- 0:02Speaker 1: This is an unspoiled network podcast. This is spoil Me,
- 0:09Speaker 1: covering one piece the live action Netflix series, Season two,
- 0:18Speaker 1: episode seven, Reindeer Sames. In this episode, I hate all
- 0:27Speaker 1: of it pretty much, from top to bottom. I hate it.
- 0:31Speaker 1: I hate it. Everybody stop making Chopper cry. Please. Welcome
- 0:42Speaker 1: to spoil Me. Welcome to the show everyone. I am Natasha.
- 1:03Speaker 1: Thank you very much to Bernadette and to Florian for
- 1:07Speaker 1: commissioning this episode. I guess look, everybody knows if you
- 1:15Speaker 1: have listened to my original coverage. I don't like Chopper's
- 1:19Speaker 1: origin story. I just don't like it. It makes me
- 1:23Speaker 1: really sad. I feel like everybody in his history like
- 1:27Speaker 1: kind of sucks. And I feel like they've really softened
- 1:32Speaker 1: that up a lot in this episode, so that's nice.
- 1:36Speaker 1: But overall, the thrust of the story is the same,
- 1:41Speaker 1: and I just I made sure I watched this with
- 1:47Speaker 1: my husband right before, like last night, so that it
- 1:51Speaker 1: would be fresh and that I wouldn't have to rewatch it,
- 1:54Speaker 1: because I knew I wasn't gonna watch this one. Twice
- 1:57Speaker 1: I was just like, yeah, it's not happening. I absolutely
- 1:59Speaker 1: fucking know that. Florian says, I was surprised you were
- 2:04Speaker 1: looking forward to the next episode last time, you know, Florian,
- 2:07Speaker 1: If I had really stopped to think about it, I
- 2:10Speaker 1: probably would have, like, you know, but I just wanted
- 2:12Speaker 1: to see more Chopper, That's all it is. In my head.
- 2:15Speaker 1: It's just like, well, we're gonna get more of him, yay.
- 2:18Speaker 1: And I should have like really considered a bit more
- 2:23Speaker 1: what all we were gonna get, because, yeah, Bernadette says,
- 2:29Speaker 1: live action Choppy looks so fluffy and cute. And I'm
- 2:32Speaker 1: not even a big Chopper fan. Yeah he is precious.
- 2:37Speaker 1: I you know, this is a very tricky thing to
- 2:40Speaker 1: pull off, and I feel like they are really managing it.
- 2:43Speaker 1: I will say that when he turns into like his
- 2:45Speaker 1: humanish form, that is the creepiest, most off putting thing.
- 2:49Speaker 1: And I actually think it looks like pretty close to
- 2:54Speaker 1: the anime, so that's accurate. But it's something about seeing
- 2:58Speaker 1: it in live action that kind of brings home like, oh,
- 3:00Speaker 1: that's not right, and so I can't help but be like,
- 3:04Speaker 1: I guess I kind of understand why folks were shooting
- 3:07Speaker 1: at him when he looks like that. That is a
- 3:09Speaker 1: freaky looking creature. Also, you know, I often will lament
- 3:15Speaker 1: in the anime that he doesn't get to fight as
- 3:19Speaker 1: much as I wish he could. And now that I
- 3:22Speaker 1: see what he looks like when he's in his like
- 3:24Speaker 1: more fighting frame of what's the word fighting form, I
- 3:29Speaker 1: guess I probably will have less of a problem with
- 3:34Speaker 1: the fact that he isn't going to transform its often
- 3:37Speaker 1: because I do not care for it. Where's my boy?
- 3:41Speaker 1: That thing is not my boy? But yeah, so this
- 3:48Speaker 1: this episode is almost entirely Koreha explaining Chopper's origin story
- 3:57Speaker 1: to them, which I had kind of also forgotten the
- 4:00Speaker 1: fact that Chopper does not relay this story himself, that
- 4:05Speaker 1: it's like told on his behalf, which is kind of
- 4:10Speaker 1: a weird. Like I understand doing this to like make
- 4:15Speaker 1: it so that we because he isn't going to open
- 4:20Speaker 1: up at this point, you know, to them, So I
- 4:22Speaker 1: do understand it. But later on, when Lufy is like,
- 4:28Speaker 1: you know, connecting with him about the pirate flag and stuff,
- 4:31Speaker 1: I was like, has Chopper been watching them listen to
- 4:35Speaker 1: his life story or like, does he know that Lufy
- 4:39Speaker 1: understands what this means to him? Now I could? It
- 4:41Speaker 1: was hard for me to quite tell. I'm assuming that
- 4:45Speaker 1: he is because it does seem like Chopper has a
- 4:48Speaker 1: tendency to just sort of like hover around and hide
- 4:52Speaker 1: and eavesdrop, which is fine, but there is something about
- 4:57Speaker 1: the fact that he doesn't tell his own story that
- 5:00Speaker 1: adds to the sensation of him being like a child,
- 5:03Speaker 1: which Korea does call him a boy uh and I
- 5:07Speaker 1: like that she says it with like a very firm
- 5:10Speaker 1: emphasis to be like, that is what he is because
- 5:15Speaker 1: he's a person. So y'all can stop with the weird.
- 5:19Speaker 1: It's an animal and monster and all of this stuff.
- 5:27Speaker 1: But yeah, so I'm gonna I'm gonna start off. So
- 5:37Speaker 1: I'm trying to think exactly where I want to begin.
- 5:39Speaker 1: If I just want to like really quickly address what
- 5:43Speaker 1: all is going on with Zoro and Soangi and Dalton,
- 5:50Speaker 1: I guess I will get that out of the way
- 5:52Speaker 1: because they are sort of there. They have a very
- 5:56Speaker 1: small part of this episode. We have a flashback in
- 6:04Speaker 1: the story that Kurea tells about when doctor Hirolouk goes
- 6:10Speaker 1: to the castle and he has the confrontation with Dalton,
- 6:13Speaker 1: and you get to see Dalton like completely to King
- 6:19Speaker 1: Woppole's face, be like you ain't shit all y'all suck.
- 6:24Speaker 1: This is bullshit, But it's the weirdo little dude in
- 6:31Speaker 1: that like kind of clown suit off to the side
- 6:35Speaker 1: that I had forgotten about. As soon as I saw
- 6:37Speaker 1: him in the in the Throne room, I was like,
- 6:40Speaker 1: oh yeah, because it's it's sort of funny how everybody
- 6:46Speaker 1: in the like surrounding Wopole kind of looks like it's
- 6:50Speaker 1: a certainly an exaggerated stylized outfit, but there attire feels
- 6:55Speaker 1: mostly appropriate. And then there's this dude who I think
- 6:59Speaker 1: it's supposed to be giving Jester a little bit, but
- 7:04Speaker 1: there's there's nothing about his behavior that is giving Jester.
- 7:10Speaker 1: It's purely the clothing, and dude is like just looking
- 7:17Speaker 1: like he got made into a Jester against his will
- 7:24Speaker 1: and never showered, redid his makeup, or slept since the
- 7:32Speaker 1: day it happened, and that it's like part of his
- 7:35Speaker 1: penance that he simply has to haunt Woppole's side forever
- 7:41Speaker 1: as this like weird dude. So there comes a point
- 7:47Speaker 1: where Dalton and Usup comes up to see I was
- 7:54Speaker 1: about to say Sonji. Usup comes up to Cazorro apologizes
- 7:58Speaker 1: for snapping at him, which like fair, I really, look,
- 8:03Speaker 1: I'm not really that sorry, but I appreciate you wus
- 8:07Speaker 1: up for being a bigger person than I would be
- 8:10Speaker 1: gives him a beer, which Zorro. I love his reaction
- 8:13Speaker 1: because when he says I brought you breakfast, Zoro's look
- 8:16Speaker 1: at first is just like ugh, what, And then he
- 8:18Speaker 1: sees the beer and he's like oh word and grabs it,
- 8:20Speaker 1: and then it's like we're square. We're fine. It's cool.
