- 1:40:39Double tight end set.
- 1:40:40Greasy barks out the signals.
- 1:40:41Leroy Harris directly behind Bob Greasy.
- 1:40:44The hand off goal is play action.
- 1:40:45Greasy back to pass, rushes on.
- 1:40:47He's hit and dropped.
- 1:40:48Ed Jones with a big defensive play.
- 1:40:51Sacks Greasy.
- 1:40:52He just obliterated the blockers and got to Greasy before Bob could get set to throw it.
- 1:40:57I just, you know, had a flash as I watched the play set up say, no, he wouldn't throw here.
- 1:41:02He'll keep it conservative.
- 1:41:03And Ed Jones seemed to be blocked out of the play, but blew right by Wayne Moore the right tackle.
- 1:41:08And he was, what a tremendous defensive play by Ed Jones, who again seemingly was unblocked.
- 1:41:14And what a big play there.
- 1:41:15The Cowboys to hold him and now with a chance to climb back in.
- 1:41:18George Roberts will putt.
- 1:41:19Bush Johnson waits for it at the 10.
- 1:41:21Roberts is back at the 38 yard line and the Cowboys have eight men on the line of scrimmage.
- 1:41:26They are coming.
- 1:41:27Here comes the rush.
- 1:41:28Roberts gets the kick away.
- 1:41:30And it's a good one.
- 1:41:31It bounces at the 10, rolls to the 5, is picked up at the 5 and Johnson runs it out of bounds at the 10.
- 1:41:36He had to do that because it hit.
- 1:41:38Then is Thurman.
- 1:41:39And I'll tell you something, that's a very alert play by Bush because Thurman was trying to set up a block.
- 1:41:44The ball hit him in the back and it's a live ball at that point.
- 1:41:47There's a timeout on the field with our score.
- 1:41:49The Cowboys 9, Miami 20.
- 1:41:51Dallas Cowboys football continues in a moment.
- 1:41:54Hey, do you ever think what it's like to be a tree in a forest?
- 1:41:57Well let me tell you, as a tree, I don't get no respect.
- 1:42:00First come the lovers carving hearts and sweet nothings in your bark.
- 1:42:04Now people know that hurts.
- 1:42:05I mean just because love is painful for humans, does it got to be painful for trees too?
- 1:42:10Then there's the hikers tearing off our limbs for walking sticks.
- 1:42:13That's really no respect.
- 1:42:15Can you imagine if trees went for walks and tore off people's limbs?
- 1:42:18Then how about the campers with their fires?
- 1:42:20Cigarette smokers flipping their butts everywhere.
- 1:42:23Don't they care that trees burn easy?
- 1:42:25Why don't they drown their campfires?
- 1:42:27Forget smoking for a while.
- 1:42:28I'll tell you why.
- 1:42:29They got no respect for us trees.
- 1:42:31But we're tired of getting no respect.
- 1:42:33So the next time you come into a forest, you better be careful because us trees become chairs and tables.
- 1:42:39And we'll give you splinters for revenge.
- 1:42:41Hey, Dawg, get out of here, will you?
- 1:42:43A public service message on behalf of this station, the Ad Council, your state foresters, the Forest Service, Smokey Bear, and every living thing.
- 1:42:52And Rodney Dangerfield.
- 1:42:54Cowboys have it 90 yards away from the Miami goal line.
- 1:42:5913.38 remaining.
- 1:43:00They've got to have two touchdowns in order to go in front.
- 1:43:04Twenty to nine.
- 1:43:05And here come the folks.
- 1:43:07Tony Hill comes wide left.
- 1:43:08Drew Pearson breaks off wide right.
- 1:43:10Dorsett and Newhouse in the backfield.
- 1:43:14In the high formation with Tony the deep back.
- 1:43:16He's got 50 yards in the day.
- 1:43:17Starbuck will throw.
- 1:43:18Fires it out right side for Tony Hill.
- 1:43:20Hill is caught and hauled out of bounds at the 14-yard line.
- 1:43:24Picked up four on the play.
- 1:43:26Tony Hill with his third catch today.
- 1:43:28And it'll be second down and six.
- 1:43:31I wouldn't mind seeing them go into the two-minute offense.
- 1:43:34That's right.
- 1:43:35Zip, zip, zip.
- 1:43:37The clock shows 13.15 remaining in the ball game.
- 1:43:40And it's a factor.
- 1:43:41It really is a factor.
- 1:43:42Already it is.
- 1:43:43That's right.
- 1:43:44So we will keep you aware of how much time remains.
- 1:43:47Bush Johnson has come in.
- 1:43:48He goes, no.
- 1:43:50Yes.
- 1:43:51No, he's not.
- 1:43:52I thought he was in there.
- 1:43:53He's not.
- 1:43:54Dorsett and Newhouse.
- 1:43:55Newhouse stumbles as he tries to get set behind Starbuck.
- 1:43:58Now he's ready on second down six.
- 1:44:00Newhouse gets the handoff across the 15.
- 1:44:02Out there the 18.
- 1:44:03It'll be third down and two.
- 1:44:05As Rusty Chambers and A.J. Dewey collaborate for the tackle.
- 1:44:09Cowboys need to get just across the 19 for the first down.
- 1:44:12Timeout has been called by the official.
- 1:44:15And that's fairly close.
- 1:44:17I don't think he's got it, Vern, but it's pretty close.
- 1:44:19Yeah, it sure is.
- 1:44:20They're looking.
- 1:44:21I don't know whether they're going to measure or not.
- 1:44:22No, they're not.
- 1:44:23Third down.
- 1:44:24Third and one.
- 1:44:25Third and one for the Cowboys.
- 1:44:2612.40 to go in the game.
- 1:44:29Pearson is out.
- 1:44:31It'll be the power formation for Dallas on third down and one.
- 1:44:34Preston Pearson is in the ballgame along with Newhouse.
- 1:44:40But Johnson also in there at two tight ends.
- 1:44:44Third and one.
- 1:44:45Cowboys have not had success on short yard situations much today.
- 1:44:49Starbuck with a long count play action.
- 1:44:51He wants it all.
- 1:44:52He's going to fire.
- 1:44:53Can't find anybody open.
- 1:44:54Fumbles the ball.
- 1:44:55Recovers it at the 11 yard line.
- 1:44:58It'll be fourth down and Danny White will come on to fight.
- 1:45:03Well, sometimes you can tell when it ain't your day.
- 1:45:06Third and one and the second guessers will be waiting at the DFW late tonight around
- 1:45:13midnight to want to know why the Cowboys wanted to throw there.
- 1:45:16But obviously it was a try to catch the Dolphins off guard and not in the plan was for the
- 1:45:24ball to slip loose.
- 1:45:25Rodgers arguing with the official.
- 1:45:26I don't know what about maybe a late hit or something, but now he's going after Gordon
- 1:45:30McCarter, the referee.
- 1:45:31The sailor is upset and Starbuck has to hurry off before the snaps that any white can get
- 1:45:37the kick away.
- 1:45:38Jimmy Cephalo is waiting at the Dolphin 45.
