- 0:00Speaker 1: Welcome back to The Mark Simone Show, live from the
- 0:04Speaker 1: WOR LifeVac studios. Hey, we'll take some calls. And we
- 0:10Speaker 1: always like to get new callers. If you've never called before,
- 0:13Speaker 1: give us a call. 800-321-0710 is the number.
- 0:14Speaker 2: 800-321-0710.
- 0:14Speaker 1: Let's go to Mara in Nevada. Mara, how are you doing?
- 0:17Speaker 1: A very old caller. How old are you?
- 0:31Speaker 2: I'm so happy. A very old caller, Mark. I'm so
- 0:34Speaker 2: happy for this extra hour, 9 to 12. You know
- 0:38Speaker 2: what time I had to get up this morning?
- 0:40Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 0:40Speaker 2: A quarter to 6.
- 0:42Speaker 1: So a three-hour time difference, right? It's 6 o'clock.
- 0:46Speaker 4: Yes.
- 0:46Speaker 2: And I'm so happy. I'm sitting here. I got dressed.
- 0:49Speaker 2: I brushed my teeth, washed my face, and I'm sitting
- 0:52Speaker 2: here listening to you.
- 0:53Speaker 1: Now, older people... Older people. Really older people. Why do
- 0:57Speaker 1: they all get up at 5 in the morning? It's
- 0:59Speaker 1: not like they've got to go to work.
- 1:00Speaker 2: No, I usually get up around 6.30.
- 1:02Speaker 1: Who gets up at 6.30? Why do you get up
- 1:04Speaker 1: so early?
- 1:06Speaker 2: Well, because the sun is out here. You know, it's
- 1:09Speaker 2: sunny all the time. You can't stay. I'm a morning person. Well,
- 1:12Speaker 2: I don't go to bed until 9.30, 10 o'clock.
- 1:15Speaker 1: Oh, my God. What a wild woman.
- 1:16Speaker 3: 9.30.
- 1:16Speaker 1: Right.
- 1:18Speaker 2: 96 years old. That's pretty good.
- 1:20Speaker 3: Right.
- 1:20Speaker 1: That Target demo. Perfect. Now, in Las Vegas... You're not
- 1:25Speaker 1: supposed to go to sleep at 9 o'clock.
- 1:27Speaker 5: Oh, no.
- 1:28Speaker 2: But, you know, I don't go. It's close. We're 45
- 1:31Speaker 2: miles away. I would like to go to the sphere.
- 1:35Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 1:35Speaker 2: They say it's very nice. But, you know, I have
- 1:40Speaker 2: macular degeneration, although I don't need a walker or a cane.
- 1:44Speaker 2: It's difficult with steps going down. So some things I
- 1:49Speaker 2: can't see, but I hear it's wonderful and exciting.
- 1:52Speaker 1: Yeah, you would love it. Well, I don't know if
- 1:54Speaker 1: you're a big fan of the acts that play there.
- 1:56Speaker 1: You're not a big Eagles fan, are you?
- 1:58Speaker 2: No, no. I'm Frank Sinatra.
- 2:01Speaker 1: You know, that's my age. See, if you go to
- 2:03Speaker 1: the sphere, it's not going to be Andy Williams, if
- 2:05Speaker 1: you know what I mean. It might not be an
- 2:07Speaker 1: act you like.
- 2:08Speaker 2: I know he's gone. All right. But you will know who's...
- 2:11Speaker 2: I'm a fan of Freddie Mercury. I love Freddie Mercury.
- 2:16Speaker 1: Wow, there you go. Contemporary. What did he die, 40
- 2:18Speaker 1: years ago? That's very contemporary.
- 2:19Speaker 2: Well, no, the last movie I went to see was
- 2:22Speaker 2: Bohemian Rhapsody.
- 2:24Speaker 1: Great.
- 2:24Speaker 5: Wow.
- 2:25Speaker 3: Yeah, I loved it.
- 2:26Speaker 1: That's 30 years ago.
- 2:26Speaker 2: I went to the movies to see Bohemian Rhapsody.
- 2:29Speaker 1: All right. Well, thanks for calling, Mara. Let's go to
- 2:33Speaker 1: Vincent in Brooklyn. Vincent, how are you doing?
- 2:35Speaker 4: Good morning, Mark. Mark, I'm okay. I believe that the
- 2:38Speaker 4: city council passing outdoor dining 24-7, 360 days a year,
- 2:42Speaker 4: is just another veiled attempt. to eliminate cars in New
- 2:50Speaker 4: York City. Tell me, who is going to eat out
- 2:54Speaker 4: in a shed? I don't care where it is. When
- 2:58Speaker 4: it's five degrees out in New York City and there's
- 3:02Speaker 4: snow everywhere except where they have the steam pipes under
- 3:07Speaker 4: the street, Con Edison steam pipes that are melting the snow.
- 3:11Speaker 4: This is just another attempt. And if they're doing it,
- 3:17Speaker 4: These people who put these sheds out beyond the curb,
- 3:22Speaker 4: they should have to pay not only a fee, a
- 3:24Speaker 4: permit fee, they should have to pay rent for the
- 3:28Speaker 4: city's real estate because that's the real estate of the public.
- 3:31Speaker 1: Yeah, well, once again, Vincent, you're absolutely right. It doesn't
- 3:35Speaker 1: make sense to block the road, but you're right. They
- 3:37Speaker 1: hate cars, so that's why they're doing it. Good call, Vincent.
