- 0:29Speaker 2: peer into the adults only theaters in sticky floored cinemas
- 0:33Speaker 2: of the golden age of sexploitation, when the morals were loose,
- 0:38Speaker 2: the laws were murky, and the intercourse was all simulated.
- 0:43Speaker 2: Find us now on the Someone's Favorite Productions Podcast Network.
- 1:09Speaker 3: Opppppppppppp papppppppppppppppppppppppp.
- 2:04Speaker 4: I knew a guy had a car like that once.
- 2:07Speaker 5: Fucking bastard killed himself in it. Some little bitch was
- 2:11Speaker 5: so mean you could have pour boiling water down his throat.
- 2:14Speaker 6: He would have pitched ice cube.
- 2:18Speaker 3: Okay, that's the last time you run that mechanical glass
- 2:23Speaker 3: hole in here without an exhaust hose.
- 2:25Speaker 5: I catch you doing it one time, and you're right,
- 2:27Speaker 5: you understand, huh yes, But I'm gonna tell you something
- 2:32Speaker 5: else right now. I don't take any shit from your kids.
- 2:38Speaker 1: It's places for working stiffs, gotta keep their cars running
- 2:41Speaker 1: so they can get bread on the table.
- 2:42Speaker 4: It's not for rich ass.
- 2:43Speaker 6: It's not those kids want to go dragging on the
- 2:45Speaker 6: Orange Belt. I don't allow no smoking in here, neither.
- 2:48Speaker 6: You want to butt you go out in the junkyard.
- 2:50Speaker 6: Oh well, I don't smoke. Don't interrupt me, pump, don't
- 2:54Speaker 6: interrupt me. Don't get smut.
- 2:58Speaker 5: A sir, Why.
- 3:01Speaker 6: Those men over there smoke?
- 3:02Speaker 4: Kit?
- 3:25Speaker 5: Welcome back to the Beyond the Blood podcast. This is
- 3:27Speaker 5: the podcast where we break down our favorite horror movies
- 3:30Speaker 5: using their audio commentaries. My name is Chris Higgins, and
- 3:34Speaker 5: today very very very excited about this movie that we're
- 3:37Speaker 5: talking about. We're diving into the audio commentary for John
- 3:41Speaker 5: Carpenter's Christine. Audio commentary Came Out was released. Came Out
- 3:47Speaker 5: released in two thousand and three with a DVD release,
- 3:51Speaker 5: and so far it's been the only commentary track that
- 3:53Speaker 5: I've been able to find. It's with Keith Gordon, who
- 3:57Speaker 5: plays Arnie in the movie, and it's an excellent track.
- 4:00Speaker 5: I can't wait to get into it. But the good
- 4:03Speaker 5: thing about cars, I will tell you, dear listener, is
- 4:07Speaker 5: that there are multiple seats and therefore it allows for
- 4:11Speaker 5: us to drive with some company, some passenger princesses, as
- 4:15Speaker 5: you will. And today I'm joined by my favorite passor,
- 4:18Speaker 5: Steve of After Hours Video.
- 4:20Speaker 4: What's happening? Guys, happy to be here, well, scared for
- 4:23Speaker 4: this ride too.
- 4:25Speaker 5: So Steve, give me your thoughts on what do you
- 4:29Speaker 5: think about cars?
- 4:32Speaker 4: I mean, outside of Christine, they're pretty cool. But uh yeah,
- 4:36Speaker 4: I mean I think once you start getting into the
- 4:38Speaker 4: Christine territory crash for that matter, they become very hyper sexualized.
- 4:44Speaker 5: Have you ever seen The Car starring Josh Brolin.
- 4:48Speaker 4: I haven't.
- 4:50Speaker 5: That's a good one, man, got to check it out.
- 4:52Speaker 5: Maybe better get up on your car horror movie.
- 4:53Speaker 4: Not I'll get together.
- 4:57Speaker 5: Now, Steve, Listen, we're here to talk about Christine. Right,
- 5:00Speaker 5: But I don't know if you know this, but cars
- 5:03Speaker 5: typically they have more than two seats, right, there's usually
- 5:06Speaker 5: a back seat. And unlike the character Reggie and Pulp Fiction,
- 5:11Speaker 5: somebody is in our back seat and they are alive
- 5:14Speaker 5: and well. Please welcome to the Pocket premiere on the
- 5:18Speaker 5: podcast Josh from Beyond the Grave. What's up, man, dude?
- 5:22Speaker 6: What's up you just put me in Reggie territory.
- 5:24Speaker 5: Yeah, I thought about that. I thought about that hours
- 5:29Speaker 5: ago when I was like at work running the intro
- 5:32Speaker 5: through my head, which never, it never comes out the
- 5:34Speaker 5: way that it sounds in my head. I was like,
- 5:37Speaker 5: I can't reference somebody being in a back seat without
- 5:40Speaker 5: mentioning Reggie from pulp fiction.
- 5:42Speaker 6: I think, just to be safe, guys, I'm gonna squeeze
- 5:43Speaker 6: right between you and ride bitch. If that's cool. This
- 5:45Speaker 6: is a fury. Let's do this thing.
- 5:49Speaker 5: It's actually a bench sheet, so you could sit in there.
- 5:52Speaker 4: It's probably a lot safer too.
- 5:54Speaker 5: The great thing about the middle seat on a bench
- 5:56Speaker 5: is you don't have any o shit handles. So if
- 5:58Speaker 5: I have to take a corner real f fast, you
- 6:00Speaker 5: have to hold on to each of our thighs. You
- 6:03Speaker 5: have to grab.
- 6:03Speaker 6: Them, you know what I mean. That's right, that's right.
- 6:07Speaker 5: Thank you so much for joining us.
- 6:08Speaker 6: Man, absolutely man, happy to be here. Let's do this.
- 6:11Speaker 5: From from what I've heard, you are the biggest fan
- 6:16Speaker 5: of Christine I've ever seen in my life.
- 6:19Speaker 6: I am.
- 6:20Speaker 5: That's what I heard.
- 6:20Speaker 6: I hope, so that's what I mean. Really, I do
- 6:23Speaker 6: love this movie. I think it's probably my second favorite
- 6:26Speaker 6: John Carpenter movie, So it's up there, and I.
- 6:30Speaker 5: Love christ Your first is the word.
- 6:34Speaker 6: I love the war. People talk about the war now,
- 6:37Speaker 6: John's my favorite director, so I'm going the Thing obviously
- 6:40Speaker 6: the Thing, but yeah, no, I mean, I actually I
- 6:43Speaker 6: don't hate on the Ward, but Christine is one of
- 6:45Speaker 6: the most comfortable cozy I mean, right between you boys
- 6:48Speaker 6: on this and this fury Dude, I remember ready to
- 6:50Speaker 6: get down. We got good fifties radio going.
- 6:53Speaker 4: I do.
- 6:53Speaker 6: I love Christine Man.
- 6:55Speaker 5: Hell yeah, I love that man, Steve, what's your history
- 6:59Speaker 5: with Christie Man? We were figuring out what we want
- 7:02Speaker 5: to talk about, and I've just been itching to get
- 7:06Speaker 5: this movie on the podcast, and somehow I was super
- 7:09Speaker 5: stoked to see that there was a commentary track for it.
- 7:11Speaker 5: But what's your history with this? This is a movie you've
- 7:13Speaker 5: always loved or.
- 7:15Speaker 4: Oh yeah, this is one that it took me a
- 7:18Speaker 4: little bit to you know, get through. You know Carpenter's filmography,
- 7:22Speaker 4: and obviously I've seen like the more iconic ones, like
- 7:25Speaker 4: you know, by this point, I've seen Halloween, I've seen
- 7:28Speaker 4: Escape from New York, the Thing, and it took me
- 7:31Speaker 4: a little while to get to this one. But it's
- 7:34Speaker 4: exactly what Josh said earlier. It's a very cozy, just
- 7:38Speaker 4: like a feel good horror film that you could throw
- 7:41Speaker 4: on whenever. I mean, there's just so much to love
- 7:44Speaker 4: about this movie, and I had a little bit of
- 7:47Speaker 4: a deeper appreciation after seeing it in theater. I saw
- 7:50Speaker 4: I think it was two years ago now at this point,
- 7:52Speaker 4: but seeing the big screen, man, I mean, you hear
- 7:55Speaker 4: that John Carpenter Alan Howarth score just booming on the speakers.
- 8:01Speaker 4: There was like nothing like it. So as soon as
- 8:05Speaker 4: we started talking about discussing Christine, I was very, very
- 8:08Speaker 4: excited to do a deep dive into this film and
- 8:11Speaker 4: the audio commentary.
- 8:13Speaker 5: Isn't it funny? How I mean anymore? I don't know
- 8:16Speaker 5: about you, guys. I get more excited to see the
- 8:19Speaker 5: re releases in theaters than yeah movies like we saw
- 8:23Speaker 5: a couple of years ago, we saw I believe it
- 8:25Speaker 5: was for an anniversary. We saw Donna the Dead at
- 8:29Speaker 5: Regal near us Man and that was probably my most
- 8:34Speaker 5: exciting theatrical visit in over a decade at that point.
- 8:39Speaker 6: Texas Chainsaw was like that Jaws Exorcist. A couple of
- 8:43Speaker 6: times I saw John mid night songs, Jaws Dude.
- 8:47Speaker 4: Could you guys have a drive in near you at all?
- 8:49Speaker 3: Or we.
- 8:52Speaker 5: Have one? There's only one in New Jersey. It's about yeah,
- 8:55Speaker 5: about forty five minutes. About forty five minutes for me.
- 8:59Speaker 4: Nice I was that's where I saw it down and
- 9:01Speaker 4: the dead one that was like they were running that
- 9:05Speaker 4: state state.
- 9:06Speaker 5: We have about an hour and a half over in
- 9:09Speaker 5: a PA. We have the uh homing Yeah, yep, yeah,
- 9:13Speaker 5: we have that, but we don't really go out there
- 9:15Speaker 5: too much. They it's sort of like one of those
- 9:17Speaker 5: drives that it doesn't it doesn't sound that long. It's
- 9:19Speaker 5: like an hour and a half, but it's like middle
- 9:20Speaker 5: of nowhere. And last time we went out there, my
- 9:22Speaker 5: brother in law we hit a deer the way home.
- 9:26Speaker 5: Uh so and uh and I'll tell you la, yeah, yeah,
- 9:30Speaker 5: and I'll tell you the story. On the way there,
- 9:34Speaker 5: you're kind of going through like when you get near
- 9:36Speaker 5: the theater. It kind of becomes like deliverance almost since
- 9:39Speaker 5: that you know, like backwoods Pennsylvania. And as we're driving,
- 9:43Speaker 5: we come across I cannot remember the name. We come
- 9:46Speaker 5: across like a repair shop. It's like a tire shop
- 9:48Speaker 5: on the corner and it's got some stupid name that
- 9:50Speaker 5: we were joking about, and I was like, dude, are
- 9:53Speaker 5: there even enough people living around here that they require
- 9:56Speaker 5: a mechanic? So I go on Google as we're driving
- 9:58Speaker 5: and I look up this this shop and there was
- 10:01Speaker 5: like thirty reviews for it. So I start reading the reviews.
- 10:04Speaker 5: I'm like, what is like? This shop can't be doing well.
- 10:07Speaker 5: And the first review that comes up is a one
- 10:10Speaker 5: star review about somebody who had to stop there to
- 10:12Speaker 5: get their tire fixed, and they mentioned how they had
- 10:15Speaker 5: gone food shopping before they before the tire issue happened,
- 10:20Speaker 5: and they bought two jars of peanut butter and when
- 10:21Speaker 5: they got home they only had one. So they were
- 10:24Speaker 5: accusing this middle of nowhere mechanics shop of stealing their
- 10:29Speaker 5: peanut butter. And I my Skippy, are you guys, Jeff
- 10:35Speaker 5: for Skippy.
- 10:36Speaker 6: Guys, listen, Jeff, Creamy is legit. You know. I like
- 10:42Speaker 6: Peter Pan. I like the atoms Peter Pan with the
- 10:44Speaker 6: real oil at the top. I like to stir it
- 10:47Speaker 6: in fan.
- 10:48Speaker 5: Yeah yeah, okay, all right, sweet? Right now? So I
- 10:55Speaker 5: think I think right now I have Skippy.
- 10:56Speaker 6: Crunchy Crunchy's underrated dude.
- 11:00Speaker 4: Yeah, kind of like Christine.
- 11:03Speaker 5: Yeah, thanks for get back in. I was trying to
- 11:08Speaker 5: find a way to bring this back. Couldn't have at
- 11:13Speaker 5: you guys, ever read the book, the Stephen King novel,
- 11:15Speaker 5: I have.
- 11:16Speaker 4: A long time ago the same.
- 11:18Speaker 5: Yeah, I think it was like middle school for me.
- 11:22Speaker 5: I read it. I had that terrible Do you guys
- 11:24Speaker 5: remember that run in like the late nineties early two
- 11:27Speaker 5: thousands of the Stephen King covers that were like, yeah,
- 11:32Speaker 5: they were the.
- 11:33Speaker 6: It was just like the wheel, right, it was just
- 11:34Speaker 6: like the wheel well and like some some flames going off.
- 11:39Speaker 5: I think it had. I think it had like a
- 11:41Speaker 5: almost like a skull on the front of it. It
- 11:44Speaker 5: was a it was a terrible We actually we I
- 11:48Speaker 5: think my wife and I had it, and then we
- 11:49Speaker 5: got rid of it because we found like a first
- 11:51Speaker 5: pressing hardcover which has that cover the wheel with the
- 11:54Speaker 5: flame on it, because I think that's an original.
- 11:57Speaker 6: I've got like a bunch of first edition It's on
- 12:00Speaker 6: my shelf over here, but that's kind of out of
- 12:02Speaker 6: the way, but yeah, I've got it over there with
- 12:03Speaker 6: the wheel.
- 12:04Speaker 5: Yeah. It's been a long time since I read it,
- 12:07Speaker 5: and I know that there's a lot of differences between
- 12:10Speaker 5: the book and the movie, some major ones that will
- 12:12Speaker 5: go over that they talk about in the commentary track.
- 12:15Speaker 5: But let's get into this. This track that we listened
- 12:19Speaker 5: to here, So this stars John car stars I'm like, man,
- 12:22Speaker 5: I'm a mess today. This commentary track features John Carpenter
- 12:26Speaker 5: himself obviously the director of the movie. We also have
- 12:28Speaker 5: Keith Gordon on the track. It was recorded for the
- 12:33Speaker 5: DVD release of the film, and in my opinion, you guys,
- 12:38Speaker 5: let me know what you think, this is a phenomenal
- 12:42Speaker 5: like audio commentary. It's not too technical, it's it's fun
- 12:46Speaker 5: to listen to, it's enjoyable. What did you guys think
- 12:49Speaker 5: of this track in particular?
- 12:51Speaker 4: Take it, Steve, I mean, I definitely like this style
- 12:58Speaker 4: of audio commentary because especially I mean, I think this
- 13:01Speaker 4: is the first one I've listened to a John Carpenter
- 13:03Speaker 4: on it. So to hear him just be so opening
- 13:07Speaker 4: and candid about his approach to the film and kind
- 13:11Speaker 4: of what he was thinking, Like when they were going
- 13:13Speaker 4: through the film and process him talking, it just felt
- 13:17Speaker 4: like between him and Keith Gordon, they had like such
- 13:21Speaker 4: a like it feels like the guy's just hanging out
- 13:24Speaker 4: kind of vibe to it, and they were very open
- 13:28Speaker 4: about their experiences, you know, with Keith Gordon acting and everything,
- 13:32Speaker 4: So I like this style. It felt very It was
- 13:36Speaker 4: like a very easy listen and very informative.
- 13:40Speaker 5: This is your first commentary track you've listened to John.
- 13:42Speaker 4: Carpenter's I'm almost ninety nine percent positive are the ones
- 13:46Speaker 4: we've covered?
- 13:47Speaker 5: Oh dude, you have to go back and listen to
- 13:50Speaker 5: the Halloween commentary with John Carpenter and Jamie Lee Curtis. Oh,
- 13:55Speaker 5: it's probably one of the best, one of the most
- 13:58Speaker 5: fun commentary tracks of a time. Man, this guy is
- 14:01Speaker 5: legendary on a commentary.
- 14:04Speaker 4: Was was that on the Screen Factory four K or
- 14:06Speaker 4: one of the previous releases?
- 14:08Speaker 5: I think it. I think it is. I would have
- 14:11Speaker 5: to double check, but it is an incredible listen.
- 14:16Speaker 4: I panicked. I'm not even gonna lie for a minute.
- 14:18Speaker 4: I know, Chris, I was texting you last night about
- 14:20Speaker 4: this because I threw on the four K for Christine
- 14:23Speaker 4: and it's like there. I'm like, oh no, I'm like,
- 14:26Speaker 4: where's the audio commentary?
- 14:28Speaker 6: I did the same thing.
- 14:30Speaker 4: Yeah. Yeah. So un fortunately the Blu ray had that covered,
- 14:34Speaker 4: so that was awesome. But yeah, I really enjoyed this one.
- 14:37Speaker 5: Josh, what did you think of it?
- 14:39Speaker 6: Yeah? Man, To be honest, I feel like I I'm
- 14:43Speaker 6: kind of like a casual commentary listener. So a lot
- 14:46Speaker 6: of times at a party or stuff, like when it's
- 14:49Speaker 6: too late and everyone's passed out, sometimes the commentaries would
- 14:51Speaker 6: play naturally like after the movie.
- 14:53Speaker 5: You know.
- 14:53Speaker 6: So I've I've heard some, I've fallen asleep to some,
- 14:56Speaker 6: but I don't think i've studied one yet. So this
- 14:59Speaker 6: kind of broke my cherry, so to speak. First time
- 15:02Speaker 6: I've heard John Carpenter as well, and like Steve was saying, man,
- 15:07Speaker 6: those two guys just b s saying sometimes Keith sounds
- 15:10Speaker 6: like John, and sometimes they like have this natural synergy
- 15:14Speaker 6: between them that I mean I was. I had that
- 15:16Speaker 6: thing cranked up. I was like just laying down and
- 15:19Speaker 6: I would pause it. I'd take a couple of notes,
- 15:21Speaker 6: and then I'd rewind it because I was just smiling.
- 15:23Speaker 6: I was like, John's in such a good mood. I'm like,
- 15:25Speaker 6: there's no way this is new John, because he hates everything.