- 8:26Speaker 1: But later on, Dalton spots a fire burning somewhere. They
- 8:34Speaker 1: can see the smoke coming up from it, and they
- 8:38Speaker 1: are wondering what the hell is going on because they're
- 8:41Speaker 1: sort of waiting for some kind of word or signal
- 8:43Speaker 1: from Loofy somehow, which I don't really know how that
- 8:45Speaker 1: would even happen, but uh yeah, they are determining that, like,
- 8:53Speaker 1: we're probably going to start heading up this path later,
- 8:58Speaker 1: like in this morning. That's the vibe, so I think
- 9:02Speaker 1: once Dalton gets jumped, it's pretty early in the day,
- 9:06Speaker 1: but Dalton goes out to investigate. He Zoro of course
- 9:11Speaker 1: offers to come with him, and I wish he had
- 9:14Speaker 1: because I feel like Zoro probably could have swung a
- 9:17Speaker 1: sword and stopped those friggin arrows and it would have
- 9:19Speaker 1: been fine. But Dalton is alone and he gets three
- 9:25Speaker 1: arrows in the chest like off center, granted, but like
- 9:31Speaker 1: pooh poo poop right down right down the side, and
- 9:36Speaker 1: it's the fucking I don't really know what you would
- 9:39Speaker 1: call the other dude, what his like. I'm sure he
- 9:43Speaker 1: has an actual name, but I'm thinking about like the
- 9:45Speaker 1: role he plays. Is he an advisor? We don't really
- 9:47Speaker 1: actually see him talking to Wopole. He just sort of
- 9:51Speaker 1: stands there, like is he a guard? He's dressed very
- 9:55Speaker 1: fancy for a guard. That's the only thing that kind
- 9:57Speaker 1: of trips me up is like he has a very
- 9:59Speaker 1: ornate case that is much more decorative than functional. So
- 10:05Speaker 1: I'm it sort of feels like he must be another noble,
- 10:09Speaker 1: but I don't know why he'd be standing there like that. Regardless,
- 10:13Speaker 1: this guy is with the Jester and they are very
- 10:18Speaker 1: happy to have caught this prey because Dalton was supposed
- 10:22Speaker 1: to have been arrested and executed and whatnot, but he
- 10:27Speaker 1: got away because all of Walpole's people apparently just are
- 10:31Speaker 1: not very good at this. Uh they will. Dalton's special.
- 10:37Speaker 1: He's a special guy. So oh, I'm so sorry. Florian
- 10:42Speaker 1: just says he is in charge of HR. I don't
- 10:45Speaker 1: know why that's so funny, but that's very good. So
- 10:53Speaker 1: Dalton is in danger by the end of this episode.
- 10:58Speaker 1: I'm pretty sure him getting like ripped up is almost
- 11:01Speaker 1: the last scene in the whole thing, and I was
- 11:04Speaker 1: just like, God, what a fucking bummer. This episode was
- 11:07Speaker 1: from start to finish. Man, you know, it's just yucks.
- 11:13Speaker 1: So all right, now we will back up and we
- 11:16Speaker 1: will talk about the uh the story. So Sony and
- 11:23Speaker 1: Loofy are in the kitchen together and they are theorizing
- 11:26Speaker 1: on what this little furry creature could be and Lufy
- 11:32Speaker 1: is swearing like I heard it talk. I don't think
- 11:36Speaker 1: it's just an animal, and Sonji decides to be like, well,
- 11:40Speaker 1: if it's just an animal, then maybe we should cook
- 11:45Speaker 1: it and eat it. And it was very funny to
- 11:49Speaker 1: me because Loofy goes, that's a great idea and is
- 11:53Speaker 1: like playing along, and it's very clear from the way
- 11:56Speaker 1: he says it that he's playing along, and I was thinking, wow,
- 12:01Speaker 1: Lufy picked up on that this is a joke, And
- 12:03Speaker 1: as soon as I think that, my husband goes, I
- 12:06Speaker 1: don't think that Lufy should be smart enough to get
- 12:08Speaker 1: what it is that Sanji is doing right now. I
- 12:10Speaker 1: don't think he would think it was a joke, and
- 12:12Speaker 1: I was just internally just like ooh, both of us
- 12:16Speaker 1: are wondering about that. It's a I can't recall if
- 12:18Speaker 1: this is anything that happens in the anime and how
- 12:21Speaker 1: it goes. But I did just want to like address
- 12:24Speaker 1: the fact that both he and I were sort of like, huh, okay, well,
- 12:28Speaker 1: I mean, I'm not mad at it, but it was
- 12:32Speaker 1: something that I thought and then he said aloud, so
- 12:34Speaker 1: I did want to mention it. And eventually they stumble
- 12:41Speaker 1: across the trunk full of stuff. Lufy finds the pirate
- 12:45Speaker 1: flag inside, which needless to say, captures his fancy, and
- 12:50Speaker 1: he starts to pull it out and look at it,
- 12:52Speaker 1: and Chopper gets very irate and immediately is like, put
- 12:57Speaker 1: that down, what are you doing? And Lufy is like, ah,
- 13:03Speaker 1: I knew you could talk, and is very gratified, but also,
- 13:08Speaker 1: you know, this isn't like it's not making their relationship better.
- 13:13Speaker 1: What Lufy really wants is to get Chopper to like
- 13:18Speaker 1: come out of his shell and talk to him, because
- 13:20Speaker 1: if there's one thing that Lufy is, it's curious about people,
- 13:25Speaker 1: you know what I mean. So anyway, he uh Chopper
- 13:32Speaker 1: is very reticent, understandably from the way that he has
- 13:37Speaker 1: been treated to like let them see him or have
- 13:43Speaker 1: like any real interaction with them. So this moment of
- 13:48Speaker 1: just you know, don't mess with that. He just walks
- 13:54Speaker 1: away after that, and Lufy is super excited that he
- 13:59Speaker 1: can talk and just smiles, bites this carrot, and then
- 14:03Speaker 1: we smash cut to everybody having this incredible chicken soup
- 14:09Speaker 1: that Sanjy made I love. Nami says, this is like
- 14:11Speaker 1: the best meal I've ever had. It's because you have
- 14:13Speaker 1: any inn in like four days, girl, Like that is why,
- 14:16Speaker 1: no shade. I'm sure the soup is insanely good, but
- 14:19Speaker 1: just like you know, that is what is going Look, guys,
- 14:22Speaker 1: chain soup is one of those things that I feel
- 14:23Speaker 1: like people sleep on how really truly fucking amazing it
- 14:28Speaker 1: can be. It's just you know, a lot of folks
- 14:31Speaker 1: think of it as just like a basic thing, and
- 14:33Speaker 1: it can be, and that's fine too, But like if
- 14:37Speaker 1: you get like a rotisserie chicken from somewhere, to make
- 14:39Speaker 1: it a little easier on yourself, it's pre roasted strip
- 14:42Speaker 1: the meat off it, boil the bones for a few
- 14:45Speaker 1: hours for your stock, cut the meat up, and then
- 14:50Speaker 1: saute some onion and carrot and celery in some butter
- 14:55Speaker 1: until just a little bit of browning. Not a lot,
- 14:57Speaker 1: but I like a little bit. And it adds something.
- 15:00Speaker 1: And then you pour the stock in there and start
- 15:02Speaker 1: to bring it up and potato and whatnot. And I
- 15:05Speaker 1: remember I made this one for my mom using this method,
- 15:08Speaker 1: and she came home she was like, chicken soup, Oh okay,
- 15:11Speaker 1: And she took a sip off her spoon and she
- 15:14Speaker 1: just went, oh my god. And I was like, that
- 15:18Speaker 1: is correct. I did not learn to make soup for
- 15:22Speaker 1: my mom. She makes a decent one. But like the
- 15:25Speaker 1: fucking key is, the chicken should be roasted first. Do
- 15:31Speaker 1: not use raw chicken for chicken soup. It is not
- 15:34Speaker 1: the same. It's just fucking not the same. That is
- 15:37Speaker 1: my tip for me to you today. So this is
- 15:41Speaker 1: also me avoiding talking about Chopper's dire fucking history. So
- 15:49Speaker 1: we see here a look with his incredible hair. I
- 15:52Speaker 1: really am trying to figure out if this is one
- 15:55Speaker 1: wig that they have managed to split into these like
- 15:58Speaker 1: four sections, or if it's four separate hair pieces that
- 16:02Speaker 1: have to be affixed separately. I think it probably is
- 16:07Speaker 1: one piece. God, as I'm saying it, I'm just like,
- 16:10Speaker 1: what are you doing? I think it probably is one wig.
- 16:20Speaker 1: But it is of great interest to me with some
- 16:24Speaker 1: of these costumes how they're built, because like, this is
- 16:27Speaker 1: originally what I started going to school for, you know,
- 16:30Speaker 1: I am really interested in not just what costumes look like,
- 16:36Speaker 1: but how they are made so that you can get
- 16:41Speaker 1: them like certain things. If you were really wearing a
- 16:45Speaker 1: piece of clothing that actually looked like that, there would
- 16:47Speaker 1: be like weird fascinatings in strange places. And but these
- 16:51Speaker 1: clothes don't have that look to them, which means all
- 16:53Speaker 1: of that's concealed. And I'm so curious, Like, I would
- 16:57Speaker 1: love it if they would make a like making of
- 17:02Speaker 1: miniseries about One Piece with just like all of the
- 17:06Speaker 1: costumes and sets. I would watch the shit out of
- 17:09Speaker 1: something like that. That's like the extra features on Lord
- 17:12Speaker 1: of the Rings. I watch all of those. It's hours
- 17:14Speaker 1: of stuff, and I don't care. I'm totally into it.
