Latest / Inside the Birds: A Philadelphia Eagles Podcast / The DiCecco Daily: Much To Unpack From First Eagles Practice Ahead Of Week 8 vs. Giants
Transcript
- 0:10Speaker 1: Hey, what's going on? Everybody? Welcome into this edition of
- 0:12Speaker 1: the Czech Odily.
- 0:13Speaker 2: It's Andrew Dichecko here on this Wednesday, which means it
- 0:17Speaker 2: was the first day the Eagles had practice, and it
- 0:20Speaker 2: was the first day the Eagles had locker room availability
- 0:23Speaker 2: for the week leading up to the Giants ahead of
- 0:25Speaker 2: their bye week, and lots on pack here. It was
- 0:29Speaker 2: the first day we had a chance to speak to
- 0:32Speaker 2: Eagles edge rusher Brandon Graham.
- 0:35Speaker 1: It was his first practice.
- 0:37Speaker 2: We were able to see practice for about five minutes
- 0:40Speaker 2: or so for the warm up portion of practice, and
- 0:44Speaker 2: he was out there. We'll talk about who wasn't out
- 0:48Speaker 2: there what that could mean. There's some housekeeping items that
- 0:51Speaker 2: we should get out of the way first, and that
- 0:53Speaker 2: is that the Eagles have opened up the twenty one
- 0:55Speaker 2: day practice window for cornerback Jacoran Bennett, and they signed
- 1:01Speaker 2: guards Sua Opeta to the practice squad. Let's unpack what
- 1:05Speaker 2: it means to have Jagorian Bennett back on the practice field.
- 1:10Speaker 1: This is a big addition.
- 1:12Speaker 2: And it may not register to some, but the fact
- 1:17Speaker 2: that the Eagles are really light at corner Jacoreyan Bennett's
- 1:20Speaker 2: always played twenty four defensive snaps, twenty special team snaps,
- 1:25Speaker 2: so there's a lot of unknown. In fact, Vic Vanjoel
- 1:28Speaker 2: on Tuesday mentioned incomplete when asked to evaluate what he's
- 1:32Speaker 2: seen from Jagorean Bennett. Remember, the Eagles acquired Jakoorian in
- 1:37Speaker 2: early August in exchange for defensive tackle Thomas Booker. They
- 1:40Speaker 2: sent him to the Raiders and he was brought in
- 1:45Speaker 2: to challenge Adri Jackson and Keithley Ringo for a starting role.
- 1:49Speaker 2: It didn't happen, but Jaikoreyan is now in a position
- 1:55Speaker 2: where he could factor in defensively. So the twenty one
- 1:58Speaker 2: day practice window was open, So that means the Eagles
- 2:01Speaker 2: have twenty one days to either activate Jakreyan Bennett to
- 2:04Speaker 2: the fifty three or shut him down for the regular
- 2:07Speaker 2: seat for the rest of the season. He suffered a
- 2:12Speaker 2: peck injury and that's what put him on injured reserve.
- 2:16Speaker 2: He injured his peck Week one against the Cowboys, played
- 2:19Speaker 2: through it, aggravated it in the game against the Rams,
- 2:22Speaker 2: and that put him on the shelf for the last
- 2:26Speaker 2: four weeks or so. So when you look at Adri
- 2:30Speaker 2: Jackson suffered a concussion against the Vikings and they have
- 2:34Speaker 2: Keey Ringo. You have Mac McWilliams the rookie, you have
- 2:37Speaker 2: Parry Nickerson behind Quinna Mitchell and coopergen But this is
- 2:41Speaker 2: a big week. I'm not suggesting that he'll be activated.
- 2:44Speaker 1: You never know. A lot of it is going to
- 2:46Speaker 1: be determined by.
- 2:47Speaker 2: Practice, how he looks mentally and physically, and Nick Sirianni
- 2:52Speaker 2: and Vic Vangio both spoke about that this week. But
- 2:56Speaker 2: you have to think if he has any shot of playing,
- 2:59Speaker 2: they're gonna want to get him as many snaps as
- 3:01Speaker 2: possible because the trade deadline is looming, and you want
- 3:05Speaker 2: to have a better idea of how he fits and
- 3:08Speaker 2: who he is or what he isn't. To have a
- 3:12Speaker 2: better evaluation and know what your cornerback room looks like.
