- 1:02And if you're looking for that type of contact, make sure to
- 1:05subscribe. So today I want to talk about,
- 1:07I've been traveling now for like 2 weeks like crazy and I really
- 1:13want to talk about traveling because I know I've talked to so
- 1:15many people that they're like, you know, traveling was one of
- 1:18the things that I didn't want to give up.
- 1:20And I'm like, well, what do you mean you didn't want to give it
- 1:22up? Did you give it up?
- 1:24So I think that we have to tackle this and know again, this
- 1:29is life, this is a, you know, the good, the bad and the
- 1:33reality. So let's talk about it.
- 1:34I've been travelling a lot lately.
- 1:35And so it gave me some real and not to me inside.
- 1:37I mean, I knew it all. I know it all.
- 1:39Of course, I know it all. I mean, come on, I'm just, Oh my
- 1:42gosh, I'm just kidding. But you know, but I, you know,
- 1:44I, I travel quite a bit. I've always travelled for work.
- 1:47And so, you know, I've always had these things.
- 1:48But today or this past couple weeks, as I was doing it, I just
- 1:52kept kind of thinking about it, thinking about things that
- 1:54people have asked me. And that's why I want to talk
- 1:56about it. So a lot of people ask me, is it
- 1:59even worth traveling anymore? Well, see, Parkinson's can make
- 2:02even a trip to the grocery store feel like an expedition, right?
- 2:05So packing up and hitting the road might sound impossible.
- 2:08But here's the thing, I refuse let Parkinson's clip my wings.
- 2:12Travel is still one of the best ways to make memories.
- 2:15It's the best way to stay connected to family and friends.
- 2:17And I feel like I'm still living life.
- 2:19I'm just not managing this disease right.
- 2:23So I just got back from a trip last week and and let me tell
- 2:26you, it was a mixed bag of triumphs and fails.
- 2:28And let me start with the fails the airport.
- 2:31You'd think that all this time I'd I'd have it down to a
- 2:33science. After all this time I'd have it
- 2:35down to a science. But let's just say standing in
- 2:37line for 30 minutes while my legs were playing freeze tag
- 2:40wasn't exactly fun. Add in the fun of trying to
- 2:43trying to juggle my carry ONS, my meds and all my ID and you've
- 2:47got a recipe for a one man circus.
- 2:50But here's a triumph. I made it.
- 2:53I figured out my own rhythm, like giving myself extra time,
- 2:56asking for assistance when I needed it, and not being afraid
- 2:59to laugh at the small stuff. Parkinson's is not Parkinson's
- 3:04is not travel is unpredicted part.
- 3:07What the heck am I trying to say here?
- 3:08Parkinson's or not, That's what I want to say.
- 3:10Parkinson's or not, travel is unpredictable and that's half
- 3:14the adventure, right? I mean, I sometimes get into the
- 3:17craziest adventures just because of things that I were
- 3:19unexpectedly happened to me, and they always do.
- 3:23That's my cartoon life that I live.
- 3:24But anyway, let's talk practical.
- 3:27So here are some top travel tips that keep me moving forward,
- 3:30literally and figuratively #1 tip #1 medication.
- 3:34First, I always pack my medication in my carry on and I
- 3:37bring extra enough for at least a few extra days in case of
- 3:40delays. Now why do I do that?
- 3:44It's pretty obvious, isn't it? Have you ever had your, have you
- 3:47ever had your luggage not arrive with you on time?
- 3:50Can you imagine if you only had enough Lemidopa or enough of
- 3:53your medication to get you through a day or two in your
- 3:56carry on and then you're now what do you do when you're
- 3:58scrambling to get medication? So I always carry it in my my
- 4:03carry on. So what I do is I pack all my
- 4:05medication, everything I take in one big Ziploc bag.
- 4:08And I just do that in case they ever want to look through it.
- 4:11And you have to make sure that you, when you're carrying
- 4:13medication, you have to have your original bottles right,
- 4:16with the prescription on it. So you know, the, the pill cap
- 4:20timer I have, I make sure that I have that empty right?
- 4:25And I keep everything just in case, just in case so I can
- 4:27prove that it's an actual prescription.