- 17:20Speaker 1: So let's see. Bernadette says in the original Lufy is
- 17:26Speaker 1: dead set on chasing Chopper as emergency rations Okay, that's
- 17:30Speaker 1: what it is. I remember being mad at the way
- 17:33Speaker 1: that Lufy was behaving with Chopper, so that totally makes sense.
- 17:38Speaker 1: This is why in the anime, Lufy misses Chopper story
- 17:41Speaker 1: because he's chasing him through the castle. Oh he's not
- 17:45Speaker 1: there for the story. Ah right. Nehua says it is
- 17:49Speaker 1: one piece from behind the scenes. Appreciates you Nehua for
- 17:54Speaker 1: the investigation. Also, I would like to point out I'm
- 17:57Speaker 1: not the only one who said one piece about this wig,
- 18:00Speaker 1: so you know, don't don't yell at me, Bernadette. I'm
- 18:04Speaker 1: so mad at the costume designs. How dare they be
- 18:07Speaker 1: so crazy accurate and amazing. Now I'm even more frustrated
- 18:09Speaker 1: with other properties. This is the thing when somebody does
- 18:12Speaker 1: shit really right, you just want to be like, it
- 18:15Speaker 1: can be done. See all of you who fucked off
- 18:17Speaker 1: and like, yeah, completely agree. Florian says they have some
- 18:22Speaker 1: VIDs on it, but just like ten minutes long. Yeah,
- 18:24Speaker 1: I like a series. I am not kidding. Do a
- 18:28Speaker 1: whole hour on just the sets from season one only,
- 18:32Speaker 1: and I would watch, you know, two separate hours, one
- 18:36Speaker 1: for first season, one for second season, because we've gotten
- 18:38Speaker 1: totally different sets. I want to see everything. I want
- 18:42Speaker 1: to see how it was conceived, what the inspo from
- 18:45Speaker 1: the anime was, and how they came up with, like,
- 18:47Speaker 1: because there's things in this like the the you know,
- 18:52Speaker 1: the vanishing point when you are figuring out the sort
- 18:56Speaker 1: of perspective that you have to use to make something
- 18:59Speaker 1: look bigger or smaller than it really is, and also
- 19:01Speaker 1: to give it that very exaggerated anime quality. It's not
- 19:06Speaker 1: as easy as it can look, you know. And also
- 19:10Speaker 1: I would love to see just like the like what
- 19:15Speaker 1: CG and what isn't That's the other question that I
- 19:18Speaker 1: have is like I know how much that we have
- 19:20Speaker 1: to fill in with CG these days, but like we
- 19:23Speaker 1: also know a lot more on this show seems to
- 19:26Speaker 1: be done with practicals if they can, and I'm interested
- 19:30Speaker 1: in that, Like what's the you know, Bernadette said, I
- 19:36Speaker 1: was about to say that the extra figures features and
- 19:38Speaker 1: Lord of the Rings. Yeah, I got an internship with
- 19:44Speaker 1: what a workshop actually when I was going to school
- 19:47Speaker 1: for this stuff, which is the workshop that handled Lord
- 19:50Speaker 1: of the Rings, And I remember just losing my mind.
- 19:52Speaker 1: I was so excited, and then like there came a
- 19:54Speaker 1: point where I realized, oh but This is not what
- 19:56Speaker 1: I want to do with the rest of my life.
- 19:57Speaker 1: This is a thankless, grueling job, and you are fully
- 20:01Speaker 1: expected to work at least eighty hours a week. It's
- 20:03Speaker 1: just the lifestyle of folks in that industry is simply
- 20:09Speaker 1: not something I'm interested in. It's Bernadette, one hour or two,
- 20:14Speaker 1: give me like sixteen. I need at least three hours
- 20:17Speaker 1: on Zoro and Miehawk alone, Bernadette, I think you need
- 20:20Speaker 1: three hours on them doing something very different, and we're
- 20:23Speaker 1: just not going to talk about it. Florian says. It
- 20:26Speaker 1: really feels like we try not to talk about Chopper,
- 20:29Speaker 1: and I understand Florian saying it. Out Look, I just
- 20:36Speaker 1: don't like it at all. Okay, here a look, here,
- 20:41Speaker 1: a look so here a look in the anime is
- 20:45Speaker 1: a shit. I am supposed to like him and find
- 20:48Speaker 1: him like a like frustrating but a little charming, I think,
- 20:52Speaker 1: and I don't. He is deeply irresponsible, fucks around with
- 20:57Speaker 1: people's health, doing experimental shit that is well intentioned, and
- 21:02Speaker 1: so I'm supposed to just like kind of not look
- 21:04Speaker 1: at the fact that he's poisoning people and ruining their lives.
- 21:08Speaker 1: Turns a person into a frog, like she just talks
- 21:10Speaker 1: about that. Here, we don't see the scene which I
- 21:12Speaker 1: remember in the anime we actually watch happen, because if
- 21:16Speaker 1: we watch it happen the way it does in the anime,
- 21:19Speaker 1: we're not gonna like him. They know he doesn't work
- 21:24Speaker 1: well as a character anymore, And so we have this
- 21:29Speaker 1: thing where we're hearing about him being kind of like
- 21:32Speaker 1: a quack, but we don't watch the damage that he does.
- 21:37Speaker 1: And I think that's the best we can do if
- 21:41Speaker 1: we're gonna stick with the character being the way he is,
- 21:45Speaker 1: distancing ourselves from the results of what he does is
- 21:50Speaker 1: probably the most honest and true to character without making
- 21:55Speaker 1: me despise him the way that I did. I also
- 21:59Speaker 1: just have an issue you with like the fact that
- 22:03Speaker 1: any time that somebody intends for a certain thing to be,
- 22:06Speaker 1: you know, there, I'm meant to like forgive all of
- 22:11Speaker 1: the damage that they did. I don't like that kind
- 22:13Speaker 1: of vibe in a character or in the way a
- 22:16Speaker 1: story is told. If it's clear like I'm being pushed
- 22:19Speaker 1: to sort of forgive a person, I don't enjoy that.
- 22:24Speaker 1: And Hero look just never really feels like he takes
- 22:27Speaker 1: responsibility for the mistakes that he has made. He just
- 22:32Speaker 1: waves things off as like, well, that's the price one
- 22:35Speaker 1: pays for progress and discoveries in science, and I'm just like,
- 22:40Speaker 1: you're not paying the price, though other people are like
- 22:42Speaker 1: that's you know, which I understand in reality is how
- 22:46Speaker 1: medicine can work. But there is a system to it,
- 22:49Speaker 1: and he doesn't have that education, which makes the fact
- 22:52Speaker 1: that doctor Rene is so irritated with him and doesn't
- 22:57Speaker 1: have patience with him a lot more were like respect
- 23:02Speaker 1: respectable to me. In the uh anime, I understood her
- 23:06Speaker 1: not liking him because I didn't either, but there there
- 23:10Speaker 1: was like there's something about seeing her in action here
- 23:14Speaker 1: where I'm just sort of going, yeah, this is all
- 23:17Speaker 1: grounded a little bit more in what's actually happening and
- 23:21Speaker 1: is less simply like, oh, her character is harsh and
- 23:25Speaker 1: so we're gonna have her, you know. So hare Look,
- 23:33Speaker 1: the first time we see him is running from some
- 23:36Speaker 1: guards because all of the doctors are being rounded up,
- 23:40Speaker 1: and eventually it's unclear what exactly happens to make here
- 23:46Speaker 1: a look think that all of the doctors are sick.
- 23:49Speaker 1: I don't remember where it comes from, because like the
- 23:54Speaker 1: way that doctor and Korea is telling us the story
- 23:59Speaker 1: is making it very much sound like the king wants
- 24:04Speaker 1: all the doctors to wait on him like he is.
- 24:08Speaker 1: It's interesting because in the scene where he is at
- 24:12Speaker 1: that summit, he talks about how if the people don't
- 24:16Speaker 1: appreciate my gifts, I'll just take them back. And so
- 24:20Speaker 1: there had been a moment where I was like, I
- 24:22Speaker 1: can't remember exactly why he's doing this. Is it because
- 24:26Speaker 1: he is trying to deprive his people of medical care
- 24:28Speaker 1: on purpose? But once we see him in the throne room,
- 24:34Speaker 1: it's a little unclear because like, all these doctors are here,
- 24:38Speaker 1: and I was like, okay, so he is ill and
- 24:41Speaker 1: trying to but then he says like, there's nothing wrong
- 24:44Speaker 1: with me. I'm fit as a fiddle. So I don't
- 24:47Speaker 1: get exactly why he wants them all or what it is.