- 15:28Speaker 6: So two thousand and three, man, But no, Man, I
- 15:30Speaker 6: appreciate you guys. Give me the chance to do this
- 15:32Speaker 6: because that was like a religious experience if you're a
- 15:36Speaker 6: John Carpenter fan, Like, I don't know why I hadn't
- 15:38Speaker 6: listened to it, so dude, it was a dude.
- 15:41Speaker 5: He's He's great. And what I love about a track
- 15:45Speaker 5: with with a director like John Carpenter is that he's
- 15:47Speaker 5: not focused on just discussing the movie and what's on
- 15:51Speaker 5: the screen. He's very much bouncing things off of Keith.
- 15:54Speaker 5: They're talks he's giving, he's asking him for input on,
- 15:58Speaker 5: you know, acting, to his directing. What it was like
- 16:02Speaker 5: for him at these moments of the movie. It felt
- 16:05Speaker 5: like a true genuine conversation. That's kind of like taking
- 16:08Speaker 5: the spotlight off of John Carpenter giving the moment to
- 16:11Speaker 5: Keith and then getting talked back.
- 16:13Speaker 6: And for he critique himself too. He kind of like
- 16:15Speaker 6: dump on himself for some shots and Keith bick, what
- 16:18Speaker 6: are you talking about? We worked on that for two weeks. Man,
- 16:20Speaker 6: this was a great shot and John's like, oh, I
- 16:21Speaker 6: can probably see the camera here and You're like wait
- 16:23Speaker 6: a minute, and then I'm like trying to zoom in,
- 16:25Speaker 6: like wait is that actually? Yeah? John was so much fun.
- 16:28Speaker 6: I mean, how long have you do you always listen
- 16:31Speaker 6: to commentaries just kind of off the record.
- 16:34Speaker 4: Yeah.
- 16:34Speaker 5: Yeah, I've been listening to commentary tracks pretty heavily for
- 16:40Speaker 5: about ten or so years now. It's always been my
- 16:44Speaker 5: favorite bonus feature. That was kind of the basis of
- 16:50Speaker 5: kind of like getting started in the show is I
- 16:53Speaker 5: would listen to these commentaries and learn so much, and
- 16:58Speaker 5: I would think like, oh, this is like every cinephile
- 17:01Speaker 5: does this. And then as I talk to people and
- 17:02Speaker 5: I kind of got more involved in the community, I
- 17:04Speaker 5: realized that there's not a lot of people who do this, so.
- 17:07Speaker 6: That there's the need for it.
- 17:08Speaker 2: Man.
- 17:09Speaker 4: I mean.
- 17:11Speaker 5: It's interesting though, because there's like there needs to be
- 17:14Speaker 5: certain expectations when you go into a commentary track, because
- 17:16Speaker 5: there's different kinds and we've covered various different types, whether
- 17:19Speaker 5: they're from historians or critics or analysts.
- 17:22Speaker 6: Sure, too many people on the panel seems to like
- 17:25Speaker 6: weird me out, like it did the actors trying to
- 17:27Speaker 6: share the space. These intimate ones though, Man.
- 17:31Speaker 5: They're really nice. And what's what's funny is like you
- 17:34Speaker 5: have to set the expectation for people, like a track
- 17:37Speaker 5: like this, you're talking twenty years after the movie has wrapped,
- 17:41Speaker 5: there's not a lot that Carpenter really remembers as far
- 17:44Speaker 5: as like intimate production details, So you're not going to
- 17:47Speaker 5: get a whole bunch of like this brand new information.
- 17:53Speaker 5: And what's funny is and you guys probably know what
- 17:55Speaker 5: I'm talking about. In this commentary track, when he speaks
- 17:59Speaker 5: about the scene of Christine fixing her some Carpenter actually
- 18:04Speaker 5: says like, this is the first time I've.
- 18:06Speaker 6: Spilled ever all this info.
- 18:08Speaker 5: But at some point in the last twenty three years
- 18:12Speaker 5: since this track was recorded, somebody took that and it
- 18:14Speaker 5: got out. Now that's just regular you know IMDb trivia,
- 18:18Speaker 5: you know. Sure, so you get a lot of that.
- 18:21Speaker 5: But what I want people to focus on more is
- 18:24Speaker 5: just like when you listen to a track like this,
- 18:28Speaker 5: it it enhances your love for the filmmaker and for
- 18:32Speaker 5: the process and opens your eyes to some interesting little
- 18:35Speaker 5: elements about the movie that you never really you know,
- 18:38Speaker 5: thought about. And my favorite part about doing this is
- 18:41Speaker 5: every single time we do an episode, Man, I love
- 18:44Speaker 5: the movie even more by.
- 18:45Speaker 6: The time, said Mantal.
- 18:48Speaker 5: The ability to discuss and analyze every like every time
- 18:53Speaker 5: I'm done, like when we click done recording, I'm probably
- 18:55Speaker 5: gonna want to watch the movie again, just.
- 18:56Speaker 6: Right, but I'll just learned more because you've got different
- 18:59Speaker 6: perspectives now talking to us and what we like about it. Yeah,
- 19:02Speaker 6: I mean it's contagious.
- 19:03Speaker 4: Man.
- 19:04Speaker 6: I watched this movie probably three times a year, just naturally,
- 19:07Speaker 6: so this was like the first time I'd ever seen
- 19:10Speaker 6: it listening to them talk about it.
- 19:11Speaker 5: So I to break this down, man, that makes me
- 19:14Speaker 5: really happy to hear.
- 19:15Speaker 4: Man.
- 19:15Speaker 5: Hopefully from here you decide to check out more, dude,
- 19:17Speaker 5: because there's a lot of song song we've we've spent
- 19:20Speaker 5: the last year and a half breaking down audio commentary tracks,
- 19:23Speaker 5: and you know, I know, I've gotten multiple messages of
- 19:26Speaker 5: people who have kind of the same boat. They love
- 19:28Speaker 5: a movie, they've never checked out the commentary track, and
- 19:30Speaker 5: they did and it kind of, you know, re re
- 19:34Speaker 5: like launched their love for the movie or they found
- 19:37Speaker 5: out something they never heard before. And it's it's really cool. Man.
- 19:40Speaker 5: I'm stoked that you that you that you did this.
- 19:43Speaker 5: It took a dive in, man. I can't wait to
- 19:45Speaker 5: hear how many more commentary tracks you check out over
- 19:47Speaker 5: the next you, dude, You're gonna get You're gonna get obsessed. Dude,
- 19:50Speaker 5: you're gonna get it.
- 19:51Speaker 6: I've got some different horror group chats, and I'm like, dude,
- 19:54Speaker 6: I'm all in on commentaries, and my buddies are like, yeah,
- 19:57Speaker 6: I mean we do those once in a while, So
- 19:58Speaker 6: we just want to like drink some beer in watch commentaries. Now,
- 20:01Speaker 6: it's like, this would be awesome. Why don't we do?
- 20:03Speaker 5: It's cool?
- 20:04Speaker 6: Yeah, it's cool.
- 20:05Speaker 5: Well, as I always like to say, if you're listening
- 20:08Speaker 5: and you're not that big of an audio commentary person,
- 20:12Speaker 5: please don't use this episode as like the end all
- 20:15Speaker 5: be all. Please check out this track on your own.
- 20:17Speaker 5: We don't cover every single thing that's said in the track.
- 20:20Speaker 5: There's also no way that the group of us could
- 20:22Speaker 5: even begin to exude the energy that Carpenter and Keith
- 20:26Speaker 5: Gordon give off that allow for this commentary track to
- 20:29Speaker 5: be a perfect companion if you're a fan of this movie,
- 20:31Speaker 5: so please, as always go back give this track a listen.
- 20:34Speaker 5: I promise that you're gonna love it. How about this
- 20:39Speaker 5: the opening scene, I'm gonna dive right into it. Opening
- 20:42Speaker 5: scene of this movie, the Birth of Christine One. This
- 20:46Speaker 5: has always been my favorite scene of the movie. This
- 20:49Speaker 5: whole scene at the factory. It's always been a favorite.
- 20:52Speaker 5: First five minutes of interesting. So good dude, this movie,
- 20:58Speaker 5: like the vibe kicks off right away, right away. Man,
- 21:02Speaker 5: there's that beautiful like Dolly shot of it coming from
- 21:05Speaker 5: like the top of the factory and down you see.
- 21:07Speaker 6: The lineup panaglide baby coming through. It's it's so buttery
- 21:13Speaker 6: smooth compared to the rest of the movie. Yep, keep going.
- 21:16Speaker 5: No, you're good man, You're good. I this it's so
- 21:21Speaker 5: funny because when you put on a track like this
- 21:23Speaker 5: and you hear John Carpenter talk about how this was
- 21:25Speaker 5: the first thing they had shot. This was day one
- 21:27Speaker 5: of production and he was late to the set because
- 21:32Speaker 5: he got pulled over and the police officer forced him
- 21:35Speaker 5: to take a breathalyzer test. Right, you think he did?
- 21:40Speaker 5: Like you think he did, like a hey, hey, oster,
- 21:43Speaker 5: you ever see have you seen Halloween?
- 21:46Speaker 6: Four years after Halloween? Five? Yeah?
- 21:49Speaker 5: Officers like, oh yeah, yeah, I love that movie. Took
- 21:51Speaker 5: my took my kid to see it and he's like, yeah,
- 21:53Speaker 5: I made that. And then the cops like all right,
- 21:54Speaker 5: so step out of the car.
- 21:56Speaker 4: Did he did? He say?
- 21:57Speaker 6: The The shop was in Santa Clarita, which is like
- 22:01Speaker 6: you know where Halloween three is or was that East La?
- 22:04Speaker 6: I can't remember.
- 22:05Speaker 5: I believe this was a warehouse in East LA A
- 22:07Speaker 5: lot of like Arnie's neighborhood and stuff that was all
- 22:10Speaker 5: Santa Clarito. They went back to that purposely because yup
- 22:14Speaker 5: that whole area.
- 22:15Speaker 6: But if Heaven drove over there, it's insane, like there's
- 22:19Speaker 6: no he would be late because you can't. It's bumper
- 22:21Speaker 6: to bumper on the five.
- 22:23Speaker 5: I have to. I have to come out and see
- 22:25Speaker 5: it because I live right next to hadden Field, New Jersey,
- 22:28Speaker 5: which is what they were trying to capture the feel of,
- 22:32Speaker 5: you know, like that was because of who was it
- 22:36Speaker 5: that was on the Halloween crew that was from hadden Field,
- 22:39Speaker 5: New Jersey.
- 22:41Speaker 6: I forget who it was.
- 22:43Speaker 5: There was somebody on the Halloween crew who was heavily
- 22:45Speaker 5: influential that was from hadn't Field, New Jersey. That kind
- 22:48Speaker 5: of put this in motion, and that's kind of what
- 22:50Speaker 5: they were trying to recapture. So every single time I'm
- 22:52Speaker 5: Manhattan Field, which I drive through daily, it looks like
- 22:56Speaker 5: Halloween because that's what that town looks like. I want
- 23:00Speaker 5: to go to California and see what that looks like
- 23:02Speaker 5: it makes it.
- 23:03Speaker 6: It's amazing, man, It's unbelievable.
- 23:07Speaker 5: This opening scene. Did you guys have any idea that
- 23:09Speaker 5: it was based on an Alfred Hitchcock idea?
- 23:12Speaker 4: No, no, not till you mentioned it, dude.
- 23:15Speaker 5: I think it's wild, crazy, are you guys Hitchcock fans?
- 23:19Speaker 6: It makes so much sense now, like, of course, like
- 23:22Speaker 6: you would show the car being built from scrap to
- 23:26Speaker 6: completion and then just a body rolls out dead total Hitchcock.
- 23:31Speaker 5: I I ran out of time during research for this.
- 23:34Speaker 5: I was trying to figure out, like where this idea
- 23:37Speaker 5: came from, what Hitchcock was maybe looking to use it for.
- 23:39Speaker 5: How he publicly put this out there, Like how Carpenter
- 23:42Speaker 5: you even heard of this? Yeah, but he says that
- 23:47Speaker 5: Alfred Hitchcock had thought up this idea where just like
- 23:49Speaker 5: you said, we would see a car being built on
- 23:51Speaker 5: the factory line essentially from beginning to end, and at
- 23:54Speaker 5: the very end, when the car is completed, the trunk
- 23:57Speaker 5: opens and a body rolls out of it, which is genius,
- 24:02Speaker 5: absolute genius idea.
- 24:05Speaker 4: I love how with this specific sequence it has such
- 24:08Speaker 4: a dream like feel to it. I think more so
- 24:10Speaker 4: than the rest of the film, and wasn't it with
- 24:14Speaker 4: like the style of film that they were using for
- 24:16Speaker 4: the specific scene. Yeah, did they have something to do
- 24:19Speaker 4: with if I recall.
- 24:21Speaker 5: Yeah, So the opening scene was actually shot on a
- 24:23Speaker 5: Fujifilm stock because it came out with a little bit
- 24:26Speaker 5: of a browner tone, but it also was softer as well.
- 24:30Speaker 5: And they shot the rest of the movie on Kodak
- 24:32Speaker 5: following this, So that was a that was a purposeful
- 24:35Speaker 5: move to give a different feel, like an an aged look.
- 24:38Speaker 6: So this is in the fifties, this is off the
- 24:40Speaker 6: assembly line twenty five years ago.
- 24:45Speaker 4: It's so clean, Detroit and Detroit not too far from me.
- 24:49Speaker 5: What you guys, how's this opening sequence sit for you guys?
- 24:52Speaker 5: Because when I was a kid watching this, I thought
- 24:56Speaker 5: I was always terrified at the trunk or the hoodfall
- 25:00Speaker 5: on the hand, right, that that terrified me, But it
- 25:05Speaker 5: was more so. There's a moment when a guy gets
- 25:09Speaker 5: into Christine and begins flaying with her. Yeah, yep, So
- 25:13Speaker 5: he gets in, he's got a cigar in his mouth,
- 25:16Speaker 5: you see, he turns on the music and then he
- 25:18Speaker 5: flicks his cigar in the ashes fall in the Christine's seat,
- 25:20Speaker 5: which is covered us by the way, there is a
- 25:23Speaker 5: cover on the seat. But there's a genius move here
- 25:28Speaker 5: camera wise where we go back to that Dolly shot
- 25:31Speaker 5: because we see it looks like, I don't know if
- 25:33Speaker 5: he is, you know, a manager or a head of operations.
- 25:36Speaker 5: The lunch bell goes off and we see him, and
- 25:40Speaker 5: then we kind of go back to that Dolly shot
- 25:41Speaker 5: from the very opening where the camera's going from right
- 25:45Speaker 5: to left and you're seeing the assembly line and you
- 25:47Speaker 5: can actually see the guy in the car kind of
- 25:51Speaker 5: playing with the radio. You see him touch the steering
- 25:55Speaker 5: where he plays with the radio, and the camera pans
- 25:58Speaker 5: down and we lose sight of him. And now the
- 26:02Speaker 5: manager comes around the corner and he's no, you can
- 26:05Speaker 5: no longer see him.
- 26:07Speaker 6: It was from the inspective at his point of view.
- 26:09Speaker 5: Yeah, And he comes around and opens the door and
- 26:12Speaker 5: he falls out dead. I thought it was just a
- 26:16Speaker 5: genius because it's it's very what's the word I'm looking for.
- 26:19Speaker 5: It's very not like, it's very anti climactic. There's nothing
- 26:25Speaker 5: crazy that happens, like the hood falling on the hand
- 26:29Speaker 5: is traumatic, that's shocking. This is just he's sitting in
- 26:34Speaker 5: the car and the guy just dies. He's not crushed,
- 26:38Speaker 5: you know, he's not crushed against the seat, he's not burned,
- 26:41Speaker 5: he's not run over.
- 26:43Speaker 6: He just yeah, dies. I always look at it. Once
- 26:47Speaker 6: he comes in with that cigar and flicks it on
- 26:49Speaker 6: the seat. It's almost like, as a kid watching this,
- 26:53Speaker 6: I'm like, you can't do that. Like either I'm gonna
- 26:55Speaker 6: get in trouble for my parents. But this guy's working there.
- 26:57Speaker 6: He's it's almost like karma the Weird when they showed
- 27:01Speaker 6: that other manager perspective, man, it changes. It's like time
- 27:05Speaker 6: passes just enough and he's dead. It's like very smart. Yeah.
- 27:10Speaker 5: So in the book, the original owner of the car
- 27:16Speaker 5: is who is possessing Christine. Supposedly he is in the
- 27:21Speaker 5: car when Arnie is in the car. He is the
- 27:24Speaker 5: controller whatever you want to call it, the overbearing power.
- 27:26Speaker 5: But in the movie, it's just strictly something is wrong
- 27:31Speaker 5: with Christine. It's the car itself. There's nothing else possessing it.
- 27:35Speaker 5: From the line, this car is some sort of supernatural being.
- 27:41Speaker 5: And what I want to ask you, guys, do you
- 27:45Speaker 5: think Christine pulls in Arnie? Like do you think there's
- 27:53Speaker 5: a bigger power at work that's manipulating fate that Arnie
- 27:58Speaker 5: just happens to come across her. And Arnie is a weaker,
- 28:03Speaker 5: you know, very non confident, Like do you think Christine
- 28:08Speaker 5: purposely pulls in? People can basically tell. It's almost like
- 28:15Speaker 5: it's like a draw, and your your draw is like
- 28:17Speaker 5: somebody who's confident, somebody who is uh, you know there
- 28:21Speaker 5: they have no draw to that car. And we see
- 28:24Speaker 5: it in the scene. I'm jumping ahead a little bit,
- 28:26Speaker 5: but we see it in the scene when they find Christine,
- 28:29Speaker 5: where Dennis and Arnie find Christine. Dennis is uninterested. He's
- 28:32Speaker 5: like a piece of shit, It's.
- 28:34Speaker 6: Not gonna have any control. It's almost like a magnetic
- 28:38Speaker 6: magnetic magnetism or something like. They make it feel sexual
- 28:41Speaker 6: in the commentary, like, yeah, he's romanticizing it, but like,
- 28:47Speaker 6: you know, some guys find certain females attracted that. Your
- 28:50Speaker 6: buddy's like, what are you doing, man, And the guy's
- 28:52Speaker 6: just like, no, this this is my lady. You're like,
- 28:55Speaker 6: are you sure? Like that's yeah, that's a good perspective though.
- 28:59Speaker 6: For sure.
- 29:00Speaker 5: It just makes me curious because the obsession that Arnie
- 29:05Speaker 5: builds with Christine is it's not out of I feel
- 29:11Speaker 5: like nowadays if this movie was to come out, or
- 29:15Speaker 5: let's say there was a remake of Christine, which hopefully
- 29:18Speaker 5: fucking not. I hope nobody ever touches this movie again.