- 1:45:42White is three yards back in the end zone.
- 1:45:45Miami should get great field position out of this.
- 1:45:47Here's the kick by White up and fairly short.
- 1:45:50Fair catch called by Cephalo.
- 1:45:51He's got it at the Cowboys 49 yard line.
- 1:45:54So Miami has tremendous field position with 11 52 to go in the game.
- 1:45:58There's a timeout on the field with our score still Miami 20 and the Cowboys nine Dallas
- 1:46:03Cowboys football continues after this word.
- 1:46:07Introducing a new way to take your pulse.
- 1:46:11Berlinetta, the sophisticated new Camaro from Chevrolet.
- 1:46:16You realize the careful attention paid to your personal comfort when you close Berlinetta's
- 1:46:21fine interior around you.
- 1:46:24Newly designed bucket seats support you comfortably.
- 1:46:28Special sound insulation surrounds you to help reduce wind, engine and road noise.
- 1:46:34The special Berlinetta suspension system gives you a subtle yet sensitive ride.
- 1:46:41Handling is responsive.
- 1:46:43Outside the Berlinetta sports a subtle pin swipe that accents the distinctly exciting
- 1:46:49Camaro shape.
- 1:46:50Berlinetta is elegant, it's comfortable and quieter than Camaro's past.
- 1:46:56It's a beautiful way to move body and soul.
- 1:47:00Camaro Berlinetta is a new way to take your pulse only from Chevrolet.
- 1:47:09Back to play with 11 52 to go in the game and the Dolphins perched on the Cowboys 49 yard
- 1:47:14line.
- 1:47:15Dallas does not have a takeaway in the game yet.
- 1:47:18They are down 3-0 in turnovers.
- 1:47:20They are minus 11 on the year in turnovers and the Dolphins are plus 15.
- 1:47:28First down 10 with a 20 to 9 score.
- 1:47:37Miami huddled back at the 40 yard line.
- 1:47:40This is like sitting in a sound chamber.
- 1:47:42You just get reverberations everywhere.
- 1:47:45I'm hearing more of Tony Roberts than I ever have in my life.
- 1:47:48It's first down 10.
- 1:47:50High formation behind Bob Greasy, Jim Langer over the ball.
- 1:47:53Cowboys threatening a blitz.
- 1:47:55Nat Moore starts in motion.
- 1:47:56The handoff goes to the fullback Leroy Harris.
- 1:47:58He breaks the tackle and picks up three yards down to the 46 yard line in Dallas.
- 1:48:03Cowboys with zero turnovers.
- 1:48:05A big, big factor.
- 1:48:07And you were counting up the yards the Dolphins had to go for 10 points.
- 1:48:10Oh, yeah, on two of the drives that Miami has had to go, you had a total, a total of 24 yards that Miami had to go to get 10 of their 20 points.
- 1:48:20And you know, same story as against Minnesota the other night.
- 1:48:23Second down and 7 Miami at the Cowboys 46.
- 1:48:26Nat Moore goes left side.
- 1:48:28Dario Harris comes wide to the right.
- 1:48:30Bob Greasy sends Andre Tillman in motion tight to the right side.
- 1:48:33He is now set.
- 1:48:34Greasy has it, drops back, rushes on.
- 1:48:37He's up in the pocket, flips it out and is caught.
- 1:48:39At the Cowboys 37, Delvin Williams has a first down at the 33.
- 1:48:45And Bob Brunig limps dejectedly back into the defensive huddle realizing that they caught somebody and quite possibly the young middle linebacker out of position on the coverage.
- 1:48:55And there go the, there go the chains, 10 yards downfield.
- 1:48:5910-49 to go in the game.
- 1:49:01Actually a field goal wouldn't hurt the Cowboys here except that they're losing a lot of time.
- 1:49:05They've got to have two touchdowns.
- 1:49:08Greasy calls for quiet as the Dolphins come up to the line of scrimmage.
- 1:49:14Long count by Bob Greasy.
- 1:49:18And he has it, handoff on the right side.
- 1:49:20It's Delvin Williams, triers at Leroy Harris.
- 1:49:23Leroy Harris down to the 32 yard line.
- 1:49:25Jethro Pugh made the stop.
- 1:49:27Second down and 7.
- 1:49:29There is such a feeling and there's a player injured.
- 1:49:32Mike Current is almost knocked out on his feet apparently and the referee saw that and quickly signaled officials time out.
- 1:49:39There's a momentary break in the action so let's pause.
- 1:49:41But this year listening to Dallas Cowboy football.
- 1:49:45Wayne Moore has replaced Mike Current and is in there at right offensive tackle now.
- 1:49:50It's second down, 7 Miami.
- 1:49:52We're under 10 minutes to go in the game.
- 1:49:549.57 and the clock going down.
- 1:49:57Greasy will throw.
- 1:49:58Looks to his left, pops it out to the left and it's caught.
- 1:50:02Tight end Andre Tillman, first down at the 21 yard line.
- 1:50:06That time they picked on Thomas Anderson.
- 1:50:08That is very much like the pass that Greasy threw to Tillman back in the first quarter to set up Upremian's first field goal.
- 1:50:16This one was quick out to the outside.
- 1:50:19That one was over the middle but the point is that he puts it right over the tight end shoulder.
- 1:50:24And it's got to be a precision pass because the linebacker is going to be on him pretty much step for step.
- 1:50:30And it was just a perfectly thrown ball.
- 1:50:32First down, 10 at the Cowboy, 21.
- 1:50:35Greasy back at the line. Tillman comes tight to the right.
- 1:50:38High formation Harris and Delvin Williams in the offensive backfield.
- 1:50:41The handoff goes to Leroy Harris, comes right.
- 1:50:43Carrying the ball out in the open is dumped and spilled at the 19 yard line by Dee Dee Lewis.
- 1:50:48Delvin Williams for the day has carried 12 times for 7 yards.
- 1:50:52Well you know the Cowboys in turn, you've watched them years enough to know this,
- 1:50:56they have a history of stopping the great backs on big games.
- 1:51:00And if you want recent proof you just look back to Payton last year in the playoff game
- 1:51:04and Wilbur Montgomery was leading the league a couple of weeks ago when the Cowboys played the Eagles and they shut Williams down.
- 1:51:10But again the other extenuating circumstances today meant that the Dolphins haven't really needed Williams.
- 1:51:169-11 to go in the game and the clock running it.
- 1:51:18Second down and 9 at the Cowboy, 20.
- 1:51:21Tillman goes tight to the left side.
- 1:51:23Charlie Waters follows him over there.
- 1:51:25Cowboys shifting defensively.
- 1:51:27A big split and Greasy will throw.
- 1:51:28Drops back, blitz is on up in the pocket.
- 1:51:30Scrambles out to his right.
- 1:51:32Being chased at the 30 and is caught and dropped at the 29 yard line by Ed Tutal Jones.
- 1:51:37The clock will continue to run though and it's under 9 minutes.
- 1:51:42It'll be third down for the Dolphins at the Cowboy, 29.
- 1:51:45They're going to need a bunch.