- 24:50Speaker 1: It's Florian says it is a rumor started by Walpole
- 24:58Speaker 1: that they are sick to lure other doctors. Okay, but
- 25:02Speaker 1: doctor Rene has simply not fallen for the rumor. Is
- 25:06Speaker 1: that correct? Uh? He used the doctor so that people
- 25:10Speaker 1: have to beg him to get help. Oh, so he's
- 25:14Speaker 1: not like refusing people treatment. He's like the middle man.
- 25:20Speaker 1: He's the insurance company basically okay, okay, all making sense,
- 25:28Speaker 1: So God, there is just too much of this that's
- 25:32Speaker 1: like on point. I hate it so uh. As he
- 25:39Speaker 1: and Kreja are hiding under the same bridge, they hear shots.
- 25:44Speaker 1: He thinks that it's the guards and they turn and
- 25:46Speaker 1: look and it is a creature of some kind running
- 25:50Speaker 1: into the forest. Now he takes off because he thinks
- 25:54Speaker 1: the guards are coming, but stumbles accidentally across these like
- 25:58Speaker 1: bloody footprints until he evently finds a small Chopper who
- 26:04Speaker 1: has like you know, dropped down to his regular size
- 26:08Speaker 1: her like hunched against this tree bloody and it is
- 26:13Speaker 1: awful and I hated it, and he tries to help.
- 26:16Speaker 1: At first, Chopper is not having it, and then he
- 26:21Speaker 1: uh manages to convince Chopper like, look, I'm just trying
- 26:25Speaker 1: to help. And we have Chopper waking up in his
- 26:28Speaker 1: little hut with a fire and medical care and I
- 26:32Speaker 1: love him like talking to Chopper, and Chopper replies and
- 26:37Speaker 1: then goes shit. Chopper swears a couple times in this episode,
- 26:41Speaker 1: which is delightful. For the record, I am fully on board. Absolutely.
- 26:47Speaker 1: I feel like Chopper wouldn't say fuck but shit. Yeah,
- 26:51Speaker 1: fair totally fair game. So we have like this lovely
- 26:59Speaker 1: bit where Chopper has found someplace to stay. I don't
- 27:08Speaker 1: even like to like, I don't even want to do this, guys,
- 27:10Speaker 1: because what happened. So he has found some place to stay,
- 27:14Speaker 1: and he is so rosy cheeked and bright eyed, and
- 27:18Speaker 1: there's a tear like running down after he has given
- 27:23Speaker 1: care here and given a name. I forgot that hero
- 27:27Speaker 1: look is the one who names him. And we have
- 27:36Speaker 1: a bit of a sequence of Chopper learning all kinds
- 27:42Speaker 1: of like I want to say, medical knowledge, but it's
- 27:47Speaker 1: not really like it's just a bunch of bullshit that
- 27:50Speaker 1: eventually we have to have Corey has step in and
- 27:54Speaker 1: give him real training. It's reminding me of like a
- 28:01Speaker 1: weirdo prepper who lives in a trailer in the woods,
- 28:07Speaker 1: stumbles across an abandoned child and tells this child that
- 28:12Speaker 1: he needs to wear this hat lined with lead to
- 28:19Speaker 1: keep them from taking his brain waves, not to go
- 28:22Speaker 1: outside when there's like contrails in the air, and don't
- 28:29Speaker 1: drink fluoridated water. Like there's just something to this that's
- 28:33Speaker 1: all very I'm so glad that you have a safe
- 28:36Speaker 1: place to be and somebody who is watching out for you,
- 28:40Speaker 1: but the ways in which they are watching out for
- 28:42Speaker 1: you are also a problem of their own, you know
- 28:46Speaker 1: what I'm saying. So sorry, Florian says doctorne and here
- 28:53Speaker 1: look are free healthcare that Walpole wants to stop. Here
- 28:56Speaker 1: looks actor's name is Mark Harrolic. By the way, I
- 29:00Speaker 1: my husband looked that up and was like, oh, that
- 29:01Speaker 1: is so weird. But yeah, so it's like they grow
- 29:07Speaker 1: quite close, and eventually he explains to Chopper about there
- 29:13Speaker 1: was a guy who was really ill and he saw
- 29:17Speaker 1: all of these doctors and he had an incurable disease,
- 29:22Speaker 1: and then one day he saw the most beautiful sight
- 29:27Speaker 1: and when he saw a doctor the next time, they
- 29:30Speaker 1: told him that he was cured. And the beautiful sight,
- 29:35Speaker 1: the emotion that was generated from that is what cured him.
- 29:43Speaker 1: So it was the cherry blossoms, which we still haven't
- 29:47Speaker 1: had the thing of course where that whole thing happens.
- 29:52Speaker 1: But you know, this is just again I hate this plotline.
- 29:59Speaker 1: This is a guy telling Chopper a story about how
- 30:02Speaker 1: anything is possible, using the most nonsense example being a liar,
- 30:07Speaker 1: by the way, in the midst of it, by not
- 30:09Speaker 1: admitting that this was him, that this all happened to
- 30:11Speaker 1: in the first place. So I don't like that. And
- 30:15Speaker 1: the idea that like maybe this one doctor that said
- 30:18Speaker 1: you were cured was full of shit is not even
- 30:21Speaker 1: occurring to him. It's simply like, oh, yeah, I saw
- 30:24Speaker 1: something so beautiful that it cured my cancer. What it
- 30:29Speaker 1: is just it is simply nonsense from start to finish.
- 30:33Speaker 1: And so it makes the fact that like Chopper is
- 30:35Speaker 1: inspired to find the cure to everything, it undermines him
- 30:42Speaker 1: as a character for me in a way that I
- 30:43Speaker 1: don't want to happen because I love him, but it
- 30:47Speaker 1: feels like he has just been fed a bill of
- 30:51Speaker 1: goods by an anti vaxer and is like deciding to
- 30:55Speaker 1: make his entire life about that in a way, you
- 30:57Speaker 1: know what I'm saying, Like it just I don't like
- 31:00Speaker 1: any of it. So he shows him like the pirate
- 31:04Speaker 1: flag with the cherry blossoms on it, and YadA, YadA, YadA,
- 31:09Speaker 1: and he you know, it's this is all like representative
- 31:15Speaker 1: of the fact that anything is possible. And eventually we
- 31:21Speaker 1: have the horrible scene where Chopper is healed and he
- 31:25Speaker 1: kicks him out, and this is again, why did you
- 31:31Speaker 1: kick him out? Because the horrible shock of watching me
- 31:34Speaker 1: die would have been too much for him. Oh, it's
- 31:38Speaker 1: a much less horrible shock to have your friend and
- 31:42Speaker 1: guardian who you thought cared about you turn you out
- 31:46Speaker 1: with no warning and let you think it's your fault
- 31:51Speaker 1: and that you did something wrong, so that you wonder
- 31:57Speaker 1: why they don't want you after having been rejected by
- 32:02Speaker 1: all of the humans in town, by your own herd
- 32:06Speaker 1: because you have a blue nose. It's it's so much
- 32:10Speaker 1: better for him to be rejected again by you and
- 32:15Speaker 1: made to feel utterly worthless again. Great call, you fucking asshole,
- 32:22Speaker 1: you imbecile. Like the idea that this guy means well
- 32:28Speaker 1: is inscene to me. This is just such It's so
- 32:32Speaker 1: poorly reasoned. I hate it. I the scene where Chopper
- 32:36Speaker 1: is banging on the door saying, what did I do?
- 32:39Speaker 1: I sir, you are I hope in hell? You deserve
- 32:46Speaker 1: to be in hell for this. This is so disgusting.
- 32:50Speaker 1: I hate him, I hate him, I just fucking hate him.
- 32:53Speaker 1: So eventually we have doctor Ring coming to see him,
- 33:00Speaker 1: and she just says, you're a goner, no bedside man
- 33:03Speaker 1: or whatsoever. And he doesn't deserve it, so I'm not man,
- 33:07Speaker 1: and he falls to his knees, talking about won't you
- 33:11Speaker 1: look up the like, continue my research and take care
- 33:15Speaker 1: of Chopper, And she's like, why would I do that?