- 29:21Speaker 5: I hope it's like a John Carpenter comes out like
- 29:23Speaker 5: Spielberg did with Jaws, and it's like nobody's ever touching
- 29:27Speaker 5: this fucking movie. Like your bad, I feel like nowadays,
- 29:31Speaker 5: it would be the car manipulating Arnie, and then Arnie
- 29:35Speaker 5: would be the violent he is, you know, repressed from
- 29:39Speaker 5: years of bullying or not fitting in, and then he
- 29:41Speaker 5: is the outrage of violence. But Arnie gets more confident
- 29:45Speaker 5: and more cocky as the movie goes on, but he
- 29:47Speaker 5: doesn't necessarily get more violent.
- 29:50Speaker 6: Sure, it almost takes advantage of him, you know, Like
- 29:52Speaker 6: so the thing you're saying, it's preying on him and
- 29:55Speaker 6: his you know, insecurities, his ability to I mean just
- 29:59Speaker 6: takes a moment. So the Car lest sense that, like
- 30:02Speaker 6: you said.
- 30:03Speaker 5: Yeah, it makes me think of Like God, I was
- 30:09Speaker 5: just talking about every single time we go on a record,
- 30:12Speaker 5: I have these major brain farts. It's like it's like
- 30:14Speaker 5: when you have to speak in public and it's the
- 30:15Speaker 5: only time you stutter over your words. There was a
- 30:19Speaker 5: movie I was watching not too long ago, where it
- 30:21Speaker 5: was it was a character and anybody they didn't like
- 30:27Speaker 5: was getting killed by this entity. So it was almost
- 30:29Speaker 5: like this entity could feel, this object could feel the
- 30:33Speaker 5: hate towards its human attachment, and then it went out
- 30:37Speaker 5: of its way to kill those people. It's kind of
- 30:39Speaker 5: what it feels like with Christine. It's almost like Christine
- 30:44Speaker 5: attaches onto something that is that Arnie is unable to
- 30:50Speaker 5: become and becomes that violent side of him, as we
- 30:54Speaker 5: see as she begins to murder the group of bullies
- 30:59Speaker 5: from the autoshop sequence. But it's interesting, I guess I'm
- 31:04Speaker 5: just trying to see if, like what other power is
- 31:07Speaker 5: at play here.
- 31:09Speaker 6: You know, And if you're familiar with Stephen King, I
- 31:11Speaker 6: know Steven's pretty familiar as well. That's that's a pretty
- 31:15Speaker 6: big character development a lot of his books and eventually,
- 31:19Speaker 6: you know, adapted films like that character arc like that
- 31:23Speaker 6: happens all the time, and the bullies are just, you know,
- 31:26Speaker 6: they're just the the effect of what happens because this
- 31:29Speaker 6: thing was able to manipulate them, I mean, from every
- 31:31Speaker 6: Stephen King story has that. So I just never actually
- 31:35Speaker 6: really thought about I mean, I guess I think of
- 31:37Speaker 6: Arnie as a nerd, right, But then I also think, like,
- 31:40Speaker 6: what if it was Kevin Bacon, it wouldn't be able
- 31:42Speaker 6: to possess him like he had already start off badass,
- 31:44Speaker 6: and then you'd have to wonder if you could get worse.
- 31:46Speaker 5: So that's the opposite. It like makes him speaker. It's
- 31:51Speaker 5: just like, I don't know, man. It's it's interesting because
- 31:55Speaker 5: you have the sequences and they bring us up a
- 31:57Speaker 5: few times in the commentary where when Christine is doing
- 32:00Speaker 5: the you know, committing the murders, going after the bullies,
- 32:03Speaker 5: the windows are fully blacked out, and he kind of
- 32:07Speaker 5: says like, you know, it could be because Arnie's behind
- 32:12Speaker 5: the wheel and I just don't want you to see him,
- 32:15Speaker 5: or it could be that nobody's in the car and
- 32:17Speaker 5: it was just a choice to hide the stuntman. It
- 32:19Speaker 5: was easier to just black out the windows that we
- 32:22Speaker 5: didn't see anybody in it. And you know, the end
- 32:24Speaker 5: of the movie doesn't really clear it up. You're still
- 32:27Speaker 5: not sure who was really you know, if it was
- 32:31Speaker 5: Arnie behind the wheel. If he is behind the wheel,
- 32:34Speaker 5: is he even controlling the car or is he just
- 32:38Speaker 5: in it? For the car to do its bidding. Who knows.
- 32:41Speaker 5: I think if the car is able to completely fix itself,
- 32:46Speaker 5: then the car has the ability without Arnie to go
- 32:48Speaker 5: out and do whatever.
- 32:49Speaker 6: It needs, and couldn't if he actually like assigned a
- 32:52Speaker 6: female character to the car, because that's his inferiority insecurity,
- 32:57Speaker 6: whatever character flow where he's he can't seem to find
- 33:01Speaker 6: a romantic partner. He can find it in this And
- 33:03Speaker 6: I'll give you the power to get the gal that
- 33:05Speaker 6: you want, but then I'll become jealous, like let's cut
- 33:09Speaker 6: you off. See I just started thinking about Yeah, all
- 33:11Speaker 6: of a sudden, he just takes over the world once
- 33:13Speaker 6: he's got the car for confidence.
- 33:16Speaker 4: Well, I feel like it takes like his darkest desires,
- 33:19Speaker 4: and I feel like it amplifies him because obviously I
- 33:21Speaker 4: don't feel like he gets like the validation from anyone
- 33:24Speaker 4: at school, and obviously, you know Arnie, I feel like
- 33:27Speaker 4: it's like constantly overlooked, right, and he doesn't have like
- 33:32Speaker 4: the confidence to stand up for himself or you know,
- 33:34Speaker 4: pull all these girls. It's not until he comes into
- 33:36Speaker 4: contact with Christine where it's like kind of uh helps
- 33:41Speaker 4: him develop like almost like a backbone and the confidence
- 33:43Speaker 4: to be able to like kind of carry himself in
- 33:45Speaker 4: a different type of way that I think if he
- 33:47Speaker 4: didn't have that interaction with Christine like that, I don't
- 33:50Speaker 4: know if we would ever see that.
- 33:52Speaker 5: Sometimes though, it could be much simpler, where Christine is
- 33:55Speaker 5: simply a leech. It just draws power, and the end
- 33:59Speaker 5: goal is not to do anything with Arnie besides gain
- 34:05Speaker 5: essentially full control, which is why she tries to kill Lee.
- 34:09Speaker 5: That's why she kills the bullies, and then in the
- 34:13Speaker 5: end Arnie. She's gonna kill Arnie anyway, you know what
- 34:16Speaker 5: I mean, She's gonna just suck everything from him, every
- 34:19Speaker 5: bit that you can, and then eventually you're so obsessed
- 34:23Speaker 5: that you end up dying in the car. That's what
- 34:26Speaker 5: happened to a previous owner. That's what happened to Darnell's brother, right.
- 34:30Speaker 5: It took everything from him. He turned on his family,
- 34:33Speaker 5: he turned on his wife, he turned on his kids,
- 34:35Speaker 5: to the point where he literally died in the car.
- 34:38Speaker 5: It's just like a leech sucking the life out and
- 34:42Speaker 5: for no other reason than just being a possessive entity.
- 34:47Speaker 4: Well you kind of see it like over the course
- 34:49Speaker 4: of the film. I mean obviously we'll get into a
- 34:51Speaker 4: little bit later, but just like Arnie's overall appearance, I mean,
- 34:54Speaker 4: it kind of goes from like these these warm tones
- 34:58Speaker 4: and you know, he seems like very oun to earth,
- 35:00Speaker 4: than by the end of it, it's like almost like
- 35:02Speaker 4: this pale look on his face. He just has like
- 35:05Speaker 4: a completely different, like kind of like a darker appeal,
- 35:09Speaker 4: you know. Just I know that they touched on that
- 35:12Speaker 4: in the commentary, but I thought that was like a
- 35:13Speaker 4: really interesting, uh stylistic choice.
- 35:16Speaker 6: The hues of his skin. He almost looks like a
- 35:18Speaker 6: lost boy in some scenes. You know.
- 35:20Speaker 4: It's weird.
- 35:21Speaker 5: Yeah, it's just interesting because every time I watched this
- 35:24Speaker 5: movie three times in preparing for this, and each time
- 35:28Speaker 5: I was kind of focusing on something different, and each
- 35:32Speaker 5: theory that I created in my head like fit. And
- 35:35Speaker 5: I know that's probably you know, I'm looking for the
- 35:37Speaker 5: certain cues. I'm looking forward to justify it in my brain.
- 35:41Speaker 5: But at the end, I think, really, I think all
- 35:44Speaker 5: analysis is worthy as long as you're not going out
- 35:47Speaker 5: of control. You know, I could take whatever I want
- 35:49Speaker 5: from a movie. But it does seem like Arnie is
- 35:52Speaker 5: just another person in a line of people that this
- 35:57Speaker 5: car will forever continuously do. There's no rhyme or reason
- 36:01Speaker 5: outside of just that's what it does.
- 36:06Speaker 6: Right.
- 36:06Speaker 5: And it's funny because the whole time I was about
- 36:09Speaker 5: going after the bullies, she doesn't even go after the
- 36:11Speaker 5: bullies until they destroy her. So it's actually, and you know,
- 36:16Speaker 5: the only reason they destroy her is to get back
- 36:17Speaker 5: at Arnie. So it's actually she's doing her own bidding.
- 36:21Speaker 5: She's not even doing it on behalf of Arnie. So
- 36:24Speaker 5: the leech theory works even better in that sense, you
- 36:30Speaker 5: know what I mean, because it's just endlessly it's it's why,
- 36:35Speaker 5: it's why she kills Oh my god, why am I
- 36:39Speaker 5: forgetting the name of who owns the shop that Darnell? Yeah,
- 36:45Speaker 5: yeah yeah Darnell yeah yeah. Earlier I said Darnell's brother,
- 36:48Speaker 5: I did I did not?
- 36:49Speaker 6: I did not?
- 36:52Speaker 5: Yes yeah yeah lebe yeah. So it's it's just sort
- 36:59Speaker 5: of heard doing your own vidding, and Arnie is a
- 37:03Speaker 5: tool in that, you know what I mean. It's like
- 37:06Speaker 5: Arnie for some reason feels good. Arnie takes care of her,
- 37:10Speaker 5: and through that she's able to be taken care of
- 37:15Speaker 5: and go out and do her own bidding.
- 37:18Speaker 6: No, it's interesting I don't know.
- 37:22Speaker 5: I love the moment in this commentary early on when
- 37:25Speaker 5: John Carpenter talks about how he's unable to attend the
- 37:28Speaker 5: premiere of his own movies.
- 37:31Speaker 4: What do he say, like, basically every time he's been
- 37:33Speaker 4: to him before in the past, like something bad happens.
- 37:36Speaker 6: Yeah, it's coming right off the thing right, just like, oh,
- 37:40Speaker 6: he needs to make an excuse to k not go.
- 37:42Speaker 5: He's like, something always happens. But I think the best
- 37:45Speaker 5: insight here is actually from Keith Gordon, because at this
- 37:48Speaker 5: point Keith Gordon had directed a couple movies, and he
- 37:51Speaker 5: talks about how weird it is that premiere's work the
- 37:56Speaker 5: way they do, which is essentially the studio asking the
- 37:59Speaker 5: audience to, right when the movie is over, give a
- 38:02Speaker 5: nu miracle rating of the movie. And he says, how
- 38:06Speaker 5: strange that is because essentially what you're creating is people
- 38:11Speaker 5: sitting down and thinking about their rating because they have
- 38:14Speaker 5: to give it when a movie's done, instead of just
- 38:16Speaker 5: enjoying it without having to deliver anything when you're done,
- 38:20Speaker 5: which I wanted to talk to you guys about because
- 38:23Speaker 5: it's been almost two years since I stopped rating movies
- 38:29Speaker 5: on letterbox and To be clear, I love letterbox. I
- 38:34Speaker 5: just log movies. I don't actually assign them like a
- 38:37Speaker 5: star rating. Because I found myself watching movies and thinking about, oh, okay,
- 38:45Speaker 5: so far, this is a three star movie. To me,
- 38:47Speaker 5: you know, this is a four star movie. And I
- 38:49Speaker 5: needed that. I needed to kick that shit out because
- 38:51Speaker 5: I just wasn't watching the movies for what they were,
- 38:53Speaker 5: so I stopped. Do you guys think this is still
- 38:58Speaker 5: a problem today, living in a letterbox instantaneous like criticism,
- 39:05Speaker 5: social media society. And I'm referencing this in the way
- 39:08Speaker 5: of like how many out of theater reactions we get,
- 39:13Speaker 5: how so quickly people want to get their opinion out
- 39:16Speaker 5: about the movie when there's no time to just enjoy it.
- 39:20Speaker 5: They're not sitting on the movie. There's even memes out
- 39:23Speaker 5: there about how quickly credits kicking and people are already
- 39:26Speaker 5: on letterbox giving it or rating, hitting it, you know
- 39:28Speaker 5: what I mean, doing their thing.
- 39:30Speaker 6: Do people not drive home and think about the movie
- 39:33Speaker 6: before they even like that's the best part of the movie,
- 39:36Speaker 6: is reflecting on the movie. Chris is right, though, don't
- 39:40Speaker 6: do that. Let's hear what Stephen thinks. I don't do that.
- 39:43Speaker 4: Myself. I like to give it some time. Though exactly
- 39:47Speaker 4: what Josh was saying. I feel like sometimes there's films
- 39:50Speaker 4: that I walk out of the theater and I can't
- 39:53Speaker 4: say that I have like a definitive rating or letter
- 39:58Speaker 4: grade or I guess whatever you want to assigned to it.
- 40:01Speaker 4: I mean a lot of times I have to kind
- 40:03Speaker 4: of like sit on it. And the more than more
- 40:05Speaker 4: that I find myself thinking about the movie, usually I
- 40:07Speaker 4: feel like in my mind, like, you know, this is
- 40:09Speaker 4: days later, but I feel like that that's when I
- 40:11Speaker 4: know like I found a good one, right, I would say,
- 40:14Speaker 4: like more recently, like Obsession, it was kind of based
- 40:18Speaker 4: on uh like the film checked a lot of the
- 40:22Speaker 4: boxes for me. It wasn't just that everyone's talking about
- 40:25Speaker 4: it in the way that they are. I just kind
- 40:27Speaker 4: of wanted to make my own educated decision on, you know,
- 40:29Speaker 4: whether or not I like the movie.
- 40:32Speaker 6: I try not. It's weird. I don't usually like hype
- 40:36Speaker 6: or people are liking something. I usually I don't usually
- 40:39Speaker 6: want to watch it because I like being I like
- 40:42Speaker 6: horrible movies usually, so what's popular and trendy A lot
- 40:46Speaker 6: of times I don't. I don't align with it, but yeah.
- 40:49Speaker 6: I watched Hokum Tuesday night, and I knew when I
- 40:53Speaker 6: was taking shower the next morning, I dreamt about it.
- 40:56Speaker 6: I thought about it in the shower. I got to
- 40:58Speaker 6: work and I started talking to my friends about it.
- 41:00Speaker 6: And then it is immediately like, oh, this fucking great movie.
- 41:03Speaker 6: You know, but it I don't know. I gotta stew
- 41:06Speaker 6: on them for a little while, you know. Yeah, the
- 41:09Speaker 6: back rooms. I'm still not sure how I feel. I
- 41:11Speaker 6: think I'm I am the middle of something, you know,
- 41:13Speaker 6: But if I talk to Steven about it, I might
- 41:15Speaker 6: get a better perspective of See, I didn't know that
- 41:17Speaker 6: about it, and then I start to change my numbers.
- 41:19Speaker 6: So why just go immediately?
- 41:21Speaker 4: Yeah, some say, Josh and I never loved the back rooms.
- 41:25Speaker 5: Still, as good news is good news is there's audio
- 41:30Speaker 5: commentaries in the back rooms. As you can do because
- 41:32Speaker 5: you guys are.
- 41:33Speaker 4: Still there, you guys can just lay me there.
- 41:35Speaker 6: Then if that's the case, a copy of a copy yeah, oh.
- 41:39Speaker 5: Yeah, yeah, I don't know. I don't I mean, you know,
- 41:43Speaker 5: if I watch a movie and it's my third time
- 41:44Speaker 5: watching it and I'm just jumping on to log it
- 41:47Speaker 5: that I watch it on letterbox or added to a
- 41:49Speaker 5: list that I don't mind as much. But this need
- 41:53Speaker 5: to like instantaneously get out and give your opinion I
- 41:57Speaker 5: think is incredibly jaded because you're not giving. And I
- 42:00Speaker 5: know people say, oh, it's an out of theater reaction,
- 42:03Speaker 5: and then in my full review that's really how I think,
- 42:05Speaker 5: but I still don't it's quick. It almost is right,
- 42:11Speaker 5: because it's like how fast, how fast can you be
- 42:15Speaker 5: the person to get the first word up about a
- 42:18Speaker 5: movie like scary Movie six. I went on Instagram and
- 42:21Speaker 5: I came across like seven out of theater reactions last night,
- 42:25Speaker 5: and I'm like, clearly everybody here was fighting to get
- 42:29Speaker 5: and there were three of them were in the same
- 42:31Speaker 5: parking lot, Like I saw three different angles of the
- 42:33Speaker 5: same theater. So at one point all three of them
- 42:37Speaker 5: were recording out of you know, like sometimes they're fun.
- 42:42Speaker 6: To do, but yeah, I know, people gotta let that
- 42:44Speaker 6: breathe a little bit, man, I think you have to.
- 42:47Speaker 5: Like That's that's why I love The show Man because
- 42:50Speaker 5: for a week, two weeks, I get to me and
- 42:54Speaker 5: Steve get to dive into a movie and really just
- 42:56Speaker 5: like we live this movie for an x amount of time.
- 42:59Speaker 5: And then when we finally get on here and it
- 43:01Speaker 5: all comes out into words and sentences. Then all of
- 43:05Speaker 5: a sudden, it all comes together. You're like, oh, ship,
- 43:07Speaker 5: hold on.
- 43:08Speaker 6: That's how I feel. I'm gonna watch it again, Elliot.
- 43:12Speaker 5: I love the auto shop fight scene. This has always
- 43:17Speaker 5: been a favorite scene of mine, mostly because if I
- 43:21Speaker 5: could be anybody physically from any movie, it would be Buddy.