- 1:51:46The prevent defense comes in now.
- 1:51:48The other two are going to be used, Larry Cole and Dennis Thurman.
- 1:51:52Ed Jones having a fine day for the Cowboys.
- 1:51:56And now the clock has stopped until officials say they get set again.
- 1:52:00They do when the clock starts, 8.49 and counting.
- 1:52:03It's third down and 17 at the Cowboy, 29 yard line.
- 1:52:06Almost would have been better for Dallas if he had gotten out of bounds.
- 1:52:09Absolutely.
- 1:52:10Tillman comes out limping.
- 1:52:12He has been replaced by Laird McQuarrie.
- 1:52:16No, he has not. He's been replaced by Jimmy Cepolo.
- 1:52:18Three wide receivers in.
- 1:52:20Cepolo goes wide left.
- 1:52:21Nat Moore is wide left.
- 1:52:22And Dario Harris is wide right.
- 1:52:24It's third and 17 at the Cowboy, 29.
- 1:52:26Twenty to nine, Dolphins lead.
- 1:52:29Up and down set.
- 1:52:31Draw play up the middle.
- 1:52:33Delvin Williams up to the 14 yard line.
- 1:52:36He will not have enough for the first down.
- 1:52:40But he will be in range for Garo Yopremian.
- 1:52:42And there is an injured Cowboy back up at the 33.
- 1:52:45That is as alert as you have ever been to know when I'm going to call.
- 1:52:48Thank you, Brett.
- 1:52:50The Cowboys have a man down.
- 1:52:52I'm not sure it's...
- 1:52:54Well, we don't know yet.
- 1:52:56At the 33 yard line.
- 1:52:58It will be fourth down and Yopremian will come on.
- 1:53:02There is a player down and a timeout on the field.
- 1:53:04With our score Miami 20 and the Cowboys nine,
- 1:53:06Dallas Cowboy football continues after this word.
- 1:53:10Thomas Henderson is the injured Cowboy player.
- 1:53:13Thomas Henderson, Thomas Henderson.
- 1:53:15I keep thinking I'm hearing myself.
- 1:53:17It's just Mary Hartman, Mary Hartman.
- 1:53:19And he is walking off the field with some assistance.
- 1:53:22Yopremian is on to try the field goal.
- 1:53:24It will come from about the 23 yard line.
- 1:53:28Last week the Dolphins scored on a fake field goal.
- 1:53:30We were discussing that possibility during the timeout.
- 1:53:34Doubtful they would try it, but it would be a big play for them if they got the touchdown here.
- 1:53:38Field goal is meaningless.
- 1:53:39Yeah, the interesting thing about it last week,
- 1:53:41Yopremian was mad because he said he was open.
- 1:53:43Yopremian will kick it from the 23 yard line.
- 1:53:46A 33 yard effort from the right hash mark.
- 1:53:50Long count by Strach.
- 1:53:53Here's the snap.
- 1:53:54The kick is on the way.
- 1:53:56And he got it.
- 1:53:58There's a momentary break in the action.
- 1:54:00So let's pause.
- 1:54:01For this you're listening to Dallas Cowboy football.
- 1:54:04Seven minutes and 42 seconds to go in the ball game, which means quite obviously the Cowboys have got to score quick
- 1:54:11and then get the ball back one more time.
- 1:54:13They needed 14 points before the field goal.
- 1:54:16They still need 14.
- 1:54:18And if they could get 14 it would be 24-23.
- 1:54:20But you're talking about things that don't appear to be probable.
- 1:54:24Because Dallas has really had problems once again.
- 1:54:27And they're going to have to get back to the field.
- 1:54:29They don't appear to be probable because Dallas has really had problems once again inside the Miami 20 today.
- 1:54:36Recap for you if you joined us late.
- 1:54:38Miami marched in for a touchdown on the opening possession.
- 1:54:41They recovered a Tony doorstep, fumbled at the 16 and got another touchdown to take a 14-0 edge.
- 1:54:50The Cowboys came back to make it 17-3.
- 1:54:53Yopremian 45 yard field goal made it 17-0.
- 1:54:56Yopremian from 30 yards out 17-3.
- 1:54:59A fumbled punt at the 8 and Yopremian kicked another of his 20-3 at the half.
- 1:55:03And Septien has two field goals here in the third quarter.
- 1:55:06And Yopremian won.
- 1:55:08So field goal fanatics throughout the world are thrilled with what's going on here.
- 1:55:12Here's Yopremian's kick.
- 1:55:14He scoots it on the ground, taken by David Stahls.
- 1:55:18And Stahls is written down on the right side.
- 1:55:20He fumbles but goes back to pick it up at the 36 yard line.
- 1:55:23Or Burton Lullis recovered the fumble.
- 1:55:28Cowboys get it at the 36.
- 1:55:30I don't know whether Yopremian is deliberately shoving that ball on the ground.
- 1:55:34I'm not sure.
- 1:55:36But the Cowboys get pretty good field position at the 36 yard line.
- 1:55:397.35 remaining.
- 1:55:42They've got to get 7 and they've got to get them quickly.
- 1:55:48Here comes Dallas.
- 1:55:49Drew Pearson comes wide left.
- 1:55:50He has caught one pass for 13 yards.
- 1:55:53Tony Hill is wide right.
- 1:55:55I step in the offensive backfield.
- 1:55:57Stavok will throw, drops back, looks for a screen pass to Dorsett.
- 1:56:01Tony almost caught from behind, breaks the tackle.
- 1:56:03He's to the 50 yard line.
- 1:56:04He's to the 45 and knocked down at the 41 yard line.
- 1:56:09A little quick screen to Dorsett and he used that great speed to break through potential tacklers.
- 1:56:14The Cowboys have a first down with 7.16 remaining in the game at the Miami 41 yard line.
- 1:56:20The hole is open and they weren't going to be there long, but when you have speed and explosion like Dorsett,
- 1:56:25supposedly you don't need them and he ran right through them and was finally slowed up and tripped short of the 40 yard line.
- 1:56:33That's a step in the right direction.
- 1:56:35Under seven minutes to go in the game.
- 1:56:36Tony Hill goes wide right.
- 1:56:38Drew Pearson comes wide left.
- 1:56:41I said again, the up and down by the offensive line and Stavok will throw again.
- 1:56:44Four man rush by Miami.
- 1:56:46He goes deep in the left corner.
- 1:56:47Drew Pearson is down there open and it's overthrown.
- 1:56:50Pearson was open in the end zone and Stavok let him three yards too much.
- 1:56:57I'm also not sure that Drew judged the ball quite right.
- 1:57:02You're talking about a very fine timing thing, but Drew started his dive what looked like four or five yards early,
- 1:57:08but still that's such a minuscule timing thing down there that he was unquestionably over led with the pass.
- 1:57:15Stavok and Greasy are almost even on stats for the day.
- 1:57:18Imagine that from when they started out.
- 1:57:20Greasy had 159 yards at one point in the game and Stavok had three.
- 1:57:24And now Roger has 179 yards passing on 12 out of 17.
