- 0:51Well, today's episode is brought to you by the financial support of our
- 0:55listeners. Thanks so much for all of your support. And now it's tom
- 1:00for us to get into today's episode. This one is the Adventure of the
- 1:04Violent Virtuoso, The Adventures of Frank Race, starring Tom Collin. The war
- 1:21changed many things, the base of the earth and the people on it.
- 1:25Before the war, Frank Race worked as an attorney, but he traded his
- 1:29law books for the Cloak and Dagger of the Oss And when it was over,
- 1:33his former life was over too. Adventure had become his business, the
- 1:38Adventures of Frank Race. And now we joined Frank Race for the Adventure of
- 1:57the Violent Virtuoso. It was one of those evenings where sooner or later you
- 2:05know you're going to end up on the fire escape. You've been hot all
- 2:08day and it's still hot, and the weather man had just informed the city
- 2:12by radio that there'd be more of the same tomorrow. Unfortunately, when the
- 2:15weather man forecast heat, you know was right. So I was reclining,
- 2:21trying to divert myself with the fire Star final when Mark Donovan came in with
- 2:23a proposition, what do you say we go out and do the town.
- 2:28I'll go away. You just had a shower and it's gone to your head.
- 2:30No, no, no, I mean I mean, look, let's
- 2:31go out and get ourselves a couple of warm hearted females. Mark. I
- 2:36regret having to break it to you, but at this moment anything that can
- 2:38be described as warm seems utterly this taste, because I mean, I don't
- 2:42forget all about the weather. Look you go, I have one of two
- 2:45phone calls. I'm winning for them, answered the door, winning. I
- 2:47just site the kind of night. Kept it up all the way to the
- 2:52door, and I felt the argument to be resumed as soon as he came
- 2:54back, but it was wrong. Reappeared wearing a grin that was almost a
- 2:59leerd. Yeah, oh, I see you why you wanted to stay home.
- 3:04I also see why you wanted to get rid of me. What are
- 3:07you talking about? It's the name the one you're expected brother of anything that's
- 3:12cool in this town tonight. It is her, but she ain't going to
- 3:16help your temperature. And you're trying to tell me there's a woman out there.
- 3:20There is, brother, and she would make you take a long dragon
- 3:23that cigarette this morning. It was right and I didn't. It was tall
- 3:30and slim, blonde, horizon mouth had a gold chase yourself look with just
- 3:36money and lots of it. I'm still gone, mister Lath, I'm a
- 3:40vinter Continental underwrite. It's is that he called your dat? Yes? He
- 3:44cool mentioned something about a stolen ring. He said it wouldn't be contacting me
- 3:49until tomorrow. I got rest, go mine. You know, I don't
- 3:53mind, but I figure I finished the last of mind coming over here?
- 3:59What would you like? Wow, take the time you're smoking now. I'll
- 4:02take a drink too. If you have the ingredient. We have the ingredient.
- 4:05And Mark ten bar William, what's your preference is? Heaven's surprised you
- 4:11get that? Mark? I did great surprises coming up waken. You say
- 4:17that much about the ring? Did you lose it? It was stolen from
- 4:20me? Like, hey, seventy five hundred for you but I don't want
- 4:26to collect the insurance on it. I want the ring that How about the
- 4:29police. I'm not gonna have the policing on it yet. You see,
- 4:33it was stolen from me by a friend that makes a lovely pickture. Let
- 4:38you take the case, charmers Laken said you would. I guess so that
- 4:43is? Who's the friend? Whoever? You have? An actress by the
- 4:47name of kil Courson. Yes, I've heard that matter. I know him.
- 4:51You're not trying to say the kid, of course, I'm not trying
- 4:55to say it. Race, I am swaying. And the second thought,
- 5:00I don't think i'd do you any good on this case. You've already taken
- 5:02the case, Race, I wouldn't like it if you turn me down.
- 5:06Here you, sir, two tall ones guarantee to cool your temperatures down to
- 5:12zero. In fact, they might even implove you. Thank you, Race.
- 5:19Yes, you will take the case, don't you? Yes? So
- 5:27okay, before we get through, you might not like me. Carol Corson
- 5:38could be seen at the Majestic, where she was doing a well received skitting
- 5:41a popular review. He was an old friend and a good reason Carol and
- 5:46I had once got around for several weeks, thinking of little else with each
- 5:48other, the majestic. I found her in her dressing room, raise dulling,
- 5:54talk about ghost out of the past. Still the same color hair,
- 5:57still the same figure you're wearing. Well, baby, you think you know
- 6:00I never quite got over you. I've heard different now about Ernie Jeddo.
