- 0:00Welcome to Frontline Static, we will get to hear interviews with
- 0:02some of my clients journeys of getting into flight and how they
- 0:05utilize coaching to help them create success of getting hired
- 0:08with less confusion and more ease.
- 0:10Make your dream a reality of getting into flight.
- 0:12Listen in as you hear some of the stories of the people
- 0:14getting there and come join the flight Prep group.
- 0:16Hey you guys, welcome to another podcast episode this week.
- 0:21It is rounding out the end of the school year for my kids.
- 0:24And for those of you guys who have kids, I know that you're
- 0:27feeling it too. It's harder for them to get up
- 0:29in the morning. We have lots of events planned
- 0:32towards the end of the year and I think my kids have 3 1/2 more
- 0:36weeks of school if we're counting this week.
- 0:38So I know some of you guys are feeling it.
- 0:41And also it is weird weather here in California.
- 0:46I know some places of the country it's already really warm
- 0:49and we had a really hot week last week.
- 0:51It was like 100° this weekend. But I feel like it's become a
- 0:55little bit bipolar and today we've dropped into the 70s.
- 0:58So I actually have a jacket on inside, but that's kind of
- 1:02what's been going on with me lately as I'm rounding out this
- 1:06school year with my kids. I have a set of twins who are
- 1:11finishing off their junior year. They're going to be seniors next
- 1:14year, so I know that it's going to be really busy.
- 1:17And then my youngest is going to be starting middle school.
- 1:20And then I have an older child who is serving a mission right
- 1:24now in Brazil. So my life is kind of all over
- 1:26the place. But I hope for those of you who
- 1:30are mothers who are finishing up the school year that you are
- 1:36able to confidently get through it while also that you had a
- 1:41good Mother's Day. This past Monday.
- 1:42I know I did. I got or this past Sunday I got
- 1:44spoiled by my family. I had a topic this week that I
- 1:48really wanted to talk to you guys about and I kind of
- 1:52switched gears. I sat down to record it and I
- 1:54was like, no, this is something that I feel like a lot of people
- 1:59in the realm who want to get in a flight are kind of struggling
- 2:01with. And so I wanted to talk to you
- 2:04about this. And this is commonly one of the
- 2:09hardest parts of getting started towards this flight goal.
- 2:14When I wanted to become a flight nurse, I, I, I didn't know
- 2:17anybody else in the industry. It was actually something that I
- 2:19knew that I wanted to do early on when I first started nursing
- 2:23school, I was fortunate enough to be in a hometown who had a
- 2:31flight company and a medevac company that flew into the
- 2:33hospital pretty regularly. So I was exposed to it and got
- 2:37to see it and it flew above my house.
- 2:39And so it got me really excited for early on in nursing school.
- 2:42When I knew that I went to nursing school, I knew I wanted
- 2:45to work in critical care. I had twins that spent 75 days
- 2:49in the NICU, and so I knew I wanted to work in that kind of
- 2:52aspect of helping patients and families on the worst day of
- 2:55their lives, like people had helped me and kind of give back
- 2:58in that way. That's what really spurred me
- 3:00into going to nursing in general.
- 3:02And for those of you guys who've been following me, you know that
- 3:04this is my second career and I've ran this program now, the
- 3:10Flight Prep Academy. And I've ran my simple strategy
- 3:14and this plan for three years. And it's really helped create a
- 3:17lot of success of getting people into flight.
- 3:19And what makes my program different is that I not only
- 3:22give you the simple strategy and the map out plan, but there's
- 3:26this mindset piece because the plan is so simple on how to get
- 3:30to flight. And I really teach you, no
- 3:32matter where you're starting with that plan is, but what gets
- 3:35in the way is all our thoughts about ourselves, the thoughts
- 3:39that we have of other people and the thoughts of getting there.
- 3:43And those are the things that have people quit ahead of time.
- 3:46So this week I just wanted to talk about that getting started
- 3:50is the hardest part. And what makes this this hard is
- 3:55not having a plan. And usually This is why people
- 4:00don't even get started. They know they want it, but they
- 4:03don't start to work towards it until it's too late.
- 4:06And when I say too late, I mean they wait till their three-year
- 4:08mark and then they're having to try to play catch up.