- 1:57:29Greasy 12 out of 18 for 185.
- 1:57:31It's second down 10 at the Miami 41 yard line Cowboys come back trailing by 13 points 23-9.
- 1:57:38Drew Pearson left side, Tony Hill right side, Dorsett and Newhouse in the eye formation behind Stavok.
- 1:57:43Draw play is fake.
- 1:57:45Stavok's back to fast up in the pocket, rolls out to his right, rolls up, lets it fly.
- 1:57:49He's got Tony Hill open.
- 1:57:50Hill goes right, almost loses the first down, tries to get out of bounds and does it to 30.
- 1:57:55He lost three yards coming backwards but he picked up the first down and kills the clock with 629 to go.
- 1:58:02First down at the Miami 30.
- 1:58:10That is Hill's fifth catch today.
- 1:58:13It's first down for the Cowboys on the 12 yard pick up.
- 1:58:16They trail 23-9 with 629 to go.
- 1:58:21Hill goes right, Pearson comes left.
- 1:58:24First down 10, Miami 30.
- 1:58:28Wide split behind Stavok with Dorsett and Newhouse.
- 1:58:32The blitz is not on.
- 1:58:34Rodgers back to throw across the middle has Dupree at the 22.
- 1:58:37Billy Joe has driven back and then dumps but they'll give him forward contact or forward progress to the 21 yard line.
- 1:58:44He'll be very close.
- 1:58:46Rusty Chambers made the stop but we're down to 610 and counting on the clock now.
- 1:58:53Dallas has got to get it in.
- 1:58:55Then they've got to go for the onside kick or else hold Miami with no first downs.
- 1:59:00So the options, I mean the tasks are formidable.
- 1:59:04It's second down and one at the 21.
- 1:59:06Here come the Cowboys.
- 1:59:07Pearson and Hill both go to the right side this time.
- 1:59:11Stavok under John Fitzgerald.
- 1:59:13Up and down set off into the line.
- 1:59:15Rodgers shifting again as Newhouse to the left side.
- 1:59:19He will throw, drops back, a three man rush.
- 1:59:21Looks for the screen, fires it out for Dorsett to the 20, the 15.
- 1:59:24He's to the 10 and knocks down at the 8 yard line.
- 1:59:27First and goal Dallas at the 8 yard line.
- 1:59:29Rick Volk made the tackle and here is where the Cowboys have been three times previously.
- 1:59:34And here is where they have fallen short.
- 1:59:37524 to go in the game.
- 1:59:39And I don't know how you explain the fact that their short yardage, you can't really call it goal line offense because,
- 1:59:47but I guess maybe anything inside the 15 is goal line.
- 1:59:49Anyway, it hasn't been productive, but they've got a shot at it again.
- 1:59:53Here come the Cowboys.
- 1:59:54Drew Pearson goes wide right.
- 1:59:55Tony Hill comes wide left.
- 1:59:57It's first and goal at the 8.
- 1:59:59Stavok looks into the eyes of the Miami secondary.
- 2:00:02Has it and will throw.
- 2:00:03Four man rush.
- 2:00:04He fires deep in the end zone.
- 2:00:06It's dropped by Billy Joe Dupree.
- 2:00:07May have been tipped by Rusty Chambers one yard deep.
- 2:00:13That stops the clock with 4.53 to go.
- 2:00:15It's second down and eight.
- 2:00:17Second and goal.
- 2:00:21Stavok now is 15 of 21 for 212.
- 2:00:26One interception.
- 2:00:27No touchdown passes.
- 2:00:28Cowboys do not have a touchdown today.
- 2:00:31Second and goal from the 8.
- 2:00:32Well, actually it's more like the nine yard line.
- 2:00:34And those the football is just across the nine.
- 2:00:39Pearson goes left.
- 2:00:40Hill goes, or rather goes right.
- 2:00:42And so does Tony Hill.
- 2:00:44Up and down set again.
- 2:00:45Stavok.
- 2:00:47Fitzgerald long count.
- 2:00:48Roger now has it.
- 2:00:49Makes the draw.
- 2:00:50Goes rolls out to his right.
- 2:00:52Up at the line is Grimmage.
- 2:00:53Call it touchdown.
- 2:00:54Billy Joe Dupree.
- 2:01:00Stavok has fired his 17th touchdown pass of 1978.
- 2:01:05The Cowboys are alive at 23.15 with 4.42 showing on the clock.
- 2:01:14That is Dupree's sixth touchdown catch.
- 2:01:19Step the end.
- 2:01:20We'll try and make it 23.716.
- 2:01:26Tom Rafferty will center.
- 2:01:28Here's the center.
- 2:01:29And the kick is up.
- 2:01:30And it is through.
- 2:01:33There's a timeout on the field with 4.44 remaining in our score now.
- 2:01:37Miami 23, the Cowboys 16.
- 2:01:39Dallas Cowboys football continues after this word.
- 2:01:43Have you wondered what it took to coach UCLA to seven straight national championships?
- 2:01:48I'm coach John Wooden.
- 2:01:49And it took teams like the one Ned Walker just put together for ASU and some luck.
- 2:01:54Seven lettermen returning plus five new players picked up in ASU's best recruiting year ever.
- 2:01:59It's the kind of team coaches sometimes dream about.
- 2:02:02ASU basketball running ahead of the pack.
- 2:02:05For season tickets call 965-2381.
- 2:02:08ASU just might give the other coaches in the pack ten a few nightmares.

- 2:02:20Being involved with the Phoenix Suns, the Roadrunners, University of Arizona football, and the Phoenix Rackets.
- 2:02:27Staying abreast of the latest developments in the sports world is important to you.
- 2:02:31And by being involved with the people in the headlines, Dave is able to accomplish the main objective.
- 2:02:36To keep you better informed.
- 2:02:38Listen to Dave Tenell on sports each morning here on KTAR.
- 2:02:43Cowboys have their first touchdown of the day.
- 2:02:48They get it on a nine yard pass from Stavok to Billy Joe DuBrie.
- 2:02:52Septian will kick off and with 444 remaining I rather doubt that he'll go for the onside kick.
- 2:02:57Though Miami is certainly looking for it.
- 2:03:00D'Oreal Harris is waiting at the 15.
- 2:03:03Here comes Septian.
- 2:03:05He does try the onside kick. No he doesn't. He goes deep. That was a tee that was going nine yards.
- 2:03:10Here's D'Oreal Harris at the left side and will be caught and spun out of bounds at the 21 yard line.
- 2:03:18That tee flew about ten yards and I thought that was the football. There's a flag down on the play.
- 2:03:27And the Cowboys have the option apparently maybe offside Miami.
- 2:03:33And that kill ten seconds is 434 remaining.
- 2:03:38Here is Gordon McCarter preliminary indication. Personal foul against Miami.
- 2:03:47And that will, should be half the distance call.
- 2:03:52It should be half the distance call. We'll see.
- 2:03:56The flag is up at the 41 yard line and Harris was run out of bounds at the 21.
- 2:04:04And the Cowboys are wanting to know whether they ought to kick it again.