- 43:28Speaker 5: Yeah you bully grow No no, I no, no no.
- 43:32Speaker 5: I don't want to be I said, physically, I don't
- 43:34Speaker 5: want to be Buddy's personality. But if I could choose
- 43:36Speaker 5: a look of Josh Avatar, if I could be an avatar,
- 43:41Speaker 5: if I could pick an avatar, I would pick Buddy
- 43:43Speaker 5: because I would be rip off John Travolta.
- 43:46Speaker 4: He's got quite then on him, his hair is pretty
- 43:49Speaker 4: any movie character, this is who you're picking, is your avatar.
- 43:54Speaker 6: He's he's kind of a dick the entire movie.
- 43:56Speaker 5: But no, I'm actually gonna pick Vandenburg Stuart Charno. I
- 44:00Speaker 5: want to be a tall Ginger.
- 44:01Speaker 6: I'm just gonna be it.
- 44:02Speaker 5: Here's just always in the background.
- 44:04Speaker 4: Oh my goodness.
- 44:08Speaker 5: You know I I love this auto shop scene mostly
- 44:12Speaker 5: because I love that Buddy is thirty five years old
- 44:15Speaker 5: and still.
- 44:18Speaker 6: Seriously.
- 44:18Speaker 5: Secondly, we all know that switchblades are like the most
- 44:22Speaker 5: dangerous knife ever made. Like those things are straight to jail.
- 44:27Speaker 5: There's no you know you're going right the booking if
- 44:29Speaker 5: you have one of those. It's crazy to pull this
- 44:32Speaker 5: out in the auto shop. And first of all, it's
- 44:34Speaker 5: a big bitch move to have four of you against
- 44:38Speaker 5: one poor Arnie, Like, come on, man, it's not.
- 44:42Speaker 6: Don't even explain why they're picking on him, really, Like, yeah,
- 44:45Speaker 6: you don't even they don't. We start the movie off
- 44:47Speaker 6: with a good reason to pick on him. And when
- 44:51Speaker 6: that when the shop teacher comes up and he's like
- 44:54Speaker 6: two feet shorter than Buddy and he's like shaking him,
- 44:57Speaker 6: and you're like he's gonna get fucked up here because
- 44:58Speaker 6: you can see Buddy's eyes turned like yeah, yeah, I'm
- 45:01Speaker 6: thirty five, dude.
- 45:03Speaker 5: Yeah.
- 45:04Speaker 4: I remember like reading this and Carrie and I just
- 45:09Speaker 4: this is like in middle school, and I'm thinking to myself, like,
- 45:12Speaker 4: is this what high school's gonna be? Like? These fucking bullies, man,
- 45:15Speaker 4: they're like they're like next level bullies, man.
- 45:17Speaker 6: And they're always worse in the books because they have
- 45:19Speaker 6: a lot more dialogue than the movies.
- 45:21Speaker 4: You know, crazy, Yeah.
- 45:24Speaker 5: Yeah, Buddy is crazy this first of all, when when
- 45:26Speaker 5: he stabs his his poor lunch bag. The amount of
- 45:30Speaker 5: yogurt that spills out of that thing, Dude, so much yogurt, man, Like,
- 45:34Speaker 5: there's no way that that was more than your average.
- 45:37Speaker 6: Right, Come on, that's not the little yell plate single,
- 45:44Speaker 6: you know, yeah, yeah, yeah, that's that's a cordy yogurt.
- 45:50Speaker 5: I I'm a technical nerd. I love hearing how movies
- 45:53Speaker 5: are made and how they're shot and all that stuff.
- 45:56Speaker 5: And I love this moment because John Carpenter talks about
- 45:59Speaker 5: how this tire fight scene was intentionally shot in what
- 46:03Speaker 5: was called like a close up fight, so they treated
- 46:07Speaker 5: it like a traditional fight scene, but it was all
- 46:09Speaker 5: done in tight shots. There is no wide shot, there's
- 46:12Speaker 5: no there's barely even any mediums going on. And he
- 46:16Speaker 5: said that one it kind of created these little character marionettes.
- 46:20Speaker 5: We were really able to pay attention to each character's
- 46:23Speaker 5: role in this because we have we have Buddy, we
- 46:26Speaker 5: have his friends there, Eventually Dennis comes down, Arnie is there,
- 46:31Speaker 5: and then the shop teacher joins. But he also said
- 46:35Speaker 5: it was cool because you actually get to see the
- 46:37Speaker 5: actors playing out the scene. Yeah, there's no something because
- 46:42Speaker 5: if you're shooting it tight, then you're able to cut
- 46:45Speaker 5: and it's not as dangerous as oh, we're gonna do
- 46:47Speaker 5: a wide and we're going to see you slip on
- 46:50Speaker 5: the yogurt and fall, you know what I mean, yeah,
- 46:53Speaker 5: or anything like that. So I actually like that, and
- 46:56Speaker 5: I actually think it's staged very well because until he
- 46:59Speaker 5: pointed that out, I never even noticed that it was
- 47:03Speaker 5: intentionally shot that way.
- 47:05Speaker 6: And you can see it like it's so close, like
- 47:08Speaker 6: it just feels really smooth though, like the cut scenes
- 47:11Speaker 6: and the way that it's edited, like it feels like
- 47:14Speaker 6: it's quick actions, just like boom boom boom boom boom
- 47:17Speaker 6: escalated so quickly, really quickly. Though, didn't Arnie drop his
- 47:21Speaker 6: damn lunch bag on the way to school somehow that
- 47:24Speaker 6: yogurt would have spilled out there. He spills the trash
- 47:28Speaker 6: and goes everywhere and then his lunch falls. He's just
- 47:31Speaker 6: a clutch from the beginning. So I don't buy the
- 47:32Speaker 6: whole yogurt thing. John put us over with a little
- 47:35Speaker 6: bit too much yogurt.
- 47:36Speaker 4: I just I just want to know why he has
- 47:37Speaker 4: so much.
- 47:39Speaker 5: What I think is what I think is that his
- 47:43Speaker 5: mom gave him one of those like three packs that
- 47:46Speaker 5: has like the what are the rings that like gets
- 47:49Speaker 5: stuck on turtles and the you know, I mean there's
- 47:52Speaker 5: like three yogurts and that, and you can never get
- 47:54Speaker 5: them out. Like I tear those things to pieces just
- 47:56Speaker 5: trying to give one yogurt out of my fridge. But
- 47:59Speaker 5: I never twiz yeah exactly. Then ever, I think that's
- 48:01Speaker 5: what was happening. And there was three and then when
- 48:03Speaker 5: the knife goes in, it just penetrates all all three
- 48:06Speaker 5: one was probably previously damaged. So he can break we.
- 48:10Speaker 6: We can continue breaking down thout it.
- 48:16Speaker 5: And I love that it cuts. First of all, the teacher,
- 48:19Speaker 5: the shop teacher is great, and I love that Buddy
- 48:22Speaker 5: is afraid of him just because he's older. Yeah, it's
- 48:26Speaker 5: but also I love the straight lying he's lying, I
- 48:30Speaker 5: swear to God, the car.
- 48:31Speaker 6: It's like, yeah, but when he stamps his foot, that
- 48:35Speaker 6: part's awesome, dude.
- 48:37Speaker 5: The best moment is when he gets sent to the
- 48:40Speaker 5: office and he goes, i'll get you.
- 48:43Speaker 6: Yeah, he like does a little almost like a grease
- 48:47Speaker 6: the mood, like a musical spin move like he's hecking
- 48:51Speaker 6: people on the way out. Man, He's for real.
- 48:55Speaker 5: And then I love we cut to the car with
- 48:58Speaker 5: Arnie and and Dennis driving. It's just well, that wasn't
- 49:01Speaker 5: too bad of a first day. I love that so much.
- 49:05Speaker 4: Or he's barely keeping it together.
- 49:07Speaker 5: Yeah, he's falling apart. Only for a minute though, because
- 49:10Speaker 5: we're about to find Christ.
- 49:14Speaker 6: We skipped over Kelly Preston's character though, because before the
- 49:17Speaker 6: before the fight scene and the shop scene were introduced
- 49:21Speaker 6: to Kelly Preston, who wants to talk to Dennis. Dennis
- 49:24Speaker 6: is interested in Lee, who's interested in really nobody? And
- 49:27Speaker 6: why was Kelly Preston even? I mean she's more of
- 49:31Speaker 6: a cush than Lee, to be honest, But you think so.
- 49:34Speaker 6: I think so because what's her name? She was on
- 49:36Speaker 6: Bay Kelly Preston. Man, she's the real deal. But she
- 49:42Speaker 6: just she shows up at the football scene and she's cheerleading.
- 49:45Speaker 6: It's just interesting that you get the locker scene. We
- 49:48Speaker 6: see Kelly Preston for no reason, maybe just eye candy
- 49:51Speaker 6: because John makes a couple of not creepy comments in
- 49:54Speaker 6: the commentary, you know, but they're both kind of like, God,
- 49:57Speaker 6: she's a beautiful woman still and I'm like, hey, guys,
- 49:59Speaker 6: Jesus Christ, the weirdest.
- 50:01Speaker 5: Moment is and I know it's not intentional, but I
- 50:04Speaker 5: have to laugh. You have to laugh at it. And
- 50:06Speaker 5: it's when they're talking about Alexandra Paul who plays Lee,
- 50:10Speaker 5: and how sweet she was, and Keith Gordon says something
- 50:13Speaker 5: like it it's so awesome when you find these actresses
- 50:17Speaker 5: who are just like so innocent and untouched, and you're like,
- 50:21Speaker 5: that's so weird.
- 50:23Speaker 6: Yeah, it's like they're beautiful, but they don't have an attitude,
- 50:26Speaker 6: so they'll actually talk to guys like me. And it's
- 50:28Speaker 6: like Arnie, the stereotype is in the commentary. Now, Doc,
- 50:32Speaker 6: you're better than that. You were in Jaws two? Man?
- 50:35Speaker 5: Oh yeah, yeah, which okay. Steve texted me earlier. He
- 50:39Speaker 5: texted me out of the blue and when do you
- 50:41Speaker 5: think John Carpenter actually really likes Shawls two?
- 50:44Speaker 4: Do you think, dude? I feel validated now because I
- 50:46Speaker 4: really like Jaws two.
- 50:48Speaker 6: But I'm I'm a huge Jaws fan. But well, he's like,
- 50:50Speaker 6: you're the only one that can make that joke. We'll
- 50:53Speaker 6: get there. But yeah, yeah, pretty funny.
- 50:56Speaker 5: No, dude, Lee is my if I had to shoes
- 50:58Speaker 5: between the two guys. I think Lee is adorable.
- 51:01Speaker 6: Yeah, I'm going Roseanne and.
- 51:03Speaker 5: It reminds me. It reminds me of oh my god,
- 51:08Speaker 5: it reminds me of like not like not another teen movie.
- 51:12Speaker 5: How like all of a sudden, all the guys want
- 51:13Speaker 5: to talk to her. You know, she's new to the school,
- 51:15Speaker 5: and all of a sudden everybody wants to be a
- 51:16Speaker 5: part of it.
- 51:18Speaker 6: She just always seemed like kind of mean in some movies,
- 51:21Speaker 6: you know, like Battlefield Earth and Jerry Maguire. So Kelly
- 51:25Speaker 6: pressing for me? All right, okay, okay, attitude, I need
- 51:29Speaker 6: an attitude.
- 51:30Speaker 5: Listen, though, the locker moment with Arnie is genius, the
- 51:34Speaker 5: fact that Dennis hits it and is able to unlock it,
- 51:37Speaker 5: and then Arney shuts it again and he can't get it.
- 51:43Speaker 6: To mention the ladies here movies.
- 51:45Speaker 5: Moving on to the car, please please, Carpenter complimenting there,
- 51:52Speaker 5: there's this long shot when we cut away from the
- 51:54Speaker 5: autobody fight to Arnie and Dennis in the car. It's
- 51:58Speaker 5: one take where the car is kind of a position
- 52:00Speaker 5: on the hood and you see them driving, and I
- 52:04Speaker 5: love that. Carpenter mentions the slow ass right turn they
- 52:07Speaker 5: make because it was on a toe rig and this
- 52:09Speaker 5: big truck with fighting had to make this right turn and.
- 52:12Speaker 6: Could take their time as the car.
- 52:15Speaker 5: Honestly, now it's going to ruin that scene.
- 52:18Speaker 6: I never noticed that I've seen five hundred times.
- 52:21Speaker 5: It's the slowest right turn I've ever seen.
- 52:25Speaker 6: I just thought they really wanted to focus in on
- 52:27Speaker 6: their conversation. I was like, man, you guys, just take
- 52:29Speaker 6: it forever. Look what is he driving a charger or something? Dude?
- 52:36Speaker 5: But Carpenter, so to break down the scene, it's a
- 52:38Speaker 5: long take. They make the right hand turn, we go up.
- 52:41Speaker 5: Arnie sees Christine out of the left of the car
- 52:43Speaker 5: and tells Dennis to back up, and then as Dennis
- 52:46Speaker 5: is backing up, the camera begins to shift to the right,
- 52:49Speaker 5: where we come to that beautiful shot.
- 52:51Speaker 6: Of the one of the best shots of the movie.
- 52:53Speaker 6: That shot is so awesome.
- 52:55Speaker 5: Funny you say that because I love Carpenter going, oh man,
- 52:59Speaker 5: this is actually a pretty good like some style, you
- 53:02Speaker 5: know what I mean. He's like I love hearing him
- 53:05Speaker 5: go back and be like, oh man, we're actually pretty
- 53:07Speaker 5: that's pretty good.
- 53:09Speaker 6: Yeah.
- 53:10Speaker 5: I have a note here just because when when you
- 53:13Speaker 5: go back to especially I think I love the sixties,
- 53:16Speaker 5: seventies and eighties film film so much because the camera
- 53:19Speaker 5: can just sit and there is motion because it's attached
- 53:22Speaker 5: to a car, so there's motion. It's not just a
- 53:26Speaker 5: tripod shot. But they didn't have to cut anything, just
- 53:31Speaker 5: let it go. This is like a minute and a
- 53:33Speaker 5: half single shot that tells so much story. You have
- 53:37Speaker 5: a character moment between Arnie and Dennis and the car
- 53:40Speaker 5: we're traveling to a location. We have Arnie seeing the
- 53:44Speaker 5: car and then still no cut. They literally reverse and
- 53:50Speaker 5: then you have the reveal of Christine, all in the
- 53:53Speaker 5: same take, which is just an incredible rhythm to have.
- 53:59Speaker 5: And any more I feel like, wouldn't this wouldn't happen.
- 54:02Speaker 5: Directors would not allow this to happen, Like studios would
- 54:05Speaker 5: not allow this to happen.
- 54:08Speaker 6: Right, rhythm is completely correct with that shot because you're
- 54:11Speaker 6: just in the car with them. It's so smooth, man.
- 54:14Speaker 5: Yeah, it just And I never noticed this shot before. Obviously,
- 54:21Speaker 5: I remember the moment when we when he begins reversing
- 54:24Speaker 5: and you see Christine because I love the framing when
- 54:27Speaker 5: we see Christine, because you have like the overgrown like
- 54:30Speaker 5: weeds in front of it, and there's almost like a
- 54:32Speaker 5: trail that leads there's these leading lines that force you
- 54:35Speaker 5: to focus on that red, which I love. But I
- 54:39Speaker 5: never noticed that this big long take, and this last
- 54:42Speaker 5: time I was watching it, I was like, fuck, dude,
- 54:43Speaker 5: this is really good. That this just keeps going and
- 54:47Speaker 5: it's such a perfect way to quickly get a shot
- 54:50Speaker 5: done and efficiently but still create that rhythm. So I
- 54:56Speaker 5: love it, Love it. Carpenter at one point asked Keith Gordon,
- 55:02Speaker 5: why do you think he fell in love with this
- 55:04Speaker 5: piece of shit car? On the commentary, he literally says
- 55:07Speaker 5: that the Heath Gordon and we've already talked about this before,
- 55:11Speaker 5: about the supernatural forces at play that we think. I
- 55:17Speaker 5: don't know if here's what I want to know. Okay,
- 55:22Speaker 5: if if they're driving home, if Dennis is driving Arnie home,
- 55:28Speaker 5: is this Have they never gone down this road before? Like?
- 55:32Speaker 5: Where did they go that?
- 55:33Speaker 6: All of a.
- 55:33Speaker 5: Sudden he comes across this house and this car.
- 55:38Speaker 6: And that shack has beat the hell up, like you
- 55:41Speaker 6: would notice it is beat. It's like run down, you know,
- 55:45Speaker 6: there's like maybe a broken down gas pump and crapy,
- 55:48Speaker 6: it's trashed. It's just like it's backwards Alabama, back in there.
- 55:52Speaker 6: How did you not notice there was a car in there?
- 55:55Speaker 5: But I love dude. When John Carpenter mentions, like he says,
- 55:59Speaker 5: you see that garage, like right there, that shack. Keith
- 56:02Speaker 5: Gorne's like yeah, and he's like that's somebody. That was
- 56:04Speaker 5: somebody's house.
- 56:05Speaker 6: He's like that, Yeah, we didn't we didn't build that. Yeah,
- 56:10Speaker 6: we put a car in front of.
- 56:11Speaker 5: It, which I love so I love it so much.
- 56:16Speaker 4: Man.
- 56:18Speaker 5: This is around this moment. There's a lot of talk
- 56:21Speaker 5: at this point in the commentary where they he questions
- 56:24Speaker 5: Keith Gorton a lot just about you know, his career,
- 56:27Speaker 5: about acting, about how he feels with rehearsals, and there's
- 56:31Speaker 5: great back and forth between them that aren't directly speaking
- 56:35Speaker 5: about anything that we're seeing in the movie. And at
- 56:38Speaker 5: one point when they when Arnie comes home with the car,
- 56:41Speaker 5: the kitchen scene where Dennis is drinking the glass of milk,
- 56:45Speaker 5: John Carpenter actually says, man, there's a lot of dialogue
- 56:48Speaker 5: in this movie. It's just a lot of talking scenes.
- 56:53Speaker 5: So it's at around this point though, he begins talking
- 56:57Speaker 5: about the Panaglide, which is the which assists a lot
- 57:03Speaker 5: with the motion in the movie. And he talks about
- 57:05Speaker 5: how he first began using the panic glide for the
- 57:08Speaker 5: POV shots and Halloween and a lot of places use
- 57:11Speaker 5: it in a place of a Dolly because it was
- 57:14Speaker 5: more convenient to use instead of having to put down
- 57:16Speaker 5: Dolly tracks and stuff. And Keith brings up a good
- 57:20Speaker 5: point and he talks about how it's very dream like.
