- 0:00This is what I call the saddest story ever told.
- 0:03There was once a good and very wise father.
- 0:06He loved his children more than anyone has ever loved his
- 0:10children. They were dazzled by the cheap
- 0:12tinsel and glitz of the world away from home rather than the
- 0:15priceless gifts of their amazing father.
- 0:19By rejecting the gifts of their Father, the children really
- 0:22rejected Him. If the heavens weep over the
- 0:27wickedness of God's children, imagine the tears that flowed
- 0:31when God did not spare His only begotten and innocent Son.
- 0:40Were you there? Did you know?
- 0:45Did you weep? You see, He is not only Christ's
- 0:53Father, He's our father too. Welcome back.
- 1:14My name is Larry Corbridge and this is the Stand Forever
- 1:17series. This is episode 5.
- 1:21The title of this episode is God's Greatest Gifts.
- 1:26In the last episode, we discussed what I call ABC, which
- 1:32seems to me at least to be the central message of the Old
- 1:35Testament and what God taught Adam and Eve in the Garden of
- 1:40Eden and his children through all time.
- 1:45This is essentially what it is a only God can bless you.
- 1:51Only he can cause your heart to beat and give you breath.
- 1:54Only He can preserve and protect you.
- 1:57Only He can give you strength to bear up the burdens of life.
- 2:02Only He can give you power, knowledge, peace and joy.
- 2:05Only He can forgive your sins, heal you, change you, forge your
- 2:11godly soul. Only He can bring you back into
- 2:15His presence. Only He can bless you.
- 2:19Second part. He will do all of that and much
- 2:22more if you remember Him to keep His commandments.
- 2:25Therefore, the conclusion, obviously remember him to keep
- 2:33his commandments. It's the only intelligent thing
- 2:36to do now, from the beginning of time, God has repeatedly invited
- 2:42his children to trust him. As I've said before, not instead
- 2:47of everyone and everything else, but above anyone or anything
- 2:53else he said, Thou shalt have no other gods before me.
- 2:58We also observed a critical broad problem, and that is that
- 3:03we obviously don't keep God's commandments all the time.
- 3:08We don't live perfectly, and the consequences of disobedience are
- 3:15severe. We make mistakes, and when we
- 3:19do, we suffer. Bad things happen.
- 3:24Worst of all, we may withdraw ourselves from the Spirit of the
- 3:29Lord, which is God's presence in this world, and before we know
- 3:34it, we are left unto ourselves, separated from God and His
- 3:39power. And as I've also said before,
- 3:42that is what King Benjamin characterized as our awful
- 3:46situation. It is the worst of all, the
- 3:49essential problem in life. The essential problem in life is
- 3:54separation from God our Father. Without God, chaos, darkness,
- 3:59and death prevail. But before we can understand the
- 4:06worst chaos, darkness and death, we must first understand the
- 4:12best God's greatest blessings, the greatest gifts He offers to
- 4:18his obedient children. Because without those gifts,
- 4:23only the natural state remains chaos, darkness and death.
- 4:29This is what I call the saddest story ever told.
- 4:34There was once a good and very wise father.
- 4:36He loved his children more than anyone has ever loved his
- 4:40children. Everything he did was for them.
- 4:44Because of His great love and wisdom, He sent His children
- 4:49away from home when they were old enough and sufficiently
- 4:52prepared to learn on their own. It gave them many marvelous and
- 4:58unique gifts, masterfully prepared for their growth and
- 5:02development away from home. All of the Father's gifts were
- 5:07truly extraordinary, carefully and painstakingly prepared by
- 5:12Him, but three were the greatest.
- 5:17They were the spring from which flowed all others.
- 5:22Although the gifts were many, they all had one thing in
- 5:26common. They were designed to invariably
- 5:30endow his children with power and joy.
- 5:35But here the story takes an awful turn.
- 5:39What should have been the greatest story ever told became
- 5:42the most tragic because most of the children ignored their
- 5:46father's marvelous gifts. They were dazzled by the cheap
- 5:52tinsel and glitz of the world away from home rather than the
- 5:55priceless gifts of their amazing father.