- 6:05Now I understand, as Lord, when you can't blame me for Landry Race,
- 6:09you might even make me forget you. Oh when he plays that violin.
- 6:14I'm not blaming you, baby, but Ernie Jeddo could be bad news
- 6:16doing a thing. Don't say it. Race, Just the thought scares me,
- 6:19silly. Oh look, lover, I've got to go on all right,
- 6:21but I must talk to you. And soon you're being accused of Thibram
- 6:26being what you know, simbil Thon. Sure I went to abroad the place
- 6:30last night. When symbol has lost a ring with seventy five hundred dollars,
- 6:32you've been tabbed as number one, suspecting was insured within the Continental So I'm
- 6:36the case. Race. This is silly, I'm sure it is. Baby.
- 6:42Oh listen, lover, I do have to skip. I'll get in
- 6:44touch with you. How are you staying all right, I'll see I've got
- 6:46the zoom. I could have waited for him, and it was late and
- 6:49I felt time. I got as far as the stage door when holding down.
- 6:57I want to have a talk with you, Ernie Jedo. I've heard
- 7:00him use that same tone against the district at tournament while I'm trial for murdering
- 7:06any Jedo. I'm convicted killer a second man stirred nearby, and I recognize
- 7:14Duke Temple another chunk of dry ice. You are Frank Race, ain't you?
- 7:18That's right me? I'm any Jedo. You know I letbe side kicked
- 7:23too. How are you doing? I am all right? And what were
- 7:27you doing? Inside? Right? You're talking to a friend of yours?
- 7:29How course? Yeah, I had some businesses because yeah, now I'd like
- 7:32you to hear my story. You know how I feel about Carol, don't
- 7:36you right? I've been here in rumors too, but some guy trying to
- 7:43cut me out. You had a yen for Carol a few years ago,
- 7:46didn't you? Yes that I can't deny Jedo. Now I find you hanging
- 7:51around here. Could add up, couldn't, But it doesn't. How do
- 7:57I know? Just have to take my word for him. I don't take
- 8:00nobody who would for nothing? All right? And where do we go from
- 8:05him? First? I'm gonna tell you something. Stay away from Carol Coustion,
- 8:11And just so you don't get absent minded, Duke is gonna cattle spring
- 8:15around twe Duke has any idea about using miss brass knuckles, you'd better change
- 8:18his mind, Jeno, fathers you better, I don't. I wouldn't try
- 8:24it. I'm waiting for any here, Sorry, Duke. I have a
- 8:33kid for bass knucks. Don't make any more players, Jeno. This Luca
- 8:35can spit lead faster than Duke gloss. His teeth matter not Duke, tough
- 8:41guy. Ain't you packing a ride makes you feel good? Don't at packing
- 8:46a ride? Know what? I'm a ride, Duke. We can catch
- 8:50up with him, lady for the next couple of days. The case showed
- 8:58about as much if it is a Philadelphia weekend. I heard nothing from me
- 9:03either of the two women involved. Then on the morning of the third day,
- 9:05I gotta call from Civil fun. How would you like to take it
- 9:07to a continent? And you sound greated you get your ring back. I
- 9:11did not. I thought you might be dropping the affair. I am not,
- 9:16and I want you to keep on with it. Have you done anything?
- 9:20Stood up a case of physical violence for myself, but nothing else.
- 9:24I'm going to be of any value to your dustiness. I don't need to
- 9:26know more about this business, So we should get together. How about the
- 9:31continent I get? Do you like violin? Were like? Anything's good?
- 9:35Oh, Lawrence Landry's great? What's brilliant is his continent? Yes? You
- 9:43might pick me up a bat that evening. Just as I was ready to
- 9:52leave, Mark Donovan came in, so I accommodated your services and driver.
- 9:58We the thing that was here the other night. We're saying, where's your
- 10:01cab? Halfway down the black? So you're going to a concert. Yeah,
- 10:09I don't know if any woman is worth that right? Look? I
- 10:13like classical music. Yeah, I guess even a guy like you who hasta
- 10:16a floor in his character summer than race. I didn't get up. He's
- 10:28gone. I thought it gotcha. I didn't want to look. Nothing wrong
- 10:31with Mede A good brushing off one cure. What was that? Boys?