- 4:11And there's been people who have been making connections and
- 4:14doing ride alongs with these companies since they were in
- 4:16nursing school. And those are the people that
- 4:18ultimately are being invited to the team.
- 4:20So This is why having a plan and taking action on it and making
- 4:26that plan as soon as you decide you want flight is really
- 4:30important. Creating that plan, that mapped
- 4:35out plan and working on it step by step keeps things simplified.
- 4:40It keeps you from not getting off track.
- 4:43I see a lot of people that come to work with me around being
- 4:47critical care nurses for 10-15 years, 20 years, 30 years, and
- 4:51it's because they didn't have a plan.
- 4:53And so when they felt uncomfortable or they've had
- 4:56thoughts, like I don't know enough, then they jumped units,
- 4:59they jumped apartments, they started to get more
- 5:01certifications. And this is just what has kind
- 5:03of taken them longer. So making a plan and being able
- 5:07to keep it simple and working towards it and knowing each
- 5:12year, each month, every so often, what are the things that
- 5:16that you need to be focusing on and keeping it simple.
- 5:19Again, like I said, is the key to creating success of getting
- 5:22to flight. So this is the hardest part, I
- 5:25think is, is the simplified version.
- 5:28I really teach you how to get to flight in three ways.
- 5:30One, have your mapped out plan to do ride alongs and make
- 5:34connections with like companies early on as soon as nursing
- 5:36school or graduating nursing school.
- 5:38And then three, really prepping confidently for flight
- 5:41interviews. And you want to start doing this
- 5:42at the two year mark of working critical care so that you can be
- 5:45ready. I really am helping people with
- 5:48these three simple steps get hired at the 2 1/2 year mark and
- 5:52some even before the 2 1/2 year mark.
- 5:55So that's why keeping it simple and doable is really important
- 5:59as well. You don't want to overcomplicate
- 6:02things. Overcomplicating things ends up
- 6:05happening from you feeling embarrassed or fear or
- 6:10disappointment and that's why I see people jumping from
- 6:13different units and getting more certs and getting their EMT or
- 6:16their paramedic license or pre hospital when none of that is
- 6:19really needed. So the third thing that I want
- 6:22to offer for you that I really teach in my program is this
- 6:26mindset piece is allowing the feelings that come up for you.
- 6:30Which means when you have a set back or you have thoughts of I
- 6:34don't know enough, you just allow the disappointment.
- 6:38You allow the embarrassment. You don't try to push it away.
- 6:42Pushing it away will go, will have you take very different
- 6:45actions and usually people overcomplicate it again by doing
- 6:50more. And none of that is really
- 6:52necessary versus just allowing yourself to feel a little bit of
- 6:55fear. Fear of failure, fear of
- 6:59disappointment, fear of embarrassing yourself, fear of
- 7:02hearing a no. And really and realizing that
- 7:08you can have these feelings and you can still be really
- 7:11successful. You can have doubt and still
- 7:15show up confidently. You can have fear and still be
- 7:20successful in this endeavor. In fact, getting into flight is
- 7:23going to require you to feel these emotions, and they're at
- 7:27that magnified level once you become a flight nurse.
- 7:29It's not like they there's this magic wand that just gets rid of
- 7:32all of those feelings. No, like you, you have magnified
- 7:36fear, magnified disappointment, magnified doubt.
- 7:39And I'm really teaching yourself and your brain that it doesn't
- 7:43have to be 1 or the other. It doesn't have to be doubt or
- 7:46confidence. It can be doubt and confidence
- 7:48and really teaching yourself how to do that.
- 7:50That's, that's what I really think is, is important in my
- 7:53program and, and I'm teaching along the way so that when you
- 7:56get the offer, you can transition confidently into that
- 8:01flight nurse role or that flight paramedic role.
- 8:04You can learn to become the person who has doubt and is
- 8:06still successful. And I maybe your brain is
- 8:10wondering, how do you do that? It's just not allowing yourself
- 8:14to have the doubt and then stop. Where I see this happen for a
- 8:18lot of people is they have doubt and then they stop and then they
- 8:21quit ahead of time. And I'm going to talk about that
- 8:23again in a minute. So I want to follow this up with
- 8:27a couple questions that I want you guys to ponder and really
- 8:30think about. And I, I think these are some
- 8:32questions that I help the people in the flight prep Academy in my
- 8:36program navigate. And we ask these on a weekly and
- 8:39a regular basis. How are you feeling about your
- 8:42plan to flight? Do you have one?