- 33:18Speaker 1: You're trying to play on my sympathy because you're dying
- 33:20Speaker 1: and I'm not falling for it. I don't want to
- 33:23Speaker 1: do any of this. Your research is garbage. Chopper is
- 33:27Speaker 1: a pet who you, by the way, kicked out, so
- 33:29Speaker 1: caring for him, why are you trying to pretend you
- 33:31Speaker 1: give a shit like And Chopper, who is watching all
- 33:38Speaker 1: of this through a hole in the roof overhears him
- 33:42Speaker 1: talking about how everybody is so desperate for a cure
- 33:48Speaker 1: because they don't have doctors available to them anymore, that
- 33:51Speaker 1: they are going into the death valley and looking for
- 33:55Speaker 1: this like mythical mushroom that is supposed to be able
- 33:58Speaker 1: to cure anything. And Horeha is just like talking about
- 34:05Speaker 1: everybody's a sucker, you know. But he says, you need
- 34:09Speaker 1: to be kinder because folks have lost hope and they're
- 34:12Speaker 1: just like trying to hold on to something that might
- 34:16Speaker 1: be able to help them. What the fuck else are
- 34:18Speaker 1: they supposed to do? And Chopper decides, all right, I
- 34:24Speaker 1: know what I can do I'm going to go and
- 34:26Speaker 1: find this mushroom. And so we have a sequence of
- 34:34Speaker 1: Hero look feverishly working for the few days that he
- 34:37Speaker 1: has left, trying to make something, which eventually he does
- 34:42Speaker 1: manage to like get a reaction and it's this like
- 34:45Speaker 1: sparkly pink liquid and he starts calling for Chopper and
- 34:50Speaker 1: then is like all sad when Chopper's not there, and
- 34:53Speaker 1: I'm just like, no, you don't get to be sad.
- 34:55Speaker 1: You don't get to be sad Chopper's not there, dude,
- 34:57Speaker 1: what are you fucking Are you kidding me? And then
- 35:01Speaker 1: Chopper opens the door and comes in covered in blood
- 35:05Speaker 1: and cuts don't know what he went through, but he
- 35:09Speaker 1: found a mushroom, which he is assuming is the mushroom,
- 35:15Speaker 1: and I just don't like that I have to watch
- 35:20Speaker 1: Chopper sobbing crying more than once in this episode, and
- 35:24Speaker 1: I have to see him horribly injured more than once
- 35:28Speaker 1: in this episode. So he comes in and he's like,
- 35:32Speaker 1: I found the mushroom, and here a luck is like
- 35:35Speaker 1: I could tell you that this mushroom is poison and
- 35:38Speaker 1: that you did all of this for nothing, and that
- 35:39Speaker 1: I am going to die anyway, which is tough to
- 35:43Speaker 1: hear but also factually correct. Or I could pretend that
- 35:50Speaker 1: you found a cure and drink it and let you
- 35:55Speaker 1: think that you cured me and then go off, knowing
- 36:01Speaker 1: you will eventually figure out that this is poisonous and
- 36:07Speaker 1: live the rest of your life feeling like you hastened
- 36:12Speaker 1: my death. There's no way that he doesn't think that Chopper,
- 36:22Speaker 1: like he has to know Chopper will figure it out.
- 36:26Speaker 1: So he puts on a big show on how he's
- 36:31Speaker 1: feeling so much better that mushroom tasted terrible, but that's
- 36:36Speaker 1: how you know it's medicine, and packs up a bunch
- 36:39Speaker 1: of stuff and heads to the castle, saying that he
- 36:44Speaker 1: is going to help those sick physicians, and he has
- 36:48Speaker 1: packed a bunch of explosive to get him inside if
- 36:54Speaker 1: he needs it, which Chopper just sort of doesn't know
- 36:59Speaker 1: what to make of this, which I really understand. And
- 37:03Speaker 1: later on Corey had comes in and is like have
- 37:05Speaker 1: you seen him? And Chopper's like, he went to the
- 37:07Speaker 1: castle to help the sick doctors, and she's like what,
- 37:11Speaker 1: and he's like yeah, and she's like he's sick, what
- 37:14Speaker 1: is he? And then Chopper says, it's fine, I cured
- 37:18Speaker 1: him with the mushroom and she says, what mushrooms show me,
- 37:22Speaker 1: and we get the whole reveal of the fact that
- 37:25Speaker 1: this mushroom in this book has the skull and crossbones
- 37:29Speaker 1: next to it, and that means that anything is possible,
- 37:33Speaker 1: and it doesn't like Corey does not soften this at all.
- 37:38Speaker 1: She just screams, you idiot. That means it's lethal. He
- 37:42Speaker 1: drank poison. He's gonna die within like an hour. And
- 37:48Speaker 1: so we have another sequence of Chopper crying and sobbing
- 37:53Speaker 1: and saying no, no, no, and uh, I kind of
- 37:58Speaker 1: skipped over the bit where he's like Heroics says something
- 38:01Speaker 1: about pirates and Choppers like, what's a pirate? So we
- 38:04Speaker 1: have them like on the shore talking about what a
- 38:06Speaker 1: pirate is. But we go to hero Luck who has
- 38:12Speaker 1: come to the castle and it's a kind of an
- 38:19Speaker 1: interesting scene because, like the rumor that has been circulating
- 38:25Speaker 1: about how all the doctors are sick, you know, he
- 38:29Speaker 1: has fully fallen for this and as they're bringing him in,
- 38:34Speaker 1: they're saying, like, the rogue doctor is here, so it's
- 38:37Speaker 1: clear they have been looking for him specifically. But he
- 38:43Speaker 1: also has explosives, which he claimed. We're like to get
- 38:47Speaker 1: him here. But a part of me is like, what
- 38:53Speaker 1: was he thinking that, like, I can cure these doctors
- 38:56Speaker 1: and then I can blow the rest of the place up.
- 38:59Speaker 1: I guess he says that they were to help him
- 39:01Speaker 1: get in, which maybe maybe I don't know. Man, well whatever,
- 39:08Speaker 1: So it is revealed that none of the doctors are sick,
- 39:14Speaker 1: and this is what confused me, the fact that this
- 39:18Speaker 1: is like Woppole has circulated this rumor. Wopole seems really
- 39:24Speaker 1: confused at the fact that this guy thinks the doctors
- 39:27Speaker 1: are sick. He's like looking at him, like, what the
- 39:32Speaker 1: fuck are you talking about? And it's like, as you
- 39:34Speaker 1: can see, nobody here is sick. So it almost feels
- 39:39Speaker 1: like Wohpole, maybe it's supposed to be that, like one
- 39:43Speaker 1: of his people made up the rumor and Wopole doesn't
- 39:46Speaker 1: realize that that's what like the method that they have
- 39:49Speaker 1: been using. I think that's part of what was confusing
- 39:53Speaker 1: to me. And I correct me if I'm right, If
- 39:56Speaker 1: correct me, if I'm right, My God, correct me if
- 39:58Speaker 1: I'm wrong. I have a vague memory of in the
- 40:03Speaker 1: anime there almost being an implication that these doctors were
- 40:08Speaker 1: like willingly staying here like that there was almost an
- 40:15Speaker 1: implication like their ethics were not pure and that they
- 40:20Speaker 1: were compromised somehow, not that this was like against their will.
- 40:27Speaker 1: But I don't remember where I'm getting that from. I
- 40:30Speaker 1: just feel like I thought I could recall a moment
- 40:33Speaker 1: of hero look realizing like, oh, you guys suck too,
- 40:37Speaker 1: like you know, but I might be smooshing together some
- 40:42Speaker 1: other storylines I don't know, but uh so here look.
- 40:48Speaker 1: I love when he finds out that like they're not sick.
- 40:50Speaker 1: He just says, oh, thank god, it was just a trick,
- 40:54Speaker 1: which is honestly a great line of being like, I'd
- 40:58Speaker 1: rather be tricked than for every doctor to be sick.