- 3:16Speaker 2: You've exhausted all of your options and then you have
- 3:19Speaker 2: a better inkling where some of these pieces fit. And
- 3:22Speaker 2: if maybe you aren't overly enthused with the options that
- 3:25Speaker 2: you have in house, well then maybe you're aggressive in
- 3:28Speaker 2: the trade market or you're trying to at least seek
- 3:32Speaker 2: a reinforcement there. So I'm gonna be keeping an eye
- 3:36Speaker 2: on Jacory and Bennett leading up to the Eagles Giants
- 3:39Speaker 2: and seeing what happens.
- 3:40Speaker 1: He was out there on the practice field just like
- 3:42Speaker 1: Brandon Graham was.
- 3:43Speaker 2: Sue opet is interesting because and I mentioned this about
- 3:47Speaker 2: three weeks ago when the Tampa Bay Buccaneers released him
- 3:52Speaker 2: or they I think he was on their practice squad,
- 3:56Speaker 2: but knowing that the Eagles lacked for veteran support in
- 4:02Speaker 2: terms of depth along the offensive line. He has played
- 4:05Speaker 2: left guard, he's played right guard. Leagals brought him in
- 4:09Speaker 2: initially as a twenty nineteen undrafted free agent.
- 4:12Speaker 1: He was elevated to the active roster late that season.
- 4:14Speaker 2: Played in thirty eight games ten starts for the Eagles
- 4:17Speaker 2: between twenty twenty and twenty twenty three. Signed a deal
- 4:21Speaker 2: with the tamp Bay Buccaneers. Tears his ACL in his
- 4:23Speaker 2: first summer July of twenty twenty four. Didn't make the
- 4:27Speaker 2: Buccaneers this summer, so he didn't even play any game
- 4:30Speaker 2: for the Buccaneers, a regular season game, I should say.
- 4:34Speaker 2: But when he was released, I even mentioned I think
- 4:36Speaker 2: I was talking to Adam Kaplan before one of our
- 4:39Speaker 2: shows on Tuesday night, and I said, Zuelopetta was released,
- 4:42Speaker 2: it would make a lot of sense for the Eagles
- 4:44Speaker 2: to go and consider bringing him in on the practice squad,
- 4:47Speaker 2: just to have a player that has the veteran experience
- 4:50Speaker 2: that you could call up at a moment's notice and
- 4:52Speaker 2: you kind of have an idea of what he's going
- 4:55Speaker 2: to provide. Jeff Stoutlin certainly very well versed in what
- 4:57Speaker 2: zue Opetta can do. It can't hurt, right, and you
- 5:00Speaker 2: never want to make too much of those signings, but
- 5:02Speaker 2: it just makes a lot of sense to strengthen all
- 5:05Speaker 2: areas wherever you can, and I think that was a
- 5:08Speaker 2: savvy move there. But those are the two roster editions today,
- 5:14Speaker 2: or roster news, I should say. But let's get to
- 5:17Speaker 2: the practice status report, and there was a number of
- 5:22Speaker 2: names here that are notable, so not practicing today.
- 5:25Speaker 1: Wide receive Ray J.
- 5:26Speaker 2: Brown with the hamstring, cornerback of Dory Jackson with the concussion,
- 5:30Speaker 2: Center Cam Jurgens with the knee, outside linebacker Zizo Juli hamstring,
- 5:35Speaker 2: linebacker Jeremiah Trotter Junior with the ankle. Limited were cornerbacks
- 5:39Speaker 2: Coryan Bennett with the pectoral tight end Grant Klcaterra oblique guard,
- 5:44Speaker 2: Landon Dickerson ankle back, tight end Dallas Goddard CAF defensive
- 5:47Speaker 2: tackle Moro Jomo's shoulder.
- 5:50Speaker 1: Full defensive end Brandon Graham not injury related.
- 5:56Speaker 2: So I did not see adri Jackson, Cam Jurgens or
- 6:00Speaker 2: Aziso Julari on the practice field for the time that
- 6:03Speaker 2: we were out there the media attended portion. I did
- 6:06Speaker 2: see linebacker Jeremiah Trotter Junior off to the side. I
- 6:09Speaker 2: did see aj Brown off to the side wearing a
- 6:12Speaker 2: black Eagles hoodie with number eleven on the back.
- 6:15Speaker 1: Hamstrings can be fickle.
- 6:17Speaker 2: But we'll have to wait and see and monitor it
- 6:19Speaker 2: throughout the week and see how that progresses. But it's
- 6:24Speaker 2: certainly something that we didn't necessarily expect to see.