- 6:00By rejecting the gifts of their father, the children really
- 6:04rejected him. The Father was profoundly hurt,
- 6:10more than we can imagine, and his foolish children were weak
- 6:14and miserable, having refused or neglected the very gifts that
- 6:19would have brought power and enduring joy.
- 6:22And that may or may not be the end of the story.
- 6:28Your Eternal Father loves you more than anyone has ever loved
- 6:33another. All He does is for you and His
- 6:38children. He offers you and all His
- 6:42children everywhere supernal gifts, but most of His children
- 6:47neither received nor rejoice in His marvellous gifts, and as a
- 6:52result they are weak and unhappy, and heaven weeps with
- 6:55them. Can you imagine the sadness and
- 7:00disappointment of our Father if we do not accept His magnificent
- 7:04gifts? When His children ignore Him
- 7:08after all He is done? Enoch saw that not only Heavenly
- 7:13Father, but the whole of the heavens weep when we refuse or
- 7:18neglect His precious gifts. In light of the great gifts our
- 7:24Father offers and the inconceivably high price paid to
- 7:29make them available. Some of the saddest words in all
- 7:34of Scripture are these, and I think you know what they are.
- 7:40For what does the profit a man if a gift is bestowed upon him,
- 7:45and he received not the gift? Behold, He rejoices not in that
- 7:50which is given unto him, neither rejoices in him who is the giver
- 7:55of the gift. So what are the greatest gifts?
- 8:03Our Father offers all of His children everywhere from the
- 8:07beginning of time, His Son, His Spirit, and His life.
- 8:19Those are God's greatest gifts to his children.
- 8:24To accept and receive those gifts is the best of all human
- 8:29conditions. What is the inconceivably high
- 8:34price paid to make them available?
- 8:38The creation? The Fall, the Atonement of Jesus
- 8:44Christ, and all the gods have done and do to bring to pass the
- 8:50immortality and eternal life of man.
- 8:56Ether records in the gift of His Son.
- 8:58Hath God prepared a more excellent way?
- 9:02Words cannot describe, nor can we conceive or measure the
- 9:06height, the breadth, the depth of the gift of God's own Son.
- 9:12Borrowing the words of Mormon, no tongue can speak, neither can
- 9:17there be written by any man, neither can the hearts of men
- 9:21conceive anything so great and marvelous as Jesus Christ, the
- 9:28Son of God, by whom salvation and all good things are
- 9:31possible, as John famously recorded.
- 9:38For God so loved the world that he gave his only begotten Son,
- 9:42that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have
- 9:47everlasting life. For God sent not his Son into
- 9:52the world to condemn the world, but that the world through him
- 9:57might be saved. To contemplate the magnitude of
- 10:02the gift of God's Son, we need only think of Abraham and Isaac.
- 10:09Can there be anything more horrific, anything more
- 10:14repugnant, more unthinkable than a parent who either takes the
- 10:20life of his own child or stands by and allows it to happen?
- 10:27Occasionally we hear of such reports and our heads spin and
- 10:32disbelief and revulsion. Usually such cases involve
- 10:37impairment. Otherwise how could how could a
- 10:41parent conceive, much less commit, such a heinous,
- 10:45indescribably depraved act? And then we have Abraham.
- 10:54Many of us struggle with the events that laid Abraham to
- 10:58place his beloved son Isaac on the altar and raise his knife
- 11:04only to be stopped by an Angel of God.
- 11:08How could he do that? While we are relieved by the
- 11:13saving intervention at the last moment, we remain troubled
- 11:17because of what was required of Abraham and his willingness to
- 11:23do it. I guess we admire obedience at
- 11:28any cost, but we remain unsettled by the terrible prize
- 11:33that was asked in the first place.
- 11:37Even understanding that Abraham learned something about Abraham,
- 11:42even recognizing he demonstrated he would not withhold anything
- 11:47from God, not even his son. We are troubled and find it hard
- 11:51to understand. And maybe, maybe that's the
- 11:56point. Maybe the Abhorrence parched the
- 12:02veil ever so slightly on the horror of Gethsemane, and we
- 12:12glimpsed the awful choice another Father and another son
- 12:18had to make when there was no intervention for them.
- 12:26Maybe Abraham is a bridge at a distance.