- 2:04:10Dee Dee Lewis is out there looking over at Ernie Stutner. Here's the call.
- 2:04:13Personal foul, unnecessary roughness, number 21, kicking team, decline, first foul.
- 2:04:24So it is declined by the Cowboys because it would have meant kicking the ball over and the Dolphins have it at the 21.
- 2:04:31So Rick Volk is called for the foul.
- 2:04:38The Dolphins get it back with 434 remaining and they've got it at the 21 yard line.
- 2:04:43Here comes Miami. No turnovers for the Cowboys today.
- 2:04:47Bob Greasy at the line. Andre Tillman comes tight to the right side.
- 2:04:52Leroy Harris is in there. The pitch out Delvin Williams comes right, cuts back and is up to the 22.
- 2:04:57He picked up one yard. Clock will continue rolling with 426 to go in the game.
- 2:05:03Williams for the day has now carried 15 times for 22 yards, 16 times.
- 2:05:08He picked up one, it's second down and nine. Norm Boulash comes in.
- 2:05:12Greasy is 12 out of 18, has not been intercepted. None of the running backs have fumbled.
- 2:05:184.08 to go in the game. Clock unraveling. Leroy Harris is out, Boulash is in.
- 2:05:23Miami taking a long time in the huddle. Now they break. It's 23 to 16.
- 2:05:29Greasy up. High formation. Tillman goes to the left side.
- 2:05:33It's quick in the backfield now and Greasy has five seconds to call the snap he will throw.
- 2:05:38He's back, up in the pocket. He's going to be caught and dropped by Ed Johnson to 16 yard line.
- 2:05:44Let's pause 15 seconds for station identification. This is the Dallas Cowboys Radio Network.
- 2:05:50Wildcat football in the Pac-10 here on KTAR Phoenix.
- 2:06:07It will be third down and 16 as Ed Jones gets his third sack of the day.
- 2:06:11We have 3.33 remaining in the game. Miami is one out of four on third down conversions.
- 2:06:17Gives you an idea of how few they've had to use. The Cowboys are five out of eight.
- 2:06:21Greasy 12 out of 18 for 185, has him at the line on third down 16.
- 2:06:26Critical, critical play in the game. With 3.14 remaining. The handoff up the middle to Gary Davis.
- 2:06:32He is caught and dropped at the 19. It will be a punting situation.
- 2:06:35So Greasy elected to stay very conservative. There are three minutes and six seconds remaining
- 2:06:39and the Cowboys will get it back.
- 2:06:43Now under three minutes and the clock running. It's fourth down and 11.
- 2:06:48The Cowboys will get one more shot. They've got to have the touchdown and the extra point.
- 2:06:53If they get it, they can win it 24-23. 2.48 remaining.
- 2:06:58And George Roberts is back at the five yard line. Cowboys apparently going for the return.
- 2:07:05Now we've got 2.38 remaining in the game. Butch Johnson waiting at the Cowboy 40 yard line.
- 2:07:10And the Dolphins taking an awful long time to snap the ball. Here's the snap to Roberts.
- 2:07:15No rush. He kicks it up fairly short. Johnson, it bounces and takes the Cowboy roll backwards
- 2:07:21and will be recovered at the 46 yard line of the Miami Dolphins and the Cowboys have a shot.
- 2:07:27It took a Dallas bounce backwards to the 47 yard line. Dallas gets it 47 yards away.
- 2:07:33Two minutes and 20 seconds on the clock and they trail by six points.
- 2:07:38Or seven points.
- 2:07:41I just now realize that. I've been talking about 24-23.
- 2:07:46It's going to be 23-23. Where have I been and why didn't anybody tell me I've been doing that?
- 2:07:52We've got to hope for overtime, don't we?
- 2:07:56Boy, I know. I don't know. I can't explain it. I don't know what I was thinking about.
- 2:08:01Here come the Cowboys, 23-16 with 2-20 to go. They are at the 46. That's where it's been marked.
- 2:08:08Stobach looks straight ahead, makes the draw play, back to pass, looks right, has a man open,
- 2:08:13Dufrey at the 32 and the Cowboys have a first down but Dufrey fumbles the ball.
- 2:08:18Miami has recovered. They come to the right side. At the 30 yard line it's Norris Thomas,
- 2:08:22the game cornerback, door set, holding out about the 40.
- 2:08:39There is confusion and now they say the fumble stands. Dufrey has fumbled with a first down at the 32 yard line.
- 2:08:47Miami first down. The fourth Cowboy turnover of the day. Dufrey had a first down at the 31.
- 2:09:10Fumbled the ball when tackled. Norris Thomas picked it up. Dolphins get the ball back at the 40 with 2-03 remaining.
- 2:09:24Here come the Dolphins at the 40 yard line. So the opportunity apparently will go by the wayside
- 2:09:29and the Dolphins will try and run out the clock. Hand off. Leroy Harris knocked down at the 42.
- 2:09:351.59 to go. That will be the two minute warning. There is a time out on the field with two minutes to go
- 2:09:42and our score, the Dolphins 23, the Cowboys 16. The Cowboys had a marvelous opportunity with a first down at the 32
- 2:09:48but Dufrey fumbled. We tried to look at the Magnavox monitor over here to the left to see if indeed it was a fumble
- 2:09:54and quite frankly could not tell. There was obvious thought on the Cowboy bench that it should have been ruled
- 2:10:01no fumble, that the tackle had been made. Billy Joe walking in agony over on the sideline, just pacing back and forth.
- 2:10:07Cannot believe it. It's second down, 8 Miami. Gracie has him back at the line of scrimmage. Jim Langer is over the ball.
- 2:10:17Bob Gracie. Thought will not start until the snap. Here's the hand off. It goes to Delvin Williams. He gets four.
- 2:10:25There's a fumble, a scramble for the football and I think Miami has recovered at the 47. They have indeed.
- 2:10:31It'll be third down and two. Time out for the Cowboys with 1.48 remaining. Williams fumbled but the Cowboys couldn't get to it.
- 2:10:3923, 16 with 1.48 remaining. And the Cowboys have one time out left. It'll be third down and three Miami.
- 2:10:49And that marvelous field position that Dallas enjoyed will go by the wayside even if they can hold the Dolphins.
- 2:10:57Delvin Williams will come out of the game limping a little bit. For the day 16 carries to 27 yards.
- 2:11:04And he's hurting as he walks to the bench. Cowboys with one time out to go.
- 2:11:12They fell behind 17-0 in the first quarter. It was 23 at the half. It's 23, 16 now.
- 2:11:23Gary Davis and Jim Braxton are the new running backs. Gracie has talked it over with Don Schula.
- 2:11:31Now decides to go back for one more little bit of conversation. On third down and three with 1.48 to go.
- 2:11:41The remaining Dolphins backs the line of scrimmage on third down and three.
- 2:11:45Braxton and Gary Davis in the offensive backfield behind Bob Greasy.
- 2:11:50Bliss is threatened by the Cowboys. The handoff up close to Gary Davis cut down short of the first down at the 49 yard line.