- 57:24Speaker 5: It's sort of this endless motion that the whole movie,
- 57:29Speaker 5: the camera's always moving. It's very rare that it's locked off.
- 57:34Speaker 5: Even later on in the movie, there's a moment when
- 57:36Speaker 5: Arnie gets out of the car and the camera just
- 57:38Speaker 5: real quick like shifts back and then shifts forward. And
- 57:41Speaker 5: there's all these little camera motions in the movie that
- 57:44Speaker 5: do feel loa.
- 57:47Speaker 6: Maybe that's why it's so cozy. The only time it
- 57:50Speaker 6: really ever kind of stops is when he's in the
- 57:52Speaker 6: hospital and it's still panning the room a little bit,
- 57:56Speaker 6: you know. So, Yeah, he talks a lot about the
- 58:00Speaker 6: and the panic Glide in those write them around this
- 58:03Speaker 6: part of the commentary, and then I started paying attention
- 58:05Speaker 6: to like, oh, like, every time we have motion, we're
- 58:07Speaker 6: just like creeping up on it and there's this buttery
- 58:11Speaker 6: kind of no man coziness. Yeah.
- 58:14Speaker 5: Yeah, dude, Steve, do you prefer if you're if you're
- 58:18Speaker 5: if the camera's moving in a movie that you're watching,
- 58:20Speaker 5: do you prefer a handheld or do you prefer the
- 58:22Speaker 5: smooth of a Dolly track or a panic glide or
- 58:24Speaker 5: anything like that.
- 58:26Speaker 4: I'd say probably the Dolly track glide. I just I
- 58:29Speaker 4: don't know what it is. There's just something that I
- 58:31Speaker 4: feel like some of the shots just hold up a
- 58:33Speaker 4: lot better as a result of it.
- 58:35Speaker 6: Yeah, it feels more cinematic, I think too. Yeah, oheels
- 58:39Speaker 6: like you're watching like Ben Hurr or something like. It
- 58:41Speaker 6: feels very I don't know, like it has authenticity, like
- 58:45Speaker 6: immediately when I see that in a movie compared to
- 58:47Speaker 6: like a director just running in with it and you're like, ah,
- 58:50Speaker 6: it's it's jitter right.
- 58:52Speaker 5: So well, I would point if anybody has no idea
- 58:56Speaker 5: what we're talking about, look at anything Spielberg has ever done,
- 59:00Speaker 5: because Spielberg is the master of moving the camera and
- 59:03Speaker 5: actually utilizing single takes, but but building different blocks in
- 59:08Speaker 5: the storytelling. There's a moment in Jaws when they find
- 59:12Speaker 5: this that the sign has been you know, written on
- 59:16Speaker 5: and in that scene alone, that whole conversation scene is
- 59:19Speaker 5: a single I think that whole scene is a single take,
- 59:22Speaker 5: but there's like six different blocking shots happening in it.
- 59:27Speaker 5: So he moves out and it becomes a wide, and
- 59:30Speaker 5: then he moves in and it becomes a tight like
- 59:32Speaker 5: a close up, and then the camera moves back out
- 59:34Speaker 5: and kind of becomes a medium. Spielberg is the king
- 59:38Speaker 5: of blocking. So that's when we talk about motion in film.
- 59:42Speaker 5: That's who I want you to think of visually.
- 59:45Speaker 6: Think of Raiders of the Lost Arc as well, like
- 59:47Speaker 6: the airplane sequence, like the big fight in Raiders of
- 59:51Speaker 6: the Lost Arc that is excellent blocking, Like, yeah, he's
- 59:55Speaker 6: a master.
- 59:56Speaker 5: Yeah, incredible man, absolutely incredible. And there's a moment around
- 1:00:01Speaker 5: this part of the movie that I want to bring
- 1:00:02Speaker 5: up to you guys, because I love when a movie
- 1:00:07Speaker 5: can visually tell you that something has changed. And there's
- 1:00:11Speaker 5: a moment when he when So there's a moment after
- 1:00:19Speaker 5: we see Arnie go and drop the car off at
- 1:00:23Speaker 5: the shop where he's running a booth. There's a moment
- 1:00:27Speaker 5: when Dennis comes to the house and there were plans
- 1:00:31Speaker 5: I guess for him and Arnie to see a movie.
- 1:00:33Speaker 5: It's not like explained very well. But he shows up
- 1:00:36Speaker 5: to pick up Arnie and Arnie says he can't go,
- 1:00:39Speaker 5: and the mom gets upset because it and is it
- 1:00:44Speaker 5: that no, I'm sorry, I'm gonna get mixed up forgive me.
- 1:00:48Speaker 5: When Dennis leaves the house after he first drops a
- 1:00:54Speaker 5: car off, Dennis is at the house and the parents
- 1:00:56Speaker 5: getting in the argument and stuff, and he's leaving. The
- 1:00:58Speaker 5: camera stays on Dennis's car as he's leaving the house.
- 1:01:02Speaker 5: I got it mixed up in my brain. As he's
- 1:01:04Speaker 5: even the camera just stays on Dennis's hood and it's
- 1:01:07Speaker 5: sort of a long shot of Dennis just driving down
- 1:01:10Speaker 5: the road, and you can see that he's in distress,
- 1:01:12Speaker 5: like he's got a lot on his mind. His friend
- 1:01:14Speaker 5: is going through something that he can't explain right, he
- 1:01:18Speaker 5: can't put his finger on it. And I never really
- 1:01:21Speaker 5: thought about that more until the scene where he shows
- 1:01:27Speaker 5: up to pick him up and Arnie ditches on the
- 1:01:30Speaker 5: plants because he's gonna go on the date. And Arnie
- 1:01:34Speaker 5: walks out of the house and the camera pushes in
- 1:01:39Speaker 5: on him when he's walking out, because suddenly he has
- 1:01:42Speaker 5: the jacket on, his hair is done different, he's not
- 1:01:45Speaker 5: wearing glasses.
- 1:01:46Speaker 6: He's got a shadow to him.
- 1:01:47Speaker 5: It's like, yup, he's got a shadow to him. And
- 1:01:50Speaker 5: what I realized was happening in the scene previous, last
- 1:01:55Speaker 5: time Dennis left the house, that is the last time
- 1:01:59Speaker 5: he ever gonna see Arnie as he knows it, that's
- 1:02:03Speaker 5: the last time he's seeing his friend as his friend.
- 1:02:06Speaker 5: And he can sense that something is changing, maybe comes.
- 1:02:10Speaker 4: More and more corrupted as as the rest of the
- 1:02:12Speaker 4: film goes on.
- 1:02:14Speaker 5: Yeah, yeah, but think about it. Imagine like you're watching
- 1:02:17Speaker 5: your best friend go through something, right, and you he's
- 1:02:22Speaker 5: slowly changing. You leave the house and you're like, fuck, dude,
- 1:02:25Speaker 5: like what happened to my friend? Like that's really that's
- 1:02:29Speaker 5: a tough thing to go through. And in these two scenes,
- 1:02:34Speaker 5: we visually, through just simple storytelling, can see the change occur.
- 1:02:40Speaker 5: And when Dennis leaves the house that night, he is
- 1:02:44Speaker 5: never gonna see his friend the same way again.
- 1:02:47Speaker 4: I mean, couldn't she almost use this as like a
- 1:02:50Speaker 4: metaphor for like addiction, Oh, in a way, you know,
- 1:02:53Speaker 4: I mean I think it draws parallels to you know,
- 1:02:56Speaker 4: maybe like if you have like a friend or a
- 1:02:57Speaker 4: loved one who's deal with like substance abuse or something
- 1:03:02Speaker 4: along those lines. I mean, there's always gonna be shades
- 1:03:04Speaker 4: of that person there. But you know, I think like
- 1:03:07Speaker 4: when somebody gets caught up in something like that, as
- 1:03:09Speaker 4: in with this film Being Christine, I mean, you know,
- 1:03:14Speaker 4: it's it's never gonna be the same person as how
- 1:03:16Speaker 4: you initially knew him before you know, all that went down.
- 1:03:19Speaker 6: And they made it seem like that the dynamic between
- 1:03:22Speaker 6: the family and when Dennis was included in some of
- 1:03:24Speaker 6: those arguments, like she's putting him in the middle saying, hey, man,
- 1:03:28Speaker 6: look what you're doing to your friend. I don't really
- 1:03:29Speaker 6: like your behavior. You know, like you've changed, Like you
- 1:03:32Speaker 6: can see like domestic stuff happening, and you can see
- 1:03:37Speaker 6: his best friend. Like Dennis is like, hey, this is
- 1:03:38Speaker 6: the point of no return, but he's like, I can
- 1:03:40Speaker 6: still get him out of here. Maybe we can, And
- 1:03:43Speaker 6: so he makes like something he'd like to do, and
- 1:03:45Speaker 6: then yeah, he cancels, and then he's just straw.
- 1:03:49Speaker 5: It's just well Dennis. Dennis is the easiest blame for
- 1:03:53Speaker 5: the parents because Dennis is pretty much every like exonifies
- 1:03:59Speaker 5: everything that it seems like Arnie is turning into right.
- 1:04:01Speaker 6: The loud car.
- 1:04:02Speaker 5: He's hat from Muscle Car. It's loud. They the mom
- 1:04:05Speaker 5: references that literally the beginning, this noise pol music's too loud,
- 1:04:10Speaker 5: whether it be the attitude. So he's the easiest blame
- 1:04:13Speaker 5: for them as an excuse for Arnie changing or an
- 1:04:16Speaker 5: influence for Arnie changing. And poor Dennis is just as
- 1:04:21Speaker 5: distraught about his friend as the parents are, you know,
- 1:04:23Speaker 5: and he's the parents are giving him no parents are
- 1:04:26Speaker 5: giving him no leverage. You're like, oh, this is your fault.
- 1:04:28Speaker 5: What do you what do you mean? You didn't stop
- 1:04:30Speaker 5: him from buying the car? And he's like, he wanted
- 1:04:32Speaker 5: the car. He bought the car. I couldn't stop him.
- 1:04:34Speaker 5: He bought the car. I told him, Yeah, I tried
- 1:04:37Speaker 5: to tell him, But what am I going to do? Like,
- 1:04:40Speaker 5: and he tries. Even in the scene, you know, when
- 1:04:42Speaker 5: he is buying the car, he says like, hey, why
- 1:04:43Speaker 5: don't we come back tomorrow? You know, it's like, hey, overnight,
- 1:04:46Speaker 5: think about this.
- 1:04:46Speaker 6: Overnight, we'll He gives him, dude, see if it's still here,
- 1:04:50Speaker 6: Let's see if there's anything else in your price rings
- 1:04:52Speaker 6: that's maybe newer, that doesn't need the same work, you know. Yeah,
- 1:04:56Speaker 6: he gives them an out. He's he's a great best friend.
- 1:04:59Speaker 6: He's a thing all of American but also really close
- 1:05:02Speaker 6: with him, not too jockey like, he's a He kind
- 1:05:05Speaker 6: of is put in both worlds.
- 1:05:06Speaker 4: In this movie.
- 1:05:07Speaker 6: Yeah, and parents like, don't trust him, but you're a
- 1:05:10Speaker 6: last line of defense. Man. Heez got our kid back.
- 1:05:13Speaker 5: I love too from the perspective of twenty twenty six
- 1:05:16Speaker 5: that he paid two hundred and fifty dollars for the car,
- 1:05:19Speaker 5: and I love even more that he asks that. He
- 1:05:22Speaker 5: asked Lebray, Oh he said it was three You said
- 1:05:25Speaker 5: it was three hundred. Yeah, that works. I thought you
- 1:05:28Speaker 5: said it was two fifty. Yep, that'll do.
- 1:05:30Speaker 6: That'll Yeah.
- 1:05:32Speaker 4: It negotiating its finest.
- 1:05:35Speaker 6: Yeah, right.
- 1:05:36Speaker 5: But it's just interesting to me. I love because I
- 1:05:38Speaker 5: never picked up on that before, like that difference. And
- 1:05:41Speaker 5: I don't even know if that was intentional. Dennis leaving
- 1:05:43Speaker 5: the house, he's just draw his friend is changing. And
- 1:05:45Speaker 5: then the next time we see Arnie is that moment
- 1:05:49Speaker 5: where he's changed, and you have that that Dolly zoom
- 1:05:53Speaker 5: in on him as he's coming out of the house
- 1:05:55Speaker 5: as like a beat. Okay, it's different.
- 1:05:57Speaker 6: It's cool that John like lets you drive up the
- 1:06:00Speaker 6: muscle car. It follows him his walk up to the door.
- 1:06:04Speaker 6: He's got like, you know, prom night nerves just coming
- 1:06:07Speaker 6: up to ask him out, almost like is this okay? Man?
- 1:06:09Speaker 6: Can we still hang out? You can feel his anxiety
- 1:06:11Speaker 6: and his tension like just on his face, and then
- 1:06:14Speaker 6: the way that he just keeps shooting and walking up
- 1:06:16Speaker 6: and Arnie comes out. Yeah. I mean it's pretty powerful.
- 1:06:19Speaker 6: You're like, oh, there's a okay, the car's in charge now.
- 1:06:23Speaker 5: Well, I when I ask you, guys, what do you
- 1:06:26Speaker 5: think it is about this movie that stands out among
- 1:06:30Speaker 5: John Carpenter's filmography because Keith Gordon specifically mentions in the
- 1:06:35Speaker 5: commentary that visually this movie is very different and to
- 1:06:38Speaker 5: the point where John Carpenter doesn't even have an answer
- 1:06:42Speaker 5: that there's no blood rescator. Yeah, He's like, there's no blood.
- 1:06:46Speaker 5: It looks like the lighting is unlike anything you've ever
- 1:06:48Speaker 5: done before. There's a float of this movie you've never
- 1:06:51Speaker 5: done before. Carpenter doesn't even have an answer.
- 1:06:53Speaker 6: I almost feel like this was the safe movie after
- 1:06:56Speaker 6: making the thing, Like maybe he you know, he was
- 1:07:01Speaker 6: worried about sticking in Hollywood after like a It's it's
- 1:07:05Speaker 6: crazy to think that the thing was so panned now,
- 1:07:07Speaker 6: but I feel like he just wanted to do something safe,
- 1:07:10Speaker 6: and I think Stephen King wanted him originally and then
- 1:07:13Speaker 6: he started making something else. But I don't know if
- 1:07:16Speaker 6: that totally answers it. I just feel like John wanted
- 1:07:18Speaker 6: to do the right thing. There's no gore. He threw
- 1:07:21Speaker 6: some f bombs in there, there's the you know, mother
- 1:07:24Speaker 6: effort when they're kind of arguing, he's choking the dad
- 1:07:26Speaker 6: out just to get that R rating. It's crazy to
- 1:07:28Speaker 6: think also that they thought that if this movie wasn't
- 1:07:31Speaker 6: rated R, they'd lose half of their audience. Yeah.
- 1:07:34Speaker 5: Yeah, well you have to think too, Carpenter coming off
- 1:07:37Speaker 5: the thing. The thing was a fucking bomb at the time, dude,
- 1:07:40Speaker 5: Critics didn't like it. It hated the money, Like you're coming
- 1:07:45Speaker 5: off of you're coming off of that and at this
- 1:07:47Speaker 5: time you're still the director of Halloween, so you're still
- 1:07:49Speaker 5: gonna get you know, credit, And it's easy for him
- 1:07:53Speaker 5: now to say, oh, yeah, that didn't really bother me.
- 1:07:55Speaker 5: But come on, man, you think it like you come
- 1:08:00Speaker 5: up like the thing is, it's it's blows my mind
- 1:08:03Speaker 5: that that movie was not received well, I know at release,
- 1:08:07Speaker 5: because we look back at it and it's like a
- 1:08:10Speaker 5: fucking masterpiece. So it's it's crazy, and it had to
- 1:08:14Speaker 5: be in his head going into Christine, like, fuck, do
- 1:08:16Speaker 5: you think they play this?
- 1:08:18Speaker 6: Maybe he also was watching things that Stephen King movies
- 1:08:22Speaker 6: have been adapt like because the Dead Zone was Cronenberg
- 1:08:26Speaker 6: and that was eighty three, you had Kujo a year earlier,
- 1:08:30Speaker 6: you had Georgiamiro, you know, with Creep Show, Carrie de
- 1:08:35Speaker 6: Palma seventy six, So it's like there could have been
- 1:08:39Speaker 6: pressure to get this problem. I don't know, maybe, but yeah,
- 1:08:42Speaker 6: I don't I don't know.
- 1:08:44Speaker 5: I mean I think I think sometimes there's just directors
- 1:08:50Speaker 5: that get a project that just works for them, Like
- 1:08:56Speaker 5: it's just on a creative level, on a visual level,
- 1:09:01Speaker 5: the crew that you're surrounded with, the cinematographer you work with,
- 1:09:04Speaker 5: which John Carpenter tends to work with the same crew. Yeah, yeah,
- 1:09:07Speaker 5: pretty much over and over and over again. Some projects
- 1:09:12Speaker 5: are just like maybe he had a little bit more
- 1:09:16Speaker 5: freedom to figure out how to move the camera. Things
- 1:09:20Speaker 5: were just clicking, right, he.
- 1:09:22Speaker 6: Was just trusting the process.
- 1:09:24Speaker 5: Maybe more now, Yeah, maybe yeah, because this movie feels
- 1:09:27Speaker 5: very confident, like from page one, and you also have
- 1:09:31Speaker 5: you know, you have a Master of Horror and John
- 1:09:33Speaker 5: Carpenter adapting a Master of Horror Stephen King project. It's
- 1:09:38Speaker 5: like perfect synchronicity, you know, just to absolute titans of
- 1:09:43Speaker 5: a genre, albeit different formats, and it just the material
- 1:09:48Speaker 5: worked for both styles perfect.
- 1:09:52Speaker 6: And maybe there was less pressure. You know, there is
- 1:09:55Speaker 6: still special effects we're going to get to obviously they're
- 1:09:57Speaker 6: pretty incredible, but maybe just the aack of having to
- 1:10:00Speaker 6: have creatures and gore and pressure. I don't want to
- 1:10:03Speaker 6: hog all them. We'll here's Steven's take too, but just
- 1:10:06Speaker 6: thinking about it is like this is just an all
- 1:10:07Speaker 6: American kind of throwback to a fifties horror movie. So
- 1:10:12Speaker 6: maybe that was appealing to him too.