- 6:28Speaker 1: But there you have it. That's your practice report today. Limited.
- 6:35Speaker 2: I think it's important to reiterate that your Kureyan Bennett's
- 6:38Speaker 2: practice window was open today. He was not a full participant.
- 6:41Speaker 2: He was limited with the pectoral I'm curious to see
- 6:45Speaker 2: if Thursday that upgrades to full or if it's still limited.
- 6:50Speaker 2: That might give you a better idea of the direction
- 6:52Speaker 2: that things are trending. Grant Calcatara limited. Remember he missed
- 6:56Speaker 2: the past two weeks of an oblique injury, and if
- 6:58Speaker 2: you miss the wb CB show that Adam Kaplan and
- 7:01Speaker 2: I did on Tuesday night from Chickens and Pizza and
- 7:05Speaker 2: Roosevelt Boulevard. We had running back Will Shipley was our guest,
- 7:10Speaker 2: and it was a phenomenal show. Really enjoyed the conversation.
- 7:13Speaker 2: But one of the questions that I asked Will was
- 7:17Speaker 2: the oblique injury and what are some of the challenges
- 7:19Speaker 2: that it presents. What's the recovery a recovery process like,
- 7:24Speaker 2: because he suffered that injury Week one against the Cowboys.
- 7:28Speaker 2: So if you haven't got a chance to listen to
- 7:30Speaker 2: it or watch it live, you can grab that podcast
- 7:33Speaker 2: on the Inside the Birds podcast platform.
- 7:35Speaker 1: It's there. It's good.
- 7:36Speaker 2: I think you'll enjoy it. And Grand Calcatara's back right now.
- 7:43Speaker 2: Brandon Graham spoke today and there was a just a
- 7:48Speaker 2: sea of reporters of me being among them that were
- 7:51Speaker 2: in front of his locker, And as you might expect,
- 7:55Speaker 2: he said, you know, you know, I'm back now. I
- 7:57Speaker 2: don't have to you know, I don't have to focus
- 7:59Speaker 2: on my golf game and things like that. But he
- 8:03Speaker 2: he talked about you know, being in shape versus being
- 8:07Speaker 2: in football shape, and that you know, he feels he
- 8:10Speaker 2: feels good his body feels good. And about the tricep injury,
- 8:16Speaker 2: that was something that I found to be notable because
- 8:18Speaker 2: he talked about to find the quote here you know
- 8:25Speaker 2: about you know, he suffered a tricep injury in week
- 8:27Speaker 2: twelve and then he tore it again in the Super Bowl.
- 8:29Speaker 2: He said, I feel good. I feel like nothing happened.
- 8:31Speaker 2: It's held up, body feels fresh. They call them fresh legs.
- 8:35Speaker 2: But right now, just taking it day to day, just
- 8:37Speaker 2: enjoying it. Man, I'm happy to be back. Spoke to
- 8:43Speaker 2: rookie defensive tackle Ty Robinson about what it was like
- 8:46Speaker 2: after one practice to be around Brandon Graham on the
- 8:49Speaker 2: practice field, and he said it was great. He'd met
- 8:51Speaker 2: him a few different times over the summer, but you know,
- 8:54Speaker 2: he said he was quote unquote dog shit tired on
- 8:56Speaker 2: the practice field from taking on a lot of those
- 8:58Speaker 2: scout team reps.
- 8:59Speaker 1: And he said, BG was like, I know, but we
- 9:02Speaker 1: don't have much longer.
- 9:03Speaker 2: And he said he's just it's just good to have
- 9:05Speaker 2: him out there and that it's just awesome.

- 12:41Speaker 3: one and up.
- 12:44Speaker 2: And also spoke to rookie safety Drew mccouba, who had
- 12:51Speaker 2: you know, he had some good plays and he had
- 12:52Speaker 2: some not so good plays. He was very forthcoming in
- 12:55Speaker 2: that assessed his rookie season through seven games. You heard
- 12:58Speaker 2: what Vic Vangao said about Drew macouba to this point.