- 2:11:56It'll be a punting situation for the Dolphins. The clock shows 1.40 remaining.
- 2:12:01And the Cowboys have not used their final time out. It'll be fourth down and now the officials call time out to spot the ball.
- 2:12:09They kill the clock with 1.34 to go. Now they start the clock again.
- 2:12:15And the Cowboys will send their punt return unit on. 1.26 to go. Perhaps I miscounted and they used all three.
- 2:12:23I thought they had one left. 1.20 to go. 15 seconds before the Dolphins have to punt.
- 2:12:30And they're going to probably let the clock expire and run down. They've got eight seconds in which to punt it.
- 2:12:36And they're going to take the full 30 and that'll kill the clock with about 1.02 to go in the game.
- 2:12:42There's the delay of game call right now with 1.02 remaining. They'll mark off five yards against Miami.
- 2:12:48And the punt will come from the, or the ball will be spotted back at the 44 yard line.
- 2:12:531.02 to go. Cowboys had a first down at the 47 with 2.20 to go. Here's the call.
- 2:13:01Delay of game. Offense. Still fourth down. So George Roberts will punt.
- 2:13:09Cowboys, to my knowledge, have not blocked the punt this year. Blocked the, I don't think they have.
- 2:13:15And I don't know whether they'll come at it this time or not. Roberts is back at the 29.
- 2:13:20Butch Johnson waits for it at the 15 of the Cowboys with 1.02 to go.
- 2:13:27Dallas has everybody spread out. They are not in tight and it looks like they are coming.
- 2:13:32Long delay. And here's the snap and here comes the rush and Roberts gets the kick away.
- 2:13:38Nice high deep kick. Fair catch called. Butch Johnson has it at the 16 yard line.
- 2:13:43So the Cowboys have it 84 yards away and 54 seconds to get there.
- 2:13:5639 yard punt by George Roberts. Fair cut by Butch Johnson at the 16.
- 2:14:0154 seconds remaining in the game. 23-16. Dolphins lead.
- 2:14:07The Cowboys have been the dominant force for the final three quarters.
- 2:14:11But that 17-0 lead in the first quarter, just too much to overcome.
- 2:14:16Dallas will go from the spread obviously. Drew Pearson comes left.
- 2:14:19Tony Hill goes right. Preston Pearson and Dorsett in the backfield.
- 2:14:24Tony Stubbock is five yards back. A three man rush for Miami.
- 2:14:27They've got to prevent defense in. Everybody is deep.
- 2:14:30The snap back to Stubbock. He goes once. Now flips the pass out and he's just dropped by Dorsett.
- 2:14:36That used up six seconds. 48 seconds remaining in the game.
- 2:14:40And quite frankly, had Tony caught the ball, I don't think he was going very far.
- 2:14:45But the option of course is to get him into the open.
- 2:14:48We're using those great moves and that speed and hope he can get up field and out of bounds to kill the clock.
- 2:14:53Second down, 10. Cowboys trailing by seven.
- 2:15:0223-16 our score. 48 seconds to go.
- 2:15:07Drew Pearson comes left. Tony Hill goes right.
- 2:15:11Dupree is off the line to the left side.
- 2:15:14Spread formation once again.
- 2:15:17Roger back in the pocket. Three man rush. He now steps up in the pocket.
- 2:15:21Goes deep left side. Overthrows Drew Pearson to the Miami bench.
- 2:15:24It'll be third and tenth.
- 2:15:3041 seconds to go.
- 2:15:40And if Miami wins this, we may hear some kind of roar here in the Orange Bowl.
- 2:15:47I'm told. 41 seconds remaining. 23-16. Dallas with the third down, 10.
- 2:15:53At the 17, 16 yard line.
- 2:15:56Throw their down to their final two plays unless they can get the first down on this next one.
- 2:16:00Or the fourth down play. Hill comes left.
- 2:16:04Drew Pearson goes right. Cowboys in danger of falling to six and four for the year.
- 2:16:09Fitzgerald over the ball. Roger Staubach hands on his knees.
- 2:16:12Now takes the snap and drops back. The three man rush again.
- 2:16:15Roger takes it all day. Now runs out of the pocket. Fires it up. It's caught.
- 2:16:19Drop by Dupree. Billy Joe had it in his hands and dropped it for the first down in sight at the 31 yard line.
- 2:16:27It'll be fourth down. He had the first down at the 32.
- 2:16:33Coverage by Rick Volk, but Volk didn't have to do anything.
- 2:16:36It's fourth down and 10. Rafferty brings the play in.
- 2:16:41Thirty-three seconds to go. So Staubach has been unsuccessful on three straight plays,
- 2:16:46but two of them have been drops and one an overthrow. He's 17 to 26 for 236.
- 2:17:00And on what could be the final offensive play for Dallas, they break the huddle and come up.
- 2:17:05Shotgun formation, fourth and 10. They've got to have the 27 yard line.
- 2:17:12Long count by Staubach and the snap. The three man rush again.
- 2:17:15Roger is back up in the pocket. Drills the fit. Caught by Preston Pearson at the 35 to 40.
- 2:17:20He is to the 45 and is down at the 50 yard line. First down Dan Dallas with 22 seconds remaining.
- 2:17:26Dallas is out of timeout. They will go for the shotgun formation.
- 2:17:31On the right side, Drew Pearson left. Low snap for Staubach. He picks it up and drops back.
- 2:17:35Flag is down as Roger pulls up and lets it fly on the right side. Caught by Dupree and he's out of bounds.
- 2:17:40There is a flag down. Billy Joe has a first down at the 39, but hold on.
- 2:17:47Let's check the infraction. Offside, Miami.
- 2:17:52The Cowboys will decline the call and take the first down at the 39.
- 2:17:5614 seconds to go. And they will decline the offside call and take the first down at the 39 yard line.
- 2:18:04Here it is. Offside, number 50 on the defense. Declined. First down.
- 2:18:12That's Larry Gordon, the linebacker who was offside for the Dolphins.
- 2:18:15The Cowboys have another first down at the 39 yard line. Staubach now with 281 yards on 19 of 28.
- 2:18:22Roger has had a tremendous day. He's got one touchdown. The Cowboys have only 14 seconds remaining now.
- 2:18:28They've got the ball at the 39 yard line. Could it possibly be Hale-Murray time again?
- 2:18:33Drew is wide left. Tony Hill wide right. Staubach, five yards stiff.
- 2:18:38Here's the snap. A good one. The four man rush by the Dolphins. Roger's up in the pocket.
- 2:18:42Caught, pulls up, lets it go right side and it's incomplete out of bounds.
- 2:18:47He fired for Dupree. Four man rush by Miami. We have six seconds to go. The Cowboys have time for one play.
- 2:18:54Possibly, possibly two. Six seconds remaining.
- 2:19:04And we'll try it again.
- 2:19:08In 1976, in the Super Bowl here, Dallas was in about this same position on the field.
- 2:19:15And Roger went deep in the right corner of the end zone for a young man named Percy Howard.
- 2:19:19The ball was tipped incomplete. There were those who thought interference should have been called. It was not.