- 8:45Are you clear or are you unclear about what are the steps to get
- 8:48there? Are you certain about it?
- 8:51How are you feeling about that plan?
- 8:53And if you don't know the answers to any of those, come
- 8:56join the Flight Prep Academy. I'm going to give you a simple,
- 8:58doable plan to get you on track no matter where you're starting
- 9:01so that you can stay on track and not do more and keep it
- 9:04simplified and doable for you. The second question I have for
- 9:08you is what is keeping you from taking action on that plan?
- 9:12What's keeping you from taking action?
- 9:13Now? Maybe your brain is offering you
- 9:16a couple different things. This is commonly what I hear.
- 9:18Maybe your brain's telling you I don't have the time right now to
- 9:20commit to this. I don't know enough.
- 9:24I need more time and experience. It's going to be really
- 9:28complicated and hard, but I want to help you get really clear
- 9:33about what are these specific thoughts that are stopping you.
- 9:36Because when you get clear of what those are, this is how we
- 9:40can evaluate them. This is how we can work through
- 9:42them. This is how you can get unstuck
- 9:44and get clear on how to move forward.
- 9:47We don't have to let these thoughts stop us.
- 9:49In fact, this is our brain trying to keep us from growing
- 9:54and stretching. And think about how many times
- 9:57in nursing school you had those thoughts and you kept going.
- 10:01And so I commonly, I see a lot of people get stuck right here
- 10:04when they have those thoughts, they pull back, they start to
- 10:07feel inadequate and the fear has them quit ahead of time and say,
- 10:11oh, I'll do it later. Or when this and this happens or
- 10:14when things align better for me, when they're just prolonging
- 10:19really kind of going for it and stepping into the next version
- 10:21version of themselves and growing.
- 10:25I want to address the not having enough time.
- 10:27I actually teach you. I, I think that this thought
- 10:30comes from overachievers because I'm an overachiever myself.
- 10:33And there's been moments in my career and my life where I've
- 10:36just like given so much time and my energy and overworked and
- 10:40over hustle to get there that sometimes I get triggered with a
- 10:43big goal and I'm like, Oh, I'm going to have to overwork and
- 10:45over hustle. But I really teach you in my
- 10:48program how to reprogram your brain to not do that.
- 10:51In fact, to get to flight, you are going to have to slow down
- 10:54and not hustle. Because if you overwork and
- 10:57hustle to get there, which a lot of people do, and I saw that a
- 11:00lot when I was training new people, you will burn out so
- 11:03quickly as a flight nurse and it would become overwhelming for
- 11:06you. So I am really teaching you how
- 11:09to pull back, slow down, keep your plan simplified, map it
- 11:15out, work through some of your brain chatter, really do ride
- 11:19alongs, make connections, date a bunch of companies so that they
- 11:22get to know you and you get to know them and then confidently
- 11:25prepare. This is going to take, yes, you
- 11:28are going to have to carve out some time to really go for this
- 11:32goal. And people in my program are
- 11:34giving themselves one hour each week.
- 11:36That's one hour on our group call to really check in with
- 11:39themselves. Like where am I in our plan?
- 11:42What am I doing? What steps am I taking to move
- 11:44forward with it while also still making it work for my family and
- 11:47my work life and balancing at all?
- 11:49I'm really going to teach you how to balance it.
- 11:51So one thing that I want to address with this thought that
- 11:54your brain offers you is I don't have enough time is you don't
- 11:56have to overwork to get there. In fact, you need to slow down
- 12:00and not overwork and not hustle. And then the other thing is time
- 12:04will continue to happen. I don't know about you guys, but
- 12:09I always things are continuing to come up.
- 12:12So I'm really teaching you also how to grow the capacity to be
- 12:15the person who has life is lifing.
- 12:19Life is happening, unexpected things are are going on.
- 12:22And how do you really still fight for your growth, fight for
- 12:25the best version of you and fight for where you want to be
- 12:27at the same time. And I really teach you how to
- 12:30confidently grow your capacity to become that person who has a
- 12:35lot of life things going on and still is moving forward towards
- 12:39that next version of yourself and where you want to go as far
- 12:42as it comes to flight. And really the core things that
- 12:45I'm teaching you with the mindset are going to help you
- 12:46with personal areas as well. So know that I don't have enough
- 12:50time is going to be something that is constantly going to be
- 12:52coming up because life happens and things can and and time can
- 12:58is continuing to be something that is constrained.