- 41:01Speaker 1: That's better, So you know. Florian says, I had to
- 41:07Speaker 1: pause for like an hour after that scene before I
- 41:09Speaker 1: could keep watching. Yeah, it's awful of Chopper being kicked
- 41:14Speaker 1: out and then Florax. Florian says hero Luck is a
- 41:18Speaker 1: foster dad for kittens with the right heart, but not
- 41:21Speaker 1: capable to handle it. Bernadette says Heroic is a tough
- 41:24Speaker 1: case because he's clearly idealistic but also dumbest shit, which
- 41:28Speaker 1: is why he chooses the wrong option on how to
- 41:30Speaker 1: treat Chopper every time. Florian says, I think they were
- 41:34Speaker 1: man handled into this in the anime as well. Okay, yeah,
- 41:40Speaker 1: it's it's it's a just the sort of thing that like,
- 41:45Speaker 1: I don't I cannot respect or like a character that
- 41:49Speaker 1: is incapable and doesn't realize that they are incapable, doesn't
- 41:53Speaker 1: have any self awareness surrounding that, and so they keep
- 41:56Speaker 1: trying to push their wish on others, which is as
- 42:02Speaker 1: a doctor who doesn't know what he's doing is what
- 42:04Speaker 1: he would be doing, you know, like it's him refusing
- 42:10Speaker 1: to face facts, and so he's the foil to Koreija,
- 42:14Speaker 1: who is all facts all the time. Now, Koreja can
- 42:21Speaker 1: certainly feel really brutal and abrasive, but any time I
- 42:27Speaker 1: would rather deal with her fucking anytime. And I just like,
- 42:33Speaker 1: there's no logic to this man whatsoever. So once he
- 42:42Speaker 1: realizes that he has been tricked, there's a little bit
- 42:47Speaker 1: of back and forth here where Wapole instructs Dalton to
- 42:51Speaker 1: shoot this guy, and Dalton lifts his gun but clearly
- 42:57Speaker 1: doesn't want to do it, and then hero Loic makes
- 43:02Speaker 1: a speech about how a man is only dead once
- 43:07Speaker 1: he is forgotten, and it's like, honestly not great. It's
- 43:15Speaker 1: the sort of speech that I feel like sounds like
- 43:17Speaker 1: something until you think about it, and it's I understand
- 43:20Speaker 1: the theory of that, and that is the reason for
- 43:23Speaker 1: like a friendas and stuff, like the whole plot of
- 43:28Speaker 1: Oh my god, what was the name of the movie. Guys,
- 43:30Speaker 1: there's a movie, a Pixar movie based on da did
- 43:34Speaker 1: those smartphos And it's like, so emotional, guy, it's so
- 43:37Speaker 1: good Coco, right, Coco? I feel like, yes, now who
- 43:41Speaker 1: I says? Okay? So like the idea of like you're
- 43:48Speaker 1: not actually gone until nobody remembers you. I actually like
- 43:54Speaker 1: that as an idea. But this dude is so full
- 44:00Speaker 1: of shit on every level that I cannot take any
- 44:02Speaker 1: big moment of his seriously because I hate him so
- 44:05Speaker 1: much for everything that he has done. At Chopper bro
- 44:08Speaker 1: almost died in the fucking Valley of Death for your
- 44:13Speaker 1: worthless ass after you kicked him out, and then you
- 44:16Speaker 1: had the nerve to try and get kure, had to
- 44:18Speaker 1: take care of him. What are you doing. You're not
- 44:21Speaker 1: taking care of him. You kicked him out? Are you serious? Ugh? Anyway,
- 44:29Speaker 1: So this whole speech, it's meant to be this moment
- 44:34Speaker 1: of like talking about how there can still be hope left,
- 44:39Speaker 1: which gets through to Dalton, who is very emotional, and
- 44:42Speaker 1: he's like, what about for a kingdom? Could that be
- 44:48Speaker 1: true of the king of a kingdom as well? And
- 44:53Speaker 1: I just really want to be like Dalton, don't listen
- 44:56Speaker 1: to this, don't fall for this. But Dalton needs hope.
- 45:00Speaker 1: You know, he's in the same boat as many of
- 45:05Speaker 1: the other people like that are down in town, which
- 45:08Speaker 1: she eventually goes to. But uh, yeah, he is looking
- 45:13Speaker 1: for anything. And that is the danger with folks like
- 45:17Speaker 1: hero Look is when people don't have anywhere else to
- 45:22Speaker 1: turn and they need somebody to tell them it's all
- 45:25Speaker 1: going to be okay. You can find someone, and I
- 45:29Speaker 1: like they can mean well, they can, they can have
- 45:35Speaker 1: good intentions, and they can actually believe in what they're selling.
- 45:39Speaker 1: They don't have to be a real con artist. They
- 45:44Speaker 1: can just be misguided. And I would argue misguided is
- 45:49Speaker 1: so much more dangerous, and I just don't want to
- 45:55Speaker 1: see this happening too. It's almost like having compared Woppole
- 46:02Speaker 1: to Trump already and comparing hero Look to like anti vaxers.
- 46:10Speaker 1: It feels like that of like, I need to seize
- 46:15Speaker 1: any element of my life that I can pretend I
- 46:19Speaker 1: have control over, and you kind of obsess over this.
- 46:25Speaker 1: So yeah, now I'm an anti vaxer too, and uh
- 46:29Speaker 1: anti woke and you know whatever. So he eventually uses
- 46:37Speaker 1: a couple of these explosives to blow himself up, but
- 46:42Speaker 1: before he does, he says to Dalton, a monster is coming,
- 46:50Speaker 1: Please don't hurt him. He's my son. Blows himself up.
- 46:58Speaker 1: Woppole is not off enough at Dalton at this point.
- 47:04Speaker 1: If Dalton had just shot him the way he was
- 47:07Speaker 1: told to do more than once, this dude could not
- 47:10Speaker 1: have blown the place to bits and caused the trouble
- 47:15Speaker 1: that he does, so, Honestly, the fact that Woppol doesn't
- 47:18Speaker 1: immediately hold Dalton in contempt is kind of surprising. He's like,
- 47:25Speaker 1: go and find the monster and kill it, And I'm
- 47:27Speaker 1: just like, you relying on this guy to do that
- 47:30Speaker 1: as stupid. You're dumb, Woppole. He's not gonna do it.
- 47:32Speaker 1: You just saw how he doesn't care about your orders.
- 47:36Speaker 1: But I also, of course want Dalton to be the
- 47:39Speaker 1: one to go down there and handle it, because I
- 47:41Speaker 1: know he won't hurt Chopper, so I don't want Chopper hurt,
- 47:45Speaker 1: so he goes downstairs and Chopper is just coming in
- 47:50Speaker 1: and transforms into his creepy human faced form and he
- 47:57Speaker 1: tries to get past Dalton and he can't it, and
- 48:01Speaker 1: Dalton says, if you can't even beat me, you have
- 48:04Speaker 1: no chance against all the other dudes in there. And
- 48:10Speaker 1: Chopper has just seen Herolok's like top hat flutter down,
- 48:16Speaker 1: so he knows Heroic is dead, and Dalton says to him, like,
- 48:26Speaker 1: you know, he calls that he calls hero Louck Chopper's father,
- 48:34Speaker 1: and is like, go back your father, That's what your
- 48:38Speaker 1: father would have wanted. And I don't know if it's
- 48:44Speaker 1: like clear when he says that that hero Louk called
- 48:47Speaker 1: Chopper his son or what, but uh, it seems like
- 48:51Speaker 1: Chopper is interpreting it, Like the look on his face
- 48:54Speaker 1: is that he understands that if he is calling him that,
- 48:58Speaker 1: then that must be you know, there must have been
- 49:01Speaker 1: some conversation. And so Chopper does desist, but he is
- 49:09Speaker 1: just like grief stricken of course, because he thought he
- 49:14Speaker 1: had cured this guy and that he was going to
- 49:16Speaker 1: be able to keep living with him and learn how
- 49:18Speaker 1: to do medicine from him and that he had found
- 49:21Speaker 1: something that could cure anything, and so everybody was going
- 49:24Speaker 1: to be saved. Like he was riding this enormous high
- 49:29Speaker 1: because Heroic wouldn't tell him the truth, and then once
- 49:34Speaker 1: again just fucking abandons him and leaves him to fend
- 49:39Speaker 1: entirely for himself with like the horrible realizations of what
- 49:44Speaker 1: was really going on. And I will never forgive this guy,
- 49:49Speaker 1: and I hate him, and I never want to hear
- 49:53Speaker 1: his name again. Any time he comes up, I just
- 49:56Speaker 1: get angry. There's been precious little of it, so that's good.
- 50:01Speaker 1: But you know, in the anime, every now and then
- 50:04Speaker 1: we'll have a moment of like Chopper thinking back to him,
- 50:06Speaker 1: and I just want to be like, oh, Chopper, no, baby,
- 50:09Speaker 1: you deserve so much better than everybody you were like
- 50:14Speaker 1: raised by. Essentially, you know. Florian says, I think it
- 50:20Speaker 1: has been said at the time while covering the anime
- 50:22Speaker 1: about here looks Wonder. It's more meant to be metaphorical,
- 50:26Speaker 1: even though it's quite literally portrayed healing one's soul. Some
- 50:30Speaker 1: people will also think about this as a mental health thing.
- 50:32Speaker 1: It was never really clear to me Wonder equals medicine.