- 2:19:24We've got almost similar circumstances now as Dallas comes up to the line of scrimmage for what could be the final play of the regular game.
- 2:19:31John Fitzgerald looks back at Roger. Six seconds remaining and the folks are at the line.
- 2:19:36Drew Pearson wide left. Tony Hill wide right. A three man run.
- 2:19:40Can't find anybody open. Scrambles out now. Fires deep into the end zone. It is intercepted.
- 2:19:51Picked off at the three yard line. The clock has expired.
- 2:19:56The game is over. Tony Hill was open in the end zone. The pass was a little bit under throwing.
- 2:20:03The Dolphins win it. Now this is Vern Lundquist along with Brad Sham and our producer Gary Brandt
- 2:20:08saying thanks for joining us and stay tuned for the post game show.
- 2:20:12Again our final score the Cowboys 16 Miami 23. This is the Dallas Cowboys radio network.
- 2:20:20Good afternoon once again everybody. Vern Lundquist back in the Cowboy broadcast booth at the Orange Bowl in Miami Florida
- 2:20:25where Dallas has fallen for the fourth time this year. And it was a situation very similar to the game against Minnesota.
- 2:20:31They've now lost two in a row as they go from 6-2 to 6-4 falling behind 17-0 in the first quarter
- 2:20:38and eventually losing it by a score of 23-16. In that first quarter Miami took the opening kickoff
- 2:20:44and immediately marched down field. They began at their own 27 yard line.
- 2:20:48Greasy hit a pass on the left side to Duriel Harris and then on a second down and seven from the 37
- 2:20:53he found Delvin Williams who ran 48 yards. And here's Greasy to throw. No blitz by the Cowboys.
- 2:20:59Greasy comes in the right flat caught by Delvin Williams. Shakes it back to the 50. To the 40, to the 30.
- 2:21:05Now being chased by Waters at the 20 and caught from behind at the 11 yard line.
- 2:21:09Ultimately they had a first and goal at the one as Duriel Harris caught a pass for 10 yards.
- 2:21:14On second down and goal former TCU great Norm Boulash got the first touchdown of the game.
- 2:21:19Again the double tight end set this time a regular set behind Bob Greasy.
- 2:21:23Greasy has it. Hand off Boulash. Touchdown Miami. Left guard six points.
- 2:21:28Extra point good Miami took an early seven nothing lead.
- 2:21:31Tony Dorsett on his first play from scrimmage this afternoon fumbled at the Cowboys 15 yard line on a second down and 12.
- 2:21:38That was the second game in which he has done that on his first carry.
- 2:21:42Last week it was a 38 against Minnesota. Bob Baumhauer recovered and the Dolphins had to only go 15 yards
- 2:21:49for their second touchdown of the game. It came on a third down and goal from the Cowboy one.
- 2:21:54Up front Harvey Martin, Randy White, Chesro, Pugh and Ed Jones. Here comes Miami.
- 2:21:58They have a seven nothing lead and a third and goal from the one foot line.
- 2:22:02Again the slot to the right side. Boulash directly behind Bob Greasy. Williams to the left.
- 2:22:07Greasy has begun the count as it hands it off to Delvin Williams.
- 2:22:11Drives and scores to the right guard. It's 13 nothing Miami.
- 2:22:14Extra point by Yopremian was good and with barely five and a half minutes gone in the game
- 2:22:19the Cowboys were down 14 nothing. They couldn't move once more.
- 2:22:23And still did not have their first first down. Had to punt. Miami took over at their own seven yard line.
- 2:22:28But they immediately started right down the field.
- 2:22:31The key play in the drive was a second down and 20 from the Dolphin 36.
- 2:22:35Greasy will throw. Blitz is coming. He's going deep across the middle.
- 2:22:39Tillman's out there all by himself. Has the ball and the Cowboy 31.
- 2:22:43Johnny Waters let him go. Tillman with a huge gain.
- 2:22:46It was a gain of 33 in a first down at the Cowboy 31 yard line.
- 2:22:50Ultimately the Dolphins had to settle for a 45 yard field goal from Garo Yopremian.
- 2:22:55They got it. And at the end of the first quarter Dallas Trailed by a score of 17 nothing.
- 2:23:00They took over with 14 seconds remaining in the first quarter.
- 2:23:03And put together a march that consumed 10 minutes and seven seconds.
- 2:23:07But all they got out of it was three. The key play was a third down and two at the Miami 15.
- 2:23:13Preston Pearson in the backfield of Waiset Dorsett.
- 2:23:17Roger Staubach in the cockpit has it. Draw play Preston Pearson comes right to the 10 to the 5.
- 2:23:23Driving first and goal. Dallas hits a three.
- 2:23:26They had that first down and goal but Newhouse was stopped for no gain.
- 2:23:29Then he lost two. And on third down and goal Staubach was sacked for a loss of eight by A.J. Dewey.
- 2:23:36So Raphael Septienne came on and kicked a field goal of 30 yards to narrow the count to 17 to three.
- 2:23:42But the Cowboys then held Miami and Miami had to punt and Butch Johnson fumbled for the Cowboys at the 8 yard line.
- 2:23:51George Roberts will punt from the 20. Here's the snap and the return is on.
- 2:23:54A left footed kicker hangs it high. Nice kick.
- 2:23:57Butch Johnson has it at the 22 and he fumbles the ball.
- 2:24:00It's going to be chased and picked up by the Dolphins at the 7 yard line.
- 2:24:05They couldn't score but the turnover did result in another Yopremian field goal this time from 23 yards out.
- 2:24:11That made it 20 to three and that's where it was at halftime.
- 2:24:15Cowboys down 20 to three at the end of the first half.
- 2:24:19They received the kick and vitally important that they established control of the game.
- 2:24:23They did control much of the second quarter despite the fact they got only the three points.
- 2:24:27And they did do just that. They took over at their own 24 yard line following the kickoff return.
- 2:24:32And moved to the Cowboy 36 where on second down and 10 Roger Staubach hit Tony Hill with a 53 yard pass.
- 2:24:39Roger will throw. Three man rush. Delay flicks now. Roger wants it all going deep for Tony Hill.
- 2:24:44Hill way down field. Cut!
- 2:24:47A great catch by Tony Hill at the 11 yard line.
- 2:24:52It was reminiscent of the catch Butch Johnson made in the Super Bowl last year.
- 2:24:56A tremendous diving catch with Tony Hill parallel to the ground two feet up.
- 2:25:03However, once again the Cowboys down inside the 15 could not get into the touchdown.
- 2:25:08On the first down play Staubach was sacked for a loss of 11 by AJ Dewey.
- 2:25:12That pretty well set the tone.
- 2:25:14And then on the third down play from the 20 Staubach's pass for a wide open Tony Hill in the end zone
- 2:25:19was knocked away by Norris Thomas to hold the Cowboys out of the end zone.
- 2:25:24So Septienne came on to kick his second field goal. This from 39 yards out.
- 2:25:28And that cut the lead to 20 to six.