- 13:02And so instead of having this limiting thought for yourself
- 13:06that I don't have enough time, Why don't we just grow the
- 13:09capacity to become the person who no matter what is happening,
- 13:13you have control over what you're doing, what you're not
- 13:15doing and becoming the person who has the time to dedicated to
- 13:19the things that you want to all of the things at the same time,
- 13:22because I do want to offer you. It is available to you.
- 13:26It's available to balance all of those things out.
- 13:28I think that's really what's helped me progress confidently
- 13:31in my career. I started flight nursing when I
- 13:34had four small children. I did nursing school when I have
- 13:363 kids under the age of 2 'cause I had just had my twins.
- 13:39And I never let that time constraint or that time excuse,
- 13:46I heard it a lot of my brain, but I never let it stop me.
- 13:49And I think it's really helped me progress in my career and in
- 13:52my goals because I let it be there, but I just kept also
- 13:58working at it. And I think that I think one of
- 14:02my strong suits is really being the person who believes that I
- 14:07have time for anything and especially time for going for
- 14:11what I believe in and what I want to do.
- 14:14And I think this also comes from working 24 hour shifts.
- 14:18When you are running four or five really busy calls and you
- 14:21have a lot of charting, it's like you go back to, you go back
- 14:25home and you're like, if I could run four or five really critical
- 14:30patients and really help them make it through some of these
- 14:35critical moments, Of course, I have time to do anything.
- 14:39And so I think like that confidence level has grown for
- 14:42me. And that's really what I'm
- 14:43helping critical care nurses and, and, and critical care
- 14:48medics really grow for themselves.
- 14:50So that time no longer becomes an excuse for you.
- 14:52I want to also address the I don't, I don't know enough.
- 14:56I don't have enough time and experience.
- 14:58I see people outrun this by changing departments or trying
- 15:01to get cardiac devices or working level 1 or trying to go
- 15:05to pediatric or pre hospital experience and I just want to
- 15:09offer you none of that is needed.
- 15:11You just need three years ER or ICU experience.
- 15:14It doesn't matter if it's a level 1 or a rural bed critical
- 15:18access center. And you also don't need any
- 15:21certification anymore to get into flight because they're
- 15:24requiring the CFRN within two to three years or a one to two
- 15:28years of being hired into flight.
- 15:29And they'll, I usually recommend waiting for that because they
- 15:32will pay for your resources and for you to be able to take the
- 15:34test. So this is a common thought that
- 15:38I see a lot of people outrun with switching departments and
- 15:41doing more to mitigate this thought of I don't know enough
- 15:46is you have to tell yourself. But what is it that I do know?
- 15:50What is it that I am good at? I was not the best test taker.
- 15:55I was not the smartest. Ask me a pathophys question.
- 15:58I, I pretty much could never answer it, but what I was really
- 16:02good at was doing well under pressure, pressure, critical
- 16:06thinking and working really well with the team.
- 16:08I loved the teamwork aspect of it.
- 16:10And so I really leaned into those things and then also
- 16:13allowed myself to feel inadequate, allowed myself to
- 16:16feel embarrassed when the intensivist and rounds asked me
- 16:19about the phys question and I didn't know.
- 16:21I allowed myself to say I don't know because here's the thing,
- 16:25no one knows everything. And if we limited ourselves by
- 16:29trying to know everything before we went to the next step, we
- 16:33would never progress anywhere. And so I want to offer you,
- 16:36allow yourself to make a list of what you do know.
- 16:40And if you are working critical care, you are good enough.
- 16:43There of course are things that you're going to be weaker in and
- 16:45things that you're going to be stronger in.
- 16:48So know that what you have is enough.
- 16:52Even if you work in A5 bed evening, we are rural ER in a
- 16:59hospital flight companies still want you.
- 17:02They want you for your resourcefulness.
- 17:04They want you for your critical thinking.
- 17:06They want you for getting things that you don't readily have
- 17:11available as a level 1 hospital. So I want to offer you that you
- 17:16are enough. Make a list of what those things
- 17:18are and and allow your brain to feel inadequate.