- 1:10:15Speaker 4: Yes, that's what I was gonna say it, because I
- 1:10:17Speaker 4: know you were mentioned like how this film compared to, like,
- 1:10:20Speaker 4: you know, some of other Carpenter films, How this one
- 1:10:23Speaker 4: feels so different. But I think that it's an interesting
- 1:10:27Speaker 4: contrast between Obviously this is supposed to take place during
- 1:10:31Speaker 4: rite that during the eighties for the film, she had
- 1:10:34Speaker 4: that eighties like suburban field to it, but then it's
- 1:10:36Speaker 4: like in contrast to like the fifties car culture, and
- 1:10:40Speaker 4: you know, we initially start off the film like that,
- 1:10:42Speaker 4: but it's very like romantic sized. I don't think a
- 1:10:44Speaker 4: lot of his other films really stretch it to this extent.
- 1:10:48Speaker 4: I think that that's like one thing, Like I was
- 1:10:51Speaker 4: trying to kind of put my thumb on it, but
- 1:10:53Speaker 4: I think that this is probably like the most like
- 1:10:54Speaker 4: lush and romantic film that Carpenter has in his filmography.
- 1:10:59Speaker 5: Yeah right, I mean I think I think Starman is
- 1:11:02Speaker 5: pretty romantic. Yeah, just saying I'm just just saying, man,
- 1:11:08Speaker 5: just saying, what do you guys think about? What's your
- 1:11:10Speaker 5: what's your thoughts on? Uh? Like, you go to a
- 1:11:13Speaker 5: drive and what kind of what kind of food do
- 1:11:14Speaker 5: you get? You do popcorn?
- 1:11:16Speaker 6: You do a Burger popcorn for sure. If they have
- 1:11:20Speaker 6: an icy machine, man, I'm tearing that ship up. Usually
- 1:11:23Speaker 6: Coca Cola if they got an icy A lot of
- 1:11:26Speaker 6: people are hot dog people, Yeah, big hot dog that Yeah.
- 1:11:31Speaker 4: Bring my own food to the drive.
- 1:11:34Speaker 5: Yeah you're rolling up with chicken breast and broccoli.
- 1:11:39Speaker 4: No, but they're like near the drive in, they have
- 1:11:41Speaker 4: a couple like hot chicken spots. Out there. So that's like, yeah,
- 1:11:45Speaker 4: you just kind of low key bringing that in and
- 1:11:47Speaker 4: you know it's like no one's checking your vehicles.
- 1:11:50Speaker 5: So what hot chicken spot you have in Michigan.
- 1:11:53Speaker 4: We have Dave's Hot Chicken.
- 1:11:56Speaker 6: We have that.
- 1:11:56Speaker 4: Yeah, so we have that.
- 1:11:58Speaker 6: And then we just got what's your what's your heat level?
- 1:12:01Speaker 6: What's your heat level of Daves?
- 1:12:03Speaker 4: I can go pretty hot, but I know that there's
- 1:12:06Speaker 4: we had one spot around here kind of locally where
- 1:12:10Speaker 4: you actually had to sign a waiver because it was
- 1:12:12Speaker 4: so hot. So yeah, yeah, oh they have that. Okay.
- 1:12:18Speaker 4: I that was the first time I had seen it
- 1:12:20Speaker 4: at this other spot.
- 1:12:20Speaker 6: But yeah, I don't go that high the reaper. You
- 1:12:24Speaker 6: have to sign the waiver for it'll jack your stomach
- 1:12:27Speaker 6: up for a few days. I'm just I can picture
- 1:12:28Speaker 6: you in the rig with like orange fingers from the
- 1:12:32Speaker 6: hot chicken. You got the piece of bread just to
- 1:12:35Speaker 6: use to like get your hands cleaned.
- 1:12:37Speaker 4: Listen. I mean when when Dawn of the Dead and
- 1:12:39Speaker 4: Day of the Dead had that double feature. I pulled
- 1:12:41Speaker 4: up with like, you know, some hot chicken sandwiches tenders
- 1:12:44Speaker 4: and man like, I was good maybe about three forces
- 1:12:49Speaker 4: the way through and then like my stomach was torn up.
- 1:12:51Speaker 5: Son, you can you door dash to the drive in?
- 1:12:54Speaker 5: Will they allow that?
- 1:12:55Speaker 6: See, that's the best thing I've heard.
- 1:12:57Speaker 4: How would they find you? I feel like you'd have
- 1:12:58Speaker 4: to like drop a pin.
- 1:13:00Speaker 5: Yeah, you're like, I'm in the drive in, I'm at
- 1:13:01Speaker 5: parking on, I'm in.
- 1:13:05Speaker 4: I'll meet you in the middle. I mean, i'll meet
- 1:13:06Speaker 4: you over at the concession stand right awkward.
- 1:13:13Speaker 5: You're like, you, dude, come hang out. Oh he's your door.
- 1:13:16Speaker 5: I'm gonna I'm gonna get on your your drivers. Like, man,
- 1:13:19Speaker 5: I love this movie. You're like, oh, come on, just
- 1:13:21Speaker 5: grab a seat. Man, let's watch like using.
- 1:13:24Speaker 6: The concession for extra napkins and ship.
- 1:13:28Speaker 5: I just have a note here about how Carpenter references
- 1:13:31Speaker 5: Hitchcock again during the scene and the drive in. I
- 1:13:34Speaker 5: do love the rain, the rain, the the weather in
- 1:13:38Speaker 5: in this next series of sequences, it is my favorite.
- 1:13:41Speaker 5: I'm just a rain guy.
- 1:13:43Speaker 6: I think it.
- 1:13:43Speaker 5: Adds so much visually. Carpenter talks about how it was
- 1:13:46Speaker 5: such a pain in the ass dealing with the water
- 1:13:50Speaker 5: and the rain machines and everything, but the bright light
- 1:13:54Speaker 5: and dude, it looks so good in that fucking white light.
- 1:13:58Speaker 6: In the car when gets God, holy shit, dude, I
- 1:14:01Speaker 6: want every movie to feel like that. That feels like
- 1:14:04Speaker 6: you're watching The Blob. You know, it's so classic.
- 1:14:07Speaker 5: It is favorite, and I love the Carpenter talks about
- 1:14:11Speaker 5: how little they He's like, I don't think we we
- 1:14:14Speaker 5: introduced the guy in the car next to them enough.
- 1:14:17Speaker 5: Like you have that one sequence when they're arguing and
- 1:14:19Speaker 5: they come back and you can see him looking through.
- 1:14:23Speaker 4: You know.
- 1:14:24Speaker 5: But then he's like, what does Carpenter saying? He goes, Oh,
- 1:14:26Speaker 5: this is the underdeveloped hero of the right.
- 1:14:30Speaker 6: It's going to save the day. I also didn't know
- 1:14:33Speaker 6: that they had multiple cars, like where they had cut
- 1:14:36Speaker 6: away so that they got up a car that was
- 1:14:38Speaker 6: in half so he could get better tight shots. That
- 1:14:40Speaker 6: was super interesting.
- 1:14:42Speaker 4: When they served different purposes for a lot of them, right,
- 1:14:44Speaker 4: like specific ones for like crashes or just kind of
- 1:14:47Speaker 4: like more like like the visual shots that they needed
- 1:14:50Speaker 4: for certain scenes.
- 1:14:51Speaker 5: And he talk about how some were slower, some were
- 1:14:54Speaker 5: built to be faster depending on what they needed for
- 1:14:56Speaker 5: the chase sequences.
- 1:14:57Speaker 6: And apparently they only came in that white. They didn't
- 1:15:00Speaker 6: come in cherry red, so they had to hand paint
- 1:15:02Speaker 6: every car twenty different Plymouth Furies were red that they made.
- 1:15:06Speaker 6: That's crazy. Half as I said, Ali a million of
- 1:15:10Speaker 6: their budget went to just the cars and what eighty three?
- 1:15:14Speaker 5: Listen, man, that's why, that's why I can't find a
- 1:15:16Speaker 5: Plymouth Fury. Twenty of the.
- 1:15:18Speaker 4: Three thousand maid work Chris is on behind are.
- 1:15:21Speaker 5: Gone, dude with the hell?
- 1:15:23Speaker 4: Man, did you not learn anything from this movie?
- 1:15:26Speaker 6: Listen?
- 1:15:27Speaker 5: I learned that I listen. I need love in my life,
- 1:15:30Speaker 5: and I think Christine could be the only Galley give
- 1:15:31Speaker 5: it to you. Oh, I'll make sure my wife doesn't
- 1:15:36Speaker 5: listen to this one. The I wish more than anything.
- 1:15:44Speaker 5: And okay, maybe not the scene when the group of
- 1:15:48Speaker 5: bullies decided to come in and trash Christine right because
- 1:15:53Speaker 5: they know where he's storing the car, they go in,
- 1:15:56Speaker 5: they trash it. I really wish we got the taking
- 1:16:01Speaker 5: a shit on the hood, yes, addition to scene that
- 1:16:04Speaker 5: Junkins brings up later on. See the one thing they
- 1:16:08Speaker 5: didn't show is the shitting on the hood. And I
- 1:16:11Speaker 5: don't know why. I would have loved to have like
- 1:16:12Speaker 5: gotten a quick shot of like a Boucci bent over
- 1:16:15Speaker 5: on the hood.
- 1:16:16Speaker 6: Like doesn't that to be graphic? Just show like, yeah,
- 1:16:19Speaker 6: it's they.
- 1:16:20Speaker 5: Are right, yeah, yeah. And I do love Carpenter talking
- 1:16:23Speaker 5: about how hard it was to actually destroy this car, like.
- 1:16:27Speaker 6: How she almost cuts himself, Yeah, just trying to cut
- 1:16:30Speaker 6: the bench seat. It's like struggling. I started paying atten.
- 1:16:32Speaker 6: I really wound that like three times to see like
- 1:16:34Speaker 6: where he nearly slices himself.
- 1:16:37Speaker 5: I think you could see it. It's like on those
- 1:16:38Speaker 5: first couple wipes, he's really close to his other hand.
- 1:16:42Speaker 6: And he takes that ball paen hammer for the radio.
- 1:16:44Speaker 6: You're like, oh, he's struggling with this car, man.
- 1:16:47Speaker 5: I do love the consistent motif of shooting this car
- 1:16:51Speaker 5: in its spot in the garage, though. It's always that
- 1:16:54Speaker 5: wide shot in the front where Ristine is center framed,
- 1:16:57Speaker 5: because you have you know, you see them grabbing tools
- 1:17:02Speaker 5: and Buddy walks up and it cuts to that same
- 1:17:04Speaker 5: shot that we see a little bit later on in
- 1:17:06Speaker 5: the show me scene. We have that same shot and
- 1:17:10Speaker 5: Buddy jumps on the hood and then jumps on the
- 1:17:12Speaker 5: roof of the car, and the camera just pans up
- 1:17:15Speaker 5: enough to kind of like widen the shot a little
- 1:17:18Speaker 5: bit more, and that did the sledgehammer going down through
- 1:17:23Speaker 5: the window to kick off. This assault on the car
- 1:17:27Speaker 5: is harder to watch than anybody dying in this movie.
- 1:17:34Speaker 6: So some of those headlights. Man, Oh my.
- 1:17:37Speaker 5: God, dude, is there a moment in John Carpenter's filmography
- 1:17:44Speaker 5: that gets you quite like the show me scene in
- 1:17:52Speaker 5: this movie? I'm talking like, this is like top tier
- 1:17:57Speaker 5: Carpenter for me, just this sequence and for anybody listening,
- 1:18:02Speaker 5: I'm talking about when Arnie makes up with Lee and
- 1:18:08Speaker 5: she says, now, I'll go with you to get Christine
- 1:18:11Speaker 5: and they go to the garage and there's this great shot,
- 1:18:16Speaker 5: like a panicle eyeshot of them walking up and then
- 1:18:19Speaker 5: Arnie sees this mess of a car left. The car
- 1:18:24Speaker 5: is fucking destroyed, and it is just like the worst
- 1:18:30Speaker 5: thing that could have ever happened to Arnie because he
- 1:18:33Speaker 5: becomes so mean to Lee. And when we cut back,
- 1:18:38Speaker 5: it's a nighttime and he's with the car and he
- 1:18:43Speaker 5: hears a brief like it's almost like a ting of metal,
- 1:18:49Speaker 5: almost as if the car is trying to repair itself,
- 1:18:53Speaker 5: and we turns around. Yeah, we cut to that shot
- 1:18:57Speaker 5: again in front of Christine. It is a slight the
- 1:19:00Speaker 5: lower angle, and I love the Carpenter says this serves
- 1:19:04Speaker 5: no purpose to the story. It just looked cool for
- 1:19:07Speaker 5: you to walk out in front of Christine this way.
- 1:19:10Speaker 5: It did look cool, and those headlights kick on and
- 1:19:13Speaker 5: the food of the music kicks on theme.
- 1:19:19Speaker 6: I mean, I'm trying to there. There are some moments
- 1:19:21Speaker 6: in The Fall. Are you talking about iconic scenes? Right?
- 1:19:25Speaker 6: Like as far as John Carpenter's filmography.
- 1:19:27Speaker 5: I'm talking about like you watch a scene and you're like, fuck, yeah,
- 1:19:30Speaker 5: this is.
- 1:19:33Speaker 6: Yeah. I mean, it's if it's not the number one,
- 1:19:36Speaker 6: it's way up there. Like, Yeah, there's a couple of
- 1:19:39Speaker 6: scenes in the Fog that I really like, and obviously
- 1:19:42Speaker 6: the thing, but I don't know if those are more like,
- 1:19:47Speaker 6: you know, Gore related, right or just I love the
- 1:19:51Speaker 6: campfire scene with John Housman from The Fall. That's one
- 1:19:55Speaker 6: of my favorite I can fall asleep to that scene
- 1:19:57Speaker 6: is over and oh I love that scene that story.
- 1:20:00Speaker 6: But the Christine, I mean, and then the synth comes
- 1:20:05Speaker 6: in goosebumps thinking about it, Oh god.
- 1:20:08Speaker 5: Dude, yeah yeah, Steve, does this scene hold up for
- 1:20:11Speaker 5: you after all this song?
- 1:20:13Speaker 4: Oh? Absolutely, It's It's wild to me because of like obviously,
- 1:20:17Speaker 4: I mean, Carpenter kind of does a little bit of
- 1:20:19Speaker 4: a deep dive into how that scene was achieved. But
- 1:20:23Speaker 4: I really do feel like it's held up so well
- 1:20:26Speaker 4: all these years later. And then it's like you see
- 1:20:28Speaker 4: films that have come out in more recent years, you know,
- 1:20:31Speaker 4: maybe within like the last couple decades, I just don't
- 1:20:33Speaker 4: think that they hold up quite the same way as
- 1:20:35Speaker 4: a sequence like this.
- 1:20:37Speaker 5: Yeah, this is I actually have a leg piece mapped
- 1:20:41Speaker 5: out for the sequence that I want to get done.
- 1:20:44Speaker 5: I'm still figuring out full color. Yeah, full color. I
- 1:20:48Speaker 5: was thinking about I was thinking about slightly changing the
- 1:20:52Speaker 5: angle of the shot because I thought about getting like
- 1:20:55Speaker 5: having the legs like Arnie's legs and then the beams
- 1:20:58Speaker 5: kind of coming through and you would see cool. But
- 1:21:01Speaker 5: I'm still trying to figure it out. But this moment
- 1:21:03Speaker 5: feels just like you want to talk about a beat
- 1:21:08Speaker 5: in a movie, right, the moment where things are changing.
- 1:21:11Speaker 5: This is that this is that moment where this movie
- 1:21:14Speaker 5: really just comes to life and you're going into the
- 1:21:18Speaker 5: second the third act or the second act. I'm sorry, yeah, yeah,
- 1:21:24Speaker 5: it's yeah, it's about halfway. See and this whole sequence
- 1:21:32Speaker 5: of the car fixing herself is phenomenal, and I'm sure
- 1:21:37Speaker 5: if you're a big enough fan that you're listening to
- 1:21:39Speaker 5: this episode, you already know how this was done. This
- 1:21:42Speaker 5: is the most talked about technical discussion on this movie.
- 1:21:47Speaker 5: But essentially, the whole every every shot of her fixing
- 1:21:52Speaker 5: herself were shot in reverse, and they were actually shot
- 1:21:54Speaker 5: in reverse and then upside down. The cameras were upside down,
- 1:21:58Speaker 5: and essentially they were destroying the car in real life,
- 1:22:04Speaker 5: so they would have these hydraulics and it would essentially
- 1:22:08Speaker 5: like destroy the car. So you have a door and
- 1:22:12Speaker 5: then they pull it in so it crumbles the door in.
- 1:22:16Speaker 5: So then when the film is flipped and played flipped
- 1:22:20Speaker 5: and reversed, it looks like it's fixing itself. It comes out,
- 1:22:24Speaker 5: but it's like it ever feels reversed.
- 1:22:29Speaker 6: No, the way it shows those side mirrors, the when
- 1:22:34Speaker 6: those things kind of pop in, twitch and turn in,
- 1:22:36Speaker 6: it looks so natural. The special effects guy, I know
- 1:22:39Speaker 6: he worked on the thing as well. It's not rob routine,
- 1:22:41Speaker 6: but dude, incredible.
- 1:22:44Speaker 4: Man.
- 1:22:45Speaker 6: Yeah, you can watch that scene over and over. It's
- 1:22:47Speaker 6: so satisfying to see real metal being destroyed and then
- 1:22:51Speaker 6: reanimated like fucking amazing.
- 1:22:53Speaker 4: Dude. I think it was uh Roy Arbergast. That's a
- 1:22:57Speaker 4: special supervisor.
- 1:22:58Speaker 5: Yeah, it's practical, that's the thing. Practicable feel different than CGI.
- 1:23:03Speaker 5: It feels tangible.
- 1:23:04Speaker 6: It's real.
- 1:23:05Speaker 5: You can see the texture, you can see the movement,
- 1:23:08Speaker 5: you can see the light. It's it's just it's unbeatable, man.
- 1:23:12Speaker 5: And then it was so from like no, go ahead,
- 1:23:15Speaker 5: what was your thought?
- 1:23:16Speaker 6: Well, I'm just thinking of the juxtaposition. We've just seen
- 1:23:19Speaker 6: Buddy and the gang, Mucci and them destroying the car,
- 1:23:22Speaker 6: and like even they like they aged the car right,
- 1:23:25Speaker 6: like everything just the paint was chipped, it was just destroyed.