- 50:37Speaker 1: That's the thing is that it is one thing for
- 50:42Speaker 1: it to be a metaphorical thing if we're actually going
- 50:46Speaker 1: to like do that, but we're not. It's all literal,
- 50:49Speaker 1: and so it just is like you can incorporate the
- 50:57Speaker 1: importance of caring for one in more ways than just
- 51:01Speaker 1: the physical into medical practice without it being this complete horseshit,
- 51:09Speaker 1: without it being I had a faith healer tell me
- 51:12Speaker 1: I was cured, because like you had one guy tell
- 51:15Speaker 1: you were cured, and apparently just like believed him, which
- 51:20Speaker 1: why why no second opinion after just seeing It's just
- 51:28Speaker 1: I get what we're trying to do. That's what's so
- 51:30Speaker 1: annoying about it. I get what we're what we're trying
- 51:35Speaker 1: to do, but it's not even true in the show.
- 51:41Speaker 1: The implication to me is that hero Luck dies because
- 51:45Speaker 1: he is still sick with whatever it was that he
- 51:47Speaker 1: had and the person was full of shit who told
- 51:52Speaker 1: him that he was cured. So this whole thing with
- 51:55Speaker 1: like wonder equals medicine isn't even true in the show.
- 52:00Speaker 1: And he's selling it as like an absolute to Chopper
- 52:04Speaker 1: because he's lying to Chopper about being well, like he
- 52:09Speaker 1: won't you know, it's all him completely in denial in
- 52:15Speaker 1: himself and hiding the truth from Chopper in order to
- 52:22Speaker 1: force this thing to be real, which it's never actually
- 52:28Speaker 1: even real in the show at all, you know, Bernadette says,
- 52:35Speaker 1: he no, I know, he actually dies from something else.
- 52:37Speaker 1: The thing that was cured was a heart problem, Okay,
- 52:43Speaker 1: is it? I don't know, man Like for me, that's
- 52:47Speaker 1: the subtext, but I don't remember, like honestly how specific
- 52:52Speaker 1: they get in the anime. Florien says, I always wondered,
- 52:55Speaker 1: is his sickness he has here the same that he
- 52:57Speaker 1: had before. It's never clearly stated, not the manga or
- 53:00Speaker 1: anywhere as far as I know. And then Florian is
- 53:03Speaker 1: responding to Bernadette, was that said, I think it's always
- 53:06Speaker 1: just quote a sickness, Nehua says, I'm not sure it's
- 53:10Speaker 1: specified at all. So yeah, that's like I really my
- 53:15Speaker 1: takeaway has been that he was lied to and he
- 53:20Speaker 1: is now dying from the thing he was told was cured,
- 53:26Speaker 1: and it you know, somebody just like even if he
- 53:33Speaker 1: like bought himself some time through a wonderful moment of beauty,
- 53:38Speaker 1: that's not nothing, but it's still not what he is
- 53:42Speaker 1: trying to tell Chopper happened, and it look I am.
- 53:51Speaker 1: I think, when it just comes down to it, there
- 53:54Speaker 1: are a lot of things in this universe that are
- 53:59Speaker 1: exaggerated and over the top, and I understand that I
- 54:06Speaker 1: can't be literal about a lot of it, But this show,
- 54:12Speaker 1: when it comes to like medicine, it's sort of all
- 54:15Speaker 1: over the place. We have, you know, people who have
- 54:19Speaker 1: these horrible injuries that are like totally healed up quite
- 54:24Speaker 1: quickly a lot of the time in the anime, but
- 54:28Speaker 1: then we'll have illnesses that folks can't recover from. We
- 54:32Speaker 1: Havenami with an actual IV and you know, she needs
- 54:37Speaker 1: to take antibiotics and get bed rests, which is a
- 54:40Speaker 1: very like real thing. And so it's like sort of
- 54:47Speaker 1: inconsistent enough that I tend to hand wave anything that
- 54:53Speaker 1: is like a physical injury as being like, Okay, well
- 54:58Speaker 1: we're gonna let that be like fixed, and anything that
- 55:02Speaker 1: is some sort of internal illness I take more seriously
- 55:08Speaker 1: as the show seems to be like if somebody has
- 55:11Speaker 1: a disease of some kind, that's going to be a
- 55:15Speaker 1: really different situation. And so I'm just like unwilling to
- 55:22Speaker 1: believe that he's right that this fucking these these flower pedals.
- 55:29Speaker 1: Seeing them was so beautiful that it cured him. I
- 55:32Speaker 1: just I just don't feel that makes sense, even in
- 55:40Speaker 1: this world where crazy stuff is true all the time.
- 55:44Speaker 1: It's just so it's just, you know, and maybe I'm
- 55:50Speaker 1: just wrong about that, And maybe it's as simple as that.
- 55:54Speaker 1: Maybe it's like, I hate Heiro Looks so much for
- 56:01Speaker 1: the way that he treats Chopper that I am not
- 56:06Speaker 1: willing to give him the benefit of the doubt on anything,
- 56:10Speaker 1: which it could just be that kind of bitch eating
- 56:13Speaker 1: cracker situation. It may be that simple. If so, I
- 56:18Speaker 1: don't apologize, he sucks enough that I think he deserves
- 56:22Speaker 1: all of the skepticism I'm giving him. You know, Sorry,
- 56:29Speaker 1: Florian says. Bernadette is our in house biologist, so I
- 56:34Speaker 1: trust also her word. If it was said, yeah, well
- 56:38Speaker 1: that is what it took out Roger in a way
- 56:41Speaker 1: about the diseases and sickness. Oh yes, right, because he
- 56:46Speaker 1: basically lets himself get caught and executed is the implication
- 56:51Speaker 1: that we find out eventually, So Bernadette is I am
- 57:00Speaker 1: currently rechecking. I just love that I have got you
- 57:03Speaker 1: guys over here as my little It's like being Jon
- 57:09Speaker 1: Stewart on the Daily Show with his little earpiece going
- 57:11Speaker 1: what's that? Oh, I'm hearing that such and such, like
- 57:15Speaker 1: I love it. I've got y'all on the job. Appreciate you.
- 57:21Speaker 1: So when Chopper goes back to the Hut, he comes
- 57:25Speaker 1: across doctor Rene looking at a bunch of the research
- 57:32Speaker 1: and picking up a vial of like the pink powder
- 57:36Speaker 1: and going interesting, like maybe he had been onto something
- 57:40Speaker 1: of some kind. And Chopper comes in and demands that
- 57:48Speaker 1: she teach him everything she knows, to which she goes,
- 57:53Speaker 1: why would I do that? Which is extremely funny to
- 57:56Speaker 1: me her, just like because the expectation in a scene
- 57:59Speaker 1: like this, especially when it's a woman character, because we
- 58:02Speaker 1: always expect a woman to be a caretaker, you know,
- 58:06Speaker 1: is to just be like, oh, of course, I'll teach
- 58:08Speaker 1: you everything. And I just love her being like I
- 58:13Speaker 1: have shit to do. I don't have time for a
- 58:17Speaker 1: fucking med student right now. And eventually Chopper convinces her,
- 58:26Speaker 1: and you know, the rest is history. He comes to
- 58:30Speaker 1: stay with her and she has been teaching him as
- 58:34Speaker 1: much as she can, and you know, he's picking it up.
- 58:40Speaker 1: As we saw, he is still in his infancy. I
- 58:46Speaker 1: hate saying that because he's so little, but you know
- 58:49Speaker 1: what I mean. But still, Bernadette says it might have
- 58:52Speaker 1: been because of the translation I read. Florian says, I
- 58:56Speaker 1: think that might be in the German version. The heart
- 58:59Speaker 1: thing is ringing about in the back of my head. Interesting.
- 59:03Speaker 1: That's sort of compelling to me, the idea that like
- 59:05Speaker 1: a different translation is going to have it the implication
- 59:09Speaker 1: will be very different as well. I'm sure that people
- 59:12Speaker 1: translating didn't realize how that changes things in this way.
- 59:20Speaker 1: But yeah, very very interesting. Okay, So when we come
- 59:28Speaker 1: back to the present and Korea has finished her soup,
- 59:33Speaker 1: asked Sanji if he wants to live in this giant
- 59:36Speaker 1: castle with her as his personal chef. As her personal chef,
- 59:40Speaker 1: I love Soanji's like, you know what, I'm good. His
- 59:45Speaker 1: face is so funny. I also, anytime that we come
- 59:49Speaker 1: back from this story, Sanji's the one that's like got
- 59:51Speaker 1: tears in his eyes. You know, it's not that everybody
- 59:54Speaker 1: else isn't affected by it, but he's definitely the most
- 59:57Speaker 1: emotionally responsive and it's very cute. So loofy. After hearing this,
- 1:00:06Speaker 1: he finishes his soup and he goes back into that
- 1:00:10Speaker 1: other room and picks up the pirate flag out of
- 1:00:13Speaker 1: the trunk, prompting Chopper to appear out of nowhere as
- 1:00:18Speaker 1: if he was watching on a ring camera in the
- 1:00:20Speaker 1: next room and yell at him again just like I
- 1:00:24Speaker 1: told you not to fuck around with that. What are
- 1:00:28Speaker 1: you doing? And Lufy says, I respect all pirate flags
- 1:00:34Speaker 1: and this needs to be hung, and he uses his
- 1:00:40Speaker 1: gum gum ability to hang it up and displays the
- 1:00:45Speaker 1: fact that he is also not normal to Chopper as
- 1:00:50Speaker 1: he does so, and Chopper is looking at him like
- 1:00:54Speaker 1: wait what and he says, yeah, that's right, I'm a
- 1:00:58Speaker 1: monster too. Is an great? Ah, you guys. I really
- 1:01:06Speaker 1: feel like that's where this episode should have ended. I
- 1:01:09Speaker 1: understand the structure narratively of having having the ending be
- 1:01:20Speaker 1: a moment of oh no, what will happen now, so
- 1:01:23Speaker 1: that you want to immediately watch the next episode. I
- 1:01:26Speaker 1: definitely get that, but this episode was such a fucking bummer.