- 17:22Allow yourself to feel embarrassed.
- 17:25But what you have is enough. There is a reason why flight
- 17:28companies are only requiring ER or ICU experience.
- 17:32That's it. People like to over complicate
- 17:34that requirement. The last thing that I want to
- 17:37talk about is what sounds a lot of people is a thought it's it's
- 17:41going to be hard and I want to offer you it could be really
- 17:45easy. People who come to join my
- 17:48flight prep Academy realized it's a lot easier to get ride
- 17:52alongs and you thought it was going to be.
- 17:53I have someone in my group who did six ride alongs in the last
- 17:57four weeks and now I don't suggest that.
- 17:59And she really did enjoy them and have a good time.
- 18:02But it is easier to get a ride along and make connections with
- 18:05light companies and really get interviews than you think.
- 18:07It's just going about it the way and asking the right way and
- 18:11reaching out to them and connecting with them.
- 18:14It could be easy. I just want to offer you that
- 18:16thought. It could be a lot easier than
- 18:19you think. You could be over complicating
- 18:21it. Other people could be over
- 18:22complicating it for you. It doesn't have to be hard.
- 18:25And then I do want to offer you, if it does end up being hard,
- 18:30you have done hard things. We are not.
- 18:34I think I see some people feel like we are entitled for it to
- 18:38be easy, to get really what we want for our goals and our
- 18:42dreams. Sometimes we aren't entitled for
- 18:45it to be easy. And so if it is hard, know that
- 18:48you are the person who has done hard things.
- 18:50You've done many of them and you can get through them.
- 18:52But I do want to offer you a thought.
- 18:53It could be easy, and I am helping a lot of people get
- 18:58hired into flight in the Flight Prep Academy a lot easier than
- 19:02they thought it was going to be. And that's really by mapping out
- 19:05this plan and staying on track. At the end of the day, I always
- 19:10also feel better when I give it my all meaning.
- 19:15I love the version of myself that gives 100% versus you all
- 19:20know the days when you're only giving 80 or you're only giving
- 19:2350. I love living with myself who
- 19:29who stays in that version who gives 100% to the goal that I'm
- 19:33trying to achieve. It always feels better for me.
- 19:36Doesn't mean I'm not going to fail.
- 19:38Doesn't mean I'm not going to feel hard emotions, but I love
- 19:41the version of me that is dedicated to giving that 100%.
- 19:45This is the last question that I want to offer you guys is what
- 19:48do you have to believe about yourself to move forward with
- 19:52this action plan? Not what do you have to do, but
- 19:55what do you have to believe about yourself?
- 19:57I'm going to give you a couple thoughts that have really helped
- 19:59me get to some big goals in my life and my career.
- 20:02One is I will always figure it out.
- 20:05There has been. No, I mean on every single call
- 20:09that I ran, the seven years that I was a flight nurse, I was
- 20:11nervous and I had doubt with me, but I always knew that I was
- 20:14always going to figure it out and my team and I were always
- 20:16going to figure it out. So I love that thought.
- 20:19You can glean on it. You can you can accept it for
- 20:21yourself, but I will always figure out.
- 20:24The other thought that I have is I can have fear and doubt and I
- 20:27can still overcome this. I can have fear and doubt and I
- 20:30can still be successful. I can have fear and doubt and I
- 20:33can still be really confident. I want to offer you reconnect
- 20:37with what you want, what you value and what you feel like
- 20:41your greater calling is. When I started nursing school, I
- 20:44knew that my greater calling was going to be flight and I knew
- 20:47that every day that I didn't work towards that I wasn't being
- 20:50the best 100% version of myself. And it not at me the the days
- 20:57that I wanted to give up on it and not do it and not go for it,
- 21:00it not at me. And that little voice was harder
- 21:03for me to live with than the one that just said, let's get it.
- 21:06We're going to figure it out. For me, this was I was always
- 21:10connected to the work that I did and being a critical care nurse,
- 21:17then moving into flight, I always felt like this was my
- 21:19calling, always felt like this is what I was really meant to do
- 21:23and I wanted to be able to do this work at the higher level.
- 21:27I would have never left flight nursing except that I started
- 21:29this coaching business and I realized that I could help save
- 21:35way more lives by helping more people get into flight.