- 12:31We may understand the history of God not sparing his son, but not
- 12:36really relate emotionally thinking.
- 12:39Such things are things of gods. And when we think that God his
- 12:46son not sparing, sent him to die, we can scarce take it in.
- 12:54But then we think of Abraham, and we take it in.
- 13:00If we dare, we can relate to Abraham, if not on the level of
- 13:07his obedience, at least on the level of his abhorrence and
- 13:11horror. We can't imagine his revulsion,
- 13:15his pain and anguish, and the depth of his sorrow, offering
- 13:20his own son, his son of miraculous birth, his own child
- 13:25as a sacrifice. And well, we should revolt, and
- 13:29our sensibilities cry out with offense, because just then, just
- 13:36then we may feel a trace of the revulsion and the offense
- 13:42suffered by both father and son who did not shrink from those
- 13:47terrible and triumphant redeeming hours.
- 13:51Feeling for Abraham and Isaac, we may begin to feel for God our
- 13:57Father and his beloved Son, Jesus Christ.
- 14:04If the heavens weep over the wickedness of God's children,
- 14:08imagine. Imagine the tears that flowed
- 14:12when God did not spare his only begotten and innocent Son.
- 14:21Were you there? Did you know?
- 14:26Did you weep? Abraham is a bridge to a son
- 14:32whose will was swallowed up in the will of his father.
- 14:36Abraham is a bridge to the broken heart and the love of a
- 14:40father, not only for his son, but for all of his children.
- 14:48You see, He is not only Christ's Father, He is our Father too.
- 14:57Were it not for the gift of His Son, all other good gifts would
- 15:02be foreclosed and out of reach. The gift of God's Spirit, the
- 15:07gift of knowledge, the gift of life.
- 15:09Because of Christ's resurrection and atonement, He is as He said.
- 15:16The Lord is as He said, the door.
- 15:21He is the door to every other good gift.
- 15:25If you want anything else worth having, you have to go through
- 15:30the door. So let's now talk about the gift
- 15:35of God's Spirit. Heavenly Father's greatest gift
- 15:40is the gift of life in all of its dimensions, its physical
- 15:44life, spiritual life, and especially eternal life.
- 15:49You might think everyone whose heart beats accepts and rejoices
- 15:53in the gift of life, but not so, because there is a big
- 15:57difference between existing and living.
- 16:01Nothing in this life is of greater worth than the supernal
- 16:05gift of the Holy Ghost, the fountain of spiritual life.
- 16:10It is the source of joy, happiness, peace, knowledge,
- 16:14strength, guidance, confidence, love, and every other good
- 16:18thing. It is the power by which we may
- 16:21be changed and made strong, wherein we are weak.
- 16:26It is the Holy Spirit of promise, the power by which
- 16:30marriages and families are bound together eternally.
- 16:34It is the power by which the Lord makes Himself manifest to
- 16:39those who believe in Him. And then quoting the Scripture.
- 16:45Therefore it is given to abide in you the record of heaven, the
- 16:49comforter, the peaceable things of immortal glory, the truth of
- 16:55all things, that which quickeneth all things, which
- 16:59maketh alive all things, that which knoweth all things and
- 17:03hath all power according to wisdom, mercy, truth, justice,
- 17:08and judgment. President Dallin H Oakes taught
- 17:12this, saying by participating weekly and appropriately in the
- 17:17ordinance of the sacrament, we qualify for the promise that we
- 17:22will always have His spirit to be with us.
- 17:26That spirit, he said, is the foundation of our testimony.
- 17:30It testifies of the Father and the Son, brings all things to
- 17:35our remembrance and leads us into truth.
- 17:39It is the compass to guide us on our path.
- 17:43This gift of the Holy Ghost, President Wilfred Woodruff
- 17:47taught, is the greatest gift that can be bestowed upon men.
- 17:53Elder Bruce R Mcconkey said this men ought above all things in
- 18:00this world to seek for the guidance of the Holy Spirit.