- 10:33You got a good look at him? Between them two pubs. It with
- 10:37short, chunky dot complaint, temper tough trader trading. It seemed to want
- 10:41my life because I relieve him with some funk teeth. Come on, markets,
- 10:45have a simple thing before we start explaining to with the lease. Lawrence
- 10:54Landry put on a good show, young American. He had the looks to
- 10:56catch himself a feminine audience wherever he went, But it was no great violinist.
- 11:01Who is a vein? As a Cupanish was a far better musician.
- 11:05As a solo number, she keyed out a rendition of the Opassion saved the
- 11:09evening for him. Afterward, I went backstage with Sibyl Thorne and met both
- 11:13of them. Oh, Larry, you were marvelous. I enjoyed it ever
- 11:16so much, lad Sibyl, I thought the audience had got a luke warm
- 11:22Oh no, darling, they were mad about you. Weren't saying race.
- 11:26There's a question abouttering a false a. They're making myself dislike. So I
- 11:28avoided the issue by turning to and Who's a Vein? In my opinion of
- 11:31her word, I'm glad you enjoyed it, Mystery, Oh I'm more than
- 11:35enjoyed it. That job on the Apassion not an enthrallable wonderful of you to
- 11:39say so. I that's a great ole way. Mister Rasul made me very
- 11:43happy, but I happen't made Sibylthorne happy. Later in the cab I heard
- 11:48about it. I don't understand your race. Why did you have to go
- 11:52so completely all reward for that girl's playing. You didn't say a word about
- 11:56larring that raised Landry's work out. Have been a hypocrite. He's far from
- 12:01being a first line violenist. You're insane. He's marvelous. Have a cigarette,
- 12:05dentist. Listen while I tell you something. You're infatuated with Landry that
- 12:09makes you blind and death. Make you hate Carol Courson too, You are
- 12:15insane. I was able to put the picture all together night Landry goes for
- 12:20Carol. So you detest the girl, which casts quite it out on your
- 12:22loss of that ring? Are you accusing me of blind I'm accusing you of
- 12:26a more horrible melody jealousy, and I'm going to do your favorite. I'm
- 12:31gonna write this case off. It's finished, for your sake, duty,
- 12:35for your sake. If you're leaving Sybil thorn Man, there was no good
- 12:45night kiss involved that party. I found a phone booth and cold Carol Coursing.
- 12:50Hello, Carol overs black Race. I'm sorry, I can't hear very
- 12:54well. It's race, Carol. Oh, oh, ray, we have
- 12:58a very bad connecting mother. Maybe I'd better stop in and talk to you.
- 13:01You're still up? Where are you? Practically around the corner. It's
- 13:07all right? Then, Oh, wait a minute, what is it?
- 13:09Carol came into the apartment? Oh? Who is it? Carol? We
- 13:18don't get it. No, no, we'll return to the adventures of Frank
- 13:37Race in just about one minute. Now, back to the Adventures of Frank
- 13:50Race. With a few scrambled, hurried minutes that it took Mark Donovan and
- 13:56me to reach the door to Carol Courson's apartment, I developed sense of guilt.
- 14:01I've been too willing to write off this affairs, A bit of unimportant
- 14:03jealousy. I've been wrong exchange I listened to over the telephone. It sounded
- 14:09convincingly like murder. Mark and I found the apartment door a jar. Another
- 14:15summer. We went inside. I used to go with this growing Yes,
- 14:24yes, I used to go with the chest. I won't do no good
- 14:31thing. No, don't do a bit of thing. WHOA what are you
- 14:37going to do? I don't think I can mark call the police started out
- 14:46hot again. The next morning, I felt dull with it and left it
- 14:52about as useful as a barkeeper revival just after eleven o'clock when I got the
- 14:56phone call right now, try hello, John, I've been reading about Carrol,
- 15:05about how you found you. Guess it was all there. I haven't
- 15:07seen a papt I told you how I tell about that. I know that
- 15:13funny time. So much for a guy like me to take lying down where
- 15:18I thought. I wish I could tell you something. I have to tell
- 15:22me nothing and love figured myself. Guess what I come up with. I'm
- 15:30not very bright this morning. Get come up with you, Frank Race,
- 15:35a private pride with a big reputation, A big guy that's in with the
- 15:39cops, a guy that can get away with murdy. Look, Jeo,
- 15:43I'm as sorry about Carol as you are, maybe sorry. I had nothing
- 15:46to do with it. Da. It was a good kid, might be
- 15:50a little crazy, but a good kid who was doing all right. Carol,
- 15:56shout you're wrong, get an unlisted the phone at you. I latched
- 16:00on the number, did not I know where you stay too, Carlile,
- 16:07How I want you to Nuther. I'm gonna get you. I put my
- 16:11mind on that and nothing else. Maybe to day, maybe tomorrow, the
- 16:18next couple of three days. But I'm gonna get you, right, m
- 16:26hm, that's the matter, right. Somebody hung up on Yeah, Mark,
- 16:33somebody hung up on the aster race. Hello, miss Vain. Forgive
- 17:02me for interrupting you, but I'm anxious to find Landry, and I haven't
- 17:03been able to locate him anywhere, not even at his hotel. That's it.