- 13:02Speaker 2: He called his rookie campaign uneven, but you know, it
- 13:06Speaker 2: was interesting to hear Drew's perspective on how his campaign's going. Again,
- 13:11Speaker 2: I just left the complex, so I have to I
- 13:14Speaker 2: don't remember, I don't have the exact quotes in front
- 13:17Speaker 2: of me. I have to transcribe all that, So that
- 13:21Speaker 2: will likely be one of my stories this week. If not,
- 13:24Speaker 2: it'll end up being in an end of the week
- 13:25Speaker 2: notebook with some of the extra quotes that I have,
- 13:27Speaker 2: along with Ty Robinson and his progress, because I get
- 13:30Speaker 2: asked about Ty a lot. And I'm looking to talk
- 13:34Speaker 2: to Jacory and Bennett this week to talk about his
- 13:36Speaker 2: road back and what that recovery process was like. And
- 13:41Speaker 2: there will be a story at Inside the Birds dot
- 13:43Speaker 2: Com about Brandon Graham's return a lot of the things
- 13:45Speaker 2: that he had to say today, and we'll have all
- 13:48Speaker 2: the Eagles coverage on Inside the Birds and Inside the
- 13:52Speaker 2: Birds dot Com and all the different podcasts.
- 13:54Speaker 1: Oh I should also mention Cam Jurgens.
- 13:57Speaker 2: That's interesting because there's a lot of different ways the
- 14:00Speaker 2: Eagles could go different offensive line of iterations. You could
- 14:04Speaker 2: do something like move Land and Dickerson to center, and
- 14:07Speaker 2: then maybe you put Brett Toath at left guard. Let's
- 14:09Speaker 2: not forget the Giants have Dexter Lawrence, who is an
- 14:12Speaker 2: absolute force. He's a menace in the middle of that line,
- 14:15Speaker 2: and he's a big body guy who can generate pressure
- 14:18Speaker 2: up the middle. So maybe putting Land and Dickerson there
- 14:21Speaker 2: would make some sense. But let's not look past the
- 14:25Speaker 2: history here. Jeff Stoutlin has sort of been reluctant to
- 14:30Speaker 2: move multiple spots, to alter multiple positions for continuity purposes.
- 14:34Speaker 2: But different circumstances call for a change of plans, and
- 14:38Speaker 2: Nick Sirianni said today, we have a lot of confidence
- 14:40Speaker 2: in the players that we have, but we also need
- 14:43Speaker 2: to make sure that we're giving ourselves the best opportunity
- 14:45Speaker 2: to win. I'm paraphrasing here, but there's some other options
- 14:49Speaker 2: that they have. They could keep Toth at center and
- 14:52Speaker 2: keep Landing at left guard. We talked about sue Opetta.
- 14:55Speaker 2: Suell Petti's played left guard and right guard. You could
- 14:58Speaker 2: elevate him from the practice squad if you think that's
- 15:01Speaker 2: a better matchup and put him at left guard, move
- 15:03Speaker 2: Land into center. There's Matt Pryor, who's really more of
- 15:08Speaker 2: a right side guy. That's how the Eagles have utilized him.
- 15:10Speaker 2: That's where he repped in training camp, So it doesn't
- 15:13Speaker 2: seem likely they be inclined to put him at left guard.
- 15:16Speaker 2: But there's a lot of different mixing and matching that
- 15:18Speaker 2: they could do in the event that Cam Jurgens can't
- 15:21Speaker 2: go on Sunday. There hasn't been a lot of clarity
- 15:23Speaker 2: or any sense of what the timetable could look like.
- 15:27Speaker 2: I'm personally not expecting Cam Jurgens to play on Sunday.
- 15:30Speaker 2: He wasn't out there today, and Nick Sirianni today said
- 15:34Speaker 2: we'll see, we'll see how it goes.
- 15:36Speaker 1: They have to get through the week and things like that.
- 15:38Speaker 2: But not being out there Wednesday isn't a great start,
- 15:42Speaker 2: So it wouldn't seem like that's trending in the positive
- 15:44Speaker 2: direction for Sunday.
- 15:46Speaker 1: I would imagine that the most.
- 15:47Speaker 2: Logical course of action would be to get Cam Jurgens,
- 15:51Speaker 2: you know, resting this week, maybe resting through the bye week,
- 15:55Speaker 2: and we'll have to see what happens. If any any
- 15:58Speaker 2: more news comes out about that, I will certainly keep
- 16:01Speaker 2: the audience informed as I always do. But that's gonna
- 16:05Speaker 2: do it for this edition of the Checko Deli. I'm
- 16:07Speaker 2: Andrew to Checko. You can follow my work on insidethebirds
- 16:11Speaker 2: dot com of course, right here on to checkodli and
- 16:13Speaker 2: I will catch you on the next one.