- 18:05There is nothing as important as having the companionship of the
- 18:09Holy Ghost. There is no price too high, no
- 18:14labor too onerous, no struggle too severe, no sacrifice too
- 18:19great, if out of it all we receive and enjoy the gift of
- 18:25the Holy Ghost. When asked by Martin Van Buren,
- 18:30then the President of the United States, how Mormonism differed
- 18:34from other religions of the day, the Prophet Joseph Smith is
- 18:39reported to have said we differ in the mode of baptism and the
- 18:44gift of the Holy Ghost by the laying on of hands.
- 18:48All other considerations, he said, are contained in the gift
- 18:53of the Holy Ghost. Jesus said to his disciples, If
- 19:00you love me, keep my commandments, and I will pray
- 19:03the Father, and He shall give you another Comforter, that he
- 19:07may abide with you forever. Even the spirit of truth, whom
- 19:12the world cannot receive, because it seeketh Him not,
- 19:17neither knoweth Him, but ye know Him, for He dwelleth with you
- 19:22and shall be in you. And then continuing, he said,
- 19:28But the Comforter, which is the Holy Ghost, whom the Father will
- 19:32send in my name, he shall teach you all things, and bring all
- 19:38things to your remembrance, whatsoever I have said unto you.
- 19:44On the same occasion the Lord said further, But when the
- 19:48Comforter is come, whom I will send unto you from the Father,
- 19:53even the spirit of truth which proceedeth forth from the
- 19:56Father, he shall testify of me. The gift of the Holy Ghost is
- 20:05never earned. We are never entitled to it.
- 20:10It is always a gift. We can't have it on our own
- 20:16because of our mistakes. When Jesus appeared to his
- 20:20disciples, including Thomas, he said peace be unto you.
- 20:26As my Father has sent me, Even so send I you.
- 20:31And when he had said this, he breathed on them, and saith unto
- 20:35them, Receive ye the Holy Ghost. They were worthy then, but they
- 20:42did not receive it, the gift of the Holy Ghost, until it was
- 20:46given on the day of Pentecost. Our transgressions cut us off
- 20:52from the presence and power of God.
- 20:55But even with the gift of God's Son, the gift of His atonement,
- 20:59even with redemption and worthiness, and even with
- 21:04obedience to God's commandments, the gift of the Holy Ghost is
- 21:08still a gift from Heavenly Father.
- 21:13It is not something we earn. The phrase is so common we gloss
- 21:17over the gift part, but it is always a gift.
- 21:24Every good thing depends on getting and keeping the power of
- 21:28the Holy Ghost in our lives. Everything depends on that.
- 21:35So finally, let's talk about the gift of God's life.
- 21:40While God's Spirit is the greatest gift in this life, in
- 21:44the grand scheme of things, eternal life is the greatest of
- 21:49all the gifts of God. God's work and God's glory is to
- 21:54bring to pass the immortality and eternal life of man.
- 22:00Job asked, If a man dies, shall he live again?
- 22:06The answer is yes, yes, but the next important question is where
- 22:14and in what conditions. Most of what has been revealed
- 22:19about eternal life is about how to get there rather than what to
- 22:23expect when we do. That may seem odd at first
- 22:27blush, but on further reflection we shouldn't be surprised.
- 22:33Quoting from the Scriptures, the glory of the telestial surpasses
- 22:37all understanding, and the glory of the terrestrial excels in all
- 22:44things. The glory of the telestial, even
- 22:47in glory and in power, and in might and in dominion, and the
- 22:52glory of the celestial, excels in all things, where God, even
- 22:58the Father, reigns upon His throne forever and ever.
- 23:04If the glory of the telestial surpasses all understanding, how
- 23:10can we expect to conceive, much less describe, greater things
- 23:15than that? The rich man asked, Good Master,
- 23:21what good things shall I do that I may have eternal life?
- 23:26On another occasion a certain lawyer stood up and tempted him,
- 23:29saying, Master, what shall I do to inherit eternal life?
- 23:35The wonder is given, we don't comprehend eternal life.
- 23:40No one asks what is it? Rather, the question is always,
- 23:46what must I do to get there? While we do not comprehend it,
- 23:52eternal life is a given. Despite its mystery, its reality
- 23:57and anticipation are largely unquestioned, implanted in the
- 24:02hearts of God's children. Eternal life is the quality of
- 24:07life that our eternal Father lives.