- 2:25:30Cowboys held Miami and got the ball back with 820 to go in the third quarter.
- 2:25:34And seems to be moving for the touchdown again.
- 2:25:38From Miami 41 it was Tony Hill with the key play on that drive.
- 2:25:42Hill left side, Drew Pearson right side.
- 2:25:45High formation, now the shift. Dorsett goes back into the eye.
- 2:25:49Cowboy offensive line is set. The draw play is fake to Dorsett.
- 2:25:52Rogers back to throw, looks deep across the middle.
- 2:25:54Flag is down as he lets it go. It's caught by Tony Hill.
- 2:25:57Hill in the 20 to the 15. Now to the 10.
- 2:26:00And runs out of bounds at the 11 yard line.
- 2:26:02The flag was against Miami for holding.
- 2:26:04It was declined by the Cowboys, a gain of 30 for Tony Hill.
- 2:26:07On two catches he had picked up 83 yards in the third quarter.
- 2:26:11And Miami, the Cowboys had a first down at the 11.
- 2:26:14But once again could not go. Newhouse picked up five at right.
- 2:26:18Dorsett no gain on second down and five.
- 2:26:20They tried to draw play on third down and five from the six for a gain of only one.
- 2:26:24So Septienne came on and kicked it.
- 2:26:26And that cut the margin to 20 to nine.
- 2:26:29That was the score at the end of the third quarter of play.
- 2:26:31Miami took over with 11.52 remaining in the fourth quarter at the Cowboys 49 yard line.
- 2:26:38Following a front by Jimmy, or a fair catch by Jimmy Sepulow.
- 2:26:42And they moved down to another Garrow, your premium field goal.
- 2:26:44Key play on third down and 17 at the Cowboys 28.
- 2:26:48Delvin Williams got them close enough to kick it.
- 2:26:51Up and down set.
- 2:26:53Draw play up the middle. Delvin Williams up to the 14 yard line.
- 2:26:58He will not have enough for the first down.
- 2:27:02But he will be in range for Garrow, your premium.
- 2:27:04And there is an injured Cowboy back up at the 33.
- 2:27:07That is as alert as you have ever been to know when I'm going to call.
- 2:27:10Thank you, Brad.
- 2:27:11And Brad picked up the play by play.
- 2:27:13Delvin Williams did get caught short.
- 2:27:16But your premium kicked it through from 33 yards to make the final, or rather the score at that time.
- 2:27:2123-9 Miami out on top.
- 2:27:23Cowboys got it back with 7.35 to go in the game.
- 2:27:26They took over following the kickoff at their own 36 yard line.
- 2:27:30On first down, Roger Staubach hit Tony Dorstead on a screen pass.
- 2:27:33Tony Hill is wide right.
- 2:27:35Eyes set in the offensive backfield.
- 2:27:37Staubach will throw.
- 2:27:38Drops back.
- 2:27:39Looks for a screen pass to Dorstead.
- 2:27:41Tony almost caught from behind.
- 2:27:42Breaks the tackle.
- 2:27:43He's to the 50 yard line.
- 2:27:44He's to the 45 and knocked down at the 41 yard line.
- 2:27:47First down 10.
- 2:27:48Pass intended for Drew Pearson overthrown.
- 2:27:51And Staubach picked up Tony Hill for 11 at a first down.
- 2:27:55Then at the 30 yard line, another pass, and finally he hit Dorstead on a screen play.
- 2:28:03Up and down set off, empty line.
- 2:28:05Rogers shifting again.
- 2:28:06Has Newhouse to the left side.
- 2:28:09He will throw.
- 2:28:10Drops back.
- 2:28:11A three man rush.
- 2:28:12Looks for the screen.
- 2:28:13Fires it out for Dorstead to the 20, the 15.
- 2:28:14He's to the 10 and knocked down at the 8 yard line.
- 2:28:17And on second down from the 8 yard line, Roger Staubach, scrambling to his right, got the
- 2:28:22Cowboys on the board for the first time today in the touchdown area.
- 2:28:26Up and down set again.
- 2:28:29Staubach, Fitzgerald, long count.
- 2:28:31Roger now has it.
- 2:28:32Fakes the draw.
- 2:28:33Goes, rolls out to his right.
- 2:28:34Up at the line of scrimmage.
- 2:28:35Caught at touchdown, Billy Joe Dupree.
- 2:28:39Extra point was good to cut the margin to 23-16, and that's when my addition went south.
- 2:28:44And I began to think the Cowboys could score and kick an extra point and take the lead
- 2:28:4824-23.
- 2:28:49That doesn't work in this league, folks.
- 2:28:51At any rate, the Cowboys did get a good opportunity.
- 2:28:54They got it back with 2-20 remaining at the 47 yard line of the Miami Dolphins following
- 2:28:58a very short punt by George Roberts.
- 2:29:00The Cowboys went to Dupree, but misfortune hit again.
- 2:29:04Here come the Cowboys, 23-16 with 2-20 to go.
- 2:29:08They are at the 46.
- 2:29:10That's where it's been marked.
- 2:29:12Staubach looks straight ahead.
- 2:29:14Fakes the draw play.
- 2:29:15Back to pass.
- 2:29:16Looks right.
- 2:29:17Has the man open.
- 2:29:18Dupree at the 32.
- 2:29:19The Cowboys have a first down, but Dupree fumbles the ball.
- 2:29:21Miami has recovered.
- 2:29:22They come to the right side.
- 2:29:24At the 30 yard line, it's Norris Thomas, the game cornerback, to our set hold.
- 2:29:27He's not about to 40.
- 2:29:29So that really hurt the Cowboys because they would have been at the 32 with plenty of time,
- 2:29:34over 2 minutes remaining, and 2 of their timeouts remaining.
- 2:29:37But they had to use timeouts.
- 2:29:38They did hold Miami, took over at their own 16 yard line with a minute to go, and one
- 2:29:44timeout left.
- 2:29:45On a fourth down, 10 play, Roger Staubach did manage to hit Preston Pearson.
- 2:29:49Long count by Staubach and the snap.
- 2:29:53The three man rush again.
- 2:29:54Roger is back up in the pocket.
- 2:29:56Drills the fifth.
- 2:29:57Caught by Preston Pearson at the 35 to 40.
- 2:29:59He is to the 45 and is down at the 50 yard line.
- 2:30:01First down, Dan Dallas.
- 2:30:03Dallas got to the 39 yard line.
- 2:30:05They were out of timeouts, and with 6 seconds remaining, Roger had no choice but to go deep
- 2:30:09into the end zone, and it didn't work.
- 2:30:11Drew Pearson wide left.
- 2:30:13Tony Hill wide right.
- 2:30:14A three man rush.
- 2:30:15Staubach can't find anybody open.
- 2:30:17Scrambles out now.
- 2:30:18Fires deep into the end zone.
- 2:30:20It is intercepted.
- 2:30:24I think there was a little dejection there.
- 2:30:27I'm not sure.
- 2:30:29At any rate, the attempted comeback falls short by 7 points, and the Cowboys lose it
- 2:30:35by a score of 23-16.