- 4:29So I carry all that in this big zip on or zip, you know, zip bag
- 4:34or whatever. And inside my carry on, like
- 4:37deep inside my carry on. And then it I use a backpack and
- 4:41then the, the closest pockets where I can reach is where I
- 4:44carry my meds for that day or for the trip so that I don't
- 4:47have to go into my big giant bag of meds to get out my levodopa.
- 4:51And I don't, I just going to reach for it and it's very easy
- 4:53and convenient. And then I don't mess up all the
- 4:55other stuff as well. So that's my first tip is your
- 4:59medication first make sure you have medication that's the most
- 5:01important thing and cap pack in your carry on and pack your
- 5:04separately the the medication you're going to use on the plane
- 5:09and in the airport to all of your medication.
- 5:12All right, tip #2 extra time equals extra calm.
- 5:18You know, whether it's airports, train stations, or just getting
- 5:21to your hotel, give yourself more time than you think you're
- 5:24going to need. It helps with stress.
- 5:25And stress makes symptoms worse. We know that, right?
- 5:28Stress makes symptoms worse. So don't do things that are
- 5:32going to add stress. And this one I'm telling you,
- 5:35not from a a not from a like this is the way I roll stance,
- 5:41but more from a, you know, do what I say, not what I do
- 5:47because I'm the worst. I try to, I don't want to be at
- 5:49the airport very long. So I try to make it just in
- 5:53time. But I'm realizing that that is
- 5:55not working for me that well anymore because with delays,
- 5:59with going through security delays and you know, even even
- 6:03traffic delays on the way to the airport, I'm putting a lot of
- 6:06stress in myself and to get there and I'm running, I'm
- 6:08trying to find my gate. So I'm going to be very
- 6:11diligent. And I'd ask you to as well to
- 6:13take your time, stay calm. The more time you take, the
- 6:16calmer it's going to be, right. OK, all right.
- 6:19So I'm going to write that one down.
- 6:20I need to do tip number 22. So let's do that together.
- 6:24And how about you? Are you like a last minute to
- 6:27the airport kind of person or are you the person that wants to
- 6:29get there, you know, hours in advance?
- 6:31My wife and I are completely different.
- 6:32So when we travel together, it's really different, you know,
- 6:36because I like to be just in time.
- 6:37She likes to be there, I don't know, hours and hours and hours
- 6:41before a flight just to be safe. So what are you put it in the
- 6:44comments? I'd love to hear.
- 6:45I'd love to kind of see how many last minuters we have and how
- 6:49many people that that are well prepared in advance.
- 6:53OK, that was tip #2, tip #3 don't be afraid to ask for help.
- 6:57Now. It's a big one because I'm
- 6:58always the one that never wanted to ask.
- 7:00I'll figure it out, but don't be afraid to ask, you know, whether
- 7:04it's a wheelchair at the airport or a helping hand from a friend,
- 7:08it's not a sign of weakness. It's a sign of smart planning.
- 7:10And you know you can, if you're flying, you can call ahead to
- 7:13your to your airline and they can arrange if you want.
- 7:17You know, if you're going to have trouble walking or it's
- 7:18going to be a long walk, You know, if you're catching, what
- 7:21do you call it? Again, if you're going from, you
- 7:23know, it was not a direct flight, so you can call ahead
- 7:27and the airport will supply a wheelchair for you when you get
- 7:31there and they'll have it at the ramp when you get off.
- 7:32So you know what? And you're kind of thinking
- 7:34like, well, I don't want to be pushed around in a wheelchair.
- 7:36You know what, there's some days I really wish I was pushed
- 7:37around the wheelchair having to make my way through the airport.
- 7:40So don't be afraid to ask. Just suck it up and do it.
- 7:43It's so much easier to ask where something is or how something
- 7:46works or if we can get some help than it is struggling through
- 7:49it. OK.
- 7:51And then tip #4 you have to be flexible.
- 7:54Things might not go perfectly and that's OK except that you
- 7:58have to accept that hiccups are all part of the journey and
- 8:00focus on the experience and not the speed bump.
- 8:02You know, that's the big thing. You know, I always say, like
- 8:05wherever you are, be there. So focus on the experience.