- 1:23:28Speaker 6: And then in just like a scene later you get
- 1:23:31Speaker 6: to see that juxtaposed and it's just like it's so shimmering,
- 1:23:35Speaker 6: Like I mean, it's eye candy, It's I can see
- 1:23:37Speaker 6: why he's attracted to it. Oh yeah, saying Sam getting excited. Man,
- 1:23:43Speaker 6: it's pretty incredible, man, just thinking about him, like, oh, Chris.
- 1:23:48Speaker 5: Then you go to the first death scene of the movie.
- 1:23:52Speaker 5: So late in the movie, finally we're getting to a
- 1:23:53Speaker 5: death scene and this is the first chase sequence with
- 1:23:57Speaker 5: Mucci where he gets up, which first of all, he
- 1:24:00Speaker 5: gets he hitches a ride in a truck to like
- 1:24:02Speaker 5: I don't know where under and over but like it
- 1:24:04Speaker 5: just like randomly gets dropped off and Christine is underneath
- 1:24:09Speaker 5: the overpass in the distance, which.
- 1:24:12Speaker 6: The big slow reveal on her, just slow.
- 1:24:15Speaker 5: It's so good man. And you have the you have
- 1:24:17Speaker 5: the overpass structure creating like these leading lines down to
- 1:24:22Speaker 5: her and you just hear a startup we slowly begin
- 1:24:25Speaker 5: to move over. It's so good man, And I do
- 1:24:29Speaker 5: love how Carpenter talking about how how he felt like
- 1:24:33Speaker 5: he wasn't going to be able to properly shoot the
- 1:24:37Speaker 5: sequence when he finally reaches the loading dock and Christine
- 1:24:41Speaker 5: squeezes her way into that small entrance. He he wasn't
- 1:24:46Speaker 5: sure if he was going to be able to like
- 1:24:48Speaker 5: sell that on screen. He's like, how do I show this?
- 1:24:51Speaker 5: Until they just started doing it and then he's like,
- 1:24:53Speaker 5: oh shit, this is and.
- 1:24:55Speaker 6: We're kind of big fella runs into a loading dock
- 1:24:57Speaker 6: that he can't get out of.
- 1:24:58Speaker 5: Come on that, John Carpenter said that he would jump.
- 1:25:01Speaker 5: He's like, that's where I would go. Come on, which,
- 1:25:04Speaker 5: first of all, if this was happening to me, I
- 1:25:07Speaker 5: would have just climbed on top of her and you
- 1:25:10Speaker 5: know what I mean, like stood.
- 1:25:11Speaker 6: On top of it the whole time.
- 1:25:12Speaker 4: I didn't know you were going with that.
- 1:25:14Speaker 5: He just exact. He just accepts it, man, absolutely accepts it.
- 1:25:21Speaker 5: But another like just nerdy piece of the commentary that
- 1:25:24Speaker 5: I love. It's because it's like the dumbest like like
- 1:25:31Speaker 5: conversation that happens. It's so nerdy. But when Jenkins, who
- 1:25:35Speaker 5: is the detective or the police officer, is talking to
- 1:25:39Speaker 5: Arnie outside of school about his car because he heard
- 1:25:43Speaker 5: that the car was destroyed and now all of a sudden,
- 1:25:45Speaker 5: Muccie is dead. I love that. Carpenter goes on for
- 1:25:49Speaker 5: like ten minutes about the constantly shifting sun in this conversation.
- 1:25:53Speaker 6: For like ten minutes. Yeah, driving him crazy. Man.
- 1:25:57Speaker 5: It's like he's like, you see here, the ladies really
- 1:26:00Speaker 5: good because the sun is coming down. He's like, but
- 1:26:02Speaker 5: then we shift this way and you can see the
- 1:26:04Speaker 5: glare off of all the cars leading.
- 1:26:06Speaker 6: Up to how naturalist skin tone is here. We get
- 1:26:08Speaker 6: a little bit. He'll like start nerding out on it.
- 1:26:11Speaker 6: He does a porch too.
- 1:26:14Speaker 5: Yeah, yeah, awesome, and he's like, Arnie's like overexposed. He's like,
- 1:26:19Speaker 5: I didn't want to put you in full light. He's like,
- 1:26:21Speaker 5: but you know it was this happening.
- 1:26:23Speaker 6: My notes said that John complains about the parking lot
- 1:26:27Speaker 6: that that being part of the lore growing up. Man
- 1:26:30Speaker 6: with the movie. Watching this in the nineties, I just
- 1:26:32Speaker 6: thought that was like just perfectly lit. I was like,
- 1:26:36Speaker 6: that's how it looks in Pasaden. That's I'm like, he's
- 1:26:39Speaker 6: so critical of himself, Like it's just comfortable comfort food
- 1:26:42Speaker 6: for me. Man, keep it coming, jump.
- 1:26:45Speaker 5: Yeah, yeah, well you can tell the difference between real
- 1:26:47Speaker 5: light and the synthetic like looks lighting.
- 1:26:51Speaker 6: It's a trip to when he starts talking about the
- 1:26:53Speaker 6: garage and how he wanted to naturally black out all
- 1:26:56Speaker 6: of the garage so that it was nighttime during the
- 1:26:59Speaker 6: day to get more efficient shots. But he's like, you know,
- 1:27:02Speaker 6: I'm in just Tarcao take more than all of Hollywood
- 1:27:04Speaker 6: to black out this garage. You know, he's like mad
- 1:27:07Speaker 6: about it. It's pretty funny. He has a lot of
- 1:27:10Speaker 6: lighting conversation. He does.
- 1:27:12Speaker 5: Yeah, he does. I love it, man. I will say though,
- 1:27:17Speaker 5: as far as disturbing moments in this movie, for me,
- 1:27:23Speaker 5: the entire sequence of him going after Buddy Dud it
- 1:27:29Speaker 5: is like, and I don't know why. For some reason,
- 1:27:33Speaker 5: every time I watched a movie, these moments get harder
- 1:27:37Speaker 5: and harder for me to watch. And I can't really
- 1:27:40Speaker 5: explain why, because, first of all, I never thought in
- 1:27:44Speaker 5: my life, if somebody is tail getting me with their
- 1:27:46Speaker 5: high beams on, that I should stop and just put
- 1:27:48Speaker 5: it in reverse. I never once thought that, No, which
- 1:27:52Speaker 5: is what Buddy does here. But when they reach the
- 1:27:55Speaker 5: gas station and you have the other friend who is
- 1:28:00Speaker 5: working in the garage, and the way Buddy pulls the
- 1:28:03Speaker 5: car in the car is kind of perfectly in front
- 1:28:06Speaker 5: of the garage bay and cere just dude, Christine just
- 1:28:11Speaker 5: coming in and tanking his car, And I love that
- 1:28:14Speaker 5: he goes, look what he did in my car.
- 1:28:18Speaker 6: He's like up on the up on the lift fixed
- 1:28:20Speaker 6: and something. But then is it is it when he's
- 1:28:24Speaker 6: running away? Is that the disturbing part?
- 1:28:27Speaker 5: Like, it's the friend in the garage. Anytime it's anything
- 1:28:32Speaker 5: with fire, it's the friend in the garage. When Christine
- 1:28:36Speaker 5: hits Buddy's car again and actually pushes it into the
- 1:28:42Speaker 5: garage and the gasoline is leaking, and then a spark
- 1:28:45Speaker 5: happens in the first explosion goes off and you hear
- 1:28:49Speaker 5: what is like the most painful scream. Yeah, in in
- 1:28:53Speaker 5: the sound that it just bothers me so much. But
- 1:28:56Speaker 5: anytime there's fire, it really like carry continue gets harder
- 1:29:00Speaker 5: for me. In the prom scene, for sure.
- 1:29:02Speaker 6: He tight shots on that gas leak and you're like,
- 1:29:04Speaker 6: this is a problem, and then he zooms out. It's
- 1:29:07Speaker 6: like an Amco or something or a golf and it's
- 1:29:10Speaker 6: like the practical explosion. It's like you can't beat that
- 1:29:14Speaker 6: incredible God.
- 1:29:15Speaker 5: And the explosion just keeps getting bigger. Yeah, Like you
- 1:29:20Speaker 5: have the first explosion of the garage, and then it
- 1:29:23Speaker 5: reaches the pump, and then you have another gas station,
- 1:29:29Speaker 5: which or another another gas station, another explosion, and the
- 1:29:33Speaker 5: explosion is huge, like gigantic. And this was actually Bill,
- 1:29:40Speaker 5: I'm looking at your note Steve that this was you
- 1:29:42Speaker 5: wrote down it. This was actually fully built for this
- 1:29:46Speaker 5: explosion sequence. This was a Mobiico gas station that was
- 1:29:49Speaker 5: built by the production.
- 1:29:51Speaker 4: Yeah, they had, I know because we see that specific
- 1:29:55Speaker 4: part where Christine like backs out, and I know that
- 1:29:59Speaker 4: they were like discri I mean, I guess how the
- 1:30:01Speaker 4: stunt man, you know, like there was the whole car
- 1:30:03Speaker 4: obviously is engulfed in flames substantially larger for that part.
- 1:30:08Speaker 4: And then when Christine's actually tracking down buddy as he's
- 1:30:12Speaker 4: running away. The iconic shot you see that the flames
- 1:30:16Speaker 4: kind of have like been more subdued, but there's just
- 1:30:19Speaker 4: something so haunting about that. It's very eerie and creepy,
- 1:30:23Speaker 4: and it's just like, I mean, we kind of obviously
- 1:30:26Speaker 4: are gonna we know, like what the outcome is most
- 1:30:28Speaker 4: likely going to be, but it doesn't take anything away
- 1:30:31Speaker 4: from it though, just very isolated and remote, you know,
- 1:30:35Speaker 4: where he basically you see his demise unfortunately, and it's slow.
- 1:30:41Speaker 5: Christine is not pedaled to a metal going after him,
- 1:30:44Speaker 5: just slowly creeping just enough, yep, just enough that like
- 1:30:51Speaker 5: she's making progress on him, but not at all in
- 1:30:54Speaker 5: a rush to take him out.
- 1:30:57Speaker 6: And just thing to hear that the stunt man could
- 1:30:59Speaker 6: only be in that court for so long because it's
- 1:31:01Speaker 6: a ticking bomb. He's in a fire suit, so they
- 1:31:03Speaker 6: had to change the look of the fire a little bit,
- 1:31:06Speaker 6: you know, so it wouldn't kill the stunt man. I
- 1:31:09Speaker 6: think that effect is actually scarier as it's just like
- 1:31:12Speaker 6: this roaring inferno, like slowly plodding, like almost hitting his
- 1:31:16Speaker 6: heels when he's like hitting the pavement there.
- 1:31:19Speaker 5: Yeah, intend I also didn't think about what Keith Richards. Uh,
- 1:31:24Speaker 5: Keith Richard, Oh my god, get.
- 1:31:27Speaker 4: What?
- 1:31:28Speaker 5: Oh my god, Keith Gordy.
- 1:31:32Speaker 6: Long a long dayigurettes.
- 1:31:35Speaker 5: I love I love that he mentions how the fire
- 1:31:38Speaker 5: is actually sucking the oxygen out of the car. Yeah,
- 1:31:41Speaker 5: that's obviously fire uses oxygen to burn. And I never
- 1:31:44Speaker 5: even thought about that, the car being on fire whole oxygen.
- 1:31:48Speaker 5: So it has to be on a timer. It's scary.
- 1:31:50Speaker 5: On a timer, man, that's really scary. So in reference
- 1:31:56Speaker 5: to commentary discussion, I will say the rest of the
- 1:32:03Speaker 5: movie getting up to them deciding to take action on Christine,
- 1:32:09Speaker 5: you have this great showdown in the garage with the
- 1:32:13Speaker 5: with the big the tractor, the bulleerzer. Yeah, the bulletinezer.
- 1:32:19Speaker 5: Thank you. Most of the commentary track from this point
- 1:32:24Speaker 5: on is really just a good conversation between Keith Gordon
- 1:32:29Speaker 5: and John Carpenter that's not really giving a whole lot
- 1:32:33Speaker 5: of technical insight. I don't think so, Josh, did you
- 1:32:38Speaker 5: get a lot of anything from this moment on?
- 1:32:41Speaker 6: No, they just they kind of set it up, you know, like, hey,
- 1:32:44Speaker 6: we're getting to the end of the film here, and
- 1:32:46Speaker 6: I don't know if that was John just kind of
- 1:32:47Speaker 6: getting bored and ready to be done because the movie
- 1:32:49Speaker 6: is what a buck fifty one hour fifty one or something.
- 1:32:53Speaker 6: So he's just setting this up and they just kind
- 1:32:55Speaker 6: of start talking about how it took us two weeks.
- 1:32:58Speaker 6: There's a cool shot here. This Actually it was hard
- 1:33:00Speaker 6: to line up. Look at the lighting on leave. Dennis
- 1:33:02Speaker 6: can't seem to start the bulldozer. Look he's gonna kill
- 1:33:05Speaker 6: it though. I hope he goes straight. He's yeah. I mean, yeah,
- 1:33:10Speaker 6: I didn't get a ton out of that.
- 1:33:11Speaker 4: Man.
- 1:33:11Speaker 6: That's one of the most iconic scenes. He does mentioned
- 1:33:13Speaker 6: a lot of sexual acts, like over and over, over
- 1:33:16Speaker 6: coming up on the it'soy shot or whatever. You know.
- 1:33:20Speaker 6: I was like, I never thought of that as a
- 1:33:21Speaker 6: little kid. I was just like, Oh, the bulldozers killing
- 1:33:24Speaker 6: it right out Bob the Builder over here.
- 1:33:28Speaker 5: It was funny because Steve and E's notes end at
- 1:33:30Speaker 5: the same place. It ends right after Buddy has ran over.
- 1:33:34Speaker 4: Yeah, I mean, I definitely appreciated the banter that they
- 1:33:39Speaker 4: had back and forth because I, like I said, I
- 1:33:41Speaker 4: felt like, it's like you're just hanging out with one
- 1:33:43Speaker 4: of the guys. But I didn't really feel like that
- 1:33:47Speaker 4: there was like any new insight that we really got
- 1:33:50Speaker 4: out of, like, you know, from this point forward. Yeah,
- 1:33:54Speaker 4: what'd you guys think about the ending? I mean, do
- 1:33:55Speaker 4: you guys feel like it's fulfilling or.
- 1:33:59Speaker 6: I mean, if that's the only way to kill Christine
- 1:34:02Speaker 6: because she's possessed, then I then I guess it makes sense.
- 1:34:06Speaker 6: I'm curious if John, you know, the only other thing
- 1:34:08Speaker 6: I wrote down in my notes, I got a couple
- 1:34:09Speaker 6: of things. I did think that when he's talking about
- 1:34:12Speaker 6: the ending, he's talking about how he's not an artist,
- 1:34:14Speaker 6: so he doesn't use a lot of storyboards, but he
- 1:34:16Speaker 6: will have a guy that will give him some kind
- 1:34:19Speaker 6: of framing and different ideas pov shots that he might
- 1:34:22Speaker 6: want to try. So I'm just curious to see. It'd
- 1:34:24Speaker 6: be awesome if we could see what those other storyboards
- 1:34:26Speaker 6: that he rarely uses actually looks like.
- 1:34:30Speaker 5: Yeah, yeah, maybe there was wan.
- 1:34:33Speaker 4: Yeah.
- 1:34:33Speaker 5: Man, I would love to like get a book of
- 1:34:35Speaker 5: you know me one day to see that stuff. I
- 1:34:38Speaker 5: think the ending, I will say the I would rather
- 1:34:46Speaker 5: get the misdirect ending at the junk yard here with
- 1:34:48Speaker 5: the music over any jump scare at the end of
- 1:34:52Speaker 5: your movie.
- 1:34:53Speaker 6: Yes, I want to think you know Christine could live
- 1:34:55Speaker 6: on somehow, like even today. Yeah, I'm like, no, she's
- 1:34:58Speaker 6: still there. She's gonna possess somebody else because you're.
- 1:35:01Speaker 5: Having this great moment where Christine is a crumpled cube
- 1:35:05Speaker 5: and we hear music and the camera's slowly panning on
- 1:35:11Speaker 5: and then an employee walks by with a radio. George
- 1:35:16Speaker 5: is where the music was coming from.
- 1:35:17Speaker 6: Yeah, that's a great ending.
- 1:35:20Speaker 5: It's a great it's such a great mister ract Man.
- 1:35:24Speaker 5: But I don't think, I mean, personally, I don't think
- 1:35:26Speaker 5: she's ever dead.
- 1:35:27Speaker 6: No, I think that she's still there. I've always and
- 1:35:30Speaker 6: you know, he left it so ambiguous with the thing
- 1:35:33Speaker 6: that maybe that was on purpose, Like I don't know,
- 1:35:36Speaker 6: yeah I did. We didn't talk about my who's your
- 1:35:38Speaker 6: guys' favorite character before we you know, get too.
- 1:35:42Speaker 5: Far favorite character just that we like in the way
- 1:35:48Speaker 5: like oh that's mine?
- 1:35:49Speaker 6: Yeah, Who's Like I guess I don't know, because my
- 1:35:53Speaker 6: favorite character in the movie has changed as I've grown
- 1:35:56Speaker 6: up with this movie and I watch it so often,
- 1:35:58Speaker 6: So I'm just curious what everyone's favorite kind of like,
- 1:36:00Speaker 6: who you relate to the most, or who you enjoyed
- 1:36:02Speaker 6: seeing on screen because there's a lot of big people,
- 1:36:05Speaker 6: but their character actors in the movie.
- 1:36:09Speaker 5: Yeah, I would probably say while I'm thinking, Steve, you
- 1:36:15Speaker 5: have any do you have one off hand that you
- 1:36:19Speaker 5: know of? While I'm kind of looking and figuring this
- 1:36:21Speaker 5: out for myself.
- 1:36:23Speaker 4: I think it's because I remember seeing him in Thief beforehand,
- 1:36:26Speaker 4: but I feel like Darnell played by.
- 1:36:30Speaker 5: Cross, I was, yeah, I was literally thinking it was
- 1:36:33Speaker 5: gonna be Darnell.
- 1:36:34Speaker 4: He's uh, he's definitely got a lot of like he's
- 1:36:40Speaker 4: very like heart like what's the expression, like rough around
- 1:36:43Speaker 4: the edges.
- 1:36:47Speaker 6: Yeah, he does.
- 1:36:49Speaker 5: But he's so funny, like when he's offering Arnie, like
- 1:36:52Speaker 5: you know, he comes over and he's like, uh, think
- 1:36:54Speaker 5: about it too. Yeah, look, he's so nice. He's like,
- 1:36:58Speaker 5: you know, sweep up around here, but a little roll thing.