- 3:39Speaker 1: Thanks for calling. Let's go to Michael in Oyster Bay. Michael,
- 3:43Speaker 1: how are you doing?
- 3:45Speaker 5: Hey, great, great.
- 3:46Speaker 3: I like the extra hour also. I have a question
- 3:48Speaker 3: for you.
- 3:48Speaker 4: What's your opinion?
- 3:49Speaker 3: Donald Trump wants to change the daylight savings time, but
- 3:51Speaker 3: here's what I think he should do. The weather's been lousy,
- 3:54Speaker 3: like in May and June over the last couple of years.
- 3:55Speaker 3: Can he move summer to start July 1st and end
- 3:58Speaker 3: October 15th?
- 3:59Speaker 1: No, I wouldn't move that daylight savings. I'd make it
- 4:02Speaker 1: two hours. No, you need an extra hour of daylight,
- 4:08Speaker 1: especially there in Oyster Bay. You got Cooper Bluff. You
- 4:10Speaker 1: got all that stuff there. You need more.
- 4:12Speaker 3: Yeah, I want to go boating.
- 4:13Speaker 4: Yeah.
- 4:13Speaker 1: Yeah. All right. Well, thanks for calling. Let's go to
- 4:16Speaker 1: Tim in Hartsdale. Tim, how you doing? Hi, Mark. I
- 4:20Speaker 1: love your show.
- 4:21Speaker 3: Yeah, I was just calling.
- 4:22Speaker 1: I had a great suggestion, I think, for Howard Stern.
- 4:25Speaker 4: Yes.
- 4:27Speaker 3: I think they should put him on The View. I
- 4:30Speaker 3: think he would fit right in.
- 4:33Speaker 1: Well, actually, he looks like an old woman, and he
- 4:35Speaker 1: does say all the left-wing things. You're right. He would
- 4:39Speaker 1: be perfect there. He looks like one of them. Yeah,
- 4:41Speaker 1: you're right. No, I like that idea. He's a crazy left-winger,
- 4:45Speaker 1: looks like an old lady, acts like an old lady,
- 4:47Speaker 1: be perfect for the view. It is a good idea.
- 4:49Speaker 1: Let's go to Barney in Eastport. Barney, where's Eastport? Next
- 4:53Speaker 1: to Northport?
- 4:54Speaker 5: Eastport's east of Long Island, just a little west of
- 4:58Speaker 5: West Hampton Beach.
- 4:59Speaker 1: Oh, that's way out there then.
- 5:01Speaker 5: Yeah.
- 5:02Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 5:03Speaker 5: So anyway, Mark, I just want to talk to you.
- 5:06Speaker 5: We're talking about the demise of variety shows. But another
- 5:09Speaker 5: thing I wanted to mention was that, you know, Dolly
- 5:11Speaker 5: Parton passed Tim Curry. But one of my favorites just
- 5:14Speaker 5: passed J.P.
- 5:15Speaker 3: Morgan.
- 5:16Speaker 1: J.P.
- 5:16Speaker 4: Morgan.
- 5:17Speaker 1: You were her fan. There's not a lot of J.P.
- 5:19Speaker 1: Morgan fans out there.
- 5:20Speaker 4: Oh, I love J.P.
- 5:21Speaker 5: Morgan. Especially when she flashed the audience on the Gong Show. Anyway,
- 5:26Speaker 5: you were talking about the demise of the variety shows.
- 5:29Speaker 5: Do you remember this one? Saturday Night Live?
- 5:32Speaker 4: Yes.
- 5:33Speaker 1: Howard Cosell? With Howard Cosell?
- 5:37Speaker 5: Saturday night, you know, this was a.
- 5:40Speaker 1: I'm trying to tell you, the one with Howard Cosell.
- 5:42Speaker 5: It was 75. It was hosted by Howard Cosell.
- 5:48Speaker 1: It took you a while to catch up. Things are
- 5:49Speaker 1: a little slow out there in the Hamptons, but thanks
- 5:52Speaker 1: for calling. Yeah, believe it or not, before there was
- 5:55Speaker 1: a Saturday Night Live, I guess it was Rune Arledge
- 5:59Speaker 1: was running ABC. Before there was ever a Saturday Night Live,
- 6:03Speaker 1: Rune Arledge got the idea of bringing back the Ed
- 6:07Speaker 1: Sullivan show. But instead of Sunday nights, they'd do it
- 6:10Speaker 1: Saturday night, primetime, big primetime show. And it would be
- 6:14Speaker 1: like the Ed Sullivan. They'd call it Saturday Night Live.
- 6:16Speaker 1: And they got Howard Cosell, who you might say, well,
- 6:19Speaker 1: he's a bit of a stiff for a variety show.
- 6:21Speaker 1: But that's what Ed Sullivan was. So he was the host.
- 6:23Speaker 1: He called his buddy. He was friends with John Lennon,
- 6:26Speaker 1: begged John Lennon to get the Beals together for a reunion.
- 6:29Speaker 1: He couldn't pull that off. But I think he got
- 6:30Speaker 1: John Lennon to come on. And I think it only
- 6:33Speaker 1: ran half a year. The variety shows by then were dead.
- 6:37Speaker 1: They couldn't make it work, and it just didn't last.
- 6:39Speaker 1: But SNL came along and sold the title, Saturday Night Live,
- 6:43Speaker 1: about a year later. Hey, when we come back, the
- 6:46Speaker 1: great talk show host Howie Carr will be with us next.
- 6:49Speaker 1: Lots to talk to him about coming up on 710WOR.