- 17:07I don't even know where he's staying. The Commodore twenty two O fives.
- 17:10Oh thanks reading something to the cousin. Yes, it's one of my
- 17:14solos. Page opens twelve. You know it. Of course we're here again
- 17:18next week. I hope you can hear it. I hope I can too.
- 17:33Yes, you may not remember me, Landry. I'm Frank race mention
- 17:37the other night at the hall. Oh, yes, come in. I
- 17:40hope I'm not disturbing you, not if you don't mind my going on with
- 17:44this workout. I never miss it. Day barbells postgraduate weights too. Look,
- 17:55yeah, I guess I do, all right, I should. I
- 17:57haven't had it for years. I came to see you. About Carol Corson's
- 18:03death. What. I'm an insurance investigator, and it's become rather important to
- 18:07me that this crime doesn't go unsolved. Ryme, haven't you read the papers?
- 18:12Good? Heavens now? I just got up. Well, I,
- 18:15if you have a give it to you. It's bluntly, but Carol Corson
- 18:18was murdered last night in her apartment. Harold Carson murder, I said,
- 18:23Lena Race, excuse me a few minutes while I get into some other clothes.
- 18:30I'll probably be reported to me. He took more time than just a
- 18:37few minutes, so much more than I began poking around the room for the
- 18:41version. There's nothing look at in the way of reading matter except a stack
- 18:45of programs. He played across the country. It proved to be a very
- 18:48instant measure of his skill. He had a limited repertoire. He offered nothing
- 18:52very demanding in the way of technique. So there's a vain share of the
- 18:56program seemed equally light. An addiction to sweetness. Again, it oh her
- 19:02Race, but you might have given me up. He was wearing a fish
- 19:03conniation, but all of the double breasted job a lot strong. Here was
- 19:08a boy already, not only for reporters, but photographers as well. What
- 19:12was it you wanted to discuss about her? She was carrying a torch for
- 19:17him. I had a feeling it might might have been mutual. I may
- 19:21have been wrong why. I might like Carol, of course, but there
- 19:25was really nothing too serious between us. How about you and Cibil Thorn.
- 19:29I'm very fond of the Cibil. Do you mind telling me if you were
- 19:32with Carol Coursing last night? Luckily I wasn't not last night? Did you
- 19:37prove it by well? Proving? It might be a bit awkward, might
- 19:41be a lot more awkward if you can. What do you mean? We're
- 19:45talking about a murderer. Let us have a way of getting downright nasty with
- 19:48reputation. You mean I could get bad publicity out of this. I try
- 19:52to say which way to twist, but no one's been to see me yet,
- 19:56and it's mid afternoon. Maybe the police won't know about I don't know
- 20:00about your connection with Carol. Well know I think I sh'll tell them is
- 20:04that it. I won't go out of my way to tell them. They
- 20:07have to. You're trying to make something out of nothing. I know a
- 20:11lot of women. I have to be popular with them. Yes, you
- 20:12do them, sort of work at it, don't do them. I work
- 20:15at other things too. I'll demonstrate one of them. It took me suddenly
- 20:21into surprise. Moved in and grip my arms, lifted jem me against the
- 20:25wall. There race completely helpless, aren't you? And I can step back
- 20:32and that a few more times. They they have a new opening into the
- 20:37adjoining room. Wouldn't do you any good either? Would It makes an interesting
- 20:41game? All right? We keep it up? Or have you expended enough
- 20:45energy? I just want to make sure you're impressed with the fact that I
- 20:48didn't see Carol Carson last night, also that there was nothing serious between them,
- 20:52so I'm not to say anything to the blaze. That's right, well
- 20:57now, been properly impressed, Would you mind putting me down? Evening papers
- 21:07broke the thing wide open as far as Landry was concerned, without my saying
- 21:10a word. Couldn't help grinning when I saw his picture on the front page.