- 1:37:02Speaker 5: Maybe I'll even throw you a couple of bucks. And
- 1:37:04Speaker 5: Artie's like, y'all think about it. Well, don't think too
- 1:37:08Speaker 5: long about it.
- 1:37:11Speaker 4: I don't think that bit ever gets old.
- 1:37:13Speaker 5: It's the same when he's smoking with Dennis points out.
- 1:37:16Speaker 5: He's like, and I don't want an he's smoking here.
- 1:37:18Speaker 5: Dennis is like, but sir, those guys are smoking.
- 1:37:23Speaker 6: Oh my gosh, He's so good in so many movies,
- 1:37:27Speaker 6: Like it used to be Shitter when I was a
- 1:37:29Speaker 6: little kid, because like I just I remember, is that
- 1:37:31Speaker 6: the guy from Home Alone is that old man Marley.
- 1:37:33Speaker 6: I always thought about that as a kid, So I
- 1:37:35Speaker 6: always liked the guys selling the car, and now it's
- 1:37:37Speaker 6: definitely Darnell. Yeah.
- 1:37:39Speaker 5: There's another Darnell moment that I love, and it's when
- 1:37:43Speaker 5: when they're talking about it's Darnell and another guy talking
- 1:37:46Speaker 5: about how he's putting Christine together. Asked backwards, He's like, look,
- 1:37:50Speaker 5: he's got brand new winshield wipers on a broken windshield.
- 1:37:53Speaker 5: And all the guy goes, but he's got good hands,
- 1:37:56Speaker 5: a Darnagle.
- 1:37:56Speaker 6: Yeah, he's got good It's so relatable, dude, Just guys. Yeah,
- 1:38:05Speaker 6: they're so comfortable in that movie, Like it's a cozy flick.
- 1:38:08Speaker 5: Dude, Yeah, and everybody that's that's kind of I think
- 1:38:11Speaker 5: more of the running theme of the commentary is it's
- 1:38:14Speaker 5: very much like a very lighthearted reflection of the movie
- 1:38:19Speaker 5: more than it is like a technical breakdown. You do
- 1:38:23Speaker 5: have the technical breakdowns and the insights and stuff, but
- 1:38:27Speaker 5: I think, like just hearing if this was Carpenter alone,
- 1:38:30Speaker 5: I don't know if we would be talking about this
- 1:38:32Speaker 5: commentary the same way, you know, with the addition of
- 1:38:35Speaker 5: Keith Gordon.
- 1:38:38Speaker 6: For sure.
- 1:38:40Speaker 5: Oh yeah. They they're they're back and forth, and he
- 1:38:43Speaker 5: sounds like Carpenter. Look, let's be John Carpenter's a grump.
- 1:38:49Speaker 5: Like there's plenty of examples out there, John Carpenter being
- 1:38:53Speaker 5: an absolute grinch about stuff. He sounds like he's having
- 1:38:57Speaker 5: the time of his life until about the hour and
- 1:38:59Speaker 5: thirty minute point and that he's like, Okay, it's done.
- 1:39:03Speaker 6: This was great. I'll see y'all.
- 1:39:05Speaker 5: Yeah, yeah, yeah. So before we wrap up, would you
- 1:39:11Speaker 5: guys recommend this to fans of the movie? To people
- 1:39:14Speaker 5: do you think this commentary track? Like are you giving
- 1:39:17Speaker 5: your watch and listen to this? To people who are listening?
- 1:39:22Speaker 6: Can I throw a caveat on that because I'm not.
- 1:39:25Speaker 6: I'm kind of new to this stuff and y'all are
- 1:39:26Speaker 6: like froz and I'm trusting you guys to leave me
- 1:39:29Speaker 6: down the right path here. So when you're watching a
- 1:39:33Speaker 6: film like Christine and it's the music is so integral
- 1:39:38Speaker 6: to me, like as a fan, one of my favorite
- 1:39:40Speaker 6: carpet like love the movie, love the book. Are there
- 1:39:44Speaker 6: other commentaries where sometimes they include more of the movie audio,
- 1:39:50Speaker 6: or is it pretty common to just when there's a
- 1:39:52Speaker 6: lull in the commentary they boost it up a little bit,
- 1:39:54Speaker 6: because it seemed like they really lowered the volume for
- 1:39:57Speaker 6: most of it until like that the last twenty minutes
- 1:40:00Speaker 6: when John's not talking anymore, then we finally got some
- 1:40:03Speaker 6: movie sounds. So how does that usually work?
- 1:40:07Speaker 4: I mean, Chris, we've seen a number of them. I
- 1:40:09Speaker 4: feel like it varies a little bit depending on the
- 1:40:12Speaker 4: film that they're covering. I feel like, I would say
- 1:40:16Speaker 4: a good portion of it. Me most of the time,
- 1:40:18Speaker 4: it's usually like audio and you know, like banter and
- 1:40:21Speaker 4: commentary back and forth between whoever's the guest on there.
- 1:40:25Speaker 4: But I don't know, I feel like it's like this
- 1:40:29Speaker 4: isn't too far off from some of the ones that
- 1:40:31Speaker 4: we've seen listen to.
- 1:40:33Speaker 5: I mean, this is the ideal audio mix for a commentary.
- 1:40:37Speaker 6: Track, Okay, so just the volume is low so you
- 1:40:41Speaker 6: can really focus on the conversation basically.
- 1:40:44Speaker 5: Yeah. Yeah. And what I do when I'm listening to
- 1:40:46Speaker 5: commentary tracks, I actually turn on the movie subtitles so
- 1:40:50Speaker 5: I can keep references to where I'm at. Beat Wise,
- 1:40:53Speaker 5: and that's.
- 1:40:53Speaker 6: What I had, That's what I ended up doing, you know,
- 1:40:55Speaker 6: ten minutes and I'm like, oh, I need something to
- 1:40:57Speaker 6: keep me on track. I've seen the movie so many
- 1:41:00Speaker 6: times I still wanted to kind of follow.
- 1:41:02Speaker 5: Along exactly exactly. There there are like, as part of
- 1:41:09Speaker 5: a writing project that I'm working on, I'm actually created
- 1:41:13Speaker 5: like a grading system for commentaries, and one of those
- 1:41:16Speaker 5: is audio. And this is ideally what you want where
- 1:41:20Speaker 5: most of the film's audio track is drowned out because
- 1:41:25Speaker 5: the conversation is taking hold, and then you do have
- 1:41:27Speaker 5: that drop out where when the conversation lulls, you bring
- 1:41:30Speaker 5: back the movie audio, which, depending on your setup, does
- 1:41:34Speaker 5: kind of cause some issues because my LGC five is
- 1:41:37Speaker 5: terrible at balancing audio and this commentary track I had
- 1:41:40Speaker 5: to turn up and then all of a sudden they
- 1:41:42Speaker 5: would stop talking and it would be like the loudest
- 1:41:44Speaker 5: moment of the movie. You know what I mean. But
- 1:41:48Speaker 5: I will tell you the complete opposite example I can
- 1:41:52Speaker 5: give you is a movie like Twister with the commentary
- 1:41:56Speaker 5: track with Yondbant and the special effects coordinator. Yeah, the
- 1:42:00Speaker 5: film audio and their commentary audio are the same level.
- 1:42:04Speaker 5: And it's a nightmare.
- 1:42:06Speaker 6: That sounds horrible. So you're listening to Bill Paxton being upset,
- 1:42:09Speaker 6: and you're also got the director with his accent.
- 1:42:13Speaker 5: It's like I remember specifically like getting through the first
- 1:42:16Speaker 5: like quarter of the movie. I got up until the
- 1:42:19Speaker 5: Dorothy when we see Carrie al Wes introduce their version
- 1:42:23Speaker 5: of Dorothy. That little fight scene that happens, and Yon
- 1:42:26Speaker 5: Debond is talking about the construction of the Dorothy and
- 1:42:29Speaker 5: there's a moment when Yon Debond is talking and he
- 1:42:32Speaker 5: says something about, oh I'm building this, and all I
- 1:42:36Speaker 5: heard on the same tone is like it's better than
- 1:42:38Speaker 5: what you sniff. And I kept getting confused as to
- 1:42:41Speaker 5: the audio. I was like, wait, hold on. I was like, wait,
- 1:42:44Speaker 5: what do you say? And then it's like you hear
- 1:42:46Speaker 5: somebody laugh, and then over the laughing of the commentary track,
- 1:42:50Speaker 5: you hear like the I'm not done with you yet
- 1:42:52Speaker 5: of Bill Paxton during the fights. It was so bad
- 1:42:55Speaker 5: I had to turn it off. I was like, I
- 1:42:56Speaker 5: can't do this anymore.
- 1:42:58Speaker 6: So just it just mixed too loud. So you know, yeah,
- 1:43:02Speaker 6: I would say definitely I would recommend it because it
- 1:43:06Speaker 6: felt like I was just I listened to a lot
- 1:43:08Speaker 6: of podcasts anyway, And so maybe that's kind of the
- 1:43:10Speaker 6: caveat is if you already listen to audio on your
- 1:43:13Speaker 6: phone Spotify when you're driving or whatever, then you'll feel
- 1:43:16Speaker 6: right at home. I mean, and if you love the movie,
- 1:43:19Speaker 6: you're gonna get so much more out of it.
- 1:43:22Speaker 5: And I don't know Steve about you, but if I'm
- 1:43:24Speaker 5: familiar enough with the movie, I actually will put on
- 1:43:26Speaker 5: the commentary and not even watch the movie. I will
- 1:43:29Speaker 5: kind of like fuld laundry. You know, the TV is there,
- 1:43:34Speaker 5: for sure. I'm listening to the commentary almost as if
- 1:43:36Speaker 5: I had a podcast.
- 1:43:38Speaker 4: Because I guess it depends on how much time we
- 1:43:41Speaker 4: have leading up to the episodes that we're recording. But
- 1:43:44Speaker 4: I mean, if it's something that I've seen a number
- 1:43:46Speaker 4: of times, kind of going back to what you were saying,
- 1:43:48Speaker 4: it's a little bit easier to not necessarily be like
- 1:43:51Speaker 4: glued to the TV while I'm listening to the commentary.
- 1:43:54Speaker 4: You can kind of still get just as much out
- 1:43:56Speaker 4: of it. But if it's something I haven't seen sometime,
- 1:43:59Speaker 4: I like to catch it with the commentary kind of
- 1:44:01Speaker 4: appreciate the movie like as they're dissecting it, and then
- 1:44:05Speaker 4: even after that, I have like a greater appreciation for
- 1:44:08Speaker 4: the film fresh off the commentary, I'll just go right
- 1:44:12Speaker 4: back into watching it without and then you know, kind
- 1:44:14Speaker 4: of dissect it that way too.
- 1:44:17Speaker 5: Yep. I always follow the same rhythm that I've learned.
- 1:44:20Speaker 5: I learned from somebody on Instagram who talks about watching movies,
- 1:44:24Speaker 5: and he always talks about how he watches a movie
- 1:44:27Speaker 5: and then the second time he like watches a movie,
- 1:44:31Speaker 5: like he sits down, analyzes, pauses, rewinds, and I typically
- 1:44:38Speaker 5: do that as my second and then I'll do the
- 1:44:40Speaker 5: commentary track because at that point I'm pretty familiar with
- 1:44:45Speaker 5: the movie enough that i can listen and pick up
- 1:44:49Speaker 5: on where I'm at. And then usually depending on how
- 1:44:52Speaker 5: much time we have and if I feel the need to,
- 1:44:54Speaker 5: then I'll sort of do that again with the commentary
- 1:44:56Speaker 5: where I'm like hyper focused. And there are some commentary
- 1:44:59Speaker 5: tracks where they really never referenced directly what's on screen
- 1:45:02Speaker 5: at that moment, so sometimes it's not necessary.
- 1:45:07Speaker 4: We've had a few of those where I think it
- 1:45:09Speaker 4: was for one of the Reanimator commentaries where it just
- 1:45:13Speaker 4: felt like it was just some you know, hanging out,
- 1:45:15Speaker 4: and I feel like that they definitely have like those.
- 1:45:18Speaker 4: I mean after all the years of after the film
- 1:45:22Speaker 4: has been released, like they definitely have that like close
- 1:45:24Speaker 4: knit bond. So I didn't feel like, yeah, yeah, it
- 1:45:27Speaker 4: just didn't really feel like that they were like I
- 1:45:30Speaker 4: was getting as much as I wanted to out of
- 1:45:32Speaker 4: the commentary. There was another one on there with Stuart
- 1:45:35Speaker 4: Gordon that I thought was like exceptional, that like I
- 1:45:38Speaker 4: got a little bit more out of.
- 1:45:40Speaker 5: And then there's ones like if you have the Screen
- 1:45:42Speaker 5: Factory Friday the thirteenth that came into box set. The
- 1:45:46Speaker 5: audio commentary on the first movie is actually just interviews
- 1:45:51Speaker 5: from Crystal like memories that were put together and formed
- 1:45:56Speaker 5: just as like a behind the scenes of the movie
- 1:46:00Speaker 5: cut to play like a commentary track. It wasn't actually
- 1:46:03Speaker 5: recorded as a commentary track.
- 1:46:05Speaker 6: And you probably prefer if you could have Sean Cunningham.
- 1:46:09Speaker 5: Oh live there watching the movie.
- 1:46:11Speaker 6: Yeah, yeah, I'd be way better. I would think. See,
- 1:46:13Speaker 6: these are all pro tips because this was like I
- 1:46:15Speaker 6: think I've watched two or three. I did watch Pat
- 1:46:17Speaker 6: Cemetery too, after one of Your Guys' episodes last year,
- 1:46:20Speaker 6: and I really like that that was a cemetery. Mary Lambert, Yeah,
- 1:46:27Speaker 6: I love Mary Lambert.
- 1:46:28Speaker 5: But yeah, I really wish you did a commentary track
- 1:46:31Speaker 5: for Urban Legends, Bloody Mary.
- 1:46:32Speaker 4: I would love to dive in dissect.
- 1:46:36Speaker 5: That dissect into that fun piece of garbage. But yeah,
- 1:46:44Speaker 5: definitely check this out. And as always, like we said previously,
- 1:46:48Speaker 5: don't just go off what we were talking about. Throw
- 1:46:49Speaker 5: this on. Learn it's It's a lot of fun.
- 1:46:52Speaker 6: Man.
- 1:46:52Speaker 5: This is like if you're a horror fan and you
- 1:46:54Speaker 5: love Christine, you love John Carpenter, it feels like you're
- 1:46:57Speaker 5: hanging out with them in the room, you know what
- 1:46:58Speaker 5: I mean. It feels like they're You're in the booth
- 1:47:00Speaker 5: with them and they're chatting it up. There really wasn't
- 1:47:03Speaker 5: much more I could ask.
- 1:47:05Speaker 4: For, you know, it was.
- 1:47:06Speaker 6: It was perfect. I mean, yeah, I loved it. I
- 1:47:09Speaker 6: appreciate you guys having me on to talk about it
- 1:47:11Speaker 6: because I don't think I would have purposely listened to it,
- 1:47:15Speaker 6: and I was wrong.
- 1:47:16Speaker 4: So I feel like, Josh, you got a good one
- 1:47:19Speaker 4: to jump onto, because I feel like this one's pretty accessible,
- 1:47:23Speaker 4: like for someone that isn't as maybe familiar with like
- 1:47:26Speaker 4: audio commentaries, I mean, very informative. I love the conversation
- 1:47:31Speaker 4: that they had how they broke it down. It was
- 1:47:33Speaker 4: very insightful.
- 1:47:34Speaker 6: It seemed like Keith was able, like we've kind of
- 1:47:37Speaker 6: said multiple times, to just get stuff out of John
- 1:47:39Speaker 6: that's more playful. I can't imagine this conversation at twenty
- 1:47:43Speaker 6: twenty six.
- 1:47:46Speaker 5: He would have checked out about twenty five minutes in.
- 1:47:49Speaker 5: It's just been the rest would have just been the
- 1:47:50Speaker 5: rest of the movie's audio.
- 1:47:52Speaker 6: Yeah, horrible.
- 1:47:54Speaker 5: Well, hey, listen, man, Unfortunately I don't know how much
- 1:47:57Speaker 5: you guys know about cars, but yeah, this is expensive
- 1:48:01Speaker 5: these days, and I feel like I gotta I feel
- 1:48:04Speaker 5: like I gotta drop you off and uh and move
- 1:48:06Speaker 5: on with my day. I don't want to be pushing
- 1:48:08Speaker 5: my car home. And honestly, you guys didn't even offer
- 1:48:10Speaker 5: up any gas money. So did you see him, Steve, you.
- 1:48:14Speaker 6: Got Benmo right, look up, man, Yes, we got you. Chris.
- 1:48:18Speaker 4: It's all good.
- 1:48:19Speaker 6: Yeah, man, all right, I'm just around the corner. Yeah, yeah, yeah,
- 1:48:22Speaker 6: of course.
- 1:48:23Speaker 5: Well, hey, Josh, do me a favor. Let people know
- 1:48:26Speaker 5: where they can find yet.
- 1:48:27Speaker 6: Yeah, man, absolutely so. Just beyond the gray media YouTube Instagram.
- 1:48:34Speaker 6: I kind of play around on TikTok once in a while,
- 1:48:36Speaker 6: just taking clips from other videos. But yep, just pretty
- 1:48:39Speaker 6: much mostly YouTube.
- 1:48:42Speaker 5: Hell yeah, yeah, great, definitely go give him a sub
- 1:48:44Speaker 5: give them a follow on Instagram, especially if you're like
- 1:48:47Speaker 5: us and you just love the sickest of the sick

- 1:48:53Speaker 5: I love.
- 1:48:54Speaker 6: Some splatter, love some love some fore Inflix, let's do it, man.
- 1:48:58Speaker 5: You know what's funny, man? I actually was looking at
- 1:48:59Speaker 5: the action the other night and I was like, I
- 1:49:01Speaker 5: wonder if we could do an episode on I can
- 1:49:04Speaker 5: never say the name right? Is it? Permudos? The Fallen Angel?
- 1:49:08Speaker 5: Here's he net that on Earth? Put out the Germans bladder?
- 1:49:12Speaker 6: Are you fling about? Is it?
- 1:49:14Speaker 5: What's the title of that movie? Permudo?
- 1:49:16Speaker 6: Yeah? I think I've got it in there, not not
- 1:49:21Speaker 6: the Mariandorra.
- 1:49:24Speaker 5: Is that that's I'll I'll send it to you when