- 8:08You never know, like delays used to drive me bananas.
- 8:11They would drive me absolutely bananas.
- 8:13Just say I don't want to sit in an airport.
- 8:14I don't want to wait for this delay to be over.
- 8:16But you know, there's always opportunity there.
- 8:18Maybe you bump into somebody that or start a conversation
- 8:21that is profound or you know, there's always things you can
- 8:24do. Just keep in where you are and
- 8:27stop worrying about what's what's happening and just worry
- 8:29about, you know, just being you in the situation you're in.
- 8:32So focus on the experiences and not the speed bumps.
- 8:36Okay, listen, Parkinson's is Parkinson's is part of of your
- 8:41journey, but it doesn't get to call the shots.
- 8:43If travel is something that lights you up, then you have to
- 8:46find ways to do it because the memories you make, the laughter
- 8:49you share, and the courage you build along the way, that's what
- 8:53makes worth life worth living. Listen, you know, if you have
- 8:58Parkinson's and you're watching this, don't be afraid to just
- 9:02try it and do it. And you know what, you might be
- 9:04a different type of vacation than you've done before, but
- 9:06different type of trip than you've done before.
- 9:09But I'm such a big believer in pre planning.
- 9:11Just pre plan everything. Plan how long things going to
- 9:14take you and add 30 minutes to it and just try the adventure.
- 9:18And you know what, you might have a day in between where you
- 9:20just going to rest and relax in the hotel room or wherever
- 9:22you're staying. And that's OK.
- 9:24Don't think that you're a burden and you can't do it.
- 9:28So if travelling is something you enjoy, you just do it.
- 9:31My wife and I love going on spontaneous road trips, you
- 9:34know, like we have events that we have to be at and I'd rather
- 9:37drive, We'd rather drive 2435 hours, 36 hours to, to, to our
- 9:42destination and take a few days and, you know, see the
- 9:45countryside and, and experience brand new things, stayed in
- 9:47places we've never stayed before and really make a memory out of
- 9:50it. And that's the thing.
- 9:51So maybe if it's, you know, if driving, if you love to drive on
- 9:54road trips and you can't do it anymore, then it's flying or
- 9:57take a bus or take a train, you know that type of thing.
- 9:59Or you know what, if you are don't want to get on the plane
- 10:02anymore and you're afraid of you know how it's going to be and
- 10:04everything, then try a try a road trip.
- 10:06Just go for it. You know what it's you're,
- 10:09you're going to miss out on a lot of the things that you can
- 10:12still do. And this I was trying to explain
- 10:14this the other day to somebody or somewhere, I can't remember
- 10:17where it was. I think it was on the other
- 10:18podcast and I was saying, I was saying that, you know, we only
- 10:22have so much time, right? And we only have so much good
- 10:25time. And we know this, the
- 10:27Parkinson's is a progressive disorder, right?
- 10:29It's going to get worse. And if you take it's the time
- 10:33now when you can still do some things, worrying about things
- 10:36that you're not going to be able to do down the road or, or you
- 10:40don't want to do because it's different or it's not the same,
- 10:43then you're wasting that time right now when you could still
- 10:46do it. And you might again adjust your
- 10:48how you do it, but you can still do it.
- 10:51And then I promise you this, try to live regret free.
- 10:55You don't want to be at a place in your life where you're now
- 10:58immobile and you're not able to do things.
- 11:01And you look back and say, I should have taken a chance.
- 11:04I should have stopped trying. I should have listened to that
- 11:05guy. I should have listened to that
- 11:07really smart, handsome man that I was following along, you know,
- 11:13on this podcast. And I should have just went for
- 11:16it. So go for it.
- 11:18What's and, and let me know, like just let me know how you're
- 11:21doing. How about this in the comments?
- 11:24What's the place you'd love to go?
- 11:26Right. And when you haven't yet?
- 11:27And then let's start believing together that you're going to do
- 11:30it. And I would say just do it
- 11:31because again, you have to enjoy what you've got.
- 11:35We've got this thing right? We've got it right.
- 11:37We can decide today I'm going to lay on the couch.
- 11:39I'm not going to do anything because it's got me.
- 11:41It doesn't have you. You control it.