- 24:11It is the alternative to spiritual death.
- 24:14It is life eternally. Whosoever believeth in him, the
- 24:21Scriptures say meaning Christ should not perish but have
- 24:26eternal life. It is more than immortality,
- 24:31more than perpetual existence, Jacob said.
- 24:35Remember, to be carnally minded is death.
- 24:38To be spiritually minded is life eternal.
- 24:44The Spirit of God is life, and God's presence on earth.
- 24:48Eternal life is the fullness of that life forever.
- 24:55We also know that the same sociality which exists among us
- 24:59here will exist among us there only It will be coupled with
- 25:04eternal glory, which glory we do not now enjoy.
- 25:09Jesus prayed, saying, And this is life eternal, that they might
- 25:15know thee, the only true God in Jesus Christ, whom thou has
- 25:18sent. A fullness of joy is everlasting
- 25:23life in the Society of God. It is to know them as we know
- 25:30one another. It is to be fit for their
- 25:33presence, to be like them and see them as they are.
- 25:40An integral part of eternal life is the continuation of the
- 25:44family life and the power of procreation throughout eternity.
- 25:51Family is not a mortal convention.
- 25:55It is not a lower law, rather it is the pattern of heaven.
- 26:02Jesus said be therefore perfect even as your Father in heaven is
- 26:06perfect. The standard there, the model,
- 26:11is not only perfection but also parenthood.
- 26:15Be like your Father. And So what is He?
- 26:18What is he like? He is first and foremost
- 26:23apparent, a very good parent to perfect Father and Eternal
- 26:28Father. If we learn enough about being a
- 26:31good spouse and parent while here, we will be permitted to
- 26:35live as husband and wife, wife, father and mother throughout
- 26:40eternity as Eternal Fathers and mothers.
- 26:44Family is the pattern of heaven. Elder Joseph B Worthland taught
- 26:51this, saying what is the work and glory of God to bring to
- 26:56pass the immortality and eternal life of man?
- 27:02I will explain the difference he said, between these two ends,
- 27:06immortality and eternal life. Bringing to pass immortality is
- 27:12essentially a work of creation. God speaks and worlds are formed
- 27:19at the culmination of this work. Man is placed upon the earth to
- 27:23learn, be tested, and gain experience.
- 27:27Because of the sacrifice of the Son of God, the hour will come.
- 27:32All that are in the grave shall hear his voice, and shall come
- 27:36forth. They that have done good unto
- 27:39the resurrection of life, and they that have done evil unto
- 27:42the resurrection of damnation, the just as well as the unjust,
- 27:49are given a priceless and incomprehensible gift,
- 27:53immortality. Because of Jesus Christ, we will
- 27:57live forever. We are immortal.
- 28:01Eternal life, he said, however, is something altogether
- 28:05different. Immortality is about quantity.
- 28:09Eternal life is about quality. To use a metaphor immor.
- 28:14Immortality is how long the dinner lasts.
- 28:19Eternal life is what is on the menu and who is with us at the
- 28:24table. If immortality is God's word,
- 28:28then eternal life is God's glory.
- 28:33A long quote, but so very well said.
- 28:37Immortality and eternal life are inextricably linked together,
- 28:42quantity coupled with quality, not one without the other.
- 28:48President Ezra Taft Benson said this.
- 28:52Yes, life is eternal. We live on and on After Earth
- 28:57life, even though we oftentimes lose sight of that great basic
- 29:01truth. It is, he said, a great truth.
- 29:06And what are three score and 10 years on earth to all eternity
- 29:11with God. Eternal life is to return to our
- 29:16Father in the fullness of His glory and live as He lives
- 29:20forever. It is to return home for good.
- 29:25God's greatest gifts offered to all His children everywhere from
- 29:32the beginning of time, are the gifts of His Son, His Spirit,
- 29:37and His life. They constitute the best of all
- 29:41human conditions. Without God and His supernal
- 29:46gifts, only the natural state remains chaos, darkness, and
- 29:53death. They constitute the worst of all
- 29:58human conditions. We will explore those conditions
- 30:02in greater depth in the next few episodes.
- 30:07Again, the essential problem in life is separation from God our
- 30:12Father and His great gifts.