- 1:01:30Speaker 1: I feel like we needed to end on a little
- 1:01:33Speaker 1: bit of a high note, you know, just have Dalton
- 1:01:37Speaker 1: getting shot and captured the scene before, and then end
- 1:01:41Speaker 1: on this one with Lufy saying isn't it great? And
- 1:01:45Speaker 1: it just feels like we're getting to go out on
- 1:01:48Speaker 1: a little bit more of a high note than we've been.
- 1:01:52Speaker 1: Then we've been given the rest of the episode, but
- 1:01:58Speaker 1: you know, what can you do? So next episode is
- 1:02:03Speaker 1: the final episode. I am really curious, y'all because the
- 1:02:10Speaker 1: fact that I know that Joe manage Leone said I
- 1:02:15Speaker 1: say his name, I never know that he was cast
- 1:02:18Speaker 1: as mister Zero aka Crocodile. That indicates he's gonna have
- 1:02:28Speaker 1: to be in the season. I don't know when we're
- 1:02:33Speaker 1: gonna get that, because this storyline with Chopper just needs
- 1:02:37Speaker 1: to be resolved before we can move on. So I'm
- 1:02:40Speaker 1: not expecting to even get to Alabasta this season, and
- 1:02:44Speaker 1: so I'm trying. I like, don't remember if he turns
- 1:02:47Speaker 1: up early or what happens. Sorry, uh, Bernadette says, does it?
- 1:02:55Speaker 1: Why would we tell you that. I'm not asking you
- 1:02:58Speaker 1: to tell me, but I would say it does simply
- 1:03:02Speaker 1: because Joe Minslioni is such a big name that if
- 1:03:06Speaker 1: they're going to publicize that he was like hired. We
- 1:03:11Speaker 1: haven't even seen mister Zero's face. We've seen like the
- 1:03:14Speaker 1: side profile. That's it. There's not this is a this
- 1:03:20Speaker 1: is an actor well known enough that we're gonna pay
- 1:03:22Speaker 1: him to be off camera almost the whole season. I
- 1:03:26Speaker 1: just don't see that practically being how we handle it.
- 1:03:29Speaker 1: And maybe I am just wrong about that. Maybe it's
- 1:03:32Speaker 1: like we're hiring you on just to do a couple
- 1:03:34Speaker 1: of scenes and then you're really gonna be in it
- 1:03:36Speaker 1: next season. Maybe that's the way that it worked. But
- 1:03:39Speaker 1: I have just kept thinking that, you know, we're going
- 1:03:42Speaker 1: to get more of him, and we really don't get
- 1:03:44Speaker 1: much of him at all. Also, I almost forgot to
- 1:03:49Speaker 1: mention that Vivi spots Robin in the village and it's
- 1:03:54Speaker 1: it's extremely funny because, like, you know, all of the
- 1:03:58Speaker 1: the villagers dressed in like clothing that has been aged
- 1:04:03Speaker 1: and made to look really like rumpled and dirty and
- 1:04:07Speaker 1: repaired a bunch of times, and then you just have
- 1:04:11Speaker 1: Robin in this immaculate cream colored floor length coat, and
- 1:04:18Speaker 1: it's just she just looks insane, you know what I mean.
- 1:04:21Speaker 1: It just she looks great, obviously, but just in the
- 1:04:26Speaker 1: context of that, it is the most her. She's making
- 1:04:31Speaker 1: zero attempt to like be covert at all, And it
- 1:04:35Speaker 1: is very funny. You know. It makes me think there's
- 1:04:38Speaker 1: when I was in Guatemala for a little while there.
- 1:04:41Speaker 1: It was a very weird experience because you would have
- 1:04:44Speaker 1: like this incredible poverty right up against real wealth. And
- 1:04:50Speaker 1: I will never forget this one time. I had been
- 1:04:52Speaker 1: like living in this little town for several weeks at
- 1:04:55Speaker 1: that point, and every morning when I would head out
- 1:04:59Speaker 1: to one of my classes, there was this donkey that
- 1:05:03Speaker 1: was always like pulling a cart in the same spot.
- 1:05:06Speaker 1: It was part of their routine to be going down
- 1:05:08Speaker 1: this one street, and it was a cobbled street, super narrow,
- 1:05:15Speaker 1: the sort of thing that like there were sidewalks, but
- 1:05:18Speaker 1: they were only about a foot and a half wide,
- 1:05:21Speaker 1: and if anybody opened their front door, it was the
- 1:05:23Speaker 1: equivalent of like cycling and somebody opening their car door
- 1:05:26Speaker 1: in front of you, like you better stop or you're
- 1:05:28Speaker 1: just gonna get got in the face. And I was
- 1:05:33Speaker 1: leaving one morning and all of a sudden, this fucking
- 1:05:37Speaker 1: bent not Bentley Mercedes like suv pulled down the road
- 1:05:44Speaker 1: and the donkey had to like get up on the sidewalk,
- 1:05:48Speaker 1: and it was a very tight because there was a
- 1:05:50Speaker 1: cart as well, and the windows were rolled down, so
- 1:05:57Speaker 1: there was this like pulsing music and you could see
- 1:06:01Speaker 1: a couple people in the car that were like clearly
- 1:06:05Speaker 1: had had work done, you know these It was just like,
- 1:06:08Speaker 1: so obviously we have got serious money. And in the
- 1:06:14Speaker 1: context of this cobbled street with a donkey, where I'd
- 1:06:17Speaker 1: never seen like a vehicle newer than nineteen seventy one,
- 1:06:24Speaker 1: it was just so jarring. And the people's faces as well.
- 1:06:30Speaker 1: When you are around like the ordinary folks in this
- 1:06:34Speaker 1: particular area, getting access to just basic dentistry is really rare,
- 1:06:39Speaker 1: so you would have all kinds of skin conditions, weird teeth,
- 1:06:45Speaker 1: just you know, the sort of stuff that a lot
- 1:06:46Speaker 1: of times in the US will simply be corrected from
- 1:06:50Speaker 1: infancy that haven't been dealt with. And then you are
- 1:06:55Speaker 1: faced with somebody who's had plastic surgery and has this
- 1:06:58Speaker 1: unnaturally perfect face with like really intense makeup, and it
- 1:07:03Speaker 1: is like grotesque in this way that I feel is
- 1:07:09Speaker 1: akin to like the way cat and has felt in
- 1:07:11Speaker 1: the Hunger Games, you know, of like, I get used
- 1:07:14Speaker 1: to it quickly coming back to the US and looking
- 1:07:17Speaker 1: around at what is standardized as what we expect people
- 1:07:20Speaker 1: to look like. But at first when I came back,
- 1:07:25Speaker 1: everything felt so fake to me, and it was very unsettling,
- 1:07:30Speaker 1: how like that was simply the norm, and to me
- 1:07:35Speaker 1: it looked so creepy as to be almost alien. And
- 1:07:41Speaker 1: there is like an element of that here with like
- 1:07:44Speaker 1: Robin is so beautiful and she's in this incredible outfit,
- 1:07:48Speaker 1: but in the context of where she is, she looks
- 1:07:53Speaker 1: like a freak. You know. It's just the sort of
- 1:07:56Speaker 1: thing of like, I uh wouldn't be mad if the
- 1:08:01Speaker 1: people around her were just like, the fuck is she
- 1:08:04Speaker 1: doing here? Read the room, Go get something appropriate to wear?
- 1:08:10Speaker 1: What is this? So anyway, I'm going to wrap, but
- 1:08:17Speaker 1: apologies for being late, and apologies for hating this episode
- 1:08:21Speaker 1: so much, But it's not my fault. It's here it
- 1:08:24Speaker 1: looks fault, and that's just I'm glad he's dead and
- 1:08:29Speaker 1: I am not looking forward to having to see all