- 21:15But Ernie Jeddo's likeness was there too, and I'm looking at that wiped
- 21:19away with the smile and left me with a tight little nothing the stomach Ernie
- 21:25Jeddo had been picked up, but I thought it wouldn't be long before he'd
- 21:27be free. Hadn't meant anything but pleasure for yours. Truly, I wasn't
- 21:33working for anyone else in this case, I was working for myself. Another
- 21:37complication edited the picture about nine o'clock, when Sybil Thorne showed up at the
- 21:40apartment. I thought we should get together and have a talk. Sensible.
- 21:47You know Larry Landry is furious with your aunt. You must have just seen
- 21:51him. I just talked to him back phone. Larry and I have a
- 21:55date to night after the concert. You sound quite smoked, and you don't
- 22:00the way you deserve that checking. But I get the feeling that in a
- 22:03lot of other ways you could be careful. Rice, you're getting out of
- 22:07care Why did you come here? Make it a good one? Dudges?
- 22:14Yeah, still working for me? An you? Maybe I'm giving you more
- 22:17credit than you deserve. You came to glow? Why he came to put
- 22:22across the effect of a very cool lady in a warm night? Well you
- 22:27could. I'm thoroughly a thank you? And what am I supposed to do?
- 22:33Now? Go? No? Not you? Not until I took it
- 22:41on my arms and was cool looking lips at one in softness. Let's them
- 22:45looking boy ahead. And I didn't let it go right away. He still
- 22:51kept her hands on my shoulders as she back to gain And don't get any
- 22:56ideas, Rice, I still can't keep I take declandry oh my budges.
- 23:03As I said before, maybe you deserve it. It's about the next couple
- 23:12of hours, moving restlessly about the apartment, made myself some coffee, tossed
- 23:17down to scotch and so, then picked up the paper, read the program
- 23:19of Landry's concert. It'll be over by now, and the realization of it
- 23:26was like they pulled in the eye. They answered the whole thing. I
- 23:30grabbed up a jacket, slung it on. Hey, what do you think
- 23:32you're just figured out this case? Mark, I've got to move fast to
- 23:34stop another murder. You go on that straight, you'll move right into your
- 23:37own murder. You got a reception committee out there, the same one as
- 23:41before, and another guy main looking face like a badge or any jedo.
- 23:45But I've got to go out Mark, all right, this time I want
- 23:48something besides an end ridge. Yeah, there's your jedo across the street at
- 24:00a lamppost o. Guy somewhere, I'm going out, Hello me, I
- 24:14got jed al right, the other guy's running. Come on, knock,
- 24:18get me the civil thoughts before it's too late. Now you can turn on
- 24:33the light, let me go. I'm sorry. You better stay. And
- 24:41this is the gun that killed Carol Courses, isn't it, Miss Many?
- 24:48Jealousy? Horrible melody, isn't it? Can't know? You can't know how
- 24:55much I love him? Who much I've been hurried? Come in, Dutchess,
- 25:03that have been Landry with him? What are you doing here? I'm
- 25:07got to close the door, Dutchess. This isn't a pretty situation. Miss
- 25:10Van is here Landry because he intended to kill Sibyl Thorn the same way she
- 25:14killed Carol corson good Heavens to Teresa. Why because she's in love with you
- 25:18the point that it's made her sick. Teresa, I gave you to understand,
- 25:22you gave her to understand what she should just forget you. You know,
- 25:26some people can't pull that off, Landry. They get ill, they're
- 25:27driven to murder. But what are we going to do about this race?
- 25:30We're going to give this girl all the breaks we can, Raisin, Teresa,
- 25:37will you go and give yourself up? Yeah, let give myself up.
- 25:42Now, wait a moment. I think we should hold her here for
- 25:45the police. After I'm making this decision. It may give her a break,
- 25:49and you'll give her promise. I'm not going to let you do it
- 25:52that way. Race, go ahead to Rais, Oh, no more muscles,
- 25:56Landring, all right, try this on your bye. Go ahead to
- 26:03raise him. You'll find a cab downstairs. The driver will know where to
- 26:07take them. How did you know? Race music? It's all wrapped up
- 26:18of that girl's emotions happened to leap through a pile of Landry's past programs.
- 26:22All the theres of vain Solars had been sweetness of light, handle and biberously
- 26:26that sort of Last night, before killing Carol Corson, she showed her mood
- 26:32with the Abassia Nutter. Tonight with You and Mine, she featured that funeral
- 26:37movement from Beethoven's twelfth Sonata, Just my dear gets it paid over. It
- 26:45saved my life. I'm terribly grateful, rass. Oh yeah, that is