- 21:38And not only helping people get into flight, but helping them
- 21:40confidently feel good about the work that they're doing and
- 21:44confidently show up to these things, calls and these
- 21:46transfers and these critical patients.
- 21:49I could save more lives doing that.
- 21:51And so being able to do a job that you know, you were meant to
- 21:55do, you know, is your greater calling and successfully
- 21:58achieving that is something that I will always be proud of.
- 22:01And I want you to know that it's available to you too.
- 22:04Sometimes what's helpful for me is I always think that if my
- 22:07kids came to me and asked me, hey, should I, should I work
- 22:11towards this goal, this dream, what would I say to them?
- 22:15And of course, I would say yes, absolutely.
- 22:19Even if you fail, even if you have some setbacks, even if you
- 22:25stumble and you have to get back up, I would tell them, of
- 22:29course, it's worth working for. And I want to offer you guys the
- 22:33same thing. What would you tell your best
- 22:36friend? What would you tell your kids if
- 22:38they came to you and they said, hey, I really want to get into
- 22:41flight. But what I tend to see people do
- 22:45is give into that thought and quit.
- 22:47And so I want to offer you think of if your kids came to you,
- 22:49your best friend came to you and said, hey, I really want flight
- 22:52nursing, what will you tell them?
- 22:54Because at the end of the day, we are our biggest cheerleader
- 22:57and we have to hold the belief for ourselves when other people
- 23:01don't. And I had to do this a lot for
- 23:03flight. I didn't necessarily have family
- 23:05on board or friends or coworkers that I thought were gonna go
- 23:08with me. And so I had to hold the belief
- 23:10for them and for me because I had to be on board with my
- 23:16dreams. I'm the one who has to live with
- 23:18me. And so ultimately, it's our
- 23:20responsibility to go out there and get our goals, get our
- 23:23dreams. Lastly, having the support in
- 23:26this big goal of flight is pivotal, especially when you
- 23:29don't know anyone else who has done it or who is doing it.
- 23:33And it will be really, really easy in this process to listen
- 23:37to your brain chatter or when someone offers you opposition to
- 23:40cling to that, but only because you've had those similar
- 23:43thoughts too. So I want to offer you when the
- 23:46plan is clear, it's easier to stay on track.
- 23:49It's easier to stay the course coupled with the ongoing support
- 23:53so that you can vent, check in and prevent yourself from making
- 23:56the same common mistakes that people make.
- 23:58And most important, not quitting ahead of time.
- 24:01My whole career, I've, as I've looked back, I really think
- 24:03what's created a lot of success for myself too is always having
- 24:06a mentor of someone who's ahead of me, of where I want to be.
- 24:10And so in each and every level of nursing school and then ICU
- 24:15nurse and then as a flight nurse, I had a mentor who I
- 24:18could vent to, who I could check in with, who could not let me
- 24:21quit and who supported me. And that's really what I'm
- 24:24offering. Bring you inside the Flight Prep
- 24:25Academy to get lifetime access membership all the way to
- 24:29however long it takes you get to flight and to transition
- 24:31confidently into the role. Anyone who wants flight, it's
- 24:35possible for you, but you have to decide that you're going to
- 24:41always figure it out and and getting that support again is
- 24:45pivotal. It's not just for the smartest,
- 24:47strongest, best take, take, best take, test takers in the room
- 24:51flights for those who are willing to go to battle for
- 24:54their dreams, who want to do something meaningful and are
- 24:57willing to always strive to work at the highest level of
- 25:00themselves and with the highest level of teamwork.
- 25:02That's unparalleled in the hospital.
- 25:06I loved every men of it. My favorite, favorite part was
- 25:09autonomy of being able to work with a big scope of practice and
- 25:16a big protocol and big protocol book and also to have advanced
- 25:21skills. But the one thing that I miss
- 25:23the most is working with the most elite teams of the people
- 25:27who wanted it the most too, and being able to work on critical
- 25:32patients to save their life, to get them from one place to the
- 25:35next, to use those critical thinking skills to work under
- 25:38high levels of pressure, and to work with the best of the best
- 25:41people. The teamwork was my favorite
- 25:43part. It's the thing I miss the most.
- 25:46And so I just want to offer you, this is what's available on the
- 25:49other side of your doubts. And when you have a mapped out
- 25:52plan, you know how to simply execute it and stay on track.
